Visual Schedules for Preschool (free printable)

Schedules are an important way of life. They keep us in our daily routines and get us to the places we need to be. In a preschool classroom, a daily schedule is the backbone to our day.   At the beginning of the school year, I create our classroom schedule (using the 5 step method) and have it hanging up in the room. But, of course the young children in our classroom can’t read it! I found that many of my students were asking ‘what do we do next?’, ‘when can we go outside?’ and ‘when is my mom coming?’.  So, I knew it was time to create some visual supports for my little non-readers!  

Creating a Picture Schedule for Little Learners

Visual schedules are a powerful tool for our classrooms and they also quite easy to put together. All you need is a long, skinny pocket chart and picture cards depicting what the daily activities are on your own schedule. I like to use individual picture cards so that I (or a students) can turn them around backwards once the activity is done. This makes it super easy for students to see which is the next activity in our school day.  

The Benefits of Displaying Visual Schedule Cards

I’ve found that many teachers don’t take the time to create visual schedules for their preschoolers. But, I truly believe that using picture schedules is one super powerful tool that belongs in your classroom management tool box. The benefits out-weigh the small amount of time it takes to put the visual schedule together!

1. Students that have a hard time being away from home can take comfort knowing what comes next. We take a card out after finishing each event. Sometimes I will have my students that struggle with separation to help me with this. You would be very surprised how comforting it is for a nervous student to have the knowledge of the events of the day.

2. Helps children who do not like transitioning. I give a warning for when center time is ending. Letting students know that the bell is going to be ringing and we will be cleaning up to have circle time. The next activity is on the visual schedule. I can point to the schedule to explain why we are moving on to another activity. It gives them clear expectations of how the day will run.

3. Children learn the class routine more quickly when displayed in a way that they can understand it (with pictures) – which is best for many of our visual learners!

4. When the regular routine changes, a visual schedule is great to reference. As children might feel out of sync when the routine is different, a visual schedule helps them know what is next.

5. Visual Schedules are a great way to help children learn the sequence of events in the classroom, especially when using the words ‘first’, ‘next’ and ‘last’.

6. Predictability helps children feel safe. We all like to know what the plan is throughout the day and children are no different! Visual schedules can help you prevent negative behavior due to feeling out of control.

7. Save yourself from repeating verbal instructions and answers over and over again. The faster your class learns the schedule, the less you will have to prompt them to the next activity. Plus, you’ll save your voice and sanity by not having to answer the ‘what do we do next?’ question over and over!  

Using Visual Classroom Schedules 

It is important to keep in mind that with all the benefits of visual schedules being great – you must use it! If you create a visual schedule for your preschoolers, but don’t teach them how to use it – that schedule will just become noise on the wall.

Make going over the schedule part of your morning routine. This might be done at circle time or morning meeting. But, just quickly run through the schedule so children can start to associate the picture with an event. Also, take some tiny amounts of time to announce aloud the activities that have been done and flip the cards over, if you haven’t already. For example, while my children are eating snack, I will say aloud – “Let’s check the schedule”. Then, I go over to the pocket chart and flip over any activities that we have already done. I talk aloud as I do this – giving the children a clear picture of how to use the schedule.

One idea might be to have a classroom job or helper that is in charge of flipping the cards on the schedule. This makes flipping the schedule a job that is sure to be done – because children don’t let you forget to let them do their job!

The last idea for using a visual schedule comes for those that might have more individual needs. If you are finding that a student is struggling with transitions an individual schedule might be just the ticket. Print visual schedule cards at 25% and create a small board for that child. This works great for children with special needs or who may need to have the schedule flipping job everyday.

6 Tips on How to Schedule Your Day for Preschool

Having a schedule and setting routines for young children is essential in helping their development. But routine does a lot more than structure a child’s day. In fact, it helps reduce their anxiety and stress when they’re able to know what’s going to happen throughout the day, and also helps you and your staff plan ahead.

Whether your facility still relies on the traditional bulletin board or preschool management software, we’ve put together a few actionable tips that will help you structure your days.

1. Start With a Plan

Before you start anything, make sure you have a plan in place. This includes gathering any resources you may need for crafts, lessons, playtime, and more. You will also need to consider what staff you will need, the number of children registered, what meals you plan to serve, any allergies, special needs, or requests.

Checking all of these details across various files and papers isn’t easy. And when it comes to important planning and safety tasks, missing a small detail could be dangerous. You can easily put this plan together using preschool management software. 2. Keep Transitions in Mind

When you first start making your schedule, it might look something like this:

• 8:00-8:30 Quiet Play Time

• 9:30-10:00 Outside Time

However, there’s no transition time planned. You haven’t allotted the time that it takes for the kids to get their outdoor clothes on, or to clean up after craft time. When you don’t schedule time for your transitions, you end up losing time that you made for other activities. 

