Teaching Kids About Veterans Day: Resources and Ideas

Veterans Day is an opportunity to honor and give thanks to those who have served or are serving in the military. Sandwiched between the excitement of Halloween and Thanksgiving, this day can sometimes go unnoticed by kids, but I do like teaching kids about Veterans Day and start to help them understand its significance. There are some very simple and age-appropriate ways we can teach young kids to show respect and appreciation to veterans. Here are some Veterans Day activities, teaching resources, and even some free printables.

Talk with Kids About Veterans

Help kids understand who veterans are. Adults often describe veterans as soldiers, people who wear uniforms, and live on military bases. Of course, these things are true, but they can be very abstract for kids who aren’t familiar with military families. And it is likely that kids encounter many veterans on a regular basis; they just might not realize it.

Last year I was so moved by a Veterans Day speech given by a friend and coworker. She is now a kindergarten teacher, and nobody would guess she was a veteran or the memories she carries with her if they didn’t know her personally. She reminded all of the kids at our school that veterans are everywhere. They are our teachers, custodians, postal workers, doctors, and store clerks. And we can thank them personally on Veterans Day and every day for their service to our country.

You might consider talking with your kids about:

  • People they know who are veterans (family, friends, school staff, church members, etc)
  • The job of a soldier (what it’s like to be a soldier)
  • Things soldiers sacrifice to keep our country free (family time, holidays, special events with their children, personal safety)
  • Freedoms that we have as Americans

Say Thank You

Be a model for your children. When you see a veteran, simply say, “Thank you.” Our kids learn from us. Talk with them about why you say thank you to the soldier at the grocery store and the soldier you pass in the airport. It is such a simple act of gratitude, but it means a lot.

Grab this free printable Veteran’s Day easy reader to learn more about the branches of the military and create a thank you page for veterans.

Use this free printable Thank You note template to send a thank you note to veterans.

Make a Card or Baked Goods for a Veteran

Kids can also make cards to say thank you to veterans they know. Even pre-writers can make a simple card with sticky foam letters or by simply coloring a background that an adult can write on. If you live close to a veteran, you could even help your child make some cookies or another treat to deliver.

Attend a Ceremony or Parade

Many cities or schools host Veterans Day ceremonies or parades. Check your local community calendars to find out which ones might be best to take your kids to. We are looking forward to attending the Veterans Ceremony in our local area this weekend.

Or you could even create your own pretend parade! We made this super easy soldier craft one year as part of our Veterans day activities.

Support a Soldier

Soldier’s Angels is one organization dedicated to supporting soldiers. There are many opportunities to get involved, including sending cards, care packages, and more.

You can also contact a local organization to ask about helping veterans in your own community. The Military Wife and Mom shares a list of items you might consider adding to a care package.

Learn a Veterans Day Song or Poem

Songs for Teaching has a long list of songs to choose from.

Apples 4 the Teacher shares some poetry and rhymes.

Your kids might also like to draw a picture to go along with the song or poem you are learning together.

Read Together

Read a picture book about veterans or visit one of the websites below with your child. We enjoyed reading these books this week.

Hero Dad by Melinda Hardin

H Is for Honor: A Millitary Family Alphabet by Devin Scillian

See our full list of books to read for Veterans Day here.

Kids Thank a Vet includes many resources to help kids learn more about veterans. There are pictures of famous veterans, book lists, activities, and much more.

Make Connections

In many parts of the world Veterans Day is called Rememberance Day, and the poppy is used as a symbol of this special day. Help kids connect that these two observances are the same, and learn a bit more about the significance of the poppy.

You might plant some poppies and learn to carry for them, or create a poppy craft.

You might try making a field of torn paper poppies,

displaying beautiful poppy suncatchers,

or creating coffee filter poppies.

Sharing Veterans Day with Young Learners

What is Veterans Day anyway? Young children can easily confuse Veterans Day, Memorial Day and Labor Day. Each of these celebrations comes with minimal time allocation practice in the classroom and homeschool platforms. Mostly in part because it is a nationally recognized holiday, and in the United States students have the day off.

It is important to take some time to share about all of our national holidays. Veterans Day is one of the most important days to highlight, because without the bravery and dedication of our American soldier we would not experience the freedom of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness granted by our forefathers.

Veterans Day is not the same as Memorial Day, so many people get these confused and think the meanings of the holidays are interchangeable. This is NOT the case Memorial Day honors those who have served and have passed away. Veterans Day honors those who have served and are still living. To learn more about Veterans Day check out this article written by Katie Lange from the Department of Defense called “5 Facts to Know About Veterans Day.”

