Who Should You Use as a Professional Reference? – Business Career Center

By Rachel Pelta

A job offer is usually contingent on having positive professional references. And whether you
need one or three, figuring out who to use as a professional reference can be difficult if you
don’t have a lot of work experience. So, who should you use as a professional reference?

Who to Use as a Professional Reference
No matter your work history, the one thing to keep in mind is that a professional reference is
someone who can discuss your work-related skills and abilities (both hard and soft skills). It’s
different from a personal reference, who can speak to your personal traits (like how good you
are with animals or how friendly you are). Here are the top candidates you should consider
when asked to provide professional references.

1. Former Boss and Coworkers
The best professional references are often your former boss and coworkers. They have seen
your technical abilities in action and can talk about how you use them in the workplace.
2. People at Your Internship
People from a current or former internship also make fantastic professional references. While
your internship supervisor would be ideal, you can also ask coworkers – but avoid tapping other
interns. They may be able to sing your praises, but another intern may not have experience
being a professional reference, which could impact how the employer views your candidacy.
3. Current Coworkers
Sometimes you may need to use your current coworkers as a reference. If that’s your situation,
ask someone you trust to keep your job offer under wraps! Theoretically, you could use your
current boss, but that is risky. If the job offer doesn’t work out, you could damage your
relationship and future at the company.
4. Clients
Perhaps you earned extra money babysitting or mowing lawns. This means you’ve got a client
list and potential professional references to discuss your skills and work ethic with employers.
5. Where You Volunteer
Not all job seekers have paid work experience, and that’s OK. If you’ve volunteered, the
supervisor or coordinator where you volunteered makes an excellent reference. Likewise, fellow
volunteers can be a reference as long as they speak to your professional abilities.
6. A Professor or Teacher
Finally, a professor or teacher (present or former) can be a professional reference. This is
especially true if that person supervised a long-term project or experiment. But you can still ask
for a professional reference if the professor or teacher can speak to your professional skills (like
how you led a group project).
No matter who you choose as a professional reference, it’s a good idea to verify their contact
information regularly and to give them a heads up before a prospective employer tries to set up
a call. Learn more about the importance of professional references and how to ask someone to
be yours on the Forage blog.

How to Choose Professional References for a Job

When it comes to getting hired, professional references can close the deal. Learn how to choose and who to use as a job reference.

By Jennifer Parris

Job references are one major aspect of job searching. We need to choose people who are the best possible stand-ins for ourselves—people we trust to support us, stand with us, and make us out to be the best possible candidate for the job.

Finding people to say good things about you may sound like an easy task. However, choosing people who can speak to your skills and work ethic on a professional level should be taken seriously. That’s why it’s important for job seekers to pay close attention to the finer details of securing job references.

What Is a Professional Reference?

A professional job reference is someone who can “talk up” your ability to do the job. Usually, this reference is a boss or coworker. However, a professional reference can also come from a client or a vendor, depending on your employment situation.

In the case of someone with no work experience, finding a professional reference can be tricky. However, with a little bit of creative thinking, you can find people who can highlight your skills and use them as a professional reference.

What’s a Personal Reference?

Personal references are people who can speak to who you are as a person, but not your professional abilities. For example, a personal reference can talk about your integrity or character, but can’t talk about your familiarity with social media marketing.

As a rule, employers don’t ask for personal references. And though you may be tempted to use a personal reference as a professional reference, this is generally not advised.

Who to Use as a Job Reference (and Who to Skip)

Sometimes it’s hard to find professional references, especially if you haven’t had a lot of work experience, have had some jobs that you’d like to leave off your resume, or have employment gaps.

But when choosing who to use as a job reference, you want to select people who can not only speak to your professional abilities but will also say positive things about those abilities. And you should also choose people who employers would consider unbiased in their reference.

Family

While family members may seem like an easy choice, they are not the best choice for a professional reference.

The one exception might be if you’ve worked for a family business and your family member is also your boss (or coworker). In this case, you might list them as a reference. However, be warned that if you are related, the hiring manager may discount this reference or give it less value because you are related, on the assumption that the reference may not be as neutral for you as they would be for a non-family member.

Friends

It may also be tempting to ask your friends, family friends, and members of your softball team to act as professional references. However, similar to using family for professional references, friends do not make the best choice unless they can talk about your professional skills and abilities.

Supervisors

Supervisors generally make fantastic professional references. Even if you’re applying for a supervisory position, your boss can talk about what kind of employee you are and what kind of supervisor you might make.

In general, you should use a past supervisor for a professional reference.

Coworkers

Past and current colleagues are great references when you can’t use a supervisor. Just make sure you’re on good terms with them, and they can speak about your professional skills and big wins.

Someone at the Company

If you happen to know someone that works at the company you’re applying to, try to use them as a professional reference. Positive references from a current employee can go a long way toward helping you get an offer.

How to Choose a Professional Reference

Having a varied list of references can paint a bigger picture for your future employer as to what kind of employee you’d really be. Try to get at least two to three of these categories represented:

  • Someone you worked with (i.e., a former colleague or peer)
  • A former boss
  • A client who hired you (especially if you’re looking to land freelance work)
  • Someone who worked for you, like another employee or even an intern

Evaluation Criteria

Before reaching out to anyone, evaluate how good of a professional reference they might be. This means assessing your current relationship with them and how they might act as a reference.

Start with the possible references who are currently a part of your life. This can be people you work with now or people you used to work with (or for) but still have regular contact with.

Then, assess whether or not those people are communicative. You want references who respond to requests quickly. If someone on your list has a habit of not returning your messages for weeks, consider skipping them as a reference.

Finally, think about what your reference should say. This goes beyond the merely positive, “They were wonderful to work with.” Your reference should also add compelling details about you as a worker to give the employer a fuller picture of who you are and how you work.

But, in addition to being compelling, what can your reference say? Ask yourself if they are aware of or can speak to your major work accomplishments. Can they speak about your strengths and areas of expertise? Will they be able to handle questions about you with grace? If you’re not sure about the answers, either have a discussion with your potential reference about these topics or choose someone else.

How to Ask and Prep a Professional Reference

Once you’ve established your list of professional references, don’t supply them to employers without asking them to act as a reference.

More than likely, your job reference would be happy to do it—just don’t assume that they will. So, how do you ask someone to be your reference? And how do you prepare them to be a stellar professional reference?

Reach Out Before

Ideally, you’ll ask your references to act as a reference long before you need them. If you can, contact people at the beginning of your job search and see if they’re willing to do it. This gives them time to think about your request without any pressure (“I need an answer by tomorrow!”). It also gives you time to prepare them when they do get the reference request.

Tell Them It’s Coming

As a rule, you will not supply references until after you’ve finished a final interview, but before you’ve secured a job offer. Once you’ve been asked for the references, reach out and let your reference know they will likely be contacted in the near future. Let them know who will contact them, what the position is, and, if appropriate, what was discussed during your interview. If you have the information about how the references will be contacted (you may not, though), then let you contacts know this.

Tell Them Your Goals

When speaking with your reference, let them know how the position you’re applying for ties into your career goals and how your work with them would make you a top candidate for the job. Then, they can give a clearer reference with specific talking points that can support their argument for offering you the job.

Give Specifics

Explain what you would like them to say. For example, you can ask a former boss to offer insight into your work ethic and your ability to come up with new ideas but kindly remind them of specific achievements or professional wins you’ve added that made a positive impact in past positions, especially if it’s been a while.

Make Your List of Professional References

One final tip: After your references have spoken to your potential employer, make sure you thank your reference and let them know the outcome. Even if you didn’t get the job, it’s a nice way to acknowledge what the reference has done for you professionally.

While it’s no longer a common practice to put “references available upon request” on your resume, you still need professional job references ready to speak on your behalf if you’re in an active job search. More importantly, though, you need job references who know they are your professional reference and are ready to respond when the call comes.

ACTIVITIES FOR A 2 YEAR OLD BIRTHDAY PARTY AT HOME

Since my 2-year-old daughter has a birthday in the winter and we didn’t want to spend much, we decided to throw her a party at home. I wrote a blog post here about tips on how to throw a toddler birthday party at home but let’s talk about activities that I laid out so 4 toddlers wouldn’t destroy my apartment and had fun. The main thing is to keep it simple and mess-free.

ACTIVITIES FOR A 2-YEAR-OLD BIRTHDAY PARTY AT HOME

    Create stations.

I created different “stations” around our living room. Points I paid attention to were: mess-free and no small details. So the stations included: puzzles station, activity cube (you can see how I made one here), blocks station that I borrowed from a friend, basket with balls, books, painting station.

For the painting station, I taped a paper roll to a floor, put some stickers, stampers and Do a Dot art. I opted against paint and crayons since I didn’t want to chase young artists and prevent them from drawing on the walls in our rental.

I also opted against play-dough after few bad experiences with my daughter ruining our rug 🙂

    Dance and Freeze

You’d be surprised how much toddlers LOVE this game. You basically put the music on, tell them to move and freeze when the music stops.

    Active games

For our active toddlers, we got a tunnel from Ikea with a house. It was also a big hit since it’s so fun to get stuck in the tunnel together 😉

    “Photobooth”

We had a photo booth with props but didn’t have time to do it. It was simply a backdrop with wild animals on it. Kids were happy 😀

Adults got busy talking and kids were entertained with stations

    Cake time and birthday song

    A must-have for any birthday 🙂

    Toddler Parade

Another cool idea that I had planned but didn’t do since everyone was so busy is a Toddler Parade. You can give them musical instruments – drums, shakers, horns, etc. and have them follow you around the house. Also, you can give them ribbons and make them do a dance parade. You can make shakers from corn and paper which could also be a fun activity.

As I mentioned before, almost 3 hours flew by while adults were talking, kids were playing at the “stations”. Everyone had so much fun! How do you usually entertain toddlers?

10 December Birthday Party Ideas For 2 Year Old – Fun In The Yard

Being born on December 25th is one of the rarest birthdays a human can have. Sadly, kids born at the end of the year often get ‘included’ in parties that aren’t about them at all.

Your December baby deserves a special party just for them. Finding the right December birthday party ideas for 2 year olds is tough, but I’ll help you make it their best day ever.

