Description
POLLIS CHILA who decided to pass the century in the vast expanses of Russia. The institution is located in the center of Vladimir, so the gastronomic adventure will be a pleasant addition to the excursion route through ancient temples and monasteries. Scandinavian minimalism forms the basis of the interior, which contrasts with the urban landscapes. Take a look at the restaurant if the receptors need new sensations.
The main menu of the establishment is a guide to European cuisine, seasoned with the vision of the culinary author. Our blooming kindergarten
Home / Our blooming kindergarten
The territory of the preschool institution is its original calling card. Any visitor, having stepped on the site of the preschool educational institution, pays attention to its grooming. If your eyes are pleased with multi-colored flower beds, clean paths, you will immediately understand that people live and work here, for whom a kindergarten is not just a place of work, but a home that you want to make cozy and comfortable.
In 2019-2020 academic year year, a project was implemented to improve and plant greenery on the territory of a preschool educational institution, and at the end of the project, the participants decided to continue work in the 2020-2021 academic year, and to implement a new project on the improvement and gardening of the territory of a preschool educational institution “Our blooming kindergarten “.
Choosing the idea of our project, we decided that the improvement and landscaping of the territory of the preschool educational institution is the most relevant socially significant topic for our preschool institution. Having implemented the project, we will be able to please not only ourselves, but also those around us with the result of our work, since in our area of Kaptain Orlikova Street, there are very few beautiful, flowering courtyards where small children could play and admire the beauty of nature. We believe that the creation of beauty around you should start from early childhood.
Another reason why we wanted to transform our territory is to educate children in a respectful and caring attitude towards nature and work.
The main idea of our project was the desire to change the already established environment of the territory of the kindergarten, increase its attractiveness, create its own individual image, create aesthetically educative conditions for educational activities, and of course, instill in children a respectful and careful attitude to nature, to work.
Tasks:
Turn kindergarten plots into a territory of beauty, fairy tales, kindness through the creation of an individual image of the territory
Equip the territory of the preschool educational institution with the requirements and guidelines for conducting recreational work with children.
Involve teachers, parents, children in the work process, identify business partners.
To develop respect for nature and the environment.
To increase satisfaction with the activities of a preschool institution on the part of parents and pupils.
To form an ecological culture of preschoolers.
During the implementation of the project on the territory of the preschool institution were planted:
The project “Our Blooming Kindergarten” is not the final result of the aesthetic design of the territory of the kindergarten. The project is dynamic, so the spatial environment will be constantly updated with new ideas and original solutions.

Our blossoming kindergarten | Vestochka
Any kindergarten can envy the vast territory of our Vestochka. And it was the large space that made it possible to turn our kindergarten into a real green kingdom. A wide variety of trees and shrubs in our garden can only be compared with a botanical garden. But once the territory of the kindergarten was a wasteland with an area of 5000 sq.m., on which only the building of the kindergarten and verandas for walking were located. And so the caring hands of the employees of kindergarten No. 425 even then began work on shaping the landscape and landscaping the entire territory.
And now our kindergarten is a green paradise. Any person who has ever visited Vestochka immediately pays attention to the alley located at the entrance to the kindergarten. Ate with their soft and lush paws welcome every visitor. And how gently and affectionately the willow sways in the wind, bending its thin branches low, as if singing lullabies to our pupils.
In the middle of summer, the territory of the kindergarten is filled with the delightful honey aroma of blooming linden. And how pleasing to the eye are firs, blue spruces, white-trunked birches. Larch trees are very beautiful in spring, when they have pale green needles. And mountain ash is beautiful closer to autumn, when the branches bend closer to the ground under the weight of bright orange berries.
And how delightfully fruit trees bloom! Delicate white-pink color of apple and cherry trees, the aroma, inhaling which you feel, rejoice and live … And how beautifully their petals fall, covering the ground with a light white carpet! The color of acacia, mountain ash, viburnum, spirea decorate the site very much in spring and summer.
And all these trees and shrubs are not only pleasing to the eye, but also bring great benefits to all residents of Vestochka. In summer, trees protect children from the bright sun and give a saving shade during the heat, in autumn we harvest from apple and pear trees, and in winter, the children happily hang bird feeders on the branches.
Moreover, our kindergarten has replenished its “green” collection with seedlings of new rare trees and shrubs, such as white willow spherical dwarf, Japanese volcanic willow, Betula birch, lilac “Galina Ulanova”, “Lila Wonder”, “ Prime Rose. And last year, our graduates planted Red maple seedlings as a keepsake for the kindergarten. These trees are still very young, but thanks to the caring care of our employees, they will become big, strong and beautiful! And the most obvious proof of this is thuja and chestnut, planted several years ago. After all, it was thanks to proper care that these plants grew and grew stronger in unusual climatic conditions.
The fund of our “botanical garden” is updated annually. And our pupils can boast of knowing not only all the plants familiar to our eyes, but also trees and shrubs that cannot be seen on the streets of our city.
Vestochka’s guests – fans and experts in botany – often come to admire our mighty aspens, the incredible color of Red maple leaves, and biology students have come to us more than once for horse chestnut seeds.
The kindergarten has ornamental flowering and grassy lawns where children can play, watch insects and various grasses. A grassy lawn pleases us with juicy dense greenery thanks to proper, constant care: weed removal, timely mowing, watering in the evening or early morning.
Creating decorative variegated flower beds and lawns, we take into account the different periods of flowering of perennial plants and lawn grasses. As soon as the spring sun warms the earth, the time of flowering of tulips, daffodils and irises begins. And it seems that green grass has not yet appeared everywhere, and their flowering buds are already delighting with a riot of colors and shapes.
And soon the flowers of ageratum and petunia, lobelia bloom their petals. In the middle of summer, our garden is filled with the unsurpassed scent of peonies and roses. Each flower is fragrant and breathes brightness, life! Daisies with pale purple petals and a honey center round like the sun, classic daisies in dazzling white corollas, petunia and begonia, phlox and viola … And how beautiful, colorful and bright dahlias and gladioluses, asters, chrysanthemums bloom in August and September and phloxes. Cineraria and hostas add silvery and bright green color to this variegated “bouquet”.
And somewhere near the entrance there is a wonderful Japanese garden where you can retire, be in harmony with yourself and with nature. The Japanese landscape garden is characterized by simplicity and the use of only four elements: stones, water, trees and flowers. The stone represents strength and desire. Therefore, the path to the garden is paved with stones. The small pond is also surrounded by rocks. Water – symbolizes the passage of time, it calms and gives strength. And the contemplation of beautiful flowers (daylilies, hostas, viola) and shrubs (feverfew, horse chestnut, bird cherry, snowberry) gives the eyes and soul the necessary peace and rest.
After passing through the bridge, you can get directly from the Japanese garden into a cute village courtyard. Here you can relax on a bench and admire the beautiful flowers and surroundings of village life.
