I grew up in Arlington and studied at Reed, Tuckahoe and Swanson before moving to Fairfax. I attended James Madison University (Go Dukes!) and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education after marrying my Marine Corps husband and moving with him to Camp Lejeune, North Caroline. Later, I graduated from UNC-W again with a Master of Arts in Gifted Education. Outside of Camp Lejeune, my family lived in San Diego, California; Quantico, Virginia; Okinawa, Japan; Quantico again; Tampa, Florida, and finally back to my hometown of Arlington. I have four children, three of whom attended Ashlawn! When I’m not at school, I love to read and watch Nats and Caps! I am so excited to be taking on my new role as a gifted resource teacher this year. I have been fortunate to work with both teachers and students to provide learning expansion opportunities for all students who need it. I plan weekly with our amazing teachers so they can incorporate our APS resources for advanced learners and our critical and creative thinking activities into their teaching. I’m also coordinating the APS gifted selection process for Ashlon. I will be inviting the parent community to two Parent Information Meetings this fall to share more information about how the Gifted Program works. APS and in Ashlon.

    Gifted Services

Arlington Public Schools is committed to maximizing the strengths and potential of all students so they can become confident, versatile, responsible, and productive citizens. Believing that each person has their own merits, Arlington Public Schools recognizes that some students in the school population have unique abilities, interests, needs, and potential for achievement. Gifted students need the ability to think abstractly, work at different paces and levels of difficulty, and solve problems on their own. In addition, students eligible for gift services need opportunities to learn with others of similar ability, as well as opportunities for social and emotional development. Services for gifted children are provided through school and district activities that are consistent with school board and state goals. School services are provided in the following ways:

    • Under a shared resource model in which a classroom teacher works with a gifted teacher advisor to design and present appropriately differentiated learning experiences for gifted students in the mainstream classroom.
    • In general education classrooms with identified students grouped into clusters (minimum 5-8) and various flexible groupings based on current data
    • With teachers specially trained in learning needs and a curriculum written for gifted students.
    • Through curricula that differ from or extend from general education curriculum concepts and, where appropriate, through opportunities for acceleration and expansion

Special Assistance for Elementary and Secondary School Admissions Now Offered in South Florida

Choosing a primary or secondary school is a critical and decisive decision for a family. Today’s variety of options, including independent, religious, boarding, charter, magnetic, online, and zoned schools, can be confusing.

For many parents, applying to elementary, elementary and/or high school is often an unfamiliar process with many choices, deadlines and rules – both written and unwritten. International College Counselors can help guide your family through the admissions process.

In addition to our team of advisors who guide students through the boarding school process, one of our advisors now places students in the South Florida elementary and high schools that are best suited to them. We know that this process requires planning, collaboration and consultation. Our consultant will support you and your child, help you narrow down your list of possible schools, fill out applications, and ultimately choose the most suitable school. Based on our knowledge of South Florida schools and boarding schools, we can help you determine the programs and opportunities that are best for your child.

When choosing a school, the goal is to meet the needs and interests of your child in as many ways as possible. This will positively affect their academic, social and physical development. 1. Interests and needs of the child Different schools specialize in different areas. As much as you want your child to excel academically, you also need to choose a school that provides your child with opportunities to explore and develop their interests.

    2. School Philosophy, Organization and Curriculum

Knowledge of the school’s philosophy and approach to education can help parents identify the strengths and weaknesses of the school. The approach to learning can often determine whether a child will thrive. Understanding what grades are expected of your child – be it religion or language – should also be a determining factor. In addition, it is important to consider the organization of the school, including student-teacher ratios.

    3. Comfort

How important is convenience to you? Some factors to consider include: What is the travel time? Where are extracurricular activities held? Does the school offer transportation? In which area do most students live? Sometimes these problems can be dealt with, but sometimes they can cause additional stress.

