Beginner’s Guide to Social Domain Theory – Clare Conry-Murray, Ph.D.

Morality has to do with how people should  interact with each other.  Moral development research aims to understand how people develop from infancy into adulthood in the way they think about and interact with others.  Since morality involves issues of right and wrong, it is proscriptive or prohibitive–that is, morality is about the ways we should or should not act.   But not all issues of right and wrong are moral.  For example, a mistake in long division may be wrong but it is not usually seen as immoral.  So we also add that moral development research examines issues of right and wrong in social settings, where actions affect other people.

What is morality to most people?

Social domain theory uses a definition of morality that comes from philosophy, but we also find that most people use the same definition. The basis of morality is in trying not to harm other people. Harm includes many facets–including issues of welfare, justice and rights.   Social Domain Theory research finds that people consider things to be moral that have to do with avoiding harm to people (welfare), being fair (justice), and respecting each other’s rights (rights).  The core of morality is avoiding harm, but that also means trying not to treat people unfairly and respecting their rights (Turiel, 1983).

A basic respect for other people means that, most of the time, we all try not to hurt each other.  We can safely walk down the street without anyone purposefully trying to crash their car into us, even if it would get them where they’re going faster.  This is because people also usually do not like to cause others pain.  People are also generally willing to be helpful (especially when it is not difficult).  For example, when a man at a subway station in London fell into the gap between the platform and the train, people didn’t expect the conductor to just let his leg get ripped off.  Instead they all worked together to push the train a few inches away from the platform so he could get out.

Not causing serious harm to others as they go about their day may seem like a very small thing to ask of others. We start to understand morality by looking at the obvious cases where there is a lot of agreement, like “don’t run people over” because it is actually notable that people generally try not to harm others.

In addition, people usually only see actions as moral if they are intentional.  Harming someone accidentally (and without negligence) is not usually seen as immoral.

Are there social rules about right and wrong that are not moral?

Yes. Not all social rules relate to the concepts of rights, justice and welfare. Some social rules like “don’t use swear words” or “only girls wear dresses” were not made to avoid hurting people or out of a concern with fairness or rights. These examples are not even rules in some places.  For example, not only girls wear dresses– think of a Catholic priest who wears a long gown called vestments during mass or a man graduating from college who wears a cap and gown. The rule about “dresses” doesn’t apply to those situations, but it does apply to other situations.  Rules like these that vary depending on the setting are called conventions. Sometimes they have a purpose (e.g. to make boys and girls look distinct) and sometimes they’re just something we do out of habit or convenience (e.g. eat pasta with a fork but pizza with your hands).  Sometimes the purpose of a conventional rule is important (e.g. we all drive on the right in the United States so there’s not chaos), but conventions can be changed.  For example, some countries drive on the right and some on the left.  Either way is fine as long as everybody follows the rule.

If you don’t follow conventional rules, there can still be consequences, but they depend on the situation.  People might look at you funny if you dress unconventionally or you could even get in trouble and be punished for using swear words in some settings.  My son who liked to watch Minecraft videos when he was young learned the phrase “what the f*ck,”  without knowing that the f-word is a bad word.   When he said it on the playground at school, he got in trouble, even though behind his back, all the adults thought it was pretty funny. The adults weren’t worried about him hurting anyone by talking that way, but they still made sure he didn’t use that phrase again because it’s against the rules. So there are consequences to conventional rule violations, but they depend on the setting– they are not intrinsic to the action they way harm is.  For example, I’m guessing my son (who is now 15) uses the f-word around his friends sometimes, and I’m pretty sure there are no negative consequences from his friends for that language.  When there are consequences to conventional rule violations, they change with the context (conventions at school differ from conventions with friends).

Are moral rules and conventional rules different?

Yes.  The consequences are different for moral and conventional rule violations.  All of the consequences to conventional violations are constructed by people, and so the people can change the consequences.   The teacher who told my son not to swear enforced the rule about no swearing at school, but some families may let their kids swear. The rules about when men can wear a dress already do differ in different situations.

But if you run over someone with your car on purpose, most people would say it was wrong regardless of the law in that place. In fact most people would say even if the law allowed it, it would still be wrong to run someone over for no good reason. That’s because the consequence to that person is so harmful.  And that harm occurs every time someone is run over.  We call that kind of consequence intrinsic to the act.  It happens every time. It is part of the definition of the action.  Moral violations all have intrinsic consequences related to harm or unfairness or a violation of basic human rights.

You can think of examples of other basic moral violations– pushing someone off a swing, paying one person for their work but not paying another person for the same work.   These are intrinsically harmful or unfair.

In Social Domain Theory research, we used what we call Criterion Judgments to see if people distinguish moral from conventional issues in different realms.

What are Criterion Judgments?

Criterion judgments are based on criteria that are used to judge social rule violations.  If people notice that moral but not conventional rules are based on intrinsic consequences, then they will think about moral rules differently.  The criteria tell us where we expect to see differences between moral and conventional reasoning.  If consequences are intrinsic to the act of harming others, then they would not depend on the situation or anything local about the situation.  People judge moral violations differently than conventional rule violations in several ways, including:

  • Justifications–People use different justifications when they explain their judgments about different types of rules: Moral justifications refer to welfare, justice or rights, while conventional justifications refer to tradition or authorities.
  • Rule Contingency— People judge changes to rules differently depending on the domain: Moral rules always have consequences to welfare, justice or rights because the consequences are intrinsic and so changing the rules does not change the consequences. Therefore, moral rules tend to be judged wrong even when the rule is changed.  Conventional rules depend on the context, and if the rule is changed, there may not be a consequence anymore, so conventional violations may not be wrong in the absence of a rule.  We call this Rule Contingency.
    • Example: Moral: If you ask kids whether they can hit others when the teacher says hitting is OK in their classroom, kids still say hitting is not OK. Evaluations of hitting do not depend on the rule.

Conventional: When you ask if they can wear PJs to school when the teacher says it is OK in their classroom, kids say wearing PJ is now OK.  Evaluations of appropriate clothing do depend on the rule.

  • Generalizability–People will judge rules differently depending on changes to the setting.  Moral rules still have the same consequences no matter where the violation occurs.  Therefore moral rules are considered generalizable. Conventional rules can have different consequences in different settings–they are not generalizable.
    • Example: Moral: If you ask kids whether they can shove others in another country where everyone shoves people, kids still say shoving others  is not OK.  Evaluations of shaving do not depend on the context.

Conventional: When you ask if eating with your hands is OK in a country where that’s how they do it, kids say wearing eating with your hands is now OK. Evaluations of how to eat depend on the context.

What is similar about moral and conventional rules?

  • Both moral and conventional rules affect social relationships and they tell people how to behave.
  • People who break both moral and conventional rules can be punished.
  • Both moral and conventional violations can both be more or less serious.  Moral violations tend to be more serious but not always.  For example, in some places, gender norms are strictly enforced and so would be seen as a serious violation.

What about things not covered by moral and conventional rules?

Issues that are not covered by either moral or conventional rules and are left to the person to decide for themselves are called Personal (Nucci, 2001).  These are interesting because what is personal can differ in different cultures (Conry-Murray, Kim & Turiel, 2020), and even between teenagers and their parents.  Parents tend to think issues like whether a 17 year old should get a tattoo is  conventional, while the teenerager often thinks it should be a personal decision and they should be able to decide for themselves (Smetana & Rote, 2019).

Prudential issues have to do with harm to the self.

Why do people do immoral things if we all agree that harming others is unacceptable?

Social domain theory researchers have identified several ways that people come to different conclusions about social issues.

Multifaceted issues.  Sometimes issues are complicated and include multiple different conflicting priorities–including different moral priorities that could be in conflict.  For example, with gun control there are issues related to the rights of the gun owner, and perhaps the right to protect oneself, and the rights of those who could be hurt by the gun.  People may see all of these as moral issues involving rights or welfare but some may prioritize the rights of the gun owner over the welfare of potential victims, while others could prioritize the reverse.

Other issues may include moral and conventional issues in conflict.  For example, a parent may forbid a son from going to a sewing club (Perko, et al, 2020) because they are concerned about following gender norms (conventional), but the son may be thinking about his right to make his own choices (moral). Moral issues are not automatically judged to be the priority.

In addition, some issues may be seen as conventional to some and personal to others– like the parent-teenager conflict over tattoos described above.

