Child Care FAQs

The national typical hourly rate in 2022 is $20. 00 per hour for nannies and $17.50 for babysitters. Rates can vary based on the child care provider’s experience, certifications, employment status, and travel expenses. When calculating the cost of child care, you should also account for the number of children they’ll care for and additional responsibilities like household tasks or homework help. Learn more about how to set competitive rates for attracting the best babysitters.

The best way to find child care near you is to post a job detailing your needs on Sittercity, which will be shared with our community of available babysitters and nannies. We’ll notify you when child care providers apply to your job, and from there you can proceed with interviews, background checks, and reference checks so you can find the perfect fit for your family.

You can find experienced and passionate child care providers near you to provide the best care for your child, either in-home or virtually. Child care providers can help families with managing strict schedules, transportation to activities, homework help, last-minute coverage, date nights, and more. Whether you’re looking for full-time, part-time, live-in, or temporary care, you can count on Sittercity for finding passionate and experienced child care providers.

Families find trustworthy child care providers on Sittercity who are passionate about providing safe and enriching care for their children. Many providers report they are First Aid and CPR certified to provide the best care for your family. Babysitters and nannies have the option to complete regular background checks, and you can easily request a recent background check if they don’t have one or it is not recent. Families can also request to see professional references!

Our dedicated team also champions safety across our platform every day. Child care providers go through an identity verification process Berbix when registering an account. Some additional safety measures include Family Watchdog screening, babysitter and nanny reviews, and secure messaging.

Nannies and babysitters share the same primary responsibility of providing safe and enriching care for your child, but there are a few differences between them. Nannies are more commonly associated with regular work, whether full or part-time, offering daily or consistent care to a particular family. There are also several different types of nannies, including au pairs, house managers, doulas, live-in, and overnight nannies.

Babysitters, on the other hand, are typically hired for irregular or occasional work, either full or part-time. If you’re looking for last-minute care for date night, or the occasional few hours after school, a babysitter is a great best option.

Identifying the type and frequency of child care you’ll need is the best way to decide whether a babysitter or nanny is a better fit for your family.

Child care providers on Sittercity love providing enriching experiences for your children, and sharing their passions with them. They’re happy to participate in outdoor activities like sports, or indoor activities like music, baking, tutoring help, and art. Wherever your child’s interests lie, child care providers on Sittercity can engage them in a nurturing way.

Rocker and luxury lover. How Johnny Depp made money and then squandered his fortune0001

Life

05:09, 30 April 2022

9

min.

Jack Sparrow, Willy Wonka, Gellert Grindelwald – Johnny Depp has many bright roles known all over the world. The actor’s path to the highest echelons of Hollywood was full of unexpected twists and turns. He dreamed of becoming a rock star, but made a living selling ballpoint pens. It seemed that the dark times were over, and today Johnny is one of the highest paid actors. But protracted lawsuits with actress Amber Heard ruined his reputation and deprived him of multi-million dollar contracts. “The Secret” tells about the difficult life path of the actor and how his financial condition has changed in recent years.

Johnny Depp was born on June 9, 1963 in Owensboro (Kentucky, USA) and was the youngest of four children. The father of the future actor, John, worked as a civil engineer, and his mother, Betty, worked as a waitress. Conflicts constantly arose between spouses, and children became witnesses of quarrels.

Johnny’s childhood was overshadowed by constant moving. The family moved frequently due to their father’s work, but eventually settled in Florida. For a whole year, John and Betty lived in a motel with their children, as the father of the family could not find a job and buy a house. Due to frequent family problems, by the age of 12, Johnny was addicted to drugs, and three years later his parents divorced, and Betty married the writer Robert Palmer.

Failed rock musician

Like many teenagers, Johnny Depp dreamed of becoming a musician. In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, he said that it was an uncle who played the guitar in church that awakened in him a passion for a musical instrument.

At age 12, Depp finally convinced his mother to buy him an electric guitar for $25, and then he did what he is ashamed of to this day: he stole a book of chords from a store. In a few days, Johnny mastered the guitar and at the age of 13 he became a member of the local “garage” band. Friends played at parties and even in nightclubs, where underage Johnny had to sneak.

At the age of 15, he left school in hopes of becoming a rock star. According to Depp, two weeks later he was knocking the thresholds of the educational institution to continue his studies, but the director advised him to follow his dream. And with the blessing of the director, Johnny began to look for work in the music industry. The young artist played in various small bands, and at the age of 17 he joined the musical group The Kids.

“We have had unrealistic opportunities. We played huge gigs opening for the Ramones, The Pretenders, Iggy Pop, the Stray Cats,” Depp recalled.

Of course, Florida is not a place where young musicians can become famous overnight. And in 1983 the team went to conquer Los Angeles. The path to fame was not easy, and in the City of Angels, the guys quickly ran out of money. Depp and his bandmates had to take on any job to pay for housing and food.

“Me and a couple of guys in the band were selling ink pens over the phone. We promised people a grandfather clock or a trip to Greece for the purchase. Oddly enough, this is my first acting experience. One day I had a character from the soap opera General Hospital stuck in my head, and I called people, introducing myself as the main character Edward Quartermain. A couple of times when I managed to persuade people to buy, they agreed only because they wanted to get a grandfather clock. And when the boss left, I told them: “Listen, do not buy these pens. The watch is made of corkboard. I am a thief, and we are ripping you off,” Johnny shared.

Acting career

In 1983, when 20-year-old Johnny first moved to Los Angeles, he met 25-year-old makeup artist Laurie Ellison (and subsequently married her). According to one version, the girl saw how her lover did not develop a career as a musician, and invited him to try his hand at cinema.

She introduced Johnny to her ex-boyfriend, actor Nicolas Cage, who had already starred in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Rumble Fish and Peggy Sue Got Married. According to another version, Cage saw Depp apply for a job in a video store, and offered the guy his agent’s number. Anyway, Cage’s agent sent Johnny to the casting director for the upcoming A Nightmare on Elm Street. A small role opened the gates to the film industry for the young actor.

In 1985, the musical group Kids disbanded, as did the actor’s marriage to Laurie. Johnny is fully focused on his career. He starred in several television shows and in Oliver Stone’s Platoon, where he played an interpreter. The film received eight Oscar nominations.

Johnny approached his new activity with all seriousness and began to study acting, first at the Loft Studio, and then with a private master. The lessons paid off when, in 1987, he was cast as an undercover cop on the Canadian TV series 21 Jump Street. After the release of the series, Depp woke up as a celebrity and the idol of all teenagers.

In 1990, Depp starred in the musical Cry-Baby, and then got the lead role in Tim Burton’s fantasy film Edward Scissorhands. This picture not only made Johnny an actor of the first magnitude, but also collected more than $54 million. And Johnny himself received about $3 million.

On the set of the film, the actor met Winona Ryder. Young people started an affair, and after 5 months, Johnny proposed to his beloved and got a tattoo on his right arm with the inscription “Winona Forever”. But at 19In 93, the couple broke up, as Ryder’s parents were categorically against this union.

Everything, except for his personal life, turned out well for Depp. He received critical acclaim, increased his popularity, and continued to be an active collaborator with Tim Burton, starring in several more of his films: Ed Wood (1994), Sleepy Hollow (1999) and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005). The last of the films brought the actor about $ 18 million and a nomination for the Golden Globe Award.

However, these films did not bring Johnny dizzying fees. The most profitable project for the actor was Pirates of the Caribbean. The franchise brought him more than $300 million, worldwide popularity and a nomination for an Oscar in 2004 for his role as Jack Sparrow.

In 2005, Johnny received a second Oscar nomination for the lead role in the film Wonderland, and in 2008 a third nomination for the film Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

Johnny Depp’s filmography has many more successful works, including the film The Tourist, where he starred with Angelina Jolie, Alice in Wonderland and the Fantastic Beasts franchise. By the way, the role of the Mad Hatter brought the actor $ 55 million. And for one scene in the third part of Fantastic Beasts, from where he was fired in disgrace, Depp received more than $ 10 million.

Not all critics consider Johnny Depp a brilliant actor. In 2015, he even topped the rating of the most overrated Hollywood actors, compiled by the American magazine Forbes. Reviewers analyzed and came to the conclusion that for the last pictures with Depp’s participation, film studios received only $ 1.2 for every dollar spent on the actor himself. While the Pirates of the Caribbean films have grossed $3.7 billion, Mortdecai, which also stars Johnny Depp, grossed just $47 million on a $60 million budget.0003

Scandal with Amber Heard

Johnny Depp is unlikely to please us in the near future with new movies with his participation. Studios refuse to work with the actor because of his scandalous divorce from actress Amber Heard. Their family squabbles even overshadowed the divorce of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, which was also exaggerated in the press for a long time.

