Pittsburgh nanny seeks travel and childcare
Dear family, I am a young, adventurous, outgoing girl who wants to pursue both of her passions for travel and childcare.
Sticks to the mouth. It can’t be washed away or wiped off easily like milk curds.
Sometimes causes a painful mouth, decreased sucking and reduced milk intake
Mild discomfort or no symptoms in most newborns
The infant is bottle-fed or breast-fed
Cause of Thrush
Caused by a yeast (called Candida)
Occurs on parts of the mouth involved with sucking
Made worse by friction from too much time sucking on a pacifier
White Tongue Alone: Not Thrush
If a white tongue is the only finding, it’s not due to thrush.
A milk diet often causes a white coated tongue.
This is normal.
It will go away after your baby starts eating solid foods.
If white patches occur inside the lips or cheeks, call your child’s doctor. It’s safe to call during office hours.
When to Call for Thrush
Call Doctor or Seek Care Now
Dehydration suspected. No urine in more than 8 hours, dark urine, very dry mouth and no tears.
Age less than 1 month old and looks or acts abnormal in any way
Your child looks or acts very sick
You think your child needs to be seen, and the problem is urgent
Contact Doctor Within 24 Hours
Fever occurs
Bleeding in the mouth
Drinking less than normal
You think your child needs to be seen, but the problem is not urgent
Contact Doctor During Office Hours
Thrush, but none of the symptoms above. Reason: may need a prescription medicine to treat it.

Care Advice for Thrush
What You Should Know About Thrush:
Thrush is common during the early months of life.
It’s caused by a yeast infection in the mouth. Most often, it’s due to prolonged sucking.
Thrush causes only mild discomfort. It’s easy to treat at home.
Here is some care advice that should help until you call your doctor.
Anti-Yeast Medicine (Prescription):
Your doctor will probably prescribe an anti-yeast liquid medicine. Use it as follows:
Age Under 1 Month: Use 1 mL.
Age Over 1 Month: Use 2 mLs.
Place in the front of the mouth on each side. Also, put it wherever you see the thrush. It doesn’t do any good once it’s swallowed.
Do this 4 times per day.
If the thrush isn’t getting better, rub the medicine directly on the thrush. Use a cotton swab to do this.
Don’t feed your baby anything for 30 minutes after the medicine.
Keep this up for at least 7 days. Also, continue it until all thrush has been gone for 3 days.
Decrease Sucking Time to 20 Minutes per Feeding:
Reason: Too much sucking can irritate the lining of the mouth. This makes it more prone to a yeast infection. A common example of this is when a baby sleeps with a bottle.
For severe mouth pain with bottle feeding, don’t use a bottle. Reason: The nipple can make pain worse.
Try giving fluids in a cup, spoon or syringe instead.
Limit Pacifier Use:
Too much sucking on a pacifier can irritate the mouth.
Limit pacifier use to times when nothing else will calm your baby.
If your infant is using an orthodontic pacifier, switch to a smaller, regular one. Reason: Bigger ones can cause more friction in the mouth.
Special washing or boiling of pacifiers or bottle nipples is not needed or helpful.
Special Washing of Pacifiers and Nipples – Not Helpful:
Pacifiers and bottle nipples can be washed the usual way with soap and water.
They do not need to be boiled or sterilized.
They do not need to be thrown out.
Yeast is a germ that is found in normal mouths.
It only causes thrush if the lining of the mouth is irritated or damaged.
Get better results by reducing nipple time and pacifier time.
Note: Follow your doctor’s advice if it is different.
Breastfeeding and Yeast Symptoms:
If the mother’s nipples are red and sore, it’s probably a yeast infection.
Use an anti-yeast cream (such as Lotrimin) on the nipple area.
No prescription is needed.
Put it on 4 times per day after feedings.
Wash the cream off the nipples before each nursing. Avoid soap which dries out the skin.
Many mothers will need treatment with an oral anti-yeast medicine (such as Diflucan). Call your PCP or OB within 24 hours for advice.
Diaper Rash Treatment:
If there’s a bad diaper rash, it can also be due to yeast.
Use an anti-yeast cream (such as Lotrimin) on the diaper rash.
No prescription is needed.
Put it on 4 times per day.
See Diaper Rash care guide.
Return to Child Care:
Thrush cannot be spread to others, since it does not invade normal skin.
Your child can go to child care with thrush.
What to Expect:
With treatment, thrush usually clears up in 4 to 5 days.
Without treatment, it clears up in 2-8 weeks.
Call Your Doctor If:
Starts drinking less than normal
You think your child needs to be seen
Your child becomes worse
And remember, contact your doctor if your child develops any of the ‘Call Your Doctor’ symptoms.

The first signs of teething arrive around 4 months when your baby will start drooling like Niagara Falls and be constantly shoving her hands in her mouth.
When I saw these signs, I was excited and proud that a tooth was imminent! And then I waited and waited and waited….
My anticipation was a rookie mistake, as most kids will drool like that for about 2 months until the first tooth actually materializes, generally around 6 months.
Chronic Teething vs Acute Teething
That being said, this timeline is general as there are large variations in tooth appearance related to your genetics, but most of us will overestimate the arrival of that first tooth, which will be the bottom middle teeth aka lower central incisors. I refer to this stage of teething as chronic teething, all that drool and no rewards.
Acute teething occurs when the tooth is piercing through the gums. This is the most painful part of teething and usually, lasts 1-2 days. It’s a hard diagnosis to make since you can’t be 100% sure that the pain / poor sleeping is related to teething until the tooth pierces through the gum and you can see it, and by then the pain is receding. It is a hindsight diagnosis.
How does teething interrupt your baby’s sleep?
Your baby surfaces from a sleep cycle and is distracted by the discomfort in her gums, and can’t relax to drift back off into sleep. It’s the same way she would be unlikely to fall back asleep if she had a soiled diaper, or if she was learning a new motor skill and thinking about that skill.
COMMON TEETHING TIMES THAT CAUSE BLIPS IN BABY SLEEP: 6 MONTHS – MIDDLE BOTTOM TEETH AKA CENTRAL INCISORS
9- 11 months – A boat load of teeth coming in – upper front teeth, upper lateral teeth, and bottom lateral. There is a very long stretch of early morning wake ups around 5 am in these months related to the onslaught of teeth coming through.
15 months – first molars generally appear around this time. Where your child’s hands may be in her mouth consistently during the early teeth. I find with molars, they often only point to them at bedtime. The most common sleep disruption at this stage is at bedtime, and early wake ups, naps aren’t as affected as much as earlier on.
2 years – Second molars. There’s more variation as to when these may appear, anywhere from 2-2.5 years. And these are nasty. They are also aligned with The 2 Year Old Sleep Regression.
Some signs of teething affecting sleep include:
Short 30 minute naps, where your child was previously napping consistently for at least 45 minutes or more.
Trouble settling at bedtime, when your child was previously, settling easily without any help.
Night wakings where she was sleeping uninterrupted or with only 1-2 night wakings.
Early morning wake ups, before 6 am. There are other things that cause EWU (early wake ups).
The distinguishing features here is that in a child who is “sleep trained”, and therefore can fall asleep 100% by herself without having rocking, nursing or a bottle in her bedtime routine (by the way – it doesn’t matter if her eyes are open when she’s put in the crib), doesn’t wake up every 3 hours at night, even when she’s teething. Whomp – there it. Every 3 hours is a sign of a Sleep Crutch Problem.
There is no doubt that teething affects your child’s sleep, but it is not nearly as much as most people think.
The classic misinterpretation of teething goes something like this:
“My baby is 7 months old, never been a great sleeper, but now she’s waking up every 3 hours at night. I’m pretty sure she’s teething. I can just wait this out, right?”
These types of questions are hard to answer because I need so much more information. I need a full history to tease out what is really happening here.
Most importantly, I have to find out if she ever fell asleep by herself and if she’s ever been able to sleep 11-12 hours with 2 or less night wakings. The answer is usually no.
Often what happens at 7-10 months, is that what you were previously doing, becomes less effective in getting your child to fall or stay asleep. Often the parent will start to see waking every 3 hours at night. This is a sign that your child’s in a cycle of being overtired, and waking up after a 3 hour night time sleep cycle. These kids usually need help falling asleep at bedtime, either by nursing or rocking, and then needs that same help falling asleep.
But from Mom’s perspective, she maybe didn’t wake up this much before OR because she’s getting older. Mom expects her baby to be sleeping longer stretches. When she doesn’t sleep longer stretches and sees a finger in the mouth here or there, she assumes that this must be teething being the cause of bad sleep. Okay okay… I’m making a TON of generalizations here… and yes there are deviations, but this is the majority of issues that I see at this age. I’m hoping you can roll with me.
Can you sleep train when your baby is teething?
Obviously, we would love to avoid teething when we are working on your child developing a new skill – the skill of relaxing herself into sleep with rocking, nursing or a pacifier. The best time to sleep train is when there are the least amount of variables at play. Variables such as teething, motor development, life change, etc. However, that chronic teething is going to go on for months, and you will reach a point where you and your child, just REALLY NEED SLEEP!
And let’s not forget that the chronic teething isn’t really that uncomfortable, but the ACUTE teething is. Remember how long that acute teething lasts? Right, usually just 1-2 days. So avoid those 1-2 days and then GO FOR IT, with respect to sleep training.
I’m a chiropractor by training, I have 8 years of university health education behind me. I believe in living as naturally as possible, but when it comes to teething, I am all about pain medication for my kids for that acute period. This is because they (and I) need sleep, and that’s one variable that I can control. You should talk to your pharmacist about the best options for your family.
Moral of the story:
Yes, teething derails things a bit, but it is not as long as one might think. It is not a reason to continuously delay sleep training a poor sleeper. You could be waiting for a long time since the poor sleeping is minimally related to the teeth.