We always start with some good books and this topic is a little tricky to find books for.  So here are a few recommended books:

Dad Hero by Melinda Hardin – This is a great story that compares a soldier, who is the dad, to a superhero.  The sentences are simple and the story is very powerful. I highly recommend this book.

Hero Mom by Melina Hardin – Same as above, but the mom is the main character.  LOVE these books.

Veterans:  Heroes in Our Neighborhood by Aaron Anderson – I love this book. It starts off with a class welcoming members of the community who are veterans into their classrooms.  Each person who visits gets to talk about what they did as a soldier and what they do now in the neighborhood.  This is a very appropriate kindergarten book that is told all through rhymes.

This is such a good unit to use real photos with.  Especially our Nonfiction Veterans Day Readers with Activities.  Each page talks about different things veterans face or deal with and have a matching real photo.  All of the topics are kindergarten-appropriate and really help explain why we celebrate our veterans with a special day.  Click here to see more.

From there it is fun to make something, isn’t that the best part when you are a kindergartener.  Click here to see more!

You can always, of course, just do them as a craft too. They are made with the kindergartener in mind so the cuts are easy and there is not too many pieces to assemble and prep.

We also found some fun songs for Veterans Day!

Veterans Day by PBS Learning (1:16)

The Poppy Song for Kids by Kidboomers (1:14)

This is a fun, catchy little song to help kids learn to say thank you to our veterans.

A Veterans Day Message by Sesame Street (0:59)

A great little message about how Veterans Day is not just about veterans but their families too!

You’re A Grand Old Flag by Kidboomers (1:48)

What better time to teach your students about patriotism and our flag.  This song goes super slow so the kids can easily catch on!

Star Spangled Banner by Kidboomers (1:26)

Another great patriot song that is nice and slow for your students to easily learn.

Every year we also do this big community project to honor the veteran and those currently serving in the military.  We send home these hearts and the families fill them out so that every person who is serving or has served has a heart on our campus.  I send home a couple and ask families to tell me if they need more.  (There are always some who need lots).  It’s great to see the campus overflowing with these hearts. Get them below!

We also incorporate some writing by making a card thanking a veteran.  These are great to put in a writing center or do as a class after reading one of those great books.  Click here to download this for free too.

Serpukhov | Letter of congratulations from veterans on Children’s Day (video)

Photo: smitanka.ru

Compared to other holidays, Children’s Day is considered quite young. However, among international it is recognized as one of the oldest.
The holiday owes its appearance to the event that took place on June 1, 1925. On this day, the Chinese Consul organized a holiday for children in San Francisco (USA). The festival called “Duan-u dze” was intended for children who lost parental care. At the same time, a conference was held in Geneva aimed at solving the problems of the younger generation.
Until the middle of the 20th century, in many countries of the world, children were deprived of their rights. For example, in the legislation of some countries, the death penalty was extended to juvenile delinquents. Child labor was also brutally exploited, children worked on an equal footing with adults, for example, in “civilized” England of the 18th century, children were forced to work in mines for 12 hours.
Abuse, violence and juvenile delinquency led to the 1949 Women’s Congress in Paris raising the issue of child protection. And 1 June 1950 years for the first time was held a holiday called Children’s Day.
The purpose of the holiday is to solve the problems of children that exist even in the most developed countries.
While the children of Africa and Asia are at risk of hunger and disease, well-to-do children have a number of problems associated with computer addiction. In our country, they are concerned about the penetration of Western values, and the population of Western Europe considers the sexual life of adolescents too early.
Children’s Day is a reminder that children should not be forgotten. The opportunity to protect the younger generation from aggression, physical violence, slave labor – this is what this holiday reminds of.
On this day, many countries traditionally hold protests and rallies against abortion.
Special attention is paid to orphans and the disabled. A huge number of volunteers visit hospitals, orphanages to give children a little care and pay attention to those who have no parents.
Children’s Day has a flag recognized by many countries around the world.
The green background represents fertility and harmony.
The globe is a planet, a common home for all children.
Multi-colored men around the planet are a symbol of the equality of children of different races.
The idea of the holiday was supported by the United Nations (UN). Parents, government agencies and non-governmental organizations were encouraged to recognize their responsibility in the upbringing of children. However, this document had no legal force and the first legal document on children’s rights is considered to be the Convention, signed in 1990 by 61 countries. The document contained 54 articles that dealt with the rights of children and the obligations of parents.
In the Soviet Union, where attention was paid to the protection of childhood from the first days, June 1, like today, is the day the summer holidays begin. Adults talked about the well-being of children, and children rejoiced at the first day of summer. Screenings of new films were held, various competitions and sports competitions were held, in which parents also took part.
In 1998, Russia approved the Federal Law aimed at protecting the rights of the child. This law established a number of guarantees protecting the interests of children.
Thus, the state recognizes the childhood years of life as the most important stage in the formation of personality, the education of patriotism of every citizen of the country. Preparation for a full life and the development of creative activity, morality are recognized as important elements in the upbringing of children.
Among the amendments to the Constitution, a special place is given to children, who are the most important priority of the state policy of Russia. The state, ensuring the priority of family education, assumes the duties of parents in relation to children left without care.
In the Russian Federation, a holiday dedicated to children is held under the patronage of the Children’s Fund.
On this day, we must remember that the most important right of children is the right to LIFE!!!
This right may be taken away from them by war.

