The pyramids of ancient Egypt were funerary edifices. They were built over a period of 2,700 years, ranging from the beginning of the Old Kingdom to the close of the Ptolemaic period. But the time at which pyramid building reached its acme, the pyramid age par excellence, was that commencing with the 3rd dynasty and ending at roughly the 6th (c. 2686–2325 bce). During those years the pyramid was the usual type of royal tomb. It was not, as such, an isolated structure but was always part of an architectural complex. The essential components, at least during the Old Kingdom, were the pyramid itself, containing or surmounting the grave proper and standing within an enclosure on high desert ground; an adjacent mortuary temple; and a causeway leading down to a pavilion (usually called the valley temple), situated at the edge of the cultivation and probably connected with the Nile by a canal. Scores of royal pyramids have been found in Egypt, but many of them were reduced to mere mounds of debris and long ago plundered of their treasures.

The prototype of the pyramid was the mastaba, a form of tomb known in Egypt from the beginning of the dynastic era. It was characterized by a flat-topped rectangular superstructure of mud brick or stone with a shaft descending to the burial chamber far below it. Djoser, the second king of the 3rd dynasty, employing Imhotep as architect, undertook for the first time the construction of a mastaba entirely of stone; it was 8 metres (26 feet) high and had a square ground plan with sides of about 63 metres (207 feet) each. Once completed it was extended on the ground on all four sides, and its height was increased by building rectangular additions of diminishing size superimposed upon its top. Thus Djoser’s original mastaba became a terraced structure rising in six unequal stages to a height of 60 metres (197 feet), its base measuring 120 metres (394 feet) by 108 metres (354 feet). This monument, which lies at Ṣaqqārah, is known as the Step Pyramid; it is probably the earliest stone building of importance erected in Egypt. The substructure has an intricate system of underground corridors and rooms, its main feature being a central shaft 25 metres (82 feet) deep and 8 metres (26 feet) wide, at the bottom of which is the sepulchral chamber built of granite from Aswān. The Step Pyramid rises within a vast walled court 544 metres (1,785 feet) long and 277 metres (909 feet) wide, in which are the remnants of several other stone edifices built to supply the wants of the king in the hereafter.

A structure of peculiar shape called the Bent, Blunted, False, or Rhomboidal Pyramid, which stands at Dahshūr a short distance south of Ṣaqqārah, marks an advance in development toward the strictly pyramidal tomb. Built by Snefru, of the 4th dynasty, it is 188 square metres (2,024 square feet) at the base and approximately 98 metres (322 feet) high. Peculiar in that it has a double slope, it changes inclination about halfway up, the lower portion being steeper than the upper. It comes nearer than Djoser’s terraced tomb to being a true pyramid. A monumental structure at Maydūm, also ascribed to Snefru, was a true pyramid, though not originally planned as such. The initial structure was gradually enlarged until it became a gigantic eight-terraced mass of masonry; then the steps were filled in with a packing of stone to form a continuous slope. The entire structure was eventually covered with a smooth facing of limestone; a geometrically true pyramid was the final result. In its ruined condition, however, it has the appearance of a three-stepped pyramid rising to a height of about 70 metres (230 feet). The earliest tomb known to have been designed and executed throughout as a true pyramid is the Red Pyramid at Dahshūr, thought by some to have also been erected by Snefru. It is about 220 metres (722 feet) wide at the base and 104 metres (341 feet) high. The greatest of the Egyptian pyramids are those of the pharaohs Khufu, Khafre, and Menkure at Giza (see Pyramids of Giza).

Among American pyramids the best known include the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon at Teotihuacán in central Mexico, the Castillo at Chichén Itzá, and various Inca and Chimú structures in Andean settlements. American pyramids were generally built of earth and then faced with stone, and they are typically of stepped form and topped by a platform or temple structure. The Pyramid of the Sun, with base dimensions of 220 by 230 metres (722 by 755 feet), rivals in size the Great Pyramid of Khufu at Giza, which measures 230 square metres (2,476 square feet).

Pyramid – World History Encyclopedia

A pyramid is a structure or monument, usually with a quadrilateral base, which rises to a triangular point. In the popular imagination, pyramids are the three lonely structures on the Giza plateau at the edge of the Sahara Desert but there are over seventy pyramids in Egypt stretching down the Nile River Valley and, in their time, they were the centers of great temple complexes. Although largely associated exclusively with Egypt, the pyramid shape was first used in ancient Mesopotamia in the mud-brick structures known as ziggurats, and continued to be used by the Greeks and Romans. Pyramids are also found south of Egypt in the Nubian kingdom of Meroe, in the cities of the Maya throughout Central and South America, and, in a variation on the form, in China.