Johnny and Amber got married in February 2015, and in May 2016, the actress filed for divorce, accusing her husband of assault, outbursts of aggression and all mortal sins. Amber shared scary photos with bruises that her expressive husband allegedly left her. The actors divorced, and Amber received $ 7 million as compensation for dropping allegations of domestic violence.

Depp claimed that he had never beaten his wife, but his reputation was already damaged. Every year, the family drama continues to acquire more and more details, and the courts seem to drag on endlessly.

In 2019, Hurd released a column in The Washington Post and again mentioned violence from her ex-husband, and Depp sued the ex-wife for libel and demanded $ 50 million. According to the actor, Amber was the abuser in their couple . In 2020, Depp began legal proceedings with The Sun newspaper, which wrote about him as a man who beat his wife. The court refused to satisfy the claim of the actor. Depp not only lost this “battle”, but also lost his contract with Warner Bros., and, accordingly, his role in the sequel to the film “Fantastic Beasts”.

The litigation between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard has not yet ended. On April 11, another trial began in the United States in order to find out who is actually right and who is wrong. And justice will not be easy – the family life of the spouses was short, but eventful, as in the Brazilian TV series. Clinical psychologist Laurel Anderson, who was Depp and Heard’s family therapist in 2015, spoke at the session. According to the specialist, both actors experienced abuse in childhood, and in their marriage they created a situation of “mutual abuse.”

Depp said that he himself allegedly often became a victim of the aggression of his ex-wife. As an argument, Depp showed a finger injury that he received in 2015 when Amber threw a bottle of vodka at him. Then, turning to the medical facility, Johnny lied that he hit his finger on the door.

“I didn’t want to reveal that it was Miss Heard who threw a bottle of vodka at me, after which my finger was torn off. I didn’t want to give her trouble. I tried to make it as easy as possible for everyone. I didn’t want to drag her into these proceedings, ”the actor commented.

On April 26, as part of the meeting, they listened to the testimony of the police officers who came to Amber and Johnny’s house after the actress reported domestic violence. And the guards of the law did not see signs of a fight on the spot. As part of the meeting, the floor was also given to forensic psychologist Dr. Shannon Curry, who had previously held a 12-hour session with Heard. The psychologist revealed the signs of a hysterical personality disorder in the actress. It is possible that the court will ultimately side with Depp.

Crazy spending

In 2016, Johnny earned $48 million and did not deny himself anything. He loved to live in a big way, for which he later fell into a debt hole. In 2017, every month the actor lowered $200,000 on a private jet and $30,000 on wine. He spent another $300,000 on staff and $150,000 on bodyguards.

Now the actor’s capital is about $100 million (he spent the remaining $650 million).

Real estate

According to his management company, Depp has spent more than $75 million on the purchase and development of 14 residences, including an entire village in France. In February 2021, the estate was put up for sale for $55 million.

In 2004, he bought an entire chain of islands in the Bahamas for $3.6 million, and three years later he bought five separate penthouses for $7.5 million. In 2016, he sold this property for $12.78 million.

At the disposal of the actor there was a farm with a stable in Kentucky, which he bought in 1995 for $950,000. His mother lived here for some time. In 2001, he sold the farm for $1 million, but four years later bought it back for $2 million. In 2016, his mother passed away, and the actor put the farm up for auction for $3 million.

In 2014, Johnny purchased a property in England, namely a luxury mansion in Somerset, Shire. The old house is located on the territory of 330 hectares. At the time of purchase, it was estimated at $ 2.5 million, and the actor invested about $ 5 million more in repairs. True, it is not known whether Johnny owns this mansion now.

Other purchases

Johnny Depp is said to own a $328,000 Rolls Royce Wraith and a red 1959 Corvette roadsterYear of release. Now you can buy one for $ 80,000.

For some time the actor owned a yacht, which he bought for about $ 18 million. The vessel took at least $ 350,000 a month to maintain, and Johnny eventually sold it to writer JK Rowling.

Another $3-5 million Johnny spent on a completely useless thing – a special gun, with which the actor scattered the ashes of his late friend Hunter Thompson.

Some time ago, a Kentucky boy made headlines for donations he dedicated to his late brother. The idea was his own, but he was helped by his mom and many netizens.

At the age of eight, Grayson Brooks had already proven that even small children like him can have big hearts. A young boy recently came up with an emotional way to honor his late brother Wyatt.

Grayson is the oldest child of Destiny Hayes. In addition to him, she welcomed two other children, including his sister, three-year-old Hazel, and the late Wyatt.

Wyatt NEVER CALL HAYES ‘MAMA’

Wyatt was the youngest of Destiny Hayes and Jimmy Brooks’ children, but he was still an infant when he died. Thus, there were many things that he could not do with his family.

His mother was looking forward to getting on the school bus with his brother Grayson, who also loved his little brother. Hayes described Wyatt as “a cute kid who quickly wrapped her around his little little finger.

Wyatt died in 2017 and Hayes never heard him call her “mom”. Over time, she adapted to life without a child.

But on rare occasions, such as when she was preparing the school bag for her other two children, Hayes felt her feelings flare up again. She also said :

“I have a nephew who was born a few weeks after Wyatt, and every time he hits a new milestone, it makes me feel good.”

BRILLIANT IDEA

Wyatt’s departure was an ordeal for those he left behind. They have gone through pain, but are determined to keep the memory of the little boy alive. According to Hayes, one of those who remembered Wyatt very closely was his brother Grayson.

After the tragedy, he reportedly started walking around with a framed photograph of little Wyatt, which he called Bubba. It was rather surprising that Grayson bonded so strongly with his brother, who was only four months old when he passed away from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

When this happened, Grayson was three years old and had been asking about Wyatt for a long time, wanting to know where he had been and when he would return.

As he grew older, Grayson realized that Wyatt was gone forever, and then began to think about how to keep Wyatt’s memory alive. After brainstorming, he came up with a plan to honor his late brother and comfort his mother.

Last month, Grayson delivered about $350 worth of goods to Estes Elementary School in Owensboro, Kentucky. He asked that the stationery be given to the next group of kindergarten students who would be Wyatt’s classmates. Grayson said:

“I made this for my brother who passed away at 4 months old, I wanted to donate supplies to help the whole school.”

Stationery, including writing materials, crayons and markers, was purchased with money donated by Facebook users to a fundraiser started by Grayson’s mother.

He said that he thought about it a lot, and after he told his mother about it, she supported him in every possible way. Her pride in him also increased. In a fundraiser she created, Hayes talked about Wyatt’s death.

She stated that the pain of the tragedy would never subside, and then told how grateful she was that they were able to uncover the reason why babies die of SIDS, which means that no other mother should have to endure that she has.

GRAYSON’S BIG HEART

Grayson’s idea made Hayes proud and happy, and she now hopes they can continue to do something similar for Wyatt in the coming years.

According to Hayes, Grayson wants to help people because at a young age he already realizes what people have to overcome difficulties to make ends meet.

Grayson hand-selected every item they bought with the donation money, and he only chose what he knew his little brother would like. Hayes also mentioned how determined Grayson is to keep his brother’s memory alive. She said:

“Every time he does something fun, he says, ‘Bubba will love it.’

It’s because Grayson thinks Wyatt is smiling from heaven, and who’s to say he’s wrong?

HOW PEOPLE RESPONDED TO GRAYSON

TODAY recently shared Grayson’s story with its Facebook users, prompting a flood of well wishes and praise for the boy. Some of the comments went like this:

“Just such a wonderful and compassionate young man. We need more of him.”

— (@David Johnson) August 7, 2022

“Awesome little guy, so caring. God bless him and his parents, they should have taught him to pray for them and the school (sic).”

— (@Tress Gilliam) August 7, 2022

“I shed a tear. May God bless him. And his brother will be an angel watching over him.”

TIPS ON HOW TO DEAL WITH THE DEATH OF A LOVED ONE

Death is a hard pill to take, especially when it comes to someone close, like family. But here are some tips that might help.

• There are different ways to grieve:

Contrary to what many will say, grief is different for everyone, and no matter how empathetic well-wishers may be, they may never understand the grief that survivors have to live with.

Welcome to Our School

Welcome to Childtime daycare and preschool in Renton, WA! My name is BJ and I am the school director. I have had over 16 years of experience in early childhood education, facilitating opportunities for learning, using our GrowFit program to help our students develop lifelong healthy habits, and providing a safe and nurturing environment.

We offer loving child care for Infants of six weeks through five years. Education has always been a focus of mine from my early days doing research in learning and memory to my current passion, providing a warm, caring, and safe environment for our early learners. The relationship between our school and families is very important to us. We are constantly looking for more opportunities to enable interaction between teachers and parents.

