Village Playgarden is a holistic farm forest early childhood program nestled in the foothills of Altadena, California. Our preschool, kindergarten, childcare, and summer programming is an outdoor early childhood experience and intentional community for children aged 2 through 7 years old; and summer programming for youth 7 through 12 years old. Our work is rooted in the traditions of Lifeways Waldorf early childhood education, inclusive and anti-biased curriculum, nonviolent conscious parenting, place-based outdoor education, and regenerative farming.

Our Staff

Village Playgarden faculty and staff is a culturally and racially diverse community of professionals committed to the whole well-being of young children and their families. Our faculty is engaged in constant professional development and the deep study of child and human development, including; training and education in Waldorf early childhood teacher certification; and the latest knowledge and wisdom in developmental neuroscience and sensory integration; nonviolent and compassionate communication, relationship-based community building; developmentally appropriate anti-biased and anti-racist curriculum. But most importantly our faculty has an authentic love for young children with a passion for supporting their families. In addition to the faculty, our community is run by dedicated administrative staff who work to facilitate your positive experience at Village; and a Wildseed Farm and Healthy Food Program team that keeps our regenerative relationship with the land alive and our community nourished.

Petaluma KinderCare Programs

Infant Programs (6 weeks–1 year)

Leaving your baby in someone else’s care is a big step. Everyone at our
centers—most importantly, our naturally gifted infant teachers—will work with
you to make sure the transition goes smoothly. When you step into our infant
classroom, you’ll see how much we want your infant to feel safe, loved, and
ready to explore their world.

Toddler Programs (1–2 Years)

Everything in our toddler classroom is designed for little explorers. That’s
because a lot is going on at this age. When your child is wandering all over the
place, that means they’re learning and discovering new things every day. We’ll
help them explore their interests (and find new ones!) as they play and learn.

Discovery Preschool Programs (2–3 Years)

This age is filled with so much wonder and curiosity. That’s why we offer a ton
of books and toys and bring artwork down to kids eye level. Children in
discovery preschool also begin to learn how we all work together in a
classroom. Simple math and science, pretend play, and group play help them
get used to a more structured school setting.

Preschool Programs (3–4 Years)

This age is all about expression, when kids really start to form their own ideas
about what they want to play and how they want to create. Every day in our
preschool classroom, your child will explore science experiments, create
artwork, and play pretend—all the skills needed for their big next step:
kindergarten!

Prekindergarten Programs (4–5 Years)

When you walk into one of our pre-K classrooms, you’ll see artwork and
writing displayed around the room. Labels are everywhere to help kids connect
letters with words. You’ll also see pictures on the walls that reflect the families
in our community. Your child will also deepen their knowledge in language,
math, science, Spanish, and social skills.

Learning Adventures – Enrichment Program

Cooking Academy™ (3 – 12 Years)

In Cooking Academy, kids learn new recipes from cultures around the world and
develop a healthy relationship with food. They’ll whip up everything from Southwest
rainbow lettuce wraps to pumpkin muffins, building their skills in STEM, communication,
and more along the way. And yes—little chefs get to eat their culinary creations!

Music Explorers™ (2 – 4 Years)

KinderCare families are already giving a standing ovation to our newest Learning
Adventures program: Music Explorers! Kids will learn to sing, move, listen, play
instruments, and even create their own tunes. Our original curriculum blends math,
science, social studies, literacy, and mindfulness (think yoga!) for a uniquely KinderCare
way of learning the foundations of music.

Phonics Adventures® (2 – 4 Years)

Learning how to read is a whole lot of fun at KinderCare! We help kids grow to love
books and words (and get ready for kindergarten) in our Phonics Adventures program.
From discovering the basics of vowels to practicing poetry, kids learn all about letters
and sounds in small-group lessons made just for their age group. (Bonus: Kids who
attend our phonics program are more prepared than their peers for school—and we
have the data to prove it.)

STEM Innovators (3-8 Years)

You’ve probably heard a lot about how important STEM education is for your child, but
what does that really mean? Our STEM Innovators program takes kids’ natural ability to
make sense of the world and applies it to robotics, chemistry, coding, geology, and
more. While your child experiments, they’ll discover how to use technology to do
amazing things!

We provide nutritious meals and snacks developed by a registered dietician to meet the needs of rapidly growing
bodies and minds. If your child has special dietary requirements and you would prefer to bring in
their lunch, please make arrangements with the center director.

Do you support alternative diets?

We strive to be as inclusive as possible. To that point, we provide a vegetarian option at mealtime,
take care to not serve common allergens and can adapt menus based on your child’s food
sensitivities. If your child has additional needs, we’ll work with you to figure out a plan.

Does my child need to be potty-trained?

Every child begins toilet learning at a different age. Until your child shows an interest in toilet
learning, we’ll provide diaper changes on an as-needed basis. When your child shows an interest,
we’ll discuss how to work
together to encourage toilet learning.

How does naptime work at Petaluma KinderCare?

Our teachers meet every child’s needs during naptime. Our teachers know how to get babies to nap.

    I can’t tell you enough how incredible and wonderful your staff is at this facility. Being a first-time mother, I was very anxious about returning to work and the options I had for infant care are very limited. I was so fortunate to have contacted KinderCare and toured the facility many months in advance, to prepare for when I would return to work. The staff at KinderCare is truly amazing.     Dear KinderCare Management,
     
    My husband and I wanted to tell you about two of your amazing teachers, Miss Susie and Miss Christina in the infant room.  Our son Luke has been in the care of Miss Susie and Miss Christina since he was five months old and this will be his last week with them before he moves to the toddler room.  We are so sad that Luke will no longer be with these two amazing teachers.  He has grown so attached to Miss Susie and Miss Christina as these ladies treat the kids as if they are their own.  Not only do they take great care of our son and all of the other infants, but they truly love each child and it definitely shows. Our son (and my husband and I) are greatly going to miss Susie and Christina.
     
    Miss Susie and Miss Christina should definitely be recognized, as they are the ones that give KinderCare the excellent reputation that it has.

    going on at our center! We offer care for ages 6 weeks- 12
    years old. Our Preschool and Pre Kindergarten programs now
    offer spanish as a part of their new curriculum. We also have new
    curriculum for our Infant, Toddler and Discovery Preschool
    programs. Come join our Family!
  • Here at KinderCare Petaluma, the health and safety of your children
    is one of our top priorities. Not only are all of our perimeter
    doors locked to ensure security, but all of our playgrounds are
    fenced with locked gates as well. In addition, the doors to our
    center have a coded entry where only authorized family members will
    have the code to enter. We have a Health and Safety Coordinator on
    site. This role includes conducting emergency drills, ensuring
    staff CPR and First Aid cards are up to date, maintaining high
    cleanliness standards and watching for the overall saftey of all
    the children.

Ilsur Metshin evaluated kindergarten No. 395 after overhaul – News

(City of Kazan KZN.RU, December 6, Diana Zhilenkova). In the Moskovsky district of Kazan, the overhaul of the kindergarten No. 395 of a combined type, located on Serov Street, was completed. After the renovation, the design capacity of the preschool institution increased to 280 places, two nursery groups and one group for children with disabilities appeared. The mayor of the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, Ilsur Metshin, assessed the results of the overhaul and talked with the designers who developed the project for the renovated preschool institution, and the head of the kindergarten. It is expected that he will receive pupils by the New Year.

“Whenever you come to kindergarten, you think what else can be done and how to be creative. But you made me very happy, well done! – praised I. Metshin designers. – When everyone – both designers and management – unites in the desire to make something beautiful, a flight of thought arises. In a two-story brick building built in 1988 with an area of ​​2.5 thousand square meters, repair work started in the spring. In the kindergarten, the roof and facade, entrance groups and engineering networks were updated, windows were replaced, load-bearing structures were strengthened, injection was performed, the territory was landscaped, and shade canopies and small architectural forms were installed. The customer of the work was GKU “GISU RT”, the contractor – LLC “Stroyprogress”.

As Sergey Mironov, head of the administration of the Kirovsky and Moskovsky districts, told the Mayor, when choosing the design of the premises, the emphasis was placed on natural motives. Sand drawings appeared on the walls, conveying the atmosphere of the beach, and images of birds from their native land. Children can also see artificial nests of swallows here, as well as plant growing laboratories.

“Now children are more intellectually developed. But it is very important that the child understands what ecology is, loves nature and treats it with trepidation. Care for others, younger brothers, plants and yourself also begins with a careful attitude to nature, – explained the head of the kindergarten, Landysh Yarullina. “We will continue to support this direction.”

The pre-school institution has a music and sports halls, a theater studio, a methodological office, a teacher-psychologist’s office, medical, massage and physiotherapy rooms, as well as a catering unit and a laundry.

In total, kindergarten No. 395 is designed for 12 groups. At the moment, children do not attend it and are waiting for the opening of a preschool institution. For the duration of the work, they were distributed to nearby preschool institutions of the district. “The wishes of the parents were taken into account,” the manager noted. – The children were sent to kindergartens in the same microdistrict. Now they are waiting for the opening to return back. While we are holding master classes for children, these are adaptation events so that they get used to the new space,” L. Yarullina explained.

