Our Approach to EducationEarly Foundations® for Your Early Learner While your child is very young, every learning moment counts! That’s why our child care programs put education first—even for the tiniest babies—because every adorable coo, crawl, and creation is proof that they’re ready for more than just daycare.
Instead of pulling an existing curriculum off the shelf, we have a dedicated Education team that builds (and refines) our own research-based curriculum to meet the needs of your little learner. They’ve knit together the best parts of leading educational philosophies to make one standout approach you won’t find anywhere but KinderCare. It’s called Early Foundations®.
All About Early Foundations Early Foundations takes a whole-child approach to early education, covering six key developmental domains:
Cognitive refers to the process of learning, reasoning and problem-solving, and the development of age-appropriate skills in math, science, and the study of the world around us.
Language and Literacy is all about verbal and non-verbal communication, plus the early skills needed to read and write!
Physical, Motor, and Wellness includes physical health, self-care skills, nutrition, fine- and gross-motor skills, and use of the five senses.
Social-Emotional skills include understanding and controlling emotions, developing empathy, building relationships, appreciating human diversity, and gaining self-confidence.
Executive Function is the ability to control impulses, build memory skills, and practice problem solving.
Creative Expression refers to how children express themselves through music, movement, play, and more.
What does DEI mean for kids in our classrooms and centers?
Respecting all kinds of families, and fostering a safe, welcoming community is foundational to who we are. In big cities and small towns, families come to us from every walk of life. When you join us, we’re committed to valuing the experiences and traditions you bring with you and honoring them within our community. We do this by:
Using classroom materials that reflect diverse identities.
Creating accessible and equitable spaces, made possible with the support of our Inclusion Services team.
Educating children to help them recognize and speak out against unfairness, injustice, and prejudice.
Providing support and other accommodations for children with varying needs and abilities.

Day of family, love and fidelity: Smolensk State University connects hearts
“My wife said she would not let me near her until she realized that I was the one. It sounded like a challenge to me.”
History of Zhora and Ulyana Hovhannisyan 2012 and 2014 graduation Faculty of Philology 10 years together
I studied journalism, and my wife at the Faculty of Foreign Languages. Different buildings, I had to overcome the distance from the old building to the new one in order to see each other for a couple of minutes. By the way, the relationship never interfered with studies. We have always been careful in relationships. Initially, the wife said that she would not let me reach her at arm’s length until she realized that I was the one for her. For me it became a challenge. I sought her and this was the signal that she is the very girl with whom I want to live my whole life. I graduated from the university two years earlier, so we waited for Ulyana to complete her studies and immediately after her graduation we played a wedding. It was the most correct and balanced decision. Very soon we will celebrate 8 years of marriage, next year our daughter will go to school. You know, the most important thing in healthy family relationships, of course, is to hear each other, sometimes give in and help each other.
“We went to the Crimean invasion together. She didn’t know yet that I had my eye on her”
History of Evgeniy Gnedkov and Vasilina Lysova Evgeny – Faculty of History and Law Vasilina – Faculty of Economics and Management 2016 and 2020 year of graduation 6 years together 6
I saw Vasilina at an event of the trade union committee, which I myself organized. Honestly, it was love at first sight! Sometimes relationships pushed study into the background, but we coped, helped each other, found common activities. Once we went to the sea, it was the “Crimean invasion”. Then Vasilina did not yet suspect that I laid eyes on her. At some point, her friend needed a lighter to burn the rope. Vasilina told me that if I find a lighter, she will dance with me. As you can imagine, I found the lighter that day. Since then, it all started. The most important thing in a relationship is to hear each other.
“The plan was just to spend the summer with one of the college hotties!”
History of Alexey Pisarev and Victoria Shpakova Alexey – Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, Victoria – Faculty of History and Law 2014 and 2017 year of graduation 9020 years together 9020 20 years together
We knew Lyosha in absentia, studied together at the same school, but fate brought us together only at Smolensk State University – we met at a trade union event in honor of Russia Day. I can’t say that this was love at first sight, but we liked each other quite strongly. At that time, I was the chairman of FIPchik, and he was the main guitarist of the Physics and Mathematics. It was not difficult to combine relations with studies, but sometimes even very much with the chairmanship. At some moments, I could not prioritize correctly, there were a million different events, trips, acquaintances, and there was not always enough strength and emotions for my soulmate. Lesha’s patience played a big role here. He was waiting for me! He finally conquered me when he won the “Live Sound” nomination at “Student Spring” in order to go to the “Crimean Invasion” together in the summer. Every day I am more and more convinced that I made the right choice in that September 2013. And the most important thing in a relationship is the right priorities!
“We tried not to show that we were together, but everyone understood how we felt for each other”
History of Mikhail and Inna Kozinets Faculty of Sociology 2017 and 2019 graduation 7 years together

Testimonials
Mr & Mrs Jones: We Care for All Family Daycare has been instrumental in helping my son. The daycare staff were instrumental in getting him through some major developmental milestones, including potty training and helping with developing his social skills. My husband and I were pleased with the fact he was able to get one on one with his daycare teacher. At four years old, my son now knows how to read and has done the Pre-K content more than once. I have to say a big thanks to Ms. Shirnet and her team. If you are looking for a home away from home, for your child. I would highly recommend the services of the daycare.
Ms Hedge:
Mrs. Shirnet, thank you so much. When I drop my daughter Jillian off each day, I am completely at ease because I know she is being cared for as if she were one of your own. For that peace of mind, I cannot thank you and your staff enough.
Judine: Miss Shirnet, Miss Nicket , Aunt Dor ,and the rest of staff. I just want to let you know how much my husband Gregory and I appreciate the excellent job you have done over the past 10 months while my 2-year-old daughter Jillian has been attending your home daycare center. Jillian has really thrived in your home center, thanks to your nurturing and creativity. She always looks forward to seeing you and all of the other happy children. Even though it’s difficult to be away from her while we are working, we have peace of mind in knowing that she is in such good hands during those times. Miss Shirnet I remembered that first day I called to check in on her and you mentioned you guys were having a devotion, that was the icing on the cake for me. Any place that teaches my child about God that’s where I want my child to be, the very first word I heard my child spell was Bible. We were so amazed when after in your day care for 2 months she knew her colors was singing her ABC’s for Santa at the mall :). We love you guys and you guys will not only be a friend to us but family😀. Ps: I know our little fire rocket drive you guys up the wall at times thanks for not charging us more for her lol .

What is self-care?

Know YourselfPractices how to

Don’t confuse self-care with selfishness. The point is not that we think only about our needs, but that, only by taking care of ourselves, we will be able to give attention and energy to loved ones.
What is self-care?
Self-care can be considered any activity through which we consciously invest energy, time, money in our mental, emotional and physical health. In theory, everything is simple, but in practice we often miss a lot. Proper self-care is essential to maintaining a good mood and reducing anxiety. It is also important so that we can properly build relationships with ourselves and others.
What is not self-care?
Perhaps it is even more important to understand what is not self-care. If we have to force ourselves to do something and we do not get joy from it, this activity can no longer be considered self-care. According to clinical psychologist Agnes Wainman, “Self-care is what recharges us, it shouldn’t take energy away.”
Taking care of yourself is the key to balance in life
Where to start? Here are three golden rules:
• Start simple – sleep, relaxation, pleasant hobbies, going to the doctor. Over time, you will find a rhythm that suits you and understand in what form self-care is most suitable for you personally.
• Self-care is only something we plan on purpose, not something that happens on its own. It is always our conscious choice. If you are planning something, add it to your schedule, tell others about it to solidify your intention. Actively look for opportunities to invest energy in yourself.
• I often stress the importance of mindfulness when talking to clients. In other words, if you do not see something as taking care of yourself, then you will not get the corresponding effect. Be aware of what you are doing, why you are doing it, how you feel about it and what result you get in the end.
Only by taking care of ourselves will we be able to give attention and energy to loved ones
What you can do for yourself:
• Write down everything you don’t like or don’t want to do. For example: do not check email late at night and at night, do not go to events and parties that you do not like, do not answer calls during lunch and dinner.
• Eat a healthy and balanced diet.
• Get enough sleep. An adult needs 7-8 hours of sleep per day.
• Exercise or exercise. Many do not know this, but physical activity benefits our emotional health, not just physical. It increases serotonin levels, which in turn improves mood and energy. Keeping in mind the rules of self-care, choose the type of physical activity that you enjoy.
• Do not put off the necessary preventive examinations and visits to the doctor.
• Do relaxation exercises and/or meditate. You can do this at any time of the day.
• Spend enough time with loved ones.
• Do something every day to relax, whether it’s a short walk or 30 minutes of quiet time.
• Do something nice for yourself every day: go to the movies, cook your favorite meal, arrange a meeting with friends.
• Look for opportunities to laugh.
Make a 15-day self-care schedule and compare how you feel before and after. And remember, as with everything else in life, taking good care of yourself comes with experience.

