What Schedule is Best for a Kindergartener?

What Subjects Are Taught in Kindergarten?
Although this may vary depending on what your state’s homeschooling requirements are, the subjects that are typically taught when homeschooling kindergarten are:

Homeschooling kindergarten should be a fun and enjoyable time for both you and your child. Below are some tips and ideas to help make it a memorable, and successful year.
Schedule plenty of playtime – Playing is such an important part of childhood and learning, in fact, learning through play is very beneficial to young children since it allows them to be creative and explore the world around them.
Read together – In addition to being a wonderful opportunity to snuggle and spend quality time together, reading to your child will help build their literacy, comprehension and communication skills.
Go on field trips – From children’s museums to science centers to local parks, there is a world of learning not too far from wherever it is you call home. Be sure to pencil in time to go on educational field trips on a regular basis. The change of scenery will be welcome by all and provide plenty of opportunity to learn new things from a different perspective.
Take advantage of your child’s curiosity – At this age, students are full of questions. Embrace that thirst for knowledge to learn about anything and everything your child is curious about.
Keep an open mind – As a homeschooler, you have tons of flexibility, so don’t feel like you have to do things by the book. Be open to change and new opportunities that present themselves to learn. Remember, learning can happen anywhere and anytime.
Be flexible – Don’t feel like you have to be confined to your house or follow a strict schedule. Some days may be challenging, and that’s ok. Go with the flow, and if you need to take the day off and head outside, so be it.

Parents often find that homeschooling kindergarten is a delicate balancing act. You’re excited (and maybe a little nervous) to start teaching your child. You want to make sure that you’re covering all the necessary subjects well. What subjects do you actually need to teach in kindergarten? What curriculum should you use to teach these kindergarten subjects?

Balancing Play & Academics in Kindergarten
There are many thoughts out there on what is appropriate and necessary subjects to teach 5 and 6 year olds.
Some families don’t do any formal learning yet. They just play.
We chose to take an eclectic and academic approach starting in kindergarten. We use both play based learning and academic work. It has worked out really well and feels like just the right balance for us.
This marrying of the two philosophies will create a well rounded and developmentally appropriate homeschool for your family. Remember to integrate learning into play and life. We don’t want to recreate school at home instead we want to create an academically rich environment where kids are free to learn with parental guidance.

Let’s dive in to find out what subjects are important to teach in Kindergarten. I’ll also include recommendations for the curriculum that we use.

Here are the kindergarten subjects and the kindergarten curriculum we use to make the kindergarten year work well for our family!
Kindergarten Language Arts Curriculum
For kindergarten, language arts encompasses phonics instruction, reading, spelling, and handwriting. The curriculum I used to teach my kids these things is called Logic of English Foundations. We use Foundations A and Foundations B levels in Kindergarten.
I love that Logic of English is all-inclusive with phonemic awareness, phonics, reading, spelling, and handwriting. And levels C and D also include grammar!
Most kindergarteners will be ready for a full language arts curriculum, but some won’t be and that’s ok. If you get started and it’s too frustrating or it just doesn’t seem to be clicking, step away and come back in a couple months.

It is important to recognize that most kids will not magically learn to read by themselves or simply be being exposed to books. Kids need formal phonics instruction to become good readers.
I also recommend using leveled readers once you finish Foundations A to keep kids motivated and build up reading fluency. These leveled readers are great to do alongside Foundations B.
I’ve used Logic of English Foundations with two of my kids so far, and we love this curriculum. It is the one curriculum that I think is the most important to get and focus on in Kindergarten.

It’s also important to read quality picture books to your kids and let them improve their fine motor skills by playing with play dough or kinetic sand to build hand muscles. Fine motor skills are an important part of developing good handwriting.

Kindergarten Math Curriculum
In kindergarten, math instruction is often recognizing patterns, building number sense, and counting, plus some simple addition and subtraction. These early math skills provide your kid with the foundation for all the math they’ll do in the future. It’s important to teach them well while also keeping it fun. My favorite kindergarten math curriculum is Kindergarten Math with Confidence by Kate Snow. It’s a solid, affordable math curriculum that is scripted and easy for the parent to teach. Plus it includes hands-on games and activities that your child will love.
A great supplement for kindergarten math curriculum is the K Level of Wild Math! This gives you ideas for hands-on ways to practice math concepts outside.
Playing games is one of the best ways to practice kindergarten math skills in a fun way. So in addition to a good math curriculum, we have plenty of math games that we play regularly.

Kindergarten Science Curriculum
You can approach science in a more simple way with unit studies or a full curriculum. We use a robust secular science curriculum for kindergarten: REAL Science Odyssey Life.
I did a lot of research when choosing our science curriculum. We really wanted to ensure that it would give our kids a firm foundation in understanding scientific principles, have a hands-on component and be enjoyable. REAL Science Odyssey ticked all of those boxes for me. This is a great science curriculum for Kindergarten because it incorporates so many things that kids are naturally interested in at this age.
Plus this is a scripted, open-and-go kindergarten science curriculum that makes it easy for the parent to teach!