A good December birthday party idea for a 2 year old needs to be fun and straightforward. Most 2 year olds aren’t invested in interacting with their peers but rather playing alongside them, so you need activities that kids can do around each other but experience individually. Stick with bright colors and lots of physical activity for a happy little one.

5 December Birthday Party Ideas For 2 Year Old Girl

December birthday party ideas for a 2 year old girl should be something they can do easily. Lots of music and interactive things that make noise or feel interesting make a memorable little girl’s party.

Here are five easy December birthday party ideas For Girls:

    1 – Play Dress Up

Costumes are a ton of fun. Giving a 2 year old her choice of tiaras, dress-up shoes, and fabrics with lots of different textures and colors will make her day. Be sure to throw in a lot of jackets and scarf options for staying warm.

Choose costumes that are seasonally appropriate or easy to modify. Princess dresses aren’t very warm, but fleece-lined leggings and a long-sleeved shirt underneath will make it more comfortable.

Once your daughter and her friends are all dressed, have a parade so they can show off their fashion creations.

    2 – Frozen Bubble Surprise

December is one of the coldest months of the year. That means most December babies don’t get a lot of outdoor parties. Fortunately, kids love bubbles, and they freeze beautifully. Check out this video to see what happens.

Make sure the kids are dressed up warmly and plan to serve lots of hot cocoa at an outdoor party.

Then, grab some bubble guns like the IDEE Gatling Bubble Machine from Amazon and get ready to make a storm of rapidly freezing beautiful bubbles. These bubble makers can fire off over eight hundred bubbles per minute.

    3 – Frozen, But Warm

Speaking of princess costumes and winter fun, choose a favorite wintertime movie like Frozen. You can use the characters for decor inspiration and play the actual movie for the kids indoors, where they’ll stay toasty. Don’t forget the popcorn.

Consider having mini versions of movie theater snacks and setting out rows of kids’ chairs like a theater for a movie party.

You can even set up curtains around the TV for that ‘real’ theater experience. Best of all, you can pause for potty breaks, so no one misses their favorite part of the show.

    4 – Winter Wonderland

If you’re lucky enough to live somewhere that has virtually guaranteed snow for December birthday parties, then set up an outdoor tent with a heat lamp inside for kids to get warm.

Decorate the snow with biodegradable glitter and put up balloons and streamers. Then set up a bunch of shovels and sandcastle-making supplies like plastic buckets so the kids can make sparkly ‘snow castles’ outside.

If you want to get extra creative, let the kids decorate their snow castles. Choose some large shells or other safe yet colorful items too large to swallow. A handful of small flags for the towers will make the castles come to life.

    5 – Sugar Cookies

Some things are just way over your head when you’re two, but art and cookies are fantastic. Have a sugar cookie party where each kid gets to pick out a couple of personal (pre-baked) cookies.

Mix up some colored icings and set out bowls of fun toppings like sprinkles and colored sugar.

After that, all you need is some music and a good plan for cleaning up later. This sort of easy idea lets kids be themselves, create something fun, and you don’t need to stick it to the fridge later because they’ll eat it.

Parents and older siblings can also get in on the fun and help make some beautiful cookies.

5 December Birthday Party Ideas For 2 Year Old Boy

Like girls, 2 year old boys don’t have complex entertainment needs. Mostly, they want to laugh, run around, and play with whatever they can reach. Fortunately, that makes party planning easy.

Here are five great December birthday party ideas for 2 year old boys:

    1 – Dig It

Have you ever watched your kid dig in a sandbox? It might not seem like adult fun, but they love it. Recreate that summer feeling by setting up the snow for a fun outdoor Dig-It party.

All you need are shovels, buckets, and some hidden surprises. Mark off an area in the snow as the ‘snow-box’ and then bury a few party favors.

Plastic dinosaurs are perfect for this sort of occasion because you can get a lot of them, and it’s kind of like digging for fossils.

I suggest larger toys that are safer for toddlers, like the JOYIN 6 Pack 12″ to 14″ Educational Realistic Jumbo Dinosaur Figures from Amazon.

Bury them in the snow and let each kid dig one out to keep. Then they can play with their dinos indoors where it’s warmer.

    2 – Hockey

2 year olds probably aren’t ready for an actual hockey rink. However, you can get oversized hovering hockey puck toys and play some indoor hockey.

A few plastic masks for the guests and a jersey for the birthday boy will make for a memorable sporty day out of the snow.

If you want to be extra, get a white or blue blanket or throw rug and set up some goals to knock the floating pucks through.

The kids may or may not care at that age, but it will make for some excellent photos anyway. However, I don’t recommend handing little one’s hockey sticks.

3 – Sledding or Floor Sledding

Sleds are a scream, but the average two-year-old isn’t ready to tackle the big-kid hills just yet. Skip the chance you could run into a tree and get some plastic sled toys and some ropes.

Whether you have snow outside, or you put them on top of blankets and pull them around a bare floor, the kids will have a blast. You can even get extra by having the adults wear ‘sled dog’ ears and tails.

    4 – Ice Road Truckers

Who said you couldn’t play trucks in the snow? At two, many vehicles that are safe to play with have oversized wheels, so they’re easier to drive in light snow than Hotwheels.

Have an ice road truckers party where everyone brings a big toy truck to play with outside.

Set up some ‘roads’ for the kids. This is easier than you think because all you’ll need is some yellow chalk and black food coloring.

Mix up the black food coloring with water and put it in a fine-mist spray bottle. Please don’t go crazy with it, or you’ll make an icy mess, but you can use it to mark out some roads sparingly.

Then grate up the chalk and sprinkle it down the center for a road-like effect.

    5 – Fire Fighters

Have a party with smores. Instead of risking kids around a real fire, build some out of paper and LED lights indoors and have the kids be ‘firemen.’ A stack of firefighter hats for little boys is easy to find online.

Play on the fire theme for your decor and choose lots of red, yellow, and orange. Toss on a favorite fire-fighter-themed show, movie, or episode in the background.

Everyone gets to stay warm indoors, and you have an excuse to serve marshmallows and chocolate.

Helpful Tips To Know About December Birthday Party Ideas For 2 Year Old

Having a toddler birthday party can be a lot of fun if you don’t overthink it too much. In December, the best two-year-old birthday parties either use the weather as a toy or as an excuse to head indoors.

Here are more helpful tips to know about December birthday parties for 2 year olds.

    • Little kids don’t care about expensive, highly detailed parties. They want to have fun, run around, and be mentally stimulated. Colors and noise matter more at this age than what your theme is.
    • Don’t worry about ‘boys’ and ‘girls’ ideas so much. If your 2 year old girl would rather dig up a dinosaur than build a sparkly castle, do that instead.
    • When in doubt, play the simplest kid’s games. At two, children are easy to amuse. If they’re ready for it, a little red light green light or pin the antlers on the reindeer will be more than enough to keep toddlers happy.

    Final Thoughts

More than any other month, December kids tend to get their birthdays mashed up with other winter celebrations. Make sure your little one feels special and knows their day is just for them.

Having a December birthday party, they won’t soon forget by making sure the focus is on simple, physical, interactive, tasty, and brightly colored games and activities.

Remember to take lots of pictures, and don’t worry too much if your two-year-old would rather dance, watch a show, or eat cookies than play whatever games you so painstakingly curated for them.

The main thing to remember is that active entertainment should alternate with quiet ones. And vice versa. Round dance of various impressions. And be sure to prepare small gifts for all children. It can be kinder surprises, juice bags, balloons, crackers, Barney’s sweet bears. Everything that will appeal to kids 5 years old.

Ideas for children’s birthday contests 5 years old can be:

    • Balloon attack

The children are divided into two teams and stand on both sides of the blanket with balloons held by two adult participants. Then, on the whistle, they shake the balls. They fly apart. And the task of the children is to transfer them to the side of the rivals. The one with the fewest balls at the end wins.

    • Find a brother

The leader tells each child what animal they are. And all children with sounds and gestures, without words, must find a mate. Your brothers and sisters. The pair of children who recognize each other the fastest wins.

    • Tell me who I am

The guys are also divided into two teams and must guess the heroes of fairy tales and cartoons and complete the sentence. The host says – Winnie and the children finish – Pooh, and for example Karabas – Barabas, Doctor Aibolit, Jake and the Neverland Pirates, Kid and Carlson, Peter Pan. And that team of children wins, which has more guessed names in its assets.

    • Candy Salad

This competition is sure to please all the little sweet tooth. Especially on a day like this. Large bags of sweets are placed on one and the other side of the room. All children are given tablespoons. And two teams of dexterous and active guys compete in turn in who will quickly transfer all the sweets to the bowls located at the end of the room. He will mix all the sweets there with a large ladle and make his own unique, delicious, candy salad. Then, of course, everyone who wants to try it and the contestants themselves, respectively. Both the girl and the boys will fill up from the belly, but what celebration of a children’s birthday is complete without sweets.

Noisy games should replace quiet ones.

And of course all children are endlessly happy to play and play. Games can be the following:

Games for children 5 years old:

    • Repeat after me

All the guys sit in a circle. And one gets up and starts. For example, it turns around itself. The next child repeats this movement and adds something of his own, for example, bouncing. And so in a circle. If someone goes astray, then out of the game. A sea of laughter and fun is guaranteed. What else do you need on your birthday?

    • Guess the object

Tie a child’s eyes with a scarf, give a soft toy into his hands and he must guess by touch what kind of object it is, the name of the toy and what it is for. The trick is that the next child is no longer given a soft toy, but, for example, a book or a part from a designer. The constant change of objects of guessing delivers many violent emotions to the children who have already taken part.

    • Don’t get caught by the crocodile

Pillows are arranged on the floor in different order. These are crocodiles. You need to cross to the other side without getting caught by any of them, without stepping on anyone. The child remembers where the crocodiles lay down, they blindfold him again and he sets off. The winner is the one who passes all the crocodiles with brilliance.

