Our care program focuses a lot on emotional intelligence and development. There is a lot of emphasis on being a part of a community, and having a shared space (the class room) that everyone owns, and has to take care of.

TIPS
PACKING A BUTTERFLY PACK
Weather-appropriate clothing and seal-able bags:
A:No matter what the age, every little one should come prepared with spare clothes, seasonal wear, bibs, under wear and burp cloths. Accidents and spit-ups happen, so don’t leave your precious cargo without backup. Be uber-prepared by including plastic bags with a seal for those soiled clothes, especially during potty training. For babies, this includes swaddling blankets. Older little ones will need sunblock, swimsuits if your facility offers water play and jackets for colder weather. “I always include an extra layer like a hoodie or sweater, healthy snacks and a blanket from home for his nap,” said Maria.
Diapers:
A:If your kids are still in diapers, be sure you send enough diapers, wipes and diaper rash cream to cover a change every two hours. You may be able to leave a full week’s worth in the classroom, but always arm your kids’ backpacks with emergency coverage.
Food and nutrition:
A:What to bring depends on the age and needs of each child. Pack enough formula, breastmilk and/or baby food, plus a little extra just in case, to get your baby through the day. Include sippy cups and baby/finger foods for older little ones.
Comfort items and medicine:
A:Whether it’s medicine for teething, allergies or pain/fever, be sure your childcare provider has it and knows how to use it. Pack that blankie, pacifier, teether and/or stuffed animal with the typically required crib sheet and blanket for nap time to ensure your little one isn’t stressed when it’s time to wind down.
What not to pack:
Toys: It’s too hard to keep track of who brought what toys brought from home, and many kids at this age don’t know how to share…Let’s eliminate tears, it’s better to leave these at home. If children need their loveys to sleep with, these items can stay in backpacks until nap time. We never allow play guns, water guns included.
Junk food behind: The other kids get really upset when they see a kid with a cupcake, cookie, etc. and cannot have one for themselves. Either try to bring these special snacks for everyone or send in healthy snacks so others don’t get upset.
Fancy clothes: Leave plastic and dress up shoes at home. Please let kids wear shoes they can run and play in. Save dressy clothes for church as kids in daycare can get really messy.
Medication: Though not a leave-at-home item, it’s important that no medications or vitamins are left in lunch bags or backpacks. Other kids may get a hold of them. Please label all medications and give directly to the teacher with proper documentation completed and they will be stored and administered appropriately.
Sharp objects: Parents know kids shouldn’t bring sharp objects to daycare, but sometimes children still slip them into their bags. Talk to your kids about the dangers of sharp objects such as scissors and craft-kit tools. Little Butterflies Learning Center does a great job with our safety and security policies.

Description
In the private kindergarten Be-be-bears (rating – 3. 7) they are happy to meet children with their parents! This is a pleasant and warm space where, in a group with a comfortable number of people, a team of educators and teachers organizes life for the benefit and fun of little wards. This environment allows you to work with them more intensively and offer more interesting games. There is an opportunity to realize additional wishes of moms and dads. And besides, it is much faster to enroll your child in a private kindergarten.
Mothers of children from one to three years old may need to return to work. Or you want to pursue your own interests. For these reasons, nursery groups are created. There, the child gets the experience of communicating with the same children, develops in the game process and learns the world around him, and adults can easily do much of what they have planned.
The company is located at Republic of Buryatia, 50th Anniversary of October Avenue, 21B. You can ask questions of interest by calling 79148454643. The doors of the organization are open Mon-Fri: 07:30 – 18:30.

There are a lot of vacancies in the Netherlands. However, almost all of them require knowledge of the Dutch language. It costs very little to study, and besides, you can complete courses at the expense of the employer.
Well, friends! Today it’s time to talk about one of the important topics – work and the Dutch language.
Upon arrival, I first of all tried to find a job in my profession, every day I sent a lot of CVs, but, unfortunately, there were not so many responses. Those who answered said, “Yes, you have a great resume, but you don’t speak Dutch.” I underestimated this problem, this is my shortcoming, so it is not yet possible to work in the profession. But I signed up for the Dutch language courses, I’m going to them from next week. What would you understand, the Dutch language is a mixture of English and German and a lot of letters “x”. It looks like you’re spitting.
Here the state encourages the study of the Dutch language. A few years ago it was even free, now I found courses that cost 30 euros for half a year. The company helps you with Dutch, sends you to courses and pays for you. But there is one condition – you must attend these courses. If you miss these courses, then you will have to compensate for their cost. The labor market here is very large, there are quite a lot of vacancies. I have seen hundreds of thousands of vacancies on websites, but if you do not know Dutch, then you do not fit into 80% of the market.
Everyone here works like bees. If at home, in Moldova, within an hour you can have time to smoke five times, spend half an hour on social networks. Here, unfortunately, this is not possible. You will not even have time to smoke, chat on the phone, only during the breaks allotted for this.
The Dutch have built a very cool system. Even if you are the owner of a business, then your child is not immediately appointed vice president, but is sent on an independent labor path from the very bottom. If you are a restaurant owner, then your son can be a waiter, dishwasher.
What is going on with me now? A month later, after I landed here, I found my first job. What path should each person take to find a job. There are several options. The first is to register with employment agencies. There are a lot of them here, and this is a fairly popular practice. This job is paid hourly. At the moment, it turns out like this: I work two days a week, Natasha works 3-4 days. This allows us to close to zero with the cost of a family here in Holland. Our costs are about 1900-2000 euros per month. Now the holidays will pass, February 14, March 8, and we hope to catch somewhere for a full contract for five days a week. Then all financial issues are removed. It will be possible to live normally and still save money. To do this, you need to find like-minded people who are also looking for work, exchange information, maybe someone can help with something.
And finally, a useful fact. Now everyone will go to open Google and look at the Mona Lisa. Note that the Mona Lisa does not have eyebrows. During the Renaissance in Florence, all fashionistas shaved off their eyebrows.
Good luck everyone! Keep in touch. If you still have questions about the work, then leave questions in the comments, I will answer everyone. Have a good day! Bye bye!