Egyptian Pyramids

Known as ‘mr’ or ‘mir’ by the Egyptians, the pyramid was a royal tomb and considered the place of ascent for the spirit of the deceased pharaoh. From the top point of the pyramid, it was thought, the soul would travel to the after-life of the Field of Reeds and, if it so chose, could easily return to earth (the high pinnacle of the pyramid, or a life-like statue of the king, serving as a beacon the soul would recognize). Early on, the simple mastaba served as a tomb for the common people and royalty alike but in the Early Dynastic Period (c. 3150-2613 BCE) the pyramid design was developed under the reign of Djoser of the Third Dynasty (c. 2670-2613 BCE).

Djoser’s chief architect Imhotep (c. 2667-2600 BCE) decided to try something which had never been attempted before: to build a colossal monument entirely of stone. Instead of the simple mastaba tomb, he designed and engineered a process whereby the earlier mud-brick mastabas would be built of limestone block and would be placed on top of one another, each level a little smaller than the one beneath, to create a pyramid. This series of large, stone, stacked mastabas, carefully built in a graduated design, became the first pyramid in Egypt – the famous Step Pyramid at Saqqara. Djoser’s pyramid rose 204 feet (62 meters( high and was composed of six separate ‘steps’. The base of this pyramid was 358 by 411 feet (109 by 125 meters) and the ‘steps’, or layers, were faced with limestone. The pyramid was built in the center of a grand complex of temples, houses for the priests, and administrative buildings which covered 40 acres (16 hectares) and was encircled by a wall 30 feet (10.5 meters) high. In designing this pyramid and complex, Imhotep created the tallest structure in the world at that time which instantly became Saqqara’s leading tourist attraction.

The first pyramid, as we would recognize the structure today, appeared in the 4th Dynasty in the reign of Snofru who completed two pyramids at Dashur.

The first pyramid, as we would recognize the structure today, appeared in the Fourth Dynasty in the reign of Snofru who completed two pyramids at Dashur as well as finishing the work begun on his father’s pyramid at Meidum. These pyramids also made use of the gradation of stone blocks of limestone but the blocks were cut smaller as the structure rose, providing a smooth outer surface instead of the ‘steps’ which was then covered in limestone. The most outstanding example of pyramid building in Egypt was the Great Pyramid of Khufu at Giza, the last remaining of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, with a base covering thirteen acres and composed of 2,300,000 stone blocks. Known as the Horizon of Khufu in ancient times, the pyramid was positioned for precise astrological alignment.

Mesoamerican Pyramids

The pyramids of Mesoamerica follow this precise design even though there is no evidence of cultural exchange between Egypt and cities such as Chichen Itza or Tikal or the great city of Tenochtitlan. The great pyramids of the Mayan civilization, and other indigenous tribes of the region, are thought to represent mountains which symbolized man’s attempt to reach closer to the realm of the gods. The pyramid known as El Castillo, at Chichen Itza, was specifically designed to welcome the great god Kukulkan back to earth at the spring and autumn equinoxes. On those dates, the sun casts a shadow which, owing to the construction of the pyramid, appears to be the serprent god descending down the stairs of the pyramid to the ground.

Other Pyramids

Evidence of pyramid-building in Greece exists in archaeological excavations at Hellenicon and in the works of the ancient writer Pausanius who recorded seeing two pyramids in Greece. The Grecian pyramids function remains mysterious in that the ruins at Hellenicon are not as well preserved as the pyramids of Egypt and there exist no records by the Greeks mentioning pyramid-building.

Pausanius’ accounts seem to indicate the pyramids were monuments to fallen heroes and, perhaps, some were; but the fact that the ruins at Hellenicon have a door in the base which can only be locked from the inside has led some scholars to speculate that perhaps pyramids were used as watchtowers (rising in pyramid shape but without the pinnacle). As the top of the pyramid at Hellenicon is long missing, however, and as there are no accounts of it from antiquity, this must remain speculation.

Meroe Pyramids Reconstruction

Fabrizio Demartis (CC BY-SA)

In Roman times the pyramid returned to the Egyptian use as a tomb and the Pyramid of Cestius still stands today in Rome near the Porta San Paulo. Built between 18 and 12 BCE, the pyramid was the tomb of the magistrate Gaius Cestius Epulo and rises 125 feet from a base of 100 feet. There is some disagreement over whether the Romans took the pyramid shape from Egypt or from Nubia, as the shape and interior design of Cestius’ pyramid could be interpreted as either but not definitively as one or the other. The pyramids of the Kingdom of Meroe (south of Egypt in modern-day Sudan) are identical to those of Egypt though seem to be lacking the intricacy of interior chambers.