And Vestochka’s favorite place, of course, is the vegetable garden. Various vegetable crops grow in the garden: lettuce, radishes, onions, peas, beans, zucchini, white cabbage, beets, carrots, and tomatoes. There is also a bed of Dr. Aibolit, on which medicinal plants grow (mint, chamomile, lemon balm). In the spring, children watch how adults dig up beds, fertilize them, i. e. they prepare the garden for planting, and in the summer the children are directly involved in caring for the garden: weed the beds, loosen the ground, and water it. Beds are assigned to each age group.
The children proudly talk about what they grow in the garden, how they take care of them and are already dreaming about what a rich harvest they will harvest in the fall. And in our garden there is a memo with the rules that every resident of Vestochka is obliged to follow.
On the mini-field, the children of the older groups, together with the teacher, sow seeds of different crops: wheat, rye and buckwheat. There is also a potato field. In the process of growth, seedlings are compared, the stages of their growth are noted. Thus, work in the field develops children’s observation skills, the ability to compare, analyze and draw conclusions. The harvested crop also has a practical application: birds feast on grains, which are many in the territory of the kindergarten, children decorate the hall and the group with spikelets for the Autumn holiday.

Early Childhood Programs
The Shaker Heights City School District offers high-quality early childhood programming intended to meet the needs of our community.
Shaker’s early childhood programs are the only programs in the state of Ohio to incorporate the prestigious International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme philosophy with continuation in K-12. We have expanded our offerings to positively impact achievement and to better align with the District’s Educational Equity Policy.
Our goals in developing The Shaker Heights Schools Early Childhood Program are to expand instructional options available to students, to create more flexibility for entry age into our program and to align the Early Childhood Program with practices in our K-12 classrooms. For example, all classes will include both students who have been identified to have disabilities and those who have not been so identified. In addition, all of our preschool classrooms will continue to be located at Onaway, in order to facilitate collaboration and sharing of resources and staff.
The Early Childhood Program is looking for Peer Models for the 2023-2024 school year. With a commitment to provide an inclusionary educational setting for our students with special needs, the practice of including “peer models” in our preschool classrooms is used and recommended by the Ohio Department of Education. Peer models provide an excellent learning example for our students with special needs, and also benefit from a rich developmentally appropriate preschool exprerience with exposure to children with differences.
The criteria for acceptance as a peer model are the following:
Children between the ages of 3 and 5 (must be 3 by September 30, 2023)
Children must be toilet trained
Children must live within the Shaker Heights City School District attendance zone
Children must be willing and able to serve as peer models
Children must demonstrate behavior within the typical range
Children must have strong communication and social skills
If you believe that your child meets the above criteria, the next step is to have your child screened by our Early Childhood Program staff. To apply to be screened, please complete the application here. Please note, this is a request to be screened, not a guarantee of enrollment. The application for screening will close on March 10, 2023, at 5 p.m.
Once your application is submitted, you will be contacted to schedule a 1-2 hour in-house peer model screening, which will take place on March 17 at Onaway Elementary School from 9:45-11:15 a.m. and 12:30-2:00 p.m. This will provide the preschool team the opportunity to observe specific developmental skills that are essential to our program.
All information provided in the application is confidential and will only be used to help the preschool team get to know you and your child prior to the screening.

Nice Start, But The ‘Time’ Begins To Drag
This is, as the title indicates, a history of how mankind developed different ways to measure time, beginning with sundials, all the way to the most modern methods which was the mid 20th century, when this British animated short was produced.
The sun dial simply kept track of where the sun was in the sky and helped break down the day into measurements. Then, other elements were used to make this more accurate, give us wrist watches, etc. It is stated in the introduction that “this film is a symbolic story of man’s progress in time measurement.” It’s educational more than entertaining but it gets a little too symbolic and begins to drag from the halfway point on, and winds up just plain boring. This was nominated for an Oscar for best one-reel short subject but I don’t think you’ll be entertained with it.

🪐 “The Shortest History of Time” in 30 minutes. Summary of Hawking’s book
The bestseller A Brief History of Time (1988) was written by Hawking after a tracheotomy. By that time, the scientist was almost completely paralyzed, and the speech synthesizer became his only connection with the world. Choosing letters and words with his eyes, Stephen Hawking dictated a book that instantly became a world bestseller. At the request of readers, the “Brief History” was followed by “The Shortest” (2005), co-authored with Leonard Mlodinov, together with him the “Higher Plan” was published in 2010, summing up the development of the scientific picture over the past quarter century. nine0003
Stephen Hawking – a man sentenced to early death by ALS, and even before death – to isolation (in the 1960s, when the diagnosis was made, there were no computer communicators). He managed to live a full life and make significant discoveries, became an intermediary between an increasingly complex science and a wide, unprepared readership. Significant discoveries are associated with the name of Hawking – primarily in the study of black holes, time and the theory of the Big Bang. He took a prominent part in the efforts to create the Theory of Everything, the development of ideas about the Universe and time, but still his main merit is understandability. Thanks to Hawking, every reader can penetrate the secrets of the universe, or at least enjoy such an illusion. nine0003
His picture of the universe is created entirely in his head, without experiments and calculations. Science here borders on art, on self-expression, which fits well into the modern trend of science itself, and there can be many pictures (more precisely, “stories”) of the world. The humanitarian component returned to physics: man again became the measure of all things. But only on condition that he understands the limitations and relativity of his measure – and even the unconditional reality of “things”.
For a hundred years man’s place in the universe has changed beyond recognition. It was not easy for the 17th century to come to terms with the subordinate position of the Earth in relation to the Sun, and for the next centuries to accept the periphery of the entire solar system and even the Milky Way galaxy, to realize themselves as a speck of dust in the Universe. But now much more is required of us – to realize that much in this Universe is inaccessible to our perception, from the movement of particles to hypothetical 11 dimensions. And allow the existence of other universes, with other laws, where our presence is obviously impossible. nine0003
At this point of complete insignificance of man in front of an infinite number of unpredictable universes, an amazing turn takes place: in our universe, man exists, which means that from all possible sets of laws and histories, we have to choose those that allow our existence. This is deceptively similar to the teleological explanations of the Middle Ages: God creates and directs the world to the appearance of man. However, Hawking does not assume such a goal (the highest plan may not have a “highest planner”), the appearance of a person can be the result of many random coincidences, but it allows us, by turning history back, to trace it back to the initial (boundary) conditions, up to the beginning (if it exists). nine0011
Science understands the law of nature as a rule deduced from regular observations and allowing predictions to be made. If the forecast is refuted, then the law is also revised. Laws establish a quantitative relationship between phenomena and are usually written in mathematical formulas. The scientific picture of the world is an interconnected system of laws. Basic “philosophical” questions of science:
1) Is there a source of laws? (God?) 2) Are there exceptions to laws? nine0011 3) Is there only one set of laws?
The first two questions are interrelated, but not interdependent: the existence of God is possible without miracles (Newton’s God is a watchmaker who twists the mechanism of the universe).
Science begins with observations of regularities and attempts to establish natural laws: from the moment people discovered the cyclical nature of lunar eclipses and stopped explaining them as whims of the gods, we speak of the birth of science.
