Welcome to Ashlon Kindergarten! I’m so glad you’re in my class this year. I have been teaching for many years and this is my 10th year of teaching at a kindergarten in Ashlon. This summer I vacationed in Maine with my husband, Mr. Butler, my two sons, Jack (senior at WL) and Ben (freshman at WL), and our dog Stella. I love sailing, reading and making trips to the ice cream shop. It’s my pleasure to meet you, introduce you to our assistant teacher, Ms. Abida, and share with you my favorite Charlie of the Ranch book series. After teaching first grade and split kindergarten/first grade in Prince William County for the past three years, I am passionate about teaching in the community I live in! I was born and raised in a small town in Maryland. I have lived in Northern Virginia since 2014 when I started at George Mason University to complete my degree in early childhood education. After receiving a master’s degree in 2019I moved to Arlington County for the GMU curriculum and instructions and have loved it ever since! When I’m not teaching, I love gardening, traveling, cooking, trying new restaurants and foods, meeting friends and of course reading (especially by the pool!)! I am so excited to start my ninth year as an Ashlawn member! For over 20 years I have taught in various elementary special education classes, including my current role as an elementary autonomous special education teacher. I grew up in New York, lived with my family in Chicago for six years, and now live in Virginia. I have a master’s degree in early childhood education and a dual bachelor’s degree in elementary education and special education and have taught in New York, Maryland and Virginia. When I’m not in Ashlon, I love to travel, read and spend time with my family. Two of my children are hockey players: my daughter plays hockey in college and my son is in high school and plays locally. My favorite part of studying at Ashlon is creating a warm, caring environment with my students and colleagues where we work to learn new skills, have fun and celebrate each of our successes. Before moving to Arlington, I grew up in Northville, Michigan and studied elementary education at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. Shortly after I started teaching, I received a master’s degree in teaching reading from the University of Virginia. One of the best parts of kindergarten is watching our children grow and change throughout the year. I love seeing our children progress academically, socially and emotionally. My favorite thing about studying at Ashlon is our Global Citizenship project. SUN SCHOOL PARENT CARE
Dear parents! Since September 1, a full-time psychologist of the Management Company, Pavel Taruntaev, has been working in our kindergarten. Pavel Taruntaev is a child psychologist with more than 10 years of experience, in the Sun School network since 2016. Pavel specializes in working with the mental and communicative abilities of children, working with emotional and behavioral difficulties (aggression, anxiety, fears, etc.), consulting on parent-child relationships, upbringing, development and training. Pavel will work in two main areas:
– work with parents and child-parent relationships;
– advice on the upbringing, development and behavior of the child.
DIRECTION 1: “Happy parent – happy child.” Unfortunately, all the difficulties that we face in adult life (various crises, changes, doubts, problems at work, divorce, depression, loss of interest in life, the appearance of a second child, the death of loved ones, etc.) are reflected in our children. The child is connected with parents psychologically and emotionally and reads all our feelings and experiences. Therefore, it is so important to create a psychologically stable and favorable environment for him to live and stay. Our psychologist is ready to help and suggest how to do it.
DIRECTION 2: Raising children is a voluminous and painstaking job, and sometimes parents do not know how to properly behave with a child, how to act or how to cope with this or that situation. At different stages of development and maturation of a child, we may encounter undesirable behavior, such as aggression, provocation, manipulation, tantrums, negative emotions. September 1 – Knowledge Day
An amazing and wonderful holiday Knowledge Day in kindergarten, perhaps not as solemn and exciting as at school, but because of this not less important. A new period begins in the life of children: classes, conversations, holidays that help to better understand the world around them, learn something, get to know themselves, and determine their interests. We congratulate everyone – parents, children, educators on this holiday! This day marks the beginning of the new school year. Let it be exciting, interesting and bring new knowledge, discoveries and new friends!