Conclusion

In every culture which made use of them (and, of course, as mentioned, there were pyramids also in China, throughout Mesoamerica, in India and, later, throughout Europe) the pyramid was the centerpiece of a surrounding complex. Today the Great Pyramid at Giza sits between the two smaller pyramids and other recently excavated Mastabas but, originally, would have risen above terraces and walks and buildings dedicated to the spirit of the deceased or to the gods of that particular place. Worker’s villages once rose on the plateau of Giza which gave rise to shops and and trade centers. These workers were not foreign slaves but Egyptians who were either recruited for labor as a religious sacrifice, volunteered as community service, or were paid for their time and talents. Archaeological excavations have found no evidence of forced labor on the pyramids at Giza nor on any of the other monuments of Egypt. The popular impression of Hebrew slaves toiling under the lash to build the pyramids comes from the biblical Book of Exodus and nowhere else save fictions and films which have popularized the story. The Giza plateau was no slave quarter where people were forced to work against their will but a thriving community of Egyptians who lived, worked, and worshipped there. The positioning of the Sphinx at Giza, as well as recent archaeological finds there and elsewhere in Egypt, support the theory of Pyramid Complexes as centers of worship, work, commerce, and social life rather than lone tombs erected on empty plains.

Benefits of Summer Camp:

On the surface, summer day camp is a fun getaway for kids to help fill the time during summer break. But on a deeper level, it’s so much more. Summer camp is a supportive, creative, nurturing environment where kids will grow physically and emotionally, improving self-esteem. Kids also make new friends. Almost every camper says that camp helped them make friends and camp helped them get to know kids who were different from themselves. Campers bond through fun activities and challenges, helping them make memories that will last a lifetime.

At Y Day Camp, kids will learn new skills by being exposed to new situations and engaging curriculum. With new challenges, comes less screen time! Many parents struggle in the summer with getting their children off of computers and outside to play. Y camps are the perfect solution to this problem. Too much screen time can lead to boredom, sleep issues, eyesight difficulties and a sedentary summer – not at the Y! We’ll have your kiddo up, moving and grooving each and every day.

“My child has been going to YMCA Summer Day Camp since she was 6 and loves it more every year. Camp has taught her many important lessons about herself and others. The growth in her self-confidence has been measurable. She comes home standing tall and proud of her day’s accomplishments. Her amazing counselors have also taught her empathy and responsibility. She even says she wants to be a counselor when she grows up! I highly recommend camp for any child.”

How does the After School program design impact students?

The YMCA of Greater Houston After School programs are more than child care. They offer a path with a purpose. Students engage in a variety of structured activities that promote positive social interactions, indoor and outdoor play and reinforce academic learning concepts, as well as lessons in empathy, inclusion and service learning.

The program incorporates academic enrichment as well as recreational enrichment clubs based on students’ interest. All activities follow a YMCA activity lesson plan and/or evidenced-based curriculum. Clubs are intended to be age appropriate and engage students across a variety of subject areas while incorporating academic and social learning concepts through fun hands-on activities. Additional clubs can be developed based on students’ interest and campus request.

During the Y After school program, students participate in a balanced program of play and structured activities. How does the US education system work?

The rules of compulsory education are different here in each state

Content

  • 1 nursery
  • 9000 6.1 US colleges

  • 6.2 US community colleges

Nurseries

In most US families, both parents must work to live indoors. One of the ways to care for children during this period are the so-called day care centers or Nursery Schools. These are professional child care institutions that are not yet subject to compulsory schooling. However, in most cases they are paid and work half-day or full-time. US nursery accepts children as young as six weeks old.

PRE-SCHOOL

The so-called preschool school is similar to the Russian preschool. In the USA there are both public and, above all, private preschool institutions. Unlike kindergartens, in addition to childcare, they also have an educational environment. A good preparation for entering the school has already been done here. Therefore, it is recommended to switch from day care to preschool at the age of three to four years. This is especially important for children who still need to learn English.

Fee-based private preschools offer some specific learning priorities, such as math, language or music, so that parents can order their children’s education specifically.

KINDERGARTEN IN THE USA

The American kindergarten works a little differently. Here he is part of the school system and is the first grade of elementary school. Unlike more playful schools, kindergarten in the US has a rigorous curriculum and is run by a trained teacher. Here children learn to read and count.

Kindergarten attendance is free and compulsory in 15 states. Depending on where you live in the US, this can also be half-time or full-time, and the child’s age of entry.

Compulsory education required in the USA. Depending on the state, this begins between the ages of five and eight:

  • Confirmation of the child’s age: for example, passport or birth certificate
  • Proof of residence: such as a U.S. driver’s license, electric bill, lease, or tax return
  • Vaccinations: Required vaccinations vary from school to school
  • In most cases, a child’s Social Security card
  • Medical examination results, including a TB test

In principle, each school has its own rules and regulations.

School

The US school system is divided into different areas attended over a 12 year period.

