Welcome to First Start Children’s Center, a program of Second Start offering care to children 6 weeks to 10 years, during the school year, and 6 weeks to 12 years of age during our Summer Program. Our large, open, air conditioned classrooms, spacious cafeteria and two new, separate, age-appropriate playgrounds are licensed by the NH Departmres breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack for all our children. Our menus are planned according to the dietary guidelines set by the NH Department of Education Bureau of Food and Nutrition and provide all the necessary components needed to make a well-balanced and nutritious diet.

Through the generous support of the United Way and a contract with the State of New Hampshire Development Bureau, we are able to process scholarship assistance for low and moderate income families enabling them to receive quality care at an affordable tuition rate.

First Start has programs for infants, toddlers and preschoolers, as well as an after-school program and a school-age summer camp program. Our center provides a warm, nurturing and safe atmosphere where self-concepts are enhanced, independence encouraged and individuality is respected.

Our fully equipped playgrounds were designed specifically for infant/mini/toddlers and preschoolers and updated in 2017. These “outdoor classrooms” give children the space to develop gross motor skills in a safe environment. Our playgrounds offer a child safety surface designed to minimize impact from falls by providing a “cushion.” The climbing dome, sand boxes with shade cover, slides, crawling tunnels, monkey bars and bike area offer kids many opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors.

The center also enjoys the added benefits of Garrison Park, a City of Concord recreational park, for our school age students. There is also a fenced-in, in-ground pool with certified lifeguards. During the summer, private swimming lessons are included in the tuition for Rainbow Room and Summer Program students through the Concord Parks & Recreation Program.

Concord (eng. Concord

) is a city in the northeastern United States, the capital of New Hampshire and Merrimack County.

History

The province of Massachusetts Bay, which later gained control of New Hampshire, established Penacook Colony . It was settled between 1725 and 1727 by Captain E. Eastman and others from Haverhill, Massachusetts. In February 1733, the colony took shape as a city called Rumfoord from which the title of Benjamin Thompson, Earl of Rumfoord is derived. Rumford was subsequently renamed Concord in 1765 by Governor Benning Wentworth due to a bitter dispute over the boundaries between Rumford and the town of Bow. The new name was intended to reflect the new peace and harmony between the disputing cities [1] . The townspeople who lost the trial were given land elsewhere as compensation.

The city grew throughout the 18th century, and some of its early buildings still remain at the north end of Main Street. In the years following the Revolution, Concord’s central geographic location made it the most likely candidate for state capital, especially after Samuel Blodgett opened the canal and lock system to ships in 1807. This connected Concord to Boston. In 1808, Concord was named the official seat of the state government. In the 19th century, the city became the center of the railway industry. At the moment, Concord is the center of healthcare and several insurance companies.

Geography

According to the US Census Bureau, the total area of ​​the city is 175 km², of which only 8.3 km² is water. Concord’s water supply system is closely connected to the Merrimack River, in whose basin the entire city is located. The river flows through the city from northwest to southeast. The eastern border of Concord is formed by the Soukuk River, a tributary of the Merrimack. The Turkei River flows through the southwestern part of the city. To the west is Lake Penakook. The highest point within Concord is Hill Oak Hill (English Oak Hill ), having a height of 260 meters above sea level.

Concord is adjacent to the cities of Bow in the south, Pembroke in the southeast, Loudon in the northeast, Canterbury, Boscawen and Webster in the north, Hopkinton in the west.

Demographics

According to the 2000 census, the city accommodates 40,687 residents, 16,281 households and 9,622 families. The population density in Concord is 244.4 people. per km². The racial makeup of the city is 95.2% White, 1.03% African American, 0.29% Indian or Eskimo, 1.47% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.34% from other races, and 1.31% from two or more races. 1.45% are Hispanics of all races.

There are 16,281 households in the city, of which 30.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.3% are married couples living together, 11.4% are female with no husband, and 40.9% are single.

The age structure of Concord residents is as follows: 23.1% under 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 33.0% from 25 to 44, 22.0% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% – 65 and older. The average age is 37 years. For every 100 women, there are 98.1 men. For every 100 women aged 18 and over, there are 95.0 men.

The median income for a household is $42,447 in Concord and the median income for a family is $52,418. The median income for men is $35,504 versus $27,348 for women. The per capita income is $21,976. About 6.2% of families and 8.0% of the total population live below the poverty line.

Board

Concord is governed through a mayor-council system of city government. The city council consists of 14 members, 10 of which are elected from districts with 1 elected deputy. The mayor is elected every 2 years.

Attractions

Concord has many attractions and other attractions for tourists. Most likely the largest of them is the building of the New Hampshire State House of Representatives (Eng. New Hampshire State House ), which was designed by architect Stuart Park and built between 1815 and 1818. This is the oldest building of its kind, in the premises of which representatives of the state legislature meet. It was rebuilt in 1866, and in 19In 10, a third floor and a west wing were added.

