Literature

Why does Turgenev’s novel begin on May 20, 1859? Where did the author borrow Bazarov’s views from? Why are we told about the fatal love of Pavel Petrovich and the ring with the sphinx? Answers to these and other questions are in the new issue of the column about the secrets of great books

Author Alexey Vdovin

1. The mystery of the first phrase of the novel

In the first phrase of Fathers and Sons, Turgenev accurately names the date of the beginning of the novel:

“What, Pyotr, can’t you see yet? – Asked on May 20, 1859, going out without a hat on the low porch of an inn on the *** highway, a gentleman of about forty years old . .. “

Why 20 May 1859? We would never know the exact answer if the draft manuscript of the novel had not been found  The history of the study of “Fathers and Sons” is like a detective story. The draft manuscript of the novel was considered lost until in the middle of 19In the 1980s, the English antiquary Lord Parmur did not find it in Paris and did not report this sensational find to Academician D.S. Likhachev. He did everything to redeem the manuscript, which was almost put up for auction at Sotheby’s. Likhachev managed to convince the Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR N. I. Ryzhkov to find 400 thousand pounds sterling, and the unique autograph finally ended up in the Pushkin House in St. Petersburg, where it is still kept .. It turned out that at first Turgenev dated the arrival of Arkady and Bazarov to the Kirsanov estate 25 May. This very day 1859of the year was remembered by Turgenev by his meeting with his old friend Herzen in London after a long break. The friends were most likely discussing the famous article by the London émigré “Very dangerous!!!” directed against the views of Dobrolyubov and Chernyshevsky, two young radical critics of the Sovremennik magazine, and published in Kolokol on June 1.

Herzen’s article “Very dangerous!!!”. 1859 From the publication “The Bell. The first decade 1857-1867, London, Geneva, 1867

On that day, Turgenev appeared at Herzen’s house not alone, but with his younger friend and protégé, Elisey Kolbasin, also an employee of Sovremennik. It can be assumed that the conversation between Herzen, Turgenev and Kolbasin revolved around the conflict that flared up between the “fathers” (Herzen and Turgenev who took his side) and the “children” (Chernyshevsky and Dobrolyubov). Later, polishing the text, Turgenev decided, apparently, to abandon the overly straightforward allusion to the date of publication of Herzen’s article in order to remove possible projections and allusions.

2. The secret of Bazarov’s complexes

The protagonist of the novel Bazarov tells his friend Arkady and readers about his origin:

“- A good duchess,” Arkady objected, “from the first time she invited such strong aristocrats as we are with you. – Especially me, the future doctor, and the doctor’s son, and the deacon’s grandson … You know that I am the deacon’s grandson? ..
“Like Speransky,” Bazarov added after a short silence and twisted his lips.

In the preparatory materials for the novel, Bazarov’s genealogy was designated even more extensively: “the son of a doctor, who himself was the son of a priest.” Why did Turgenev give the hero such a social origin?

This decision is deeply logical: it is typical of the biographies of many doctors of the 19th century. The medical profession was perceived as unworthy of a nobleman. As a rule, children of the clergy (small and medium) became doctors in the 1850s. Graduates of theological seminaries often went to medical faculties for various reasons – some out of a desire to serve the common people, some because of the quota of the government, which specially recruited seminarians to fill empty due to lack of space in medical faculties. Bazarov’s father, Vasily Ivanovich, “was a strong Latinist,” that is, he did well in his time in Latin, apparently thanks to his seminary training, but then he served in the army and became a nobleman.

However, with the origin of Bazarov Sr. and the attitude of his son towards him in the novel, not everything is so simple. The researchers found that in a conversation about himself, Bazarov self-irically uses the aristocratic name “doctor”, looking at himself from the side, while other heroes of the novel call this profession “doctor” (or “doctor”). All this gives reason to suspect Bazarov of a social inferiority complex, which, judging by Turgenev’s hints, makes the hero return to this topic all the time and painfully beat it in conversations with the noblemen Kirsanovs. The integrity of Bazarov’s personality is thus in doubt.

3. Bazarov’s secret

Evgeny Bazarov informs Arkady that he has an angel’s day:

“Congratulate me,” Bazarov suddenly exclaimed, “today is the twenty-second of June, my angel’s day. Let’s see how he cares about me somehow. Today they are waiting for me at home,” he added, lowering his voice… “Well, they’ll wait, what’s the importance!”

However, researchers recently found out that Bazarov’s words do not correspond to reality: June 22 is the memorial day of the Hieromartyr Eusebius of Samosata, and Eugene is celebrated in winter and in March. What is it – a lie of Bazarov or an oversight of the author?

The most plausible explanation for this discrepancy is an accidental mistake by Turgenev, who probably checked the month-word for 1858 and 1859, where the day of Eugene of Samosata was erroneously indicated under the date June 22, and in the alphabetical list of saints at the end near Eusebius was the date June 22 . Another version – that Bazarov was baptized as Eusebius, but pious parents called him Enyusha (Zhenya) – seems unconvincing.

4. The Mystery of the Sphinx

Turgenev tells us the biography of Pavel Petrovich, and in particular talks about his fatal passion for a certain princess R. The lover gave the princess a ring with a sphinx – a symbol of mystery; the princess dies and before her death returns the gift:

“… he received a package addressed to him: it contained the ring he had given to the princess. She drew a cruciform line on the sphinx and told him to say that the cross is the key.

And yet, what is the key to the sphinx? To answer this question, let’s first ask it a little more broadly: why did Turgenev need the plot itself with Pavel Petrovich’s past love?

The fact is that, telling the story of Pavel Petrovich and Bazarov in parallel, pushing the antagonist heroes together, Turgenev hints that they clash not only because they belong to two different generations and two conflicting political camps, but also because in they have a lot in common. They are doubles, their characters are “mirrored” with the help of a whole system of doublet motives: both follow strict life principles, both have love failures that turn into psychological trauma, both cast loving glances at Fenechka, and, finally, both worship a fetish – each to his own.