Welcome to April 2021. I am without the right to work in Europe, with my D visa ending, I started to act super actively.
Facebook, my post in a group of Russian-speaking expats.
I think that at least half of my acquaintances would like to move to Europe (anywhere), get a job and live happily ever after. And if I have the opportunity to make your life a little easier, I will gladly do it.
At the same time, I also understand how not easy, and sometimes even impossible, to sign a long-awaited offer. But if you approach this issue strategically and roll up your sleeves, then you have every chance to hold a European ID card with work rights in half a year.
So, I will only share my experience, which may differ from all others. Please do not think that this is the ultimate truth, and if you have something to add after reading the article (it’s hard to call it a full-fledged article, rather a post with usefulness and recommendations), be sure to leave your comment.
I will divide this article into several parts. Because the topic of finding and getting a job in Europe is limitless and contains many pitfalls. Specifically, in this part of the publication, we will talk about resources that will help us find our dream job.
Foreword (very short and concise)
It took me 6 months to find a job in the Netherlands.
6 months! ( when in Russia with my experience I found a job in 2 weeks, with a salary many times higher than the average in Moscow ).
End of preface
Why so long, you ask? I will answer the question in the next part, and what helped me figure out my job search strategy – I will tell right now.
The first and most necessary thing that will definitely help you get a job is job search services. Unfortunately or fortunately, they are now a dime a dozen, for every taste and color and wage level. I will give an example of the top 5 services that, in my opinion, are really useful and simplify this thorny path as much as possible.
1. LinkedIn
P.S. Just don’t say that it is blocked in Russia, in order for it to work, just install a VPN and use it to your health.
Spoiler – I found a job through this platform.
What is LinkedIn? is a social network for business communication, search for employees and open vacancies. So this is where you need to go in the first place to start your search.
LinkedIn Pros:
+ International companies that place promising positions. For example, Head of PR (Russian Speaker) at Netflix. Well, no beauty, for an experienced professional from Russia?
+ Once you can upload your resume and automatically apply for the positions you are interested in, without filling out 100500 questions on separate forms (yes, yes, my laziness plays a big role here).
+ If you carefully study the post with the vacancy, you can find the contacts of HR, a recruiter or even a CEO (mostly international startups).
+ If we have already touched on startups and you would like to try your hand at international startups, then Linkedin is the best resource for this. Lots of opportunities and open positions, all on the same platform.
+ Possibility to use search filters. Will significantly reduce your time. As for me, I have not yet found more convenient filter settings for searching for vacancies (with the exception of HH, but that’s another story).
+ Your profile is everything. Often, recruiters will immediately look at your LinkedIn profile, which can tell them about you as a candidate. Therefore, all your requested recommendations, portfolio is important and should be displayed on your page. Remember that business cards are the last century. A LinkedIn profile is becoming a professional alternative for businesses.
+ If you set up your profile correctly, international recruiters will write to you and invite you for an initial interview. The main thing is not to forget to put down tags, set up headings, indicate that you are now looking for a job, write in which areas you are competent. Remember, praise yourself is necessary and important!
+ You can see how many more candidates applied for the position and calculate the competition.
LinkedIn Cons:
International companies often post vacancies there last. That is, at the time when you responded to the vacancy, they have already closed this position.
Your profile can play tricks on you. For example, if during registration you indicated the postal code of your hometown (42600 – zip code Izhevsk), then the algorithm is unlikely to give out your profile to recruiters if a vacancy is open in Amsterdam. That is, they will simply pass by your candidacy. Or another example, in the profile I indicated the city in which I lived at the time of the job search (Lunteren), this is a very small village, with a population of no more than 12,000 people. At that time, I applied for all vacancies in a company that was located in Amsterdam. And the algorithm did not automatically display my application and it passed by the eyes of recruiters (only if there was a requirement that the candidate must be in Amsterdam).
2. Indeed
American giant for free worldwide job search. It is considered number 1 in the world in terms of the number of unique visitors per month. +10 new vacancies are published in one second. Contains over 175 million resumes.
From my experience with this service, I would rate it 5 out of 10. Here’s why.
Indeed Pros:
+ Very simple resume submission form. No need to reinvent the wheel. Fill out your resume and CV once, and then, at the click of a button, send it to companies where you would like to work. (Don’t forget that Indeed is also an algorithm that may not let your resume pass if you don’t meet the criteria.)
+ There is a personal account where you can receive letters directly from recruiters, it seems to me super convenient when, like in Linkedin, you can receive a message either to your mail, or on the social network itself, or in general, immediately call.
+ There is a mailing of suitable vacancies. At the same time, now this mailing can be set up on your messenger (for example, WhatsApp), which is very convenient. You can get up-to-date vacancies at any time and immediately apply for a position.
+ There is a GPS function. I have never used it, but my friends say that it is very convenient. That is, you can customize your location and receive job offers, in accordance with your location. (for me it was not relevant, but maybe it’s a useful feature for you)
+ You can read reviews about the company from other employees. For a long time I thought, should this be attributed to pluses or minuses? Since I am sure that most of the reviews are written by the recruiters themselves. But I am sure that in the sea of laudatory messages, you can find constructive and useful recommendations.
Cons Indeed:
In my opinion, 90% of vacancies on this platform are local companies (ala, Accountant at Romashka LLC). Therefore, if you are not fluent in Dutch, the opportunities found on Indeed are unlikely to suit you. In most cases, local companies require local ones, as they do not have certificates to relocate people from other countries.
Almost impossible to find contacts for recruiters and HR. That network from the word at all. In addition, most of the vacancies are posted by recruiting companies. I have nothing against them, but this means that you will not have direct contact with the employer for a very long time.
Interface. But here, as they say, there are no comrades for the taste and color. To be honest, I didn’t fall in love with the Indeed interface.
3.Glassdoor
The Glassdoor service helps you find a job, see the level of salaries within the company, and also gives you the opportunity to anonymously talk about the working conditions of the company and evaluate it and the management.
If there is one person that all job seekers should pray for, it is the founder of this amazing job search.
Let’s go in order.
Glassdoor Pros:
+ It’s not just a Job Search platform, it’s a kind of transparent career community in the world that is changing the way people search for jobs, and companies are hiring the most talented people.
+ On the platform you can find information on salary. You can compare the salaries of similar positions in different companies. You can look at how much people earn on average at a certain company in the salary reports that are freely available. This is important in particular for those who are looking for work in the Netherlands. Because, in an interview, you will definitely be asked about your salary expectations, and here it is important not to sell too cheap and not go too far with your inflated Wishlist. Therefore, you must clearly understand the level of salary in the country for these positions.
+ You can also find interview questions there. And prepare in advance for the interview with the employer. For example, when I had an interview on GitHub, I took questions that were posted on the company’s page on Glassdoor.
+ You can save the vacancies that you like in your personal account in advance and apply for them at a convenient time for you. This is definitely not the case on other platforms.
+ Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many international companies, huge number eager to put together an international team
Cons of Glassdoor:
It takes a little time to figure out the interface, but trust me, it’s worth it.
Not a very large selection of filters, as in Linkedin, as a result of which not quite suitable vacancies may come across.
4. Monster
Monster pros:
+ Pleasant, convenient, beautiful, intuitive interface. I noted this plus only for this platform, because it is really cool.
Unfortunately, I don’t have any more pluses on my part. If you have something to add, please write in the comments.
Monster cons:
– There is no access to the contacts of the right people on the platform. Therefore, it remains only to sit and wait for recruiters to contact you.
– There are often technical problems when uploading resumes. There are no questions about the interface, it is super simple, pleasant and convenient. But I would classify uploading a resume as a task that ASAP needs to solve.
5. Relocate.me
Relocate is a marketplace with jobs from international IT companies and useful content about moving. The main concept of the site is that the employer must provide at least a basic relocation package when moving.
Pros of Relocate.me :
+ Platform audience – strictly only those candidates who plan to relocate to another country. Therefore, all companies on the platform can definitely provide you with a complete relocation package.
+ There is a telegram channel that I recommend subscribing to in order to instantly receive all the latest vacancies.
+ There is a Learning Center that will help you set up a LinkedIn profile, write a CV and prepare a resume, prepare a strategy for finding a job, and so on.
+ There is a salary calculator after taxes. For each vacancy, you will find a specific list of what is included in the relocation package.
+ For each vacancy you will find a specific list of what is included in the relocation package.
Cons of Relocate.me:
– Most of the vacancies are for IT people. Of course, you can find something for project managers, product specialists, analysts, designers – but basically the area in which you should have IT experience.
– Not many vacancies and locations compared to other platforms.
– It is not possible to upload a resume once and use it to apply for a position. Each time you need to fill out separate forms for each company.
I also want to mention a few other job search services that I have not used directly, but have heard good reviews from friends.
Stack Overflow Jobs – you can immediately mark Visa Sponsorship, Relocation Offer in the filter.
Landing Jobs – the same story, there is an opportunity in the filters to find vacancies that offer relocation. Of the minuses – only IT people will be able to find a match and not so many countries are offered (mainly Portugal and Germany). But the interface is awesome.
TechMeAbroad – from the pluses, I would cancel the fact that there are direct contacts of employers and vacancies are presented only for foreigners. Of the minuses – the interface of the 90s, a lot of recruiting agencies and local companies.
Startup Job – only startups are represented (by the way, Airbnb and Spotify are still considered startups). Positions are mainly aimed at specialists with experience of 3-4 years in the market. There is a huge list of useful job search tags.
Supplement : I want to add one site that I really liked, maybe you will find usefulness in it.
Talents – the essence is that you can create an anonymous resume, and companies will send you offers (with salary indication). Without giving your name and other identifying data, you can get an offer solely due to your knowledge and skills.
Another tool for finding work abroad is social networks and groups with expats.
FaceBook has a huge number of local groups, chats, forums, pages for foreigners. For example, there is a group: Holland Work Network Helping Ours!
This group contains only Russian-speaking guys who can help with the search, the only thing worth remembering is that you are unlikely to find a recruiter from Google who will offer you a job and sign a contract with you. I’m sure there are similar groups in other countries.
Summary:
Resources for finding a job in the Netherlands are plentiful. The main thing is to find the desire and time to deal with them.
The most (in my opinion) effective tool of LinkedIn and Relocate.me (if you are an IT person). After 6 months of searching, I found my work on LinkedIn.
All of the above tools – services can be used in combination, for example, Glassdoor to prepare for an interview, Indeed to search for a job in local companies if you speak Dutch, Linkedin to search for a dream job (for example, on Google, Facebook, Booking.com, etc.) .
It is worth being patient and accepting the fact that the job search can take at least 4 months, maximum 1-2 years.
Use a high conversion strategy. The more you apply to different companies for different positions, the more likely you are to get a long-awaited offer.
Well, in conclusion, I can say that almost all services have the same vacancies. The only question is how many times you applied and where your resumes hang.