Anti-stress PSYECO Listen to your body
“All these recommendations seem so simple,” writes 37-year-old Nadezhda, one of the readers of Psychologies. – Stretch before getting out of bed, breathe properly, prepare yourself a bath and arrange a meditation session in it. But for me it is as unrealistic as climbing Everest. I guess deep down I just don’t believe that all this can change my life. For some reason, some people are able to learn to do well for themselves, while others are doomed to read advice, not finding the strength to apply it.
Why, realizing that a caring, careful attitude to oneself is the basis of physical and emotional well-being, why do many of us openly neglect our body, forget about it, or even openly act to its detriment?
We ‘listen to mom and dad’
The English language has the concept of routine – a series of regular repetitive actions, it is used in relation to both daily hygiene and rituals of applying cosmetics (beauty routine). The Russian word “routine” is related to it – only in our language it has a clearly negative connotation, as a reflection of something tedious, pedantic, boring.
“In practice, self-care looks like a certain learned sequence of actions, a habit to perform them,” says Olga Dolgopolova, a gestalt therapist. This skill is instilled in childhood. For those whose dad did exercises in the morning, and mom applied cream every evening in front of the mirror, self-care will more likely seem like a natural thing. Others will have to master this science anew.”
If the example of parents gives us a model of behavior, then their view of ourselves allows us to develop a benevolent attitude towards our own body.
“Self-perception is formed through the words, gestures and attitudes learned in childhood,” explains French psychotherapist Michel Freud. “If this experience has been satisfactory, we will be able to create a healthy body image and a positive self-image.
In other cases, the relationship to the body will be more complex and may manifest itself in many ways: poor nutrition, overexertion, unhealthy lifestyle, etc. To these inputs are added the positive or negative ideas brought by our education. All this determines our behavior.
Not daring to spend time on ourselves, feeling guilty, considering being a waste of time, associating rest with laziness – such beliefs, conscious or not, make us deaf to our own needs, prevent us from treating ourselves well.
“I’m not worth it”
This is especially true of women: “I’m going to have to take this time/money away from my family/child”. Often we not only (rightly) equate self-care with pleasure, but (wrongly) see selfishness in this activity.
“It will be easier for such a woman to take care of others than of herself — this gives her greater inner satisfaction,” states Olga Dolgopolova. “Most likely, so did her mother or grandmother. And she will pass this baton to the next generation – her child, whom she cares so much about.
But if she learns to recognize and satisfy her needs, to fulfill her desires, it will be much easier for her to teach this to her children – and thereby help them become happy. A woman has a choice: to continue this form of suffering from dissatisfaction with herself and life, or stop, pay attention to her needs and needs.
Taking care of yourself does not mean giving priority only to your own interests – contrary to the interests of other people. “A person needs others in order to fully feel alive, existing,” says French psychiatrist and psychotherapist Robert Neuburger. “That is why we often pay attention to ourselves not for our own sake, but depending on the way other people look at us. To keep your belonging to them.
If a person feels unimportant, if he doubts his worth and does not find a place for himself, self-care loses all meaning.
“After the divorce, I felt terrible – homely, uninteresting,” recalls 44-year-old Marina. – At that time, taking care of myself for me meant at least reaching the hairdresser so that my 12-year-old daughter, against all odds, had a positive example before her eyes. And it was for her then that I painted my lips.
“I take care of myself”
“The generally accepted expression “take care of yourself” in its true meaning implies a caring, understanding attitude towards yourself,” says Olga Dolgopolova. – But we often replace it with another – “take care of yourself”, that is, rationally, by an effort of will, build yourself a kind of “front part”, which often hides not caring for yourself. When someone says “I have to take care of myself”, there is nothing about “I want” in it.
“Masks, massages, yoga — when do all these yogas work?! – in the words of 36-year-old Evelina, condemnation and envy sound at the same time. – I run a recruiting agency, a team of 20 people, I have two children and really do not have time to cherish myself!
When my girlfriends were pampering themselves, as women’s magazines prescribe, I worked hard on my diploma in the USA. Needless to say, aromatherapy foam baths were far from my number one priority! Maybe today I would like to give myself a rest, learn to relax and care for my body, but life with its habits has already developed.
Almost everyone has excuses to openly neglect themselves. But the commonplace “I don’t have time” most often hides other, deeply rooted beliefs: “I have no right to please myself,” “I don’t deserve such expenses,” “All this will not make me happier.” And each of them contains aggression directed at oneself, a depressive state, or all the same unconscious messages that are passed down from generation to generation.
29-year-old Laura appreciated the extent of her inner tension on the day she agreed to be massaged by her vacation friend. “We sunbathed by the pool: the sun, the scents of flowers, the gentle breeze, and two minutes later I burst into tears quite unexpectedly! I don’t know how to explain it, but all this was somehow too much for me – too tender, too affectionate, this has never happened in my life!
Respect your body
To learn how to truly care for it, you should first start thinking about it, advises the famous French psychoanalyst Jean-David Nazio.
“We have two possibilities to exist in our own body,” explains Jean-David Nazio. – Either forgetting about it (I identify with it, I think that I am my body), or thinking about it (I consider my body to be my most valuable asset, I say to myself: I have a body). In other words, perceiving ourselves and our body as something unified, we are not able to split in two in order to begin to treat it as an object of care and careful care. On the contrary, if we are aware that we have the body as a subject that has the power to prolong or terminate our life, we treat it with all the respect that it rightfully deserves.
We are afraid to upset the balance
Such a reaction is not surprising: for a person who surrounds himself with an emotionally rigid shell, tenderness, signs of attention, affectionate touches do not just seem strange – they threaten his inner balance. Afraid of incurring the “judgment” of relatives behind us or undermining the defense strategies that have helped us build our identity and life, we “button up” to continue treating ourselves the same way.
“Caring for oneself can be painful or even impossible if one unconsciously perceives it as a kind of violation,” says Michel Freud. – As an opportunity to do what your parents did not allow: to please yourself, to spend time on yourself, to listen to yourself. Taking this step is not easy, it requires overcoming guilt in order to move beyond the repetitive pattern.
“Of course, it is much easier for those who accept and love themselves to take sincere care of themselves,” concludes Olga Dolgopolova. “But the opposite is also true: by gradually mastering the simple gestures that make up the science of caring for ourselves, we more easily agree to accept ourselves as we are and begin to treat ourselves much better. Only this path will allow us not to collapse in the endless use of ourselves, but to gently restore the connection between us and our body, and therefore ourselves.”
5 keys to change
Only by moving forward, step by step, can you learn to truly take care of yourself. Several therapeutic techniques offered by the Gestalt therapist Olga Dolgopolova.
Don’t go overboard. Write on a piece of paper three phrases, starting with the words “I want”, draw a line and write “I must” three times as well. Think about how the first phrases differ from the second and how “should” could be transformed into “want”. Perhaps some of your nutrition, figure, and beauty goals are too burdensome for you and that is why they are difficult to achieve. Torturing yourself also means “to be too demanding of yourself.”
Be aware of your movements. While making the simplest gestures – getting dressed, washing your face, applying cream – deliberately slow down the rhythm and pay attention to what sensations these movements give you. By acting mechanically, we forget about the body and increasingly tend to neglect it.
Make time for pleasure. A day a week or an hour a day in your schedule is worth “booking” for yourself. Use this time only according to your own taste – in active action or idleness. A cup of tea, an hour of reading under a cozy blanket, or a sweet siesta – while devoting time to yourself, continue to note your emotions and thoughts, including those that are not entirely pleasant: feelings of guilt, tension, inability to focus on pleasure.
Find a company. You can create your own well-being society, find like-minded people. Running, yoga, fitness, sauna, swimming pool or dancing – doing any bodily practices together or in a group is much more effective, because it gives a constant feeling of support. And, by the way, it helps to maintain the regularity of classes.
Praise yourself . But not for the “right things” for the benefit of others, but for the manifestation of care, for any sign of attention that you give yourself. Being good to ourselves is not easy for most of us, and therefore each of these small actions becomes a huge step towards inner freedom.

Senior: I came to CK during the pandemic. It obviously was not a traditional experience, however, comparatively, the school’s response to the pandemic in ensuring the best possible education was provided to their students was definitely exceptional. With the amazingly breathtaking campus, CK has the facilities and resources like no other high school that students have the full advantage of utilizing. Students had the opportunity to return to campus for in-person learning a lot sooner the other schools due to the spacing available. Now attending CK in a post-pandemic time, I can fully enjoy all that the school has to offer…and trust me, they’ve got lots!. .. Read 261 reviews

Senior: The community that I belong to is the student body of Novi High School (NHS.) I would define this community by the high standards that students are held to. NHS is the lone high school in Novi, the 31.29 square miles suburb of Detroit. I am also part of the minority ethnicity student body at NHS and a student of the 2023 graduating class. At Novi the minority ethnicity groups are almost the majority. The diverse student body in Novi schools and the school’s competitive nature create my ideal learning environment. NHS has an unspoken rule of taking a rigorous schedule, leading clubs, attend extracurricular, and put ourselves under high pressure. The standards at NHS are high, but I believe the students rise to the occasion. We have a sense that our hard work makes a difference. Although competitive, I have found a diverse group of friends and support, and teachers that have challenged and prepared me for college…. Read 494 reviews

There are many activities to do outside of school as well. This goes along with sports, robotics, theater/acting and all kinds of other enjoyable events offered here. Lunch is provided each and everyday and the food is great. Learning is not rushed so you can be sure to understand everything that you are taught. There are several different electives to choose from. Also, Liggett includes the whole family. They host events that anybody can join in on. Sometimes there are events to introduce new families. Parent: After a few months of online schooling and many tears, we were desperate to find an in-person alternative to the anxiety inducing situation we were in. Our 9 year old son and almost 5 year old daughter have been attending the lower school since January and we are extremely pleased and feel so fortunate to have landed there. Our sensitive son’s anxiety level has been lowered significantly, and he really responds to the learning style there. He is thrilled to be learning cursive and German and knitting, and also seems to really appreciate the extra outdoor time and learning about nature and Native American stories in addition to his times tables and long division. Our nearly 5 year old daughter’s imagination is put to great use every day and she has also become quite the little finger knitter! The environment is nurturing and thoughtful. Freshman: I absolutely love Academy of the Sacred Heart! It is a small community and it offers so many opportunities for students to volunteer in the community. We take annual mission trips across the world that exposes us the many people, cultures and traditions. I love the block schedule of classes. It is preparing me for college. The school offers a great way of how technology is integrated into our curriculum. Our teachers care about our education and they ensure that we get the most out of their classes. They make themselves available to all students. I would love for the school to be exposed to a more diverse student population and I believe that the school is striving towards that goal. There are many opportunities that we serve in the community by participating in our bi-weekly service appointments. I have had the opportunity to work in soup kitchens where I am feeding the hungry. Serving m community is a great aspiration for me and I love the opportunity…. Read 64 reviews

Freshman: At the current moment I’m a freshman with my home school in P-CEP (Plymouth-Canton Educational Park) being Canton. For this campus having almost 7,000 people in total it does a really good job keeping up with the chaos some inconsiderate students can cause. Not only that, but the diversity here is unbelievable; I used to go to a school in Livonia and it didn’t have nearly a third of what P-CEP, including Canton, has. Plus all of the teachers I’ve had so far have been absolutely amazing and very understanding! They also have a larger variety of electives than I thought possible in a high school, including their own radio station. Overall the campus is great and I would recommend it, despite having to walk between three different school buildings to get to my classes…. Read 398 reviews