Pavel Petrovich’s fetish is the ideal of Nelly R. fatal and with a “mysterious look”. He did not get rid of the passion for the dead princess, continuing to look for her image in women, and in an incomprehensible way found it in Fenechka.

Bazarov, studying the anatomy of the eye, does not believe in the “mysterious look”, but worships a different fetish – belief in his usefulness to the Russian peasant, who in fact does not understand him and takes him for a “pea jester”. Although in the novel the word “sphinx” is not put into the mouth of Bazarov, his attitude towards the people is conveyed through another ornate comparison with the mystical characters of Anna Ratcliffe’s gothic novels: “The Russian peasant is the same mysterious stranger that Mrs. Ratcliffe once talked so much about. Who will understand him? He doesn’t understand himself.” In 1862, in a letter to Pavel Annenkov, Turgenev already directly likened the Russian people to the “Sphinx”, and in 1878 he even composed a prose poem “The Sphinx” – exactly about this.

5. The mystery of Bazarov’s worldview

Nihilist Bazarov ponders:

“But I’m thinking: I’m lying here under a haystack… The narrow place that I occupy is so tiny in comparison with the rest of the space where I’m not there and where I don’t care; and the part of the time that I will be able to live is so insignificant before eternity, where I was not and will not be… And in this atom, in this mathematical point, the blood circulates, the brain works, it also wants something… What a disgrace! What nonsense!”

Everyone remembers well the materialistic views of Bazarov: the hero denies romanticism, religion, emphasizes the priority of sensations and reflexes, advises Nikolai Petrovich to read the then fashionable book “Matter and Force”. But what is nihilistic in his thoughts under the hay?!

Blaise Pascal. Engraving by Gerard Edelink. XVII century Bibliothèque nationale de France

Turgenev borrowed the hero’s materialistic views from the articles of Chernyshevsky, Dobrolyubov and partly Belinsky. But researchers have found that his reflections under the haystack have a completely different source: it is the skeptical philosophy of Blaise Pascal (whom the writer admired). Bazarov’s heartfelt monologue goes back to the following passage from Pascal’s “Thoughts”:

“I see these terrifying spaces of the universe that enclose me in themselves, I feel tied to one corner of this vast world, not knowing why I am placed in this and not another place, why the short time that is given to me to live assigned to me precisely at this, and not at another point in the whole eternity that preceded me and that follows me. From all sides I see only infinities that enclose me like an atom… All that I am aware of is only that I must die soon…” Quoted in P. D. Pervov’s translation of 1888.

It turns out that, in describing the views of Bazarov, Turgenev mixed in with the materialism of Chernyshevsky and Dobrolyubov a completely different philosophy from the venerable European tradition. It is obvious that with this and other philosophizing, after the outbreak of passion for Odintsova, Bazarov partly refutes himself – his complete denial of the spiritual and metaphysical side of life.

6. The mystery of Bazarov’s delirium

Bazarov dies, and his dying words are interrupted by delirium:

“Russia needs me… No, apparently not. And who is needed? A shoemaker is needed, a tailor is needed, a butcher … sells meat … a butcher … wait, I’m confused … There is a forest … “

What does the forest have to do with it? It is clear that you can’t say such things in delirium, but this is not real nonsense, but literary nonsense, which means there must be a clue.

And here it is: the forest in Bazarov’s delirium – from his own previous words. In the XVI chapter, in a dispute with Odintsova, the hero eloquently defends, as it seems to him, a scientific, correct view of a person, in which the individual psyche now plays no role:

“. .. It is not worth the trouble to study individuals. All people are similar to each other both in body and soul; each of us has a brain, spleen, heart, and lungs the same way; and the so-called moral qualities are the same for everyone: small modifications mean nothing. One human specimen is enough to judge all others. People are like trees in the forest; no botanist will deal with every single birch.”

Disagreeing with Bazarov, Odintsova thoughtfully repeats the phrase “trees in the forest” after him. The more the hero falls in love with Anna Sergeevna, the more romanticism he discovers in himself and the more angry he becomes with his weakness. It is at these moments that some force draws Bazarov into the same forest: “Then he went into the forest and walked along it with long steps, breaking the branches that came across and scolding both her and himself in an undertone” Chapter XVII ..

Finally, it finally becomes clear that the forest is a symbol and an important motif of the novel, when in a dream, before a duel with Pavel Petrovich, he appears to Bazarov as “a big forest with which he still had to fight” Chapter XXIV . .

The circle closes : the forest, consisting of many trees, turns into a symbol not just of a single person (Odintsova or Pavel Petrovich), who resists the hero, but also of the bottomless human psyche, the subconscious, which Bazarov strives for, but cannot comprehend, because he does not understand, why study them separately. That is why, before his death, Turgenev makes him see the forest again – this symbol of the unknowability of an alien soul. After all, according to the Russian proverb, a foreign soul is a dark forest.

7. The mystery of Bazarov’s death

Bazarov before his death. Illustration by Ivan Arkhipov. 1955 © Ivan Arkhipov / DETGIZ

Bazarov dies of typhoid infection:

“Three days later, Bazarov went into his father’s room and asked if he had a hellish stone?
– There is; what do you need?
– You need to… cauterize the wound.
– To whom?
– To yourself.
– How, yourself! Why is this? What is this wound? Where’s she?
– Right here, on the finger. Today I went to the village, you know, where the typhoid peasant was brought from. For some reason they were going to open it, but I haven’t practiced this for a long time.
– Well?
– Well, so I asked the county doctor; well, he cut himself.”

Why does Bazarov die like this? This memorable detail opens the way to answering one of the main questions for Turgenevologists – who exactly was the prototype of Bazarov. There are several answers to this question, and many of the prototypes are related to healing and fighting epidemics.

After the novel was published in 1862, Turgenev mentioned one of the prototypes – a provincial doctor Dmitriev, an accidental fellow traveler who told the writer in the Petersburg-Moscow train car about some new means of combating anthrax. Very soon, Turgenev learned that Dmitriev had died, which, obviously, influenced the formation of the finale of the novel with the death of the hero.