It should be noted that Kindergarten No. 395 took second place in the nomination “Best Renovation Object” at the Kazanysh Architecture and Construction Forum, which was organized last week in the Uram Extreme Park by the City Development Institute on the initiative of Kazan Mayor Ilsur Metshin.

In total, there are 312 pre-school educational institutions in the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, which are attended by 76.3 thousand children. Enrollment in pre-school education is estimated at 69%. The occupancy of groups in kindergartens is 104 children per 100 places, the order in which children are placed is 7409human. In total, 12 preschool institutions of the city are included in the overhaul program this year.

There are 39 kindergartens in the Moscow region of Kazan. More than 6.4 thousand children are covered by preschool education.

Together with the head of the city, the head of the Education Department of the Executive Committee of Kazan Irek Rizvanov, the director of the Department for the maintenance and servicing of social institutions Petr Korolev and the general director of the contracting organization Stroyprogress LLC Alfred Khairullin examined the renovated preschool institution.

It’s dinner time, and Tiffany Montgomery will head to work soon. But first, she drops her five kids off at child care, where they’ll spend the night.

When KUOW met her, Montgomery worked the night shift at a liquor distribution warehouse, driving forklifts and checking stock. She has since changed jobs but still works overnight, as does her husband.

Montgomery said finding overnight care for all five of their children was no easy feat. “I had to go through two counties,” she said.

Montgomery said it took her months to find a place that would take her children late in the day.

Overnight daycare was an adjustment for the kids at first, she said. Her youngest is 1 year old and her oldest is 9 years old. Most of her children hadn’t been to daycare, let alone overnight.

“Avalon, obviously, this is his first year of life, so he’s probably like, what’s going on?” Montgomery said. “He was nursing. But he’s transitioned to bottles pretty well.”

Just 5 percent of child care providers in Washington state have overnight hours, according to a report from Child Care Aware of Washington, a nonprofit that helps match families with care providers in their area.

And, according to their data, the number of overnight providers in King County has dropped by almost half in recent years, down to 115 in 2018.

It was a big part of why the family recently moved to King County.

LG child care in Renton is a licensed operation run out of a private home, owned by Janice Bates. Outside there’s a big yard with toys and an undercover area for outside play when it’s too hot or rainy.

Inside, there are colorful cubbies, mats covered in numbers and letters, and dozens of tubs with toys.

When they arrive, Montgomery’s kids come inside to say hello and then move to the yard, where they race and listen to music. Montgomery said she’s encouraged them to think of this as their second home and family. They’ve grown to like it, she said.

Studies show that irregular work shifts can have downsides for kids, from health problems to behavior issues. But Montgomery said she sees a big upside.

“I’m able to spend the daytime with them,” she said. “It’s really fulfilling to be there for them while they’re awake and then while they’re asleep, they won’t even notice I’m gone for the most part.”

Numbers from Child Care Aware of Washington indicate that the demand for overnight care and the capacity for such care are about on par across the state. But that doesn’t mean open spots are always located where they’re needed.

“Even though there aren’t thousands upon thousands of children who need this care, there are some,” said Marcia Jacobs, who works at the nonprofit.

“For those families, it’s a critical need. And the providers that do this really help keep these families afloat. It’s very important work.”

Janice Bates, the owner of LG child care where Montgomery’s kids go, said she began offering around-the-clock child care after parents called her up, asking if she could open at 4 a.m. or take their kids overnight.

“I started to go, hmmm, let me see, let’s try this,” Bates said.

Montgomery’s kids are there overnight. Another two children are picked up at 1 a.m. And the first morning drop off is at 4 a.m.

Bates said night shift parents often want to move to days, but that can get tricky for her. When a parent lands a 9-to-5 job, she doesn’t always have spots during those hours for kids who used to come overnight.

For now, the night shift is working for Montgomery and her family — working nights pays more, and she said it would be tough to find daycare slots for all her kids if she switched to working days, partly because of the broad age range.

By about 7 p.m., with their mom off to work, Montgomery’s kids sit down for a snack. They’ll soon bunk down for the night, sleeping together in the same room.

They know mom will be back in the morning, in time to take them to school.

WHAT NOT TO DO!

1. Feed the baby lying down. Put your baby to bed with you.

Never put a baby of the first 6 months of life next to you on your bed when feeding or putting to bed at night! Falling asleep next to him, you run the risk of crushing the child with your body and creating an obstacle for his breathing, which can lead to tragic consequences – asphyxia (suffocation) of the baby. nine0006

2. Leaving a child alone to prevent accidents.

Project “My favorite toy”

On November 2, 2022, the project “My Favorite Toy” was held in the Fidget group. Toys for a child are an environment that allows you to explore the world around you, form and realize creative abilities, and express feelings. During the thematic week, the children developed a careful attitude to toys, with the help of them the children learned to communicate and get to know themselves. During the conversations, the children learned a lot about the history of toys and their production. They read and learned by heart the poems of A. Barto “Toys”, activated the vocabulary. They learned to play together, do not quarrel and treat toys with care.

November 12 Sinichkin Day is an ecological holiday.

A few years ago, a wonderful ecological holiday “Sinichkin’s Day” appeared in Russia. There has long been a folk tradition on November 12 to meet wintering birds. Since that time, they began to hang out feeders, lay out top dressing for birds. This tradition formed the basis of this holiday. The teachers told the children about the birds of our region that in the warm season they live in the forests, and when the cold comes, the titmouse fly closer to people, to a city or village. They encouraged children to show a caring attitude towards birds, supported their feeling of empathy for birds in the winter season.

The teacher posed a problem for the children: how can they help the birds now so that they do not freeze in the cold? We found out that they can be fed. From the proposed products, the children chose lard, seeds, cereals. We learned that titmouses also make houses where they hide in winter. And then the guys made crafts with their own hands.

Day of National Unity

On the eve of the holiday “Day of National Unity”, the educators of our preschool educational institution held events for the pupils with the aim of introducing children to the holiday – “Day of National Unity”, expanding children’s ideas about their native land, the country in which we live, development of curiosity, instilling love for the Motherland, fostering patriotic feelings, a friendly attitude towards each other, a desire to help. The children made handicrafts for the holiday.

The cost of daycare and preschool programs often gives parents sticker shock, but there is a lot that goes into providing a high-quality early childhood program. From renting a space and maintaining the facilities to paying staff what they deserve, here’s an overview of the three largest expenses daycare and preschool programs face that get factored into tuition costs:

  • Facilities: A daycare or preschool program either rents or owns the space it’s housed in. There were likely costs associated with renovating the space to make it safe and to meet licensing requirements. A lot of the cost of running an early childhood program is related to maintaining the space to keep it safe and up to state standards. Then there are utilities— the electricity, water, phone, and internet, it all adds up!
  • Staffing: Another huge factor that goes into the cost of daycare is recruiting and keeping staff. Childcare staff are often required to hold credentials or even early childhood degrees to meet state licensing requirements and deserve to be compensated according to their level of education and experience. Another aspect of maintaining a licensed early childhood program is needing to maintain adult-child ratios, so programs have to have enough staff to safely run their programs. 
  • Materials and furniture: If you are providing care for children five days a week, eight to ten hours a day you will need furniture and materials and keep them entertained, safe, fed, and learning! From classroom furniture to toys and educational materials, there are a lot of materials required to run a daycare or preschool program. Also, the materials have to be high-quality to avoid too much wear and tear from daily use— so they are often expensive!

There are also some hidden costs, aside from tuition, that parents should keep in mind when searching for a daycare or preschool program for their child. 

  • Registration fees and deposits: Some programs charge an application fee or require a deposit to hold a child’s spot.  
  • Food: Some programs offer food (which is factored into the tuition cost) but others may require families to pack a lunch and snacks each day. Additionally, if you’re looking for daycare for your infant, you will need to provide formula and/or breastmilk for them. 
  • Transportation costs: Will you be driving your child to and from daycare or using public transportation? Gas money and mileage can also be factored into the costs associated with daycare. 

Is childcare affordable in Georgia?

Childcare is too expensive for many families in Georgia. The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) deems childcare unaffordable if it exceeds 7% of a household’s income. For example, infant care for one child would take up 15.5% of a median family’s income. For comparison, that is $1,324 (18.4%) more per year than in-state tuition for a four-year public college. That means that childcare costs more than college tuition in the state of Georgia.  

Are there options for subsidized childcare in Georgia?

While the cost of childcare can be out of reach for some families, there is help available. From state subsidies to free pre-k programs, there are options available to help defer the cost. 

One of the options available to offset the cost of childcare is CAPS, Georgia’s childcare subsidy program. To qualify for CAPS, a family would need to fall into one of the following priority categories:

  • Child Protective Services (CPS) and court-ordered supervision cases 
  • Children in Georgia Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) custody 
  • Families experiencing domestic violence  
  • Families of children with disabilities 
  • Families of children enrolled in Georgia’s Pre-K Program 
  • Families participating in or transitioning from TANF 
  • Families who have experienced a natural disaster 
  • Families who lack fixed, regular, and adequate housing 
  • Families with low income as defined by CAPS 
  • Grandparents Raising Grandchildren (GRG) 
  • Minor parents 
  • Student parent

Another option for families in Georgia is Head Start and Early Head Start, free federally-funded early childhood programs that offer services to the family as a whole. There are income eligibility requirements that a family needs to meet to qualify for Head Start, and there may be other factors considered as well. 