Informational assumptions. Informational assumptions are understandings about the way the world works that impacts the issue (Wainryb, 1991). Sometimes facts (or beliefs about what is true) help people weigh the importance of different issues.  For example, using the issue of gun control from above, if you believe that gun deaths are very, very uncommon, it might affect whether you are concerned about potential victims compared to if you believe gun deaths are more frequent.

Informational assumptions also impact whether you believe harm is involved at all.  For example, if a parent spanks a child to teach them not to run into the street, and it effectively teaches the child an important lesson, most people would say the spanking was acceptable.   But if spanking doesn’t work to teach the child a lesson, then it is just abuse, and it is usually judged to be not OK if that informational assumption is believed to be true.

Second order effects.  Sometimes culture-specific rituals have meaning that can affect others.  It can be a sign of disrespect to wear jeans and a t-shirt to a wedding, and that disrespect can cause people psychological harm. The harm is not intrinsic in the same way that being punched in the gut is, but it is still causing harm.  The harm comes about because of the meaning of the convention.

Do researchers studying morality judge others’ virtue?

Social domain theory (and most morality researchers) do not suggest that one view of a controversial issue is better or worse than another.  Instead we try to describe how people think about issues and behave in moral or social situations.  We try to find patterns in people’s thinking and behavior that will help us describe common types of moral thinking and behavior, and perhaps even predict future thinking and behavior.   But we do not tell people what the most moral thing to do is.

Social Determinants of Health – Healthy People 2030

What are social determinants of health?

Social determinants of health (SDOH) are the conditions in the environments where people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age that affect a wide range of health, functioning, and quality-of-life outcomes and risks.

SDOH can be grouped into 5 domains:

Image

(141.23 KB)

Healthy People 2030, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion. Retrieved [date graphic was accessed], from https://health.gov/healthypeople/objectives-and-data/social-determinants-health

Social determinants of health (SDOH) have a major impact on people’s health, well-being, and quality of life. Examples of SDOH include:

  • Safe housing, transportation, and neighborhoods
  • Racism, discrimination, and violence
  • Education, job opportunities, and income
  • Access to nutritious foods and physical activity opportunities
  • Polluted air and water
  • Language and literacy skills

SDOH also contribute to wide health disparities and inequities. For example, people who don’t have access to grocery stores with healthy foods are less likely to have good nutrition. That raises their risk of health conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity — and even lowers life expectancy relative to people who do have access to healthy foods.

Just promoting healthy choices won’t eliminate these and other health disparities. Instead, public health organizations and their partners in sectors like education, transportation, and housing need to take action to improve the conditions in people’s environments.

That’s why Healthy People 2030 has an increased and overarching focus on SDOH.

How Does Healthy People 2030 Address SDOH?

One of Healthy People 2030’s 5 overarching goals is specifically related to SDOH: “Create social, physical, and economic environments that promote attaining the full potential for health and well-being for all.

In line with this goal, Healthy People 2030 features many objectives related to SDOH. These objectives highlight the importance of “upstream” factors — usually unrelated to health care delivery — in improving health and reducing health disparities.

More than a dozen workgroups made up of subject matter experts with different backgrounds and areas of expertise developed these objectives. One of these groups, the Social Determinants of Health Workgroup, focuses solely on SDOH.

Lookalike domains and protection against them

Our colleagues have already talked in sufficient detail about how cybercriminals attack companies through compromised email addresses of employees, as well as how to protect against such attacks using SPF, DKIM and DMARC technologies. But despite the obvious advantages of the described solutions, there is a method that can bypass them, and we want to talk about it.

But let’s start from afar: how relevant is email today? After all, this year we saw a sharp rise in the popularity of video conferencing software, and in the few years before that, the same growth in the popularity of instant messengers, in particular WhatsApp and Telegram. However, email is still the main means of communication on the Internet, at least in a business environment. Indirect confirmation of this is the increase in the number and quality of attacks aimed at compromising corporate mail (Business E-mail Compromise, BEC). According to the American Cybercrime Complaint Center (IC3), the financial damage from these incidents has increased sevenfold over the past five years.

Financial damage from BEC attacks, 2015–2019 (download)

The data for 2020 has not yet been processed, but given the COVID-19 pandemic and the mass transfer of employees to remote work, it can be safely assumed that the number of BEC attacks has only grown. The same is true of early studies of the threat landscape.

The use of similar domains in BEC

One of the features of BEC attacks is the emphasis not on the technical component (in the case of mail, the capabilities of cybercriminals are rather limited), but on social engineering. As a rule, technical and social methods are combined for greater efficiency.

The lion’s share of combinations of SPF, DKIM and DMARC technologies cope more or less effectively. But there is an exception – an attack using similar domains (lookalike domain). The essence of the method is simple: a cybercriminal registers a domain that looks very similar to the domain of the attacked company or its counterparty. Letters sent from it pass domain authentication without any problems (they deceive SPF), are provided with a cryptographic signature (they skip DKIM), and in general do not arouse suspicion from security systems. One problem: these are phishing emails. And if they are written plausibly enough, according to the corporate template, with an emphasis on the urgency of the issue, etc. , then the victim will most likely not notice the catch.

Here are some examples of fake domain names:

Original domain Fake domain
netflix.com netffix.com
kaspersky.com kapersky.com
uralairlines.ru uralairilnes.ru

As you can see, the fake differs from the original in just one letter, which is added (or removed) in such a way that the substitution could not be detected at a cursory glance.

To get a general idea of the use of lookalike domains, we collected statistics on campaigns using lookalike fakes for the third quarter of 2020. After analyzing the data, we came to the conclusion that the pandemic has significantly changed the vector of thinking of attackers. If the financial sector was the main target before it, now the service sector has come to the fore, which includes various e-commerce services: grocery delivery, online shopping, buying air tickets, etc. In the third quarter, domains in this sector accounted for 34, 7% of the total number of campaigns.

Distribution of detected lookalike domains by category, Q3 2020 (download)

then in the third quarter – already 22.2%. This is quite expected, since the massive transition to online should have affected the overall situation.

A little bit about the lookalike approach

Unlike spam mailings, mass and long-term, attacks using lookalike domains, like any BEC attack, are designed for a specific victim (or range of victims). Consequently, emails are few and well thought out, and domains have a very short lifespan. We see that half of the fake domains are used once, and in 73% of cases the address is active within one day.

This leads to the fact that classic anti-spam solutions based on the signature approach (they saw an attack – made a rule) do not cope, and there is a need for proactive protection methods. There are two common and at the same time simple methods that are often chosen by companies concerned with protection against lookalike attacks and the like.

The first one is self-registration of domains with typos and subsequent setting of a redirect to the official domain. This reduces the chances of cybercriminals to register a plausible forgery, but, firstly, it does not completely eliminate the threat, and secondly, it does not prevent the domains of partners, contractors and other organizations with which the company is in correspondence from being forged.

The second is the compilation of lists of plausible fake names for both the company domain and partner and counterparty domains. They are loaded into an anti-spam solution in order to preventively block all correspondence coming from fakes. The main disadvantage of this method is still the same: the inability to provide for all options for fake domains, especially if the company works with many organizations. Plus, the human factor: one typo in the list for tens and hundreds of domain names will lead to a security breach, and in the worst case, to blocking letters from a legitimate domain instead of a fake one and an additional headache for business units.

In general, when our customers were no longer satisfied with standard solutions, they came to us for complex, but more effective solutions. In this regard, we have developed a method that does not require user intervention. In short, it automatically compiles a global list of legitimate addresses that, in theory, can be faked, and on its basis analyzes and blocks emails from lookalike domains. In fact, it works ahead of the curve.

Principle of operation

The method of protection against lookalike attacks consists of three main elements: calculations on the client, domain reputation checks in KSN (Kaspersky Secutiy Network) and calculations on the infrastructure. These stages, in turn, are divided into subtasks – the general principle is shown in the diagram:

In practice, everything looks like this. When a letter is received, the sender’s domain gets into KSN, where it is compared with the list of lookalike domains already known to us. If the address is found, the letter is instantly blocked (steps 1 to 3). If nothing is known about the sender’s domain, then the message is quarantined for a short period (step 4). During this time, the technology checks the address according to a given algorithm, and if it is found to be fake, it adds it to the list of lookalike domains in KSN. After the message is released from quarantine, it is re-scanned (step 9) and is blocked because by this time the list of lookalike domains has already been updated.