Kindergarten Social Studies, Geography, or History Curriculum
Kindergarten social studies often covers topics such as: culture, diversity, local community, basic economic concepts, geography, governance, civics, and basic history. This can seem like a lot to cover, and honestly you don’t need to cover everything. Obviously, check homeschool laws in your state or country, but usually, you don’t need to do a lot for these subjects in kindergarten.
We decided to cover geography and world literature using Exploring the World Through Story A. This is a great curriculum for kindergarten. It’s a gentle introduction to the world and includes age-appropriate stories, memory work, and oral narration activities.

Kindergarten Character Building Curriculum
Character building and emotional intelligence are both very important during these formative years. During Kindergarten you can talk specifically about character traits, do thought experiments and help your child become mindful.
The best way to do this is through reading books and talking about them. Mali and Keela is an excellent book that specifically focuses on this. We also use Building Character with True Stories from Nature.

Kindergarten Art Curriculum
Most kids love doing arts and crafts, and they are an important part of childhood! You don’t need a structured curriculum for this. Let kids experiment, find fun projects on Pinterest, and incorporate the seasons into your projects.
We use the Drawing with Children curriculum and I really like the approach. I think it’s great if you want something with more guidance on how to draw realistically.

Kindergarten Music Curriculum
I know my kids LOVE music and I suspect that most kids do. You can definitely just listen to music and sing songs with your kids. You don’t need a curriculum to follow at this age. Get a set of hand instruments and just have fun!
If you’re interested in some guidance or one of your kids wants to learn an instrument then there are some great options available!
We really enjoy using Prodigies Music. It’s so much fun and kids really learn music! I highly recommend checking it out. Kids learn songs, rhythm, and simple instruments like desk bells or boomwhackers. They also have a recorder course and ukulele course included in the membership.
If you have a child interested in learning to play piano, I highly recommend Hoffman Academy. One of our kids started using it to learn piano in Kindergarten and it has been wonderful! They have a free option and paid option.
Kindergarten Practical Life Skills
Teaching life skills is such an important part of kindergarten! This is the perfect time to introduce more household responsibilities and teaching your child skills that will foster independence.

There are likely many more things you could add to that list, but that gives you a good idea of some of the things you should be having your kindergartener do with you. Teach as they work alongside you.
Kindergarten PE
Kids need to move and get exercise every day! PE should be fun. Take your kids outside to play, go to the park, go swimming, take a hike.
My kids like to do Cosmic Kids Yoga on YouTube in the mornings. You can also check out your local YMCA for homeschool PE classes that meet once a week!
If your kids play sports, dance or do karate, those all count as PE as well!
PE tends to happen naturally for most families, but I did think it was important to include here anyway.

Infant Programs (6 weeks–1 year)

Do you support alternative diets?
We strive to be as inclusive as possible. To that point, we provide a vegetarian option at mealtime, take care to not serve common allergens and can adapt menus based on your child’s food sensitivities. If your child has additional needs, we’ll work with you to figure out a plan.
Are meals included in tuition? Can I choose to send my child with lunch?
We provide nutritious meals and snacks developed by a registered dietician to meet the needs of rapidly growing bodies and minds. If your child has special dietary requirements and you would prefer to bring in their lunch, please make arrangements with the center director.
Does my child need to be potty-trained?
Every child begins toilet learning at a different age. Until your child shows an interest in toilet learning, we’ll provide diaper changes on an as-needed basis. When your child shows an interest, we’ll discuss how to work together to encourage toilet learning.

KINDER CARE NURSERY is a well established private day nursery, staffed by a committed, child focused and a highly skilled diverse team. It was set up in March 2007 by the owners who have a wealth of experience in childcare. The nursery is based on the corner of Richmond Rd and Francis Rd in Stechford with excellent public transport links. The location is in the close proximity of the Heartlands Hospital and Stechford Retail Park and in the walking distance from Stechford and Chorpus Christi Schools. The nursery is set over two floors with a large outdoor play area.
Choosing the right day nursery is one of life’s important decisions. We work closely with our parents to ensure that their children have the best start possible. Our aim is to provide a safe, happy and stimulating environment for young children, keeping all of their development needs in mind.
The children in our care are provided with a wide range of carefully planned play- learning activities which in turn cater for each individual child’s needs. Staff observe and assess all children in their care and complete detailed development records which are shared with parents on a regular basis. We offer a free settling in period after booking your nursery place, where parents and babies spend time together at nursery familiarising themselves with staff and surroundings and discussing their child’s individual needs, feeding plans and care plan with your key worker. The settling in period is a two way process both for the nursery and the parent’s to find out more. This will ensure the child get’s the best possible start at Kinder Care Nursery.
Our menu
We offer a pesco vegetarian diet which includes fish. Meals are prepared on site, providing a varied and nutritious menu. Breakfast is a choice of cereal or toast. Then there are hot lunches and afternoon tea, which together with our healthy snacks helps to provide all children in our care with a balanced diet, with special diets catered for as required. We work within the Safer Food, Better Business Initiative and are subject to checks from Environmental Health. We have a food hygiene rating of 5.
Our menus have been nutritionally analysed using the ‘Eat Well Plate’ to ensure we provide a balanced and varied diet.

