Why does Turgenev’s novel begin on May 20, 1859? Where did the author borrow Bazarov’s views from? Why are we told about the fatal love of Pavel Petrovich and the ring with the sphinx? Answers to these and other questions are in the new issue of the column about the secrets of great books
Author Alexey Vdovin
1. The mystery of the first phrase of the novel
In the first phrase of Fathers and Sons, Turgenev accurately names the date of the beginning of the novel:
“What, Pyotr, can’t you see yet? – Asked on May 20, 1859, going out without a hat on the low porch of an inn on the *** highway, a gentleman of about forty years old . .. “
Why 20 May 1859? We would never know the exact answer if the draft manuscript of the novel had not been found The history of the study of “Fathers and Sons” is like a detective story. The draft manuscript of the novel was considered lost until in the middle of 19In the 1980s, the English antiquary Lord Parmur did not find it in Paris and did not report this sensational find to Academician D.S. Likhachev. He did everything to redeem the manuscript, which was almost put up for auction at Sotheby’s. Likhachev managed to convince the Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR N. I. Ryzhkov to find 400 thousand pounds sterling, and the unique autograph finally ended up in the Pushkin House in St. Petersburg, where it is still kept .. It turned out that at first Turgenev dated the arrival of Arkady and Bazarov to the Kirsanov estate 25 May. This very day 1859of the year was remembered by Turgenev by his meeting with his old friend Herzen in London after a long break. The friends were most likely discussing the famous article by the London émigré “Very dangerous!!!” directed against the views of Dobrolyubov and Chernyshevsky, two young radical critics of the Sovremennik magazine, and published in Kolokol on June 1.
Herzen’s article “Very dangerous!!!”. 1859 From the publication “The Bell. The first decade 1857-1867, London, Geneva, 1867
On that day, Turgenev appeared at Herzen’s house not alone, but with his younger friend and protégé, Elisey Kolbasin, also an employee of Sovremennik. It can be assumed that the conversation between Herzen, Turgenev and Kolbasin revolved around the conflict that flared up between the “fathers” (Herzen and Turgenev who took his side) and the “children” (Chernyshevsky and Dobrolyubov). Later, polishing the text, Turgenev decided, apparently, to abandon the overly straightforward allusion to the date of publication of Herzen’s article in order to remove possible projections and allusions.
2. The secret of Bazarov’s complexes
The protagonist of the novel Bazarov tells his friend Arkady and readers about his origin:
“- A good duchess,” Arkady objected, “from the first time she invited such strong aristocrats as we are with you. – Especially me, the future doctor, and the doctor’s son, and the deacon’s grandson … You know that I am the deacon’s grandson? ..
“Like Speransky,” Bazarov added after a short silence and twisted his lips.
In the preparatory materials for the novel, Bazarov’s genealogy was designated even more extensively: “the son of a doctor, who himself was the son of a priest.” Why did Turgenev give the hero such a social origin?
This decision is deeply logical: it is typical of the biographies of many doctors of the 19th century. The medical profession was perceived as unworthy of a nobleman. As a rule, children of the clergy (small and medium) became doctors in the 1850s. Graduates of theological seminaries often went to medical faculties for various reasons – some out of a desire to serve the common people, some because of the quota of the government, which specially recruited seminarians to fill empty due to lack of space in medical faculties. Bazarov’s father, Vasily Ivanovich, “was a strong Latinist,” that is, he did well in his time in Latin, apparently thanks to his seminary training, but then he served in the army and became a nobleman.
However, with the origin of Bazarov Sr. and the attitude of his son towards him in the novel, not everything is so simple. The researchers found that in a conversation about himself, Bazarov self-irically uses the aristocratic name “doctor”, looking at himself from the side, while other heroes of the novel call this profession “doctor” (or “doctor”). All this gives reason to suspect Bazarov of a social inferiority complex, which, judging by Turgenev’s hints, makes the hero return to this topic all the time and painfully beat it in conversations with the noblemen Kirsanovs. The integrity of Bazarov’s personality is thus in doubt.
3. Bazarov’s secret
Evgeny Bazarov informs Arkady that he has an angel’s day:
“Congratulate me,” Bazarov suddenly exclaimed, “today is the twenty-second of June, my angel’s day. Let’s see how he cares about me somehow. Today they are waiting for me at home,” he added, lowering his voice… “Well, they’ll wait, what’s the importance!”
However, researchers recently found out that Bazarov’s words do not correspond to reality: June 22 is the memorial day of the Hieromartyr Eusebius of Samosata, and Eugene is celebrated in winter and in March. What is it – a lie of Bazarov or an oversight of the author?