5 Tips to Set Up Your Nursery to Help Your Baby Sleep
Children from 0 to 5 years old. When should you urgently take your child to the doctor?
We are all very worried when a child gets sick; including the fear that he will certainly be sent to the hospital. And the children’s hospital, as you know, is like this: you get in with one, you leave with another. That is why mothers often refuse hospitalization or postpone a visit to the doctor, hoping that the disease will recede on its own, others prefer online consultations on forums and advice from grandmothers and girlfriends.
Fortunately for all mothers, in most cases, modern medicine makes it possible to diagnose and provide the necessary assistance very quickly, resorting to hospitalization only as a last resort. Something like in the famous series with Hugh Laurie – and MRI, and all the necessary tests, and CT scans, and, most importantly, competent pediatricians and highly specialized specialists. Unfortunately, not all polyclinics have such a set, but in one place in Moscow they definitely have it – in the department of emergency pediatrics of the Federal State Autonomous Institution “NMIC for Children’s Health” of the Ministry of Health of Russia, where doctors usually need no more than 2 hours to establish an accurate diagnosis, taking all the necessary analyzes and quickly receive their results, stabilize the child and send him home if there is no threat to life and indications for emergency hospitalization. nine0003
If you understand that your child needs a prompt consultation with a specialist, but for some reason you postpone the visit to the doctor, if you are afraid that the child will be immediately sent to the hospital ward “to clarify the diagnosis”, or he will not be given due Attention, just come to the pediatric emergency department of the Federal State Autonomous Institution “NMIC of Children’s Health” of the Ministry of Health of Russia. Here they immediately do all the necessary research and provide the child with assistance as efficiently and quickly as possible. Every year, more than 3,000 children receive care in the department, and only 2% of them are hospitalized by doctors in a round-the-clock hospital. The rest are sent home after all the necessary procedures with appropriate recommendations, or will be observed for several days in a day hospital. The department accepts children without an appointment, works on CHI, VHI and on a commercial basis. nine0003
If your child is between 0 and 5 years old, do not neglect visits to the doctor because your child is at risk. It is this age that accounts for most of the serious diseases that are well studied by medicine, are well treated, but require prompt medical intervention. Tatyana Vladimirovna Kulichenko, Head of the Department of Emergency Pediatrics, FGAU “NMIC of Children’s Health” of the Ministry of Health of Russia, Doctor of Medical Sciences, pediatrician of the highest category, WHO expert, spoke about the cases in which it is worth immediately contacting specialists for young children (we are talking about children first 5 years of life). nine0003
High temperature (fever)
First, it is important to define what a fever is from a doctor’s point of view. Fever is an increase in body temperature greater than 38°C if measured rectally (preferred as this is the most reliable way to determine body temperature in any person) and greater than 37.5°C if measured axillary depression.
Not every fever is a very bad sign, but with children under three years old it is better to play it safe and see a doctor as soon as possible. There are no legislative “terms of patience”; there is no need to wait three days, as pediatricians usually say: all the most severe infections develop very quickly and can be threatening from the first hours of the illness. The sooner you contact a specialist, the better. Examination of the child, instrumental and laboratory studies will help to understand the cause of the fever and quickly stabilize the child’s condition. nine0003
If just a high temperature seems to you not enough reason to see a doctor, then pay attention to the symptoms of intoxication:
The child refuses to drink (not to eat, namely to drink).
There is lethargy and drowsiness, it is difficult to establish eye contact with the child (some pediatricians say about such patients “the child looks into himself”).
If a child develops a rash on the skin along with an increase in body temperature, then you should go to the doctor immediately. nine0003
Cough
Cough is a fairly common symptom in children. Precisely because it seems to be a common, “understandable” sign of illness, parents often miss the moment of timely visit to the doctor. Cough can be caused not only by problems with the organs of the respiratory system. It can signal a malfunction in the cardiovascular or digestive systems. It can even be caused by a sulfur plug in the ear. Until you eliminate the cause, the symptom will not disappear!
Take your child to the doctor immediately if:
The child is less than 6 months old (whether or not he has a fever or other symptoms).
The child has a nocturnal cough.
The child has a cough to the point of vomiting.
Cough does not go away for more than 3 weeks.
Barking cough, often accompanied by hoarseness and noisy breathing.
Difficulty breathing
Any difficulty in breathing can be a life-threatening symptom, especially in infants. How to understand that breathing is difficult in an infant: when inhaled, retraction is visible along the edge of the costal arch (the child, as it were, strongly draws in the stomach when breathing). Difficulty in breathing in older children can be noticed if there is no fluency of speech: the child cannot speak in long sentences (as a rule, these are obstructive bronchitis or asthmatic conditions). nine0003
Take your child to the doctor immediately if you notice signs of difficulty breathing, especially if the breath is grunting, groaning or you hear wheezing or whistling when breathing even from a distance.
Vomiting, diarrhea (diarrhea, loose stools)
These symptoms are often associated with simple and well-known conditions that are caused by extremely unpleasant, but in modern conditions, with proper treatment, non-life-threatening intestinal infections. But if the child is not fed with special solutions for rehydration, if the volume of fluid losses is not replenished correctly, then vomiting and liquefied stools are dangerous because they lead to rapid dehydration and electrolyte disturbances due to loss of water and salts. nine0003
It happens that loose stools are not a serious problem if it happened, for example, once. If you observe it more often 3 times a day, this is a reason to sound the alarm, especially if you notice the first signs of dehydration:
Decreased frequency and volume of urination. If your child has not peed for 5 hours, see a doctor immediately!
Dryness of the skin and mucous membranes: there were fewer tears, saliva, the skin became dry and unusually flabby.
Thirst. nine0022
When to take the child to the doctor immediately:
The child refuses to drink (does not want to drink despite being very dehydrated).
The child stops urinating (break more than 5 hours).
The child is lethargic, capricious, not interested in toys (even if there is no temperature).
“Sink” eyes or fontanel (this is rare, but it is a formidable symptom).
There is blood in the stool (even if there is no diarrhea). nine0022
Skin rashes
Skin rashes are not always normal. If the rash is accompanied by fever, this is always a reason for urgent medical attention. There are children diagnosed with skin diseases (for example, atopic dermatitis or psoriasis), in which case the parents are usually already trained on how to behave when the rash increases or the skin process worsens. Then you need to go to the doctor if the measures taken previously recommended to you turn out to be ineffective – and you will most likely go to an allergist or dermatologist, i.e. to a specialist you know. But if the rash appeared for the first time, if the rashes are not associated with understandable provoking factors, this is an occasion to consult a doctor. Not all rashes are a sign of a serious illness, but a clear diagnosis by a specialist will calm you down and allow you to quickly deal with the problem. nine0003
Pain
Pain is always a symptom of anxiety, which the human body signals about danger. An intense and growing pain symptom is always a reason to consult a specialist. Remember that if a child is “teething” – this may be the cause of the child’s capriciousness and irritability, but in the vast majority of cases it does not cause a temperature rise above 37.5 * C or severe pain. Therefore, you should not write off the symptoms that have appeared on teething. nine0003
How to understand that a child is in pain:
The child cries, does not calm down.
Unmotivated excitability.
Anxiety (the child cannot find peace, a comfortable position).
Head injuries and loss of consciousness
Very often, parents go to the doctor only when the injury leaves traces (hematoma, swelling). If the child fell from a certain height (even if you did not see what exactly he hit), or he hit his head, do not be too lazy to immediately go to a specialist. Not every head injury can pass without a trace, and, most importantly, you may not see the internal damage that occurred during the injury. nine0003
An episode of loss of consciousness, “slackness” or convulsions is always a cause for immediate medical attention.
You can read more about the Department of Emergency Pediatrics of the National Medical Research Center for Children’s Health on the official website >>>
Emergencies
Cough
Cough is perhaps the most common problem that parents encounter. Very often, a cough, even if it sounds scary, has a harmless cause and goes away on its own. Sometimes coughing is a serious symptom. Let’s try to figure out how to behave when a child coughs and when to start sounding the alarm. nine0003
What is a cough?
Cough is a protective reflex designed to clear the airways. During a cough push, the air abruptly leaves the lungs and forces everything that interferes with breathing – sputum and foreign bodies – to come out. If you think about the mechanism of coughing, it becomes clear that it is far from always necessary to “suppress” it.
What causes and what does a cough look like?
The most common cause of cough is a viral infection. Viruses can cause damage to the respiratory tract at different levels – from the nose (with a common cold) to the bronchi, bronchioles and lungs, and coughing is a common symptom in all these diseases. For example, sore throat and nasal discharge flowing down the back of the throat irritate the mucous membrane of the upper respiratory tract and stimulate the cough reflex. Due to irritation of the mucous membrane of the pharynx, a dry, hacking cough occurs, which will definitely pass without treatment, but in the acute period it can be quite frequent and painful, and even disrupt night’s sleep. A runny nose and discharge along the back of the throat provoke a wet cough, while the child begins to cough when changing position of the body, especially in the morning and at night when he gets up, lies down or rolls over. If the virus infects the mucous membrane of the larynx, a false croup develops, that is, swelling and, as a result, narrowing of the lumen of the larynx, which is accompanied by a “barking” cough, hoarseness, and a characteristic noisy breath (the so-called stridor). With inflammation of the bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli – bronchitis, bronchiolitis and pneumonia, respectively – sputum accumulates in the lumen of the respiratory tract, swelling of the mucous membrane occurs, resulting in cough and shortness of breath. Unlike viral bronchitis and bronchiolitis, pneumonia is more commonly caused by bacteria and is accompanied by fever in addition to coughing and shortness of breath. In bronchial asthma, bronchospasm and accumulation of thick sputum in them occur after contact with an allergen, which also provokes a cough. nine0003
When should an ambulance be called for a child with a cough?
If the child has the following symptoms along with coughing: it is very difficult for the child to breathe: you can see that the child is breathing with difficulty, it is difficult for him to speak (or scream, if we are talking about a baby) due to difficulty in breathing, the child has “groaning” or “groaning” breathing;
children lost consciousness and/or stopped breathing; nine0022
the child’s lips turned blue.
If the child does not have the most severe symptoms, but the child is concerned, see a doctor. An important sign of trouble is the appearance of the child – if he is lethargic, looks sick and if you cannot attract his attention and catch his eye. Shortness of breath, that is, rapid breathing, accompanied by an effort of the respiratory muscles and retraction of the intercostal spaces and the jugular fossa (depression above the sternum), is a sign that indicates damage to the lower respiratory tract. If you notice shortness of breath in a child, be sure to consult a doctor. Increased body temperature, especially fever above 39- 40 ° C, also requires that the child be examined by a doctor, as cough and fever can be symptoms of pneumonia.
Special attention should be paid to children in the first months of life, because in young children, serious illnesses can be erased, and the condition may worsen suddenly. If you have a fever (that is, if the child’s rectal temperature is > 38 ° C) in children under three months old, you should definitely consult a doctor.
Should yellow or greenish sputum cause concern? nine0012
Yellow or green sputum does not always indicate a bacterial infection. With viral bronchitis and bronchiolitis, the yellow-green color of sputum is associated with the fact that cells of the mucous membrane of the respiratory tract, which the virus has damaged, enter the sputum. As a new mucous membrane is formed, the desquamated cells come out with sputum, so there is no need to be scared if the child coughs up yellow or even greenish sputum, since in most cases this is a normal manifestation of a viral infection that does not require antibiotics. nine0003
What should I do if my child coughs at night?
Most often, nocturnal cough is associated with the fact that when the child lies in bed, discharge from the nose and paranasal sinuses drain into the throat and cause a cough reflex. When a child rolls over in bed or gets up from a horizontal to an upright position, a coughing fit occurs. In such cases, the doctor will prescribe a topical treatment for the child to reduce the runny nose and, as a result, reduce the cough.
Night cough also occurs with pathology of the lower respiratory tract. Therefore, if your child is concerned about a nighttime cough, consult a doctor.
What if the child coughs to vomit?
If your child has a paroxysmal cough before vomiting, contact your pediatrician as this may be a symptom of whooping cough. Whooping cough is especially dangerous for children in the first months of life. Sometimes whooping cough develops even in children who were vaccinated against it, but a lot of time has passed since the last revaccination. nine0003
Some children have a very easy gag reflex and may vomit when they cough, even if the cough is simply due to a runny nose. If vomiting occurs against the background of coughing, feed the child more often, but in small portions.
Prolonged cough
It is not uncommon for a persistent cough to be caused by several successive viral infections. The child does not have time to recover from one infection and picks up another. In this case, the cough can last for several weeks and greatly frighten parents, although its cause is trivial. nine0003
However, a prolonged cough may be associated with allergies, including bronchial asthma, as well as whooping cough and other diseases of the respiratory tract and ENT organs (a chronic cough may even be due to earwax plugs in the ears!), so in case persistent cough, consult your doctor.
How to treat a cough?
Cough can have many causes, and each case is treated differently. Show the child to the doctor to understand what the cough is connected with and how to help the child. nine0003
If the cough is accompanied by sputum production (wet, productive cough), sputum production should be stimulated to facilitate expectoration. Give your child more fluids (for example, apple juice or warm chicken broth can be given if age-appropriate and not allergic to these foods). If the air in the children’s bedroom is dry, install a humidifier.
Unproductive (dry) cough can be controlled by reducing irritation of the upper respiratory tract. To soften the cough and soothe the airways, give the child a drink of water or apple juice, this also helps with a coughing fit. Avoid giving carbonated drinks or citrus drinks as they can irritate inflamed mucous membranes. If the child is intolerant of honey, try giving it. Children over 6 years old can suck on cough drops. If a cough interferes with sleep, going to kindergarten and school, consult a doctor, he will prescribe an antitussive. nine0003
Bath steam can help with coughing. Go into the bathroom, close the door, turn on the hot shower and wait a few minutes. After the bath is filled with steam, go there with the child, sit for about 20 minutes. Try reading a book or playing with the child so that he is distracted.
Smoking is strictly prohibited at home! This contributes to frequent respiratory infections in the child and aggravates their course.
Medicines such as antibiotics and inhalations with bronchodilators, anti-inflammatory and mucolytic drugs are prescribed only by a doctor and are not required in every case. nine0003

Fever
Fever is an increase in body temperature over 38 ºС. Some symptoms and laboratory and instrumental studies help to understand the cause of the fever and prescribe the necessary treatment.
If the fever is accompanied by a runny nose, cough, and “red throat”, the most likely cause is a viral infection. Since antibiotics have no effect on viruses, antibiotic therapy in case of a viral infection is not prescribed. nine0003
High fever (greater than 39°C) with chills should alert. Other symptoms that require immediate medical attention are the refusal of the child to eat and drink, severe lethargy, lack of “eye” contact with the child.
Parents should know how to help a child with a fever .
Only ibuprofen (10 mg/kg per dose) and paracetamol (15 mg/kg per dose) are allowed for use in children. From drugs based on ibuprofen in a pharmacy, you can buy nurofen, and from drugs based on paracetamol – panadol, cefecon, efferalgan. Metamizole sodium (or analgin), including as part of a “lytic mixture”, can cause severe blood complications, and nimesulide (nimulide, nise) can cause life-threatening liver damage. If the child does not have a severe background pathology, such as heart disease or epilepsy, and if he satisfactorily tolerates fever (is interested in others, does not refuse to drink, does not complain of pain), antipyretic drugs are given at a temperature of 38.5 – 39ºС and above.
And there is no need to achieve a decrease in body temperature immediately to 36.6 ºС! A good effect is considered to be a decrease in fever to 38 ºС. Safe and effective methods of physical cooling are rubbing with water at room temperature (not alcohol or vinegar!), which allows you to reduce body temperature by 0.5 – 1.0 ºС in a few minutes. However, if the child has chills, if he has cold hands and feet, rubbing will not be effective. In such cases, massage of the hands and feet helps, which reduces vasospasm and improves peripheral circulation, and antispasmodic drugs, such as no-shpa, are also used. nine0003

