Jim Carrey – biography, photo, personal life, children, best roles, height and weight 2022

Biography of Jim Carrey

Jim Carrey (full name James Eugene Carrey) is a Canadian-American comic actor, screenwriter and producer. Known to the general public for the films The Mask, Ace Ventura, Dumb and Dumber, Liar, Liar, Bruce Almighty, The Truman Show, Man in the Moon, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Two-time Golden Globe winner, multiple MTV Movie Award winner, BAFTA nominee. Few can resist his lively facial expressions and powerful charisma.

Jim Carrey, comedy star

Childhood

Jim Carrey was born on January 17, 1962 in Newmarket, Canada. The family did not live well: mother Kathleen Kerry (née Oram) was a singer in her youth, and then became a housewife, and father Percy Kerry failed to make a career as a saxophonist and went to work as an accountant to support the family.

Parents raised Jim, his older sisters Pat and Rita and brother John in the Catholic religion. When Jim was in school, his father was fired, and the family had to move to the town of Scarborough, where Percy found work as a security guard in a factory that produced car wheels. In the evenings after school, all four children worked part-time at the same factory as cleaners.

Childhood photo of Jim Carrey

Living in such a regime was hard, and one day the Kerry family decided to quit this job – even though they lost their housing because of this and were forced to live in a trailer for some time.

Jim Carrey before becoming a famous comedian

In the end, the father got a job at the Dofasco steel mill in the port city of Hamilton, Ontario, the family settled in the nearby town of Burlington, and prosperous times began. Jim lived here for 8 years, graduated from Aldershot High School, organized the Spoons musical group, and after school went to work at the same factory.

If I had not had a career in show business, then I would probably still be working in Hamilton at the Dofasco foundry today. As a child, I looked at these workshops and thought: “This is where the most beautiful work happens.”

But no less acutely young Jim dreamed of becoming an actor – he loved to “grimacing”, to amuse classmates and parody famous personalities. When he was 10 years old, he wrote a letter to the popular comedy show The Carroll Burnett Show saying he was “a master of parody” and should be given a role on the show. The brisk boy got a standard response, but he was still happy.

Standup and first roles

Father fully supported Jim in his desire to become a professional artist. Unable to financially help him, he brought 15-year-old Jim to the Yak-Yak comedy club in Toronto and even helped him write the lyrics. The first performance of the young man failed miserably, but in 1979 he ascended the same stage again, and this time he managed to win over the audience.

Standup by Jim Carrey (Russian translation)

By 1981, Jim had gone from amateur open mic performances to regular pay-per-view performances, becoming the star of several clubs at once. Having conquered Toronto, the young artist moved to Los Angeles, where he was just as readily accepted on local stages. Here he was once noticed by the popular comedian Rodney Dangerfield and invited to open his performances during the tour. But at the end of the tour, Dangerfield settled in Las Vegas, and Jim Carrey decided to move to Hollywood.

In 1981, the comedian was quite famous in his native Canada

In Hollywood, Jim got a job at The Comedy Store. In 1982, he made his first television appearance in the stand-up show Improv Evening, and in 1983 he starred in the variety show Tonight. The young artist was unsatisfied with his career as a stand-up comedian and dreamed of appearing regularly on television and acting in films.

He made his film debut in 1983 in Rubberface, and in the same year he starred in All in Good Taste and Kupper’s Mountain. At 19In 84, he was invited to play the lead role in the children’s series The Duck Factory, and then he starred in the films Once Bitten (1985), Peggy Sue Gets Married (1986, directed by Francis Coppola), Earth Girls Are Easy ( 1988), Death List (1988), Pink Cadillac (1989), Nerves on the Line (1991), Life on Maple Drive (1992).

Jim Carrey and Lauren Hutton (“Once Bitten”)

From 1990 to 1994 he had a role in the comedy television series In Living Color on Fox, and in addition to 19In 1991, his own show, The Unnatural Act of Jim Carrey, came out – he dedicated it to his mother, who had died shortly before.

Acting career

In 1994, a fantastic breakthrough took place in Jim Carrey’s career: three extraordinarily successful films with his participation appeared on the screens at once: Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (collected $ 107 million at the box office), The Mask (351 million, the film launched career of Cameron Diaz) and “Dumb and Dumber” (247 million).

Eccentric detective Ace Ventura – Jim Carrey’s breakthrough role

As a result, the actor was nominated for the Golden Globe and received the MTV Movie Award as the best comedian, but at the same time, not all critics liked his peculiar style with eccentric facial expressions, and a nomination for the Golden Raspberry anti-award immediately followed. in the “worst new star” category.

Ace Ventura. best moments

Jim gained particular popularity among young people, and the audience reviews for all three comedies expressed stormy delight: “We seemed to be back in the days when films were allowed to cause laughter”, “This is one of the funniest films in modern comedy”, “Fun every second! ”, “I would like to go back to the time when I watched it for the first time and laughed until the pain! Brilliant movie.

Jim Carrey has two older sisters and an older brother

The following year, the actor was invited to play the role of the Riddler in the superhero action movie Batman Forever (1995), where Val Kilmer, Tommy Lee Jones, Nicole Kidman and Drew Barrymore became his co-stars. And although this film received mixed reviews from critics as a “vulgarly commercial movie”, it grossed over $336 million at the box office and demonstrated Jim Carrey’s ability not only to lead on the screen, but also to join a diverse ensemble cast. For this work, he was nominated for an MTV Movie Award in the Best Screen Villain category.

Batman Forever: Jim Carrey as the Riddler

The series of victories was continued by the sequel “Ace Ventura 2: When Nature Calls”, the rental fees of which were twice the fees of the first part. Not without awards: the actor received the Kid’s Choice Awards for Favorite Actor, two MTV Movie Awards in the categories of Best Actor and Best Comedy Role, and an MTV Movie Award nomination for Best Actor. screen kiss (with Sophie Okonedo).

After that, Jim Carrey starred in Ben Stiller’s black comedy The Cable Guy (1996), and his fee for this work amounted to a fabulous 20 million dollars. Prizes followed again: Kid’s Choice Awards for Favorite Actor, MTV Movie Award for Best Actor and Best On-Screen Villain, and an MTV Movie Award nomination for Best Fight (with Matthew Broderick) .

Still from The Cable Guy

But Jim’s incredible rise in popularity did not end there either: in 1997, one of the cult comedies with his participation, Liar, Liar, was released – a story about a successful lawyer who mysteriously lost the ability to tell a lie, which almost destroyed his career, but but it helped to build relationships with the family.

“Liar, liar”: bad takes

This time, the audience was also pleased, thanks to which the film grossed $ 302 million, and even the critics, who reacted to Jim much warmer than usual:

Despite its simple plot, “Liar Liar” benefits enormously from Jim Carrey’s trademark, seething humor. An explosion of laughter – and you willy-nilly begin to adore him.

And even Robert Ebert – an authoritative film critic who gave negative reviews to all the actor’s previous films – after the release of this film wrote: “I gradually begin to grow suspicion – or rather, I will call it fear – that Jim Carrey is sprouting through me.” An additional award to the actor was the nomination for the Golden Globe.

Despite outstanding success, in 1998 he decided to take a break from his frivolous role and starred in a more serious role in the fantastic tragicomedy The Truman Show. This is the story of a man whose whole life suddenly turns out to be a cunningly and cruelly planned reality show. The picture received the highest praise from critics as “a funny and touching film that surprisingly accurately shows a nation sick with an unquenchable thirst for spying on the personal lives of celebrities and ordinary people.” Among the huge number of prestigious awards received by this film is the “Golden Globe” Jim Carrey for Best Dramatic Actor.

The Truman Show was a huge hit with viewers

Another unusual role for him, played in 1999, is the role of the famous comedian Andy Kaufman in Milos Forman’s biographical drama Man in the Moon. Famous actors such as Courtney Love, Danny DeVito and Christopher Lloyd also took part in this film. And, despite the fact that this picture did not pay off at the box office, Jim Carrey received another Golden Globe for it and several nominations for other film awards.

The real Andy Kaufman and Jim Carrey as him

In 2000, the actor returned to his favorite genre of comedy and starred in the films “Me, Me Again and Irene” (paired with Renee Zellweger) and “The Grinch Stole Christmas” (with Anthony Hopkins). Both films were successful, with The Grinch earning Jim Carrey a new MTV Movie Award and a Golden Globe nomination.

For the filming of The Grinch, Jim Carrey had to make up 3.5 hours every day

Another unforgettable work of the actor was the main role in the famous comedy Bruce Almighty (2003), played in partnership with Jennifer Aniston and Morgan Freeman. The film grossed a whopping $484 million despite being banned in some Muslim countries because it depicts a god in the form of an ordinary person.