The question of laws is closely related to the question of where this world came from. From the VI century BC. e. the Greeks assumed the origin of the world from some primary element – water, air, ether. From these assumptions, Democritus’ brilliant conjecture about atoms develops as a result. nine0003
Actually, the Greeks discovered few laws of physics. The physical law is based on the results of observations and establishes a constant connection of phenomena . These are the Pythagorean theory of the relationship between the length of the string and the pitch of the sound and the three laws of Archimedes – the rule of the lever, the law of buoyancy and the equality of the angle of incidence and the angle of reflection. Basically, the Greeks were not interested in “how”, but “why”: not owning the scientific method and not attaching value to the experiment, they were looking not for general laws, but for speculative principles. nine0003
Aristotle, who built physics on intellectual and even aesthetic principles, had a powerful influence on the development of European science: the Prime Mover was the beginning in his concept, the luminaries moved in circular orbits, bodies “preferred” a state of rest, and if they fell to the Earth, then at a constant speed. Since this was contrary to observation, Aristotle explained the acceleration in approaching the Earth as “jubilation”. Feelings and reason were attributed to objects even much later: even in the 17th century, Kepler claimed that the planets consciously fulfill the laws of motion prescribed by them. nine0003
On the basis of geometric calculations, Aristarchus (3rd century BC) established that the Sun is much larger than the Earth, and therefore assumed that the Earth revolves around the Sun. He also considered the stars to be distant suns. This theory was returned only in the 17th century: Kepler, Copernicus and Galileo, as a result of observations, laid the foundations of scientific physics and astronomy. Galileo conducted experiments with falling objects and saw the task of science in establishing quantitative relationships between phenomena. The concept of “Law” was formulated in the same 17th century by Descartes, Newton’s predecessor: he explained all phenomena from the movement of objects with a certain mass. nine0014 The law, according to Descartes, is executed always and everywhere. Descartes also raised the question of “initial conditions”: in order to determine the development of a system, one must know not only the laws, but also the initial state.
The classical picture of the world takes its final form in Newton’s three laws:

Bankers’ salaries showed the slightest decline in the economic downturn in the past 12 months, according to senior recruiters for financial companies in London. As for the size of bonuses for the highest paid managers, Switzerland has surpassed the UK in terms of their size.
A survey of wages and bonuses in the financial sector conducted by research company Napier Scott showed that in 2009In 2018, employees of the private banking industry lost the least in earnings, while the earnings of quantitative financiers and analysts decreased the most, sometimes up to 77%.
Recruitment firm Morgan McKinley, which specializes in recruiting for banks and the financial services sector, says that many banking companies have been trying to keep their private bankers’ salaries attractive this year. “As a result, in order to attract such a specialist to work in a new company, it must offer a competitive base salary,” Joe Stone from the asset management division of Morgan McKinley said in an interview with WealthBriefing. – The structure of bonus payments is currently being reviewed by many banks and in the future their size will most likely depend on the achievement of longer-term profit targets. The same thing is happening now with bonus systems for investment bankers.” nine0003
Morgan McKinley’s latest labor market monitoring data showed that in March 2009 the average salary in the City increased by 5% compared to the same month a year earlier and reached 52,122 pounds sterling (slightly more than 80.7 thousand dollars). By March, the growth was 3%.
Napier Scott’s private banking remuneration study shows that in the UK, among first tier companies, account manager salaries range from an average of £180,000 for managing director level employees with experience in this field for over 12 years, up to 50 thousand pounds for a partner with 3-5 years of experience. The amount of paid bonuses is made respectively from 29£0,000 for managing directors up to £45,000 for a partner.
While the salaries of managing directors in Switzerland are comparable to those of their British counterparts, their bonuses far exceed those of the British, averaging £485,000. However, lower-ranking employees at Swiss private banks are paid less than in the UK, with an average partner’s base salary of £40,000 and bonuses of £35,000.
Dubai at the top
Managing directors in the Middle East in Dubai-based international bank offices receive the world’s highest base salary of £200,000 with a bonus of £255,000. While partners at local banks earn £50,000 in base salary, their bonuses also hold a world record of £75,000. Russian managing directors in Moscow receive £180,000 base salary and £290,000 in bonuses, while partners are paid £44,000 with a £30,000 bonus. nine0003
While a number of wealth management companies are still on a moratorium on staffing, experienced private bankers with extensive personal contacts are still in demand today because they can start making money for their firm from day one. Although today there is a slight oversupply of top managers in the private banking sector, the supply of highly qualified specialists in this segment in the UK, and indeed worldwide, is still relatively low. The latter is explained by the fact that private bankers in the current market conditions are not too willing to change their companies. The limiting factor here is both the fear of losing a job and the reluctance to accept some reduction in potential income in the short term, since in this case they will have to rebuild their client base in a new place. nine0003
“There aren’t too many job openings in this segment of the labor market today, but it has a lot of potential,” says Dudley Edmunds, co-owner of wealth management agency Culliford Edmunds Associates. “The amounts of payments to these specialists have remained approximately at the same level over the past 12 months, although during this time there were one or two banks on the market that did not fit into this trend.”
However, higher payouts and a wider range of products that can better meet customer needs remain key factors in the competitiveness of private banking players. The credit crunch has forced more and more private bankers to take a closer look at firms that were previously considered “unfashionable” but were less affected by the crisis. nine0003
“These include smaller Swiss banks that suffered relatively little losses due to the collapse in the structured financial sector and the credit crunch. No banker today would take the risk of taking his own clients to a bank that has been hit hard by the financial crisis. Right now there is a reassessment of values, ”comments one banker on condition of anonymity.
“Private bankers, who already have a wide network of partners, are now more likely to work with smaller local players with an impeccable reputation than with large international banks,” says Morgan McKinley’s Joe Stone. nine0003
Change profile
At the beginning of last year, persistent rumors circulated in the market that a huge number of frightened investment bankers intended to retrain as private bankers. However, in private banking & wealth management companies, all these investment bankers, who suddenly discover in themselves an indomitable desire to become a private banker, are most often viewed with skepticism. Dudley Edmunds notes that it is generally well understood in private banks that big investment bankers can only make such a transition for a short time to sit out the difficult times that the investment banking industry is going through today. “Once the investment banking business picks up again, these people will go there again in search of higher incomes, leaving wealth management companies with gaping voids,” he has no doubt. “There have been a few recent cases where high-profile investment bankers have been approached to work for a private bank, but these have been the exception rather than the rule. ” nine0003
One recruiter who asked not to be identified in print claims that he has had three or four cases where investment bankers went private during a recession. But they did this only in order to return to the investment bank again a couple of years later, when the market recovery resumed. This recruiter wonders why companies are willing to pay £250,000-400,000 to a private banker they don’t know at work when it’s cheaper to hire a private banker who could possibly bring in clients with £100m worth of assets in a year . However, he acknowledges that in smaller markets such as Russia, Turkey, Greece and some Scandinavian countries, the transition from investment banking to private banking could be successful. nine0003
Demand for different specializations of private bankers is not homogeneous, and in certain regions and areas there is a particularly high need for specialists with specific skills and experience. “Some banks create niche teams that specialize in areas such as, say, lending or emerging markets. So private bankers with the appropriate qualifications and knowledge are in great demand today,” says Stone. “There is a very high demand for private bankers with their own base of UK resident clients subject to UK and non-UK taxation, as well as professionals with similar bases across Latin America, Spain and developing countries.” nine0003
Other recruiters are seeing a growing interest in NRI (Non Resident Indian) bankers. Thirdly, an increase in demand for Middle Eastern private bankers, explaining it by the fact that a number of local large banks are ending contracts with bankers signed about three years ago, and they are now preparing to change employers. While demand for private bankers in the UK has declined overall, there are still vacancies in the growing segment of intermediary sales, as well as for bankers who specialize exclusively in the resident market, subject to tax in foreign jurisdictions. However, after some wealthy Russians lost up to 80-90% of their fortunes, the demand for bankers specializing in this market segment has declined significantly.