Directly opposite the House of Representatives is the Eagle Hotel (eng. Eagle Hotel ). Presidents W. Grant, R. Hayes, and B. Harrison have stayed here. Other notable guests include Charles Lindbergh, Jefferson Davis, Eleanor Roosevelt, Richard Nixon and Thomas Dewey. The hotel closed its doors in 1961.

South of here on Main Street is Phoenix Hall (Eng. Phenix Hall), erected on the site of a burned down in 1893 year old Phoenix Hall building. Here are the premises used for a variety of purposes – from political speeches to theatrical performances. In 1860, Abraham Lincoln spoke in the old building, and in 1912, Theodore Roosevelt delivered a speech in the new Phoenix Hall.

Other important city landmarks are Walker-Woodman House , Pierce Manse, New Hampshire Historical Society and others.

Why Have A Dad’s Baby Shower?

A dad’s baby shower (or Dadchelor Party, if you will) is essentially the same event you would throw for a woman having a baby. It is a celebration of the new child about to arrive involving friends and family, food and drinks, and gifts!

While these events have traditionally been held for women (often with dads not even attending due to a ‘no men’ rule!), there has been a rise in the phenomenon of dad baby showers in the last few years. Jakc and Jill baby showers have also grown in popularity. This is a baby shower enjoyed and shared by both parents, and both parents’ friends and families. And why not? It shouldn’t be up to moms to receive all the gifts, celebrate and make all the nursery choices! Men should be equally involved in the parenting process. Dads-to-be are about to become a parent too, and that should be a cause for celebration.

Think of a baby shower as a way of supporting a friend who is about to enter parenthood, of celebrating the change (pun intended) they are about to undergo. It could be a good opportunity for experienced parents to offer advice and help, too! The new dad will love being surrounded by friends and family at this special time.

Last but not least, a baby shower is a great opportunity to relax and celebrate with friends before the new daddy is spending a lot more time changing diapers!

Themes

While a theme is not compulsory for a baby shower, here are some ideas of the roads you could explore to organize the most fun Dadchelor Party!

Sports themed. Make your event an Olympic Games-style competition featuring competitive games and medals.

Baby themed. An obvious one here, but this theme could involve the guests dressing up, drinking out of bottles, and plenty of baby-themed games. You could even enforce that adults wear diapers, for example, either on top of their clothes or on their heads!

B themed. B is for baby, BBQ, beers, and bowling! You could encourage guests to dress up as something beginning with the letter B, too.

Your party does not have to have a theme. Some people choose a weekend away with a group of close friends such as skiing or a city break. Otherwise, you could turn the Dadchelor Party into a usual group activity (golfing, book club, etc), but make it festive and bring a gift!

Party Games

There are plenty of fun baby shower games for daddy to play, as well as lots of baby shower games for mommy and daddy to enjoy together. Below are just a few ideas of baby shower activities you could organize to entertain the guests at your party. If you are having an Olympic Games-style event as described above, don’t forget to prepare medals, a podium, or a trophy!

To begin with, a classic: baby gambling. Give each of your guests one dollar that they can gamble on what they think will be the baby’s weight, birth date, or gender for example. After the birth, give the winner the pot!

Baby bottle chug. Fill baby bottles with the beverage of your choice (alcoholic or not!) and have a competition to see who can drink it the fastest.

Don’t say “baby”. This game consists of outlawing certain obvious words such as “baby” and giving dares out to anyone who uses them.

Baby speed games. This will favor the experienced parents in the crowd, test everyone to see who can prepare a bottle or change a diaper the fastest.

Changing diapers in the dark. Ask each guest to change a doll’s diaper as fast as possible in a dark room to replicate changing a baby in the middle of the night, then laugh when you observe the results! For guests who are not parents, it could be useful to show a tutorial on how to change a diaper first.

Stroller obstacle course. Line up a backyard with chairs, balls, and other obstacles and get two participants to race strollers with dolls in them.

Etymology[edit]

The term shower is often assumed to mean that the expectant mother is “showered” with gifts. A related custom, called a bridal shower, may have derived its name from the custom in the 19th century for the presents to be put inside a parasol, which when opened would “shower” the bride-to-be with gifts. [1] alternatively the term possibly denotes a “first showing” of the new baby to the wider family and circle of friends, although the baby shower is usually held before the birth of the baby.

Traditionally, baby showers are given only for the family’s first child, and only women are invited, [2] though this has changed in recent years, now allowing showers being split up for different audiences: workplace, mixed-sex, etc. [3] Activities at baby showers include gift-giving and playing themed games.

Baby shower games vary, sometimes including standard games such as bingo, and sometimes being pregnancy-themed, such as “guess the mother’s measurements” or “guess the baby”. These games help the close friends attend the shower bond with the mother and enable the new family to say thanks ahead of time, figuring out who is willing and able to help them with the challenges of bringing up.