For instance, if it takes the kids 5 minutes to get ready to go outside, then they only have 25 minutes of outdoor time, not 30 minutes. As the day goes on, these minor changes will cause you to fall behind schedule or run out on time needed for certain activities. It can be challenging to visualize what an entire day looks like. That’s why preschool management software is so important today. You can easily plan and schedule your day for preschool, while also taking into consideration transition times. This will make it easier for you to keep track of your day and keep your kids happy.

3. Consider Audio and Visual Cues for Transitions

When doing transitions, instead of just telling your children, “It’s time to put out jackets on,” try using audio and visual cues. For example, when storytime is wrapping up and it’s time for them to wash their hands for snack time, you can put up a handwashing picture on the board. 

Or, if it’s naptime, you can dim the lights 5 minutes before and turn on white noise, which will signal that it’s time to settle down. This helps add routine to their day, giving them the consistency needed to remember how to behave when exposed to certain cues.

The Children of Mary Charitable Foundation has been working in Moscow since 1997 with children and adults living in boarding schools, families with children and adults with special needs, with boarding school graduates, helping in their socialization and rehabilitation through creative activities in a family atmosphere goodwill and unconditional acceptance, human warmth and support. For more than 200 wards, regular classes are held in painting, ceramics, various types of arts and crafts (felting, decoupage, stained glass, patchwork, ebru, embroidery, tapestry, mosaic, etc. ), music, cooking, theater and others types of creative, cognitive and developmental activities. Children receive, among other things, the necessary everyday and social skills that they do not have the opportunity to develop in boarding schools. Part of the classes takes place in the Foundation’s studio, and part – in the boarding schools themselves. Classes are conducted by professional teachers-artists, they are assisted by trained volunteers. The involvement of volunteers contributes to the expansion of social ties between children and adults from boarding schools, and improves communication skills. Classes for children with disabilities from families (both physical and mental) are held in a family format, both parents and siblings of special children participate in them. Thus, children with special needs are not isolated, and healthy children have the opportunity in the process of joint activities to get to know special children, learn to interact with them, and help if necessary. Artistic works of the studio members participate in exhibitions in Russia and abroad, bringing public recognition to young artists, drawing people’s attention to the work of the center and helping special children and adults. nine0003

Before the pandemic and after the easing of security measures, the studio in Dmitrovsky Lane welcomed children and graduates of boarding schools seven days a week. With institutions that were not ready to let the guys go to the studio, we conducted online classes. Painting, ceramics, modeling from plasticine, felting, weaving, music, culinary master classes and much more are our teachers and volunteers. A total of 255 children and adults from children’s and adult boarding schools and from families, as well as boarding school graduates, participated in our classes. 2000 classes were held. nine0063

A real estate developer is a person or company that oversees all of the people involved in the building or renovating homes, offices, retail centers or industrial sites. These projects may convert vacant land or empty, neglected buildings into new businesses and homes.

Specifically, real estate developers need to see the potential in a piece of land or property, then organize the resources to turn it into reality. They develop a plan that includes finding investors to buy the property, decide what to build or rebuild on that property and find the contractors to complete the project. From start to finish, a job could take years to complete, with all of the stages of the real estate development process. Real estate developers have expertise in the following areas:

What are the requirements for becoming a real estate developer?

You can start a real estate career right away, but it typically takes a few years and extensive work experience to develop a broad knowledge of all the aspects of real estate a developer handles.

“Many real estate developers have gone to school for an undergraduate or master’s degree in real estate finance, or even an MBA,” says David Wilson, past president of the CCIM Institute.

Certifications and continuing education from real estate organizations like the CCIM Institute, NAIOP or the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors also provide a deep dive.

“I strongly believe the education provided by the CCIM Institute is one of the best places to learn about cap rate, internal rate of return, depreciation, etc.,” Wilson says.

Below is a traditional path many real estate developers take.

Education, Expertise and Experience Needed to Become a Real Estate Developer

The experience and education needed to become a real estate developer varies depending on the individual. However, below are some common steps that many real estate developers take.

Step 1: Get the necessary education

Many universities offer undergraduate, master’s and MBA real estate programs within their business schools, building a strong educational foundation for a real estate development career. Future developers can learn about real estate law, finance, environmental remediation, public policy, urban planning, architecture and other areas of development.

Students may also get project-based experience to add to their portfolios, and internships that lead to building a network of contacts within the industry. “If there is an opportunity to jump into an internship program with a development first, that is always a great route,” Wilson says.

Step 2: Gain experience in real estate

There are typically two paths you may take to get your feet wet in real estate development after graduation.