“Bruce Almighty” – trailer

Standing out among these works is the romantic fantasy drama Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2003), in which Jim Carrey starred in a brilliant ensemble cast with Kate Winslet, Kirsten Dunst, Mark Ruffalo and Elijah Wood. It is a film about “the bewildered beauty and existential horror of a mind trapped in a bewildered mind and the self-imposed amnesia of a broken but hopeful heart.” The film received a number of prestigious awards, including the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, and Jim Carey was nominated for BAFTA and Saturn awards. His performance in this film was called “the best, most mature and clearly focused of his entire career.”

Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Another interesting work was the role of the main villain Count Olaf in the family fantasy adventure Lemony Snicket: 33 Misfortunes (2004), where Meryl Streep also starred along with young actors. The film grossed a $209 million box office for a children’s film, and critics called Jim Carrey’s anti-hero “hilariously manic.” The Paramount Pictures film studio planned to shoot a sequel to this story, and possibly more than one, but after a while it became obvious that these plans were not destined to come true: the actors who played the roles of the children of the Baudelaire family had matured too noticeably.

The actor is very organic in “villainous” images

In 2007, the actor starred in the psychological thriller The Fatal Number 23, and this role was another major departure from his trademark comic role. Unfortunately, critics smashed this work to smithereens, calling it “clumsy and uninteresting”, and Jim Carrey was nominated for the Golden Raspberry anti-award.

With Stephen Hawking

After this failure, the success of the comedy Always Say Yes (2008), in which he starred with Zooey Deschanel and Bradley Cooper, turned out to be even more valuable for him. The award was another MTV Movie Award and several nominations at the Teen Choice Awards and Kid’s Choice Awards. Critics wrote: “Always Say Yes is good as a comedy with Jim Carrey, but it’s even more interesting to watch it as a love movie that makes you laugh every now and then.”

Jim Carrey’s horse – his amazing facial expressions

However, the actor’s interest in more serious cinema was not at all exhausted, and in 2009 he played one of the main roles in the romantic tragicomedy I Love You Phillip Morris in partnership with Ewan McGregor. The film was screened at the Sundance Non-Commercial Film Festival and later at the Cannes Film Festival prior to its worldwide release.

Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor played a couple in love

Due to the abundance of homosexual erotic scenes, the picture did not find an outlet for a wide audience for several months, and the authors had to cut out some fragments. And although the box office was quite modest by Hollywood standards, connoisseurs of auteur cinema enthusiastically approved this film: “This romantic comedy based on real events has its flaws, but they are completely unimportant against the backdrop of its sweet and funny tone and the best acting of Jim Carrey throughout his career.

Still from the film “I love you Philip Morris”

In the same 2009, he played in the film A Christmas Carol, a 3D adaptation of Charles Dickens’ story. Together with him, Colin Firth, Gary Oldman, Robin Wright Penn and other famous actors participated in this project. The film became a real blockbuster, collecting 325 million dollars. Then there were works in the successful comedies “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” (2011), “Dumb and Dumber 2” (2014) and several more films. In recent years, Jim Carrey has been actively involved in producing, and in this new capacity he participated in the documentary “Rubble Kings” (“Kings of Paving Stones”, 2015), the television series “I’m Dying with Laughter” (2017) and several other projects.

In 2018, Jim Carrey starred in the comedy-drama series Kidding as a lead actor and producer. In this project, Kerry plays the host of a children’s TV show who is facing problems in his personal life. The series received fairly high marks from critics.

Jim Carrey in his youth and now

In recent years, he has practically moved away from big cinema and devoted himself to his old hobby – painting. Now among his works the genre of political caricature prevails. For political reasons, he also deleted his Facebook account and sold his shares in the company.

However, in 2020, viewers saw Kerry in the villainous role of Dr. Robotnik in the feature film about Sonic the Hedgehog. The actor, although not too similar to the original source from a computer game, perfectly got used to the role.

Jim Carrey in Sonic

In 2021, Kerry is scheduled to premiere the animated film Space Jam 2. In it, the actor played the role of the Mask. Filming of Jim’s author’s work – the series “Just Kidding” also continues. It has been renewed for several seasons.

Personal life of Jim Carrey

Jim Carrey was officially married twice in his life, and also had several love affairs. His motto in his personal life can be considered the statement:

I don’t believe in fairy tales about eternal love. Ten years with the same person is more than enough.

He first married on March 8, 1987 – his chosen one was actress Melissa Womer, then a waitress from The Comedy Store club, and later an actress and producer. 9September of the same year, their daughter Jane Erin Kerry was born.

Soon tragic events took place in the actor’s life: in 1991, after a serious illness, his mother died, and in 1994, his father, to whom Jim was very attached, passed away. The depressed state due to the loss of his parents led the actor to depression, and Melissa was unable to help him. The actor seemed to be fighting two opposite principles: he could be an exemplary family man, but periodically desperately needed solitude.

In 1995, Jim began an affair with his Dumb and Dumber co-star Lauren Holly, and after a series of serious scandals, Melissa decided to divorce him. On September 23, 1996, Jim married Lauren, but this marriage lasted only 8 months.

Jim Carrey was married to Lauren Holly for less than a year

After that, he was engaged to Renee Zellweger for a year and a half, a relationship with which began on the set of the comedy Me, Myself and Irene, and then briefly met with his doctor Tiffany Silver and fashion model Anine Bing.

With René Zellweger

In 2005, he met model and actress Jenny McCarthy, and their relationship lasted until April 2010. Despite all the attempts of journalists to find out the reasons for the breakup of this beautiful couple, there were no comments from the former lovers, with the exception of the words of Jenny: “Jim and I still remain good friends.”

The actor still has a warm relationship with Jenny McCarthy

In 2012, 53-year-old Jim Carrey met with Russian student Anastasia Vitkina, and after breaking up with her, began a relationship with 28-year-old Irish Catriona White. Soon this couple also broke up, and in 2013 the girl married another man. However, from May to September 2015, a love affair flared up again between Jim and Catriona, and after parting, the young woman committed suicide by taking a lethal dose of pills. According to her mother, “she felt that she had no reason to live after the loss of the man she loved madly.”

Jim Carrey’s ex-girlfriend, Catriona White, committed suicide

He paid for Catriona’s funeral in full, carried the coffin and looked very depressed. Soon, the official husband of Catriona White filed a lawsuit against Jim Carrey, accusing him of “using his enormous wealth and star status to illegally acquire pills,” which poisoned his wife, but the actor defended his innocence in court.

After that, he almost disappeared from the radar and appeared in public only in September 2017 at … Fashion Week in New York. He shaved off his thick beard and looked emaciated, although he still joked and charmed those around him. He told a journalist who decided to interview him: “This is not our world. All this is not real. We don’t make any sense.”

Jim Carrey made his first public appearance since the death of his ex-girlfriend

Now Jim Carrey is dating actress Ginger Gonzaga, an American with Filipino roots. They met on the set of the series “Just Kidding”. It seems that for the first time in a long time, the actor is truly happy in his personal life. By the way, it was with her that he starred in the first erotic scene in his film career.

Jim Carrey’s daughter Jane performs in her own rock band, the Jane Carrey Band, and in 2009In the year she married the musician of the same group, Alex Santana. On February 26, 2010, their son Jason Riley Santana was born, and Jim loves his grandson. Unfortunately, in December 2010, Jane and Alex divorced.

Jim Carrey is a Canadian citizen and, since 2004, also a US citizen. He is a vegetarian and an opponent of the current practice of vaccination, because he believes that some types of vaccines are toxic and cause autism.

On March 30, 2022, the second part of Sonic was released, in which Kerry returned to the role of Robotnik. In connection with the premiere, Access Hollywood interviewed the actor, during which he announced his retirement:

I could continue like this, but I’m taking a break. I really like my quiet life. I’ve done enough

What the TV series is about

There are Seven Kingdoms on the island of Westeros, where dragons and wizards live, but they are very rare. The fictional island of Westeros is more reminiscent of Europe in the Middle Ages, where feudal lords rule. People are engaged in agriculture, and enemies are beaten off with swords. Winter comes to the island extremely rarely, but if it comes, then for decades. Series about the eternal struggle. While the Seven Kingdoms are reclaiming one part of their borders, the snow dead are approaching others. They are endowed with a special boundless power, which brings with it severe cold and the complete destruction of the island.