Did you know that we have mental arithmetic classes in the kindergarten?
Mental arithmetic is a different approach to the development of counting skills, more interesting and fun for children, as the lessons are played in a playful way. The child, concentrating on the process, trains attention and visual memory. By learning to focus on specific tasks, the child will concentrate on other activities as well.
A system of well-chosen exercises and tasks helps to improve the mood of the child, reduce the level of anxiety and stress from the study load. Children become more communicative, calm and ready for any difficulties. In mental arithmetic classes, children not only count, but also play educational board games, conduct physical education sessions, perform neuropsychological gymnastics and train in solving logical problems.

Baby yoga at Sun School Zolotaya Zvezda
Children have been doing yoga in our kindergarten for almost a year now. Children’s yoga is not yoga for adults – we play, developing the body and brain. Despite the fact that children have not been practicing for so long, you can already see good results: better balances are obtained, such as the cat pose with an outstretched arm and leg, or the tree pose. This suggests not only that the muscles have become stronger, but also that coordination has improved.
One of our children’s favorite exercises is shavasana, and if before it was very difficult for them to lie down in it even for 30 seconds, now they lie still, (!) For a couple of minutes. It’s great. And the most joyful thing is that all children go to yoga in a good mood!

Summer Camp at Sun School Golden Star
Summer is in full swing, which means it’s time for active walks, interesting activities, new acquaintances and unforgettable impressions! In just one month, our guys managed to find out what happened to our planet Earth for 4.5 billion years! How is this possible, you might think? Everything is very simple if you have very inquisitive children, in each of whom a real researcher lives, and educators who will reveal all the secrets of our planet and more in a fun and interesting way. We have already learned what space and celestial bodies are, met and made friends with the inhabitants of the oceans, learned to distinguish between dinosaurs and even made our own tame tyrannosaurus rex. And ahead of us is the study of the history of mankind and the discovery of the secrets of the future! And we also walk a lot, have already managed to get a tan and have learned to play dodgeball, football and arrange fights with water pistols. Is your summer as eventful and fun as ours?

Graduation 2022!
First graduation. First mantle. And not the first performance of the guys. How fun they were! And now this company of graduates will surprise, delight, discover something interesting for new friends at school. We helped them open up, understand themselves, learn the world, and now they will carry their knowledge, openness and kindness further. And we will miss and wait for a visit. Sun School Pajama Party Gold Star
Our core curriculum is coming to an end and we decided to throw a pajama party for the kids to celebrate the end of the school year and the start of summer camp. The pajama party began with a fun dressing up in your favorite costumes and comfortable sleepwear, because every party should have its own dress code. Children played crocodile, had pillow fights and tried on blankets like superhero capes. We also built a cute house out of mats and danced to children’s songs. Our guys have already put away their notebooks and pens, got out pajamas, toys and light clothes! How do you prepare for hot days and summer camp?

Acting skills at Sun School Gold Star
Acting classes for children allow a child to discover talent, get rid of complexes and clamps, increase their self-esteem and learn comfortable interaction with surrounding children and adults. Even if the child does not plan to become an actor, thanks to the classes, he will definitely become a more developed, versatile and liberated person! The lesson consists of several stages: bodily, respiratory, voice and speech warm-up, working out articulatory letter combinations through outdoor games, exercises for fantasy and emancipation. Each next lesson in the elements is more difficult than the previous one. Sound combinations that are more difficult to pronounce are used, or children need to use more imagination. Acting courses help the guys remove the barrier in communication and feel self-confidence. We wish our young actors to improve their talents more and more, and our experienced teachers will definitely help them in this!

Additional classes at Sun School Gold Star
To enable your child to develop comprehensively, our kindergarten offers additional circles and sections for children that will reveal new talents and hobbies of children. These are fun yoga classes, choreography, acting, robotics, mental arithmetic, lessons with a speech therapist for those who want to learn how to speak correctly, piano and vocal music lessons, as well as now much needed individual English classes with an expat teacher!
All additional classes are held according to the established schedule inside our garden, which is especially convenient for working parents. International Women’s Day at Sun School Golden Star
Spring has come, and with it the first spring holiday – March 8, the holiday of all women: mothers, grandmothers, sisters.
On March 17 and 18, morning performances dedicated to International Women’s Day were held in our kindergarten.
Mothers and grandmothers of pupils were invited to matinees. Children prepared creative gifts for their favorite guests: songs, poems and warm congratulations. Interesting competitions with mothers and grandmothers did not leave anyone indifferent. And of course, the children were very happy to give flowers and handmade gifts at the end of the matinee.
The festive events undoubtedly brought an atmosphere of spring joy and happiness to the life of the kindergarten.