    • Unknown hero

Very interesting game. The host prepares cards in advance with the name of different fairy-tale characters. The main condition is that they should be very familiar to children and easily guessed. Then the first player draws a card with a name that he does not see. This card is inserted into a paper cap. She’s already on top of his head. All children see this name except the player. And he has to guess who the hero is. For example, Winnie the Pooh. Questions might be: Am I from a cartoon? Answer: About Winnie the Pooh. What color am I? – Brown. That I love? – Med. Fun for all kids. And for those who guess. And those who help him in this.

    • Musical chairs

Chairs arranged in a row. They should be one less than the children playing. Then joyful and energetic music is turned on. The guys are circling around these chairs. Then, at the signal of the presenter, the music stops abruptly and the children should sit on chairs. One of the participants is left without a chair, he leaves. Again one chair is removed. The cheerful music continues and again which of the guys will be faster. There should be one chair left and one lucky winner at the end. Of course, all participants receive sweet consolation prizes.

The favorite guest of the holiday is a delicious cake.

    The end of the holiday

And, finally, all the celebrants are invited to the table, where you can thoroughly satisfy your hunger. The long-awaited end of the gala dinner, of course, is a large and appetizing cake – 5 years old. At this sweet moment, all guests, regardless of age, can sing birthday greetings in funny, cartoonish voices.

And a funny home photo session of the hero of the occasion with guests can serve as the final chord of a birthday. Girls will be especially happy. All those present can receive a souvenir photo taken with a Polaroid camera. The joy of snapshots is very lively and vibrant. It is very pleasant to watch happy and radiant children when their 5th birthday is a success.

And in parting, a happy birthday person can hug his guests and return words of gratitude and love to them for a kind and wonderful birthday.

    A pleasure to remember.

Children’s birthday at home! Holiday ideas

Children do not like to sit at the table for a long time, while others do not eat well at a party, so we advise you to make a feast with interesting pauses for games and contests. For example, while the little guests are gathering, you can set the table and offer light snacks, games, then a hot dish, a pause for competitions and, of course, a cake at the end! How to choose a birthday cake according to the sign of the zodiac, we considered in a previous article.

You can order home food delivery from the children’s menu at restaurant “Manana Mama” : french fries, children’s kebab or shish kebab, fish cakes with mashed potatoes and what will undoubtedly surprise the children are colored khinkali! Menu, cost and promotions on the site.

Children often eat familiar foods and are not always willing to experiment. You can order food delivery from Papa Carlo and choose classic dishes such as Olivier salad, thin crust pizza, nuggets, french fries, cheese balls and burgers. Menu, prices and promotions on the site.

If guests of different ages are going to the party, you can order several options for dishes. Food delivery restaurant “Zhuravlina” offers dumplings and dumplings with different fillings to choose from. Another great option for a children’s table is pancakes and pancakes, “Olivier” and “Cutlet in Kiev”. Menu, prices and promotions on the site.

By the way, please note that not all children like sweet juice and can drink only water. Therefore, we advise you to prepare water bottles , and so that the kids do not confuse their bottles, you can draw a pattern on it or give each a sticker so that he sticks it on a bottle of water and knows “his bottle”. The kid will not lose such water and after any game he will drink with pleasure! Remember to stock up on water in advance and prepare a supply in case you need an additive.

And now let’s take a closer look at contests !

    • Relay race: make candy soup

Divide the participants into two teams, place two pots, put a handful of sweets at a distance of 2 meters from them, give each participant a spoon or ladle. It is necessary to transfer one candy in a spoon to the pan. In order for friendship to win, help those who are lagging behind, and at the end you can give everyone the same candy prizes.

    • Guessing game

Blindfold. We give you a soft toy. You have to guess who it is. While guessing, you can joke, make assumptions, call the bear a giraffe.

    • Cold-hot

The usual game of finding a hidden toy. Children leave the room, the host hides the toy, calls everyone back to the room. According to the words “cold-warmer-hot”, children understand where to look.

    • Air hockey

There may be options. You need to drive the balls into the invented gates in different ways.

    • Alyonushka’s balloon

At speed we tie a scarf on the balloon and draw a face. By the way, for example, you can decorate a couple of balls with different faces in advance.

    • Kangaroo relay

Participants are put on a small light bag around their neck, any soft toy can be put as a kangaroo. Task: we jump 5 meters, hand over the kangaroo to kindergarten (bag or hoop), go back, pass the bag to the next team member. You can complicate and jump with a ball sandwiched between your knees.

    • Greedy beef

Scatter a lot of inflated balls without strings on the floor. Task: you need to keep as many balls on yourself as possible: under the T-shirt, pin with hairpins, hold the “tail” with your teeth, hold the balls with your hands and feet. Don’t forget to take a photo of the winner.

    • Driving a car

The game can be divided into two stages. The first stage: we select or draw a track on the floor, together we build obstacles on it from toys, bags, pillows. We give the children on the steering wheel (something round, for example, plates). The second task – children need to drive along the track, avoiding obstacles. Let the kids choose new detours or just ride as they like and, of course, honk and beep.

    • Coloring pages

When everyone has played, tired, you can offer some creative task. It could be a coloring house. Just do not give paints – let them use pencils and wax crayons or, in extreme cases, felt-tip pens.

    • Bowling

Do you have skittles at home? If not, it doesn’t matter, 5 plastic bottles with water or beans, pasta inside for stability will solve this issue. Prepare the ball – the older the children, the smaller the ball and vice versa. Define the rules in advance: for example, each player will have two attempts at a time.

    • Face painting

Can you draw a kitten or a teddy bear? Then you can try to decorate the guests in your favorite characters, and if this is not possible, then you can draw small drawings on your hand: butterflies, hearts, cars, flowers. And you can make translations and decorate the hands of little guests.

    • Wake up the dragon game

Leader wearing a dragon mask or hat (can be replaced with any animal). Children are given squeakers, whistles. Children (forest kind animals) scatter into their minks (floor puzzles according to the number of children are laid out randomly on the floor). As soon as the Dragon (leader) fell asleep, they run out of their holes and tease him, squeak and whistle. The dragon wakes up and catches the animals, then goes back to sleep. Children run away with delight, confuse holes, lose their whistles from laughter.

    • Clothespins

Everyone leaves the room, the leader attaches clothespins to all objects in the room: chandelier, chair, table, toys, dishes, carpet, doors, etc. When the guests return, they must collect all the clothespins. Whoever collected the most wins and becomes the leader.

    • Titanic

Pour water into a bowl, put a glass with a small amount of water in the middle to float. Guests must pour water into the glass so that it does not drown. Whoever drowns the glass-ship is out, and the game continues until one participant remains. He becomes the Captain, and the entire children’s company goes to eat icebergs – ice cream.

    • Mummy

At speed, wrap a person beautifully with toilet paper from head to toe. The jury chooses the winner. Get your cameras ready!

    • Treasure

This game requires good preparation, but it’s worth it. In advance, you can draw a map where the treasure is hidden, hide a note there, which indicates the location of the next treasure. And so along the chain, finding one note, the child looks for the next, and at the end gets to the real treasure – it can be sweets, cake, gifts, Lego.

    • Collect a picture

Taking a break from outdoor games and collecting pictures: prepare several pictures in advance, cut them into many curly pieces and give them to collect.

    • Pyramid

A calmer version of the game with plastic or cardboard disposable cups: children are invited to quickly build a pyramid of inverted cups. The lower floor – 5 pieces in one row, on top, in a checkerboard pattern 4, then 3, 2, 1. For older children, the game can be complicated – let them collect with their eyes closed.

    • Dancing pyramid.

We turn on cheerful music, the host builds a pyramid of cups, start with one row of glasses and build higher and higher with each new stage. Task: we dance to the music and jump over the pyramid in turn.

    • The sea worries once

For the sea we need fabric, 3-4 meters, preferably blue, like the sea. Two adults hold the fabric from opposite sides and create waves. Task 1: Adults lift the fabric up – children should have time to run, and adults, on the contrary, catch the kids. Task 2: put one child in the center of the fabric and cover. We play a mindfulness game. The gallant needs to quickly remember who was hidden. You can joke, hide dad or a big toy.

    • Mummy

Get your cameras ready – we’re going to make a mummy now! If there are a lot of guests, you can divide into several teams and compete in speed to make a mummy out of toilet paper. Prepare some rolls and plenty of camera memory.

    • Limbo

The Hawaiian Limbo is suitable for all ages. Two people hold a stick or pull a rope parallel to the floor at neck level, then 10-15 cm lower, even lower, and more. All participants in the holiday to cheerful music must go under the rope, bending in the back.

    • Fun lanes

Lay out lanes for a relay race on the floor using a clothesline (5-7 meters). Children go like a tightrope winding path to speed.

    • Soap bubbles

Who doesn’t like to play with soap bubbles? Turn on fun music, prepare a video and let the kids inflate the biggest bubble.

    • Darts

Both boys and girls will like it! There are safe children’s darts on magnets or with Velcro balls. Choose the most accurate guest – both boys and girls will like this game.

    • Ghost with a flashlight

If the children’s party takes place in the winter, when it gets dark early, turn off the lights in the room, and distribute flashlights to all children. We announce a competition for the funniest ghost. To do this, turn on the flashlight, highlight the bottom of the chin and make a face.

    • Psychic

Put a toy or sweets, cookies or crackers in the box in advance… Task: children need to imagine themselves as a psychic and try to guess what is in the box. Show how psychics can shaman, make movements with their hands, close their eyes, move their fingers. We give each player two or three attempts, whoever is closer to the answer wins.

    • Prizes on the rope

A great way to end the game. Small souvenirs are tied to the rope, the children are blindfolded and one by one they need to cut the prize from the rope.

    • Notes with wishes

Another beautiful end to any holiday. Write in advance on small pieces of paper wishes for the number of guests + 5 pieces in reserve, put them in a balloon and inflate it. At the end of the holiday, to the cheerful music, burst the balloon, make out the wishes and read them! If you are not afraid of additional cleaning, you can add confetti.

Finding the Right Baby Shoe Sizes

From day one, a baby’s feet are a delicate work in progress, with every small step foreshadowing how their feet, leg muscles, balance and stride will develop over the years ahead. Accordingly, when they must be worn at all, baby shoes should be chosen with tender, loving care.