According to etiquette authority Miss Manners, because the party centers on gift-giving, [4] the baby shower is typically arranged and hosted by a close friend rather than a member of the family, since it is considered improper for to beg for gifts on behalf of their members. [5] However, this custom varies by culture or region and in some it is expected and customary for a close female family member to host the baby shower, often the baby’s maternal grandmother. [6]

When a baby shower is held after a baby’s birth, an invitation to attend the shower may be combined with a baby announcement. In the US, if a baby shower does not happen before the arrival of the baby, a sip-and-see party or other similar events can be organized after the birth.

The term “baby shower” is relatively new, but the celebrations and rituals associated with pregnancy and childbirth are both ancient and enduring. [8]

Ancient Egypt
In ancient Egypt, rituals relating to the birth of a child took place after the event itself. Quite unlike modern baby showers, this involved the mother and the child being separated to “contain and eliminate the pollution of birth” – this may have included visiting local temples or shrines. After this, there may also have been household rituals that took place, but the specifics have been found hard to study as these are such female-centered events. [8]
Ancient India
In India, a pregnancy ritual has been followed since the vedic ages: an event called seemantha, [ citation needed ] held in the 7th or 8th month. The mother-to-be is showered with dry fruits, sweets and other gifts that help the baby’s growth. A musical event to please the baby’s ears is the highlight of the ritual, as it was common knowledge that the baby’s ears would start functioning within the womb. The ritual prays for a healthy baby and mother, as well as a happy delivery and motherhood.
Ancient Greece
The ancient Greeks also celebrated pregnancy after the birth, with a shout ( oloyge ) after the labor has ended, to indicate that “peace had arrived”. Five to seven days later, there is a ceremony called Amphidromia , to indicate that the baby had integrated into the household. In wealthy families, the public decate ceremony, after ten days, indicated the mother’s return to society. (The ten-day period is still observed in modern-day Iran.) [8]
Medieval Europe
Due to the likelihood a mother would die in childbirth, this time was recognized as having a great risk of spiritual danger in addition to the risk of physical danger. Priests would often visit women during labor so they could confess their sins. After the birth, usually on the same day, a baptism ceremony would take place for the baby. In this ceremony, the godparents would give gifts to the child, including a pair of silver spoons. [8]
Renaissance Europe
Pregnancies at this time were celebrated with many different kinds of birth gifts: functional items, like wooden trays and bowls, as well as paintings, sculptures, and food. Childbirth was seen as almost mystical, and mothers-to-be were often surrounded with references to the Annunciation by way of encouragement and celebration. [8]
Victorian Britain and North America
Superstitions sometimes led to speculation that a woman might be pregnant, such as two teaspoons being accidentally placed together on a saucer. Gifts were usually hand-made, but the grandmother would give silver, such as a spoon, mug, or porringer. [8] In Britain, the manners of the upper-class (and, later, middle-class) required pregnancy to be treated with discretion: the declining of social invitations was often the only hint given. After the birth, a monthly nurse would be engaged, whose duties included regulating visitors. When the nanny took over, the mother began to resume normal domestic life, and the resumption of the weekly ‘at home’ afternoon tea an opportunity for female friends to visit. The Christening – usually held when the child was between 8-12 weeks old – was an important social event for the family, godparents and friends.
Modern North America
The modern baby shower in America started in the late 1940s and the 1950s, as post-war women were expecting the Baby Boom generation. As in earlier eras, when young women married and were provided with trousseau, the shower served the function of providing the mother and her home with useful material goods. [8]

