Finding child care is a huge challenge for most working parents in the United States. The cost of child care, whether in day-care centers or home-based day cares, continues to rise: For a family with two working parents, the cost of a day-care center for one infant averages more than 13 percent of the household’s income, according to a 2018 report by Child Care Aware. Many families live in “child care deserts,” areas where there aren’t enough day cares, or those that exist are too expensive or low quality — sometimes both. Parents with nontraditional work hours or unpredictable schedules may also have difficulty finding a day care that meets their needs. Licensing, standards and ratings for child care centers vary from state to state, and it can be confusing for parents to find objective comparisons for their area.

For this guide, I spoke to a pediatrician, a child-care policy expert and a professor of early childhood education about resources and guidelines for parents navigating the world of child care. Although these experts acknowledged that there are a number of big challenges parents can’t fix on their own — including affordability, availability and overall quality standards — there are steps that parents can take to up their chances of finding a trustworthy day care. This guide focuses on day-care centers, but much of the advice is applicable to family day cares, which are operated out of an owner’s home, as well.

• Visit the center and observe interactions.
• Ask about play and discipline.

“Start looking for child care options as early as you can. Put out lots of feelers,” urged Katherine Glenn-Applegate, Ph.D., an associate professor of education at Ohio Wesleyan University who has researched how families choose child care. (She wrote in The New York Times about her own challenges in finding care for her son. ) Researching and applying early is especially important if you have an infant; fewer spaces tend to be available because infants require lower caregiver-to-child ratios.

All the experts I spoke with said looking for a licensed day care should be a first step. Many parents are surprised to learn that not all states require child care programs to be licensed, and standards not only vary but also can be rudimentary. “Licensing is a baseline, a bare minimum,” Dr. Glenn-Applegate said.

Consider contacting a child care resource and referral agency, which can help you decipher accreditation and licensing requirements, quality ratings and other child-care center policies. Licensing requirements can vary widely from state to state. For example, for a group with 2-year-olds, New York allows no more than five children per caregiver while Florida allows 11. These agencies can also help you find day cares that fit your budget, plan out schedules and start dates, and learn whether you’re eligible for tax breaks or other fee assistance. They are “one of the best kept secrets for selecting child care and navigating the system,” said Michelle Noth McCready, deputy executive director for Child Care Aware, a membership organization that works with local resource and referral agencies. “You can talk to a live person who is knowledgeable about the child care landscape in your community.”

Talk to your pediatrician during your child-care search, advised Dr. Elaine Donoghue, a pediatrician and former co-chairwoman of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Council on Early Childhood. A doctor’s input is especially important when children have any medical conditions — for example, asthma, seizures or allergies — that could affect their health and safety in child care.

If you plan to send pumped breast milk to the day care for your child, find out how the staff store, label, handle and prepare breast milk, Dr. Donoghue said: “If they have a lot of infants who are breastfed, how are they making sure the babies get the right milk?”

Child Care Aware has checklists of questions to ask and resources to consider for parents seeking child care.

Ask about the center’s policies around staff health and hygiene, Dr. Donoghue advised. “A lot of parents don’t know how important handwashing and staff immunization is,” she said, noting that preventative measures can be more effective at stopping the spread of illness than strict policies about sending mildly sick kids home.

“The kid with the runny nose has probably already infected all the kids in child care before they get sent home, so all that does is inconvenience the parents,” Dr. Donoghue said. “It doesn’t contribute to the greater health in the child care setting.”

You should ask about the center’s practices for food handling and safety and about the nutritional quality of meals. It’s also important to know about the center’s emergency plans and preparedness, both for emergencies involving a sick or injured child and for natural or other disasters. “If they have no plan, that says they might not be diligent enough,” Dr. Donoghue said.

Once you’ve narrowed down your options, plan to spend at least an hour visiting each center you’re considering, McCready advised. Go to the center during operating hours and make sure to see the specific rooms where your child would be, as well as any outdoor space. Pay attention to the child-to-caregiver ratio — the A.A.P. has recommendations based on age.

One of the most important things to watch for is how the teachers interact with the children, Dr. Glenn-Applegate said. “You can have beautiful shiny cubbies, bright shiny toys and a lovely playground, but that’s not going to be as important as the interactions between the child and the adults,” she said.

Teachers should be engaged with children instead of just supervising them, she noted — for example, you’d want to see teachers on the rug building a block tower with children rather than just sitting nearby. Dr. Glenn-Applegate cited research showing that education such as a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education, rather than length of experience, correlates with higher quality interactions between teachers and children. Don’t be afraid to ask for teachers’ credentials.

