Other Child Care Programs | Washington State Department of Children, Youth, and Families

There are more choices for early childhood education, care, and assistance which are not overseen by the Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF).

Department of Social and Health Services

The Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) offers many programs for parents affected by temporary situations such as loss of a job, and local school districts provide free preschool services for children with developmental delays.

Crisis Respite Care

Crisis respite, also known as “crisis nurseries” provide temporary respite for families experiencing challenging life circumstances when no other safe child care options are available. Created to provide immediate stress relief for parents and caregivers in times of crisis, care provided by most crisis respite can be accessed any time of the day or night and is offered free-of charge.

Crisis nurseries offer a safe, stable place for children when families are overwhelmed and need help. They may also offer outreach, support and training to families to prevent child abuse and neglect and help families offer safe and nurturing home environments.

Crisis respite providers in Washington include:

  • Margie’s Crisis Nursery, serving Mason, Lewis, Thurston Counties: 360-786-8907
  • Safe Families Western WA, serving King, Pierce, Snohomish, Thurston, and Skagit Counties: 1-877-341-7332
  • Safe Families Eastern WA, serving Spokane County: 1-844-244-1769
  • Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery in Spokane: 509-535-3155

Developmental Preschool

Local school districts offer free preschool to some children with special needs. Certified special education teachers, speech therapists, and other staff will help your child learn skills that will help them enter kindergarten ready to succeed.

If you aren’t sure whether your child will qualify for a developmental preschool program, your local school district can provide a screening at no cost to you. Contact your neighborhood school to learn about the services in your area.

Private Preschools or Kindergartens

Private preschools or kindergartens offer primarily educational curriculum for no more than four hours per day. DCYF does not license or oversee private preschools. However, some private preschools and kindergartens are certified with the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI).

A private preschool that operates more than four hours per day is subject to child care licensing and DCYF oversight. Some licensed child care providers may also offer kindergarten curriculum. You can learn more about these programs by searching Child Care Check.

Other programs may be accredited through their particular program approach, such as Montessori or Waldorf programs.

Have been to Tire Choice on numerous occasions ? minor issues like nails/screws in tires, all the way up to replacement of tires, and wheel and tire replacement on the family jeep. Consistent, quality, fairly priced service. Today ? my wife had another nail issue ? and Tire Choice squeezed her in, took care of it promptly, and were incredibly fair in the bill for the quick fix. Kudos to this company!….Read More

Wonderful people! Even though they had a busy and hectic morning, they fit me in for a quick tire fix instead of me having to come back or go somewhere else. I was in and out within an hour! Both the gentleman at the front desk and the lady who fixed my tire were very sweet so and accommodating.

Main Road | it’s… What is Maine Road?

Coordinates: 53°27′04.06″ N sh. 2°14′06.53″ W / 53.451128° N sh. 2.235147° W (G) (O) 53.451128, -2.235147

Maine Road (eng. Maine Road ) was a large football stadium in Moss Side, Manchester, England. It was the home ground of Manchester City Football Club from 1923 to 2003.

At the time of construction, the stadium was the largest club stadium in England and the second largest stadium in the country after Wembley London. The record attendance at Maine Road was set at 1934, when 84,569 spectators attended an FA Cup match between Manchester City and Stoke City, which is a record attendance for an English football club stadium (the world record was set at Wembley in the 1923 FA Cup Final). The stadium’s plan has changed several times over its eighty-year history. Before closing, Maine Road was a fully seated stadium with a capacity of 35,150 seats.

The 2002/03 season was Manchester City’s last season at Maine Road. The last match at the stadium took place on May 11, 2003. The following season, Manchester City moved to the new City of Manchester Stadium in the east of Manchester. Maine Road was destroyed in 2004.

Early seasons

The first match at Maine Road took place on August 25, 1923. City hosted Sheffield United and won 2-1 in front of 56,993 spectators [1] . After the end of World War II, City shared the stadium with another Manchester club, Manchester United, as United’s home stadium, Old Trafford, was badly damaged after the city was bombed by German aircraft. United paid City £5,000 per season plus a percentage of ticket sales [2] . During this period, Maine Road’s Premier League attendance record was set when 83,260 spectators attended a meeting between Manchester United and Arsenal on 17 January 1948. This is the national record attendance for an England Championship match [3] .

Hyde Road – frwiki.wiki

Hyde Road is a former football stadium built in West Gorton, Manchester, England.

It was the home of Manchester City and its predecessors from its construction in 1887 until 1923 when the club moved to Maine Road.

History

The name comes from Hyde Road, a road that starts east of Ardwick Green South in Ardwick and continues east towards Hyde. On the border between Gorton and Odenshaw, the road continues to bear the name Manchester Road.

Before it was used as a football field, this place was a wasteland, and when it was created, there were only elementary structures on the field. The first tier was built in 1888. Since there were no dressing rooms at the stadium until 1896, the players had to change at a nearby pub called the Hyde Road Hotel. In 1904 the stadium grew to seat 40,000, hosting the FA Cup semi-final between Newcastle United and Sheffield Wednesday that same year.

The stands were not neatly arranged due to lack of space, and at 1920 the weekly number of supporters was exceeded. The decision to search for a new stadium was made in after the main tier burned down. So Manchester City moved to Main Road, an 80,000-seat stadium, and Hyde Road was soon demolished. One of the stadium’s structures still exists, part of the roof was used in the construction of Shay, a stadium in the city of Halifax.

Saturday 08:00-13:00

The following documents must be submitted to register a child:

– passport of one of the parents (legal representatives) of the child;

– birth certificate of the child;

– documents confirming the right at the time of the application of parents (legal representatives) to an extraordinary or priority provision of a place in a preschool organization in accordance with applicable law (if any).

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO APPLY?

The following documents are required to apply

1) Child’s birth certificate

2) Parent’s passport

3) Documents confirming the right to benefits

You need to register on the website and apply online, or in person contact the MKU “MFC in Stavropol” with a package of documents for placing the child on the waiting list for kindergarten.

WHEN I APPLY, DO I HAVE TO CHOOSE 3 KINDERGARTENS? WHY DO I DO THIS IF I WANT TO SEND THE CHILD TO A SPECIFIC KINDERGARTEN?

When submitting an application, in accordance with regulatory documents, each parent can indicate no more than 3 kindergartens where they want to enroll their child. This is done so that during distribution, if there are not enough places in the priority kindergarten, the system can try to distribute the child to the second priority. If there are no places there, then – in the third. However, if you have chosen one particular kindergarten, then when applying, you can only indicate it. In this case, if there are not enough places in the kindergarten, your application will be postponed until the next year. Application time will remain.

WHAT IS THE QUEUING ALGORITHM?

The queue is formed in accordance with the following algorithm: applications are lined up in the order of submission (the day, hour, minute and even second of submission are fixed). But the applications submitted on preferential terms are distributed among them in the first place. Also, during automatic distribution, the number of free places in a particular kindergarten in the corresponding age groups is taken into account. Therefore, the location of the parent in the queue may change.

CAN I SEE MY PLACE IN THE LINE SOMEWHERE?

The parent does not have this function, because the principle of queuing does not guarantee you that your place in the queue will remain unchanged until distribution. The fact is that the queue fixes not only the time of application, but also the benefits available to applicants. Preferential applications have priority in distribution, regardless of the time of submission of such an application. You can assess the current situation in terms of the availability of places in the kindergarten you are interested in by studying the section “Select a preschool”.

IF I FORGET / LOST THE PASSWORD TO ENTER THE PORTAL, WHAT SHOULD I DO?

In the “Login” section, you need to click on the link “Forgot your password?”, Enter your e-mail in the field that opens, and you will immediately receive an email with a new password.

IF I PREVIOUSLY APPLIED FOR ONE CHILD, DO I HAVE TO RE-REGISTER TO APPLY FOR A SECOND CHILD NOW?

If you have previously applied for one child, you do not need to register in the system a second time to apply for a second child. You log in with your old username and password and add a new application in the Applications section. Information about previously submitted applications, as well as about previously registered children, will be stored in your personal account.

MY APPLICATION HAS BEEN ALLOCATED WITH A NUMBER AFTER SUBMISSION. IS MY STATEMENT NUMBER IN THE QUEUE?

The number that was assigned to your application has nothing to do with your place in the queue. The application number is generated automatically by the system and is only relevant when contacting technical support to resolve technical issues, if any.

After submitting the application, the child enters the general queue for admission to preschool. Applications are sorted by date of submission, linking preschool to certain addresses (in large cities) and category of child benefits. You can choose to enroll up to 3 preschools in order of preference for enrollment – if the child does not have enough space in the first preschool selected, then the system tries to allocate him to the next one, etc. You can check which preschool the child is currently assigned to in your personal account.

Boston Public Garden – Wikipedia

Square , also known as Boston Public Garden , is a large park in the heart of Boston, Massachusetts, next to the Boston Common. It is part of the Emerald Necklace park system and is bounded by Charles Street and Boston Common to the east, Beacon Street to the north, Arlington Street and Back Bay to the west, and Boylston Street to the south. The Community Garden was the first public botanical garden in America.