Our curriculum is inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood learning. That means you can expect a homelike environment, curriculum based on student interests and developmental progress, and experience-based learning.

Australia’s answer to the Northern Lights: just as beautiful and all year round

  • Ellie Cobb
  • BBC Travel

Image copyright, Getty Images

It would seem quite obvious: if there is an Aurora Borealis, then there must be an Aurora. However, not everyone knows about the aurora borealis, Aurora Australis. The biggest mystery of the Southern Hemisphere? Anyway, one of the most beautiful…

“Remind me why we’re here,” my husband said, slightly irritated. I promised him a short vacation by the sea, for the first time in five years – without children.

But in reality, it looked like this: pouring rain, a tiny town on the island of Tasmania, small houses huddled together, as if trying to protect themselves from gray ragged waves, and not a single hint of even a single store in the area.

It was an Australian winter and it was terribly cold. I understood my husband’s mood.

We have just arrived in Southport, Australia’s southernmost city, and are staying at a desert campsite that bills itself as “Last stop in Tasmania”. I don’t know what was more in this statement – pride or despondency…

My husband did not yet suspect that I had my own reason, an ulterior motive for coming here. In recent years, I have seen more and more references to Aurora Australis, the southern variant of the northern lights.

In the Northern Hemisphere, from northern Canada to Iceland, it’s par for the course: crowds of tourists come to see the colorful lights dancing in the sky. But few people know that the Southern Hemisphere has its own light show, no less magical, and I was determined to see it.

“I have a feeling this is Australian by birthright. And people just don’t know it,” says Margaret Sonnemann, author of The Radiance Seeker’s Handbook ( Aurora Chaser’s Handbook ) and founder of the Aurora Australis Tasmania Facebook page on the southern phenomenon.

The southern ( Aurora Australis ) and northern ( Aurora Borealis ) auroras can be observed in the so-called auroral zone, which has the form of rings centered on the Earth’s magnetic poles. The glow of the upper layers of the atmosphere occurs when they interact with charged particles of the solar wind, a stream of ionized particles from the solar corona.

As Rakesh Panwar from the Australian Bureau of Meteorology explains, this aurora can be seen not only at high, polar latitudes, but sometimes at middle latitudes – when the solar corona becomes especially active.

While the aurora borealis can be observed on the Australian mainland, it is much better to do it on the island of Tasmania (or New Zealand), where the skies are always clear and much closer to the pole. That is why I dragged my husband 600 km from Melbourne.

Clear skies over Tasmania and New Zealand make them some of the best places to see the Aurora Borealis

I’m not the only one who fell under the spell of these dancing lights in the sky. Sonnemann, an American who moved to Tasmania 32 years ago, told me she got hooked on watching the aurora borealis back in 2005, when she was simply breathtaking from what was happening in the sky above her head.

“There was something magical in the movement of the rays,” she recalls. “Every second everything in the sky changed. It was beautiful and exciting.”

  • “Australia felt our future. ” Hundreds of millions of animals died in the fires here.

Although Sonnemann knew other local aurora watchers, there was no central source of information about when and where to see Aurora Australis.

And she realized that a public address system was needed. Sonnemann created her Facebook page in 2010, mostly with the support of fellow Aurora fans. Now the group has more than 85 thousand members and 10 administrators.

“Photographers quickly ran into our group,” she says.

Bruny Island is located off the southeast coast of the island (and Australian state) of Tasmania in the Tasman Sea. In fact, these are two islands connected by a narrow isthmus

She says that while the aurora is commonly thought of as colorful lights in the sky, in Tasmania you often see it as white – sometimes with just a little colored glow around it. A really big aurora happens when space activity is strong enough.

“You don’t see much color with the naked eye, our eyes are not designed to see color at night,” she explains. But in the photo everything will be seen perfectly.

Sonnemann is so into Aurora Australis that her face lights up when she talks about him. No wonder she was nicknamed “Lady Aurora”.

“One of the advantages of our aurora is that we don’t see it mostly overhead, but on the horizon,” she says, explaining that Tasmania is much farther from the South Pole than many Aurora viewpoints. – from the North.

“This means that our photographers are able to capture a greater variety of colors, as they usually shoot what is on the horizon. If you look at photographs taken in the Northern Hemisphere, the glow is mostly green. When we look horizontally, more colors are visible, almost all colors are red, green, yellow, blue and purple.

“I often say it’s like visible music,” she adds with a smile.

Cape Bruni lighthouse is a favorite spot for those who come here to photograph the aurora. hemisphere, where, because of the summer white nights, this is a winter form of entertainment.

In the Southern Hemisphere – whether you’re in Tasmania, New Zealand, or even some of southern Victoria – you have a real opportunity to see fairy lights in the summer after dark.

And the lights will be as striking as ever, from intense white pillars in the sky to streaks of ethereal greens and reds.

But I seem to have chosen a completely inappropriate weekend – with a gloomy overcast sky and large drops of rain.

A Southporter told us that he often sees the aurora in the summer – straight from his backyard. But not at this time of year. Come when the weather is clear, he told us.

He was right. A gray blanket of clouds hung in the sky, and when it got dark, everything above turned into thick blackness.

However, this was not my only mistake. Sonnemann, whom we met in the morning, said that I was in vain trying to come to the southernmost point of Australia.

“It’s a good idea to just stay away from the big city lights, otherwise you can see the aurora from anywhere in this state,” she said.

“You need nothing to block the sky to the south, neither hills nor trees. In general, all of Tasmania is equally good for this. The main thing is that it is dark enough. You can even watch it from your own porch.”

Although the most common color for the aurora borealis and aurora is green, as in this photo, you have a chance to see a greater variety of colors in Tasmania

Based on all this , the next morning we left the town and went to the island of Bruni, which is actually two islands connected by a narrow isthmus.

For tourists and travelers, the island of Bruny is a real treasure. From the world-famous cheese to the unique white wallabies (marsupial mammals from the kangaroo family), there is much to see and do here, so, I decided, even if we are not destined to see the light music of heaven, we will have a good time on Bruni.

This island is so far from civilization that even without the southern lights, its sky looks magical – with the Milky Way in all its glory and bright stars all over the sky.

We drove from the ferry along the only road past distilleries, breweries and cheese shops. Eucalyptus trees were crowded along the road, and between them from time to time there was a stunning view of the ocean sparkling under the sun.

I booked a place for us with a panoramic view of Cloudy Bay, where sleepy waves crash against the shore and turn into white foam.

A strip of golden sandy beach, hills densely overgrown with forests… All this was extraordinarily beautiful.

Bruny Island has pristine sandy beaches, eucalyptus forests and untouched nature in general

The island is a photographer’s dream, said Ben Kienhuis, manager of Bruny Island Coastal Retreats, showing us the way to our cottage.

And he was right. The whole bay was perfectly visible from the windows of the living room, and nothing blocked the horizon. From here we can see the southern lights, I thought hopefully.

The night sky here is so impressive, the manager says, that the company recently began offering special aurora photography tours, a first they believe in Tasmania.

Touring photographer Luc Sharkey warned us that it’s not easy to catch a good aurora. But tracking, hunting for it is part of the fun.

Sonnemann taught me how to use a variety of apps and weather websites to help beginners navigate their pursuit of the glow.

On them, for example, you can find data on the wind speed, the orientation of the interplanetary magnetic field and the magnitude of the index K (showing the level of perturbation of the Earth’s magnetic field).

All this together gives an idea of the likelihood of auroras. Facebook groups like the one run by Sonnemann are also great places to look for the phenomenon.

Photo caption,

There are many white wallabies living on Bruny

Understanding all this data was not easy, but incredibly exciting and addictive. I found myself constantly looking at the app on my smartphone, hoping that the conditions would change and I would see the southern lights.

“There are never any guarantees,” Sonnemann warned me. “You can never be sure.”

However, despite the apparent elusiveness of the aurora borealis, interest in it has increased remarkably in recent years.

According to Sonnemann, most of the members of her Facebook group are no longer locals and photographers, but tourists from different countries who want to come and see everything with their own eyes. And she is worried that in the event of an influx of travelers, the island may not be able to cope – there is still no necessary infrastructure here.

“When they come from places like Singapore, they are even surprised by the night sky,” she says. “Their life is completely illuminated, they don’t know what a dark sky is, they haven’t seen it. They are afraid to drive in the dark afraid to leave the house when it gets dark. I think it’s terrible. ”

To meet the demand for viewing the Aurora Borealis, Sonnemann is working on a project to create special platforms that can be reached by car or taxi, with explanatory posters and photography tips.