Nelli Coral, 33, used Google Maps to find day cares near her home in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia and visited the ones with good user reviews — about 10 centers in all. “For contrast, I checked a day care that didn’t have very good reviews. Just by being there, I understood why,” Coral said.

Trust to your instincts, like Coral did during the site visit. “If your gut feels a little queasy about something, really pay attention to that,” Dr. Donoghue said.

Find out the center’s practices around play, especially during outdoor time. “Make sure that kids go outside and that they don’t have silly policies about not going outside when the temperature is below a certain degree,” Dr. Donoghue said. You should also ask about screen time: “You don’t want them sitting there all day watching videos.”

It’s crucial to know how the day care handles disciplinary problems and whether it has access to specialists who can help a child with challenging behaviors, Dr. Donoghue noted. If a day care has a history of expelling young children for behavioral problems, that may be a red flag. “If there is a child who has challenging behaviors, can they figure out what is triggering them and preempt them rather than kicking them out?” Dr. Donoghue asked.

The issue of placing a child in a kindergarten for Ukrainians is often a top priority. If you want to settle down in Poland on a long-term basis, then you definitely need someone to take care of your child while you are looking for a job. We will tell you how to find an appropriate preschool institution and what are the current rules for admitting young Ukrainians to Polish kindergartens.

Rules for admission to kindergarten in Poland for Ukrainian refugees

In Poland, children of Ukrainians are admitted to kindergartens under the same conditions as children of Polish citizens. This means that if necessary, you can send children aged 3 to 5 years to kindergarten or nursery. On the other hand, according to Polish law, children who have reached the age of six are required to attend a so-called preparatory school, that is, to be trained for a year to enter primary school.

In order to enroll a child in kindergarten, you need to collect the following documents:

1. Application form in Polish (issued directly at the institution where you want to enroll your child).
2. Your PESEL number and your child’s PESEL number.
3. The series and number of your passport.

How is recruitment for a kindergarten in Poland?

We are currently recruiting for the 2023/2024 school years, for which children from Ukrainian families can apply. When enrolling in Polish kindergartens and nurseries, an evaluation system of points is used, which means that children receive priority:

• from large families;
• with disabilities;
• with parents or siblings with disabilities;
• raised by one of the parents;
• from foster families.

All documents and applications must be submitted in Polish and preferably translated by a sworn translator. If you have such documents, it is better to add them to the application for admission to kindergarten (certificate of disability, certificate of divorce, separation or death of a spouse), this will significantly increase the child’s chances of being enrolled in a group. It should be borne in mind that applications for admission to a preschool institution of children from Ukraine will be considered on a general basis.

It is also worth noting that kindergarten registration can take place both online and in stationary mode. Therefore, ask in advance how the registration takes place in the educational institution of your choice.

If the registration takes place in a stationary mode, you need:

1. Come to the kindergarten of your choice.
2. Take a sample application for admission to kindergarten.
3. Complete the application and bring it to the school.

If the appointment is online, you need:

1. Go to the website of your city or commune.
2. Find a kindergarten enrollment platform on this site.

Even public kindergartens charge parents a certain monthly fee. These are relatively small amounts, but you should consider these additional costs in your budget. Ostrovki is one of the few estates-dachas preserved in the Tver region. The buildings of the country estate were created in the period from the middle. XIX to the beginning XX centuries At the beginning of the 20th century, the owner of Ostrovki was a prominent scientist, archaeologist, collector, writer and explorer of the Russian North and Siberia A.A. Shirinsky – Shikhmatov, his coat of arms still flaunts on the facade of the building, above the main entrance.

As befits a real dacha, its structures are organically woven into the surrounding nature, which has been ennobled near the dwelling. In the planning concept, one can feel a subtle calculation for the change of specific pictures.
Perhaps the most important role in this “natural setting” is assigned to the large mirror of Lake Imolozhye, which simultaneously served as the northern border of the estate. The lake through the stream fed an oblong manor pond, the bed of which is located to the south of the house.
The house itself consists of several buildings merged together, standing in one line. These are residential wooden and brick houses, a one-story eastern wing and a heavily rebuilt greenhouse. In the vicinity, several modest buildings for household purposes have been preserved.
Not reaching 1 km to the estate, to the right of the road, among the birches, one can hardly notice the ruins of the brick Assumption Church, conceived by Prince. Shirinsky-Shikhmatov as a temple-museum, where he kept part of his rich icon collection.