“We are now true Americans” The story of a Muscovite who moved to Michigan and lived in the USA for half her life: People: From life: Lenta.ru
Moving to another country at a young age means not only getting more opportunities for assimilation and in order to successfully settle in a new place. This is also a test, because you have to leave your parents and friends. Among those who nevertheless decided and did not regret – Muscovite Maria. As part of a series of materials about compatriots who moved abroad, she told Lente.ru why, having lived half her life in the United States, she is unlikely to return to Russia.
American Dream
In 1999 I graduated from one of the Moscow special schools with in-depth study of foreign languages. Where to go? I decided to try my luck in two directions at once: not only to take exams at a Moscow university, but also to try to send documents to a higher educational institution in the States. I chose the University of Michigan.
As a result, I entered a university in my homeland, but a positive response also came from overseas. I thought it over and decided to go to America. I chose the direction “Finance”. Initially, the plan was to unlearn and return to work in Russia, but life decreed otherwise.
When I arrived, I settled (and now live) in the city where the university is located – Ann Arbor. She lived with friends, then rented an apartment. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree and found a job. My employer gave me a work visa. My profession is a financial analyst. I successfully received a green card, and then citizenship, on the basis of employment for hire.
In my last year I met my future husband, he is also from Russia, but he studied at a different faculty and now works as a programmer. Together we bought a house. We have a five year old daughter.
Expat fiefdom
The population of Ann Arbor is about 120 thousand people. This is a very international, multicultural city, because it is a student city. Accordingly, everyone here has long been accustomed to foreigners. In general, the city is very liberal, the attitude is good towards everyone, including sexual minorities (so no homophobes here).
Russians are also loved, especially teachers: they know that students with quality knowledge come from Russia. Previously, there was even an international exchange program between the physics and mathematics departments of the University of Michigan and Moscow State University, but then Moscow University abandoned it, because almost none of the Russian students returned home.
There are especially a lot of programmers and engineers among the visitors – here are the Google office, the Toyota development center. In general, there are many highly skilled workers from other countries in the state, since Detroit has many different auto industries.
Few people live in Detroit itself, but there are many small towns around it, smoothly passing one into another, and you can build a nest there for every taste: there are communities (cottage villages) for white-collar workers, blue-collar workers, as well as where mostly African Americans live. Yes, everything is pretty segregated. Our neighborhood, for example, is dominated by whites, and there are only two or three little African Americans in my daughter’s class. This, believe me, is very little for America.

Mortgages for life
It’s no secret that most people in America prefer houses rather than apartments, especially family people. In Ann Arbor, the range of real estate prices is very large, but the average price is about 225 thousand dollars. The middle class spends 350-400 thousand to buy a house, it will turn out to be about 250 square meters. The average annual income for a family is about 65 thousand.
Our house costs 500 thousand, but this is considered above average, and it has a larger area – 300 meters. We have already paid off the mortgage, but in general they are usually not in a hurry with this. They try to pay for retirement in order to free themselves from large expenses.
Let’s not forget about real estate taxes: 3-5 thousand per year per house.
Food and entertainment
Ann Arbor has an old authentic food market on Wednesdays and Saturdays where you can buy farm products and support a local producer. But I often go to a regular supermarket. They are here for every taste: both more expensive and cheaper, there are even for vegetarians. I try to go to those that sell bio-products – there, of course, more expensive, but the quality is different. We go grocery shopping once a week, we usually leave 150-200 dollars there.
In our spare time we go to the gym ($55-60 per person per month).
It is also customary here to dine out often, in a cafe or restaurant. The average check is probably $50 to $70 with drinks.
American childhood
In the States people get married and have children later than in Russia. This is due to the fact that people rely only on themselves and want to get on their feet first. Until the age of 25 – study, then – a career. By the age of 30, they buy a house, start a family, then live a little “for themselves”, together … This is how it turns out that the first child is somewhere in the “30 plus”.
No grandmothers sit here with babies, and no one will let them go on maternity leave for three years. Three months after giving birth, you need to go to work. Accordingly, either the child in a nursery, or hire a nanny. The latter is much more expensive, so baby care is a common option.
Our daughter went to a Russian kindergarten. We were lucky that there was one nearby – of course, this is not the case in all cities. Kindergarten costs about $200 a week, but Russian is cheaper for some reason. A babysitter would cost somewhere around $450 a week.
First of all, the girl was taught Russian, and she is learning English just now, having entered the SK (in Russian – “zero school”). While studying for free. The process is very interesting – there are no textbooks, no notebooks, in general, they try not to load the children too much. Great emphasis on independent work at home: tasks are given that parents can do with the baby themselves (but they are optional, this is all optional). The results are good: my daughter came to the “zero school”, knowing only the alphabet, and now she already reads and speaks pretty decent English.

After the “zero” you can go to a free school, or to a private one, or to the so-called charter (it’s free for parents – everything is paid for by various philanthropists). We will probably try to get into an ordinary public school first, but in a special class with a good program. If the daughter fails to pass the tests there, then she will have to think about a private institution.
In general, here a public school is not always bad. They have their own ratings, and in our area, for example, there are many strong schools to which you can request a transfer if the local school does not suit you. After public school, it is quite possible to enter a decent university – well, not the Ivy League, but the same University of Michigan – quite.
Private school is not cheap, and the further you go, the more expensive it is. Let me give you an example of Cranbrook School, which we looked after for our daughter if she does not go to the state. Elementary school (grades one through five) $25,500 per year, middle school (grades six through eight) $28,100, high school (grades 9 through 12) $33,100 (or $45,200 if room and board included). So think about it, is it normal to spend that kind of money on a school. In fairness, I note that this is really a very good school, one of the top ten in the state.
Gentle Doctors
Before Obama Care, we had free insurance from my husband’s work. Now we pay somewhere around 500 dollars a month for everyone. This insurance does not cover all cases – you have to treat various small things like a cold at your own expense. You can do any check-up (medical examination) for free, this is included in the cost of insurance.
Insurance is still protection against serious health problems or major planned hospitalizations. For example, childbirth costs 15-20 thousand dollars, but I paid extra three thousand from my own pocket, and everything else was covered by insurance.
I gave birth at the University of Michigan Hospital. This is a solid medical institution, one of the best in the country. Accordingly, everything was at a very good level – and qualified doctors, and a single room, and attentive nurses.
It is worth talking about the attitude towards the patient separately. All the medical staff communicate very politely, very correctly and gently – sometimes it feels like they are choosing every word.
However, I didn’t go to doctors much in Russia, what’s here, so it’s hard for me to compare. But of course, the general level is higher here, and most importantly, there is a different attitude towards patients.
Home state – the best vacation spot
Summer in Michigan is very good – warm, many picturesque places to go. Michigan is called the state of a thousand lakes, and it’s true. Very beautiful views, wide choice of hotels. So we, as true Americans, support the economy of our native state, we rest here.
In winter, we are drawn to warmer climes, and we mainly choose the Caribbean. The cheapest and closest thing for us is to fly to Mexico or the Dominican Republic: about five and a half hours, direct flight, all inclusive …
Even in winter we go skiing and snowboarding. In the north of the state there is a Boyne Highlands resort – the mountains there are not very high, but you can come for two or three days (on weekends). If you get out further, then there is the famous resort of Aspen.

We’ve been to a lot of places in the States over the years. I liked it in California, Hawaii, Washington…
Holidays in Hawaii, the inscription in the sand was made by the author

In America, attractions are not the same as in Europe – not museums and monuments. The main attraction here is landscapes, nature.
We also visit Europe sometimes, but infrequently – still far away.
Russia, my doll house
My parents also moved to the States and live in a nearby town. I still have a brother in Moscow, but he is also thinking of moving somewhere.
I don’t often have special reasons to come to my homeland. Yes, and desires – as soon as you remember how long to fly, you will immediately change your mind.
In total, I have been to Russia three times since moving to the States. Met classmates and friends. The penultimate time I got right into that same Moscow summer smog in 2010, and now the whole family has come for the New Year holidays, they landed in 30-degree frosts. The city was very beautifully decorated, and despite the cold, we enjoyed walking around the center, were in the Kolomenskoye park, went to the theater. But it was terribly unusual for me in our “three-ruble note”, which once seemed so big – after our American home, it’s like a doll’s house.