Disputes about other prototypes of the protagonist did not subside for more than a hundred years, until in 1984 Patrick Waddington published Turgenev’s notebook with preparatory materials for the novel, kept in a private Parisian archive. It turned out that when conceived of the main character in the summer of 1860, Turgenev kept in mind “a mixture of Dobrolyubov, Pavlov and Preobrazhensky.” If contemporaries immediately discerned the features of the famous critic Nikolai Dobrolyubov and broke many copies on this score, reproaching the writer for malicious irony in relation to the author of the article “The Dark Kingdom”, who died in 1861, then no one guessed about the other persons mentioned. Ivan Vasilyevich Pavlov, a doctor, writer, acquaintance and neighbor of Turgenev in Spassky-Lutovinov, was sharp-tongued and famous for his harsh judgments about literature, which was useful to the writer. Finally, Vasily Grigoryevich Preobrazhensky, a young zemstvo doctor and the son of the writer’s brother managing the estates, could be remembered by Turgenev for his selfless fight against cholera, which broke out in the neighboring Spassky district in 1855 and terrified the writer.

Finally, the surname Bazarov itself was well known in the late 1850s – in Tula, Ioann Grigoryevich Bazarov was a professor at the Theological Academy, and his son, Ioann Ioannovich, from 1844 was a priest of the Russian Church in Frankfurt am Main and the confessor of his daughter one of the great princes. In 1869, Turgenev met him personally in Stuttgart.

Peasant children – Nekrasov.

Full text of the poem – Peasant children

Again I am in the village. I go hunting,
I write my verses – life is easy.
Yesterday, tired of walking in the swamp,
I wandered into the barn and fell deeply asleep.
Woke up: in the wide cracks of the barn
Rays of cheerful sun look.
A dove is cooing; flying over the roof,
Young rooks cry;
Some other bird is also flying –
I recognized the crow just by the shadow;
Chu! some whisper… and here is a string
Along the slit of attentive eyes!
All gray, brown, blue eyes –
Mixed like flowers in a field.
They have so much peace, freedom and affection,
They have so much holy kindness!
I love the expression of a child’s eye,
I always recognize it.
I froze: tenderness touched my soul…
Chu! whisper again!

First time

Beard!

Second

A gentleman, they said!

Second

A bar does not have a beard – a mustache.

First

And the legs are long, like poles.

Black and white

Look, there’s a watch on the hat!

F

Oh, important thing!

Sixth

And a golden chain…

Seventh

Is tea expensive?

Wow

How the sun burns!

Baby

And there is a big, big dog!
Water is running from the tongue.

F

Shotgun! just look: double barrel,
Carved clasps…

Treat
_ (with fright)

Looks!

Black

Be quiet, nothing! Let’s stand still, Grisha!

Third party

It will kill…

My spies were frightened
And they rushed away: they heard a man,
So sparrows fly in a flock from the chaff.
I calmed down, squinted – they appeared again,
Little eyes flicker through the cracks.
What happened to me – they marveled at everything
And they pronounced my sentence:
– What a goose like that!
I would lie on my stove!
And apparently not a gentleman: how he was driving from the swamp,
So next to Gavrila . .. – “Hear, be silent!”

O dear rascals! Who often saw them,
He, I believe, loves peasant children;
But even if you hated them,
Reader, as “a low kind of people”, –
I still must confess openly,
That I often envy them:
So much poetry has been merged in their life,
How, God forbid, spoiled children yours.
Happy people! Neither science, nor bliss
They do not know in childhood.
I made mushroom raids with them:
I dug up the leaves, ransacked the stumps,0048 And in the morning I couldn’t find anything.
“Look, Savosya, what a ring!”
We both bent down, and at the same time grab
the Snake! I jumped: it hurt!
Savosya laughs: “Caught for nothing!”
But then we ruined them pretty much
And put them in a row on the railing of the bridge.
We must have been waiting for the feats of glory.
We had a big road:
People of working rank scurried
Along it without a number.
Vologda ditch digger,
Tinker, tailor, wool beater,
And then a citizen of the city
On the eve of the holiday, he rolls to pray.
Under our thick ancient elms
Tired people were drawn to rest.
The guys will surround: stories will begin
About Kyiv, about a Turk, about wonderful animals.
Another will play, so just hold on –
He will start from Volochka, it will reach Kazan “
Mimic Chukhna, Mordovians, Cheremis,
And amuse with a fairy tale, and twist a parable:
“Farewell, guys!
We had Vavilo, he lived richer than everyone else,
Yes, I once thought of murmuring at God, –
Since then, Vavilo has become shabby, ruined,
There is no honey from bees, harvest from the earth,
And only in one thing he was happy,
That the hair from his nose grew rapidly … “
The worker will arrange, lay out shells –
Planers, files, chisels, knives:
“Look, little devils!” And the children are happy,
How you saw, how you tinker – show them everything.
A passer-by will fall asleep to his jokes,
The guys get down to business – sawing and planing!
The saw will go out – you can’t sharpen it even in a day!
They break the drill and run away in fright.
It happened that whole days flew by here, –
Like a new passerby, then a new story …

Wow, it’s hot! .. Until noon, mushrooms were picked.
Here they came out of the forest – towards exactly
A blue ribbon, winding, long,
Meadow river; jumped off in a crowd,
And fair-haired heads over the desert river
What porcini mushrooms in a forest clearing!
The river resounded with both laughter and a howl:
Here a fight is not a fight, a game is not a game…
And the sun is scorching them with midday heat.
– Home, kids! it’s time to have dinner.—
We’ve returned. Everyone has a basket full,
And how many stories! Caught with a scythe,
Caught a hedgehog, got a little lost
And saw a wolf … oh, what a terrible one!
They offer flies and goats to the hedgehog,
Roots gave him his own milk –
He doesn’t drink! retreated…

Who catches leeches
On the lava, where the uterus beats the linen,
Who nurses his sister, two-year-old Glashka,
Who drags kvass on the reaping bucket,
And he, having tied his shirt under his throat,
Something mysteriously draws in the sand;
That one got into a puddle, and this one with a new one:
She wove herself a glorious wreath,
Everything is white, yellow, pale lilac
Yes, occasionally a red flower.
Those are sleeping in the sun, those are squatting.
Here is a girl catching a horse with a basket –
She caught it, jumped up and rides on it.
And is she, born under the heat of the sun
And brought home in an apron from the field,
To be afraid of her humble horse?