Cooking classes
Winter is coming to an end and we decided to organize a cooking class for our children. As you know, what is prepared with one’s own hands is tastier. Children from the older and middle groups were involved in all stages of cooking, the teachers only controlled the process and helped a little in preparing the dish. I would like to note that the guys coped with their tasks perfectly well and prepared delicious cookies for themselves and their parents in order to taste the first spring days.

Winter at Sun School Gold Star continues!
The New Year holidays are over, but the winter continues, and with it the snow fun.
What could be more fun than building a snowman? Probably just snowdrift jumps… or snow angels? Have you tried treading paths in the snow?
And in winter you can go skating, skiing, snowboarding. The middle group talked about winter sports for a whole week!
And the younger group learned a lot of winter fairy tales, discovered the secrets of the winter forest and learned how to keep warm even in the most severe frost – all you need to do is jump and run.
Our oldest pupils also got acquainted with winter fairy tales, and also found out who lives at the North Pole, and paid special attention to improving their health in winter.

On January 29, we invite you to visit us! Be sure to take your children with you. For them, educators have prepared master classes, during which you will see how they interact with children, how clearly they explain everything. Sun School New Year Golden Star
December is the most magical month of the year, especially when you are surrounded by children who believe in magic. This year it came to our garden!
Santa Claus and the Snow Maiden came to our New Year’s party. The guys from the senior and middle groups pleased them with poems, songs and dances. That’s just a gloomy Grinch tried to steal gifts! Fortunately, the children managed to cheer him up with a skit and English songs, and everyone got presents anyway.
Our kids took part in the New Year’s master class for the holiday, danced around the Christmas tree, danced and played a lot with the Snow Maiden.

Trick or treat?
At the end of October we celebrated
scary-fun Halloween with expat teachers. The boys got to know
all the traditions of the holiday: they sang their favorite English songs, presented
the most terrible costumes and images, with closed eyes, made applications in
the form of skeletons and trained accuracy with the help of toy pumpkins. In the end
the holiday was waiting for the guys “Trick or treat” with themed treats and
funny dances.
October 1st
Autumn Festival at Sun School Golden Star!
October turned out to be rather gloomy and cold, but it was warm and colorful in our garden, because we had the first annual Autumn Day holiday!
Russian Autumn and Scarecrow came to visit the guys from the middle and senior groups, and together they sang songs, danced round dances and even staged their first performance!
And our kids played games and took part in a drawing master class. And most importantly: all the guys shared this day with their moms and dads!
September 20
Knowledge Day at Sun School Gold Star!
September for our guys started not with the classic line in the rain, but with the visit of superheroes!
Superman and Superwoman arranged competitions for children for ingenuity, endurance, and even revealed the super-ability of each! At the end of the holiday, the guys received photo diaries of their summer adventures at the Academy of Amazing Sciences and saw real fireworks from balloons and confetti.

Academy of Science and Magic Sun School
Summer has come to an end, and our young wizards have successfully graduated from Sun School Academy of Science and Magic! The guys from the senior group successfully passed their exams and received diplomas of young wizards. And the middle group, together with the teacher, staged the final relay race and made hats for graduates!

