About Edmond Library

The busiest library in the Metropolitan Library System, Edmond Library annually circulates more than one million books and other materials. First opened in 1967 as a storefront location, the library moved to 10 S. Boulevard in 1973. The largest renovation and expansion was completed in 2000, adding 10,000 square feet. The renovated library included the Fred P. Snyder Quiet Reading Room, a beautiful round room for children’s programs, and an expanded meeting room space. In later updates, a new automatic materials sorter was added along with additional parking.

Book drop location: On the west side of building with a designated temporary parking space available off of Boulevard.

Edmond Life & Leisure

From the stage of the Grand Ole Opry to Bangkok’s Patravadi Theatre, Oklahoma Ambassador of Goodwill, Kyle Dillingham, has energized audiences in over 40 countries and now he will be celebrating the grand opening of his own stage in downtown Edmond, Friday, October 14th. The festivities at the new Kyle Dillingham Community Arts Stage, located at 15 W. Campbell (behind Silver Leaf Gems), will kick off with an official ribbon cutting at 7:00pm followed by a performance by the award-winning artist and other guest artists.

The focal point of the outdoor venue is the whimsical mural, created by the artists of Thunderdome Tattoos, which features a frog in a straw hat strumming a banjo amongst the lily pads with a tornado in the background.

“It’s an intimate space with almost no line between audience and stage,” Dillingham said. “But I just love how you can still get lost in the space where the mural meets the surrounding nature.”

Craig Brudzinski, the brainchild of this new creative space, envisioned the vacant lot next to his workshop as a place for the community to come together.

“I was visualizing a place where people could gather and experience the vast talent here in Edmond,” said Brudzinski. “Kyle has connected people around the world, so it was a perfect fit to honor him with this stage to connect everyone in our community. This new venue will be available to artists and arts organizations free of charge.”

“The arts are such powerful tools that so naturally bring us all together,” Dillingham said. “I can’t wait to watch the magic unfold at the new Kyle Dillingham Community Arts Stage – a truly enchanting setting where all are welcome and where hopefully many can come for inspiration and encouragement. The arts can change everything, and it only takes a little!”

The grand opening event is free and open to the public. Seating is limited so bring your lawn chairs. For more information, contact Stephanie Brudzinski, 405-808-8804.

About Kyle Dillingham:

History was made in 2019 at the Grand Ole Opry with an unprecedented debut performance by Kyle Dillingham on a Dolly Parton skateboard.

“Kyle Dillingham has made Opry history. His debut tonight, and the first ever to enter and exit on a skateboard. It is my thought that the fiddler blew the roof off the Grand Ole Opry house tonight!” -Bill Cody, Grand Ole Opry Announcer/Host

“Proud of you brother…you play violin/fiddle with more passion than anyone in history…and the skateboard? Wow!!!” -The Oak Ridge Boys

“I’ve never seen anything like this before!” -Roy Clark.

“Ken Burns and I travel all over the United States. After hearing your performance, we turned to each other and agreed that we had witnessed something amazing.” -Paula Kerger, President of PBS.

“Hell of a musician, that’s for sure.” -Charley Pride.

Dillingham, an Oklahoma native, picked up the violin when he was nine, and eight years later, he gave two featured performances at the Grand Ole Opry.

Presented by the Oklahoma Hall of Fame, Dillingham was awarded with the prestigious honor of Oklahoma Ambassador of Goodwill in 2020. Previously honored Ambassadors of Goodwill include Toby Keith, Kristin Chenoweth, Roger Miller, Reba McEntire, Jimmy Webb, and Hank Thompson, to name a few.

Dillingham is also the winner of the 2020 and 2011 International Acoustic Music Awards and the 2021 and 2022 Indie Music Channel Awards.

He and his band, Horseshoe Road, participated in the 2018-2019 American Music Abroad season, organized by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and The Association of American Voices, with a tour through Kosovo and Kuwait.

That same year, they completed their third Silk Road and the Fiddle Tour through China representing Oklahoma and the United States with a musical celebration of cultural relations  and performances.

In 2018, they were one of the featured performers at the National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellows Concert in Washington, DC, to honor their good friend and Fellow recipient, Manuel Cuevas. Cuevas has been attributed as being the man who put Johnny Cash in black.

“We were also selected for a coveted performance at the 2018 CMA Fest in Nashville, which was another highlight of our career”, Dillingham said. “After our performance, we had the chance to play for Charley Pride in his dressing room at the Grand Ole Opry and hang out with Blake Shelton and others backstage! What an incredible experience.”