False croup
In babies, false croup occurs quite often, so mothers need to know about it. Only parents can notice the first signs of narrowing of the larynx in time and help the child in time. The reason is viral infections. In children under 5 – 6 years of age, the airways are narrower than in adults, and therefore croup develops much more often. nine0022
If a baby with a cold has a “barking” cough and a hoarse voice, it is necessary that he breathe steam over hot water in the bathroom. If this does not help, and the breath becomes noisy and difficult, call an ambulance without stopping the inhalation of steam.
What is false croup?
Croup is difficulty in breathing due to constriction of the larynx. To feel where the larynx is, you can put your hand on the front of the neck and make any sound – the larynx will vibrate. nine0003
This part of the airway is quite narrow, and if the mucous membrane swells, it can completely block the lumen of the larynx, and air will not enter the lungs. In children under 5 – 6 years of age, the airways are narrower than in adults, and therefore croup develops much more often.
Unlike false, true croup begins with diphtheria, when the lumen of the larynx is blocked by dense films. Thanks to vaccinations (DPT, ADS-M), this disease, fortunately, has become rare.
The cause of false croup is acute viral infections (for example, parainfluenza virus or respiratory syncytial virus). The mucous membrane becomes inflamed, swells, and although films do not form, as in diphtheria, the result is the same – it is difficult for the child to breathe. nine0003
How does it all start?
Usually, the usual symptoms of acute respiratory infections appear first, i.e. runny nose, cough, fever. The first signs of the proximity of a false croup appear or intensify in the evening – this is a growing dry “barking” cough and a hoarse voice.
Then the breath becomes “noisy” – at first only during crying or anxiety, that is, when the baby breathes deeper and faster. After a while, these symptoms persist even in a calm state. nine0003
With croup, it is difficult for the baby to inhale exactly, that is, the inhalation turns out to be noisy, with effort, and the exhalation remains normal. During inhalation, you can notice how the jugular fossa (depression in the lower part of the neck between the collarbones) is drawn inward.
Is it possible to prevent false croup?
There are pathogens that most often cause croup: parainfluenza virus, influenza virus and respiratory syncytial virus. If a child has contracted this particular infection, the risk of developing croup is high, and, unfortunately, there are no remedies that protect against it. nine0003
There are children who tolerate colds without this complication, but in some the mucous membrane is more prone to edema, and if one episode of difficulty breathing with acute respiratory infections has already been, it is likely that such conditions will recur. Parents need to be ready for them – until the child grows up, and the croup ceases to threaten him.
What to do with false croup?
If you notice its signs, first of all, you need to calm yourself and the child, because when you are excited, the muscles of the larynx contract, and it becomes even harder to breathe. nine0003
For a “barking” cough, as long as breathing is silent and not labored, steam inhalation may help. Turn on hot water in the bathroom, let the child breathe in moist air for a few minutes.
If this does not help and breathing becomes difficult (noisy breathing, jugular fossa retraction), call an ambulance and continue to do steam inhalation until it arrives. The doctor will prescribe special inhalations with a local hormonal preparation for croup. Don’t let the word “hormonal” scare you, because this drug works only in the respiratory tract, eliminating inflammation, and no other medicine for false croup will not be so effective. In severe cases, the doctor will inject a hormone (prednisolone or dexamethasone) intramuscularly. Don’t worry about side effects because short cycles of hormones are safe and life-saving in these situations. nine0003
If you are offered to hospitalize your child, do not refuse, because after temporary relief, breathing problems may recur.
There are conditions that can be confused with false croup, such as inflammation of the epiglottis (cartilage that closes the larynx when swallowing). This disease is called epiglottitis: the child’s temperature rises above 39 degrees, there is a severe sore throat, the mouth is difficult to open, and hormonal preparations do not help the child. nine0003
If the epiglottis is inflamed, the child is admitted to the hospital and treated with antibiotics. But this disease is rare, and false croup is caused by viruses, so it makes no sense to take antibiotics.
Is it possible to stop an attack of croup on your own?
If it is not the first time that a child has false croup, you can take home a special device for inhalation – a nebulizer (choose a compressor model, since ultrasound can destroy drugs used for croup). Your doctor will tell you what medication to have at home and how much to use if needed. nine0003
The child can return to kindergarten as soon as the body temperature returns to normal and the child feels well.

Vomiting and diarrhea
Acute gastroenteritis is characterized by an increase in body temperature (from subfebrile condition to high fever), vomiting, stool thinning. Rotavirus is the most common cause of gastroenteritis. The most severe is the first episode of rotavirus gastroenteritis in children from 6 months to 2-3 years. The peak incidence of this infection occurs in the winter – spring. nine0003
The danger of viral gastroenteritis is associated with rapid dehydration and electrolyte disturbances due to the loss of water and salts with loose stools and vomiting. Therefore, feeding the child is of fundamental importance. In order not to provoke vomiting, you need to drink fractionally (1 – 2 teaspoons), but often, if necessary, every few minutes. For convenience, you can use a syringe without a needle or a pipette. In no case should you drink the child with just water, this only exacerbates electrolyte disturbances! There are special saline solutions for drinking – rehydron (optimally ½ sachet per 1 liter of water), Humana electrolyte, etc.
The daily requirement for fluid is presented in the table:
Weight of the child Daily need for liquid 2 – 10 kg 100 ml/kg 10 – 20 kg 1000 ml/kg per kg over 10 kg > 20 kg 1500 ml + 20 ml/kg for each kg over 20 kg
In addition, ongoing fluid losses with loose stools and vomiting are taken into account – for each episode of diarrhea / vomiting, an additional 100 – 200 ml of fluid is given. nine0003
Intravenous rehydration (fluid replenishment with drips) is done only for severe dehydration and persistent vomiting. In all other cases, you need to drink the child – it is safe, effective and painless.
Smecta (but do not give smecta if it induces vomiting), espumizan or Sab simplex are used as adjuvants. Enterofuril is not recommended for use, as it is not effective either in viral infections or in invasive bacterial intestinal infections. In the diet during the acute period, fresh vegetables and fruits (except bananas), sweet drinks are excluded, and whole milk is limited only in older children. nine0003
Parents should be aware of the first signs of dehydration – a decrease in the frequency and volume of urination, thirst, dry skin and mucous membranes. With increasing dehydration, the child becomes lethargic, stops urinating, thirst disappears, the skin loses turgor, and the eyes “sink”. In this case, there is no time to waste, it is necessary to call a doctor and hospitalize the child.
The appearance of blood and mucus in the stool in a child should be alerted, because this is typical for bacterial enterocolitis. Stool with such infections is not large (in contrast to copious watery stools with rotavirus infection), false urge to defecate and abdominal pain may be noted. Drinking water in such cases may not be enough, and, as a rule, antibiotics are required. nine0003

Pneumonia
One of the serious diseases in children is pneumonia, or pneumonia. Pneumonia can pose a threat to a child’s life. Fortunately, modern medicine has learned to cope well with pneumonia, and this disease can be completely cured in most cases. Therefore, if your baby gets sick with fever and cough, contact your pediatrician. If pneumonia is suspected, a doctor may order an x-ray of the lungs to confirm the diagnosis. nine0003
What is pneumonia?
Pneumonia is an inflammation of the lung tissue, that is, the deepest part of the respiratory system. Normally, gas exchange occurs in the lungs, that is, oxygen from the air enters the blood, and carbon dioxide is released from the blood into the environment. When part of the lung is inflamed, the breathing function in the affected lung is affected and the child develops shortness of breath, that is, rapid and labored breathing. Substances produced during the immune system’s fight against bacteria cause fever (if the body temperature rises above 38 ° C, this is called a fever). The accumulation of sputum in the alveoli and bronchi and swelling of the mucous membrane stimulate the cough reflex, and a cough occurs. If the focus of pneumonia is near the lining of the lung, called the pleura, chest pains may occur when breathing and coughing. nine0003
What causes pneumonia?
There are many infections that can cause pneumonia. Streptococcus pneumoniae is the most common cause of so-called “typical” pneumonia. Pneumococcal pneumonia is accompanied by fever, cough, shortness of breath, lethargy, and decreased appetite. Less commonly, pneumonia is caused by other pathogens – hemophilus influenzae (Haemophilus influenzae) type b, pyogenic streptococcus (Streptococcus pyogenes) and Staphylococcus aureus (Staphylococcus aureus). “Atypical” pneumonia, which is usually milder and quite contagious, is caused by mycoplasmas and chlamydia. Less commonly, pneumonia is caused by viruses (adenovirus, RS virus) – such pneumonias are rare and can be very difficult. Pneumonia can develop suddenly or be a complication of the flu. nine0003
What are the symptoms of pneumonia?
The most important symptom of pneumonia is fever. In a young child, fever may be the only manifestation. Fever above 39.5°C with chills and fever that is poorly reduced after taking antipyretic drugs should be especially alert. Although not always a high fever that does not respond well to antipyretics is a symptom of pneumonia. This may be a manifestation of a respiratory viral infection.
The second important symptom of pneumonia is a cough. The nature of the cough matters. Particularly alarming are the “deep” cough, cough at night and cough before vomiting.
Severe pneumonia is usually accompanied by shortness of breath, that is, rapid and labored breathing. Sometimes a symptom of pneumonia is pain in the abdomen, which occurs due to irritation of the pleura (lung membrane) during inflammation of the lung area adjacent to the pleura and due to frequent coughing and, accordingly, tension in the abdominal muscles. nine0003
Very important signs that speak in favor of pneumonia are symptoms of intoxication, such as fatigue, weakness, refusal to eat and even drink. At the same time, unlike pneumococcal pneumonia, with mycoplasmal pneumonia, the child may feel well. Coughing and wheezing in the lungs are symptoms not only of pneumonia, but also of bronchitis. It is very important that the doctor distinguishes pneumonia from bronchitis, since antibiotics are not always required for bronchitis and only if its mycoplasmal etiology is suspected. nine0003
What can happen if pneumonia is not treated?
This is fraught with complications that are more likely to occur if pneumonia is left untreated. Complications of pneumonia are inflammation of the pleura (pleurisy) and the formation of a cavity in the lung filled with pus (lung abscess). In such cases, a longer course of antibiotics will be required, and sometimes the help of a surgeon.
How to treat pneumonia?
If you have bacterial pneumonia, your doctor will prescribe an antibiotic. The doctor will decide which antibiotic to choose depending on the suspected cause of the pneumonia. In most cases, the child can be given the antibiotic by mouth (as a suspension or tablets) rather than by injection. The effect of the antibiotic occurs within 24-48 hours. If after 1 – 2 days the child does not feel better and the temperature rises, consult a doctor again. nine0003
Usually a child with pneumonia can be treated at home. Hospitalization is required for severe and complicated pneumonia, when the child needs intravenous antibiotics, supplemental oxygen, pleural punctures, and other serious medical interventions.
It was a beautiful day in coastal Oregon when fourteen-year-old Lisa and her brother Joe decided to go for a swim in the ocean. The tide changed suddenly, turning their lively voices into terrified screams as brother and sister realized they were being pulled into deep water. Joe managed to swim back to shore, but could only watch as his sister was pulled farther away from him.
Alerted by Lisa´s screams, a yellow Lab unexpectedly jumped into the water and started paddling strongly towards her. “Call my dog! His name is Norman. Call his name,” the Labrador´s owner yelled to Lisa from the shore. Guided by Lisa´s voice, Norman valiantly reached her and towed the exhausted teenager back into safety.
This real life story becomes even more miraculous when you learn that Norman was completely blind.
Finding out your dog is going blind can be devastating but, as with Norman in Oregon, most dogs can get along well—and even thrive—without being able to see. The fact is eyesight is not a primary dog sense. By making a few minor changes to the way we interact with them, a visually impaired dog can adjust quite well to a household’s lifestyle.
“A person with a blind dog needs to adapt their own life in many ways to the dog’s disability, yet these things are neither hard nor challenging—in fact, they are easy and even fun for the owner,” says Gayle M. Irwin, a speaker, rescue pet advocate, and author of four books about blind dogs.
Here are six tips from experts on how to make a few changes to enhance your vision-challenged dog’s life and help him lead a normal life:
Blind Dog-Proof Your House. Once your dog loses his eyesight, he will at first feel extremely confused about his surroundings. Award-winning dog trainer and author Caroline D. Levin, (who also, incidentally, worked as part of the veterinarian team who attempted to restore Norman’s eyesight—Lisa´s parents were so grateful for Norman’s lifesaving heroics that they provided Norman with a visit to a veterinarian eye doctor to see if his vision could be restored; unfortunately it could not be. ), suggests spending some time guiding your dog around the house and fencing off any possible hazards, like a pool and stairs. “Just make sure that dangers are lessened in the beginning because after a while, a blind dog develops a mental map,” she says. Miki Saito, a certified dog trainer specializing in blind dogs, recommends removing or covering any dangers with cushion material until your dog learns the layout of the house. “See from your dog’s eye height to check if there are any sharp objects or corners that would injure his eye, face or body,” she says. And don´t neglect the yard. Make sure that it’s fenced off. Check for holes in the ground and keep plants trimmed, as they could cause further damage to your dog´s eyes.
Don’t Rearrange Your Furniture. Dogs have an incredible ability to map their environment as long as it’s kept constant. Overtime, a dog will memorize a house’s layout and the location of the furniture, getting a picture of the familiar places in his head and making him less likely to bump into things. “The dog will learn how to get around the house so don’t move your furniture; leave it as it is so that they are comfortable, so that their knowledge of their house stays the same and they don’t have to try to figure things out when things get changed,” says Irwin.
Change the Way You Communicate. Saito stresses the importance of understanding that communication with a dog changes once they go blind—it becomes more vocal. “While a dog is losing his eyesight, he is more likely to become highly sensitive to sounds and being touched, and become very fearful or reactive,” she says. New behaviours are taught mainly by using sounds and touches as prompts or cues. Making your dog feel safe and positive reinforcement are both key when adapting your dog to their new situation. “I use some sounds and words as guidance for my blind dog in order to let her know where she should go or what is going to happen to her, and help her move or do things with ease,” Saito says.
Tune In To Their Other Senses. Using smell and texture can also be a quick way to orient your dog. Levin recommends choosing three different scents and spraying them in the three most common areas the dog uses. These could be where his food and water are, the back garden where he relieves himself, and a resting place, like his bed or a crate. Then, physically guide your dog to these places, so that he becomes familiar with the scents and what they mean. Smells are also a great way to indicate danger. “It could be a simple thing, such as when your dog smells a certain scent, like perfume or vanilla extract, it means slow down because the stairs are right there,” she says. Using different textures can also help your dog navigate more easily inside and outside the house. Set throw rugs near pieces of furniture, wood chips near and around bushes and trees and rough carpet in front of the back door to indicate the way to go out to the yard.
Re-Train Your Dog.It’s essential for the dog owner to spend some time training the dog after they lose their sight. Teaching the pet to “Stop” or “Stay” on command is an important safety measure since it can prevent them from advancing into a dangerous situation. Using the commands “Step Up” and “Step Down” can be useful not only to help them navigate the stairs in your house, but for getting up and down a curb in the street. Another important skill to practice is to re-train your dog to come when called. “When they are blind and can´t see you, you just have to do things a little bit differently. Mainly, that means that you have to call them with a sound that is continuous. You have to say something for a long time so that they can hone in on where you are,” says Levin.
Play Games. When a dog loses her eyesight there is a risk that she can become withdrawn. Using toys is a great way to keep your dog entertained and engaged with her surroundings. “Often times, when they are not visual, dogs will stop interacting with their environment just because it’s easier. Make sure that you pay special attention to check that they are interacting with you, with another pet, or with their home environment and that they have access to toys,” says Dr. Caryn Plummer, veterinary ophthalmologist. Dog owners should experiment with different types of toys to identify which one best engages their dog’s other senses—hearing, touch, and smell. Plummer recommends toys that make sound, such as squeaky toys, or toys that engage a dog’s sense of smell, like a food-stuffable toy or a puzzle toy you put little treats in, as ideal choices for vision-impaired dogs. Keeping your dog active and continuing to take her on daily walks is extremely important too, as this will improve her other senses, as well as her health, wellbeing, and happiness.
Overall, simply have patience and remember to constantly give positive reinforcement. This will help your dog adjust to her new situation. Dogs are exceptional creatures that can quickly adapt to new conditions as long as they are given enough time, love, and attention. As Irwin notes, “Dogs teach us lessons in courage, perseverance, loyalty, compassion, kindness, and joy—and they don’t have to have all of their senses or limbs to do so. ”
Many obstacles and situations are not dangerous if your four-legged buddy can see, but become hazardous if they are blind. Blind dogs can unknowingly walk in front of a car, fall down the stairs, bang into sharp objects, and get into all kinds of situations when outside. If you think your dog is having trouble seeing, it is essential that you make an appointment with your veterinarian. Because there are so many reasons for blindness in dogs and you may not be able to tell that a loss of vision is happening, it is a good idea to visit your veterinarian at least once a year. The veterinarian will be able to tell if your dog cannot see even during a regular check-up.
Lack of ability to see can be a terrifying and even life-threatening disorder for your dog. Blindness may result as a sign of a different disorder, such as diabetes, or it could be from injury, and sometimes it is due to a hereditary disease you did not know your dog had. The truth is, it is sometimes difficult for you to tell if your dog is blind because dogs are so adept at coping. However, you may notice your pet bumping into things, becoming afraid of loud noises, and not wanting to play or go outside. This is often due to fear because your dog has no idea what is happening and it is frightening.
Despite the diagnosis, however, a blind dog’s quality of life can still be happy and positive. Encouragement and reinforcement on your part during walks and while training your canine companion to adapt can have a beneficial impact on your pet’s well-being.