I started to take my daughter to the garden at 1 year and 8 months, a year has passed. During this time, they learned to eat, dress, go to the toilet on their own. Children’s education is top notch. Every day, new lessons are interesting, informative, fun! I regularly look at the photo report for the day and am surprised at the preparation and patience of the educators – the inexhaustible invention of the lessons, competent presentation (at the age of 2-3 years, you need to be able to interest the child in order to draw, and mold, and stick), smiles and an individual approach to each child. Sometimes I send a photo of my daughter from lessons to other mothers I know, they are surprised how you can make the head of a “funny” lion out of simple maple leaves, how to draw an abstract picture out of a balloon and paints, and make an applique Christmas tree out of cotton wool and beans.
Now we are 2 years and 7 months old – we can count up to 20, we know almost all the letters and we can even type words on the computer.
The nutrition of children is also important. We are allergic to milk, for children with a similar problem in the garden a special dairy-free menu has been developed, while the quality and variety are in no way inferior to the main menu of the garden. My name is Evgenia Obraztsova and I am the mother of twins Sofia and Anastasia, who have been attending Sun School for several months now.
During this time, the children very quickly adapted to the team of kids and educators. They have grown very well in their development and have mastered the English language quite well. We studied English from the very birth, but of course, by their 3 years old, the children had not yet begun to speak and did not speak fluently on some simple topics. Questions: Am I being unreasonable? Should his parents be given the chance to show that they can abide by a no-drinking-while-babysitting rule? Even if they can, is an absolute boundary against sleepovers and driving reasonable in these circumstances? And: Husband wants to go on this trip (and therefore will, I think, ultimately agree to care solely by my parents) but doesn’t want to hurt his parents’ feelings. Child care has been underfunded for decades, resulting in an inadequate supply of high-quality programs and too many families priced out of the system. Providers can only charge what families can afford, which often translates into near-poverty wages and limited benefits (if any) for early educators. It is no secret that COVID-19 exacerbated these past and present challenges.
A groundswell of support among voters and policymakers for continued investments in child care has emerged. This is the result of sharing data collected on the status of child care and amplifying the experiences of providers and families.
Our 2020 report, Picking Up the Pieces, focused on how the COVID‑19 pandemic was affecting child care supply, affordability and quality. Demanding Change follows up on our 2020 report and focuses on four aspects of the child care system and the issues impacting them:
This was particularly true for marginalized and often-overlooked communities. Black and Latino families are more likely to have someone who works a nonstandard hour schedule, and this type of child care is in short supply nationwide.
As of late 2020, some programs were still listed as temporarily closed and may open again. However, many of these providers are permanently closed. 
Access to timely data empowers parents searching for child care providers that meet their needs and preferences. It enables advocates, policymakers and other change makers to identify critical needs and inequities, generate effective solutions, target policy proposals and investments effectively and subsequently evaluate the effectiveness of investments. Yet, child care data in the U.S. are currently siloed and inconsistently defined across various state, local and non-governmental organizations – making it nearly impossible to get a full picture of the needs and opportunities in our nation’s child care system. 
CCAoA’s National Data System powered by WLS is built upon these technologies to collect cross-state provider-level supply and demand data. 
It is not enough to simply count the number of licensed child care slots in a community. The number of slots in high-quality settings is equally, if not more, important. Time and again, research has shown that children who attend high-quality programs have more positive long-term outcomes, such as higher graduation rates from high school, higher income and better physical health and stronger families. Short-term gains were noted by researchers in the U.K., who found that young children who continued to attend child care during the pandemic made more gains in language development and vocabulary growth. This was especially true for children from low-income families. A meta-analysis of 22 studies found that participation in high-quality early care and education can lead to reductions in special education placement and increases in high school graduation rates. Some estimate that for every dollar spent on high-quality child care, there is a 13% return on investment annually.
From infancy, children need strong social‑emotional connections with responsive caregivers. These interactions can lead to future positive outcomes in academics, interpersonal skills, self‑regulation and motivation.
These systems vary considerably across the states in terms of provider participation, measures of quality and financial incentives associated with meeting those measures. In many instances, QRIS serves as a classification structure to provide families with a simple resource to understand the quality of area child care programs. According to the National Center on Early Childhood Quality Assurance, QRIS ratings can be applied to early- and school-age care and education programs that meet a set of defined program standards. QRIS ratings are typically on a three-, four- or five-step scale. In most states, participation in QRIS is voluntary. 