History

Boston Back Bay, including the land on which the garden sits, was a mud flat before filling began in the early 1800s. The Public Garden land was the earliest to fill, as the area that is now Charles Street was used as a cable car from 1796 d. [4] The city of Boston granted the cable makers the right to use the land on July 30, 1794. [5] after a fire destroyed cable cars in a more densely populated area of the city. As a condition of its use, the owners of the cable car were required to build a causeway and fill in the land that is now Charles Street and the land immediately adjacent to it (now part of a public garden).

Most of the landfill came from Mount Vernon, a former hill in the Beacon Hill area of Boston. Initially, gravel and soil were brought from the hill to the landfill by handcart. By 1804 a gravity railway had been built to bring material quickly from the top of the hill to the swamp; Today, Mount Vernon no longer exists, having been completely removed to be used as a dumping ground for the Back Bay.

In February 1824, the city of Boston bought the land given to the cable workers for $50,000. [6] The following year a proposal to turn this land into a cemetery was defeated by 1632 votes to 176. The public garden was founded in 1837 when philanthropist Horace Gray [7] petitioned to use the land as the first public botanical garden in United States. By 1839, a corporation called Horace Gray and Associates was formed and became the “Proprietors of the Botanic Gardens, Boston”. [8] The Corporation was commissioned to create what is now the Boston Community Garden. However, there was constant pressure to sell the land to private individuals for new housing developments. In the opening year of the Boston Public Garden, Mr. John Fottler, Sr., nicknamed “The Father of Our Parks,” delivered the first batch of plants ever planted in the gardens from the Hon. Marshall P. Wilder of Dorchester. [9]

Although much of the current garden was filled in by the mid-1800s, the Back Bay area remained an undeveloped tidal basin. In 1842, the state legislature created the Boston Harbor and Back Bay Commissioners to determine how best to develop the land; the state wanted to control the land and build a quarter for the upper class outside the Public Garden. The city of Boston petitioned the state for control of the basin (which was controlled by the then independent City of Roxbury), in hopes of generating significant revenue from any developments that would be built after it was filled. When the state commission denied Boston’s petition, the Boston City Council threatened to sell the garden to developers, which would greatly reduce the area’s attractiveness to the upper elite that the state hoped to attract.

The conflict between the City of Boston and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts was finally resolved when the Tripartite Treaty of 1856 was agreed upon by both parties and passed by a general vote of citizens 6,287 to 99. [10] In the agreement, Boston renounced its rights to build the Public Garden; in return, he received a strip of land that is now part of the garden, adjacent to Arlington Street. [11]

Drawing of a square from 1850 facing east. Notice the empty foreground: where the Back Bay area is today, mud flats are visible in this drawing.

In October 1859, Alderman Crane submitted a detailed plan for the Garden to the Committee of Public and Public Places and was approved. [12] Construction began quickly, the pond was completed the same year, and the wrought iron perimeter fence erected in 1862. Today there is a small island on the north side of the pond, but it was originally a peninsula connected to the mainland. This place has become so popular among lovers that the city forester John Galvin decided to cut off his connection with the earth. [13]

The 24 acres (97,000 m 2 ) landscape was designed by George F. Meach. The paths and flower beds were laid out by city engineer James Slade and forester John Galvin. The garden plan included a number of fountains and statues, many of which were installed in the late 1860s. The most famous statue is perhaps George Washington, made in 1869 by Thomas Ball, which dominates the park’s western entrance facing Commonwealth Avenue. The signature suspension bridge over the middle of the pond was erected in 1869year.

Initially, gas lamps were used to light the garden at night, but in 1883 the construction of electric lamps was started. Initially, there was concern about the use of electric lamps, as this would require wires to be run through the garden, and some members of the government feared that this would harm the site’s aesthetics. [14] But as electric lighting replaced gas, and vandalism in the garden – such as stealing and destroying flowers – became an increasing problem, electric lighting was eventually installed everywhere.

Today the flagpole stands on the east side of the garden, near Charles Street and south of the main entrance. The original flagpole was struck by lightning and destroyed in 1918, and in 1920 the city provided $2,500 to build a new one. [15] V 19In 1982, the city provided an additional $25,000 to improve the flagpole. A round granite bench was placed around the pillar, the work being carried out by the Friends of the Square. [16]

On January 6, 1913, the City Council placed the garden with the Boston Common, directly administered by the City’s Department of Public Areas. This department made it illegal to walk on the grass or garden, and arrests were made for this offense at least until the 1960s. [17] [18] Today, sitting on the grass is allowed, except for certain areas of the lawn, access to which is prohibited by a sign. [19]

An automated sprinkler system was installed in 2008 at a cost of $800,000. Heavy foot traffic, many plant species, the garden’s historical and cultural significance, and a variety of microclimates have increased the complexity of the automated system. [20]

Originally, the Charles Street side of the Community Garden (together with the adjacent parts of the Boston Common) was used as an unofficial landfill, as it is the lowest part of the garden; this, along with the fact that the Garden was originally a salt marsh, resulted in this edge of the Public Garden becoming “a damp stew that stank and was erratic to walk on, leading people to other parts of the park.” Although plans to modernize this part of the Garden have long been in place, the cost of moving the required amount of soil (approximately 9000 cu. Yards (6,900 m 3 ), weighing 14,000 short tons (13,000,000 kg)) prevented work from starting. This finally changed in the summer of 1895 when the required amount of soil was excavated from Tremont Street Metro and used to renew both the Garden and Common sides of Charles Street. [21]

The Community Garden is operated jointly by City Hall, the City of Boston Parks Department, and a non-profit organization. Friends of the square. It was designated a Boston Landmark by the Boston Landmarks Commission at 1977 and declared a National Historic Landmark in 1987. [1] [3]

Together with the Boston Common, the parks form the northern terminus of the Emerald Necklace, a long string of parks designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. While the Common is mostly unstructured open space, the Public Garden contains a pond and a large series of official plantings that are maintained by the city and others and change from season to season. Mostly flat and with a vertical drop of less than five feet, the garden is designed in the style of an English landscape garden. The straight road, including the bridge that crosses the pond, passes through the two main entrances from Charles and Arlington Streets; but its paths are tortuous and asymmetrical. [22]

The square is rectangular and bordered on the south by Boylston Street, on the west by Arlington Street, and on the north by Beacon Street where it meets Beacon Hill. On its east side, Charles Street separates the Public Garden from the Common. The greenway connecting the Community Garden to the rest of the Emerald Necklace is a strip of park that runs west down the center of Commonwealth Avenue towards Back Bay Fens and Muddy River.

Pond

In the warm season, on 4 acres (16000 m 2 ) the pond is home to a great many ducks and one or more swans. A popular tourist attraction is the Swan Boats, which began operations in 1877. [23] For a small fee, tourists can board a boat decorated with a white swan at the stern. Then the boat is turned around the pond by a guide sitting inside a swan.

The current pair of swans swan-thorns named Romeo and Juliet after A Pair of Shakespeares However, it turned out that both were women. [24]

Being no more than three feet deep at its deepest point, [25] the pond freezes easily during the cold season. In 1879, the Boston City Council issued an ordinance to keep the ice skating pond in winter; [26] Today there is an official skating rink at Frog Pond on the Common instead.

Shortly after construction, the pond presented a serious health problem as it was fed by a mixture of salt water from the Charles River, sewage water, and fresh water from the Frog Pond in Common. [27] As a result, thick slime and accompanying stench were often present in the pond. Consequently, the garden keepers drain and clean the pond every year. [28]

Plantings

The garden’s permanent flower plantings include numerous varieties of roses, bulbs and flowering shrubs. The beds on the sides of the center path are transplanted on a rotating schedule throughout the year, with different colors for each season from mid-spring to early fall. Planting comes from 14 greenhouses the city uses for this purpose in Franklin Park. [23]

The square is planted with a wide range of native and introduced trees; among them stand out the weeping willows around the shore of the lagoon and the European and American elms along the garden paths, along with horse chestnuts, dawn sequoias, European beeches, ginkgo trees and one California redwood. Other notable trees include: [29]

