Parent spots bear near Gurnee daycare center

Bear spotted near Gurnee daycare center, popular mall
01:33

GURNEE, Ill. (CBS) – Gurnee police issued an unusual warning after a bear was seen near a daycare center on Wednesday morning.

A parent at the Hunt Club Kindercare shot a video that appears to show a black bear running in the area of Hunt Club Road and Route 132 on Wednesday morning. The center is right across from the busy Gurnee Mills Mall.

CBS 2’s Marissa Perlman had the story on the search for the animal and warning from authorities.

Police received the call around 8:45 a.m. When officers arrived, a bear was nowhere to be found.

It’s not clear why the animal made its way into such a populated area.

Parents who spoke with CBS 2 said they got an email from the daycare saying everyone inside was OK.

“I think it was a little scary to have a bear so near like that and then there’s kids,” said parent Jessica Francoeur. “Thank God they were inside and the play yard is gated. That’s good too.”

There were no reports of anyone being hurt. The police department is working with wildlife officials to respond to the area if the animal is spotted.

“When I got the text message from the school, I was like, bear?” said another parent. “And then I saw the video and I’m like my God, not what I thought I’d be worried about today!”

Once common, black bears don’t have a resident population in the area, but the Department of Natural Resources said individual bears may travel to Illinois from Missouri and Wisconsin. The IDNR has reported just five spottings in the past five years.

If residents come across the bear, they’re asked not to run or surprise the animal.

Every born healthy baby gets acquainted with the world through five senses – touch, hearing, sight, taste, smell. Every day, babies show more and more interest in the world around them , wanting to touch what they see, rustle with what moves in his pen or try everything that can be stuffed into his mouth. Babies do not usually actively play during the first months of life, but playfulness is in their blood and should be encouraged through toys that stimulate the senses . Various rattles, bright, contrasting toys with various textures promote the healthy development of the baby, natural curiosity and desire to know the world around. The online store Kaup24.ee offers various , suitable toys for babies at a very good price .

The main goals in the first six months are to teach the baby to concentrate and coordinate the movements of the arms and legs. You need to form these skills with the help of toys. We have you you will find and will be able to order various bright, beautiful and melodic toys that will bring joy, surprise and arouse interest to the baby.

Babies under 1 year old are just getting to know the world around them, so it is important for them to touch, see and hear. Our online store recommends choosing large but light soft toys that are easy to hold or hug. Children of this age like bright colors, therefore it is worth choosing colorful, eye-catching toys. When the baby begins to sit, we offer a large selection of various cubes, pyramids, puzzles, as well as books with solid pages and bright pictures . This is also a learning tool, for example, a book with animals can be the first book that introduces the world of animals. It is important for children of this age to understand and know their personality , so the collection of toys should also include a plastic mirror , in which one can see and recognize oneself.

For toddlers who are starting their first steps, we offer various aids, walkers. The first steps are only the beginning of a long process of developing motor skills, so it is important that the child plays, moves, understands and feels space. A sandbox, a mini-pool for games and toys suitable for such conditions (shovels, buckets, buckets) are great for this. Big blocks, various puzzles are a pleasant challenge for children, and at the same time develop logical thinking. At this age, we recommend that you introduce them to musical instruments (mini-drums, rattles), as well as other toys that promote creativity.

11 days late negative pregnancy test: My period Is late, but I took a pregnancy test and the result was negative. Could I still be pregnant?

How Soon Is the Earliest You Can Test for Pregnancy?

When you think you might be unexpectedly pregnant, it can feel like torment waiting to know for sure. You might have sore breasts, mild cramping, and other signs of early pregnancy that could also be premenstrual symptoms, and it causes you to waver back and forth, thinking you are pregnant and then thinking you are not. That can leave you feeling more confused and wondering how soon you can get the answers you need. You have seen ads for pregnancy tests that claim to detect pregnancy five days before your expected period. So, should you test that early? How soon is too early to test for pregnancy? Could you be further along in pregnancy than you think?

When Is It Too Early to Test for Pregnancy?

If you take a pregnancy test before you have missed your period, you increase your chances of getting a false negative result. This means the test will read negative when you actually are pregnant, so experts recommend waiting until you have already missed your period to prevent false-negative test results.

Why Wait?

As hard as it is, it is best to wait so that if you are pregnant, your body has enough time to produce human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), the hormone that a pregnancy test will detect in your urine. Your peace of mind in knowing your result is accurate is worth it!

How Do Pregnancy Tests Work?

After sex, an egg is fertilized with sperm (fertilization). The fertilized egg travels to the uterus and attaches into the uterine lining (implantation). Implantation occurs about 7-14 days after you have had sex, and it triggers your body to start producing the pregnancy hormone, hCG. Your hCG levels will double every 48-72 hours after implantation, and it is important to give those levels time to climb.

What About Early Pregnancy Tests?

Early pregnancy test manufacturers market to your desire to get answers as early as possible. It is not hard to see the advertising on the box and read the claims of 99% accuracy along with the ability to detect pregnancy six days before your missed period.

But let us take a closer look, so you do not test too early for pregnancy. The first thing to consider is that the percentage provided on the front of the package is only accurate when you take the test on the day of your expected period — and in a laboratory setting by professionals. The same goes for the the instructions printed inside the pregnancy test kit; the claims of accuracy are elevated because they do not reflect real-life testing in real-life situations.  The results from a University of New Mexico study reveal the chances you can anticipate getting the right answer from an early home pregnancy test:

  • One day past your expected period: 100% of pregnancies detected
  • On the day of your expected period: 96% of pregnancies detected
  • On the day before your expected period: 93% of pregnancies detected
  • Two days before your expected period: 81% of pregnancies detected
  • Three days before your expected period: 68% of pregnancies detected
  • Four days before your expected period: 42% of pregnancies detected
  • Five days before your expected period: 33% of pregnancies detected
  • Six days before your expected period: 25% of pregnancies detected

When Is the Best Time in Your Cycle to Test?

Although your body begins to produce hCG 7 to 10 days after fertilization, waiting provides the most accurate results. In order to give your body enough time for hCG to build up to a detectable level in your urine by a pregnancy test, it is best to take a pregnancy test about 14 days after fertilization. For a woman who has a 28-day cycle and ovulates 14 days after her last period, this would mean testing on the day you expect your next period if you suspect you are pregnant. For the most accurate results, take a pregnancy test a couple of days after your missed period.

If your test is negative and your period does not start, you still might be pregnant, but your hCG levels are just not high enough to register on the test. Most testing kit instructions recommend you wait one week to take another test; however, many women test a few days later. Contact a healthcare professional if you still have a negative pregnancy test or have further questions.

When Is the Best Time of Day to Take a Pregnancy Test?

The best time of day to take a pregnancy test is first thing in the morning because at that time your urine  contains the highest concentration of hCG. This is particularly important the earlier you are taking your pregnancy test. You can test later in the day, but you will have a higher chance of seeing a false-negative test result because your urine will be diluted. Tips for testing include:

  • Use first-morning urine (or after you haven’t urinated in at least four hours).
  • Don’t drink a lot of fluid that could dilute your hCG levels before your test.
  • Check to make sure the pregnancy test is not expired, which can provide inaccurate results. Checking the expiration date is particularly important if you keep pregnancy tests at home “just in case.”
  • It is understandable that once you have the pregnancy test in your hands, you want to get to the answers quickly. Plus, it seems like a no-brainer because they are designed to be easy to use. Take time to read all of the instructions and follow them precisely. Even if you have taken pregnancy tests before, little variances between them can be the difference between a result you can count on and a wrong one.
  • We all know how easy it is to lose track of time, so do not try to estimate when to read your results. Set a timer so you can read your test results exactly at the time directed in the instructions. Do not read the test window after that set time because a faint “evaporation line” can appear, which makes your test appear to be positive when it is really negative.

Hopefully, this information is helpful to understand the value of not testing too early for pregnancy, so you can have peace of mind knowing your results are accurate.

When to Take a Pregnancy Test

What can I do if I think I’m pregnant?

Okay, almost every person who can become pregnant has been faced with a pregnancy scare at one time or another.   Whether you are feeling mild anxiety or are in a complete meltdown, there are some simple facts that might be helpful. Each situation is different, but we will try to help here.

If you have had unprotected sex within the last 5 days and do not want to be pregnant, you may want to try emergency contraception (EC). You can get over-the-counter emergency contraception at most drug and grocery stores without a prescription in every US state. Brand names like PLAN B work no better than the many generics out there, so cheaper versions are fine.

One consideration, if you have a BMI of 30 or more, or weigh more than 165 pounds, this option may not be effective for you. ELLA is a prescription brand of EC that is not impacted by body size. Another option is going to a clinic for the insertion of a Paragard IUD. These are all options to prevent pregnancy even after unprotected sex.

When can I take a pregnancy test?

If it’s been more than 5 days since you had unprotected sex and too late for EC, you can get a pregnancy test from a doctor or you can take a home pregnancy test. Home pregnancy tests are now just as effective as the tests available in a doctor’s office. There are many kinds available, and more expensive tests are not more accurate than those that are less expensive.