New House of the Dragon series: what intrigues await viewers

Fantasy series House of the Dragon begins its narrative of the Targaryen civil war for the right of a child to be the first ruler in the family, regardless of whether he has the prerequisites for this or not. The events took place during the reign of King Jaehaerys I. After the death of Prince Aemon, the king, instead of traditionally handing over the rule to his granddaughter Rhaenys, chose his eldest son Balon as the ruler. This act was condemned even by the wife of the king. The death of the king’s family completely devastated him and he had no choice but to gather an urgent council, at which the son of Balon, Viserys, was chosen as the ruler of the throne. He bequeathed the throne by right to Rhaenys, but after his death, his eldest son, Aegon, seized the reign, which finally broke the kingdom. The new season will tell viewers about the battles between brothers and sisters, spouses for the right to rule the throne, passing from generation to generation.

Cary Grant – biography, personal life, photos, movies

Biography

Cary Grant is one of the representatives of the “old” Hollywood. Together with Alain Delon, Marlon Brando and Clark Gable, the actor made women all over the world lose their heads in love. They say that even the Princess of Monaco Grace Kelly could not resist his charm, and along with her – Audrey Hepburn, Sophia Loren and Ingrid Bergman.

Childhood and youth

Archibald Alec Leach (real name Cary Grant) was born on January 18, 1904 in Bristol. He became the second child in the family of the English Elias James and Elsie Maria (née Kingdon). His older brother John William Elias died of tuberculous meningitis in 1900 before his first birthday.

Actor Cary Grant

Life in the Leach family could not be called prosperous: his father was constantly drinking, and his mother suffered from clinical depression. Archibald became Elsie’s cure. From the age of 4 she taught her son to dance, sing and play the piano, took him to the movies. Having become a famous actor, Cary Grant admitted that his mother was too annoying: she took away pocket money for the slightest misconduct, she was annoyed if her father smoked and drank in his presence. Elsie was caring, afraid of losing another son.

When Archibald was 9 years old, Elias placed his wife in a psychiatric clinic, telling the boy that she had died. The father confessed to lying just before his death, when the actor was 31 years old. Grant ordered his mother released from the hospital in June 1935. For the first time after a long separation, mother and son saw each other in 1938.

Cary Grant as a child

Without waiting even a year, in 1913, the father created a new family in which there was no place for his son. Archibald’s upbringing was left to his grandmother, Elsie’s mother.

Bad relationship with his parents made the boy withdrawn, but he had friends – acrobatic dancers from the Bob Pender Stage Troupe. They taught Archibald how to do tricks on stilts and took him on tour. In 1914, during a tour of Berlin, the aspiring acrobat was noticed by Jesse Lasky, at that time a Broadway producer, later one of the founders of Paramount Pictures.

Cary Grant as a young man

In 1915, Archibald received a scholarship to study at the Fairfield Grammar School in Bristol. Good looks and acting talent made the boy popular among his peers. He excelled in all subjects, was interested in sports, but was remembered by teachers as “a naughty boy who always made noise in the last desks and did not do his homework.”

Archibald spent his free time behind the scenes of theaters. In 1917, when the famous illusionist David Devant performed at the Bristol Empire, a 13-year-old boy was entrusted with lighting the stage. And working as a messenger on the docks of Southampton awakened in Archibald a desire to travel. Once he was almost taken on a ship as a waiter, but was refused because of his young age.

Cary Grant

In 1918, Leach Jr. was expelled from school: several times he ended up in the ladies’ room and helped his classmates rob a store. Geoffrey Wansell, Cary Grant’s biographer, wrote that he intended to do these things in order to return to a career as a traveling entertainer.

And indeed – after 3 days he was touring again, and on legal grounds: Elias decided to legalize his son’s hobby. The contract signed between Archibald and the troupe was designed for 3 years, provided for weekly payments (£0.5 each), the provision of housing, payment for dance lessons and other professional activities until the age of 18.

Movies

In his youth, the guy often moved from place to place and finally settled in the USA, founding his own acrobatic troupe “The Walking Stanleyys”.

Cary Grant in his youth

In his free time from the circus, Archibald played on the Broadway stage. For the first job, the young man received $ 75 a week, then his fee increased to $ 350. Gradually, a theatrical career supplanted street performances, and in 1930 he went on tour as part of the troupe of the musical The Street Singer.

The role of a soldier of post-war France in the musical “Nikki” by William Friedlander was praised by critics of The New York Daily News – Ed Sullivan noted that “the young guy from England has a great future in cinema.” The article turned out to be prophetic.

Actor Cary Grant

On December 7, 1931, Paramount Pictures signed the young actor to a 5-year contract with a starting salary of $450 a week. At the same time, the agents advised changing the name to “something more like an American one, like Gary Cooper’s.” So Archibald Leach became Cary Grant.

The role of the Olympic javelin thrower in his debut film This Night in 1932 disappointed Grant, and he wanted to terminate his newly signed contract. But, to his surprise, critics from Variety published positive reviews. In the same year, the actor appeared in the film “Blond Venus” with Marlene Dietrich.

Cary Grant and Marlene Dietrich in the film “Blond Venus”

Pictures of 1932 – “The Devil and the Deep”, “Madama Butterfly”, “Hot Saturday” – did not make Cary Grant a movie star, but created the image of “an ideal man, in whom there is no falling in love is scary.”

Released in 1933, She Treated Him Unfairly earned more than $2 million at the American box office, making Grant famous. His earnings rose to $750 a week. And the film “I’m not an angel” saved Paramount Pictures from bankruptcy.

Cary Grant and Mae West in “She Treated Him Foul”

After a resounding rise in Grant’s creative biography, failure followed: “Born to be bad”, “Kiss and make up lips”, “Wings in the dark” did not gather full auditoriums, therefore, the actor was dubbed “unprofitable” and planned to be fired. The shooting of the film “The Wedding Gift” in 1936 ended the collaboration with Paramount Pictures.

Grant signed with RKO and Columbia Pictures for 2 years. During this time, four films were to be shot. The first picture was “When you are in love” 1937, where the actor played a wealthy American artist who is trying to win over a famous opera singer.

Irene Dunn and Cary Grant in “Penny Serenade”

Cary Grant thought that “Philadelphia Story” in 1940 should have earned him an Oscar nomination, but the Academy noticed him a year later in “Penny Serenade”, and then in 1944 for his role in the film Only a Lonely Heart. He never received the award.

Alfred Hitchcock, a director famous for chilling thrillers, considered a star in Cary Grant and invited him to the film “Insight”. The project turned out to be unsuccessful: because of the “train” of the ideal man, Hitchcock was unable to complete the story of Grant’s character with suicide, as previously planned, but put him in jail.

“If you don’t have a cynical ending, it makes the story too simple,” said the director.

In the early 1950s, a decline in Grant’s career followed – after 20 years of filming, acrobat Archibald Leach got tired of the romantic image. Having starred in 1953 with Deborah Kerr in The Ideal Wife, the actor decided to take a break from his career, which, however, did not last long.

Cary Grant and Grace Kelly in To Catch a Thief

Alfred Hitchcock’s To Catch a Thief was released in 1955, starring Cary Grant and Grace Kelly. Later, the actor said that the future Princess of Monaco

“probably the best actress I’ve ever worked with.

And he had something to compare – Grant met Deborah Kerr again in “An Unforgettable Romance”, co-starred with Sophia Loren in “Pride and Passion”.

Sophia Loren and Cary Grant in the film “Pride and Passion”

The actor experienced tender feelings for the latter, offered to marry, but the affair was not successful. In “The Houseboat” they starred, barely carrying each other.

Cary Grant’s last filmography was Walk, Don’t Run at 1966, and after that, the 62-year-old actor announced his retirement.

Personal life

A difficult relationship with his mother in childhood left an imprint on Cary Grant’s relationship with women: he looked for support in them, was nervous if they began to control him. However, the actor’s personal life is rich – Grant has been married five times.

Virginia Cherrill and Cary Grant

February 9, 1934 married Virginia Cherrill. The marriage lasted a little over a year, and on March 26, 1935, the couple divorced, because Grant allegedly beat his wife.

In 1942, the actor married Barbara Hutton, one of the richest women in the world – she inherited $ 50 million from her grandfather, the creator of the Woolworth chain. The lovers divorced after 3 years, remaining “the most faithful loving friends.”

Cary Grant and Barbara Hutton

In 1949, Grant’s wife was fellow cinematographer Betsy Drake. This marriage became the longest and lasted until 1962.

Children appeared in another union. In 1965, the actor married Dian Cannon, and on February 26, 19On the 66th, daughter Jennifer was born, whom Cary Grant called “the best production.” After 2 years, the couple divorced.

Cary Grant and his wife Barbara Harris

On April 11, 1981, the actor married Barbara Harris. The girl was 47 years younger than her husband. Relatives said that Barbara was a positive influence on Grant and that

“he was never happier than in his last years with her.”