These barriers can be impossible to overcome among programs that are struggling to stay in business during this chaotic time. Additionally, while states have directed considerable investment to QRIS, research suggests that states’ defined quality measures may only show modest improvements in some child outcomes.
Data from the After School Alliance suggests that nearly 25 million students cannot access after school programs, with availability and expense cited as the primary obstacles to participation. Additionally, 7.7 million children are alone and unsupervised after school. The federal government provides some assistance to help families with school-aged children afford care: the Child Care & Development Block Grant (CCDBG), administered by the Department of Health and Human Services, and the 21st Century Community Learning Centers program (21CCLC), administered by the Department of Education.
This age group is also the most likely to be served in a home-based setting. 21CCLC provides roughly $1 billion per year for states to support before- and after-school care. States provide support through competitive grants to school districts or community-based organizations focused on improving academic outcomes for those students who need help the most. According to the most recently available data, 21CCLC served 2 million students during the 2016-2017 school year.
If current funding levels hold, that means states would have at least $7 billion a year to support care for school-aged children. It will be critical for state and local leaders to collaborate and coordinate these two funding streams, which could be administered by different lead agencies and have different program goals and eligibility requirements. As a next step, policymakers and interested stakeholders should begin planning for this transition in the near term so the millions of unserved families with school-aged children receive this support when these investments become available.
We at CCAoA are the forefront of identifying, adapting and scaling innovative research techniques and data collection methods to answer these and other questions to better understand the demand for child care across the country.
They also assume that parents are working during the same time that child care programs in their ZIP code or county are open and therefore often don’t account for parents who work during the early morning or night nontraditional hour shifts. They also do not account for parents needing care for children with special needs or parents that need temporary care. 
National surveys like the 2019 Early Childhood Program Participation (ECPP) Survey and the 2012 National Study of Early Care and Education (NSECE) provide rich data on the characteristics that are important to parents searching for child care.
This approach is critical, as parent and child care provider experiences on the ground can change from day to day. The COVID-19 pandemic has fueled such rapid changes and turned our ideas about demand upside down. Health care policy, community spread and public health decisions have dramatically altered the demand for child care of families across the country.
Ultimately, however, as described above, these Census data only represent a potential demand for child care rather than actual quantities of families actively searching for or in need of child care. These analyses are underpinned by the assumption that working parents need care, but that is not always the case.
A score of 50 demonstrates half the relative search volume as a score of 100. The more searches in the population (e.g., the entire United States), the more reliable a GTIS is. Less populous areas with correspondingly fewer searches from which to sample (e.g., South Dakota) will see more variation in day‑to‑day GTIS when keeping the same geography, time range and search topic consistent. This means that GTIS therefore represents relative demand, not actual demand quantified in number of searches or persons.
Both states saw summer upticks in demand that fell around the time school resumed in the fall. Each state’s data are presented with the 95% confidence interval based on the samples, meaning relative demand could have reasonably been anywhere within these ranges. At the local level, we saw variation across these states as well. With the relative way Google presents its interest scores, these maps demonstrate patterns beyond those that would simply reflect population. In fact, the more urban media markets were often not the ones with the highest relative demand. For example, the Amarillo, Waco and Beaumont markets had relatively higher search interest than Dallas, Austin and Houston for the study period in Texas. Similarly, the Fargo, North Dakota market outpaced its Twin Cities, Minnesota counterpart.
CCAoA is building the capacity to scale these data collection methods to study entire areas around the country. We will continue to build on this work to better understand demand for child care. So although there may be fewer staff members on the payroll, child care programs still have to pay their existing staff with less money coming in. Child care programs need a certain number of children in order to make ends meet and pay for staffing and other expenses. The staffing shortages are contributing to a vicious cycle of increased costs. At the same time, many programs cannot raise prices for parents who are already struggling to pay the current price. For FCC programs, there are fewer data available. However, according to a recent survey of child care providers by NAEYC, FCC homes reported higher enrollment rates than centers, but an average daily attendance rate lower than centers. This could indicate that many children in these programs are only attending part-time or sporadically. Fewer children attending full-time is having a dire impact on FCC programs’ bottom lines. 
On average, a married couple with an infant in California paid 16.7% of income for center‑based care. In Washington, FCC for a married couple with an infant would take up 11.8% of annual income. Please see our Appendices for complete rankings of states by age group and provider type.
