Summer in the Sun at Crystal Pool and Manawa

Historical and Preservation Society of Pottawattamie County

County Seat Council Bluffs, Iowa

. 2 Swimming at Manawa

and

Crystal Pool

Spending some time in the water has long been a good way to occupy a Midwestern summer afternoon.  Over the years Council Bluffs has had a number of beaches and pools at which to carry out that plan.

Lake Manawa has had swimming at several locations around the lake since the opening of Manhattan Beach in 1886.  In 1938 a public beach was built on the north shore near the peninsula that was fairly popular, but not universally accepted. As local doctor Arthur Pedersen put it, “that beach is not clean and it is necessary to take a bath after swimming there in order to remove the filth picked up in the water.”  Swimming was relocated to the south shore in the 1990s.

Lake Manawa State Park offered swimming at a beach on the north shore from 1938 until the 1990s.

In 1895, ice dealers A.G. & E.J. Gilbert were allowed to establish an eight-acre pond for ice cutting on the south side of Lakeview Park. Referred to as “Gilbert’s Lake” or “Gilbert’s Pond,” water was piped from nearby springs. In 1920, the Park Board erected a bathhouse along its north bank. Sand was brought in to create a beach and to provide better footing over the lake’s mud bottom. A fence was constructed around the pond and an admission fee charged. The usual dark heavy woolen bathing suits of the day could be rented in the bathhouse.  The lake was closed to swimming 1935 due to the impurity of the water.

The Y.M.C.A. brought the option of indoor swimming to Council Bluffs in the early part of the 20th Century, but the pool was small and open to males only until 1930; photo from 1925.

Gilbert’s Lake offered swimming at Big Lake Park in the early part of the 20th Century.  The lake remains today but with no swimming.

The Y.M.C.A. on First Avenue opened in 1909 but swimming opportunities were limited; the indoor pool was small and restricted to males only until 1930.

For at least a couple of generations the summertime hot spot was Crystal Pool on Fifth Avenue at South 29th Street.  Crystal Pool was built and opened by local carpenter/general contractor John Langstrom in the summer of 1931, its 13,500 square foot structure holding “a half million gallons of water.”  Christening of the city’s first pool was a big event, with a celebration organized by Creighton University’s swim team that attracted “some of the best swimmers in the country” for a diving and water sports demonstration.

Lack of a municipal pool meant Crystal was home to activities that likely would have gone to the city pool had such a facility existed.  The Red Cross held their swim classes there; the pool was also the host to regular swim competitions under the direction of Matt Walsh, “the most stellar basketball player ever to graduate from Abraham Lincoln High School.”  Mr. Walsh was also the chief life guard at the pool in the mid-1930s and an expert swimmer, known for his ability to swim the length of the pool completely under water.

By the late 1950s pressure mounted to create a city-owned pool.   Some considered Crystal inadequate for a community the size of Council Bluffs; by 1960 over 2000 kids a summer were taking the Red Cross’ water safety program, forcing them to use the private pool of Floyd Hughes, Jr. on Kenmore Avenue as well as Crystal.  Others felt the fee of a private pool— fifty cents— was beyond the price many local youths could afford on a regular basis; public pools in other cities were charging kids just fifteen cents.

Elks Country Club installed a pool in 1956 but it was for the use of their members only.

A sufficient number of citizens signed a petition to put a public pool on the ballot but voters rejected it.  Realtor Harry Crowl suggested the city purchase Crystal Pool instead, but the petition organizers said the point was to create an additional pool, not subsidize an existing one.

On the north end of town some people took matters in their own hands.  The Cabana Swimming Club was formed in 1960 with 200 families buying a membership for $150 and agreeing to dues of $25 per year.   The 40 x 60’ main pool and 20 x 30’ wading pool for children were built at Raymond Avenue between Gunn and Spencer Streets.  Other membership pools followed; Town and Country in the 1960s and Green Meadows in the 1970s.  Cabana pool has since closed; the city purchased the land in 2013 and developed it for housing lots which were resold to private developers.

In 1964 the Council Bluffs Youth Center was created adjacent to Woodrow Wilson junior high school at North 16th Street and Avenue G.  A pool was built at that facility by developer Darrel Anderson and leased to the city for use as a municipal pool.  That same year John Langstrom died; Crystal Pool was closed and put up for sale.  Crystal Pool sat vacant; in 1969 a petition was circulated to have it demolished as a safety hazard.  A local entrepreneur talked of a plan to recondition the pool and reopen in the early 1970s but the plan was abandoned.  The pool itself has been filled in but buildings that housed Crystal Lodge and the bath house still stand today.

The city added a second public pool in 1976.  It was named for former mayor Joseph Katelman who had donated land adjacent to Sunset Park for the pool.  The city has recently added a water playground to Fairmount Park as well.

A new Y.M.C.A. pool was built on Fourth Street in the mid-1970s.

Crystal Pool “met the need of the city for a high class ballroom” in 1933.  The brick facility was described as innovative with it’s long enclosed veranda equipped as a lounge and smoking room.  The ballroom was built just to the west of the pool facing the “fully equipped picnic grounds;” it hosted dances every Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday night featuring live bands.

Manhattan Beach was located about where today’s public swimming area is at Lake Manawa.

Manhattan Beach – the beach in Los Angeles for the richest residents of California | Manhattan Beach

Hello everyone! When we traveled around California in the fall, we visited Manhattan Beach (Manhattan Beach) – a classic Southern California beach with surfers, beach volleyball and people just sunbathing on it. It originally emerged as a small resort town located on the Pacific coast (South Bay) in Santa Monica Bay, south of El Segundo and north of Hermosa Beach. And today Manhattan Beach is one of the most expensive and safe areas of Los Angeles with a cozy family beach where city residents come to relax with their children, go in for sports on the ocean or have fun with friends. nine0005

Manhattan Beach

9000

004 is a small town with an area of about 10 km

2 and one of the calmest beaches in California, which is located in an expensive and prestigious area in the southwest of the city of Los Angeles. It got its name in 1901 by chance: Stuart Merrill, the owner and developer of the northern part of Manhattan Beach, who, after moving to the West Coast of the United States, wanted to continue living in Manhattan, previously lived in Manhattan in New York. But for this, he had to change the already existing name Shore Acres, invented by another owner of this land. Their dispute was eventually resolved by a coin tossed up. nine0005