Diagnosis of Blindness in Dogs
Your veterinarian will need to do a complete physical, which includes eye examination, pupil reaction time, reflexes, body temperature, blood pressure, weight, breath sounds, pulse oximetry (oxygen level), respirations, and heart rate. Tell the veterinarian what signs you have noticed and any abnormal behavior or eating patterns. Bring your pet’s medical and vaccination records if possible.
Diagnostic tests will likely need to be done to rule out underlying diseases such as diabetes and Cushing’s disease. Some of the tests needed may be blood glucose, serum chemistry analysis, complete blood count, comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP), urinalysis, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), serum cholesterol, bilirubin, and tonometry. Other procedures usually done at this time are serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP), serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), electroretinography (ERG), ACTH stimulation test, and ocular ultrasound. You may need to take your dog to a veterinary ophthalmologist for further testing.

Treatment of Blindness in Dogs
Treatment depends on the cause of the blindness. With some cases of blindness, such as SARDS and PRA, there is no treatment. If there is an underlying disease, such as diabetes, Cushing’s Syndrome, or hypertension, that will need to be treated first. Otherwise, the only treatment may be to train your pet to live with blindness. For example, there are points to remember as you contemplate how to care for a blind puppy. As well, an older dog who has recently experienced vision loss will require assistance and understanding as they get used to their new life.
Use your voice often when spending time with your blind dog. They will quickly learn to use their keen sense of hearing as a replacement for sight. Keep their water bowl in the same place at all times and designate a certain spot for feeding. Provide your pup with a safe zone that allows them space for playing without the fear of banging into something. Make sure your home is dog-proofed by moving sharp tables out of the way and closing off stairways. Alert newcomers to the fact that your dog is blind so that they introduce themselves vocally before touching your dog.
These steps will ensure an easier transition into their new life. Ask your veterinarian for tips and talk to others who have dogs who have no sight. Your veterinarian will want to treat underlying diseases that caused or contributed to the blindness. These diseases may be:
Diabetes
The veterinarian will need to give your dog insulin and may have you continue giving insulin injections daily for the rest of your pet’s life. You may also need to put your dog on a special diet and exercise program.
Cushing’s Syndrome
Treatment for Cushing’s depends on the cause of the syndrome. If it is caused by a tumor of the adrenal glands, the veterinarian may be able to remove it with surgery. If the tumor has not spread, your dog might be fine afterward.
Hypertension
If your dog has hypertension (high blood pressure), medications such as angiotensin-converting-enzyme (ACE) inhibitor, special diet, and exercise routine is recommended.

How Blind Dog Tara Found a Family – Dogfriend Publishers
Our trainer from Kyiv Natalia Martyshko tells the story of a blind dog named Tara who found a new home. How the adaptation and training of the “problem” dog took place – about this in today’s article in the Dogfriend Blog.
This story is dedicated to all blind dogs and their future and present families.
I will divide my story into several informational parts. These were the stages of everyone’s life – the dog, volunteers, friends, future family and me, the person who participated in all this. To say that I was sure that I would succeed is to deceive you. However, I had important tools – knowledge of the new cynology, zoopsychology, experience in communicating with dogs and people. So, I gathered the whole team on board the invisible ship, and we set off on a difficult journey to save the blind mongrel Tara. nine0003
Part one. Acquaintance
I don’t know exactly how this puppy lost his sight and what he got over, but Tara’s childhood was obviously filled with anxieties and problems of survival.
I met Tara, then simply “Blind Girl”, after I was contacted by the owner of the “home overexposure”, who is in a private house. Knowing that I was studying New Cynology, she asked me to look at the new dog, as the volunteers brought him not only with a broken paw, but with some strange eye movement. According to her assumptions, the dog did not see. It was a mongrel dog (pooch), a girl aged about 6 months, not contact. The fracture turned out to be complicated and neglected, the dog was in pain, did not trust anyone, was wild and lived in constant fear. She needed urgent treatment and was no longer able to be outside. nine0003
The first thing we did was veterinary medicine. Having visited a couple of clinics, having passed the examination, I heard the verdict – an old fracture, the dog is blind, there are risks of neuralgia and mental instability. By saving her, we deliberately doom the animal to further trials. Perhaps living in a family will partially make her life easier, or at least secure.
Statistics on shelters are harsh – the frequency of adopting healthy animals leaves much to be desired. And then there’s the “problem” dog with a disability. So, the chance of finding a family for her decreases. Doctors unanimously called for euthanasia, without a person she would not survive. Decide! It is expected of me. There came a moment when the world froze around me, there were no sounds, the silence became deafening. Tears, pity, torment, heartache, common sense all faded into the background. The test was emptiness, my helplessness and inaction. And only in the acquired knowledge and experience I found strength and solutions. It became fundamental “in the construction of my ship and this voyage”. The firm position “she will live” was both our choice and our responsibility. From that moment on, with the whole team of my relatives and friends, we began to participate in the fate of Tara. nine0003
Part two. Treatment and rehabilitation
After giving the puppy first aid, putting a cast, the dog was transferred to a “private foster care”. During this period, the following signs of stress appeared: fear, freezing from 5 to 15 minutes, dullness of reaction, refusal to eat, and then, on the contrary, excitement for her, there were problems going to the toilet, she endured for several days. Based on this, a stress management plan was drawn up. At first, Tara was isolated from the rest of the dogs, fed separately, taken to the toilet in her arms outside. nine0003
We gave injections and treated the fracture. The gypsum required care, and at night Tara was taken from the aviary to the house where the owners live, in the hallway. After that, the puppy itself began to ask to come into the house, slowly learning new household items of people, first of all, by taste. Gradually, the dog began to recognize the territory, it was a little accustomed to the street and the environment. At this time, I only talked with Tara. There was no talk of any training yet, since the dog was only getting used to the place where it lives, to contact with people, plus the factor of constant treatment. nine0003
One of the first noticeable changes was her attitude to nutrition: it was during this period that Tara learned to eat without fear, not to overeat. She got used to being fed, that other dogs would not take the food. She began to get acquainted with dogs, avoiding some and making friends with others, getting to know cats and being interested in them.
The owner of the overexposure made a huge contribution. Thanks to her caring and patient participation, the dog recognized and reached out to us, despite the fact that medical manipulations were performed every day. Tara approached people she knew and from whom she felt kindness. Tara began to learn to trust. We removed step by step everything that could cause stress. nine0003
Surprisingly, it was the disease that became the factor that, instead of pushing the dog away from people even more, brought Tara closer to us. Our touches were associated with feeding (delicacy), caress and kindness, attention and stroking. She was still afraid – but she already wanted to communicate, she endured all the procedures that took place virtually every day. A double-edged sword – it could completely close, clog at the slightest of our wrong behavior, and the pain shock could turn into aggression. But we did all our actions deliberately and according to a previously drawn up plan, accompanying them with positive reinforcement. nine0003
Part three. Relocation
Does the dog always have a family, a friend? No, not always unfortunately. One of our main fears was that we would not find a family for her. We were lucky, and we resolved the issue at home quite quickly, although the new owner could not immediately pick up the dog – thus, we had time to prepare the dog for the move. By the time of the move, we prepared Tara, she was vaccinated, sterilized.
Name
Name – Belaya Tara, the dog was given from the first days, when it became clear that there would be no euthanasia, and all the time she was addressed by name, so even at the preparatory stages the dog got used to it, and by the time of the move – the name was one of the bridges to the contact of the new family and the puppy. nine0003
Smell
When a family was found for the dog, and this was my friend, I started introducing Tara to a new person. And one of the main techniques was the use of smell, creating a connection with a new home in an already familiar place. I used a soft sweater that belonged to the future owner. The sweater was placed next to Tara during feeding and sleeping for two weeks before moving.
Preliminary acquaintance
It is best if there is such an opportunity for the future owner to come and communicate with the dog before the move. Unfortunately, with Tara, this was not possible due to many circumstances. In addition to the people who entered her zone of trust, with whom she began to communicate and calmed down after two months of overexposure, we added the smell of a new person. So, we got a preliminary acquaintance only through this method. nine0003
Something familiar with myself
And then came the long-awaited and exciting moment of the move. By this time, Tara had prepared a surprise for us. She found a friend and has not been separated from him for the last 2 weeks. It is difficult for me to explain this connection, how among all the animals at overexposure they found each other. It turned out to be a month old, very tiny kitten. But not just a kitten, but as it turned out later, seeing with only one eye. You can’t look at all this half-sighted tribe without tears. And we decided where one is – there is a place for two, let alone cook porridge so cook, so the cat went home with Tara. We also took items to the new home that the dog knew well, so that he would not be confused among new unexplored smells. But as it turned out, 200 grams with a tail was the most important thing for her. nine0003
My friend, who will become Tara’s family, passed the aptitude test. Are you sure? How ready are you to change your routine and lifestyle? The dog does not see. It’s a pity?! Pity passes in a couple of months, and the animal is with you for the rest of his life. After all, our task is to ensure that any animal, and not only Tara, lives the life allotted to it in a family that loves it. Therefore, family and friend, only from this position I asked her – are you ready? I am for a clear and clear awareness!
Media preparation
We have carefully chosen a place for bedding, in the part of the apartment where the main activity of the family takes place. Tara will get used to voices and everyday sounds. We have also prepared a place for solitude. We agreed that at first the furniture would remain in the same places, they even limited the movement of chairs. Place bowls for food and water in the kitchen to accustom to the feeding place. Having determined that the dog will eat natural food, I built a nutrition scheme based on the age and preferences of the dog itself. Delicacies and several tinkling and squeaking toys, ammunition for walking were purchased. nine0003
Adaptation in the family
We have passed part of the way successfully, super important remains, and all depends on this stage.
My friend has no experience with dogs. Tara did not live at home, she does not walk on a leash, and she does not know how to walk with a person at all, the dog is with disabilities. Our task is to socialize her, make her family and give her a full life.
I had many fears: 1. How a dog will accept an apartment, a closed alien space. 2. Rejection of a stranger to her, despite the already familiar smell and careful preparation. 3. Difficulties walking. This is the descent and ascent without an elevator along the stairs, walking on a leash and the process of walking with a person. 4. How to explain to the dog that the person next to him is good. nine0003
No one could have predicted how another change of territory would hurt Tara. We carefully prepared in advance: from the first days the dog was given special homeopathic drops Bach Flowers: Walnut, recommended for changes and moving in the life of the animal.
Surprisingly, Tara adapted quite quickly to the apartment. Perhaps the kitten helped her. The cat found the “master bed” at home for the first time in a day, the dog began to enter the bedroom only a day later, and to sleep on the sofa in the living room by the end of the first week. The kitchen was surveyed before all the rooms. The issue was resolved with the apartment. nine0003
Walking problem
The collar that Tara used to run with before changed to a harness. At first, the owner carried the dog outside in her arms, since it was difficult to explain to the animal what exactly she wanted from him. We avoided subjecting her to the new stress of ignorance and compulsion, and it was not known exactly how the paw had been broken – whether from a blow, or from a fall, or in some other way. The paw healed – the fear remained. Tara did not fully trust her paw, in the first days after the removal of the cast, she did not even use it. nine0003
What I definitely didn’t expect was that the dog wouldn’t go to the toilet, either outside or at home. For several days after the move, she did not go to the toilet at all. This was new to me – and I had to go back to an earlier observation that in the first days in foster care, she also endured for several days, and then hid in the bushes when she was carried out to the toilet. It told me that she was completely unprotected. Therefore, it is often a big problem for puppies to go outside – after all, this is a new environment for them, where they do not feel safe. So in our case: the dog was scared. She cannot relax, does not trust, feels discomfort in the presence of a person (after all, we cannot let a blind dog off the leash in a new place). Going to the toilet turned into a new stress. nine0003
After a couple of days, Tara began to relax in the place where she felt safest – at home. Long walks led to the fact that we returned home, and the dog peed at home. This once again confirmed that the dog is looking for seclusion and reliability. Later, Tara began to get used to the street. Every time Tara went to the toilet outside, she got a treat. When we coped with this, we began to move further: to teach the dog to walk on a leash in principle, and after a week of lifting several times a day on his hands up and down – to teach him to walk up the stairs and enter into a trusting relationship with the dog – such a blitz task. nine0003
We started by getting to know the entrance. For a short time, the door to the stairwell opened, and Tara listened to the sounds, after that she received a treat and returned to the apartment.
To overcome the stairs, I imagined myself with my eyes closed and stepping forward – into the abyss turned out to be incredibly difficult, so the training was divided into stages – a process in which we learned each step, learned the word “step”, tried to teach by tapping with a stick, but the method of steps and voice approached more, with the reinforcement of one word by the process. If the “step” is the dog must fully trust, the word is trust – action – praise, plus all the time to be as close as possible, even supporting it slightly on the harness (during the descent, the dog does not know the height and sharply lowers the paw, especially if the height is incorrectly calculated on a sore paw, this is quite painfully felt as a “stumbling”). nine0003
Later, Tara began to listen to footsteps and words. Since the process was repeated frequently throughout the day, Tara could learn the same steps each time. Starting with the first independent steps from the street up to the front door to the front door, sniffing the keys, opening the electronic lock door with a beep, and ending with our door in the stairwell. We began to get the result precisely from the climb up, when we put the dog’s paw on the steps up and let the dog understand how this whole scheme works, while saying the word “step”. Each time we let the dog learn a little more, each time a couple of steps, then half a flight, then one flight, we walked until the dog began to get lost (the landings between the flights were especially difficult). For every action, for every step – praise and delicacy. Then she got a treat while walking the whole flight, then the floor, and then all the way. nine0003
If the dog stopped and lingered, we also stopped and waited, giving it time to think and explore new smells and sounds. After about two weeks of daily practice (sometimes going down and up took longer than the rest of the walk), we actually learned to walk the stairs from scratch.
At the same time, we were undergoing a full veterinary examination, with blood donation, ultrasound and other tests, so in addition to training, Tara was also subjected to the stress of treatment. In the process of treatment, diuretics were also prescribed, because of which observations were made and a schedule of accurate walking was drawn up. Some drugs can act throughout the day, not just in the morning, so not walking often enough led to downtime – notable actions have shown the need for walking every 4 hours. One of the walking schedules: 6-00, 10-00, 14-20 (+k), 18-30, 22-50. nine0003
Over time, after the end of treatment, we began to increase the interval between walks, allowing the dog to get used to, tracking how much longer he can tolerate, how much he has the desire to go to the toilet and confidence when he is taken out. Walking also meant playing and discovering something new for the dog. As soon as Tara began to trust my friend, she began to calm down and turn on her hearing, smell, touch, and tactile perception of the soil. Walks have become measured and thoughtful, randomness has gone. nine0003
Part four. Happy childhood
Today, after three and a half months of living in a family, this is what we have.
Tara underwent a medical examination and treatment, the causes of blindness were identified, and it was determined that her sight would not return. The dog receives high-grade natural nutrition, time for rest and sleep. Established a schedule of walking and adherence to it.
Tara has learned to play with toys and knows the location of all items in the apartment. The friendship of animals is strengthened: the cat is a guide and a researcher for the dog, learning from each other and exchanging experience in communication. nine0003
The dog fully walks outside, loves this process, plays with other dogs, recognizes people and remembers routes on a walk. On the street, he does not just follow the mistress, but enjoys and satisfies his curiosity. Tara perfectly uses all four paws when walking and playing, tucking her broken paw only freezing when she meets the unexpected and still unknown. After learning the novelty, the foot naturally lowers.
She is now in a wonderful period of “late childhood”. Since Tara did not have a childhood at all as such, it took place mainly in the struggle for survival, now she gets everything. Until the final treatment and getting used to the house, the puppy did not behave like an eight-month-old puppy in the house. Tara did not show the activity expected from a child at that age, but was more in a lying-waiting state. Therefore, now she is doing “deliberate hooliganism”, from which she enjoys – we find out, we try. This process is not completely destructive (parquet is not uprooted and walls are not demolished). She recognizes objects by taste – she just never played like that before, the dog has the joy of taking things apart, recognizing his toys, being a little mischievous – which is not a problem. nine0003
In all these games, you have to protect Tara from dangers, and the most dangerous thing in the house is electricity. Together with the kitten, Tara discovered the wires. They hid everything except the wire of the mobile heater. Most of the wire was hidden under the rug. And while we were doing all this, Tara and Gavryusha (that’s the name of the kitten) lost interest in the wires. They discover something new every day, and we just can’t keep up with them.
What are our plans for the future: getting to know and playing with dogs, because a dog needs the company of his relatives. Attraction to travel, easily and confidently push the boundaries. To be continued…
Author’s note
Tara is the goddess of Buddhism. White Tara is called “Seven-Eyed”. She has seven eyes on her body: three on her face, one each on her palms and soles of her feet. These eyes allow her to see all living beings with insightful wisdom and compassion. They help her to see everything that is happening around and provide support to everyone who needs it. Here we have such a blind and deeply seeing dog White Tara.