A romantic from the big road: how a designer from Tomsk makes money on photographs of non-existent people
In 2018, Ivan Boyko, a native of Tomsk, launched a photo stock with people’s faces Generated photos. Its distinguishing feature is that none of the faces exist in reality – they were generated by neural networks. Why is a Russian living in Argentina hunting for the faces of people around the world and creating fake characters?
“Investors consistently call us once a month. I say over and over again: we do not rise (we attract investments – Forbe s), but it will be nice to meet you. We already have money that we don’t know what to do with,” says Icons8 founder Ivan Boyko. Since 2018, he has been developing the Generated photos photo stock, in which all the pictures are generated by artificial intelligence (AI).
Now the database contains more than 2 million photos. Among the users of the stock there are a dating service, a Chinese cereal manufacturer, and police departments. According to its own data, the startup grows by 500 new customers and earns an average of $15,000 per month. A monthly subscription to the stock costs $20, but users can get photos for free if they use the photos for non-commercial purposes. Universities that conduct academic research also receive free access.
The startup is being developed with funds from Boyko’s main business, Icons8 design agency. Boyko launched the agency back in 2003: initially it specialized in creating web interfaces and icons, later it began to deal with stock illustrations and photographs. According to Boyko, almost two decades after the start, the business’s revenue is growing by 40% annually, in 2020 it amounted to $2.1 million. who enter into individual contracts with the agency (among them – Google and Microsoft). Another 10% comes from advertising – companies can place banners on the agency’s website.
Distance acquaintance: how much you can earn on video interviews with job seekers
“Wow, icons”
Ivan Boyko chats with Forbes via video link, sitting on a sun lounger near the coast in the green thickets. Eight years ago, he moved from Moscow to Buenos Aires, where he met his second wife. Since then, for most of the year, the vagabondila couple (spent on the road – Forbes ), and returned to Argentina only for the summer. “I didn’t want to settle down, because traveling helps to stay in a state of discomfort, and it saves you from procrastination,” the entrepreneur explains. However, due to the closure of the borders, travel became impossible and the couple bought a house in the resort town of Karilo. It is still undergoing renovations, so the interview is periodically interrupted due to the noise of work.
Boyko was born in Tomsk, where he graduated from art school with honors and in 1995 entered Tomsk State University as a developer. Becoming a programmer seemed to him a more promising option than a career as an artist. In July 1998, in his third year, he moved to Moscow and got a job as an interface designer in the Moscow design studio AlterMedia. Two months later, the company closed and Boyko went to work for Parallels, a software development company. In four years at the agency, he grew from an ordinary designer to a senior one and built the interface development department from scratch.
Writes poetry, cleans up, becomes human: what artificial intelligence has learned to do in 2020
In early 2003, he left Parallels and began to develop as a freelancer. A few months before his dismissal, Boyko launched the VisualPharm website, where he posted the portfolio accumulated during his work. In addition to interfaces, the designer created icons. Tiny images of magnifiers, envelopes, and other items were needed by the Parallels team to better demonstrate finished interfaces to customers. As a result, Boyko realized that the icons drawn by him were of more interest to the market than the services of a web designer. “Everyone wrote:“ Wow, icons , well, I started making icons, ”recalls the entrepreneur.
The next year he worked in his rented apartment. Leaving a permanent job, Boyko thought that freelancing would cut his income four times – from $2,000 to $500. Therefore, for the sake of economy, I rented the second bedroom in a rented apartment to a friend of the New Zealander. “My first wife was a model. She then went to Japan,” says Boyko. I was left alone in a two-room apartment. It cost $400 a month. With the New Zealander we paid in half. I figured that another $300 would be enough to pay for internet, food, rent.”
But already in the first month, the entrepreneur, according to him, began to earn “much more” due to the icons. In the same 2003, he hired his first employee. For a salary of $ 400, she processed incoming orders – the entrepreneur could no longer cope with the flow. A year later, Boyko’s team already had five people working, he rented an office on Leningradsky Prospekt next to the Trachtenberg Cafe of radio host Roman Trakhtenberg, and registered the company.
“Perhaps we ourselves are a set of algorithms”: Kazuo Ishiguro on faith, truth and love in the era of artificial intelligence
For the first 10 years, Boyko’s team has been creating customized icons for clients’ requests. Among them were, for example, General Electric and Europol. The latter asked to draw icons with images of weapons and drugs. The agency did not advertise, clients themselves found it on the Internet, the entrepreneur claims: “Our task was to work in such a way that they would stay.”
In 2012, Boyko refocused on stock icons. “The subjects were often repeated. And the artist had to redraw everything all over again, it was tiring,” he explains. The first set of 200 icons was drawn by the artist Alexander Khristoforov, who by that time had been working for the company for six years. Boyko’s team chose the Metro style for them, which was used in the Windows 8 operating system. “It just appeared that year,” says Khristoforov. “And we were trying so hard to get customers who wanted their apps to feel like home next to new apps from Microsoft.” The stock was named Icons8, after the new Windows operating system.
The team began distributing icons for free, in return, the user had to provide a link to the agency’s website on their website — thanks to the links, the website was better indexed by browsers. “Then people themselves began to offer: come on without authorship, come on with money. We wrote on the site that you can not indicate authorship for $ 99, and in the first month we earned $ 1,200, ”recalls Boyko.
Two years later, he renamed the company to Icons8, and in 2016 he moved to the United States, because, according to him, there is the largest market for icons, affordable fintech solutions and business support programs.
Zombies instead of people
In 2017, in addition to icons, the agency began creating illustrations. “We work for interface designers. It happens that you need to show the error in full screen. With the icon it turned out to be empty and boring, and we created a free set of illustrations for such errors: “Page not found”, “No Internet” and so on. That is why the project is still called Ouch!”, says Boyko. Then it became clear that people use illustrations in other situations as well, so the agency assigned a team that works on illustrations all the time.
In April 2018, Boyko launched a paid stock with photos of Moose. He was prompted to do this by a conversation with a friend, Anton Zykin, the CEO of the Clay agency from San Francisco, which develops applications. “We ate borscht and he said that the topic of photostock has not been exhausted, that for each project his team spends $3,000 per photo,” says Boyko. After the conversation, he studied several popular photo stocks – Unsplash, Pexels, Stocksy, Shutterstock and others – and found that they lack studio photos, because they cannot be taken casually or while traveling – it is expensive and troublesome.
Data leakage and the risk of license revocation: banks named the main threats from cyber attacks In the first, the entrepreneur worked with his wife – he filmed, and she conducted castings and directed the shooting. “There we ran the process, looked at what worked, what didn’t,” the entrepreneur recalls. Four full-time employees worked in the Moscow studio: a producer, a photographer, a make-up artist and a stylist. They filmed three times a week: twice they photographed scenes with models (for example, hiking trips), once they photographed various objects. 1000-2000 shots came out at a time.
A couple of months after the launch of the studio, designers and developers joined the team. “When we shot a bunch of people, it turned out that minimalist backgrounds that are hard to find in the real world suited our style well: empty walls, repeating patterns, dramatic perspectives. Some things did not exist at all in nature: cryptocoins, robots,” says the entrepreneur. The designers created 3D renders, on which the developers then superimposed models and objects shot in the studio. This allowed us to quickly increase the number of photos in the stock.
DR
At the end of 2018, computer vision specialist and Icons8 employee Pavel Malay suggested testing algorithms that would generate faces of non-existent people. The result is similar to deepfakes, but the latter are based on images of specific people – mostly celebrities. The term “deepfakes” was first used in 2017, when Reddit user deepfakes posted several porn videos in which the faces of the original actors were replaced with images of famous actresses – Gal Gadot, Taylor Swift and Scarlett Johansson.
The first experiments with generative photography turned out to be unsuccessful: instead of images of people, the team received “roller-rolling zombies,” Boyko recalls. But then they began to use Nvidia’s free open source service StyleGAN, which allowed you to create an unlimited number of photos of non-existent people using open databases. At that time it was the most advanced solution, explains the entrepreneur. To generate new faces, Boyko’s team used tens of thousands of photos of 70 models from the Moose stock.
The “uncanny valley” effect: can robots make us happy? Working with artificial intelligence requires large investments, and therefore the team wanted to participate in startup support programs, says Boyko: “And they looked at us and said: yes, you are an old fart, not a startup. ” The new company received a discount on video cards from Nvidia. Deep learning is computationally intensive, explains the entrepreneur. “You feed data to the machine model and it thinks,” he says. – If you have good iron, then she will think a day or a week, if bad – months, years. Or the model will collapse altogether and generate noise instead of portraits.
The company presented a ready-made stock of 100,000 photos of non-existent people in September 2019. Information about this was published on the Product Hunt platform. thanks to which clients came in the first week: a university, an HR platform and a dating service. The university was studying what kind of appearance inspires confidence in people, and the dating service planned to place the generated photos on advertising banners, Boyko explains. He refuses to name the clients of the service, citing the NDA.
Hunting for new faces
There are over 2 million photographs of fictitious people in the Generated Photos database. According to Boyko, the stock was replenished twice. The first time – after negative feedback from users. “People complained that the people in the pictures were too beautiful. Then we decided instead of models to shoot a variety of people: old people, babies, fat people, bald people, ”says Boyko. “We needed a wide variety of genders, nationalities, skin colors, ages and appearances. They filmed albinos, they found Egyptians, men from Central Asia, ”recalls Anna Golde, head of the film crew. They searched for suitable people at universities, groups of models on Vkontakte. On the set, they were filmed from different angles, asked to change their posture and facial expressions.
The second time the stock was updated was when Nvidia released the StyleGAN update at the end of 2019. Then it became possible to create more detailed photos, for example, with wrinkles on the face. To filter images with marriage, the company has developed classifiers that filter out images according to seven criteria. “Teeth may be out of place, or hair hanging in the air near the head,” Boyko lists common defects. “There was a photo where a person had a bunch of meat sticking out of his ear.”
Paper revitalization: a new business based on augmented reality
According to Boyko, the diversity of nationalities distinguishes his stocks from Stocksy, Shutterstock, Unsplash, Pexels and other competitive bases. But ethnic groups are still poorly represented. “This is due to the fact that it is impossible to find people of all nationalities in Moscow and Buenos Aires,” the entrepreneur explains. Therefore, when the borders open, Boyko plans to send the team on a photo trip to different countries.
Customers can now upload up to 10,000 photos by paying $100. The customer base grows by 500 organizations and individual users every month. They subscribe by providing billing information and an email address. Therefore, the entrepreneur does not know who buys photos and why. The startup makes an average of $15,000 per month. $3,000 from subscriptions, the remaining $12,000 comes from one-time photo sales.
Boyko concludes individual contracts with some companies. For example, one major social network, he said, ordered 15,000 photos from Generated Photos to train an internal service to recognize fake accounts. Such contracts amount to tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars, he assures.
Time flyer
Other companies are also developing photo generation technologies. For example, in 2018, the startup Rosebud AI was launched, which also creates photos and videos with non-existent people using AI. In March 2020, it raised $1.5 million in a seed round, with Khosla Ventures, an American venture capital fund, as the lead investor.
In Russia, a neural network that generates the faces of people who do not exist in reality is being developed by the developer of virtual characters Malivar. According to Svetlana Belousova, co-founder of Malivar, generative photos simplify the process of developing advertising creatives, it is “faster, cheaper and more convenient than working with real people.” “Minus the fee for the models and the risks associated with unforeseen situations,” the entrepreneur notes. “No special locations, no equipment, no people are required to create content, just a laptop and the Internet.”
According to Belousova, synthetic content creation technologies appeared ten years ago, but then only innovators used them. “Now the conservative majority is gradually getting to this. Deepfakes and digital bloggers are increasingly seen on TikTok and Instagram,” she says. According to Belousova, interest in the direction intensified during the pandemic, when the physical world was inaccessible and it became necessary to look for alternatives.
“You need to set realistic goals for girls”: how Ann Makosinski won the Google competition at the age of 15 and built a career as an inventor
She is confident that the technology will soon find applications in education, film, politics and other fields. “It will be great when students can choose how the teacher will look like – like a Hollywood actor, a historical hero or a fantasy character,” Belousova imagines. – It will be possible to create content with a person who is physically inaccessible – is far away, involved in other projects, went on vacation or died. One and the same politician will be able to speak at several events at the same time, an actor will be able to take part in several films and projects.”
The technology is also used in advertising, but so far on a small scale. This is due to the fact that people believe in real characters more than fictional ones, says Dimitris Vajas, CEO of advertising agency PHD Russia. Alexander Papkov, director of technology at Media Direction Group, is confident that generative technologies will be used more widely in five to seven years. “Already today, personalized advertising makes it possible to create an individual appeal for each person,” he says. “And in the future it will be possible to quickly create tens of thousands of variations of a virtual image that will speak the same language with the consumer, take into account his interests, gender, age and other characteristics. ” In the future, synthetic content factories will compete with bloggers, Papkov predicts.
Jam instead of money
Generated Photos plans to improve photographs of fictitious people. As long as they look the same and a trained eye can distinguish a fake photo from a real one. In April 2021, the team introduced the “Face Generator”, with which you can transform photos from the database – change the age and gender of a person, head tilt, hair color and length, hairstyle, add makeup and accessories. So the pictures are more diverse.
For the past two years, the team has also been working on a service that will allow you to “transplant” generated faces into real photos from the Moose stock. When the company will release the service, Boyko cannot say. “So far, the images are low resolution and not suitable for stock,” he admits.
“Perhaps we ourselves are a set of algorithms”: Kazuo Ishiguro on faith, truth and love in the era of artificial intelligence
Boyko does not have ambitions to quickly grow, take the company public and turn it one day into a unicorn. According to him, investors from various funds often approach him with offers, but he does not accept them, preferring to develop “on his own”, and Icons8 generates enough money to feed AI projects. “I am romantic about entrepreneurship,” the entrepreneur admits. “I love making jam from low-hanging apples, I love inventing and combining—combining two existing things and getting new interesting products.”