Aurora Australis can be seen all over Tasmania – as long as you don’t obscure the southern horizon

“Even when there’s no aurora – and it doesn’t happen every night – they could watch the sky and see the Milky Way for the first time in their lives,” says Sonnemann. “Even without the aurora, the night sky is beautiful here.”

That night I stayed up for a long time, piercing the sky full of thick clouds with my eyes. The K index showed one, the wind speed was low, which meant that the southern lights were unlikely.

It was terribly cold and I fell asleep next to the fireplace. I woke up at about 2:00 a.m. as if I had smelled something.

I got up and opened the sliding doors. The bay was in front of me. The cold air took my breath away. I looked up. No glow.

But the clouds suddenly parted, and before me opened a bottomless black sky dotted with stars. I stood quietly, listening to the gentle roar of the ocean, stretching beyond the horizon, all the way to the South Pole.

I should have felt some disappointment, but for some reason I didn’t feel it. Perhaps because of the magic of the moment or the beauty of the sky that opened wide.

Whatever it was, I was sure that the southern lights would appear to me sooner or later – when the right time came. In the meantime, I absorbed the loneliness, space and silence of the moment. I knew that it was not in vain that I ended up here, on this island at the end of the world.

How Netflix engages kids and families

It’s useless to try to pinpoint the common theme of the dozens of animated projects that Netflix is working on: there isn’t one. This is the point. Unlike Disney, Pixar, and Illumination, Netflix doesn’t try to give children’s content a certain look or tone.

“We don’t do this on purpose. I asked myself the same question when I first came here. I thought: “We need a brand!”. This is all because I worked at Fox, Disney and DreamWorks. But then I realized that it’s not important to develop a brand because we serve such a wide audience,” says Melissa Cobb, vice president of content for children and families at Netflix.

Netflix is watched by a huge number of children, they are a serious engine of development for any streaming service. 60% of monthly Netflix viewers watch children’s programs. This explains why the company is investing so heavily in this area. According to Loup Ventures, Netflix will spend $1.1 billion on animation this year, or 11% of its annual budget.

This is how the company manages to keep its brand.

Look for content creators with different styles and perspectives

Photo: Netflix

Netflix differs from the competition in that it hires different animators and directors and lets them do their thing. Cobb says they are doing it on purpose. Netflix aims to attract talent “who are confident in what they will do with the company.” This shows that they will do their job well. The main idea is not to come up with a brand, but to allow creators to create an extensive and diverse catalog of content.

Netflix’s pursuit of freedom sometimes means moving in a completely different direction. For example, Pinky Malinky creators Rikke Asbjorn and Chris Garbutt are working on an interactive show about a cat and a dog who wake up one day and find that all humans have disappeared. They go in search of their friends, and viewers can choose for themselves whose adventures to follow – a cat or a dog.

Create content that the whole family will enjoy

Photo: Netflix

If Netflix can interest a child from Cape Town and Minneapolis, the next question is: how does the company manage to get entire families of these children to watch something with them?

The answer is to create content that does more than just entertain children. Today, Netflix is pushing the boundaries and reaching a level of production that matches that of the leading animation studios. Glen Keane is directing Over the Moon, a musical in which a girl builds a rocket to fly to the moon and prove to her dad that the legendary Moon Goddess exists. Sergio Pablos is currently in Madrid directing a 2D film Klaus for the holiday season.

Pablos’ cartoon tells the “story of Santa Claus” – a cranky postman is sent to a Scandinavian town in the 1800s on a mission to start a postal service there. The only thing is that the locals do not like each other and refuse to write letters, so the postman turns to the toy manufacturer and the children for help. “It’s a great, funny and touching story,” says Pablos.

Make Content Easily Accessible

Photo: Netflix

The final challenge is showing kids all the content and getting them to watch it. Since 2011, Netflix has been hard at work making the interface clear and accessible, and neatly grouping content by genre and user preference. The company has even created a system where kids – who can’t read yet – can scroll through images of characters from different cartoons by hovering over a series or movie.

Now Netflix is experimenting with another way to keep kids interested. Now the company plans not only to show the character when the child hovers over the movie, but also to accompany the picture with a short video that explains what kind of character it is and what makes it special.

“We think it’s important to explain to kids who the character is. He’s funny? Interesting? What does he do? He’s a good friend?” says Cameron Johnson, Chief Innovation Officer.

Netflix will start testing the format later this year, though there’s no guarantee it will work. Still, Johnson says it’s a good indicator of “what direction the company is thinking.”

“Imagine that you are five years old again, you have a TV remote control in your hands, and you choose what to watch on Netflix. You wonder: “What can Netflix offer me?”

What answer is Netflix looking for? All.

Recent Review:

When we first visited the school, we met a smiling and laughing woman drying off after she had gotten sprayed while washing freshly picked fruit with the students. This kind and playful staff member turned outto be the Director of the school! What a refreshing first impression!
I am writing this review to share my overwhelming gratitude for everything the owner, administrators, teachers, and other staff are doing for our son, as well as the rest of the children-as well as to highlight the incredible impact this school has made in our lives. While our (3-year-old) son has only been with AAIMS Montessori for a little over one month, I have noticed several significant differences in his demeanor and abilities.
Our freshly 3-year-old son comes home each day and sings us multiple songs he learned in school! He tells us about working in his “journal book” and we get to see photos and videos of the activities he participates in! He is more confident in his own abilities and is requesting less assistance with manageable tasks. His creativity has really increased in play and while doing arts and crafts. This past weekend, he got a yoga mat out to represent a jet runway, then rolled it back up and put it away. I honestly don’t think that clean-up or managing his space would have been on his radar before going to this school! He was so proud that he could clean it up himself and is starting to explore more independence.
He also loves to go to school every day. Our older child struggled intensely with going to school, even though her time there was only 2.5 hours per day. We expected some resistance to this change, since he has never been in childcare outside of our home and has never been left with people he wasn’t already very familiar with-but he has never showed even a glimpse of difficult feelings during this major transition! Our son has never hesitated or expressed anything but positivity about going to AAIMS Montessori. To me, this is huge. It is a testament to the environment they have created….

How can I find a daycare near me in Suwanee, GA?

If you are looking for daycare options near you, start several months in advance of when you need care for your child. Care.com has 174 in Suwanee, GA as of December 2022 and you can filter daycares by distance from Suwanee or your zip code. From there, you can then compare daycare rates, parent reviews, view their specific services, see their hours of operation and contact them through the website for further information or to request an appointment.

What questions should I ask a daycare provider before signing up?

As you visit daycare facilities in Suwanee, GA, you should ask the providers what their hours are so you can be prepared to adjust your schedule for drop-off and pick-up. Ask what items you are responsible for bringing for your child and what items you may be required to provide that will be shared among other children or the daycare staff. Also, make sure to check directly with the business for information about their local licensing and credentials in Suwanee, GA.

How to Set Up a Space Birthday Party

We went for a space party theme because it’s so easy to make, and there are countless ways to bring it to life. Check out below how we set it up for my two-year-old’s birthday party.

Step 1. Grab your Birthday Gifts.

My toddler’s birthday gifts were picked from this toddler toy list. If your two-year-old likes to paint, this list of art supplies also makes great gift ideas.

Step 2. Make a Welcome Sign.

Every party begins with a fun welcome sign! Here, we used our Hape Rocket Ship and Accessories for the front entrance. If you do not already have one, this rocket ship makes a fun birthday gift for many ages.

    Step 3. Make Some Planets.

Every space party needs planets! Remember, simple party decorations don’t have to be perfect! They just have to be fun. The fun doesn’t have to mean complicated. Create the solar system with balloons and a paper honeycomb ball for the sun. All super simple ways to add excitement to your two-year-old’s birthday party.

Here we have the sun, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. We all learned about the planets and identified the best color for each one. We even added a multicolored ribbon for Saturn’s rings.

Step 4. Decorate the Birthday Table.

I wanted to keep the table decorations simple yet still in the space theme. So I grabbed some budget-friendly items that got my creativity going!

Step 5. Put Books on the Table.

Books are a fantastic way to brighten the birthday table and have something to read for years to come. So we went for it!

Step 6. Get in Some Party Food.

We had traditional cupcakes for everyone to enjoy, and we also created this simple constellation party snack.

Step 7. Every Birthday Needs a Party Shirt.

Think about what your child can wear for many days once the party is over. Do they enjoy space? Then get something for them to remember the day!

Why I Chose a Simple Birthday Party

Birthday parties for young children can be a chance to slow down and enjoy time together. Sure, I love a good party.

In fact, before having children, parties were majorly my jam. (oh, the stories to tell.) But now that I have three children, five and under, birthday parties for a two-year-old have become pretty low-key.