Fun Fact: Manhattan Beach was covered in sand dunes prior to development, which were flattened in the 1920s and 1930s. This left a large amount of excess sand, some of which was transported to Hawaii to create the sandy beach of Waikiki on the rocky coast of the island of Honolulu. Sand from Manhattan Beach was also used in the construction of the Coliseum Stadium, which has become a real landmark of Los Angeles, and in the ennoblement of its Pacific coast. nine0005

I will not go into all the details of the history of Manhattan Beach and talk about its infrastructure and the quiet life of the population of this small town on the Pacific coast. You can read about all this on Wikipedia. Let me just say that the number of its inhabitants (as of 2018) is about 36 thousand people, and almost all of them are quite wealthy people, if not rich. So if you decide to buy a house on Manhattan Beach, then prepare at least $ 3 million! nine0005

Map of Manhattan Beach

2 interesting facts about Manhattan Beach:

  • Manhattan Beach is located just 5 kilometers from the Los Angeles International Airport, so it is quite easy to see planes taking off from it.
  • The most expensive housing in Los Angeles is low-rise residential buildings (mostly two- and three-story townhouses and small cottages) that stand densely along Manhattan Beach at an altitude of 20 or more meters above sea level. However, huge mansions, like those that we saw on the hills in Malibu, you will not find here. The first line of housing is along Ocean Drive, while the second and third are along Highland Avenue and Valley Drive. nine0010

For more information about the city of Manhattan Beach, see http://www.citymb.info/

Graffiti is also very popular in Manhattan Beach, as well as on Venice Beach

All houses on the coast are low – two or three floors maximum

From the beach it is good to watch the planes taking off from LAX

The houses on the first line are located on a slope that used to be covered with sand dunes

Beautiful ocean view from Manhattan Beach

Manhattan Beach

Manhattan Beach is located right on the shoreline along Ocean Drive, in front of high-end residential buildings overlooking the ocean, where quite rich and successful people live. It seemed to us interesting in the first place for its cleanliness and sports spirit. In terms of size, this is not the largest city beach in Los Angeles – its length is about 3.4 km, and its width is from 200 to 500 m. It is not so often to meet young dudes here (as on Malibu beach), but a respectable audience on expensive cars, he loves to come to rest on Manhattan Beach. About 4 million people visit the beach every year, which is only slightly less than the tourists on the south rome in the Grand Canyon Park. nine0005

North end of Manhattan Beach

South of Manhattan Beach Pier more crowded

This family beach is always crowded with parents and children

Wooden Lifeguard Tower

South Bay Bicycle Trail and Pacific Coast Promenade run along the entire Manhattan beach and are the best place for walking and light jogging. And if you exit Manhattan Beach near the pier and cross the road, you will find yourself on a street with many restaurants and shops. We came there on foot from our hotel in Los Angeles, where we decided to stay for a few days. nine0005

Manhattan Beach Municipal Car Parking (cost – from 1-3 dollars per hour to $ 10 per day, you can pay card, opening hours from dawn to 10:00 pm) are often crowded, and it will take time to find a place where to park your car. Therefore, it is better to come here on foot, come by bike, skateboard or roller skates. However, you can also take a taxi or take a bus to Highland Avenue, and then go down Manhattan Beach Boulevard to the pier, as we did. nine0005

Here’s what to do at Manhattan Beach:

  • Sunbathe
  • Swim and swim when the waves aren’t too strong
  • Spend time with the kids on the playground
  • Go fishing or watch someone else’s catch
  • Walk along the pier and sit on a bench there with a good view of the ocean
  • Visit the free aquarium and see baby sharks and lobsters
  • Enjoy a beautiful sunset
  • Take memorable photos
  • Relax at the bar

Free toilets are available for Manhattan Beach visitors. There are also changing rooms where you can change your swimsuit and take a shower. We also saw wooden rescue towers, on which lifeguards are on duty from dawn to dusk, closely monitoring the safety of people in the ocean. Several of their vantage points are located on either side of a long pier that juts out into the sea. nine0005

Manhattan Beach is considered to be one of the best coastal areas in Los Angeles, because there are all opportunities for recreation, entertainment and sports. Have you heard of boogie boarding? It turns out that this is one of the most popular activities on Manhattan Beach. Usually experienced surfers catch a big wave south of the pier, and boogie boarders hang out in the northern part of the beach. The two best surf spots are called Pier and El Porto. We also saw fishermen here who were catching some small coastal fish from the pier on spinning rods. nine0005

Los Angeles beach volleyball courts

But still, the main activities on Manhattan Beach are beach volleyball and surfing. There are dozens of volleyball courts on the beach, and everyone can try this simple and popular game. And on Manhattan Beach, the traditional annual Manhattan Beach Open volleyball tournament and the International Surf Festival are held, where everyone present has the opportunity to see world-class athletes. nine0005

Manhattan Beach Pier

The main attraction on Manhattan Beach is a long 283-meter pier, which is joined by the boulevard of the same name, located perpendicular to the coastline. The wharf was originally built in 1901 of wood, and in 1920 it was rebuilt of concrete, and has since been reconstructed several times. At the very end of the pier is a small Mediterranean-style octagonal structure known as Roundhouse Marine Studies Lab & Aquarium . Inside it is a laboratory aquarium built to study the ocean, where you can look at sharks, lobsters and various fish of bright colors. There is also a small cafeteria.

  • The Manhattan Beach Pier Aquarium is open on weekends from 10:00 am to sunset and on weekdays from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
  • Entrance to the aquarium is free for everyone.
  • Group and educational excursions.

For more information about the aquarium, see http://roundhouseaquarium.org/

We were walking around Los Angeles and we got to the Manhattan Beach Pier just before sunset

There is a small building with an aquarium at the end of the pier

And we watched the sunset on the Manhattan Beach Pier

Behind me there are volleyball courts, where even international tournaments

Walking along the pier, we watched the surfers, which are very clearly visible from above. They ride their surfboards right next to the pier as this is where the best waves are. nine0005

These surfers managed to catch a good wave

Despite the excellent sunny weather, there were not very many people on the Manhattan Beach pier. Mostly they were tourists and photographers who came to admire the beautiful sunset, as well as a few fishermen. By the way, fishing is one of the most popular activities among the locals. It is allowed here all year round, but you need a special license to fish.

