From white snow to black mountain

“Dad, why don’t I look like you?” Alexander Rog asked his fair-haired giant father, the commander of a military unit, in the past a front-line pilot, as a child. For some reason, my father was gloomy at such questions. Each time he frowned, looked away, and silently ruffled his son’s black hair.

In his youth Alexander studied his passport for a long time. There, the birthplace was the town of Sevlyush, located in the Transcarpathian region, two kilometers from the Hungarian border. Now it is called Vinogradovo. “I could not understand where this record came from,” recalls my interlocutor. – All my childhood was spent in the north of Russia, in military towns: first near Arkhangelsk, where the strategic bomber airfield was located. Then my father was transferred as a commander of a flight unit to the snowy town of Kem in the same region. My father never served in the south, at least he never talked about it, although he was an open person and more than once willingly recalled his military past.

At the bottom of Alexander’s memory there always lurked some, although fragmentary, but extraordinarily vivid memories. They dreamed of a beautiful church with domes, mountains, flowering gardens, a bend in the river, in the coastal thickets of which they were hiding from someone with their younger sister Natasha.

Once, already an adult, Alexander firmly decided to put an end to this tormenting and haunting split. He invited a friend to join him – to go to Vinogradovo.

Traveled with transfers. When we passed Lvov, at one of the stations, a friend remarked in surprise: “The closer we drive, the more people like you.

Several churches were discovered in Vinogradovo. But Alexander unmistakably recognized one of them and the house opposite. Alas, the inhabitants of the house, who bought it in 1956, could not explain who lived here before. They remembered only the surname of the family – Bondar.

But the memory began to wake up. She recognized another huge, now empty house perched on top of the mountain. Entering it, Alexander unmistakably found the room where his and his sister’s beds stood, the window through which he and his younger sister ran away from someone to Tisza, where they hid in the reeds. He also remembered the black mountain – a frozen volcano. Thanks to its ashes left in the ground, Vinogradovo has been famous for centuries for its grapes and wonderful plums.

Local residents explained to the people of Kiev that an orphanage used to be located in an empty building. After much questioning, we managed to find the old man who once directed the orphanage. However, the old man shrugged his shoulders in bewilderment at all questions. When the young men, having said goodbye, went to the gate, he suddenly stopped them and told them what he knew.

He told me only because Alexander’s father, who was related by blood, was a close friend of the director of the orphanage. And the one who adopted them with his sister and raised them, gave his last name, strictly observed the secrecy of adoption, which was not subject to disclosure in the Soviet years. The adoptive parents left their wrong coordinates, and the connection with the past world and blood relatives, if any, was cut off forever by the adoptive children. For Alexander, this happened in the fifth year of his life.

Second birth

It turned out that Alexander’s own father was the rector of the Greek Catholic Church – the one that was miraculously preserved in memory. After his death and the death of his mother, who did not survive her husband much from grief, six of their children were sent to orphanages.

Alexander soon found his newfound brothers and sisters. They reported that one of the relatives even had a will written by the father for the youngest of the sons – that is, for him. But the letter could not be found. So at the age of 28, Alexander learned that his ancestors were hereditary priests, and his grandfather and great-grandfather graduated from the Uzhgorod seminary. Moreover, his great-grandfather, priest Kirill Sabov, was the first to publish a grammar of the Russian language for Transcarpathians.

Since then, in all service forms, often filled out in Soviet times, which could affect the fate, Alexander indicated “employees” in the column “origin of parents”. And this, by and large, was not a lie: his two beloved fathers faithfully served all their lives: one – to God, the second – to the Motherland.

Shooting at satellites

Oleksandr Rog arrived in Kyiv at the age of 12 when his adoptive father was demobilized in 1961 due to Khrushchev’s reduction of the army. Naturally, after graduating from school, he, without hesitation, applied to the higher flight school – then all the boys dreamed of becoming military men. But the medical board found an unfortunate myopia. I had to enter the Kiev Polytechnic Institute. He graduated with honors. After graduating from the KPI, he worked for two years at a radio-electronic station in Kazakhstan in the system of the closed Head Technical Enterprise (already at that time in the USSR powerful emitting devices aimed into space were used). Then he returned to the department of KPI. Started a family, had two daughters. To support the family, he worked at several rates. But it did not work out with an already finished Ph.D. thesis, or rather, with admission to its defense.

Somehow the leadership of the department found out about the “priestly” origin and under this pretext hindered the defense for several years. When the cup of patience overflowed, and it was already 1991, Rog left the institute. In the wake of perestroika, his family, in company with several of their friends, applied to emigrate to America. The chances of a positive response were quite high – then there were several programs on the part of foreign Greek Catholic communities.

European page

But unexpectedly the Rog family ended up in France instead of America. After leaving the institute, Alexander organized a design bureau at one of the cooperatives, where drawings were created using computers and Western programs.