LOOK / What should be the real Ukrainian dream :: Author Andrey Kolesnik
Kyiv wrote off people from accounts
Only Russia can bring peace
Andrey Kolesnik
veteran of special forces of the Navy, deputy of the State Duma
1000 howitzers. 300 MLRS installations. 500 tanks. All this is by no means a complete list of weapons that, as it turned out, Ukraine immediately wants to receive from the West. And get it for free. Otherwise, Ukrainian officials say, Ukraine cannot achieve parity with Russia on the battlefield. And that means you will inevitably lose. Capitulates. Sooner or later, but guaranteed.
In Kyiv, they are right. Without a sharp – by orders of magnitude – reinforcement of the Armed Forces of Ukraine with heavy weapons, Ukraine cannot for a long time resist such a military force as the Russian army. Even if he throws millions of his citizens into the trenches. And yet this list is as fantastic as it is indicative. In Kyiv, they do not even represent the essence of what they are asking the West for. How much effort, knowledge and resources are applied to make all these weapons.
It is fantastic because no one will ever give Ukraine so many weapons. 1000 howitzers is generally all that the United States has right now. 500 tanks – slightly less than the three largest armed forces in Europe – France, Britain and Germany. The United States has more, of course, several thousand – but the immediate transfer of such a quantity of this type of weapon to Europe means a gigantic, expensive and lengthy transport operation. It is technically, physically and organizationally impossible to fulfill the wishes of the Kyiv regime. Even if we close our eyes to the fact that hundreds of tanks need hundreds of crews that still need to be trained.
It is indicative because it demonstrates the enchanting arrogance and arrogance of the Kyiv leadership. What it imagines about itself and about its role in this world. The way Zelensky and his associates exaggerate the importance of their country. Its economy, politics, army. Ukraine probably thinks it’s the size of the US. Or at least comparable to them.
Ukraine imagined that it was able to resist the main military adversary of the United States for an equal long time – a state that has several thousand nuclear warheads at its disposal. A state with a thousand-year history, vast territory, colossal human, technical, natural and financial resources. Which Ukraine used to be a part of and whose achievements (for example, the An-225 Mriya aircraft) were fraudulently appropriated. Just give, they say, 1000 howitzers and 500 tanks – and that’s it, we’ll get to Moscow.
Before us is either colossal naivety or stupidity of the same size. Any weapon is only a derivative of the general state of the state that creates or uses it. You cannot create an airplane out of sand and sticks. It is impossible to create a tank army from a crowd of savages.
Ukraine is a state that has betrayed its true history, the one in which it was together with Russia. It was in this story that Ukraine was part of a gigantic empire that controlled half the world, put the first man into space and created nuclear power. But after the betrayal, after the breakaway from Russia, Ukraine for 30 years turned into an abandoned provincial farm in a remote half-station of Europe.
For so many years the Kyiv regime has been deceiving itself and the Ukrainian people. Imitated freedom where he actually built a prison. He called violence against the majority democracy. Friendship – its complete subordination to the West. Lies, falsehood and imitation have become the hallmark of the Kyiv regime. Not surprisingly, the result of such imitation was the fantasy of “a thousand howitzers.” Only proximity to Russia, confrontation with Russia, parasitism on Russia gave Ukraine at least some significance as a state. Ukraine made sense as a fragment of Russia – and no other. The gas pipeline, nuclear power plants, weapons depots, steel mills and seaports built in Soviet times have fed this country for the past 30 years.
The Ukrainian authorities have not been able to come up with anything of their own for all this time. The only know-how introduced by Ukraine is to hide behind its own people during hostilities. Even the Nazis did not reach this point during the Great Patriotic War. A special military operation resets Ukraine not so much by military means, but, first of all, by ideological means. Russia refused to follow the logic of decline, humiliation and playing by someone else’s rules. By returning the original Russian territories – Kherson, Berdyansk, Melitopol, and this list will be continued – Russia is returning its true meaning to the world. The one that she lost after the collapse of the USSR.
But even after the catastrophe of the 1990s, our country was able to overcome the crisis and maintain the key parameters of a world power. Rebuilt the army. At times increased the state budget. Built hundreds of new factories, thousands of kilometers of roads. She held the Olympics and returned the Crimea. And together with Russia, Ukraine, or rather, those territories that still bear this name, can return their true meaning. If they want to have a decent future, they must return to where they left. The small can turn out to be big again only by returning to the composition of the big.
Do you want to be great? There is a simple way – become a part of something great again. The idea of Ukraine’s desire to reach out to a strong Russia can be found (in a perverted form, of course) even in the Kyiv propagandist Arestovich.
This is the dream that can become a reality, to which any responsible Ukrainian leadership should strive. The dream is much brighter and more correct than 1000 howitzers and 300 MLRS installations.

To help a student. Grade 9 “Dead Souls”
Olga Razumikhina is a graduate of the Literary Institute. A. M. Gorky, book reviewer and proofreader, as well as a tutor in Russian language and literature. Every week she comments on the works that students in grades 9-11 go through.
The column “Helping the Schoolchildren” will be useful both for those who just want to refresh the plot of a particular book in their memory, and for those who look deeper. In the materials of O. Razumikhina there are historical references, references to the works of literary critics, as well as indications of curious details and “Easter eggs” in the texts of writers of the 18th-20th centuries.
Text: Olga Razumikhin neither too thick nor too thin; one cannot say that he is old, but it is not so that he is too young. Chichikov’s rank in the “Table of Ranks” is also approximately in the middle: in those days – and the action of the work takes place in the 1830s – there were 14 classes, the main character of “Dead Souls” belongs to the sixth. But the criminal plan that Chichikov came up with can be called unique.
Criminal scheme
Many schoolchildren, reading the poem for the first time, do not quite understand what dead souls are and how one could make money on them. The thing is that until 1861 the nobles were subordinate to serfs, who were called “souls”. The phrase “the landowner has five hundred souls” meant that five hundred male peasants work for him: women were not taken into account in the list of “souls”. The landowner charged the serfs with corvee, that is, products of manual labor (for example, milk, meat, wool, etc.) or quitrent – money, but he himself paid the tax, and the more souls the landowner had, the greater the contribution was supposed to be made in the benefit of the state.
But the population census was not held every year, and during this time a certain number of peasants died. But according to the lists, they were still considered alive, and they also had to be paid for. The cunning Chichikov decided to take advantage of this: he offered the landlords money for the peasants, who were already dead, in order to free the nobles from contributions. However, he did not do this out of good intentions: he was going to pawn the purchased “peasants” as in a pawnshop. For this, it was not necessary to bring them anywhere: it was enough to show a paper confirming the fact of purchase. So our hero went to the provincial town of NN to “fish”.
Why didn’t Chichikov want to earn money in an honest way? Largely because the late father gave him instructions:
Look, Pavlusha, study, do not be a fool and do not hang out, but most of all please teachers and bosses. <...> Don’t mess with your comrades, they won’t teach you good things; and if it comes to that, then hang out with those who are richer, so that on occasion they can be useful to you. Do not treat or treat anyone, but behave better so that you are treated, and most of all, take care and save a penny.
These words made a big impression on the boy, and already at school he sucked up to the teachers so that they would give him good grades. He then joined the customs service and made a fortune helping to smuggle. However, the secret became clear, and Chichikov was fired, and all the “earnings” went to pay off the judges. Perhaps the Chichikov scheme at customs would not have been revealed if it were not for a quarrel with an accomplice. So the main character was once again convinced that his father was right: only trouble from his comrades. And if so, then he must implement a new criminal scheme alone.
Manilov
The first landowner whom Chichikov honors with a visit is a middle-aged man named Manilov. Like Chichikov, he is nothing special, but this is not so much about the appearance of the hero and his position in society, but about his character, habits and aspirations.
God alone could tell what Manilov’s character was. <...> In his eyes he was a prominent person; his features were not devoid of pleasantness, but this pleasantness seemed to have been too sugary. <...> In the first minute of a conversation with him, you cannot but say: what a pleasant and kind person! In the next minute you will not say anything, but in the third you will say: the devil knows what it is! and move away; if you don’t move away, you will feel mortal boredom.
The landowner lives with his wife and two sons: Alkid and Themistoclus. These names are taken from the “dead” ancient Greek language and indicate that the person who named the children that way was hopelessly “stuck” in some one time. The more we study the interior of the Manilov estate, the more we are convinced of this. So, in the office for many years there has been a book laid on the 14th page, and two chairs are missing in the furniture set, acquired immediately after the wedding.
So what does Manilov do if he doesn’t pay attention to housekeeping? Maybe he is a good family man? At first glance, it seems so, especially since he and his wife are “completely satisfied with each other.” However, this communication is also empty, superficial: the husband and wife receive guests and sometimes “print a kiss on each other”, but mostly they are idle. Manilov spends his free time dreaming, and when Chichikov arrives, he gladly gives him dead souls for free, and then imagines how nice it would be if Pavel Ivanovich settled in the neighborhood.
Korobochka
After Manilov, Chichikov visits a landowner named Korobochka. She offers Chichikov to buy hemp, rye flour or cereals from her, but the main character rejects all these offers. Pavel Ivanovich insists that he needs “dead souls”, and nothing more. The noblewoman gets frightened and thinks that Chichikov is offering to dig them out of the ground, but then immediately begins to bargain.
The box is terribly afraid of selling too cheap, and soon the reader realizes that all her time is taken up by petty trade and the accumulation of money. Why she needs them is unclear: the serfs provide the hostess with everything necessary, the old woman is not interested in luxury goods, and there is no one to leave an inheritance (she did not have children). However, Korobochka is so thrifty that it provided different pouches for coins of different denominations:
All the coins are taken into one bag, fifty dollars into another, quarters into the third, although it looks like there is nothing in the chest of drawers except linen, night blouses, cotton hanks, and a torn coat, which then has to turn into a dress, if the old one somehow burns out during the baking of holiday cakes with all sorts of spinners or wears out by itself. But the dress will not burn and will not be worn out by itself; <...> the salop is destined to lie open for a long time, and then, according to the spiritual will, the niece of the great sister, along with all other rubbish, will get it.
It is Korobochka who subsequently, unwittingly, will reveal Chichikov’s plan: she will go to the city and begin to find out the price of dead souls, wanting to make sure that she did not sell too cheap. Also, the next landowner will play a significant role in exposing Pavel Ivanovich.
Nozdryov
A nobleman with a funny surname Nozdryov is the exact opposite of the diligent family man Manilov. He is a reveler and a mischievous, a passionate hunter and a card sharper. And he also seems to suffer from Munchausen’s syndrome, that is, he does not distinguish truth from fiction in his own imagination.
Nozdryov was in some respects a historical person. Not a single meeting he attended was without a story. <...> Either the gendarmes will take him by the arms out of the hall, or they will be forced to push out their own friends. <...> Either he will cut himself in the buffet in such a way that he only laughs, or he will lie in the most cruel way, so that at last he himself will become ashamed. And he will lie completely without any need: he will suddenly tell that he had a horse of some blue or pink wool.
Chichikov had no intention of going to Nozdryov, but met him in a tavern, and he nearly took Pavel Ivanovich by force to his estate. Naturally, the new friend soon arranges an ugly scandal. Chichikov is also trying to bargain for dead souls from him, but he does not agree to sell: he convinces Pavel Ivanovich to win against him in checkers and begins to frankly cheat. The main character announces that he does not agree to play on such terms, and Nozdryov calls him a scoundrel and rushes into the fray. Chichikov is saved only by the fact that at the same moment the police captain knocks on the door and announces that Nozdryov has been taken to court “on the occasion of inflicting personal insult on the landowner Maximov with rods in a drunken state. ”
Sobakevich
The distinguishing feature of the next landowner, Sobakevich, is not excessive Manilov “sweetness”, not stinginess and not violent character, but the undisguised contempt that he feels for everyone in a row. When Chichikov tries to start small talk and mention one of the people he met in the city of NN, Sobakevich calls them all fools and robbers, and then sums up:
I know them all: they are all swindlers; the whole city is like this: a scammer sits on a scammer and drives a scammer. All Christ sellers. There is only one decent person there: the prosecutor, and even that, to tell the truth, is a pig.
The rudeness of character is literally written on Sobakevich’s face: at first he seems to Chichikov like “a medium-sized bear.” The landowner almost does not move his neck and constantly steps on the guests’ feet, and his estate is furnished with ugly heavy furniture, which seems to want to say: “And I, too, Sobakevich!” So, the nobleman has no tact and taste, but worldly ingenuity – as much as you like. Hearing from Chichikov that he needs dead souls, Sobakevich does not ask a single “unnecessary” question, but sets such a price that Pavel Ivanovich does not believe his own ears. However, two scammers still make a deal, and only then the main character of the poem discovers that Mikhailo Semyonych cheated and put the girl on the list (money, as already mentioned, was not relied on for women).
Plyushkin
The last landowner Chichikov meets is an old man named Plyushkin. Unlike the above characters, his life is more tragic than comical. Plyushkin’s estate was once the richest, and he lived there with his adored wife and three children.
But the good mistress died. <...> [The eldest daughter] Alexandra Stepanovna soon ran away with the staff captain, <...> knowing that her father does not like officers due to a strange prejudice, as if all military gamblers and motishki. <...> The son, being sent to the provincial city in order to find out in the ward, in the opinion of the father, an essential service, decided instead to the regiment. <...> Finally, the last daughter who remained with him in the house died, and the old man found himself alone as the watchman, keeper and owner of his wealth.
The man who valued his family more than anything in the world was left all alone. Now he spends whole days looking for any rubbish, such as an old sole or a piece of paper that he folds in the corner of one of the rooms. There was no food left in the house that could be offered to guests, except for a dried Easter cake; and Chichikov, seeing Plyushkin for the first time, mistook him for an old housekeeper. The estate has fallen into disrepair, and the serfs are now “dying like flies” or running away.
Circles of Hell
Why does Chichikov visit the landowners in this order? Most literary critics believe that when creating “Dead Souls” N.V. Gogol relied on the plot of the “Divine Comedy” by the medieval Italian poet Dante Alighieri. The protagonist of this work travels through the circles of hell, and the lower he descends, the heavier the sins of the people he meets.