Georgia also offers free preschool options for four-year-olds. Georgia’s free Pre-K program provides a 6.5-hour school day, 5 days a week, 180 days a year at no cost to families. The individual providers set their application process, so it is best to reach out to them directly. Registration is generally through a lottery. 

Other ways to make preschool and daycare more affordable

Even if you don’t qualify for free preschool, you may be able to take advantage of other childcare discounts.

  • Sibling discounts: many providers offer discounts if a family has multiple children enrolled in their program
  • Military discounts: Military families are eligible for discounts and subsidies, and in some cases have access to facilities dedicated to serving military families.  
  • Paying in full: Some providers offer discounts if tuition is paid in full up-front as opposed to in monthly payments.

Life is pretty busy for Mike Buchmann, a high school art teacher and football coach, and his wife Shannon, who works as an assistant controller at a small private college near their home in Mishawaka, Ind.

Everyone is out the door by 7:45 each morning: Mike shuttles their two older kids to before-school care, while Shannon drops off their 14-month-old at a church-based child care center before they head off to their full-time jobs.

After their mortgage — which is about 20 percent of their combined take-home pay — child care is the family’s biggest expense. In fact, the cost of their youngest child’s day care alone — $660 a month — is more than half the family’s monthly mortgage payment.

You can sleep when you’re dead. That’s how you feel when you’re a parent anyway, you’re tired all the time anyway, you may as well make some money.

Mike Buchmann, Ohio father of three

At the end of the month — after making payments for utilities, their car and Mike’s school loan — the family has “zero for savings and zero left over,” he says.

“All of a sudden, my wife is looking around, saying here’s the bottom line: There’s more red ink than there is black, we gotta do something about it.”

That’s why, several times a month — after he works a full day, coaches football after school, helps feed and bathe the kids before tucking them into bed — Mike heads out and spends a few more hours driving for Uber.

“It’s a little hectic and the hours are insane. But you can sleep when you’re dead,” the 43-year-old says. “That’s how you feel when you’re a parent anyway, you’re tired all the time anyway, you may as well make some money.”

The Buchmann family isn’t alone. Across the country, parents are hustling to find ways to balance the high cost of child care with their budgets.

Chan School of Public Health found that nearly one-third of parents who have a fee for child care say the cost has caused a financial problem for their household — and of those, more than 70 percent said it is a somewhat or very serious problem.

And no wonder: The average cost of day care in the U.S. — $9,589 per year — edges out the average cost of in-state college tuition at $9,410, according to a recent report from New America, a think tank in Washington, D.C., in collaboration with Care.com, an online resource that connects families and caregivers.

To put that in perspective another way: In four states — Kentucky, Montana, Oregon and Wisconsin — average child care costs exceed median rent. In 11 states — Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, South Dakota, Vermont, Washington — and the District of Columbia, the average cost of full-time day care is more than 90 percent of median rent.

That means for many families, a significant chunk of household spending goes toward child care; in states such as Mississippi and West Virginia, child care costs account for 40 to 45 percent of total household income.

Compare that to the Department of Health and Human Services’ benchmark for affordable care: 10 percent of family income.

But these numbers capture only a fraction of the challenge and stress facing families with young children in need of care.

Ask just about any parent — regardless of where in the U.S. they live, socioeconomic status or race — and they’re likely to have strong opinions and a story to tell of juggling priorities, cutting costs and employing creative strategies to get the best child care they can afford. A few of the NPR poll respondents share their stories.

A Wisconsin family embraces frugality

Child care is the single biggest monthly expense for Danielle Westhoff Smith and her husband Cameron: They spend more than $2,000 — or 34 percent of their monthly take-home pay — on child care for their 3-year-old and 4-month-old. By comparison, rent for their three-bedroom home in Madison amounts to a quarter of their income. Wisconsin is among the states where average child care costs are more than median rent.

Danielle, 33, is a postdoctoral fellow researching Ebola at the University of Wisconsin; her husband, a former engineer who is now an attorney for the state government. To make ends meet, the family lives frugally. They don’t have cable, shopped around for a no-contract cell phone plan that costs $50 a month and bought “semi-smart” phones out of pocket. They eat out only once or twice a month. They have one car and use public transportation. They’re trying to save $1,000 a month toward a down payment on a house and retirement, but miscellaneous expenses crop up all too frequently and there’s not much left over.

“We don’t have enough in the budget to save anything for their college,” Danielle says. “I’m basically paying for it right now.”

And it’s no exaggeration: In Wisconsin, the annual cost for infant care at a center is $11,579, compared to $8,781 for in-state college tuition, according to a 2015 report from Childcare Aware of America. The Smiths pay $27,000 a year for their two children, with infant care accounting for a larger proportion of the total. On average, infant care at a center costs 12 percent more nationwide than for older children.

Managing these costs is a huge concern and affects more than just decisions about money.

“We have quite a few friends who had their children shortly after our first and now are thinking about second children, and it’s all about cost of day care and the timing,” she says. “All of our friends are in that same situation.”

Danielle and Cameron would like to have three kids — “it’s kind of our number,” she says — but they are putting it off purely for financial reasons.

They’ll wait until either their son starts elementary school or Danielle is at a point in her career that she can take a year off work to stay home with the kids. They did the calculations and a third child is the tipping point at which day care will cost more than she earns. She’s put a lot of thought into when it would be best, professionally, for her to take a break — and how the timing will affect her future job prospects.

She never imagined that life in her 30s would require so much financial vigilance.

“When you go to college and plan your career … you don’t expect to be in a position where you have to nickel and dime everything,” she says. “It just kind of hit us. We’re right at that age where we’re starting our jobs, starting our families.”

She feels fortunate that they’re able to make ends meet. Still, she can’t help but worry.

“When you talk about finances and planning for the future, I know it’s not enough, and so it makes me nervous,” she says.

“But what options do you have? Not have children?” she continues. “That’s something that’s really important to us.”

An Ohio family makes a plan and sticks to it

Michelle and Stephen Chester, of Cincinnati, are feeling similar anxieties.

“We’re nearing 40, and it’s like, OK, we thought we’d have these kinds of problems and such in our 20s, and here we are, almost 40, and we’re still having these issues,” says Michelle, who is 37.

Child care costs have squeezed the family particularly hard for the last 14 months, after the birth of twin daughters.

Michelle and Stephen spend $2,000 a month on full-time care for their daughters and a half-day of care for their 6-year-old son.

Even with a significant multi-child discount, it’s equal to their mortgage.

“Every day, you wake up and go, ‘Thank God I still have a job,’ because if one of us for some reason loses our job, we’re sunk,” says Michelle, who is a client specialist at an investment firm.

Michelle and Stephen, a computer programmer, went through their budget item by item and cut out excess spending. They’re delaying bigger-ticket purchases. They use a lot of coupons and eat out less. Michelle knows all of the restaurants that have kids-eat-free nights.

With the help of YouTube and advice from relatives, the husband and wife have also taken on various home repair projects themselves: replacing leaking faucets and toilets, weatherproofing all their windows.

It is a comfort at night when you can go to bed and say, OK, at least I know I can afford my house, my kids in a safe place, the utilities and groceries. Everything else? Not that important.

Michelle Chester, Ohio mother of three

Even though they’ve made a lot of cuts, Michelle says there is still plenty of day-to-day juggling.

“It’s a challenge, and really, the tax credit that the government gives us … it’s the same as it was in the 1980s,” she says. “And there’s no way we’re paying the same for child care for now that we were paying back in the 1980s.”

Michelle is referring to Flexible Spending Accounts for dependent care, which allow employees to set aside pre-tax money from their monthly paychecks for child care for children younger than 13. Those contributions are limited to $5,000 annually — and have been since 1986. Compare that to average weekly child care costs, which have risen nearly 70 percent from 1985 to 2011, the most recent data available from the Census Bureau.

“When you think about it, $5,000 a year, we spend in the first quarter,” she says.

And so far, congressional efforts to increase the limit — and to index dependent care to inflation — have gone nowhere.

Michelle and Stephen also discussed the possibility of one parent staying home. They sat down and ran the numbers when they found out they were having twins.

“If it were just day care, I would stay home,” she says. “But because I also cover groceries, my car and a little bit of the utilities, I can’t afford to. It wouldn’t make sense for us.”

There’s regret in Michelle’s voice when she discusses how little she and her husband are saving. The silver lining is that whatever little they do save, she says, goes into savings accounts they set up for the children.

“That’s just money I don’t want to touch,” she says. “I want to be able to say, OK, this is your money. Kind of like my parents did for me, and my father-in-law and mother-in-law did for my husband, to give them a jumpstart later in life.

Many Americans hope to be able to give their children what their parents gave them; but the stark economic reality is that, in many cases, it simply won’t be possible.

In the meantime, the Chesters have identified points where there costs will go down: when there are no more diapers ($100 less a month), when the twins move into the toddler room at their day care center ($80 less). Each change, as Michelle puts it, “gives us just a little bit more breathing room, and maybe a chance to start adding back to our savings.”