Baby shoe sizes are not just smaller, identical versions of adult sizes. They’re a totally different category of shoe sizes specifically tailored for the feet of newborns, infants, and toddlers, based primarily on the child’s foot length in inches.

Unlike adult sizes, baby shoe sizes are identical for both girls and boys. Furthermore, baby shoe sizes are subcategorized into those for newborns (0-2 months), infants (2-12 months), and toddlers (1-3 years).

When they must wear footwear at all, newborns often wear socks and booties. Due to the varying size of newborns and their feet, age ranges may overlap, with a 1C fitting 0- to 2-month-olds while some 1- to 3-month-olds may require a 2C.

ᐅ How to Measure ᐅ International Sizes

Broad consensus among pediatricians and podiatrists encourages that newborns remain barefoot as much as possible for the unfettered development of bones and musculature. When cold temperatures or other environmental factors demand, however, such protective footwear as socks and booties are commonly worn by babies 0-2 months old. These are usually made from hypoallergenic, lightweight, and breathable materials such as cotton and wool. The newborn shoe size chart will help you pinpoint the best fitting shoe sizes for these ages.

    At a Glance

    • Allow for one-half to three-quarters of an inch of extra space between the shoes and your child’s feet. This provides enough wiggle room to avoid restricting proper growth. A poor fit could lead to serious problems later on.
    • After measuring both feet and the time has come to shop for shoes, make sure to use the longer foot measurement as the basis for the size. A little extra space in one shoe beats buying a pair that only fits one foot.
    • Since babies’ feet grow rapidly, be sure to measure their size often. During a baby’s first 24 months, it is recommended that the feet are measured every 2 months to ensure correct shoe size.
    • If buying shoes that you intend for your child to wear with socks, measure the feet while wearing those exact socks to determine the additional length and width needed for proper fit.
    • Before buying shoes online, identify the sizing standard used – is it US, UK, or European? – to make sure that the size conversion is correct.
    • US shoe sizes differ from European shoe sizes. Likewise, Euro sizes also differ from UK shoe sizing. To convert baby shoes for newborns from US to UK sizes, simply remember that UK shoes are usually one-half size smaller than US sizes. See all international Sizes

    FAQs

What size shoe does a 6-month-old wear?

On average, a 6-month-old baby wears 3C size shoes. However, we recommend you always measure your child’s feet as well as try the shoes on, since the foot size of individual babies may differ widely. And at this age, proper fit is all-important. See Chart.

    1

What size shoe does a 1-year-old wear?

On average, a 1-year-old (i. e., 12-month-old) baby wears 4C size shoes, assuming their longest foot measures 4 ¾”. However, we recommend measuring your child’s foot and looking up the correct shoe size here, as shoe size may differ based on an infant’s growth rate.

    1

What size shoe does a 2-year-old wear?

Depending on her or his foot measurement, a 2-year-old (i.e., 12-month-old) baby will wear 7C or 8C size shoes. If the baby’s longer foot measures a full 6”, the larger 8C size shoe should fit; if the feet are no longer than 5 ⅝”, the smaller 7C may be in order. As always, back up these approximations by measuring your child’s foot and ascertaining the correct shoe size here, then try that size on.

    1

What size shoe does a 12-month-old wear?

On average, a 12-month-old baby wears 4C size shoes. However, we recommend measuring your child’s foot and look up the correct shoe size here, as their shoe size may differ based on their development.

What are the best shoes for babies?

For newborns, no shoes are the best shoes, according to pediatricians and other health experts. Going barefoot permits unrestricted development of baby’s foot bones, leg muscles, sense of balance, and gait. When cold temperatures or other environmental factors require donning some sort of protective footwear, socks are more appropriate for keeping feet warm and cozy. Socks of naturally absorbent, hypoallergenic materials such as cotton or wool are recommended.

    Socks or shoes?

As previously mentioned, socks are preferred for extremely young babies such as newborns. Shoes will increasingly become an option, particularly when a child begins walking and to negotiate harsher terrain out of doors.  For babies who are learning to walk, soft-soled shoes made of lightweight, breathable material will protect the child’s feet from those rough surfaces without hampering development of strength and balance.

    Non-slip socks

Non-slip socks keep your child from slipping with soft rubber tread on the outer sole that provides better traction and grip on smooth surfaces. Even before babies take their first steps, socks with non-slip soles can help them propel themselves across the floor.

Should babies wear socks with shoes?

In general, wearing socks with shoes is recommended for everyone, and that includes the little ones. Wearing socks helps absorb moisture, reduce friction between feet and shoes, and prevent damage to the skin from constant rubbing or chafing. However, just like shoes, socks should fit properly to avoid such harmful effects as inhibiting the growth of the feet and restricting air and blood circulation.

Should babies wear shoes while crawling?

When your baby is just a newborn or in a later infant stage, wearing shoes is unnecessary. While they’re crawling, soft socks or, at most, socks with non-skid soles will work just fine. This will allow them to move more freely and not worry about supporting the weight of shoes. Also, no matter how good a fit they are, shoes (and even socks) will still fall off their tiny feet.

How long should babies wear soft-soled shoes?

Soft-soled shoes can be useful until the baby is about 24 months old. Beyond this, babies become more confident and adventurous walkers, venturing onto varying surfaces and terrain that may require shoes with firmer soles and sturdier materials.

Do babies have bones in their feet?

The 22 bones in a baby’s feet at birth are actually cartilage. Over time, these will ossify into the 28 bones of the adult foot. Complete mature development of the foot won’t occur until children reach their late teens.

Ingrown toenail in babies – causes and treatment

Did you know that over 65% of kids are wearing shoes that are too small for their feet? An ingrown toenail in a baby is a nail – usually the biggest toenail – that begins pressing into and even puncturing the adjacent skin and soft tissue. Onset of the condition shows up in early signs such as redness of the skin or swelling, and it can be excruciatingly painful for babies. This condition is commonly caused by nails growing too long and in the wrong direction. Wearing very tight shoes or socks could also cause an ingrown toenail by misdirecting growth of the nail into the toe.

To treat this condition, soak your baby’s foot or the affected toe in warm, soapy water two times a day and apply an antibiotic cream as recommended. When the affected toe is less swollen, try to edge the toenail out of its nail bed little by little so as not to hurt your baby. To prevent any future occurrence, cut the nails as often as needed to prevent them from growing too long and avoid tight footwear.

    How to Measure Kids Feet

Measuring your kid’s feet is pretty straightforward, and there are a few ways to do it. When in doubt, you can always get a second measurement from a professional in a children’s shoe shop. If you want to DIY it, here are three easy methods:

    1.

    Tracing

Tracing is the most common way to measure children’s feet at home — it’s easy, and not much equipment is required. Here’s what you need:

    • A blank paper.
    • A marker.
    • Ribbon.
    • Ruler.
    • One pair of bare feet.

    Remember Both Feet

If it’s the first time you’re sizing your child for kids shoes, always measure both feet. It’s not uncommon for one foot to be smaller than the other, so to ensure optimal comfort, measure both.

    Here’s what you do:

    • Trace the feet: Stand your child on a piece of paper on top of a clipboard or on a hard, non-carpeted floor. Try to get them to stand against a wall with their back straight. Use the marker and trace the outline of the feet — keep the marker at an upright angle for the best results.
    • Measure the length: Have your child step away from the paper. Measure the length from the heel to the tallest point on the big toe. Write the results down and mark them as length.
    • Measure the width: Grab the ribbon and wrap it around the broadest part of your child’s foot (the ball). Mark where the end of the ribbon touches. Measure the length from the end of the ribbon to the mark, and you’ve got the width.
    • Find the size: Once you’ve got your measurements, use your guide to find the appropriate size.

    2. Printable Guide

Most shoe brands and manufacturers include a size guide — many even provide you with a handy printable one. These are useful and can help you find the perfect fit. You can have a look at your favorite brand’s website — we love the one from StrideRite.

    Here’s what you’ll need:

    • A printable guide (this is the one we used).
    • Scissors.
    • Tape.
    • A wall.
    • Pencil.
    • Credit card.
    • Shoelace.
    • Your kid.

Here’s the breakdown on what you do:

    • Prepare the print: After you’ve printed the guide, use the scissors to cut along the dotted lines — cut the length and width rulers. Then grab the tape and fasten the length ruler to the floor — try to align the curved line with the wall. The idea is that the heel will be against the wall.
    • Measure the length: Place your kid’s foot on the length ruler, with the heel up against the wall, aligned with the curved line. Then use a marker to label the first line after the big toe — write the length in the space provided. Remember to use the correct column for the right or left foot.
    • Measure the width: While your child is standing up straight, use the width ruler, and slide it under the foot. Wrap it closely around the widest part and mark where the ruler meets the “align here” indicator. Take note of the results.
    • Try a shoelace: A shoelace also works to measure the width. Wrap it around the widest part, and then mark where the end touches the lace. Remove it, and measure the distance between the mark and the end that went around the foot.

    3. Use a Shoe Size Gauge

Using a size gauge is another simple method of measuring your kid’s shoe size. They’re available to buy online and at some shoe retailers.

    Here’s what you need:

    • Measuring device.
    • Paper.
    • Pencil.
    • Feet.

    And here’s what you do:

    • Stand up straight: Ask your child to stand up with their back straight, facing forward.
    • Place the foot: Have a look at your measuring device and locate where the heel should be. Then place the right heel in position.
    • Note the results: Write down the numbers facing you, and you should have the correct length.
    • Measure the width: Some shoe measuring devices have a bar that you slide over your child’s foot to measure the width. Consult the instructions. If not, you can use the ribbon or shoelace techniques mentioned in the two methods above.

How Often to Size Your Kid’s Feet

Tiny tootsies grow fast — between the ages two and six, their feet can grow up to half a size every two to four months. Experts recommend that up until four years, you make a shoe change every two to three months. To ensure the size is correct, look to measure their feet every two months (1).

After their fourth birthday, foot growth does slow down a bit, and they may not need a shoe change that often. Experts recommend every four to six months. However, continue sizing their feet at least every three to four months.

When Your Child Is Between Sizes

Not all feet are similar — sometimes two feet on the same child can grow differently. If your child is between sizes, it’s always recommended to go with the larger foot.