list of diagnoses and transition procedure
Hello! In the article we will tell you under what diagnoses a student can receive education from home. We have prepared for you an official list of diseases, a list of required documents and the procedure for processing a transfer to home schooling.
One of the most common reasons for a student to go to homeschooling is an illness or injury that prevents them from regularly attending an educational institution, that is, for medical reasons. This makes it possible for a disabled child, a student who has been injured or has a disease, to receive a full-fledged education.
Home schooling for health reasons is not a form of education, but the conditions under which the educational process should be organized for children with non-standard educational needs. This way of learning is called home-based.
Unlike other types of home education, the student is not expelled, but continues to be enrolled in the school and is a full-fledged participant in the educational process. That is why the educational institution is responsible for the education of the child. With home-based learning, the teacher visits and teaches the student at his home.
Lessons can be a standard 45 minutes or shortened. It depends on the type of illness and the health of the student.
When learning, parents can use the help of tutors or distance learning (online courses, remote developmental classes) at their discretion.
Not for every illness or injury, a student is transferred to a home form of education. In Russia, the Ministry of Health has created Order No. 436n, containing a list of diagnoses and diseases in which a transition to home-based education is possible. This order was issued on June 30, 2016, but is also valid in 2021.
List of diseases:
Malignant neoplasms.
Mental and behavioral disorders.
Diseases of the blood, hematopoietic organs and certain disorders involving the immune mechanism.
Endocrine system.
Nervous system.
Eye and adnexa.
Circulatory systems.
Respiratory organs.
Digestive organs.
Leather.
Musculoskeletal system and connective tissue.
Genitourinary sphere.
Consequences of injuries and surgical interventions.
Official detailed list of all diseases:
If the treatment of any illness, injury or rehabilitation requires bed rest for one month or more, this is also a medical indication for home teaching.
Selection of courses
Distance school education from grades 1 to 11 in 2022
See selection
The rights of homeschooled students are identical to those of regular students:
The student has the right to receive all the necessary textbooks, methodological and other materials that are available in the school library and are necessary for a full-fledged educational process.
If the school has any extra classes or activities, the child has the right to attend. But only if they correspond to his individual program.
The parents of the child, as well as the child himself, if necessary, have the right to receive advice from teachers and methodological assistance, if necessary for mastering the curriculum.
If the child is home-schooled, he, like other students, has the right to pass the final and intermediate assessment.
If the final assessment is passed successfully, the student receives a certificate. If, due to the characteristics of the child, his program differed from the general one, he has the right to undergo individual certification and receive a state document with a mark.
Such a student will be certified only in the main subjects. If you want your child to be certified in all subjects, it makes sense to drop out of the school where you live and switch to an online school.
At distance learning, a child will be able to gain knowledge of the same volume and level as an ordinary student. But at the same time, you can choose an individual schedule to avoid overwork. A huge plus will be that a tablet or laptop will be enough for training. This will greatly simplify the educational process for children who are prescribed bed rest.
To switch to home schooling for health reasons, you must perform the following steps in sequence:
First of all, you will need a certificate from a doctor stating that the child needs to be transferred to home schooling. This document is issued by the local pediatrician, but the decision itself is made by the medical commission.
Write an application to the principal of the school about the transition to home schooling.
If necessary, an individual plan is drawn up, according to which the educational process will take place. It should indicate the subjects, the number of hours per week, corresponding to the level of health and ability to acquire knowledge of a particular child.
An agreement is concluded with the school, which sets out the rights and obligations of the parties.
After receiving the certificate and application, the school creates an order. It will indicate the terms of the intermediate and final certification, the teachers who will be teaching the child, and the training program.
The final moment will be receiving a journal, similar to a regular class journal, but created for a specific student. It will display the grades of knowledge and the material covered.
What documents are needed to make a transfer:
certificate from a medical facility confirming the transition to home schooling.
application addressed to the principal of the school.
Parent’s passport and child’s birth certificate (or passport).
Who gives a certificate of indications
In order to get a certificate from the clinic about the transfer to home schooling, first of all, you need to contact the local pediatrician. He is obliged to issue referrals to specialized doctors for diagnosis. After that, the specialist who treats the child makes a conclusion and makes a recommendation for home schooling.
With the results of examinations and analyzes, as well as the conclusion from the attending physician, you must contact the deputy head physician in the clinic, who is responsible for clinical and expert work, and obtain a decision from the medical commission.
Based on the decision, a certificate is issued by a local therapist. It must comply with the form and contain the round seal of the clinic and the signatures of three doctors: the head physician, the attending physician, and the doctor who issued the certificate. If necessary, the periods during which the child can be home-schooled should be prescribed. The certificate will be valid for one year.
Home schooling due to illness is not always permanent. If the illness is curable or the child is in rehabilitation, home schooling may be temporary.
After the child is on the mend and can attend school without problems, home schooling ends.