New York Central Park History Queens; is not the oldest park in the US, created many decades after the parks in Boston and Philadelphia; and even, according to his own architects, is not the most beautiful park in New York, yielding to Prospect Park in Brooklyn. However, without exaggeration, Central Park is the most famous and significant city park in the United States.
The park is located on Manhattan Island between 59th and 110th Streets and Fifth and Eighth Avenues and thus has a rectangular shape. The length of the park is 4 kilometers, the width is 800 meters, the total area is 3.4 km2. With an estimated 25 million visitors a year, the park is the most visited park in the US and has been featured in many films and television shows and has made the park one of the most famous in the world.
The park is maintained by the Central Park Conservancy, a private, non-profit organization that manages the park under contract to the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation.
The park is entirely man-made, although it looks natural. The park contains several natural looking lakes and reservoirs that have been artificially created, extensive walking trails, two ice skating rinks (one of which is a pool in July and August), Central Park Zoo, Central Park Gardens, a wildlife sanctuary, a large area natural forests, Teatro Delacorte, which hosts summer festivals. Landmarks of Central Park are: Belvedere Castle, the Swedish Cottage Puppet Theatre, and the historic Carousel. In addition, there are seven main lawns and many playgrounds for children. Let’s find out how it was created…
Between 1820 and 1850, New York’s population quadrupled, and already at that time, having become the largest financial and industrial center of the country, the urban population needed public places of recreation. The city limits were limited at that time to modern 39th Street and in the mid-fifties of the nineteenth century, the authorities allocated a huge tract of wetland that lay outside the city limits and was inhabited mainly by farmers. By the way, Harlem, which borders the park in the north, was then a separate city and had a completely indirect relationship with New York.
In 1857, a competition was held, which was won by two architects – an American *Frederick Olmsted* and an Englishman *Calvert Vaux*, who received education and practice in Europe (there was not a single school specializing in landscape and park design in the USA at that time ).
Their project was based on the idea of creating an English-style park with lots of winding paths, gardens, hills and ponds. This differed, for example, from the classical French style with a spacious central promenade, an abundance of fountains and flower beds, which was more suitable for a park at the palace. However, behind this project there was something more that the authors tried to express by creating this park.
As already mentioned, by the middle of the 19th century, New York became a major world center with a strong middle and upper classes and no less numerous poor people and workers. Other world capitals, such as London and Paris, had parks where all citizens, without exception, could spend their leisure time. Unlike New York. At that time, only a limited circle of people had access to the few parks and gardens of the city – wealthy citizens, members of clubs, business owners. This social injustice worried both the architects and the city government, which in the end allocated money for the construction of the park.
As conceived by the architects, Central Park should become the embodiment of democratic principles and freedoms*, for which the country has fought for many years. Social equality – this was the motto and the main idea when designing the park. This, in particular, is expressed in the joint parallel (rather than separate) passage of pedestrian roads, occupied mainly by the poor, and roads for horse-drawn carriages of wealthy citizens. *Central Mall* – the only direct alley leading to the heart of the park *Bethesda terrace*, a wide pedestrian area with benches and places for street performances – was also supposed to be a place for people of different classes to mix.
If you pay attention to the entrances to the park, each of them has been given a separate name. The architects had the choice to name the entrance groups after great people, military battles, states, but they opted for the professions of ordinary people, thus paying tribute to the people who participated in the construction of the park. So, in the park there are gates of Scientists, Artists, Craftsmen, Merchants, Farmers, Hunters, Miners, Foresters, Engineers, Inventors, Military, etc.
But the park is not only a work of landscape design. This is also a breakthrough in modern engineering, which should have been embodied here. First of all, these are four roads, which initially, according to the project, crossed the park from east to west, but below the main level of the park, i.e. without creating not only interference with vacationers, but also without giving out its presence at all, blocked by an abundance of bushes. The system of tunnels and bridges, designed in the middle of the 19th century, is still working almost unchanged.
Another engineering marvel that was first applied at that time in New York and implemented in Bethesda terrace is the separation of pedestrian and vehicle flows at different levels. The city at that time was full of various vehicles – first of all, horse-drawn carriages, and there were no underground or overhead passages and traffic lights then. The first structure appeared in the central park, which helped to separate the human and traffic flows.
The park was also included in the system of the newly built city water supply system, which for the first time in the history of the city provides uninterrupted supply of drinking water. The purest water from the Croton River entered the city through tunnels and aqueducts from a distance of more than 100 kilometers. For an overpopulated city suffering from infectious diseases due to insufficient sewerage and sanitation, this was a real salvation. Despite the fact that the fountain with drinking water was publicly available. Krotonskiy akveduk 500×215 Central Park. Creation history
After the announcement of the winners of the competition in 1857, its direct construction began, which continued until 1873. During this time, more than 14 thousand cubic meters of fertile land were brought to the territory of the park measuring 2.5 by 0.5 miles (4 by 0.8 kilometers), more than 4 million plants of 1400 species were planted, alleys, gardens, an artificial rectangular reservoir were organized ( which was subsequently dried up and is now in its place *Great Lawn*), playgrounds, a carousel, a boat station, 2 ice skating grounds and more. For the first time since the formation of the United States, all this was available to absolutely all residents of the city.
Initially, there was only one statue in the park – this is *Angel of the waters*. However, gradually the peoples who inhabited the city at that time began to give the park statues of the most prominent representatives of the art of their countries. So the statues of Beethoven, Scott, Shakespeare and others appeared in the park. And it also became a manifestation of democratic signs on the one hand and showed the national diversity of New York on the other. At the same time, the park was replenished with statues of national heroes of the civil war.Statui v TSentralnom parke 500×337 Central Park.
Between 1860 and 1873 the construction of the park dragged on and most of the basic ideas had to be revised. At this time, more than 14,000 m3 of fertile land was imported from New Jersey, as the local land was not suitable for many of the trees, shrubs, and other plants envisaged by the original plan. When the park was officially completed in 1873, over 10 million cartloads of material, including earth and stone, were dug up and removed from the site. Also included were over 4 million trees, shrubs and other plants representing some 1,500 species.
Some time after opening, the park began to fall into disrepair. One of the main reasons for this was the infamous political machine known as Tammany Hall, at that time the biggest political force in New York. And it was also connected both with the advent of the car as a new means of transportation, and with the death of one of the creators of the Vox park in 1895, who until the end of his life followed his condition. The city stopped allocating money to maintain the park, there was no one to replace old trees, bushes, look after lawns and playgrounds, the police stopped patrolling the territory, and over time, the crime rate in the park increased.
The situation changed when Fiorello La Guardia became mayor in 1934 and appointed *Robert Moses* to the post of park manager. Under Moses, the park gained a new life, while slightly changing the concept. Since the mid-1930s, the park has become not just a place for walking, but also a place for active recreation for citizens. * Sports grounds * (for playing baseball, handball, football), basketball and tennis courts are being built, the Croton reservoir is being drained (the same one that was on the site of the modern Great Lawn).
In the 60s, after the departure of Moses, the park again lost the attention of the authorities and the corresponding funding. At this time, the park is used primarily as a place for meetings, concerts, demonstrations, folk festivals. Due to lack of funding, the police patrol the park less and less, graffiti appears, there is no one to clean up the garbage, crime, prostitution, and drug trafficking are growing again. All this reaches its peak in the 70s…
By 1975, several advocacy groups joined forces to come up with new ideas on how to improve the park. As a result, at 1980 and formed the Committee for the Protection of Nature.
When the Committee began its work, the founders decided not to create a new organization with specially hired workers, which would lead to high costs. Instead, they decided to focus on recruiting volunteers for most of the work, as this would help encourage city residents to take better care of the park, as well as create the impression that the park is one of the integral parts of New York.
The Committee began to interact with the Commissioner of the Park, and committed to the restoration and improvement of the park, publishing in 1981 a document entitled “Reconstruction of Central Park for the 80s and beyond.” The document was presented as a master plan for the further development of the park and described the actions to be taken to return the park to its former glory.
The document included three key tasks necessary for future survival. The architectural heritage had to be restored – not only the landscape and the environment, but also bridges, buildings and other structures that had fallen victim to neglect in 20 years. In addition, the document called for a significant replanting of all grass and constant care for each section of the park, as well as the creation of programs to improve safety in the park, especially at night, and thereby attract new visitors.
During the work of the organization, the park was almost completely restored to proper condition. The work of sports and children’s playgrounds has been organized again, new trees, flowers, lawns have been planted, bridges and structures have been restored, and police supervision has been established. The main idea was to attract volunteers who were ready to work for the benefit of the park for some time free of charge. Today, the organization provides over 80 percent of the park’s $40 million budget and manages about 80 percent of the staff.
Over the years, many buildings have been restored and many hours have been spent restoring the park. In 2004 alone, volunteers spent more than 32,000 hours, including restoring the Heckscher playground, several lawns and stone rises.
Today, Central Park is one of the most visited places in New York, with over 25 million visitors a year. It is an urban park located between 59th and 110th streets and 5th and 8th avenues, almost twice the size of the Principality of Monaco, with more than 80 kilometers of walking and 10 kilometers of jogging paths, 36 uniquely designed stone and cast-iron bridges, several open-air theatres, a tennis center, many free outdoor sports facilities and much more. And it is very important that this is not only a tourist attraction, but also a favorite vacation spot for New Yorkers themselves.
Green New York. How to collect mushrooms in the “stone jungle”
Today, as part of my podcast “Alexander Genis: a view from New York”, we will go for a walk through the green New York, which exists contrary to popular belief about the “stone jungle” of Manhattan.

Asphalt – glass. I go and call. Forests and blades of grass – shaved off. North from south are avenues, west from east – streets.
The author of the remarkable New York cycle, including the poem “Broadway” just quoted, was a great master of hyperbole. Chukovsky spoke about the still young Mayakovsky, that he looks at the world through a telescope (in contrast, the critic added shrewdly, from Akhmatova, who uses a microscope).
The greenery of European cities is a by-product of civilization
Arriving in New York, Mayakovsky described not what he saw, but what he knew about the city of skyscrapers. Because of this, he ignored everything that did not fit into the familiar formula – for example, Central Park. The neglect of details also caused another almost comical mistake in the best of Mayakovsky’s American poems “Brooklyn Bridge”:
0005 to others – hungry long howl.
From here unemployed to the Hudson threw themselves upside down.