The most plausible explanation for this discrepancy is an accidental mistake by Turgenev, who probably checked the month-word for 1858 and 1859, where the day of Eugene of Samosata was erroneously indicated under the date June 22, and in the alphabetical list of saints at the end near Eusebius was the date June 22 . Another version – that Bazarov was baptized as Eusebius, but pious parents called him Enyusha (Zhenya) – seems unconvincing.
4. The Mystery of the Sphinx
Turgenev tells us the biography of Pavel Petrovich, and in particular talks about his fatal passion for a certain princess R. The lover gave the princess a ring with a sphinx – a symbol of mystery; the princess dies and before her death returns the gift:
“… he received a package addressed to him: it contained the ring he had given to the princess. She drew a cruciform line on the sphinx and told him to say that the cross is the key.
And yet, what is the key to the sphinx? To answer this question, let’s first ask it a little more broadly: why did Turgenev need the plot itself with Pavel Petrovich’s past love?
The fact is that, telling the story of Pavel Petrovich and Bazarov in parallel, pushing the antagonist heroes together, Turgenev hints that they clash not only because they belong to two different generations and two conflicting political camps, but also because in they have a lot in common. They are doubles, their characters are “mirrored” with the help of a whole system of doublet motives: both follow strict life principles, both have love failures that turn into psychological trauma, both cast loving glances at Fenechka, and, finally, both worship a fetish – each to his own.
Pavel Petrovich’s fetish is the ideal of Nelly R. fatal and with a “mysterious look”. He did not get rid of the passion for the dead princess, continuing to look for her image in women, and in an incomprehensible way found it in Fenechka.
Bazarov, studying the anatomy of the eye, does not believe in the “mysterious look”, but worships a different fetish – belief in his usefulness to the Russian peasant, who in fact does not understand him and takes him for a “pea jester”. Although in the novel the word “sphinx” is not put into the mouth of Bazarov, his attitude towards the people is conveyed through another ornate comparison with the mystical characters of Anna Ratcliffe’s gothic novels: “The Russian peasant is the same mysterious stranger that Mrs. Ratcliffe once talked so much about. Who will understand him? He doesn’t understand himself.” In 1862, in a letter to Pavel Annenkov, Turgenev already directly likened the Russian people to the “Sphinx”, and in 1878 he even composed a prose poem “The Sphinx” – exactly about this.
5. The mystery of Bazarov’s worldview
Nihilist Bazarov ponders:
“But I’m thinking: I’m lying here under a haystack… The narrow place that I occupy is so tiny in comparison with the rest of the space where I’m not there and where I don’t care; and the part of the time that I will be able to live is so insignificant before eternity, where I was not and will not be… And in this atom, in this mathematical point, the blood circulates, the brain works, it also wants something… What a disgrace! What nonsense!”
Everyone remembers well the materialistic views of Bazarov: the hero denies romanticism, religion, emphasizes the priority of sensations and reflexes, advises Nikolai Petrovich to read the then fashionable book “Matter and Force”. But what is nihilistic in his thoughts under the hay?!
Blaise Pascal. Engraving by Gerard Edelink. XVII century Bibliothèque nationale de France
Turgenev borrowed the hero’s materialistic views from the articles of Chernyshevsky, Dobrolyubov and partly Belinsky. But researchers have found that his reflections under the haystack have a completely different source: it is the skeptical philosophy of Blaise Pascal (whom the writer admired). Bazarov’s heartfelt monologue goes back to the following passage from Pascal’s “Thoughts”:
“I see these terrifying spaces of the universe that enclose me in themselves, I feel tied to one corner of this vast world, not knowing why I am placed in this and not another place, why the short time that is given to me to live assigned to me precisely at this, and not at another point in the whole eternity that preceded me and that follows me. From all sides I see only infinities that enclose me like an atom… All that I am aware of is only that I must die soon…” Quoted in P. D. Pervov’s translation of 1888.
It turns out that, in describing the views of Bazarov, Turgenev mixed in with the materialism of Chernyshevsky and Dobrolyubov a completely different philosophy from the venerable European tradition. It is obvious that with this and other philosophizing, after the outbreak of passion for Odintsova, Bazarov partly refutes himself – his complete denial of the spiritual and metaphysical side of life.
6. The mystery of Bazarov’s delirium
Bazarov dies, and his dying words are interrupted by delirium:
“Russia needs me… No, apparently not. And who is needed? A shoemaker is needed, a tailor is needed, a butcher … sells meat … a butcher … wait, I’m confused … There is a forest … “
What does the forest have to do with it? It is clear that you can’t say such things in delirium, but this is not real nonsense, but literary nonsense, which means there must be a clue.
