Children’s nutrition in spring | News and events

/
News & Events /

A little more and spring will come – a wonderful time that portends warming, the awakening of nature and the arrival of sunny days. It is very important for parents of children to prepare. It is difficult to find a child who would not suffer from spring beriberi. Reduced immunity causes frequent colds and viral diseases. There are symptoms of weakening of the body – fatigue, irritability, lethargy, apathy.
How to improve the condition of the child? To do this, you need to remember 2 rules: observe a diet and second, nutrition should be balanced, varied and contain the necessary vitamins and minerals.
The diet is a rational diet, that is, the setting of certain intervals between meals, as well as its quantitative and qualitative distribution throughout the day.
Greens is an excellent supplier of vitamin B, which improves blood composition, increases hemoglobin levels and strengthens the child’s immune system. In early spring, the children’s menu should include foods rich in vitamins C (ascorbic acid), A, D. Salads, stews, casseroles are easily and with great benefit absorbed by the child’s body. Useful vegetables: young and sauerkraut, carrots, beets, new potatoes, green peas, cauliflower, zucchini, broccoli, cucumbers, fresh herbs.
Fruit is the building material for full development. Pectins, fruit acids, fiber significantly heal the body and improve the functioning of the digestive tract. Apples, oranges and bananas are especially useful. Oranges contain a large amount of vitamin C, minerals. Bananas contain proteins and fiber.

Apple has a miraculous layer due to the content of pectins, calcium, iodine, iron, magnesium, vitamins A, C, B, R. Apples are rich in iron, which effectively prevents anemia. Plums and prunes are very useful for children, because these fruits and dried fruits contain potassium, phosphorus, vitamins A, C, B, pectins, organic acids.
Vegetables contain vitamins, mineral salts and fiber, which improve the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract, improve the child’s vision. Carrots are a source of vitamin A, cabbage is a group of B vitamins, pumpkin is vitamins A, C, E, PP and vitamin B group, cucumbers – this vegetable is rich in calcium, potassium, iron, phosphorus, iodine, and many other trace elements, as well as in small quantities, it contains the most important vitamins: A, groups B, C and PP.

How to Teach Sight Words

Tips for Teaching Sight Words in Pre-K and Kindergarten

Sight Words

What are sight words?

Sight words are words that are immediately recognizable and do not need to be decoded. Some examples of sight words are come, does, or who that don’t follow the rules of spelling. These words need to be memorized because decoding them is difficult.

When teaching reading to youngsters, it helps for them to have these sight words memorized because these are common words they will come across frequently.

Sight Word Facts:

  • Sight words are the most frequently used words in the English language. These are considered high frequency words.
  • Sight words make up about 50% of any written text.

One of the most important things to remember when teaching sight words is to make it both fun and memorable; HeidiSongs Sing and Spell the Sight Words DVDs offer a unique way to do just that. Heidi has a song for every sight word and each song is so catchy your kids will beg to sing them again and again. What makes Heidisongs unique is the multi-sensory aspect. Each song features movements that the students make with their bodies as they sing the songs. This method works well because it incorporates the different learning styles. When children are seeing, hearing, saying, and moving they are more likely to remember.

I have had such great success using HeidiSongs with my classes I can hardly believe it. The parents could hardly believe it either, their children were learning the sight words so quickly and were singing the songs non-stop day and night. Many parents asked for the lyrics to the songs so they could help their children practice the words at home.

Heidi Songs was such a big hit I decided to incorporate the songs into our homework routine to spice it up. Using flashcards, the students sing the corresponding HeidiSongs each night to their parents. I also incorporated Heidisongs into my Rainbow Words program (see pictures and explanation below).

Rainbow Sight Words

Rainbow Words is a unique combination of a sight word motivational tool, an organizational system, and a tracking system all rolled into one. It is difficult to remember which words each student knows. I use assessment checklists but it is time consuming to go around the room and look at the list, then figure out what each student needs to be doing. Rainbow Words is a fantastic solution to this problem.

Basically, it’s a large rainbow you place on your wall, each color of the rainbow is assigned certain words that stick on the rainbow with Velcro. Their words follow a certain sequence that our district does not so I just re-arranged the words on the rainbow to suit my needs. You don’t even have to use their words, you can make your own and stick them on the rainbow. I color coded all of my sight word cards to match the words on the rainbow.