Having a shoe that’s a size too big is better. Using footwear that’s too small could lead to issues such as foot deformities or ingrown toenails (2).

    Shoe Buying Tips

    1. Shoe Shopping Tips for Babies

Before your baby begins to walk, you don’t need shoes. During this time, baby shoes such as booties, soft-soled, and socks are best. Once your little one starts to take their first steps, it’s time for a supportive shoe (3).

    Don’t Rush

Hard-soled shoes such as Mary Janes may look adorable, but they aren’t helping your little one walk. Shoes such as these may even delay walking. Being barefoot helps your baby build coordination and strength in their legs and feet.

    • Go for breathable and lightweight: For a new walker, comfort is crucial. Look for something made of cloth or soft faux leather.
    • Soft soles: When looking at the shoes, try to bend the soles. If they flex easily, they will provide good support for your new walker. If not, leave them on the shelf.
    • Shop in the afternoon: Baby feet tend to swell later in the day. So to ensure the shoe fits perfectly, do your shopping in the afternoon.
    • Verify the fit: Try to place your pinky finger in between your baby’s heel and the back of the shoe while they stand. If it feels tight, the shoe is probably too small.

    2. Shoe Shopping Tips for Toddlers

    • Bring socks: Unless you’re shopping for sandals, your tot will likely have to wear socks with shoes. Use the appropriate socks — thick for winter boots and light for summer sneakers. Then the shoe will fit right even when there’s extra padding.
    • Forget trends: Don’t give in to the latest trends of clogs, pointy boots, or high heels. These aren’t likely to provide any beneficial support to a toddler who’s still mastering their walk. Instead, go for something supportive.
    • Provide options: Some toddlers want to decide what they wear. If so, find a few different, but appropriate, shoes and ask your little one to choose which they like best.
    • Opt for Velcro: A hook and loop closure such as Velcro is much easier for a toddler to put on without assistance. This way, your child learns how to put on shoes, and you save time otherwise wasted tying shoelaces.

    3. Shoe Shopping Tips for Older Kids

    • Let them move: Once your child is wearing both shoes, let them do a strut around the shop. Watch how they walk and see if the shoe provides support, or looks uncomfortable. Then ask your child how they feel — be specific — ask if they feel tight or too loose.
    • Thumbs up: While your child is wearing the shoes, try to fit your thumb between the heel and the back of the shoe — you want it snug but not tight, so you avoid blisters. Then use your thumb to press at the front — feel for the big toe and how far forward it sits. There should be a thumb’s width between the toe and the end of the shoe.
    • Don’t think too big: If you’re on a budget, It can be tempting to buy a shoe that’s a few sizes too big. This isn’t ideal — at this age, your child is active and needs a supportive shoe that won’t come off unexpectedly.

    No More Toe Jam

Finding a correctly fitting shoe size for your child is essential. Footwear that’s too small can lead to long-term side effects, and too large will hinder them from walking or playing correctly. Using a kids’ shoe size chart is a great way to get an idea of which size to go for.

Measure your child’s feet regularly, depending on their age. It’s easy to do at home by tracing, using a printable guide, or purchasing a size gauge.

Children’s shoe sizes – children’s shoe sizes in cm – England (UK), USA (US)

Children grow very fast, and therefore their shoe size is constantly changing. Until the child reaches adolescence, his parameters will change every season. And if earlier the size of children’s shoes could be determined by age, now modern kids are developing much faster. Buying shoes for a baby intuitively is an extreme measure. It is best to do a few simple steps that will help you not to make a mistake when choosing a model for a child.

Each continent or country has its own system for determining the size of a child’s foot. The main characteristics by which they differ is the main unit of measurement and what is taken as the measurement base – the insole or the foot.

The sizes of children’s shoes are determined by three systems: metric, English and bar-mass (French).

    Metric system

The CIS countries (including Ukraine) use the metric system. The length of the foot in centimeters corresponds to the shoe number. You need to know that in this case the error for a thick toe and finishing seams is not taken into account.

    French sizing chart

French sizing chart based on insole length. The basic unit for calculations is the stroke, which corresponds to 2/3 of a centimeter. The insole of the model usually exceeds the length of the foot by 10-15 mm. This is called a decorative allowance, which is used during the manufacture of the product. Previously, each manufacturer independently determined the value of this indicator for itself. But after the approval of quality standards, the decorative allowance should not exceed 1 cm.

    English system

The English system uses an inch, which is equal to 2. 54 cm. Converting from centimeters is very simple: you need to divide your foot length by 2.54. The basis is a fixed size of the baby’s foot, the gap between the numbering is 1/3 inch. Size indicators go from 1 to 13, and then start again.

Italian fashionable houses are guided by a length of foot in Santimeters. But, compared to other European manufacturers, they often measure little. For example, if according to our size system a child has 30, then among Italian products it is worth taking 30. 5.

How to determine the size of children’s shoes?

The size of shoes for children of any age is determined by two parameters: length and width. The former is the size itself, while the latter is often also referred to as “fullness”. When choosing a product, do not forget about the characteristics of the material from which it is made: how well it stretches, is it easy to care for. Completeness is an important point if you are going to buy a child a model made of nubuck, suede, leather, dense textiles. When buying sports shoes, you don’t have to worry about fullness, they take the shape of the leg well.

In order to determine the length as accurately as possible, measurements are recommended to be taken in the afternoon, when blood rushes to the baby’s leg and it changes somewhat in size. We put the foot on a clean and even sheet of white paper, circle its outline. Having received the drawing, we measure on it the distance from the most protruding finger to the extreme point of the heel. The figure should be rounded up to a round number. For example, if you get 20.3 cm, then round up to 20.5. We do similar actions with the other leg of the child. Often, the indicators will differ from each other with an interval of 0.5 cm. Therefore, for the purchase of footwear products, take a larger number as a sample. Further, in the required dimensional grid, we find the correspondence of the sizes of children’s shoes and we can make a purchase. An important nuance: some shoe manufacturers are guided by their own size chart. Please check this before purchasing to avoid confusion. Here on the page, you will find a detailed table with the current dimensional grids of the world for children’s products. We wish you successful new things for your children!

Buying shoes for kids is an exciting and responsible process. It depends on her how the foot will be formed (if we are talking about very small ones) and how comfortable the child will be in shoes. Therefore, in this situation, the main thing is to choose the exact size for your child. First of all, parents need to know that there is a children’s shoe size scale . There are separate rooms for children and teenagers. In turn, booties, shoes for babies, preschoolers, and schoolchildren are distinguished.

When choosing boots, shoes or sandals for a child, , it should be borne in mind that the sizes of children’s shoes, to which we are already accustomed, do not coincide with European, American, English .

US size children’s shoes are measured in inches (2.54 cm). English system is very similar to the American one. The only difference is the smaller foot size of a newborn baby. If it is not possible to try on shoes (for example, when buying online), then you should pay attention to the fullness of children’s shoes . The bigger it is, the better.

The metric system (Ukraine also adheres to it) is based on the fact that the size is equal to the length of the foot.

As determine the size of children’s shoes? Naturally, this question haunts parents, especially young and inexperienced ones.

The smallest stout guys are measured with a leg or a centimeter, or a thread, which is then applied to it.

For older children, it is necessary to measure the leg only while standing, tracing the contour of the leg with a pen. To the results obtained must be added 0.5 cm for summer and 1 cm for winter shoes .

For convenience, we recommend using the size chart for children’s shoes .

The international activity of the Department of International Law is a natural component of all its activities. The department performs the main task of the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia – the training of elite personnel, including heads of state, for many countries of the world.

Until recently, all foreign students had to learn Russian in order to fully participate in the educational process. However, the department has opened a new master’s program “International Protection of Human Rights” and a postgraduate program in English, which allows to attract more students.

The department participates in the international program of the CIS Network University, within which students study simultaneously in two universities and receive two master’s degrees – from a Russian and a domestic university.

For the exchange of experience, teachers of the department give lectures in foreign universities, and foreign teachers come to the department of international law. This allows students to learn different points of view on the same issues of international law. Teachers of the department take part in conferences and advanced training programs organized by foreign universities.

Students and graduate students of the department participate in international exchanges, internships, study at foreign universities from several months to one year.

One of the most interesting activities of the department is the participation of student teams of the department in international competitions. Such participation provides invaluable experience in the practical application of international law.

The department conducts international conferences. One of the most significant conferences is the International Congress “Blishchenko Readings”, in which more than 700 people annually take part.

Various programs with international support are being implemented within the department. One of the prestigious programs is the Summer/Winter School on Human Rights, implemented with the support of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Russian Foreign Ministry.

The department is integrating into the international educational space, making its contribution in the form of the best traditions of Russian education.

    Indigenous Internship Program

Russian Internship Program (training is conducted in Russian):

The Russian-language internship program began as a pilot project in 2005. It was carried out in cooperation with the Association of Indigenous Minorities of the North, Siberia and the Far East of the Russian Federation (RAIPON) and the Center for Assistance to Indigenous Minorities of the North (CSCMNS/RITC). Since 2008, it has been held in cooperation with the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia.

The purpose of the internship program is to increase the knowledge of indigenous peoples about existing international human rights instruments and mechanisms in order to use them to better protect the rights of their communities and raise their concerns at the international level. Upon completion of the training, the trainees are also able to share the acquired knowledge with their communities and Indigenous organizations and conduct study sessions.

The program consists of two components. The first one takes place in Moscow at RUDN, lasts 3 weeks and is mostly theoretical training. It includes introductory lectures on international human rights instruments (conventions, declarations) and mechanisms (Human Rights Council, treaty bodies, special procedures) and also focuses on the special situation of indigenous peoples in the Russian Federation. In addition, the program includes a teaching visit to relevant government institutions. The second component takes place in Geneva and lasts 3 weeks. It complements and deepens the knowledge gained in Moscow in a more practical way: an overview of the UN system, the mandate and activities of the OHCHR, international human rights instruments and mechanisms, including those that relate directly to indigenous issues (UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, ILO Convention 169, Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues) is accompanied by hands-on activities and exercises to enhance learning. Interns also have the opportunity to actively participate in the annual session of the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. In addition, they become familiar with the work of other UN agencies (ILO, WIPO, UNESCO, UNICEF) and non-governmental organizations based in Geneva, including DoCip.