And here it is: the forest in Bazarov’s delirium – from his own previous words. In the XVI chapter, in a dispute with Odintsova, the hero eloquently defends, as it seems to him, a scientific, correct view of a person, in which the individual psyche now plays no role:
“. .. It is not worth the trouble to study individuals. All people are similar to each other both in body and soul; each of us has a brain, spleen, heart, and lungs the same way; and the so-called moral qualities are the same for everyone: small modifications mean nothing. One human specimen is enough to judge all others. People are like trees in the forest; no botanist will deal with every single birch.”
Disagreeing with Bazarov, Odintsova thoughtfully repeats the phrase “trees in the forest” after him. The more the hero falls in love with Anna Sergeevna, the more romanticism he discovers in himself and the more angry he becomes with his weakness. It is at these moments that some force draws Bazarov into the same forest: “Then he went into the forest and walked along it with long steps, breaking the branches that came across and scolding both her and himself in an undertone” Chapter XVII ..
Finally, it finally becomes clear that the forest is a symbol and an important motif of the novel, when in a dream, before a duel with Pavel Petrovich, he appears to Bazarov as “a big forest with which he still had to fight” Chapter XXIV . .
The circle closes : the forest, consisting of many trees, turns into a symbol not just of a single person (Odintsova or Pavel Petrovich), who resists the hero, but also of the bottomless human psyche, the subconscious, which Bazarov strives for, but cannot comprehend, because he does not understand, why study them separately. That is why, before his death, Turgenev makes him see the forest again – this symbol of the unknowability of an alien soul. After all, according to the Russian proverb, a foreign soul is a dark forest.
7. The mystery of Bazarov’s death
Bazarov before his death. Illustration by Ivan Arkhipov. 1955 © Ivan Arkhipov / DETGIZ
Bazarov dies of typhoid infection:
“Three days later, Bazarov went into his father’s room and asked if he had a hellish stone?
– There is; what do you need?
– You need to… cauterize the wound.
– To whom?
– To yourself.
– How, yourself! Why is this? What is this wound? Where’s she?
– Right here, on the finger. Today I went to the village, you know, where the typhoid peasant was brought from. For some reason they were going to open it, but I haven’t practiced this for a long time.
– Well?
– Well, so I asked the county doctor; well, he cut himself.”
Why does Bazarov die like this? This memorable detail opens the way to answering one of the main questions for Turgenevologists – who exactly was the prototype of Bazarov. There are several answers to this question, and many of the prototypes are related to healing and fighting epidemics.
After the novel was published in 1862, Turgenev mentioned one of the prototypes – a provincial doctor Dmitriev, an accidental fellow traveler who told the writer in the Petersburg-Moscow train car about some new means of combating anthrax. Very soon, Turgenev learned that Dmitriev had died, which, obviously, influenced the formation of the finale of the novel with the death of the hero.
Disputes about other prototypes of the protagonist did not subside for more than a hundred years, until in 1984 Patrick Waddington published Turgenev’s notebook with preparatory materials for the novel, kept in a private Parisian archive. It turned out that when conceived of the main character in the summer of 1860, Turgenev kept in mind “a mixture of Dobrolyubov, Pavlov and Preobrazhensky.” If contemporaries immediately discerned the features of the famous critic Nikolai Dobrolyubov and broke many copies on this score, reproaching the writer for malicious irony in relation to the author of the article “The Dark Kingdom”, who died in 1861, then no one guessed about the other persons mentioned. Ivan Vasilyevich Pavlov, a doctor, writer, acquaintance and neighbor of Turgenev in Spassky-Lutovinov, was sharp-tongued and famous for his harsh judgments about literature, which was useful to the writer. Finally, Vasily Grigoryevich Preobrazhensky, a young zemstvo doctor and the son of the writer’s brother managing the estates, could be remembered by Turgenev for his selfless fight against cholera, which broke out in the neighboring Spassky district in 1855 and terrified the writer.
Finally, the surname Bazarov itself was well known in the late 1850s – in Tula, Ioann Grigoryevich Bazarov was a professor at the Theological Academy, and his son, Ioann Ioannovich, from 1844 was a priest of the Russian Church in Frankfurt am Main and the confessor of his daughter one of the great princes. In 1869, Turgenev met him personally in Stuttgart.

Peasant children – Nekrasov.
Full text of the poem – Peasant children
Again I am in the village. I go hunting,
I write my verses – life is easy.
Yesterday, tired of walking in the swamp,
I wandered into the barn and fell deeply asleep.
