Helping Your Child Adjust to Preschool (for Parents)

Preschool lets kids be with peers and learn important life lessons such as how to share, take turns, and follow rules. It also can prepare them academically for kindergarten and beyond.

But going to preschool does come with some emotions, for both the parent and the child. For a child, being in a new preschool environment with unfamiliar teachers and kids can cause both anxiety and excitement. Parents might have mixed emotions about whether their child is ready for preschool.

Getting comfortable with your decision and the preschool setting can help you and your child feel ready.

Easing Your Child’s Fears

Talk with your child about preschool before it starts. In the months and weeks before school, gradually introduce your child to activities that often take place in a classroom. A child who’s used to scribbling with paper and crayons at home, for example, will find it comforting to know that there are crayons and paper in the preschool classroom.

Visit the preschool classroom with your child a few times before school starts. This can ease concerns about this new space. Visiting is also a chance to meet the teacher and ask questions about routines and common activities. You can introduce some of those routines and activities at home so they become familiar.

While you’re in the classroom, let your child explore and observe the class and choose whether to interact with other kids. This helps familiarize kids with the room and lets them explore the new toys they’ll play with when school starts.

You can also ask how the teacher handles the first tear-filled days. How will the first week be structured to make the change easier for your child?

As you support this important step your child is taking, don’t focus too much on the changes it brings. This could make any anxiety worse, and even young kids can pick up on their parents’ nonverbal cues. So while you might feel a little guilty or worried about leaving your child at preschool, be enthusiastic and talk about how fun it will be.  

The more calm and assured you are about your choice to send your child to preschool, the more confident your child will be.

The First Day

When you enter the classroom on the first day, calmly reintroduce the teacher to your child, then step back to allow the teacher to begin forming a relationship with your child. This will show your child that they will be happy and safe in the teacher’s care.

If your child clings to you or refuses to participate in the class, don’t get upset — this may only upset your child more. Always give a loving, consistent goodbye to your child, but once you do, leave promptly. Don’t sneak out. As tempting as it may be, leaving without saying goodbye can make kids feel abandoned. A long farewell, on the other hand, might only reinforce a child’s sense that preschool is a bad place.

A consistent and predictable farewell routine can make leaving easier. Some parents wave from outside the classroom window or make a funny goodbye face, while others have a special handshake before parting. Transitional objects — a family picture, a special doll, or a favorite blanket — can also help comfort a child. Also, keep in mind that most kids do well after their parents leave.

Whether your child is eager or reluctant to go to preschool, a school staff member should be ready to help with the transfer when you arrive. Some kids may jump right in with their classmates, while others might want a private cuddle from a caregiver before joining the group.

Many preschools begin with a daily ritual, such as circle time (when teachers and children talk about what they did the day before and the activities that are ahead for the day). Preschoolers tend to respond to this kind of predictability, and following a routine will help ease the move from home to school.

A new study finds preschool can be detrimental to children

FREE, UNIVERSAL preschool for three- and four-year-olds is a key component of the Democrats’ agenda. Proponents say pre-kindergarten, or pre-K, education can be transformative for children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds. A new study seems to contradict this. It finds that children who attended a pre-K programme in Tennessee actually scored worse on a range of education and behavioural measures. Yet this might reflect general improvements in early education rather than the impact of one programme.

Studies from the 1960s and 70s suggested that pre-K might be a silver bullet for improving the outcomes of poor children. In one striking example, those enrolled in the Perry Preschool Project, which targeted African-American children from low-income families, were by the age of five more than twice as likely to have an IQ above 90. As adults, they committed fewer crimes and earned more money. For every dollar spent, the programme generated nearly $13 in economic returns.

More recent results are far more nuanced (see chart). A meta-analysis of 22 experiments conducted between 1960 and 2016 shows that children who were enrolled in preschool were less likely to need special-education services or repeat years and graduated from high school at higher rates. But the improvements were small. One study published in 2021 of programmes in Boston found that attending preschool did not affect test scores in adolescence but did boost high-school graduation and college attendance.

The new study complicates the picture further. Researchers at Vanderbilt University followed nearly 3,000 disadvantaged Tennessee children, some of whom were randomly assigned places in a free pre-K programme. Like previous studies they found that attending preschool made children better-prepared for kindergarten. But the benefits ended there. Between third and sixth grade, the children who attended preschool did worse on standardised tests, had lower school attendance, racked up more disciplinary infractions and needed more special-education services.