  1. Pre-school education: Children under 5 attend so-called pre-schools. This is the equivalent of our kindergarten, where children study in different areas. These include, for example, art and music, as well as motor skills training.
  2. Elementary School: Elementary School must be attended from 5 or 6 to 11 years old. Children learn basic skills such as reading, writing, math, as well as social and creative skills. In addition, in elementary school, special attention is paid to sports.
  3. Middle School: From the age of 11-14, American children attend Middle School. You probably know it as “high school”. Students deepen their knowledge of English, mathematics, science, health, sports and social studies. The latter often includes study modules on US history, geography, and world history.
  4. High School: As the last compulsory school in the US from ages 14 to 18. This is the highest level of the school, where students develop even more. Here, many schools emphasize team sports, so they are usually played outside of school hours in the form of a club. Other clubs deal with science, music, theater or languages. The school newspaper and the darkroom for photography lovers are also especially popular.
  5. Any other form of study is considered optional but is especially welcomed by employers. This is especially true of a college or university where very individual degrees can be obtained.

Wonderful School Years

The school year in US schools differs slightly from our school years.

  • The school year usually starts in August or September and ends in May or June. In some places, children go to school all year round. Children go to school from Monday to Friday. Some schools offer pre-school or post-school care for children whose parents work. The extension is usually paid.
  • It is also divided into quarters: September to December is the “autumn term”, January to March is the “winter term”, and March to May or June is the “spring term”.
  • So the term “spring break” always refers to a long break in the middle of summer.
  • Your child can go to school for free until age 21 in most states. If your child did not graduate from high school, they may subsequently enroll in an adult school to complete a “general education (GED)” degree instead of high school.
  • If the school is too far away, you can take the bus. public schools have buses that are free. To find out if your child can ride the school bus, please contact your local school office. If you have a car, you can also team up with other parents in your area and you can take turns driving your kids to school.
  • Children can take their lunch to school or buy it at the cafeteria. The US government also offers nutritious meals for free or at a low cost to children who cannot afford to buy meals at school. Talk to school staff, call your child’s school to see if your child is eligible.
  • Lessons are also free for students with physical or mental disabilities. Your child will be in a regular class if possible. If your child has a severe disability, they may receive separate lessons outside of the regular class.
  • Public schools often offer books for free. Students usually need to purchase their own study materials such as notebooks and pens. If you cannot pay for this yourself, please contact your child’s school. Some schools may charge a small fee for teaching materials or field trips. Many schools offer school sports or music classes after school. You may have to pay for your children so that they can take part in this.

US college or university

Upon successful completion of high school, graduates may apply to colleges or universities. To do this, it is necessary to pass the entrance exams, as well as submit letters of recommendation from former teachers, which is so fundamentally unknown in Russia.

There are more than 90,029 4,500 accredited colleges in the United States, 90,030 offering a wide variety of study programs. There are several types of higher education within US higher education.

Colleges in the USA

By far the most common type of university are colleges. There, students complete their undergraduate studies and receive a bachelor’s degree over four years.

US Community Colleges

Community colleges have two-year programs of study in which students can earn the lowest degree in the US: the Ph.D. True, this is not recognized as an independent degree in the civilized world. However, so-called Transfer Degree programs can be the ticket to a bachelor’s program at a regular college or university.

Universities

In universities there are not only bachelor’s programs, but also master’s programs. In addition, students have the opportunity to get a doctoral degree here.

Colleges and universities generally differ in their offer of specialties. The colleges mainly offer graduate studies that culminate in a bachelor’s degree.

How is schooling different in the US? Part 1 | Training

I got to know the American “universal education” quite closely. Especially at Houston . The United States does not have a unified national education system. Each state has its own standards of education. And while regulations are issued by both the federal and state governments, often in schools located just a few kilometers from each other, but reporting to different school districts, programs can differ. Local schools are managed by the Councils of Educational Districts, something like our RONO.

Secondary education is compulsory in all states, although there is a difference in age – in some places they study from seven to nineteen, in others – from six to eighteen. Children go to public schools where they live; outside the district, you can only go to private schools. Every child, regardless of nationality, religion, gender, physical condition, English proficiency, is guaranteed a free complete secondary education. Even if you came to the USA with a child of school age on a visitor visa for 3-6 months and brought him to the nearest school, he will be accepted without any problems.

Structure of schools

The US school system is three-level and includes elementary school – Elementary school, middle – Middle school and higher – High school. Sometimes the middle and higher are combined under the general name High school, but are still divided into two levels – grades 6,7 and 8 are Junior (junior), and grades 9-12 are Senior (senior) High school, with separate buildings . Schoolchildren are called students here – Student.

Houston elementary school Elementary school is from the age of six, from grades 1 to 5. There is also a preparatory, or zero class, which is called preschool. It can be both at school and in kindergarten. Classes are usually led by one teacher, but often there is also an assistant teacher. Sometimes, especially in grades 4-5, some subjects are taught by other teachers. The number of students in classes in the state of Texas cannot be more than 24 people. This rule applies to all schools. The number of elementary schools is much larger than schools of other levels, because they are relatively small in number – 400-600 students, they are in almost every residential neighborhood (community, neighborhood).