Chester is my angel of freedom
The story of Svetlana Telitsyna , owner of a guide dog, head of the Wise Dog club, winner of the Best Russian Dog Best Tandem 2020 title, about how she lost her sight and found a four-legged dog friend
I have loved street dogs since childhood
– I have always loved dogs. But it was never possible to keep her at home. I am from a military family, we often moved, lived in service apartments. I just dragged yard dogs home and washed them in the bathroom while my parents were not at home. Dad was then very surprised: “Where did the fleas come from in the bathroom ?!”
I was friends with the yard dogs, deeply and cordially: I cooked oatmeal, bought stew with the accumulated money, stirred it and took it out into the yard in a can to feed. Where did you get money from? Parents gave me ice cream. Donated bottles. nine0003
Mom knew about it: she is very attentive. And besides, when I went out into the yard, tailed and eared ones ran towards me from all nooks and crannies. They are very grateful!
I was not afraid of them at all. It is worth whining somewhere for a dog – I ran to see what happened to it. I could calmly take a paw from a whining yard dog and remove glass from it, then process it and give it some piece of sausage as a consolation.
Jimmy, Asya, Chip, Lord found me even in a strange yard… These were my shaggy yard friends. I was easy with them. It all ended when my eye disease started…
Four years of pain, despair – and blindness
Svetlana Telitsyna with Chester. Photo by Tatyana Shpakovskaya
I started having vision problems in 1996. I was 12 years old. Doctors now write in my anamnesis: “The etymology of the disease is unknown. ” But one of the studies showed that this is a complication after the flu. Suddenly the blood vessels in the eyes began to burst, as if dark spots appeared before the eyes. Eye pressure began to rise, pain appeared. Examinations showed neovascular glaucoma, a very unexpected diagnosis for adolescence. nine0003
I spent several months in hospitals, starting with Morozovskaya in 1996, and then non-stop until 1999: the Helmholtz Hospital, MONIKI, the Fedorov Institute, Krasnov … I completely studied the geography of ophthalmological clinics. Sometimes I was discharged just for the weekend so that my psyche would not suffer. All this time was accompanied by constant pain, sometimes unbearable. Operations, operations, operations…
I was operated on by the best Russian specialists in eye microsurgery. But it all ended with complete blindness in both eyes. nine0003
At the Fedorov Institute, another luminary examined me and said: “One can delve endlessly into your eyes. But the result will be null. Think about what exactly you need. And ended the tears, stretched for several years. My parents directed all the power of their love, with which they wanted to save me from blindness, to my social adaptation.
“Daughter, don’t cry, I’ll be your eyes!”

If you see a stylish, cheerful, cheerful disabled person, he most likely has a good rear. Parents, friends, mentors, volunteers… It was they who created an island for him in this world that is absolutely not adapted for the disabled. For myself, I can say this for sure. I’m like a presidential candidate who has a whole staff behind him. I am the cover, the fruit of labor, love, the work of my loved ones and relatives: mom, dad, brother, brother’s wife. A disabled person cannot do it alone! nine0003
At the age of 15 it was especially difficult. Hormones – natural and medicinal. Disruption of social ties: I moved from a regular school to a school for the blind and visually impaired. I had to accept that now my world is the world of the blind. I remember well how I looked down from the balcony with my unseeing eyes and thought, “Why should I live?” … At the age of 12 you were jumping, running and galloping. At 13, you could see with at least one eye. At 14, you saw at least vaguely. And by the age of 15 you can’t see your own hand…
My family saved me. My older brother noticed a change in me. Too thoughtful, too dull, stuck on the balcony … He told his mother: “Something is not right with Svetka.” nine0003
They began to watch me closely, trying not to leave me alone with myself. At first it irritated me very much: where I am, there they are. I’m on the balcony – they immediately start watering the flowers here …
Technical means of adaptation – telephones, computers – were then inaccessible to us.
But my mom and dad read books and textbooks aloud to me, studied with me. My parents always told me: “Blind does not mean dumb. It’s just a different form of life. You will live a full life!” And they did everything to make my life complete. nine0003
In my school for the visually impaired there were parties for the sighted and parties for the blind. One day my classmates and I went on a field trip. And then the “sighted” – those who moved independently – gathered and went to Luzhniki for the ice cream festival. And I went home with my mother by the hand. I walked and cried: the holiday of life is not for me. Life passes there, behind your back. More than 20 years have passed since that moment.
But I remember how my mother turned my life around with her words. As she told me then: “Daughter, don’t cry! Let’s go, I’ll be your eyes. I can’t take my eyes out and share with you. But I’ll be wherever you want.” And she took me, crying, to this holiday. nine0003
I went there with my mother, ate ice cream, slowly dissolving my grudge against life…
There are such feats for which they give medals: pulled out of the fire, rescued from under a truck… And there are such invisible maternal feats: yes, pulled out from under the truck of her own thoughts.
Mom ended up quitting her job, dad started working for five, and my brother also went to work early. And even my brother’s wife – when he later married – always took care of me. For my family, love is like a verb! I graduated from school with a medal, the Moscow State Law Academy with honors, worked for 11 years in a law firm. I’m married. I swim and skydive. I live a full life. But my family gave it to me. nine0003
Three professional exams
Elena Orochko , director of the Training and Cynological Center “Assistant Dogs for the Disabled: – To raise a guide dog, we first buy a puppy at about 3 months of age and give it to a volunteer family, where it is just should grow in love and care. Once a week, our curator comes to them, looks at the puppy’s behavior in different situations at home and on the street. The puppy is selected at several levels: at the selection stage; at the stage of education in a volunteer family; during training in our training center. nine0209 The dog may fail selection at any stage. For example, if it turns out that she is distrustful of strangers. Or afraid of sharp sounds (car exhausts, fireworks, thunderstorms), heights, stairs, unstable surfaces. Of course, the puppy can be cautious. But one thing is caution, which he will quickly overcome, and another thing is fear, which will not pass and interfere with work. Some of the puppies and young dogs do not become guide dogs, we arrange them in ordinary families, where these traits do not have such significance. If we see insurmountable shortcomings in a puppy, then at some stage we offer volunteers to keep him. Sometimes families agree and even rejoice in this. And some find the opportunity to leave this one and take the next one to be brought up. nine0003
Everything changes with a guide dog!
Photo by Evgeny Gerasimov and Sofia Monstein
Chester came to me two years ago. With a guide dog, everything changes! Imagine: I had two points of support, and now there are six. What is the stability and coordination of movements!
When you walk alone, you are hardly seen as a blind person, especially if you are well dressed, with makeup and without a cane. They won’t let you in and won’t give up your seat. And when you are a team, you are hard to ignore. You have to be reckoned with. nine0003
Before, I couldn’t even get to the seats on the subway. And now Chester comes up to those sitting and looks into their eyes like that, and also moves his eyebrows, as if he wants to say: “I don’t understand why you are sitting?! We’ve already arrived!” And people are embarrassed! They immediately get up. I often say that Chester is my “eyes on a leash”.
Of course, some time is needed for getting used to, “setting up” life with a dog. For example, I had to learn to ride the escalator with the dog. I didn’t succeed right away. But we did it. The curator of the canine center was always in touch and was always ready to help me. nine0003
After a while you begin to feel the dog as yourself. By the vibrations of his paws, because they are transmitted to the harness, by the turn of his head, I already understand that something is bothering Chester ahead and I become more careful.
In all the time I’ve been traveling with Chester, I haven’t hit a single one. And before the dog, it was different – once I even had to sew up my forehead: because I “entered” a pole on the road.
The most unexpected obstacle on the route is always people. Especially people with cell phones. nine0003
Chester is used to trusting people. But if the person walking towards us does not change his trajectory, Chester raises a panic: “Chief, chief! There is something wrong with this man!” He understands that we need to bypass this person like a sick animal. He starts blocking my way and with his body pushes me around. And if you really need it, it will stand across.
Just yesterday I went shopping with my dog and felt the thrill of every step. How cool it is to be exactly at that point in the Universe where I am now! It is a sense of completeness, freedom of movement. I am not lying if I say that today I feel only gratitude. To the people I met in my life, to those who raised our dog, to him himself. nine0003
Now it seems to me that this dog is just made for me. But cynologists explained to me that this is a feature of the Labrador – to adapt to the owner. He reads my emotions. He always looks me in the face. I am a goddess for him! It was worth getting a dog to feel like a goddess! (laughs)
When he shudders, sits down, is tense or happy, wags “the whole Chester”, I feel it both in my hand and in the waves that come from him. When I’m sad, he can come, put his toys on my knees: “Mistress, don’t be sad! I will give you my beloved toucan!” nine0003
I don’t just feel Chester. I see him. It is hard to explain. But you can’t see the most important things with your eyes, only with your heart. It is so. In these respects, I am not blind.
Labradors as guide dogs gradually replaced shepherd dogs
Elena Orochko , director of the Training and Cynology Center “Help Dogs for the Disabled”, shares the secrets of training guide dogs: – When I just started training guide dogs, we were engaged exclusively in shepherd dogs . But gradually they were completely replaced by Labradors. Labradors have many advantages: lack of aggression, lack of increased excitability, which a shepherd needs to maintain its alert state. For a guide, this is useless. nine0209 Labradors are very friendly. For a guide dog, it is important, on the one hand, to inspire confidence in the surrounding people, and on the other hand, not to show mistrust itself. A blind person is often offered some kind of help, and his dog should not scare people away from him. It is also important that Labradors easily endure changes. An ordinary dog, as a rule, lives in the same family, with the same owners, from puppyhood. And we get a puppy from a breeder, settle for a few months in a volunteer family, then she lives and trains in our training center, where a trainer becomes her temporary owner. And only after that the dog gets to a blind person. nine0209 For most Labradors, transfer to intermediate families does not become traumatic, does not depress them. They enjoy meeting new people. Of course, the dog remembers his owners, he rejoices when the volunteers, with whom he lived for several months, come to visit. But parting for a Labrador is not a tragedy. As a rule, people are worried.
A guide dog must have a day off