From scientific sources: Ostrovki

One of the few estates-dachas that have survived in the Tver region was founded in the middle of the 19th century. and completed at the beginning of the 20th century. and belonged to Prince A.A. Shirinsky-Shikhmatov, a member of the Tver Scientific Archival Commission, the owner of a valuable collection of ancient Russian art. In the compositional solution of the complex, the main role was assigned to the surrounding nature and picturesque views. The estate is located in a forest, which was well-groomed at one time, on the southern shore of a large bay of Lake Imolozhye. The lake serves as the northern boundary of the estate, the stream flowing into it as the western boundary, there are no pronounced boundaries from the east and south. At the stream, a wide linden alley begins, crossing the estate obliquely and leading into the forest. To the south of the alley stretches an array of mixed forest, from the north there is a birch grove, and in it there is a pond elongated from east to west. To the west of it, a group of heavily overgrown mounds has been preserved. Behind the birch grove the alley forks. The poorly preserved northern branch of the alley, bypassing two wooden outbuildings, leads to the main house, in front of which the alley widens, forming a platform for the front yard. The eastern branch of the alley passes by the third wing and leads into the forest. In a birch grove, near the house, there is a brick obelisk. There was also a park sculpture, of which only the pedestals have survived. Apart from the estate, on the edge of the forest, there is a 1901-1904 Assumption Church, a kind of temple-museum, which contained icons from the collection of Shirinsky-Shikhmatov.

Consisting of volumes of different sizes and different times, the main house in the Russian style is stretched along the shore of the lake. By the second half of the XIX century. include a wooden one-story residential building with a mezzanine and a wooden one-story eastern wing, connected by a heavily rebuilt volume of the greenhouse with brick end walls. The wooden walls are sheathed with wood. Strict facades are cut through with rectangular windows, pediments and attic windows are generously decorated with sawn valances, lintels and towels. A miniature balcony is placed in the pediment of the wing. The volumes partially preserved the old interior walls. On the main floor of the house, an enfilade can be traced from the south side. From the west, a brick unplastered one-story volume with a semi-basement adjoins the wooden house. The rectangular volume with the entrance vestibule is completed with a frieze of semicircular kokoshniks, which are also lunettes of the high windows of the main floor. Gable sandriks are placed above the windows of the semi-basement. The attic above the entrance risalit is decorated with a large kokoshnik with a stucco coat of arms of the Shirinsky-Shikhmatovs. Both floors are separated by a longitudinal capital and several transverse walls. The four high halls of the main floor are covered with Monier vaults. In the semi-basement there are eight rooms and a central corridor, covered with box and bow vaults with formwork. Metlakh floor tiles, a dolomite staircase, painted stucco cornices, double-leaf entrance doors with an imitation of square rustication on the outside and juicy three-dimensional carvings with Russian motifs inside have been preserved. The walls were previously painted with views of the estate.

Three wooden one-story residential outbuildings are boarded. Two outbuildings, standing on the road to the main house, are decorated with sawn architraves, carved shoulder blades, valances, berths and towels. The more modest southern wing has simple plank architraves.
The Russian-style brick Assumption Church has been preserved in ruins. The walls are dissected by shoulder blades into strands, completed with semicircular zakomaras. Narrow arched windows are framed with columnar architraves. The arched opening that led from the temple to the apse is decorated with a perspective portal on the inside.

Pyaterochka and Liza Alert launched Security Islands in 65 regions

X5 Retail Group announces the expansion of the joint project of the Pyaterochka retail chain, the Missing Persons Search Center (TsPPL) and the Liza Alert search and rescue team to all regions where the retailer operates. “Safety Islands” are already operating in more than 14,500 supermarkets in 65 constituent entities.

“Safety Island” is a special area in every Pyaterochka store, equipped with a distinctive sign in the form of an orange geolocation pin, which is a guide for all lost people. Having entered any Pyaterochka, a lost person can contact a store employee or wait until he is offered help. About 50 thousand people working in the retail chain have completed a full course of training and are now able to identify a lost or disoriented person and know how to act if they are found on the territory of the supermarket. The store manager reports each such case to the CPPL hotline, whose specialist, depending on the situation, calls an ambulance, the police, or sends a representative of the Liza Alert squad to the supermarket.

Pyaterochka is the first retail chain to launch a similar project with Liza Alert. It is focused on helping people with dementia, as well as children who may get lost. According to Liza Alert, over 100,000 people are lost every year in Russia. Thanks to the “islands of safety”, every lost elderly person or child will be helped to return home. During five months of testing, which took place in 2,600 stores in Moscow and the Moscow region, assistance was provided to 118 people, 13 of whom were urgently hospitalized in serious condition.

In addition, the trading network and the search and rescue team launched a special portal liza.5ka.ru, where everyone can find the addresses of Pyaterochka stores that provide assistance to lost people, get useful information about the project, help disoriented people, read stories of volunteers and learn how you can contribute to the search for missing people.