One of the increasingly important requirements for private bankers when applying for a job is that they have their own client base, without which it is very difficult, although not impossible, to enter this market. Work experience remains a key criterion for hiring companies, which today seek to hire exclusively professionals who bring money and assets from their clients, rather than pure account managers. “Similarly, in the current market conditions, companies are only really interested in private bankers who are able to bring with them a list of contacts appropriate to the level and scale of the company they would like to join, and thus begin to turn a profit from the very first day,” says Stone. nine0003
However, companies that offer potential employees an attractive compensation package and working conditions are good opportunities to get quality specialists. “A wealth management company that is able to think big, bold and out of the box has every chance of attracting truly extraordinary people to work,” adds Edmunds.
Banker’s salary: fix is only half of income
“So that I can live on one salary?!” nine0015
“Three to five years ago, people applying for the positions of top managers in banks were happy if they were offered a more or less decent salary,” the head of one of the “medium” Moscow banks tells BO. – No one even stuttered about other motivation schemes: what kind of corporate pension plans, social packages, credit benefits or housing payments! As stated in the then commercial – not in this life. The market was dominated by the principle: take what they give and say thank you for taking you. nine0003
First of all, they gave a fix – a rigidly stipulated annual salary, the amount of which, as the bankers themselves admit, very rarely depended on the performance of a particular person or on the performance of the bank as a whole. Candidates for the positions of top managers spoke about bonuses and bonuses extremely rarely and only in those cases when they received an unambiguous “signal” that the employer was ready to discuss this topic. However, we repeat, this rarely happened: the market was so “narrow” and killed by the crisis that employees could only agree to the conditions offered to them. No one in another bank with a bag of money and with a bonus program painted over the years was waiting for them. nine0003
However, happiness turned out to be possible in this life, and Russian financial top managers quickly forgot how to say “thank you” just for being hired. At least, this is the trend of the last two years, Oksana Fomicheva, a specialist at the Flex recruiting agency, believes. In her opinion, today it can be stated that the “stars” of the banking market are strongly “overbought”. “The answer to why this is happening is obvious: the banking market is growing, the stock market is also growing, the profits of companies operating in the financial sector of the economy are huge, and employers have the opportunity to raise salaries in order to attract highly qualified employees with well-known names, work experience and clientele. a base that will allow the company to make a qualitative breakthrough,” the expert explains. nine0003
Vitaly Drofa, Deputy Director of the Human Resources Department of Promsvyazbank, agrees with her. “The labor market in this sector is currently experiencing another period of increased activity associated with the overall dynamics of the development of the financial sector of the economy of our country. Given this, I can argue that the owners and top officials of banks may not hear the numbers that they expect to hear from candidates considered as replacements for departed managers, ”explains the expert. The representative of Promsvyazbank, however, adds that the figures of desired income given by applicants can be both an order of magnitude higher and an order of magnitude lower. But, as the bankers admit, the latter has now become a real exception to the rule, while the former has become a common practice. nine0003
The matter is not limited to salary and bonus requirements. Representatives of recruiting companies complain that top managers, along with well-founded demands (that the contract should provide for social guarantees, a “ladder of success” has been built, in which the payment of bonuses is clearly “tied” to the performance of specific tasks), they began to put forward such demands that are otherwise like whims hard to name. For example, in headhunting companies, they tell a story about a top manager who turned down a lucrative offer only because he was offered a corporate car of a lower class than he had at the time of the start of negotiations as one of the benefits. nine0003
“Of course, this is an exaggeration – it is clear that the person almost certainly had other reasons for refusal, and the declared dissatisfaction with the brand of the car was the reason, and not the main factor that played a role in making the decision,” says Oksana Fomicheva (Flex). But this story is very indicative: the faster the market develops and the more successful the banking activity in Russia becomes, the more “capricious” top managers are, insisting not only on a huge annual fixed salary, but also on a bonus program, and on providing them with guarantees in case buying a bank or restructuring it, and developing individual loan and pension programs, and even providing benefits for family members. Unless, of course, there are such, which is far from always a fact: the Russian banking market is characterized by a unique (at least from the point of view of Europe and the United States) youth of top managers. Their average age today does not exceed 35-40 years, while in the US it ranges from 45 to 50 years. And in more conservative Europe, they prefer to have older people as bank managers – those who are over 50.