Mushroom time did not have time to depart,
Look – everyone’s lips are already black,
They filled the mouth: the blueberries are ripe!
And there are raspberries, lingonberries, walnuts!
A childish cry, repeated by an echo,
From morning until night, rumbles through the forests.
Frightened by singing, hooting, laughter,
Will the grouse take off, croaking to the chicks,
Will the hare jump up – sodom, turmoil!
Here is an old capercaillie with a slick wing
He was brought into the bush … well, the poor thing is bad!
They drag the living one to the village with triumph…

— Enough, Vanyusha! you walked a lot,
It’s time for work, dear! –
But even labor will turn first
To Vanyusha its smart side:
He sees how his father fertilizes the field,
How he throws grain into the loose earth,
How the field then begins to turn green,
How the ear grows, pours grain;
The finished harvest will be cut with sickles,
They will be tied up in sheaves, they will be brought to the barn,
They will dry it, beat it with flails,
They will grind it in the mill and bake bread.
A child will taste fresh bread
And in the field he more willingly runs after his father.
Will they wind up the senets: “Climb, little shooter!”
Vanyusha enters the village as a tsar…

However, envy in a noble child
It would be a pity for us to sow.
So, by the way, we are obliged to wrap
The other side of the medal.
Suppose a peasant child is free
Grows up without learning anything,
But he will grow up, if God pleases,
And nothing prevents him from bending.
Suppose he knows forest paths,
Prancing on horseback, not afraid of water,
But midges mercilessly eat him,
On the other hand, he is familiar with the works early…

Once, in the cold winter season,
I came out of the forest; there was severe frost.
I look, it slowly rises uphill
A horse carrying a cart of brushwood.
And, marching solemnly, in orderly calmness,
A little man is leading the horse by the bridle
In large boots, in a sheepskin coat,
In large mittens . .. and he himself with a fingernail!
– Hello, boy! – “Go past yourself!”
– You are too formidable, as I see it!
Where are the firewood from? – “From the forest, of course;
Father, you hear, he cuts, and I take him away.
(A woodcutter’s ax resounded in the forest.)
— Does your father have a big family?
“It’s a big family, but two people
A total of muzhiks: my father and me…”
— So there it is! And what is your name? – Vlas.
– Are you a year old? – “The sixth passed …
Well, dead!” the little one shouted in a bass voice,
rushed by the bridle and walked faster.
The sun shone so brightly on this picture,
The child was so hilariously small,
It was as if everything was made of cardboard,
As if I were in a children’s theater!
But the boy was a living, real boy,
And firewood, and brushwood, and a piebald horse,
And snow, lying to the windows of the village,
And cold fire of the winter sun –
Everything, everything was real Russian,
With the stigma of unsociable, deadly winters,
What is so painfully sweet to the Russian soul,
What instills Russian thoughts in the minds,
Those honest thoughts that have no will,
For which there is no death – press do not press,
In which there is so much malice and pain,
In which there is so much love!

Play now, children! Grow at will!
That’s why you’ve been given a red childhood,
To love this meager field forever,
So that it always seems sweet to you.
Keep your age-old heritage,
Love your working bread –
And let the charm of childhood poetry
Guide you into the depths of your native land! ..

Now it’s time for us to return to the beginning.
Noticing that the guys have become bolder, —
“Hey, thieves are coming! I called out to Fingal:
Steal, steal! Well, hide quickly!
Fingalushka made a serious face,
He buried my belongings under the hay,
He hid the game with special diligence,
He lay down at my feet and growled angrily.
An extensive field of canine science
He was perfectly familiar;
He started throwing out such things,
That the audience could not leave the place.
They wonder, they laugh! There is no time for fear!
Command themselves! – “Fingalka, die!”
– Don’t get stuck, Sergey! Don’t push, Kuzyakha, –
“Look – dying – look!”
I myself enjoyed, lying on the hay,
Their noisy fun. Suddenly it became dark
In the shed: it gets dark so quickly on the stage,
When the storm is destined to break out.
And exactly: a blow thundered over the barn,
A rain river poured into the barn,
The actor burst into a deafening bark,
And the audience gave an arrow!
The wide door unlocked, creaked,
Hit the wall, locked again.
I looked out: a dark cloud hung
Just above our theater.
In heavy rain the children fled
Barefoot to their village…
Faithful Fingal and I waited out the storm
And went out to look for great snipes.

Development of creative abilities of preschool children in project activities

about us

We are pleased to welcome you to the official website of the state budgetary educational institution of kindergarten No. 37 of the combined Vasileo VAMS SENT Petersburg!

“The purpose of teaching a child is to enable him to develop further without the help of a teacher”

E. Hubbard

Our mission: “We accompany the child in the beautiful world of childhood, develop the best, help fight difficulties, play and surprise you, give you calm and educate family values.”

Our mission determines the meaning and content of the activities of the kindergarten, emphasizing its most important role in a child’s life. Our pupils and their families, their needs, interests and desires are the basis of all activities of the kindergarten as an organization. The kindergarten’s mission also sets out the ambitious goal of our aspirations to become one of the city’s leading preschool educational organizations and highlights how important its employees are to the kindergarten, and how the realization of its goals is impossible without the realization of their personal and professional goals. High goals are achieved by a team of like-minded people who are united by a common system of values.