  • Beech trees
    • European beech
    • Purple beech

George Washington Equestrian Statue, designed by Thomas Ball

      • At the Arlington Street Gate, opposite Commonwealth Avenue, is an equestrian statue of George Washington, designed and cast by Thomas Ball. Unveiled on July 3, 1869, the statue is 16 feet high, made of bronze and stands on a granite pedestal 4. 9 m high, with a total height of 38 feet (12 m). The statue was funded primarily by donations from local residents and was entirely built by Massachusetts artists and artisans. [30]
      • To the north of the Equestrian Statue is Mary E. Moore’s Little Children’s Fountain Museum. [31]
      • The Aether Monument, located on the corner of Arlington and Beacon Streets in the northwest corner of the garden, marks the first use of ether as an anesthetic. [32] Designed by John Quincy Adams Ward and donated to the city on June 27, 1868 by Thomas Lee, this is the oldest monument in the garden. [33] The statue’s carvings, 30 feet high, made of granite and red marble, speak of the Parable of the Good Samaritan. [34]
      • To the north of the Ether Monument is Daniel Chester French and Henry Bacon’s 1924 memorial fountain to Boston philanthropist George Robert White, called the Angel of the Waters. Constructed of granite and bronze, the fountain was taken out of service in the 1980s and remained so until 2016, when it was repaired and restored by Friends of the Square at a cost of $700,000. [35]
      • The first statue in the garden created by a woman was that of Anna Coleman Ladd. Fountain of babies Triton [36] on the east side of the garden. Although some people think they are a boy and a girl, they are actually her two daughters. It was purchased by the garden in 1927.
      • Bashki Paeva “The Boy and the Bird”, [37] in the fountain on the west side of the garden was made by a Russian immigrant who modeled it when she worked as a ticket clerk at the Park Street station at the MBTA.
      • Lilian Saarinen Bagheera Fountain, [38] dynamic panther statue from Kipling’s Jungle Book is almost hidden behind a tree.
      • A set of bronze statues to Nancy Schön, dated 1987, based on the main characters of the children’s story Way for Ducklings is located between the pond and the entrance from Charles and Beacon streets.
      • At the east gate on Charles Street there is a bronze statue of Edward Everett Hale to Bela Pratt, and donated to the city on May 22, 1913. [39]
      • Along the south park walk is a statue erected in 1915 by Wendell Phillips (1811–1884), orator and abolitionist. Mayor John F. Fitzgerald allocated funds of $20,000 [40] for a statue designed by Daniel Chester French.
      • Colonel Thomas Cass, commander of the 9th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry who served during the American Civil War, is also commemorated on the south walkway. The statue was erected in 1899.
      • Next to Cass’s statue is Thomas Ball with a statue of Charles Sumner, a senator from Massachusetts during the Civil War era. This statue was built in 1878.
      • On the walk there is also a monument to Tadeusz Kosciuszko, a Polish citizen who fought in the American Revolution as a colonel. The statue was erected by the artist. Theo Alice Ruggles Kitson at 1927
      • And the statue of William Ellery Channing stands in the southwest corner of the garden, facing Arlington Street Church. Completed in June 1903 [41] to Herbert Adams, it was presented to the city by John Foster, a member of that church, and placed on this site at his request. [42]
      • The Boston Public Garden Pedestrian Bridge lagoon crossing, designed by William G. Preston, opened June 1, 1867. [43] It was the world’s shortest suspension bridge work before being converted to a girder bridge in 1921 years old. His original suspension system is now purely decorative. [ citation needed ]
      • A Japanese garden lantern dated 1587 was donated to Boston by Bankio Matsuki and installed at the edge of a pond in 1906. [44] One of the oldest existing lanterns of its kind, it was originally located in the garden of Momoya Palace in Kyoto and is made of cast iron. [45]
      • In July 2004, a memorial was dedicated to the 206 Massachusetts who died in the September 11, 2001 attacks. Designed by Victor Walker, it is located inside the Community Garden, on the corner of Arlington and Newbury streets.
      • At the head of the bridge, at the steps leading to the Swan Boats, is a plaque honoring USMC Lieutenant Michael P. Quinn of Charlestown, who was killed in action in Vietnam on August 29, 1969. The memorial plaque was consecrated by the members of the committee. Michael P. Quinn Scholarship Fund on Patriot Day in 1986.

      Care and Maintenance

The park is operated by the City of Boston, who spent $1.2 million in 2005 to maintain three parks. [46] The city’s efforts are complemented by a charity known as Friends of the Square, also known as Pink Brigade. The charity helped fund the renovation of Ether Monument in 2006 and employs tree and shrub maintenance professionals. [46] Volunteers meet regularly to trim and maintain bushes. Financial support also comes from private sources such as the Beacon Hill Garden Club. 9 Friends of the square. If you have a high level of English, then there is a great opportunity to work in American companies. For job openings, head to sites like Indeed, ZipRecruiter, or Careerjet.

This is the most important thing to know about job hunting in Boston, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles. After all, with a positive attitude and an optimistic outlook on the future, you will find your dream job in the country.

For Russian-speakers in Boston, the search for vacancies takes place in three stages.

First : answer basic questions like: What can I do? My level of English? What is my previous profession called in Boston? What salary do I expect? They help to choose the direction in the search for the first job in the city.

Second : select 2-3 resources to search for a suitable vacancy.
If these are new immigrants with basic English, then they start viewing ads from specialized sites for Russian speakers. For example, BAZAR.club. They look into social networks and thematic communities, groups and forums in Boston.
If they have great spoken English and plan to work in American companies, they go to sites like Indeed.

Third : writing a basic resume. Tips on how to write it according to American standards, we told in our instructions.
This is an additional passive method that will help attract the attention of future employers to your candidacy. CVs should be posted on job boards and resume directories.

Boston has all the conditions for finding a job for job seekers with both advanced and basic English proficiency.
To search for a job without knowing the language, they use job directories for immigrants, such as the BAZAR.club website, thematic publics with vacancies on Telegram and Facebook.

Depending on your qualifications and language proficiency, you may be able to find a job in a Boston company owned by either an American or an immigrant from an Eastern European country.

⇒ Working for an American employer.

You are fluent in English (level B2-C2), reside legally in the United States, have an American education or a diploma that has passed the evaluation process.

Working in such companies has a number of advantages: full/partial health insurance coverage, high salaries, professional development opportunities, etc.

⇒ Work for a Russian, Ukrainian employer.

You have recently moved to Boston and have a basic level of English, without a US degree or a validated degree from your country’s university in the US.

Positions in these companies usually require you to have basic or no English, legal status in the country and additional requirements for certain vacancies. For example, a trucker needs CDL class A rights and confirmation of a clean record.

Compared to other cities such as New York or San Francisco, the average salary in Boston is slightly lower. It is $71,290, which is the average of all salaries, regardless of industry, qualifications, and position. So that figure includes everyone from students flipping hamburgers to CEOs of Fortune 500 companies.

Review of: Cape Cod National Seashore

Two winds at once 💨🌬💨and a cat

      Let’s start with parking:
      All roadsides are parked.
There is a huge parking lot on the beach where they wanted 20 bucks for an hour.
I had to leave the car in a distant parking lot in the forest and on a local trailer 🚂 🚂 🚂 💨to get to the coveted beach.
      Lots of cyclists.
The beach itself: at the entrance there is a sign: watch out for white sharks!) the beach is beautiful, yes.
There are a lot of people.
Such an unpleasant and unexpected effect as a constantly changing wind. Like a hair dryer, it’s icy, but warm. Because of this, do not really buy. Courageous American students with a can of beer came in waist-deep for a swim. Some met face to face with a fur seal, which, not being afraid of the crowds of people on the shore, periodically surfaced and immediately got into the photos of iPads and iPhones 😂😂😂
In general, very picturesque places, somewhat reminiscent of the Baltic states due to the cold ocean and pine forests.
I understand why this cape is a favorite place of all American presidents. The weather in August was not happy, it was hot, but at the same time there were thunderstorms and showers.

      Harvard University

Why should a Russian tourist come to Cambridge, a suburb of Boston, a small town on the other side of the Charles River? Firstly, in order to find out, and to remember for someone, that American Cambridge is different, not English Cambridge, and this will make you a little disappointed . .. Therefore, the phrase “we have been to Cambridge” will not make much impression on educated and prepared listeners, especially after clarifying which Cambridge you have been to. However, you will have a trump card in reserve when you say that you went to Cambridge to see Harvard! This is another matter! The elite university is the main attraction of Cambridge. After seeing several of the University’s historic brick buildings, including Harvard Hall, the President’s Office, and the University Memorial Church, you can say, “Well, we didn’t finish Harvard ourselves, but we still went to Cambridge and saw how everything works there…”. In fact, with a tour, you will see from the outside a very small part of this giant, elite Ivy League university with over two thousand faculty members and seven thousand students. Its alumni include the largest number of billionaires in the United States. Now there are seven faculties, which we would call humanitarian. The exact and technical sciences at the respective faculties are studied at the famous Massachusetts Institute of Technology located here in Cambridge.

Walking through the center, we saw this charming building of the John F. Kennedy Museum many times. I was lucky enough to visit the JFK Museum at the end of my vacation.
I really liked the museum itself, a lot of facts from the life of John F. Kennedy, a lot of photos and stories, newspaper articles, recorded speeches. Interesting and exciting. Entrance cost $ 25 – a little expensive for a small museum, the price corresponds to a standard ticket for large tours. US landmarks like the Empai Stay Building or the Museum of Modern Art. Hynes elementary school: Hynes Elementary School – Golf School District 67

Community – Golf School District 67

Golf School District 67 is a unique and special district. Our school and community are synonymous, partnering together to inspire our learners for lifelong success. Families want to be here and stay here.

This creates a challenge. With more and more families looking to send their children to our highly rated schools, our enrollment has been growing at an unsustainable pace and it’s starting to show.

We have run out of space, and even with using temporary trailers our average class size is the highest of all neighboring districts. Without adequate space, our students have limited access to the 21st century programming that is readily available to students in other districts. As a result, our academic ratings are starting to slip.

We face other challenges as well. Our student-teacher ratio is by far the highest compared to our peer districts. Our instructional time is limited. Our resources are being spread thin trying to maintain two buildings, also leading to inefficiencies in staffing and limited choices in electives. And using mobile classrooms leads to significant safety and security concerns that must be addressed.

Even with these challenges, we have all the foundations for success. Our staff, school board, and community work tirelessly and creatively to make our district the “little engine that could.”