Let’s return, however, to fix. This part of the annual income of top managers, of course, has not been canceled, and in the contracts that are concluded between employers and the purchased “stars” of the banking market, the amount of salary is clearly stipulated. However, now, as Karina Cohen, head of the financial department of the Kontakt agency, explains, the share of fix in the total income of a top manager of a Russian bank does not exceed 50%, and often amounts to 40%. “There is no situation in which the fix sizes exceed the bonus sizes,” the expert explains. At the same time, according to analysts, as the market develops, the ratio between a fixed salary and additional payments in the form of bonuses and bonuses will change in favor of the latter. Just in order to motivate the top manager, and at the same time “tie” him to the bank more firmly: after all, if he leaves before the expiration of the contract, he risks losing bonuses. Especially if the schedule of their payments is built in such a way that most of it is paid three to four years after the person starts working in a particular financial structure. nine0003
“Handcuffs”, “parachute”, “boot”, options and pension – everything for them. Is it any wonder that recently the word “gold” appears in the name of motivational schemes more and more often – “golden parachute”, “golden shoe”, “golden handcuffs” and even “golden handshake”, which in many respects is similar to “ golden parachute. However, as Anastasia Konyaeva, head of the client relations department of the non-state pension fund ING, explains, all these concepts came to the Russian labor market from countries with developed economies, where they try to “tie” top managers to the company seriously and for a long time. “In our country, even now, contacts with highly paid employees are often short-term, and only recently this trend has begun to reverse,” the expert says. nine0003
In fact, all this “gold” is nothing more than agreements reached in advance between top managers and shareholders of banks in case something goes wrong. For example, a person will not justify the hopes placed on him or will be forced to leave for health reasons, or his position in the structure will worsen as a result of its takeover or business reorganization. As experts explain, a “brand” top manager will no longer go to work in a large Western bank if he does not agree in advance on the possibility of using the “golden parachute”, “golden shoe”, etc. Well, of course, if he is not sure that he is satisfied with the “golden handcuffs” that the company will certainly try to put on him. nine0003
“Golden handcuffs”, according to analysts, is one of the most common forms of motivation for the work of top managers in Western banks today. Its essence lies in the fact that for a person they develop such a compensation package that makes his departure from the company extremely economically unprofitable. For example, as Madeleine Baturina, senior consultant of the consulting department of the audit and consulting group Business Systems Development, explains, a program of deferred bonus payments can be built: in this case, the manager receives bonuses only after a certain period, for example, three to four years after the start work. At the same time, they are transferred in tranches every year, but a person cannot withdraw this money from the account and use it at his own discretion. If he quits ahead of time, he will not receive this amount. “This is exactly what is called “golden handcuffs” – the company thus binds a top manager to itself, and it can be very difficult for him to leave it, even if he understands that he has fewer opportunities for professional or career growth here than in another bank,” says the expert. nine0003
The Golden Shoe is usually used when a company wants to part ways with a manager, for example, because he did not achieve the expected results, quarreled with shareholders, or simply the bank’s management wanted to inject “fresh blood” into the business. Everything would be fine, but only the entry into the market of an offended ex-top manager often turns into significant image costs for the company. To avoid them, as Anastasia Konyaeva (NPF ING) explains, a person is actually offered huge “compensation”. The “golden parachute” also provides for something similar: they also want to part with a person, but not because he did not justify the trust, but because he has reached retirement age or can no longer work for health reasons. Then the compensation package comes into play again. “And we increasingly see a situation in the market when such incentive schemes and some kind of guarantees begin to be developed from the very beginning of a person’s work in a company. This is economically more profitable, because such packages are formed gradually, one-time huge payments to the outgoing manager can negatively affect the financial position of the company, ”explains Anastasia Konyaeva. And here, according to the expert, it is necessary to take into account that foreign banks in their reporting prescribe the costs of maintaining their top managers as a separate line, starting with the size of the bonuses that are paid to them, and ending with compensation payments in case of their departure. nine0003
In addition to the handcuffs, the parachute and the boot, the motivational “package” of Western banks also includes such a tool as options – providing a top manager with the opportunity to directly participate in the business of his bank by owning shares. In the US and Europe, the share of income from options in the total income “portfolio” of top managers is from 10 to 40%, depending on the size of the package, the current market situation and the “profile” of a particular company. In the Russian banking market, the situation is still different: here the option scheme of motivation is only taking its first steps. In January 2005, 10 top managers of Rosbank became the owners of its shares in the amount of 1.18% of its capital. If the shares were traded on the stock exchange, then the value of the package transferred to top managers at that time could have amounted to more than $14 million. Meanwhile, it was rumored in the market that the shares went to the tops for only 10% of their real value. nine0003
In May 2005, Zenit Bank announced that it had developed an option program to encourage top managers, under which about 7% of the shares of the financial and credit structure were transferred to high-ranking employees of the bank. According to the bank, the incentive program for managers was developed back in 2000. It provides for the transfer of shares to managers if they can attract a foreign investor to the capital. And as soon as he appeared in the person of Urals Energy, the managers became co-owners of Zenit. Strictly speaking, the matter is limited to this today: in most private banks there is not even a hint of the development of option programs for top managers. Several leaders of the banking business, including the MDM financial group, say that this is possible, but have not yet specified when, in what volumes and for how many of their top managers. nine0003
“Several factors come into play here. Firstly, our “tops” do not have a culture of participation in such motivational programs, and this is not surprising – after all, the stock market remains unstable and opaque, and there are basically no banking shares on it, with the exception of Sberbank securities, – says Madeleine Baturina ( “Development of business systems”). “Therefore, they prefer to receive fixes and / or bonuses, that is, such motivations that are clear to them, understandable and already well known. ” The second problem, according to the analyst, is the difficulty in transferring property rights – the legislation that regulates these issues has not yet been sufficiently developed. As a result, options as a form of rewarding highly paid banking “specialists” remain with us a matter of the future, sums up Madeleine Baturina. nine0003
For the time being, individual pension plans, as a way of rewarding top managers, apparently remain a matter of the future for Russia. As Anastasia Konyaeva (NPF ING) explains, for banks operating in countries with developed economies, the preparation of such plans for top managers is as much an integral part of the corporate culture as the implementation of bonus programs.
Top-manager to top-manager – strife
In principle, tops in banks are employees who have the maximum impact on the development of his business. The standard list includes the chairman of the board, his deputies, the president, vice presidents, as well as heads of the bank’s leading areas, which may or may not be in the rank of vice president or deputy chairman of the board. However, even with this reservation, this list is very conditional: in foreign banks, for example, people with the status of vice president are far from always considered tops and are paid accordingly. And in Russia, people with very modest official job titles can be included in the number of the elected. But the general trend so far is as follows: in large Russian banks, there are usually from 20 to 40 top managers, in foreign banks – from 5 to 10.
It may be misleading that vice presidents and/or vice chairmen of the boards of investment, corporate and retail banks are paid about the same. Of course, provided that banks have approximately the same volume of business, and in various ratings they occupy close positions in terms of capital, liquid assets, etc. However, as experts explain, in reality everything is not at all like this: among the “tops” there is a white bone, a middle and a lower link. And which group this or that manager belongs to depends directly on which bank he works in and what direction he supervises in it. nine0003
The most highly paid part of the banking top management are the “stars” responsible for investment banking. Their annual income, as Karina Cohen (Contact) explains, can reach two, three, and even five million dollars. Such managers have to solve very difficult problems. Their level of responsibility is by definition higher due to the fact that they run a business with a high level of risk. In addition, such top managers are usually the backbone of an entire investment team, on the successful work of which most of the bank’s income directly depends. nine0003
Top-managers employed in corporate banking — work with legal entities — are on the second level in terms of income. They, according to experts from recruiting agencies, are paid worse than “investors”, but, nevertheless, also very high: the annual income of top managers here reaches $ 1 million.