The effects were small, however. The biggest differences were in sixth grade, where scores in reading and maths were between 1% and 4% lower than for children who were not given spots in the programmes. In the context of previous studies, this difference is modest.

Measuring the impact of pre-K is difficult. Many of the effects don’t emerge until later in life. And the effect of individual programmes is becoming harder to isolate. In the Tennessee study 18% of children in the control group enrolled in Head Start, a programme offering early education, nutrition and health care to children from low-income families. A further 16% attended private day-care centres. Parenting has also changed a lot since the 1960s: parents are more hands-on, and home-educational resources have vastly improved.

The quality of pre-K instruction may have deteriorated, too. Programmes have expanded. Teacher-student ratios in Tennessee were double those in the Perry project. And America has the third-lowest spending on early-childhood education among 36 mostly rich OECD countries.

Even if pre-K programmes are only as good as the alternatives, they help in other ways. They allow parents to return to work. A number of papers have found that the economic benefits of child-care or pre-K programmes vastly outweigh the costs. ■

Preschool age in developmental psychology is defined as the period from 3 to 7 years. At this time, the pace of development of the child is no longer as intense as in early childhood. However, this period is also important for the physical and mental development of the child.

Features of preschool children

Preschool age is a fairly long period during which a child consistently develops various neoplasms. In developmental psychology, it is customary to divide the preschool age into three main stages.

Younger preschool age

Younger preschool age is the period from 3 to 4 years of a baby’s life. At this time, the child moves from a joint position with parents to a separate “I”, but in many situations he still cannot do without the help of an adult. In turn, parents still see in their child a helpless baby who needs to be protected as much as possible from the dangers of the outside world. But by such a deprivation of independence, they can additionally provoke conflicts with him just because of the restriction of freedom. The orientation of the interests of the child of primary preschool age changes markedly. If earlier he was interested in the surrounding objects, now he wants to learn as much as possible about the interaction of people. He observes adults and peers, taking some of their actions as a model for his own activities. Ultimately, this is projected onto the emergence of the role-playing game as a reflection of human relationships and social contacts. A very important point in the development of children of primary preschool age is the emergence of the ability to establish complex causal relationships. Now the child not only masters new ways of action – he knows not only what and how to do, but also what the action he performs will lead to.

Average preschool age

Average preschool age – the period from 4 to 5 years. The physical skills of the child continue to improve, and that is why in the middle group of the kindergarten it is extremely important to provide the kids with reasonable physical activity. Mental development is also active, including the ability to establish social contacts, which can be seen in the way children unite in small groups during play and learn to act together. There is an active development of play activity, as well as other actions that are no less important for the development of the child – design, visual activity. In this regard, the development of perception plays an important role, which normally becomes able to single out separate parts in the object under study and establish a connection between them. The ability to establish such connections leads the child to understand the need to supplement the picture of the world based on the knowledge received from an adult, therefore, by the fifth year of life, parents should be ready to answer numerous “why”, “how” and “what for”. The readiness to conduct a dialogue with the child, to discuss even simple things seriously and on an equal footing will direct the child’s cognitive activity in the right direction, as well as provide closer emotional contact with an adult.

Senior preschool age

Senior preschool age is the period of a child’s development from 5 to 7 years. Both parents and caregivers can easily notice that a child at this age is no longer as open as before. He begins to understand who he is (based on knowledge and ideas about himself) and what he is (self-esteem). These are two sides of self-consciousness as a system of ideas, assessments and images that relate to a person, in this case, to a child of senior preschool age. By the age of 7, the child has a fairly adequate self-esteem, but it can differ and be either overestimated or underestimated. Preschool children with unreasonably high self-esteem are usually more relaxed, less receptive to their failures and are not aware of them, and react sharply to the lack of praise and criticism. On the contrary, children with low self-esteem are extremely insecure, not sociable, and do not like to take the initiative.

Development of preschool children

Development of preschool children affects all systems and functions of the body, while physical and mental development do not proceed separately, but are closely interconnected. At this time, all classes with the child are held exclusively in the form of a game, while the effect can be achieved only if the child is an active participant in the game process, and not just a passive observer. Physical development The growth of the baby during the preschool period increases significantly – by 20 or even 25 centimeters. Excitation processes predominate in the central nervous system, due to which preschool children are often restless and cannot do monotonous work for a long time. The cardiovascular system is also developing; the mass of the heart increases while the heart rate decreases. The physical development of preschool children largely depends on their physical activity; and when participating in outdoor games, and while practicing various sports, children improve their ability to navigate in space, balance improves, and new motor skills appear. Psychological features of preschool age

Want to like this game, but after using it with my kiddo for a few days, the audio stopped working. The iPhone audio works fine, we checked the settings, everything is toggled on “ON”. We now play other games and are unable to use this one. Seems that if it was functional, it would be a great product from an education standpoint.