Manhattan Beach Pier can be seen in movies more than once:

  • Point Break (Point Break) with Keanu Reeves as a surfer special agent, 1991.
  • Killer couple: Starsky and Hutch Drunken Dawn (Tequila Sunrise) – crime thriller with Mel Gibson, 1988. in Philadelphia). nine0005

Many residents life thanks to the established friendly environment, with an excellent environment for personal and career growth. There is no doubt that the most prosperous people in America strive to live in such a favorable atmosphere. Therefore, houses and apartments here are very expensive. nine0005

    • First, it has the best schools in all of Southern California, and the security and public order are so high that the LAPD has little to do here. Even in bars, a healthy lifestyle is promoted, and conflicts do not happen often. Manhattan Beach is also known for its excellent restaurants, including the amazing Le Pain with organic latte and Paradise Bowls with fruit and berry salads and smoothies. There is also a pizzeria, Starbucks cafe and fish restaurants. nine0010
    • And secondly, South Bay is one of the best and most beautiful places to live due to its close proximity to the beach and stunning views of the Pacific Ocean, which, due to the climate of Los Angeles, is a pleasure to spend time at any time of the year. In addition, there are many interesting places near the beach. The only problem in Manhattan Beach is some traffic jams during rush hours, but in general they are not as time-consuming as in Bangkok.

    Conclusions

Manhattan Beach is well suited for those who want to sunbathe in Los Angeles on the beach without too much noise and fuss, ride a bike, play sports or learn to surf. It is an ideal place for relaxation and leisurely walks along the coast, which will appeal to parents with small children and calm couples, as well as those who like to go shopping or sit quietly in a bar. But for cheerful youth, Manhattan Beach is not very suitable, they would be much better off going to Venice Beach or Santa Monica. nine0005

During the week we went for a walk here. I really liked the beach. There are places for making fires and picnics. There are toilets all over the beach through certain places. By the way, they are clean and tidy. nine0324 The beach is well maintained, with pleasant houses in the first line. Rich area (which means it’s clean and tidy).
This is where we saw the pelicans dive

Wonderful town! The southern houses are also beautiful, most with balconies. Spacious beach with clean sand. The entrance to the ocean is smooth in depth, it is convenient with children in calm. On the first coastline there is a bike path with good coverage, however, as elsewhere in the USA. Cafes, eateries, shops, clean streets. In 2014, Stanley Cup winner Los Angeles Galaxy was honored at Manhattan Beach. There were a lot of admirers of this team, incl.

3 Small-Scale Daycares & Preschools in Chelmsford, MA

Your family is unique to you, but some of your questions might not be. 😉 Here’s what most parents want to know when starting out.

    What is NeighborSchools?

Hey there, nice to meet you 👋 We’re a new-ish startup that helps new-ish parents find daycare.

We know how hard finding good child care can be – especially for first-time parents. But really good care is what gives you the peace of mind to go back to work and feel confident that your child is getting the stimulation, socialization, and support they need to learn and grow.

So we created NeighborSchools to make this piece of parenthood a whole lot easier. We say “easier” because, let’s be honest, it’s still a big thing to figure out, but working together we can help you find some good options, understand the whole process, and choose a program you’ll feel really good about.

    How’s it work?

Most first-time parents don’t know exactly what they’re looking for, so we created a simple survey that will ask you questions about your lifestyle, your daily routines, and your preferences for child care. We’ll then share 3 personalized recommendations that we think might be a good fit. We’ll also give you a timeline that maps out when we would suggest you start touring programs, choose a daycare, and pay a deposit to secure a spot. Your timeline is based on when you want to start care – so you set the pace, and you decide when you’ve found the right match.

    Is there a cost?

Nope. Our daycare recommendation service is free for parents. The other half of our business is helping these small-scale daycares with software and services that handle all their administrative tasks, like online contracting, payment processing, and licensing requirements. Before NeighborSchools, services like these were only designed for large corporate child care centers, and part of our mission is to level the playing field for small, independent child care programs. That’s why we picked the name NeighborSchools – we’re all about making child care more personal, more human, and more equitable for the incredible individuals who do this work and care for our children.

How do I know if I’m ready to take the survey?

Generally, if you’re here, you’re ready. The survey lets us give you 3 recommendations to consider, but it’ll also help you better understand what factors to consider, and what questions to be asking right now. It’s simple things like where you live, your child’s date of birth, when you want to start care, and if you have any preferences around program philosophy or language of instruction. If you’re planning 6+ months ahead, it’s a great way to get started, and if you’re hoping to start daycare in the next 2-4 months, it’s definitely time to get started. Click here to start the survey.

How do I know if a daycare has openings?

Each program has a limited number of spots for each age range, so we need to know your schedule and child’s age before we can share availability. The survey covers these basics, as well as factors like drop-off and pick-up times to make sure that recommended programs fit your daily routine. Once we know your child’s age and schedule we can share rates and costs as well.

More questions? Text or email – we’re here to help.

We’re online Monday – Friday from 8am to 6pm Eastern.

    Ms. Ana

    Program director

Hello! My name is Ana, and I am thrilled to be the Program Director of Little Sunshine’s Playhouse and Preschool of Roswell!

My passion for early childhood education began as a young mother homeschooling my own children. It has since grown to over 18 years of combined experience serving as a director and executive director in the early childhood setting. Including nine years of a children’s ministry as director and teacher. Through these experiences, I have made many relationships with wonderful families.

On a personal note, I have been married 28 years to my best friend, Jorge. We have raised three wonderful children Scarlett, Laura, and George, and are very excited to have welcomed our first grandbaby, Atlas. Our family enjoys exploring the great outdoors through hiking, camping, kayaking, and more.

It is with great pride and joy that I walk alongside your family through this educational journey.

    Ms. Erika

    Assistant Director

Hello, my name is Erika, it is my pleasure to serve you and your family as the assistant director of Little Sunshine Playhouse of Roswell. I’ve been at Little Sunshine’s of Roswell since the school first opened in 2020, where I started as a teacher. Throughout my time I have fallen in love with the Little Sunshine Playhouse company and the Reggio Emilia-inspired teaching philosophy we use in our classrooms.