“Such a high income is due to the fact that success in our banks depends more on the individual than on the technological base. As a result, with the departure of one top manager in charge of corporate banking, the financial result of the bank as a whole very often changes,” says Karina Cohen. In addition, top managers of this level usually have well-established ties with large corporate clients, have their own client base, the loss of which for the bank can result in not only a reduction in income, but also losses. Especially in those cases when a top manager goes straight to competitors. It is worth noting that this is most often the case: experts from recruiting agencies say that you can literally count on one hand the cases when people agreed to change their profile and master the investment direction instead of the usual corporate banking. Therefore, employers prefer to obviously overpay such a person, so long as he does not leave them and does not take with him experience, knowledge, and clientele to competitors. nine0003
The third and lowest paid category of banking top managers: professionals employed in the retail business. Their income, as it became known to “BO”, rarely exceeds 500 thousand dollars. The exception is people who work in key positions in “purely” retail banks or are responsible for the development of the retail direction as such in universal banks. However, as experts emphasize, even in this case, the order of figures is 600-750 thousand dollars, but does not reach or even come close to one million dollars, which is quite possible in both investment and corporate banking. The reason here is that the retail business – fair or not – is considered the easiest. In any case, now, when this direction is experiencing a period of rapid growth, and the client, as they say, “pecks” himself. Over time, as observers say, the situation will certainly change: retail top managers will have to be responsible for the development and implementation of risk management systems, their level of responsibility will increase, and remuneration for work will also increase. However, for now, this is only a bright future. nine0003
“Gos”, “ours” and “not ours”
However, fixing the “average temperature” in the top managerial labor market is possible only with certain reservations. For example, with such: in foreign “daughters”, Russian commercial financial and credit structures and state-owned banks, there are fundamentally different approaches to motivating the activities of their “stars”. First of all, because the concepts of building a banking business are fundamentally different, and hence the understanding of what place top managers occupy in a bank’s activities and what role they play in business processes. nine0003
“In foreign companies, it is considered optional to develop any special forms to motivate top managers: it is believed that they are already very well paid and do not need additional motivation. But on the contrary, they are trying to keep middle managers and ordinary employees, and more and more often not due to a sharp increase in salaries, but by involving them in the company’s activities, ”says Madeleine Baturina (“Development of Business Systems”). This is a marketing approach: the staff is treated like an internal client, the expert explains. “For now, everything rests on top managers, hence the corresponding attitude towards them and to lower staff. Our banks need “stars” who could provide their structures with a qualitative breakthrough. The “Westerners” need employees who would be cogs in the overall system,” states Madeleine Baturina. nine0003
Other experts agree with the consultant of ACG “Business Systems Development”. According to Karina Cohen (“Contact”), middle managers live best in Western banks, they are obviously overpaid compared to similar personnel in the Russian market. “They are very loyal to their bank, in fact they are the backbone, and it is the very fact of its existence that makes it easy to change top managers. For Russian banks, this situation is not typical. Here, on the contrary, the middle and lower managerial levels are in the shadows, they receive very little attention, and our banking structures are based on the personality of the leader. When he leaves, the situation begins to develop, as in investment banking, and this is wrong – commercial and retail banks should be built on clear technologies and clear business processes,” emphasizes Karina Cohen. nine0003
Experts also note another point: in foreign banking subsidiaries, material motivation almost never comes first. The main motive for hiring a top manager is that you will not be in some unknown financial structure, but in a world-famous branded bank. You will get the opportunity to master such technologies that Russian banks can only dream of. “Foreign banks also put forward the possibility of training as a very strong motivational moment – they, unlike our banks, are really actively working on such programs and creating real conditions for improving the professionalism of their top managers. Much better than in Russian banks, they have developed both social motivation schemes and pension programs,” explains Oksana Fomicheva (Flex). “Material motivation — fix sizes, bonuses, bonuses — is almost in fourth or fifth place with them,” states Karina Cohen (“Contact”). And in the system of values of Russian banks, it still occupies an honorable first place, experts say. nine0003
As a result, a situation is emerging that at first glance may seem paradoxical: world-famous banks are coming to Russia, and Russian top managers are not too eager to work in them, preferring less technological, but more generous “their own”. However, as Karina Cohen emphasizes, money in this case is not everything. “A very important role is played by the fact that our top manager feels constrained in foreign subsidiaries: he is actually an intermediate link between the head office and the Russian middle and lower staff. Often, he does not have the opportunity to make independent decisions or develop products on his own – instead, he must implement solutions developed without his participation or with minimal participation of him, ”says the expert. It is clear that such a situation of young ambitious Russian “tops” does not always suit them. However, their Western colleagues – too. “An example of this is Michel Peririn, who recently moved from Raiffeisenbank to the MDM financial group,” says Madeleine Baturina (Development of Business Systems). “It is quite possible that he decided to take such a step because a Russian bank has a completely different level of drive, here it is possible to raise some project from scratch, without looking back at the head office in New York, London or Frankfurt.” And if we take into account that Russian large banks are now ready to overpay for a top manager they like, then the scales can easily tip in their favor. nine0003
However, in fairness, it should be said that foreign structures do not seek to hire Russian “specialists” for leadership positions either. They are quite satisfied with the situation in which “Baba Yaga is grown in his team”, for example, in large offices in countries with developed economies. Westerners are by no means ready to overpay Russian managers, who are often spoiled by high salaries and bonuses. Therefore, cases of hiring Russian “stars” in the management of large foreign banks are of a one-time nature. Nevertheless, our banks are clearly afraid of possible competition from the “daughters” who came to the country and therefore prefer to overpay their top managers, shackle them in “golden handcuffs” and tie them to themselves with social benefits or a separate office with a personal car. “At first glance, all this may seem like mere trifles, but in fact, it is the “car-office” factor that often plays an important role when a top manager decides where to work,” explains Oksana Fomicheva (Flex). “Top managers in Western banks, with rare exceptions, usually sit in the common room with other employees; they are not always assigned a personal banking machine.” Our “white bone” is accustomed to much more comfortable conditions, and now it still gets the opportunity to “knock out” more and more concessions from shareholders. Those are ready to provide them, just not to lose a good specialist with an efficient team, client base and experience in solving problems that are inevitable in banking. nine0003
It would seem that in such a situation, the main buyers of “our” and “not our” top managers should have been state-owned banks – Sberbank, Vneshtorgbank. However, experts from recruiting agencies say that the precedents of truly “brand specialists” coming here can be counted on one hand, although it is precisely in these banks that a synthesis of various motivational approaches typical of foreign and Russian banking structures is observed. Our “states” are closer to foreigners by the fact that they also focus on the brand: work at Sberbank or Vneshtorgbank, in their opinion, should be perceived by top managers as the highest happiness, a kind of recognition of their merits and professionalism, experts of recruiting agencies say. On the other hand, state banks are ready to pay their top managers well and provide them with social packages that seem unthinkable in other Russian banks. Their stability also belongs to the strong side of the “states”: a highly professional employee, having come here, can be sure that this is a job – for a long time. Of course, provided that he finds a common language with the shareholders. nine0003
However, this is where motivational factors end and demotivational factors begin. Sberbank does not honor either option or bonus incentive systems for top managers. At Vneshtorgbank, these systems are in their infancy: according to the head of VTB Andrey Kostin, today there is a system of bonuses for the top management of the bank, depending on net profit. It is clear that the trouble is small if the possible income from options and bonuses are included in a fixed amount of payment. But for Western “specialists” who are accustomed to other motivation schemes, such a situation, to put it mildly, is unusual. nine0003
DOSIER “BO”
Options as a system of remuneration of managers have been used in world practice since the late 1970s – early 1980s. The turning point in the history of this scheme of remuneration for top managers (and in the practice of some companies – all employees, regardless of their status) was the moment when the mechanism for vesting the right to dispose of a block of shares was used by the two largest corporations Apple Computer and General Electric. By the beginning of the 1990s, 82% of the companies included in the Standard & Poor’s 500 index had already stimulated their top managers in this way. At the same time, as global stock markets grew, the share of income received from stock options in the total -managers. Early 9In the 1900s, they already accounted for 25% of the income of top officials in companies, and in 1998 – more than 40%. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, there was an explosive growth of these indicators: the emergence of a “soap bubble” of high technologies in the American stock markets, combined with a massive flight of capital from emerging markets after the Asian crisis (and a number of local crises in Latin American countries) led to to the rapid rise of the Nasdaq, Dow Jones and S&P indices. Then the share of income received from options in the total “package” of income of top managers of American and European companies began to come close to 50%. nine0003
Attitudes towards options as a system of motivation for top managers changed dramatically after the collapse of the American energy giant Enron. Initially, it was believed that the ownership of shares should ensure the loyalty of the top manager of the company, his interest in its prosperity. However, on the example of the behavior of top managers of Enron, it became clear that company executives who own shares can mislead other shareholders and investors in order to maintain the growth of securities quotes and, consequently, increase their own income, albeit in a clearly short-term perspective. This led to a crisis of confidence in options as a motivation scheme in a number of European countries; in the US, this mechanism, despite the past corporate scandals, is still very popular. nine0003
INFORMATION “BO”
Types of options for top managers
A stock option gives a manager the right to buy back company shares at a fixed price for a certain period in the future. In other words, the manager gets the right to buy back the company’s shares in three years at the current price. Since the purchase price is fixed, the manager is interested in maximizing the market price of the shares over three years.