Her advice for other parents who are struggling with child care costs?

“Make a plan and stick to it. Stick to it as much as you can. There’s always going to be something that pops up, but if you’ve got a plan in place, you know how the numbers will fall,” she says. “And it is a comfort at night when you can go to bed and say, OK, at least I know I can afford my house, my kids in a safe place, the utilities and groceries. Everything else? Not that important.

A North Carolina family talks money every month

A lot of families rely on grandparents for child care. For lower-income families, relatives are often the only option. But even for higher-earning families, relatives are a key backup to keeping often-fragile child care arrangements from unraveling.

That’s the case for Brian Hickey of Raleigh, N.C. Even when his children were in full-time center-based care, he says, there were still sick days.

“Thank God my parents were in the area,” he says.

But his parents have lives of their own, and Hickey is wary of taking them for granted.

“Old people used to tell me, don’t wear out your welcome,” the 35-year-old says with a laugh.

Bottom line is that there’s no getting around the financial burden of child care.

“It’s an astronomical cost,” says Hickey, whose children are now 12, 8 and 5.

Managing child care costs is “arguably the most stressful part of my life,” the 35-year-old geotechnical engineer says.

Every month, that’s a conversation in this house. … You have to make your choices. Where are we at, and what can we do to keep moving forward? For us, if you do it frequently, you make better choices. Don’t wait until there’s a problem.

Brian Hickey, N.C. father of three, about speaking frankly about finances

Full-time care for the two younger children cost Hickey and his wife about a quarter of their net monthly income — just $125 more per month than their mortgage payment. The Hickeys are another family who pay well over 10 percent of their income for child care — above the U.S. government standard for affordable care.

On paper, Hickey says, his family’s household earnings — his wife works in retail management — should be enough. But with student loans and child support for his oldest child, Hickey says the reality was that paying for child care was a struggle.

He could have found a cheaper option — but did not want to compromise on quality.

“I didn’t want my kid to be somewhere . .. for 8 hours and not learn anything, not do anything, with no expectations of growth or development,” he says.

And if finding that balance was difficult for the two-parent, middle-class Hickey family, it’s all the more daunting for lower-earning families or single parents.

Hickey says frank conversations about finances and a constant re-evaluation of financial priorities are key ways he and his wife try to keep stress at bay.

“Every month, that’s a conversation in this house. Every month, we sit down,” he says. “You have to make your choices. Where are we at, and what can we do to keep moving forward? For us, if you do it frequently, you make better choices. Don’t wait until there’s a problem.”

Despite the complaints about the cost burden, Hickey echoes other parents when he zeroes in on what truly matters: trustworthy, dependable child care.

“At the end of the day, I can lose my house, my job, my car, you can replace those,” he says. “You can’t replace your kids.

    I have lived here for 2 months, but there is practically nothing to tell about the city. It does not have any sights, no tourists, no beautiful nature and architectural structures. But there are many drug addicts, the unemployed, the homeless and very poor people.

    The only thing that saves this city from hopeless wretchedness (and in this way it is similar to New Haven with Yale University) is the huge Rutgers University College. It is he who attracts a huge number of young and promising people (although after studying they immediately run away from this terrible city).

    I’m posting photos taken by me during 2 months of my stay in this big village. All photos were taken on the go with an iPhone 4s, so there are no high-quality and artistic photos, but you will see the way my eyes saw (though with progressive myopia).

    Like all American cities and villages, there is a downtown (center) with a huge green park, a train station with a Rutgers campus (this is a university city), as well as a huge number of poor and very poor areas.

    I’ll start right from downtown. Central station “Newark Penn Station”. Thanks to him, you can get to Manhattan in 30 minutes. Many people travel to New York for work by this route.

    March: Newark, NJ Part 1

    To the second part of the report

    It’s already hellish spring everywhere, and I was in Newark at the beginning of March, and it was still winter there. Therefore, he looks unattractive and cold. However, even objectively the city is bad. After Newark, New York, which I don’t like, seems like a breath of fresh air.

    There are many reasons for the bad state of Newark. Firstly, New Jersey city real estate taxes: many people who came here in the 70s gradually abandoned their business and rent due to some cruel conditions. Secondly, since Newark is a satellite city of New York, sort of like Zelenograd near Moscow (which for some reason was included in Moscow, although it is 40 km from it), all sorts of rogue people go to work from Newark to NY, of which there are thousands in Newark . It’s a very strange contrast when you go from an intelligent university district (there is one in Newark) to some kind of fierce black ghetto, where everything is filthy and in general.

    But okay, in order. Newark was founded in 1666 by the Puritan leader Robert Treat and for about 100 years was a purely Puritan city that did not accept any denominations other than Calvinism, to which Treat belonged. And then the history of Newark was no different from the history of other American cities. In the 19th century – rapid industrial development, at the beginning of the 20th century – a skyscraper boom, in the second half of the 20th century – a crisis and slight decay, now – a new revival.

    I lived in a good hotel (I can recommend) Robert Treat Hotel of the Best Western chain in the very center of the city, overlooking the Military Park and the central square. From the hotel entrance to the New York World Trade Center 35 minutes by public transport (Path subway). Just do not take breakfast, this dirty trick is still impossible to eat.

    Please note that the right and left wings of the hotel are different. The historical part was built in 1916 year. Hotel with show-offs. At different times, four US presidents lived here – Thomas Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman and John F. Kennedy.

    Eleanor Roosevelt is dedicated to a separate memorial plaque.

    In 1933 and 1939 Albert Einstein held business meetings in the hotel restaurant. There is no memorial plaque, but pamphlets related to this are scattered throughout the hotel. But there is also a board dedicated to Robert Treat. Inside there are paintings in which Treat arranges accommodation on this land with local Indians.

    On the territory of the hotel, but outside, there is some stunning, in my opinion, beautiful female bust. I fell in love right away. She is really alive, it seems that she is about to wake up, and the wind will blow her hair. By the way, this is the work “Compassion” by Don Campbell.

    The first building that catches the eye of the person leaving the hotel is the central concert hall of Newark (and the whole state of New Jersey) – the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. New building, built in 1997.

    Next to the NJPAC is an interesting, obviously ancient arch.

    The fact is that from 1809 to 1889 there was a cemetery at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity (we will see it later), which was later destroyed. Why – I don’t know, it was somehow rolled up in paving stones at the beginning of the century.

    The second building that catches the eye is the former offices of the Fireman’s Insurance Company, built in 1924-1928 by architects Jay and Wilson Ely. For some time it was the tallest building in Newark.

    The principles of “front construction” are very clearly visible here. Regardless of which part of the building is actually visible from the street, there are decorative elements only on the facade facing the street on which the building is listed.

    The red house on the left is not some kind of garbage for you. This is the third oldest residential building in Newark, the so-called Symington House built in 1808. It was originally intended for churchmen who worked in the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, but in 1888 it was bought by a certain Robert Symington, whose name he received.

    And here is the Trinity & St. Philip’s Cathedral, built in 1810. Always had only Trinity, Philip at 1992 dragged. Such a small cathedral.

    Opposite the cathedral is a monument to George Hobart Downe (1830-1905), rector of St. Patrick’s Cathedral (we will see him later). However, he seems to have worked in all the Newark churches.

    Little Theater building. It is strange that it is not abandoned – I counted about 5 abandoned theaters in Newark. In general, this is not a theatre. This is a cinema. And, judging by the poster, he shows mostly porn, and in the daytime. No kidding. But in the city center and in a historic building. And on the second floor there is a department of gay porn. It’s not a joke either.

    We are already almost on the main square of the city, in Washington Park.

    Washington Park is such a compact collection of all (well, almost) monuments of Newark. That is, when a new monument needs to be erected, it is erected here. At least that’s how it feels. Some photos were taken on the day of departure, 2 weeks after the first, the snow had already melted.

    Let’s take a look first at the statues in the park, then at the buildings around the park. The first Academy in Newark was located on this site in 1774-1780. On January 25, 1780, during the American War of Independence, British troops crossed the ice from the already captured New York and took Newark, burning the academy to the ground along the way. The new building was built in 1792 years already in another place.

    Of course, there should be a monument to a peasant with a horse. Without this, the park is not a park. It’s in every city in the world, I think.

    Monument to Don Luis Munoz Rivera (1859-1916), Puerto Rican poet and journalist. And the governor of Puerto Rico. What it has to do with Newark, I don’t know.

    Monument to Seth Boyden (1788-1870), famous inventor. In Newark, he worked as a watchmaker. Boyden invented a number of technological processes and solutions for working with leather and metal, and also became one of the first (more precisely, the second) American daguerreotype photographer. Signatures under American monuments are very cool – they usually have a detailed biography of a character with all his achievements.

    Monument to Abraham Coles (1813-1891), American physicist, writer, translator. He lived here for some time.

    Monument to José Gervasio Artegas (1764-1850), hero of the national liberation struggle in South America and founder of Uruguay. In Newark he appeared on some kind of cultural exchange with Montevideo.

    Great little Free Library project. A very neat display of books. You can take, you can put. Judging, however, by the contingent and crowding of the booth, no one reads books in Newark. Even the students had difficulty explaining to me where one of the two bookstores in the city was located. Very pathetic, by the way.