I am working toward my bachelor’s degree in psychology with a focus on early child development. I have experience working with all age groups, and love getting to be a part of such an impressionable age in children’s lifetime!

A little background about myself, I have lived in Georgia my whole life. I remember how much I love it every fall! In my spare time I love shopping, spending time with my family and my pup, Oakli, as well as surfing Pinterest for fun classroom activities.

I look forward to getting to know you and your little ones.

What Our Roswell Families Are Saying

    Tiffany

Our family LOVES Little Sunshine’s Playhouse in Roswell! We transitioned to this school with open arms from the Program Director…I call her “The Mary Poppins of LSP” she’s just amazing!  She recommended our daughters speech teacher come to the school for sessions and it has worked out great. The front staff is always very welcoming and kind! Our daughters teacher has just been an amazing light in our life. We have seen our daughter take great strides since coming here and have so much fun. We can’t wait to get our one-year-old in the school next.

    Allison

I cannot say enough great things about LSP Roswell! Both of our boys (2 and 5) have been there for a while now and they are both making huge strides on all levels! We couldn’t be happier with all of their teachers. We have been to two other preschool programs in the area and this one is hands down the BEST of the BEST! Our boys love them all SO much and so do we! 5 stars, for sure!!

I can’t recommend LSP enough. My daughter has an expressive language delay. We discovered this pre-Covid and had just gotten her into speech therapy when Covid hit. Not only did Little sunshine‘s Playhouse support us in the transition going back to school a year later but I have witnessed my daughter grow in her communication.  The breath of relief Little Sunshine’s teachers have given us is something we will forever be grateful for. I find that this rapid growth of my daughters communication is directly from the design of their education style. It is a perfect blend of planned curriculum and individual play. The monthly themes allow for children to learn new words and lessons at their own pace. Thank you, LSP for all that you have done for our family.

Georgia will decide whether Biden will have a “comfortable majority” in the Senate / In the world / Nezavisimaya Gazeta

Despite polling data, supporters of Republican Herschel Walker believe in his victory. Reuters photo

On Tuesday, the second round of elections to the Senate will be held in the US state of Georgia. For the first time in US history, two black candidates will meet in it: American football legend and Donald Trump nominee Herschel Walker and Democrat Raphael Warnock, who is the favorite of the race. The success of the Republican candidate will no longer ensure his party’s control of the Senate, but will inspire its supporters. And the victory of the Democrats will slightly reduce the faction’s dependence on two senators, who stand somewhat apart from their fellow party members. They will get what the US calls a “comfortable majority” – that is, the relative unity of their faction. In addition, Trump will be hit hard: even more Republicans will doubt whether they need such a leader and presidential candidate. nine0007

Georgia is the only U.S. state that hasn’t counted the results of the November midterm elections. In the first round, Warnock received 49.4% of the vote, missing 50% + 1 vote to win, and Herschel Walker – 48.5%. 2% of voters gave their preference to the representative of the Libertarian Party, Chase Oliver. Due to the minimum gap between the candidates, the second round was scheduled. Many analysts called the vote in Georgia ahead of the midterm elections the key to the battle for the upper house of Congress. But when the elections ended and the votes in all states except this one were counted, it turned out that there was no such intrigue. Even if Republican Walker wins in Georgia, his party members will not gain control of the Senate. There they now have 49seats, while the Democrats, together with two independent candidates who form a coalition with the party, have 50. And according to the Constitution, in the event of a tie in the Senate, the decisive vote remains with the vice president of the country. That is, for Democrat Kamala Harris.

Before the first round, according to the polls, Walker and Warnock walked close to each other, although Warnock had a slight advantage. The picture has not changed much since then. RealClearPolitics and FiveThirtyEight give Warnock a lead of about 3%. The touch was small, but in a certain sense convincing: during the polls after the first round, Walker never came out ahead. It also speaks in Warnock’s favor that moderate apolitical voters who can have their say tend to favor Democrats. It is supported by residents of big cities. In Fulton County, which owns the largest city in the state of Atlanta, 73. 5% of voters voted for Warnock. But the “provincial” constituencies overwhelmingly preferred the Republican candidate.
    nine0003

There is also a noticeable difference in preferences between white and black voters. According to CNN exit polls, in the first round, 90% of blacks voted for Warnock, and 70% of whites voted for Walker. Democrats and Republicans have long been waging a desperate struggle for the African-American electorate. But, as the experience of the first round in Georgia shows, the Republican Party fails to win over a black voter to its side, even when it nominates a black candidate. Interestingly, Walker failed to achieve in his state what many other Trump henchmen did: he did not enlist the votes of Hispanics and Asians. 58–59% of those voters in the first round preferred Warnock.

Walker’s problem was that his reputation was by no means impeccable, as is often the case with talented and unrestrained athletes. His result in the first round was seriously affected by the scandal that broke out before the elections and was inflated not without the help of the pro-democratic press. It became public knowledge that Walker, a principled opponent of abortion, himself financed the abortion of one of his girlfriends. At the time of the publication of this information, the difference in ratings between him and Warnock was only 0.3%. Walker has three illegitimate children and one child from a broken marriage. Yes, and that blogger, who initially supported his father, later burst into a tirade against the parent, calling him a “liar”, for whom family values mean nothing.
    nine0003

The party knew about the stormy personal life of a football player, but still nominated him as a candidate (see “NG” dated 10/05/22). Trump personally insisted on Walker’s candidacy, thus making another mistake. Georgia repeated what has already happened in many states. The immoderate Trumpists smash their moderate party members to smithereens in the primaries, after which the already moderate voter votes for the Democrats in the general election. Walker’s defeat would strengthen those in the Republican Party who believe Trump is incapable of attracting votes. In this case, the position of Ron DeSantis will be strengthened. After being re-elected in the Florida gubernatorial election in November this year, he is already becoming a real competitor to Trump in the struggle for leadership in the party.
    nine0003

Warnock positions himself as the opposite of Walker. Although he lives in a divorce, he is a Baptist pastor who has dedicated his life to serving the church. But Warnock did not prepare strong trump cards that would allow him to win many votes from Walker. But he has won by a marginal margin before. In the 2021 early elections, he was only 2% ahead of Republican Kelly Loeffler in the fight for the senator’s seat from Georgia.

