Celebrating children’s achievements great and small

When adults consider what builds kids’ self-esteem, what usually comes to mind are bigger achievements in a child’s life, such as making the basketball team, winning a science contest, or being in a school play.

However, when we spoke with a group of fifth and sixth graders, all of whom have identified learning disabilities, we learned some interesting facts. We asked the kids to talk about things they do, or have done, that they feel really great about. They started off by listing typical school achievements, such as getting good grades, doing well in math, or “acing” a test. It’s no surprise why these accomplishments improve their self-esteem.

Small Successes in School

But the kids also told us about smaller, perhaps less noticeable, successes in school. These are successes other kids naturally assume will happen or ones adults might not acknowledge:

• “Finishing a school year so I can relax during the summer. ”
• “Making it to the fifth grade because I didn’t think I would.”
• “Getting my homework done on time.”
• “Actually completing a social studies project.”
• “Making a new friend.”
• “Knowing your friends will like you even though you go to special education class.”

We found that kids with learning disabilities don’t take academic or social achievements for granted. Those kinds of accomplishments often don’t come as easily as they do to other kids and, for this reason, makes them a greater cause for celebration. After all, it’s the smaller, “quieter” successes in life that can add up to a lot, especially when it comes to the self-esteem of kids.

Advice to Teachers

The fifth and sixth graders also talked about simple acts of fairness and kindness by their teachers. These were actions that would help the self-esteem of any kid but especially one with learning disabilities. For most of us, these actions may seem to be instinctive. However, it’s wise to remind ourselves every now and then, as they can sometimes be forgotten or ignored in the daily life of a classroom:

• “Taking the time to explain things.”
• “Not yelling.”
• “Giving plenty of compliments and ‘put ups’ (opposite of ‘put downs’).”
• “Recognizing kids’ good ideas.”
• “Teaching that everyone’s brain is different and we all learn differently.”

Everyday Accomplishments

Finally, the kids talked about things they do at home, after school, or on the weekends that make them feel good about themselves. Such simple, everyday accomplishments help build self-esteem by reinforcing kids’ special talents and interests, and by connecting them to family and friends:

• “Knowing cool skateboard tricks.”
• “Eating dinner with my family.”
• “Taking care of my dog when he’s sick.”
• “Feeding my parakeet.”
• “Building my bike from scratch.”
• “Drawing well. ”
• “Being a good singer.”

In the end, the kids we spoke with didn’t necessarily ask for awards or certificates for their successes. Rather, they wanted a simple acknowledgement for all the everyday things they succeed at and do so well – accomplishments other kids might brush off as too easy, or acts adults might not even notice. By recognizing and celebrating such small, everyday successes with kids, parents and teachers can reinforce resilience and self-esteem in immeasurable ways.

Literacy Accomplishments: Three- and Four-Year-Olds

The Committee for the Prevention of Reading Difficulties in Young Children has compiled detailed lists of literacy accomplishments for children of different ages. Find out what the typical child can from ages three to four.

Below are highlights of typical literacy acquisition, supported by decades of research. The timing of these accomplishments depends on maturational and experiential differences among children, as well as the curriculum provided by a school.

• Knows that alphabet letters are a special category of visual graphics that can be individually named.
• Recognizes local environmental print.
• Knows that it is the print that is read in stories.
• Understands that different text forms are used for different functions of print (e.g., list for groceries).
• Pays attention to separable and repeating sounds in language (e.g., Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Eater, Peter Eater).
• Uses new vocabulary and grammatical constructions in own speech.
• Understands and follows oral directions.
• Is sensitive to some sequences of events in stories.
• Shows an interest in books and reading.
• When being read a story, connects information and events to life experiences.
• Questions and comments demonstrate understanding of literal meaning of story being told.
• Displays reading and writing attempts, calling attention to self: “Look at my story.”
• Can identify 10 alphabet letters, especially those from own name.
• “Writes” (scribbles) message as part of playful activity.
• May begin to attend to beginning or rhyming sound in salient words.