Also that year, they opened for Grammy Award-winner, Lee Greenwood, at the renowned Neewollah Festival in Independence, Kansas.

Their 2008 Thailand tour commemorated the 175th anniversary of relations between the U. S. and the Kingdom of Thailand, and their 2013 tour of Korea celebrated the 60th anniversary of Partnership and Shared Prosperity between Korea and the U.S.

Kyle Dillingham & Horseshoe Road have also taken the stage with The Charlie Daniels Band, The Oak Ridge Boys, Roy Clark, Hank Thompson, Lisa Ling, Vince Gill, Jimmy Webb, Toby Keith, Hanson, Leona Mitchell and Thailand’s Pop Superstar, Tik Shiro, and have performed with the Taipei Symphony Orchestra, China’s Lanzhou Symphony Orchestra and the Amici Symphony Orchestra, among others.

Honored by Oklahoma Governor Brad Henry, Dillingham was selected as a recipient of the 2009 Governor’s Arts Award, acknowledging his life’s work as a violinist, vocalist, musical  ambassador for the state of Oklahoma and for his gift to connect with people throughout the world.

Dillingham is now managed by legendary impresario, Jim Halsey, who has guided the careers of many great performers including Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, Clint Black, James Brown and many others.

He has performed for the King of Malaysia, the Princess of Thailand, Beijing Central Conservatory (broadcast on Chinese national television) and Singapore’s National Day Celebration. Dillingham has also performed for many government leaders including the Japanese, Thai and Saudi Arabian Ambassadors as well as for many US Ambassadors while abroad.

Dillingham has also championed the commissions and performed the premieres of eight new works for solo violin and symphony orchestra – collaborating with many orchestras worldwide.

For more information about Kyle Dillingham, visit his website or follow him on social media.

PHOTO BY ERIECH TAPIA Dozens of people gathered Sunday at the Edmond Police Department to pray for one of their own. Sgt. Joe Wells shot at a chase suspect who then hit him with his vehicle. The officer was thrown from his motorcycle into a ravine Friday.

Dozens of people gathered Sunday at the Edmond Police Department to pray for one of their own. Sgt. Joe Wells shot at a chase suspect who then hit him with his vehicle. The officer was thrown from his motorcycle into a ravine Friday.

The wife of another Edmond officer organized the prayer vigil after she said she woke up Saturday morning with a heavy feeling in her heart and knew something needed to be done to lift that cloud of worry, off of the officers and the people who hope they come home at the end of every shift.

“It’s really been the weirdest thing. It’s been a weird feeling. It’s been a heavy feeling for everyone,” explained Emily Morefield. She organized the prayer vigil.

Nearly two months after Motorcycle cop, Sgt. CJ Nelson was hit and killed by a truck as he sat at a red light, a nearly identical “officer down” call went out over the airwaves.

Friday, Sgt. Joe Wells was in the middle of a chase on his own motorcycle when the suspect hit him with a truck after Sgt. Wells fired a shot. The Sergeant was thrown from his bike into a ravine.

“That was a very traumatic event for all of us and now here we do that again,” said Edmond P.D.’s Lt. Mark Oak. “Just fear and anxiety has really never been an issue at least in my home and it just feels like this year it’s just been a lot of that. A lot of anxiety a lot of worries when they go to work,” said Emily.

Emily Morefield said she just needed to do something to let her husband and everyone else who wears the Edmond uniform know they’re supported.

“I fought with it for about an hour and finally I gave in and said alright I’m going to do it. It’s very much out of my comfort zone to do something like this but it was needed,” she said.

Mark said, they do.

“It’s uplifting to see the support of the community I’ll be honest with you, that’s a big deal for us. That’s what keeps up going,” said Lt. Oak. He added, “I’m glad I came and hopefully some people saw my face and that helped them as well just as when I saw their face.”

The Edmond Police Department said Sgt. Wells’ condition is still critical. A 24-year-old male has been arrested in connection with the incident.

COVID-19

What are McDonald’s hours during coronavirus? When will they go back to the hours I am used to?

In order to comply with state and local regulations, some restaurants have had to adjust their operating hours. We are committed to serving you your McDonald’s favorites during these challenging times, and are closely monitoring additional restrictions as well as when they are able to be lifted.

Why is my McDonald’s Drive-Thru only?