With the election of Warnock in the Democratic Party, the position of the centrist wing, which is supported by Joseph Biden, will strengthen. The conformity of a Baptist minister is badly needed by the White House to secure a solidarity vote for the Democratic faction. West Virginia Senator Joseph Manchin constantly opposes costly bills, even if they are supported by the whole party. In addition, he is a staunch opponent of Biden’s plans to transition to a green economy. Along with Arizona Senator Kirsten Sinema, who is also not always supportive of the White House, Manchin is the main problem for the White House in the Senate. Having secured an extra vote in the Senate, the presidential administration will no longer depend on him as much as before.

    Day Care Centers Site

More and more in today’s world both parents have employment and need suitable day care centers for their children. These early stages in a child’s life are very important to their growth and development. Choosing a good child day care center is vital, one where the adult won’t just plunk your children down in front of a soap opera all day and feed them Top Ramen. You should look for day care centers that provide learning programs and playtime for your child, along with a safe and healthy environment.

There are many different types of day care centers, ranging from basic nurseries to preschools that will provide more of a learning environment for your children. Some day care centers specialize in a specific age range, while others are more open. When you’re contemplating placing your child in a specific day care center, you should visit each one with your child. In this way, you can see how your child reacts to the other children who are there and to the caregiver. You want your child to be happy and comfortable.

While some day care centers provide a greater variety of activities than others, any good day care center is going to encourage positive interaction among all of the children. They will also have rules that promote good behavior, learning, manners, and child development. You certainly don’t want to have to worry that your child is going to develop bad habits from day care.

Providing the child care and day care services:Day Care Center / Nursery, Child Care Provider

While you don’t need to go overboard in choosing suitable day care centers, you should approach the subject seriously and with thought. Your child is going to be spending a good-sized portion of his or her life in day cares and you want to make sure it is going to be a positive experience. Family is the most important thing in the world and you should make sure that your children are your first priority.
When you are considering a day care center, you should look at where it is located and how much it costs. There’s not much sense in putting your son or daughter in daycare so that you can work full time and spending most of what you earn on the day care center’s tuitions and your travel expenses. If that’s the case, you might as well stay home with your child. However, if you do truly need the money, there are usually plenty of day care services available and it shouldn’t be too difficult to find one close by that is reasonably priced.

Different Kinds of Child day Care Centers

While child day care centers are common, there is such a huge demand for this service that there are now quite a variety of options available other than basic day care. These include the following:

    • Home child care or family childcare
    • Child care services
    • Preschool
    • Nursery

Home child care tends to be the most popular option because it is generally more affordable and a smaller environment. While some day care centers are quite large and can provide better early childhood education, it is also more difficult for each child to receive personal attention. Day care centers that are based out of someone’s home are usually more personal and your child can receive more care and nurturing. Most parents want their children to be receiving love and affection, the care that they themselves would give them. They don’t want a day care business that is merely going to make sure that their child is still alive and adequately healthy.

Home child care providers are also more adaptable, generally speaking. This means that if your child likes a certain song sung to them before they take their nap each day, the home care provider is more likely to be willing to do that than someone in a larger day care facility. Most adult home child care providers are parents themselves, making them better able to understand and love your child.

    Other Things to Think About

One of the first steps you should take after picking out a family day care center that you think will be suitable for your child is do a little investigating. This can involve talking to the parents of the other children that use the child day care center to see what they think about it. You should also always check to make sure the child care service you are considering is legally licensed to operate in your state. Licensing officials check criminal records and ensure that the child care provider has emergency response training and a safe and healthy environment for the children.
As mentioned earlier, it is a good idea to visit the child day care center that you are considering. You should do this at least a couple of times, and try to go at different times of the day so that you can get a better idea of what kind of schedule they have. This will help you to see how your own child would fit in.
If you are having difficulties finding the appropriate child care environment for your son or daughter, there are some other options. Some people get family and friends to help out, while others hire a nanny. Adult nannies are a good option because they ensure that your child receives personal attention and quality child care. However, this also means that your child will not receive as much social interaction since he or she won’t have other children to play with like in a family day care center.

No matter what option you decide to go with, make sure that you know who you are leaving your child with.  Meet them, get to know them, and let your child do the same. Do some research on the internet to make sure that no one has had negative experiences with the day care center you are considering. Check to make sure that they are legally licensed. Once you have done all of this, you can feel more confident and secure in knowing that you have chosen the right day care center for your child.

    Switching Day Care Centers

    Choosing Another Child Care Provider

So you want to switch day care providers for your kids but you don’t know where to start or what to choose among the plethora of options out there in this world. It is fittingly one of the most important decisions of a young parent’s journey due to the fact that a child’s first formative years up until the age of six is critical. It is important for parents to not just consider the monetary impact of these choices but also the emotional, intellectual, and social future impacts the choice of a day care provider will have on their kids in the long term future. So let’s discuss some general tips to consider for the parent and the child to consider when one is looking to switch day care providers within a short time frame.

First, you must consider the cost of attending some of the more prestigious and rigorous day care provider centers in your area. In some areas, let’s face the reality that the more money per month per child spent; the better the facilities and the educational value experience offered for your child. Things such as using smart boards and I Pad’s to enhance the learning experience is a very real possibility in these places. However, if a parent is budget conscious they can still afford this experience but it would mean cutting back on all or most non-necessity spending. This would include curbing your eating out habits as well as any leisure entertainment or travel activity and place that money instead into your child’s future day care home. If an expensive day care sees that you are making an effort to keep up with the payments; then they will be more willing to work with you and not let your child leave that place. For a child going to this environment, they need to consider whether or not they will fit into this environment, things like playtime, feeding time, and individual care of the staff- is it received well by the child? These will make the difference between choosing these ones or a cheaper alternative. Cheaper is not all bad if the quality and availability of care is there for your child in the first place.