Terrible place. My daughter came home with a wet diaper every time but pretty bad too like she had been sitting in it for hours. They just pretty much leave the kids in a gated off room. The workers are inattentive and just don’t even seem qualified to work there. Do yourself a favor and find somewhere else. I wouldn’t recommend them if you paid me.

What is NeighborSchools?

Hey there, nice to meet you 👋 We’re a new-ish startup that helps new-ish parents find daycare.

We know how hard finding good child care can be – especially for first-time parents. But really good care is what gives you the peace of mind to go back to work and feel confident that your child is getting the stimulation, socialization, and support they need to learn and grow.

So we created NeighborSchools to make this piece of parenthood a whole lot easier. We say “easier” because, let’s be honest, it’s still a big thing to figure out, but working together we can help you find some good options, understand the whole process, and choose a program you’ll feel really good about.

How’s it work?

Most first-time parents don’t know exactly what they’re looking for, so we created a simple survey that will ask you questions about your lifestyle, your daily routines, and your preferences for child care. We’ll then share 3 personalized recommendations that we think might be a good fit. We’ll also give you a timeline that maps out when we would suggest you start touring programs, choose a daycare, and pay a deposit to secure a spot. Your timeline is based on when you want to start care – so you set the pace, and you decide when you’ve found the right match.

Is there a cost?

Nope. Our daycare recommendation service is free for parents. The other half of our business is helping these small-scale daycares with software and services that handle all their administrative tasks, like online contracting, payment processing, and licensing requirements. Before NeighborSchools, services like these were only designed for large corporate child care centers, and part of our mission is to level the playing field for small, independent child care programs. That’s why we picked the name NeighborSchools – we’re all about making child care more personal, more human, and more equitable for the incredible individuals who do this work and care for our children.

How do I know if I’m ready to take the survey?

Generally, if you’re here, you’re ready. The survey lets us give you 3 recommendations to consider, but it’ll also help you better understand what factors to consider, and what questions to be asking right now. It’s simple things like where you live, your child’s date of birth, when you want to start care, and if you have any preferences around program philosophy or language of instruction. If you’re planning 6+ months ahead, it’s a great way to get started, and if you’re hoping to start daycare in the next 2-4 months, it’s definitely time to get started. How do I know if a daycare has openings?

Each program has a limited number of spots for each age range, so we need to know your schedule and child’s age before we can share availability. The survey covers these basics, as well as factors like drop-off and pick-up times to make sure that recommended programs fit your daily routine. Once we know your child’s age and schedule we can share rates and costs as well.

Day cream + night cream = complex care

So what is the fundamental difference between a day cream and a night cream? The action of the day cream is aimed at strengthening the natural protection of the skin, which is exposed to external factors. One of the most aggressive effects is UV radiation, which leads to photoaging ¹ . The night cream is designed to restore the skin. It contains nutritional and antioxidant components, the effectiveness of which is especially high during rest. It is at night that the main regeneration processes take place that renew the skin and prepare it for the next day ² .

Day and night face cream complement each other’s action and work most effectively in combination. Meet Emily Aiken, Our Center Director

Meet Emily Aiken! She is the Center Director at Batavia KinderCare in Illinois. Emily attended National Louis University, where she earned a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Administration. She has been with KinderCare since 2009 and has worked in the Early Childhood Education field since 2002. Every day, Emily looks forward to providing children with a nurturing learning environment. “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” – Nelson Mandela. Outside of work, Emily enjoys spending time outdoors with her family and exploring nature.

Infant Programs (6 weeks-1 year)

Leaving your baby in someone else’s care is a big step. Everyone at our
centers—most importantly, our naturally gifted infant teachers—will work with
you to make sure the transition goes smoothly. When you step into our infant
classroom, you’ll see how much we want your infant to feel safe, loved, and
ready to explore their world.

Toddler Programs (1-2 Years)

Everything in our toddler classroom is designed for little explorers. That’s
because a lot is going on at this age. When your child is wandering all over the
place, that means they’re learning and discovering new things every day. We’ll
help them explore their interests (and find new ones!) as they play and learn.

Discovery Preschool Programs (2-3 Years)

This age is filled with so much wonder and curiosity. That’s why we offer a ton
of books and toys and bring artwork down to kids eye level. Children in
discovery preschool also begin to learn how we all work together in a
classroom. Simple math and science, pretend play, and group play help them
get used to a more structured school setting.

Preschool Programs (3-4 Years)

This age is all about expression, when kids really start to form their own ideas
about what they want to play and how they want to create. Every day in our
preschool classroom, your child will explore science experiments, create
artwork, and play pretend—all the skills needed for their big next step:
kindergarten!