    In 1795, this crossroads appeared – a road was built here from New York, building a bridge over one of the rivers (through which, I don’t remember, a thousand of them). In honor of this, there is a lantern with images of Robert Treat and an Indian.

    Now for the buildings. Around the park – solid just sights. For example, John Ballantine House. Built in 1885 by order of John Ballantyne, son of the founder of the famous brewery Peter Ballantyne.

    Here is the First Baptist Peddie Memorial Church, built in 1888. It looks like such a monumental stone, in fact – a brick box, very beautifully lined with two facades.

    The mighty, simply crushing building is the former office of the Bell Telephone Company (New Jersey Bell Headquarters Building). Built in 1923 by Ralph Thomas Walker. In general, if you look at Walker’s work, you can immediately see the handwriting – monumental, gloomy massiveness.

    Would you like to buy a church on the main square of the city? Second Presbyterian Church, built in 1886, rebuilt after a fire in 1930. It was already sold in 2003, either no one bought it, or the new owner decided to resell it again.

    Right next to the church is the American Insurance Company Building. Built in 1930, the eighth tallest building in the city. I really like this type – when a neoclassical base, and above it – a building of a simpler type.

    Another little church lost between modern buildings. Northern Reformed Church, built 1857.

    I really like the abundance of details on the facades of American buildings. Moreover, the details are very neat – not like our Tajiks, they just stupidly pour paint over the equilibria of Stalinist architecture.

    You can clearly see which box is hidden under the outer body kit: the technical facade is also visible from everywhere.

    But the most famous building complex in the Washington Park area is the Newark Museum complex. Of course, it is small compared to New York museums, but for New Jersey it is quite cool. This is the main building, built in the 1920s according to the project of Jarvis Hunt with the money of the philanthropist Louis Bamberger. The exposition of the museum is large, but standard – modern (mostly American) art, Buddhists, Egypt, well, like everywhere else.

    This is the southern building, built later, in the 30s, I think. Traditionally, the sidewall is clumsy. And in front of the second technical facade, a small museum park was laid out.

    That’s it, we took a walk here. Now let’s go a little in the other direction and look at the Military Park, which is located near the hotel – this is the second, in fact, the center of the city.

    Unfortunately, I’m out of luck. When I was in Newark, Military Park was under renovation and tightly fenced off. Therefore, all pictures of the insides are taken through the slits in the grid. They promised to finish in 2013, but nothing happened.

    Flag-s. From 1667 to 1869 this place was a training ground for soldiers, since 1869 a public park.

    Guns.

    Looks great. In the foreground is a bust of Kennedy by Jacques Lipchitz (by the way, he was born near Grodno and studied in Vilna), erected at 1965 year. In the background is the Military Park Building, built in 1926 and for four years was the tallest building in New Jersey.

    The central monument of the park is the composition Wars of America (“American Wars”), created by the famous sculptor John Gutson Borglum in 1926. If you don’t know who this is, shame on you. For it was Borglum who designed the famous heads of presidents carved into the rock (Rushmore Memorial) – this was the pinnacle of his career.

    Another monument is to Frederick Theodor Frelinghuiser (1817-1885), an American politician, a native of New Jersey and the 29th US Secretary of State.

    There is also a monument to Major General Philip Kearney (1815-1862), a hero of the American-Mexican War and the Civil War, in the park. But he is very far away, behind the fence and is visible only from the back. So forgive me.

    Between the Military Park Building and my hotel is the New Jersey Historical Society. The building was built in 1926 as the Essex Club.

    That’s it, we ran through the Military Park and around it. Let’s move on. Let’s just wander around the city center.

    All sorts of houses.

    155 Washington skyscraper, very strange. There are few windows, brick, green – these are copper inserts with bas-reliefs. Built in 1930 year.

    Right – Prudential Building, built in 1942 as the office of the ministry, dealing with the problems of military families. The inscription Rutgers on the lanterns is the designation of the border of the university district (the university itself is called Rutgers and is one of the best in New Jersey).

    This massive thing is Newark’s tallest skyscraper (142 m), the National Newark Building. Designed by John and Wilson Ely in 1931, classic American Art Deco.

    The second skyscraper is called Eleven 80. Built in 1930 and a whole year – before the construction of the National Newark Building – was the tallest in the city.

    These two healthy things are visible from absolutely everywhere, it is very convenient to navigate by them.

    Well, let’s wander around the center a little more.

    A powerful but relatively squat building – 153 Halsey Street, also known as the Gibraltar Building, built in 1927 in the neo-gothic style, mixed with neoclassicism and even the hell with it, designed by Cass Gilbert.

    In general, downtown Newark is quite typical, only rather dirty and unkempt. There are many small streets with beautiful facades that you can’t see.

    As in New York, there is a shortage of parking. American temporary multi-storey parking lots in vacant lots are very unaesthetic, but what can you do. Better than in Moscow on all sidewalks.

    To be honest, I don’t remember at all what kind of building it is. Looks like the 1910s.

    However, in addition to the historical ones, Newark has a lot of modern glass skyscrapers. I didn’t take them off, they are all the same.

    Here’s another brilliant example of façade development. A box turned into an ancient temple with a slight movement of the hand. The building is called Beaver Mansion.

    Actually, this is suddenly a black area, right next to downtown. Full of either abandoned buildings, or just abandoned offices in separate buildings.

    Child Care Worker’s Permit

    The Child Care Worker’s Permit is required for all persons who own a child care center, or whose work involves caring for children. Permits are obtained by attending a 2-hour training class on child care safety and sanitation, food safety, and communicable disease prevention. The Child Care Worker’s Training and Permit is valid for three years.

    Child Care Worker Training may be obtained online or through an approved Child Care Worker Trainer registered with the City of Arlington.

    For online training, you may contact either of the following resources.

    • iCare Training  (fee includes training only)

    Once you receive your certification from Responsible Training, you will receive your registration afterwards from the City of Arlington.  Once you receive your certification from iCare Training, you will need to register your certification at ArlingtonPermits.com.

    Child Care Center Directors who are licensed by the State of Texas may give this training to their Child Care Center Workers. To do so, they must register with the City of Arlington by submitting a copy of their State Certification and a copy of their course curriculum for approval by the City of Arlington’s Health Division. Class must be at least two (2) hours in length. Curriculum must include training in the following area:

    • Classroom Management -Child/Worker ratio requirements, classroom management (discipline & guidance practices) and supervisory requirements.
    • Basic food service if food is prepared and served on-site. State required temperatures and related procedures for cooking, holding, cool down, serving and storage of foods. Utensil washing and sanitizing of utensils and equipment.
    • Basic food service only if snacks are provided from an approved source and served on-site; storage and serving requirements.
    • Effective worker and child hand washing techniques.
    • Proper sanitation of sippy cups, toys, table surfaces, etc.
    • Recognizing common childhood illnesses and understanding of exclusion requirements.
    • Emergency -Policy for handling emergencies, evacuation and relocation plans.
    • Proper steps in diaper changing.
    • Playground -recognizing hazards.
    • Recognizing abuse and neglect.

    Bloom’s Taxonomy of Learning Domains: The Cognitive Domain

    Bloom’s Taxonomy was created in 1956 under the leadership of educational psychologist Dr Benjamin Bloom in order to promote higher forms of thinking in education, such as analyzing and evaluating concepts, processes, procedures, and principles, rather than just remembering facts (rote learning). It is most often used when designing educational, training, and learning processes.

    The Three Domains of Learning

    The committee identified three domains of educational activities or learning (Bloom, et al. 1956):

    • Cognitive: mental skills (knowledge)

    • Affective: growth in feelings or emotional areas (attitude or self)

    • Psychomotor: manual or physical skills (skills)

    Since the work was produced by higher education, the words tend to be a little bigger than we normally use. Domains may be thought of as categories. Instructional designers, trainers, and educators often refer to these three categories as KSA (Knowledge [cognitive], Skills [psychomotor], and Attitudes [affective]). This taxonomy of learning behaviors may be thought of as “the goals of the learning process.” That is, after a learning episode, the learner should have acquired a new skill, knowledge, and/or attitude.

    While the committee produced an elaborate compilation for the cognitive and affective domains, they omitted the psychomotor domain. Their explanation for this oversight was that they have little experience in teaching manual skills within the college level. However, there have been at least three psychomotor models created by other researchers.

    Their compilation divides the three domains into subdivisions, starting from the simplest cognitive process or behavior to the most complex. The divisions outlined are not absolutes and there are other systems or hierarchies that have been devised, such as the Structure of Observed Learning Outcome (SOLO). However, Bloom’s taxonomy is easily understood and is probably the most widely applied one in use today.

    Cognitive Domain

    The cognitive domain involves knowledge and the development of intellectual skills (Bloom, 1956). This includes the recall or recognition of specific facts, procedural patterns, and concepts that serve in the development of intellectual abilities and skills. There are six major categories of cognitive an processes, starting from the simplest to the most complex (see the table below for an in-depth coverage of each category):

    • Knowledge
    • Comprehension
    • Application
    • Analysis
    • Synthesis
    • Evaluation

    The categories can be thought of as degrees of difficulties. That is, the first ones must normally be mastered before the next one can take place.

    Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy

    Lorin Anderson, a former student of Bloom, and David Krathwohl revisited the cognitive domain in the mid-nineties and made some changes, with perhaps the three most prominent ones being (Anderson, Krathwohl, Airasian, Cruikshank, Mayer, Pintrich, Raths, Wittrock, 2000):

    • changing the names in the six categories from noun to verb forms
    • rearranging them as shown in the chart below
    • creating a processes and levels of knowledge matrix

    Creating: Builds a structure or pattern from diverse elements. Put parts

    Examples: Write a company operations or process manual. Design a machine to
    perform a specific task. Integrates training from several sources to solve a
    problem. Revises and process to improve the outcome.

    Cognitive Processes and Levels of Knowledge Matrix

    Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy not only improved the usability of it by using action words, but added a cognitive and knowledge matrix.

    While Bloom’s original cognitive taxonomy did mention three levels of knowledge or products that could be processed, they were not discussed very much and remained one-dimensional:

    • Factual – The basic elements students must know to be acquainted with a discipline or solve problems.
    • Conceptual – The interrelationships among the basic elements within a larger structure that enable them to function together.
    • Procedural – How to do something, methods of inquiry, and criteria for using skills, algorithms, techniques, and methods.

    In Krathwohl and Anderson’s revised version, the authors combine the cognitive processes with the above three levels of knowledge to form a matrix. In addition, they added another level of knowledge – metacognition:

    • Metacognitive – Knowledge of cognition in general, as well as awareness and knowledge of one’s own cognition. 

    When the cognitive and knowledge dimensions are arranged in a matrix, as shown below, it makes a nice performance aid for creating performance objectives:

    However, others have identified five contents or artifacts (Clark, Chopeta, 2004; Clark, Mayer, 2007):

    • Facts – Specific and unique data or instance.
    • Concepts – A class of items, words, or ideas that are known by a common name, includes multiple specific examples, shares common features. There are two types of concepts: concrete and abstract.
    • Processes – A flow of events or activities that describe how things work rather than how to do things. There are normally two types: business processes that describe work flows and technical processes that describe how things work in equipment or nature. They may be thought of as the big picture, of how something works.
    • Procedures – A series of step-by-step actions and decisions that result in the achievement of a task. There are two types of actions: linear and branched.
    • Principles – Guidelines, rules, and parameters that govern. It includes not only what should be done, but also what should not be done. Principles allow one to make predictions and draw implications. Given an effect, one can infer the cause of a phenomena. Principles are the basic building blocks of causal models or theoretical models (theories).

    Thus, the new matrix would look similar to this:

    Cognitive research

    Brain exercises are becoming more and more common for us every time. This comes from the fact that the more scientists learn about the functioning of the brain, the more we become aware of the importance of keeping our brain healthy as well as our body. And speaking of how the aging process affects the brain, there is good news and bad news.

    The idea that aging leads to mental deterioration is not a recent discovery of cognitive research. As William Shakespeare wrote in his play ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ (‘Much Ado About Nothing’), “When age comes, intelligence goes.” The good news is that a recent study showed that this idea is not entirely correct. Today’s discovery suggests that the brain is a flexible and renewing organ and, despite age, can maintain and even improve its level of productivity, especially if a person leads an active and mentally stimulating lifestyle. nine0003

    And then what is the bad news? Like everything in life, brain exercises require some effort. It is clear that our brain is not stupid at all, and since in our daily life there are many things that are repeated over and over again, the brain, being a highly efficient information processor, creates direct access to conduct these constantly repetitive cognitive tasks.

    For example, when you learned to drive a car, it may be difficult at the beginning to carry on a conversation and drive at the same time because your brain has been busy processing new stimuli and running the cognitive tasks required to complete the driving process. And when you have already gained some driving experience, let’s say become an experienced driver, it becomes much easier for you to carry on a conversation with passengers, enjoy the scenery and drive a car, and do it all at the same time. nine0003

    Naturally, it is good that many of the cognitive tasks in the process of driving become automatic, because. it allows your brain to divert attention and direct resources to other things. However, if you look ahead in time, this can create a lot of problems, because. the brain’s natural need to acquire new experiences and create a template for easier processing of daily information leads the brain to become lazy and less productive. With aging, this problem becomes more and more serious, because. it becomes more difficult to develop the performance of new activities that will give the brain a shake-up and pull it out of this lethargic state of automated life. For this very reason, execution plays a very important role for the brain. nine0003

    Exercises for the brain in a way, like exercise. Just like your muscles, your brain needs constant exercise in order to stay fit and healthy. Many people think that doing sudoku, doing crossword puzzles, or playing bridge is good brain exercise. It is clear that this is better than doing nothing and it is true that these activities can help keep the brain in good shape, but if the same kind of brain exercises are constantly repeated, they will also turn into something ordinary and will no longer be train appropriately all the necessary attributes to maintain brain health and good physical health in general. The true key to optimal exercise for the mind, in order to constantly exercise all areas of the brain, is to do as many new and different cognitive activities as possible. This level of fitness requires a more complete and brain-training program. nine0003

    The reason for this is that cognition is made up of different attributes working together. These include memory (your ability to remember and retrieve information), attention (your ability to focus on one or more tasks), perception (how well you perceive various stimuli from your environment), and hand-eye coordination (how well you translate visual information into body movements). Since we are all unique, single individuals, the type of exercise you will need will be different from the exercise for other people. So the most ideal mind training program is one that recognizes your strengths and weaknesses and creates a set of exercises specifically for you that will give you exactly the workout you need to keep your brain active and healthy. nine0003

    COGNITIVE SCIENCE, explores the cognitive (cognitive) processes of the brain functioning and the mechanisms of behavior regulation in humans and animals. K. n. includes a number of areas of psychology (primarily cognitive psychology), computer science (especially development in the field of artificial intelligence, computer vision and neural networks), linguistics (cognitive linguistics), philosophy, neurophysiology, anthropology and other sciences, being, like natural philosophy , a large-scale attempt to create a unified science about the relationship between nature and human thinking. A distinctive feature of the cognitive approach is the emphasis on the decisive role of knowledge in the regulation of behavior. Knowledge is understood as internal representations (mental models) of the environment and the organism itself, which can be both conscious (explicit) and unconscious (implicit). The word “cognitive” in a narrow sense refers to the processes of acquiring, storing and using knowledge.     The term “K. n.” appeared in the 1970s; the first conference on K. n. took place in 1979 in San Diego (USA).     23 Preschool Music Lesson Plans And Activities (2023) – Dynamic Music Room

    Teaching music to young children is a great way to start a student’s love of music early on.

    Most people really struggle with this age group, but when you come armed with some great preschool music lesson plans and activities.

    So I sorted through my favorite music lessons to share with you.

    Note: You don’t have to be a music teacher to use these either. Preschool teachers can use these too.

    Peas Porridge Hot

    This simple chant has been around for literal centuries, and it’s one of the first action songs I teach my preschool students.

    The words go like this:

    Peas porridge hot. (Ah!)

    Peas porridge cold. (Br!)

    Peas porridge in the pot

    Nine days old. 

    Some like it hot. (Ah!)

    Some like it cold. (Br!)

    Some like it in the pot

    Nine days old. 

    With this chant, I like to have them practice the steady beat on different body parts.

    Body percussion is the best way to reinforce the steady beat at this age.

    Percussion instruments are great, but the students get too distracted right away for real practice.

    Do a little bit of moving every time, and then hand out instruments.

    (Really, any of the nursery rhymes will do a great job in preschool.)

    The Ants Go Marching One By One

    When it comes to movement activities in preschool, we really want the kids to do two main things:

    • Move to the steady beat
    • Move freely, matching the feeling of the music

    Of these, the most important thing, in my opinion, is keeping a beat.

    This song is one that most people have heard of, and it’s great for steady beat movement.

    March around the room while singing or listening to this song.

    As a bonus, it’s appropriate for the preschool grade level, too, as it features counting.

    The Crabfish

    The Crabfish is a great songbook with a haunting melody.

    Either sing the folk song and book yourself or listen to it and follow along with the recording at the link.

    Or better yet, do both!

    This is one of my favorite songs to do with any level, and it’s a regular in my preschool classroom.

    Johnny Works With One Hammer

    Movement games where we add in more moves, taking a simple song and making it even more fun for music time is always a blast.

    This song adds in motions and works on gross motor skills.

    It’s silly, and the kids love it.

    Shake And Shake And Freeze

    Here is a game with a bit more practice on fine motor skills for preschool on top of the musical skills we work on.

    Listen and move to the video first, and then break out the egg shakers.

    Egg shakers (or shaker eggs, as they’re sometimes called), for those who don’t know, are plastic eggs with little beads inside, just like maracas.

    Found Sound Band

    I love doing Found Sound Bands.

    I take a simple song and add a steady beat.

    Then, I show them how we don’t need “real” instruments to keep the beat.

    We can use a lot of different sounds to make a unique band. 

    After setting a few safety ground rules, let kids explore and find their own ways to make music and play different instruments.

    This is always a favorite from 3 year olds to 10 year olds! 

    Herman The Worm

    Sometimes, you just have to be silly. 