Let’s consider how the sender check works and how the list of lookalike domains is replenished. Information about sending mail to quarantine enters the KSN database along with additional metadata, including the sender’s domain (step 5). At the first stage of analysis, domains are checked for a wide range of characteristics, such as WHOIS data, DNS records, certificates, etc. This stage is necessary in order to immediately weed out clearly legitimate hosts that are still unknown to our system. In the future, messages from such domains will not be re-quarantined, since information about them will already be contained in KSN.

At the second stage, the system checks the similarity of suspicious hosts and addresses from our global list of legitimate domains (step 7), which includes the domains of our clients and their counterparties. It is generated automatically based on an assessment of the frequency of sending legitimate emails from the domain and the uniformity of the flow of emails among users. The extent to which the picture we received corresponds to the behavior of employees in terms of business correspondence determines the reputation of the domain (step 6). If the scam domain is very similar to a legitimate address, it is also included in the list of lookalike domains and all correspondence sent from it is blocked.

The approach we have developed is more complicated than a simple registration of similar domains to a company, and allows you to block attacks from lookalike domains in real time when they first appear. The human factor is also excluded – the global list of legitimate domains is kept up to date thanks to automatic updates.

Because we have extended hours, we are able to accept full-time, part-time and varied schedules. Cots, clean sheets and blankets are provided each evening at 9:00 p.m. as the children await your arrival. For safety, the center is locked at all times. Infant Program 6 Weeks – 18 Months

Day and Evening Care

Our new infant rooms create the perfect home away from for your baby. Our infant room is divided into two separate areas. Newborns have their own special area, keeping them warm, cozy and safe.

All babies have the everyday security of their own crib, fresh sheets and blankets provided by the Center. Once enrolled, they are assigned their individual caretaker, giving them a chance to bond with our staff. Sleeping infants are constantly monitored. Cribs are used only for sleeping.

The ratio of staff to infants is carefully monitored to stay below the State minimum. Diapers are changed every 2 hours, more often if needed, and feedings are on demand, keeping your baby happy and comfortable. Babies are cuddled and rocked. A cuddled baby is a happy baby!! You will receive a daily written summary of your baby, so you know how much they slept, ate, and when diapers were changed.

There are lots of opportunities for spontaneous and fun filled learning experiences as your baby grows and develops. Our babies love playing ball, chasing bubbles, dabbling in finger paint (really pudding!), reading stories in a comfy lap, singing songs and moving to the music. When weather permits they enjoy the fresh air and sunshine in a big, 6 seat stroller.

Be sure to stop in and visit – you will be impressed!

Toddler Program 8 months – 3 years

Day and Evening Care

Terrific toddlers!! Active, busy, curious and very independent!
Our toddler program is divided into two classrooms, separated by age and ability. This makes it much easier to meet their rapidly changing needs. As your child begins in the toddler room they will enjoy many exciting activities. They love reading stories, singing songs, and moving to the music.

There is a lot of messy play – painting, sand and water play, both indoors and out when weather permits. They begin relating to their world, playing “Mommy” and “Daddy” and taking care of their “babies”, working puzzles, building with big blocks, and scribbling pictures for your refrigerator.

Toddlers are active, so they are given times to play on the big, soft mat and share an indoor climber. There are lots of room for running, tumbling, dancing and games. When weather permits they enjoy our playground, complete with a play set.  They love the big, yellow slide!

Their schedules include lots of busy time but also allow time for quiet activities. Naptime is from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. each afternoon. Lesson plans are posted outside each classroom so you can see what the children are learning. When ready, we will work with you to encourage potty training. We will follow your lead in this big step towards growing up.

We are committed to improving early childhood teaching practices in order to meet the needs of all learners and utilize highly impactful strategies that support young children’s growth and development. Our comprehensive, creative preschool early learning curriculum is research-based with a focus on language development, content knowledge, and early literacy skills. Cincinnati is a city on the border of the states of Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, in the northeastern part of the United States. Located along the Ohio River, the city was once nicknamed the “Queen of the West,” and Winston Churchill himself considered Cincinnati the most beautiful continental city in the United States. Today, Cincinnati fully justifies the status of a major industrial center – enterprises of the light, chemical, machine-tool industries, factories for the production of electronic equipment and others operate here. Also in the city are the headquarters of many well-known companies, so, from 19century, Procter & Gamble is based here. The special charm of the city is brought by its architecture, culture, as well as the atmosphere of “small” Germany. The fact is that in Cincinnati there is a whole area built by German immigrants (this part of the city is even included in the National Register of Historic Places of America). In Over-the-Rhine, you can find entire blocks of old mansions and organic breweries. These historic buildings are wonderfully combined with modern skyscrapers from downtown Cincinnati and a suspension bridge across the Ohio River – the prototype of the famous Brooklyn Bridge in New York. Well, the main gastronomic card of the city, which is included in the top of the most iconic dishes of America – Cincinnati chile, also cannot be overlooked. “Queen of the West” will be of particular interest to future students – the largest educational institutions in the region operate in the city: the University of Cincinnati and the University of Miami, located in the northern suburbs of Cincinnati.

The city is located in the zone between subtropical and continental climatic zones. Summers are hot and humid, while winters are mild and snowy. The air temperature in the hottest months is about +28°С…+32°С. In the coldest month (January), the thermometer can drop to +2°C during the day and -7°C at night.

The city is served by an international airport, where you can fly from the capital of Russia by transferring, for example, in Istanbul and New York.

You can rent a spacious studio or one-room apartment with a modern renovation here from 600 – 650 $ per month.

Testimonials

Our three dogs love McKee’s, and their attentive staff give me peace of mind. I use the day care and boarding services, knowing my dogs are in good hands. I honestly don’t know what I would do without McKee’s!

Kelly Marsh

We have trusted McKee’s with our three rescue dogs for daycare and boarding since 2014. The staff is so friendly, helpful and caring that we have recommended McKee’s to many of our friends and neighbors. When our doggies are there, it’s like they’re with their second family.

The Gonos Family

McKee’s has been a LIFE SAVER for us and our sweet Lexi. We utilize their doggie day care service 3 days a week and grooming when needed. Lexi definitely needs understanding and patient folks working with her and they have gone above and beyond every visit. We highly recommend and love McKee’s!

They partner with four student centers for the ultimate in medical training, such as Shriners Children’s Hospital, Overton Brooks Veterans Affairs Medical Center, University Health and Willis Knighton. In addition to dual degree programs, they have Masters and PhD programs such as Masters in Occupational Therapy, Physician Assistants, Communication Disorders, and Public Health.

In addition, they have doctoral programs such as microbiology and immunology, cell biology and anatomy, biochemistry and molecular biology, pharmacology, molecular and cellular physiology, toxicology and neurology. Because it is a public or state-sponsored university, Louisiana residents are given preference for admission. When it comes to accepting international students, they only accept 10% of the total population.

The application process is done through the AMCAS platform and prospective students are required to complete the MCAT, have pre-medical experience, receive letters of recommendation and more. The Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center at Shreveport accepts transfer students from other schools, but they must complete the first two years of their medical programs.

  1. Tulane University School of Medicine:

The university was founded in 1834 and is located in New Orleans. It is one of Louisiana’s leading medical schools and is the 15th oldest institution in the United States. They have dual degree programs like other Louisiana medical schools which include MD and MPH, MD and MBA, MD and Ph.D. program.

Also, they have accelerated medical program options for students to complete the course in different years – (MD/MPH) for four years, MD/MBA for five years, TAP-TP program for four years. These different programs combine an MD degree with a bachelor’s degree. In addition, there is a rural medicine program that offers students the opportunity to enroll in other universities outside of the US.

This is one of Louisiana’s medical schools with over 30 centers for teaching, research, and patient care. The school specialized in different areas such as mental health, cooking, hemophilia, cancer and many others. Every year the number of applicants wishing to enter the school increases. For example, in 2012, the total number of applications for admission to the school was 12,102 applicants, but 191 students were accepted.

Students are expected to go through the same application process by completing the basic admission requirements by submitting an online application, letters of recommendation, work experience and other documents using the AMCAS platform. You will be surprised that 600 students are surveyed every year. There is a test that students are encouraged to take, known as the CASPer test, to test their professional and personal skills.

Many years ago I decided to add a daily walk around our neighborhood to our morning schedule. We started out small by walking around our long block. Tips for Protecting Children from Environmental Threats

MADOU “Kindergarten No.

26 of Chelyabinsk”. “Angelic” Tournament

In our kindergarten there was a unique beauty contest – “Fairy Angel”. How many angels, marvelous and bright, settled in these couple of weeks on our three floors. It is almost impossible to say which of these creatures is better and which is worse, because they all have an unusually wonderful and angelic appearance.