The war that is now going on in Ukraine and in other parts of the world. Our ancestors defended our right to life with you. This happened 77 years ago. This must not be forgotten! We must always remember this! Remember and never give up. Fight for the life and spiritual well-being of our children in difficult modern days!

Kids Depot is such a great school. I enrolled my 2 year old about a month ago after having her at another school for 2 months. At her previous school she cried most of the day for all 2 months and the center would often call me to pick her up early. The teachers at Kids Depot quickly attended to her and made her feel welcomed. After only 2 weeks she was well adjusted and asking for “school mommy school.” Seeing her excitement and love for the teachers made me feel like Kids Depot was the PERFECT choice for my baby girl.

Apache2 Debian Default Page: It works

Apache2 Debian Default Page

This is the default welcome page used to test the correct
operation of the Apache2 server after installation on Debian systems.
If you can read this page, it means that the Apache HTTP server installed at
this site is working properly. You should replace this file (located at
/var/www/html/index.html) before continuing to operate your HTTP server.

If you are a normal user of this web site and don’t know what this page is
about, this probably means that the site is currently unavailable due to
maintenance.
If the problem persists, please contact the site’s administrator.

Debian’s Apache2 default configuration is different from the
upstream default configuration, and split into several files optimized for
interaction with Debian tools. The configuration system is
fully documented in
/usr/share/doc/apache2/README.Debian.gz
. Refer to this for the full
documentation. Documentation for the web server itself can be
found by accessing the manual if the apache2-doc
package was installed on this server.

The configuration layout for an Apache2 web server installation on Debian systems is as follows:

/etc/apache2/
|-- apache2.conf
| `-- ports.conf
|-- mods-enabled
| |-- *.load
| `-- *.conf
|-- conf-enabled
| `-- *.conf
|-- sites-enabled
| `-- *.conf

  • apache2.conf is the main configuration
file. It puts the pieces together by including all remaining configuration
files when starting up the web server.
  • ports. conf is always included from the
main configuration file. It is used to determine the listening ports for
incoming connections, and this file can be customized anytime.
  • Configuration files in the mods-enabled/,
    conf-enabled/ and sites-enabled/ directories contain
particular configuration snippets which manage modules, global configuration
fragments, or virtual host configurations, respectively.
  • They are activated by symlinking available
    configuration files from their respective
*-available/ counterparts. These should be managed
    by using our helpers

    a2enmod,
    a2dismod,

    a2ensite,
    a2dissite,

    and

    a2enconf,
    a2disconf
. See their respective man pages for detailed information.

  • The binary is called apache2. Due to the use of
environment variables, in the default configuration, apache2 needs to be
    started/stopped with /etc/init.d/apache2 or apache2ctl.
Calling /usr/bin/apache2 directly will not work with the
    default configuration.

By default, Debian does not allow access through the web browser to
any file apart of those located in /var/www,
public_html
directories (when enabled) and /usr/share (for web
applications). If your site is using a web document root
located elsewhere (such as in /srv) you may need to whitelist your
document root directory in /etc/apache2/apache2. conf.

The default Debian document root is /var/www/html. You
can make your own virtual hosts under /var/www. This is different
to previous releases which provides better security out of the box.

Please use the reportbug tool to report bugs in the
Apache2 package with Debian. However, check existing bug reports before reporting a new bug.