As everyone knows, even those who have only heard of the most famous bridge in New York, it spans the East River, the East River. In order for the “poor unemployed” to get from the bridge to the Hudson, they, like a demon, seagulls or angels, need to fly across the whole of Manhattan. And yet, the banal and incorrect idea of New York as the notorious stone jungle, which Mayakovsky approved, lives in the collective consciousness of compatriots – and frightens them. To refute this cliché, today we’re going for a walk in green New York.
But first, it must be said about what distinguishes the New World from the Old in this landscape area as well.
The greenery of European cities is a secondary product of civilization. Every square there is a churchyard. The roots of trees growing on the rich humus of culture are entangled in the ruins of cramped medieval life. But in America, as it often seems, and sometimes it happens, nature was simply fenced off – with a fence, a street, a city. New York did the same with the magnificent Bronx Botanical Gardens.
I must confess that during the days, weeks, months of the war, this wonderful establishment serves as an oasis of escapism for me, where it is best to admire the change of seasons. The seasons endow the confused soul with harmony. Everything here happens by itself, and we can only enjoy the elegant metamorphosis of nature, indifferent and beautiful. She lives separately from us, allowing herself to be admired.
Exhibits of the exhibition of orchids. Photo by Irina Genis
As New Yorkers do every year at the orchid exhibition in the Botanical Garden. To put it bluntly, this is the most snobbish event on the city’s secular calendar. The circle of orchid lovers includes the rich and famous. This hobby is expensive and “pedigreed” like horse racing. Therefore, at the exhibition you can meet ladies in inventive hats, gentlemen in bow ties, old ladies in veils and other fauna from good society and the past.
The general atmosphere of “Belle Epoque” is exacerbated by the scene: a greenhouse, which was built a hundred years ago according to all the rules of Victorian engineering skill. Openwork like the Eiffel Tower, the greenhouse is its own world under the roof, a refined world that is much better and certainly more beautiful than ours.

The forest that has never been cut down serves as a monument to America as it was before the arrival of the whites
But as soon as we go outside and delve into the garden, we will find a purely American rarity. About a quarter of the garden is the last virgin forest in New York City. Understanding the value of this fossil miracle, botanists carefully surrounded the thicket along the banks of the Bronx River with paths, leaving everything as it was before the arrival of the whites. This primeval, never-cut forest serves as a monument to America as it was before the arrival of the whites.
Another equally unusual prehistoric museum can be found in the south of the island, in the heart of Greenwich Village. This fenced patch of fossil greenery carefully preserves the island’s original landscape.
After spending the first third of American life on the northern edge of the island, I thoroughly studied its forests in the Inwood region. Deer, hares, foxes of amazing beauty and their victims pheasants live here. My wife and I quickly discovered the benefits of such a neighborhood, and in the early years of American life, missing the Baltic forests, we gathered mushrooms here in the fall, including my favorite chanterelles, and in May, my favorite flowers, lilies of the valley.
But, of course, the main wonder of New York is its great Central Park.
Central Park is unique in design. A neat rectangular park of three and a half square kilometers stretches over fifty blocks. Starting at the statue of Columbus on 59th Street, it stretches to the Harlem entrance on 110th Street. But penetrating the city, Central Park does not belong to it, because it lives in harmony only with its own aesthetic laws and philosophical theories.
When the park was invented, the New World was not only new, but also untamed. In the Wild West, which began, as arrogant residents of Manhattan still believe, on the other side of the Hudson, mustangs galloped, bison roamed, scalps were taken and cowboys drove around.
Mustangs were only admired by New Yorkers at the zoo, bison were valued for their smoked tongues, scalps were looked at in museums, and cowboys were only read about in westerns, which were novels until they hit Hollywood.

Like a theater within a theater, Central Park exaggerated nature
Therefore, in the greenhouse conditions of cramped Manhattan, Central Park was supposed to become the Wild West for the internal use of the townspeople. It was artificial, but a real reserve of virgin America. Like a theater within a theater, Central Park exaggerated nature. Enclosed in a stone box, she blossomed into a paradise, neglecting price and benefit. Not like Disneyland with its caricatured geography, not like the National Parks with their untouched beauty, not like romantic gardens with their poetic arbitrariness, but like a life-size model of the New World. Strictly inscribed in the correct figure, the park demonstrates its intentional origin. But the nature that got inside lives in freedom. In lined-up Manhattan, Central Park provides a refreshing respite from geometry.
This contradiction reflects the unique character of New York. He easily manages without the weapons of state building – the main square, such as Krasnaya in Moscow or Tiananmen in Beijing. In New York, this square is replaced by the Great Clearing of Central Park.
Great Clearing of Central Park
The further we go into the park, the deeper we plunge into the past. The monuments of the spirit are replaced by boulders left by glaciers. And right there, almost rivaling them in age, is the oldest attraction in New York. This is the Egyptian obelisk “Cleopatra’s Needle”. He had aged less in three and a half thousand years than in the last fifty. But now it’s been cleaned of the city’s soot, and it’s as good as new.
Approaching it, I always increase my pace out of impatience, although I understand that, having lived for 35 centuries, the obelisk will be waiting for me. The last time, staring at my favorite monument, I did not notice the frail bespectacled man and almost knocked him off his feet.
“Idiot,” his wife hissed, holding me by the floor, “you want to deprive us of Woody Allen.
There were always other celebrities in Central Park. Most often – Jacqueline Kennedy, who loved to walk and run around the reservoir. Now this circular path bears her name. Another first lady, the ex-wife of former President Sarkozy, liked our park so much that she exchanged both Paris and her husband for it.
One of my favorite American novelists, Scott Fitzgerald, was among Central Park’s ardent fans.
We settled a few hours from New York, and I found that every time I arrived in the city, I immediately drowned in the chain of events. But one thing remained undeniable: that moment of absolute peace when you drive south through Central Park in the dark, to a place where the light from the facades of 59th Street begins to break through the trees. Before me was my lost city again, serenely wrapped in its mysteries and hopes.
Scott Fitzgerald, who dedicated a real paean to 1920s New York, rightly noted the feeling of peace experienced by every pedestrian, cyclist or rider (but not driver) who enters or drives into the park, leaving behind him a thundering “midtown “, the noisiest part of the city.
New York is very difficult to surprise, but Christo managed
Central Park experienced its finest hour, stretching for 16 February days, in 2005, when Christo took over it. The same New York artist of Bulgarian origin who wrapped up the Reichstag, curtained the mountain gorge and installed umbrellas on both sides of the Pacific Ocean. At that time, Central Park became the object of his monumental fantasy, along the paths of which 600 assistants of the artist placed seven and a half thousand gates decorated with bright orange plastic. New York is very difficult to surprise, but Christo succeeded. It took 21 million dollars, five thousand tons of steel (one-third of the Eiffel Tower by weight) and one hundred thousand square meters of orange nylon.
Action Christo “Gate” in Central Park
The orange gates, reminiscent of Japanese torii, have turned the winter landscape, which means black and white, into a color movie. Gently following the relief, climbing the hillocks and descending into the clefts, man-made sights did not compete with nature, but removed it. The wind, inflating the curtains, molded them into mobile sculptures, reminiscent of orange waves, sand dunes, or colorful dreams. After all, they, too, can neither be recounted in words, nor considered in reproductions. Even the best panoramic photographs do not convey the impression of Christo’s “Gate”. It’s like dancing by correspondence: the magic of presence is lost.
crowd of onlookers turned into columns of pilgrims
I have never seen a park so beautiful. Feeling the fleeting significance of what was happening, the New Yorkers passed under the “Gate”, muffled voices, as if they were participating in a temple procession. In fact, it was so: the crowd of onlookers turned into columns of pilgrims.
“Gate”, of course, had nothing to do with the first Ukrainian Maidan, which ended with the victory of the people just a month before the opening of the Hristo happening in Central Park. But looking in New York at the apotheosis of the orange color, which has become a symbol of Ukrainian freedom, I could not help but recall the Orange Revolution in Kyiv.
For me, Central Park is inseparable from my closest friend, a wonderful artist, master of words and virtuoso of scissors Vagrich Bakhchanyan. He lived a stone’s throw from the park, and we often walked along the endless alleys. Vagrich knew every path by heart, every tree and every creature by sight.
In art, Bakhchanyan preferred a minimal shift separating pathos from parody. The most famous example is the Lenin cap on the poster of his work. Pulling it over the leader’s eyes, the artist turned Ilyich into an urka.
Vagrich Bakhchanyan in Central Park. Photo by Irina Bakhchanyan
Vagrich professed the same minimalism in fishing. Not recognizing a fishing rod, he always carried a fishing line with a hook in his pocket and threw the tackle wherever he had to, but always with success. Most often, in the same artificial lake that wraps around the already mentioned Jacqueline Kennedy path. Previously, the approach to the lake was guarded by a multi-meter wire fence. Once the city used this water, now it is used by gulls, frogs, fish and, until Bakhchanyan died. Deftly tossing the hook over the fence, he dragged white perch, fattened without fishermen. Vagrich also picked mushrooms in the park, and in the summer – berries for jam. Climbing into the thickets of Shakespeare’s hill, where all the plants mentioned by the bard are planted, Bakhchanyan composed his absurd and very funny texts.
Bakhchanyan has not been with us for many years, but we can talk to his faithful companion, friend and widow (terrible word) Irina Bakhchanyan,
What was Vagrich’s relationship with New York?
Vagrich had an inexhaustible interest, he wanted to know everything about all the artists
Irina Bakhchanyan: Vagrich treated everyone very attentively and with great benevolence – if only they didn’t get killed. When we arrived in New York, we found that many things were not very beautiful. We had such a mayor who spread terrible filth and crime in the city. But the city itself was big and the people were quite nice.
Vagrich immediately opened his large Armenian eyes with pleasure and began to look around, seeing a lot of interesting things. So he saw that he lived right next to the Metropolitan Museum, which you could go to as much as you wanted. (At that time you could even pay one cent, they were impudent. No, no, not Vagrich.) There were all the galleries around, if he wanted to see something, he could go from 92 to the very bottom, to the Village and see everything – which, by the way, he did: weekly he went around his favorite galleries, which he was interested in seeing.
Irina Bakhchanyan
Alexander Genis: I remember that Vagrich took me to all the New York galleries, and I was amazed that he knew literally all the New York artists, he was perfectly familiar with all American contemporary art. When did it start, back in Russia?
Irina Bakhchanyan: This is a good question. Vagrich had an inexhaustible interest, he wanted to know everything about all the artists. But when he arrived in New York, he could already meet them personally, of course, with those who were still alive at that time, here it was possible to find new friends. In those years, life was very active – without strict rules. Many galleries exhibited a huge number of new artists, and there was always an abundance of work. There was always something new to see. Therefore, he had a dual interest: not only to see the work, but also to see the people, the creators, so to speak (such a pompous word), to meet the authors.
I remember one day he came home on one of his regular walks in Madison and brought a large postcard, beautifully printed. In my opinion, it was an exhibition of one of the founders of pop art, Jim Dine. Vagrich says: “Look who I saw!”
On 57th Street he met, but did not talk to Yoko Ono and Lennon
It began with the fact that on 57th Street he met, but did not talk to Yoko Ono and Lennon, they obviously always walked there. Then he turned, went further along Madison, walking toward him, surrounded by a gang of some “thugs” Truman Capote. Of course, Vagrich could not miss this, he began to speak with him in the language he could, which made Capote incredibly delighted. He began to explain to his guys accompanying him: “Look, even a Russian knows me.” That is, he was very pleased with this circumstance.
Further Vagrich goes up Madison, and the sculptor Louise Nevelson was at that time, I don’t know what she was doing there, but just in case, he began to find out something from her, some creative secrets, and asked her sign too. It all happens on one piece of this Jim Dine printed postcard. There is a postcard, by the way, sometimes I look at it and remember this day very well right away.