Nowhere is that more obvious than in our district’s finances. We have made incredible progress improving our finances by implementing a zero-based budgeting philosophy and better utilizing our resources. We now spend the least per pupil of any peer district in the region. We have reduced spending on administrative costs and staffing so we can invest our limited funds in classrooms. As a result of our fiscal responsibility, we have steadily increased our fund balance to a much healthier level while maintaining a tax rate that is 20% lower than our neighboring districts.

Over the past year, our community has come together to collaborate on a solution to our space issues. We have developed a new community-driven strategic plan that benefits everyone. This consensus $56 million plan would build a new school building to educate all Golf 67 students on the current Hynes Elementary School campus. The plan will now appear on our ballots in the upcoming June 28th election for community approval.

If the referendum is successful, we will be able to:

      • Finally Solve Our Current and Future Space Issues
      • Provide a Safer School for Our Children and Teachers
      • Give Our Students 21st Century Learning Environments

The new school building will give us additional and larger classrooms, larger hallways, improved building layout, better access to nursing staff, and increase storage. This increased capacity will support increased student collaboration and small group instruction, more efficient use of space, and the future potential to reduce class sizes. The new building will also eliminate the need for mobile classrooms, provide more secure entrances, and update our security and intercom systems. Finally, it will allow us to provide our students 21st century learning environments that support high-quality teaching and active collaboration through modernized learning spaces and media centers.

Building a new school building has two additional benefits to the community. It will allow the district to become even more efficient and effective with the public’s tax dollars. And once construction is complete, the district will be able to sell or lease the current Golf Middle School, which would provide additional revenue that could be used to fund additional teachers to lower class sizes and provide more specials for students.

This consensus plan will overcome our space and staffing issues and provide our district with the tools needed to inspire learners for lifelong success.

      SCHOOL PERFORMANCE

Most New Orleans public schools are charter schools, public schools governed by non-profit boards. Each board is given a contract to operate their charter school for a number of years. When the contract is up for renewal, the Orleans Parish School Board or Louisiana Department of Education uses school performance to determine if the contract should be renewed. If the school hasn’t demonstrated acceptable performance, it may close at the end of the school year, or be taken over by a new non-profit board.

      Blanket for passive school

      0

Few architects in the UK can boast that they listen to environmental consultants, designers or occupants of their completed projects. And those who learn from their mistakes and use the experience gained in subsequent projects are generally fit to be entered in the Red Book.

Architype, representatives of a new generation of enthusiastic architects, built the first schools in the UK to meet the German Passivhaus standard. With their work, they proved that a school can be not only a beautiful building, but also a building where it is comfortable to study due to its thoughtfulness and energy efficiency.

“Energy is a bit like waste: it’s always good if it can be recycled, but it’s better to just produce less of it. It is the same with energy: you can use its renewable sources, solar panels, or you can simply consume less of it.”
      Jonathan Hynes, Bureau Director Architype

      What is the Passivhaus standard?

Recall that this German building energy efficiency standard developed by the PassivhausInstitut is an indicator of low energy consumption, comfort in the interior space and architectural quality of the facility. Many people think in vain that it is applicable only to housing: in German, “Haus” means not only a house, but also any building, and the standard is suitable for a building of any typology. The figures speak for its progressiveness: the standard energy consumption of an ordinary school in England is 100 kWh / m2 per year, and a building built according to the Passivhaus standard should consume no more than 15 kWh / m2 per year. Unlike other standards, Passivhaus helps to reduce energy consumption by optimizing design decisions, such as finding the most compact form, the best orientation of the building, etc.

The Passivhaus standard is not often seen in England, as the local energy efficiency regulations work the exact opposite way. Compared to Passivhaus, the green standard BREEAM, popular in England and lobbied by the government, has numerous evaluation criteria that often have nothing to do with energy consumption: for example, points can be obtained if the distance between the designed building and the nearest mailbox is less than 500 meters. In addition, BREEAM is focused not on reducing the amount of energy consumed, but on the production of additional energy from renewable sources.

How does a Passivhaus architect work?

First, it reduces the thermal conductivity of walls, roofs, ceilings and doors as much as possible. Secondly, he takes care of the thermal tightness of the building: all “cold bridges” (areas of heat loss, most often found at the junctions of the building’s structural elements) must be nullified or minimized. In addition, already at the initial design stage, the building is modeled using the PHDP (Passive House Design Package) software. However, British architects usually first completely draw the building, think through the layouts, and only then give the engineers to calculate the energy costs. They are trying to optimize something, but the probability of correcting errors in the finished project is extremely small. Therefore, it is much more effective to think about this at earlier stages of work, when the project can be significantly changed if necessary, for example, to save heat.

The most difficult thing in the Passivhaus standard is checking the object for compliance, where the indicators are not only the calculated data of design engineers, but also real measurements in an already built and operated house. And to build exactly as it was designed is a well-known headache for all architects.

      Who are Architype Architects?

Architype is a brand new architecture firm founded 29 years ago and over the years has earned an enviable reputation for designing quality energy efficient buildings. Their original approach is dictated by the desire to involve customers and future residents in the design process. Empirically, they have developed a baggage of technical solutions that improve the quality of the “manufactured product”.

During its existence, the Architype team has grown from five to 53 people, yet they have managed to maintain a fresh and creative approach to design, including frequent review and discussion of designs. The company’s annual turnover is 3 million pounds per year.

Bushbury Hill School. Photo © Leigh Simpson. Contributed by Architype

Why did Architype decide to adopt the Passivhaus standard in England?

About five years ago, Architype, in collaboration with Oxford Brooks University (one of the largest research institutions in the field of energy efficiency technologies), collected and analyzed information about the “work” of school buildings built by this office. As a result, it turned out that despite various energy-efficient strategies, these schools consumed a huge amount of energy because the windows were opened in winter. And at this point, the adaptation of the Passivhaus standard to British realities interested Architype, because, thanks to mechanical ventilation and thermal tightness, buildings built according to this standard consumed significantly less energy and generated less CO2. An additional plus was a real opportunity to study how the building “works”, and which design solutions help to improve energy efficiency the most.

Many architects fear that the Passivhaus standard will limit their imagination. But the architects of Architype claim that it is precisely the rigid framework set by them that launches a full-fledged creative process in their heads.

Through the use of Passivhaus Architype methods in their recent projects, they have achieved a radical simplification of forms and details, streamlined the design process and even architectural supervision. They manage to achieve the desired results by thinking through each solution step by step and testing its performance in practice. According to Bureau Director Jonathan Hynes, the most important lesson for Architype was the importance of simplifying the project in general and design details in particular.

Since building typology was not the deciding factor, Architype was willing to try the Passivhaus standard on any project. Now, having accumulated experience in this area, they are designing a university, an archive building, a village for 150 houses, a church and several private houses according to the principles of this standard. However, five years ago they specialized in school buildings, which is why they became their first Passivhaus test site. The only significant requirement from the sponsor of the five schools, Wolverhampton County Council, was to keep to a very modest budget.

To date, Architype has completed the construction of two schools, Oakmeadow Elementary School and Bushbury Hill School, with a third, Swillington Elementary School, under construction in November 2013. All of them replaced obsolete and therefore demolished school buildings, and they owe their appearance to the current government initiative. However, Jonathan Hines believes that the further spread of “passive” schools in England is a big question just because of the difficulties with public funding. Therefore, Architype hope that such projects will be in great demand, for example, in Wales, where the public funding system is different from the English one.

      Architectural Features of Passive Schools

The design process began with finding the optimal shape, number of storeys, depth and orientation of the building using the already mentioned PHDP dynamic simulation program. As a result of the initial research, it became clear how important the compactness of the building is to reduce energy consumption. The minimization of the building surface area in relation to the floor area made it possible to achieve energy cost optimization already at the concept stage. As a result, for both schools already built, a composition was chosen from simple rectangular 2-story volumes with a central space that serves as recreation.

The building is designed to allow sunlight to enter all school areas and to minimize the use of artificial lighting. To reduce the possibility of overheating during the summer months, the number of west- and east-facing windows has been reduced to zero, as low-angled sunlight is always more difficult to obscure, and therefore north-south facing windows.

All rooms have cross-ventilation, which is mainly used during the summer and off-season. In addition, during the warm months, as an additional measure, the central recreation is converted into a “chimney”, where, due to the height difference and the effect of self-drafting, warm air rises and exits through the upper windows. For winter, ventilation with a heat recovery system is provided. Needless to say, compared to schools where windows are opened for ventilation during the cold season, such a system significantly reduces heat loss. It differs from the standard recuperation system in that the fresh air entering the room is heated by the heat from the treated air from the central recreation. In this space, the air is passively heated by solar radiation and internal heat release, including from schoolchildren running around during breaks.

The Passive Schools design has paid much attention to the thermal integrity of the building and the minimization of the already mentioned “cold bridges” – an issue often forgotten in England. Most of these “bridges” are formed in the area of the foundation, since it is in direct contact with the ground, and at the junctions of structural elements. The architects found an original answer to this question by suggesting that the designers design a foundation that would be completely thermally insulated and would not directly touch the ground. Initially, the British designers – partners of Architype said that this was technically impossible, despite the fact that in Germany and Austria this method is widely used in the construction of “passive” buildings, but later Architype still managed to convince them. In the end, this solution turned out to be even cheaper than a conventional strip foundation, since the applied method required less excavation. When such a system was implemented, the number of “cold bridges” in the foundation area was reduced to zero.