Secondly, you need to consider your travel times and distance of day care relative to your work and other important places like the hospital, grocery store, bank, and places that you frequent on a daily basis. Is it near enough that you can get to your child should he/she become ill or need special attention so that the day care center can contact you and arrange a meeting with you the same day if needed.

Furthermore, you need to consider the overall cleanliness and friendliness of the day care center provider. Do not underestimate a clean environment for your kid to play and learn in with other kids. Your kid will enjoy making new friends in a clean and safe environment. Plus you as a parent will enjoy the peace of mind of knowing that your child will not be being home any unwanted germs and diseases into your house. Parents must also consider if there is a dispute over payment and care; how does the management and staff deal with such requests? If there is a lackadaisical approach to your core issues; then that is a bad prelude of things to come concerning your child’s care. Your child will probably feel like he/she is being neglected or not fed on time and will start to complain to you ever so slightly that something is not right. When they do, do not hesitate to take them out of that day care center and find another one immediately.

In a recessionary economy, it is okay and permissible for both parents and kids to demand the best care for their dollar. Make your day care dollar stretch by reading all of the material and brochures and visiting every day center on your list until you find that perfect fit for your child. It’s out there; it is just waiting on you to find it!

Child Care Options for Low Income Families

One of the most frustrating aspects of being a working citizen is not having the ability to afford childcare. The majority of day care facilities charge as much as $300 per week for each child. That amount is difficult for middle-class citizens to pay. Low-income families cannot fathom paying such an expense. Luckily, the government and the various states have developed programs that help low-income families get the childcare they deserve. The following is some information on those programs:

    Extended Day Program

The extended day program can assist low-income working parents during the regular school year. Many school districts offer this program. The school keeps children before and after school hours for a small monthly fee. A parent can drop a child off as early as 7:00 a.m. and pick the child up as late as 6:00 p.m. This program is excellent for low-income workers with daytime weekday jobs. The cost is approximately $150 per month for before and after school. The weekly rate is approximately $37.50, which is extremely competitive.

The attendants participate in various activities with the children before and after school. They help the children with their homework so that the parents have less stress when they come home from work. They give the children a full breakfast in the morning program and a snack in the evening program. Parents can opt to pay for the morning program only, the evening program only, or both programs. The evening program is the more expensive of the two because it lasts so many hours after the school releases the children. The evening program is $100 while the morning program is $52.

    The Child Care Assistance Program

CCAP is a special program that provides childcare assistance to certain low-income families. People who are collecting TANF are automatically eligible to receive this assistance. Teenage parents who are working on obtaining their educations are also eligible for CCAP. Those who are not collecting TANF can still qualify if they are pursuing education that will improve their work skills and job opportunities. Parents can apply for CCAP assistance with the Department of Children & Family Services. The financial guidelines for qualification are along the lines of a $3,000 per month income threshold for a four-person family. The applicant must have proof of income, social security cards, birth certificates, and immunization records for all children. Application processing can take up to 30 days.

    Head Start

Head start is a program for children between the ages of three and five. The program provides childcare services and medical services to the children who qualify. It is funded by the Administration of Children’s Services. The Head Start program covers childcare from 7 a. m. to 5 p.m. Teachers work with the children to fine-tune their social and developmental skills. Those who are interested in the program may apply online. Applicants go on a waitlist until there is an available slot in the program. It is best for an interested person to complete an application as quickly as possible since the wait may be extended.

    Child Care Voucher Program

The Child Care Voucher Program is in effect in many states throughout the United States. It provides a subsidy of up to 95 percent of childcare cost to low-income families. Subsidy recipients will choose an eligible provider from the list of licensed providers. They may also select a relative or an in-home provider. The Child Care Voucher Program covers the childcare from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Monday through Friday. This is known as the traditional childcare period. However, the program also covers non-traditional times for parents who work odd shifts. It covers nights, weekends, and evenings.

A wide variety of options is available for low-income childcare. Many stay-at-home moms also run small day care businesses in which they discount their services. There is a way to make working and taking care of your children affordable.

    Tuition Payments

Tuition is due on the 1st of each month. If payment is received after the 1st of the month, Interlake reserves the right to collect a late fee of $10 for the first day and $5 for each day thereafter.

A monthly invoice is made through Brightwheel. Linking your bank account is the best way to make this payment. Linking a debit card incurs a surcharge through Brightwheel. Paying by check is also an option. All checks must be mailed or hand-delivered to the office. Checks should be made payable to: INTERLAKE CHILD CARE CENTER

    Sibling Policy

For families with multiple children enrolled at Interlake, we offer a $100 discount per month, applied to the younger child.

    Late Pick Ups

All children must be picked up by the time the center closes. For all late pick-ups, $5.00 will be charged for any time within the first 5 min, plus an additional $1.00 for every minute thereafter. Fees will be applied through Brightwheel and are based on sign out time through Brightwheel.

    Drop-in Care

Families with part time schedules can avail drop-in care. This must be arranged beforehand by emailing [email protected], and is dependent on space available in the classroom. The drop-in charge must be paid on the same day.

    Refunds

We must pay our regular staff whether or not your child attends the center on any given day.  In general, tuition refunds are NOT provided under any circumstances, including but not limited to: illnesses, absences, vacations, holidays, planned closures, unplanned closures, or emergency closures.

    Waitlist Fee

A $115.00 non-refundable wait list fee is due upon joining the wait list. If a child is enrolled without being on the waitlist, a $115.00 non-refundable registration fee is due upon accepting the space.

    Deposit

When enrolling through LegUp, a deposit of $600 is required to register your child. $100 of this goes to LegUp directly as their administrative fee; the other $500 is eventually refundable, being applied to the final month of tuition . You may also opt to apply your deposit as a tax deductible donation to Interlake.

    Leaving the Program

A 45-day written notice or more must be given in order to receive the refundable portion of the deposit. An email to [email protected] is sufficient. Tuition is not prorated if you choose to leave Interlake prior to the last day of the month.

    Subsidy

The City of Seattle helps working families pay for child care for children ages 1mo to 13 years. Interlake is among the 165 licensed child care centers and homes which contract with the City to provide high-quality and affordable child care. You can learn more about CCAP, the Child Care Assistance Program. Interlake also participates in Early Achievers to accept DCYF subsidies as well.