The console market has always been set up for a more “family”, simple immersion in the gaming industry – it’s hard to become an esportsman here, but you can relax on the couch, stock up on goodies and comfortably spend a couple of hours playing your favorite game. But everything changed with the advent of such an important system for gamepads as aim-assist. nine0003
We look into the origin of the term and tell how gamepaders filled the top of the rating tables using the most popular cross-platform games as an example.
Honesty and balance
Aim assist is a feature that helps gamepad players to automatically aim the crosshairs at an enemy. After all, aiming with sticks is much more difficult than using a mouse, which is a much more accurate tool.
The debate about the legality and ethics of aim assist has always tormented the soul of the gaming community, but in recent years – with the success of Fortnite, Call of Duty Warzone 1-2, Apex Legends and many others – their number has increased by an order of magnitude.
Millions of dollars are at stake in esports tournaments, and professional gamers and the PC audience, who do not want to part with keyboards and mice, are increasingly calling aim assist a form of legalized cheating.
No player shall have an unfair advantage over others. This rule is tacitly followed everywhere from basketball to Formula 1. The dimensions of the playground, the equipment used, even the relative power of the motors – everything should be the same here except for the skills of the players. nine0003
The “unequal” impact of technology on competitive play is not new to sports in general. For example, in Formula 1, active lighting and traction control were banned – they helped the racers too much. At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, LZR swimwear dominated the winning steps mercilessly, but after some discussion, they were banned for giving an unfair advantage.
Nike Vaporfly sneakers were generally considered by experts to be a form of “technological doping”. nine0003
Unless you get all athletes to wear the same shoes from the same brand, tailored to their body size and ability, you will never be able to isolate or immunize the sport from the impact of technology.
Bryce Dyer, sports technologist
But is it possible to apply this to competitive computer games?
Unfortunately, not at the moment – the gaming industry is as fragmented as possible. Each game, each developer uses the aim-assist functions differently: somewhere it’s a barely noticeable eyeliner, but somewhere it really looks like walking on the edge of an abyss. In the gaming industry, the rules for achieving parity between players are poorly spelled out. nine0003
Most developers in their products adhere to two types of implementation of the competitive element:
Achieving equality between players by any possible means. A good example here is Valorant, the successor and direct competitor of CS:GO. With full adherence to the rules of fair play, decent performance on any system and an impressive online component (server latency, correct processing of information and much more), the game completely abandons the casual audience, focusing on the relatively equal equipment of players – personal computers. Mouse, keyboard, monitor – and the difference is only in the hands of the one who sits down for Valorant. nine0128
No need to worry about mouse+keyboard vs controllers in Valorant. Lack of aim assist means they won’t show up at the “party”.

Attempts to balance players with different input methods varying degrees of success.
In the second case, the money that can be obtained from each possible piece of equipment comes to the fore. And the console market, as you know, is very, very large. Only for 2019year revenue was 32. 27 billion US dollars, and by 2027 it is projected to increase to 51.5 billion at a 5% average annual growth rate.
As long as the console market continues to generate its share of revenue, gamepad players will continue to be supported in their endeavors – and the number of PC players with this device will also grow.
Good examples are battle royales like Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzone and Apex Legends or just popular AAA blockbusters. They have aim assist and cross-platform play that allows players from different devices to join in a lobby. nine0003
Aim-assist ruined Fortnite for “keyboarders”.

These games don’t matter if you’re using a PC, PlayStation, Xbox, or an old iPhone with a cracked screen. Here everyone can play for a couple of hours, sign a contract and earn millions of dollars, just like Bugha, the Fortnite World Cup champion, did. Why spend a few thousand dollars on a PC built for the ultimate gaming experience when you can get by with an Xbox for a couple of hundred dollars? nine0003
On a normal level, combining a mouse, keyboard, and controller in the same lobby is not a problem.
Michael Grzesek, professional CS:GO player
But, according to Michael, as soon as it comes to big money, fair competition and equal conditions are necessary. Shroud even suggests organizing separate competitions for each of the input devices, and until this is done, aim assist will be a problem for the entire esports community. nine0003
But if for e-sportsmen, whose skills are on average higher in level, the problem begins to manifest itself when there is a question of receiving a prize in the form of money, then for an ordinary user, this very prize is a simple pleasure from the game or rating points. And the use of gamepads in the same lobby with “office workers” often interferes with this.
For shooters looking for pure competitive fairness, getting rid of aim-enabled controllers makes the difference – just one variable in an endless equation. When it comes to deciding what is best for the game to be fair or balanced, it is very difficult to establish fairness. nine0003
For companies like Epic and Respawn, the concept of fair competition is far less important than enjoying the game for the widest possible player base. Why is that? Banning the use of controllers at the highest levels of the game could alienate a huge segment of the audience.
History and device of the “aim-assist”
In the first 3D games, it was not only difficult to implement the aim assist system – it was not even discussed in the 80-90s of the last century. 3D itself was new to studios, and developers had to go through a series of tricks to ensure that users could get a decent gaming experience. A good example is Resident Evil, where the character was either shooting or moving, and the camera was fixed, which only allowed shooting in one plane. nine0003
But soon it was no longer possible to just take and put the player on the same level with the enemy – the community demanded more innovative solutions. And they came along with GoldenEye 007 from Rare.
The Stamper brothers, the founders of the company, in their project offered the players the following “ways to facilitate” the gameplay on consoles: but when an enemy appears, the sight is strictly fixed on it, which gives the gameplay a certain “cine-like quality”. nine0128
Enemies themselves are located in confined spaces like small rooms or narrow corridors.
Stelm helps to avoid particularly difficult firefights.
Together with Super Mario 64 or Alien Ressurection, the concept of auto-aiming has firmly entered the game development, when all the work of focusing the sight on the enemy is performed by a specialized system.