In the 2016 documentary Becoming Cary Grant, allegations were made that the actor and close friend Randolph Scott had a homosexual relationship. As evidence, photos of an intimate nature were cited, the fact that men of 12 years old shared a roof over their heads. Grant’s daughter Jennifer commented:

“Father liked the rumors about his homosexuality, he said that they only kindle women’s interest in him.”

Death

At the turn of the 1970s and 1980s, many of Cary Grant’s close friends died: Howard Hughes (1976), Howard Hawks (1977), Barbara Hutton (1979), Alfred Hitchcock (1980), Grace Kelly and Ingrid Bergman (1982). An endless string of sad events caused the actor’s health to fail: he was tormented by jumping pressure and arrhythmia.

Statue of Cary Grant

On November 29, 1986, a doctor was called to the room of Cary Grant and his wife. The actor was diagnosed with a massive stroke, but the man refused hospitalization. He was taken to the hospital only when he fell into a coma. 45 minutes fought for the life of the “King of Hollywood”, and Cary Grant died half an hour before midnight.

John Irving

John Irving (John Winslow Irving / John Winslow Irving) – American writer, screenwriter, actor was born in Exter, New Hampshire during World War II (March 2, 1942). At this time, his father served in the army and was in the Pacific Ocean. When John was only two years old, his parents divorced, and in 1948 his mother remarried, taking the surname Irving, which John received, who turned from John Wallace Blunt Jr. into John Winslow Irving. The writer grew up like this never even having met his biological father.

Irving grew up as a reserved child, but he himself considers his innate love for loneliness to be an important character trait that made him a writer. As a child, John suffered from dyslexia, and even simple reading was given to him with great difficulty. Despite this, he became a drunken reader and entered the Faculty of Literary Studies. As a student of Philips Exeter Academy, where his adoptive father taught Russian history, Irving became interested in wrestling. He is sure that it was thanks to this sport that he learned discipline and perseverance.

After one year of study, Irving left the University of Pittsburgh and moved to Vienna, the capital of Austria. He studied at the University of Vienna and traveled all over Europe on a motorcycle. The impressions received were later reflected in his works. After returning to the United States, Irving enrolled at the University of New Hampshire, graduating in 1965. He married when he was still a student, and became a father at 23. Having finally established his decision to become a writer, Irving received a grant to study writing courses at the University of Iowa, where Kurt Vonnegut was among his teachers.

Irving received his Ph.D. in 1967. In the same year he returned to New England with his grown family and received a position as an assistant in the English department at Windham College in Vermont. His first book, Free the Bears (another translation, Unleash the Bears), was published when he was only 26 years old. Inspired by the real events of the last days of the Second World War, in his novel he told the tragicomic story of two students trying to free animals from the Vienna Zoo. Already in the first work, you can find several intertwined storylines that give special drama to the misfortunes that fall on the heads of the heroes of his books. Subsequently, this technique will become Irving’s hallmark. Despite the warm reviews of critics and even the favorable opinion of Kurt Vonnegut, the book did not gain much popularity among readers. However, along with director Irving Keshner, Irving attempted to write a script for a film adaptation of this novel. Although the attempt was frankly unsuccessful, it was not the author’s last experience with Hollywood. At the same time, Irving received an academic grant from the Rockefeller Foundation.

In his second book, The Man of Water (1972), the author sneered at the mores of the US academic community and once again returned to Vienna. That same year, Irving became a writer-in-residence at the University of Iowa. His next book, Family Life at 158 Pounds, was published two years later and focused on the difficult intimate life of two married couples on a US university campus. It is no coincidence that its title refers to the slang of wrestlers; the writer, even in his mature years, remains faithful to this sport. At 19In 1975, Irving became an assistant in the English department at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts. That same year, Irving received a grant from the Guggenheim Foundation.

Frustrated by the way Random House promoted his work, Irving gave his fourth novel, The World Through Garp’s Eyes (1978), to Dutton, whose management promised the writer full support for his new book. The protagonist of the book, the protagonist of the author, a writer who tells stories about his life, which involve bright, eccentric characters. Immediately after its release, the novel received rave reviews and became an international bestseller. At 1979 The World Through Garp’s Eyes was shortlisted for the American Book Award and the following year won the National Book Foundation’s award, which at the same time began to be given separately for paperback and hardcover books. . Later, the work was filmed by director George Roy Hill, and Robin Williams starred in the title role. The film was nominated for several Academy Awards. There was a place in the film adaptation for the author himself, who starred as a manager in one of Garp’s wrestling matches.

“The World According to Garp” made a well-known academic writer a super-popular author, and all subsequent books by Irving became bestsellers. The first in this series was the novel Hotel New Hampshire (1981), which sold well despite mixed reviews from critics. The book was quickly filmed, directed by Tony Richardson and starring Judy Foster, Rob Lowe and Beau Bridges. However, the film adaptation can hardly be called successful: the novel was too heavy to transfer it to the screen without losing many storylines and semantic layers.

In 1985, Irving published The Cider House Rules. The epic story revolves around an orphanage run by a drug-addicted obstetrician. Many people note a large number of parallels between this book and Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist. The central theme of the novel was the problem of abortion. Thanks to this book, Irving was in the midst of a debate raging in the United States between supporters and opponents of abortion. The position of the author himself, who is a supporter of the legalization of abortion, was influenced by the experience of his adoptive grandfather, who was an obstetrician-gynecologist.

After the publication of The World Through Garp’s Eyes, Irving was able to devote all his energies to writing, only occasionally getting a job as a teacher at various US universities (including once the author worked at his alma mater). Also, Irving serves as an assistant coach in the wrestling team of the university where his son is studying.

Irving’s next novel, A Prayer for Owen Meaney, is also a family epic set in New England. The central theme of the work is faith and religiosity (and the difference between the first and the second). The protagonist of the novel – a touching and tragic boy with small stature and a rough voice – turns out to be a man who knows in advance about his destiny, and his whole life, in fact, is a preparation for the main thing that awaits him at the end. In this book, there are fewer tragicomic situations than usual, in some ways, perhaps, it resembles the best novels of Irving’s friend and countryman Stephen King. As is often the case with King, in the life of the protagonist of “A Prayer for Owen Meaney” mystical, inexplicable cases happen every now and then, and he himself – as the reader understands at the end – may be another incarnation of Christ. In any case, no rational explanations can “justify” what happens in the novel.

The book was influenced by The Tin Drum by Günther Grass, The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Dickens. In A Prayer for Owen Meany, Irving for the first time in his work touched on the subject of the Vietnam War and its consequences for American society – especially the mandatory draft, which the author himself avoided as a married father of a child and a school teacher. Now “A Prayer for Owen Meaney” is often included in the lists of books recommended for school reading in the UK.

With his next book, Son of the Circus (1995), Irving returned to Random House. This is probably his darkest, most complex and difficult book, and one that lays aloof from the main themes of his previous novels. In the center of the plot are the memories of an Indian doctor living in Canada: about his childhood spent in a circus wandering around rural India, about the magical world of mysterious eccentrics and magicians. This work of the author is most often compared with the books of Charles Dickens. Despite mixed reviews from critics, “Son of the Circus” became a national bestseller, perhaps due to the fact that the author had by that time a reputation as a fashionable writer. Irving’s next book had to wait 3 years, at 1998, The Men Not in Her Life (also known as Widow for a Year) is published, which the New York Times called a “notable” book. Shortly after its release, the novel was filmed by director Tod Williams.

In 1999, after many years of intensive work, a film based on the novel The Cider House Rules was released. Directed by Lasse Hallström and starring Tobey Maguire, Charlize Theron, Delroy Lindo, Michael Caine. The film again found a place for the author’s cameo. The path of this book to the movie screen was very thorny. Then Irving will recall with irony that the work on the film cost “ two producers, four directors, thirteen years and countless rewrites of ‘s script.” The efforts paid off. The Winemaker’s Rules brought the author an Oscar for best screenplay and was also nominated for an award for best film.

Soon after, Irving published the book My Movie Business, in which he talked about his impressions of working on the film adaptation of The Winemakers’ Rules. To ensure the best sales for his new work, Irving took part in the CBC Television Hot Type television show. During the program, he allowed himself a few caustic remarks about another American writer, Tom Wolfe. A year later, Wolfe returned the favor on the same show, naming Irving, Updike, and Mailer as the three dolls scared of his new novel, The Full Body Man.

The next novel, The Fourth Hand (2001), partly takes place again in India. The protagonist, a photojournalist, loses his arm in an accident and after a transplant becomes the first person to receive a transplanted limb. Difficulties are being read because of the widow of the donor, who insists on meeting with the hand of her deceased husband. Like Irving’s previous books, The Fourth Hand has traditionally become a bestseller.

In 2004, a separate edition with illustrations by Tatiana Hauptmann released a children’s book, A Sound Like Someone Trying Not to Make a Sound, which was originally published as part of the novel Men Not in Her Life.