Woke up: in the wide cracks of the barn
Rays of cheerful sun look.
A dove is cooing; flying over the roof,
Young rooks cry;
Some other bird is also flying –
I recognized the crow just by the shadow;
Chu! some whisper… and here is a string
Along the slit of attentive eyes!
All gray, brown, blue eyes –
Mixed like flowers in a field.
They have so much peace, freedom and affection,
They have so much holy kindness!
I love the expression of a child’s eye,
I always recognize it.
I froze: tenderness touched my soul…
Chu! whisper again!
First time
Beard!
Second
A gentleman, they said!
Second
A bar does not have a beard – a mustache.
First
And the legs are long, like poles.
Black and white
Look, there’s a watch on the hat!
F
Oh, important thing!
Sixth
And a golden chain…
Seventh
Is tea expensive?
Wow
How the sun burns!
Baby
And there is a big, big dog!
Water is running from the tongue.
F
Shotgun! just look: double barrel,
Carved clasps…
Treat
_ (with fright)
Looks!
Black
Be quiet, nothing! Let’s stand still, Grisha!
Third party
It will kill…
My spies were frightened
And they rushed away: they heard a man,
So sparrows fly in a flock from the chaff.
I calmed down, squinted – they appeared again,
Little eyes flicker through the cracks.
What happened to me – they marveled at everything
And they pronounced my sentence:
– What a goose like that!
I would lie on my stove!
And apparently not a gentleman: how he was driving from the swamp,
So next to Gavrila . .. – “Hear, be silent!”
O dear rascals! Who often saw them,
He, I believe, loves peasant children;
But even if you hated them,
Reader, as “a low kind of people”, –
I still must confess openly,
That I often envy them:
So much poetry has been merged in their life,
How, God forbid, spoiled children yours.
Happy people! Neither science, nor bliss
They do not know in childhood.
I made mushroom raids with them:
I dug up the leaves, ransacked the stumps,0048 And in the morning I couldn’t find anything.
“Look, Savosya, what a ring!”
We both bent down, and at the same time grab
the Snake! I jumped: it hurt!
Savosya laughs: “Caught for nothing!”
But then we ruined them pretty much
And put them in a row on the railing of the bridge.
We must have been waiting for the feats of glory.
We had a big road:
People of working rank scurried
Along it without a number.
Vologda ditch digger,
Tinker, tailor, wool beater,
And then a citizen of the city
On the eve of the holiday, he rolls to pray.
Under our thick ancient elms
Tired people were drawn to rest.
The guys will surround: stories will begin
About Kyiv, about a Turk, about wonderful animals.
Another will play, so just hold on –
He will start from Volochka, it will reach Kazan “
Mimic Chukhna, Mordovians, Cheremis,
And amuse with a fairy tale, and twist a parable:
“Farewell, guys!
We had Vavilo, he lived richer than everyone else,
Yes, I once thought of murmuring at God, –
Since then, Vavilo has become shabby, ruined,
There is no honey from bees, harvest from the earth,
And only in one thing he was happy,
That the hair from his nose grew rapidly … “
The worker will arrange, lay out shells –
Planers, files, chisels, knives:
“Look, little devils!” And the children are happy,
How you saw, how you tinker – show them everything.
A passer-by will fall asleep to his jokes,
The guys get down to business – sawing and planing!
The saw will go out – you can’t sharpen it even in a day!
They break the drill and run away in fright.
It happened that whole days flew by here, –
Like a new passerby, then a new story …
Wow, it’s hot! .. Until noon, mushrooms were picked.
Here they came out of the forest – towards exactly
A blue ribbon, winding, long,
Meadow river; jumped off in a crowd,
And fair-haired heads over the desert river
What porcini mushrooms in a forest clearing!
The river resounded with both laughter and a howl:
Here a fight is not a fight, a game is not a game…
And the sun is scorching them with midday heat.
– Home, kids! it’s time to have dinner.—
We’ve returned. Everyone has a basket full,
And how many stories! Caught with a scythe,
Caught a hedgehog, got a little lost
And saw a wolf … oh, what a terrible one!
They offer flies and goats to the hedgehog,
Roots gave him his own milk –
He doesn’t drink! retreated…
Who catches leeches
On the lava, where the uterus beats the linen,
Who nurses his sister, two-year-old Glashka,
Who drags kvass on the reaping bucket,
And he, having tied his shirt under his throat,
Something mysteriously draws in the sand;
That one got into a puddle, and this one with a new one:
She wove herself a glorious wreath,
Everything is white, yellow, pale lilac
Yes, occasionally a red flower.