Participants of the Internship Program are provided with: round-trip ticket (economy class) from their place of residence to Moscow and from Moscow to Geneva; a daily or monthly stipend to cover basic expenses (including accommodation, meals and transport) in Moscow and Geneva; health insurance while studying in Geneva. OHCHR does not cover any other additional costs such as visa fees or travel insurance.

Representative of the Belarusian diaspora intends to restore the Slavic Museum in Baltimore

October 24, Minsk / Corr. BELTA/. The representative of the Belarusian diaspora in Washington, Alla Sandler, intends to restore the National Slavic Museum in Baltimore (USA). She told journalists about this after a meeting of Belarusians abroad, which was held at the National Library of Belarus, BelTA has learned.

Alla Sandler said that she is now reorganizing this museum. “I want to breathe new life into the Museum of Slavic Cultures, which was organized in Baltimore many years ago. Now, unfortunately, it is in a deplorable state, it needs repairs. Many exhibits are lost, have become unusable. I want to choose those exhibits that are still alive , sort, make a file cabinet. This is a complete reorganization of the museum. I am doing this on a volunteer basis,” she said.

Markevich – to Belarusians abroad: your word is worth a lot

She is glad that she came to Belarus for a creative internship, and she hopes to find people, professionals in museum business, who will help with experience in the reorganization of the museum. The representative of the Belarusian diaspora is sure that when things go more actively, other caring people will join in.

“The culture of different Slavic countries is presented in the museum. It is clear that Belarus is closer to me. But I would like each country to be able to present (its cultural heritage. – Approx. BelTA), and this will, of course, take more than one year”, she noted.

At this stage, Alla Sandler collects exhibits on her own. “Thoughts are material. I would like to bring a spinning wheel, other household items from the times of our grandmothers. Fortunately, I ended up in Minsk. And I managed to find some items,” the woman admitted. She hopes, thanks to the help of the Ministry of Culture, to take these objects to America in order to show them to a wide audience in the future. She also noted that she would gladly accept any such exhibits as a gift, and promises that they will be presented in this museum.

“I’m honored to be invited to this internship. I’m a singer, restaurateur, I don’t represent any public organization and came purely of my own free will. My goal is to meet people like me, gain experience, learn something new – said a representative of the Belarusian diaspora. – I left for America a long time ago, but I care about what is happening in Belarus.”

However, Alla Sandler is not the first time in Belarus. She admitted that she always willingly responds to any invitations. For example, I was at the “Slavianski Bazaar”, the International Festival “Wreath of Friendship”.

“Every time I arrive here, I feel at home. And everyone says so. Some go back to childhood, some go to youth. Even if the visit takes only two days, I definitely dedicate one day to my beloved city of Bobruisk .

    Chapter 8.

    Rearing Lake

    nine0003

At Grantham, a long silence followed the warning of anti-aircraft guns at Huls. Then Dunn’s phone rang sharply, and in the dead silence everyone heard the beeping of Morse code. It was slow enough that Cochrane, standing nearby, was able to read it.

“Goner,” he said. — From “G George.”

“Goner” was a code word that meant that Gibson had detonated his bomb at the intended location.

“I hope one bomb is enough,” Wallis said grimly.

    nine0003

“She’ll probably weaken the dam,” Cochrane consoled him. Harris looked like he was at a funeral. There were no more messages from “G George”, although they waited a long time. Prolonged silence. Nothing since Hopgood sat down. The phone rang. “Goner” from “R Popeye”. Another painful silence. Goner by A Apple. Wallis even today swears that there were half an hour between each message, but according to the magazine, only 5 minutes come out. “Goner” from “J Johnny”. It was Maltby. Something like a halo shone over Wallis.

    nine0003

A minute later the phone rang again, but now the Morse code crackled so fast no one could read it. Dunn printed it out letter by letter, and then yelled, unable to stand it:

    – “Nigga”! It’s “Nigga”. Its end! [126]

Wallis grabbed his head and danced around the room. Cochrane’s stern face showed the semblance of a smile. He grabbed Wallis by the arm and congratulated him. Harris chuckled for the first time since Wallis had met him. Harris shook his hand and said:

    nine0003

    – Wallis, I didn’t believe a word you said about that damned bomb, but now you can even sell me pink elephants.

A little later, when the excitement subsided a little, he added:

    – I must call the Portal immediately.

Sir Charles Portal, commander of the RAF, was in Washington that night and was having dinner with Roosevelt. Harris grabbed the nearest phone and demanded:

    – Give me the White House.

    nine0003

The shy little girl from the Women’s Auxiliary knew nothing about the top-secret raid. Even at Grantham, Cochrane maintained the utmost secrecy. She did not understand the importance of what was happening and did not recognize the great man who spoke. She was taken by surprise, she automatically answered:

    Yes, sir.

And without thinking, she gave me the only white house she knew, a pretty little roadside inn a few miles from Grantham.

    nine0003

Harris at first thought he had a miracle operator when the White House responded immediately. There were a couple of minutes of wild confusion and indescribable comedy as Harris demanded the Portal, and the sleepy landlord, who had been pulled out of bed in the middle of the night, carefully chose his words, explaining to him that no one named Portal was staying at this place. And in general, no one stopped here, since there are no places. And even if he had a room, he would not allow anyone who people are looking for at such a time of the morning to stay in it. Not for a day.

    nine0003

Harris turned purple. There was an exchange of harsh words until he hung up the phone. Someone went downstairs and talked to the telephone operator. Terrified, for an hour she tried to call Washington, but to no avail. [127]

Three kilometers down the Mön Valley lay the small, sleepy village of Himmelpforten, meaning “Gate to Heaven.” The explosion raised the village priest, Father Berkenkopf. He immediately guessed what had happened, because that was what he had feared for the last 3 years. He ran to his little stone church, Porta Coeli (which also meant Gate to Heaven, only in Latin) and began frantically ringing the bell to warn the villagers. It is not known how many of them received the warning in time. In the darkness, the ringing of a bell ominously flew over the valley, and then a muffled roar was heard, which was rapidly approaching. Berkenkopf should have heard him, and he knew what that meant. However, he continued to ring the bell as a wall of water hit the church and the village of Gate to Heaven and swept them away.

    nine0003

The water rushed many miles down the valley and swept away several more villages. Fragments of houses, beds, frying pans, a church bell, the corpses of cats and cows, pigs and dogs, the bodies of Father Berkenkopf and many other people flashed in a boiling whirlpool.

War, as someone remarked, is a great equalizer, but he did not mean such a literal and terrible end.

Eder Dam was much harder to find because of the thick fog that filled the valley. Gibson circled in place for a while until he was certain of where he was. One by one, the rest of the pilots discovered the dam. Soon they were all circling counterclockwise over the lake. There were no anti-aircraft guns. Perhaps the Germans thought that Eder did not need them. The dam lay deep in the folds of the hills. The ridges around it reached a height of 1000 feet, and there was simply no place for heavy aircraft to dive at night.

    nine0003

    Gibson said:

    — Okay, Dave, start attacking.

Shannon made a wide circle over the ridges and then lowered the nose of the plane. However, the dive wasn’t steep enough and he overshot. Sergeant Henderson [128] gave full throttle, and Shannon pulled the stick back. They almost crashed into a mountain on the opposite side of the valley.

“I’m sorry, leader,” Shannon said after a breath. – Never mind. I’ll try again.

    nine0003

Five times he dived into the dark valley, but each time he could not reach the bombing point. He almost caught the hillside with the tail of the Lancaster. Then Shannon radioed:

    – I think I’d better make another circle to get acquainted with the place.

    — OK, Dave. Turn around a little more, let someone else try. Hello, Z Zebra, now it’s your turn.

Maudsley confirmed the order and a minute later dived along the contour of the hills. However, he also overshot the reset point and was forced to jump up, as was Shannon. Maudsley tried again, but with the same result. He said he intended to try again. Maudsley passed slowly over the ridges, turning only at the last moment and dropping the plane’s nose sharply into darkness, forcing it into the valley. The rest of the pilots saw that he was rapidly descending, then the lights of the searchlights flashed on the surface of the water and quickly converged together. The spot of light rushed to the dam.

    nine0003

Red flare flashed as Fuller reported:

    – The bomb has been dropped!

However, they should have left as soon as possible. The bomb hit the parapet of the dam and exploded with a terrible flash at the moment of impact. In that flash, everyone saw the silhouette of “Z Zebra” for a moment. And then only darkness.

Gibson said tensely, knowing that all this was useless:

    – Henry, Henry, hello. “Z Zebra”, how are you?

    nine0003

No response. He made the call again, and just unbelievably, a completely calm voice said out of the darkness:

    – I think everything is fine . .. wait … [129]

Everyone heard it: Gibson, Shannon, Knight. They were amazed, how is this possible? After that, Gibson called Maudsley again, but there were no more answers. Maudsley did not return.

    Gibson said:

    OK, David. You attack.

Shannon made another run and missed again. He made another circle, dived into the darkness. This time everything went smoothly, the plane got out of the dive just above the water and rushed to the dam. He quickly found the right height and correctly dropped the bomb. Shannon abruptly threw the plane aside over a mountain spur. Beneath the parapet, the bomb spewed the familiar fountain of white foam. When he fell, Gibson, who dived to the water, saw that the dam was standing. Only Knight remained. He had the last bomb. Gibson ordered him to attack.

    nine0003

Knight made his first pass and, of course, missed. New entry. Again failure.

“Follow the moon path and dive to the limit, Les,” Shannon said. He gave some more advice over the radio, which Knight listened to carefully. He was a young Australian, a teetotaler, his main occupation in the evenings was writing letters home and painting. He dived again. Now everything worked out perfectly, he dropped the bomb just right. Everyone saw the splash. And in a second the lake reared up. Gibson bent down to get a better view, and saw … A wall of water rushed out of the hole in the dam and rushed along the valley in an all-destroying stream.

    nine0003

Knight was indescribably delighted, he let out a wild scream, which the radio obediently conveyed to the others, and only then guessed to turn off the transmitter. The crew’s remarks also went on the air, and they were extremely expressive.