And the following year, Irving’s new novel, Until I Find You (2005), was released. It has more autobiographical moments than other books. The plot revolves around a successful actor, Jack Burns, who grew up without a father and dreams of finding him. While working on this book, the writer began to communicate with his half-brother and finally learned a little about the life and character of his real father. The New York Times reported that this novel reflected a real-life sexual assault experienced by the author at the age of 11.

In addition to the novels, the author wrote the collection Trying to Save Piggy Sneed, which includes previously unpublished short stories and a “miniature autobiography”, as well as a short nonfiction book, The Imaginary Girlfriend, dedicated to Irving’s views on writing and struggle.

In his writings, Irving expressed his deep affection for humanity in all its amazing diversity, as well as genuine admiration for the courage and sense of humor of men, women and children who struggle with life’s catastrophes.

The writer’s first marriage ended in 1981 and after that in 1987 he married a second time – to his literary agent Janet Turnbull. In honor of this event, to make a gift to his wife, Irving got a maple leaf tattoo on her left shoulder (his wife is Canadian). But the first tattoo on the arm is the starting round of the competition, because. John was wrestling. Irving has three children: sons Brendan and Colin from his first marriage and Everett from his second.

Today John Irving and his family live in Vermont and Toronto. He continues to write novels and adapt his previous works for film adaptations. And readers all over the world are looking forward to new books by this recognized master of ironic stories.

« If my ideas were important to me, I wouldn’t write novels. I am not an intellectual; I am a carpenter, I am a builder of stories .”

John Irving is not a science fiction writer, but the mystical element in the novels “A Prayer for Owen Meaney” and “The Fourth Hand” has a plot-forming character.

Washington Irving – a classic of American literature, a master of short romantic stories and historical research, the first professional writer in the United States, widely known in Europe. Essayist and poet, great lover of legends and mysticism, traveler and biographer, he also wrote under the pseudonyms Jonathan Oldstyle, Diedrich Knickerbocker, Geoffrey Cryan and Lancelot Langstaff. Realism and mysticism, fairy tales and fantasy are intertwined in his works.

Washington, the youngest of 11 Irving children, three of whom died in infancy, was born April 3, 1783 in New York. His father William, a Scot by birth, served as a junior naval officer near New York during the war with the French, where he met the beautiful Sarah Sanders, the granddaughter of an English vicar. They married in 1761 and moved to New York two years later. William Irving leaves the sea to engage in trade, but what business if British ships are firing on the city – the times of the American revolutionary war for independence have come. Washington, who was born in a house on William Street (near Wall Street), received his name in honor of one of the founders of the United States – George Washington. When the first president arrived in New York, the Irving maid caught him in the store and introduced him to the guy. “Please, Your Honor,” said Lizzie, “here’s a baby named after you!” Washington put his hand on the boy’s head and gave him his blessing. The father of the nation, perhaps, had no idea that he was blessing the father of American literature and his meticulous biographer!

Half-burnt during the struggle for independence, New York at the time of Irving’s birth was a town with a population of about twenty-three thousand inhabitants (immigrants from England and Holland), although a newspaper was published in it from 1732, and a theater existed from 1750.

From an early age, the boy was distinguished by daydreaming, impressionability, impracticality and extreme indifference to his father’s commercial activities. His best friends were always books: at school he read Cicero and Titus Livius in Latin and adored the poetry of Oliver Godsmith. Washington’s father was a God-fearing man who did not entertain children with entertainment. Serious discipline at home would have been unbearable were it not for the impulsive nature of the mother, who dearly loved her children. Washington was inflamed with love for music, literature, theater, largely thanks to James K. Paulding, whose sister was the wife of William, brother of W. Irving. Having completed his education by the age of 16, the dreamy Washington found food for thought in English literature. After reading “Robinson Crusoe”, “Gulliver” and “Sinbad”, he literally devours travel books, he travels around the district with his friend Paulding (later he will also become a writer).

After leaving school (1802), Irving was assigned to the Hoffmann law office. But Washington has not acquired a taste for jurisprudence. Irving travels along the Hudson (where you can meet the Flying Dutchman!), meets with the Indians, gets to Montreal. Washington discovered his literary inclinations as a child, writing humorous poems at the age of 10, and a play and an essay at 13. Washington’s first literary publications are the Letters of Jonathan Oldstyle, which appeared in 1802 in the Morning Chronicle, a newspaper founded by his brother Peter. It was a bold satire that ridiculed the theater and actors.

Irving’s fragile health forced his brothers to send Washington to Europe in 1804. On May 19th, he boarded a ship whose captain told himself that there was a guy on board who had a chance to go overboard before the voyage was over. But Irving made it safely to France, then moved to Italy. His health has been restored and he is surrounded by friends. Irving gets to London, he is accepted by the best society, the world is fascinated by his manners. Irving meets with a lot of people, visits the theater, opera, gets accustomed to the manners of people, their habits, customs.

Returning to New York in 1806, he continued his legal education without much interest and even received the title of barrister, but citing poor health, he left law and began to pursue what he had always wanted – literature. Irving, in collaboration with Paulding and brother William, produces the popular humorous almanac Salmagundi, a series of ironic sketches about the life and life of New York. Soon a tragic event occurs that influenced the writer’s entire later life – his beloved, the daughter of Judge Hoffman, the very one who taught him jurisprudence, dies. To forget, Irving plunges into work and in 1809New York History is published, a novel written by him alone (the brothers abandoned writing – one of them became a doctor, and the other inherited his father’s hardware and grocery trade). In this hoax chronicle, which parodied the life of Americans in the past and in the present, the author’s interest in history and historical flavor is already evident. Irving continued to write and publish poetry, theater criticism, and humoresques in Brother Peter’s newspaper.

During the war with England in 1812-1814, with the rank of colonel, Irving was aide-de-camp to the governor of New York, General Tompkins. He writes biographies of naval commanders, but this does not please the romantic writer. His mother dies, his father’s business suffers a financial collapse, and in 1815 Irving leaves for England with the last money, hoping for help from his brother Peter, who lived in London, and his married sister in Birmingham. It turned out that the author of the “Knickerbocker” was known in England, but he was looked upon as a curiosity in a civilized society. Forced to write for a living, Washington Irving immediately decided on the main theme of his work, he had his own character and his own style, which were born from humorous essays published in Salmagundi. Irving published a collection of travel notes, A Book of Sketches (1815), made by him during a trip to England under the influence of German folk tales. In 1819When reprinted, this book was published under the pseudonym “Jeffrey Cryan, Gentleman” and included two additional stories, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and “Rip Van Winkle” (included in the “Anthology” of the American Fiction Short Story), which are now considered the best works of the author, part of the golden fund of American literature. Bracebridge Hall (1822) and A Traveler’s Tales (1824) brought him a substantial income. In 1822-23. Irving lived in Dresden, in 1824 in London, where he even had a romantic relationship with Mary Shelley, and in 1825 in Paris. Many of Irving’s short stories are nothing more than science fiction, although sometimes the writer’s only plot is to a large extent mystical and mysterious. In such stories as, for example, “The Ghost Bridegroom” or “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”, the reader remains convinced of the extraordinary nature of what is happening until the last lines. And only the last lines of the work put everything in its place, and the revealed realism of the situation seems to be the only reasonable explanation.

“Although Irving has repeatedly admitted that he is concerned about everything mystical and supernatural, in his short stories he consistently, in the American spirit, destroyed the atmosphere of the mysterious. Being the heir of enlightenment ideas and admirer of Reason and not believing in otherworldly and “terrible”, the writer nevertheless felt attracted to the wonderful world of fiction. .. levels. It has its roots in a legend, which, by definition, is a poetic tale about some event, character, area, closely related to myth. The main implication of Irving’s short stories is rather not the poetization of everyday life, but the poetization of the past in this life, the peculiar coloring of the first settlers that has departed, ”L. Romanchuk notes in his article“ Fiction in V. Irving’s short stories.

Irving spent several years (1826-29) in Spain studying manuscripts and books dating back to the American discovery. In Madrid, he comes to the disposal of A. Everett, who headed the American diplomatic mission, who offered Irving to translate a number of documents related to the travels of Columbus. In 1828, Irving published The Life and Travels of Christopher Columbus in three volumes, a comprehensive historical and biographical work in which he seeks to elevate Columbus into a kind of romantic archetype of a dreamer, gifted with a rich and at the same time dazzling imagination and, by virtue of this, doomed to eternal quest and suffering. Three years later, this work was supplemented by Travels and Discoveries of the Companions of Columbus. Irving was carried away by the study of Arab-Spanish history and the Reconquista (“Chronicle of the conquest of Granada”, 1829- a semi-fictional chronicle of the struggle of the Spaniards with the Moors, which he allegedly translated from a medieval manuscript attributed to him by the Dominican monk Antonio Agapida). In Spain, Irving ends up in the famous Alhambra Palace, a three-month stay in which inspires him to write a book of the same name, containing, in addition to historical descriptions and essays, many magnificent legends that have become favorite short stories of millions of readers (including A.S. Pushkin, who borrowed elements of the legend of the Golden Cockerel).