You do have to wait at least 10 days from unprotected sex for a pregnancy test to be effective, and it’s even more effective if you can wait until only a few days before your period is due. If you don’t track when your period normally comes, this can be hard to do. Most people see a period about every 28 days. The closer you can estimate, the more effective your test result will be.

A test from a doctor’s office is no more effective than a home test. If you prefer to seek one out anyway, you should avoid most places that advertise free pregnancy testing. Often called Pregnancy Resource Centers or Crisis Pregnancy Centers, these are offices typically run by volunteers of non-medical, often religious-based institutions that exist only to try to discourage people from choosing to have an abortion.

What time of day should I take a pregnancy test?

Most over-the-counter pregnancy tests work best if you use them with the first urine you pass in the morning, which is when your urine is most concentrated. These tests are looking for the presence of hCG or Human Chorionic Gonadotropin, a hormone produced during the onset of pregnancy.

Don’t forget; home pregnancy tests, aka HPTs, may not work if they are expired, or if you don’t follow the instructions. Before you take your test, remember to check the expiration date, and make sure you understand and follow the instructions. Be sure to read the test result only after waiting the time recommended in the test instructions. Never pick up a test after a few hours once it’s in the trash and read it again. Many tests will show a false positive result if left sitting long enough.

What if I get a negative pregnancy test result?

If you get a negative test result, but still believe you may be pregnant, wait a few days and take another test. You may want to avoid close sexual contact during this time.  If it has been more than 21 days since you had unprotected sex and your test is negative for pregnancy, you are not pregnant.

If you are still experiencing signs of pregnancy after a second negative test result and your period hasn’t returned, you may want to schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider. Remember, there are things other than pregnancy that can delay a period.

What if you find out you are pregnant?

If your home pregnancy test is positive, you may know right away what option is best for you. But if you don’t, that’s ok. Some people need to take more time to carefully weigh their options of abortion, adoption, or parenting a child. If you find you need to talk more about your options, there are several nonjudgmental resources but we recommend All Options, an organization dedicated to peer counseling and support.

If you are considering abortion, please be aware of the laws in your state, so you know of any limitations on how long you may have to choose an abortion. This varies widely across the US and from state-to-state. For more legal support options to you can reach out to Jane’s Due Process or If/When/How.

I missed my period and I don’t want to be pregnant.

Ok, we can help. First and foremost, take a deep breath and know you are not alone. Abortion is a common thing that 1 in 4 people who can get pregnant will experience in their reproductive lifetime. It’s a good idea to get as much information as soon as possible about your options. Reviewing our website or calling carafem is a great place to start.

Our staff will often start the call or ask online if you know the day your last period started. This is how we can date how far along you are in your pregnancy so we can provide you with abortion options specific to your needs. You can also access our website for information about choosing the abortion pill vs. an in-office abortion procedure.

carafem offers abortion pill care via secure video consultation as well as immediate evaluation, which does not require a video visit. Probability of a false negative pregnancy test if your period is 10 days late. What other reasons for the delay could there be?

Every girl wants to know for sure if she is really pregnant or if her period is late. However, our body does not always work exactly like a clock. Sometimes a delay may suggest that pregnancy may have come, but the test shows a negative result.

A 10-day delay in menstruation with a negative pregnancy test is a fairly common problem in girls. This situation seems strange, because With a delay in menstruation, we always think about pregnancy. But the reason may lie deeper.

Nowadays, our body is subject to various stresses and changes that can affect the menstrual cycle. Therefore, in order to understand the true reason for the delay in menstruation, it is necessary to consult a doctor and lead a healthy lifestyle.

How pregnancy tests work

Pregnancy tests are used to detect the presence of the human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) hormone in urine or blood. This hormone is produced by the female body after conception and increases with the normal course of pregnancy.

Urine or blood can be used for the test. An easier option is to use urine, for which you can use special test strips. They contain special sensitive elements that react to the presence of hCG in the urine.

To get a reliable result, it is necessary to use the test after a missed period. It is important to understand that the presence of a small amount of hCG can give a false result and even if there is a pregnancy, it will not give a positive result. This may be due to the individual characteristics of the female body, improper use of the test, or insufficient amount of hCG in the urine.

If a pregnancy test is negative for a missed period, but other symptoms of pregnancy still persist, it is important to repeat the test after a few days. You can also consult a gynecologist for more accurate and reliable pregnancy tests.

What does a 10-day delay in menstruation mean?

For many women, another lack of menstruation can cause anxiety. Especially if the delay lasts more than a week. However, a 10-day delay in menstruation does not always indicate pregnancy.

The main causes of delay can also be associated with severe stress, physical overstrain, hormonal imbalance and diseases of the genital organs. Therefore, if you are faced with a delay in menstruation for 10 days, it is recommended to contact a gynecologist who can identify the causes of the delay and prescribe the necessary treatment.

In addition, do not delay visiting a doctor if the delay in menstruation is accompanied by other unpleasant symptoms, such as burning or pain during urination, severe pain in the lower abdomen, redness and itching in the genital area.

  • Causes of a 10-day delay in menstruation:
  1. Stress and overexertion
  2. Hormonal disorders
  3. Diseases of the genital organs
  4. Overweight or rapid weight loss
  5. Taking certain medications

In any case, if your period is 10 days late, you should not panic and jump to conclusions about the possibility of pregnancy. It is recommended to contact an experienced specialist who can identify the causes of the delay and prescribe the necessary treatment.

Why can a pregnancy test result be false?

A negative pregnancy test result when your period is 10 days late can occur for several reasons. One of them is the incorrect use of the test. If you did not follow the instructions for using the test, the result may be false. For example, applying the test too early, using it incorrectly, or not matching the date of the test with the phase of the cycle can lead to an erroneous result.

Another reason for a false negative result may be low levels of the hormone hCG in the urine. Pregnancy tests work by detecting the level of the hormone hCG in the urine. However, in the first weeks of pregnancy, the level of this hormone may be low and therefore not detected by the test. This can lead to an unreliable result when conducting a test in the first weeks of pregnancy.

Also, the presence of certain medical conditions or the use of certain drugs can also affect the result of a pregnancy test. For example, a previous abortion, an ovarian cyst, an ectopic pregnancy, or the use of medications containing hormones can cause a false negative pregnancy test result.

  • Failure to follow directions
  • Low hCG levels in urine
  • Medical conditions or medications

False pregnancy test rates common ways to determine the presence or absence of pregnancy.

However, even with the most modern tests, false results are possible – when the test shows a negative result in a woman who is actually pregnant or vice versa.

False negative results when a woman receives a negative result meaning she is not pregnant, may occur if the woman is tested too early. In this case, the body has not yet had time to produce a sufficient amount of the hCG hormone, which is tested by a pregnancy test, and therefore the result will be incorrect.

False positive results when the test shows a positive result indicating pregnancy, although the woman is not pregnant, can also occur for several reasons: the presence of tumors or cysts, the use of certain drugs, abnormalities in the thyroid gland, or, for example, if test used incorrectly.

  • In general, the rate of false positives depends on the quality of the test itself and how well the woman used it.
  • If you suspect you are pregnant but your pregnancy test is negative, it is best to repeat the test in a few days or see your doctor for an examination.
  • Remember that pregnancy determination is best based on the results of an ultrasound or hCG blood test.

Causes of false pregnancy test results

Although pregnancy tests are considered quite reliable, they can give false results. A false result can be either positive or negative.

Causes of a false negative result

If a pregnancy test shows a negative result, but menstruation has not occurred for 10 days, the following reasons are possible:

  • Low hCG in the urine. This hormone is present in the body only during pregnancy, but its level in the urine may not be sufficient for early detection.
  • Wrong test date. If the test is done too early or too late, it may give a false result.
  • Violation of instructions for use of the test. If the test is not used in accordance with the instructions, there is a risk of getting an incorrect result.
  • Violation of the test storage rules. If the test was stored in the wrong conditions, it may give an incorrect result.

Causes of a false positive

If a pregnancy test is positive but not actually pregnant, the following may be the cause:

  • Taking certain medicines containing hCG.
  • Kidney problems that lead to an increase in the level of hCG in the urine.
  • Violation of instructions for use of the test. If the test is used incorrectly, it may give an incorrect result.
  • Certain diseases, such as ovarian tumors or bladder cancer, can cause hCG to appear in the urine.

What should I do if my pregnancy test shows a negative result when my period is 10 days late?

Delayed periods are the first symptom of pregnancy, but sometimes other illnesses can be hidden behind the delay. If a pregnancy test shows a negative result, it does not mean that you are not pregnant. In this case, you need to check with a doctor to rule out the possibility of another disease that can lead to the absence of menstruation.

In case of missed period and negative pregnancy test, other pregnancy tests can be tried, preferably every few days. But the best option is to consult a gynecologist and undergo tests.

Some causes of missed periods are stress, nervous disorders, lifestyle changes, sudden weight gain or loss. Solve all the problems that arise and take care of your body.