  • In Brazil, a party called “chá de bebê” (baby tea) is offered before birth.
  • In Bulgaria, as a superstition, no baby gifts are given to the family before the baby’s birth. However, family and friends give or send unsolicited gifts to the newborn baby, even if some babies are kept from the public for the first 40 days to prevent early infections.
  • In Chinese tradition a baby shower, manyue (满月), is held one month after the baby is born.
  • In Hmong culture, a baby shower is called “Puv Hli”, and is held one month after the baby is born. A ceremony would be hosted by the paternal grandparents or the father to welcome the baby to the family by tying the baby’s wrist with white yarn and/or strings.
  • In Armenia, a baby shower is called “qarasunq” (քառասունք) and is celebrated 40 days after the birth. It is a mixed party for all relatives and friends. Guests usually bring gifts for the baby or parents.
  • In Iran, a baby shower (Persian:حمام زایمان) is also called a “sismooni party” (Persian:جشن سیسمونی). It is celebrated 1–3 months before the baby’s birth. Family and close friends give gifts intended for the baby such as a cot, toys, and baby clothes.
  • In Costa Rica, a baby shower party is called té de canastilla (“basket tea”), and multiple events are held for a single pregnancy for the family, co-workers, and friends.
  • In Mongolia, a baby shower is called “huuhdyn ugaalga”.
  • In Hindu tradition, they are called by different names depending on the family’s community.
    • In northern India it is known as godbharaai (filled lap) , in the Punjab region, it is also known as ” reet “. in Odisha it is called saadhroshi . In West Bengal, in many places a party named “sadh” (সাধ) or “sadhbhokkhon” (সাধভক্ষণ) is observed on the seventh month of pregnancy. It is popularly considered that pregnant women crave fruits and eatables during the pregnancy period; and the was ceremony designed in the olden days to fulfill the desire or food cravings of the mother-to-be.
    • Although these might be celebrated together, they are very different: seemantham is a religious ceremony, while valaikappu and poochoottal are purely social events much like Western baby showers. In a valaikappu or poochoottal , music is played and the expectant mother is decked in traditional attire with many flowers and garlands made of jasmine or mogra. A swing is decorated with flowers of her choice, which she uses to sit and swing. At times, symbolic cut-outs of moons and stars are put up. The elderly ladies from the household and community shower blessings on the expectant mother and gifts are given to her.
    • In Gujarat, it is known as seemant or kholo bharyo , a religious ritual for most Gujarati Hindus during the 5th or 7th month of pregnancy, usually only for the first child.     • In Jain tradition, the baby shower ceremony is often called as “Shreemant”. During the ceremony one of the practice is that the younger brother-in-law of the expectant mother dips his hands in Kumkuma water and slaps the expectant mother seven times on her cheeks and then the expectant mother slaps her younger brother-in-law seven times on his cheeks.
    • In Kerala it is known as pulikudi or vayattu pongala’ , and is practiced predominantly in the Nair community, though its popularity has spread to other Hindu sects over the years. On an auspicious day, after being massaged with homemade ayurvedic oil the woman has a customary bath with the help of the elderly women in the family. After this, the family deity is worshipped, invoking all the paradevatas (family deities) and a concoction of herbal medicines prepared traditionally, is given to the woman. She is dressed in new clothes and jewelery used for such occasions. A big difference in the western concept of baby shower and Hindu tradition is that the Hindu ceremony is a religious ceremony to pray for the baby’s well-being. In most conservative families, gifts are bought for the mother-to-be but not the baby. The baby is showered with gifts only after birth.
  • In the Islamic tradition of Aqiqah, an animal (such as a sheep) is slaughtered anytime after the birth, and the meat is distributed among relatives and the poor. The practice is considered sunnah and is not done universally. [9] [10]
  • In South Africa, a baby shower is called a stork party (named after the folk myth that a white stork delivers babies), and typically takes place during the mother’s 6th month. Stork parties, usually not attended by men and often organized as a surprise for the mother, involve silliness such as dressing up, and mothers receive gifts of baby supplies.
  • In Nepal a baby shower is known as “dahi chiura khuwaune”. The mother-to-be is given gifts from her elders and a meal is cooked for her according to her preferences. The pregnant mother is often invited by her relatives to eat meals with them. Pasni is a traditional celebration that often marks a baby boy’s 6th month or a baby girl’s fifth month, marking the transition to a diet higher in carbohydrates and allowing guests to bestow blessings, and money and other gifts.
  • In Guatemala, only women attend this event. Middle-class women usually celebrate more than one baby shower (one with close friends, co-workers, family, etc.).
  • In Russia, and Commonwealth of Independent States, there are no baby showers, though some of the younger generation are starting to adopt the custom.
  • In Egypt a baby shower is known as ” Sebouh ” (سبوع) (sebouh means week) which is usually celebrated one week after birth hence its name. This is usually celebrated with a DJ, much decoration, a food and candy buffet, activities and games.
  • In Puerto Rico, a baby shower is celebrated anytime after other family members are made aware of the pregnancy, but typically during the last trimester. The grandmother, sisters, or friends of the pregnant mother organize the celebration and invite other relatives and friends. It is not common for men to attend baby showers. The “bendicion” (blessing) is bestowed money and other gifts.

Baby showers for fathers[edit]

Some baby showers are directed at fathers. These may be more oriented towards drinking beer, watching sports, fishing, or playing video games. There has been some controversy over these, with Judith Martin calling them a “monstrous imposition”, [14] although she was referring to the attitude of demanding gifts and not necessarily the male version of a baby shower.

In Hungary, such an event is called Milking party held by tradition in favor of the mother to be blessed with breast milk for the newborn.     In our Infant 3 Classroom your child is usually walking independently and is becoming a toddler. At this age they need more space and opportunities for movement and exploration. This room provides just that! You will find lots of fun and exciting toys/materials to further develop both fine and gross motor skills. Children will enjoy story time, songs/finger plays, art time and sensory play. Sign language is also one of the tools used in this classroom, as most of the children cannot communicate verbally yet. The ratio in this classroom is still 1 teacher for every 4 children.

    Our toddlers are also split into two groups. Children in the Toddler 1 Classroom are approximately 18 months to 2 ½ years old. This classroom follows a ratio of 1 teacher for every 6 children. In this room, they will start learning concepts such as their colors, shapes, letters and counting. In our Omaha early childhood program for toddlers, each day is full of engaging songs, stories, art and playtime that is planned with your child’s developmental needs in mind. Activities and interactions between teachers and children promote expanding their vocabulary. Children begin to learn skills such as sharing and taking turns.     The Toddler 2 Classroom is for children approximately 2 ½ years to 3 years old, again following the 1:6 teacher/child ratio. They have lots of fun with art projects, using various mediums and participating in very hands-on activities. During playtime, this class starts splitting up into small groups in centers. The children learn the boundaries of the classroom and begin to take more responsibility for the area in which they have chosen to play. 