The policy of GBDOU Kindergarten No. 37 of the Vasileostrovsky District reflects the basic values of modern preschool education and its best traditions, orients the teaching staff towards meeting the leading needs of students, parents as their legal representatives and the constant self-development of the teaching staff itself. We provide conditions for the protection of life and strengthening the physical and mental health of pupils; socio-communicative, cognitive, artistic, aesthetic, speech and physical development of children. We carry out qualified correction of deficiencies in the speech development of children. We create conditions for social adaptation, socialization and development of tolerance for children from 3 to 7 years old. The main value for us is the strengthening of health and the comprehensive development of the child, taking into account individual and age characteristics. Therefore, highly qualified teachers work in our preschool educational institution, constantly improving their professional competence. This requires the participation in the educational process of a psychologist teacher, physical education instructor, music director and speech therapists who carry out correction, prevention, development and rehabilitation of pupils. We actively and fruitfully cooperate with medical institutions, the district network community of physical education instructors, which allows us to carry out activities to improve the health of our pupils. We promote the values of “family”, “parenthood” and “childhood”. To do this, we interact with the families of the pupils. In our preschool educational institution, interaction with the families of pupils is carried out by creating conditions for interactive communication between parents and children, providing advice to parents on the mental development of children and correcting their speech, health improvement, and methodological assistance on the upbringing and education of children.

Apache2 Debian Default Page: It works

Apache2 Debian Default Page

This is the default welcome page used to test the correct
operation of the Apache2 server after installation on Debian systems.
If you can read this page, it means that the Apache HTTP server installed at
this site is working properly. You should replace this file (located at
/var/www/html/index.html) before continuing to operate your HTTP server.

If you are a normal user of this web site and don’t know what this page is
about, this probably means that the site is currently unavailable due to
maintenance.
If the problem persists, please contact the site’s administrator.

Debian’s Apache2 default configuration is different from the
upstream default configuration, and split into several files optimized for
interaction with Debian tools. The configuration system is
fully documented in
/usr/share/doc/apache2/README.Debian.gz
. Refer to this for the full
documentation. Documentation for the web server itself can be
found by accessing the manual if the apache2-doc
package was installed on this server.

The configuration layout for an Apache2 web server installation on Debian systems is as follows:

/etc/apache2/
|-- apache2.conf
| `-- ports.conf
|-- mods-enabled
| |-- *.load
| `-- *.conf
|-- conf-enabled
| `-- *.conf
|-- sites-enabled
| `-- *.conf

  • apache2. conf is the main configuration
file. It puts the pieces together by including all remaining configuration
files when starting up the web server.
  • ports.conf is always included from the
main configuration file. It is used to determine the listening ports for
incoming connections, and this file can be customized anytime.
  • Configuration files in the mods-enabled/,
    conf-enabled/ and sites-enabled/ directories contain
particular configuration snippets which manage modules, global configuration
fragments, or virtual host configurations, respectively.
  • They are activated by symlinking available
    configuration files from their respective
*-available/ counterparts. These should be managed
    by using our helpers

    a2enmod,
    a2dismod,

    a2ensite,
    a2dissite,

    and

    a2enconf,
    a2disconf
. See their respective man pages for detailed information.

  • The binary is called apache2. Due to the use of
environment variables, in the default configuration, apache2 needs to be
    started/stopped with /etc/init.d/apache2 or apache2ctl.
Calling /usr/bin/apache2 directly will not work with the
    default configuration.

By default, Debian does not allow access through the web browser to
any file apart of those located in /var/www,
public_html
directories (when enabled) and /usr/share (for web
applications). If your site is using a web document root
located elsewhere (such as in /srv) you may need to whitelist your
document root directory in /etc/apache2/apache2.conf.

The default Debian document root is /var/www/html. You
can make your own virtual hosts under /var/www. This is different
to previous releases which provides better security out of the box.

Please use the reportbug tool to report bugs in the
Apache2 package with Debian. However, check existing bug reports before reporting a new bug.

Please report bugs specific to modules (such as PHP and others)
to respective packages, not to the web server itself.

Dmitry Petrov on how one rock festival changed humanity

Sometimes a few breakthrough hours in the space of culture are more effective than months of political struggle. 50 years ago, the Woodstock Festival became a powerful challenge to the mainstream and one of the most important events in the history of music of the 20th century. And at the same time, he influenced the worldview of mankind.

… At the end of July, the Internet informed the Russians that on August 3 and 4 a festival would be held in Moscow. Say, “the American Woodstock-50 has been canceled, and you can relax in Gorky Park” – to appreciate the classic and exotic, fish-meat-vegetable kebabs. Free admission!

And people appreciated. On Pushkinskaya embankment. And on Pushkinskaya Square and in other parts of the capital at that moment, other Muscovites demanded fair elections. And in the park above the river Chaif, Spleen, Bravo, 7B, Uma2rman, Tequilajazzz, Olga Kormukhina, Sveta Surganova, Yulia Chicherina and others played.

They kind of replaced the crowd Creedence, Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, The Who, Joan Baez, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and other heroes of Woodstock – a festival held in the States on August 1969th. And, as many believe, “changed modern culture.”

But what is “modern culture” anyway? After all, culture is constantly changing. Although sometimes other styles and codes dominate for a long time. But they also give way to unprecedented, unheard of, and even rejected at first movements, in turn changing the picture of the world of huge audiences.

In the 19th century, the Impressionists go through this – they are vilified in devastating articles and pictures, but the public accepts them. The same thing happened to futurism at the dawn of the 20th century, which declared itself the cultural weapon of the revolution. And in the USSR – with jazz and avant-garde in painting, sculpture, literature. The authorities see them as “the harmful influence of the West.” And she’s right.

The impulse of freedom charges the public, crumbles the concrete of socialist realism – one of the foundations of the “red project”. And Khrushchev’s pogrom hysteria at the avant-garde exhibition in the Manezh in 1962, the demolition of the rebellious “bulldozer” exhibition in the South-West of Moscow in 1974, the persecution of the authors of the Metropol who rebelled against censorship in 1980 are not accidental.