If the delay in menstruation recurs, then it is necessary to contact a gynecologist for a detailed analysis. The gynecologist will prescribe special tests that will help identify the cause of the delay and give practical recommendations so that everything happens faster and safer.

In addition, there is no need to panic and make diagnoses on your own, all problems should be solved by a doctor, since such symptoms can also mean other diseases that you need to protect your body from.

Reasons for a 10-day delay in menstruation: what can this mean?

What other symptoms may accompany a delay in menstruation?

In addition to the absence of menstruation, a delay in menstruation may be accompanied by various symptoms:

  • Pain in the lower abdomen They can be of different intensity and character – from sharp to dull.
  • Vaginal discharge – white, yellow, green or gray – may indicate a hormonal imbalance or an infection in the body.
  • Changes in appetite and drowsiness – a delay in menstruation can affect overall well-being, causing fatigue and drowsiness, or affect appetite, which can greatly affect mood.
  • Goosebumps and pain in the chest – changes in the hormonal background of the body can lead to pain and discomfort in this area of the body.

If you have at least one of these symptoms, you should contact a specialist for advice and find out the reasons for the delay in menstruation.

When to see a doctor

After a negative pregnancy test if your period is missed

If your period was 10 days late and you took a pregnancy test that came back negative but you keep noticing any changes in your body (for example, fever, severe pain or bleeding), you should immediately consult a doctor.

The reason for the delay in menstruation can be not only pregnancy, but also various diseases (for example, gynecological problems, thyroid problems, and others), which can be maintained without treatment, fraught with serious health consequences.

  • If your condition continues to worsen (eg fever, severe pain, etc.), do not postpone your visit to the doctor.
  • If menstruation is delayed regularly, accompanied by painful sensations or no cycle at all, you should also visit a doctor to determine the cause of the violation and begin treatment.

In any case, if you notice a change in your body that worries you, do not postpone your visit to the doctor and get qualified help as soon as possible.

What methods help to establish an accurate diagnosis

Pregnancy detection methods

  • Pregnancy test. The very first method that is used to determine the presence or absence of pregnancy. The tests are available in pharmacies and stores and do not require special preparation. They work by detecting the hCG hormone in the urine and are quite accurate in the lab and when used correctly.
  • Ultrasound. An ultrasound examination by a doctor will help determine the presence of a fetus in the uterus and the approximate time of pregnancy.
  • Blood test for hormones. Determination of the level of certain hormones can help determine the presence of pregnancy.

Possible causes of a negative test when menstruation is missed

  • Incorrect use of a pregnancy test. Excessive dilution of the test or use after the specified time may lead to a false result.
  • Insufficiently high level of hCG in the urine at the beginning of pregnancy, due to which the test may give a false result.
  • Problems with matching ovulation days and delayed periods, which can lead to an incorrect time for a pregnancy test.

What to do if the test is negative and menstruation does not start

  • Visit a doctor and undergo an additional examination.
  • Get a blood test for hormones and an ultrasound of the uterus to check for a fetus.
  • Pay attention to other symptoms of pregnancy such as nausea and fatigue and tell your doctor.

What can interfere with the accurate diagnosis of pregnancy

To accurately diagnose pregnancy, it is necessary to conduct a special test that will determine the presence or absence of the main pregnancy hormone – hCG in the woman’s urine. However, there are several factors that can affect the accuracy of the result.

  • Test too early . If the test is performed earlier than the time of the onset of menstruation, then its result may be incorrect. It is better to wait a few days after a missed period to increase the chances of an accurate result.
  • Incorrect use of test . If the instructions for using the test are not followed, the test result may not be accurate. You must follow the instructions and use only qualitative tests to get a reliable result.
  • Menstrual disorders . A woman may have an irregular cycle, a change in the duration of her period, a miscarriage, or other reasons that may affect the result of the test. In such cases, women are advised to have multiple pregnancy tests at regular intervals to increase the likelihood of an accurate result.
  • Medications . Some medicines can affect the result of a pregnancy test. If a woman is taking any medication, she should definitely consult a doctor before starting a pregnancy test.
  • Physical factors . Physical activity, stress, overwork, illness and other factors can affect the result of a pregnancy test. A woman should be completely rested and follow a normal daily routine to rule out physical factors that could affect the test result.

Delayed menstruation after an abortion – Clinic “Narvskaya” St. Petersburg

Gynecology

Contents

Any termination of pregnancy is a serious stress for a woman, both from a psychological point of view and from a physiological point of view. And although medical abortion is considered as gentle as possible, the body still needs time to recover and start working normally. Therefore, it is not surprising that 40 percent of women complain of such a condition as a delay in menstruation after a medical abortion.

Contents

Why is my period delayed after a pharmacist?

First of all, it is necessary to understand how the menstrual cycle should be calculated after the abortion. All previous dates can be forgotten, the day of the abortion is now considered the first day of the cycle, or rather, the onset of bleeding.

The menstrual cycle is determined by changes in the hormonal background, which can change dramatically after an abortion. A double restructuring of all systems (after conception and after an abortion) does not go in vain for the body. Therefore, even with a favorable development of events, a delay of 7-10 days in the first cycle is considered normal.

We should also expect some delays in the next 2-7 months. In addition, many women say that after an abortion their cycle has slightly increased, which is sometimes mistaken for a delay.

But a change in the hormonal background is not the only reason that can cause a delay in menstruation after a pharmaceutical abortion, there are others:

  • Psychological stress . In women who react sharply to stress, it may well begin to delay precisely because of a nervous shock.
  • Inflammatory process . If, as a result of an abortion, the fetal egg is not completely released, uterine inflammation may begin, which will cause a delay.
  • Pregnancy. In 2-4% of cases, drugs do not cause abortion and the pregnancy continues. If after an abortion there were unprotected intercourse, they can cause a new pregnancy.

The combination of these factors causes a delay after an abortion. But its duration, as well as the period for which the cycle will be restored, depends on the body.

What to do if menstruation is delayed after an abortion

If the delay after an abortion has already been 6-7 days, it is necessary to take a pregnancy test and, preferably, a blood test for hCG.

Centers, Group Homes, and Licensed Family Homes::

In 2014, legislation was passed that changed the number of unannounced visits from two per year to one per year in Child Care Centers, Group Child Care Homes, and Licensed Family Child Care Homes. As a result of this new law, you may see a decrease in the number of deficiencies listed on this website for these types of providers. Unannounced visits are still made in response to a complaint, and visits are scheduled with the facility during the re-licensing process, which occurs every two years.

Registered Family Homes:

Most family homes are registered, not licensed. In 2014, legislation was passed that allows Child Care Licensing to make one unannounced visit to these homes each year. As a result of this new law, you may see an increase in the number of deficiencies listed on this website for Registered Family Child Care Homes. Unannounced visits are still made in response to a complaint. Click here for an overview of each facility and the requirements they must meet according to state law.

Infant child care cost near me: Cost of Care – Child Care Aware MN

Cost of child care shuts out many who need it most, leaves workers behind

Two Oregon proposals to invest public money in early learning would change the trajectory of children living in poverty and increase earning potential of child care workers and parents

Few investments in the lives of low-income and at-risk children have the proven ability to brighten young futures as much as quality preschool.

As Street Roots examines what it will take to prevent today’s youths from becoming the next generation of people living in extreme poverty, access to early learning opportunities stands out as crucial to achieving this goal.

While it’s no secret early childhood learning opportunities could set today’s most vulnerable youths on a better trajectory, preschool remains out of reach for most 3- and 4-year-old Oregonians. Now, as state and federal investments in early learning continue to fall short, backers of two separate initiatives promising universal preschool are hashing out a plan to put before Multnomah County voters in November.

Privately run early education in Oregon, as well as in many other parts of the country, has become a luxury that only the most affluent can comfortably afford.

Meanwhile, earnings of workers in the industry are at or near minimum wage.

Growing Seeds Learning Community preschools in Portland illustrate this trend well.

Tuition for five days a week among the company’s three centers ranges from $1,310 to $1,705 a month, depending on age. Workers at Growing Seeds, who teach children ages 6 weeks to 6 years a curriculum often focused on social justice, earn about $14 to $18 an hour and are offered health insurance that workers told Street Roots many cannot afford.

“At least half the employees pick up babysitting gigs on the side and make more after putting the kids to sleep and watching TV than they do in the classroom,” Growing Seeds employee Nat Glitsch said.

These conditions prompted unionizing efforts among staff, including Glitsch, who sits on the union organizing committee, but the gap between worker pay and tuition at Growing Seeds is far from unique in the Portland metro area.

Oregon is the fourth-least-affordable state for preschool in the nation, according to a Multnomah County task force report released in September, with the average preschool tuition costing substantially more than the annual tuition at the state’s public universities.

Meanwhile, the median preschool teacher is making less than $14 an hour and many early learning educators can’t afford pre-K classroom exposure for their own children.

And it’s not just preschool. Child care for a toddler at a center (as opposed to in-home child care) in the Portland metro area would take, on average, 65% of a full-time minimum-wage worker’s annual income in 2018, according to research from Oregon State University.

The high cost of child care and the housing crisis have combined into a perfect storm that’s pushing working-class Oregonians over a financial cliff.