Why? For one, a house of five is constantly being pulled in many directions. Sometimes, we need a good excuse to slow down, gather the most important people, and celebrate with a simple party.

Even better? Imagine a two-year-old birthday party with ZERO party favors! Yes, please! Read why celebrations are important.

How to prepare the first birthday: a step-by-step action plan

Many parents want to celebrate their first birthday in an original way, so that both the baby and the guests would like the holiday. Definitely, the approach to preparing and holding such a celebration can be radically different.

Some people just try to observe the traditions and customs associated with the anniversary of the baby, while others like the idea of themed parties with original paraphernalia, cool treats and fun entertainment.

For those who decide to organize a grandiose first birthday of a child, we offer a detailed plan of preparation for the event. It can be adjusted to suit your ideas, but the general principle will help you not to miss any little things that can later upset your parents.

    Contents

First birthday: 2 months before the holiday

Yes, yes, exactly 2 months before the start of preparations.

Someone leaves the proposed items in the plan to the last moment and eventually faces insoluble problems that cannot be solved a couple of days before the holiday.

    • Determine the date of the holiday.

It is customary to set the date of the holiday exactly on the day when the baby was born.

But if it falls on a working day, you can move the celebration to the next weekend.

According to folk beliefs, birthdays are not celebrated in advance.

Therefore, even if the date falls on a Monday, you should not move the celebration to the previous Sunday.

    • Make a guest list.

It is advisable to coordinate with the guests the date of the holiday and the possibility of their presence at the celebration.

Perhaps someone is planning a business trip or personal business for the date you have chosen.

Be sure to specify how many children will be with adults.

This information will influence the entire further process of preparing for the holiday.

    • Decide on the location of the celebration.

If you have planned to spend your baby’s first birthday at home, start collecting ideas for decorating the room, the table.

When the decision was made in favor of a restaurant, cafe, children’s entertainment center, call the selected organizations and make a reservation for a specific date.

Believe me, if the date falls on the season of weddings, graduations in kindergartens, schools, it will be problematic to find a place in the last days.

    • Order animators, photo or video shooting.

It is better to agree with the organizers of the holidays in advance so that there is time to agree on all the nuances.

If you decide to undertake such activities, find out where you can rent the right equipment.

Child 1 year old: 1.5 months before the celebration

Time rushes inexorably, and there is less and less left for serious preparation.

Moreover, mothers who usually take care of such things are distracted by household chores and caring for the baby.

Therefore, we do not put it off for later, but every day we fulfill one item from the proposed plan:

    • Decide on the theme of the holiday.

It is the chosen theme that will help determine further actions related to decorating the room, gifts and outfits.

And let someone think that at 1 year old a child is not so important whether he is dressed as a bee or a sailor.

You can choose a really unusual, unhackneyed theme that will emphasize the love of parents for the baby.

    • We buy or order an outfit for a child.

Definitely, there will be no problems with buying just a beautiful dress or costume for a baby. But if you want to dress up your princess in the outfit of the bee Mai or the little mermaid, and the boy as a cowboy or a sea robber, you will have to think about how to make such an outfit or where you can buy it, order it.

If you order via the Internet, then the delivery time may take a month and a half. Consider the pitfalls of ordering via the Internet: suddenly the size doesn’t fit or you simply don’t like the outfit when you put it on your baby.

    • We make a wish list, decide on a gift for the baby from the parents.

The gift list will make it easier for your relatives and friends to choose presents.

We will not talk about the uniformity of gifts or simply their uselessness. Of course, it is foolish to expect that the cost of donated items will justify the cost of preparing for the holiday. But to “order” the necessary crumbs, according to parents, gifts are worth it.

It is not bad to coordinate gifts with close relatives, for example, with grandparents, aunts, uncles.

After all, they can give a rather expensive thing as a gift.

Don’t forget about the gift from parents. After all, a birthday itself is not a gift, even if the “annual family budget” went to it.

    • Making a plan of the event

Try to describe every minute how the holiday will go.

For example, at 14:00 – the beginning of the holiday, meeting guests, 14:30 – presentation of gifts, …..16:00 – games, contests, … .., 18:30 – photo session.

This does not mean that guests will have to strictly adhere to your plan and throw a half-eaten cake at 4:00 pm in order to urgently participate in the proposed entertainment.

But thanks to this plan, you will be able to figure out how much time you have for games, watching slideshows, and how much for toast and snacks.

    • Deciding on competitions, entertainment

Each competition, game, fun requires a certain, and sometimes serious preparation.

Therefore, let’s start by simply writing a list of what entertainment we plan to hold and what attributes will be required for this.

    • Find and save patterns for decoration.

If the theme is defined, it will be much easier to find suitable templates.

Write a list of what kind of decorations will be used to decorate the room, on the streets.

How will you decorate the dishes, how will you decorate the candy bar, will you use streamers and the number “1”.

Getting ready for the first birthday: a month before the holiday

There are a little more than 4 weeks left until the “X” day, and this is not so much if you make most of the paraphernalia with your own hands.

According to some mothers, even 5 weeks were not enough for them to do everything.

It is not bad to involve assistants in the process or to distribute work among friends.

Why not entrust your younger sister with making garlands, caps from already printed templates, or your older brother – to build a three-dimensional figure “1” or make a slide show from selected photos.

The next two weeks will be dedicated to the preparation of decorations and merchandise for competitions.

In order not to forget anything, let’s add these items to the plan:

    • We select a baby photo for a slide show or collage.
    • We print out all prepared templates.
    • We start making paraphernalia.
    • We draw a wall newspaper or congratulatory posters.
    • We make award certificates, diplomas, medals for participation in competitions.

Definitely, you can order or purchase all the jewelry, but you shouldn’t put it off either.

    • We order or make our own invitation cards for guests.

Be sure to indicate the date, time and place of the holiday in the invitation.

You can attach a list of invitations and dress code requirements to the invitation card.

Baby is 1 year old: 2 weeks before the event

It’s time to take care of treats and gifts for guests.

    • Make a menu.

Find the right meals for both adults and children. Be sure to write what you fill the candy bar with.

Talk to parents about allergies in children.

Take into account not only hot dishes and snacks, but also drinks, both cooling and hot drinks.

It would be nice to have a grocery list.

    • We order a cake, gingerbread.

Anniversary cake, of course, you can bake yourself.

But sweets that are made professionally, taking into account the chosen theme and with inscriptions, will look much more interesting.

    • We check the availability of dishes, tablecloths, napkins.

It is necessary not only to check whether the necessary dishes are at home in the required quantity, but also to think about how the serving will fit into the theme of the holiday.

You may need to purchase disposable cups, drink bottles, sweets holders.

    • Ordering balloons.

If the decoration of the room includes compositions of balloons, it’s time to order them from a specialized organization.

    • We buy holiday paraphernalia.

Various trumpets, ordinary balloons, ready-made props for contests, other elements of festive decor will have to be purchased.

    • We prepare musical accompaniment.

Useful fun cuts for competitions that can be recorded as audio tracks.

It would be nice to get a CD with children’s songs. If you are planning karaoke, find the appropriate recordings on the discs.

    • We are looking for helpers.

Ask friends and family who can help with cleaning, cooking and decorating.

There is a lot of work to be done. So don’t hesitate to ask for help.

    • We confirm orders.

We call the organizers, restaurant, animators, photographer to confirm the application, adjust the time, menu, and make the necessary payments.

    • We make an appointment for a haircut, manicure.

In the pre-holiday bustle, you can really forget about this important point.

And on the last day it will be problematic to look for a free master.

One year old child: 1 week before the holiday

If all of the above items were completed on time, there will be no rush in the last week.

You can think of outfits for mom and dad, as well as adjust the work that was missed.

Go through the list again. All of a sudden, they forgot something. We still have to complete a few items:

    • We are updating the list of guests.

There is still time to adjust the menu and script if there are unexpected changes to the guest list.

    • Preparing presents for guests.

Thanking guests for participating in the holidays has become a sign of good manners.

Such gifts will not only express your gratitude, but will also remind you of a good time.

Ideas for such gifts for guests can be found in the article: Seasonal gifts for guests.

    • We make advance purchases.

A week before the holiday, you can buy canned food, non-perishable food, drinks, alcohol.

The first birthday of a child: 2-3 days left until 1 year old

    The most emotionally intense days.

The approach of the holiday is already felt in the air. The heart is solemn and exciting.

After all, this is the first holiday for babies and mothers inevitably worry about how the child will react to such an event.

But we leave all the worries and move on according to the plan:

    • We check the readiness of the details.

If you have prepared a list in advance of what you want to see at the holiday and how you will decorate everything, it will not be difficult to check the readiness of paraphernalia, props, gifts.