To get rid of “cold bridges” at the junctions of structural elements, the architects came up with the idea of dividing the building structure into internal and external parts. The entire interior of the structure is completely wrapped in a layer of thermal insulation, called a “blanket”, and therefore completely sealed. Moreover, the thermal insulation of the foundation adjoins the thermal insulation of the walls, creating a closed loop, which made it possible to completely solve the problem of “cold bridges”. However, due to this decision, visors, canopies and similar facade elements had to be attached to additional external structures that were not connected to the main frame.

Special attention has been paid to simplifying structural joints. The design team had to work hard to find a balance between heat loss through windows and solar radiation, which is important for passive heating, which ultimately led to strict control of all windows and doors in the building.

All materials used in the construction of schools are environmentally friendly and most of them were produced in England, which minimized CO2 emissions from the transport of materials. We also used Warmcell, a thermal insulation made from recycled newsprint.

In the first month and a half after the completion of construction, the architects visited their schools every week (then once every two weeks and once a month) in order to monitor the functioning of all systems and understand how its inhabitants feel in the building. In addition to measuring the amount of energy consumed, CO2 levels, temperature and humidity, Architype asked all school staff to take notes on how the building “works” and how they feel in it. All this information was collected and discussed at meetings with contractors in order to improve future projects.

Thus, in one of the first school projects, it was found that the level of consumed primary energy significantly exceeded the norm. This was caused by the presence of heating in the sprinkler pump room, which was not thermally insulated. On the other hand, during the monitoring, the architects found out that the ventilation system with heat recovery contributes to the fact that children are more attentive in the classroom, as they breathe fresh air.

Since the building is perfectly insulated and airtight, one domestic boiler is enough to heat it, which is usually used in apartments in England, but during the design, the school technical service asked to install a second, additional boiler – which later, of course, turned out to be superfluous. The commission that checked the building drew attention to the fact that, despite the cold weather, both boilers were turned off – because even without heating, a comfortable temperature was maintained inside the building.

Throughout the monitoring period, which lasted a year, the architects told the staff of their schools how to correctly use the lighting, ventilation and other systems in such an unusual building and even published an illustrated “user’s manual”. Architype also spent a lot of time explaining to students why energy is needed, where to get it and, most importantly, how to save it. Schoolchildren were also allowed to make comments to teachers if, for example, they forgot to turn off the lights. Children came from such a prospect to complete delight, which cannot be said about teachers.

Based on the results of the year of monitoring, it turned out that the “passive” school buildings of Architype did indeed consume no more than 14–15 kWh/m2 per year, while earlier schools of the same architects consumed 40–50 kWh/m2 in year; however, ordinary schools in England do spend 100 kWh / m2 per year.

Analyzing the entire process of creating and implementing the project, we can conclude that success is largely due to the well-coordinated work of the entire team: the customer, with whom Architype has been cooperating for many years, the contractor, architects and designers. Numerous meetings and negotiations allowed all team members to clearly understand from the very beginning what is being done and why. A huge number of checks and tests were also carried out, including a smoke test that determines the tightness of the building.

Architype has been able to achieve amazing results by using the Passivhaus standard as a design tool and not spending any extra money on energy efficient technologies at all (although Passivhaus buildings usually pay for themselves quite quickly anyway: on average in 5-10 years depending on energy prices ). By basing their workflow on observing what “works” in a building and how, these architects strive for quality by simplifying the building itself and its details, while proving that energy efficiency is not at odds with beauty and elegance. As the musician Charles Mingus said, “The complexity of simplicity is commonplace. And the simplification of complexity is creativity”: this is the philosophy that the Architype workshop adheres to.

      Course of the lesson.

      1. Introductory speech of the teacher.

      Mom’s day, mother day,

      Dress Best,

In the morning, get up early,

      9,0002 Clean up the house,

      Something good

      Give Mom!

      – Guys, the holiday of our mothers is coming soon, March 8th. We have already prepared for it: we learned poems, songs, learned to dance. And what else do you need to think about, what else to do to bring joy to your mother?

There is nothing sweeter than a mother’s smile,

      0007

      Shaky darkness will dispel,

      Bring joy to the heart

      Mom’s smile!

Children: I need to make a present for my mother.

      – That’s right, we need to prepare gifts.

      2. The story of the lilac.

      – There are many beautiful flowers in the world, some bloom in autumn, others in summer, but the most long-awaited ones appear in spring. First, the first snowdrops break through on the thawed patches: fragile and tender. Then other flowers begin to grow, also resistant to the cool season. And at the end of spring, everything begins to bloom and smell fragrant with its aromas.

Lilac is very beautiful and fragrant. It blooms at the end of May. Listen to the story about how the lilac came to us in Russia

      Lilac

Lilac bushes with clusters of fragrant flowers against the background of dark green heart-shaped leaves have been decorating our gardens for a long time. There are cities where there are especially many lilacs. So, in late spring, the gray walls and towers of old Tallinn merge with purple lilac flowers. And further in the north of Europe – in Finland, Norway – lilacs are most of all bred.

One of the legends tells about the appearance of lilac in the Scandinavian countries. Spring, mixing the rays of the sun and the rainbow, began to throw them on the ground. And where the rays fell, flowers bloomed – yellow, orange, red, blue, white. Spring went from south to north, generously scattering colorful rays. When she reached the north, she had only purple ones left. Lilac bushes grew out of them.

The legend of the lilac originated in the northern countries, and one might think that lilacs have always grown only in the north. In fact, lilac comes from Persia. Four hundred years ago, lilac was brought to Vienna, from where it began to spread rapidly throughout Europe.

      N. Verzilin

Children, together with the teacher, look at the flowers in the pictures (daffodils, tulips, dandelions, mother and stepmother, and others), remember the names and their distinctive features.

      3. Physical education session “Spring, red spring”.

      Spring, red spring!

      come, spring, with joy,

      with joy, with joy,

      with great mercy:

      with high flax,

      With deep roots,

      With abundant bread.

      Russian folk song.

Children walk in a circle, holding hands,

      Turn in the opposite direction.

They stop, rise on their toes, stretch their arms up, inhale.

They lower their hands, squat, take a breath.

Holding hands, run in a circle.

      4. Preparation for the upcoming work.

      – Guys, last week we decided to make a lilac branch for our mothers out of paper. Let the time of lilacs not come yet, but I so want to make a miracle on the holiday of March 8 and give a bouquet of lilacs to the most important people in our lives, our mothers, to wish them to be just as beautiful and loved.

      5. Completing the task.

For one inflorescence, cut out 15-20 circles from purple flower paper and one “carrot” from the landscape sheet. From the circle, first fold the skirt for mom (1), then for daughter (2). We round the lower right corner (3) and unfold the workpiece (4). Glue the finished flowers on the “carrot” smeared with glue. The leaves are cut according to the template from the “accordion”.

      1

      6. Summary of the lesson.

      – Let’s remember what we talked about today.

Children: Today we talked about flowers and that Mother’s Day is approaching.

      – Name spring flowers.

Children: narcissus, tulip, lily of the valley.

      – What craft did we do?

      Children: Lilac bouquet.

      – Guys, what will you tell your mother when you give her a lilac?

Children: Let’s congratulate her on the holiday.

        Chapter 30.

The smallest school in Europe. Foreigner in Madeira

Chapter 30. The smallest school in Europe

It is called Escola Internacional da Madeira (EIM), “International School of Madeira”. The only fully bilingual (English and Portuguese) elementary school on the island. (Let me tell you one secret: if you have no plans to stay in Madeira and Portugal forever, then you can agree to relax the requirements for Portuguese and focus on English.) There is also a so-called multilingual school in Madeira, where you can use both Chinese and even to study Russian, but the standards of education existing there categorically did not suit us.

EIM is another matter. This is probably the smallest school in Europe. The building is quite small. The classes are just tiny. And in the whole school, the total number of students is comparable to the size of one class in a general education Russian or British school. The school is run with an iron fist by Thelma Armstrong-Teixeira, who brings a wealth of teaching experience from her native South Africa, where she was born, raised and trained to teach. She teaches English and mathematics, as well as history and geography, biology – for the last three years, though not in very large volumes, but the load on children is already serious, just have time to take the rap.

For all the shortcomings of apartheid, it must be admitted that there was a strong pedagogical tradition in the white community of South Africa. This is not fashionable, not too modern, with an emphasis on discipline and exactingness. Mrs. Armstrong-Teixeira is very, very strict and demanding. But amazingly, the kids love it. Seeing, they rush to hug and talk about their deeds and achievements. But her word is an iron law. And the punishment for the slightest offense distributes cruel – twenty additional (in addition to abundant homework) examples a day! Sobbing…

Children are admitted to the school from the age of four months (cr?che, that is, nursery). Then comes nursery, something like a kindergarten, preparatory classes and, finally, four primary classes – from six to ten years, after which, to our great regret, everything ends. Our young lady’s progress after three years at this school has been phenomenal: not only in terms of the amount of knowledge, but, more importantly, the seriousness of the attitude to study, to work. At some point, wonderful in all respects, the twin sons of the famous football player Dani, who played for the St. Petersburg Zenit and came home to heal the injury received in Russia, studied with her in the class. That’s when it was a “big class”, as many as seven boys and girls! But then Dani recovered and took the twins to cold St. Petersburg, someone else left, and since then only three or four people have studied in the class. For some time there were only two of them left – the young lady and her friend Mafalda. Understandably, such amazing class sizes make learning more like private tutoring. Each child is given great and completely individual attention. The school is private, paid, expensive by local standards – between five and six thousand euros a year, but compared to Britain, these are just seeds. When I tell the Brits about these rates, they can’t believe their ears. Indeed, in Albion, private education costs three to four times more.