A little bit from the history of kindergarten development
Kindergarten was founded on September 10, 1957.
2 groups were organized: nursery and preschool.
In the 1980s, a new generation of young and energetic workers came to the chemical and metallurgical plant. In the residential area of the plant, houses were built for specialists, and there was a catastrophic lack of places in the kindergarten.
November 1988 came and after the repair of the nursery-garden received 200 preschool children.
The following facilities were built in the institution: a music hall, a swimming pool, galleries, a methodical office, a medical unit, a catering unit.
At first, all efforts were directed towards organizing an institution, equipping a kindergarten, and creating the conditions necessary for educational work with children.
Early 2000s. Renewal of preschool education.
New teachers came to the kindergarten. The conditions for creative search have been created in the preschool institution, and the psychological climate in the team has been established. The teaching staff believes that the education and upbringing of children should be carried out with the activity of the child himself. In activity, the child builds his image of the world, masters the methods that allow him to successfully solve the problems that life sets before him.
At present, our preschool institution has: a music hall, a winter garden, a creative gallery, a swimming pool, a gym, a sports ground, a methodological room, a psychological unloading room, and a medical unit.
Since its inception, the kindergarten has changed its status several times.
In 1998, the kindergarten was transferred to the Department of Education of the Administration of Krasnoyarsk and became known as preschool educational institution No. 18.
In February 1998, Kindergarten No. 18 was reorganized into Preschool Educational Institution Kindergarten No. 18.
In July 1998, the preschool educational institution was reorganized into the Municipal Preschool Educational Institution Kindergarten No. 18.
2009 – Preschool educational institution No. 18 was reorganized into a preschool educational institution “Kindergarten No. 18 of a general developmental type with a priority implementation of activities in the physical direction of the development of preschoolers.”

In practice, children can stay in the hospital for much longer. In many regions, abandoned children are placed in infectious boxes, where they become infected from other children with infectious diseases. The goals of such a service are defined as “providing a comfortable, safe environment for children; improvement of social and living conditions for the stay of children in a medical organization; constant presence near children; helping children.” The fulfillment of these goals, according to the authors of the project, will lead to an increase in the quality of life of children, a decrease in the level of disability, an increase in the effectiveness of treatment and a faster recovery of children, as well as their psychological comfort. To finance the service, the authors of the project propose to use the funds included in the budget of orphanages for medical care; special regional programs guaranteeing the provision of free medical care; voluntary property contributions and donations of legal entities and individuals; government subsidies to non-profit organizations. Also, the draft specifies the maximum workload for a caregiver (no more than six children per specialist) and the conditions for allowing such specialists to work (medical examinations, psychiatric examination, no criminal record).

According to the monitoring data of the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation, in 2015–2017, medical care in a stationary form was provided to 41,899 children from among orphans and children left without parental care. In the Novosibirsk Region alone, more than 1,000 children receive hospital care services annually (1,077 in 2019). In fact, there are more children who need treatment in a hospital, but not all of them can get such help.
“In the amendments to the Constitution, adopted on July 1, it is said that the state assumes the parental function in relation to children left without parents,” Marina Aksenova summarizes.

contains a pin pad where parents enter a door code in order to get
into our school. We also have an on-site Health and Safety
Coordinator who is fully trained to all current KinderCare Health
and Safety guidelines, which meet and exceed all Community Care
(Licensing) guidelines and who’s goal is to help prevent illness
and injury for the children and staff. Our coordinator attends
Health and Safety Trainings and coordinates on-site trainings for
our staff. Our staff are all certified in Pediatric First Aid,
Pediatric CPR, and Preventive Health Practices.

The facility was cited for violating standard 746.1203(4) – Responsibilities of Caregivers – Supervision of Children for losing track of a child during outdoor playtime.
Date of incident: June 14, 2018
Summary of the Report: Texas Child Care and Licensing division of the Texas Health and Human Services Department investigates an incident involving a young child being left alone in a classroom for an undetermined amount of time.
The caregiver in charge of the child reports that she was distracted by a child that had fallen when a different child turned around and ran back inside to the building and inside a classroom. The caregiver reports that she did not notice the child had gone back inside until she lined the class up later to go inside. The child was left alone inside the classroom for an undetermined amount of time while his/her teacher was outside and unaware that he/she was missing.
Upon discovering what happened, the assistant director reports that she notified the daycare’s risk team, directors, and the state licensing division. The director of the center reports that she notified the parent, informed her of the incident, and provided her with an incident report. The operation then placed the responsible caregiver on administrative leave during the investigation.
The investigation report notes that the stories given by the distracted caregiver and the assistant director were conflicting. Based on the two versions of the events in the report, we do not know what actually led to the child being left alone and we do not know how long the child was left alone.
The investigation report does not speak to whether the daycare required any additional training for its caregivers following this incident.
Fortunately, the child was found without physical injury or incident.