Alexander Genis: I remember how we walked with him and saw a man in a huge white fur coat, which, I must say, is very unusual in New York.
Irina Bakhchanyan: It must have been a bear.
Alexander Genis: No, it was Keith Haring who painted graffiti. Vagrich hugged him and said: “Brother!” They really liked each other. Ira, Vagrich said: my Winter Palace is the Metropolitan Museum, my Summer Palace is Central Park. What did these two New York attractions have in common, next to which – a few blocks away – you have lived in America all your life?
Irina Bakhchanyan: These attractions were united by one name: Vagrich Bakhchanyan. Both of them welcomed him with open arms. You could go to museums as much as you wanted, look at anything. And you could also see a lot of interesting things in the park.
Alexander Genis: How did you spend your time in Central Park?
he was very careful and very polite with nature, and with the animal world, and with people too
Irina Bakhchanyan: The ritual walk usually took place on weekends, because on weekdays I had to go to the office. Our park usually started on Saturday morning, the earlier the better. I bought the New York Times on the way, we sat down near the lake, right behind the monument to Hans Christian Andersen, looked at the newspaper, read, Vagrich looked for something from the pictures. They admired the boats, watched the eagles nest in the house opposite this lake, then went somewhere else. The usual path led around this lake from all sides, then it was already possible to return home.
Alexander Genis: What is the most amusing episode connected with Vagrich and Central Park?
Irina Bakhchanyan: The thing is that he was very careful and very polite with nature, and with the animal world, and with people too. So I remember the only time he ran into a problem. It happened when, near this very lake, we saw a bird entangled in a fishing line on a tree. Of course, none of us could get past this one, Vagrich began to get it out and untangle it, she pecked at him, left marks on his fingers. Of the other living creatures, there were only raccoons, but they were very voracious, you always had to be very careful with them, no matter what they grabbed.
Alexander Genis: But did you save the bird?
Irina Bakhchanyan: Yes, of course.
Alexander Genis: Tell me, is it true that once Vagrich was mistaken for Pablo Picasso?
the coachman began to shout directly from the goat: “Hey, Picasso! Picasso!”
Irina Bakhchanyan: Yes, there was such a case. Vagrich participated in the filming as the protagonist of a short film, which then grew and turned almost into a biopic, the film “Vagrich and the Black Square”, which was shot by Andriy Zagdansky, a Ukrainian director. Vagrich read some of his texts to him, and read, and read, and read. Nearby, a Japanese woman who spoke exclusively in Japanese had already managed to adapt to him and somehow stick to him from some side, but she really liked Vagrich. They talked about something for a long time. And at that time they were passing by, because this is such the most famous road in the park, carriages pulled by horses were passing by. The driver, also dressed, by the way, rather unorthodoxly, in a top hat, in some kind of waistcoat. He saw Vagrich in a striped T-shirt, which in this outfit was very reminiscent of Picasso in the famous photograph. This driver began to shout directly from the goat: “Hey, Picasso! Picasso!” Such people were bound to somehow attach themselves to Vagrich, not to say stuck.
Alexander Genis: A wonderful New York story, very similar to New York, where every driver knows Picasso by sight.
Alexander Genis: Well, now it’s time for a surprise that ends each program from the “My New York” series. Today I will talk about the newest and most original park in the city, which has become the second – after the Statue of Liberty – a landmark in New York. This is the High Line Park, which allows you to admire New York from an unusual point of view.
High Line. Park on rails
At first glance, the High Line is just a narrow green strip that stretches over three dozen Manhattan blocks. But at a second glance, it is a masterpiece of conceptual architecture. Its authors call their idea “borrowed landscape”. Not so much by changing as by rethinking what has already been done, the park takes on a different dimension of the urban landscape. I would call it elevated.
To appreciate the audacity of the undertaking, one must hate overpasses just like all New Yorkers. Their shallow (no match for Moscow) metro is trying to jump out of the ground like a devil and rumble over the heads of defenseless citizens. Shaking the body and shaking the soul, the train rushes along the bridges that disfigure New York, like a mezzanine – a manor apartment.
“There were mezzanines, there will be a mezzanine,” announced the designers of the High Line, deciding to create a park from the unsightly waste of the industrial past.
Unemployed rails imperiously but imperceptibly guide the traveler, turning the walk into a procession
An abandoned overpass with rusty rails annoyed the city fathers for thirty years, until one of them, Mayor Giuliani, decided to demolish it. Oddly enough, the eccentrics, who found these ruins picturesque, stood up for her. Another mayor, Bloomberg, agreed with them, and soon the High Line itself went into operation, and built us. The unemployed rails imperiously but imperceptibly guide the traveler, turning the walk into a procession. Walking along the sleepers, because there is nowhere else, we obey the measured rhythm of the spectacle, which changes with every step.
There is something of a ritual about it, as if Stonehenge had been spun and pulled out. There is something in this from the parks of Versailles, which subjugated the nature of geometry. There is something of a romantic garden in this, which poeticizes even artificial ruins. But mostly New York.
A pathological exhibitionist, this city craves to be seen and is meant to be seen at all times and from everywhere. For a New Yorker, there is nothing more precious than the view from the window. Actually, the High Line turned out to be so successful because it offered Manhattan a new movable frame, which updated the hardened scene. Walking through the park, we look at the city not from the gallery, not from the stalls, but from the mezzanine: far enough not to mix with the crowd, close enough not to miss a single detail. All of them seem unusual, because we ourselves found ourselves in an altered – uplifted – state. Skyscrapers are visible from the knees. Cars flaunt their roofs, passers-by their hats, the hills open up beyond the Hudson.
But, to be honest, the most interesting thing is to look into other people’s windows. The path leading through residential areas does not allow, but forces to spy. Others might be embarrassed, but New York City is an extrovert on steroids, so property prices immediately shot up in the real estate market with park-facing windows. Some of them were decorated with luxurious curtains, others, on the contrary, abandoned them altogether, the third put up his portrait so as not to lose the attention of tourists even when the owner is not at home.
Quickly learning the benefits of the view from above, the artists battle for the right to get on the huge billboard that the park director rents out to the most original ones.
But what impresses the High Line most of all is that in the process of converting the nasty ruins into a fashionable attraction, almost nothing has changed. The same unprepossessing flora sprouted through the applied soil, persistent and stubborn, like all living things in New York, decrepit iron, bent levers, a scattering of pebbles. The designers have preserved every rusty detail, urging us to admire the industrial era that replaces the melancholic antiquities of the Old World in America.
You have listened to the new episode of my podcast “Genis: A New York Perspective”. In it, we took a walk through the green New York to get acquainted with its parks.