So, marveling at the good manners and organization of our young guests, we must take into account the amazing education they receive at the International School. But still, under all this, the main foundation is the family.

Almost all families in the school are complete, single mothers here are still a rare, extraordinary phenomenon. Even if something between adults went wrong, the most important principle is that the child should receive maximum attention from both parents. Ideally, he should not even know that serious problems arose between his parents. Almost everyone has brothers and sisters, grandparents, uncles and aunts… And also godfathers and godmothers… Now in Russia the concept of “godparents” seems to be some kind of anachronism. Meanwhile, how many enthusiastic stories I heard in my childhood from my father and uncle about their godfather . .. In the life of the family, he played an absolutely colossal role, was simply number two after his parents until the moment when, in the mid-thirties, he landed where many in those years fell, and did not return.

Here, in Madeira, and to this day it is so, with the difference that neither real fathers nor godparents disappeared anywhere, even during the era of the Salazar dictatorship, unless they were members of the underground militant organization of the Communist Party or something like that . But there were none in Madeira, and in continental Portugal it was also a rarity.

So that every child feels like a part of a large family in which everyone cares about him.

When a fierce fight for a daughter between an Irish lady and her ex-Portuguese husband began at the International School of Madeira, the whole island was shocked. The drama was even covered in the news on local television. This story was as shocking for the Maderians as the case when a carefully swaddled abandoned baby was found near one of the levadas.

It occurred to me that the national mentality can be studied, among other things, from children’s folklore and from parables and fables that are usually told to children. For example, here is the Maderian ballad “About 37 nails”.

“Once upon a time there was a boy who was distinguished by a quick-tempered character: almost not according to him, he became angry, offended, stamped his feet and offended others. And then one day his father gave him a strange bag. The boy looked in there, thinking that there were sweets or toys. But there were nails. Exactly 37 pieces. “Whenever you’re angry, drive a nail into the fence in our backyard,” my father said. On the first day, the boy drove about ten nails into the fence. On the second day – two times less. On the third – even less. But still the day came when all 37 nails shone with their hats in the fence. Then his father said to him: “At the end of each day, if you manage to restrain yourself and not flare up, pull one nail out of the boards. ” It was a long time before the boy was able to report to his father that all the nails had been pulled out. The father took his son to the fence and showed him the 37 holes left in it. “You see,” he said, “you can regret what happened, but you can’t do anything. The nails can be pulled out, but the holes cannot be patched. They will stay forever. If we hurt people, our relatives or friends, then wounds remain in them that cannot be healed.

Maybe I thought they grow up so calm, reserved and concentrated and know how to value friendship so much because something like that is instilled in them from childhood? Or, on the contrary, do folk art reflect the already established features of national psychology?

Not far from our “Palace of the Palms”, on the corner of Jasmineiro and Avenida do Infante, a luxury apartment building was built for a long time. It was built, according to our ideas, quickly, as well as very clean and tidy, without creating almost any problems for the surrounding residents. Portuguese builders worked there: decorously and sedately, they did not drink alcohol, they did not swear, they worked like bees, with one day off a week. The finishing work took the longest. In addition, the house, as befits Madeira, was equipped with an elegant swimming pool, and then a jacuzzi in each apartment. The team was not very busy at the facility, which is probably why the construction dragged on for more than two years. At lunchtime, builders had a habit of sitting right on the sidewalk, smoking, basking in the sun, and talking lazily, in low voices. Having smoked, they carefully collected cigarette butts behind them and went on to work. I looked after them and thought: firstly, this means that it is not cold at all, you can sit quietly on a stone. Even in December, for example. Second, it’s clean. We got up, dusted ourselves off a little, and there is no dirt visible on the back of the trousers. In front – all sorts of paint stains and so on: construction, after all. But behind – no. In general, the streets of Funchal and other towns and villages are clean and tidy everywhere. Amazing – especially in comparison with London, New York, Paris. The wife says: what’s the matter? They are not Germans and not Scandinavians, after all. Southern people. Temperamental.

Joseph Adams, author of a popular reference book about Madeira in the early 19th century, wrote of the locals that they were “unfailingly polite… when they meet a well-dressed stranger, everyone will definitely take off their hat and be offended if they do not receive the same greeting in return… Among poor people, a sailor who has strayed from his ship, left without money and clothes as a result, can always count on sympathy and support.

Sympathy and support you will receive in Madeira today. And there is still such a strange attitude towards money for today’s world, despite all the difficulties that the Maderians are now experiencing. I have already mentioned taxi drivers who gradually become family friends if you use their services for several years. So: God forbid to offer them a tip – they are offended. From time to time they strive not to take any money for travel. “Well, what are you, I still went in that direction.” And if he decides so, he will rest, you will never persuade him. They are stubborn… They brought a tablet that stopped working to the workshop. The master fiddled about eight minutes, made a diagnosis. The problem turned out to be just a defective wire. He said that, unfortunately, he could not help: he did not have such a wire. Told me where to buy it. But he refused to take money for work. Said, “I didn’t do anything.” The remarkable dentist John Sousa spoke in the same vein. I came to him with a non-standard problem. Having studied it, the doctor came to the conclusion that nothing needs to be done yet. Gave me – in a friendly, cheerful tone – a whole detailed lecture on preventive measures. The lecture dragged on, took up almost the entire period of time usually allotted for the patient … but the doctor also refused to take the money. He said the same phrase: “I didn’t do anything …” And there are many such examples. Are there any exceptions? Of course. Every family has its black sheep. But this is exactly the case when the exceptions prove the rule.

I read in another old book that the Maderian understanding of the queue is different from the common European one. So, I report: this statement remains true even a century and a half later. And in both a good and a not-so-good way.

Here in the cafe-dining room “Saboresh au kilu” suddenly formed a hefty line for payment. Seeing this, the administration sends an employee to help, and she opens a second cash desk. What happens at this moment amazes me every time. Those standing at the end of the line do not take advantage of the fact that they have more freedom to maneuver, and are not the first at the new cash desk, as is always the case in Russia and more and more often in England. No, they are respectfully waiting for the few people who were in front of them in the first line to move into the second. People are looking at each other. Mentally doing not so simple mathematical action. And now the queue has divided into two, approaching as much as possible a fair formula, such that the waiting time is reduced for everyone in more or less the same proportion.

Interestingly, is this also taught in the family since childhood? And after all, the majority in the queue are certainly not from the elite…

For all that, it is considered normal to ask questions to the seller when entering the store, not paying attention to what he is doing, whom he is serving. And the seller for some reason is immediately distracted, answers the questions asked in detail. And the customers at the counter humbly wait, not at all indignant. It is also common when the seller tries to serve two or even three at once. Foreigners are incredibly annoying.

In general, the patience of the Maderians in difficult everyday situations is simply phenomenal: I have never seen such a thing anywhere. For example, on the road. If the driver made a mistake and his car blocked the way – in Russia, in England, in France, anywhere – there would be cursing, a terrible thing, people’s faces would be distorted with angry grimaces, someone would certainly scream, or even assault would be a matter of came. Here, there is nothing of the kind. Everyone endures everything stoically. Or someone will enter the bus, he can’t find a change in his wallet. The driver patiently waits, and with him – the entire bus full to capacity. Not a word, not a sound, not an indignant look. But someone, probably, is in a hurry somewhere … Did everyone remember the ballad about 37 nails from childhood?

But, in a strange way, in some respects the Maderians remain children for life. How else to explain their strange habit of yelling at night under the windows?

“Scream!” – summed up what was happening in the evenings and at night in the courtyard of our young lady, sometimes slightly confused in her four languages.

And indeed, they “shout” in the most terrible way. That is, they talk like that, communicate, without thinking for a second that the acoustics in the condominium are terrible, that because of the open window we have the feeling that they are yelling right above our heads. Oh, how many times they woke us up at night – lost count …

You run out into the yard in your pajamas and start reproaching them, say, por amur di deus, in the name of love of God, what are you doing, two nights, we are sleeping here, or rather trying to sleep, and we have a child here … It should always the same reaction: the offenders are sincerely embarrassed, begin to ardently ask for forgiveness, promise that they will never live again, that it just somehow never occurred to them …

And next time they can easily forget themselves again. The key phrase here is: “It didn’t occur to me…” Exactly!

Our Italian friends believe that the Maderians are almost the opposite of the Mediterranean type.

Again, this has more than just a positive side.

But, says my Irish friend Kim, if you have a Maderian friend, it’s for life. It is not so easy to gain confidence, but if this happens, then that’s it, it’s forever, and the Maderian understands friendship very seriously. If you are invited to the house, then you are already almost a member of the family. Oh, how much my friend Octaviu has been messing with me! He drove around the island, showed, told, introduced interesting people … He also strove to feed at the same time; I resisted as best I could, trying to somehow repay the Maderyan hospitality with Russian hospitality… Somehow I could not resist, I told him: why are you wasting so much time on me, and even gasoline (having formulated this, of course, more politely)? He shrugged his shoulders: I do what I must … Well, that’s it. Friendship in Maderian? Yes, and Pedro and Filip somehow imperceptibly became very close people to us, with whom it is easy, and simple, and fun, and interesting. With whom you can share even the most intimate.