Daycares are supposed to have systems in place to prevent them from losing track of the children in their care. The caregivers are required to double check and make sure all children are properly accounted for. If childcare providers skip these steps, the consequences could be dangerous or even fatal for the children who are forgotten.
Losing Track of Children is All Too Common in Daycares
Unfortunately, daycares losing track of children happens all too often. The root cause is often a failure to supervise, a high ratio of children per caregiver, or a lack of training on how to do an effective name-to-face check to keep track of all children.
We always recommend that parents ask about the daycare’s policy on performing the name-to-face identification checks and make sure that they meet their expectations. Ask the daycare how they go about making sure that every child is always accounted for at all times because when daycares lose track of the children in their care, children can get hurt.
Our team has made combatting daycare negligence a focus of our practice. We have heard the heartbreaking stories of parents whose child has been lost and left alone by the daycare. We have handled more than one case where a child was left outside for hours in 40 degree and rainy weather, completely unknown to the caregivers in charge of their safety. Toddler Program
Our two toddler classes are divided into older and younger toddlers, allowing them to foster friendships, curiosity, and self-esteem. With very low student-teacher ratios, children are able to bond easier and have personal instruction in this crucial developmental stage. Each day is loaded with activities that engage and excite toddlers, laying the groundwork for first words as well as first friends.
2-Year-Old Program
New discoveries are part of the everyday world for two year-olds. Our program is designed to expand and encourage this natural desire for exploration and curiosity by preparing their eager minds for a lifetime of learning, sharing, and experience. With each class day in our two-year-old program, children are engaged in fun and exciting activities that teach early educational functions and skills that they will need as they continue their journey to preschool and beyond.
3-Year-Old Program
By three years-old, children feel like they are ready to take on the world. As educators, we know the importance of enhancing and building upon that confidence to ensure that our students strive to achieve at levels that will amaze even themselves. Our three-year-old program inspires our students to become lifelong learners and exceptional Christ-followers through rigorous hands-on learning, engaging activities, and God-centered activities that make learning literacy, math, history and science an exciting experience each child looks forward to.
Before & After School Program
Even when school lets out for the day, children need to be involved in a comfortable, yet motivating atmosphere. That’s where our programs for school-age children come in. Our before- and after-school programs provide school-age children from Temple Christian Schools everything from homework help to fun physical activities, as well as an afternoon snack. I am not a fan of romance movies. From childhood, I was fascinated by the idea/ posibility/ opportunity of time travel. But this splenid film is more about time travels and love. It is a gorgeous film about family. And it has the best actors ever. It is a film so useful than its seeds grows up , for long time, in the viewer memories and new attitude about life and the others. And that makes it just a great film. For humor, tension, honesty, for the relation father – son, touching in profound senses, for the lovely relation brother – sister, for admirable portrait of small aspects of the every day existence, for dialogues and, sure, for something nameless because you only feel. Short, great at whole.

For everything that a person does, he needs days, hours, minutes. Everything is determined by time – how much to work, how much to relax, when to meet friends, and when to do household chores.
Time plays the most important role in a person’s life. Over time, it grows, wiser and matures. Sometimes there are times when you want the time to fly by quickly and imperceptibly. Senior: I’m a “lifer” at Shorecrest, having been here since Alpha. My experience with the school is perhaps different from students now since there have been many changes both faculty/administration-wise as well as with the newest buildings on campus.
Shorecrest introduced me to reading at a very young age. I’m very grateful for that. The quality of education that I have and am receiving is top notch. Middle school prepared me very well for upper school, and now, as a graduating senior, I feel quite confident in my academic abilities. Teachers are just fantastic.
The theater and athletics programs are excellent. As a small school, students have the opportunity to be deeply involved in a number of programs, ranging from service clubs to sports to the annual Spring Musical. Being able to do a range of things is important as it allows students to forge their own path by testing different areas out and seeing how they like them.