The Colella Family
What can we say about World of Wonders? There really are no exact words to describe the kind of place it is. From the moment that we walked in with our son, Paul, four years ago, we knew that World of Wonders was a place where you knew that your child will be cared for, taught, loved, and would be safe in someone else’s hands. Our youngest son, Nicholas, started World of Wonders this year. We did not hesitate at all to send him as soon as we could. Based on Paul’s experience, we knew that Nicholas would love it too, and he does! He loves going there and when we pick him up at the end of the day, he says “I had great day. ” We cannot say enough wonderful things about the staff at World of Wonders and we truly appreciate everyone there. Anyone who asks us where they can send their child, we immediately say World of Wonders. It is a place that builds a strong educational and social foundation and is a place that we will always recommend.
The Rivera Family
We feel extremely blessed to have found this school. The minute our son started World of Wonders we saw changes in his independence and especially his speech. Daily updates with pictures on their class dojo App allow us to stay connected while at work. Ms Jenn & Ms Nikki truly are the best! We highly recommend this school.
The Hickey Family
As working parents, it’s hard to find a place that can provide a comfortable and secure environment for our children. However, we found that place with World of Wonders. Thanks to Jeannine and her amazing staff, we attribute so much of our son’s growth and excelled development to World of Wonders. We truly are grateful to have found World of Wonders and recommend it to anyone who is looking for the very best care for their child.

Secrets of survival of plants and animals in the most severe season of the year – analytical portal POLIT.RU
CoLibri and Azbuka-Atticus Publishers present a book by Bernd Heinrich, Professor of Biology at the University of Vermont, Winter. Secrets of the survival of plants and animals in the most severe time of the year ”(translated by Alexandra Gromova).
Since the onset of winter radically affects the state of one of the most important components of all living things – water, there must be no less dramatic changes in the physiology and behavior of animals in response to environmental changes. Some creatures survive by producing special substances, while others remain in constant motion to maintain their body temperature. Having avoided the threat of freezing to death, the animals must still have time to find food during its shortage or store it in advance during the summer abundance. The famous American naturalist Bernd Heinrich describes the strategies used by weasels, flying squirrels, kingbirds, turtles, aquatic rodents, frogs, insects, hamsters, bats, butterflies, bears, bees and many other members of the animal kingdom to survive in harsh winter conditions. Beautifully illustrated with the author’s drawings and filled with his inexhaustible love for nature, this book highlights the behavior of animals and plants during the coldest time of the year.
We suggest you read the chapter about wintering frogs.
Frozen frogs in ice
In autumn, when the birds have flown away, I often hear bird-like sounds coming from the forest, especially if there are several warm days. I have tried many times to carefully sneak up and find out who is making these sounds, but so far I have not been able to find out much, except that this creature is hiding on or near the ground. Every time I got so close that I almost stepped on the source of the sound, it subsided, and I never saw anything.
I came across one passage from the famous American naturalist writer John Burroughs, who apparently managed to track down the source of similar sounds. On the last day of December 1884, when it was unusually warm, so much so that the bees flew out of the hives, Burroughs was walking in the woods in his home state of New York and stopped in the shade of a hemlock. From under the damp leaves on the ground in front of him came a sound like a frog. Determining exactly where the sound was coming from, he tore up the leaves and found a forest frog. “So,” Burroughs concluded, “this was where she hibernated — she was preparing to spend the winter covered with damp, sticky leaves, the only thing that would separate her from the frosty air” (Now much is already known about exactly how amphibians survive the winter, but no one still does not know why some of those amphibians that in the mating season, only in the spring, when the ice melts, arrange loud choirs, sometimes screaming one by one in the fall).
Amphibians, especially toads, have been known to burrow into the ground to escape the frost. Gardeners, including yours truly, often find them digging up the ground in the fall. Some toads go quite deep, as John Tester and Walter Breckenridge, two biologists at the Museum of Natural History at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, found out while studying the Dakota toad ( Bufo hemiophrys ) on the Woban Prairie in northwest Minnesota. This area is known for extremely cold winters. The life of the toad is connected with water in numerous pits, while the animals move away from the water by 20–35 meters in order to dig into the burrow of the saccular jumper for the duration of hibernation. Over three years, two researchers collected 7483 toads from 8 holes, provided them with radioactive labels (tantalum-182 with an activity of 100 microcuries) and periodically tracked the location of the animals using a scintillation counter, remaining above the ground.
Research has shown that toads burrow even during hibernation and go deeper during the winter. They are buried 120 centimeters or more, all the time being just below the freezing level of the soil, which is constantly lowering. Toads stop digging and stop at 1-2°C above zero, which is also their body temperature.
Burroughs reasoned that his wood frog would certainly burrow into the ground like a toad if it expected a harsh winter. But, since she remained on the surface of the earth, which was soon to freeze, Burroughs decided that the coming winter should be mild. However, the winter was severe: on the Hudson River nearby, the ice was thicker than half a meter, and even in March, when Burroughs returned to examine the frog again at its wintering place under the leaves, there was a severe frost.
Leaf layer frozen and hardened. Burroughs lifted them up and found the frog “as fresh and unharmed as autumn”, though the ground beneath it was “hardened with frost like stone”. The naturalist wrote: “This incident made me convinced of two things: that the frogs know no more about the coming weather than we do, and that for the winter they do not go into the ground as deep as previously thought.” Burroughs would certainly have become even more convinced that frogs cannot predict the weather if he came across a frozen individual. According to him, the frog, which he found on the frozen ground, “blinked and nodded his head” when he touched it.
Now fast forward nearly a hundred years to William Schmid, a comparative physiologist at the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis. Schmid had previously studied the tolerance of frogs to dehydration, and, like Burroughs, made the “serendipal” discovery of finding a forest frog in winter in a shallow hiding place under leaves. But Schmid’s discovery soon turned the conventional wisdom upside down, mainly due to his second observation: when he took the animal in his hands, he noticed that it did not do what frogs usually do in human hands, namely, they do not blink. Looks like the frog was frozen.
Wood frog (Rana sylvatica)
Since Schmid had previously found that different frog species are quite well adapted to survive each in their own specific habitat, the scientist doubted that the animal he found had made a fatal mistake and not dug deep enough or chose a bad place to spend the winter. He trusted his intuition, which told him that a frozen frog might still be alive, and so came the now classic study of frog survival in the cold. Schmid published his paper in the prestigious journal Science under the modest title Survival of Frogs in Low Temperatures.
To the best of my knowledge, this paper was the first to describe freeze tolerance as a winter survival strategy in vertebrates. Perhaps Burroughs couldn’t believe his eyes when he saw the frog blinking under the frozen foliage, sitting on the frost-hardened ground. According to his description, he found the frog in such conditions that it, too, should have been frozen. For most animals, freezing is certain death.
Kenneth and Janet Storey at Carleton University in Ottawa picked up the freeze tolerance research banner and investigated the physiological basis of this phenomenon in frogs. They confirmed and extended Schmid’s discovery, and we now know that several types of hibernating frogs are common in North America – wood frog, variable tree frog, whistling tree frog, and three-band tree frog ( Pseudacris triseriata ), which are resistant to freezing.
In such frogs, ice forms in the body cavity and intercellular space (up to 65% of the water in the body can turn into ice in the forest frog), but in those who survive, ice crystals do not form in the cells themselves. Usually, if ice crystals appear in a cell, it is deadly: sharp as a knife, they cut through membranes, pierce organelles and destroy the cell. The lethal temperature threshold for a frog is only -8 ° C, because at temperatures below this, ice still begins to form in the cells. But in places where forest frogs spend the winter, under leaves and snow, the temperature rarely drops below. (Where the whistling, three-striped, and variable tree frogs hibernate is not entirely known. In the autumn, I often hear whistling tree frogs whistle in the forest, so, apparently, they hibernate somewhere. A colleague told me that he found a variable tree frog under the departed from a tree with bark, while another employee had an animal prepared to spend the winter in a flower pot, which she brought into the house in the fall.)
All four species of frogs mentioned, wintering on the surface of the earth, are able to survive if half of the water in their body turns into ice, but this is not possible without chemicals that solve two main problems. One compound (most often the alcohol glycerol) protects the membranes when the frog freezes, while the other (mainly glucose) participates primarily (but not exclusively) in the osmotic reaction, due to which ice is formed only outside the cells.
However, unlike many insects that harden in the cold, which also use alcohols and sugars and soak their tissues with them before winter, frogs do not accumulate these substances in the body in autumn before freezing. They wait for ice to form, and then in one day they rebuild and become frost-resistant. Frogs gain the ability to tolerate freezing through a modified adrenaline fear response found in other vertebrates, such as humans.
All vertebrates have a physiological fight-or-flight response when information from the senses about a threat, say, an attacking lion, causes the release of the hormone adrenaline from the adrenal glands. Adrenaline causes a variety of effects, but in general they add up to the readiness of the body to withstand the situation. The heartbeat accelerates, the level of glucose in the blood rises, more blood flows to the muscles. This adrenaline response in forest frogs has changed in such a way as to withstand freezing, which is fatal to all aquatic frogs and, of course, to humans.
When the first ice crystals begin to form on or inside the wood frog’s skin, an alarm response is triggered. Skin receptors relay the freezing message to the central nervous system (CNS), and the CNS activates the adrenal medulla to release adrenaline into the bloodstream. Entering the liver, adrenaline activates enzymes in it that convert glycogen stores in this organ into glucose. As a result, the frog reacts with a sharp increase in blood glucose. In the wood frog, this is a very powerful reaction, and before the ice reaches the cells, they are filled with glucose, which acts as a cryoprotectant.
Exactly the opposite happens outside, in the space between cells, where special proteins induce the formation of ice crystals and stimulate its formation in areas of low concentration of liquid. As a result, chambers of concentrated liquid are formed, which, by osmosis, draw water out of the cells, and they become even more resistant to the formation of ice. After about 15 hours, the frog is frozen to a solid state, except for the internal contents of the cells. The heart stops. The blood doesn’t flow. There is no breathing. In almost every way, the animal is dead. But ready to come back to life.
Glucose is a common sugar in the blood of vertebrates, from which cells obtain energy. In a healthy, active animal, blood glucose levels are normally precisely regulated by two hormones, insulin and glucagon. When there is not enough glucose in the blood, a person faints, and when there is too much, he suffers from a number of short and long-term consequences. Normally, a person’s blood glucose level is maintained at about 90 mg per 100 ml of blood, but in a stressful situation this level rises slightly. If the blood glucose level is elevated and chronically kept at a level of about 140 mg per 100 ml of blood, a diagnosis of diabetes mellitus is made. Today, diabetes can be treated by injecting artificial insulin, a hormone that, in one version of the disease, comes from the pancreas in insufficient quantities (in type 1 diabetes, the pancreas is destroyed as a result of an autoimmune reaction [1], in type 2 diabetes, the susceptibility of receptors in the body to hormone or not enough).
When a frog senses that ice crystals are starting to form in just one toe of its paw, its blood glucose reaches a level that would send a human into a coma and the next world several times (in a reaction that looks like a hyper-anxiety reaction, frogs secrete up to 4500 mg of glucose per 1 dl of blood). But the frog is able to endure it, partly because its body temperature is close to zero at that moment and its metabolism is relatively inert, so this is the ticket that ensures its survival and tolerance to freezing.
If the frog’s metabolism continued to function in the body, soon after its heart and breathing stopped, its tissues would begin to experience oxygen starvation. But glucose at high concentrations acts as a cryoprotectant, mechanically protecting tissues from ice crystal formation, and as an agent that helps draw water out of cells. It also lowers the already very low aerobic metabolism of the animal and suppresses the metabolism, allowing the cells to store limited energy stores for the winter. Penetrating into cells, glucose also becomes a substrate for anaerobic metabolism when oxygen stops flowing into the body.
To freeze the body and bring it back to life by defrosting is an old blue dream of cryobiologists. Frogs hibernating on the ground in the forest do this regularly: with the onset of spring, when it is time to mate, they come out of freezing. Like the bears in the winter dream, which I will talk about later, frogs are a miracle of nature and can shake our ideas about the limits of the possible.