Middle School Middle School for three years, from 6th to 8th grade. Children aged 11-12 come to this school, graduates of several elementary ones. Here the lessons are taught by subject teachers. Most secondary schools offer the same set of required subjects: English, math, science, social studies, physical education. But the Boards of different school districts have different opinions about how many academic hours should be devoted to the study of these subjects. Physical education classes are already moving to the level of sports teams, students choose one kind of sport: American or European football, basketball, swimming, athletics, etc.

Third grade, “high school” – High school , grades 9-12, more like a college than our usual school. In Houston, these are very large schools, sometimes with over 3,000 students. There are 3,500 students in the school next to us in the new residential microdistrict “Clean Lake” – “Clear Lake”. There are about the same number of students in the school where the grandson studies, it consists of a complex of buildings, huge parking lots (many high school students drive cars themselves) and several stadiums – a whole campus. I will tell you more about High school separately.

School year starts and ends, as well as holidays, do not coincide in different schools. For example, last year, the grandson’s school year began on August 18, and this year on August 24, in some schools from the middle of the week, August 13. There is no holiday, “Knowledge Day”, about the beginning of the school year. A week before the start of classes, the school notifies all parents and invites them to a general meeting. It usually takes place in the gym, everything is very casual, businesslike. The director introduces the rules of conduct at the school and the responsibility of parents. Each student or parent is given a sheet with the number of his personal locker – in order not to walk around the school with a backpack, you need to leave everything in the closet, only what is needed for this subject is taken to the lesson. Also, a schedule of lessons for the first week and a list of necessary stationery and study supplies are issued.

Schools start very early: in elementary school at 8 am, and in Middle School and High school at 7-30, the school bus picks up children at 6-15 or 6-30 . The grandson, a tenth grader, gets on the bus at 6-30, at 7-00 they are already dropped off at the school. The teachers are all in the classroom at this time. The duration of the academic year is 175 working days with a five-day week and 5-7 lessons daily. For weak performers in one or two subjects, summer schools “Summer school” are still assigned, for 3 weeks, a test is taken based on the results of the classes, and the District Council already decides whether to transfer the student to the next class or leave it for the second year.

Teachers and Principal

Principals, teachers and teacher assistants are hired by the school district and report to the Board, which includes parents of students . The profession of a teacher in the United States is very prestigious and respected. Getting a job at a school is much more difficult than at a university. The country has a multi-stage (up to 24 categories) system of remuneration for school teachers. This or that stage is awarded depending on the level of professional qualifications, performance and length of service.

The salary of a novice young teacher with a bachelor’s degree in different states ranges from $30 to $35 thousand per year, and an experienced, with experience, with a master’s or doctoral degree (PHD) is about $60 thousand. There is a system of incentive bonuses at the end of the year, for holding various competitions, olympiads, events, etc. The main advantage is in the very high level of social protection of the teacher, in medical insurance and pensions paid by the state . Therefore, the average American teacher lives in his own house, has a good car and can afford vacations in resorts. School principals receive about twice as much, depending on the type of school and the number of students. Paid leave – 20 working days – is provided only to the principal. Teachers have leave for the entire summer vacation, but unpaid. And during the school year, teachers can get 10 days of paid sick leave. During the summer holidays, teachers can improve their professional and educational level.

As in our schools, teachers in the United States write lesson plans – they are required, and every four weeks they are submitted for review. Once a month, official meetings of the director and all teachers of the school are held – like we have teachers’ councils, and once a month the director meets with each teacher individually for a conversation on various issues. The entire academic year is divided into two semesters and is divided into six-week periods. At the end of this period, scores are given for each subject (in Texas, a 100-point grading system) and sheets of grades are sent to parents. In the same place, the teacher notes what changes there are in studies – improvement or deterioration.

funeral of American singer and actress Whitney Houston

Culture, Funeral of American singer and actress Whitney Houston

NEWARK (New Jersey), February 20 – Larisa Saenko. On Sunday, when the motorcades of celebrities and crowds of reporters dispersed, and the police removed the cordon at the New Hope Church, where the closed farewell ceremony for Whitney Houston had taken place the day before, ordinary Newark citizens, fellow countrymen of the outstanding singer, reached out to the place of mourning with their modest gifts .

The red brick church on Sussex Street, where 11-year-old Whitney was taken to sing in the choir by her mother, gospel singer Cissy Houston, is in a poor black area of the city. Here, and in the center of Newark, you rarely see white faces – “colored” make up over 80% of the city’s population, and more than half are African Americans.

At the end of the 60s, an uprising broke out here with pogroms and arson, when the black poor, in protest against their position, smashed the city for almost a week.