    The age at which a child transitions from Toddler 1 to Toddler 2 is approximate and is based upon the child’s development and readiness. The same goes for transitioning from Toddler 2 into Preschool, with the goal being that your child will end up spending one year in Preschool and one year in Pre-K.

    The Preschool Classroom is for children approximately ages 3 years to 4 ½ years old. It offers a more structured learning environment where your child will learn through large and small group times, hands-on activities, experiments, games, art projects, reading and play.     The Pre-K Classroom is for children approximately ages 4 ½ years to 5 ½ years old, who will be entering Kindergarten the next fall. Our goal is to have them ready as they head off to school, armed with all the knowledge and tools they need to succeed in Kindergarten. The ratio of this group is 1 teacher for every 12 children. Our curriculum is written by a retired elementary school teacher. Not only do we work on academics, we work on independent skills and social skills. Independence and socialization is a huge part of a child’s success just as well as academics. We also use weekly themes for the whole center to incorporate a wide range of learning topics for children.

    Preschool Vision: 2 to 5 Years of Age

    Every experience a preschooler has is an opportunity for growth and development. They use their vision to guide other learning experiences. From ages 2 to 5, a child will be fine-tuning the visual abilities gained during infancy and developing new ones.

    Stacking building blocks, rolling a ball back and forth, coloring, drawing, cutting, or assembling lock together toys all help improve important visual skills. They are developing the visually-guided eye-hand-body coordination, fine motor skills and visual perceptual abilities necessary to learn to read and write.

    Steps taken at this age to help ensure vision is developing normally can provide a child with a good “head start” for school. Preschoolers are eager to draw and look at pictures. Also, reading to young children is important to help them develop strong visualization skills as they “picture” the story in their minds.

    This is also the time when parents need to be alert for the presence of vision problems like crossed eyes or lazy eye. These conditions often develop at this age. Crossed eyes or strabismus involves one or both eyes turning inward or outward. Amblyopia, commonly known as lazy eye, is a lack of clear vision in one eye, which can’t be fully corrected with eyeglasses. Lazy eye often develops as a result of crossed eyes but may occur without noticeable signs.

    In addition, parents should watch their child for an indication of any delays in development, which may signal the presence of a vision problem. Difficulty with recognition of colors, shapes, letters, and numbers can occur if there is a vision problem. The preschool years are a time for developing the visual abilities that a child will need in school and throughout his or her life.

    Understanding the difference between a vision screening and an eye examination

    It is important to know that a vision screening by a child’s pediatrician or at his or her preschool is not the same as a comprehensive eye and vision examination by a doctor of optometry. Vision screenings are a limited process and can’t be used to diagnose an eye or vision problem, but rather may indicate a potential need for further evaluation. They may miss as many as 60% of children with vision problems. Even if a vision screening does not identify a possible vision problem, a child may still have one.

    Passing a vision screening can give parents a false sense of security. Many preschool vision screenings only assess one or two areas of vision. They may not evaluate how well the child can focus his or her eyes or how well the eyes work together. Generally, color vision, which is important to the use of color-coded learning materials, is not tested.

    Between the ages of 3 and 5, your child should have a thorough, in-person optometric eye examination to make sure his or her vision is developing properly and there is no evidence of eye disease. If needed, your doctor of optometry can prescribe treatment, including eyeglasses and/or vision therapy, to correct a vision development problem.

    With today’s diagnostic equipment and tests, a child does not have to know the alphabet or how to read to have his or her eyes examined.

    Here are several tips to make your child’s eye examination a positive experience:

    1. Make an appointment early in the day and allow about one hour.
    2. Talk about the examination in advance and encourage your child’s questions.
    3. Explain the examination in terms your child can understand, comparing the E chart to a puzzle and the instruments to tiny flashlights and a kaleidoscope.

    Unless your doctor of optometry advises otherwise, your child’s next eye examination should be when he or she starts school, around 5 years of age.     Signs of eye and vision problems

    At classes at the Center for Motherhood and Childhood, in an accessible way, a child learns the basics of mathematics, learns the beauty and patterns of the Russian language, makes the first geographical discoveries, discovers the wonderful world of animals and travels through time.

    ABVGDeika program

    At this age, the main goal of classes is to form a readiness for learning at school. In this, it should be noted, the Center for Motherhood and Childhood has been particularly successful. All our graduates become successful students and easily cope with the school curriculum.

    The program includes directions:

    • Development of speech and preparation for teaching literacy;
    • Cognitive development;
    • Development of elementary mathematical concepts.

    As a result of attending classes, our graduates acquire knowledge appropriate to their age, they have formed the ability to accurately and clearly express their thoughts, and cultivated perseverance, which is so required in school lessons. Children are instilled with diligence, diligence and accuracy. In the process of classes, the children learn to work in a team, they form a culture of communication with the teacher and with their peers.