One of Alexander’s inventions – a machine tool with hitherto unsurpassed technical characteristics, exhibited at an exhibition in Kyiv, was noticed by representatives of a French company and offered the author a two-year contract.

“If you want to make your wife unhappy, take her to Paris for six months, and then return her home,” says Alexander Ivanovich. – Soon my French wife, leaving her personal Citroen at our cottage, already asked to bring a bag of groceries from the trunk to the porch. To which I replied that soon she would again have to carry bags and shopping bags through the whole of Kyiv.

And so it happened. Upon returning to Kyiv, Olga Ivanovna even cried, tormented by the crowd in a crowded transport. For some time, out of European habit, entering the Kiev tram, she greeted the passengers. However, in response, they only rewarded her with unfriendly looks, apparently believing that she had escaped from a well-known medical facility.

The contrast was so striking that when an unexpected positive response to their two-year-old request came from the American embassy, they did not hesitate for a long time – they packed up and left for the unknown with the whole family. Alexander was then 45 years old.

Overseas marathon

The struggle for existence in America lasted 15 years. The Rogov family emerged victorious from it. They just couldn’t get over the homesickness.

The Ukrainian engineer and inventor started his career in Novyi Svet as a laundromat worker and milk tanker, when he had to climb icy metal decks for 12-hour night shifts. He was tired to the point of exhaustion, but this made it possible to support his family and pay for his wife’s studies at a local law institute (before leaving, Olga Ivanovna worked as a legal adviser to the Bolshevik plant, and then as a lawyer in the Kiev Advocacy). Rog started with a minimum wage of $5 an hour. But after a few years he proved his worth. He carried out projects with the help of a program that can replace more than a dozen designers working on traditional drawing boards. Suffice it to say that his salary at that time was $67 an hour.

Of course, I was very tired. Every year, on business trips around America, he wound up 80 thousand km. Worked in this mode for 5 years. Jobs were changed four times, located in different states, houses were bought and sold four times. Obtained American citizenship. Olga Ivanovna became a successful lawyer. Just on the day of their silver wedding, Alexander Rog received two proposals from the largest companies. The choice was made in favor of Westinghouse, headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The company fulfilled orders, including for the Pentagon. Engineer Rog was a participant in several projects, in particular, he was engaged in improving the braking mechanism, or rather, catching combat aircraft when landing on the decks of aircraft carriers.

When asked which country trains the best mechanical engineers, Alexander Rog answered: “Natives of the Soviet Union are considered ideal, graduates of Indian universities are highly valued. But the trouble is that the relationship system in American companies often limits their capabilities. The decision is made by the head of the group, appointed by the owners of the company far from technology and science, not by ability, but by the ability to present themselves. Everyone works not for the result, but for their own reputation. I never wanted and could not force myself to live by such rules. There was always a feeling that I was working, and I really wanted to go home.

The dream of returning to Kyiv became a reality when the children grew up. The younger Anya graduated from MacGill University (Montreal, Canada), where she also works. The eldest Yulia, after graduating from Yale University (USA), lives and works in Moscow, in the international company UBS (United Banks of Switzerland).

The decision to return to Ukraine and the fact that they were selling their magnificent $200,000 house in the well-maintained town of Morrisville, North Carolina, was not communicated to acquaintances until the last moment. First, it could not fit in American heads. Secondly, the company could mistake him for a Ukrainian spy, as was often the case with other employees, perhaps not without reason.

In a word, having sold and given away most of the property, loaded the most valuable into a container, moved to Kyiv and bought a decent house in the suburbs.

Fabulous grapes

How did their long-awaited homeland meet them? Exactly the same as after France. Time seemed to stop, as if the last 15 years had not happened. The first signs of the fatherland were already found in the Odessa port: the container with things was half-halfed, something from the car disappeared.

Today Oleksandr Ivanovich teaches Ukrainian designers how to work with the SolidWorks computer program. But the baggage of knowledge accumulated over forty years of scientific work, in essence, remains unclaimed. His inventions, patented both in Ukraine and in the USA, are not needed either. One of them is an extruder, promising huge profits for those who bother to delve into the uniqueness of this unit.

Olga Ivanovna also works in her specialty – a lot and hard. She, like after France, has a difficult period of adaptation. The youngest daughter understands her best. Arriving from Canada for a visit, she realized that she would not be able to live here now: “Here people spit at each other’s feet.”

When it becomes especially sad from domestic lawlessness, including political lawlessness, which is so noticeable with a fresh look, Olga Ivanovna looks imploringly at her husband: get a ticket.”

But Alexander Ivanovich, like his colonel father once, looks away and frowns. Then he begins to console, seek a compromise: “Maybe we will go to Kem or Arkhangelsk? he says hopefully. “There are snows of untouched whiteness. And even better – in Vinogradovo. We’ll buy a little house by the church, the one where my father used to serve. There are the sweetest plums in the world, there are fabulous grapes…”