Now during word work time each student has their own ring of color coded sight word cards (see picture below) and I know that they are working on the words that they should be. It’s also easy enough for the kids to follow too, they always know which color they are working on.

Rainbow Sight Word Cards

I purchased the matching colored baskets at Really Good Stuff

The motivational aspect of Rainbow Words is another great feature. The students start out at the bottom of the rainbow on purple with words like “I”. They are highly motivated to move up the rainbow to the next level and so on. Each time they reach their goal and learn all the words of one color they get a certificate of achievement in that matching color. There is also a cloud and raindrop bulletin board motivational system you can create.

How to learn 100 English words a day / Sudo Null IT News

Vocabulary decides a lot. If you know the words, you understand what it is about, even without knowing the intricacies of grammar. If you don’t know a word, you communicate like Ellochka the cannibal. Today we are talking about how to remember a lot and for a long time.

The usual memorization of words has a low efficiency. For example, for 11 years of the school curriculum, students memorize an average of 1-1. 5 thousand words. To speak like a native speaker, you need to know at least 8 thousand words, the Upper-Intermediate level assumes knowledge of 6 thousand words. To understand CNN news, which are created taking into account the interest of a foreign audience, you need to know at least 3 thousand words.

Using traditional methods, it is easy to learn up to 10 words in one session, but only a few can memorize 30 or 50 new words in one day.

Everyone who learns a foreign language faces the following problems:

— words are quickly forgotten if they are not repeated;
– it is very difficult to learn many words at a time;
people just don’t know how to learn words effectively;
– when a word gets into short-term memory, a person stops working with it.

Why is that?

The German psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus was engaged in research on “pure” memory – memorization that is not affected by thought processes. For this, the scientist proposed a method for memorizing meaningless syllables consisting of two consonants and a vowel between them, which do not cause any semantic associations.

In the course of experiments, it was found that after the first error-free repetition of a series of such syllables, forgetting occurs very quickly. Already during the first hour, up to 60% of all the information received is forgotten, 10 hours after memorization, 35% of what has been learned remains in memory. Further, the process of forgetting goes much more slowly and after six days about 20% of the total number of originally learned syllables remains in memory, the same amount remains in memory after a month.

After a series of experiments in 1885, Ebbinghaus derived the Forgetting Curve (also called the Ebbinghaus Curve). On its basis, the following conclusion was made: for effective memorization, it is necessary to repeat the memorized material.

To remember information for a long time, after studying it, you need to repeat it at least five times:

  1. 20-30 minutes after the first study;
  2. after a couple of hours;
  3. next day;
  4. after 1-2 weeks;
  5. 2-3 months after the fourth repetition.

With the help of traditional methods (and repetition is one of them), it will not be easy to achieve a great effect. Effective methods are little known, so it is very difficult to learn many words at once.

Other traditional methods

– Learn with a dictionary, in order
Boring and inefficient. Words start the same but have different meanings, making them hard to remember. Also, you don’t know in what context the word is being used.

If you want to use a dictionary, it is more convenient to make a list of words on a specific topic, for example, select the category “Clothes” or “Travel”. A community of related words is easier to remember.

– Learn from sticker cards
On one side of the card we write the word in Russian, on the other – in English. You need to spend time making cards, but you can carry them with you and repeat words when you have a free minute. If you do not want to mess with paper, you can download a special application to your smartphone.

– Learn words in context
For example, when watching series or movies. For beginners, it’s better to start with TV shows, you can watch them with subtitles. Do not memorize an unfamiliar word separately. Write down or copy the whole sentence from the subtitles at once. So you remember in what situations it can be used.

Method of associations or “Mnemotechnics”

The method of mnemonics is gaining popularity.
The basic principle of this technique is the memorization of information by building visual links between a word and its meaning.

Facts about mnemonics:

— Scientists have found that visual connections are best created in the human brain.
– The method appeared 2.5 thousand years ago. It was used by the ancient Greeks, including the famous thinker Socrates.
— Mnemonics gives quick results. Any person, if desired, can reach a memorization speed of 100 words per hour or more.

Why mnemonics?