By the way, they do not suffer from leavened (or should I say: passion fruit?) patriotism. The main thing: nowhere to find such grace for children, they believe. For their sake, it is worth enduring local provincialism. But at the same time, the Maderians treat their native island and the islanders critically, with healthy irony, and we heard a lot from them that made us take off our rose-colored glasses …

Since 1931, its campus has grown beyond the original campus buildings – main building, dining hall, school building, East, West and North and South dorms, Earth, Annex (infirmary), and two gatehouses at the entrance to the Oval – to include a chapel/auditorium, indoor riding arena and Gaines Hall, science building, refurbished and expanded dining hall, Heard Sports Center and Huffington Library. Campus and Facilities

The campus is located on 376 acres (1.52 km. 2 ) overlooking the Potomac River (McLean, Virginia) and consists of 34 separate buildings.

      Public Access

There was a lot of controversy in the Madeira school about the use of their land. In 1966, Fairfax County proposed to convert 208 of Madeira’s 376 private acres (1.52 km2). 2 ) to public park land. [5] In 1991, Madeira granted an easement along Georgetown Pike and also allocated 89$000 to build this trail, which will complete the Potomac Heritage Trail without visitors entering the main campus. [6] However, park officials never completed this route. In 2008, the Fairfax County government sought an easement from Madeira near the Potomac River to allow a 100-mile (160 km) loop of hiking trails to be completed as a condition of approval for proposed school expansion plans. This 1.6 km section of trail through Madeira will connect Scotts Run County Park with Great Falls National Park. International Schools in Portugal WithPortugal

If you are planning to immigrate to Portugal with children, one of the very first questions for you will be choosing a school for your child. In one of our previous articles, we have already talked about which schools in Portugal for studying in Russian or Ukrainian. Most of these schools are Sunday schools; weekend schools that provide additional classes for the overall development of the child. If we are talking about a full secondary education, and you do not want to send your child to a Portuguese public school for the first time, then we recommend that you pay attention to international schools in Portugal. What are the international schools in the country, how much do they cost and what is the best school in Portugal? All these questions will be answered in detail in this article.

Why Portugal? Features and cost of private schools in Portugal.

Someone might ask: “What’s the point of sending your child to an international school in Portugal, if it’s better to send him to study in Switzerland or France?” The answer to this question can be found in the summaries of annual statistics published on the International Schools Database website.

Below you can see a list of countries in Europe, sorted by the cost of studying at international schools in these countries for the year. We sorted this list by its median values (Median) and this is what happened. If, for example, the average cost of educating a child in an international school in Zurich is about $28,000, and in London you have to pay an average of $21,000 per academic year, then in Lisbon you will have to pay an average of $11,000, which is almost 2-3 times less than in other European cities.

Add to these savings the good climate, the high standard of living and the safety of Portugal’s cities, and these are exactly the benefits that both your child and you will gain by living and studying in Portugal.

By the way, it’s important to understand that when we talk about international schools in Portugal, we don’t just mean primary and secondary schools. Almost all such institutions in the country have pre-school units, so your child can start attending such an international school in Portugal from a very young age.

In addition, almost all international schools in Portugal have a flexible discount system in case you have 2, 3, 4 or more children. So for each subsequent child you will have to pay less and less, although even without such a system of discounts, the cost of a private Portuguese education continues to be one of the lowest in Europe.

    Rating of Portuguese schools

Every year in Portugal, ratings are published by various publications, where you can easily see which schools are the best in the country. At the same time, private and public schools are analyzed according to the same criteria, namely, according to the criterion of the average score of students.

The most famous is the rating of the Portuguese publication Observador, in which you can easily analyze the best schools in a particular city or region. What is interesting is that the top 50 positions of the best Portuguese schools are occupied exclusively by private schools. For the first time, a public school appears only on the 51st line of the ranking at the end of 2020. Despite the fact that many people speak very positively about public schools in Portugal, there is an indisputable fact – it is the students of private schools who get the highest marks in national exams. And this is another argument in favor of sending the child to a private school.

The best international schools in Portugal

How is the ranking of international schools? Let’s test it based on the same tool from the Portuguese edition of Observador.

On the very first page of the ranking we see the first international school, which can be called the best international school in terms of GPA in Portugal. This school is called Colégio Luso-Francês, it is located in the city of Porto and ranks 13th in the ranking of the best schools in Portugal.

    • School: Colégio Luso-Francês
    • City: Porto
    • Official website: https://lusofrances.pt/

Tuition fees: In the 2021/2022 academic year, in addition to the application fee (30 euros) and the registration fee (250 euros), 10 monthly fees are charged, which can vary from 300 euros (preschool education) to 450 euros (secondary education).

Also, if we continue to search by ranking for “International” or in Portuguese “Internacional”, we will see 4 more international schools in Portugal.

Of these, 2 schools have proven themselves particularly well, namely St. Peter’s International School, which is not ranked 29th in the country and is geographically located next to Setúbal.

    • School: St. Peter’s International School
    • City: Palmela (near Setubal)
    • Official website: https://st-peters-school.com/

Tuition fees: The school website states that they can provide information on the cost of education during a personal visit of the school’s parents. However, it can be assumed that the cost of studying at this school will not differ much from other private international schools that we have indicated as part of this article.

In 34th place in the ranking of Portuguese schools is the international college Colégio Internacional de Vilamoura.

    • School: Colégio Internacional de Vilamoura
    • City: Loule (Algarve region)
    • Official website: https://www.civ.pt/

Tuition: In addition to the registration fee in the region of 250-300 euros, the annual cost of schooling ranges from 4,810 to 11,075 euros per year (depending on the class).

A little lower, already on the 98th line of the rating of schools in the country, there is an international school Nobel – International School Algarve.

    • School: Nobel – International School Algarve
    • City: Lagoa and Almancil (Algarve region)
    • Official website: https://www.nobelalgarve.com/

Tuition fees: In addition to the registration fee of 200 to 750 euros, the annual cost of schooling ranges from 4 to 900 to 12,800 euros per year (depending on the class and campus, because this school has two of them and the prices are very different).

And with a slightly lower GPA, Escola Internacional de Torres Vedras is in 283rd place in the Portuguese school rankings.

    • School: Escola Internacional de Torres Vedras
    • City: Torres Vedras (near Lisbon)
    • Official website: https://www. eitv.pt/

Tuition fees: The school’s website states that they can provide information on the cost of tuition through personal contact. However, it can be assumed that the cost of studying at this school will not differ much from other private international schools in Portugal.

Well, this is the list of the best (by GPA) private international schools in Portugal. But in fact, there are many more international schools in Portugal, which is why in the next part of our article we will give a short list of other schools that, for one reason or another, were not included in the rating of the Portuguese publication Observador.

List of main international schools in Portugal

The choice of a school for your child will depend on many factors: where you live, your budget, what foreign languages should be the main ones for your child, etc. That is why the best option for choosing a school can only be a thorough analysis of each educational institution, and then a personal visit to the school you like. To facilitate your search, we offer you a short list of the main international private schools in various regions of Portugal.

Sending your child to an international school in Portugal is a great idea

Of course, this is a very good idea, given the appropriate financial resources. After all, studying in an international school with a child, there is an opportunity to get an education in accordance with the highest international standards. Most of these schools in Portugal build their program in accordance with the requirements of the IB (International Baccalaureate), which means that if you decide to move in the future, the child will not have problems transferring to a school in a new country.

You or your child may have already decided which country you want to study in, and therefore you can choose a school with a specialized foreign language (for example, English, French or German) to make it easier to enter a university in another country in the future.

Whichever international school you choose for your child, remember that even the most expensive private school in Portugal will cost you much less than similar international schools in other European countries. Add to this a warm climate, a high quality of life and beautiful natural landscapes – and the decision to immigrate to Portugal, including from another European country, will suggest itself.

What is your most vivid impression (or memory) from kindergarten?

    ?

    Previous Entry | Next Entry

Let’s share with each other the brightest memories from OUR kindergarten life?

    I have three.
    1. Acute feeling of loneliness to the point of physical pain, especially during nap time. I remember it very well.
    2. How the teacher put the boy completely naked on the table. I made him stand like that for the whole quiet hour among the beds as a punishment for something, I don’t remember what. And he stood. And we all looked at him.
    3. Mom tells. If she hadn’t told me, I wouldn’t have remembered. It was in the senior group when I was 5 years old.
Such a dialogue has taken place.
    – Mom! And here, during nap time, some boys get out of bed, run around and yell, “Who wants to f*ck? Who wants to f*ck?”
    – So what??? – parents quietly slide down the wall.
    – So what? Whoever wants, he speaks.
    – What are you talking about?
    – Well, I usually don’t want to….

    I hardly remember anything else…

What is your most vivid impression (or memory) of kindergarten?

You can not write a comment on this post, but write in your LiveJournal, and throw the link to me. I would be very interested.)
Yes, and it is useful to remember yourself in order to mentally put yourself in the place of your child, I think …

UPD. Oh guys! Thank you all so much!!! I’m just crying with emotion! Please keep remembering! Insanely interesting!)