“What we hear from families is that it’s housing or child care right now. It’s one or the other, but they can’t afford both,” Miriam Calderon, the Early Learning Systems director at Oregon Department of Education, told Street Roots.

And even when parents can afford the high cost of care — or are low-income enough to apply for subsidized care — it’s scarce. There are three or more preschool-age children for every available slot in 25 of Oregon’s 36 counties, according to a report from OSU’s Oregon Child Care Research Partnership. The report’s author, Megan Pratt, told Street Roots, “Providers can charge higher prices because there is such a demand, that there is somebody out there who will pay it.”

She said some providers ask for cash only, because they can in the current high-demand environment, but cash-only “is really a disadvantage for our most vulnerable populations who are relying on the child care subsidy.”

The scarcity of available slots Ren Johns faced when trying to find care for her infant daughter five years ago prompted Johns and her husband to create the PDX Waitlist website (pdxwaitlist. com) to help parents navigate Portland’s competitive child care market. In addition to operating the site, Johns, who is also a high school math teacher, offers a premium service of locating child care or preschool slots for parents who don’t have the time and know-how to do it on their own. With all her prowess, she said it still takes her about a month or two to locate a market-rate, five-day-a-week infant care slot, which is about $1,250 a month, on short notice.

“But most of what I find is more in the $1,500 to $1,800 range,” she said, adding that if Portland parents want to pay less than $1,250 a month, they will likely have to find a small, unlicensed in-home provider.

“It’s really clear to me that we have problems at every level,” Johns said. “We don’t have enough supply, the majority of the supply we have is unaffordable, it’s hard for most people to find it, it’s incredibly opaque as to whether something is quality or not, and in general, we have mediocre quality across the board. We have some incredible providers, and we have some really unsafe ones. For an average parent, to put in the time to figure all that out is quite daunting.”

It’s substantially more difficult for parents of children with special needs such as autism or insulin requirements. There are very few providers who will serve those children, she said.

OVER THE PAST TWO DECADES, a large body of research has emerged showing early-education programs like Head Start can reduce a child’s likeliness of incarceration and unemployment in adulthood while increasing the likelihood of high school graduation, college enrollment and better health outcomes. And now, some of the newest research shows preschool can actually disrupt the intergenerational cycle of poverty.

James Heckman, Nobel laureate and economics professor and researcher at the University of Chicago, revisited the at-risk preschool subjects of his earlier research — which greatly influenced early childhood education today — as older adults. What he discovered was that not only were gains made in their personal outcomes, such as marriage stability, but also in the outcomes of their children.

In a paper released in May, Heckman and his co-author found a substantial decrease in high school suspensions, criminal involvement and substance use disorder among the children of those original preschoolers when compared with a control group living in similar low-income neighborhoods. They were also more likely to be gainfully employed.

Heckman’s earlier work produced what’s known as the Heckman Equation, which found investing in a child’s preschool education yields a return on investment of 7% to 10%. More recently, he discovered investment in quality education starting even earlier — at birth — and up to age 5, bumps the societal return on investment up to 13%, emphasizing the importance of early education throughout a child’s first 2,000 days of life.

But most regional governments in the U.S. aren’t funding early education the way they fund K-12, and while subsidized slots are available, many vulnerable kids first experience a classroom setting in kindergarten.

Those kids often have a harder time adjusting to kindergarten and can exhibit behavioral problems that negatively affect the entire classroom, said Suzanne Cohen, president of the Portland Association of Teachers.

“Nationally and statewide, and certainly in Portland, we’ve seen high incidents of disrupted learning,” Cohen said. “It can be throwing, kicking, punching, biting, and this takes place in the younger grades. And very often, it can be a child that didn’t have a preschool opportunity.”

She pointed to a report from Oregon Education Association released last year, titled “A Crisis of Disrupted Learning.”

Among other factors, the study noted that educators reported students who had access to high-quality preschool and early education programs entered kindergarten more prepared in regard to their social and emotional health and their academics.

Hearing about the possibility of universal preschool in Multnomah County brought tears to the eyes of some kindergarten and first-grade teachers working for Portland Public Schools, Cohen said.

EARLY-LEARNING EXPERTS Street Roots interviewed for this story agreed: It’s impossible for quality preschool to be affordable for all families without public funding — especially if preschool teachers and their support staff are paid living wages.

“The economics don’t work out,” Calderon said. “If there isn’t a financing strategy, far too many families will be pushed into lower-quality environments or have to make really, really difficult choices for their families, in order to work.”

But with prices in excess of $1,000 a month per child, where does all the money go?

“Child care businesses run on very small margins,” said Pratt, who studies child care costs and pricing at Oregon State University. She said most of the revenue goes “straight to their employees, who are not making a lot.”

About 70% of revenue pays for labor, and in Oregon, labor can cost more than other states due to laws requiring a lower ratio of children to caregivers: one adult for every four infants and toddlers or for every 10 preschoolers.

“It’s really a conundrum,” Pratt said. “It takes a lot of human labor.”

Add insurance costs, high rents, licensing fees and in many cases thousands of dollars for conditional-use permits in residential zones, the cost of supplies and other business expenses like employee benefits and janitorial services, and there isn’t a whole lot left over.

Pratt said expenses mirror those of grade school; the only difference is it isn’t receiving the same level of state and federal support.

The low supply versus the high demand in Oregon then drives prices even higher. Meanwhile, wages haven’t kept pace with child care rates, which have more than doubled for most ages and types of care over the past two decades.

“It’s an issue that’s affecting our most vulnerable populations, absolutely, but it doesn’t stop there. It affects nearly everyone,” Pratt said. “ I know personally, I work and my husband stays home, because financially that makes the most sense.”

But has child care always been this expensive? Pratt said one theory on cost increases could be related to the shift of attention to regulated, center-based care, and due to the cultural shift to more dual-earning parents and single parents.

“This is an industry that women have subsidized with their low wages,” said Calderon, of Oregon’s Early Learning Division. She also noted that those women have been “primarily low-income women and women of color and immigrant women.”

AS DIRE AS Oregon’s child care landscape is, momentum to expand preschool and quality care for infants and toddlers is building.

Increased federal funding in the form of block grants has recently helped Oregon and other states expand access to include additional low-income families. And in 2019, the Oregon Legislature made an investment of $200 million per year that will go toward funding more than 1,000 slots for infants and toddlers in Early Head Start and support additional slots for preschoolers, including culturally specific opportunities, and to ensure services for kids in the state’s Early Childhood Special Education programs with the Student Success Act.

Additionally, Oregon’s Early Learning Council, which the Legislature created in 2011 and is charged with coordinating a unified and accessible system of early learning, has created a strategic plan for expanding birth-to-5 opportunities across Oregon.

Calderon credits Oregon’s past and present governors, John Kitzhaber and Kate Brown, for making early learning a priority.

But, she said, even with these combined investments and existing programs, “we still fall short of meeting the eligible families that would qualify.”

She’s referring to families across Oregon who earn 200% of the federal poverty level or less. Her department estimates Oregon will fall short roughly 20,000 slots for preschool children in these low-income families, “who still won’t have access,” she said.

For access to be fully available, Calderon said, it will take a combination of federal, state and local funding efforts. And she should know — she played a key role in implementing universal preschool in Washington, D.C., before coming to Oregon. Now, she said, 80% of 3-year-olds and 90% of 4-year-olds in the District of Columbia are enrolled in publicly funded preschool. She said this has led to better outcomes in K-12, narrowed disparities in achievement and an increase in women’s participation in the workforce, which benefits entire families.

“I believe that this is possible. It is possible to do this,” she said.

IN MULTNOMAH COUNTY, two separate initiatives for universal preschool are underway. Both seek to increase workforce wages drastically, expand access to all 3- and 4-year-olds in the county by investing in new and existing providers, and pay for it by taxing the rich.

The Universal Preschool NOW! campaign is aligned with Portland DSA (Democratic Socialists of America), and Portland Association of Teachers President Suzanne Cohen is one of the chief petitioners. Its plan aims for 80% participation after a 5-year roll-out beginning with high-need neighborhoods and paid for with a 3.9% tax on the county’s top 5% of earners — individuals making $200,000 or more and couples making $225,000 or more.

COMMENTARY: The real impact of universal preschool and a tax on the 5%

The other preschool initiative, Preschool for All, is the result of a county task force that’s been studying the issue since 2017. Leading the effort, County Commissioner Jessica Vega Pederson said the main difference between her initiative and the one brought forth by Universal Preschool Now! is the deep community-based work and engagement that went into creating her proposal.

Multnomah County Commissioner Jessica Vega Pederson leads the preschool initiative Preschool for All. A county task force has been studying the issue since 2017.

Vega Pederson said the task force’s conclusions take into consideration work force, infrastructure, finance and administrative needs and draw from the perspectives of not only parents, but also people with housing, health care, business and philanthropy expertise.

“And that’s a huge difference. That there’s been a lot of thought put into what it would take to make a preschool program in Multnomah County that reflects the needs of families.”