1. Work for a real estate development company

Top real estate program graduates may get hired as junior development associates at a real estate development firm. Some tasks you might take on with entry-level real estate development jobs include:

• Client communication over the course of a project
• Developing budgets
• Lining up vendors and contractors
• Ensuring projects stay on schedule
• Talking to neighbors near a project
• Working on financial models
• Conducting market research
• Assisting more senior members of the firm

Finding someone to show you the ropes during these types of jobs can be invaluable to growing your real estate development career. “I also highly encourage people to find a mentor in the industry that helps guide them and direct them when it comes to the dos and don’ts,” says Wilson.

2. Work in related real estate fields

Some people choose to become real estate brokers to learn how to put deals together. Others work in building construction, finance, architecture or commercial lending to make contacts and gain experience. Regardless of which real estate field you choose, according to Wilson, a large company can give you access to a bigger pool of experience: “I am a firm believer that if you’re just starting out, there is no better place than a bigger firm where you can learn from multiple people.”

Step 3: Consider additional certification and courses

Many current and aspiring real estate developers pursue additional specialized education to advance their careers. Trade organizations offer numerous real estate development certificates and courses.

Certifications. The CCIM Institute offers the certified commercial investment member (CCIM) designation, as well as a comprehensive Development Specialty Track. NAIOP, the Commercial Real Estate Development Association, offers advanced certificates for commercial real estate development and real estate finance.

Courses. CCIM’s course offerings include a two-and-a-half-day crash course introduction to real estate development, a development workshop, a comprehensive Development Specialty Track program and a formal designation in commercial real estate that can take years to complete. Earning the CCIM pin requires courses in financial modeling, investments, market analysis and ethics, as well as a rigorous comprehensive exam.

The NAIOP offers online and in-person classes, including certificate programs in commercial real estate development and real estate finance.

You’ll need to set realistic expectations for yourself when you first start out in real estate development. “I think there is a mentality that you can graduate from college, become a real estate developer and make $100,000 plus your first year,” Wilson says, adding, “it’s not going to happen.”

You also need to have a strong work ethic if you want to succeed. “Real estate development is not an 8 to 5 job,” Wilson says. “If someone is getting into the business and thinks they can just dabble in it, I would disagree wholeheartedly.”

Here are some tips worth knowing as a new real estate developer:

Build relationships.Relationship building may be the most important factor to success as a real estate developer. “I think the main thing is being able to be a good networker and build strong relationships,” Wilson says. “You do business with people you know, like and trust, and once people know they can trust you and that you’ll deliver for them, they will want to do more business with you,” says Wilson.

Find capital.If you don’t have a substantial amount of cash at first, you’ll need to find partners who will front the money. “Learn the business and co-invest with someone you trust and respect, if you can,” Wilson says. You may also want to start learning what commercial real estate loans are available, and what the qualifying terms are.

Constantly grow your knowledge.Real estate developers study the market to see what it needs, and the design projects to meet those needs. “Learn each and every day about the business,” Wilson says. “Soak in as much knowledge as you can, and remember, no two deals are the same,” Wilson added.

Buy land.Now that you have access to cash, you need to acquire property to build on. You may purchase vacant land or older buildings to rehab or demolish.

Develop a plan and get it approved.Real estate developers study the market to see what it needs, then design a building project to meet that demand. You’ll likely need sign off from the local government before breaking ground.

Build.Once you get approval, you can construct the new building or rehabilitate the older one on your property.

Sell the project.Once the project is complete, selling it becomes the main priority. How to become a real estate investor with no money

While developers typically invest some of their own money, the bulk of the financing comes from commercial loans, and the majority of the equity in the project comes from investors. These investors could be real estate investment trusts (REITs), pension funds, private equity firms, family offices and other private investors.

You may be limited to private lenders and “angel” investors at first, including successful older friends and family members looking to diversify their retirement income. Private investors may also find the social value of a project appealing, such as affordable housing development.

Real estate development can be a high-paying field, but salaries vary depending on your experience and job type. What does a builder do?

The developer is responsible for managing tasks in the process of real estate development and its sale to clients. In this role, a person may purchase land, help finance a real estate transaction, work with a builder to design and build a building on the property, and determine how to sell the building or land to clients.

Developers take on some of the biggest risks in this process because they are the ones who decide to invest in real estate and turn it into something else, such as a commercial building or apartment complex.

Some developers specialize in certain stages of the building process. For example, a developer may focus on finding and investing in land, or coordinating with building contractors on the lots.

Others prefer to focus on the entire process from start to finish, working with municipalities to obtain permits, coordinating marketing efforts and overseeing the construction process. Developers often work with a variety of partners in this process, including engineers, architects, contractors, urban planners, surveyors, leasing agents, surveyors, and lawyers.