We are closely monitoring all local, state and federal regulations to provide customers with a contactless pickup experience. As a result of these regulations, some restaurants are only serving customers through the Drive-Thru, while others remain open for carry-out, as well as serving customers through the Drive-Thru, with Mobile Order & Pay on McDonald’s Global Mobile app and with McDelivery®.

What is McDonald’s doing to help prevent the spread of COVID-19?

The health and safety of restaurant employees and customers is a top priority. In addition to our standard sanitation procedures, our restaurant teams have:

  • Have implemented contactless operations
  • Undergo wellness checks before starting their shift
  • Have put social distancing floor stickers in place to guide customers on maintaining a proper distance
  • Are trained on social distancing best practices behind the counter
  • Have installed protective barriers at order points
  • Are wearing masks or face coverings if unvaccinated (or fully vaccinated and still choose to do so), and gloves for food handling, and ensuring masks are available for managers, crew and customers.
  • Have increased the frequency of cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfection of high-touchpoint surfaces
  • Are continuing our high standards of promoting regular and thorough handwashing and reminding our crew members of our best practices for personal hygiene
  • Where available, are increasing the use of alcohol-based hand sanitizer as a supplement to frequent handwashing

Additionally, new procedures and guidelines for in-restaurant dining include:

  • Closing some seating and tables to accommodate social distancing
  • More frequent cleaning of high touch surfaces, including tables
  • Keeping high-maintenance Play Places closed and modifying our dine-in beverage procedures to minimize contact

We are also providing scenario-based guidance to restaurant management on how to work through various COVID-19 related situations, and communicating health and safety guidance updates from federal health authorities. We will continue to evaluate all safety measures currently in place, and adjust accordingly as we remain focused on the health and safety of restaurant employees and you, our customers.

Edmond Moore Hamilton is a famous American science fiction writer, especially famous for his works written in the space opera genre.

Born October 21, 1904 in the city of Youngstown, located in the very north of Ohio, one hundred kilometers from one of the Great Lakes – Erie. At that time, writes Sam Moskowitz, the spirit of New England was still in the air of the American Northeast. In other words, the spirit of the romantic era of the first settlers, the founding fathers of the nation, hardworking, rustic thorough and religious to the point of fanaticism … The family of the future writer was rooted precisely in those first settlers from Scotland and Ireland, who first settled in southern Virginia, and then moved north. However, everyone who saw Edmond Hamilton in his life noted that it was quite likely that the blood of Native Americans also flowed in his veins, half destroyed by new arrivals, Indians … Edmond’s father worked as a cartoonist in a local newspaper, and later, when his son successfully worked in the field of comics, this could also be explained by his father’s genes. The mother, who came from a Quaker family, taught at school before her marriage, and in the family she was, of course, the main figure: her husband, a romantic and addicted person, was often absent for a long time – he fought with the Spaniards in 1898 years old, laid telegraph lines in Alaska during the “gold rush” that raged there . .. All the housework fell on the shoulders of Mrs. Hamilton, who gave birth to two daughters before Edmond and one more after his birth.

Immediately after the birth of his son, business in the newspaper went very badly for Hamilton Sr., and he tried his luck in peasant labor, acquiring a small farm in a place called Poland (literally: Poland – in English). So the childhood memories of the future author of stellar epics boiled down mainly to fields, barns, a village house – without gas, water, electricity. Months could pass before a car that accidentally turned into those edges kicked up dust on the “Polish” dirt roads. “Cows, chickens, snow caps on fir trees in the dense forests surrounding the farm – this is an exact image of the old, calm and unchanged rural America” (from the memoirs of Edmond Hamilton). However, village life was over in 1911, when Edmond’s father got a job in Newcastle, located in the neighboring state of Pennsylvania. The city at that time was rather big: 40 thousand inhabitants, but most importantly, nearby, in the city of East Wilmington, there was a prestigious college – Westminster, where the future writer directed his steps immediately after graduation. He finished it brilliantly in all subjects – and, moreover, ahead of schedule, at the age of 14. Happy parents, proud of the knowledge that a child prodigy is growing in their family, contributed in every possible way to his interest in the sciences. Already in his second year, young Hamilton seemed to only confirm their optimistic hopes, having received encouragement as one of the most brilliant students. He also started smoking a pipe, read Bernard Shaw, Eugene O’Neill and Henrik Ibsen avidly. And, as you might guess, he dreamed of becoming a playwright…