There are people who take the guide dog like a magic wand into service. But just as I cannot do without him, so he cannot do without me. I’m in the same mood for him as he is for me.
If I feel, sitting in the subway, that he is worried, I try to check. Is he suddenly uncomfortable? Or does the neighbor’s bag hit him? I always take him water with me (for such cases there is a special drinker with a nipple), a bowl, a napkin, a bedding, if he has to wait for me somewhere.
As passionate as I am, I must make time for him to attend to his needs during the trip. I know that after a lot of people he is overwhelmed with emotions – he needs to move to the lawn. And it is my responsibility to offer it to him. While he is on the route, he cannot leave on his own.
I control his physical and emotional stress.
I know, for example, that if we worked with him “in sweat and soap” for a week, he should be given a day off.
Tired – not tired, I go with him to the playground, play with a puller (a dog toy in the form of a rubber ring), so that he just runs, jumps. He needs to relieve stress, relieve tension, and sometimes feel like an ordinary dog without a leash and harness.
Love is not blind
Elena Orochko : – It happens that contact between a blind person and a dog does not work out. We all know about our dogs. But those people who are on our waiting list are not. Therefore, we try to learn about them as much as possible. For the past two years, we have introduced the practice of preliminary visits to the blind. nine0209 First, to understand the person himself. Secondly, to help him form an idea of what a guide dog is. People often do not take into account that the dog is not only a helper, she herself needs care and attention. She needs to be fed, she needs to be walked. This is a constant and sufficient burdensome concern. When we meet a person and move on to a confidential conversation, we can learn a lot about him. About his physical condition, living conditions, routes. Then it is easier for him to pick up a dog: there are more cheerful, active dogs, there are calmer ones, there are those who can walk willingly and a lot, there are those who will work well if this work is not enough. nine0209 There are times when we come and see that a person suffers from alcohol addiction and lives in such conditions where it is scary to hand over a dog. Then we can refuse him. We are responsible for this dog. After all, it was we who chose such a mission and fate for her. Maybe she didn’t want to be a guide, she wanted to lie on the couch (laughs). Therefore, we are responsible for its continued existence, including legally. In the contract that we conclude with a blind person, giving him a dog, it is written that the dog remains our property. We give it to use for life. But in the end we can take her away if the conditions of her detention prove unsuitable. There have been such cases. But they were non-confrontational. The man himself understood that he could not cope with this task, and by mutual agreement we took the dog. nine0209 Of course, we keep in touch with all the owners of our dogs. And now there are about 150 of them. We have a special map on which we mark their “habitats” with flags. You see: two of our dogs live in Kaliningrad, one lives on Sakhalin. So we can safely say: the geography of distribution of our dogs stretches from the west to the east of our country.
And leave the dog at the entrance…
In the New Tretyakov gallery. Photo by Anna Gupalo
The hardest thing for us is to hear: “Please leave your dog at the entrance.” It is fundamentally important for Chester to have physical contact with me. He, like a big nanny who has lost her child, begins to get nervous, anxious, rush about like a tiger in a cage. nine0003
And although there is Article 15 of the Federal Law 181 “On the Social Protection of the Disabled”, according to which my guide dog has the right to be with me in public places, no one has ever let us through immediately, without a fight. Even if I have a guide dog passport, which I always carry with me. Even when explaining my civil rights, references to the law. The guards just shrug their hands: “But it’s still a dog.”
The situation of rejection of guide dogs in our society and misunderstanding of their significance is well illustrated by a recent fact: Boris Vishnyakov, the head of the Blind Racing Karting School, was invited as a motivator to the conference dedicated to the Olympics “I am a professional”. But they warned that they would not let him in with a guide dog at Moscow State University, where the conference was held. He refused to participate in the conference. nine0003
And sometimes it comes to scandals. In the clinic, for example, where I came with Chester for help, I had to call the police. The nurse’s arguments were simple: “You went to the clinic, why did you drag the dog here …” So this is my technical means of rehabilitation! By law, as a disabled person of the first group, I have the right to TSR in the form of a guide dog.
I want to live an ordinary full life: go to shops, to the bank, to the post office, to a beauty salon. I have friends that I would like to meet in a cafe. I really love museums and I want to receive the same energy of joy from art as other people. How can I convey this to the museum guards, cafe administrators, who always perceive my dog painfully? As a source of dirt and infection. Yes, sometimes there is more dirt from people …
I always have tissues with me. At the entrance to a public institution, I take off the overalls and rubber slippers from the dog (if the weather is bad), wipe the paws and tail with napkins.
His nails are always clipped. Because I follow him, take care of him, take him to grooming. Why can’t we become the same visitors with him?
But still, I must say, the situation is changing. Yes. In all the nearby stores, I had to meet the administrators. But now they know us by sight. And for them, a guide dog in the store has become the norm. Chester and I are now a given for them. And then, by magic, the surrounding space changes. Even buyers react normally to the dog. And even if they see us somewhere on the street or in other stores, they smile at us, greet us. nine0003
Even the guards say to each other: “It’s a guide dog, don’t you know?! They can!”
“Oh, they just can’t part with a dog, they even go to the store…”
Yulia Pashkova with Svetlana Telitsyna and dogs. Photo by Evgeny Gerasimov and Sofia Monstein
The ideal attitude towards a blind person with a dog is benevolent and neutral. If you can help, come and ask how you can help. You can not – do not climb, it is better to pass by.
No comments like: “Oh-oh-oh, poor thing, unhappy thing, why did you go to the store with a dog, do you really have no one …” if only on the Internet, everything would be brought home to you … “or” Oh, they can’t part with the dog directly, they even go to the store … “. nine0003
Disrespect for people with disabilities is manifested very often and unconsciously, sometimes, for example, people find it possible to talk about me behind my back. Aloud. “Oh, look, blind, but just so well-groomed.”
Now it’s easy for me to turn these situations into a joke. Because I have no resentment or aggression inside. And I no longer regret losing my sight.
For me there is no difference between the words “blind” and “blind”.
If you or a loved one has unexplained symptoms that could be related to the brain or nervous system, your doctor may recommend a neurological exam with a specialist.
Neurologists are specialists who treat diseases of the brain and spinal cord, peripheral nerves and muscles. Neurological conditions include epilepsy, stroke, multiple sclerosis (MS) and Parkinson’s disease.
Dr. Nhu Bruce, neurologist at Houston Methodist, also commonly sees patients for:
Uncontrolled headaches
Memory loss
Imbalance
Numbness and pain
If you’re experiencing these symptoms, you probably have a lot of questions.
Common reasons to visit a neurologist
“A thorough neurological exam is the most important tool I have as a neurologist,” Dr. Bruce explains. “It can help differentiate and localize the causes of common complaints.”
Dr. Bruce says these are the six signs that it is time to visit a neurologist.
Chronic or severe headaches
If you get migraine headaches, you should probably make an appointment with a neurologist, especially when the symptoms are associated with neurological deficits or tried treatments prove ineffective.
Chronic pain
When pain is chronic, and your primary care doctor can’t help you manage it, you should consider a referral to a neurologist because there could be another underlying reason for the symptoms.
Dizziness
Experiencing vertigo (feeling like you’re spinning) or having difficulty keeping your balance could be a sign of something more serious.
Numbness or tingling
Numbness or tingling, especially when it occurs on one side of the body or comes on suddenly, could be a sign of a stroke or other serious condition.
Movement problems
Difficulty walking, shuffling your feet, tremors and unintentional jerks, can all be signs of a nervous system problem.
Memory problems or confusion
Worsening memory problems, personality changes or mixing up words could be signs of Alzheimer’s disease.
What to expect during a neurological exam
A neurologist can help identify the cause of symptoms and create a treatment plan for both common and complex neurological conditions.
During a neurological exam, instruments, such as lights and reflex hammers, may be used to assess the nervous system. Motor skills, balance, coordination and mental status may also be tested.
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an example of a complex condition that may be best treated by a neurologist.
“MS has various forms, and the treatment options have changed significantly over recent years,” Dr. Bruce says.
Patients can benefit from the expertise of a neurologist who is familiar with the latest research and treatment options for MS and other neurological conditions.

Skills such as taking a first step, smiling for the first time, and waving “bye-bye” are called developmental milestones. Developmental milestones are things most children can do by a certain age. Children reach milestones in how they play, learn, speak, behave, and move (like crawling, walking, or jumping).
In the first year, babies learn to focus their vision, reach out, explore, and learn about the things that are around them. Cognitive, or brain development means the learning process of memory, language, thinking, and reasoning. Learning language is more than making sounds (“babble”), or saying “ma-ma” and “da-da”. Listening, understanding, and knowing the names of people and things are all a part of language development. During this stage, babies also are developing bonds of love and trust with their parents and others as part of social and emotional development. The way parents cuddle, hold, and play with their baby will set the basis for how they will interact with them and others.
Positive Parenting Tips
Following are some things you, as a parent, can do to help your baby during this time:
Talk to your baby. She will find your voice calming.
Answer when your baby makes sounds by repeating the sounds and adding words. This will help him learn to use language.
Read to your baby. This will help her develop and understand language and sounds.
Sing to your baby and play music. This will help your baby develop a love for music and will help his brain development.
Praise your baby and give her lots of loving attention.
Spend time cuddling and holding your baby. This will help him feel cared for and secure.
Play with your baby when she’s alert and relaxed. Watch your baby closely for signs of being tired or fussy so that she can take a break from playing.
Distract your baby with toys and move him to safe areas when he starts moving and touching things that he shouldn’t touch.
Take care of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally. Parenting can be hard work! It is easier to enjoy your new baby and be a positive, loving parent when you are feeling good yourself.