Prekindergarten Programs (4-5 Years)

When you walk into one of our pre-K classrooms, you’ll see artwork and
writing displayed around the room. Labels are everywhere to help kids connect
letters with words. You’ll also see pictures on the walls that reflect the families
in our community. Your child will also deepen their knowledge in language,
math, science, Spanish, and social skills.

Before- and After-School Programs (5-12 Years)

You can count on us to provide reliable care for your school-ager while you’re
at work, with safe transportation from our center to your child’s school and
back! Whether your child wants to start a drama club, build a volcano, or
create a comic book, they will have a place to follow their dreams. Your child
will start and end the day with a whole lot of fun!

School Break Programs (preschool, prekindergarten, and school-age)

Winter break, spring break, summer break—when school’s out (but you still need to work), you
can count on KinderCare to provide a safe and supportive learning environment that’s focused
on fun. We welcome children ages 5–12 during school break times and make sure they have a
sensational, screen-free experience they won’t forget.

Learning Adventures – Enrichment Program

Cooking Academy™ (3-12 Years)

In Cooking Academy, kids learn new recipes from cultures around the world and
develop a healthy relationship with food. They’ll whip up everything from Southwest
rainbow lettuce wraps to pumpkin muffins, building their skills in STEM, communication,
and more along the way. And yes—little chefs get to eat their culinary creations!

Music Explorers™ (2-4 Years)

KinderCare families are already giving a standing ovation to our newest Learning
Adventures program: Music Explorers! Kids will learn to sing, move, listen, play
instruments, and even create their own tunes. Our original curriculum blends math,
science, social studies, literacy, and mindfulness (think yoga!) for a uniquely KinderCare
way of learning the foundations of music.

Phonics Adventures® (2-4 Years)

Learning how to read is a whole lot of fun at KinderCare! We help kids grow to love
books and words (and get ready for kindergarten) in our Phonics Adventures program.
From discovering the basics of vowels to practicing poetry, kids learn all about letters
and sounds in small-group lessons made just for their age group. (Bonus: Kids who
attend our phonics program are more prepared than their peers for school—and we
have the data to prove it.)

• A few years ago our family moved from Billings, Montana to Illinois. It was coming back home for my husband and I, but it was leaving the only home that my children had ever known. In Montana we had a wonderful day care where my two older children had grown up and we were all very close with the providers there.   We were lucky to make a visit to the Batavia KinderCare and meet Emily, the Center Director. Immediately she made us feel welcome and at home in her center. The center is very clean and organized. That is something that is very important to me especially.

  Our kids blended into the environment quite well. They were happy to get there and sad to go home. Our two older children learned leaps and bounds from the curriculum at the center. My son, who is in Kindergarten now, is at an amazing educational level and I owe that to Kinder Care. My daughter, who will be in Kindergarten in the Fall, I feel, will also have this same advantage when she enters school.
   
  The staff at the Batavia Kinder Care is amazing! Absolutely one in a million! They are excited to be there every day. They always have smiles on their faces and they are always full of energy, ready to take on the day and all that it brings. They care about their jobs, they care about their center and they care about the kids. And that shines through each and every time that I interact with any one of them. Having three kids in the center, I find that our kids have worked with pretty much everyone there. They know our kids, they know their likes and dislikes, they know their habits and their routines. And the very best part is that they all work well together. You can truly see that they are one team, or even one family. You never have to worry, “Oh I told someone about something, do you think that they will tell this other person about it as well?” They always do. They communicate with one another on everything.
   
  Our youngest daughter will be the only one left there in the Fall. However, we will always be back each summer for camp. Camp is always something great to look forward to. The field trips that they set up, the activities on the summer curriculum, being outside and having a great time. Summer Camp at KinderCare is something that my kids definitely look forward to.
   
  It is never a fight to get my kids in the door at KinderCare. And as I had said above, they are usually sad when it is time for them to go home. But that is the way that it should be. They even like Ms. Maria’s cooking better than mine! I am glad that we found such a great fit for our kids at the Batavia KinderCare Center. I know that every day my kids are safe, very well cared for and happy while they are there.

We provide nutritious meals and snacks developed by a registered dietician to meet the needs of rapidly growing bodies and minds. If your child has special dietary requirements and you would prefer to bring in their lunch, please make arrangements with the center director.

Does my child need to be potty-trained?

Every child begins toilet learning at a different age. Until your child shows an interest in toilet learning, we’ll provide diaper changes on an as-needed basis. When your child shows an interest, we’ll discuss how to work together to encourage toilet learning.