But then an unexpected turn came in his life. The classes were boring, and the difference in age alienated Hamilton from his classmates; he turned into a complete introvert, starting to collect old books, and among them he discovered samples of literature that he had not noticed before: fiction! It wasn’t long before Edgar Rice Burroughs, Abraham Merritt, George Allan England, and similar idols of the turn of the century were noticeably squeezed out of his circle of reading the classics. A new hobby put an end to the academic career of a talented student. When his absenteeism, and what was even worse – the church (Westminster was a Presbyterian religious college) – exceeded all the norms of decency, Hamilton was expelled from the third year. It is not enough to say that the family was upset – the only son broke all their hopes. Instead of a physics diploma, he limited himself to the work of a clerk on the Pennsylvania Railroad, but after working there for even three years, he lost this, as it turned out later, his first and last in his life – work “for a salary”.

And then he sat down and wrote the first science fiction story. It happened in 1925 – and for more than half a century, until his death, Edmond Hamilton did not part with his happily acquired life’s work. “I still think,” he recalled a few years before his death, “that the decision to earn a living in science fiction was pure madness, but … it worked! Since 1925, when I sold my first story to a professional magazine, I have done nothing else. And in general, my profession has brought me a certain amount of wealth – I don’t mean the amount of money earned, but the number of friends made and unimaginable old dreams realized.”

Hamilton’s first professional publication was “The Monster-God Mamurta”, published in the August 1926 issue of Wiird Tails. The year, in American magazine fiction, is truly the golden year of its birth! It was only months then, for it was not until April 1926 that the enterprising engineer and publisher Hugo Gernsbeck brought out the first issue of the very first specialized science fiction magazine, Aiming Stories. The fact that the whole Universe at once opened itself to the greedy glances of science fiction lovers became clear later, when the chicks of the “Gernsbeck call”, ridiculed and despised by a serious public, fledged and turned into … who would have thought? – into beautiful swans. But this will not happen soon, but for now, by the middle of 1926 years old, fiction was published sporadically in popular magazines with a broader orientation. And then two publications shone most of all, their appearance on street stalls was especially vigilantly watched by young fans – the magazines Ergosy and Wiird Tails. One of Ergosy’s aces was Abraham Merritt; no wonder he became Hamilton’s first idol in literature. A short novel by Merritt himself, “Women of the Forest”, also appeared in the same issue of “Wird Tails” where the future “star king” made his debut, and only the debutant lost to his idol in the rating, which the editors summed up each issue. At the same time, the newcomer Hamilton managed to push back to third place not just anyone, but another then-crown bearer (only in a different genre of horror literature) – Lovecraft himself …

But Hamilton’s real triumph came two years later, when the first story in the Interstellar Patrol series was printed in the magazine. With him, yesterday’s debutant immediately entered the Areopagus of American fiction, although the book edition had to wait until 1965, when most of the works of the cycle were combined into two volumes – Beyond the Universe and Colliding Luminaries.

It was the Interstellar Patrol series that made Hamilton famous as one of the founding fathers of modern American science fiction. More precisely, its essential and extremely popular component – the “space opera”. Why “one of”? Because he was by no means the first and in any case not the only one. Before him, Edward “Doc” Smith, the author of the epics about the “Space Lark” and the People of the Lens – Lensmen, managed to become famous in this genre (not to mention the legendary “forefather” – Edgar Rice Burroughs). And side by side with the creator of the Interstellar Patrol, an equally famous author, Jack Williamson, entered the literature. By the way, Hamilton had a close friendship with him, they even carried out a joint ritual voyage along the great river of America – the Mississippi … The “space opera” owes its flourishing to all the authors named. They wrote, in essence, about one thing. About the distant future, when humanity will not only master near and far space, but also establish a new world order. In alliance with other intelligent races of the Galaxy – or without their participation. A priori it was assumed that honest space merchants would still be robbed by pirates on the star roads, and near some red, blue or yellow sun – as earlier on the fields near Grunwald, Austerlitz or Kursk – grandiose star armadas would converge wall to wall. And, of course, a full set of palace intrigues, secret missions and kidnappings, blaster duels and uprisings on the periphery of a tyrannical star empire!

It was a western, a historical novel, and battle scenes, but on a scale already immeasurably expanded, galactic. Scales! This is what all the masters of the “space opera”, the diligent students of Dumas and Walter Scott, took their readers with without exception. Another question is that in a number of cases Hamilton did better than his contemporaries!