The idea to hold such a competition belongs to the administration of the kindergarten. And, as it turned out, a lot of people liked it. The competition was not conceived as a New Year’s one, but now the whole atmosphere created by the angels in the kindergarten still smells like a New Year’s fairy tale.

Creations of human hands surprise with unearthly beauty. Probably because children’s clean hands were also involved in their birth. In almost all groups, both adults and children actively responded to the call to create their own family angel. Someone was so “fired up” with this idea that they brought the first crafts in a day or two after the announcement of the competition.

The competition was held in two stages: presentation – from 14.11 to 28.11.2016. and estimated – from 28.11. to 30.11.2016 Handed over creative work until November 28. Parents and children gladly supported our creative impulse and presented magnificent works in a variety of performance techniques for everyone to see. Here – and applications, and crafts made of fabric, and crocheting, and creations of their paper. In general, as the exhibition showed, the imagination of our children and their parents truly has no limits.

The main goal of the competition was to organize positive interaction between children, parents and caregivers in the course of creating an unforgettable angel. Unforgettable these angelic masterpieces, in fact, will be for all their creators – children, mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers, grandparents – all who put their efforts into creating this unearthly beauty. For a long time, these crafts will be remembered by both the audience and the jury, who faced the most difficult task – to determine the best where there are no worse ones.

Recall that the competition was held in several categories: “Angel of kindness”, “The most creative angel”, “Audience sympathy”, “Fairy tale angel” and “The most mysterious angel”.

Evaluation criteria in the angel tournament were:

  • Aesthetic design;
  • Originality;
  • Safety, strength and quality;
  • Use for making paper of various textures, fabrics of various textures, braid, lace, yarn, thread, buttons, beads, sequins, foil, etc.
  • The color of the product could only be white, silver or light blue;
  • The product had to have a label indicating the age group, full name of the author of the work.
  • Product size has been specified from 20 cm to 40 cm.
  • It was forbidden to use tin, needles, pins, broken glass and other piercing and cutting materials.

So, the results of our extraordinarily wonderful competition have finally been summed up. Those whom the jury decided to call the winners were determined. It turned out to be much more difficult than expected at first, so it was decided not to evaluate each craft separately, but the participation of the group as a whole. But the decision has been made, so we will announce it on our website.

Third place divided two groups with the same number of points –

the first junior group “Jellyfish” and the second junior group “Seals” 9000 3

The second place was taken by the second junior group “Dolphin”

First place – the first junior group “Ship”

And by nominations:

“Angel of kindness” – Diana M. , group “Sea Turtles”

Nomination “The Most Creative Angel” – Yaroslav Z. , group “Meduzyata”

Nomination “Fairy Angel” – Polina N. , group “Volna”

9000 2 Nomination “Spectator sympathy” – Nikolai Sh. , “Seals” group

Nomination “The most mysterious angel” – Evgeniya Sh. , “Scarlet sails” group

Congratulations to our winners!!!

And thank you all for your participation!!!

Each angel is a small masterpiece!

Anastasia Melnikova. Woman’s happiness. | Salatnik

Since dear members of the forum are very fond of the interview of the honored artist Anastasia Melnikova – I’m posting it! There are, of course, much fewer pearls here, and it is not new, but it is interesting because it was recorded just during the “ten-year amazing marriage” with Sergei Izotov. True, Anastasia denied having a husband then)))

And only she will decide whether to marry me. And while she is against it, not a single man will appear in our apartment.

Never lie to your child – this is the main principle of our relationship. I am sure that Masha is also honest with me. One evening I wanted to leave. My daughter was five years old, and she knew: her mother was either nearby or at work. That’s why she asked: – Are you on the set? — No, a handsome man was invited to a restaurant. She laid the child down, she kissed me: – Just please drive carefully. I was told that it was too early for my daughter to talk about her plans. She left and that’s it! But I do not consider it necessary to invent stories about urgent matters – I prefer to tell the truth. We made eye contact, and Masha understood: if I was invited and I agreed, then I need it. Even the daughter knows: first of all, I live in her interests. They say that by doing this I sacrifice my personal life, they condemn me for this. But I don’t hurt myself in any way. On the contrary, I get great pleasure from the fact that my whole world revolves around Mani. Today she is eighteen. How much of this inseparable, immersed in each other co-existence is left for us? On the strength of five years. Then the daughter will grow up and she will begin an independent life. If tomorrow I say: “I want to get married! I can’t wait any longer, let’s live as a big family,” Masha will agree. But I know that at this moment she will overcome herself. And I don’t want to live like this: to live and know that the child had to step over himself. Well, maybe no one wants to wait. There’s nothing you can do: that’s life.

What did you say when Masha first asked where her dad was? – She told the truth. As it was. The daughter is the only one who knows everything. Who in our history is right, who is wrong. But I can’t advise other parents to do the same. Masha took everything she heard adequately. And such parental frankness can frighten some of the children. Now everything is going well in my life. I always tried to convince my daughter that an incomplete family is by no means a disaster. Masha knows that she is surrounded by many adoring relatives. But the ideal is how it was in the family of my mom and dad. And everyone should strive for this.

Are you raising Masha in the same spirit as you? – My brothers and I were never taught how to hold a spoon and fork, how to sit, how to talk. The main thing was the education of feelings. Childhood friends confess: “We remember how a huge basket of sweets was put up in your house during the holidays. But the three of you were such well-behaved children, you never ran up to her until the guests tasted the treat. Parents gave us the main thing: the understanding that a person does not live for himself. They did not teach, they did not reprimand. They just acted in such a way that they became the best for all children in everything.

Acting is a difficult and dependent profession. But I, for one, am happy with it. And I am grateful to my parents for supporting me when I decided to enter the theater institute. Although the rest of the relatives were categorically against it and even scolded my mother and father for “connivance”, they did not take my desire seriously.

Daddy Rurik Alexandrovich died at the age of sixty-nine in one second. An absolutely healthy man suddenly fell, and his heart stopped. I am convinced that dad just handed it out to people. He was a surgical oncologist, a brilliant doctor. He has been gone for twenty-six years. Just recently, I met a woman whose husband has been living for thirty-seven years after his daddy had an operation. Mom Elena Olegovna, also an operating surgeon, a gynecologist, could make a serious scientific career. But she set priorities in such a way that the family was always in the first place. She put science aside for years. But we, the children, and our dad were constantly surrounded by attention. Mom did everything. In the mornings, she always prepared breakfast for the family, and for everyone – exactly what he loved. Dad left for work at ten in the morning. Mom started just an hour late. Their clinics were nearby in the village of Pesochny, where we have a whole cancer town. I will never forget how I once went to work with my mother: I had to pass some tests. Winter is on the street. We get into the car, dad pulls away, and only then mom exhales: “Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuus! Seems like it did.” This is about the fact that this time she miraculously redid all the household chores, fed her husband and children and is not late for work. And then mom… took out parts of her costume from her bag and started putting them on right in the car. There just wasn’t enough time in the morning! She combed her hair, tinted it already in the clinic. Our parents taught us by example. On my mother’s bedside table there were always the “Law of God” and the Bible. And we were baptized not when it became fashionable, but immediately after birth. In the USSR, the church was banned: parents’ colleagues did not know about christening. Otherwise, dad would have been fired from work with a bang. He sincerely believed in God, wore a cross. But at the same time he joined the party. And by the way, when everyone at some point renounced the party, he remained in its ranks to the end.

Did you baptize Masha? – Of course. In the church on Konyushennaya Square. My daughter always goes to communion with me. Sunday is the only day when she can sleep longer, but her daughter dedicates it to God. Often asks: “Mom, wake me up tomorrow, please. I have to go to the temple to confess.” She began reading the adult Bible at the age of seven, one chapter a day. If she didn’t understand something, she wrote to her spiritual mentor, Father Vladimir. They still communicate online. He lives far away, in the Makaryevsky Monastery, so we rarely see each other. The goddaughters are my younger brother Sasha and Svetlana Karmalita, the widow of Alexei German. Our family is united with the Germans not even by friendship, but by kinship. Uncle Lesha and I are the godparents of my niece Sasha. And many years ago, when the wonderful director Alexei German Jr. was born, my dad became his godfather. We lived in the same house, grew up together with Leshenka … I can’t survive the departure of Uncle Lesha. He was part of the family. They say that time will pass and it will become easier, there are no irreplaceable people. But dad, who has not been with us for a long time, is irreplaceable for me. Like Uncle Lesha.