Vega Pederson’s Preschool for All campaign’s polling suggests voters would be most favorable toward a tax of 1% on household incomes above $500,000 per year, but she has not committed to a specific tax rate just yet.

Preschool for All would also roll out at a slower, undisclosed pace.

“In the first five years, eight years, you can’t get to 100% just because of the pipeline: the workforce needs and the provider needs,” she said. Her task force estimates an additional 2,300 preschool workers would be needed.

“So ultimately, we want to get to it, but we want to grow out the program in a smart and realistic way.”

She said coming back to voters with a larger ask once the program has been proved is the best way to get there.

Backers behind the two initiatives are involved in ongoing discussions as they attempt to merge their proposals into a single measure to put before voters this fall. Neither side wants to see two competing universal preschool measures on the same ballot.

“We’ve had some really good conversations,” Vega Pederson said. “We have lot of things that are shared in common.”

The Preschool for All task force estimated an additional 260 classrooms would be needed for all of the county’s approximately 19,000 preschool-age children to attend preschool.

Teachers with Preschool for All students in their classrooms would need to be paid on par with kindergarten teachers, and support staff would have to be paid a minimum of $18 an hour. These pay floors were also set by the Universal Preschool Now! campaign.

Cohen worries that the county’s plan of subsidizing classroom slots for low-income kids but not others would inadvertently segregate students based on class.

“I think we’d definitely want to provide opportunities for the kids who don’t have access to preschool right now, to have that access,” Vega Pederson said, “but that doesn’t mean that they’re going to have separate classrooms. It’s actually providing additional capacity at existing providers so that they can be a part of the existing classrooms.”

Research examining Head Start programs has shown children in poverty and who are otherwise at risk gain the most from attending preschool. While it can benefit all children, it can have a life-altering impact on at-risk kids who begin kindergarten vulnerable to disciplinary and academic barriers due to racial and class inequities.

In Multnomah County, there are a lot of kids who fall into this category, according to the Preschool for All task force’s findings.

Nineteen percent of preschool-age children in Multnomah County are living in families with incomes under the federal poverty level. That’s $25,100 for a family of four. Access to preschool could also be potentially life changing for the 66% of the region’s preschool-age children in families that are Hispanic/Latino, African American, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, American Native or Alaska Native, Asian and Slavic that are living below 200% of the federal poverty level.

But only 15% of preschoolers in Multnomah County are receiving a subsidized preschool education, leaving most parents with few affordable options.

UNTIL SIGNIFICANT PUBLIC FUNDING is used to subsidize child care, parents can expect continued high-price child care and preschool tuitions across the board — prices that force even financially secure families into making difficult decisions.

For Lee Ann Moyer, who was working as a speech pathologist at a local hospital, child care was at one point costing her family close to $2,500 a month, with two of her kids attending Growing Seeds and one in elementary school with before- and after-school care.

“We actually just looked at our numbers and said this doesn’t make any sense,” she said. “So I pulled my kids out and had them in there a couple days a week, left my full-time job and took a different path so that I could be home with them more and not have everything I made be sent to some version of child care.” Now, Moyer is the owner of Portland Moms Blog and runs an event space in North Portland.

Another local mom who spoke with Street Roots on condition of anonymity said she left a higher-paying profession to work in child care just so she could get the discount for her own children. Now, she works at Kindercare, which charges non-employees close to $1,800 a month for full-time toddler care, and earns about $2 more than minimum wage. She said she often purchases needed classroom supplies out of her own pocket, although she is not required to do so. And while the career change has come at a cost savings to her family, she believes it has put her career ambitions and long-term earning potential in jeopardy.

ON WEDNESDAY, MARCH 11, Growing Seeds employees across the company’s three locations voted in favor of joining Portland’s International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 5. The results showed 90% to 100% of staff at each location voted in  favor of unionizing, despite ramped-up discouragement from ownership just 36 hours before the vote.

Despite fears that higher wages could result in increased tuition, many parents had been supportive of their efforts, organizers told Street Roots. Some even sent their children to preschool wearing little pro-union buttons on their shirts.

“Kids are full humans that deserve respect and good treatment,” said Kate Stubblefield, Growing Seeds employee and union organizer, “and the people that care for those children and are responsible for those children deserve that also.

RI Child Care Costs More Than Rent, In-State Tuition: Report

    Politics & Government

About a fifth of a median family income in Rhode Island goes to child care, the Economic Policy Institute said.

    Mike Carraggi, Patch Staff

Child care costs in Rhode Island are crippling for many families. (Mike Carraggi/Patch)

Child care isn’t cheap in Rhode Island, and it’s a problem compounded by relatively low earning power in the Ocean State. A new report from the Economic Policy Institute said infant care costs about a fifth of the median family income.

The EPI said it costs $13,696 a year – or $1,141 a month – to get infant care in Rhode Island. That makes it the 13th most expensive state in the country; Massachusetts is the most expensive at $20,913 and Washington D.C. is $24,243.

Child care for two children – an infant and a 4-year-old – costs $24,383 in Rhode Island, the EPI said.

Find out what’s happening in Newportwith free, real-time updates from Patch.

The cost is exacerbated by Rhode Island residents’ earning power. The median family income is $66,928, so 20.5 percent of that goes to infant care, one of the highest marks in the nation. Conversely, it costs a comparable $12,791 in New Hampshire for child care, but that’s just 15.3 percent of the median family income.

By U.S. Department of Health and Human Service standards, infant care is only affordable for 6.6 percent of Rhode Island families. Those families likely don’t include a minimum-wage worker: the EPI said a minimum-wage worker would need to work 33 full-time weeks straight just to pay for infant care.

Find out what’s happening in Newportwith free, real-time updates from Patch.

Annual infant care costs in Rhode Island costs more than a year’s rent ($11,764) and a year’s in-state tuition at a four-year public college ($12,239.) Rhode Island is one of 33 states where child care costs more than a year at such a college.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren in February announced a universal child care plan early in her presidential campaign. Warren’s plan would cap child care costs at 7 percent of a family’s income until a child reaches school age. Families with incomes more than 200 percent below the poverty line wouldn’t have to pay for child care at all.

“In the wealthiest country on the planet, access to affordable and high-quality child care and early education should be a right, not a privilege reserved for the rich,” Warren said in February.

EPI said if that percentage was capped at 7 percent for families, it would save them $8,685 per year. That would free up more than 5,000 parents to work, expanding the Rhode Island economy by more than $500 million, according to the report.

13 pros and cons of working as a customer service representative • BUOM

    December 2, 2021

Customer Service Representatives perform a variety of tasks to assist customers and solve their problems. These professionals work in a variety of industries, and they often fill entry-level positions. Understanding the potential advantages and disadvantages of this position can help you determine if it is a good career choice for you. In this article, we will discuss 13 pros and cons of working as a customer service representative.

    9Benefits of Customer Service

Here are some benefits of working as a customer service rep:

    1. Access Entry Level Jobs

Many customer service jobs offer entry level positions. This makes them attractive to people looking for their first job. It also allows people to move into new industries or easily change career paths and learn more about a particular industry or organization. It is important to demonstrate enthusiasm for the job in order to succeed during the transition.

    2. Develop problem solving skills may collide.

It is important to be able to offer a solution that satisfies the client and is consistent with company policy. This allows you to practice and develop your problem-solving skills by finding suitable solutions, especially when clients have unique situations. In addition, problem-solving skills often apply to all other types of professional roles.

    3. Develop interpersonal skills

Customer service representatives work directly with others, especially with customers who may be feeling frustrated. This job requires excellent interpersonal skills, that is, the skills necessary to understand the feelings of other people in order to respond correctly and create a good relationship with them. Meeting new people on a regular basis allows customer service reps to better assess how customers might respond or what they might need to respond best and determine how to meet their needs.

    4. Earn bonuses and commissions

Some customer service representatives have the opportunity to earn bonuses or commissions in addition to their base salary. For example, some organizations may reward representatives for selling additional products or services to customers, or for encouraging customers to sign up for a credit card or company-specific rewards program. However, it is important to remember that these opportunities may vary by industry, type of customer service job, and organization.

    5. Explore Growth Opportunities

Working as a Help Desk Representative is often a good entry-level position with opportunities to grow and move to other roles both internally and externally. For example, success as a customer service representative can demonstrate your value and skills to others in your organization by demonstrating your potential for internal promotion. Conversely, customer service reps often have versatile skills that help them excel in other external roles.

    6. Learn about the product or service

Becoming a customer service representative usually requires you to become an expert on your organization’s products and services. This is important to be able to best serve as a subject matter expert and solve customer problems. Learning about products or services can be fun, and sharing knowledge about them can be helpful in developing additional skills.

    7. Participate in workplace learning

Many organizations provide you with on-the-job training. This will help you properly prepare for the job and make sure you agree with the requirements of the job. Workplace learning also allows you to learn more about the organization and how you can apply your previous experience and skills on the job.

    8. Get Well Paid

The average salary for a Help Desk Representative nationwide is $13.95 an hour. Exact wage rates may vary based on factors such as geographic location, specific employer and job, experience and qualifications. However, this average rate is higher than the federal minimum wage, which is $7.25 an hour.