Those are sleeping in the sun, those are squatting.
Here is a girl catching a horse with a basket –
She caught it, jumped up and rides on it.
And is she, born under the heat of the sun
And brought home in an apron from the field,
To be afraid of her humble horse?
Mushroom time did not have time to depart,
Look – everyone’s lips are already black,
They filled the mouth: the blueberries are ripe!
And there are raspberries, lingonberries, walnuts!
A childish cry, repeated by an echo,
From morning until night, rumbles through the forests.
Frightened by singing, hooting, laughter,
Will the grouse take off, croaking to the chicks,
Will the hare jump up – sodom, turmoil!
Here is an old capercaillie with a slick wing
He was brought into the bush … well, the poor thing is bad!
They drag the living one to the village with triumph…
— Enough, Vanyusha! you walked a lot,
It’s time for work, dear! –
But even labor will turn first
To Vanyusha its smart side:
He sees how his father fertilizes the field,
How he throws grain into the loose earth,
How the field then begins to turn green,
How the ear grows, pours grain;
The finished harvest will be cut with sickles,
They will be tied up in sheaves, they will be brought to the barn,
They will dry it, beat it with flails,
They will grind it in the mill and bake bread.
A child will taste fresh bread
And in the field he more willingly runs after his father.
Will they wind up the senets: “Climb, little shooter!”
Vanyusha enters the village as a tsar…
However, envy in a noble child
It would be a pity for us to sow.
So, by the way, we are obliged to wrap
The other side of the medal.
Suppose a peasant child is free
Grows up without learning anything,
But he will grow up, if God pleases,
And nothing prevents him from bending.
Suppose he knows forest paths,
Prancing on horseback, not afraid of water,
But midges mercilessly eat him,
On the other hand, he is familiar with the works early…
Once, in the cold winter season,
I came out of the forest; there was severe frost.
I look, it slowly rises uphill
A horse carrying a cart of brushwood.
And, marching solemnly, in orderly calmness,
A little man is leading the horse by the bridle
In large boots, in a sheepskin coat,
In large mittens . .. and he himself with a fingernail!
– Hello, boy! – “Go past yourself!”
– You are too formidable, as I see it!
Where are the firewood from? – “From the forest, of course;
Father, you hear, he cuts, and I take him away.
(A woodcutter’s ax resounded in the forest.)
— Does your father have a big family?
“It’s a big family, but two people
A total of muzhiks: my father and me…”
— So there it is! And what is your name? – Vlas.
– Are you a year old? – “The sixth passed …
Well, dead!” the little one shouted in a bass voice,
rushed by the bridle and walked faster.
The sun shone so brightly on this picture,
The child was so hilariously small,
It was as if everything was made of cardboard,
As if I were in a children’s theater!
But the boy was a living, real boy,
And firewood, and brushwood, and a piebald horse,
And snow, lying to the windows of the village,
And cold fire of the winter sun –
Everything, everything was real Russian,
With the stigma of unsociable, deadly winters,
What is so painfully sweet to the Russian soul,
What instills Russian thoughts in the minds,
Those honest thoughts that have no will,
For which there is no death – press do not press,
In which there is so much malice and pain,
In which there is so much love!
Play now, children! Grow at will!
That’s why you’ve been given a red childhood,
To love this meager field forever,
So that it always seems sweet to you.
Keep your age-old heritage,
Love your working bread –
And let the charm of childhood poetry
Guide you into the depths of your native land! ..
Now it’s time for us to return to the beginning.
Noticing that the guys have become bolder, —
“Hey, thieves are coming! I called out to Fingal:
Steal, steal! Well, hide quickly!
Fingalushka made a serious face,
He buried my belongings under the hay,
He hid the game with special diligence,
He lay down at my feet and growled angrily.
An extensive field of canine science
He was perfectly familiar;
He started throwing out such things,
That the audience could not leave the place.
They wonder, they laugh! There is no time for fear!
Command themselves! – “Fingalka, die!”
– Don’t get stuck, Sergey! Don’t push, Kuzyakha, –
“Look – dying – look!”
I myself enjoyed, lying on the hay,
Their noisy fun. Suddenly it became dark
In the shed: it gets dark so quickly on the stage,
When the storm is destined to break out.
And exactly: a blow thundered over the barn,
A rain river poured into the barn,
The actor burst into a deafening bark,
And the audience gave an arrow!
The wide door unlocked, creaked,
Hit the wall, locked again.
I looked out: a dark cloud hung
Just above our theater.
In heavy rain the children fled
Barefoot to their village…
Faithful Fingal and I waited out the storm
And went out to look for great snipes.