Kings Colleges Bournemouth – English, beach, Stonehenge (England)
At the Kings school, a child of 13-17 years old will improve their English, relax on the best British beaches, visit Oxford, Bath, London and Brighton. The school is well located in the heart of the resort town of Bournemouth, within walking distance of the beach. Schoolchildren live in residences or host families nearby.
English lessons are 15 hours per week. Classes are held in an easy game form. Students watch videos, work on group projects, read British magazines and, of course, communicate a lot in English. Palm oil: a necessary evil
Global demand for Asian palm oil is hurting wildlife. Meanwhile, on another continent – in African Gabon – they are trying to bring the industry to a new level and save forests from deforestation.
Virgin forests in the southwest of Gabon stretch for hundreds of kilometers. On a January morning, I go to the banks of the Ngunye River with a few employees of the agricultural company Olam. We got here by boat and go further into the forest – along the elephant trail. Along the way, we come across centuries-old trees, chimpanzee nests and heaps of gorilla droppings. Somewhere above, monkeys are jumping along the branches. A young Olam ranger kicks off his boots, climbs a tree trunk barefoot, and climbs back down with a handful of pink, plum-like fruits.
We make our way further and find wild mangoes, kola nuts and garlic-smelling bark. Sunlight breaks through the foliage: fish can be seen splashing in a small pond. There are many scratches and scratches on the trees around, left by elephant tusks.
From one thought that this forest can be cut down, the heart shrinks.
These lands are not part of a park or reserve, but are located on the Muila oil palm plantation managed by Olam. Somewhere in Malaysia or Indonesia, two of the world’s largest palm oil producing countries, lumberjacks and bulldozers would probably have been flooding the jungle long ago to clear it into even rows of oil palms.
These palm trees with huge clusters of red fruits, covered with lushly growing spreading leaves, have been planted for centuries. For thousands of years, their fruits have been boiled and crushed, thus extracting oil. The shells were sent to the fire for heating, and the leaves were used almost everywhere – from baskets to the roofs of dwellings. In the past few decades, palm oil consumption has experienced an explosive growth, due to its versatility and high density, as well as the fertility of the trees. Compared to other crops such as soybeans, palm trees require half the land to produce the same amount of oil.
Palm has become the most popular vegetable oil, accounting for a third of the world’s consumption. In India and other countries, it is used in cooking. And yet – it is included in almost all products available in any supermarket: cookies, pizza dough, bread, lipstick, lotion, soap. It is also found in biodiesel, which is considered environmentally friendly: in 2017, 51 percent of the palm oil consumed by the European Union was used to fuel cars and trucks.
Worldwide, the demand for palm oil continues to grow. India consumes the most, accounting for 17 percent of global purchases. It is followed by Indonesia, the European Union and China. The United States is in eighth position. In 2018, global consumption is expected to reach 65.5 million tons, or about 9 kilograms per person.
The cost of meeting this demand is extremely high. Since 1973, 41,000 square kilometers of rainforest have been cleared, burned and leveled to the ground in Kalimantan, an island belonging to Malaysia and Indonesia, to clear land for planting oil palms. From 19For 73 years, one fifth of the forest cut down in Kalimantan has been allocated to palm trees, and since 2000 – already 47 percent!
Deforestation has caused terrible damage to nature. Some 150,000 critically endangered orangutans in Kalimantan died between 1999 and 2015, and while logging and hunting were the main causes, palm oil production also played a role.
In addition, deforestation exacerbates climate change – deforestation and land use change account for almost half of Indonesia’s greenhouse gas emissions and also cause severe air pollution. Smoke from Indonesian forest fires (many of which are lit specifically to clear land for oil palms) has caused at least 12,000 deaths in 2015 alone!
People who got in the way of palm expansion also suffered: there are known cases of human rights violations – the use of child labor and forced eviction. On the Indonesian island of Sumatra, palm oil producers have razed entire villages to the ground.
They left people homeless, making them dependent on government benefits
Such environmental lawlessness is now trying to avoid in Gabon. The piece of paradise that I visited will not be affected: the territories are under the protection of the Olam company. Under an agreement with the government, the company will grow oil palms outside of it, on the lands allotted to it.
“We are trying to find a new way to develop Gabon so that we don’t cut down all of our forests but balance oil palms, agriculture and conservation,” explains Lee White, biologist and environmentalist, head of the Gabon National Parks Agency. A nation of less than two million people is embarking on a path of agricultural industrialization, and the government is relying on science to determine which parts of the country’s forest cover are of particular natural value and which can be given over to oil palm cultivation.
In Africa, as in Southeast Asia, oil palms will continue to be an important crop for a long time to come: exporting countries rely on sales revenue. It is unwise to boycott the consumption of palm oil: alternative crops will need even more land. It also makes no sense: palm oil has penetrated almost everywhere and is often included in a wide variety of products – for example, it is in food additives such as sodium lauryl sulfate, and in cosmetics, where stearic acid derived from it is added, as consumers are often unaware. So it is unlikely that we will be able to significantly reduce consumption. The only reasonable approach is to reduce the harm from production.
Indonesia and Malaysia play a central role in palm oil production, but the palm itself, Elaeis guineensis, is not native to Asia. It began to spread in West and Central Africa – it was here, in the riverbeds, deep in the jungle, that archaeologists discovered palm fruits that were 3,000 years old. Throughout the 19th century, British traders imported palm oil from Africa, using it for a wide variety of uses, such as soap, margarine and candles, and the list continued to grow. When experts learned how to isolate glycerin, the scope of the oil expanded even more – it was also used in pharmaceuticals, in the production of photographic film, perfumes and even dynamite.
By the beginning of the 20th century, oil palms were brought to Indonesia, and commercial plantations began to appear there. By the end of the 1930s, they covered only 100,000 hectares. Over the next half century, advances in agricultural technology—the selection of trees resistant to common pathogens, and the colonization of plantations by African weevils (Elaeidobius kamerunicus) for better pollination—led to increased yields and increased investment in oil palms.
However, quite recently, at 1970s – three-quarters of the island of Kalimantan was covered with luxurious rainforests. However, in an effort to meet the growing global demand for palm oil, manufacturing companies have destroyed a significant part of the woody plants. The health risks associated with eating trans fats have sparked a boom, with palm oil replacing trans fats in many foods. In addition, rising consumption has spurred demand for biofuels. The peak came in the early 2000s, when thousands of square kilometers of peatlands and lowland forests in Kalimantan were planted with oil palms.
Indonesia In 2015, this forest, which grew on a peat bog on the island of Kalimantan, was burned to clear the land for oil palms. That year, air pollution from forest fires in Indonesia, both natural and man-made, was one of the causes of at least 12,000 premature deaths. Nearly half of Indonesia’s greenhouse gas emissions are associated with deforestation or burning of high-carbon forests and peatlands
By that time, under increasing pressure from international conservation groups, the World Wide Fund for Nature, in collaboration with several of the largest producers and importers of palm oil, began to develop standards for cleaner production. Plantations certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil are not allowed to destroy “forests of particular importance, as well as sites of significant biodiversity (i.e. endangered species) and especially fragile ecosystems.” Companies are also required to minimize erosion, conserve water sources, pay workers at minimum wage rates, and seek “early, informed and non-coerced consent” from local communities.
To date, one fifth of the world’s palm oil suppliers have been certified by the RSPO. Many palm oil consumer products companies – Unilever, Nestle, Procter & Gamble – have publicly announced a move to certified purchasing exclusively within a few years. This is a big step forward, but not enough.
Humid afternoon heat. Not far from the northeastern tip of Kalimantan, small groups of elephants graze along a muddy river. When the sun goes down to the treetops, the elephants gather on the muddy shore. And now more than 50 animals are swimming into the fast waters of the Kinabatangan River to cross it, forming an even chain, shaking their huge heads and throwing fountains of water from their trunks.
The Kinabatangan Valley is one of the easiest places to see virgin forest in the Malaysian state of Sabah, located in northern Kalimantan. Directly from the boats on the water, tourists can observe representatives of the rare and most recognizable species – Bornean elephants, proboscis monkeys, Malayan kalaos, and even, if you’re lucky, orangutans.