How To Throw a Birthday for a 3-Year-Old
You want to make your child’s birthday party the best it can be. They’re at an age right now where they have lots of emotions, can still become overwhelmed quickly, and might still need a nap. So how can you make their birthday party run as smoothly as possible?
Here are our top tips for throwing your child a third birthday party.
Don’t overwhelm yourself: Sticking to a theme is fun, but if it’s going to add more stress, you don’t need a theme. Your little one won’t mind! As long as there is cake, a few gifts, and their favorite people — they’ll be happy.
Keep the guest list small: Your child probably has a few friends now. While it can be hard to know who to invite — especially if they go to daycare — keeping it small is easier for you. Perhaps you want two friends, but maybe you can handle 10. Do whatever works for you, but don’t feel pressured to invite the whole class. Make sure you have your friends and family there, too, if that’s an important element.
Limit gifts: If you’re overwhelmed with the amount of stuff your three-year-old has, ask guests not to bring a gift. If they insist, ask them to donate money to a charity of your choice instead or gift your child a book. They don’t add as much clutter!
Work around the nap: Your three-year-old probably still has an afternoon nap, and it’s crucial you don’t skip that, especially on such a busy day. A morning party is best for a three-year-old.
Have activities: A structured party is going to work best right now. Have set time for games, cake, and food. That way, you’re in control the whole time, and there is less room for surprises!
Provide food: Adults will be sticking around, so make sure there is food for everyone to enjoy. A buffet with kid- and adult-friendly snacks is going to be a huge hit. If you want to take some stress off yourself, hire a caterer to provide the goods!
Have an end time: Even though the party might only be a couple of hours long, it’s going to be full-on. State the end time on the invitation and make sure guests leave when you want them to. A good way to get them out the door is to have everybody do a conga line to their cars!
Don’t have it at home: If you are freaking out about having so many people in your home, hire a venue. Perhaps you have a town hall, or your local gym does parties. It will be less overwhelming for you to host it outside of your home.
Stick to a budget: Your child is turning three, and they probably won’t remember the party. Plan a budget and stick to it. Don’t go overboard. Save that for their 16th!
Party favors: At this age, guests will probably expect party favors. Goody bags with a notepad, stickers, a coloring book, and some candy will go down a treat.
FAQs
Should I Have a Birthday Party for My 3-Year-Old?
Three is a really fun age to throw a party, especially if you haven’t thrown one before. Your bundle of joy might have a group of friends from daycare or playgrounds, and they will enjoy seeing them at their party. You can do toddler-friendly activities — like musical chairs, singing, pass the parcel, and Simon Says — to make the party age-appropriate.
Plus, your toddler might now ask for a party. This allows you to involve them in the party planning to ensure the celebration suits their preferences.
However, you don’t need to throw your three-year-old a party. If they don’t want one or you know it will overwhelm them, there are plenty of other special ways to celebrate their party. For example, you can enjoy a family day trip or maybe book a short weekend getaway.
How Long Should a 3-Year-Old Birthday Party Last?
The sweet spot for a third birthday party is 1.5 to two hours. If it’s any longer than that, your toddler will get totally wiped out, making the rest of the day more of a challenge.
What Do 3-Year-Olds Play With?
Most toys are suitable for a three-year-old, making it exciting (and pretty easy) for parents to shop for their birthday gift. Some examples of toys include:
Do You Open Gifts at a Kid’s Birthday Party?
Ahh, the burning question. What do you do about all the gifts?
When guests arrive with gifts, your toddler might be desperate to open them. A good idea for a three-year-old is to ask them to wait until the end of the party and allow them to choose three to open in front of guests. If you let them open more, they could get overwhelmed, other kids could get jealous, and they might end up forgetting all their “thank you’s,” leaving guests disappointed.
We believe kids should open the presents afterward if they can wait. When guests arrive, you can ask them to discreetly pop the gifts in another room. Over the next few days, let your kids open the presents at their own pace.
Opening the presents in private allows your child to react without any pressure. With their short attention spans, they can move on to the next present or take a pause if they need to.
Make sure that you keep a list of who gifted what — and get your child involved in writing the thank you notes.
Overall, do what your child is most comfortable with. If you know they’ll graciously open the gifts at the party, give it a go and see what happens. But our top tip is to leave it to the end in case there are tears.
Third Time’s the Charm
Celebrating your three-year-old is a wonderful occasion. Whether you want an extravagant celebration or something more low-key, we have 60 amazing ideas for throwing a birthday bash that your toddler will love.
Remember to do what works best for your family. That might be inviting 50 people, but that might be keeping it to immediate family only. Overall, it’s best to keep the party short (around two hours), save the gifts for later, and make sure your toddler gets their afternoon nap once the party is done.

How to celebrate a girl’s 3rd birthday: how to congratulate, ideas, scripts
Tips for mothers
How to celebrate a birthday at home
By the day when the baby turns 3, consider how to decorate the room, what to cook, what to give to the birthday girl . In addition, buy small souvenirs for guests – stickers, magnets, balls – they will proudly show them to their relatives at home. Choose competitions for children. The task of adults is to have a fun holiday.
A 3-year-old girl’s birthday is a bright holiday among friends.