    9. Work from home

Some organizations allow their customer service representatives to work remotely. This allows you to help customers by phone, online chat, or email rather than in person. Working from home can give you more flexibility and help you save money on commuting. However, it is important to remember that these capabilities vary by industry and organization.

4 Cons of Being a Customer Service Representative

Here are some of the cons of being a Customer Service Representative:

    1. Experience burnout and stress

Working as a customer service representative requires you to maintain a friendly demeanor at all times, no matter how customers behave or how you feel. This can be difficult to deal with, especially if you have a lot of problem clients on the same shift. As a result, you may feel frazzled at work or stressed out helping clients. However, you may have more friendly clients than unfriendly ones, which will balance your work day and help you feel satisfied with your work.

    2. Deal with frequent changes

Service desk representatives often deal with frequent changes in policies, procedures, products, and services. This requires constant learning of new things and often includes the first point of contact for customers if they are frustrated by the change. However, constant change can help keep your work interesting, especially if you learn new things often.

    3. You Have Many Responsibilities

Many customer service representatives have significant responsibilities in their organization for helping customers and ensuring customer satisfaction. For some, it can be stressful to try and balance the level of responsibility and workload. However, having this amount of responsibility can allow you to face new challenges and further develop your customer service skills. You can also experience a sense of satisfaction from solving a difficult problem or from a client being satisfied with the outcome.

    4. Work irregular hours

Many customer service jobs are in industries where hours of work are outside the regular workweek or standard business hours. This may require customer service representatives to work evenings, weekends, and holidays, and they may receive different schedules each week.

A Guide for First-Time Parents (for Parents)

Life has changed now that your baby is here, and you might have lots of questions about what to do. These tips can help first-time parents feel confident about caring for a newborn in no time.

How Do I Get Help After My Baby Comes Home?

An important part of caring for a newborn is to also take care of yourself. Consider getting help during this time, which can feel hectic and a bit overwhelming.

Relatives and friends might want to help. Even if you disagree on some things, their own experiences might be helpful.

To keep your baby healthy, anyone handling your little one should be up to date on their vaccines and help only if they feel well. But if you don’t feel up to having guests or have other concerns, don’t feel guilty about limiting visitors.

How Do I Handle My Baby?

If you haven’t spent a lot of time around newborns, they may seem very fragile. Here are a few basics to remember:

    • Wash your hands (or use a hand sanitizer) before handling your baby. Newborns don’t have a strong immune system yet, so they’re at risk for infections. Make sure that everyone who handles your baby has clean hands.
    • Support your baby’s head and neck. Cradle the head when carrying your baby. And support the head when carrying the baby upright or when you lay your baby down.
    • Never shake your baby, whether in play or in frustration. Shaking can cause bleeding in the brain and sometimes death. If you need to wake your baby, don’t do it by shaking. Instead, tickle your baby’s feet or blow gently on a cheek.
    • Always fasten your baby securely when using a carrier, stroller, or car seat. Limit any activity that could be too rough or bouncy.
    • Avoid rough play with newborns, such as jiggling them on the knee or throwing them in the air.

How Can I Bond With My Baby?

Bonding happens during the first hours and days after birth when parents make a deep connection with their child. Physical closeness can help form an emotional link and help your baby develop in other ways. Another way to think of bonding is “falling in love” with your baby. Kids thrive from having a parent or other adult in their life who loves them unconditionally.

Begin bonding by cradling and gently stroking your baby in different patterns. Another good technique is skin-to-skin contact (also called kangaroo care), where you hold your newborn against your own chest. This helps calm and soothe babies and regulate their heartbeat. It’s a good practice for moms or dads to do.

Here’s how to do skin-to-skin contact with your baby:

    • Avoid using scented perfumes or lotions and stay away from cigarette smoke beforehand.
    • Find a comfortable seat in a dimly-lit room. Wear a shirt that opens in the front. Lay your baby in just a diaper on your bare chest.
    • Sit quietly, talk softly, hum, sing, or read aloud. Your baby may sleep during this time.

    How Can Soothe My Baby?

Helping babies relax can help them feel happier and more comfortable. Here are some tips on soothing your baby.

Massage: Infant massage may help babies, especially those who were born early or have medical problems. Some types of massage may enhance bonding and help babies grow and develop. Many books and videos cover infant massage — ask your doctor for recommendations. Be careful, though — babies aren’t as strong as adults, so massage your baby gently.

Sounds: Babies usually love vocal sounds, such as talking, babbling, singing, and cooing. Your baby will probably enjoy listening to soft music. Baby rattles and musical mobiles are other good ways to stimulate your infant’s hearing. If your little one is fussy, try singing, reciting poetry and nursery rhymes, or reading aloud as you sway or rock your baby gently in a chair.

Some babies can be unusually sensitive to touch, light, or sound. They might startle and cry easily, sleep less than expected, or turn their faces away when someone speaks or sings to them. If that’s the case with your baby, keep noise and light levels low to medium.

Swaddling: Another soothing technique is swaddling, which works well for some babies during their first few weeks. Proper swaddling keeps a baby’s arms close to the body while allowing their legs to move a bit. It keeps a baby warm, and it seems to give most newborns a sense of security and comfort. Swaddling also may help limit the startle reflex, which can wake a baby.

Here’s how to swaddle your baby:

    • Spread out a baby blanket with one corner folded over slightly.
    • Lay the baby face-up on the blanket with their head above the folded corner.
    • Wrap the left corner over the baby’s body and tuck it beneath the back, going under the right arm.
    • Bring the bottom corner up over the baby’s feet and pull it toward their head, folding the fabric down if it gets close to your baby’s face. Don’t wrap too tightly around the hips. The hips and knees should be slightly bent and turned out. Wrapping your baby too tightly may increase their risk for hip dysplasia (dis-PLAY-zhuh).
    • Wrap the right corner around your baby, and tuck it under their back on the left side, leaving only the neck and head exposed. To make sure your baby isn’t wrapped too tightly, make sure you can slip a hand between the blanket and your baby’s chest. This will allow comfortable breathing. But make sure that the blanket isn’t so loose that it could come undone.
    • Stop swaddling when your baby shows signs of starting to roll over. That’s usually around 2 months. At this age, some babies can roll over while swaddled, which puts them at risk for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

How Do I Diaper My Baby?

Whether you use cloth or disposable diapers, your little one will dirty them about 10 times a day, which is about 70 times a week. When diapering your baby:

    • Have all the supplies you need within reach.
    • Wipe your baby front to back gently using water, cotton balls, and a washcloth or wipes.
    • Apply diaper cream if needed to treat diaper rash.
    • Wash your hands after changing the diaper.

When Should I Bathe My Baby?

For the first few weeks, babies get sponge baths. Then, after the umbilical cord stump falls off and the circumcision heals (if your baby was circumcised), babies can have baths in a sink or small plastic infant tub.

When your baby is ready for tub baths, the first ones should be gentle and brief. If your baby gets upset, go back to sponge baths for a week or two, then try the tub bath again. A bath two or three times a week in the first year is fine. More frequent bathing may be drying to the baby’s skin.

How Do I Care for the Umbilical Cord and Circumcision Area?

    • Umbilical cord care: Clean around the cord stump with plain water and blot dry until the stump dries up and falls off, usually in 10 days to 3 weeks. Don’t let the belly button area soak in water until the stump falls off and the area heals. Before the cord stump falls off, it will change color from yellow to brown or black — this is normal. Call your doctor if the area looks red, has a bad odor, or has discharge.
    • Circumcision care: After a circumcision, doctors usually put petroleum jelly on the tip of the baby’s penis and cover it with gauze to keep the wound from sticking to the diaper. At each diaper change, gently wipe the tip clean with warm water (not a baby wipe), then apply petroleum jelly and gauze. Penis redness or irritation should heal within a few days to a week. But call your baby’s doctor right away if it gets worse or if pus-filled blisters form. These can be signs of an infection.

How Often Should I Feed My Baby?

Whether feeding your newborn by breast or a bottle, you may wonder how often to do so. Generally, it’s recommended that babies be fed on demand — that is, whenever they seem hungry. Your baby may show you they’re hungry by crying, putting fingers in their mouth, or making sucking noises. A newborn baby needs to be fed every 2–3 hours.

Breastfed babies are probably getting enough to eat if they:

    • seem satisfied
    • have about 6 wet diapers and several poops a day
    • sleep well
    • gain weight regularly

Another good way to tell if a breastfed baby is getting milk is to notice if your breasts feel full before feeding your baby and less full after feeding. If you’re formula-feeding, you can easily see if your baby is getting enough to eat. Talk with your doctor if you have concerns about your baby’s growth or feeding schedule.

Babies often swallow air during feedings, which can make them fussy. To help prevent this, burp your baby often.

What Should I Know About My Baby’s Sleep?

You may be surprised to learn that newborns sleep about 16 hours or more. They typically sleep for periods of 2–4 hours. Many babies sleep through the night (between 6–8 hours) at 3 months of age, but if yours doesn’t, it’s not a cause for concern. Like adults, babies develop their own sleep patterns and cycles.