We collect all decor elements in one place so that we don’t waste time looking for them at the last moment.

    • We upload photo albums, wish books, CDs.

Relatives look at photos of the baby with pleasure, as well as albums where parents recorded all the stages of the first year.

Therefore, do not deprive relatives and friends of this pleasure.

Take them out of the cabinets in advance so that you don’t have to look for them at the last moment or in front of guests.

    • Bringing beauty.

We don’t forget about ourselves and set aside a few hours to visit the hairdresser and get a manicure.

We check all the outfits for the baby, mom and dad.

    • We make purchases of products according to the list, blanks.

Think about what meals you can prepare ahead of time.

Perhaps there are treats on the list that require marinating or allow you to make certain preparations.

This will unload you on the last day.

    Tomorrow is the 1st birthday

Today is the final touches of preparation.

That’s why we don’t waste our time on trifles, on things we didn’t have time for, couldn’t do, missed.

No time left for sanding. We cover only the important remaining steps.

    • House cleaning.

It is advisable to entrust this stage to dad or sisters, brothers.

Believe me, they will do a great job with surface cleaning even without female guidance.

Of course, if you have not planned to generalize the house on the eve of your birthday.

    • We collect orders.

If you ordered a cake, gingerbread, collage, balls or other props, you need to pick them up and bring them home or to a restaurant on that very day.

    • Cooking treats.

We bake a cake, if there is no custom-made pastry in the plan, we also prepare salads without dressing them with sauces, marinate meat, arrange sweets in flowerpots, and prepare soft drinks.

    • We check the charging and readiness of equipment.

Charge your camera and camera as well as phones.

It would be nice if there were spare batteries for such vehicles.

We check the performance of DVD, laptop, karaoke. Don’t leave it for tomorrow.

And in case of unforeseen breakdowns or malfunctions, you can still find a replacement.

    • We decorate the room.

It is advisable to leave this stage for the time when the child is put to bed.

Let such a holiday be a real surprise for him.

    Happy first birthday

And now the holiday has come. After waking up the baby, congratulate him on his birthday.

You can even give a present, a toy or a bunch of helium balloons.

But do not forget that parents are waiting for the last stages of preparation for the 1st Birthday.

It is advisable to share duties on this day and invite close friends to help.

    • Cooking hot dishes and salads.

Finishing the preparation of treats for guests, dressing salads, preparing meat or fish dishes, decorating sandwiches, snacks.

Arrange dishes in flowerpots, salad bowls, cups and be sure to decorate with prepared toppers.

    • We are finishing the preparation of the premises, yard, table, candy bar.

This work can be done by assistants or ideological inspirers.

Moreover, men’s help is needed to set up the table, benches, and hang garlands. But it is better to do the serving yourself or entrust the lady to whom you can entrust such an important process.

Everything is ready for the holiday. We dress up the baby and meet guests.

    Happy birthday!

Have fun from the bottom of your heart and don’t think about the fact that you didn’t manage to do something and suddenly something will not be to the liking of the guests. But if you think that your duties are completely exhausted on this, then you are deeply mistaken. After all, not only will parents have to control the entire process, but there is still cleaning ahead.

Parents rights in public schools: 15 rights parents have in public schools

Parents’ Rights In Education – Home

    What We Stand For

PARENTS’ RIGHTS IN EDUCATION is committed to valuing students, empowering parents and supporting communities to secure great educations for public school children in America. A tax-deductible non-profit organization established in 2011, PRIE has inspired parents all over the nation and beyond to restore parents’ rights in education.

PRIE welcomes all students, families, and community members who care about scholastic success for K-12 public school students.

Though PRIE families come from all different backgrounds and from across the political spectrum, we are all united by our love of learning and the possibilities for success in life available to all students through scholarship.

    Parents’ Have Legal Rights

Parents have always had legal rights, upheld by five Supreme Court decisions clearly stating parents have the right to direct the education of their children. The only thing new about parental rights today, is a seemingly coordinated effort playing out in headlines, to usurp and undermine the role of family within our communities.

PRIE strives for the return of community values properly represented and reflected in school policies, without the current trend of coercion and reprisal as concerns are voiced. Public school boards were created to reflect the values of their community, and to defend and represent the people, providing a bridge between policy makers and taxpaying stakeholders. PRIE believes families are the most important stakeholders. Parents’ voices matter!

Academics – School is for School, All Day!

PRIE’s mission is to ensure that public schools are safe environments for all students, inspiring and uniting all students as scholars. Parents want their children learning all day long.

Public schools today have strayed from academics, removing art, drama, and other humanities, as well as access to practical life skills, including introductions to trades. Parents expect their children to attend school to learn academics, not be politically activated. Uniting students with the focus on academics is job #1 in schools. We oppose labeling anyone, especially children, as that divides them at a time when an environment of acceptance is critical to their development.

    School Board

School board members are elected officials who represent the community and parents of students. It is the responsibility of the school board to know exactly what is being taught. PRIE wants to restore the relationship of accountability of school boards to parents. Those parental rights have been circumvented by school boards, who are often pressured by outside interests such as superintendents, teachers unions, and other political groups.

    Medical Treatments and Counseling

PRIE protects the rights of parents to be involved in medical decisions of their minor children. Schools should not facilitate medical treatments or procedures without written permission by parents or guardians.

    Everyone’s Opinion Matters

Parents Rights in Education stands with everyone’s right to tolerance and respect. Public schools are for everyone. Political bias cannot be tolerated. One sided political ideologies are often promoted and presented as truth, without discussion of other viewpoints. Reports of discrimination are shocking. Students have been disciplined and even expelled for representing opposing views.

Rallying Cry of ‘Parents’ Rights’ Threatens Public Education

As kids return to school, the focus on math, science, and reading has been sidelined by campaigns mounted in the name of “parents’ rights.” Advocates are demanding that books be banned from curricula and school libraries, targeting teachers and administrators based on viewpoints, and fighting for control of education boards. There is no question that parents deserve a say in shaping their children’s educations; they have moral and legal responsibility for their children, and the freedom to make fundamental decisions for their families. But the rallying cry of “parents’ rights” is being wielded to do far more than give parents their rightful voice. It is turning public schools into political battlegrounds, fracturing communities, and diverting time and energy away from teaching and learning.

I have two children, a 2022 public school graduate and an incoming high school sophomore. I have opinions on what happens in the classroom and I have made myself heard. When my son was uncomfortable being asked to sing religious songs for an elementary school holiday show, we objected to the music teacher. During Covid, I was alarmed by how much in-person learning my kids were missing and registered my views vociferously with school leaders.

But the current parents’ rights movement goes well beyond the usual channels of dialogue between families and schools—parent-teacher conferences, PTA meetings, and calls to the principal. The movement is an organized, nationwide effort waged by advocacy groups, including Moms for Liberty, the Parental Rights Foundation, and No Left Turn in Education. Their aim is to activate parents to contest what is taught in the classroom, what books are available to students, and the professional authority of teachers, administrators, and librarians to carry out their work. This campaign goes well beyond a judicious effort to prompt reconsideration of controversial aspects of certain school curricula or questions of the age-appropriateness of certain materials and narratives. Rather, its methods center on censorship and are chilling speech in classrooms across the country.

    More from TIME

In Alpine, Utah, in August, 52 books, including Judy Blume’s Forever and Jodi Picoult’s Nineteen Minutes, were pulled from school library shelves after an “internal audit” initiated by the school board determined that they contained “sensitive material” and lacked “literary merit.” After an outcry, the district pulled back slightly, limiting access to the targeted books to students whose parents “opt-in” and making them available to their kids. In Florida, Missouri, Georgia, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and other states, campaigns have spurred the passage of new laws to limit the availability of books in schools, sometimes under penalty of steep fines for teachers or punishments for librarians. PEN America, the organization I lead, has documented more than 2,500 book removals in the nine months between July 2021 and June 2022 in our new report.

The accelerating pace of book bans across the country might suggest that such measures are popular. But surveys show that upwards of 70% of Americans, including both Democrats and Republicans, oppose these bans; a 2022 Harris poll revealed just 12% of respondents favor banning books on “divisive topics.” In the name of vindicating their “rights,” parents with special interests are pursuing tactics that the overwhelming majority of parents and citizens reject.

The origins of the parental-rights movement reveal why its new focus on restricting school curricula and reading lists is so distorted and counterproductive. The driving force behind the Parental Rights Foundation, Michael P. Farris, was an architect of the homeschooling movement, advocating for parents who wished to educate their children privately, at home. Homeschooling won adherents in the 1970s and ’80s as court rulings, including in a 1986 Tennessee case in which Farris was an attorney, rejected parents’ efforts to get certain books – including Macbeth – removed from the curriculum on the grounds that they offended families’ religious beliefs. When these litigants failed to enlist the support of courts to impose their religious preferences in public school classrooms, Farris and his allies shifted tactics, seeking to be “left alone by the government” to educate their children as they saw fit.

