Hoover mom claims day care gave 4-year-old melatonin without permission

A Hoover mom filed a police report after finding out that a staff member at Sugar N Spice Daycare and Kindergarten had apparently given her 4-year-old daughter melatonin, a sleep aid, without her consent, possibly for months.

Averill Perkins now believes that the medication has negatively affected the health of her daughter, as well as the health of a daughter who previously attended the facility. The day care owner disputes her claims. The Jefferson County Department of Human Resources is investigating.

Perkins raced to her daughter’s day care last Thursday after receiving a call from a staff member, who is also a family friend, saying Perkins’ daughter had spit out a pill because she didn’t like the taste of ‘the candy’ she was given.

When the staff member looked at the medication, she realized it was melatonin and asked Perkins whether she’d consented to her child receiving the sleep aid.

Perkins couldn’t believe what she was being told and pulled her daughter out of class to hear what had happened directly from her.

Perkins’ daughter told her the melatonin was given to her by a staff member who works in the kitchen and sometimes acts as a floater in different classrooms when needed.

“She goes: I get one every day at lunch, it’s for sleep. So she knows what it does to her,” said Perkins. “She started naming off like five different kids in her class who get it…I freaked out of course and I’m thinking there’s no way these other parents know what’s going on.”

Perkins said she immediately called the Hoover Police Department.

According to a police report, the medication that Perkins’ daughter had in her mouth matched a Spring Valley 5 milligram melatonin tablet that Sugar N Spice had on hand for two children whose parents requested they be given the sleep aid. Staff also had a lower-milligram gummy version of melatonin for one of the children.

Perkins said when she got home, she asked her 8-year-old if she’d ever been given something similar when she was at the daycare in 2018.

According to Perkins, her oldest child responded saying, “Oh, those pills with the pink polka dots? I used to get those.”

Perkins now suspects that some of the health problems her children are experiencing or experienced when they were enrolled at Sugar N Spice may be connected to melatonin.

Perkins’ daughter has been enrolled in the day care since August. She said her child has experienced nausea, headaches and sleep issues and emotional changes.

“As far as my 4-year-old goes, she’s been dealing with night terrors since at least February that I remember. She’s been bedwetting, and she has had this aggression, just so aggressive,” she said.

She also said that in 2018 her oldest daughter “basically had like a complete regression for being fully potty trained to all of a sudden having to wear pull ups at night again because she peed herself in the bed. ”

According to Children’s Medical Center Dallas, some doses of melatonin can be safe for children with short-term use, but side effects can include headaches, drowsiness, bedwetting, irritability and nausea.The hospital recommends consulting with a pediatrician before giving your child melatonin. They recommend only 1-3 milligrams for preschool aged children.

Perkins posted about her child’s experience in a Facebook post. She said she has since received a number of messages from parents who went to pick up their kids from Sugar N Spice and were told that they too had been given the sleep aid.

DHR confirmed to AL.com that the “Child Care Services Division is aware of the allegations, and our next steps are underway.”

While the agency did not comment further on the investigation, its website lists a substantiated complaint against the day care for administering medication on April 28, one day after Perkins filed a police report. Perkins said a state DHR investigator was present at the day care and took her witness statement on the same day.

A spokesperson said more public information will be available soon.

The owner of Sugar N Spice, Kent Marshall, said the accusations are a lie.

The daycare has been owned by his family since the 1970s. Marshall said this is the first time someone has complained about improper medication.

“This is very, very disturbing and it’s very unfortunate how people can do this to businesses,” Marshall said. “I want to know the truth and I want this to be investigated completely. I will say, I’m a reasonable person, people make mistakes. If one of the children that was supposed to get melatonin spit it out and that other child got it, that’s a potential way that a child could get something. But the timing of it does not make sense.”

There are other complaints listed against the daycare on the DHR website dating back to August 2022, but the cause of the complaints are only listed as ‘supervision at all times’ or ‘staff-parent communicate.” No adverse actions are noted to have been taken against the facility.

Marshall said his day care has always required a parental authorization form for all over the counter medication use, even including diaper cream and Vaseline, but will now also require a doctor’s note.

He claimed that Perkins and the staff members who reported the melatonin are ‘colluding’ against him because the staff member was allegedly found out to have lied about their educational background.