An illustrative example of his early work is the novel Out of the Universe published in a magazine in 1929. The Interstellar Patrol promptly responds to the threat of an invasion of the Galaxy by alien aggressors from a distant “dying” star cluster. Everything, of course, ends extremely well, to the greater glory of the Patrol. As for the scale, this is also on the level. After the hero on a secret mission reaches the Andromeda Nebula (where he finds allies – the gaseous life form that prevails there), the climax comes. At the end of the titanic battle of star squadrons destroying space, thousands of suns approach, forming a globular cluster, a kind of teeming “anthill of luminaries” – a giant super-sun…

However, having fulfilled all the rules of the game, Hamilton will certainly bring something of his own, original (later shamelessly borrowed from him by other authors). And in this space epic, you come across an interesting detail: the giant “Hall of the Living Dead”, the museum of alien life forms – endless rows of transparent cube-cells, in which indescribable inhabitants of various worlds are exhibited. Motionless, but… alive, maintained in a state of suspended animation… Eka unseen, you say? But pay attention to the release date of the novel!

By the way, the author of dashing universal races at superluminal speeds in one of his works suggested a completely correct “subluminal” way of space travel. In the literature, it later received the name “accelerating” (ram jet), and its essence is that an accelerating spacecraft extracts fuel for itself along the way: with the help of giant electromagnets, it collects cosmic gas on the road and converts it into energy.

All of the above, I repeat, he managed to write in the first decade and a half.

And then, for a long time, he plunged into a completely unusual genre – I would call it a “one-man series”. About the superman Kurt Newton, nicknamed “Captain Future” and his faithful companions – the robot Greg, the android Oto and the “living brain” Simon Wright – Hamilton almost single-handedly wrote dozens of stories in the 1940s and 50s. They were published mainly in a specially created for this purpose magazine of the same name, and later were published in the form of 13 “novels”. By the way, the idea of the series was suggested to the writer by editor Mort Weisinger, who himself became famous in the field of science fiction comics, having created – together with the “star king”, Henry Kuttner and other famous authors – not just anyone, but the legendary Superman, today known, mostly , according to numerous film versions . ..

It is now clear to the reader, I hope, that even before the release of The Star Kings, Hamilton rightfully wore his crown and had every reason to be called Edmond I. And the only one.

… In 1946, Hamilton married the writer Leigh Brackett, whom he had met a little earlier in Los Angeles. The wife wrote fiction herself, the science fiction spouses Katherine Moore and Henry Kuttner were also witnesses at the wedding, and a young local fan and author Ray Bradbury became a close friend of the newly-made couple … And three years later, Hamilton and Brackett moved to the east of the States, to a farm in Kinsman, Ohio, owned by distant relatives of Hamilton. The farm was over a hundred years old and covered an area of fifteen hectares; At that time, the spouses did not know that this would be their permanent home for the rest of their lives.

Before his death, formulating his attitude towards science fiction (for one of the largest biographical collections compiled at that time), Hamilton wrote:

“What is my opinion of the current state of science fiction? First, I must emphasize that I have always been opposed to any attempt whatsoever to impose dogmatic chains on this literature. Fantasy can do a lot, and luck sometimes awaits in the most incredible direction. But having stated the above, I am now free to make more subjective assessments. I still believe that science fiction has moved far from its early status as the literature of predictions, coming close to psychological fiction and fantasy. Today, in science fiction, it seems to me, there is much more elitism, bohemian isolation … And what worries me most of all is how few modern science fiction writers show interest in the prospect of space expansion. After decades of science fiction on the subject, space exploration has become a daily reality – and it happened before our eyes. Today, however, few people seem to care. If so, then science fiction has changed a lot: from a “big-screen” and often sinister literature that dreams of the future, it has become a narrow-gauge genre in which the desire to shine as a “literary” author completely obscures the good old interest in various images of the future. who burned us old people.

What advice would I give to an aspiring author? I don’t think I can say better than what Abraham Merritt once advised me as a beginner. He wrote to me in a letter: “Read less fiction written by others. Read non-fiction books, science books, and then let your imagination play with these known facts.”

Edmond Hamilton died on February 1, 1977, before the publication of his last collection, compiled by his wife, The Best of Edmond Hamilton (1977). The collection was received with enthusiasm by readers.

In 1996, contemporary science fiction writer Allen Steele wrote The Death of Captain Future, which he dedicated to “the late Edmond Hamilton.”
