I remember well the moment I decided to write it. This was in the summer of 2012. My dear friend Elena Minchenya and I met at our favorite coffee shop in Minsk, and I shared my plan with her. I was burning with the desire to unravel the riddle that at that moment worried me more than others: why my relationship with my mother – the closest and dearest person – is so complicated and sometimes painful, both giving refuge and limiting the choice of life directions. 
Not being a mother, I had no access to the articulation of the experience of motherhood itself. But I took advantage of other opportunities, studying the social production of family roles, the cultural representation of the mother image, and the transformation of social conditions in which my contemporaries today not only care for children, but also decide whether to become mothers. 
The problem, however, is that the social order in which we live, by naturalizing maternal labor as “the natural need of women to take care of others,” makes this labor “invisible.” 
At the same time, maternal care does not imply guaranteed rest, is not counted in seniority, and is not considered work at all, since it is assumed that caring for others is a biological need for women. 
In subsequent chapters, referring to the social institution and ideology of motherhood, I will give many examples that demonstrate how the conditions develop under which the modern mother, in the popular imagination, is conceived not as a person, but as a serving function. 
Dad was distracted, but I, freed from supervision, went for a walk and moved away from the place where we were supposed to wait for mom, quite far. Having missed, the missing child was searched for about half an hour. When they found me, peacefully walking, my parents were beside themselves with emotions that overwhelmed them. Thirty-five years have passed since then, but I will always remember what happened next. 
Some part of my soul was frozen at that moment for many years – I do not doubt for a second the veracity of my mother’s intentions. 
But my attempts to discuss my childhood experience made my mother smile ironically, leading me to despair. However, several years ago, while experiencing public bullying on the Internet, I could not get out of the state of a frightened child for a long time, and my mother had to face the reservoir of my childhood pain, which is easily opened in certain circumstances. 
But one day something unexpected happened. Somehow, indulging in reminiscences in a conversation with a friend, I did not meet with the support of the dramatic pathos of my childhood story. 
The ability to fully concentrate on the child is not always available, since parents (usually mothers), bearing the primary responsibility for the well-being of children, take care of them in a situation of limited outside support. At the same time, not a single, even the most ardent and sacrificial attachment, makes the resources of the human body unlimited. So I managed to discover that I was not the only party affected in that situation. 
Due to the fact that I was fortunate enough to transform childhood trauma into experience, I can see my mother’s position in that story in more volume. Now I understand that she chose the best way available to her at that moment to tell me that my disappearance had driven her to despair; that small children should not go far, because they themselves cannot properly take care of their own safety. 
I am not trying to argue that childhood psychological trauma does not exist. I just want to draw attention to the fact that suffering is an integral part of human experience at any age and the mythologized figure of the mother is not able to get rid of them, no matter how people strive to give the best to their children. 
Today, a noticeable part of the cultural process is the statement that mothers “cripple” the child’s psyche with “wrong” upbringing, raising generations of “not adapted to life” people. 
In search of a response that would guide my thoughts, I published outlines of future chapters in various magazines.