But Perkins says her only motivation is the wellbeing of her child. She has since withdrawn her daughter from the facility.

“They medicated my child without my permission. They medicated all these kids for God knows how long without any parental permission, without doctor’s notes, without any anything at all. And it’s okay if these people don’t want to work at a child care. They don’t have to work in child care, but they don’t need to hurt the kids just because they can’t control them,” said Perkins.

Hoover Police Capt Keith Czeskleba said the investigation is being handled by Jefferson County DHR and any charges against the day care or its staff would be contingent on their findings.

What is STEAM?

In 2011, President Obama called on all United States educators to ramp up their teaching game in reference to STEM related learning in the classroom. Referring to it as “…our generation’s Sputnik moment,” it was driven by the hopes that increased STEM activities would make the United States more competitive in the everlasting battle of science and technological innovation with other countries.

They are useful. The skills children learn when engaging with STEM concepts in preschool are transferable and useful across many aspects of their lives. For example, process skills, which include making observations, hypothesizing and critical thinking, are basic skills for math and science but are also valuable skills for learning any subject.

They are in demand. Have you ever thought about what your child’s life might be like in 20 years? In some ways it is hard to imagine what career options children might have as adults. One thing is certain;, skills in science, technology, engineering and math will be increasingly important. For early education providers like Primrose, part of our responsibility to children is preparing them for the realities they’ll face later in life.

What should STEM look like for young children?

An important part of our approach at Primrose is introducing children to the right activities at the right times. We introduce children to new skills and concepts when they are developmentally ready, making learning fun and natural.

Science, technology, engineering, and math are part of daily life. So, it makes sense that children should explore these subjects in an integrated way every day through books, discussions, experiments, art projects, educational games and more. This method is far more effective than limiting instruction of STEM subjects or any subject to only certain times of the day or week.

How can STEM be nurtured at home?

Look for ways STEM concepts arise in everyday life and point them out to your child. Talk about how the seasons change while walking outdoors, where fruits and vegetables come from while grocery shopping, or the different colors that make up pictures in a book you read together. Asking questions is a great way to encourage foundational STEM skills. “Why do you think…?” questions spark investigation and critical thinking, which are both crucial in grasping each element of STEM. Fostering creativity through art or experimenting with fun science activities for children are great ways to incorporate STEM learning at home.

STEM Boat Race Activity (Ages 3 and up)

Materials Needed

• Cork
• Aluminum foil
• Tape (different types)
• Craft sticks
• Plastic straws
• Empty plastic yogurt cups and water bottles
• Old swim noodle
• Other recyclables

Instructions

• Work together as a family to gather recyclable materials like those listed above and design and build a few small boats out of the recyclables. It is also important to think about where you might host your boat race — kitchen sink, pan full of water, bath tub at bath time, etc.
• Think about which items may float, what you may need to hold the boat(s) together, etc. Ask questions of each other to make your material selections.
• Once the boats are built, have each family member, place the boats in a tub or pan full of water. Have them blow ‘wind’ toward the boats to see how fast the creations travel.
• Challenge each family member to build a faster boat and race two of them by each blowing and/or pushing on different boats at the same time. Discuss which boat is faster and why.

As children engage with science, technology, engineering, and math, they are also building a strong foundation for learning in all subjects. With a little guidance from you and your child’s teachers, your young explorer will develop a love of STEM and learning for life. Purpose: to introduce children to the water cycle in nature.

Tasks:

1. To consolidate knowledge about the conditions under which water evaporates.

2. Get acquainted with the properties of steam: transparent, colorless, invisible like air, it cannot be kept in a dish, it quickly diverges in all directions.

When a black cloud appeared in the sky, a white cloud gave way to it, declaring: “Let it bring its rainy joy to people, animals, plants.” Then a black cloud freed the sky of sunny joy for all life on earth. So, giving way to each other, they began to live.

-Why did you decide that?

№1 Pour half a glass of water into two identical saucers. One saucer was placed in a cold place, and the other in a warm place. Every day they observed how much water remained in the saucers, made sketches; every day it became less and less in the saucer that stood by the battery. The water evaporated and turned into steam. And finally, she disappeared, while in another saucer, standing in the refrigerator, there was still water. This circumstance makes it possible to conclude that on a warm day, the evaporation of water is faster than on a cold day.