With age, oil palms produce less fruit, and because of the increasing height of the trees, it becomes harder to harvest them
From this spectacle is breathtaking – the animals are visible at a glance. However, the reason for this “openness” is that they simply have nowhere to hide. For hundreds of kilometers along the river, the forest was completely destroyed – now only oil palms grow here. You can drive for hours, overtaking chains of palm oil tanks, and not see a single other tree.
The government of Sabah decided in the 1970s to reduce the economy’s decades-long overreliance on logging by turning its attention to agriculture and carving out long stretches of fertile land in the lowland forests – including the Kinabatangan region – for crop production. “They started with the premise that the best land should be turned over to agriculture,” explains John Payne, a biologist and environmentalist who has lived in Sabah since 19.79 years old.
During the 1980s, agricultural land in Sabah was mainly used for cocoa. However, with the decline in world prices and the introduction of the pest Conopomorpha cramerella, cocoa revenues declined and most plantations switched to oil palms. The land was so cheap that companies from the Malaysian mainland began to actively buy it, build oil plants and other infrastructure. This made it easier for farmers to sell the fruits on the market – and the clearing of forests continued with renewed vigor. Today, a fifth of the state is covered in oil palms. Sabah produces over 7 percent of the world’s palm oil.
The price paid for this in terms of ecology was monstrous. Many of the remaining fragments of the forest are fragmented and are just islands of the jungle that look untouched – almost without animals. “This area used to be home to the highest density population of orangutans, but now it’s all oil palms,” Payne sighs.
Indonesia Workers from the Kalimantan Orangutan Rescue Fund release an orangutan onto a protected island. This monkey was raised in the Nyaru Menteng Reserve: the jungle in which it lived was destroyed. After rehabilitation, the animal can return to the rainforest if it is possible to find a site that is suitable in size. As a result of deforestation and hunting in Kalimantan since 1999th to 2015, about 150 thousand orangutans died
With such losses, it is not easy to see a ray of hope. However, in Sabah, a group of scientists, activists, RSPO representatives and government officials are trying to right the wrongs of the past. Payne is the leader of the Palm Oil & Non-Government Organizations Alliance (PONGO – similar to the Latin name for orangutans, Pongo). The goal of this coalition of industry representatives and non-governmental organizations is to turn 5 percent of the largest plantations in Kalimantan into forest suitable for orangutans.
The Hutan Conservation Organization (who took me to Kinabatangan) has planted more than 100,000 trees of 38 species over the past decade in an attempt to preserve a corridor along the river for wildlife.
Until recently, Sam Mannen, a leading proponent of forest protection, was the head of the state’s forestry department. Under his leadership, the area of protected areas in Sabah has increased from 12 to 26 percent of the area of the state over the past decade and has exceeded 19,000 square kilometers. Mannen’s goal was to increase the rate to 30 percent by 2025 by linking national parks, sanctuaries and other patches of state-owned forests with newly planted “green corridors” for wildlife movement.
Mannen believes in cooperation with oil producers. “Without the oil palms, protecting nature in Sabah would be difficult,” he tells me as we chat in his office in the coastal town of Sandakan, Sabah’s former logging capital. In terms of revenues to the budget, the palm industry is only ahead of the oil industry. “Money works for the good of nature conservation,” Mannen is sure.
“On the other hand,” I object, “if it weren’t for palm trees, it wouldn’t take so much money to protect nature.” “You could make that argument as well,” says Mannen. “But in that case we would be poor.”
The palm business boom has brought obvious economic benefits to Sabah: paved roads, new schools, satellite television. In the state capital, Kota Kinabalu, brand new shopping malls gleam with European and Asian luxury goods.
Malaysia
The excavator rakes the seedlings to load them onto a conveyor that will deliver them to the parquet. In Asia, palm oil production is much better mechanized than in Africa. A facility in the Malaysian state of Perak can process 40 tons of fruit per hour and produce 2 tons of crude palm oil. Work goes on around the clock
In August of this year, Mannen lost his post as the new government in Sabah opened an investigation into allegedly illegal logging, sanctioned by the previous administration. During his almost 20 years of service, Mannen managed to annoy both sides of the “oil conflict”. Despite this, many conservationists believe that he curbed the agricultural industry. He was “a confident, effective leader representing the state with a vision for the future,” notes Payne.
In the end, the palm oil industry will have to rethink its approach, says Darrell Webber, head of the RSPO, a native of Sabah. With the support of Mannen, Webber and Malaysian activist Cynthia Ong are making ambitious efforts in this direction. Their goal is to educate everyone from small farmers with a few hectares to powerful CEOs of large companies how and why palm oil production can be improved and all production in the state recognized as sustainable.
“With demand growing and Sabah willing to meet it, we will have to set the rules of the game,” Ong is convinced.
The state hopes to achieve RSPO certification by 2025, but how to achieve this is not yet clear. “We rebuild the plane on the fly,” Ong describes the process. The Malaysian NGO Wild Asia is trying to gather hundreds of small plantations in Kinabatangan and other areas into groups that can be certified together so that these groups sell palm fruit to certified processors. Nestle, a major consumer of palm oil but no plantations, is helping to finance the project. Farmers will be able to raise more money, RSPO members such as Nestle will be able to trace the origin of the oil they supply. “We want to make it part of the buying process,” comments Nestle’s Kertia Abdul Kadir.
Since 2011, this Swiss multinational company has supervised the planting of about 700,000 trees along the Kinabatangan River in an area of 2,500 hectares.
Critics of the RSPO say it’s questionable to work with companies that have cut down forests in the past. In their opinion, one of the main requirements for certification – stop deforestation – sets the bar too low.
RSPO’s Darrell Webber, formerly of the WWF, retorts by comparing the palm industry to nothing less than St. Paul’s on the road to Damascus. “Will you forgive a great sinner, because he can become a better missionary? Webber asks. Or should all sinners be driven away? But what changes will we achieve then? It is necessary to find a way to convince all participants in the process.”
In the last decade, Webber said, more and more palm oil producers have recognized the need for change. “We managed to get the consent of many, but there are still a lot of those who do not want to cooperate. Our task is to convince the many dissenters. It will take time,” he explains.
Gabon More than half of Olam’s Mouila plantation, where workers plant palm trees, is located in the savannah. The place was chosen in such a way as not to cut down the forest. Gabon has developed a national land use plan in an attempt to “keep a balance between oil palms, agriculture and forest protection,” says National Park Agency chief Lee White
In Gabon, one of Africa’s most forested countries, palm oil is taking on new frontiers and a boom is on the horizon. Located on the equator on the western coast of the continent, Gabon occupies 267.7 thousand square kilometers. This is comparable to, say, Great Britain, only the population of Gabon is almost 35 times smaller. More than 76 percent of the African country is covered with forest, 11 percent is under the protection of national parks – a true paradise for nature.
“This is the kind of vast untouched forest that needs to be protected from any industrial development,” said Glenn Hurowitz, who heads conservation organization Mighty Earth in Washington and criticizes Olam’s business in Gabon. – There is a huge amount of degraded soils in the tropics. Why plant palm plantations in countries where there is so much virgin forest?
One of the answers is that this is the desire of Gabon. The former French colony ranks fourth in terms of GDP per capita among the countries of Sub-Saharan Africa, but most of the income comes from the oil industry. The country needs to develop other sectors as well. Hurowitz retorts that Gabon should get into ecotourism. In a relatively calm country with fantastic national parks and nature, there are only a few airfields, the roads are almost impassable, and the hotel business is in its infancy.
The development of tourism here is extremely promising – the Agency of National Parks of Gabon – Agence Nationale des Parcs Nationaux (ANPN) also advocates for this. However, tourism will not cover all the needs of the country. Gabon imports most of the food: wheat and milk are shipped from France, beef is delivered by plane from India and Brazil. The government of President Ali Bongo Ondimba, who won a controversial 2016 election, has decided to make industrial-scale agriculture – including palm oil – part of Gabon’s economy. This will require deforestation.
Aware of the conflict of interest in the struggle for public lands, the government launched a project that few places in the world had tried before: the creation of a national land use plan.
Lee White was born in the UK and has lived in Gabon since 1989 as a dual citizen. White leads ANPN and is one of the president’s closest advisers. He oversaw the compilation of the land cadastre, demarcating areas for priority agricultural development. The government allocated two new oil palm sites to Olam and sold the existing plantation. Olam is now developing 1,300 square kilometers, or 0.5 percent of Gabon’s territory. About 557 square kilometers are allocated for oilseed plantations.