“The visual lobes that are most involved when using this technique are the most powerful in the human brain, as they contain the most neurons.
– Any word in a person’s head has a meaning in the form of a specific picture. By building associations, neural connections arise, they can be compared to a wire connecting a word to a picture, for example, when we hear the word “dog”, we imagine a dog.
— Associations are the shortest way to access any information. For example, you hear a familiar song and remember the situation in which you heard it before.
– This technique in practice showed really excellent results – after a few trainings, you can remember 100-300 words per approach.

Algorithm

Step 1
Present a bright, concrete picture. Let’s say you want to learn the word fist (fist), you need to vividly imagine a clenched fist.

Step 2
Find an association by similar sounding with a Russian word. Fist in English fist. You can, for example, imagine a pistachio clenched in a fist. Ridiculous and funny associations are best remembered: the brighter, the better. It is also worth creating your own associations, as they will be more vividly deposited in memory.

Step 3
Match the association with the picture. The picture depicting the word and the picture-association should be visually connected. For example, remembering the word crown (crown), you can imagine a crane lifting a crown. If the crane and the crown in your imagination are just next to each other, there will be no effect, it is better to imagine that the crane lifts the crown by the edge or on a rope. It is better to imagine a huge crown, since large objects are better remembered. You can also add a certain sound or music playing in the background, which would be associated with the crown.

Step 4
Repeat the memorized word aloud 4-5 times in English, slightly raising your eyes up, as if looking at the bridge of your nose. Scientists have found that with this position of the eyes, the largest number of neurons are activated. Keep your eyes open, if you remember with your eyes closed, then you will remember with your eyes closed.

Step 5
Repeat the words – at least in an hour or two, in a day and in a month. Qualitatively created associations are stored in memory for a month. If you do everything according to the algorithm with repetition, you will remember the words for years.

Typical errors

Trying to learn everything at once
Many begin to study intensively, wanting to learn English in a week or a month and quickly quit. It is much more effective to allocate a little time, for example, half an hour, but every day. So the brain will have time to process the information and there will not be too much break for the word to be forgotten. At the same time, the memory will be in good shape, and there will be no overloads.

Immediately learn difficult words that do not correspond to the level of knowledge of the language
If the word is even difficult to pronounce, do not learn it. Beginners need to learn the most commonly used words, which are about 400 words. More than half of them are verbs. Start easy and build up the difficulty.

Do not repeat what you have learned
Without repetition, new words are forgotten.

Learn without understanding the context
You will not be able to use new words if you do not know in what situations they are used.

Learn wrong pronunciation
You must first listen to the correct pronunciation, even if you know the rules of reading well. The site wooordhunt.ru is good for listening.

Tips for those who want to learn words effectively

The more practice, the better.
Experience has shown that after 300 learned words errors disappear, associations appear in the imagination very quickly and the end of the word is remembered well, even if the association is consonant only with its beginning.
It is important to learn quickly, without delay.
For example, choose a thematic list for yourself, set a timer and read all the words in one minute.
Increase the load gradually .
Move from simple to more complex words.
Choose the simplest ones that are easiest to learn. Then set aside five minutes to learn them, and five minutes to rest. Then learn more difficult words from this list.
Organize words into groups according to topics and parts of speech.
First it is better to learn nouns, then adjectives, then verbs.

And most importantly

  • Share your progress with friends to keep you motivated.
  • Reward your progress to get used to the fact that learning is good.
  • Develop memory in general, not only in English.
  • Practice the learned words in conversation clubs to finally fix the words in context.

By the way, we just have an excellent free section “Dictionary” on the site. In it, we tried to take into account all the components of successful memorization of words. You can choose from ready-made sets of words, as well as create your own. In addition, many more useful things await you: from videos and a blog to conversation clubs and lessons with a teacher via Skype.

I would recommend anybody relocating from another state, Westchase is the area to raise your family at.”

Last but not least, we have Keystone. The schools, kid friendliness, and diversity all get As. About 25,377 people call this suburb home. What’s it like there? One resident says, “Keystone is an amazing place to live! It is very centrally located just outside Tampa, all the main attractions and shops in the Tampa area are at most 30 min away. Even though when in Keystone it feels like a rural, agricultural area, there are many grocery stores, shopping plazas and restaurants to pick from only 5-10 minutes away.” They also mention, “Overall it is a great place to live for someone wanting the country life experience while not sacrificing any modern amenities of the city.