Child Safety First
When a baby becomes part of your family, it is time to make sure that your home is a safe place. Look around your home for things that could be dangerous to your baby. As a parent, it is your job to ensure that you create a safe home for your baby. It also is important that you take the necessary steps to make sure that you are mentally and emotionally ready for your new baby. Here are a few tips to keep your baby safe:
Do not shake your baby―ever! Babies have very weak neck muscles that are not yet able to support their heads. If you shake your baby, you can damage his brain or even cause his death.
Make sure you always put your baby to sleep on her back to prevent sudden infant death syndrome (commonly known as SIDS). Read more about new recommendations for safe sleep for infants here.
Protect your baby and family from secondhand smoke. Do not allow anyone to smoke in your home.
Place your baby in a rear-facing car seat in the back seat while he is riding in a car. This is recommended by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration pdf icon[1.15 MB / 1 page]external icon.
Prevent your baby from choking by cutting her food into small bites. Also, don’t let her play with small toys and other things that might be easy for her to swallow.
Don’t allow your baby to play with anything that might cover her face.
Never carry hot liquids or foods near your baby or while holding him.
Vaccines (shots) are important to protect your child’s health and safety. Because children can get serious diseases, it is important that your child get the right shots at the right time. Talk with your child’s doctor to make sure that your child is up-to-date on her vaccinations.
Healthy Bodies
Breast milk meets all your baby’s needs for about the first 6 months of life. Between 6 and 12 months of age, your baby will learn about new tastes and textures with healthy solid food, but breast milk should still be an important source of nutrition.
Feed your baby slowly and patiently, encourage your baby to try new tastes but without force, and watch closely to see if he’s still hungry.
Breastfeeding is the natural way to feed your baby, but it can be challenging. If you need help, you can call the National Breastfeeding Helpline at 800-994-9662 or get help on-line at http://www.womenshealth.gov/breastfeedingexternal icon. You can also call your local WIC Program to see if you qualify for breastfeeding support by health professionals as well as peer counselors or use an online directory to find an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultantexternal icon in your community.
Keep your baby active. She might not be able to run and play like the “big kids” just yet, but there’s lots she can do to keep her little arms and legs moving throughout the day. Getting down on the floor to move helps your baby become strong, learn, and explore.
Try not to keep your baby in swings, strollers, bouncer seats, and exercise saucers for too long.
Limit screen time. For children younger than 18 months of age, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that it’s best if babies do not use any screen media other than video chatting.
Make sure your child gets the recommended amount of sleep each night: For infants 4-12 months, 12–16 hours per 24 hours (including naps)

▷ How to care for a newborn boy in the hospital and the first months of life
Now the long-awaited moment has come when the doctor confirmed by ultrasound that you will have a boy. After the first pleasant moments of euphoria, the expectant mother wonders what kind of care should be for a newborn boy .
We will try to answer all your questions and prepare you for the happy time of motherhood.
Care of a newborn boy in the hospital and during the first days
After the first emotional meeting with her toddler, a young mother may simply be confused, because her baby is so tiny! Small arms, legs, fingers: it is so important not to harm and maximize the healthy development of the baby.
First, let’s look at how to care for a newborn boy in the hospital. Most of the information will be given to you by a nurse who will show you the basics of skin treatment, so you can easily repeat them yourself at home.
In fact, all care in the maternity hospital will be similar to the care of a boy in the first days of your newborn baby’s life.
How to communicate with your baby
Don’t be afraid to be touched. For harmonious development, the baby needs regular contact with his mother. Don’t worry that you lack self-confidence right now: it will come with experience.
How to pick up a baby
First place one hand under your little one’s neck so that the head is in the crook of your elbow. With your free hand, you need to support the back and buttocks of the baby.
How to put the baby in the crib
Hold the little person close to you and gently lean with him towards the crib. Try to make your movements as smooth as possible. You do not need to immediately remove your hands after you have already put the child in bed. Let the baby get used to it a little and get used to it.
How to care for the skin and mucous membranes
Newborn boy care from the first days also includes washing, care of the nose, ears, natural skin folds, and washing.
Pay attention to the umbilical wound: it must be clean and dry. Let it heal on its own and fall off naturally. Do not use lotions or creams for treatment: this area is washed with peroxide.
How to care for a newborn boy in the first months of life
After returning from the hospital, the mother will have to master all the nuances of how to care for a newborn child – your boy.
Let’s consider each moment in more detail.
Bathing
The optimal temperature for bathing is 25ᵒ C. Try to bathe the little man at the same time before feeding. It is important that there is no draft in the room in which the child is being bathed, and that the air temperature is not below 25ᵒ C.
Hygiene of the genital organs
The boy can be washed from front to back and vice versa. Unlike caring for a newborn girl, there are some peculiarities of caring for a newborn boy: first you need to wash the penis, and then the rest of the area.
We recommend using special soaps only after a bowel movement. In all other cases, you can limit yourself to warm water.
After you have bought a toddler, you need to treat the genitals with a diaper cream or a special powder. Putting on a new diaper is necessary only after the cream is completely absorbed.
Eye and nose cleaner
You need to wash the child’s face and eyes twice a day so that they do not turn sour and inflamed. And also clean the nose with special wet turundas to free the airways.
Nail hygiene
Special nail scissors with rounded ends must be purchased for this purpose. It is best to trim your nails after bathing, after trying to distract your baby a little first. The shape of the nails should be rounded so that the little sun cannot accidentally injure itself.
Of course, what you dress your baby in plays a huge role in healthy and harmonious development.
Although your future protector and reliable mother’s support is growing up, at this tender age your son is very dependent on what fabrics his children’s wardrobe is made of.
Demi recommends dressing your baby in quality clothes made from natural fabrics that will not cause redness, irritation or unpleasant allergic reactions.
DemiBaby knows how to organize the care of a newborn baby boy in the first month and ensures that your little champion will grow up to be the healthiest and happiest in soft and skin-friendly baby jersey.
Caring for infants with HIV
Test results confirm that the baby is HIV positive. Are there any particularities in caring for such a child?
Remember: a baby living with HIV grows and develops just like their peers. Therefore, caring for him as a whole is no different from caring for any other child.
Regularly take your child to see a pediatrician and for medical examinations at the Centers for the Prevention and Control of HIV/AIDS. Carefully follow all the recommendations that you received from the experts. Go through all the prescribed tests and examinations on time – this will allow you to monitor the health of the baby and notice potential problems in time.
Give your child all medicines prescribed by specialists in time and carefully monitor their doses. Your doctor will tell you how to give this or that drug.
Follow your vaccination schedule as directed by your doctor. Babies living with HIV may be more vulnerable to other infections, and vaccinations will help their immune systems build up additional defenses against disease.
Monitor your baby carefully and tell the doctor if the baby has symptoms or even just behaves unusually. Pay special attention to the following signs:
loss of appetite,
poor weight gain,
fever,
skin rash,
diarrhea or vomiting,
cough and difficulty breathing.
As with all children, a healthy daily routine is very important for a child living with HIV. The baby needs to get enough rest. Newborn babies sleep about 20 hours a day, babies under 2 years old – from 15 to 12 hours, older than 2 years old – about 12 hours. More precisely about how much and how much the child should sleep, the pediatrician will tell you. Do not forget about daytime sleep for a grown baby. It will help him feel cheerful and cheerful during the day and give him enough energy to play.
Take your child for a walk. Walking activates the metabolism, strengthens the body in general and the immune system in particular. Summer heat or frost is not a reason to refuse a walk. Just make sure that the baby is dressed according to the weather, does not overheat and does not freeze.
Temper the child. Hardening allows you to strengthen the immune system and prevent the development of colds in any baby. You can learn about the basic principles of hardening and its methods suitable for your child from a pediatrician. Follow all his advice carefully.
When the baby grows up, organize his communication with peers – walks on the playground, trips to visit. Later, your child will be able to attend all children’s institutions on an equal basis with other children without any restrictions.
Remember: HIV-positive children are more susceptible to infectious diseases than their peers. Because of this, other babies, even with signs of a mild cold, can be a real danger to your child. But not vice versa. In all other cases, you do not need to isolate your baby from other children or create “special conditions” for him.

Like housing, the issue of affordable and accessible child care in Summit County affects many residents. Based on the 2020 census, there are 1,426 children under the age of 5 in the county, with 26 licensed providers who have an estimated 611 licensed slots for children 5 and younger.
“We recognize that this is critical subject matter,” Frisco Town Manager Tony O’Rourke said at a town work session Nov. 9. “ … At the end of the day, we’re in a system that’s plagued by a lack of slots for kids, inadequate compensation, benefits and housing for their staff and a tremendously high financial burden on parents. ”
O’Rourke said fixing the child care issue is a challenging, fragmented and expensive proposition. Following up on a similar discussion from January, Frisco Town Council was still in favor of pursuing a tuition-assistance program similar to one in the town of Breckenridge. Its program helps pay preschool tuition for families who make up to 150% of the area median income — or up to $144,150 for a family of four — and whose child care cost exceeds 13% to 16% of their gross income.
O’Rourke estimated monthly tuition for Summit County Preschool — a nonprofit that is Frisco’s only privately managed day care — costs $3,102 for two children. With an annual tuition of $37,224, that means a Frisco family of four would spend about 39% of its income on child care if they make 100% of the area median, or $96,100.
According to Summit County Preschool’s director, there are 54 children currently enrolled, and roughly half of the children’s families work or live in Frisco. The school has the capacity to serve 79 children; however, due to staffing issues, it cannot enroll more students in order to maintain the teacher-to-child ratios required by the state.
Additionally, there are two in-home day care providers in Frisco. Those providers receive no money from the town of Frisco, whereas the town usually gives more than $65,000 to the preschool each year.
One solution O’Rourke mentioned included increasing teacher wages, which are currently $16.61 an hour at the preschool. It would cost the town roughly $60,000 a year for every dollar per hour increase for the school staff as well as the in-home providers. Council did not support the idea.
“I think it’s a slippery slope to do wage assistance for these individual businesses,” Council member Andy Held said. “They absolutely need to get paid more, but I don’t think it’s up to us to pay them more.”
Another solution mentioned was housing assistance, such as the four units at Mary Ruth Place dedicated to the local workforce. Council member Melissa Sherburne said she didn’t like limiting the use of thee town-owned rental units.
“I’m not in favor of us providing housing specifically for child care,” Sherburne said. “We cannot choose between a teacher or a child care worker or (a health care worker). In my opinion, that’s not up us.”
Ultimately, Town Council felt the tuition assistance was the best move. Council currently has $250,000 earmarked in the 2022 budget for child care, and the town of Breckenridge has offered to administer the program for $7,500 a year.
The program aims to reduce the cost for Frisco families that fall between 73% and 150% of area median income, and O’Rourke estimates there are 40 to 50 families who reside or work in Frisco that need child care. Following the model of the average, annual assistance grant of $6,000 in Breckenridge, that means it would cost the town of Frisco between $240,000 to $300,000 a year.
“The Breck offer is so generous — not from an economic standpoint, but from an administrative standpoint,” Council member Andrew Aerenson said. “It represents everything we want to be doing, which is collaborating, bringing this into a county system, and it will hopefully evolve. … (The Breckenridge program) seems to be a very well-regarded program.”
With Summit County Preschool at capacity, Town Council was in favor of expanding the program beyond Frisco as well as looking at other buildings — such as the current location of the Peak School if it relocates — to help. O’Rourke said he plans to bring more details back to council at an upcoming meeting to get the program underway by the beginning of the new year.

Our Programs
Our school is open year-round, Monday through Friday from 7:00am – 6:00pm. From our full-time child-care and preschool programs, to our year-round programs for school-aged children, we have a program for your family and child to love and grow with.
Preston Kiddie Kollege Programs include everything your child needs to learn and grow.
Our programs are tailored to each age group, and daily schedules for each program include:
Nutritious Apple
Meals & Snacks
Beginning at age 12 months, all PKK programs include breakfast, lunch, and two snacks daily. Our school’s menu features a variety of tasty meals and fruits & vegetables that kids actually look forward to. Our PKK parents love to know that their kids are eating well while away from home.
Security camera access
Camera Access
With video camera access to your child’s classroom, outdoor playground, and common areas like our indoor gym, you are able to check in on your child at any moment in the day, from any location. Camera access is password protected, regularly updated, and highly secure – only PKK families can gain access to view our school’s cameras.
Fun outdoor playground
Outdoor Play
All research points towards the importance of outdoor play during a child’s early years. Starting with our infant program all the way through school age camps, time is built into each day to make sure time is spent outdoors on our giant, wrap-around-the-building playground! (Weather permitting, of course).
Large indoor gym
Indoor Gym
Texas weather can make the outdoors not very play-friendly for many days, or sometimes weeks, at a time. Our school has a spacious indoor gym that children of all ages love to take advantage of on hot, cold, or rainy days!
Digital daily sheets to keep track of child’s learning and development
Digital Daily Sheets
PKK’s classroom-specific digitally delivered daily sheets are your gateway into the most important information from your child’s day. Daily sheets for younger classrooms include detailed information from feeding and potty times throughout the day, while older classrooms also include items such as topics learned and specific observed behaviors.
Original and unique early childhood curriulum
Original Curriculum
Our monthly themed curriculum is always developed in-house by our teachers to maximize creative activities and ensure that the material covered is relevant to each classroom and the individual students in that classroom. Our teachers plan for dress up days, art and cooking projects, science experiments, and daily circle time, worksheet, and activity learning to keep their classroom engaging and exciting.
Arts and crafts that engage creativity
Arts & Crafts
All PKK classroom schedules have time built in each day for arts and crafts. Art projects are always the students’ work – not the teacher’s. Seasonal crafts made at school always go home to be enjoyed by the whole family.
Music and dance time
Music & Movement
Our classrooms incorporate music throughout the day’s activities, but also designate time for just listening to music and moving around! Dancing to music helps children develop rhythm and finetune gross motor skills, all while having a blast.
Reading and learning the alphabet
Language & Literacy
Early exposure to phonics makes the world of difference in ensuring that your child eases into literacy learning. Beginning at age 12 months, our teachers routinely practice naming lowercase and uppercase letters of the alphabet, and making the sounds that each letter makes. Older age groups then begin connecting the sound each letter makes with what it looks like to sound out common sight words. .. all before Kindergarten!
Beginning at age 12 months, PKK kids are introduced to numbers and counting on a daily basis. Our older preschool classrooms emphasize numerical understanding and prepare students for Kindergarten through early learning of addition and subtraction.
Spanish guitar
Spanish
Our classroom teachers cover basic Spanish vocabulary and play Spanish children’s songs for the students starting at age 12 months. By setting early groundwork for second language learning, completely new regions of children’s brains are activated during development.
Science
Science & History
Oftentimes, subjects like science and history are neglected in early childhood education for being “too complicated for kids”. However, by introducing science experiments and important historical figures to children, their interest in these subjects are piqued and motivate them to learn as much as they can about the world.