The purpose of the Oakwood Forever Fund is to share the love of Jesus and share the gospel thru Oakwood Church. The fund is a quasi-endowment which allows it to fund special projects with funds in excess of a set balance and it also provides for funding for operational needs as determined by the Church based on the earnings of the Fund. The St. Martin Church Preservation Foundation was established to preserve and maintain The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Saint Martin (New Braunfels) in perpetuity.
Founded in 1850/1851, the Church is the oldest Lutheran church building still standing in the State of Texas. Volunteers take care of the historic Church and adjacent old Hortontown Cemetery. Meet Mrs. Stephanie – Our Program Director
My name is Stephanie Matthews. I have 6 children of my own. I birthed 3 beautiful girls. Then I was blessed with 3 beautiful children who needed a home. My children range in age from toddler to adult. My youngest baby girl is here at NurtureSchool. In the summer, my weekends are spent at the lake with my family. In the fall, my time is spent watching football. My Son takes us all over the state with his AAU football team and my girls all cheer. That fills our weekends.
I have worked in child care facilities for over 15 years. I worked as the Youth Director of a local church for many years where I worked with teenagers as they found their spiritual center. That was an eye opening experience! I worked with children of all ages in foster care as a CASA Volunteer. I worked with students with disabilities in the Special Education Department at a local school.
I have been at Nurture School since we opened in August 2020. I started with NurtureSchool as a classroom teacher and have accepted the position as the Program Director in 2021! My role includes overseeing and coordinating daily operations, maintaining compliance with both Minimum Licensing Regulations, Better Beginnings quality, and internal Company Policies, and ensuring the safety and proper development of the children we are entrusted with.