It was even more fantastic than in Myung. The gap in the dam was huge, and more than 200 million tons of water poured through it. The Eder Valley was steeper, and the pilots watched silently as the churning billows writhed through the valley like a snake. His speed was at least 30 ft/sec. They saw the car trying to get away [130] from the water. Only the headlights were visible, frightened twitching in the darkness. But the car lost the race. The foam overtook him, the headlights flickered green for a moment and then went out.

    nine0003

Hutchinson sent “Dingy” in Morse code. It was a code signal that the Eder dam had been destroyed. When he had finished, Gibson said:

    – OK. All aircraft cancel. Love it and that’s enough. Moved home.

The sound of their engines slowly faded between the hills as they flew back.

McCarthy flew to the Zorpe Dam alone, weaving through the hills south of Myung. The valleys were full of fog, so it took a long time before he was able to decide on a place. The lake gleamed dimly through the haze, and he recognized its outline from the training model.

    nine0003

He made a trial run and, like the others over Eder, found he needed to dive harder. Then he found an aiming point and hurried a little. McCarthy made 2 runs but was not satisfied. On his third pass, he broke through a curtain of mist to keep out the misleading moonlight. He nearly crashed into the water and leveled the plane at the last moment. Jackson found his aiming point, seconds ticked by.

    – The bomb has been dropped!

The plane had already jumped over the wall of hills when it exploded against the dam wall. McCarthy swooped down again, and everyone saw a gap 50 yards wide. After they set a course for England, Eton rapped on the radio that the bombing had been successful.

Wallis’s joy was complete. Cochrane radioed “G” to George, asking if he had any aircraft left to retarget them at Zorpa. Hutchinson replied that there were none. Sutterley, who was in charge of the reserve group, relayed the order to them by radio.

Burpee on “S Sugar” was diverted to Zorpa, but did not respond. He did not respond to repeated calls. By this time he was already dead. [131]

Brown on the F Firefly was sent to Zorpa and arrived there after McCarthy had left. The fog got even thicker. Although he swooped down to the dam itself, his bombardier Oancia did not have time to aim.

    nine0003

Brown dived a second time, but the second time the fog prevented Oancia. They made 8 attempts, after which Brown stopped this activity for a while and decided to have a small meeting on the intercom. The next time Oancia dropped a pack of lighters on the trees next to the dam. They flared brightly, the trees also caught fire, so during the tenth run, Oansia saw this glow from afar. Now he knew exactly where the target was, and accurately dropped his bomb.

They began to climb with a turn, and a column of water and mud flew out of the fog. Then it fell off, and the pilots saw an air shock wave that looked like a giant ring of smoke around this pillar.

    nine0003

Anderson, on the Y Yorker, was also sent to Zorpa, but he arrived even later than Brown. Now the valley was completely hidden by fog, so it was simply impossible to see the lake and the dam. He came back with the bomb.

Ottley’s With Charlie was ordered to fly to Lister Dam, one of the secondary targets. He acknowledged receiving the order, but no one else heard from him.

Last pilot was Townsend on O Orange. His target was the Ennerpe dam. He searched for her for a long time in the fog and made 3 calls before he was satisfied and dropped the bomb. The attack was successful.

    nine0003

10 planes out of 19 were returning home. Now they were lighter by 8 tons due to dropped bombs and burned gasoline and could reach a maximum cruising speed of 245 miles / hour. It was possible not to care about fuel consumption, the only task was to fly home. The shore was an hour’s flight away, but it was less before sunrise. The pilots knew that enemy fighter pilots were anxiously waiting for the sky to turn pink in the east. [132]

Harris brought Cochrane and Wallis to Scampton to meet the survivors. Back in the operations center, he picked up the phone again to call the Portal. This time he immediately alerted the telephone operator that Air Chief Marshal Sir Arthur Harris, Chief of Bomber Command, would be speaking.

    nine0003

“Yes, of course,” agreed the patient girl, who knew what jokes young lieutenants allow themselves. It’s you again, sir. Now go and let your navigator put you to bed. He will help you take the right course.

There was an explosion in the operations center. An unusually polite communications officer flew down the stairs and explained to the girl what a terrible thing she had done. Someone calmed the furious people in the operations center while the girl dialed to Washington. This time the line was free, and Harris, somewhat reassured, had the pleasure of telling the Portal:

    nine0003

    – Operation Downwood was a success… yes, a success!

Gibson saw Hamm’s black spot ahead and turned east. On the left, he saw another plane. Gibson thought he was flying too close to Hamm. and immediately flashes of anti-aircraft guns flashed, and something exploded in the sky, where the plane had just been. It fell, spewing flames like a meteor. Perhaps it was Burpee. Or Ottley.

Townsend was the last to leave the dam area. He flew over Myung and did not recognize him at first. The lake has changed shape. Everywhere one could see mudflats on which fishing boats were stuck, bridges absurdly sticking out, as if on stilts, over a dried-up river. The anti-torpedo net was gone, and the terrain below the dam was completely changed. A new lake appeared, which did not exist before. A strange lake rushing down the valley.

    nine0003

By some miracle, most of the planes got away from the anti-aircraft guns on the way back. But any luck ends one day, the sky in the east brightened, and now the heavy bombers looked more like sitting ducks. Trevor-Ruper told Gibson over the intercom: [133]

    – Unidentified aircraft behind.

    – Ok, Trav.

“G George” went down rapidly until he began to literally scrape his belly over the fences in the pastures, and the frightened sheep began to scatter in panic.

    nine0003

“I can’t see anymore,” Trevor-Ruper said, but Gibson kept crawling on the ground just in case.

Over Holland he called Dingy Young, but did not hear an answer. Gibson began to wonder what had happened to Dingy. (The group headquarters knew! They received a short message from Young. He passed the coast at low altitude and the last salvo of anti-aircraft guns hit the plane. Young managed to stretch a few more miles, losing altitude, but then he landed on the water.)

Approaching the West Wall, Gibson climbed to 300 feet. Pulford pushed the gas sectors forward and dived towards the ground again. They picked up speed of 270 miles an hour and raced over the tank traps and the sandy shore. Soon there was a gloomy gray sea below them, and the anti-aircraft guns were left behind.

    nine0003

After 10 minutes dawn broke over Holland, but Townsend still hadn’t left the mainland. He was lucky, and he slipped between the guns.

Maltby arrived first. He landed at dawn and found that the whole airfield was waiting for him, despite the twilight. Harris, Cochrane and Wallis met him. Maltby told what he saw. Sell Martin. Matt Sanders rushed out to meet him and found Martin under the plane’s wing, looking distressed at the jagged hole in the wing.

    nine0003

“Hello, Matt,” he said. “Look what those bastards did to Popeye.”

One by one the planes landed and the pilots went to the operations center, where Harris, Cochrane and Wallis listened carefully. Gibson entered. His hair, which had been under the helmet for 8 hours, finally settled down.

“That was crazy, sir,” he said. – They flew like bombs, but could not get past [134] anti-aircraft guns. I’m afraid some guys got it. I don’t know exactly how many were hurt. Probably Hopgood and Maudsley.

    nine0003

They ate ham and eggs and crowded around the beer bar, waiting for stragglers. Shannon and Dingy Yang sat on the water, and someone said:

    — Hasn’t the old drunkard spanked back yet? He is doing this for the third time. And will do it too often.

Young had to do it TOO often. This time he was not in the lifeboat.

    Wallis asked anxiously:

    — Where are they? Where are the others? Summers replied:

    nine0003

    — They’ll get together, just give it time. Perhaps they sat in other places.

However, the wait soon became pointless, and Wallis realized that everyone around him was drinking to those who did not return. Excluding himself. He didn’t drink. Martin made him take half a pint, but he just stood there, trying to blink away tears. Then Wallis squeezed out:

    – Oh, if only I knew. I would never start this!

Mutt and Charles Whitworth tried to make him forget about it as soon as possible.

    nine0003

The crowd was slowly dissolving. Someone said, “Why are we having a bachelor party here?”

Immediately, an Australian and three other people broke into the room where the women lived. One of the girls sat on the bed and undressed.

    – You can’t come in here! she screeched.

    — Yes, I can, — answered one of the pilots. He grabbed a couple of tennis balls off the dressing table and stuffed them under his uniform. Then he examined the new bust with approval and said: “All the girls are here.” Come out and join the party.

    nine0003

The girl said she had never been to a party before breakfast. Then they grabbed the bed and started tossing her up to the ceiling until she begged for mercy. “Well, well, well, let me just get dressed. [135]

Gibson quickly left the party, but did not go to bed. He went to the hangar to give Humphrey and Chifi Powell the list of victims. They were supposed to notify their relatives by telegrams. 56 beardless youths out of 133 who went on the flight were gone. Only three managed to jump out with parachutes at a dangerously low altitude and spent the rest of the war in the unpleasant environment of prisoner of war camps. Gibson expected heavy losses over Myon, where the scouts found some defensive structures, but only 1 aircraft was shot down there. (It wasn’t until after the war that the mysterious black shadows on the hillsides were discovered to be nothing more than ornamental pines. At the height of the war, the Germans were unable to send additional guns, but tried to at least portray them.)

    nine0003

The carriages went to Whitworth’s house for lunch. Wallis wearily descended the stairs, shaken by his losses, and after a while he flew off to Weybridge with Summers. Martin gave him sleeping pills when he left so that he could sleep at night. He fell asleep. The tired scientist dropped a pill somewhere in the bed and turned off like a light bulb.

Around 2 pm even the hardy Martin and Whittaker decided to go to sleep, but at 5 pm they were up and took the bus to Woodhall Spa for the party. On the way back, David Shannon and Anna sat side by side. Shannon leaned right in to the girl’s ear so that the others would not hear, and asked her to marry him.

    nine0003

“Oh David…” she muttered, “… not with that mustache.

Shannon involuntarily grabbed them. It was the most precious thing for him, they made him quite an adult – he looked at least 22 years old. He cleared his throat.

Is this serious? My mustache or you?

    The answer was silence.

    – All right, I’ll shave them off.