Shepelev ridiculed his son’s nanny from Zhanna Friske
photo from open sources
The 38-year-old TV presenter spoke sharply about the “inappropriate” behavior of adults. Dmitry Shepelev was angered by the child care assistant.
Former host of the program “Actually” – a young father. He has an 8-year-old son Platon from singer Zhanna Friske and a 2-month-old Tikhon from his fiancee Ekaterina Tulupova. The daughter of interior designer Lada from her first marriage is also growing up in the family.
Shepelev captured his son and stepdaughter on the street. They walked together in the rain, holding an umbrella. The girl was leading a dog on a leash. The showman opened up about those around him, in whom he noticed shortcomings.
ADVERTISING – CONTINUED BELOW
“Why do many adults, when they see children or dogs, start acting like complete idiots? A big, imposing man with a belly, with a black beard sees a dog and starts whining: “Shabaka-baaaaaka, uuuu, shabaaaaka …” Well, not a moron? Or now a feminine thing about a baby: “What a crap. Khalesiy”. Familiar, right?! Do you feel like you’re getting nauseous?” — wrote the showman.
Evaluate the revelations of Dmitry Shepelev
A native of Minsk could not find a common language with Plato’s nanny. The woman struck Dmitry with inappropriate, in his opinion, words addressed to the schoolboy.
“We had a nanny on probation, she had to go for a walk with the child. She couldn’t lure him in any way and couldn’t think of anything better than how to take his jacket in an outstretched hand, start shaking it and saying: “The jacket wants to go for a walk. NA NA NA. The jacket wants to go for a walk. In my opinion, she confused the dog with the child… But none of you, of course, does that. You are all normal and keep yourself in hand, ”the ex-civil husband Friske mocked.
Shepelev’s followers emotionally appreciated his revelations. Many were surprised by the reaction of the celebrity to the positive message of others.
“The jacket wants to go for a walk. You made my day!”, “Well, children evoke affection and applying diminutive and caressing words to them somehow turns out by itself, I don’t see anything terrible here”, “Is it a good morning if the post is an irritable person?”, “But I don’t it’s a pity when they approach my dog. She rejoices insanely at compliments! Let him become even a little happier”, “We don’t hold ourselves in our hands! We are idiots”, “Thank you for the jacket, I will use it”, “Why are you so annoying petting tone? And why are there so many insults to people who, in fact, have done nothing wrong?”, “What a gesture, you are an unpleasant person, not as nice as you want to appear initially!” they commented.
Friske’s father Vladimir Kopylov sued his ex-son-in-law. Dmitry threw away his father-in-law’s gifts to Plato.
Shepelev showed a tender photo with his firstborn. Plato suggested that dad feed his younger brother to the dogs.
MOSCOW, November 18/ Radio Sputnik. Stylist Vlad Lisovets told the site mk.ru that he considers the death of the singer Zhanna Friske “destined from above. ” Lisovets and Friske were friends for almost 20 years. According to the stylist, he still has not come to terms with Jeanne’s early departure. Lisovets said that he “feels” the singer, although he does not dream of her. Vlad Lisovets is also sure that Zhanna’s death is a sign from above. Lisovets added that only good things were said and said about Zhanna Friska, and her departure “made us think.” Singer Zhanna Friske died on June 15, 2015. The reason for the artist’s departure was an inoperable brain tumor. Zhanna Friske was 40 years old. “I believe that at every time, in every country, a similar incident should occur so that people think a little. We were shown that this can affect anyone. It’s one thing when a person disappears from the world with bad luggage behind him And it’s another matter when a person who helped others so much leaves,” Vlad shared his opinion.
Lisovets added that only good things were said about Zhanna Friska, and her departure “made us think.

Quick crossing
dec. 2021
While on our way to Windsor, we took the tunnel route to cross the river. This is one of two ways to cross into Windsor via Customs and Immigration. I’m not sure if theirs a particular advantage to taking the tunnel versus Ambassador Bridge. Possibly the views you get from the bridge of Windsor and Detroit. The tunnel does seem quicker though.

Something unique in the world, right in the Detroit / Windsor area
March 2020
Detroit area, and decided to use the connecting tunnel. It’s seems that if you’re connecting from downtown Detroit to downtown Windsor (or visa versa), this is the best route. But distance travelers, or those heading for the distant outskirts might be better advised to try the Ambassador Bridge. Our passage through the tunnel went smoothly, the toll fees are reasonable and easy to pay, and staff on both sides are friendly and efficient. Apparently this is the only vehicle tunnel in the world where you descend into it in one country, and emerge in another…

Drive through the Detroit Windsor tunnel. It is the second busiest in the U.S. It is also the first international tunnel built for vehicular traffic. The middle of the tunnel has flags painted on the wall. One Canadian, one American. At this point you leave one country and enter another. Your cost will differ. 4.75 Canadian on the Canadian side and 6.50 on the American side. As you exit on the American side the first street you come to is Jefferson. Turn right and head for Belle Isle which is in the middle of the Detroit river. Cost to enter is 5.00 dollars for a sticker that is good for a year. Visit the fountain, museum etc but head for the aquarium. It is the oldest operating aquarium in the U.S. It was built in 1904..closed to the public from 2005-2012 and has reopened. It is small , quaint and limited in exhibits but it is historical

The second busiest crossing between the United States and Canada
Dec. 2019
I have visited Canada only once in my 79-year lifetime. In the early 1970s, I flew from Chicago to Toronto to cover a professional hockey game at the iconic Maple Leaf Garden. So while we are visiting Detroit, Michigan, I was determined to drive through the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, the second busiest crossing between the United States and Canada. Completed in 1930, it was the third underwater vehicular tunnel constructed in the United States, following the Holland Tunnel between Jersey City, New Jersey, and downtown Manhattan, New York, and the Posey Tube between Oakland and Alameda, California. The two-lane highway tunnel that connects Jefferson Avenue in Detroit to Goyeau Street in Windsor, Ontario, is used by 13,000 vehicles (no large trucks or motorcycles) daily. It isn’t easy to make the trip but it’s the kind of thing you have to do at least once, just to enjoy the experience. There are security checks and an increased fee of $6.25. The tunnel is 75 feet below the surface of the Detroit River and extends 5,160 feet, 120 feet short of a mile. If you’re claustrophobic, you can list to Detroit radio station WJR AM 760 while you’re driving through the tunnel.

Friendly service
Oct. 2019
I’ve been crossing here for ten years and almost always get fast, friendly service from toll collectors and border officers alike. The Canadian ones ask fewer questions and smile more, but they are almost all nice in my experience. The tunnel is only rarely backed up. Just check the schedule for games and concerts so you don’t get caught in crazy traffic.

Review of the tunnel bus
Aug 2019
Easy way to travel between Detroit and Windsor. The ride costs 5$ (Cdn or US) and you can pay directly on the bus but will need exact change or buy a ticket in advance. There are a few stops on either side. There was some traffic in the tunnel on the way over to Detroit so it took longer (35 minutes), but quite quick on the way back (15 minutes). Also border crossing was quite easy and painless.

Home | Full Heart Child Care
At Full Heart Child Care, it is our belief that every child is entitled to a safe, nurturing, and loving environment. We believe that the spiritual and emotional development of a child are just as important as the intellectual. Our teachers deliver the individualized care and support for each child that cultivates a setting in which every child can learn and love to their fullest potential. At Full Heart, we teach and practice the ideas of full acceptance for those of different races, religions, and abilities. Above all else, we are in the business of filling hearts, enriching minds, and inspiring the souls of every child in our care
OUR PROGRAMS
Play-Based Learning
At Full Heart, children are allowed to do what they do best, play. Our play-based learning approach provides children with opportunities to engage in activities that they enjoy such as dramatic play, sensory experiences, block play, and process based art. The monthly curriculum themes allow teachers to plan meaninful experiences that enhance these areas of play and foster children’s growth and learning. We believe children learn best when they are able to just have fun!
OUR STORY
The idea of Full Heart Child Care started back in the summer of 2016, when Ed and Mandy Gigliotti enrolled their daughter, Aliana in a local, family owned child care center next door to the building they had recently renovated to run their businesses. Mandy kept having this feeling in her heart that it needed to stay a daycare, so they spoke to the director who assured them nothing was going to change. A couple weeks later, families were notified that the center was closing….immediately. Ed and Mandy were blessed to have the opportunity to be able to buy the property and with a couple books on Amazon and help from a former real estate client (Amanda Hellebush), were able to fully renovate and open as Full Heart Child Care in the spring of 2017! The most important goal was to create a facility that is warm and welcoming to families, has highly qualified teachers, offers organic meals and healthy choices, and also prepares our children for kindergarten and beyond. One of Full Heart’s core values is that it takes a village to raise a child and that is really what it’s all about. The trust built between families and teachers is what makes it such a special place. The staff are honored to be a part of raising each and every child. Through electronic daily reports, a focus on health, wellness, social skills, and Christian values, and a genuine investment in the education of young children, the Full Heart Community has and continues to touch so many families in the Rochester area. Over the next three years, our wait list grew to 100+ families; Mandy and Ed knew the community needed our help now more than ever. In the midst of a pandemic, construction began on the building next door to double the size of Full Heart. As can be expected, there were setbacks, long days, and A LOT of work but, it was all worth it to see our doors open for 40 new families in January of 2021. The name Full Heart was chosen because every child’s heart and soul should be as full as possible and not just full in terms of knowledge, but full in terms of feeling so much love from their caretakers. With Full Hearts we are so grateful to serve this community, Mandy and Ed Gigliotti

Blush Cowork, focused on women and day care, opens in Cary
Blush, a new women-focused coworking space in Cary, includes day care options for working mothers.
Submitted
CARY
The pandemic has hit women workers disproportionately hard, as a lack of child-care options forces many mothers to stay home to care for their children.
More than two years into the pandemic, the number of women in the workforce still hasn’t recovered to 2019 levels, according to figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Now, a new coworking office in the Triangle is hoping to provide an opportunity for some of those working mothers.
Opening this week in Cary, Blush Cowork enters a competitive field, with coworking companies from homegrown organizations like Raleigh Founded to large-scale national providers like Industrious expanding here.
Blush, though, is hoping to stand out by gearing its services specifically to women entrepreneurs and freelancers — and by providing a day-care option.
“It was very hard to live up to my role as a parent and my role as an employee when I had two kids sitting right beside me,” Blush co-founder Alison Rogers, a mother of two, said in an interview. “Actually, it was impossible.”
That experience sparked Rogers’ idea for creating a space that catered to the needs of women. While Blush is not just for women, Rogers said, everything in its office, from the design to the programming, has women in mind.
Located at 201 Shannon Oaks Circle in Cary, Blush has 11,000 square feet of office space, including 14 private offices, five conference rooms, a kitchen, a private mother’s room and a patio.
Child-care services are being provided by PlatinumSitters, a company that provides on-demand baby sitter services throughout North Carolina. PlatinumSitters vets all of its child-care providers by running background checks, checking references and conducting interviews.
Blush’s day-care services will be available for children aged six months to 12 years.
And while child care is located on site, Rogers said, don’t expect children to be creating distractions.
“It is in the same building, but it is a separate entrance,” Rogers said. “Parents can feel their child is close, but they won’t come in their space. There aren’t children running around.”
Blush is billing itself as the first female-focused coworking space in the Triangle. However, another coworking company focused on women, called Vibe, previously operated in Cary, though it did not provide child care.
Vibe closed when Cary Towne Center was bought by Epic Games last year. Epic plans to redevelop the mall into its headquarters.
Rogers believes there will be a lot of demand for a female-focused space in the Triangle.
“Just having the ability to have your voice be heard, or collaborate with other women, whether in your industry or outside is important,” she said. “There’s a need for a place where women feel totally respected and supported. I personally have found that to be a challenge in some of the places that I have worked. ”
At capacity, Blush could hold around 200 workers, according to Rogers. Monthly memberships will start at $250, though day passes can be had for $45. Child care is $10 per hour.
Rogers said she believes Blush is launching at a fortuitous time. Many workers are still interested in working remotely, but are missing the chance to work in an office setting. And with COVID-19 cases beginning to drop again, she believes that interest will only increase.
“People are starting to venture out,” she said. “I know a lot of people like to work from home, but I am not one of those people. I am a collaborative person. I want to talk to people and meet with people.”
Rogers is making the bet there will be plenty of people just like her.

Child Care FAQ
Child care providers can create detailed profiles, search and apply to jobs, message with families, and book interviews for free on Sittercity. Providers have the option to pay for background checks to run on themselves to stand out to families. However, families can also offer to pay for background checks on providers as well.
According to the latest Sittercity data, nannies in the US typically charge $19.00 an hour and babysitters $17.50 an hour. But your hourly rate can vary significantly depending on the cost of living in your area, the duties and responsibilities in the job description, and your state’s minimum wage laws. There’s no perfect calculator to determine your rate, but it’s important to factor in everything you have to offer a family.
There are a lot of risk factors with getting paid “off the books,” but there are also a lot of benefits to getting paid “on the books.” Those benefits include verifiable income, a legal employment history, unemployment benefits, social security and medicare benefits, and worker’s compensation.
A nanny is a child care provider who has a regular work schedule with a family. There is a wide range of possibilities in the specifics of a nanny position and career. You could work part-time or full-time, live-in or out, temporary or ongoing for an extended amount of time. You could be an au pair, overnight nanny, or newborn care specialist. You could provide care through before-school or after-school activities or you could be a travel nanny.
A babysitter is a child care provider who doesn’t have a regular work schedule with a family. There is a wide range of possibilities in the specifics of a babysitter position and career. Because your work with each family is part-time, you can work with multiple families at the same time. You could provide care through before-school or after-school activities or for nights or weekends when the family needs care.
Depending on the job responsibilities and schedules negotiated with the family, child care providers could work at any time. This includes in the morning, afternoon, evening, or at night. And on weekdays or on the weekend.
On Sittercity, child care providers can browse jobs based on their zip code. They can craft their online resume by creating a detailed profile. They can apply to jobs, message with interested parents, and schedule interviews. Many providers will also negotiate a contract with families to make sure the details of the job are clear on both sides.
There are a lot of fun things that child care providers do with kids. Both indoor and outdoor activities, including arts and crafts projects, baking, sports, and field trips.
There are a few ways that both nannies and babysitters can make some extra income.