N can be really big (several dozen), but we have 5 minutes.

Step #1. We are looking for and loading ready-made corpora of the Russian language. You can use whatever you can find. Recently a good selection was here. If it is not there, then you can look in the pantry.

At Just 4 Kids Learning Academy of JAX, Inc. our philosophy is to provide a caring, safe and loving environment for each child to progress. We take the approach to this philosophy through “Center Play” (learning centers). Through the mutual respect and cooperation of both parent and center staff, we hope to achieve and maintain the goal of what is best for the child.

Just 4 Kids Learning Academy of JAX, Inc. implements the following classroom curricula: Daily Character Education Activities for all ages; Foundations for Success and WEE Curriculum for Infants and Toddlers; Early Literacy and Learning Model/Plus (ELLM/Plus) and WEE Curriculum for 3’s and 4’s; “It’s OK to Play in VPK”, ELLM/Plus and WEE curricula are used for VPK; and school age children/summer camp utilize the WEE Curriculum and Character Education Activities for all ages. Since 2022, the Children’s Academy has received the status of an experimental site of the Russian Academy of Education and has entered the network of innovative schools within the framework of international cooperation.

OUR SCHOOL IS CREATED FOR THOSE WHO:
– understands the problems of a mass school and wants to teach their children in a small friendly class (up to 12 people) and a friendly environment;
– is set for an increased level of education for his child, which includes participation in olympiads, preparation of research and creative projects, development of logic and research skills;
– understands that the development of a child occurs through overcoming difficulties, and education is a two-way process, requiring the joint efforts of a teacher and a student;
– realizes that the child should receive not only subject knowledge, but also develop spiritually and creatively, be able to be not only successful, but also happy.

– creative (priority of creativity, a creative approach to mastering objects),

All these areas are implemented through school subjects, our author’s courses, and educational activities.

3. Alternative to the existing “mass” school, providing a high quality of education.

4. Intimacy. In small classes, there are much more opportunities to pay attention to each child, to see and solve the emerging problems of teaching, educating, and developing children. In a small school, every child is supervised, there is no bullying (aggressive relationships), the microclimate is positive.

5. We do not require vaccinations, this issue is decided by the parents themselves.

6. Education at school for 11 years in cooperation with educational and scientific institutions, centers, laboratories, quantoriums of our city.

Though it’s technically 12 miles east of Austin, near Bastrop, the local Dinosaur Park is a hotspot you won’t want to neglect if your little peeps are Prehistorically inclined. Unlike a traditional dino museum, this park features full-scale statues on a mile-long trail depicting the creatures as they were when they ruled the Earth, plus a Dino Dig for unearthing some life-size ‘fossils’.

On a nice afternoon, it’s an ideal site for a birthday or picnic. And if it’s the right season, the grounds offer up a fantastic lesson in local wildlife; you can often spot lizards, wild rabbits, large stick insects and roadrunners as you traverse the path.

As Central Texas’s biggest indoor playscape, it’s an ideal spot for hours of supervised, spatial fun. Better yet, if your underage urchins prove exhausting, there are plenty of comfortable couches in a central seating area where it’s easy enough to keep close watch. There’s also an arcade and restaurant to complete the party package, plus a toddlers-only area if you’re toting tykes on the younger side.

It’s common to witness a plethora of peacocks strolling casually among people at West Austin’s Mayfield Park and Preserve. You and your young ones can picnic or explore the gardens while watching the full mating and life cycles of this fascinating, nonaggressive avian family. whose original descendants were introduced in 1935. Primetime is late winter (February) through Spring (April/May), when the males begin fanning their elaborate plumage to court the females.

Best Things to Do in Austin with Kids

Austin, Texas has enough live music, breakfast tacos, and barbecue joints to keep its visitors toes tapping and bellies full for days on end. Its a vacation plan I heartily endorse: eat, dance, eat, sleep, repeat. You cant go wrong. These are the best things to do in Austin with kids.

Things to do in Austin TX with kids

1. Learn about STEAM at The Thinkery

Austin new childrens museum, The Thinkery, takes hands-on exploration to the next level. The museums exhibits revolve around STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math).