Free Printable Pretend Play Shopping Lists for Kids

If you have pretend food items in your play kitchen then you need these Pretend Play Shopping Lists for kids! The wooden and plastic pretend food that goes with our play kitchen is a disaster! It’s usually all over the floor and it makes me want to walk right back out of the room or throw it all away, however, we use it for so many things all of the time that I keep it around.

We’ve used our play food to:

• sorting – shape, color, type, size
• develop language skills
• social skills
• put into our miniature shopping cart
• “cook” with it in the play kitchen

DIY Grocery Store Dramatic Play Center

We made our own inexpensive pretend play grocery store in few simple steps.

1. For the bottom part of the grocery store shelves, we bought two shoe organizers, turned them on their sides, and attached them together with small screws.
2. We attached a piece of wood to the top.
3. Clear shoe containers were a great way to organize the food on the shelves.
4. We added price tags (local grocery stores can give you extras).
5. A 3M hook is on the side for hanging a shopping bag and we made a store sign (not pictured).

The play store has brought us hours of imaginative play!

Different Things We Added to the Pretend Grocery Store

• The Melissa and Doug Grocery Cart is sturdy and a great addition to our free play. We use it everyday.
• We stumbled upon a wooden conveyor belt that you could crank by hand. I can’t find anything like it to link to, but it wasn’t used very much.
• We added our toy cash register that we already had. 

This is a fun grocery store, but sometimes you need something extra and exciting to do with ALL of that toy food you’ve invested in, which is why I made these printable shopping lists. You could also use this set of printables at the grocery store as a scavenger hunt, an i-spy game, or an interactive shopping list.

These free Pretend Play Shopping Lists for kids have spiced up the kids’ pretend play in the kitchen and grocery store! and helps create a print-rich environment in our play area.

I laminated them so they can check things off of the list using dry erase markers and then reuse them in their imaginary play.

Your child will have so much fun collecting the grocery items on the list and put them in their shopping basket or bags. Cross the item off if it is out of stock (you don’t have that play food item). Sample September 1st School Shopping List

Grade 1 or High School – September 1st shopping list will have a lot in common. Let’s try to make a general shopping list that you can download, edit and take it to the store or buy online.

The end of July and the whole of August is the busiest time for parents of schoolchildren. It is obvious that we, parents, are preparing for the school season more than our children. I hope this article makes things a little easier.

I must say right away that the list that you can download below is more suitable for first graders and elementary school students. As a rule, parents of high school students already know from experience what and where to buy. But they can also use a template to make a list. It is easy to edit – add the necessary items and remove unnecessary ones.

Below I will tell you a little more about school purchases. I have identified several main areas:

1. Clothing

School uniforms are no longer required in most schools, but there are general dress code requirements in every institution that should be taken into account. Often, parents of a particular class agree, for example, on the general color of their children’s school clothes. Therefore, you should not buy clothes until you find out at the parent meeting what exactly you need.

It is worth considering that the children have the opportunity to combine clothes in accordance with their mood, weather conditions, etc. There are plenty to choose from – today there are a lot of offers. Pay attention, for example, to the online store Orby, which offers school clothes , accessories, as well as shoes, bags and backpacks.

Often there are promotions that make purchases more profitable. Prices become even more attractive if you make a group order and get a significant discount.

2. Necessary school accessories

This category includes school bags, change of clothes and shoes bags, backpacks, folders, pencil cases, as well as lunch boxes, water bottles or small thermoses. This also includes smart watches with a GPS beacon.

Similar things, like the clothes above, are better to choose together with the child – he will have to use these things almost every day, so let him do it with pleasure!

3. Stationery

It seems to be trifles, but the stationery is not such a cheap group of school goods, especially if we include educational literature and special notebooks here. It is better to buy small stationery all at once – often this way you can save both time and money.

4. Equipment for a school corner

Perhaps the most expensive group of products for organizing a schoolchildren’s workplace, and if you organize a schoolchildren’s corner from scratch, and leave the purchase of everything you need at the end of August, then it will definitely cost a pretty penny.

This includes: desk, chair, table lamp, pencil holder, book holder, bookshelf, computer and printer.