About the author: Petr Sergeev, scientific director of the educational online platform Uchi. ru.
In Russia, there are no regular official statistics on the number of children in home schooling. At the Edcrunch conference (2019), it was stated that about 100 thousand schoolchildren chose this form of education in 2019year. According to the Ministry of Education and Science, at the beginning of the 2015-2016 academic year, only about 8,500 people were studying in the form of family education in Russia (less than one tenth of a percent of all schoolchildren). The Family Education Association conducted its own research and found that the number of children in family education in Russia increased from 8452 to 15 thousand people at the beginning of the 2017/2018 academic year. But despite the fact that the numbers vary, the growth of interest in homeschooling – and explosively – is noticeable.
Primary school students are transferred to distance learning due to year-round travel or constant travel of parents (diplomats or athletes) for work. Pupils in grades 10-11, who have consciously decided on their future profession, often ask to be transferred to distance learning – this allows them to devote more time to specialized subjects and preparing for exams. There are also exceptional situations: due to problems at school (including bullying), parents have to transfer their child to family education in order to maintain his psychological and physical health. The teaching of disabled children with preserved intelligence also falls under a special situation – it is often difficult for them to physically sit through many hours of lessons. At home, it is much easier to deal with them, making more pauses between classes and distributing the load according to the needs of the child.
A request for distance learning arises in situations where a child needs a special approach and a non-standard class schedule. If you’re considering this option, here’s what you need to know.
Legal features of home education
According to “Law ob Education” (273-ФЗ), there are only two options for obtaining education organization) mey “self-education”, but the meaning of the process itself remains the same.
Final assessments (OGE andUnified State Examination) are held only at the school on the same conditions for all students. But at the same time, the formats of intermediate quarterly and annual certifications may vary depending on the educational institution.
There is an article in the “Law on Education” that each school independently approves the terms and formats of certification, so all “family families” pass it in accordance with the school “Regulations”. At the same time, the format, including the remote form of knowledge control, as well as the terms are agreed with the administration of the educational institution and at the request of the parents.
Parents often prefer to teach their children on their own according to a state-approved program. At the same time, you can learn both from school textbooks and from author’s methods. The main thing here is the end result and the execution of the program. On this topic, large online communities of parents have been created on the Internet, who exchange experiences and overcome problems together.
For example, many parents have concerns about their child’s learning. Being in the classroom and discussing, for example, some literary work or historical event, the student receives many different opinions in a short time and learns to look for the truth among them. Thus, the material is remembered faster. At home, when the mother acts as a teacher, it is much more difficult to get such an experience. There are different solutions for this. For example, you can watch adapted films with your child based on this or that historical event, or parents in an unobtrusive manner can periodically discuss this or that educational material with the child using some life examples, drawing him into independent reasoning and expressing different points of view.
What is important to find out before making a final decision
If a parent wants to not only transfer their child to homeschooling, but also enroll him in an online school, you need to first deal with a few nuances:
It is important not to confuse family education with correspondence education. With the format of family education, the child is officially expelled from the educational institution and attached to the educational organization for certification. In this case, the parents are legally responsible for the child’s education and its results. And with the correspondence form, the child remains “on the balance sheet” of the school, and the educational institution is responsible for his education. But one way or another, parents will need to reach an understanding with the school administration of the deadlines for passing certifications and the format for conducting them.
It is also necessary to find out where and how to conduct dach ege i ege. kak Right, online-schools are assigned to school-partners, Process. city, coordinating this issue with the administration of the institution. Then future exams and certifications will be held there, which simplifies the solution of many issues.
Sometimes “family families” have problems with discounts and benefits for schoolchildren, because by law they are not tied to an educational institution. Because of this, it is not always possible to buy train tickets, tickets to museums or movies at a children’s rate for a child. With external form training such questions no emerges.
Family and part-time forms of education are the most common after the traditional full-time. But besides them, there are also non-trivial combinations, for example, part-time education, distance learning in certain subjects, and others. However, parents should understand: the more non-standard the format of study, the more issues will have to be agreed with the school administration, and you need to be prepared for such additional troubles.
Pros and cons of distance learning
The main plus is, of course, the personalization of education, adjusting programs to the individual characteristics of the child. The main disadvantage is problems with socialization.
Pros:
Flexibility of in studying the material: you can devote more time and attention to important and difficult subjects in mastering than disciplines of secondary importance;
Participation in the formation of the schedule, the distribution of time between class and independent work;
Choice of the form of activities depending on the abilities and needs of a particular child: video, audio, reading or discussion of the material;
Freedom of movement for parents and a child without being tied to a specific educational institution and daily routine.
Minuses:
Parents should not only solve the problem with socialization child, but also constantly monitor the process;
Parents are responsible for the education of the child – this is an additional responsibility that requires time, and sometimes professional skills;
The child is not at school – someone must control what is happening and be responsible for his life and health;
Online learning requires some skills (and more independence 0010 ) from a child.
Despite the abundance of pluses, the existing minuses can lead to serious difficulties and problems. So, one of the parents, most likely, will not be able to work at a permanent job on a daily basis. Switching to family education may lead to higher costs (for example, for babysitting, etc.). Therefore, before making a final decision, you need to carefully weigh each item and discuss with your family a possible change in the rhythm of life of all family members.
Quick guide: how to transition to distance learning
The process of transitioning to homeschooling takes much less time than, perhaps, the discussion and decision itself. The easiest way would be to choose a decent online school: in this case, they will “take you by the hand” and tell you what papers to send where, give you ready-made forms, attach them to your partner school and, ideally, help you resolve the difficulties that arise. Compliance with such a mechanism is a sign of a quality online establishment.
If you decide to do everything yourself, then the first thing you need to decide is which school to attach the child to for passing test papers, the Unified State Examination and the Unified State Examination, and obtaining the final certificate. Be sure to talk to the director or head teacher and make sure that you equally understand the features of the process. Otherwise, it will not be a calm learning, but a constant overcoming of obstacles.
Formal steps towards family education look like this:
Notify local department of education on the decision to transfer the child to family education;
Write an application to the school where he is currently studying, about the transition to family education;
Attach to an accredited school for assessment. By the way, this may be the one he goes to now.
Please note that this process may have its own regional characteristics, which should be clarified with the local department of education.
Peculiarities of learning in an online school: the experience of parents
Let’s say you enrolled a child in an online school and from now on, only you are responsible forthelearning process. Arewhetherhaveonlineschoollicensedand accreditation is not so important for children who are attached to regular schools for certification. Ideally, such organizations hold a license to conduct educational activities and are registered as a legal entity, but the reputation of the school is of paramount importance. It is best to study the reviews before enrolling, communicate with the parents of other students and the management of the institution. Approach this process in detail, because no matter what the online school promises, you will have to constantly keep your finger on the pulse and control the process.
Before signing papers, it is necessary to think over not only the schedule dayof the student, butandthelifeincludingthe main problem of the childthat worries parents In countries where online schools have been operating for decades, institutions offer students a daily schedule that includes, among other things, communication with peers.
Schedules in Russian online schools are flexible, and few offer a specific class schedule. Most often, materials are available around the clock, and parents themselves choose a convenient time for their child to study. Some online schools offer individual class schedules, including with online tutors for an additional fee.
But at the same time, parents need to independently look for ways to socialize the child. You can enroll him in circles or in sports sections. Communication with peers is vital for the development of each person. And if in the process of learning you or a family psychologist notice a lack of socialization, you should think about returning to the standard path of school education. This issue is decided individually within each family.
The parent, who is legally responsible for the education of the child, needs to monitor and record the progress of the student in the curriculum.
Online schools usually provide convenient tools for this: a personal account, progress statistics or a personal curator. If at the end of the training it is supposed to pass some kind of formal milestone (OGE, USE, SAT, ACT, A-level, etc.), then the child will be given the opportunity to write several test versions of the corresponding exam. Thus, you will have time to tighten up the “weak points” and improve the result.
Among the problems faced by clients of online schools, the main ones are of a technical nature. For example, the system does not recognize the child’s speech, especially in foreign language lessons, and marks the voice answers as incorrect. Some parents point out errors or inaccuracies in reinforcement tests or teaching materials. Most often, such issues are quickly resolved by the institution.
There are problems with the organization of communications. In some online schools, communication with the administration is not the best way, and sometimes it is difficult for parents to get through on the phone or receive an answer to their question by e-mail.

Great staff not lazy for all the behavior problems some of the children have that I have witnessed they are very professional, caring, and on top of all the children there. Very spacious and they keep the kids moving. The anonymous mother that posted obviously has a child that was attending here and is just trying to bad mouth the place considering she is the only individual parent who has commented. Get a life act like a grown up and not a teenager. You should be ashamed of yourself anonymous mother!

Raleigh daycare owner accused of sex crime with 5-year-old
Malay Jindal, 58, has been charged with statutory sex offense with a child.
RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — A Raleigh daycare owner is being accused of a sexual crime against a child.
Malay Jindal, 58, has been charged with statutory sex offense with a child.
He is suspected of engaging in a sexual act with a 5-year-old on July 29, according to court documents.
“The allegations happened in late July of this year. The five-year-old victim here disclosed to her mother and gave a similar disclosure the next day at the doctor. She provided idiosyncratic details about the book she was reading and said Mr. Jindal had scratchy fingers,” said the prosecuting attorney. “She spoke with a forensic interviewer who questioned her, the details and she’s remained consistent throughout.”
According to Jindal’s LinkedIn page, he’s an owner of The Goddard School on Creedmoor Road in north Raleigh.
It is not known if the crime was committed at the school. Records show he was running the school since 2010.
“Mr. Jindal has denied the allegations. We cooperated from beginning and gave access to Raleigh police of entire premises. They interviewed teachers and Mr. Jindal,” said the defense attorney. “It is his intent to plead not guilty. On this particular day of the alleged incident, he was covering for another teacher who was out for lunch. There were at least 11 students in that classroom, and it was naptime.”
The case is drawing mixed reaction from parents of students attending the Goddard School.
One mom posted online saying she’s had hundreds of encounters with Jindal, and she’s never had the feeling that he’d do what he is being charged with.
Another mom said she never thought she’d have to ask her daughter the questions she had to ask after hearing the news.
Jindal is being held on a $2 million bond. He will have electronic monitoring and was ordered to have no contact with children under the age of 18.