Our Mission

The First United Methodist Church Daycare/Preschool is child-centered, biblically-based and educational. We offer a hands-on, developmentally-appropriate program where your child will be enriched spiritually, socially, cognitively and physically.

DAYCARE/PRESCHOOL

2021 – 2022 School Year Details:

• Ages 6 weeks through Kindergarten
• Full-time only and a year-round program
• $130/week – includes two snacks and lunch daily
  • second child discount of $10/week
• Monday – Friday, 7:00am – 5:30pm

Once children reach the age for preschool (K3, K4, K5), they will automatically receive preschool for the morning (8:30-12:00) during the school year (August-May) and will have before and after childcare.

REGISTRATION PROCESS:
Registration begins in February for children already in our program and for church members. Remaining spots are opened to the public at the beginning of March.   Enrollment packets should be returned at least one week before the first day of attendance. Before the child can be admitted, all forms (registration packet, current immunization record, signed agreement page of Parents’ Handbook and copy of insurance card) must be completed and turned in with the registration fee. 

WAITING LIST:
You may call to be added to our waiting list at any time, including pregnancy. Our waiting list for younger ages is extensive and spots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.  You will be contacted if/when a spot becomes available, at which time you will be asked to pick up and fill out our enrollment packet and pay the registration fee. 

KINDERGARTEN

2021 – 2022 School Year Details:

• Child is not required to be five years old before September 1, 2021. If your child is on the borderline of meeting the city’s age cutoff, this may be a great way to challenge them this year!
• Smaller class with greater individualized attention
• Abeka’s comprehensive, biblically-based curriculum features lessons in phonics, reading, manuscript writing, numbers, and developmental skills like mazes and coloring.
• Before and after childcare is included
• $130/week – includes two snacks and lunch daily
• Monday – Friday, 7:00am – 5:30pm

FUMC’s Summer Camp is a program created to assist parents and their children by providing faith-based and exciting childcare during the summer months. Children who are entering 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 5th grades are invited to join us for daily activities, Bible lessons, and outdoor fun.

COVID Safety Measures:

• Children at our summer camp will not be required to wear masks. Current protocols, however, do require staff to wear masks in the building.
• In previous years, summer camp included field trips. We wish we could this year, but for the health and safety of everyone, there are no field trips planned for this summer. Our hope is that this change is for the summer of 2021 only.
• Sanitizing of the rooms, equipment, and toys is part of the daily routine.
• In the event that your child shows any signs of sickness, please keep your child out of summer camp until their condition has improved.

Dothan on Wikipedia

Dothan is a city in the United States, in the state of Alabama, the administrative center and the largest population center of Houston County. Parts of the city are also located in Dale and Henry counties. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the area where Dothan is located was known as Poplar Head. There was a stronghold ten or twelve miles east of Poplar Head, where settlers from nearby towns and villages took refuge when they felt threatened by the Indians. By 1840, the Indian Wars in Alabama were over, and the fortress soon disappeared. The new settlers realized that further development required the establishment of a governing body and local law enforcement. On November 10, 1885, the inhabitants of Poplar Head voted to register the city. The name “Dotan” was adopted as the name of the new city. Dothan is located in southeastern Alabama, about 32 km west of the Georgia border and 29miles north of the Florida border. According to the US Census Bureau, the area of ​​the city is 224. 8 km², of which 0.52 km² (0.23%) is surface water. The population of the city according to the 2010 census is 65,496 people.

It feels (almost) as good to give gratitude as it does to receive it—and in our opinion, few people deserve heaps of praise like your child’s teachers. Since they have the power to open the world to your children every day, we hope you’ll show your child’s teachers how grateful you are for everything they do. Looking for nice things to say to your teacher, but at loss for words? No worries! Here are 11 ways to say THANK YOU to a teacher for the hard work and love they bring to the classroom every single day.

1. Thank a Teacher by Asking to Help

An offer to volunteer is music to your teacher’s ears! Plus, helping out in the classroom even a couple hours a month will build connections to your child’s world—and the teachers who nurture and love them every day.

2. Thank a Teacher with a Hand-Drawn Picture

You know the way your heart melts when your kid draws something just for you? Suggest that they draw a picture for their teacher—and their heart will melt, too! Even the smallest sketch of sweetness from your child will go a long way in letting your teacher know they are appreciated.