So, you can download the shopping list for school (word template) and make your own adjustments to it. Once you edit the list, you can print it out and take it with you so you don’t forget anything and you’re ready for the new school year on September 1st.

Baby feeding supplies

Be prepared to feed your baby around the clock – this means whether you’re breastfeeding or bottle feeding, you’ll need a lot of things to feed your baby. Here are the essentials:

• 8-10 bottles and teats
• Bottle brush
• Breast pump, milk storage bags, bra pads, nipple cream (if breastfeeding) or formula (if not breastfeeding)
• 4-8 bibs
• 4-8 regurgitation wipes
• Nursing pillow
• Bottle warmer
• Bottle Sterilizer

Baby Health Care Supplies:

Taking care of your child’s health always comes first, and to ensure that the necessary things are always at hand, you need to purchase:

• Baby thermometer
• Children’s first aid kit
• 4-6 teats

Creating A Safe Place for Black Parents

In 2014, Tunette Powell was featured in a video feature on CNN that discussed the preschool-to-prison pipeline that begins with the suspension of preschoolers. At that time and as of now, the rate of suspension of Black children and youth has been three times the number of white children and youth. Powell, who was then living in Omaha with her husband and two young sons, discussed the fact that her three-year-old had been suspended five times from preschool. 

“I was expelled from school when I was three-years-old,” Powell told CNN. “When I first got the phone call about [my son], I immediately thought back to that. 

“At a young age, I was told I was a bad kid in school… My biggest fear is that [my sons will] be labeled, and they’ll believe it.”

Despite these obstacles, Powell ended up achieving her bachelor’s degree in speech communication from the University of Nebraska Omaha, writing the book, “From Daddyless to Destiny: Finding Freedom in Your Story,” and even giving a TEDx Omaha talk on her experiences growing up with a drug-addicted father, and the encouragement she received from him to develop her gifts as a storyteller.  

This month Powell, a native of San Antonio, will graduate with her PhD in Urban Schooling from the UCLA Department of Education. She will also represent the Class of 2020 from that department as a commencement speaker during the virtual commencement celebration of the UCLA Graduate School of Education & Information Studies. 

Powell currently serves as the interim director of the UCLA Parent Empowerment Project, an initiative housed in UCLA’s Center X. She and Tonikiaa Orange, Ph.D., a lecturer and field supervisor in the Principal Leadership Institute at Center X, co-present a series of talks on Facebook Live titled, “Conversations for the Soul,” to provide a supportive and safe space for Black parents and their concerns in the COVID-19 pandemic environment. Their next event, titled, “For Black Mothers Parenting in the Pandemic that is Racism,” will take place at 6 p.m., PST on Friday, June 5, followed by “The Marathon Continues,” a special event in recognition of Fathers Day, at 6 p. m., PST on Friday, June 19. This date also marks Juneteenth, a holiday established in 1866, commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in Texas. 

Ampersand had the opportunity to have a conversation with Powell – now the mother of three sons – as she looks forward to taking a well-deserved breather after graduation, but also to launching her new research project on the experiences of Black parents in South Los Angeles, funded by The Eisner Foundation; teaching writing a community-based book on school suspension in early childhood education and to ensuring, as she says in the CNN clip, that her sons stay on a trajectory that is more “preschool to pre-med.” 

Ampersand: How has it been for you – about to become a newly minted PhD – taking on the responsibility of teaching your kids at home during these school closures due to the pandemic? 

Tunette Powell: I have a five-year-old, a nine-year-old, and a ten-year-old. And I am teaching 5 grade, 3 grade, and kindergarten. I’m very active at my kids’ school. I’m the president of the School Site Council and I’m even on the governing council. I know exactly what they need for next year. And even still, it has been and is still the most overwhelming experience of my life and I’ve experienced a lot in my life. But this has been very difficult. My emotions are all over the place. It’s so up and down.

And my kids go to an excellent school. Their school just won the California Distinguished Schools Award. So, they’re at a top school, and it is a mess. It’s not the way the teachers planned it, it’s not the way I planned it. I think my kids have done a really good job, the best they can, considering where we are but it has been tough.