“Child development center – kindergarten No. 125 of Vladivostok”

Vladivostok, st. Borodinskaya, 29, tel. 232-63-55

In the kindergarten “Svetlyachok” there are 6 groups, children aged 2-7 are brought up. Each group has a game room, a bedroom, a dressing room. The conditions for children are comfortable, the areas of the rooms are large, bright and warm. Excellent bright play furniture, a lot of toys, teaching aids made by the hands of educators. Good corners of nature.

In kindergarten, children eat at the Firefly cafe. This is a large, beautifully decorated room, where there are many flowers, cages with parrots, a large aquarium with fish. There is a phytobar at the canteen, where children receive juices, cocktails on holidays, and celebrate children’s birthdays.

There is a large sports hall in our garden, where there is a lot of equipment for classes with children. The equipment is bright, colorful, modern, which is very popular with children, and they are happy to work out in the gym.

The Waterpark that lost it’s value

    June 2018 • Family fun

Schlitterbahn, overall is a decently designed park park. Food is somewhat cheaper than that of Worlds and Oceans of Fun is and the lines are way smaller at Schlitterbahn. Although the lines are shorter and food is cheaper I still prefer Worlds and of Fun. The rides at Schlitterbahn are closed most of the time and since the largest slide got closed due to the incident in 2016 there really isn’t too much to do there anymore. The thing I liked the most was the lazy river and how it connects to other places in the park. Overall the park is decently fun but could be a whole lot better. If I was giving my personal recommendation I would buy an Oceans and Worlds of Fun pass because it’s way more fun there and way bigger.

    Aug. 2018 • Family vacation

Waterpark is set up good. Like being able to bring our own food/ drinks in. Lines move pretty fast. Staff is friendly. Just hope they can get more staff so all the attractions can be opened! That was the only thing we didn’t like. We all had a really good time! We will definitely be going back.

It’s a waterpark without any rides

    May 2018 • For two

Well, the rides exist, but the state won’t let you ride them because they’re closed for maintenance/compliance. Imagine a waterpark, now imagine a waterpark with no rides and only a few particularly terrible people there. so much fun! …And the owner is criminally liable for the decapitation of a child. If you must go to a waterpark, just go to Oceans of Fun. It may be on the other side of town, cost a million dollars, but the slides are open. …and there’s an Adult Only swim up bar, which also will cost you several thousand dollars to drown out the swarms of screaming children and terrible parents.

    Schlitterbahn KC

We opened all rides in 2018, although slide towers were delayed due to new requirements imposed related to paperwork. Our colleagues at Oceans of Fun have a great park and it’s worth a visit as well.
There was a horrible tragedy our park in 2016, and the ride on which it occurred was immediately closed and has since been dismantled. Schlitterbahn settled with all parties. We hated it

    July 2018 • Family vacation

We came thinking we’d have an awesome family day. Not the case. Several of the slides were closed. (Later told this was due to staffing issues.) the sign at the bottom of the slide appeared that my youngest son would actually be able to ride it, but then after waiting 45 minutes told at the top he was not tall enough. (Supposedly this was fixed and adjusted to “true to hieghf”) and then the worst of the worst is my oldest son and I ended up with abrasions due to staff not paying attention and allowing too many people through the line. We with the team lead three times during our three hour stay who assured us everything would be taken care of. Being a nurse the “first aid” looked as if she’d never seen blood before so bandaged my own wound and my sons.
The only reason I gave one star was one because I had to, and two when I wrote the Park the manager was quick at responding. However calling corporate office, no return call no email back. I didn’t want free tickets, but was offered free pizza and told the “newer lifegaurds” would be trained.
If you want a water park in KC; spend the money and go to the oceans of fun in the northland. I’ll post pictures however a little graphic. My sons abrasion is fairly deep (hard to see in the picture) and mine was terrible.

    Awesome Day

    Aug. 2018 • Family fun

Interlinking lazy river keeps you from ever leaving the water! Tidal waves and rapids on the lazy river create a fun adventure throughout the park. Rides are varied in speed and height. The waterboard allows for knee boarding experiences at no extra cost. Entire facility was clean. Well supervised by life guards. Definitely a must do for our future trips to KC!

    Half the park isnt open

    June 2018 • For two

Half the park(notably the king kaw) is closed for poorly disclosed reasons. Normally a lack of staff is blamed, which isn’t a viable reason, HIRE MORE(20 guests would pay the wages of the lifeguards for the kaw).

I fully agree with the rumor that schlitterbahn kc will close after 2019, if it even makes it that far.

    Schlitterbahn KC

It was very frustrating for everyone to not have King Kaw open, and unfortunately, despite our efforts to hire, we were unable to get to the staffing levels needed. And it wasn’t a budget reason, we simply did not have enough individuals apply. Rivers are a key feature of the experience and require the most lifeguards, and we reduced prices in recognition that King Kaw was closed.

Short Lines and only a few rides not open 2018 • Family fun

I was hesitant to go because I’d heard a lot of the rides had been closed when people went, but there were only 2 closed. A negative is they don’t post rides that will be open until right before the park opens each day. Park is easy to get around in and you can save a lot of money by bringing in a cooler. Not a lot for small children to ride(especially because one of the child areas was closed). The staff was friendly. We went on a Wednesday, and there were not a lot of people which meant our 8 year old had a blast riding with very little wait. Park was very clean.

    Great Saturday at Schlitterbahn KC

    July 2018 • For two

Check the website/Facebook or call the park to set your expectations for open rides before going. This year, King Kaw has not been open on weekdays, that’s a big deal so unfortunately I gave 4 star because of closed rides (reflects on management issues if u ask me – they should have been ready for 2018 including the KS over zealous inspector) , but today was otherwise awesome and we’ll be back for sure.

We arrived 30 minutes early it was a light line. Arrival staff was friendly, we did a Groupon and it worked fine. Parking is free and they let u take food and drinks into the park, tunes were free, a huge savings. We were able to get a covered picnic table without running.

I’ve noted some negative reviewers seem to want a lot out of the park, perhaps too much. It had the feel of Schlitterbahn TX, home towny, not corporate perfection, staffed by teenagers. Crowds built up throughout the day but never super bad lines. I guess if a person thinks a successful, great water park is huge lines like in New Braunfels then it wasn’t full enough but for us we had a grand ‘ol time tubing around the river rapids all day and riding slides here and there. We got lunch there, didn’t take too long and was delicious.

Staff throughout the park was courteous and friendly.

So… there’s obviously a lot of context to this particular Schlitterbahn location, glad to hear the big elephant in the park will be taken down this year as it looms over everything. Time to move on from all that. I hope the state of KS prosecutors and inspectors take a collective breath and also move forward before they drive this place out of business as there is nothing like it in the region.

Final thoughts – I don’t know what the grand plan was for the park originally, but it felt like the foundation of the park is built, kind of small other then a great river system (worth the price of admission for us) , but is ready for build up of more thrill rides and other types of slide rides. My wife and I both agreed our teenagers might get bored after 3-4 hours and our 6 & 9year olds would have had to stick with the rivers as there wasn’t much they could have ridden otherwise. So… thanks for a great day, we’ll be back and hope the park gets completed eventually.

Beautiful Rose Garden 2020 Jul 2020 t think roses could grow in MO. What a wonderful surprise and delight, a great place to get outside and breathe during Covid-19 not to mention the smell of the roses with so many colors and varieties to delight us all.

Beautiful rose garden (even in October) and beautiful fountain! Also loved the rest of the park with its walking paths and other fountains.

Fragrant roses surround fountain with close parking.

    Oct. 2019

Beautiful park with a lovely rose garden that surrounds a fountain and smells delightful. You can park very close to the rose garden which is nice. The fragrance of the roses is sweet but not overpowering. The fountain and grounds are kept very clean. There were several photo shoots going on during our visit most likely due to the beautiful surroundings. There is plenty of space in the park so it doesn’t seem crowded.

How nice that they preserved this local landmark. I assume that St. Louis regrets abandoning theirs and setting up a pole barn for train travelers.

    Breathtaking!

    Aug. 2019

This is a must see when in Kansas City. The roses were all in bloom and the many assorted colors shimmered in the sunshine. It was a peaceful, soothing spot in the middle of a busy city.Of course, there was a fountain in the middle and it added to the beauty of the area. What a treat!

    Magnificent Garden

    Aug. 2019

The Loose Park Rose Garden is a magnificent cornerstone in the center of the park. Hundreds of varieties of roses are planted there and the garden is well tended. Benches through the circular garden are conveniently located for guests. It is a delightful centerpiece of KC.

    Great park for anybody

    June 2019 • With friends

This is one of my favorite parks to exercise in Kansas City. The outer sidewalk/track is approximately 1.37 miles and is always clean, but it can get crowded as it would be nicer if they would widen the paths. But I always feel safe in this park and there are tons of areas to do lots of things and the surrounding neighborhood is lovely. There is a rose garden that is beautiful to sit in, playground for kids, multiple areas to picnic in, tennis courts, pond to feed the ducks and many areas of grass to do anything you want. This is definitely one of our best parks in the Kansas City area.

We go here every year. We like to get our family pictures taken here. The landscaping is amazing. It’s hard to believe that such a wonderful park is found inside the city.