    In groups of children aged 5-7 years, general development and English classes are held. In groups of up to 12 children. Classes are held 2 times a week for 1.5 hours (in groups of 6-7 years – 2 hours).

    Classes are of a substantive nature: once a week – preparation for teaching literacy and speech development (this also includes tasks for the development of all mental processes and creative activities), the second time a week is given to the formation of elementary mathematical representations (with the inclusion of exercises for the development mental cognitive processes and creative activities).

    To prevent fatigue, overload of children, to maintain a positive emotional state in the classroom, frequent changes in activities are used.

    Much attention in the classroom is given to the formation of a child’s motivational readiness for schooling. Talks are held with the children about the school, they play role-playing games, problem situations are discussed, exercises for the formation and development of educational motivation.

    At the end of the training period, a solemn graduation to the school is held with the award of a diploma of graduation from the School of Early Development.

    6-7 years

    The Center for Motherhood and Childhood has developed a one-year school preparation program for children aged 6-7.

    Future First Grader Program

    During one year of an accelerated course, children receive all the knowledge necessary for a first grader, training their skills and abilities. Just like the ABVGDeika program, the course includes preparation for literacy and speech development, the formation of elementary mathematical representations, meaningful counting skills, the development of logical thinking, mental operations of analysis, synthesis, classification, generalization, identification of patterns, comparison, establishment of causal -investigative connections, flexibility of thinking.

    WHO WE ARE

    Created in 2016, the Great Schools, Thriving Communities Coalition, created in 2016, is the first and only ongoing education coalition that encompasses practitioner, advocacy, and social justice organizations.  GSTC pursues inclusively created policies that promote an adequate, equitable and sustainable school finance system that meets the needs of every Colorado student.

    WHAT WE’VE ACCOMPLISHED

    • In 2021-2022, developed Initiative 63 to increase funding for teachers and students support professsionals without increasing tax rates.
    • Actively supported Proposition CC in 2019, the Fair Tax Colorado initiative and Amendment B (property tax reform) in 2020, and developed Initiative 63 to increase funding for teachers without increasing tax rates in 2021-22.
    • Developed Amendment 73, a 2018 citizens initiative to add $1. 6 billion to Colorado’s school finance system, to be distributed in a way that would better meet the individual needs of students. GSTC partners gathered more than 100,000 volunteer signatures to qualify Amendment 73 for the ballot, where the measure came closer to success than any previous statewide school funding tax increase, despite the campaign being outspent 3:1 in the fall. 
    • Meets monthly to discuss and advance ballot and legislative issues; co-create communication and outreach strategies; and learn together about ways to make the Coalition and our own organizations more inclusive and responsive to the needs of individuals and populations that have been underserved traditionally.

    GreatSchools, Colorado Succeeds Announce Expanded School Rating System for Colorado Parents



    DENVER, CO – Dec. 5, 2017 — GreatSchools — the leading nonprofit provider of trusted school information, and Colorado Succeeds, a coalition of business leaders focused on improving education —announce today new ratings for all Colorado schools on GreatSchools.org. Parents and families statewide now have access to expanded information about important aspects of schools — including student progress and equity — that can help them support their children’s education and take action to improve their local schools.

    Utilizing data from sources including the Colorado Department of Education and the U. S. Department of Education’s Civil Rights Data Collection, the new GreatSchools rating system incorporates rich information into its one through 10 Summary Rating and school profiles to ensure school ratings reflect factors that are connected to students’ success in college, career, and life. For more information on the new GreatSchools ratings, visit GreatSchools.org.

    The new GreatSchools Summary Ratings in Colorado include the following (where sufficient data are available):

    • An Academic Progress Rating that shows how much a school helps students improve academically throughout the school year;
    • An Equity Rating that indicates whether a school effectively serves all groups of students, including students in different ethnic groups and students from low-income families;
    • A College Readiness Rating that indicates how well students are prepared for college based on key measures, like graduation rates, college entrance tests, and AP coursework when available;
    • A Test Score Rating that reflects annual results from Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS) for a school compared with scores statewide.

    “We believe schools must serve the needs of every child, in every community, and we know that parents play an enormous role in ensuring this happens,” said Matthew Nelson, president of GreatSchools. “We hope our new rating system and school profiles will further enable parents to be strong advocates for their children — and all children in their communities — to help all kids have a shot at success. We look forward to partnering with Colorado Succeeds and others to advance this work in Colorado.”

    GreatSchools’ new school profiles were designed with an explicit focus on the types of information parents need and the support that can help them take action with this information. For example, if a parent sees that their child’s school has a low Equity Rating compared to other schools in their state, they will find tips on how they can engage teachers and administrators to discuss improving the education of all students at this school. In addition, GreatSchools will continue to offer stories, videos, tips, grade-by-grade newsletters, and interactive tools for parents on ways to support their children’s academic and social-emotional development from preschool through high school.