Discovery Preschool Programs (2–3 Years)

Prekindergarten Programs (4–5 Years)
When you walk into one of our pre-K classrooms, you’ll see artwork and

Cooking Academy™ (3 – 12 Years)
In Cooking Academy, kids learn new recipes from cultures around the world and
develop a healthy relationship with food. They’ll whip up everything from Southwest
rainbow lettuce wraps to pumpkin muffins, building their skills in STEM, communication,

Music Explorers™ (2 – 4 Years)
KinderCare families are already giving a standing ovation to our newest Learning
Adventures program: Music Explorers! Kids will learn to sing, move, listen, play
instruments, and even create their own tunes. Our original curriculum blends math,
science, social studies, literacy, and mindfulness (think yoga!) for a uniquely KinderCare

Phonics Adventures® (2 – 4 Years)
Learning how to read is a whole lot of fun at KinderCare! We help kids grow to love

We have had our two children in several different daycares. Most of the centers had education objectives and gave a great presentation when viewing their centers. However, education development was not taught and the centers were more a play center. We moved to East Lansing and looked into KinderCare, event though we thought it would be like the other centers we have experienced. Instead of a play center, KinderCare has been the best. My children are comfortable here. My son only does before and after school care, and my four year old is in the prekindergarten program. My youngest has developed writing skills, understands the days of the week, learns about the weather, and animals and brings home art work and activities that she did that week. I get a daily report everyday and I know exactly what she was doing all day.
Furthermore, the staff is very friendly with great teachers and director. The place is very clean and my children a rarely sick. Their play area outside is set up well with plenty of room. My daughter looks forward to Fridays, which are show and share, because she can bring something from home to share with her classmates and teachers. The meals are well-rounded with a good variety. Everything has been great; I highly recommend this center.

Every child begins toilet learning at a different age. Until your child shows an interest in toilet learning, we’ll provide diaper changes on an as-needed basis. When your child shows an interest, we’ll discuss how to work together to encourage toilet learning.

The curriculum I used to teach my kids these things is called Logic of English Foundations. We use Foundations A and Foundations B levels in Kindergarten. 
It’s a solid, affordable math curriculum that is scripted and easy for the parent to teach. Plus it includes hands-on games and activities that your child will love.
We use a robust secular science curriculum for kindergarten: REAL Science Odyssey Life. 
Obviously, check homeschool laws in your state or country, but usually, you don’t need to do a lot for these subjects in kindergarten.
We also use Building Character with True Stories from Nature.
You don’t need a curriculum to follow at this age. Get a set of hand instruments and just have fun!

The place is very clean and my children a rarely sick. Their play area outside is set up well with plenty of room.