3. Show Gratitude to Teachers with Sweets

Find out what your teacher really loves to eat—and treat them out of the blue. Do they have a favorite chocolate bar? Do they snack on energy bars? Whatever they love to munch on, a sweet-treat surprise will make their day.

27 Ways to Make Sure You Do Teacher Appreciation Right

It’s so important to recognize and honor your staff through teacher appreciation. Even the smallest gesture of thanks can go a long way in creating a positive work environment and helping educators love their jobs.

Now we know budgets are tight, and money for extra things often comes out of your own pocket. So we pulled together some of the most creative, least expensive, and best ideas for teacher appreciation. Show your teachers how valuable they are without breaking the bank.

1. Gather letters from your families.

Send a request home to students and families, requesting they fill out a form or write a letter to help show appreciation for their teacher. It helps to supply the prompts or questions because they’re more likely to complete the request. It can be simple questions like: 

• Why do you like your teacher? 
• What’s something you’ve learned this year? 
• Share a special story. 

Don’t forget to give a deadline for returning the letters. You could also set this up during an open house night to catch families in the moment. You can also use index cards, like in the example above. 

2. Create a letters-of-gratitude campaign. 

This is similar to the letters from families, but this time, the letter will come from someone close to the teacher. To do this one, put a note requesting a letter in an envelope and then ask your teachers to give it to someone close to them. This can be a spouse, parent, friend, etc. Ask that the letters be returned to the school without the teacher reading it. Then give them out all at once.

Principals who have tried this say it’s such a meaningful experience for their teachers to hear from people they are close to. They get great responses in general and have only had to write fill-in letters a handful of times. 

3. Roll out the red carpet.

This idea is from Kathy Paiml. Her PTO literally rolled out the red carpet in the hallway. Every person had a star on the walk of fame, and all the teachers and staff got to walk down the carpet as everyone cheered.  

4. Use technology to gather positive comments. 

If you’re looking for a tech-savvy way to gather comments, which will definitely save you time, then try using Google Forms. Here are some easy tips for how to use Google Forms  to collect the information you need. You can easily send something out to parents or students to gather notes of appreciation. 

5. Celebrate your teachers with a pun.

You can’t go wrong with a good pun. An orange theme, for example, is fun, colorful, and pretty inexpensive to create on your own. Check out these ideas:

• Orange you glad it’s Friday? (Everything orange) 
• There’s muffin like a great teacher. (Muffins and fruit) 
• We donut know what we’d do without you. (Donuts and coffee) 
• We are fortunate to have you at our school. (Fortune cookies) 
• This might sound cheesy, but I think you’re really grate. (Cheese and crackers) 
• Just popping by to say thanks. (Popcorn and drinks) 
• We scream for how much we appreciate you. (Ice cream sundaes) 

6. Wash the staff’s cars.

One principal said they coordinate with their coaches and athletic department to set up a car-washing station during teacher appreciation. It’s free for all teachers, and it gets students involved, too. 

7. Decorate their doors. 

Loudly and proudly celebrate your teachers by decorating their doors. This costs very little. You just need some time and some parent volunteers to pull it off. One principal told us that he turns his teachers into superheroes, complete with large face cutouts and capes. 

8. Let baristas make your teachers coffee.

This one will also take some help from amazing parents, but if you pull it off, teachers will be talking about it for a long time. Set up your own hallway Starbucks, making delicious, caffeine-filled treats for your teachers. 

Jennifer Toomey, a teacher at Hawthorne Scholastic Academy in Chicago, did a similar thing, pairing the treats with books to promote reading. Thanks for the idea, Jennifer! 

9. Ask local businesses to get involved. 

You might be surprised at how much your community will help—all you have to do is ask. Better yet, have a parent helper or PTA member take this one on. Have them send a few emails, asking for lunch, coffee, and other treats. 

10. Give your staff passes and coupons to use.

There are so many passes you can offer teachers as a way of saying thanks. We love this photo Jaclyn shared. Here are a few other ideas: 

• Jeans pass 
• Cover a duty 
• Early leave/late arrival 
• Long lunch

11. Bring in supplies for ice cream floats.

This is such an easy and inexpensive way to say thanks. You really only need ice cream, root beer, and glasses. It’s a memorable treat that you can pull off for less than $20.