    Choosing a school in America on the example of Colorado

    “Schools are sold in America, not houses” – I heard this phrase about five years ago from friends who ate a dog while looking for a home and placing a child in a school. And indeed it is. Two approximately the same houses in two approximately the same areas can differ in price just because the first house is attached to a good school, and the second to a school with a low reputation. The level of schools is an important criterion when choosing a home, and it is taken into account not only by families with school-age children, but also by families without children at all. Homes located near high-ranking schools always sell faster and for more.

    Every major city in America is divided into school districts. In Denver, the Cherry Creek School District is considered especially prestigious, and although it includes both good and not so good schools, it is still in high demand, as it is generally considered one of the best. The apartment complexes for rent related to this area, in their advertising, always proudly beat their heels in the chest, and are snapped up like hot cakes by those for whom the school issue is acute.

    A few years ago, our family moved into a wonderful residential complex – large, green, with a lake, a playground, swimming pools, courts, security at the entrance and a million other joys. But at the time of the move, Vintik was still in kindergarten age, and my husband and I, who were not particularly versed in school districts, only knew that head to head with our future home was the best school in Denver – Challenge School. That is, the child could be sent to school by throwing over a common fence. In such a situation, who would want to look at the map of school districts (see above) and find out if, according to this map, this side of the fence is connected to that one?

    But, as it turned out later, the dividing line ran exactly along the ill-fated fence, and if on the other side was the Cherry Creek school district, then on this side it was already Denver Public Schools, to which we were assigned. The current Vintik school in the ranking of Colorado schools is in 298th place out of 876 available, but at the same time it is included in the Denver Top 40 Public Elementary Schools. That is, quite an ordinary school with indicators somewhat better than average.

    This is a very good site. I recommend it for study to anyone who is busy looking for a school. The rating is formed primarily on the basis of the results of tests in mathematics, reading, writing, science, etc., which are taken by schoolchildren once a year. Tests are taken separately in third grade at Elementary School, sixth grade at Middle School, and ninth grade at High School, and scores are compared to average scores a) for the school district; b) throughout the state as a whole. Test scores at the Challenge School are the highest in Colorado year after year, which is why it takes the honorable first place in the ranking of elementary and secondary schools.

    They say that a “school shooter” in Ivanteevka near Moscow wrote on social networks about the mass shooting at the Columbine school in Colorado. Interested in experience, so to speak. It didn’t bother anyone.

    Now, however, there will be occasion to look at Columbine’s experience in other ways, in terms of improving safety in our schools. Moreover, unlike America, we do not have free possession of firearms.

    The April 1999 shooting at Columbine School by two students (13 people killed, 37 injured) stirred up the whole of America, prompting the authorities to take massive measures to improve school safety. This was done at the local, state level.

    The federal authorities only made recommendations.

    By the way, school self-government institutions played an important role in this regard, both at the level of school districts (where they are elected) and at the level of school parent committees: parents know the situation in their school better and more accurately assess the potential danger and the necessary countermeasures, than officials from the sometimes distant center.

    American schools did not begin to install metal detector frames everywhere. Less than 2% of primary schools (with random testing), approximately 8% of secondary schools and 9% of the so-called high school (“high school”, an analogue of our senior classes above the 9th). We are talking about statistics in “public”, in our opinion, public schools. In private schools, the contingent is generally calmer. American public figures and teachers believe that the presence of metal detectors in schools has a negative impact on the environment in the educational institution. Not a prison though.

    On the other hand, a police officer is much more common now in US schools. And this is not an elderly retired security guard, lounging at the entrance and having no clear responsibilities. Police officers are present in 15% of American elementary schools on a full-time basis, in 37% of middle schools and almost half of “high schools”. Unlike in the past, entry to almost all American schools is now limited – only for “their own”. Various monitoring systems have been introduced, cameras are in 75% of public schools. More than half of the schools introduced photo passes. In every tenth school, “badges” with a photo must be worn constantly in a conspicuous place. A quarter of schools are regularly searched for weapons and drugs.

    — What the hell is this place? Tori whispered, speaking more to herself than to Gabe.

    The sun baked the back of her head, sand got into her shoes, but minor inconveniences ceased to bother her when they literally stumbled upon a striking picture. They went around the southern end of the island, and were surprised to find that a rocky ridge stretched all the way to the coast, and as it approached it became noticeably steeper and at the end hung over the water, becoming a mountain seventy or eighty feet high. The waves beat against the heap of stones and the rugged surface of the rocks, or rather, it seemed to them at first. nine0003

    Tori and Gabe walked on and started climbing until the ground gave way to rough black stone. First they heard a sound. Tori froze for a moment, but then she began to carefully climb further, and after a few steps they realized where the echo of the muffled whisper of water and the rustle of waves hitting the rocks came from.