Former NASA engineer Marc Robert showed how he used a balloon to lift two chicken eggs to a height of about 30 km and dropped them to the ground so that they did not break . It took about three years of work.

Robert used his experience of successfully landing spacecraft. At NASA, he worked for seven years on the Curiosity rover project.

Initially, the engineer planned to attach the egg to a rocket that would be lifted into the air by a weather balloon. The rocket was supposed to fly towards the ground and release the egg at a height of about 100 meters so that it fell onto a specially prepared mat. Robert calculated that the final speed of the egg would be about 120 km / h, and when falling on a soft surface, it should remain intact.

Enthusiast made three tests at low altitude, but they all ended in failure. Robert then recruited NASA engineer Adam Steltzner, who worked on the Galileo, Cassini, Mars Pathfinder, and Mars Exploration Rover projects. He advised the blogger to move to the desert to avoid possible problems with the law, and along the way to change the design of the aircraft.

The rocket has been redesigned and strengthened so that it can accelerate at twice the speed of sound and then slow down. For the egg, they developed a thermal protection system so that it does not freeze at high altitude, as well as mechanical protection, reminiscent of the landing system of the Spirit and Opportunity rovers.

The engineers have come up with a contingency plan. They placed the second egg in a beach ball filled with soft material.

The third NASA engineer, Allen Chen, who also worked on Curiosity, took part in the launch. The balloon stopped climbing when it reached the 30 km mark. The failure occurred due to the cord that held the rocket and the beach ball. The entire system, when falling, doubled its design speed, accelerating to about 240 km / h. However, in the end, both eggs remained intact.

What skills do you need to become an aerospace engineer?

First of all you need to be actually is good at math. Aerospace engineering is all about making sure everything in your project works perfectly, so you need a lot of practice with numbers and equations.

The same goes for physics; if you want to become an aerospace engineer, you must know how things work on earth and in space.

You can use physics on Earth to design airplanes or rockets, but it will also help if your designs are used in outer space or on other planets where gravity may not work the way it does here on Earth.

You should also learn about chemistry because it is another important part of aircraft or spacecraft design. For something like a car or airplane engine to work properly, all of its parts need fuel, and fuel comes from chemicals.

Computer programming is another skill that will help make sure any new technology works before it is put into production lines around the world.

To sum it up, you need to have above average skills in the following areas to become competent as an aerospace engineer:

  • Some seriously good math skills
  • Analytical skills
  • Ability to solve problems
  • Critical Thinking Skill
  • Business Skills
  • Writing skills (for explaining design and processes)

How long does it take to become an aerospace engineer?

Four to five years.

In the United States, aerospace engineering schools last for 4 years, and in some other countries for up to five years. Although, if you are planning to study an advanced aerospace engineering program (such as a master’s degree), it will take significantly longer.

To become an aerospace engineer, you need at least a bachelor’s degree and sometimes a master’s or Ph.D. a PhD can take two years or more and requires extensive coursework as well as independent research projects completed under the close supervision of consultants.

What are the educational requirements for studying aerospace engineering?

The educational requirements for studying aerospace engineering are quite extensive. To earn a bachelor’s degree in this subject, you must first complete a bachelor of science or a bachelor of engineering degree in mechanical engineering.

After completing your first degree, you can apply to any aerospace engineering school of your choice. But this is only one way to do it.

Most schools have an aerospace engineering program that you can apply to directly from high school. These schools will require you to have a math or science-related background when applying.

In addition, you will need a minimum GPA of 3.5 or higher in order to be able to compete with top students equally competing for admission to the schools you are applying to.

Salary and benefits of becoming an aerospace engineer

So what are the benefits of becoming an aerospace engineer? First, you will have a great salary. The average annual salary for an aerospace engineer is $122,720 per year. This is almost twice as much as the US average.

You can also get free medical and retirement benefits when you work for most companies.

But there’s one more thing: if you want to increase your salary by taking on more responsibilities or specializing in a particular area of aerospace engineering, that’s also possible.

Verdict: Is aerospace engineering difficult?

So, aerospace engineering is complicated? Well, it depends on what you think of the word “tough”. If you’re talking about something that requires long hours of sleep deprivation and lots of caffeine, then yes, it’s possible. It can also be useful if you love math and science, but it may not be for everyone.