Theres a Kitchen Lab where food meets chemistry, a Light Lab where children can explore color, light, and shadows, and Spark Shop where families discover aerodynamics. Its the perfect spot for children to learn through play.

2. Explore Zilker Park

Zilker Park is a must visit destination for families. The park covers over 350 acres in the middle of the city and offers endless outdoor adventures. Theres a hiking/biking trail, an outdoor pool fed by a natural spring (Barton Springs Pool), kayaks and canoes for rent, and even a miniature train (the Zilker Zephyr).

Zilker is also home to a botanical garden, Austin Nature and Science Center, a sculpture garden, and theatre. Plan on spending half a day at the park.

If you are looking for fun things to do in Austin with kids, no trip is complete without a swim in the icy cold water of Zilker Parks Barton Springs! A three-acre recreational pool created by floodgates along Barton Creek, this natural water pool remains a chilly 68 degrees year-round.

3. See the bats under Congress Avenue bridge

Austin boasts the largest urban bat colony in the world. On summer evenings, tourists and locals alike line the Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge to watch an estimated 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats emerge in search of food.

The bridge is the best place to spot the bats.

Bats usually emerge from under the bridge most evenings and create quite a scene (this is weather and time of year dependent).

If you choose to base yourself near the bridge near nightfall, bring something to protect yourselves from falling guano. Other options are a kayak tour on Lady Bird Lake, riding a Segway, or taking a boat ride to see the bats from a different point of view.

4. Learn about government at the Texas Capitol

The Texas State Capitol is a sight to behold as it is the sixth tallest state capitol in the U. S. and larger than the capitol in Washington, D.C.. Inside is just as stunning and free tours are offered daily, departing every 30 to 45 minutes.

Its the perfect way to introduce older children to the legal system as they have an opportunity to view the Supreme Court and the Senate and House chambers. Bring your camera to take in the beautiful architectural details inside and out!

5. Soak up the local culture with a South Congress Avenue stroll

South Congress is perfect for strolling, eating, and getting a taste of Austin character. Kids will love the Big Top Candy Shop with treats from floor to ceiling, playing outdoor games at TOMS shoe and coffee shop, and playing dress up at Lucy in Disguise with Diamonds (a costume shop).

Of course there are plenty of fun spots for mom and dad too, like Allen Boots (a chance to grab the perfect Texas souvenir) and Jos Coffee Shop with its delicious coffee and prime location for people watching.

6. Hit all the best Austin food spots

Of course I need to mention South Congress has some of the most amazing food options in the city. Kids will love Home Slice for its massive pizza slices, Torchys Tacos (an Austin staple), and Hopdoddy Burger Bar (where the lines always seem out the door and down the street).

For sweet treats, theres a food trailer park just down the street from Home Slice called Hey Cupcake! and the other direction is Amys Ice Cream where everyone makes their own ice cream creations.

So many decisions…

Food trucks are quite popular in Austin, so dont miss the ones on South First, including Mellizoz Tacos, Little Thai Food, and Gourdoughs (doughnuts).

If you want traditional Texas staples try Franklin Barbecue (frequently voted one of the best BBQ in Austin), Terry Blacks BBQ, or Lamberts Barbecue. For Mexican food head to Chuys, Fonda San Miguel, or Lichas Cantina.

7. Try a street art scavenger hunt

If you or your kids love street art, Austin is the place to be. From the Greetings from Austin mural to the Before I Die wall where kids can write about their hopes and dreams, its a fun place to get a map and go searching for all the spots! 8. Head up to Mount Bonnell for sunset views

Mount Bonnell is the perfect spot for a panoramic view of Austin and the surrounding area. It takes about 10 minutes to climb to the top, but seeing the city from this perspective is stunning. Head over close to sunset before heading out for a bite to eat. The entire experience shouldnt take more than 10 to 15 minutes.

9. Take a swim in the natural pools of Hamilton Pool Preserve and other outdoor spots

About 45 minutes from the city is this beautiful natural lagoon that has become quite popular. You have to make a reservation to visit Hamilton Pool and wear the right shoes because its a 10-15 minute walk to reach it.

An easy hike to the collapsed grotto and waterfall at Hamilton Pool Preserve is sure to delight the entire family. Small children enjoy wading along the pebble beach, and braver big kids can venture further into the depths of natural water for a swim.

Just be advised that there are no lifeguards and swimming is at your own risk. Reservations are now required during the busy season, May through September, due to the preserves immense popularity.