    They stopped and looked down at a huge crack in the rock, as if some ancient deity had cut it in two. Enormous fragments fell into the water near the shore, like pieces of ice that had broken off from an iceberg, but the crack was so deep and wide that the result was a cove hidden from view. Because of the black shadows in those places where the rays of the sun did not reach, it seemed as if the cave went into the very heart of the rock and stretched further under the mountain range. nine0003

    The tide began to ebb, but the waves climbed into the depths of the hidden grotto, and wet black stones glistened in the shallow water. The surf dragged white pieces of coral along with it. Suddenly, Tori noticed something flicker under the surface of the water in a crevasse shrouded in shadows. She squinted, trying to figure out what was there.

    “Let’s go,” Gabe said and, taking her hand, turned her around.

    He went from the coast to the interior of the island, to the top of the mountain. Tori took one last look back and saw something white in the surf among the jagged black rocks that had fallen off the rock years, decades, or even centuries ago. White spots among the heap of dark debris seemed to her somehow strange. nine0003

    – Do you think this is because of the hurricane? she asked as they began to climb up.

    “Probably only happened in the old days,” Gabe replied.

    They made it to the top and walked another fifty yards, instinctively trying to stay away from the edge. The black stone on the “roof” of the grotto was at least twenty feet thick, but Tory still feared it would fail and they would fall into the rock-strewn cove below.

    “I don’t think it’s just the hurricane,” she said as they started down the other western slope, carefully picking their way through the rubble. nine0003

    Tori ran the versions through her mind, swapping them around like pieces of a puzzle.

    – Boggs said there are caves in the rocks. Considering how deep the grotto is, maybe there was already a cave there? And big. First, erosion corroded the stone, then a fierce hurricane swept in, and the wall between the ocean and the inner space collapsed.

    Gabe slipped and nearly fell, braced his hand against a rock to steady himself, then pulled it away and frowned. nine0003

    “Maybe,” he didn’t argue.

    But Tori decided for herself that the grotto appeared in this way, and her own conclusions seemed quite reasonable to her. However, it doesn’t matter. They’ll be out of here soon, and there’s no way she’s coming back. However, black, most likely of volcanic origin, stones endowed the cave with some kind of eerie beauty, and Tori regretted that she did not have a camera with her.

    Below, towards the entrance to the grotto, something like a path of crumbled stones stretched, and, seized by curiosity, Tori began to jump from one flat stone to another. One day as a child, her parents sent her to Maine with her friend Ellen and her family. There, along the shore, such stones were also scattered. nine0003

    — What are you doing? Gabe snapped.

    Tori turned around, surprised by his harsh tone.

    — I want to see the cave up close.

    – Do you think we are here for a walk? Nothing to waste time.

    Tori realized that he was angry, but the next moment Gabe looked past her at the grotto and turned away. Tori knew that expression very well; she had seen it on the faces of men all her life.

    Gabe shrugged.

    – Okay, go, but quickly.

    No longer able to control her curiosity, Tori again began to jump from stone to stone, but with each new step she became more and more uncomfortable. To her right, the waves hit the scattered debris, and a salty mist hung in the air. In the place where she began her path, the path went down at a slight angle, but then the jagged stones turned into a steep slope.

    Fifteen feet ahead, sea water rushed into the grotto and was carried back. The stones she now walked on were slippery with moisture, and Tori tried to step as carefully as possible. When she saw a fairly decent gap in the rocky path ahead of her, she considered turning back, but instead jumped forward and landed with both feet on the angled rock, her arm outstretched to keep her balance.     As Tori began to straighten up, she noticed an unusual pattern on the black fragment and stopped to look at it. Keeping her balance, she placed her foot between two boulders so she could see the drawings better. On the stone, which lay at an angle, scrolls and symbols were carved along both edges. Tori thought they might well be the letters of some outlandish alphabet. Some of them resembled ancient Greek, others seemed completely unfamiliar to her.

    Suddenly, everything inside her contracted, she felt sick, and goosebumps ran all over her body. Tori tried to swallow and suddenly realized she couldn’t. An icy cold gripped the back of her head, she shuddered, lost her footing, and, falling, waved her arms. One foot fell into the water between the stones, and Tori hit her knees painfully on the sharp edge. nine0003

    Tori didn’t notice she screamed, but she probably did, because a second later Gabe called her name and she heard him rushing over to her.

    “In full,” she replied.

    But did she tell the truth? The nausea she felt began to subside, but the chill remained, and her skin tingled, and it wasn’t hot or cold. Tori recognized the feeling. And how could she not recognize him? After all, she had spent most of her life in fear and knew him too well. nine0003

    She pulled her foot out of the water, cursing herself for her awkwardness, and sat down on one of the stones and began to look at the symbols. Who drew them here and why? Maybe people once lived on the island? Or are these stones from an ancient temple?

    Gabe walked along the rocky path much more dexterously than she expected. A little older than her, the captain remained a strong man in excellent physical condition.

    “You should take a look at this,” said Tori.

    She tied her hair in a ponytail, but a few unruly wet strands fell into her eyes. She tucked them behind her ears and leaned over to examine the symbols. nine0003