Always place babies on their back to sleep to lower their risk of SIDS. Other safe sleeping practices include:

    • not using blankets, quilts, sheepskins, bumpers, stuffed animals, or pillows in the crib or bassinet because they can suffocate a baby
    • parents sharing a bedroom (but not a bed) with the baby for the first 6 months to 1 year

Change the position of your baby’s head from night to night (first right, then left, and so on). This helps prevent a flat spot from developing on one side of the head.

Before long, you’ll have a routine and be parenting like a pro. If you have questions or concerns, talk with your doctor. They can recommend resources that can help.

Newborn care | Valenia Health Services

    GOOD HOUR, PARENTS!!!

These simple tips will help you take care of your baby and help you understand some aspects of a newborn’s life.

    UMBILICAL CORD:

The umbilical cord falls off approximately 5-15 days of the baby’s life. To avoid infection and inflammation, it is recommended to treat the umbilical cord with 70-degree alcohol two to three times a day. Alcohol is applied to a gauze sterile napkin, the base is wiped, as well as the umbilical cord itself. Do not use powder, talcum powder and slimming belt. Change the sterile pad at every diaper change. If there is an unpleasant odor or discharge from the umbilical cord, it is urgent to consult a pediatrician. Once the umbilical cord falls off, continue working until the surface is dry and clean.

    BATHING:

Bathing should be done daily. It is necessary to choose a favorable moment for both the baby and the parents. It is more convenient to carry out this procedure before the evening sleep of the child. Make sure that the temperature in the room is pleasant, there are no drafts and noises. Do not fill the bath more than 10-15 cm, the water should be warm, but not burning your elbow (about 37°C). Provide the child with the pleasure of bathing, talk to him; holding the child with one hand, wash it with the other. Taking a bath is a good opportunity for close contact with the father.

When taking a bath, wash your baby’s face first, then the baby’s body and limbs.

After taking a bath, a dry and warm towel should be prepared, spread on a wide and hard surface. Wrap the baby in a dry warm towel, put it on the changing table and continue wiping the baby, drying all skin folds, dry the head thoroughly, wipe the body with gentle movements.

    NAIL CARE:

Nail trimming is recommended no earlier than 15-30 days after birth, when the nails have grown, to avoid scratches that the baby can cause to himself. Trim your nails with clean scissors with rounded edges. The nails on the handles are trimmed in a rounded shape, and on the legs in a straight shape.

    CLOTHING:

Your baby’s clothes should be clean and free from restrictions. Avoid laces and products with pile.

The bed linen of the crib should be light and not impede the movement of the baby. Do not overwrap your child.

    ROOM:

The child’s room should have a calm environment and good daylight. The room should be well ventilated, make sure that pets do not enter it. It is recommended to maintain a constant comfortable temperature, approximately 20 degrees. Do not allow a large number of people in the room. Smoking is not allowed in the room.

The baby should sleep in his own crib, not in his parents’ bed. If possible, the child should sleep in his own room.

Maintain humidity levels if the room is air-conditioned or centrally heated.

WALK AND STAY IN THE SUN:

Start walking at the end of the first week of life, if climatic conditions allow. Walks should be daily. The duration of the walk depends on the time of year and the age of the child. During the hot season, avoid walks in the middle of the day and the exposure of the child to the open sun.

    SOAK:

If using a pacifier, make sure it is one piece. Try to use it only at night when the baby falls asleep, slowly removing it from the mouth while the baby is sleeping. Boil it at least once a day for a few minutes, do not hang it around your neck.

Adults must not place a baby’s pacifier in their mouth.

Never dip it in sugar, condensed milk, honey or other products.

    BOWL EMPTY:

During the first 24-48 hours, the stool may be thick black (meconium). Then the stool becomes green-yellowish in color (transitional stool). The following days are yellow. The number of bowel movements per day varies. Emptying can occur at every meal, as well as once a day or every three days. It is normal when the baby empties the intestines while eating with yellow semi-liquid stools.

Diarrhea (increased bowel movements) refers to very loose stools, and more often than usual. Mucus and blood may be present, often accompanied by other symptoms such as irritability, refusal to eat, or fever.

    CONSTIPATION:

Reduced bowel movements. Appears when the baby does not empty within 48-72 hours or the stool becomes hard and bowel movement is accompanied by discomfort and difficulty. It is not recommended at this age to give any laxative without a doctor’s prescription.

    RETURNING:

It is normal for milk to spit up after feeding, which coincides with the belching of air. Usually this is a small amount without any special effort.

    sneezing/hiccups:

sneezing and hiccups are normal in a newborn and do not require medical treatment.

    DRY SKIN:

Most common in the first week of a baby’s life. It is recommended to use moisturizing milk.

    BABY SLEEPING POSITION:

The Spanish Society of Neonatologists advises:

A healthy baby is put to sleep in a bed on its back or on its side.

There are medical situations where these provisions should not apply (facial anomaly – small chin, gastric emptying into the esophagus or, in some cases, prematurity . .. etc.) baby. Make sure the mattress is firm enough for the baby’s face to rest on the surface. You should never use a pillow, you must make sure that the child’s head is not covered with a blanket.

As a rule, especially in the first month of life, the baby spends most of his time sleeping. A newborn wakes up when he has a feeling of hunger or any discomfort, etc. Noises and disturbances that may disturb his sleep should be avoided.

    EARLY DIAGNOSIS OF ENDOCRINO-METABOLIC DISEASES

There is a series of metabolic diseases, such as hypothyroidism and phenylketonuria, which, if not treated promptly, can lead to mental retardation. These diseases cannot be diagnosed by external signs of a newborn. Therefore, it is very important to conduct studies to detect these pathologies (“heel examination”)

Teknon Medical Center systematically conducts these studies for all newborns. The results are sent to you by mail within 1-1.5 months.

A hotshot wildland firefighter is employed to combat blazing fire in the wild and forest areas at the federal, state and local level of the United States. A hotshot firefighter goes to such places where equipment cannot. The name “Hotshot” is derived from always being in the hottest areas of the fire. They are the elite team of 20 members specially trained to use chainsaws and shovels to clear the bushes, dig lines and cut down trees to suppress fire in the wild.

Their job is certainly not an easy task. They work 24 hours a day during fire season for about 6 months a year. Hotshot firefighters work in remote and steep terrains, where they get exposed to dry weather, wind, and other poisonous plants. Their work demands to stay away from home most of the time. They also go through rigorous physical training before they get hired. Since the job requires a high level of physical endurance, most of the hotshot firefighters tend to be young, in their twenties or thirties.

How to Become a Hotshot Firefighter?

Being a hotshot firefighter is not everyone’s cup of tea. The job of a hotshot crew is similar to that of the military. It requires a unique breed of people who love working long hours in the outdoors and accepts the physical endurance that the job demands. Following is a general guide with the step by step method on how to become a hotshot firefighter.

Step 1: Know the basic job requirements

The first and foremost step is to know whether you meet the basic job requirements, i.e., educational and physical needs as well as the skills mentioned above. There are different criteria for different countries. Check the specifications required in your country. Secondly, brush up your skills if required. Take out your shoes and go for a hike, assemble a tent, take a variety of courses offered and improve your chances of selection. Maybe volunteer as a firefighter or talk to any of a hotshot crew member and learn from the first-hand experience.

Step 2: Ensure your physical capability

As a hotshot firefighter, one has to handle physically excruciating tasks, so in order to fulfill the responsibility; one has to be physically fit and mentally agile. Whether you meet the required physical standards or not, will be tested through Work Capacity Test (WCT).  Before appearing for the WCT, start with your training sessions or hire a personal trainer. Consult with a physician and ensure that you are medically fit to carry out such tasks.

Step 3: Apply and get qualified

The last level is to search and apply for the position of a hotshot firefighter. Fill out the application form, and pass the written and physical exams. Furthermore, the applicants are also required to become certified or complete a few training courses. For example, in Colorado, firefighters have to earn the “Red Card” by completing the National Wildfire Coordinating Group Basic Firefighter course (S-130) and the Introduction to Fire Behavior course (S-190). This way, one can advance their career by pursuing additional training courses.

    Hotshot Firefighter Job Requirements

To become a hotshot firefighter, one needs to fulfill two basic requirements, education and physical.  Most hotshots start their career working in seasonal employment or as a volunteer in Wildland firefighting to gain fire service experience and knowledge.