Also west of Austin, Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center offers guided weekend tours of the preserves lush canyon. Be sure to arrive early as tours fill quickly. You wont want to miss exploring a small cave and seeing a 40-foot waterfall!

Other natural swimming spots to consider are Krause Springs in Hill Country with 32 springs and two swimming pools and Blue Hole at Wimberley, a section of Cypress Creek perfect for swimming, located in the Hill Country as well.

10. Visit the essential museum of Texas history, The Bullock Texas State History Museum

The Bullock Museum tells the history of Texas through its collection of artifacts, photos, and hands-on experiences. Kids will love the IMAX movie theatre, the La Belle shipwreck exhibition, and ability to trace the states history through interactive exhibits. The museum also features rotating exhibits on the history of other subjects such as computer gaming and a collectors gallery.

11. Inner Space Cavern

If youre looking for a unique excursion that will make a lasting impression, take a guided tour of Inner Space Cavern in Georgetown. Explore caverns and natural wonders underground, then head up to the Inner Space Mine and pan for gemstones.

12. Head to the Austin waterparks

Austin has two awesome waterparks close by, both of which are worth the drive. Head south to Schlitterbahn New Braunfels, a 70-acre outdoor water park along the banks of the Comal River which boasts 40 attractions for all ages and heights. Parking and coolers are free, so pack a picnic and plan to stay for the day.

Or, head north to Typhoon Texas in Pflugerville, and enjoy a day of play at the combined water and adventure parks. Youll be glad you did!

If youre bringing kids to visit The Lone Star State capital, and are feeling adventurous, strike out and explore beyond downtown Austin. You will be amazed at the beauty of the Texas Hill Country, and your kids will love it too!

We stayed at the Embassy Suites Downtown which has a convenient location and great free breakfast, other places to consider are the Four Seasons, Omni Barton Creek, and Fairmont Austin.

Context Travel is another option and they offer more educational based activities. The former teacher in me loves their tours.

One of our favorite things to do annually is take photos with Flytographer. They have photographers around the world and weve used them on four separate occasions. This is our favorite travel souvenir.

With the state of travel these days, its important to have some type of travel insurance to cover any unforeseen accidents, illnesses, threat or cancellations. Reading Comprehension Questions to Ask During Story Time | Scholastic

Let’s face it: In everyone’s super busy schedules, settling in with your kids for to read a story is such precious time. But you can make it even more valuable and boost the skills your child gets out of reading by asking a few strategic questions. As a bonus, it’ll make the reading experience more interesting and engaging for both of you!

“When you ask questions during story time, it really helps children learn to be active readers and to think critically,” says Tammy Milby, Ph.D., director of reading in the Department of Education at the University of Richmond. “When parents can get kids thinking and discussing a text, it makes story time a richer experience.”

Ask these questions before, during, and after a story to encourage your young learner to think about the text in a more in-depth way (it’s OK if your child can’t read independently yet!). 

Before You Read

1. What do you think might happen in this story?

Jumpstart your child’s creativity and attention to detail! “This question helps children notice and think about clues from the title and illustrations,” says Milby. What’s more, it piques their interest in the book, while encouraging them to think about any background knowledge they have on the story’s topic to make predictions.

In general, try to keep your questions open-ended (Ask, “What do you think this story is about?” rather than, “Do you think this story is about a superhero?”). “Open-ended questions facilitate conversation and vocabulary building by giving the child the chance to formulate a full response,” adds Milby.

While You Read

2. What word do you think should come next?

Every so often, cover a word in a sentence and ask this question. “It helps with children’s syntax, because they’re indirectly noticing that they need to choose either a noun, adjective, verb, or so forth based on what helps the sentence make sense,” says Andrew DiNapoli, director of curriculum at the Baldwin School District in New York.

It also encourages observational skills, since your child will choose a word based on what they’ve learned about the story so far (perhaps every sentence ends with a word that rhymes with “cat”) or what they decipher from the illustrations (perhaps there’s a rat in the picture).  

3. What was that character’s name again?

Simple recall questions help you gauge your child’s reading comprehension. It’s common for a child to skim past words or names they’re not familiar with, but remembering these basic facts helps them to better answer more complex comprehension questions later on, and boosts attention and memory skills. What’s more, knowing all of the important details will help make the rest of the book far more engaging and enjoyable. If necessary, flip back through the pages to find the answer together.