    Testimonials – Interlake Child Care

    Testimonials

My children have been going to Interlake for the past 3 years, and it feels like a second home to us. We’ve enjoyed the dedicated and passionate teachers and staff, and have found wonderful friends among the kind and caring families at the school. The building may be old and quirky, but it’s a wonderful and loving place for kids. Interlake recently hired a new Interim Executive Director who is leading the school in a great direction. The center has an emergent, play-based curriculum and is NAYEC certified. Interlake offers home-cooked vegetarian meals made by an amazing cook who has been working there for the past 19 years (you can even buy her cookbook and make vegetable-filled meals that your kids will actually eat at home). I highly recommend Interlake!

    Katie

    (children attended 2016-present)

Wonderful school for our toddler and baby! This is our second daycare in Seattle, and our 3rd experience with daycare overall. We’ve also had excellent nannies. This school is AMAZING – photos every day, vegetarian healthy breakfast lunch and snacks served (our LO ate curry!?!? wow), a daily curriculum with new activities and new targets to learn every week, very low turnover rate (do teachers even leave this school?), outside time for all the kids (including soccer and frisbee at the park across the street), and probably best of all — I have never heard a teacher yell at the children. At our last daycare, you couldn’t go a day without someone yelling and the kids, and the kids being completely out of control. At Interlake, the teachers have a policy not to yell (because otherwise the kids will yell too), and the kids are honestly so much better behaved — they treat others with respect, they check in with their friends if something is wrong (it’s adorable!). In the past month, our kids have done pumpkin painting, baked bread, made paper lanterns, and delivered bags to homes to assist with a food drive. These teachers come up with so many creative lessons: they put effort into thoughtful activities to create socially adjusted, well-behaved kids; they instruct kids on when it’s time for fun movement; and they really care about the kids. I’m so happy we found this place.

    (children attended 2019-2020)

Interlake is a gem of a daycare/child development center. I am impressed with the long-term staff and dedicated teachers. My kids have grown and thrived at Interlake. The curriculum is inclusive, engaging and adaptive based on the children’s interests. The made from scratch meals are amazing. I am thankful I don’t have to prepare snacks and meals for my kids to take to school and the food is incredible. The family style dining encourages great eating habits. I think my children are exposed to a greater variety of food and try more foods because all the kids are eating together. The first time I saw all the kids eating together – scooping their own food, pouring their milk and sharing a meal together, I was blown away. I also value the great outdoor space and how much outside time each of the classrooms get. Rain or shine – those kids are running around and burning off energy. My kids get a lot of mileage on their rain boots.

I was a bit surprised that even the infant classrooms have “parent teacher conferences” but these meetings are so valuable. The teachers develop portfolios on each child with artwork and share how your child is engaging in the classroom and curriculum. I really appreciate the developmental assessments and team support of the teachers in working with each child and family. I have learned so much from the teachers on child development and parenting.

I feel like I have developed a valuable community at Interlake with the teachers, staff and other parents. I hope that these connections continue past the tenure of my kids attending. I highly recommend this daycare.

    Laura

    (children attended 2016-present)

We have been blessed to have been part of the Interlake family for over six years. It truly is a community; I love knowing that my children are being cared for, respected, loved and stimulated while I’m at work and can’t be with them. The friendships the kids made are amazing as well – my elementary school aged son still counts his Interlake friends among his best friends!

    Jenny and Jeremy

    (children attended through 2018)

From the teachers, to the kids, to the parents, to the yearly camping trip – we love everything about Interlake. How do we know Luca loves it, too? Because he talks about his friends and teachers all the time. He requests to see them when we leave. He shows compassion, he’s empathetic, he puts away his dishes, and he loves to sing his ABCs. And sure, maybe we taught him some of that… but we know that Interlake had a hand in shaping our little baby into the big kid he is today.

    Barrie and Dominic

    (child attended through 2018)

We fondly remember our kids having fun and getting dirty! They loved bubbles in summer, mud puddles in winter, story time after lunch and watching (greeting) passing trucks (especially fire trucks!). We loved the caring teachers, the whole foods program, and Interlake Norms (Walking feet! Indoor voices! No put-downs!). We especially love the loving, supportive Interlake community.

    Nicole and Frank

    (children attended 1995-2003)

I remember the smell of baking bread. I remember pretzels and chanting “you get what you get and you don’t throw a fit” about the colored cups at meal time. I remember hiding in the cubby in the hallway at the end of the day when I didn’t want to go home. I remember making and burying fossils out in the preschool yard. I remember taking leaves off the kale plant and being surprised every time by its weird taste.
I remember movies on a projector at parent’s night out and being thrilled, but kind of disconcerted by wearing my pajamas at school. I remember Mikey Baby [former director] reading The Hobbit to us at naptime. I remember a field trip to The Indoor Sun Shop when it was over on 45th in the U District. Did we take the bus? I remember the magic of our graduation picnic dinner at the Good Shepherd Center… again, I remember the smell of baking bread, but I especially remember playing with [Mikey’s] daughter’s Barbie dreamhouse.

    Tom and Alison

    (children attended 1987-1991)

As a Kindergarten teacher, I had a pretty good idea of what I was looking for in a school for my own little boy. I feel so lucky to have found Interlake Childcare and Learning Center.
I was looking for a child-centered, play-based environment where my son could blossom and learn the foundation skills that I consider so important during the early childhood years. At Interlake, I found fantastic, dedicated teachers who provide a purposeful, meaningful, and developmentally appropriate multi-age classroom where my child has enjoyed being nurtured by the older children and is now practicing his leadership skills in his pre-K year.
Interlake teachers provide a balance of small group instruction and self-directed play. They enrich the children’s learning by setting up numerous stations and providing interesting materials to capture the excitement of the preschoolers. Teaches bring their own excitement about topics to the classroom, while also following the lead of the children in their emergent curriculum.
I love how the children are encouraged to explore academic skills in developmentally appropriate, playful, individualized, and child-driven ways. More important than any academic skills, however, are the social skills. I am beyond thrilled with what my son has learned so far at Interlake. I see amazing empathy, compassion, self control, problem-solving skills, curiosity, and risk assessment skills in my child. I am so happy to have chosen Interlake.