&: Has this inspired any new threads in your research?

Powell: Yes! I think that a couple of things have happened. My research has been pretty much focused on school suspension in early childhood education – that’s what my dissertation is about. I’m mostly interested in thinking about collective trauma. Collective trauma is around this idea that when there’s a disaster, how does that damage and destroy those intimate bonds that we have with other people. This is how I study school suspensions.

We know that [the pandemic] will be another form of a collective trauma in time. And in some cases, it already is. There has been such a toll, not only when you think of lives lost, of sickness, and economically, but from a relationship standpoint. So, being able to capture some of those things has been really interesting.

It has also had me thinking about how we use social media and technology. I’m a person that really loves doing research in person. I’m a qualitative researcher more often than not, and I value being in the same space with other people, but that’s not the reality now. 

I have a lot of research projects that I’m going to be working on, and because I want to create that level of intimacy that we’ll be lacking [without] that in-person contact, I’ve started a “Conversations for the Soul” series, which is all about parenting during the pandemic.

We are hosting these twice a month. Our first one was, “Waiting to Exhale,” playing off the movie [title]. We just brought parents together, to have a moment to breathe and to be very vulnerable and very honest. Just getting people together and comfortable … sharing and being vulnerable in a safe space – these are some of the things I’ve been working through and that I think are going to be important as we think about humanizing [how] we do research going forward. 

&: How do “Conversations for the Soul” aim to capture and support the experiences of Black parents, particularly in our current COVID-19 environment?

Powell: There is a researcher named Walter Gilliam. He said that there is not just one COVID-19, meaning that all of the different inequities that already exist in society show up and are only further revealed in a pandemic. 

Considering right now what’s happening in the country as a result of police brutality, it has come to me that we have to help Black mothers all over the country. George Floyd, who was killed by a police officer [last] week, his last words… he said, “Momma.” Just thinking about what that means, as we’re going through a pandemic and worrying about the disproportionate number of deaths – Black bodies – everything is compounded when we think about the racialized experiences that we’re having in America.

So, we’re using our next [meeting] to really just uplift and give space to Black mothers everywhere, to come together to share. We have Black mothers who are going to be a part of this Facebook Live event all over the country. We have D.C., we have Georgia, we have Texas. And the whole idea is how do we give these parents spaces to share, feel, think though parenting in the COVID pandemic while also parenting in a racial pandemic.

&: Tell us about the work that is being supported by The Eisner Foundation.

Powell: I’ll be working on a project with Black families and the history of parenting in South Los Angeles. I am interested in how we think about research with and for communities that have been historically marginalized and how we can continue to push qualitative methods to support those communities, as well as how do we go on what we have right now and further humanize the experience, especially for people of color and other groups that have been marginalized.

There’s an intergenerational component. We’re going to have focus groups and interviews with Black parents of adult children and Black parents with young children. And the reason it’s become so important is because every time we talk about parent engagement with people who work at schools who are a little bit older, they always say, “Well, the reason we don’t have parent engagement is because we have young parents.”

And it’s interesting, because I ask, “Who is a young parent? Am I considered a young parent?” They say I am. I think there is a stigma or a single story about why parents are not engaged and sometimes age gets thrown into that. When I call them out and they say, “young parents,” then people will say, “You know what? It’s a lot of older parents who are not engaged either.” And then we could see that the issues are a little bit deeper than age. What I want to do with that work is to start thinking about what we can do as a collective to disrupt some of those issues.

If we want to build communities and [create] “village engagement,” I think we have to start being able to unpack and deal with some of these things as well.

&: How does it feel to represent the Class of 2020 during the GSE&IS virtual commencement?

Powell: There’s a part of me that … you feel like you wake up and maybe you realize that it was all just a dream because everything went by so fast. During the process, it felt like it was slow, but now that we’re here, it’s like, wow. How did I go from this parent who just wanted to share a story because I was so pissed off at the moment so, I wrote about it. And then it became a national story. That [CNN] video… my life just shifted after that. I wasn’t thinking about pursuing a PhD, or thinking about educational policy or how we transform public education – it’s just not where I was. And now, I’m getting a PhD. 