I made arrangements for the burial of Alexei Yuryevich, that in the monasteries they would pray every day for the repose of his soul. Herman was an exceptional figure in the cinema world. Left school behind. He did not exist for a single day on the set without students. Most directors do not do this – they are afraid that talented young people will push them back. And Herman knew for sure: his niche would remain with him. Regardless of whether the film will lie on the shelf for twenty years or not, whether contemporaries will appreciate the picture. Aleksey Yuryevich passed on not only his soul and craft to a talented student: in the difficult nineties, he was looking for money for his debut films. Few lived like this. Alexei Balabanov and Irina Evteeva, directors recognized at world festivals, got the opportunity to make films thanks to Uncle Lesha. He found money, argued, shouted, made enemies. And in our profession, support is very important. It’s not worth talking about how big he was in the cinema. When at the Cannes Film Festival the audience did not accept the film “Khrustalev, the car!”, Leading film critics of France apologized to Alexei Yuryevich. Many of them called the film the greatest work of art. I am grateful to fate for giving me a meeting with Uncle Lesha and Aunt Sveta. And parents always treated them with warmth and tenderness. Dad married only at forty-one years old and spent his youth rather stormy. He was honest with his ladies, including married ones, he did not promise anything. But all his life he accompanied almost all the children from them. Helped everyone. There is a family legend that after the death of my grandmother, my mother was sorting through photographs and suddenly saw me … sixteen years old. Given that I was barely nine then, this girl was very similar to me – like an older sister. “I look at the photo, the last name on the back, I begin to compare the facts and I understand everything . ..” my mother said, laughing. “That’s why this girl immediately entered the university. That’s why she was visiting Rurik’s mother. Grandmother knew a lot of things, but did not reveal family secrets. And we could only guess what really happened. Parents taught me to be tolerant and kind. Regardless of whether they are blood relatives or not, other people’s children or their own. After all, even strangers may need your help. Today I am not only an actress, but also a member of the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg. They come to me with their troubles. Recently, there are especially many of those who were deceived by taking away an apartment. They sit and cry: “We are homeless, we have nothing to eat,” and they immediately throw accusations against me, “and you live in mansions on the Field of Mars …” I understand that this is unfair and the person says this out of desperation. And I still cry at home. Masha asks: “Mom, give up this job, don’t go to the next term.” But it is important for me to feel that at least someone can help.

I am convinced that if a person is in need, you should not think about your own interests, but do something for him. I remember sports fans yelling under our windows for days on end. And in the evenings, when they fell silent, music began to rattle in the restaurant in the park. Neighbors have small children, a blockade survivor lives nearby. At some point, I could not stand it, I went to this restaurant: “I also love Whitney Houston and the song from the movie“ The Bodyguard ”. However, people need to rest sometimes.” I was promised that there would be no more loud music. But they deceived: an hour later, the decibels went off scale again. She called: What happened? You howl again! – It’s the owners of the restaurant walking around. Nastya, I’m sorry, there’s nothing we can do. I say to my daughter: – Man, I’m going there. It was already half past two at night, and Masha tried to protest: “I’m afraid for you.” But I explained that not everyone in our house has double-glazed windows, and without them, life under such accompaniment is unbearable. Plus, tomorrow is a work day. It was really incredibly scary to talk, but the music was turned off. I hope Masha remembered this story. Following my parents, I never dictate to my daughter how she should act. I try to be a good example for her.

Did you yourself grow up as an obedient child? – Mom allowed me a lot. Try on her shoes, try on makeup. But once I was whipped, even in kindergarten age. In the 1970s, French perfumes and cosmetics were in short supply. Mom always let me play at her dressing table, there were an incredible number of interesting drawers. Once I cooked porridge for dolls from what I found there. When my mother asked: – Where are my powder and perfume? – honestly answered: – I don’t know, – because I had no idea what the name of what I used for culinary purposes was. “Porridge” was found in the dolls’ locker, and I was torn out – for having deceived. This case is still the subject of our controversy. Mom thinks: I was aware of what I was making “lunch”, I’m sure not. Mommy always adjusted to our schedule, but if she made any decision, it was not negotiable. Once she said that we were going somewhere, it means that everyone was going. Still decides how I dress, comb my hair. In this sense, Masha is given complete freedom. There was a case, she dressed up very brightly: a blue-red-white plaid shirt, huge boots on her legs, and a light scarf around her neck. Wow! It was as if a man ran past a rope on which clothes were drying, grabbed what turned up under his arm, and put it on. Masha asked: “Mommy, how are you?” – Kitty, do you like it? This is the main thing. My daughter said that she feels fashionable and stylish. And went to school in a new outfit. She came back almost crying: – Why didn’t you warn me that I looked like a crocodile? I answered: – You wanted to leave the house as a crocodile and were completely delighted with yourself. If I told you that you look terrible, you would cry. I decided that my mother did not understand you, and would have gone to school in a disgusting mood. If you put pressure on Masha, she will obey unconditionally. But he will worry. And I don’t want the child to suffer for my fleeting convenience. For example, it would be easy and convenient for me to send her to the country for the whole summer. I know that under the supervision of her adored grandmother and other relatives, she will be well-groomed, watered and fed. She has her favorite books there, a trampoline, a swimming pool, a dog, a horse, a river, a lake. But last year, Masha did not want to stay at the dacha for the whole summer. She rushed to a friend outside the city – it’s quiet, calm and easy. There’s nothing to be done: the girl grows up.

Are you becoming wiser? In general, did the birth of a child change you? – I always say that Masha was endured and given birth by her mother – she helped so much. But with the birth of my daughter, I really gained wisdom and I felt that I needed my own decisions, I could not continue to remain infantile. I felt a certain dissonance between the life I had always led and today. I plow like a man, earn money, renovate an apartment. And for my mother, I continue to be a little girl. It’s difficult. I used to think that my mother was always right. And only closer to forty did I believe that I had the right to my own opinion. I became independent for the sake of the child. Masha must feel strength in me.

Mom didn’t accept it right away? – Still corrects something, advises. And this is very important to me. I myself often ask her opinion. We have one nature of conflicts: love for each other. I, unlike my mother, am afraid to advise others. I see, for example, that a brother makes a mistake, but I don’t stop it – this is his life. I live by the principle: do not speak if you are not asked. And in a difficult moment, fly up and turn your shoulder. And I teach Masha the same thing: “We all have the right to make mistakes. You just need to realize what you are wrong in, ask God for forgiveness and move on.

Has Masha ever had to be punished? – Fortunately, there is nothing to punish her for. I have an angel child. I even try not to raise my voice to my daughter: she is very vulnerable. It is necessary to look strictly, immediately begins to worry. Once Masha answered me sharply: stress and heavy workloads at school had an effect. For the first time, the child growled: “I don’t want to-u-u-u-u!” I got lost. She didn’t say a word, counted to ten in her head, and went into the bedroom. And she just cried there. Children just don’t act up like that, if this happens, you need to look for the reason. On reflection, I realized that the baby just drove. And then the door swings open, Manya flies in: “Mom! Darling, I’m sorry, I offended you so much!

I pray that she will get married and have children. So that everything would work out for her, like my mother, both grandmothers, great-grandmothers: for them there was only one man for whom they lived. But if Masha meets the wrong person, I won’t stop her. If they get divorced, I will console without any “I told you!” But my daughter will definitely not choose who she needs, and not just anyone. I am convinced that it is better to be alone than to endure an unworthy person next to you. Children from her class constantly come to our house. Among them are many educated intelligent boys. From families that hold the same views as ours. I believe that Manya will never go over boyfriends, guided by their financial situation. She is a sensitive spiritual child, they scold me that my daughter grows up in a special world, cannot adapt to life, but once in a creative camp she existed with all the children in the same conditions. And she was immensely happy. My daughter inherited this ability from me – I also always knew how to feel happy everywhere. I lived with the feeling: if you have money, it’s good, if you don’t, we’ll survive. And took out the sewing machine. No one suspected that I knew how to sew, they whispered: “Oh, she has a dress from Cardin.” And Masha loves needlework, she made her first stitches at the age of two. Dad’s salary was good, sometimes bad. But no one stopped bleaching linens and tablecloths. There were no washing machines yet, and we always had a full bath. To bathe the children, my mother would put the laundry in basins, “rinse” us, and return to the laundry. I have inherited a love of cleanliness. I remember how in the first year of the institute we went to the collective farm, where we lived in barracks. But I didn’t stay in the mud for a minute! Of all the guys, only I knew how to maintain order and create coziness. After collecting potatoes, I returned, quickly boiled water on the stove, washed the floors and changed into clean clothes. I wore a white tracksuit and white socks. Fundamentally! Like the napkins on the bedside stool. The rest of the classmates could live and look like piglets. Of the products we had only potatoes and stew, but I managed to invent a lot of delicious dishes. When I bought the apartment where we live today, all the furniture consisted of a plastic table with chairs. Only the bathroom, Masha’s bedroom and the library were finished, where the white piano, which her mother had presented, stood alone. I slept on the floor. Gradually they bought everything, paid off their debts. But then… my oxygen was cut off. It is impossible to forget a terrible year and a half, when everything went out of life: position, money, friends. And everything possible was done so that I was not in this profession. But this is too hard to remember, and I will not go into details. The main thing is that the family remained nearby. Father. And, of course, Mana. I honestly told her then:

– Baby, we won’t be able to go to Europe this year. We will not see new cities, we will not visit museums. Masha answered with a laugh: – What a poor, unfortunate person I am, all the holidays I will have to go to the Hermitage and the Russian Museum! And also, perhaps, they will drive you to the Menshikov Palace! When a child reacts like this, the soul becomes easy. I recently took out a mortgage and bought an apartment for Masha. When she gets married, perhaps her daughter will have a choice: if she wants to, she will stay with us, or if she doesn’t, she will move to a neighboring house. I will do everything so that the child does not need anything. And if Manya meets a boy who goes to study further until he gets on his feet, I will support him. Of course, when I see that he can become a professional in his field. I will not feed the loafer.

How does Masha go through the difficulties of adolescence? – She grows up slowly, but I’m not worried: everything is individual. I see what is being done with Manina’s peers, how they swear, smoke, taste booze, and all this is a secret from their parents. It’s not like that with us – everything is allowed for our daughter. Would you like to try champagne? Please. But only at home, at the table. Masha, by the way, took a sip, and she did not like it. Until now, he asks for a “morsik”. Now it is difficult for her, sometimes she cries at night: the head is still absolutely childish, but the body is already a woman, the body is changing. The child cannot understand what is happening. He asks: “Why don’t the boys want to be friends with me? They invite me on dates and get offended when I refuse. But I like to just chat!” The boys already have love in their heads, but it is not ready yet. I think that my girl will remain a child for a long time. I’m not a hypocrite. But what is allowed for a boy is forbidden for a girl. I myself was brought up like that and I expect the same behavior from Masha. I am far from the ideas of feminism. Recently I was invited to the conference “Women of the World”. I go on stage, I say: “Ladies, let’s stop! Protect unfortunate men! Do you understand that we completely crushed them? A single father raising three children is not even entitled to maternity capital. Is it fair? At first there was dead silence. Then I was escorted with displeasure and no longer called.

Do you talk to your daughter about “adult” topics? – She was seven years old, we went to the pharmacy together, Manya saw unfamiliar objects in the window. She asked what it was. For a minute and a half, I thought about how to answer. To compose a beautiful legend – it seems to be too early for a child to think about such things? I decided to tell the truth. How I laughed when Masha exclaimed: “Oh, that’s how it is! The boys in the class were talking, but so stupidly that I didn’t understand anything.” I crossed myself: I wish I looked good, start talking nonsense when the child has already been enlightened!

She used to be very complex about her appearance: she grew plump. We went to a nutritionist, passed the necessary tests. It turned out that both had twelve extra pounds. And we took care of ourselves together. Now we never cook potatoes for a side dish, we buy only low-fat dairy products. We don’t eat bread. And we make pancakes from oat bran. Masha takes good care of herself: she swims a lot, does gymnastics. Bought a treadmill: she works on it when she teaches lessons. The result is there. This year, on Valentine’s Day, we were almost demolished the door: all the familiar boys were in a hurry to congratulate. They gave us bouquets and toys. We joked that because of such an influx of visitors, the riot police had to be called in to restore order. Masha was happy: the attention pleased her.

Do you remember your first love? – I was two and a half years old. Grandmother took me for a walk on the embankment. Suddenly, cadets of the Military Medical Academy meet us. Sailors in uniform, one more beautiful than the other. I murmured “uncles” and froze as if rooted to the spot. Until the whole system passed, it was not possible to budge. When they were sent to kindergarten, loves went in succession. Seryozha, Vanya, Petya … And with each one seriously, each time in the confidence that we will get married. But then Lesha came to the group, I thought: “Oh, and Lesha is better!” And everything started all over again. But seriously, all my life I prayed to God not to fall in love with someone who does not need it. And fortunately for me, the strong feelings that I experienced in my youth were mutual. Has Masha already had to face disappointment in love? – Yes. I immediately noticed that something was wrong with the child. Although Manya shared her grief not immediately. I stepped back, went the other way, then, as if jokingly, started a theoretical conversation about romance. So gradually everything became clear. After Masha told, tears welled up in her eyes. And I kept saying that absolutely everyone goes through such a feeling and, unfortunately, it often fails.

During adolescence, a child goes through a difficult period. It is not for nothing that there has been a lot of talk lately about the increased suicide rate among teenagers… – It doesn’t seem to me that there are more of them than in the Soviet years. In my youth, I heard dozens of stories with a terrible ending that happened to peers. Just then this problem was hushed up, but today it is being discussed. In no case do I want to blame the parents for everything: they are faced with the most terrible grief. But a child who is doing well will never think about leaving. Perhaps his family missed something, and the teenager could not share his problems. I’m “flying” with employment. She is heavily loaded with languages, in a theater studio, a gym, a swimming pool, a music school. And my daughter rides on our horse Cinderella. There is simply no time left for any nonsense. These are all huge loads. Of course, I’m worried about my daughter. But I don’t control Masha’s communication in any way, I don’t get into correspondence. I think that reading other people’s letters is unacceptable. I don’t need to read Mani’s messages to understand that something is wrong with her. It is enough to look into the eyes, to feel the mood. If parents do not see what is happening with their child, they simply do not want it: it is more convenient. And they gave birth to a child only in order to have someone to give a glass of water in old age. I don’t need this glass! Bring – it turns out, I did everything right. But no … well, I’ll blame myself: it means I made a mistake somewhere, I’ll have to take the water myself.

How does Masha build relationships with men who are in the house? – I will never bring a boyfriend or admirer into the house, only a lawful husband. That’s how I was brought up. I bear this surname and cannot disgrace it. Sometimes friends come. Friends-actors, partners in the theater stage and cinema often come to us. At the same time, I have my own relationship with Lesha Nilov, Seryozha Selin, Seryozha Koshonin and Andrei Fedortsov, and my daughter has her own. Masha is very friendly with Selin’s wife Anya. She is very young and closer to her age. She loves Sasha Kuznetsova, the daughter of Yuri Alexandrovich, Varenka Fedortsova. The girls talk like sisters. Sometimes my colleagues and I rehearse at our home. And I know that in order for men to work well, they need to be fed. Borscht, cutlets, pies, broth are put on the table. One day I didn’t have time to cook dinner. She flew into the apartment and saw that Masha had already done everything herself. She decided to arrange a French dinner: she poured onion soup from a tureen into plates, took French meat out of the oven. And an airy dessert was also expected. The guests ate and asked for more. The next day, an Italian dinner awaited them: spaghetti carbonara and panna cotta. My daughter and I have a marvelous union: I represent the “domostroevskaya” kitchen, she is innovative. Moreover, our cookbooks differ significantly from each other. In my opinion, it’s immediately clear where the recipes for cutlets are, where the dough is: the pages are stained with minced meat, flour, eggs. The child brings a skirt rack into the kitchen, attaches an open book to it, and places it at eye level. Cooks without touching the pages with your hands. I’m spinning my cutlets while my cat makes a stuffed apple with two kinds of meat and a rice pad in almond butter. I think: “Nastya, relax with your cutlets! Maybe they are delicious, but who needs them after such a miracle? I am learning cooking from Masha, she is from me, and it’s great. The next visit of my colleagues was crowned with an English dinner with stuffed eggplants. Masha is already acting in films, she is able to hold the audience. She realized this when she performed in front of an audience of ten thousand on Teacher’s Day. Then I had an overlay: in one evening I had to attend two government events at once, which could not be refused. One started at six in the evening at the Mariinsky Theatre, the other at seven at the Ice Palace. Mani rescued me! Imagine, they announce: “Honored artist, la-la-la, Anastasia Melnikova …” My daughter comes on stage and, with all her childish spontaneity, declares: “Mom is delayed at her previous job, so for now I will lead the concert.” Ten thousand people fell silent, and Masha read touching verses: “Do not dare to offend teachers, they put their whole soul, heart into us …” The women in the hall burst into tears. I arrived when Manya was talking on stage with the teachers invited to the holiday. The producer immediately ran up: he asked to hold a concert dedicated to the Ninth of May, together with his daughter. “Sorry, it was an exclusive,” we replied. I think it’s too early for her to dive into the profession. But one way or another, Masha saves me not only at home, but also on stage. There was another case when she closed the concert when I had to run away to shoot.