In the neighborhood of the church there are abandoned quarters of five-story buildings with broken windows – former social quarters where the unemployed lived. Nearby is a seemingly uninhabited railway station among the ruins of demolished buildings. In these quarters, the rhythm and blues star was born.

Today, the townspeople pay tribute to her not only for her golden voice, but also for the fact that she helped orphans, invested in local schools, supported the movement for the rights of blacks.

Funeral in gospel style

“Yesterday, we, former neighbors, could not get through here, everything was cordoned off by the police. And today I brought her flowers and sweets,” local resident Huang, whose house is located just a block away, told RIA Novosti. from the church where the memorial service was held.

Juan’s house is the last one left from the time when Whitney sang here, the rest are being demolished due to dilapidation. According to him, Juan met the singer at a “black party” in a house opposite the church. “Then Whitney was not yet famous, she was seventeen years old. I extended my hand to her for a greeting, and in response she slapped the top like this,” Juan shows. To the church wall, which is all hung with balloons, flowers and messages to Houston, he attached the flag of Puerto Rico – a symbol of his homeland.

The Temple of A New Hope was as full on Sunday as it was at Whitney’s official farewell, which was broadcast live the day before. Pastor Joe Carter gave a sermon, Whitney was commemorated with a loud hallelujah, and then the chants began. The black parishioners, standing in tight rows, sang, danced, clapped to the beat of the soloists on the stage and raised their hands in a farewell gesture. The third Sunday service in a row that day was again dedicated to the most famous countrywoman, and the hall for one and a half thousand seats was again packed to capacity.

On the same day, A New Hope became a place of pilgrimage for residents of all areas of Newark, despite the fact that the city has many temples and is more beautiful and richer. In the basement of the church stood two giant white bouquets of lilies and roses that had not yet withered – the same ones that bordered the coffin of the deceased at the funeral ceremony on Saturday.

From Newark with love

The Whigham Funeral Funeral Home, where Whitney Houston’s body was kept for almost a week after it was brought from Beverly Hills, has also been turned into a memorial. Behind the glass doors, a portrait of the singer with a huge bouquet of yellow roses was installed here, and the townspeople bring here, as well as to the church, mournful letters. “Now you sing in the choir of angels in heaven”, “God took her back”, “I listened to your songs and imitated you even in outfits.

The Golden Rules of Life by Leila Denmark, the world’s oldest practicing pediatrician

Leila Alice Denmark (1898 – 2012) – American pediatrician, one of the developers of the whooping cough vaccine, was the oldest practicing pediatrician in the world, retiring at the age of 103 in May 2001.

She is one of the few centenarians who have crossed the 110-year milestone, who are known not only for their longevity.

Born in Portal, Georgia, she was the third of 12 children in a family of farmers. Danmark studied at college to be an educator, but decided to go to medical school after her fiancé, John E. Danmark, was sent to Fr. Java to Indonesia. If she had received a pedagogical education, her husband would not have been allowed to take her with him, but medicine was a sought-after specialty in Java.
nine0006

She was the only woman among the 1918 Medical College of Georgia graduates.

After returning from Indonesia, the couple settled in Atlanta, where Leila Denmark worked first at Grady Hospital and then at Eggleston Children’s Hospital. Since 1931, she began private practice.

In 1932, she dealt with the whooping cough epidemic that claimed 75 human lives in Georgia. Thanks to the research of Leila Denmark, during which she managed to cure her daughter, Mary Alice (1930 years old), the production of a vaccine against whooping cough was started.

L. Denmark described the effectiveness of her research in the American Journal of Diseases of Children (Studies in Whooping Cough: Diagnosis and Immunization, 1936; Whooping Cough Vaccine, 1942). For her achievements, Danmark received the Fisher Prize in 1935.

In 1945 she moved to Sandy Springs, where she continued her pediatric practice. At the age of 87, L. Danmark wanted to retire and moved to the city of Alpharetta, but eventually continued to work as a doctor there as well.
nine0006

Only in 2001, L. Denmark left her job due to vision problems.

At 103, she was probably the oldest practicing physician in the world. Interestingly, her longevity can hardly be explained by heredity. Her mother died at 45, her father 20 years later.

In 1971, she published a book entitled Every Child Should Have A Chance, later reprinted several times. Leila Denmark outlined her philosophy of attitude towards children.
nine0006

Among other things, she was one of the first doctors to point out the harm of smoking in the presence of children, for children inhaling smoke. She also sharply criticized the use of drugs, the use of coffee and alcohol by pregnant women and in general. L. Denmark believed that drinking cow’s milk does not benefit children, and instead of drinking juices, she recommended eating vegetables.

Leila Danmark is the recipient of numerous awards and titles, including receiving an honorary doctorate from Emory University in Atlanta in 2000, and in 1953 – the title of “Woman of the Year” in Atlanta.