I feel so honored to be representing our department, it’s a huge honor for me. I’ve had great experiences at UCLA. I feel like this department is pushing back on a lot of traditional ways [of thinking] about what education is and what it could be. 

&: Who has helped you the most on your UCLA journey?

Powell: I would love to thank Dr. Amy Gershon and Harmeet Singh. They have been so important on my journey, in so many different ways. Making sure that they get a shout-out is really important for me. 

What they do day-in and day-out – I wouldn’t be here without them. I told Amy in my last email, “I feel like I always have a question for you, I’m sure you see my name way too much. ” They always give a quick response and always have the answers. The level of care they put into the work that they do is extremely important.

My advisor was Professor Kim Gomez – wow, just a qualitative guru. That was a beautiful thing for me, to be able to study under somebody who has the type of qualitative knowledge that she does, and who also gave me the freedom she did. I came into the program already a parent of three and I’d lived a full life, so it was a little different, advising me. So, I thank her for the guidance, but also for the freedom.

And Jaye Darby, who is an adjunct housed in Center X. In my dissertation, I used hip hop as a presentation method. Originally, my committee was like, “What? Why?” You have to have a specific reason on why you do something and I didn’t know if I had enough of a specific reason. I had it inside of me, but I didn’t know how to share that with others.

Jaye, who has been a real mentor while sharing office space with me in Center X,said, “Wow, Tunette, you already know why you have to do this,” and she just pulled it out of me. What she did for me was such a gamechanger. 

Hip hop has already been a storytelling method in the Black community, and so this was an appropriate and correct response. I’m doing qualitative research and it’s all about storytelling – why would I not use a storytelling method that is part of the community that I am writing about?

&: What are you looking forward to the most?

Powell: I’ll give myself a little bit of time to breathe. I’ve been working, I’ve been [in school], I’ve been wifing, I’ve been mothering. 

But one project that I’m really excited about is the UCLA Parent Project will be working with Black and Pink a national organization that works with LGBT people and people who are HIV-positive and have been formerly incarcerated or are incarcerated. 

We thought about parent engagement for parents who are incarcerated and what that looks like. My father was incarcerated when I was growing up, so there’s a piece of it that is personal for me. But also, it would be very interesting for us to explore parent engagement in its many different facets. If we want schools to be forward-thinking about parent engagement, we’ve got to be willing to think about all the many different forms and ways in which parents are engaged. 

&: What do you hope your sons – and your future students – take away from this moment in time, when you are graduating with your doctorate degree and on your way to a career in academia that will transform so many lives?

Powell: Freedom is the first word that comes to my mind. I want my kids and future students to have the freedom to choose and I believe we make choices based on what we know and what we see. I’ve given them another option, another choice. And to me, it doesn’t mean that any of them have to pursue PhDs. But just for them to know that someone they know did it and that they saw me do it my way – and that I did it for my community – this is what I hope they take away from it.

The Two Faces of Colin Powell – Mir – Kommersant

General Colin Powell is a former US Secretary of State who directed Washington’s foreign policy under President George W. Bush, and before that, the head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff died at the age of 84 from the effects of a coronavirus infection. The politician’s family reported this on Facebook, specifying that he had been vaccinated. “We have lost an outstanding husband, father, grandfather and a great American,” his relatives wrote. During his long career, Mr. Powell has time to become a symbol of the US military power, which was demonstrated in Afghanistan and Iraq, and at the same time the mistakes and weaknesses of Washington. An example of the latter was the famous demonstration in the UN Security Council meeting room of a test tube, which led many to believe that Saddam Hussein’s regime had biological weapons. Mr. Powell himself admitted a year later that the American intelligence data turned out to be inaccurate.

passed away this morning due to complications of COVID-19,” said the relatives of the diplomat and the military man, who can be called one of the architects of the existing world order.