And in the “malicious West” everything (or almost everything) begins to change in the 50s. This time with music. The invasion of the world of other music is profusely described. Another thing is that it has merged with social protest for a long time – from hippies to movements for peace and the renewal of society. There were even people-signs of this rebellious community Joan Baez, Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan, John Lennon and many others.

This colossal ferment, invisibly to its participants, began to take in millions of dollars: fashion, music, lyrics, lifestyle flourished an incredibly financially capacious market for beauty, simplicity, social energy and rebellious ideas. All this cost a lot of money. In vain, perhaps the leader of the “Paris May” of 1968, Daniel Cohn-Bendit, called his memoirs about that brightest countercultural outbreak Le Grand Bazar – “The Grand Bazaar”.

Rock music, on the one hand, is a banner and an advertising banner, on the other, an aura, and on the third, the fuse of the 60-70s rebellion. And its important episode is a festival near the town of Woodstock (New York), named after him.

This plot is described in detail. But here’s what’s important: the producers want to sell 50,000 tickets. But they see: there will be many more people. And when the venue of the festival is moved again three days before the start, it remains for them either, by powerfully strengthening the fence and security, to cut off many guests (which is expensive and can cause a scandal), or to spend time and money on building a stage. They choose the second. The fence is being removed.

Admission is free! For nearly half a million members. And the producers, without making money on tickets, go down in history as the authors of a unique cultural event of the century.

The stage is set at the foot of the hill, which descends like a natural amphitheater to the pond, where soon the guests of the festival will swim naked to the music.

The people are pouring in. New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller calls: “I’m sending 10,000 policemen to you.”

– No! the hosts call. – Only not this!

And they try to explain: the arrival of the police is dangerous. Listeners and their favorite music will annoy law enforcement officers with backward tastes. And those – to piss off rock fans who remember how in Chicago the police just a year ago beat up liberal youth who cursed the Vietnam War. Do we need this hostility to escalate into a massacre? The wise governor hangs up. But the state of emergency in the county where Woodstock is located is still being introduced.

However, later it turns out: this is superfluous. For nearly half a million people, there are few accidents: one person dies from an overdose; the second – falling from a high structure; the third is under the wheels of the tractor.

“Everyone who has been to a big open air has, in a sense, been to Woodstock,” says Dan Shilnikov, a musician who has played with many Russian bands. — This is the prototype of the festivals as we know them today. With catharsis, chaos, dancing in the mud and showdowns behind the scenes. But that’s not why he’s a symbol. There have been big shows with big folk rockers before. But at Woodstock, for the first time, the audience became actors no less than the stars. People came from all over America and turned the festival into something more than a series of numbers. As for the music… Taking into account the participants, it couldn’t be bad there. Although personally, I would hardly listen to anything other than the killer set of Ten years after and Hendrix’s textbook version of the US anthem. Woodstock is more of a social phenomenon than a musical one.

Correct. This is an example of self-organization of people. The embodiment of their motto: “Make Love – Not War!” “Make love, not war!” And there is a sea of love. Hundreds of thousands of people live on it, music and freedom for three days. Their behavior is a manifesto: a world without violence is real.

And the manifesto is a challenge to a different vision of the world. The one where struggle is a condition for development; freedom is the camouflage of Orwellian slavery; violence is the main instrument of politics; dominance is a key function of power.

Music, songs, lifestyle of musicians, their fans and those who thought and felt like them, they say to America and the whole world: if today – 25 years after the wild world war – we want to live in harmony with our values, protect the free the world from the Soviets and Red China and be its beacon, if this is not a propaganda stamp, then it’s time to change yourself. Nobody likes this. This is hard work. But we have to.

We don’t have a reform program? She is. Not everyone, but there is. It is articulated by young liberal activists from the Students for a Democratic Society and Free Speech movements. Maybe we don’t all understand that we won’t always be young. But many are aware that soon one of us will replace legislators, officials, the military, “steering stock exchanges”, “industry captains”, “media and show business stars.” In the meantime, we are “rushing” from music, love and freedom in Woodstock. Let’s get together: Love And Peace Forever – “Love and peace – always!”

“Woodstock has made massive what used to be the lot of relatively small groups,” festival producer Alexander Cheparukhin sums up the essence of the matter with a succinct aphorism. “He turned a subculture into a culture.”

There are quite a few people who have been taught and taught: beautiful mottos hide evil thoughts, bright emblems hide dirty goals, gentle songs set up emotions, and pathos is bad.

It also happens. But the idealists (and, paradoxically, the pragmatists) of America and Europe in the 1960s did not think so. As now, millions of those who know: change is inevitable; sing about them and act for them.

What is the result?

Sometimes the world takes turns, after which it cannot remain the same. Oleg Chilap, leader of the Optimal Variant and Pchela-Band groups, believes that “they set a new coordinate system in the perception of the present and the future. If you look into the kaleidoscope labeled “Art”, then … academic music shuddered and changed forever after the premiere in 1913 of Stravinsky’s ballet “The Rite of Spring” … But the role of the “Woodstock Music and Art Fair”, now called “Woodstock” – more. She announced: the world is not black and white and linear, and the new generation is not the pawns of the “masters of life”. It’s a blessing to say, “I’m the Woodstock generation.” And “All you need is Love…”.

What to do if your child is missing

Together with the TASS news agency, we tell you what to do if your child is missing: there is not a minute to lose.

Where to go?

The parent, guardian or legal representative of the child must immediately report the loss by filing a police report or calling 112 (the unified emergency number).

Important: there is a misconception that you have to wait three days from the moment a person disappears in order to file a police report. Contact immediately – the duty officer does not have the right to refuse to accept your application.

If the missing person is found on his own in a couple of hours, no one will fine you, and the probability of finding a child, and even an adult who finds himself in a difficult situation, is much higher if you start looking for him immediately.

What to tell the police?

Take with you to the department documents proving your identity, if possible, documents of the child. Tell us about the special signs and clothes of the missing person, bring his photographs, give the number of his mobile phone or tablet.