Leila Denmark died on April 1, 2012 at the age of 114 years and 2 months.

Below are some quotes from Leila Alice Danmark, and her statements about parenting are very interesting and noteworthy:

The secret to a long life is to eat right and love everything you do. When you do what you don’t like, it’s work. When you do what you love, it’s a game. I haven’t worked a day in my life.
nine0006

***

Wealth is when you have something to give to those in need. If I had a million, I would give it to the poor.

***

It takes a lot of stupid people for the rich to get richer.

***

They don’t make an appointment with me. You never know when a child will get sick.

***

Never take anything you can’t pay for.
nine0006

***

Many people think about tomorrow. But is it worth it? Tomorrow may not come.

***

Being a good mother or father is the only worthwhile job on Earth. The most precious thing a child can have in their life is their parents.

***

When a child stops sucking on his mother’s breast: no tea, no coffee, no Coca-Cola. Only water. Children become anemic from cow’s milk. The calf, when it stops sucking the udder, goes to the pasture. He only eats grass. And how healthy and strong he grows. I have never tried Coca-Cola, tea or coffee. From 7 months I drank only pure water.
nine0006

***

It happens that a mother complains: “Well, why did my child do this?”. And I say: look in the mirror. Children are like sponges, soaking up everything they see.

***

Education has gone out of fashion. Children do not receive advice from their parents. They do not guide their children.

***

Being a woman is great. There was never any doubt about this.

***
nine0006

It is not poverty that harms people, but a lack of attention, indifference.

***

I always listened very carefully to what my husband said. She did everything she asked with pleasure. He is the same. I loved the mountains and camping. He is too. We had fun living together.

***

Never do or say anything that one day you want to forget.

***

In any situation, you must maintain a sense of humor.
nine0006

***

Do not pick up a baby who is crying. You can pick it up, check if it’s dry, but don’t nurse it. The baby should cry up to 8 hours a day. This is part of the development of his lungs. Let him cry while he is small. Otherwise, you will cry when you grow up.

***

I do not claim that my methods are the only correct ones. I will never tell another specialist that his prescription is wrong. The choice is up to the parents. Only they can know what is best for the child. I practiced pediatrics for 75 years. These methods have worked all the time.
nine0006

***

Would you like to lie down and chew gum all day long? No. Then why do you give pacifiers to children?

***

The most important thing you can do is to have a positive impact on at least one person. Our blessing is to live in this world, right now. We can say that everything is bad. But everything will be bad later. There.

      Before & After School Care

Before- and after-school care for elementary students is provided by Right At School on-site at the district’s elementary schools. The program takes place in a student’s home school directly before and after the school day.

      • Before-school care runs from 7:30 a.m. to the start of school.
      • After-care runs from the conclusion of school until 5 p.m.
      • Parents/guardians must transport students to school in the morning for before-care and must pick them up in the evening if they attend after-care.

      Why Right At School?
Right At School is focused exclusively on student enrichment for children in elementary schools. Rather than offering “day-care” or “babysitting,” our highly trained and passionate educators make sure the learning carries on before and after school in a fun and meaningful manner. Your children will experience best-in-class, fun-filled programs focused on building their creativity, conditioning, character and confidence. We are reliable (programs run every day school is in session), flexible (register for 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 days/week), and convenient (we offer a daily drop-in option). And all of this happens right in the comfort and safety of the elementary schools.

Is Right At School an Outside Company?
Yes. However we take our partnership with Radnor very seriously and communicate often with the principals and any school/district contacts.

Can I speak to someone directly?
Families can speak directly to Right At School personnel anytime by calling 855-AT-SCHOOL (855-287-2466) during the hours of 8:30 a. m.–5:30 p.m. (CST). During program hours, parents will be able to call their child’s Right At School Program Manager on a dedicated phone that each Program Manager carries. You will also be able to contact a local Area Manager when one has been hired in mid-June. Phone numbers can be found on our website on the Locations and Pricing page.

How will I know where to drop my child off and/or pick my child up?
A week prior to school starting each family will receive a Welcome Letter from Right At School which will provide details such as what entrance to use during program hours, exact program location within your specific school, as well as profiles and contact information for your program staff.

      What is The Right Club?
The Right Club is in your school every day that school is in session. We begin when the school bell rings and continue until 6 p.m. You can choose as many days as you’d like for your children to attend and you can change your schedule if needed. We provide enrichment- and fitness-based activities for families needing reliable and meaningful 2 support after school. Early Adventures is the morning program which begins at 7:30 a.m. until school begins.

Where will The Right Club be located in my school?
Right At School will partner with each school principal to secure adequate space for our programs. Should our programs grow over the course of the year, we will again partner with the school principal to ensure a continued quality environment for our program location.

What does a typical day look like in The Right Club?