Read More: The Fight Over What Kids Learn

The new efforts of the past year represent a return to Farris’s original approach. In 2007, Farris launched ParentalRights.org, a group that is now at the forefront of mobilizing parents against what its website describes as “’expert’ agents of the state,” namely teachers, librarians, and principals. ParentalRights.org’s current President, Will Estrada, has celebrated the movement’s rising influence, saying: “We’ve been speaking into the void,” whereas now, “suddenly everyone cares about parental rights.”

ParentalRights.org played a key organizing role in passing “Parents’ Bill of Rights” laws in Florida (2021) and Georgia (2022), which impose heavy administrative burdens on teachers, make it easier for individual parents to challenge curricular materials for all students in a school district, and target LGBTQ+ affirming practices. Many similar bills have been proposed in other states, and may well become law next year.

Perhaps more significantly, the parental rights rhetoric championed by Farris has become a staple of some conservative attacks on public education. At a conference of the conservative Moms for Liberty in July, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis spoke about the importance of parents being able to challenge the books available at schools. The conference included a session on “Gender Ideology in Our Schools. ” A movement that for years styled sought to prevent the government from controlling how they educated their own children now seeks to decree what entire student bodies and school districts can and cannot learn and read. The rhetoric of parents’ rights has morphed from a movement aimed at constraining the power of government over education to one that is mobilizing politicians and legislatures to extend the heavy hand of the government into the classroom.

PEN America’s most recent report on book bans documented how groups organizing under the banner of parental rights curate and publicize lists of books that they view as “indoctrination,” present those lists to district officials, and then administrators remove the challenged books from school shelves. Established processes for reviewing challenged books objectively to determine if concerns are founded are swept aside as books are banned wholesale. The report found that proposed or enacted legislation as well as political pressure from lawmakers played a direct role in over 1100 bans across the country, or at least 40 percent of the bans. Spontaneous, sweeping book bans have become an alarming new norm, in which titles are removed at the slightest sign of complaint from parents or lawmakers.

As stakeholders in the school system and simply as citizens, parents should participate in deciding how schools are run. Their voices deserve to be heard alongside the expert judgment of principals, teachers, and librarians. But to use legislation and mandates to declare certain stories and ideas off-limits violates the compact underpinning public education. Parents who opt for public schools, rather than private academies or homeschooling, are signing up for a system designed to serve entire communities and general interests; they are pooling their resources with other families to raise future generations. It is one thing to believe that parents have the right to forego regular schooling in favor of imparting an individual belief system to children at home; it is quite another to insist that public school curricula and libraries be remade to match those predilections.

These tactics also risk denying and defeating children’s own sense of educational and intellectual agency. Efforts by parents to dictate what books their teens read and subjects they study stand in the way of allowing children to develop the autonomy and judgment they will need in adulthood. Schools should breed critical thinking such that no book or lesson has the power to indoctrinate a worldview. A major purpose of a library, a broad curriculum, and of the protection of free speech itself is the notion that exposure to the panoply of available ideas and narratives is what enables us to form and test our own opinions and beliefs.

The same tensions provoking these battles are also roiling society more broadly. Social and generational shifts in thinking about racial justice, sexual orientation, and gender identity have stoked concerns in some quarters about how marriages, families, and society at large may be changing in unrecognizable, irreversible ways. The impulse of parents to shield their children from what seem like alien social forces and values is age-old. The challenge is compounded in an era in which traditional geographic boundaries that demarcated communities are eroded by online platforms that make traditional controls on what children see, hear and know virtually impossible to enforce. Some parents who find themselves raising children in an information ecosystem run amok have sought to more aggressively police the arenas they can control, training their sights on the public school classroom and library.

Self-proclaimed parents’ rights organizations play on those fears. They have turned their backs on time-honored modes of dialogue and partnership between parents and schools, stoking the belief that the threats they perceive demand government intrusion. In some communities, frustration over pandemic school closures and learning loss has bred resentment and distrust of administrators and teachers, fueling confrontational approaches. The American Federation of Teachers has reported a precipitous jump in the number of educators quitting their jobs over the last year. Meanwhile, children, who suffered learning loss and mental health challenges during the pandemic, find themselves in school environments wracked by tension, where their own rights and interests are often an afterthought.

In an era of intensifying polarization and fragmentation, public schools are among the few unifying institutions with the potential to help solder together a diverse rising generation of Americans ready and equipped to live together, solve problems and help build a better nation. If parents are worried about the books their children may find in school, they can speak to a teacher or librarian, and—even more importantly—engage with their child about the values and stories they wish to emphasize. The phrase “parents’ rights” may have a nice ring to it, but the agenda now afoot in its name should sound alarms for all those who care about the future of public education.

Correction, September 20: The original version of this story misstated Michael Farris’s role in a 1986 lawsuit. He was an attorney, not the plaintiff.

The rights and obligations of parents in the field of education

Laws regulating the rights and obligations of parents at school

The rights of parents in education in the Russian Federation are regulated by the Constitution, the Family Code, which contains the basic rights and Russian Federation”, which regulates the rights of parents as legal representatives of children in the exercise by the latter of their rights, and other federal laws. In addition, some provisions may be in by-laws. So, schools and other educational organizations can issue their own local acts, which students and parents must follow.

Let’s take a closer look at the main legal sources that describe the rights and obligations of parents of students.

    Constitution

The Constitution of the Russian Federation establishes general provisions on education that are valid throughout the country. Article 43 is devoted to this.

Section 1. Everyone has the right to education.

Clause 2. General availability and free of charge of pre-school, basic general and secondary vocational education in state or municipal educational institutions and enterprises are guaranteed.

Clause 3. Everyone has the right to receive higher education free of charge on a competitive basis in a state or municipal educational institution and at an enterprise.

Section 4. Basic general education is compulsory. Parents or persons replacing them ensure that children receive basic general education.

Clause 5. The Russian Federation establishes federal state educational standards, supports various forms of education and self-education.

    <>

    What does it mean

The Constitution recognizes the right to education as natural and inalienable among other human rights and freedoms. Education can be obtained free of charge on a competitive basis – even in universities. The Constitution notes that the child must master at least 9 classes of the school curriculum. It is the responsibility of parents to raise and educate their children to ensure this.

Federal state educational standards, which are mentioned in the fifth paragraph, are a set of mandatory requirements for education at various levels – from kindergartens to higher educational institutions. They can be compared with the standards in sports or GOSTs for products. They write textbooks and manuals, determine how much time to devote to a particular subject, decide how to conduct certification and what tasks will be on the exam. In other words, the Standards are the foundation of the educational process.

    <>

    Family Code

The Family Code has article 63, which is called “The rights and obligations of parents in the upbringing and education of children.” It contains two fundamental points:

Point 1. Parents have the right and duty to raise their children.

Parents are responsible for the upbringing and development of their children. They are obliged to take care of the health, physical, mental, spiritual and moral development of their children. Parents have a preferential right to the education and upbringing of their children over all other persons.

Section 2. Parents are required to ensure that their children receive a general education.

Parents have the right to choose an educational organization, forms of education for children and forms of their education, taking into account the opinion of children before they receive basic general education.

    What does it mean

As can be seen from the Family Code, the rights and obligations of parents in the field of education imply freedom of choice: they can independently decide how and where their children will study. The same document also describes the responsibility of parents for the upbringing and education of children.

Law “On Education in the Russian Federation”

This Federal Law describes the rights of parents of minors in the field of education in the fourth chapter. The main text of the law is devoted to the rights of the students themselves, but here is what is said about parents and their responsibility.

Responsibilities of parents in the upbringing and education of children

According to Article 44, parents are obliged to “lay the foundation for the physical, moral and intellectual development of the child’s personality”, as well as to ensure that children receive a general education. Authorities and educational organizations are called upon to help parents.

Obligation to comply with the rules

Also, according to this article, parents are obliged to comply with the internal regulations of the organization that carries out educational activities, and the requirements of local regulations that establish the mode of study of students. The duties of parents also include respect for the honor and dignity of employees of an educational institution and other students.

The right of parents of schoolchildren to choose the form of education

The law, like the Family Code, allows parents to choose the forms of education for children, including family education: they can “give the child preschool, primary general, basic general, secondary general education in the family” . 1 to 9class, this form of education is called family, and in 10-11 – self-education.

At the same time, parents, taking into account the opinion of the child, have the right to return from home to full-time education at any time.

