Uniforms for Kids — Society of St. Vincent de Paul Baton Rouge

Join us in providing school uniforms to children in need by making a financial gift to buy new uniforms!  Or you can donate gently used uniforms at one of our drop off locations listed below.

Look at the beautiful faces and the smiles of the children on this page.  It’s impossible to capture the essence of who they are – their innocence, their personalities, hopes and fears – but the camera has recorded a special moment in time, a brief period of distraction from the problems of poverty.  These photos were taken in the midst of selecting new school uniforms at St. Vincent de Paul.

Before coming to us, these children – Aimee, Cade, Jay, and Annie – and so many others – were afraid they would have to suffer the embarrassment of beginning the school year without the proper attire.

The children we will serve through the Uniforms for Kids Program face obstacles that many adults would find overwhelming.   Their homes are not a refuge from the stress of today’s world.  Many of them live in neighborhoods where it’s not safe to play outside.  They know what it’s like to live without electricity when there’s not enough money to pay utility bills.  Too many of them have known real hunger.  Unfortunately, most of them have faced the ridicule of other children because of the clothes they wear.

In today’s difficult economy, low-income families are struggling just to keep their heads above water.  These families are engaged in a desperate struggle to keep up with rising food, rent and utility costs, and clothes for growing children are at the bottom of the list.

As we prepare for the coming school year, our goal is to distribute 18,000 uniforms to 9,000 needy kids, and we hope you will join in our efforts to help needy children in our community.  The cost for one uniform is $12.00 and we want to give two uniforms to each child.

Through this effort, you can remove one obstacle from their lives.   By providing school uniforms, you can enable children in need to start the school year with a smile and their heads held high.  For every child you help, they will feel your love and care when they start the new school year.

This year, the demand for uniforms is greater than ever.  Because of the economy, financial donations are at the lowest level they have been in years, and we really need your help.

If you are able to help with this year’s uniform effort, please do so.  Or, if you want to support our feeding or sheltering efforts, your help would also be greatly appreciated by those we serve.

You can help us by making a financial gift HERE.

On behalf of Aimee, Cade, Jay, and Annie, and the thousands of other children in need, we thank you for your past support and ask you to again join us in extending a hand of compassion to the most vulnerable in our community.  Together, we really can change the world for those we serve.

This year, WAFB Channel 9, Our Lady of Lake Children’s Health, First American Bank & Trust, the Greater Baton Rouge State Fair Foundation, the Albemarle Foundation, and St. Vincent de Paul will come together to give a hand-up to our community’s neediest children by providing the school uniforms they need.

You can also donate clean used uniforms to this wonderful effort.

On behalf of all those we serve through our critical community programs, we thank you in advance for consideration of our request.  Be assured every used or new uniform donation makes a real difference.  Help us spread the word!

Although school uniforms help make the process of getting dressed a no-brainer, finding the right pieces that perfectly coordinate with your child’s faculty guidelines can be difficult. Thankfully, stores have caught on to the fact that more schools are requiring strict dress codes and they’re making it easier than ever to shop for the curricular year. Below, we’ve gathered a list of the best places to find those perfect polos, chinos, skirts, and button-downs—so the hardest part of your shopping experience will be deciding which backpack to buy!

The Children’s Place. Visit the brand’s School Uniforms HQ to find a sea of polos and dresses in dozens of popular school colors (navy, red, hunter green) to more unexpected hues (fuchsia and lavender). Plus, khaki pants, shorts, and skirts galore and other accessories, from headbands and bows to socks and sneakers. Overall, it amounts to hundreds of styles to get the job done, from toddler sizes on up!

Old Navy. Old Navy is a no-brainer for affordable, stylish uniforms for kids and teens in a wide variety of colors. Some items start at just $10, meaning at the rate kids grow, you won’t mind if you have to replace polos, chinos, or sweaters year after year.

Lands’ End. Lands’ End is a go-to for high-quality, durable back-to-school basics. The site also lets you create a student profile for fast, easy shopping. Just select the “Find My School” option, and it will help you shop according to your kid or teen’s school guidelines. Plus, unlike many online retailers, Lands’ End offers at least 10 kinds of plaid!

Target. Easy, cute, and affordable are the words that come to mind when we shop Target’s uniform section. You can find brands such as Eddie Bauer, Cat & Jack, and even French Toast here, all at good prices. From regular khakis and shoes to cat-printed socks, there’s a little something for every A+ student. Bonus points: Target offers a new and inclusive range of adaptive school uniforms!