Is she a fashionista? — I have always tried to instill in my daughter a love for beautiful things. When Masha was just born, everyone asked what to give. I asked for money for the christening. I remember, five hundred dollars accumulated. They advised me to buy Finnish winter overalls. But I bought mink skins with this money, from which I sewed an envelope, instead of a zipper it had buttons made of good stones. My daughter was lying in the stroller like a doll, like a little furry mammoth. When she walked with her legs, she presented the first mink coat, in which Manya walked for up to three years. Then this mink was inherited for a long time: to the children of friends and acquaintances. But the older Masha, the more modest she becomes. Sometimes they ask: what is more important for you – women’s happiness or a career? I answer that the main thing for me is my daughter. But I confess that there is a dream – a complete family.

In just a few minutes, the pizza maker will knead the dough from selected flour, prepare the filling from fresh vegetables, tender meat or fragrant chicken, and send the dish to the oven for exactly 7 minutes. During this time, the dough will be baked and covered with a crispy crust. While the pizza is being delivered, the courier hurries to bring the order, the crust retains its crunch, and the dough is saturated with the smell and taste of the filling. The temperature of the filling, meanwhile, decreases from scalding to ideal, at which the taste of each ingredient plays and harmoniously combines with others.

Bachelor in France | Cost | Facts

Bachelor’s degree in France is an opportunity to get an education according to European standards and at the same time save money on education. All public universities in France are officially free. The tuition fee includes only the registration fee ( frais d’inscription ) – 3,114 USD/year. This is lower than in neighboring Spain and the Netherlands. In addition, France has some of the best educational programs in Europe. Especially in the arts, sciences and business.

The specifics of the Bachelor’s degree in France

The French Baccalaureate is called Lisance ( License ) and lasts three years. The program is divided into two stages. The first stage L1-L2 is a two-year general course that combines several major disciplines (for example, literature, ancient languages and history). This is a general base that prepares the student for the third year of higher education L3. At this level, all attention is paid to the study of one discipline – the main specialization of the student. According to it, he will be able to continue his studies in the magistracy [1] .

There are two paths to the Lisance degree:

    • Public Universities – the easiest and most understandable way. Universities offer standard three-year programs license . You can enter immediately after completing a complete secondary education in France or another country.
    • CPGE classes préparatoires aux grandes écoles are preparatory courses for higher schools ( grandes écoles ). They cover the levels L1-L2 and provide access to the main three-year program of high schools: the third year of Liance (L3) plus two years of master’s degree (M1-M2). Passing the CPGE is a prerequisite for studying in many grandes écoles . The exceptions are engineering and business schools, where you can enroll immediately after high school.

The format of classes and the learning process

The format of education in French universities depends on the type of educational institution, although in general it is built according to a single scheme. Most of the time is devoted to lecture cycles and independent work, but there are also seminars.

    • Lectures at universities are called CM ( Cours Magistraux ). They are led by full-time and visiting professors. As a rule, they take place in spacious amphitheater auditoriums. Interaction with the teacher during CM is minimal: students only listen and write down his words.
    • Independent work often becomes a problem for the student. Here they develop the ability to seek information and work without coercion from outside. The amount of independent work depends on the prestige of the educational institution. The higher it is, the more likely it is that students will be given freedom in learning. However, this freedom requires discipline.
    • Seminars are called TD ( travaux dirigés ) and TP ( travaux pratiques ). Up to 30 people participate in them: students make presentations and discuss.

In classes prépas all classes are held in small groups. It is easier to do this because there are fewer students in the preparatory courses than in the first year of the state university.

Self-organization is essential not only for studying, but also for the success of the semester exams ( partiels ). They usually take place in December and April. Most likely, French teachers will seem very strict in their assessments to a Russian student. They do not meet the needs of the students and can easily put a score below the passing one.

    Grading system in France

The grading system in France differs from the familiar five-point scale. The score is set from 0 to 20 points. The passing score is 10, but getting 20 is almost impossible. This score exists in theory, but teachers never give it in practice.
International students often find that their grades are much lower than expected. Getting at least 11 points at a French university is already a success. A score above 15 is very rare.

Statistics of deductions from French universities

Studying at a French university requires a lot of effort from the student. At the stage of admission to state universities there is no selection – screening of students begins in the learning process. The progress control system is quite strict: most students do not reach the required level and fail their semester exams. Sometimes only 30% of students pass to the second year of L-2 [2] . In other words, almost two-thirds of the applicants end up dropping out [3] .

In case of failing exams, the student has several options:

    • Transfer to another university with a loss of a year and start the program from scratch;
    • Stay at the university and repeat the academic year;
    • Leave the university and get a job so that you can resume your studies later.

In CPGE preparatory classes, dropout statistics are somewhat lower, with about a third of students dropping out. The workload there is also extremely high, but students classes prépas are better prepared for them. After all, in order to enroll in these courses, they have already passed a rigorous selection process.

Prospects after bachelor’s degree in France

Employment. France has the fifth highest unemployment rate among European countries [4] . Even perfect knowledge of French does not guarantee a job for a graduate. It is possible to find a job in the country immediately after a bachelor’s degree, but this largely depends on the student’s specialization. The biggest risk of being left without a job is among graduates of the humanities and social sciences faculties. For successful employment in any field, it is better to get a master’s degree ( Master) .

Master’s degree. After lisance at a public university, a student can continue their studies there or enroll in a master’s program at a higher school. So he will receive a diploma grande école , which is more quoted among employers. 9 out of 10 high school students get a permanent job within six months of graduation from [5] . The only condition for admission to the magistracy of any French university is the presence of a diploma in a related field. Change of specialty in the magistracy in France is not supported.

How I moved to work in France | DOU

Hello everyone! My name is Andrey, and for more than a year I have been working in Paris at Criteo. There were a lot of interesting things this year, but first things first.

Before moving, I worked as a C++ programmer since 2006 in Kyiv. At the beginning of 2015, I received an offer for an interview at Criteo. The company was just actively replenishing the staff, and they found me on Linkedin, where they offered to try to pass an interview. After the first Skype interview, I was invited to an insight in Paris. This was in February 2015. As you might have guessed, the interview went well and I received a job offer. It happened in just a couple of days. Then there was a very long procedure for collecting and processing documents and obtaining visas for me and my family (wife and daughter, who is now 4 years old). And so, on September 27, 2015, we unloaded from the plane near Paris and went to our temporary apartment.

    Visa

France has a Blue Card program for highly qualified specialists, this type of visa allows you to work throughout Europe (I didn’t check it, but this was the plan when the visa was invented), and also gives the right to work to your spouse. In 2015, the minimum salary threshold for obtaining this visa was 53,000 euros, which by French standards is a high salary, and few companies are willing to deal with it. I don’t know anything about other types of visas, so I won’t comment.

    About apartment

According to my contract, which was signed immediately after the job offer, Criteo provides temporary housing for three months to all employees who move from other countries. In fact, you can live in this temporary apartment for more than three months, but not more than six months. Why three months? The fact is that in order to rent an apartment in France, you will be required to provide a whole bunch of documents, including a certificate stating that you have a permanent job and income. And the first three months are a trial period during which you can be sent back to your homeland (and there have been such cases). Therefore, you can start looking for “your” (for which you yourself will pay) housing after passing the probationary period.