Here’s the bottom line: If you love all things aircraft and space technology and aspire to design aircraft for NASA and other leading organizations, then this career might be right for you.

You will find that the work you have put into finding the best school will give you peace of mind because you know you have done everything you can to give your child the very best. nine0003

‘Can’t compete’: Why hiring childcare workers

The Biden administration is trying to solve the problem of private childcare that has worsened during the pandemic.

Y.M.C.A. in San Antonio, 200 children are on a waiting list for childcare services due to hiring problems. He raised the average hourly wage for full-time workers to $12.50 from $10, but still can’t recruit enough teachers to keep up with the demand. nine0003

In Ann Arbor, Michigan, a school district has announced the closure of its afterschool program. He managed to hire people to work in five of the 20 primary schools most in need of help, but this left at least 1,000 children behind.

In Portland, Oregon, preschool space is scarce and elementary schools are operating with limited capacity or have canceled programs altogether.

Schools have largely reopened this fall, but life as a parent of young children is far from normal. One reason for this is that child care facilities – for children too young for school, as well as the hours before and after school – are operating at 88% of their pre-pandemic capacity. Even before the pandemic, children’s institutions did not reach everyone who needed them. nine0003

The shortage is partly due to the pandemic. Some centers ceased operations after closing at the start of the pandemic. Since children under 12 are not yet eligible for vaccination, many programs enroll fewer children to limit the potential risk of infection. But the biggest reason for the shortage of staff, according to childcare providers across the country, is that they can’t find people to hire.

Eight out of 10 agencies said they were experiencing staffing issues, and half said it was harder to hire than before the pandemic, according to a survey conducted over the summer by the National Early Childhood Association of 7,500 workers. Half said they were serving fewer children because of hiring problems, and a quarter said they cut hours. The lack of child care facilities also contributes to the shortage of other labor forces, as many parents who cannot find reliable childcare are unable to return to work. nine0003

“The only things we haven’t done yet are sandwich boards and standing on the corner with a spinning sign, but I’m not giving it up just yet,” says Claire Miller, Director of Children and Youth Services in Decatur, State Guyana, which has given a $2 raise, is asking parents to refer them to specialists and offering college students credit for internships.

The city offers 600 places for children, up from 800. Ms. Miller said it was “a terrible feeling, of course, because we promised parents that they would be provided. ” nine0003

Child care providers face the same problems as workers in many other service industries who cannot find enough workers – low wages and low job security. According to the Center for the Study of Childcare Employment at the University of California, Berkeley, the median hourly pay is $12, and 98 percent of occupations pay more. Early childhood education has a high turnover of staff, and childcare work for school-age children lasts only a few hours a day and often ends in the summer. nine0003

Caring for children presents additional challenges. Some people are hesitant to work with unvaccinated children. This job requires higher qualifications, including background checks, certifications, and even higher education in some areas, than jobs in shops and restaurants, which pay more.

However, child care centers have not responded in the same way that some other industries have, with massive pay increases and benefits. This is due to a mathematical problem in the business model. nine0003

In the US, care for children under 5 years of age and pre-school and post-school care is primarily funded by private fees. However, more than 60 percent of families are already paying more than they can afford, according to a report released Wednesday by the Treasury Department. (The Department of Health and Welfare considers childcare affordable if it costs families no more than 7 percent of their income.)

In addition, the cost of childcare doubled during the pandemic due to new health regulations, including additional staff to keep small groups of children stable. States limit the number of children per teacher, so institutions cannot recruit more children without hiring more workers. nine0003

“The free market works well in many different sectors, but childcare is not one of them,” Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said Wednesday, speaking of the Biden administration’s proposals for spending on education and childcare.

“Children are poorly paid, and many who need it cannot afford it,” she said. Biden’s plan calls for free preschool from age three, subsidizing childcare up to that age, and raising the minimum wage for childcare workers to $15 an hour. nine0003

In a national survey of 7,500 service providers, 78% said low wages were their top recruiting problem. Heather Mossefin, owner of Heather’s Family Home Child Care in Clyde, Ohio, raised wages to $9 an hour, then to $9.25, 45 cents above the minimum wage.