This news made the American media immediately recall all the merits of Mr. Powell, calling him a “professional soldier” and “a diplomat who worked in an era of turbulence.” The racial issue, so sensitive for modern America, did not stand aside either – at one time, Mr. Powell was the highest-ranking African-American official. “The world has lost one of the greatest leaders we have ever seen. The first African American to head the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the first African American Secretary of State, a man who was respected around the world. To be honest, Colin Powell cannot be replaced, ”commented on his death the current head of the Pentagon, Lloyd Austin.

Colin Powell’s rise to power began with military service, first at an American base in West Germany and then in Vietnam. After graduating from the university after the war, he received a position at the Pentagon and an internship at the White House, which allowed the young employee to attend important events, including those with the participation of foreign leaders. As a result, in 1983 he became assistant to US Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger, and already in 1987 – national security adviser to President Ronald Reagan.

First of all, the name of Colin Powell is associated with the first term of George W. Bush. It was under him, in 2001-2005, that Mr. Powell headed the State Department. During these four years, perhaps the most important events in modern American history managed to happen in the United States: first, the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 occurred, and then military operations began in Afghanistan and Iraq. Both of these wars brought first quick military victories (with the capture of Kabul and Baghdad and the defeat of the enemy forces), and then turned into extremely unpopular campaigns that dragged on for many years.

After US troops left Iraq in 2011, the Islamic State terrorist group (banned in the Russian Federation) was formed there, and three years later the troops had to be returned back. The current President of the United States, Joe Biden, promises to complete the combat mission and replace it with a training one in the coming months.

As for Afghanistan, we had to leave it in August of this year literally in a matter of hours, shooting back from militants of the same “Islamic State” and concluding a situational alliance with another terrorist group – the Taliban (banned in the Russian Federation), which for 20 years and failed to win.

Colin Powell’s most memorable speech was at a meeting of the UN Security Council on February 5, 2003, when he took a vial of white powder out of his pocket, thereby convincing his colleagues that Iraq, led by dictator Saddam Hussein, possesses biological weapons.

However, a year later, Colin Powell himself admitted that he was wrong. “When I made the report in February 2003, I relied on the best information that the CIA provided me. We have carefully studied it and reviewed the sources of data on mobile laboratories for the production of weapons of mass destruction, based on trucks and trains. Unfortunately, over time, it turned out that the sources were inaccurate and incorrect, and in some cases deliberately misleading. I am deeply disappointed and sorry about this,” he said in a 2004 interview with NBC. It is also known that Mr. Powell was not in principle in favor of a military invasion of Iraq, instead proposing a policy of containment of Saddam Hussein.

This case became a dark spot on the biography of Colin Powell, a diplomat who was criticized both at home and abroad. And although President Bush was re-elected for a second term and remained in office until 2008, Mr. Powell left the post of Secretary of State. Under the following presidents, he never received any government post, although he continued to comment on political events. In particular, he consistently criticized the previous US President Donald Trump, and after his supporters stormed the Capitol in January 2021, he announced his withdrawal from the Republican Party, which he had been a member of for several decades.

Experts evaluated the messages of US Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell

Coronavirus continues to threaten economic stability, however, the regulator may start curtailing stimulating monetary policy as early as this year. This idea became key in the speech of the head of the US Federal Reserve System (FRS) Jerome Powell on Friday, August 27 at the annual conference in Jackson Hole.

Powell spoke via video link for only 20 minutes. The performance was watched live by over 15.5 thousand people – the banking and financial elite of the whole world. Everyone was waiting, if not for direct statements about the further steps of the regulator, then at least transparent hints about what the US Federal Reserve would do. For investors, it is believed that even the intonation of the speaker’s voice was important. Probably everyone heard their own, but one way or another, and by the end of Powell’s speech, the number of people watching and listening decreased. Apparently, some of them decided that nothing fateful had sounded.

The assessments of Russian experts interviewed by Gazeta.Ru also differ significantly. “Powell said nothing new. It can be assumed that it was decided to exercise caution against the backdrop of a surge in the incidence of coronavirus and not announce a reduction in asset purchases due to growing risks,” Alexey Tikhonov, managing director of the analytical department “Otkritie Research” of Otkritie Bank, assessed the speech of the head of the Fed.