      1. Town Hall Meeting (~15 minutes) – At the school bell, children will gather in a designated after school meeting location, where our educators will take attendance and serve a healthy snack. The day is then kicked-off with a Town Hall Meeting, where students will share news and special events, and our educators will set the schedule and expectations for the day.
      2. The Right Moves (~10 minutes) – After a long school day, we know kids need to let out their energy. We spend ten minutes dancing, doing yoga stretches, or team games; just enough time to get out their “wiggles” and refocus their energy on homework.
      3. Homework Time (~45 minutes) – Our educators provide a quiet and supervised environment for students to work on their homework. If students complete their homework early, they will have quiet activities to choose. Students may choose to lengthen their homework time block if additional time is needed.
      4. Daily Double/Enrichment (~45 minutes) – Kids will participate in fun, enrichment-based activities, such as arts and crafts, science experiments, drama, etc. Enrichment unit topics, such as “Phenomenal Earth,” “Top Secret,” and “Vikings, Sailors, & Pirates, Oh My!,” which change every two weeks. Kids are offered additional activities outside the scheduled curriculum with our Daily Double or Triple Play options which provides our students with choice.
      5. Fun Fitness (~30 minutes) – We may be outside on the playground, or inside playing kickball or making up a dance routine. Either way, making time for daily movement and learning sportsmanship is an integral part of our day. We also allow for students to self-navigate during this time as well.
      6. Free Play (~30 minutes) – We know kids need time for self-navigation and free play! We have an ample supply of arts and crafts supplies, board games, card games, chess sets, and sports equipment available for kids to stretch their creative muscles!

What will my child eat for snack? Is breakfast provided for Early Adventure students?
Right At School will provide a healthy, nut-free snack every afternoon. Children are welcome to bring their own snacks from home if they prefer (please make sure they are nut-free). Some examples of snacks are fresh fruit, fruit cups, crackers, granola bars, raisins, and fresh items like yogurt, and cheese (when refrigeration is available). Right At School does not provide breakfast during Early Adventures, however children are allowed to bring a nut free snack from home if they would like.

How many days a week can my child be part of The Right Club?
Families may sign-up for 1-5 days per week of the Early Adventures before-school program or the Right Club after-school program and can change their schedule as needed each month.

What type of training is provided to the staff?
Examples of Right At School educators are experienced post-graduate and current college students with a passion for working with children. As part of our focus on safety, our employees must pass comprehensive fingerprint background checks. In addition, our educators receive ongoing safety training and abuse prevention and neglect training, and all of our Program Managers are CPR-certified. Our educators also participate in extensive education- and behavior management-focused training throughout the year. All staff go through training during the fall which comprises of child development, professional expectations, positive guidance, equaling approximately 20 hours of training. On-going training, mentoring and coaching also happens throughout the school year as well.

What is the student to staff ratio and will a Program Manager be on site?
Student to staff ratio is 1:12. Programs will be staffed with a Program Manager at each location. The Program Manager is responsible for managing the Right At School programs at their assigned school. Educators work under the supervision of the Program Managers. Each program will have a minimum of one Educator and as the 4 enrollment grows additional Educators will be added to ensure student to staff ratios are always followed.

Can I add a day to my child’s Right Club schedule?
Families may change their child’s Right Club class schedule at any time by logging into your account and selecting “Change my Child’s Schedule.” For week-of schedule changes, please call Customer Service at 855-287-2466. I can’t pick up my child on a day they are not signed up, can they do a drop-in?
Yes! We offer drop-ins into our program at a flat fee of $40 per child per day. You must register online or via phone by noon the day of for after school and the day prior for before school. We also have a Drop-in punch card which can be purchased in advance and is good for 10 drop-in days to be used as needed. The Drop-in punch card can be purchased for $360.

When is Tuition due for Right Club?
Right Club tuition is automatically billed monthly.

Are there any extra fees to Right Club?
There is an annual $50 registration fee per-family for all Right Club programs, which is due in full upon registration.

I have more than one child with Right At School, do I get a discount?
Yes! When siblings are enrolled in any Right Club option, there is a 10% discount on the tuition for each additional child.

Right At School’s program was cancelled today, will I get a refund?
No refunds will be given for programs that are cancelled due to weather, facility issues, school closures, school-dictated unavailability of space, or any other issue beyond Right At School’s direct control.

Are we charged for days that school is not in session?
There are no refunds given for any days of student non-attendance (i.e. holidays, half days, professional development days, etc.). Tuition is set based on the actual number of school days in the academic calendar year and does not bill for holidays and other school days off. The total tuition for the academic year is divided into equal monthly payments for convenience.

The Y makes the most of your child’s after school time by offering active learning opportunities designed to engage and expand young minds. Housed in local schools, YMCA Before & After School Care gives your child the opportunity to participate in active play and collaborate on fun projects.