JCPenney. Hundreds of name-brand school uniform options can be found at JCPenney, from Izod to Dickies. The store hosts regular sales and special offers, too, so don’t forget to check to get the best bang for your buck! Plus, their polos come in 16 colors.

French Toast. This company has been a leader in school uniforms since 1958. Here you’ll find an array of mix-and-match options for kids of all ages, from regular vests and cardigans to cute jumpers and blazers. They even offer uniform-approved accessories. The site has a “School Dress Code Locator” feature that helps you shop either generic or specific school-approved colors and styles.

Kohl’s. This national chain features a large assortment of budget-friendly, school-appropriate options for your little ones all the way up to your teens. Items range from petite to plus-size polos (in over a dozen colors) to chinos, dresses, plaid skorts, and even shoes for all ages.

American Eagle. Geared towards teens, AE has a variety of separates that allow older kids to infuse one’s uniform with personality. From slouchier button-ups and plaid mini-skirts to cardigans and khakis cut in a variety of silhouettes. Think Clueless and Gossip Girl vibes!

Tea Collection. Tea Collection consistently sells a wide variety of pants in classic colors and modern silhouettes that could work for uniforms—we love their cotton and canvas joggers in olive, navy, and khaki, as well as the brand’s slim chino that goes up to size 16.

Maisonette. This modern retailer is also lacking an official “uniform” shop, but does include many uniform-like pieces, including design-forward chinos, solid-colored sweat sets, and lots of plaid dresses and accessories. Take a look at the in-house Maison Me label for the best prices (and frequent sales).

J.Crew Factory. While not the heartiest of offerings, spin-off label J.Crew Factory has preppy, uniform-like options for boys, including polos, blazers, slacks, button-downs, and ties.

arguments for and against why school uniforms are worn

Arguments for school uniforms

1.

Uniform disciplines

One of the arguments why a school uniform is needed is that it inspires a child with a sense of discipline. Adult life is cited as an example – most professions imply clear rules for dressing, whether it’s working in an office, a police station or a fire station.

2. Children do not envy each other

The advantage of a school uniform is that it provides some kind of social equality. If without a dress code, guys can show off with bright clothes or branded items, then everyone is unified with the uniform. However, opponents of the form have a counterargument – we will tell a little further.

3. No need to think about what to wear

Another reason why you need a school uniform is to reduce the time for morning preparations and not distract you from thinking like: “Which is cooler – that purple sweatshirt or a T-shirt with the Fortnite logo?”. The child always knows what clothes to iron for tomorrow, and does not beg for new things to show off in front of classmates.

4. Feeling of unity

Prestigious schools in the UK and the US require school uniforms to show belonging to a particular educational institution. So the guys distinguish between “their” and “strangers”. From time immemorial, there has been a struggle and confrontation for elite between schools and even universities – and the uniform shows which camp you are from.

Arguments “against” school uniform

1. Pushes into the box

As a rule, school uniform does not provide a field for self-expression. And it also gives scope for endless nit-picking on the part of the administration – the shirt is not the same, the jacket is not the same, why not in a skirt. Instead of focusing on learning, teachers spend time lecturing about appearance.

2. There are still reasons to envy

Social inequality exists in society, and it cannot be eradicated by uniformity in clothing. Different wealth of families still manifests itself in sophisticated gadgets, travel photos and posts on social networks. It is better to teach children that human qualities are more important than the well-being of the family. Imposing the same dress code will not solve the problem.

3. Not always comfortable to wear

Sitting for seven lessons in a restrictive jacket or meticulously examining a chair each time, being afraid to leave snags on tights, is not the most interesting thing to do. Do I need to wear a school uniform when you can wear comfortable jeans with a sweatshirt and not be distracted from the lesson?

4. Most children don’t like it

The main argument against school uniforms is that it’s hard to find a child who says, “I love uniforms! I would wear it all the time!” Most likely, the motivation to study is higher if the student likes the way he looks. For teenagers, appearance is especially important – they want freedom and self-expression, and not a corporate atmosphere.

What to do if you don’t like borders

There are many ways to avoid the business dress code, from changing schools to home schooling. Guys who become cramped within the etiquette imposed by the school often take away their documents and start studying at home.

Alyona Rudenko, a graduate of Foxford’s home online school, did this — she was shamed at school for her rainbow hair.

Alena Rudenko, graduate of the Foxford External and Home School

“The decision to leave the school was sudden and quite abrupt. Parents were afraid, but supported, and I breathed a sigh of relief – no one else will scold me for my multi-colored hair and drawings in the classroom.