“I can’t compete with job bonuses and $20 an hour at an amusement park,” says Ms. Mossefin, who provides care for children from infancy to age 12. “Here, even fast food establishments are hiring for $12-$15 an hour. I can’t raise prices for my parents because we’re all suffering.” nine0003

Last week she lost a worker at a car factory. She has reduced the number of children she cares for by a third, to 12, and says she works far more than a full-time job herself.

She received $18,000 home after paying bills and staff salaries last year. This year—with declining attendance, an additional $4,500 spent on cleaning supplies, and $1,000 she spent trying to hire Indeed—she expects to earn $14,000. A full-time toddler’s tuition is $756 per month. and recently she raised it by about $4 a week. But she knows her customers, who mostly work at the local Whirlpool factory or fast food restaurants, can’t pay more than that amount. nine0003

“I understand, I was a single mother,” she says. “It’s just what my city needs.”

The pandemic threatened to disrupt an already fragile child care system. The centers that managed to reopen after the closure initially struggled with low attendance – many parents found it inconvenient to send their children back. Workers did not always receive masks and other protective equipment, medical care, or hazard pay.

“You have a situation where workers are already struggling and now they’re under enormous pressure to work not only with a lack of resources, but with no care and respect for the welfare of child care workers,” says Lia Jay E. Austin, Executive Director of the Center for the Study of Child Care Employment at the University of California, Berkeley. nine0003

Now that parents want to return to childcare, they can’t find it, leaving some without a full-time job for the third year in a row.”

When Ann Arbor schools canceled extracurricular activities during the summer, Alicia R. Ventresca Miller , an assistant professor of anthropology at Michigan, panicked. She had already put off her professorship application for a year when the schools first closed, and expected to have time to write a book this year. Her partner, a teacher, scheduled classes for the afternoon.

“I understand that I’m in a privileged position and I have a schedule that could be forgiven, but I need it,” she said.

She has found some short-term after-school activities for their 6-year-old son, but most often she or her partner picks him up at 3:15 pm. After that, the working day ends – it needs to be bathed, fed and looked after.

Day care workers say that when it comes to working with children, recruitment standards cannot be lowered.

24/7 Child Care Becoming a Thing in Kansas City

    Published September 3rd, 2021 at 11:00 AM

A local couple with a heart for serving Kansas City’s east side is fulfilling their promise to provide more high quality and accessible child care.

Penny Dale-McCant opened The Kiddie Depot in 2005. Seven years later, Dale-McCant and her husband Myron McCant turned her home-based child care business into a 3,000-square-foot, 24-hour child care center with a lengthy waiting list.

This year, the couple is taking things a step further with their new multimillion dollar KD Academy child care facility. Though the building is state-of-the-art, their purpose remains the same as when Dale-McCant opened The Kiddie Depot over 15 years ago with just a handful of kids.

“Our responsibility here, along with our staff’s responsibility, is to do whatever it takes,” McCant said. “Those families, they’ve got to go to work. Those babies need a good place to come to. They need love, they need education and they need nutrition.”

What sets KD Academy apart from other child care facilities is the fact that it’s open 24 hours a day. Once the McCants saw the overwhelming need for child care in underserved communities where many parents worked nights, they knew that they had to find a way to extend their hours.

KD Academy also is doing more than simply occupying the kids while their parents are at work. Part of their mission is to use literacy and interactive STEM programs to catch up kids who might be lagging behind in school.

This aquarium in the entryway of KD Academy will serve as a STEM project for the kids. KD Academy’s “little scholars”, as the McCants say, will use math and science to maintain the tank. (Catherine Hoffman | Flatland)

One of the most difficult parts of running KD Academy, Myron McCant said, was having to turn away opportunities. That is how he refers to the children and families on their waiting list. When the new facility opens, the couple looks forward to being a home away from home for more kids than ever before.

Catherine Hoffman covers community affairs and culture for Kansas City PBS in cooperation with Report for America. Cody Boston is a video producer for Kansas City PBS.

Education – Welcome To Yuma, Arizona

Yuma is home to many different school districts for primary and secondary education. Yuma and South County provide five school districts for elementary and high school students. Other educational alternatives include public charter schools and a variety of private and parochial schools, or parents may home school their children in accordance with state law. For more information, contact the Yuma County School Superintendent at 928-373-1006.