On the whole, the speech was “exceptionally accurate and neutral,” says Yevgeny Vinokurov, chief economist at the Eurasian Development Bank and the Eurasian Fund for Stabilization and Development.

Chief Analyst of Sovcombank Mikhail Vasiliev disagrees with the previous experts. He believes that Powell’s performance was positive for the markets. “Jerome Powell did not come up with any hard surprises, so investors breathed a sigh of relief,” Vasilyev said.

1 Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa

One of California’s most beautiful missions, San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, was founded by Father Junipero Serra in 1772 and is dedicated to Saint Louis, Bishop of Toulouse in France. The current building dates back to 1793. The Spanish missionaries who arrived here called the area “La Canada de Los Osos” (“Bear Canyon”) because of the fact that the grizzly bears the native area. Father Serra decided that La Canada de Los Osos would be the ideal location for his mission because of its mild climate, abundant fresh water, and food (including bear meat). Another advantage was that the local Chumash (Indian) tribe was friendly to the missionaries.

Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa is a large complex overlooking San Luis Creek and Mission Square in a quiet countryside location. Typical of the Spanish missions, the building was built of mud and has ported arcades. A lush garden is planted at the back of the courtyard. Mission Church is one of the most ornate historic missions in California. With a simple altar and high ceilings supported by wooden beams, the sanctuary has a serene atmosphere. The brightly colored floral pattern along the walls and archway gives the church interior a cheerful feel. The mission also has an interesting museum with several rooms displaying artifacts and art, including a 17th century painting of Italy by Mater Dolorosa from Italy. Other exhibits teach visitors about the history of the Spanish missionaries who moved here from Mexico, and an entire room is dedicated to the history and culture of the local Indian people in the area. Another attraction is the gift shop, which sells unique gifts such as handmade sets, colorful Mexican home decorations, and images depicting saints.

2 Thursday Night Farmers Market

San Luis Obispo is famous for its Thursday Night Farmers Market, which draws crowds from all over San Luis County. Obispo. The SLO Farmers Market is considered one of the best in California. This special event is held at Iguera Street which closes access to vehicular traffic between Nipomo Street and Osos Street. Locals come to the store for fresh produce, while out-of-town visitors enjoy street food. 3 Pismo Beach

This classic California beach town boasts 23 miles of sandy shore. The sunny, laid-back city has a Southern California feel, even though it’s in the middle of the Central Coast. Surfers and bodyboarders love Pismo Beach for its consistent waves. During the summer, the beach has a lively scene of surfers, sunbathers and volleyball players; and lifeguards on duty. Other favorite activities include walking and fishing 1200 foot Fishing which also has picnic tables with stunning ocean views. Perfect for summer vacations or just fun in the sun, Pismo Beach offers everything visitors need. Many hotels, surf shops, delis, cafes and fish and chip restaurants are packed into the main town center overlooking the beach.

Pismo Beach enjoys a warm, sunny climate year-round with average temperatures between 68 and 78 degrees Fahrenheit. During July and August temperatures can reach high 90-s. However, the beach tends to be windy which makes it cooler and awesome for kite flying. Near the beach, Avila is more sheltered from the wind. Pismo Beach is a 15 minute drive from San Luis Obispo, which can be reached by RTA bus from the government center. The bus stops at Pismo Beach Premium Outlets, about 20 minutes walk, partly next to the highway, to the beach.

Pismo Beach – in addition to swimming, surfing and bodyboarding, it is a great place for swimming and kayaking. Lifeguards on duty during the summer. When conditions are right, snorkeling is possible, and whale watching is popular during the migratory season. 4 San Luis Obispo Historic Center

Because of its historic Spanish-style buildings and attractive tree-lined streets, San Luis Obispo is often compared to Santa Barbara, an elegant city that was also built around an 18th-century mission. Downtown San Luis Obispo is centered around Higuera Street , a lively area full of restaurants, shops and cafes. Children will love Doc Bernstein , which features exhibits on how ice cream is made and offers ice cream flavor tastings. On the side facing north of Higuera, restaurants offer back patios that open onto San Luis Obispo Creek . San Luis Obispo’s funniest and most famous attraction is Bubblegum Alley (off Higuera Street), a narrow lane 70 feet long, plastered with countless pieces of already chewed bun in many colors.