If the child’s gadget is issued not to the parents, but to a third party, his statement of consent is also required.

Search and Rescue Squad “Lisa Alert” recommends that you take the contacts of the employee who will deal with your case in order to quickly contact him if the missing person returns home or new information appears about him.

What will the police do?

Police officers will issue a decision on the start of operational search activities using geolocation. This means that the police will be able to obtain information about the latest calls from the minor’s phone and the location of the gadget. The police will notify the court of the start of the operation. Within 48 hours from the start of the search, law enforcement officers will be required to obtain court permission to use the gadget in the search.

“The court will refuse only in exceptional, rare cases, if the procedure for starting the search for a missing child is violated – for example, there is no statement from parents or other legal representatives, or the child was found before consideration of the decision of the body of inquiry in court. This procedure is regulated by the law on operational-investigative activities,” explained Vasily Piskarev, Chairman of the Committee on Security and Anti-Corruption.

Piskarev
Vasily Ivanovich

Deputy of the State Duma elected as part of the federal list of candidates put forward by the All-Russian political party “UNITED RUSSIA”
.

Prior to the entry into force of the law to simplify the search for missing children, the police did not have the right to use the data from the child’s phone until a court decision. There is no opportunity to use the geolocation of gadgets when searching for adults even now.

Who else can help?

Assistance to law enforcement agencies in the search for missing persons is successfully provided by the volunteer detachments “Search for missing children” (8-499-686-02-01, around the clock) and “Lisa Alert” (8-800-700-54-52, around the clock ). They can also provide broad informational support and psychological assistance.

Such organizations will never ask you for money and will require you to file a complaint with the police first.

What should parents do?

Lisa Alert advises to thoroughly search the house and surroundings, as the child may have hidden or fallen asleep in the closet, in the attic, under the bed, or in some other secluded place.

Call the child’s friends and relatives, they may have the information you need.

Searching for a child on your own using social media posts can be a waste of time. “Psychics will call, false employees of anything and offer their services for money, assuring that they know exactly where the child is,” explains the coordinator of the Lisa Alert search and rescue team, senior in the Education and Forest in touch” Oleg Leonov.

The same applies to posting ads around the city with a photo of a child. However, if the orientations are compiled by a search organization or the police, and they contain the contacts of these organizations, then your help in distribution will only be welcome.

Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academies

In this exclusive Q&A, we get to learn about the Kids ‘R’ Kids franchise opportunity from the company’s CEO David Vinson.

Franchise Chatter (FC):  Tell us about Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academies.

David Vinson (DV):  We provide early education and care for children from six weeks through 12 years of age at nearly 160 schools in 16 states across the country, and this year we’ll open 16 international locations in China.

Programs include infant care, toddler and preschooler care, private pre-K and kindergarten, before-and- afterschool care, as well as winter and summer camp.

Our goal is to provide a secure, nurturing, and educational environment for children to bloom into responsible, considerate, and contributing members of society.

It all starts with the Kids ‘R’ Kids First Class Curriculum™, which includes theme-based units, specific learning activities, and teacher-friendly lesson plans for every developmental stage of education. We incorporate many other cutting-edge programs into our curriculum and offerings, like our exclusive Brain Waves™ Curriculum, as well as our newest proprietary curriculum, STEAM AHEAD™.

Our Academies offer parents the ability to view their children online and on their mobile devices for peace of mind through a secure video service called WatchMeGrow.

FC:  What sets Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academies apart from other early childhood education providers?

DV:  We have been family-owned and operated for over 30 years and rank in the top three nationwide for franchised early childhood education centers. For more than six years, Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academies has been accredited by AdvancED in America, the world’s largest education community.

I’m really excited about one of our latest advancements – the STEAM AHEAD curriculum. Designed for preschool students, it is an integrated, project-based curriculum that incorporates more science, technology, engineering, art, and math into everyday learning through play.

By the year 2020, it is expected that the need for qualified specialists, such as medical scientists, computer system analysts, and biomedical engineers, will grow exponentially. STEAM AHEAD will help meet our nation’s growing need for STEAM-educated professionals.

FC:  The company signed its first international agreement with China last year. Why did the company decide to expand internationally? Are there any other countries you are targeting for expansion?

DV:  There is a growing demand for early childhood education programs here in the States and abroad. With the opening of our first Learning Academy in China, international development remains a strong interest to our company. We are examining other international markets, such as South America, United Arab Emirates, Australia, Colombia, and India.

FC:  What kind of training do you have in place for both franchisees and employees?

DV:  There are four areas of ongoing training and support that are very important to our industry and that Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academies excels in for our franchisees.

Our Quality Assurance Consultants provide state licensing support as well as health and safety regulations.

Education Specialists write and produce our exclusive, award-winning curriculum for each Learning Academy.

Our Marketing and Brand Management Department provides information on how to market each school through social media, digital advertising, and local community events.

Finally, Government Relations is an area we take very seriously as we represent our industry and our franchisees with state and federal lawmakers. We also keep our franchisees abreast of current and potential rules and regulations.

FC:  What are the brand’s expansion plans domestically?

DV:  2016 is going to be a year of great growth for us domestically. We are on track to open new schools in Florida (Tampa and Orlando), New Jersey (Princeton and Montville), and Texas (Fort Worth and Dallas), as well as Buford, Georgia and Carry, Illinois.

We are currently seeking qualified franchisees to open 15 to 20 schools in cities such as Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Denver, Orlando, and Las Vegas; as well as communities in New Jersey, Virginia, and the Capital Region of Maryland.

FC:  How is the overall early childhood education industry doing these days?

DV:  Our industry continues to evolve as more studies and research confirm what today’s students need to set them up for academic success and a lifetime of inspired learning.

I mentioned STEAM before, and it’s not just a buzzword – research has confirmed that hands-on learning activities and projects in science, technology, engineering, art, and math will enrich students’ everyday learning and support academic growth.

We are fortunate to be at the forefront of bringing this type of curriculum to the industry and helping students develop problem solving and critical thinking skills at an early age.