Alien Resurrection
With the advent of gamepads with two analog sticks, the gradual development of experience in the field of 3D and the introduction of online functionality, it became clear that one auto-aiming is not enough. The developers needed to provide console players with a satisfying yet equal experience in the confrontation and challenge them at the same time. Then Halo: Combat Evolved entered the scene. Faster gameplay, smarter AI, an intuitive aim assist system rather than auto-aim firmly cemented the principles of aim assist. nine0003
The system is based on Fitts’ law, which states that the time required to move the cursor to a target depends on the ratio of the distance to that target and the width of the target. Large objects are easier to aim at, small objects are more difficult, and the objects themselves can change in “apparent” size depending on distance and perspective. It is the aim-assist who makes the necessary changes to the formula of the law, leveling the inaccuracies when using the sticks.
The term “aim-assist” consists of two words: aim (“target”), and assist (“assistant”). What does this mean, and what does aim itself “consist” without assist? nine0003
Reaction rate. Reaction plays a key role in determining how any aim assist will behave during the game. Therefore, it is very important to include it in the parameters that control the aiming system. On average, it can take a player between 300 and 500ms to react to something in the game. With this in mind, it’s critical to slow down the aiming speed just enough to give the player proper response time. Games do this by slowing down the camera when a new element comes into view while moving. The effect is instant and imperceptible, but every millisecond counts for our brains. nine0128
Muscle memory. Most games have intelligent algorithms that continuously evaluate the player’s reaction time and adjust aim assist accordingly.
Dead zones. Sticks consist of potentiometers on two axes. The value in each direction varies from -1 to 1. Over time (or even due to improper production), the sticks begin to give false values around zero. To compensate for errors, there are zones that set the initial value of the hardware input near the highs/lows of the controller input. Simply put, up to some point close to zero (say 0.12), the input value will be 0, and around -1 or 1 (say 0.92 or -0.92), the value will be 1 and -1 respectively. And all these parameters in online games can be configured.
Muscles of the thumb. The muscles that control vertical aim are weaker than those that control horizontal aim. Therefore, vertical aiming is more difficult than horizontal aiming, and diagonal aiming is even more difficult. In order to level this difference, a mechanism for adjusting the vertical and horizontal speed is used.
nine0127 Turning speed acceleration. Consoles have a limited range of motion they can provide with sticks. Therefore, if you move the joystick for a short period of time, the speed will be slow and ensure accuracy. But if you move it longer, the speed will increase, which will allow you to save energy and turn around in time.
Let’s break it down into “components” and assist:
Forecasting. For any accurate program to work correctly, it must first correctly predict when help is needed. Otherwise, the game will not bring any pleasure. For example, you just dealt with one target, but the sight automatically jumps to the next one, while turning you 180 degrees. Aim assist makes a decision on aiming based on the proximity to the enemy, the duration of his stay in the area of the sight and the speed of movement. nine0128
Magnetism. A well-implemented helper needs to match the camera’s pan speed to the target’s speed.
Centering. This concept changes the speed at which the camera pans so that you aim at the center of the target. Usually only used to make small changes to ease player movement.
Hover speed reduction. Used for more accurate aiming. The disadvantage may be the inability to catch a moving target due to speed reduction, but this can be easily overcome with other settings. nine0128
Automatic hit. If the distance between two points is below a certain threshold, whenever the player shoots, each shot will be a guaranteed hit. In other words, the faster the player moves, the greater the chance of him hitting you. That is why you should not be surprised if a person in Warzone, driving a car and just noticing you, kills in one burst from a couple of tens of meters – this is just a “harmless” aim assist.
nine0129
When a player attempts to hit a moving target, magnetism or friction builds up and helps the player aim. The target’s “gravity” gives it a slight “pull force” and aiming causes the crosshair to literally “stick” to the target, making it harder to fly past where you’re trying to aim and slowing down as the crosshair gets closer to it.
Aim assist due to almost complete automation allows you to spend less time on the mechanics of aiming and keeping the enemy in the crosshairs, giving you room for movement (rolling, resetting animations, acceleration from walls in Apex legends) and other actions. nine0003
And what is worse: a “gamepader” standing in a column, shaving off an enemy in a second, or a bunch of people who know the movement like the alphabet and at the same time are able to destroy your entire squad without problems, almost with their eyes closed?
Psychology in theory and psychology in reality
When talking about aim assist, there are two important terms and their difference. Balance – when players from different platforms can be at the same level of the game using different means. Fair, fair gameplay – when all source devices are equal. A balanced approach maximizes mass audience enjoyment by giving players with less skill, experience, or financial backing a better chance of success—and that’s what most companies use. nine0003
Regan Mandrick, a professor at the University of Saskatchewan, along with colleagues Ian Stavness and Carl Gutwin, developed a series of experiments in a specially built prototype with a local connection, testing whether the influence of aim assist is harmful in multiplayer games. Surprisingly, they found that there were no negative effects from knowing that some players had aim assist turned on. Everyone liked the game – even players without the mentioned feature.
University where Mandrik did research
However, Mandrik emphasized that the research took place in a more relaxed environment than competitive multiplayer, where the perception of justice can be radically different. It was a test bench, where everyone clearly understood the goals and conditions of the study, and without the mass of details that make the aim assist such a spectacle, the picture came out far from reality – sterility was not the best way out.
In real matches, a different reaction is noticeable – many believe that playing on a controller requires less skill than using a keyboard and mouse. Here the bitterness of defeat can be caused by human nature. In her research, Mandrik found that when players won, they thought it was because of their skills, and when they lost, they claimed that the other person was getting help. These findings are consistent with the well-known phenomenon that people attribute success to themselves and blame external factors for failure. nine0003
But does this fully apply to an aim assist situation? Unfortunately not: unlike the sterile Mandrik layout, in equal conditions and especially at close range, in some games, the aim assist is too strong compared to the keyboard mouse.
In such cases, positioning, awareness and coordination of the team often help to escape from the owners of the gamepads: the same sniper rifles can serve as a good countermeasure, since at long distances when using weapons with a single fire mode, the aim-assist is not able to resist the “keyboard”. nine0003
But, no matter how ridiculous it may sound, most often these same sniper rifles are nerfed or even banned at major esports tournaments: for example, at a number of Call of Duty: Warzone Twitch Rivals events, after outrage from aim-assist supporters, conditional Kar and Swiss.
In general, it is in Warzone 1-2 or Apex Legends that you can meet a huge community of angry players who hate aim assists. All of them are different from each other: from different countries, different ages and, surprisingly, playing on different input devices. Yes, yes, even in the camp of “gamepaders” there are people who hate the aim-assist system, but continue to use it. nine0003
The best example of the benefit of an aim assist is that in Apex Legends Season 14, 22 of the top 25 “apex predators” (highest ranked) are using… a gamepad. Of course, we can say that the support system does not solve much, and true professionals will play great everywhere and on any device. But what about the fact that these are the top 25 traitors on PC?
An interesting rhetorical question arises: why would players from a platform that uses high-precision input methods switch to “weak” gamepads, where it is much more difficult to aim, and “assist” does not help at all? Not because the aim assist is overly strong in the game? Overall gamepad usage figures are also off the charts, with just over 50% of all ALGS (Apex Legends eSports League) players playing on a controller.
