Programs – Summer and School Year — PEAK

PEAK is a progressive, year-round program. Year after year, our participants have access to a variety of activities in different locations that allows them to discover where they shine. While our annual program offerings are flexible and responsive to what our kids and families need at the moment, PEAK has six major program areas: Day Camps, Resident Camps, Teen Programs, Community Programs, School-Based Programs, and Expeditions.

DAY CAMP

Our Day Camp program, housed in our program center in Milwaukee, is offered to participants in Grades 1- 8 and offers sessions by cohort and topic area in the summer months. Day Camps encourage participants to explore their interests and build on their strengths while learning more about the Milwaukee community.

Our Pathfinders experience fun outside of their immediate communities through excursions around Milwaukee.

RESIDENT CAMP

Lake Valley Camp (LVC), PEAK’s resident camp, sits on 650 natural acres of rolling hills and forest in Boscobel WI. LVC operates seasonally, offering multi week sessions in the summer and weekend retreats in the spring and fall. Examples of program areas offered at LVC are nature/ecology, garden, equestrian, performing arts, visual arts, outdoor living, boating, swimming, archery, and team sports.

Participants are often given the opportunity to lead songs, skits, and other activities while at resident camp.

TEEN PROGRAMS

PEAK provides a variety of programs for high school students to connect and grow. The Leadership Trainee (LT) Program, our flagship high school program, is based on professional development through paid internships, with accompanying coaching and training, and community service.

Our Leaders-In-Training bond and build relationships during their 2 week internship at our Lake Valley Camp.

COMMUNITY PROGRAMS

Our Community Programs harness the resources of our city and activate our program center year round to provide a platform for exploration, leadership and connection. Action projects, community service opportunities, and exploration of the various activities, destinations and cultures in Milwaukee are essential components of the programs. Community programs includes events, drop-in programs and project-based learning programs for all ages.

Kids from the Tiefenthaler neighborhood connect with PEAK for activities, free lunch, and a sense of belonging.

SCHOOL-BASED PROGRAMS

School-based programs provide students with authentic leadership opportunities that provide the skills and support to help them improve their school climate and culture. PEAK offers partner schools a platform for youth-led projects that require reflection on issues that matter most to the students and guide them in the necessary planning, collaboration, and decision-making to execute effective projects.

Culture Keepers ready to make a difference at Prince of Peace, one of our community partner schools.

EXPEDITIONS

PEAK expeditions push perceived limits through exploration of places that are not readily accessible. From bike camping to travel camp, these programs present natural challenges intended to stretch comfort zones and empower youth to overcome uncertainty and fear.

Participants traveled to Potawotomi Camp Grounds for a week of new experiences such as cliff diving in Lake Michigan, bike riding on Washington Island, ziplining, kayaking, and connecting with a diverse group of peers.

1 direction
Robotics based on Lego WeDo 2.0

Lego WeDo 2.0 – a modern multifunctional robotics kit, with which it will be easy for children to learn fundamentals of mechanics, electronics, programming and design. In the classes at the camp, children will learn about the mechanisms that exist around us and create several assemblies. The guys will be able to “revive” each model in a visual programming environment.

Course 2
Python Basics and Minecraft Programming

This course combines the popular programming language Python and the sandbox game Minecraft to make learning even more fun. Here the guys will get acquainted with the basics of programming in Python and learn how to create mods for the Minecraft virtual world with its help. Each participant of the camp will be able to master the basics of Python development without breaking away from their favorite game.

3rd direction
Blender 9 3D Modeling0068

Blender is one of the most popular programs for creating 3D models and computer graphics. It creates objects and locations for video games, interior prototypes and much more. In this direction in the camp, children will work with 3D objects: assemble them into a single scene and render the resulting 3D model.

Lego WeDo 2.0

During the shift at the camp, the student will master the programs and design, which will allow the young genius learn new things about the world around him, creating and “revitalizing” various models and designs. Children will develop fine motor skills and building skills in building Lego, associative thinking and computer skills in writing a program for a robot in the easy-to-understand visual programming environment of Lego WeDo 2.0.

Methodical plan:

  • “Dolphin” assembly;
  • Crocodile assembly;
  • Race Car Assembly;
  • Harness assembly;
  • Lamb assembly.

Camp activity (example):

In one of the Blender 3D modeling sessions, children learn how to add lights to a scene, adjust their brightness, and change their color. Next, they have to add interesting light accents to their project.

The teacher tries to accompany the theory with examples, to move from discussion to practice – this way the children will quickly master the material, and most importantly, they will become interested in new features of the programs. Teachers check the work of each student and suggest how to correct the shortcomings.

What will the child learn at the end of the program?

  • Learn the basics of robotics, the basics of visual and text programming;
  • Get acquainted with the interfaces and basic tools of Lego WeDo 2.0, Minecraft and IDLE (editor for Python), Blender;
  • Learn how to work with 3D models, render them;
  • Will create the first projects: robots, programs in Minecraft, 3D scene;
  • Will be able to develop spatial thinking, improve logic and the ability to compose algorithms;
  • Will be able to understand what direction he likes the most and what he would like to develop further.

A new veteran “sabotage” with the renaming of Stalingrad is expected in Volgograd

In Volgograd, the scandal with the renaming of the hero city to Stalingrad may enter a new round. The authorities today will have new veterans, at whose request something can be done – Leningrad.

Today, June 15, a meeting of veteran organizations of St. Petersburg with deputies of the Volgograd Regional Duma is scheduled. The corresponding item is included in the schedule of meetings of committees, working groups, commissions and fractions of the regional parliament, signed by Vladimir Shefatov, head of the staff of the Volgograd Regional Duma.

Tatyana Bukhtina, chairwoman of the Duma Committee on Culture, Affairs of Nationalities and Cossacks, Issues of Public Associations, Religious Organizations and Information Policy, was appointed responsible for the event. The meeting is to begin at 2:30 pm in the session hall of the reg-parliament.

The program of the visit of representatives of the veteran community of the northern capital is unknown. However, the previous visit of veterans from another region – specifically the Kemerovo region – turned into a grandiose scandal that split the progressive Volgograd public into two warring camps.

On the 80th anniversary of the start of the strategic offensive operation of the Soviet troops, code-named “Uranus”, conditional veterans – on their behalf, the head of the city veteran cell Alexander Strukov, who was born in general at 1951 and has nothing to do with the Great Patriotic War – they asked Governor Andrei Bocharov to rename Volgograd to Stalingrad. They were joined by guests from Kuzbass, including a real veteran, a 93-year-old front-line soldier.

– Stalingrad is a symbol of victory. We, the veterans of Kuzbass, support this request, and also stand for returning Stalingrad’s name, – said Anatoly Terekhov.

Andrey Bocharov, as is customary in Volgograd, could not refuse veterans, but ordered that before putting the issue of renaming to a referendum, to interview the population. For this, a whole Council was created, the position of which, however, is not recorded anywhere, and which has been studying for more than six months whether Volgograd residents support the renaming. Vivid emotional speeches for the preservation of Volgograd, his current name, the Council did not stop, and he continues to study something. Although VTsIOM has already considered that Volgograd residents want to continue to remain Volgograd residents, not in a hurry to become Stalingradized.

According to rumors, if there is a referendum, it will be on the 81st anniversary of the counteroffensive.