Decide whether the birthday will be themed. Take care of accessories and costume details, or simply plan fun contests and activities where outdoor games are interrupted by more relaxed ones.
Room decoration
Remove unnecessary things and objects from the room. Buy bright balloons with cartoon characters, flags, garlands, letters, numbers, especially the main one – the number 3. Children are still small, so holiday accessories and decorations should be large enough and safe. A lot of helium balloons under the ceiling will delight children and set them up for a holiday.
Menu ideas for a children’s party
Disposable tableware with children’s drawings and bright napkins are suitable for beautiful serving. Decorate dishes to make them look unusual: salads with figurines of animals, flowers from vegetables. The main dish should not be unusual. Puree, cutlets, pies, children will eat with pleasure. Cut fruit into pieces, but pitted berries are not suitable for babies.
Do not offer exotic foods that children are not used to. Do not forget about drinks – compote is best.
What to present
A 3-year-old girl can already appreciate not only a toy, but also a beautiful outfit. But a soft toy animal, children’s dishes or a doll will bring her more joy. She will also like a bright book with fairy tales or poems. However, it is better to show gifts to your princess after the guests leave, otherwise you will not wait for the attention to the program.
Scenarios for a girl’s birthday 3 years old
If a thematic birthday is chosen, then you need a scenario where contests will be woven along the way. Girls love to be princesses and fairies, but at 3 years old they will appreciate just fun contests, playful competitions and a fabulous puppet show.
In anticipation of the guests, invite the children who have come to color a house or a seven-color flower drawn on a large sheet of paper. You need to turn on pleasant music right away.
At this age, children love:
Games. Choose ones where kids interact with adults, because three-year-olds need to show everything by example. The rules are simple and clear. If the game doesn’t work, move on to another one. The attention of children quickly switches, do not let them get bored. Girls love to play “Edible-Inedible”, “Magic Bag”. To make the kids move, you can play Geese-Swans, Teremok.
Competitions, riddles for the little ones. Give everyone a medal or prize for participating. You can arrange a “Delicious guessing game” – the child is blindfolded and put a piece of fruit in his mouth. He must say what it is.
Circ. Arrange a comic circus performance where children will play the role of trained dogs, cats, clowns in an imaginary arena. Accessories – caps, noses, masks – will create the illusion of a real circus.
Puppet show. Simple, short, prepared and shown by adults. Babies are active spectators.
Think it through in advance so that it’s fun and doesn’t take too long. After the feast, arrange a disco.
Farewell souvenirs for guests will be a pleasant memory of the holiday.

Three years is the first birthday for a baby, when he is able to understand the essence and meaning of what is happening with his thinking, which begins to undergo the first age crisis, widely known in child psychology as the “crisis of three years”.
However, a crisis is a crisis, and we will talk about joy. Because the realization of oneself as an individual separate from this world has come into the life of a child. This is still difficult for him, and let this day be decorated with joy and fun, and the article will help organize it all.
Organization of a birthday party for a boy who turns three years old
Until the age of three, the whole world and the world of the child himself exist inseparably in his perception, all the people around him, including his parents and caregivers, are simply part of this world. All the people around him have neither their own interests nor feelings. For the child, they are part of his own life and take place when they appear in the field of his perception, their departure and return is a mystery to him.
And at the age of three, the child will begin to realize himself, learning to stand out from the world of other people, positioning, and looking for himself in this world. These changes, if you imagine them, are simply amazing!
So, the child begins to position himself. The kids of this age are big fidgets, yet completely unaware of how it is to play all together. Now each of them is a small center of their own universe. Adults are entrusted with the duty of entertainers, naturally they must be ready for this.
The best time to start the celebration will be the second half of the day, after the baby sleeps in the afternoon, around 16.00. – 17.00. At this time, the rested children will be as ready as possible for the upcoming exciting events and magical adventures at the birthday of the hero of the occasion.
Holiday decorations
The decoration of the holiday at home should be a surprise for the young birthday person, which will create a sense of celebration in him and cause a feeling of satisfaction that all this appeared especially on the occasion of his birthday. Therefore, the design of the house should be done while the child is sleeping, so that his awakening takes place already in a fabulous and bright atmosphere of the holiday.
There is no need to create a special theme for celebrating a birthday at this age. It is quite difficult for a child to perceive the plot lines and connect them with some topic. It is quite possible to create a holiday atmosphere by decorating the room with balloons, pictures, photographs and toys – all this should be:
bright and colorful;
design elements should be large in order to avoid getting into the nose, mouth or ears of young researchers;
environmentally friendly and non-hazardous.
The kid should, entering the room decorated for the significant day, immediately be engulfed in anticipation of bright and joyful events. Now many wonderful things are made from ordinary helium balloons for the holiday – flowers, various animals, grass and leaves will look great under the ceiling and on the walls.
Children’s feast
It would be best to start with the festive table. The holiday will require energy, and even if the table is set, this fact will most likely distract the kids from entertainment.
At this age, children still have a lot of restrictions in terms of culinary delights. The main restrictions apply to canned foods, food allergens, various hot seasonings and spices. It is also better to avoid excesses with salty, sour and bitter foods, foods high in sugar and too fatty.
This age is characterized by a conservative attitude to food and a lack of love for experiments. Even a combination of only two or three ingredients in food in one dish often causes a disapproving attitude among the little ones.
Mashed potatoes with low-fat, perhaps chicken cutlets and simple sandwiches will be just what you need. And from the sweet, you can make a mini-competition for the independent production of a delicious cake or decorating a gingerbread.
It would also be nice if drinks were plentiful, and they would not be high in sugar. It can be homemade fruit drinks and compotes or non-allergic juices.
Holiday ideas and scenarios
It is worth repeating once again that a single plot line for celebrating a birthday at 3 years old will be redundant and even tedious for kids. The ability to focus on something for quite a long time will not come to the child soon, and the main feature of his thinking at this age is that the attention of the little one switches from subject to subject. Through this, he constantly learns and learns the world while playing. Birthday is another reason to help him with this.
The main need of a baby at this age is to find his place in this world of “other people” that has suddenly opened up to him and feel at the same time as comfortable as possible. Therefore, you need to start with the fact that the child understands that he is the main one at this celebration of life.
Congratulations to his children and parents who came to his birthday, a round dance around the birthday boy and the indispensable singing “Loaf – loaf . ..” at the same time, will help the baby feel the positive focus of the attention of the guests. Gifts will be best viewed and unpacked when guests leave the house. Otherwise, this activity can lead to the fact that the birthday boy forgets about the invitees.
At the end of the festive meal, you can go directly to the fun. This part of the program should take a couple of hours. Adult organizers should think over an action plan in advance. For the most part, children of this age are restless. Complex rules are alien to them, and they do not really adhere to simple rules.
Puppet show . A small theatrical reprise, compiled and conducted by the efforts of adults. The children will become an appreciative audience. You can take any fairy tale or famous cartoon as a motive. Decoration and toys will be required, or you can purchase a ready-made kit. After the “premiere”, you can let the children play with the characters of the play.
Outdoor games.
Hunting snake. Cheerful children’s music is turned on. Kids jump, run, frolic. The music ends abruptly, all players must squat down and hide so that the snake “can’t see them”. A pre-made or purchased toy snake “crawls” with the help of an adult past the players. The task of the children is to keep calm and not run away from the “snake”. A game to develop endurance in a child.
Geese – swans. Traditional fun, where the role of the “wolf” must first go to an adult. When one of the children-geese does not have time to hide in the house and gets caught by the “wolf”, then he will start to drive. For the game you will need a wolf mask.
Mouse dance. Children – “mice” walk in a round dance, in the center of which there is a “cat” – a leader from among the children. The kids read the poem.
Mice lead a round dance
The cat sleeps on the bed.
“Quiet, mice, do not make noise,
Don’t wake cat Lema
Here Lyomka wakes up – a cat
And disperse the round dance!
As soon as the word “who” sounds, the driver should “wake up” and rush to catch “mice”. You can make children’s chairs with minks, sitting on which children will “hide” from the cat.
Throw toys . If there are a sufficiently large number of toys at home, and no more than six children are visiting along with the birthday boy, then the children are divided into two teams. In the middle of the room, a “border” is drawn with a rope. Both teams are given an equal number of toys, at the signal of the leader, the teams begin to throw toys into the territory of the enemy, and they, in turn, throw them back. The winner is the one who manages to throw all the toys on the side of the opposing team.
Find a mate. Each pair of children is given the same items. For example, one couple, two participants – a tennis ball, the other – a handkerchief. At the command of the adult leader, everyone scatters one by one and randomly runs around him to the music. The host gives a second signal, at which the children must quickly find their partner and stand side by side. The loser is the couple that has been looking for each other longer.
Who did what. At this age, most children like to do simple tasks – instructions that apply directly to them personally. The adult presenter says, “Stand on one leg, all those who drank kefir today” or “Jump those who like ice cream.” Such a game usually includes a heated and cheerful debate about who drinks and eats what and who likes what. Such a relaxed atmosphere, in addition to fun, serves as a stimulant for the development of speech. The command can be executed to repeat the name of the colors, for example, “Sit down those who have something green on their clothes”
Jumpers. Balloons are hung from the ceiling, at a height accessible to a three-year-old child in a jump. Inside, you must first put foam balls or confetti. The host calls the color of the ball, and the kids should jump up and hit the balls whose color was named with their hands.
On the pebbles – across the stream. As the banks of the stream, pieces of rope, ribbons or skipping ropes are used. The distance between them is 2 – 2.5 meters. The role of pebbles is performed by circles cut out of cardboard or plain paper. Kids from two teams are invited to race, to overcome the “stream” in two directions. The game is simple and unpretentious, but for three years it is very suitable for developing coordination of movements and raising the mood.
If you take care of the advance preparation of costumes, then you can organize a game based on famous children’s cartoons , such as “Smeshariki” or “Luntik”, or fairy tales, like “Teremka”. It will also be possible to organize a small thematic costume performance, with the release of the princess by the brave knights from the clutches of an insidious dragon or the rescue of our planet by a team of super heroes.
Gift choice
I would like to say right away that it is not worth giving a child three years old. Any gadgets and devices for such a young age will bring nothing but harm.