12. Ask your parents to cover duties all day or all week. 

This one doesn’t cost a thing. It just requires some brave parents and a little coordination. It’s a great way to give ALL your staff a break from a daily duty. 

13. Put together a dessert table.

Few things say thank you like chocolate and sweets. Make a dessert-all-day table and ask school parents to help supply it. It’s a fun way to let teachers know you’re thinking of them. 

14. Ask families to bring in specific treats. 

One principal says her trick is to give families very specific requests, none of which are too expensive. For instance, she’ll assign one grade to bring chips and dips, another grade to bring chocolate and candies, and another to bring drinks. Assigning specific tasks has really increased response.

15. Create art with the students. 

One principal says she takes over art class for one week and works with students to create a big art piece specifically for their teacher. It’s a collaborative and visual way to say thanks for all that they do. 

16. Frame a special sign, saying, or note.

You can buy frames from the dollar store and then easily put in a special quote or saying for your teachers. You can also buy frames from a local crafter or ask parents if they want to help make some. We love this one from Rustic Creations by Laura. 

17. Make your own bouquets. 

One principal asked students to bring in a single flower, and then they took what they got and created bouquets. (You can get vases at a thrift store or the dollar store.) This was a meaningful way for students to contribute. 

18. Bring in a food truck or ice cream truck.

This one will be oh-so popular, but it might take a little more cash. You can try to cut costs by asking food trucks to donate or give you a discount. (You never know.) If that’s not possible, have an open call for donations from school families or select members of the community. Let them know what it’s for because they’ll be more likely to throw in a few bucks.  

19. Offer room service.

This is an idea that we’ve seen a few principals do, including Susan Marchino, pictured above. You put a note on a teacher’s door, offering them room service. You can list treats, like coffee, water, chocolate, fruit, etc. Tell them they can select one or two items and then hang their request on their door by a certain time. Collect the notes. Then stop by and leave the teacher’s requested items before the end of the day. 

20. Have a cookout. 

If you’re able to bring in parent volunteers to throw a cookout, this is a good way to have a picnic with your teachers and great interactions with teachers and families. Put together a sign-up sheet for supplies and volunteers. If you get it going, it could even become an annual event. 

21. Offer smoothies, mimosas, and bloodies. 

Kick the morning off right with non-alcoholic breakfast drinks. You can make mimosas using OJ, Sprite, and pomegranate juice. (Thanks for the tip, Brad S.) Then it’s easy to buy a bloody mix and accessories or frozen fruit for smoothies. If you want to make it even more special, splurge on some fun glasses. 

22. Offer massages with a mini spa.

This is going to be so popular. If you’re on a budget, ask the local massage schools if they have students you can use. You might also send an email to parents, asking if anyone is a massage therapist! 

Have a sign-up sheet for teachers to get massages, then set everything up in an empty classroom that has soft music, apple cider, and other treats. 

23. Rent an ice cream machine for the entire week.

You can give your teachers ice cream all week long through the magic of a rental! Set it up so your teachers can have ice cream anytime they want. (Other possibilities include a popcorn machine, snow cone machine, etc.) It will be a really cool experience.

Write messages in sidewalk chalk.

This is a fun and easy way to welcome teachers to their day. If you can get kids to school early to help with this one, it’ll go a long way in getting the job done. 

25. Ask different clubs and organizations to sponsor a day for teachers.

The PTA isn’t the only group you can tap. Send out a note to ask different organizations if they can take on a day to sponsor for teachers. You can create slots (through a Google Doc or a site like SignUpGenius ) for things like breakfast, lunch, snacks, etc. You might also ask people to sign up to create treat boxes for teachers to take home to enjoy, like these beautiful macarons boxes from Misfit Macarons. 

26. Play bingo for treats and gift cards. 

It can be hard (and expensive) to give everyone on your staff a gift card, but you can still have a fun experience with your staff by playing bingo for prizes. If you can do this over lunch, so teachers won’t have to stay late after school, that’s even better.  

27. Create your own note to let them know why you appreciate them. 

When you do your daily rounds and say good morning to each teacher, take an extra minute to walk into a class and notice what they are doing. Make a mental note—or better, write it down. Then, when you are back at your desk, send an email right away. Concrete, direct feedback to your teachers is critical to success.