Agile roles in scrum | Atlassian
What are the three roles in scrum?
Scrum has three roles: product owner, scrum master, and development team members. Although everything seems pretty self-explanatory, the responsibilities of such positions can be confusing. Many teams ask if they need to change job titles when implementing Scrum. In short: no, you don’t.
In this article, we’ll take a look at Scrum Roles and talk about how you can use them in your organization without having to print new business cards.
Scrum roles and positions
The three Scrum roles describe the main responsibilities of the members of a Scrum team. These are not positions. This means that an employee with any position, including you, can take on one of these roles. Because the essence of Scrum is empirical, self-organizing, and continual improvement, these three roles provide the minimum definition of responsibilities and accountabilities for effective team work. They allow teams to be accountable for their organization and to continually improve.
Building a scrum team
Scrum is a methodology for building workflows within a team. It provides a basic structure for organizing regular meetings, creating artifacts, and defining the responsibilities of each participant.
However, you will not get a universal model for teamwork. For example, if a team is building an insurance web application, they will need people who know the technology, internal systems, and business domain. At the same time, the team working on the next generation of the game Donkey Kong requires completely different skills. They will need a graphic designer, a recording engineer, and a graphic developer. Since the problems being solved are different, the structure and skills of the team must also be different.
Things get more difficult as the complexity of the problem the team is trying to solve increases. As the saying goes, “You don’t know what you don’t know until you know you didn’t know it.” Teams may not know in advance what skills they will need or how much work they will need to do, and therefore they need a margin of flexibility to change course as knowledge accumulates.
To organize this complex, ever-changing and often annoying world a bit, Scrum provides a simple structure with three roles: Team Member, Product Owner, and Scrum Master.
The development team: redefining the concept of “developer”
The development team is the people who do the work. At first, you might think that the development team refers only to technical specialists. But it is not always the case. According to the Scrum guidelines, a development team can be made up of people from a variety of backgrounds, including designers, writers, programmers, etc.
Imagine that you own a house and hire a “developer”. He designs the project and does the work. Yes, he can lay bricks, do plumbing, and even dig huge holes, but this person is still just a “developer”. This means that the role of “developer” in Scrum means a team member who has certain skills needed to get the job done on the team.
The development team must be able to self-organize themselves to make decisions about how to get the job done. A development team can be compared to a production support team that is called in at night because an accident has occurred. The development team, like the production support team, can make decisions and fix/evaluate incoming problems. Self-organization is not a neglect of the organization, but the granting of the right to solve a work problem to those people who are directly involved in this work.
The development team is responsible for the following.
Delivery of work results through the sprint.
To ensure transparency during the sprint, they meet at the daily Scrum meeting (sometimes called stand-up). A daily Scrum meeting promotes transparency. On it, team members can ask for help, talk about their successes, point out problems and blockers. The ScrumMaster may be facilitating the daily Scrum meetings, but ultimately the responsibility for running these meetings rests with the development team. Such meetings help the team to control and adapt the work being done and work more efficiently.
Product Owner: Setting a Clear Direction
Agile teams are by definition agile and responsive to change, and the Product Owner is responsible for delivering maximum value. The Product Owner represents the business and tells the developers what needs to be achieved. Trust between these two roles is of fundamental importance.
The Product Owner must not only understand the customer, but also have a concept of the value that the Scrum team delivers to the customer. In addition, the product owner determines the balance between the needs of other stakeholders in the organization.
Thus, the product owner must take into account all these inputs and prioritize work. This is perhaps his most significant responsibility, as conflicting priorities and vague attitudes not only reduce team effectiveness, but can also destroy important trust between the business and the development team.
Agile teams are inherently about analysis and adaptation. This means that a change in priority can lead to major changes in team structure, work products, and end results. That is why it is essential for the success of Scrum teams that only one person is involved in prioritization. This is the product owner.
The Scrum Guide highlights the following responsibilities of the Product Owner.
Scrum backlog management. This does not mean that only the product owner pushes new tasks into the product backlog; but ultimately it is he who is responsible for the backlog, according to which the development team delivers the product. This means that the Product Owner needs to know about everything in the Product Backlog, and other people adding tasks to the Backlog need to contact the Product Owner.
Release management. A sprint is not a release cycle, but a planning cycle. This means that the Scrum team can deliver at any time. Ideally, they deliver frequently throughout the sprint, considering actual usage and customer feedback during the sprint review. However, continuous supply is not always possible and requires different release models. It is important for the product owner to know when certain features can and should be released.
Stakeholder management. Any product has many stakeholders, from users, customers, administration and to the leaders of the organization. For the value delivery by the development team to be effective, the product owner needs to work with all of these parties. This may include a large amount of communication and management work.
Scrum Master: Bringing All the Elements Together
The Scrum Master is the role that brings all the elements together and ensures effective implementation of the Scrum methodology. In practice, this means that such an employee helps the product owner to determine the value, the development team to deliver value, and the Scrum team to become better. A Scrum Master is a servant leader who not only develops a loyal leadership style, but also practices it daily.
It helps the product owner better understand and express value, manage the backlog, plan work with the team, and break that work down for the most effective learning. The Scrum Master helps the development team with self-organization, sets up the participants to achieve the final result and the implementation of increments, and also manages blockers together with them. In addition, the Scrum Master serves the organization as a whole by helping it understand the essence of the Scrum methodology and create an enabling environment for it.
The Scrum Master focuses on the following.
Transparency. To conduct effective analysis and adaptation, it is important that the right people can see what is happening. But achieving this is much more difficult than it seems. The task of the Scrum Master is to ensure the transparency of the work of the Scrum team. For this, for example, story maps are created or ideas are brought into Confluence based on the results of a retrospective.
Empirical approach. The main idea of Scrum and Agile approaches is that the best way to plan is to work and learn from the results. The empirical process is not easy and requires the Scrum Master to train the Scrum Team to break down the work into its component parts, clearly describe and evaluate the final results.
Self-organization. This means that the development team can set up their own workflow on their own. Self-organization comes with time, and its implementation requires help and support. The Scrum Master encourages participants to step out of their comfort zone and try different techniques and practices, such as “delegation poker”. This technique helps to identify and challenge traditional ideas about the boundaries of roles and responsibilities.
Values. Scrum distinguishes five values (courage, focus, responsibility, respect, and openness) not because they are good, but because they create an atmosphere of security and trust. This atmosphere is necessary for the successful development of flexibility. Each member of the Scrum Team is required to follow these values, and the Scrum Master actively supports such initiatives and reminds everyone of their importance.
The ScrumMaster assists the Product Owner in sprint planning and review so that the team maintains a clear sense of value and direction. He assists the development team in the day-to-day work of Scrum by making sure work is done and blockers are removed. He is also responsible for dealing with blockers that the team cannot resolve on their own. The Scrum Master makes sure that the Scrum Team sees all the opportunities for development, and the retrospective provides a set of clearly articulated achievable results.
Getting Started with Flexible Scrum Roles
At first glance, the three main responsibilities of Scrum roles are fairly easy to interpret in any Scrum team, but it can often be difficult to match them to your job title. Here’s where to start.
If you have a lot of useful skills to deliver value to customers and enjoy doing it, you should be on the Scrum development team. In fact, this team is the most important element of any Agile organization as it is directly involved in delivering value to customers and stakeholders. This means that position is determined by how long you deliver value or help others to do so.
If you love everything about the customer, stakeholder management, and the business domain, then you might be more in tune with the Product Owner role. In most organizations, this person must be respected and trusted by the business to be able to make decisions. The person in this role should be a bit of a politician, as they will have to negotiate compromises and try to please everyone.
If you want to help team members work together effectively and change the world with Scrum and Agile, then the Scrum Master role is for you. This role is fully people-oriented and places a strong emphasis on coaching, learning, and facilitation.

Team board after completion of the fourth stage of the in-person scenario “Roles and Responsibilities”.
This team held a meeting using Zoom. Conversation minutes and summaries have been added to Confluence.
Instructions for running this scenario
1. Prepare 15 minutes
Set aside a shared space on your network or office.
If you’re running the script over a video conference, you can create a spreadsheet on a Confluence page or Google Docs.
Label the following columns.
Position
Responsibilities (according to others)
Responsibilities (according to me)
Not assigned
Whether you’re running a script in person or remotely, send a message to the team explaining the event so everyone understands what work needs to be discussed.
TIP. LARGE GROUPS
Are there more than 4 people in a team? If the team has 6-8 members, allow 90 minutes for the script.
If there are 9 or more people on the team, divide the scenario into several 1-hour workshops.
TIP. TEAM MISSION
At the beginning of the scenario, remember the mission of the team to outline the area of responsibility of the entire team.
2. Define the roles 5 min
Define the roles in the team (e.g. team leader, developer, designer, accountant) and record them in the Roles section of the spreadsheet you prepared.
If the role is played by several team members at once, write it down only once. Some team members may have multiple roles. For example, a developer may also be a project manager. In this case, add each role to the table.
3. Define the responsibilities of colleagues 15 minutes
Identify the main responsibilities that you think are inherent in the roles of other participants. Write them down in a shared digital document or on sticky notes.
If you feel that a duty cannot be unambiguously assigned to one of the roles, list it in the section for unassigned duties.
TIP. CONCENTRATION
The workshop should focus on roles, not people.
By focusing on the role, the team will be able to identify the missing skills regardless of the composition of the participants.
4. Identify Your Responsibilities 5 min
Now ask everyone to think of their main (usually 3 to 5) responsibilities related to their role.
Write each responsibility on a sticky note or digital note, then rank them in order of importance.
5. Discuss the responsibilities of the roles 15 minutes
The performer of each role is to read out their entries from the “In my opinion” category. At the same time, it is possible to explain why some tasks in the role are more important than others. Each meeting participant then shares their ideas from the “According to Others” column. The group can discuss differences in ideas and prioritization.
The role performer investigates these discrepancies and then accepts or rejects additional responsibilities. If responsibilities overlap, identify the main executor for them, as well as assistants or deputies.
Move duties that were not accepted or do not have an executor to the “Not Assigned” section at the bottom of the table.
TIP. CONFIRMATION
In some organizations, the role player may need management confirmation in order to implement the conclusions from the scenario and finalize their role.
EXAMPLE. RESPONSIBILITIES WITHOUT PERFORMERS
This team identifies and discusses responsibilities that no one assumes, and captures the opinions of participants in Google Docs.
View example
6. Review duties that do not have an assigned person 15 minutes
Review with the group the duties that do not have an assigned person. These responsibilities can be related to one of the existing roles. Discuss as a group why these responsibilities may or may not be included in a particular role.
If they don’t fit into any role, you may need to create a new role or revise an old one. Be sure to select the person who will be responsible for finding the performer of these tasks, and the date on which you will return to this issue.
TIP. DIFFICULT QUESTIONS
Pay attention to responsibilities that no role is willing to take on. If you find such a duty, bring it up for group discussion.
7. Summarize and identify next steps 5 min
At the end of the scenario, summarize the roles and responsibilities to make sure everyone on the team agrees.
Designate who is responsible for the roles, and then document the individual roles, responsibilities, and deadlines agreed by consensus.
TIP. MAKE YOUR VIEWS
If the team cannot agree on certain roles and responsibilities, mark them as questions to come back to later in smaller meetings.
Follow up
Share the results
Share the outcome document of the activity with the team to identify gaps or opportunities.
Communicate roles and responsibilities to key stakeholders and leaders. Be sure to notify the team about this.
TIP. REVIEW
Invite the team to review the scenario in three or six months, or when the team’s impressions change. It becomes easier to play when you fill your hand.
Options
Cross-functional teams
If you are part of a cross-functional team, ask each role to contribute a few responsibilities before the meeting. This will give you a starting point that gives you an idea of what kind of responsibilities are assigned to different roles. Cross-functional teams may have more responsibilities without an executive, so allow more time to assign responsible people.
Several employees with the same role
If more than one person has the same role, you can invite them to discuss their responsibilities before the scenario workshop. Then they will be able to share a common point of view and justify their ideas during the workshop.