    4. Cost

School price can sometimes be what is is the most important factor when choosing a school. Families may have to make sacrifices to afford certain schools, such as forgoing vacations and home renovations. Items such as uniforms, laptops and event fees also need to be factored into the cost. Some schools offer scholarships for children with special abilities, usually in academics, sports, or the arts, but many do not.

School Boundaries & Assignments | IUSD.org

In order to accommodate IUSD students, each residential area is assigned to a particular school at each grade level. An assigned school serves all students from its assigned attendance area who wish to enroll there.  Intradistrict/School Choice, where seats are available, and Alternative Schools provide choices for students who wish to enroll in a school other than their assigned neighborhood school.

In some instances, assigned residential schools become impacted by enrollment.  Due to unavailable seats, a student may be requested to enroll in a school other than their assigned neighborhood school. In such cases, students have the right of continued enrollment at their new assigned school and it is treated as their neighborhood school. If there is an interest to return to their assigned neighborhood school when space becomes available, the principal of the neighborhood school should be contacted no later than noon on the fourth Friday in February.

Attendance Boundary Changes

The Board may consider changes to School Attendance Area Boundaries.

Changes are held to a minimum, but are prompted by such factors as:

  • Declining enrollment in a given section of the district

  • New housing development in a given section of the district

  • Changes in capacity at a given school

  • Movement of special programs from one school to another

  • Alignment of elementary, middle, and high school areas

  • Home-to-school transportation distances

Edgewood Middle Pencil Pouch from 21-22 School Year RECALL

The following communication is being sent to all families of students in grades 7 and 8 at Edgewood Middle and students in grade 9 at Edgewood High Schools on November 17, 2022 at 5:00 p. m.:

Amazon recently contacted Edgewood Middle School regarding the pencil pouches that were purchased and distributed to students at Edgewood Middle School who were in 6, 7, and 8 grade last year, the 2021-2022 school year. The following communication was received from Amazon:

We have learned of a potential safety issue that may impact your Amazon purchase. A U.S. Regulatory Agency and/or our Product Safety Team has provided us information that indicates that the product may exceed the federal limits for lead and/or cadmium or contains a defect that presents a substantial product hazard under CPSA Section 15(a)(1) or (2).

If you still have this product, we urge you to stop using it immediately and dispose of the item.
If you purchased this item for someone else, please notify the recipient immediately and let them know they should dispose of the item. There is no need for you to return the product.

Harford County Public Schools is requesting any student that may still be using the pencil pouches distributed last year, dispose of the pencil pouch immediately. Please note, students in 6, 7, and 8 grade this year received a new pencil pouch that has not been affected by this recall.

COMING SOON! Meal Account Balance Notifications

The following message will be sent via phone, email, and text message to all parents and guardians at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 27, 2022:

Maryland legislation now requires notification of parent/guardians when a student meal account balance becomes low.

This is to notify you that parents and guardians will soon begin to receive monthly automated communications via phone and email when your student’s meal account reaches $2.60. Notification at this amount will ensure you’re aware you have funds remaining for approximately one meal.

Students without funds on their account will still receive a meal that is charged to their account but will not be able to purchase any snack items, even with cash. Consequently, families with a balance LESS THAN $0 will receive a weekly call notifying that your account balance needs to be paid.

We encourage families to login to your MySchoolBucks account and set your own balance reminders above $2.60 to avoid receiving the monthly or weekly notices. Please note, if you opt out of the balance alerts when they begin, you will be opting yourself out of receiving all HCPS outreach communications.

Federal waivers allowing universally free school meals ended June 30, 2022 – students who do not qualify for meal benefits or whose applications for meal benefits from previous years expired must pay $2. 50 for lunch in elementary schools or $2.60 for lunch in secondary schools. The online meal benefit application is available at www.hcpsmenus.com.

If you are unsure of your MySchoolBucks account or balance information, contact Food and Nutrition Services at 410-638-4078 for assistance.