    Natasha and Ted

    (child attended 2014-2016)

All of the fantastic teachers gave Keenan such a great start in life! We knew he loved Interlake, but one sure sign was when I would come to pick him up, he would spot me, get a big grin, then turn around and run to some activity to show off and also get just a little more play in! I also remember the messy clothes he’d come home in, another sign of the fun he was having every day.

Catholic school in Spring plans to close this month

    • Newsletters

Northwoods Catholic School, a private and independently-run school that serves pre-kindergarten through eighth-grade pupils in Spring, is closing its doors at the end of May after 17 years.

Parents, students and employees were alerted on May 4 of the decision to close the school, which is located off Gosling Road and FM 2920 in Spring.

The school was battling budget deficits and dwindling student enrollment before the decision was made to shutter the school.

“We have to keep in perspective that private catholic schools are always a challenge. It’s a very tough thing economically. In the 75 years that we’ve operated, it’s always been a financial battle,” said Jim Fair, the Legionaries of Christ director of communications and public relations for North America.

Student enrollment this year at the school is 268, but only a projected 160 students were expected to enroll for 2016-17. Private Catholic schools are dependent on the communities they live in to sustain funding.

“It really got to the point that we had a deficit this year, and we were projecting bigger deficits for next year, and there was no way to make that up. We tried with parents and benefactors, neighbors, friends and everyone we could, but there was no way to do it,” Fair said.

At Northwoods, administrators are transitioning parents and students to nearby schools.

“Right now we’re busy trying to take care of our students,” said Kathy Graff, admissions director at Northwoods Catholic School.

The Northwoods community may transfer to nearby schools such as St. Anne Catholic School in Tomball, St. Edwards Catholic School in Spring, St. Anthony of Padua Catholic School in The Woodlands, Sacred Heart Catholic School in Conroe or St. Mary Magdalene Catholic School in Humble. For those graduating to high school, Frassati Catholic High School in Spring which is undergoing expansion, is an option. Other Christian schools include The Woodlands Christian Academy, New Life Community Christian School in Spring, Founders Christian School in Spring and Light House Christian Academy in Spring.

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston sent out a memo to all its affiliated schools notifying them of Northwoods’ closure, confirmed Jonah Dycus director of the secretariat for communications at the archdiocese. Area catholic schools hope to open their arms to help the Northwoods community through enrollment and job opportunities.

Parents are quickly trying to enroll their children in nearby Catholic schools. At St. Edwards Catholic School off Spring Stuebner Road, calls have quickly streamed in.

St. Edwards, a pre-K through eighth-grade parochial school in the Galveston-Houston archdiocese, is set on 15 acres and has an enrollment of 351 students. Current vacancies allows the school to hold another 70 to 80 students before reaching capacity.

“We’ve had a lot of phone calls, and several families came and picked up applications,” said St. Edwards Catholic School Principal Patrick Clark. “It happens, and you do what you can for them.”

Is the Catholic school a true story? Is the Netflix movie based on real life?

Directed by Stefano Mordini, Netflix. The crime film “The Catholic School” revolves around the students of a famous Catholic school in Rome, Italy, who explore their lives and how several of the institution’s students descend into barbaric acts of violence. Original name “La Scuola Cattolica”. the Italian film primarily follows Angelo Izzo and Gianni Guido, whose actions are explored through the point of view of Edoardo Albinati, one of their classmates. Along with a true and realistic portrayal of the school years, the coming-of-age film tries to unravel the reasons for the crimes that Angelo and Gianni commit by teaming up with another boy. Naturally, viewers need to be intrigued to find out if their life and actions have real roots. Let’s give an answer!

Yes, The Catholic School is based on a true story. The film is an adaptation of the semi-autobiographical coming-of-age novel of the same name written by Edoardo Albinati, a real-life counterpart of the character of the same name. The book revolves around the “Circeo massacre” committed by Angelo Izzo, Giovanni “Gianni” Guido, and Andrea Gira. Angelo and Gianni studied with Edoardo during the massacre. In September 1975, Angelo and Gianni met Donatella Colasanti and Rosaria Lopez through a friend of the two boys. Having met for the first time, they planned to meet again.

On September 29, 1975, Angelo and Gianni took Donatella and Rosaria to a villa owned by the Andrea Gira family, located in San Felice Circeo, in the Lazio region of Italy. According to reports, Angelo and Gianni then began to harass the two girls. When they did not comply, Gianni threatened them with a gun and locked them in the bathroom. Angelo and Gianni were later joined by Andrea Ghira, who introduced himself to Donatella and Rosaria as Jacques Berenguer, the leader of the Marsiglesi clan. Three of them then raped and tortured Donatella and Rosary for 35 hours. They also reportedly drugged two girls.

After the barbaric rape of Rosaria, Angelo, Gianni and Andrea reportedly killed her by beating her and drowning her in a bathtub. They also reportedly tried to kill Donatella by strangling her, only for her to play dead. The three friends then covered the dead bodies of Rosaria and Donatella with plastic and placed them in the trunk of a Fiat 127. They then drove to Rome. When the killers moved away from the car, Donatella made sounds, which attracted the attention of the night watchman. Soon, representatives of the Carabinieri arrived at the scene. Soon Gianni and Angelo were arrested. However, Andrea escaped before officials could arrest him.

In July 1976, Angelo, Gianni and Andrea were sentenced to life imprisonment. At the time of his sentencing, Andrea was still on the run. He lived in Spain under an assumed name and died in 1994 from an overdose. Angelo was released in 2005 on parole for good behavior, only to kill two women while on parole. In 2007, he was again sentenced to life imprisonment. Gianni became a free man in 2009year thanks to a reduced sentence. On December 30, 2005, Donatella died of breast cancer at the age of 47.

Although Edoardo Albinati’s source material is based on real events, the author took creative liberties that must have been reflected in the film. “The Catholic school is based on events that really happened, events that I partly witnessed firsthand. Working with these real events, I intertwined episodes and characters with different percentages of fiction: some are concocted from a single piece of fabric, others owe a lot to what really happened, to people who exist or once existed, ”wrote Edoardo. in the original text.

As for Stefano Mordini, the film’s director, The Catholic School is not a film solely about the crimes of Angelo, Gianni and Andrea.