You may have heard that the apartments in Paris are mostly tiny, often studios – this is exactly the apartment we imagined when we drove. But we were very surprised when we entered the 4-room apartment, with two bedrooms, a dining room and a living room. The apartment had everything you need, as well as two fireplaces, individual heating and cleaning once a week. It was located a stone’s throw from Notre Dame, in a classic Haussmann house with high ceilings, a narrow staircase covered with a red carpet and wrought iron balconies. The upstairs neighbor turned out to be the sweetest woman with a cat and a parrot, she treated us to invitations to a wine exhibition and invited us to visit, the downstairs neighbor was a grump and a bore, working at night and wanting to sleep during the day, and so that complete silence 🙂

    Our temporary apartment

And now, when those very first three months have passed, and the trial period has been successfully completed, it is time to look for permanent housing. Three months turned out to be enough time to understand which areas are in Paris, where it is better to live, and where it is not worth it. We ourselves could not afford to rent such an apartment, as the company provided, and Paris seemed too cramped to us.

Having traveled around the nearest suburbs, we found the place of our dreams – it was love at first sight. A small town with beautiful houses, lakes with swans, peace and quiet, a park city. Within a month and a half, we found an apartment in this town, signed a rental contract, connected the Internet and moved.

It must be said that in the process of viewing, searching and selecting apartments, we once got to a group viewing, when there is a queue of 50 people, and everyone is looking at the apartment. And the closer to Paris, the faster the apartments fly apart. Candidates submit their packages of documents, and the owner chooses the one to whom he will hand it over. And here luck can turn its back on you if you are a foreigner, and even with children – there is a high probability that there will be a better candidate.

When looking for an apartment, we, of course, took into account that it would be convenient to get to work. When we lived almost in the very center of Paris, it took about 40 minutes to get to work (if there were no traffic collapses). Now, the travel time has increased to 50 minutes (again, under favorable circumstances). The difference, I think, is not significant.

    About moving

In addition to providing a temporary apartment for three months, the relocation package also included the transportation of our things and their storage in a warehouse until requested, the flight of the whole family, a small cash bonus and company shares. It is worth noting that, as experience has shown, the terms of the contract may differ from employee to employee. Criteo also took care of settling any documentary issues and initial adaptation. A specially hired person who speaks French and English helped us with finding housing, opening a bank account and placing the child in a school (an institution where children over three years old go is called a school).

Documentary issues were dealt with by an organization specializing in this, we only sent them the documents that were required, and at the appointed time we came to the rendezvous. This greatly simplified our move – it would not be easy to deal with all these issues on our own.

You also need to be prepared for the fact that everything here is done oh-oh-very slowly. When solving any issue or drawing up a document in France, you need to be patient.

Returning to the question of transporting things, I will tell you a little more. Our property was moved by Santa Fe Relocation Services – a couple of weeks before departure, you call the representative office of this company in your country, a manager comes to you, who writes down and estimates the amount of what you are going to take with you. It should be taken into account that at first you will live with the things that you take with you in your suitcase – you will receive the boxes later. Therefore, try to foresee exactly what things you need to take with you on the plane and what to pack. After assessing the volume of your cargo, together with the manager, you make an approximate list of all this, indicating the estimated value of each item within the amount of insurance for the entire cargo. On the appointed day (a couple of days before departure, for example), several neat and well-mannered movers come to you, all this stuff is cleverly packed into boxes and taken to the warehouse. I must say that they pack everything neatly and quickly, the most positive impressions from the work of this company.

    About work

The company I work for does retargeting advertising. Two stacks are used, mainly Hadoop + Java/Scala + Kafka and Couchbase + C# + RabbitMQ (yes, yes C#). It’s all distributed and loaded (otherwise, what’s the point?). There is also a team of researchers who come up with and test new approaches in Machine Learning. They try to convert everyone to their faith and constantly hold trainings, bootcamps and stuff like that 🙂 Although the entire realtime stack is written in C #, new projects try to do on something that runs on Linux, for this we have a Mesos cluster. When .Net Core becomes a mature technology, then most likely everything will be on Linux. We use git, the workflow is built on gerrit, and we do reviews in it. Of course, there are many internal tools that are written in the favorite language of the author of a particular tool.

Work is done in teams, each team has a specific area of responsibility. If you get bored in one team, you can switch to another. In addition, there is the Voyager program – you can go to work in another team for a few weeks or on a project, and then return. Your lead cannot refuse you to go to Voyager – the main thing is that the receiving party does not mind. A lot of cross-continental Voyagers are being made – Parisians go to Palo Alto, and Californians go to us. And in winter, everyone makes Voyagers to Grenoble – they go skiing there.

Traveling in France: Etretat (top left), Strasbourg (top right), Bordeaux (bottom left), Fort Boyard (bottom right)

10% of the time can be spent on your project, but the project must improve something in the company. I know at least two projects that have grown from 10% to a full-fledged product. Once a year, a hackathon is held, the results of which are summed up in six months – this gives teams time to finish or abandon their concepts. Sometimes what started at the hackathon is continued on the 10% initiative.

The office is not particularly remarkable, except for the roof – you can see all of Paris from it, and in good weather, many people have lunch or drink coffee on the roof. It should also be noted that the office is located very conveniently in terms of transport, there are several metro lines and a train station with electric trains to the suburbs nearby.

Despite the fact that the company is French, the language of communication is English, as many foreigners work here and there is an office in Palo Alto. About 20 Russian-speaking engineers work in the Paris office, on Thursdays we get together and have lunch together. There are also native English-speaking dinners (at which natives stop bleeding ears), Romanian-speaking, Spanish-speaking and, for sure, speaking something else 🙂

The normal working week in France is 35 hours. Since I work 40 hours a week, I am entitled to 2 additional weeks of vacation per year. In total, it turns out 7 weeks of vacation per year, which is wonderful 🙂

Criteo Social takes place about once every two weeks, where you can chat with colleagues in an informal setting and drink beer / wine. Big boozes are Criteo Summit and Criteo R&D Summit – employees from all offices come to some beautiful place (in France, since most of them work here) and talk for two days.

The company is still looking for new employees, so if you don’t mind testing yourself, rushing to Paris and expanding your horizons, send your resume 🙂

    Labor market

Paris has a lot of work for programmers, in terms of the number of vacancies from European cities, it loses only to Berlin, but, of course, in most cases, language skills are expected. Almost all grocery companies, many startups.

Due to powerful trade unions, it is very difficult and expensive to fire a person, so many companies offer temporary contracts (abbreviated as CDD – the French love abbreviations, they have abbreviations for everything), but only a permanent contract is suitable for obtaining a Blue Card visa and being able to rent a house (CDI).

If your significant other is not a developer, then, most likely, she will have to spend the first time learning the language.

    Schengen is always open

    Salary and taxes

Taxes must be subtracted from the amount specified in the contract. Social taxes, which are taken away even before the money comes to your account, are 23%. At the end of the year, income tax will have to be paid on this balance, which depends on many factors. First, he is progressive. Secondly, it depends on the total income of the family (including children) – that is, if the wife and children do not work, then it is correspondingly less. Thirdly, if you spend money on supporting relatives, repairing your home, buying tools necessary for your professional activities, then this money is not taxable. Since I started working in October, my entire salary for 2015 fell into the limit of amounts that are not taxed, I have not yet paid income tax. I think for 2016 it will be 7-9thousand tax.

    Peculiarities of mentality

I noticed several differences in people’s behavior. The French almost never scold children. No matter what they do, the parents remain calm: even if a child licks the floor at the station, they don’t care.

In transport, it is not customary to give up your seat to anyone, and if you have already entered the car, then do not even think of going inside – you should get out after 10 stops, so everyone goes near the door.

Breakfast is coffee with a croissant or orange juice. Lunch is exactly at 12 no matter what happens. All French people know about food and wine. Typical conversations during lunch are about food, the weather, and movies in cinemas.

Vacation is mandatory during school holidays, Paris is almost empty in summer. Tipping is very rare (I like it, no need to worry about how much to leave for a tip), in restaurants tips are always included in the price.

If you see a person in a hat, it is most likely a tourist. If in a hat and down jacket – a tourist from the FSU. When I came for an interview in February, the girls were walking through the wet snow in sandals (although it was February 14).

There are a lot of people with glasses – this was explained to me by more sensitive diagnostics and the fact that insurance covers glasses.

Everyone is calm, and it seems that no one is in a hurry. Everyone is very polite – an elderly woman drove her minicooper too close to the bus, which prevented him from turning, the bus driver did not swear at her, as I expected, but asked if madam could drive back a little, thank you, madam, have a nice day.

People don’t shy away from homeless people, they talk to them, greet them. In Paris, people smoke a lot on the street, perhaps even more than in Kyiv.

    Kitchen

Before I moved, I was convinced that French cuisine was a myth and that there really were no French dishes other than French fries, frog legs and tartare. I was wrong.