    A lot of preschool music is creating fun, musical experiences where the students can hear different types of music and practice the steady beat. 

    Herman the Worm is just another example of this (with emphasis on the silly part!).  

    Check out the video and learn it yourself to sing with them. 

    You may want to slow it down a bit when you teach it to them the first time. 

    Aquarium Movement From Carnival Of The Animals

    Classical music and expressive movement shouldn’t be ignored. 

    Aquarium from Carnival of the Animals is one of the perfect pieces for this age level. 

    It’s short enough that it’ll hold their attention, and there are enough changes in the song to make the movement go well.

    Mother Goony Bird

    I decided to bookend the previous preschool music lesson with two silly activities, I guess! 

    This silly song is similar to Johnny Works With One Hammer.  

    We move to a steady beat and keep adding moves until we look pretty silly. 

    Bumping Up And Down In My Little Red Wagon

    Maybe it’s just music teachers from my generation, or maybe it’s just me, but I love Raffi. 

    His fun songs and shows for kids were part of why I wanted to become a music teacher. 

    This song is one of my favorites of all the ones he’s done. 

    You get to bump up and down and invite students to pick different tools (or silly things) to use for movement prompts in practicing the steady beat as we fix the wagon. 

    Marching Band Follow The Leader

    Following the leader is another great way to engage the body while moving to music. 

    I’m a marching band fan myself, so it’s no surprise one of my go-to’s is to pop on a standard march and lead the kids around the room. 

    Give them egg shakers, rhythm sticks, or hand drums if you feel brave. 

    I usually come with different beat motions for the first few times we play before adding in the non-pitched percussion.

    One of my favorite marches to do this with is the Stars And Stripes Forever.  

    Pro-tip: Stick with easy moves for a while first (patting, tapping nose, touching the head) before doing harder ones like crossing the midline (great for brain development). 

    Did you know that following the leader requires students to focus on one person? (Duh!)

    This helps a lot with social skills too.

    Little Bunny Foo Foo

    Little Bunny Foo Foo is a classic finger play activity with a great steady beat. 

    After the students know it really well, I like to extend the learning in a couple of different ways: 

    1. Acting out the story
    2. Adding instruments to match parts of the story
    3. Playing the steady beat while singing
    4. Watching/reading other variations and discussing how they’re the same and different. 

    Apples And Bananas

    Who doesn’t love this song with preschoolers?

    It’s so much fun! 

    Plus, you get to practice some good vowel sounds.  

    Any time we can get cross-curricular with important concepts like speech and letter sounds is a big deal with this age group. 

    B-I-N-G-O

    When I was first teaching, I remember standing with one of my pre-K teachers in the hall as her kids took a bathroom break. 

    Those waiting in line were a little impatient about how long another one of their friends was taking. 

    I jokingly said: “Well, these preschoolers don’t have a lot of patience, do they?”

    She looked at me deadpanned and responded: “That’s the understatement of the century!”

    In music, we can help develop self-control and patience through songs that require focus and waiting. 

    B-I-N-G-O removes a letter each time on the chorus, forcing the students’ brains to wait for the spot where those words would be. 

    Bonus: It also prepares them for learning quarter rest faster in their older grades. 

    Hokey Pokey

    Fine motor control and knowledge of body parts are two of the key elements of preschool education.  

    And this song hits both of these in spades! 

    Play this song for maximum fun and learning with music.

    10 In The Bed

    Counting backward is almost as important as counting forward, and doing it with a song helps the students learn it even faster! 

    There’s a reason there are so many catchy kid songs and music activities that help them learn better. 

    We’re On Our Way

    This is a fun one I like to use as we’re getting closer to a holiday. 

    Even if they’re not going anywhere for a break, the students can still sing about the stuff they’ll find at home. 

    It provides a great chance to get to know the kids when you only see them for a limited amount of time. 

    Musical Coloring

    Art and music go together really well. 

    Whether you tell students to simply color what they feel or tell them a story to draw while music plays, musical coloring is a slam dunk in terms of creativity and listening. 

    Classical music works best here, especially if it has a clear feeling to it.

    Name That Tune

    For Name That Tune, you’ll want to make a playlist of kids’ songs they know well (Disney songs, for example) or learn how to play them yourself on an instrument such as the recorder or piano. 

    Then, give them a hint of the song or play it without words to have them guess what it is. 

    Split into teams or keep track of how many they got right to keep it even more interesting. 

    Pro-tip: Make your last tune the next one you want to sing or play with on your preschool music lesson plan. 

    Build Your Own Musical Instruments

    Building your own musical instruments is a big undertaking, but it’s one a lot of people love to do. 

    I’ll admit I don’t have much experience in this, so I’ll link you to this article for specific ideas on building DIY instruments. 

    Freeze Dance

    Freeze Dance is always a blast. 

    Put on a song they know and tell them to dance.  

    Give them specific dance moves if they don’t have ideas for how to move on their own. 

    Then, pause the song regularly to “trick them.”

    When the song pauses, they have to freeze.

    Some people make it a competition and make those who don’t stop fast enough sit out.

    I don’t always do that, but if I do, I’ll also let everyone back in after a minute of sitting out.

    Scarf Dancing

    Getting out fabric scarves and adding them to your movement refreshes the same activities you did before, but now it feels new to your kids. 

    Do this with classical music or songs that have a motion to them. 

    Check out my dancing with scarves lesson plan template for help in organizing and teaching with these. 

    Trust me, adding onto activities with scarves is a lot easier on your lesson planning than always coming up with new stuff.

    Online Music Games (PBS Kids)

    If you have access to technology, it may not be a bad idea to offer them some time (on occasion) to explore music games.  

    I don’t like to use too much of this as it’s nowhere near as good as making actual music. 

    But if you show them certain games on PBS Kids or Chrome Music Lab, they can explore more at home too!

    Music is one of the most powerful gifts in the universe.

    • It has the power to make us feel.
    • It can calm and relax us.
    • It can make us happy or sad.
    • Music can inspire, encourage, and unite us.
    • It can get us through challenging times.
    • And it has the ability to take us back in time to a memory.

    Listening, singing, and dancing to music brings us joy.

    Throughout this pandemic, amateur and famous musicians have shared their live music via social media to entertain us. DJs have hosted virtual dance parties that have gotten us up and moving in our living rooms. This is an awesome time to use music in your virtual classroom or in your home to get the “feel goods” and to help teach children important concepts.

    Music and movement are particularly powerful for the cognitive, social-emotional, and sensory motor development of preschoolers.

    Here are 12 preschool music activities to help your preschoolers have fun as they learn important foundational skills.

    1. Build community while teaching name and letter recognition.

      Morning meeting or circle time is a great way to greet children and get the day started whether you are in your brick and mortar classroom or teaching class virtually.

      Children learn to recognize letters in their name and the names of their friends as they sing “I Am Happy to See You.” As you insert children’s names into the song, be sure to hold up their written name so that students can see the letters.

      Be sure to ask students if they know any of the letters or if they have similar letters in their own name. Try their name in all capitals first and then move to title case. Learning Without Tears has also translated all of our song lyrics to Spanish. “I Am Happy to See You” is also recorded in Spanish on the Sing, Sound, and Count with Me music album.
       

    2. Have fun teaching children to imitate and follow directions.

      Learning how to imitate and follow directions are important skills that will follow preschoolers into their careers. Our Get Set for School Sing Along music album has lots of songs that encourage children to imitate and follow directions.

      The “Wood Piece Pokey” is a fun song that has children using their gross motor skills to imitate their teacher’s or families’ movements. They learn important position words and the names of the wood pieces so they can later build letters successfully.

    3. Help children learn body parts and develop strong drawing and cognitive skills.

      Mat Man is a beloved character who helps children learn body parts as they build him while singing the “Mat Man” song. After children sing and build, they are better able to draw a person.

      Have fun adding other body parts and lyrics as children become more creative. Dress up Mat Man to help children learn the seasons as well as important holidays. Children can also build Mat Man electronically on the Build Mat Man Game.

    4. Teach and reinforce fine motor skills as children learn how to properly hold a crayon.

      What better way to teach children crayon grip than with a song? The “Crayon Song” teaches children to hold the crayon with a tripod grip by telling them exactly where to place their fingers. Children have fun dropping it and picking it up, which helps to solidify proper grip. Crayon grip is a great way for parents and teachers to partner.

    5. Build fine motor skills as you increase math awareness.

      Fingerplays are an awesome way to help build fine motor skills. Learning Without Tears has several fingerplays.

      One popular fingerplay is “Five Little Fingers.” Be sure to have students imitate you as you follow the directions in the song. Children learn how to count and begin to develop one to one correspondence.
       

    6. Enjoy counting and learning one to one correspondence.

      “Counting, Counting” is a great song to get students moving as they learn to clap and stomp their numbers. Add different movements like hopping or jumping as your children learn to count higher and higher. Also, have children count physical objects like counters, toys, or crayons.
       

    7. Support children as they learn to recognize shapes and their characteristics.

      Enjoy country music sounds as children sing the “Shape Song.” Children will learn to identify shapes as they learn the characteristics of each shape. Have children hold up the shape and identify the characteristics as they sing. Encourage children to build shapes, draw shapes, and even identify shapes in their environment.
       