FC:  What is on the horizon for Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academies?

DV:  We have had the same long-standing principle – “Hug First, Then Teach” – for over 30 years now, and providing high quality care and education remain our top priorities. Our franchisees understand that children come first and the revenue will follow.

Our obligation is to find the right franchisee for the right location at the right time. Because of that focus, we have a growing network of franchise owners who are passionate about the brand and are fueling our success. As part of our ongoing commitment, we plan to continue helping them keep their businesses a step ahead of the rest.

Irina Petrova

Exemplary team “Theatre-Studio “Blue Bird”, Podolsk City District

For more than a year, due to the pandemic, our team dreamed of a trip to the festival “I CAN!” in the amazing city of St. Petersburg. After all, many members of the children’s team are here for the first time.
And the expectation did not deceive us! Wonderful excursions – around the city and to Peterhof, excellent hotel and exquisite food.
But, perhaps, the most important thing is the festive atmosphere that reigned on the stage and backstage! Each team strived to show all the best, the most expensive thing they have!
This is not the first time we have taken part in this project. At the beginning of the year, online, the soloist of our theater received the Grand Prix of the festival. And now it’s time to go offline. And the guys did not disappoint. So many prizes in different categories: vocals, ensemble, for the best acting work in the play, the best stage costume design. The final result – the Grand Prix of the festival – the SECOND for the year!!!
I would like to wish the festival a high flight, a bright cloudless sky and inexhaustible creative potential!!!

Alena

Our delegation consisted of 53 people, including 34 children, but everyone was impressed by this trip!!! Thanks for the positive vibes!!!

Children’s international language exams: expectations vs reality

I am sure that for most parents, exam tests and the preschool period of a child’s development are two completely different stories, believing that international English language exams should be taken by those who plan to study or work for abroad. On the other hand, many parents from an early age take their children to additional English classes in language centers, and many generally choose a bilingual direction in kindergarten, where the entire educational process takes place in English.

I propose to find out what international English exams are, what age they are designed for, what dictates their popularity and whether it is worth taking them into account when it comes to tender childhood.

Which exams are we talking about?

Obviously, there are not so many tools of the so-called external audit that would be valid, reliable and recognized throughout the world. More precisely, there are two main exam syndicates that offer children’s international exams for children aged 6-12. Pearson Test of English Young Learners developed by the University of London and the UK’s largest examination chamber EDEXEL. Cambridge English: Young Learners is developed by the University of Cambridge.

What is tested in the exam?

Although slightly different in format, both exams test key language skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking. The exam begins with the Listening part, which takes approximately 20 minutes. Tasks that are listened to twice are dialogues between children or children and parents in familiar and familiar communicative situations for a child of 6-7 years of age. For example, a child may be asked to combine the name of a friend with a gift that he wants to receive for his birthday, from the three proposed pictures, choose the one that reflects the situation described in the dialogue, color the picture according to the instructions he heard. The “Reading” and “Writing” parts are presented in one block. They take about 30 minutes to complete. Here, children can be asked to insert the suggested words into the text, make a word from the suggested letters, answer the True / False questions from the picture. In the “Speaking” part, the child, in various tasks, talks about himself and his family, his favorite color, hobbies and interests, about what he can do. In exam Cambridge English: Young Learners is a personal interview with an examiner lasting 5 minutes, in the Pearson Test of English Young Learners exam it is a board game format with 4-5 participants lasting 15-20 minutes.

Can a child enjoy an exam?

Of course, any examination tests are associated with a stressful situation. However, international exams in English are adapted to the peculiarities of child psychology, so the exam, although it is a serious event, has the most comfortable and relaxed atmosphere.

Exam materials, including riddles, crosswords, puzzles and other tasks of an entertaining nature, are created taking into account the individual characteristics of children of primary schoolchildren and are built on the principle “from simple to complex”. All of this minimizes stress and turns toddlers’ first exam experience into a fun, exciting and memorable adventure.

How to prevent disappointment from failure?

No matter how diligent the preparation for the exam is, it does not give one hundred percent guarantee that the child will not get excited, will not be able to concentrate, will not be confused and will not be able to demonstrate all his language skills and abilities. How to prevent the fact that a possible failure will make a child at the age of 6-7 forever hate English? According to the results of the exam, which are usually known in 1.5-2 months, each child, without exception, is issued a certificate, regardless of the number of points they have scored. In the case of Cambridge English: Young Learners, each skill will be individually assessed on the certificate using the Cambridge Coat of Arms badges. In the case of Pearson Test of English Young Learners children will receive either an Exam Certificate or a Certificate of Attendance.

What does the International Children’s Certificate give to your child?

Cambridge and Pearson certificates do not expire and are valid both in Russia and abroad. They are valued all over the world, are a guarantee of quality and testify to excellent knowledge of the language. The work is checked in the UK, where all tasks are proofread by native speakers. Obviously, a children’s international certificate will not help a child go to university. But the child will receive the first document of an international level, designed to increase his self-esteem of the child, to believe in himself, increase motivation and maintain a true interest in the further study of the English language. In a more distant perspective, this is the formation of the so-called examination immunity. Starting to take exam tests from the age of 6-7, the child will feel much more confident and calm when he needs to pass an important decisive exam.

Why do you need this as a parent?

If your child at the very beginning of the language learning path will focus on passing international exams, then you will never be surprised by the question “Where are you taking your child with this English at 5-6 years old?”. You will be able to provide the child with a gradual assimilation of the material with a gradual complication from stage to stage. If your child’s teacher focuses on passing international exams, then you won’t have the question “Which heights are you leading my child to?”, Because the benchmark for passing the exam gives the teacher a completely specific vector of work and sets a clear goal. The results of the exam will show you and your child how competently and progressively, as well as qualitatively and deeply, the teacher did the work. And these will not be subjective feelings, but an objective assessment in accordance with international standards.

Children’s international exams are a great opportunity to test your knowledge in accordance with international standards, as well as a great motivation for further study and improvement of the English language.