By the end of the 1820s, his popularity as a writer and thinker was so high that Irving was elected an honorary member of the Real Academia de la Historia (1828) in Spain. A year later, in London, he receives a gold medal in history from the Royal Society of Literature (Royal Society of Literature), and soon honorary degrees from Oxford, Columbia University and Harvard. In 1829-1832, Irving served as an attaché at the American Legation in London. When in 1832 Washington Irving returned to his homeland in the United States, he was awaited by a triumphant reception and the glory of a living classic.

The book of the Alhambra series of short stories was published in 1832, the year of his arrival in his homeland, where he returned as a famous writer and national hero. Subsequently, Irving supplements and reworks the Alhambra until 1851. At home, Irving continues to travel – in 1833 he sets off along the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, came into contact with the life of the American frontier. Three new volumes of entertaining essays on the prairie, the pioneers and the Indians are published – Journey on the Prairie (1835), Astoria (1836) and The Adventures of Captain Bonville (1837). In 1836, Irving moved to the town of Tarrytown and settled in his Dutch-built manor Sunnyside on the Hudson, near Sleepy Hollow and away from New York.

In 1842, Irving visits Spain for the second time as an American ambassador, having spent four years at the Spanish court on assignment from US President Tyler. Upon his return, he finally settled in Tarrytown where, in seclusion, he wrote biographical books and gave light on political issues. The Arab-Muslim theme continued to occupy the writer – he writes “Legends of the conquest of Spain” and “Mohammed and his successors” (1849).

After the death of his fiancée Matilda Hoffmann, Irving never married or had children. For a quarter of a century he lived in Sunnyside with his younger brother Ebenezer and his five daughters, who became his real family.

His first Complete Works appeared in New York in 1848-50 and then in London in 1851 (in 15 volumes). After the death of Irving, in 1860-61 his complete works (21 volumes) were published. The most complete collection of his works to date was released in the United States in 30 volumes published over 20 years (1969-1989).

A few months before Washington’s death, Irving completed a five-volume biography of George Washington. Irving considered biographical books to be his most significant works, but ironically, it was his short stories from three European collections, in which the spirit of the first Dutch settlers hovers, ironic stories about America and the mores of its people, that have become classics today. Washington Irving died at his home in Tarrytown, New York, on the eve of the Civil War. On the day of Irving’s funeral December 1, 1859All shops were closed, the city was in mourning. He was buried in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery near the Old Dutch Church.

In Russia during the Pushkin era, Irving’s stories were published in many periodicals (Athene, Telescope, Moscow Telegraph, Literaturnaya Gazeta, etc.). The story “Rip Van Winkle”, for example, was first translated into Russian by the Decembrist Nikolai Bestuzhev, and the story “The Life of Mohammed” by Peter Kireevsky.

Based on materials from sources: http://www.irwing.ru/

(*) Many of W. Irving’s works were translated almost two centuries ago, as a result – in the titles of the works one can find obsolete spellings of words (for example, “Bachelor”, “Antique”) the names of cities, localities (for example, “Stratford on Avon” ).

John Winslow Irving ( John Wallace Blunt, Jr. ) is an American novelist and screenwriter. Since 1961 he studied at the universities of Iowa, Vienna, Pittsburgh, in 1965 he received a bachelor’s degree with honors from the University of New Hampshire.

Irving’s first novel, “Free the Bears” (other translation “Unleash the Bears”) 1968 was well received by the public, among others, Kurt Vonnegut spoke well of the book, who, by the way, was one of Irving’s teachers at the Writing Workshop of the University of Iowa.

Recurring themes

In Irving’s works, the same themes, symbols, types of characters, cities and places are constantly found. These “recurring stories” include New England (a region in the northwest of the United States), Vienna, bears, prostitutes, writers of various kinds (writers, journalists, authors of children’s books, diaries, family chronicles), wrestling (sport) , fatal accidents, children abandoned by one (or both) parents, participation in filming, atypical sexual relationships (incest, bestiality, relationships between a young man and an older woman). Also, from one novel by Irving to another, the image of a woman is daring and pretentious, but at the same time fragile and tender.

We’ll go globetrotting to the country where the boomerang originated – AUSTRALIA! From Alice Springs to Sydney, campers will explore the claims to fame of some of the cities we’ll visit virtually while sampling their foods, music, traditions, sports, and more.

We’ll score some good old-fashioned fun by playing the best indoor and outdoor games of all time, then use our imaginations to make up a few new games of our own. During potluck playtime, our campers will bring their favorite game to share with their friends.

We’ll explore some of the most popular movies, movie characters, and genres of the last few decades. We’ll work together to dream up our own movie concept, design a set, and film a trailer.

We’ll pay a virtual visit to the beaches in Australia. We’ll take a deep dive into the Great Barrier Reef and learn about a variety of ocean creatures that call it home. The creation of beautiful sand art, traditional beach games like the Limbo, and a water play day will round out the week.

In addition to exploring how our favorite superheroes first got their start, we’ll also discuss real-life heroes like healthcare workers, first responders, astronauts, sports figures, teachers, and more. We’ll incorporate dress-up days to pay tribute to some of our fave figures from fiction, careers, and sports.

We’ll start the week by discussing the importance of the three R’s – recycle, reduce and reuse, then add one of our own… REIMAGINE. We’ll upcycle common household items by transforming them into something entirely new – whether it’s a work of art or something inventively functional.

Campers will draw inspiration from the Earth and create art using several different media and natural materials. We’ll explore poetry and songs inspired by the natural world, try our hand at Haiku and host an art show at the end of the week.

This wild week features an exploration of the fashion, music, historic high points, movies, and moves of the ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s. The last day will feature a flash FORWARD, as our campers create a whole new look and dance that they believe will mark the hottest trends in the future.

We’ll explore a variety of other fun flying objects – like propeller sticks and drones – then design, create and fly our own paper airplanes. At the heart of this STEM-based week, we’ll reimagine everyday items into new gliding gizmos to show off to families during our Invention Convention on the last day of the week.

We’ll cook up a ton of fun this week as we learn how our taste buds work with regard to sweet vs. sour vs. salty foods. The week ends with a pot luck dinner featuring a favorite dish from each of our campers.

Abracadabra! We’ll learn a few basic magic tricks to wow our friends and family members. From chemical reactions and crystal formations to how seeds grow into plants, we’ll take a peek behind the curtain to learn the science behind it.

Kangaroos, koalas, and dingoes – oh my! This week will entail some enlightening discussions about animals that can only be found on the Australian continent. We’ll also talk about habitats, share photos and stories about our pets, watch movies where animals are the star of the show, and visit a local petting zoo.

Holidays coming soon? Most parents prefer Russian camps. On our site “Camps in Russia” is the most numerous section in the catalog (more than 3200!!!), and here’s why.

A camp for children in Russia is:

  • inexpensive, often preferential vouchers
  • cost compensation from the FSS
  • close to home (but not always)
  • parental days
  • no flights/transfers (if close to home)
  • own, Russian guys
  • no acclimatization/visas/foreign language environment

In short, the most popular holiday option for our boys and girls.

According to statistics, in 2017 the number of children in the Russian Federation reached its maximum over the past 15 years and amounted to almost 27 million! There are about 16 million children aged 7 to 15 in Russia, of whom a little more than 6 million go to camps every year. Moreover, 70% rest in Russian camps. Such DOLs, located close to home, remain more preferable for parents. There are several reasons for this.

Firstly, as a rule, a trip is cheaper for the parent’s pocket, because there is no need to spend money on flights or moving.

Secondly, you do not need to adapt to a foreign climate and mentality, you can speak your native language and not feel like a foreigner, and, finally, most importantly, if any problems arise at any time, without waiting for the end of the shift, you can go home All you have to do is call your parents! But when choosing a camp from our extensive base, keep in mind: due to the vastness of our Motherland, vacations on the same Black Sea in some respects can be equated with vacations abroad – you can’t just take your son or daughter from there and you’ll have to go through acclimatization!

Thirdly, as you know, many working parents only partly pay for trips to camps. The Social Insurance Fund helps, which reimburses part of the cost. But, what is important, the FSS works only with domestic health institutions. Moms and dads will have to pay for all trips to foreign camps out of their own pockets.