4. Which words do you think best describe this character?

When your child thinks about a character’s traits, they may begin to decide if they would make the same decisions as that character. It also encourages your child to consider the relationships between characters. “Understanding those relationships leads to a better comprehension of the overall story,” says DiNapoli. “Seeing certain relationships — say, that between a mother and a child — helps the reader better understand the character’s ability to move through specific challenges and conflicts. ”

5. Does anything in this book seem familiar to you?

You could also phrase this question as: “Can you make a connection between what’s happening in this book and something in your own life?”. “We want kids to make these powerful connections to their world because it helps them to better understand what’s happening around them,” says Milby. 

After You Read

6. How might this story be different if it was told from another character’s point of view?

This question encourages your child’s reasoning skills. “At this point, they’re thinking about the big ideas within the story, but also the authorial moves that were made,” says DiNapoli. “The author made a decision by telling the story from a certain point of view, but if you tell it from another character’s point of view, the plot might change.” Consequentially, to answer, your child will need to consider how the characters, setting, and structure are connected.

7. Can you make up a different ending to this story?

Your child will need to reflect on the story to answer this question, and will also need to think comprehensively about the various routes the plot could have taken. “If the theme of the story is honesty, then they might brainstorm other solutions to the plot’s conflict that reflect that theme,” says DiNapoli. For the more advanced reader, you may even ask, “Can you create an ending to the story that shows how the characters solved the problem in a different way?”

If you’d like to have a difference between both grades, one suggestion is to ask the questions orally in 1st grade, and have them write their answers on a paper in 2nd grade. This will give them practice learning to spell the months.

• What is the 7th month of the year?
• If we’re in October, what month will it be 6 months from now?

Starting a conversation with your kids, however, can sometimes be easier said than done. Many questions that parents ask their kids can easily be shut down with a simple “yes” or “no” answer. It’s important that we ask our children open ended questions that leave plenty of room for them to answer and elaborate.

It’s also important to make the questions fun and interactive. One way to do this might be to get a large jar. Have your children help decorate it. Then, on colourful slips of paper, write out all of the questions you can think of that might start a good conversation. Fill the jar with the questions and at dinner time each night, have your children take turns drawing a question out of the jar. The question of the night can then become a family discussion. This can be a fun and interactive way to get your children excited and engaged about having conversations with the whole family.

Remember, the sky is the limit when it comes to what questions you might choose to ask your kids. The questions can be tailored to your child’s individual interests. For instance, if they are interested in superheroes, or certain book/movie characters, or cars — you can word your questions to reflect that interest.

What time is it? Talking about time in English

Time is the basis of life, and every new day is an opportunity to spend time usefully. Every day we are faced with the concept of time: when we arrange a meeting with a friend, make an appointment with a doctor, book a table in a restaurant, or simply tell the exact hour to a passerby on the street.

English learners need to know how to specify the exact time of day, and today we will figure out how to do this so as not to mislead anyone.

Time of day in English

Time (time) consists of such basic concepts as seconds (seconds), minutes (minutes), hours (hours) and longer ones, such as days (days), weeks ( weeks), years (years), centuries (centuries) and others.

First of all, you need to know the numbers on the dial and a kind of scheme by which you can tell about any time.

If the clock is at even time (one, three o’clock, five o’clock, etc. ), then the most common way to tell it is by simply adding o’clock to the number:

There are also more refined options for telling the exact time, but they are much less common in speech:

It’s five o’clock sharp – It’s exactly five o’clock now
It’s ten o’clock on the dot – Now it’s ten o’clock on the minute

If the clock shows exactly 30 minutes, then we use the expression half past (half after…).

Moreover, if in Russian we usually say that the time is “half of such and such an hour”, then the British will call the same time as “thirty minutes after such and such an hour”.

It’s half past seven – Half after seven = Half past seven = Seven thirty

> Fifteen minutes and any number of minutes

When the time on the clock is not exact, but with minutes, then here you need to remember a simple basic rule:

If the clock is less than 30 minutes, then we say past (after such and such an hour), if more than 30 minutes, then we say to (before such and such an hour). At the same time, the word itself minutes (minutes) is not called, but it is implied.

And again, the rule that we learned a little higher is observed: what is ten minutes after two for a Russian-speaking person, then for an Englishman – ten minutes after two.

This rule is hard to get used to, but with a little practice, you can always keep it in your head in case you need to say the exact time in a conversation.

For example:

It’s five past four – Five minutes after four = Five minutes past five
It’s five to four – Five minutes to four = Five to four

It’s twenty past nine
It’s twenty to nine – Twenty minutes to nine = Twenty minutes to nine