The right of parents to receive information at school

Also, Article 44 gives parents the right to familiarize themselves with the charter of the educational organization and all educational and program documentation, as well as request a license for educational activities and a certificate of accreditation, if they are not published on the website. Parents should be notified of any examinations (such as psychological) that are carried out on schoolchildren, and receive consent or refusal from them. Parents have the right to get acquainted with the content of the educational course, methods of education and upbringing, technologies, as well as with the grades of their children.

The right of parents to participate in school management

According to the Federal Law “On Education in the Russian Federation”, the rights of parents in the field of education include the right to participate in school life, but only in accordance with internal regulations.

The right to protect the interests of the child

Parents can defend the rights of the student by methods that do not contradict the norms of law and morality.

What to do if a child’s rights in education are violated

According to Article 45 of the Law “On Education in the Russian Federation”, in case of violation of the rights of the child, parents have the right:

  • use other methods of protection of rights and legitimate interests not prohibited by the legislation of the Russian Federation.
  • The Commission for Settlement of Disputes between Participants of Educational Relations is created in the organization carrying out educational activities, from an equal number of representatives of adult students, parents (legal representatives) of underage students, employees of the organization carrying out educational activities.
Federal Law “On Education in the Russian Federation”

Unfortunately, schoolchildren’s rights are often violated. A typical situation: a student was not allowed to attend a lesson due to being late or not wearing a school uniform. Most likely, both cases are indeed violations of the local normative act of the school, but the teacher does not have the right to punish them by not allowing them to attend classes. If the student was not admitted to the lesson, then the parents can write a complaint to the school principal, to the education department with a request for a disciplinary investigation, to the prosecutor’s office.

Children are often involved in the so-called subbotniks – general cleaning of the classroom, school building, territory. But Article 34 of the Federal Law “On Education in the Russian Federation” states: “It is prohibited to engage students without their consent and minor students without the consent of their parents (legal representatives) in work not provided for by the educational program.” If the parent did not give consent, then he has the right to write a complaint addressed to the director.

    <

    >

Sometimes the rights of parents and children to family education are violated when the school refuses to enroll a homeschooler. By law, any licensed and accredited school is required to accept a student in a family form of education, if this does not contradict its local acts. In practice, this is sometimes violated. Of course, you can apply to another school, but this is not always possible. If the educational institution is the only one in the entire area (town, city) or you are interested in attaching to a particular school, ask the director for a written refusal indicating the reason.

‍For this document and to request that the school’s bylaws be brought into line with federal law, please contact your district department of education or the department of education in your area. After all, all educational institutions must obey the Law “On Education”, and it clearly states the right to study in a family and take external examinations (Articles 17 and 34, respectively).

    Summary

The rights and obligations of parents in education, as well as the students themselves, are regulated by the Constitution of the Russian Federation, the Family Code, the Federal Law “On Education in the Russian Federation” and local acts of educational organizations.

Parents have the right to choose the form of education for their child. In Russia, you can get an education outside of school.

If the rights of the child and parents are violated at school, you can write a complaint to the director, contact the commission for settling disputes between participants in educational relations or the prosecutor’s office.

what to demand from the school and kindergarten – Moscow 04.02.2015

    04 February 2015, 18:31

    Society

    Photo: M24.ru

Not all parents of schoolchildren and kindergarteners know that they have not only duties, but also rights. The Law “On Education” gives them a number of powers. M24.ru found out what rights parents have and what they are entitled to by law.

    School and kindergarten

The rights of parents of schoolchildren and kindergarteners are approximately identical. Here the point is not in a particular educational institution, but in the age of the students – they are minors.

    Photo: M24.ru

According to the City Duma deputy, chairman of the commission on education Anton Molev, there are only nuances associated with enrollment in kindergarten, stay and certain duties of parents. Differences can only be at the senior level, where the child acts as an independent subject and partly assumes certain obligations.

Moreover, now the kindergarten is no longer an independent structure, but a pre-school department of a large school, therefore, in fact, parents, enrolling their child in a kindergarten, enter into legal relations with a large complex. These relationships continue throughout the time the child is studying: preschool, then primary school, until graduation from school.

What you need to know first of all

First of all, parents need to know that they have the right to choose where their child will study: be it a public school or a private one, a lyceum or a gymnasium. At the same time, they can choose between traditional education within the walls of the school or at home.

As a rule, the child goes to a school that is closer to home. But it’s important to know that this is not required. You can choose any school you like for your child, and they can refuse you only if there are no free places in the educational institution of your choice.

    Photo: M24. ru

Upon admission to an educational institution, parents are required to familiarize themselves with the charter, provide a license and a certificate of accreditation. Here we note that this information should not only be open to you, it must be provided to you. You can also view the curriculum, call schedules and classes.

According to the law, only with the consent of the parents, additional classes and extensions are opened. Parents can agree to conduct psychological tests and medical examinations or refuse, as well as be present at the announcement of the results.

Can a child be involved in labor

Your child cannot be involved in work that is not provided for by the educational program. According to Anton Molev, if children are involved in such work, then this is the subject of claims against the school. But there is a fine line here. Elements of the educational process that require the preparation of an office or assembly hall, for example, for a festive event, are completely legal.

“If you need to clean something, decorate it as part of an educational program, then involving a child in this activity is absolutely legal and fits into the educational goals of the school,” the deputy says.

Besides, there is a nuance here, he says. “In some institutions, there is a cleaning of the class by agreement with the parents or due to the fact that this is prescribed in the charter of the organization and is part of the child’s duty that he performs. Such a format is possible, but, I emphasize, only with the consent of the parents,” Molev added.

    Photo: M24.ru

When a child can be left to study in the second year

    knowledge.
But if according to all objective indicators, such as independent diagnostics or additional test work, the child really does not have time, then the school, as a student who has not mastered the program, has the right to leave him for the second year. But they do not have the right to exclude a child from school.

“According to existing laws, a child cannot be expelled from school. He may be offered to change the profile of education, taking into account if he does not succeed in a given profile, but nothing more,” said the chairman of the education commission.

Who is responsible for the health of the child

Another important point is that while the child is at school, she is responsible for his health, and in particular, the official who, in accordance with the order, is responsible for the child at a particular moment . It can be a teacher, a class teacher, a teacher of additional classes or a course.

    Photo: M24.ru

“For example, if something happened at a lesson or recess, but on the school grounds, the educational institution is responsible. In addition, if the children went to a museum, on an excursion or any other event, an order is written, which must indicate the accompanying persons, and in particular the leader who is responsible for the life and health of children during the events. Full responsibility lies with the school,” Molev said, adding that each case must be considered separately .

Can your child be questioned during investigations

In cases of incidents that require investigation, your minor child may not be questioned. Any actions of a search character – everything related to official information, for example, interviewing witnesses, is allowed only in the presence of parents or legal representatives.

Are parents obligated to pay for school expenses

All illegal fundraising is against the law. This does not apply to voluntary fundraising by the parent committee for some event or holiday. But this is not a school fundraiser, but an initiative of parents that is not related to the activities of the educational institution and the provision of the educational process. If there are paid services in an educational institution, then they must be spelled out in the Charter.

Abusing a student’s personality and dignity

Your child is not allowed to be abused. To criticize, to insult, to lie, to punish, even worse, to raise a hand – all this is prohibited by law.

    Photo: M24.ru

According to Anton Molev, any action of a teacher is regulated by issues of pedagogical ethics and will soon begin to be regulated by the requirements fixed in the teacher’s professional standard and approved by the Ministry of Labor. Everything that carries an insult to the personality and dignity of a student is not compatible with either teaching ethics or the profession, and is the basis for conducting a specific investigation and demanding adequate actions from the teacher, and steps from the administration to prevent such behavior of the teacher.

“This problem has been very painful in Russia in recent years. In a number of cases, the education system is faced not with a simple idea of what is possible or impossible, but with where the line of the educational process is, and where is insult and humiliation of the dignity of the student. Decisions on this matter should not be taken on the basis of the personal subjective vision of a parent, teacher or school director,” the deputy said.

    Governing councils

At the beginning of the 2000s, Russian schools began to have governing councils, which include teachers, older students, parents and members of the public. With the help of the council, they can participate in the management of the school and propose or challenge changes to its operation.

Federal law does not require school public authorities to operate under a single scheme. Each school can think for itself how often to hold meetings, what issues to discuss at meetings and how to implement the decisions of the body.

The Board distributes school funds, sets the schedule of classes, including the length of the school week. The body approves the school development program, resolves issues related to nutrition, uniforms, safety and health of children. The council also determines the profiles of teaching in high school and selects textbooks from among those approved by the Ministry of Education.