As noted by the Bipartisan Policy Center, if programs were to charge families the amount that they needed to run at minimum licensing and safety standards, many families would not be able to afford it. The true cost of offering high-quality child care would be even more out of reach for parents. For example, hiring more classroom teachers to reduce the teacher-child ratio beyond minimum licensing would be very costly for a program. This situation puts child care providers in a situation where they need to find additional sources of funding such as grants or risk operating at a loss.
In response to multiple requests for a national price of child care, we have attempted these calculations for the past two years. We report three approaches for child care prices for an infant and a 4-year-old in center-based and family child care homes. We discuss each methodology in more detail below. We have not included school-age prices at this time because of the enormous variability in this dataset across the country. 
S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recommendation that the price of child care be no more than 7% of household income. For a single parent, this would be 35% of household income.
In May 2018, the average wage for a child care professional in a center was $11.83 per hour, or $24,610 per year. By May 2020, wages had barely moved, with a child care professional in a center earning an average of $12.24 or $25,460 annually. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the number of child care professionals in centers dropped from 564,630 to 494,360. A study from Louisiana found that those who worked in private child care programs were more likely to leave the sector entirely compared to those who taught in public pre-K or Head Start programs. Infant and toddler teachers are also more likely to leave the field entirely when compared to those who taught preschool-age children. Family child care (FCC) providers face their own set of challenges that may contribute to leaving the field. In a recent study, FCC providers described feelings of isolation and being underpaid. They often find taking time off for family issues is especially challenging as they do not have substitute staff.
Finally, these providers described the stress associated with playing multiple roles in their programs (educator, accountant, custodian, nutritionist, nurse, social worker, etc.). Child care professionals from all settings are underpaid and rarely get the respect they deserve. 
Four out of five center-based survey respondents reported that they are experiencing staffing shortages. Furthermore, 83% of respondents from minority-owned programs and 88% of respondents working in programs that serve families needing financial assistance reported staffing shortages. These shortages result in longer waitlists, reduced operating hours and fewer children served. 
One question from the RAPID-CC survey asks: What would you like your elected officials or other policymakers (for example, U.S. Congress, state and local leaders) to know about how your family is doing or what you need during this time? Because this is a longitudinal survey, respondents may have answered this question multiple times over the course of several months. To avoid skewing the results, we only included one comment per respondent. This resulted in a total of 1,556 comments. 
Child care is essential for working families to continue paying the bills. Businesses need child care in order to retain its workforce and continue to earn profits. State and local governments, along with the federal government, need child care for the economy to recover. Most importantly, child care is essential to our young children. The educational, social and emotional foundations that they receive from child care programs can set the trajectory for their future success – in school and in life. It’s time to stop paying lip service to the child care workforce and start giving them the financial and emotional support they need in order to get America’s future off to a great start. 
Those responsible for providing child care and early education to young children have been undervalued as demonstrated by continued low wages and lack of benefits. As a result, more and more are leaving the field entirely, exacerbating an existing staffing crisis nationwide. The much‑needed assistance from the federal government in the form of the CARES Act, Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act, and the ARP Act was a critical first step for the system to recover from the challenges brought on by COVID-19.

All alias names derived from SSN Trace results are included in the criminal record searches listed below. The SSN Trace is not conducted through the Social Security Administration and may not be used as the basis for any employment decision, and it is not confirmation of an individual’s identity.
For some jurisdictions, no information is available at all. For jurisdictions in which some criminal data is included, it may be limited to a subset of criminal convictions (e.g., the database may not include arrest information or all types of convictions). In addition, the frequency with which the records in this database are updated varies from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. Sterling verifies any possible hits in this database against primary source records in the courts of original jurisdiction.
This check may report records relating to federal crimes (for example, money laundering, drug trafficking, kidnapping, counterfeiting, racketeering, and crimes committed across state lines). Sterling will report all available criminal history information that can be reported pursuant to the Fair Credit Reporting Act and applicable state laws, which, depending on the jurisdiction, may not include history such as arrests, pending cases, or non-conviction records more than 7 years old.