    8. Reinforce alphabet knowledge.

      Do your children know the entire ABC song? Do they have an LMNOP problem? If so, we have a solution. It’s called the “Alphabet Song” and it slows down the traditional ABC song just enough to encourage children to say each letter.

      Another popular Learning Without Tears song that solves the LMNOP issue is “Inside, Outside.” It teaches children how to use their inside and outside voices while they learn their letters. In addition to singing the letters, make sure that students can identify the letters as they sing.

      Parents, want to have your children moving and learning? Write capital letters and lowercase letters on construction paper and place them around your home. Say the letter name or sound and have children hop, skip, or jump to the correct letter.
       

    9. Have fun with rhyming words.

      Rhyming is an important phonological awareness skill where children are asked to identify the ending sound of words that have the same sound.

      “Rhyming Riddles” is a fun song that gives children an opportunity to solve a riddle by identifying a rhyming word. Learning Without Tears has animated “Rhyming Riddles” in the Pre-K Interactive Teaching Tool. Children will enjoy seeing the words come to life, especially the dog driving the car.

      Read nursery rhymes and have children rhyme words using real and nonsense words.
       

    10. Help children learn to love breaking up words into syllables.

      Harness your inner drill sergeant as you sing “Syllable Soundoff.” Children will love breaking words apart and putting them back together. This is a great song to get children up and moving.

      Start with two syllables and then move to three and so on. Have children clap out and stomp out letters. Also have children break apart the syllables using their body parts like in this cool syllable animation.

       

    11. Build good letter formation habits.

      Capital letters are easier for children to learn to write than lowercase letters. One reason capital letters are easier is because they all have the same starting position. All capitals letters start at the top.

      We help to reinforce this important skill by singing one of signature songs, “Where Do You Start Your Letters?” This song starts out slow and crescendos into a cool rock song that will get you off of your feet. Children will learn important position words to prepare them to write letters.

       

    12. Enjoy teaching children about different careers.

      Children will learn all about different occupations as they sing and move to “Ballet Dancing Truck Driver.” Have children act out a motion for each career in this whimsical song. Ask children what they want to be when they grow up.

      Expand on this activity by reading Mat Man Hats and learning about additional careers.

     

    Music is a great way to connect school and home.

    Teachers, be sure to share lyrics with families so they can reinforce skills at home. Music is a powerful teaching tool for preschoolers. Use music to help foster a love of learning as children develop cognitive, social-emotional, sensory motor, and school readiness skills.     Forms and methods of conducting music lessons (non-standard lessons).

    Music lessons occupy a special place in the educational process. The music lesson is the main form of organizing musical education at school, which includes various types of musical activities. For a music lesson, a special emotional atmosphere is needed, which is quite natural for an art lesson, which it is. Despite the common features, each lesson is distinguished by originality and uniqueness. Thinking over the emotional drawing of the lesson, the transition from one work to another, it is necessary to strive to maintain the emotional mood, to find methods for switching the attention of the student. In my opinion, a music lesson in itself is already non-standard and very different from lessons in other disciplines. nine0003

    When conducting non-standard music lessons, I try to follow the developed recommendations:

    – non-standard lessons should be conducted as final ones when summarizing and consolidating the knowledge, skills and abilities of students;

    – too frequent recourse to such forms of organization of the educational process is inappropriate, because this can lead to a loss of sustainable interest in the subject and the learning process;

    – a non-traditional lesson should be preceded by careful preparation and, first of all, the development of a system of specific goals for training and education; nine0003

    -when choosing the forms of non-traditional lessons, the teacher needs to take into account the peculiarities of his character and temperament, the level of preparedness and the specific features of the class as a whole and individual students;

    – when conducting non-standard lessons, it is necessary to be guided by the principle “with children and for children”, setting one of the main goals of educating students in an atmosphere of kindness, creativity and joy.

    In my practice, a peculiar system of non-traditional music lessons, forms and methods of conducting such lessons has developed:

    1. Lesson – concert

    A kind of generalizing lesson at the end of the year. Its purpose is to demonstrate the level of musical culture of students achieved during the academic year. The lesson-concert must be held in a solemn atmosphere. At the lesson-concert, works of a variety of character and content, learned by schoolchildren during the year, should be presented. This is music for choral and solo singing (folk, classical and modern) including musical-rhythmic movements. nine0003

    The lesson ends with the performance of a song together with parents. This always causes a special uplift, inspiration, which is so important for the concert lesson as a whole.

    2. Lesson – game

    The motto of the non-standard lesson is “Where the kids are, there is the game!”. And the main task is to excite, maintain a keen interest in learning, educate and develop while playing. A game is a type of activity in situations aimed at recreating and assimilating social experience, in which self-management of behavior is formed and improved. The game allows the student, being included in the game situation, to experience vivid emotional experiences of success or failure. Also, children and adolescents in the process of playing develop the abilities necessary in the field of business and social relations – take the initiative, set and solve a problem, plan activities, solve communication problems; learn independence, cooperativeness, tolerance, a sense of camaraderie and partnership, learn to conduct a dialogue, to compromise. The game also contributes to the development of the individual, forming such qualities as self-confidence, initiative, and the desire for creativity. Educational games provide an opportunity to get to know the surrounding reality more deeply, immerse yourself in the profession, situation, etc.

    Role play is the main form of play activity in which participants take on the roles of adults, or official, or social roles and, in a specially created game situation, recreate the activities of people and the relationship between them.

    3. Lesson – test

    The test performs not only a controlling function, but also its main purpose – to systematize and summarize the material on a topic or section, to clarify knowledge on basic issues. For credit, you can use the final lessons, lessons of generalizing repetition or lessons of control and testing of knowledge, skills and abilities. nine0003

    4. Lesson – travel

    (“Sea voyage” “Journey in a time machine”)

    1. Binary lesson (Integrated)

    (a lesson that combines music with any other subject: music and literature, foreign language) – “Landscape in music. Images of nature in the works of musicians” (music and art), “Round dance. Round dance constructions “Polka Dance” (music and rhythm)

    1. Lesson – a fairy tale (“Teremok” fairy tale)

    7. Lesson-seminar.

    A seminar is one type of lesson.

    The purpose of the seminar: a more in-depth independent study of the issue, topic, problem of the subject, mastering the scientific-theoretical and constructive methodology. In a school setting, a seminar is one of the main types of practical training, consisting in the discussion by students of messages, reports, abstracts, presentations made based on the results of independent research, experience, and evidence. (“Balalaika. History of the instrument” “Musical alphabet”) For students, the most important thing is the preparation of a report, an abstract; It is good for a teacher to prepare and conduct seminars. On the same topic or question, not one, but two or three abstracts, reports can be provided. One for hearing, most fully revealing the topic, a question. And the authors of other abstracts on this issue can come up with an addition. nine0003

    8. Lesson-research:

    Lesson-research is the activity of students and the teacher, associated with the solution by students (with the support of the teacher) of a creative, research task (with a result known in advance, but not familiar to the students), limited by the time frame of the lesson and involving the presence of the main stages characteristic of research in the scientific field: The main goal of the lesson-research is the acquisition by students of the functional skill of research as a universal way of obtaining new solid knowledge (knowledge is obtained independently and therefore is personally significant, and therefore strong), the development of a research type of thinking, activation of the student’s personal position in the educational process. Thus, the result of a research lesson should be an intellectual, creative product (knowledge) that establishes the truth as a result of the research procedure. nine0003

    “My favorite composer”. Research lessons are a progressive form of non-traditional activities that open up in young people the ability to generate ideas, conduct scientific research, use interdisciplinary connections and further contribute to the innovative development of science, technology, and culture of our country.

    9. In extracurricular activities:

    Lesson – excursion.

    Excursion – a form of educational work, the peculiarity of which is the implementation of the learning process not in the conditions of the classroom, but in nature, in a museum, on city streets, in parks, in industries, etc., with direct perception of the surrounding world by students. The teacher himself or the guide can conduct the tour, but it is the teacher who will remain the organizer and leader of the cognitive activity of students throughout the event. The method of conducting an excursion depends on the topic, the didactic goal, the age of the students, their development, and also on the object of the excursion. The basis of the excursion technique is a visual demonstration and storytelling. Also, the lesson-excursion should include independent work of students according to the plan: observation, drawing up diagrams, sketches, collecting visual and illustrative material (photography). nine0003

    Lesson-performance “Carols”

    The variety of types of non-standard lessons allows them to be used at all levels of children’s education and in different subjects. And the introduction of new technologies in the educational process – computerization of schools, equipping schools with projectors – allows you to come up with new non-standard lessons.

    Non-standard lessons are better remembered, they are especially good to use in introductory and general lessons. You should not use them all the time, because although they are interesting, in some cases they can be less informative and useful

    Of course, there is no need to transfer the entire educational process to “non-traditional tracks”. It is the traditional lesson that should be the main form of education and upbringing, but it is necessary to diversify the educational process with non-standard activities, because they will help to activate the mental activity of students, develop their creative abilities, and increase motivation for learning. And when teachers conduct open lessons, a non-traditional form of classes will always be advantageous, because it can include game moments, original presentation of material, and various types of collective and group work of students. nine0003