The tradition of going to the camp in summer dates back to Soviet times. Then the organization of children’s recreation was at an exceptional level. Almost every child, even from an unsecured family, could go to a pioneer or health camp. Subsidies from the state and enterprises were significant, often vouchers were provided free of charge. Almost every large plant or enterprise had its own, departmental camp for the children of employees.

In the 90s of the last century, the situation changed radically, the mass closure of pioneer camps became a widespread phenomenon. But schoolchildren got a real opportunity to go on vacation or study abroad. International children’s camps have become (and still remain) a real alternative to traditional pioneer camps. But despite this, many parents do not want to let their children go far for the holidays. If you are one of them, choose the Russian camp! Among more than 3000 camps in the Russian Federation on Children-Travel. ru, there is definitely THE ONE!

    Our Stellar Reviews

    Jennifer L.

My children have been a proud students of KAPT for 6 years. I love how much the kids learn without even knowing it! Everyone at KAPT has become part of our extended family. My sons love the experiments, playing outside and all of the field trips. Mrs. Jamie and her team always find new and exciting ways for the kids to learn no matter the age. I highly recommend this school to everyone. I would not leave my kids with anyone else. They treat the kids like they are their own which is amazing!

    J.Rogillio

I wish there were a rating greater than five stars! My kids loved their years from babies to Pre-K at Kids Are People Too. The staff became family over the years, and the value you get is truly worth it. Mrs. Jamie is beyond helpful in working with you to accommodate your schedule, child needs, payment plans, etc. For those looking for reliable and nurturing childcare for their kids, this is the best in the area.

    Brittany and Kevin T.

Our children have attended KAPT for 4 years and 2 years. We LOVE the amazing staff! My kids love pretty much everything about this school…they’re extremely excited to go to school every day. We highly recommend this school. The care and attention the staff gives to the kids is unmeasurable. The amount of knowledge my 5 year old has gotten from being in Pre-K here at KAPT is unbelievable. He blows us away daily from things he’s learned at school. The list goes on and on…

    Gabrielle

My son tells me every day when I pick him up how much fun he had and how much he loves school. That right there says a lot! The staff is amazing and understanding. They genuinely care about your child! And I love how the area is set up as well. The playground is completely covered, and classrooms are divided appropriately.

    Sara W.

I just teared up while I watched the videos from today, and Stephan told me all about his day this afternoon. We love KAPT so very much, and are so grateful for all you do for the kids. Sincerely. It is so evident that you put the kids firstand have the best interest at heart in all you do. Joseph was at two different daycares before he started school… Nowhere comes close to KAPT.

    Children are people too?

This creature believes that plants think and the sun shines only for him. Without prohibitions and punishments, his life is meaningless. Who is it?

Almost half of humanity consists of beings about which the other half knows very little. 2.2 billion is the number of children in the world, according to UNICEF. What do they think about, what do they feel, how, apart from appearance, do they differ from adults? And no matter how wild the question may sound: are they human?

“He who has never been a child cannot become an adult,” Charlie Chaplin once remarked. The problem is that few adults remember what it was like to be a child. This is especially true for parents and scientists. It’s even worse if the parent is also a scientist. Since both one and the second have a huge problem with the interpretation of the concept of children. They approach babies with adult measurements, and then get nervous when the kids don’t do what is expected of them.

    What are these strange creatures?

“Play with your child. Do not perceive him as a person, observe him the way a biologist observes a crocodile or a bird, advises the Dutch biologist Midas Dekkers in his recently published book “The Larva. From child to person. “Look at how he does everything wrong, how strange he moves, what nasty things he likes, think about what controls him.”

Dekkers argues that a child cannot be treated as a full-fledged representative of homo sapiens. Childhood is a temporary stage, like a human larva, which then hatches into an adult. Is this the degradation of the child to a lower being? Of course not. “A larva,” Dekkers continues, “is a separate creature with a full right to exist.

You just have to realize that a child is different. If we tried to portray the classic image of a representative of the human race, it would probably not be a child. “A person is someone on two legs who on a Friday night wishes a pleasant weekend,” writes Dekkers, “angry when he is fired from his job and proud of his car. This is someone who can open their mouth when other adults are talking. If anyone asks us, we do not deny that babies are also people of flesh and blood. But there is something strange about their appearance that does not allow us at first glance to see them as representatives of our type, let alone treat them as adults. Why?

“We don’t have a memory that would allow us to remember what we felt as a child,” says Edita Grushczyk-Kolczynska, professor at the Warsaw Pedagogical Academy. – The child looks like a small person, so adults endow him with their way of thinking, their vision of the world. They do this because they can’t remember how they thought, understood when they were as old as their baby. Serious research is needed to understand how a child perceives the world. Although each of us was a child and looked at the world with children’s eyes. Only a very intelligent person, who knows that a child cannot have such knowledge, experience and emotions as he does, can come close to his level. And what about people who do not have this understanding?

There are two strategies. The first is the attitude to the child as to a small adult. The second is infantilization and neglect of the abilities and capabilities of a small person. I propose to focus on the first strategy, because it will clearly show us how children differ from people (adults).

    Important Rules

“One of the episodes of “Supernanny” (a TV program in which a specialist teacher is invited to the family – a supernanny for “difficult” children. – Editor’s note) was attended by a single mother with a three-year-old son. The boy behaved like an adult,” says psychologist Dorota Zawadzka, known to many Poles as a television super-nanny. – He had to make important decisions, his mother asked him about everything: what to wear, what to cook for dinner, where to go for a walk? As a result, the child was confused. In order for the baby to feel safe, it is we, the parents, who must determine for him the world in which he must exist. When the opposite happens, the child does not understand what is happening, begins to get angry, and sometimes take advantage of the situation. With a baby, partnerships at the adult level should never be allowed. Children should not take care of us, but we should take care of them. The example of a super-nanny is extreme, but it often happens that parents try to treat their child like an adult, because. they think that in this case he will love and respect them more. It is very difficult for many parents to say “no” to their child, they are afraid of inflicting psychological trauma on the child, they are afraid of not being “good” for the child.

“When do you want to go to bed? What will you have for breakfast? Maybe you want to go for a walk?” – such questions are absolutely normal in relation to adults, and completely meaningless when we have a child in front of us. We need to get rid of the belief that if a child makes decisions from an early age, he will become strong, resourceful, decisive. Everything is exactly the opposite! If children are asked such questions from an early age, they feel uncomfortable.

    — Clear rules, prohibitions are necessary for a child. Children need to define boundaries – this is possible, this is impossible. The boundaries that we outline to the child are life beacons, pointers, anchors that invariably allow you to navigate in the world of generally accepted norms, ”says psychologist Anna Brzezinskaya from the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. If there are no such anchors, then the situation becomes dangerous, the world becomes unpredictable and unstable.

The lower the child’s cognitive level, the more difficult it is for him. This is clearly seen in the behavior of infants when their daily routine is disrupted. The child can predict with his mind the sequence of what is happening. The norms that determine what is possible and what is not for older children are the same as the daily routine for an infant.

    Training, but with feeling

The stronger the iron grip, the more the child will achieve in life. “There is a certain amount of truth in this statement,” comments Dorota Zawadzka. “But we should not forget about feelings and respect towards the child. He cannot be beaten and humiliated, it is necessary to show your love, but at the same time require discipline. Some habits need to be developed at the level of reflexes, so that the word “stop” means “stop”, so that the child, for example, does not get hit by a car, so that “no” means “no”. I prefer explanations and conversations, but I think that this should be done in parallel with “training”, which teaches the child “do not touch”, “do not take someone else”, “no”, etc.

    — Whether we like it or not, the methods I use in raising children are based on the discoveries of animal psychology. Once I was at a party attended by representatives of the American embassy. One of the officials came up to me and said that he had watched “Supernanny” and liked it very much and asked me to train his dog. Against this background, the medical joke that the pediatrician is the same veterinarian does not look so shocking. I asked Dr. Matej Kubiak about the reason for such “black humor”, to which he replied: a small patient, like animals, is not able to talk about what hurts him.

Medicine confirms that children and adults are different categories of living beings. Physicians-therapists treat children with a certain caution. This is a result of the fact that they may not respond adequately to many drugs and their symptoms may be atypical. For example, a common throat infection is not limited to the throat, it affects the whole body, so indigestion, vomiting, etc. appear. Children are physiologically not a small copy of an adult. This is the result of the fact that the child’s immune system is still weak. The resistance of his body is different, as well as the hormonal background, metabolism, so children have a normal temperature, which in an adult can indicate a serious illness.

A problem with the treatment of children arises from the fact that, for ethical reasons, clinical trials are not conducted on them. For this reason, the effect of a number of drugs has not been studied and side effects are unknown.