In the morning, 617 Squadron went on leave – 3 days for ground personnel and 7 days for surviving pilots. Gibson remained, who for 2 days wrote letters to the mothers [136] of the dead. He refused Heveron, who wanted to print the standard form of the notice, and wrote to everyone in his own hand, each time in a new way. 56 letters.

    nine0003

In London and at home, the pilots found themselves famous. The reconnaissance “Mosquito” returned from a flight over Germany with pictures, and they were breathtaking. Lakes Mön and Eder were empty. 330 million tons of water, like a cancerous tumor, spread through the valleys of the western Ruhr, only the skeletons of cities and villages were visible among the wastelands.

The Ruhr, which used to be tested by fire, is now under water. At 50 miles from Myon and 50 miles from Eder, coal mines were flooded, factories were destroyed. Fritzlar, one of Hitler’s largest military airfields, was under water. Planes, airfields, hangars, barracks, bomb storage – everything is gone. Highways, railroads, bridges disappeared. The industrial suburb of Kassel Unterneustadt, located 40 miles from Eder, went under water. The current rushed a few more miles through the Fulda valley. The banks of the canals were washed out, the power plants were demolished, the Ruhr blast furnaces were without water and could not produce steel. Dozens of river structures were destroyed in Gelsenkirchen, Dortmund, Hamm and Bochum. The transport system that ensured the flow of raw materials to the Ruhr and the export of finished products was destroyed. Some factories were not demolished, but could not work because they lost electricity or water.

    nine0003

In the small town of Neheim, 2,000 people were involved in repairs, including 1,250 soldiers. Another 2,000 people tried to repair the dam. But even many months later, during the battle for the Ruhr, there was not enough water even to extinguish fires.

The official German report gives a “gloomy picture of devastation.” By autumn, it will be clear how much production has suffered, but according to an estimate, this was equal to the loss of 100,000 workers for several months.

125 plants and factories were either destroyed or badly damaged. Approximately 3000 hectares of arable land were [137] devastated. 25 bridges destroyed, 21 bridges damaged. 6500 heads of cattle died.

    nine0003

Such were the costs. But there were also losses. 1294 people drowned, mostly civilians. However, they were mostly prisoners and slaves – 749 people. In the Eder Valley there was a camp of Russian prisoners of war.

After the raid, the Germans brought in hundreds of soldiers with anti-aircraft guns to guard the rest of the dams in Germany. In the meantime, they worked like beavers to repair Myung. They built 2 high pylons 2,000 yards from the dam and strung a cable between them across the lake. Other cables with suspended grenades hung from it all the way to the water. It was a trap for low-flying aircraft. Near the dam itself, they stretched 2 strong anti-torpedo nets, another was installed 1000 yards from the dam. On the dry side of the dam they stretched out a steel net.

    nine0003

Mayor Dillhardt was avenged, but too late. The stable door was slammed when the horse was already gone.

Gibson calmly passed the dismissal with his wife Eva. She was shocked when photos of her Guy appeared on the front pages of the newspapers. All the time he served in 617 Squadron, he assured her that he worked in a flying school.

Mickey Martin was invited to the Australian Air Force headquarters. There, a swarthy, pretty girl named Wendy used all her charms to get him to talk about the raid and relay it to Australia. However, the indestructible Martin only said:

    nine0003

    – Let’s have lunch together.

He remained silent until she agreed.

In Scampton, Gibson received a letter from the village vicar. Opening the envelope, he found a copy of the letter he had sent to The Times.

    “Sir,

The bombing of the Myona Dam caused serious concern in the international bird conservation movement. For 3 years since the beginning of the war, a pair of whooper swans [138] ringed by us nested on this lake. These are the rarest of the large birds in Europe. There is only one other known pair of this arctic subspecies. She was photographed at 1927 Professor Olssen’s aunt, Reykjavik, at their nesting site on Lake Thongvallavatn, Iceland.

Has anyone heard anything about the fate of the Möna couple, possibly the last couple in Europe? Given the rarity of these beautiful birds, how could they have allowed their nesting site to be bombarded? Moreover, if the operation was already necessary, could it not be postponed until the swans (if any) grow up?

    Sincerely yours. ..»

The Times realized that it smelled bad and did not publish the letter, which was quite reasonable. After all, Gibson later learned that it was written by 2 intelligence officers from Scampton.

Mickey Martin also received a letter. One Australian wrote that he collects souvenirs for a military museum and asks to send something from the raid on the dam. Martin was completely irreverent when it came to the rear. He replied:

    “Sir,

I am extremely interested in your museum and I am sending you the Möna dam in an envelope

    nine0003

    Sincerely yours…”

Below the signature, he had Toby Foxley write in red ink: “Censored and confiscated by the Metropolitan Water Board.”

After that came awards – 33 pieces. Gibson received the Victoria Cross, Martin, McCarthy, Maltby, Shannon and Knight – Distinguished Service Crosses. Bob Hay, Hutchinson, Leggo, Danny Walker received buckles for their Distinguished Flying Crosses. 10 people received Distinguished Flying Crosses, including Trevor-Ruper, Buckley, Deering, Spafford, Tarum. Brown and Townsend received [139] Distinguished Gallantry Medal, 12 others were awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal, including Tammy Simpson, Sumpter, Oansia and Palford.

Upon hearing the news, Gibson called Sergeant Powell.

“Chifi,” he said calmly, “if I change, tell me right away.

On May 27, the King and Queen visited the famous new squadron. Crews in dress uniform were lined up in front of the aircraft. On this day, Shannon turned 21, about which Gibson warned the king. Therefore, when Shannon was introduced to the monarch, he shook hands with the pilot and cheerfully said:

    nine0003

    – You’re perfectly preserved for your age, Shannon. You just have to go to the party.

Gibson held a competition for the best squadron emblem and presented several designs to the king to choose from. The king called the queen, and they, without saying a word, chose a drawing of a broken dam. Water gushes from the hole, and lightning flashes in the sky. Below the picture was the motto: “Apres nous les deluge”. It sounded ambiguous – “After us, even a flood.” Especially if you remember that Queen Marie Antoinette said it.

    nine0003

The night the royal couple left, Shannon had a party. Near the end, an unexpected vision appeared in the room. Charles Whitworth dressed up in a hunting harness, red jacket and white breeches and announced himself with loud blasts of a horn. He blew until someone from below yelled, “What the hell?! What’s going on there?!” – the door opened and a certain senior officer appeared in a uniform embroidered with galloons, with golden oak leaves on his cap and an order block on his chest. Frightened exclamations were heard, but when not quite sober eyes saw the newcomer, a cat chorus thundered.

    nine0003

    – Shannon!

Shannon ran away unnoticed and stole Whitworth’s uniform and cap. He entered, took the pipe from Whitworth, and muttered:

    — Who are these unfortunates in fancy dress?

Whitworth put strawberries in his hunting horn.

My Son attended this place for after school for a short bit. The sch is nice and the staff is relatively friendly. There was this one staff member named Ms. Elbers. Very unprofessional. Not an asset to the school at all, definitely a liability.

“Kids sleep and walk around the garden in shoes.” How kindergarten works in the USA

Muscovite Anna Naumova with her husband Anton and two-year-old daughter Eva moved from Russia to the USA a little over a month ago. They settled in Jersey City. In Russia, Eva has already changed two kindergartens, Anna decided that in America the child should be sent to a kindergarten. The girl talked to the Deti.Mail.ru portal about how the organization of kindergartens in the USA and Russia differs.

Children are admitted to kindergartens from a month old, because maternity leave in the states is short, you have to go to work almost immediately. When a child turns four, he is already moving to preschool centers: he is preparing to start education. There is no clear division into groups in the kindergarten, the children are assigned to the teacher: six people per nanny.

In Jersey City, parents live in an African-American area, there are no Russians there, and there are no Russian kindergartens in the district as unnecessary. Although in the USA they are “with borscht and porridge, Russian nannies and Russian fairy tales.” On the tenth attempt, a kindergarten was found, in which there were still places. “The garden itself is cute, spacious, there are a lot of toys, the same children’s tables as we have. Only all the children are African Americans,” says Anna.

    Photo: Anna Naumova’s Instagram

The hardest thing was dealing with paperwork, Anna recalls. In Russia, everything is limited to “one contract, a vaccination card and a certificate from a doctor,” but in the USA it is so easy to sue educators that they prefer to prescribe every dubious clause in the contract. “From the interesting: permission to walk, permission to photograph for non-commercial needs and a questionnaire for food, for example, what fat content of milk the child drinks,” my mother recalls.

All kindergartens in the United States are paid, the average cost is about $1,000 per month. Anna pays $600 because her neighborhood is “more like a ghetto”. They ask you to bring pencils of a certain brand, glue, a sheet and a blanket with you to the garden. Children sleep on folding beds, which are placed right in the middle of the playrooms during quiet hours.

“It is interesting that babies sleep and walk around the garden in shoes. This is a federal law in all states related to safety: in case of a hurricane or earthquake, so as not to waste time on shoes.0003

The kindergarten is open from 7 am to 5 pm, “which is basically inconvenient if parents are working.” As in Russia, they feed in the garden three times a day, but almost all the food is fat-free. Due to the increased allergenicity of children, meat is rarely given. The menu is compiled a month in advance and is almost always the same. “Food has become a stumbling block in our desire to go to kindergarten. For the first few days, my daughter constantly cried in the morning in front of the kindergarten, and in the evening, right in the garden, she ate everything that we brought her. This was not the case in Moscow. In the morning we took her, hungry, to the kindergarten at about 7-8 in the morning, and in the evening we picked her up at 7 pm, and it was even possible not to feed, ”recalls Anna

    Photo: Anna Naumova’s facebook

There was also a language problem: Eva does not speak or understand English at all. But the nannies told my mother not to worry, “they mentioned that there was a French family, the child also did not speak English, but after a month or two he got used to it.” Eva also quickly got used to it: she never learned to speak, but she began to understand much better.

The breakfast was amazing and they opened up early for our 10U softball team since we had to be at the fields extremely early for games and were extremely accommodating with having a hot breakfast to make sure our softball girls were taken care of. Thank you so much!!
The lobby area was extremely inviting and a great gathering point for our team.