Controversial issue: 7 pros and cons of school uniforms

Family and children

The 1st of September is coming soon, which parents, perhaps, are waiting for with more excitement than children. And the main problem is the school uniform. So all the same, is it good when the school adheres to a uniform uniform or not? Let’s weigh the arguments for and against.

Social status

FOR:

One of the tasks of the school uniform is to unite children of different social status. Uniform criteria for appearance should help to avoid many unpleasant provocations in the spirit of “who has the coolest parents.” Children learn to evaluate each other by personal qualities, but not by the financial situation of the family, filling the wardrobe or wallet. When choosing a school uniform, society makes sure that children have less conflict, and it is easier for newcomers to adapt to the class.

AGAINST:

Differences in family income will still show up. In addition to the kit, there are also shoes, outerwear, telephone and gadgets. Children go to visit each other, talk about who and where is resting. The form is not able to “equalize” these indicators. In addition, there is an opinion among child psychologists that hidden social inequality does not benefit the child. It exists in society, and the form is only an attempt to “disguise” it artificially. The task of parents and teachers is to teach children to adequately accept different circumstances and put human qualities in the first place, and not the cost of clothes.

Development of personality

PRO:

Developing taste, style and individual approach to clothing requires much more effort than just letting the child wear what he wants. This is a combination of many factors in which daily exemplary clothing plays a far from paramount role. It is important to travel with children, to develop in them a sense of beauty. The family should have a desire to at least from time to time arrange a cultural program on weekends and go to museums. If school clothes is one way to express yourself and emotionally discharge, why not do it on weekends , and in a suitable cultural setting?

AGAINST:

School uniform kills any manifestation of individuality. From childhood, a person must learn to organize his appearance, master etiquette, dress comfortably, appropriately. The child should have the opportunity to think and evaluate what more fits the definition of decency, severity and modesty: torn jeans, a T-shirt with a stupid inscription, or something else. Parents should teach children to dress appropriately for the situation, and not just give instructions. And this is a big job. If you want to get away from these important family responsibilities, shifting all the responsibility for the formation of taste to a “third party”, the form is the easiest solution.

Discipline

FOR:

Uniform helps the child to better control emotions, behavior, and maintain discipline. In most cases, the school uniform for boys and girls includes a jacket or jacket. This type of clothing, its style, in which there is a fixed line of shoulders and lapels on the chest, as they say, “holds its shape” – it sends a signal to the body to straighten the back, to make more restrained movements. Such clothes create a certain psychological mood: the student understands that, having put on the uniform, he is not going to rest, but to study. For the same purpose, companies use a dress code.

AGAINST:

School uniform makes children feel constrained, not disciplined, and in many ways limits their freedom , does not give important emotions an outlet. Most of the time a child spends in an educational institution, and a business suit often does not create a feeling of convenience, comfort and naturalness and relaxedness, important at his age, during active movement, communication or games.

Cost

FOR:

Having bought a strict set, you do not need to think about what to dress your child in. This is undoubtedly a plus for parents. A neat and versatile option is always at the ready. In addition, it costs the family less than 3-5 options for everyday clothes.

AGAINST:

In fact, a good school uniform is always expensive . At least taking into account the fact that in a week the child manages to stain clothes several times, sometimes bringing them into a completely unusable state. Buying a few pairs of denim trousers and a dozen jackets / t-shirts / sweaters is an order of magnitude cheaper than four uniform sets. Otherwise, it will have to be erased endlessly. In addition, the clothes you buy (not the uniform) will be suitable for other activities, not just school activities.

Business attire

FOR:

Business suit is an important status element of modern society. As a child, he brings up a sense of style in the child, which can be useful to him in his work. The child gets used to choosing business clothes for himself in everyday life.

AGAINST:

Your child may not need to wear a formal suit to work. You should not decide in advance for him how he should dress in the future and how to live in general. In addition, it must be remembered that a strictly limited style and style of clothing are not for everyone. The difference in physique, which can be hidden by choosing the right jeans and knitwear for the child, is only emphasized by the uniform, which gives rise to many reasons for ridicule from classmates and the development of complexes.

Corporate spirit

FOR:

School uniform is the prerogative and hallmark of elite educational institutions. Pupils of prestigious gymnasiums and lyceums always looked neat and intelligent. The eminent Oxford and Cambridge have their own uniform. With the introduction of compulsory school uniforms, the school raises its status.

AGAINST:

This is a disguise for the real situation at the school. If we exaggerate the situation, it turns out that without a uniform, the school has absolutely nothing to be proud of? It is hardly better to portray that our standards are like in “elite Europe” than to create such an atmosphere and environment that students will love and be proud of even without a uniform.