The sun is shining for me

Studies of the worldview of children surprise adults. “A child’s mind is a mystery to scientists,” says Professor Gruzchik-Kolchinskaya. We are carefully studying it. One of the most famous researchers of children’s thinking was the French scientist Jean Piaget. Thanks to him, we know how children comprehend the world. And these are very interesting ideas. The sun shines to keep me warm; the sky is angry, therefore there is a storm; flowers grow to be beautiful.

Scientists wouldn’t be scientists if these simple childish notions hadn’t been changed into cunning formulations. Children’s thinking is characterized by egocentrism, arteficialism, and animism. And now this is easier. First, children want to see everything from their point of view—egocentricity. They are sure: everything that surrounds them was made by people, so it can be canceled as soon as they want it – artificalism. And, finally, animals and plants feel and think, inanimate objects have animation – animism.

    – When I did research on the thinking of children, I looked at them as beings who develop like me, but at each stage of development they differ from me and my way of thinking. Taking a child seriously does not mean treating him like an adult. On the contrary, one must look at the world through his eyes. We must take children’s questions seriously, accept their doubts as natural, and not compare them with our own. Our task is to help the child move to the next stage of development, but at his pace, using his capabilities. It should not be surprising that a child does something wrong, such as painting purple leaves when he is five years old. An adult does not understand why a child cannot lace up shoes. After all, it’s so simple. But if the baby cannot do this, then it’s not so easy. Criticizing the child, we lower his self-esteem. Adults expect that the kid, when he has a certain task, will go through the same intellectual algorithm that an adult would go through.

For example, a child is asked to take away two fish from five. Five fish are visually shown to him, and then three whole and two skeletons. Someone ate two fish, adults suggest. They don’t understand that kids don’t think like that. For them, two skeletons, this is something that can neither be taken away nor multiplied. The kid thinks in other categories. Weird?

Let’s take off our adult glasses. A child is not a small adult. Then who? Human larva? A larva that will turn into a human. We very often treat children with disdain, saying: the child knows very little about the world of adults. Maybe we can finally admit that it’s mutual. It’s a pity, because this is valuable knowledge. Because thanks to this knowledge, it is possible to raise much better adults from our children.

Children are people too! TV presenter Andrey Maksimov on how to understand a child | education | SOCIETY

SPB.AIF.RU chose the most interesting practical advice from Maksimov.

    Reaching out to parents

“I love Petersburg, my third wife lived here, with whom I lived for 24 years. My son was born in this city, I remember the indescribable feeling when I left the Otto clinic with a child in my arms, the Peter and Paul Fortress and the Neva were visible nearby. Therefore, I have a special relationship with this city and I am very pleased that it was here that my books “Daddy’s Tales” and “Children are like a mirror” were published. The first book is addressed to dads who understand that in addition to work, they also need to take care of their children. I invite adults to invent fairy tales for children and tell them how to do it.

“Children are like a mirror” is a continuation of my crazy attempts to reach out to parents so that they stop doing what they do with their children. We have a country where the most unfortunate people are children. The child is completely helpless, anyone can reprimand him. Let me give you an example: if someone says that my hair is too long, then this is rudeness. And if you tell a child that he is poorly dressed, then this is education. The difference in attitudes towards adults and children just pisses me off. I see with my own eyes how parents, often good, responsible, loving, spoil the lives of their children. I hope that adults will change their attitude towards the younger generation and stop mocking them.”

“In addition to parents, the education of teenagers should be done by the school. Is she fulfilling her purpose?

“We must admit that there is simply no education system in our country. The school should solve two problems: to help the child understand that learning is great. And help him find his calling. The school does neither. Therefore, if parents want their children to be happy, educated, smart, they must do it themselves. Many people say: we don’t have time! To this I answer: do you guys grow tomatoes in the country? Vegetables take time, but a baby doesn’t? The country has good schools and amazing teachers. They are trying to sow the reasonable. But in general, the education system is in a state of constant reform, that is, repair. As a result, school is hard labor for children. From the 5th to the 11th grade, the child does not learn anything except how to answer the questions of the tests correctly.

Andrei Maksimov Photo: AiF / “Education is two things: one’s own example and conversation.”

“What advice would you give to teachers who have to work in such an imperfect education system?”

“The most important thing is to see people in children. It just seems to be very simple. For example, when a student comes to me and says: “I can’t study today, I have an affair,” I understand him. I ask: how much do you need to wake up, a week is enough? But it’s hard to imagine a situation when a third grader comes up to a teacher and says: I don’t want to study today because I’m tired. Are there many teachers who will enter into the position of a child?

    Parenting is not violence

“What do you say to parents who are too busy to find time to spend with their children?”

“I suggest that they do not be shy and write in their diaries the item: meet the child. There is nothing to be ashamed of. Many people live according to a schedule, and if they don’t mark “talk to their son” in the morning, they won’t do it. As a result, as Zhvanetsky says, parenthood turns into a bird profession: he ran, brought something in his beak, threw it away, flew away. There are many such parents. My children have always known that I am always available. Even if there is a shooting or some important meeting, then when they call, I interrupt business and talk. I think it’s right.”

“What should we talk about with children, because we are so different?”

“Yes, about everything! About their problems, about their own. With any children from two years old, you can talk about what worries the parent. And don’t be shy! Something is happening at work, so talk about it, you care about politics, talk about politics. If we want children to be sincere with us, then we must be the same. After all, they are learning from us. The most telling example is when a family comes to the toy store, the child falls to the floor and starts yelling: buy a car. How does he know that if he falls on his back and yells, they will buy him a toy? So, once the parents have already done it. So in this case, you need to step over the child and he will not do this again.

“Children are people who have their own characteristics.” Photo: www.globallookpress.com

We must tell children about our problems if we want them to share their experiences. We have adults: smart, earning, conscious. And there are such sub-humans – children, whom the majority treat as some kind of underdeveloped creatures that will someday begin to live. We need to get out of this generally accepted coordinate system and understand that children are people who have their own characteristics. If you realize this, then there will be no problem about what to talk to them about.”

“Should children be educated, to hammer different truths into their heads?”

“First of all, you need to talk to a child. Education is two things: one’s own example and conversation. Why do most people try to authoritatively raise children? Yes, because it’s fast! To say – do not do this is much easier and faster than to explain for a long time. There is another good principle: you should go to children not with answers, but with questions. After all, what do we say: “go do your homework”, “go eat”. Try asking a question and see how children’s perception changes: “Do you know what will happen if you don’t do your homework?” “Do you understand what will happen if you don’t eat?” Give children the opportunity to exist on their own. Education should be a conscious process, not violence.”

The right to make a mistake

“How to notice a vocation in a child and should you try to do it?”

“One of the greatest educators of the 18th-19th centuries, Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi, believed that one should find a calling at the age of 5-7. A vocation is not a way to make money, it is a desire. If you want to be happy, then work, like husband and wife, must be chosen for love, and not for convenience. When a child is 5 years old, it is necessary to offer him various options for developing interests: sports sections, drawing, music school. Then you need to set more complex tasks for the child. If it’s his business, then they turn them on, if not his, then he discards them. And do not tell the child in this case that he is a stupid lazy person. As a result of the research, there is a case that the child needs. In the process of searching, the child must be explained that the vocation should be directed to others. Playing on a computer cannot be a calling, but making computer games can! And do not forget that children have the right to make mistakes. Understanding a child’s calling is the hardest thing. But if it succeeds, it removes a huge number of problems. For example, many hours of sitting at the computer.

“But how to deal with the fact that children do not read? Why did gadgets replace reading for children?

“I don’t see a problem with children not reading books.

Carrie & Kevin Elwell to Open Second Kids ‘R’ Kids in Greater Tampa Area in 2016

    Ellie M., Neighbor

Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy, a national early childhood education franchise with three decades of experience, has announced that its Southshore owners, Carrie and Kevin Elwell, will be opening a new school in the Waterset community of Apollo Beach in 2016. Since opening their Gibsonton, Fla. location in August 2007, the Elwells have served thousands of Southshore families. To celebrate expansion into the Waterset area, the Elwells are hosting a Fall Festival for their current Southshore families on Nov. 14th.

The new school in Waterset will be located at the corner of Covington Garden and Parkshore Drive in Apollo Beach, Fla. It will create between 30 and 40 jobs in the community and will feature 10 classrooms, in addition to various enrichment classes. With plans to open in Fall 2016, the new school will be open (6 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.), Monday through Friday.

“We are privileged to continue to serve our Southshore families, while expanding next year to serve additional children and families in the growing Waterset area,” said Carrie Elwell. “With the Kids ‘R’ Kids advanced curriculum, we are able to create a strong foundation for each and every child that comes through our doors during the most crucial years of their development.”