A great place to plan your stay in San Luis Obispo is at Visitor Center , at 895 Monterey Street. Nearby is the main RTA Bus Terminal , across from the old county government center at Osos and Palm Streets. The RTA bus is convenient for getting around the area to top tourist destinations including Pismo Beach, Avila Beach, Arroyo Grande, Morro Bay and Hearst Castle. Near the mission is a small, historic Chinatown , with shops and restaurants.

5 Avila Beach

Avila Beach is seven miles north of Pismo Beach in a sheltered bay in San Luis Obispo Bay. This scenic beach tends to be warmer than near Pismo Beach because the surrounding hills shelter it from the wind. Another draw is palm boardwalk lined with shops and restaurants with outdoor terraces. Avila Beach is an easy 10 mile train (15 minutes) south of San Luis Obispo. In the summer, you can get there by public transport – first a 20-minute drive to the Pismo Beach Outlets bus stop, and then a 10-minute Trolley bus to Avila Beach.

Avila Beach has a wide coastline, gorgeous scenery and fine white sands that make walking barefoot delightful. It’s also perfect for sunbathing, swimming and bodybuilding or just splashing in the water. Other outdoor activities include fishing from the pier, kayaks and kayaks. The gentle waves of Avila Beach are too easy for experienced surfers, but they have surf school . The relatively calm ocean atmosphere helps beginner surfers learn. Lifeguards are on duty during the summer. Families with children will also appreciate the well-maintained community facilities, small playground and picnic tables. Pet owners can take their dogs to the beach after hours, before 10am and after 5pm. Summer is the best time to visit, however Avila Beach is beautiful in all seasons. If you are planning to visit in the spring, try to coordinate the time from Blues Festival in May or Oyster Festival in early June.

6 Avila Hot Springs

At Avila Hot Springs, visitors can enjoy a day of relaxation and rejuvenation in an idyllic setting a few miles from the beach. The hot springs are located right at the motorway exit on the way to Avila Beach, so visitors can easily drive before or after leaving for the beach. Avila Hot Springs can also be reached by bus, taking the same trolley that goes to Avila Beach. Cyclists can Bob Jones Bike Path , a scenic route from San Luis Obispo. Founded in 1907, the springs have a 20 x 20 foot healing pool filled with fresh mineral water from the hot springs of Avila. These spring waters are known to the indigenous people of the Salinans for their ability to heal diseases. Avila Hot Springs also has a vintage game room , a freshwater pool with slides for kids, a picnic area and massage treatments. For a night out in the open air, Avila Hot Springs offers campsites and cabins.

7 Shell Beach

This quiet, secluded sandy beach is ideal for relaxation. True to its name, the beach shimmers with shells washed up on the shore. Nature lovers come here to explore the tide pools where they can see crabs and starfish, while kayakers appreciate the gentle waters around the beach. Shell Beach also offers a prime spot for spotting sea lions, dolphins and migratory whales. Other favorite activities are picnics and rock fishing while enjoying breathtaking sea views.

8 Oceano Dunes

Oceano Dunes is the only beach in California that allows OHV (Off-Road Vehicle) driving. This public automobile resort area consists of 1,200 acres of unique coastal terrain, including open sand dunes and miles of sandy beach. Some of the sloping sand dunes reach 100 feet. The recreation area offers an ATV Safety Certificate course and allows a daily ride on the beach with a limited number of cars. Other outdoor activities at Oceano Dunes include hiking, horseback riding, bird watching, and camping.

9 San Luis Obispo Museum of Art

The San Luis Obispo Museum of Art is a fine collection of contemporary works by California artists. The exhibitions feature avant-garde paintings, sculptures and photographs. Constantly updated exhibitions are presented in an insightful manner that promotes a deeper understanding and appreciation of the art. 10 Bishop’s Peaks