Educational requirements vary with the state agency. As a minimum criteria, the candidate must be at least 18 years of age with a high school diploma or equivalent. The candidates can also enroll in fire science or emergency medical technician courses offered by various vocational schools and communities. Also, if one wants to further their education, one can enroll in a two-year and four-year degree program in:

    • Fire Science
    • Forestry
    • Fire Ecology
    • Fire Technology
    • Wildland Fire Management
    • Fire Leadership

Talking about the physical fitness requirement, Hotshot Firefighters have to maintain rigorous fitness standards and a healthy psyche. They must be able to endure various environmental challenges and extreme climatic conditions. To ensure that the candidate is physically fit for the profile, the NWCG requires them to pass the Work Capacity Test (WCT). The test includes the following:

    • Pack test (three-mile hike while carrying 45 pounds)
    • A mile and a half run in less than 10:45 or less
    • 40 sit-ups in less than 60 seconds
    • 25 push-ups in under 60 seconds
    • Perform a minimum of four chin-ups (depending on body weight)

    Hotshot Firefighter Training

Hotshot Firefighters go through a rigorous training schedule prior to the fire season or during the fire season every year. Many departmental training programs are conducted to ensure and maintain crew efficiency and safety. Every hotshot crew member is required to participate in a daily 1.5-hour training program which includes an obstacle course, free weights, and miles of trails to run and hike. The goal of the fitness training program is to shape and prepare every crew member for the future assignments.

As a part of the formal training, the hotshot crew members are also required to participate in the annual training program during each fire season. The program constitutes both classroom and field exercise. In addition to various training programs, there are multiple courses/classes offered for them related to basic fire safety rules, fire prevention techniques, and emergency medical procedures. Also, there are many advanced courses designed for the senior personnel. The following are few examples related to the field of study.

    • Forestry

The cash payments currently received by military personnel consist of two parts: a monthly allowance and an additional monetary remuneration established during martial law.

This was announced by Defense Minister Alexei Reznikov, commenting on the payment system for military personnel.

“The first part (payments – ed.) is the monthly monetary allowance that the military receives in accordance with their position, rank, length of service, etc. The second part is an additional monetary reward established at the initiative of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky for the period of martial law,” the minister said.

      – for those military personnel who are not directly involved in the conduct of hostilities, the additional remuneration per month is UAH 30,000, or approximately UAH 1,000 per day;

      – for soldiers participating in battles, additional remuneration is determined at the rate of UAH 100,000 per month, or approximately UAH 3,000 per day.

“That is, if a serviceman, say, an ordinary shooter, defended the border with Hungary for half a month, and the remaining half a month took a direct part in the battles in the Kharkiv region or Donbass, in a month he will be credited in total:

      – monthly cash security in the amount of about 13 −14 thousand UAH in accordance with the position and rank

      – about UAH 15,000 of additional remuneration for serving during martial law

      – and about UAH 50,000. for direct participation in hostilities.

That is, the total amount in this case for an ordinary shooter will be UAH 78-79 thousand minus deductions,” Reznikov said. and orders issued by the military command of the various structures of the defense forces.

If we are talking about the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the military unit submits an application to the Ministry of Defense for the payment of monetary allowance, on the basis of which the Ministry of Defense transfers money to the military unit, and part of it directly to the serviceman.

To receive cash payments, a serviceman must have an account in any Ukrainian bank.

“Money is paid to military personnel in the current month for the previous one. It is divided into two parts. In the first ten days of the month, military personnel receive monthly allowances in accordance with their position, rank and other parameters. In the second decade, additional remuneration is accrued, those 30 or 100 thousand for martial law and combat,” the minister added.

According to him, the payments are divided into two parts, since the amount of the monthly financial support is known and almost the same every month, and the amount of additional remuneration based on the results of the month should be calculated by the financial services of the units based on combat orders.

According to the Ministry of Defense, in May 2022 for April, the Ministry of Defense transferred monetary allowances and additional remuneration to the Armed Forces of Ukraine for a total of UAH 51.

Norvet has worked in child care for eight years and loved the concept of Play4Hours. Children can stay at the center for up to four hours a day. Since it’s a drop-in day care, parents don’t have to enroll in advance or pay a monthly bill. Parents can simply sign up online or at the door.

She said the center is also secure. They have cameras and lights located outside and several cameras inside the center.

“Know that while your kids are here, they are safe and having a good time,” Norvet said. “The parents only have access to those cameras while their child is in the building and that’s for safety and security purposes.”

Norvet said they also send parents updates on how their child is doing throughout the day.

“We use an app called ProCare, so while the kids are here the parents are getting constant updates on when they use the bathroom, when they’re doing a craft, we send three to four pictures a day,” Norvet said.

She said they do various learning activities, sensory-motor activities, gross motor activities, and crafts.

Play4Hours cares for children between the ages of 12 months and 12 years old. They divide the center into four different areas so kids are playing with other kids around their age.

Norvet said she hopes more parents take advantage of their services.

“I don’t think parents realize how much that they can utilize this center,” Norvet said. “Never feel bad needing a break. Stay-at-home moms, never feel bad for just needing a moment to yourself for self-care, to take a nap. You can only be the best for your family when you’re the best for you.”

Starting in February, they’ll be open Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

They’ll also be open 6-10 p.m. on Valentine’s Day if enough parents sign up.

    AMERICA’S MOST ACCREDITED

    We’re so proud!

Nationally only 10% of daycares are accredited – nearly 100% of our learning centers are. That’s a big difference,
and that means KinderCare kids are getting the very best. Here’s why.

    SCHOOL-READY

    What Learning Looks Like

Our talented early-childhood teachers set kids down the path toward becoming lifelong learners in a positive, safe, and nurturing environment.

    Belmont Shore KinderCare Programs

    Infant Programs (6 weeks-1 year)

Leaving your baby in someone else’s care is a big step. Everyone at our
centers—most importantly, our naturally gifted infant teachers—will work with
you to make sure the transition goes smoothly. When you step into our infant
classroom, you’ll see how much we want your infant to feel safe, loved, and
    ready to explore their world.

    Toddler Programs (1-2 Years)

Everything in our toddler classroom is designed for little explorers. That’s
because a lot is going on at this age. When your child is wandering all over the
place, that means they’re learning and discovering new things every day. We’ll
help them explore their interests (and find new ones!) as they play and learn.

    Discovery Preschool Programs (2-3 Years)

This age is filled with so much wonder and curiosity. That’s why we offer a ton
of books and toys and bring artwork down to kids eye level. Children in
discovery preschool also begin to learn how we all work together in a
classroom. Simple math and science, pretend play, and group play help them
get used to a more structured school setting.

    Preschool Programs (3-4 Years)

This age is all about expression, when kids really start to form their own ideas
about what they want to play and how they want to create. Every day in our
preschool classroom, your child will explore science experiments, create
artwork, and play pretend—all the skills needed for their big next step:
    kindergarten!

    Prekindergarten Programs (4-5 Years)

When you walk into one of our pre-K classrooms, you’ll see artwork and
writing displayed around the room. Labels are everywhere to help kids connect
letters with words. You’ll also see pictures on the walls that reflect the families
in our community. Your child will also deepen their knowledge in language,
math, science, Spanish, and social skills.

    Kindergarten Programs (5-6 Years)

Welcome to kindergarten: the gateway to grade school and everything that
comes next! Offered in select centers, our kindergarten programs have small
class sizes and curriculums that mix learning and fun. The basic building
blocks of reading, writing, math, and science are key in kindergarten, so we
make sure they get lots of practice in all of these areas.

    Interactive Kindergarten (5-6 Years)

Kindergarten is a critical year for young learners. Experienced KinderCare teachers will
tap into your child’s natural curiosity to help get them even more prepared for
elementary school. Our engaging lessons make the most of current technology while
offering plenty of hands-on play and exploration.

    Participating Child Care Aware Center

KinderCare partners with Child Care Aware® of America to offer fee assistance for
Active Duty military families and flexible support to fit their needs when care at a Child
Development Center on the installation is not available.

    Learning Adventures – Enrichment Program

    Cooking Academy™ (3-12 Years)

In Cooking Academy, kids learn new recipes from cultures around the world and
develop a healthy relationship with food. They’ll whip up everything from Southwest
rainbow lettuce wraps to pumpkin muffins, building their skills in STEM, communication,
and more along the way. And yes—little chefs get to eat their culinary creations!

    Music Explorers™ (2-4 Years)

KinderCare families are already giving a standing ovation to our newest Learning
Adventures program: Music Explorers! Kids will learn to sing, move, listen, play
instruments, and even create their own tunes. Our original curriculum blends math,
science, social studies, literacy, and mindfulness (think yoga!) for a uniquely KinderCare
way of learning the foundations of music.

    Phonics Adventures® (2-4 Years)

Learning how to read is a whole lot of fun at KinderCare! We help kids grow to love
books and words (and get ready for kindergarten) in our Phonics Adventures program.
From discovering the basics of vowels to practicing poetry, kids learn all about letters
and sounds in small-group lessons made just for their age group. (Bonus: Kids who
attend our phonics program are more prepared than their peers for school—and we
have the data to prove it.)

    Spanish

Spanish Adventures provides young learners with a foundation for later success with
the Spanish language. Music, games, children’s Spanish literature, and other tools give
children multiple opportunities to hear, practice, and see Spanish language to develop
vocabulary and conversation skills. Curriculum includes lessons on greetings, numbers,
colors, animals, family, body parts, and pets, as well as how to engage conversationally
during common scenarios at home, a restaurant, or at the zoo.

    Our Teachers

We’re the only company in early childhood education to select teachers based on natural talent. Being a great educator isn’t enough though.
KinderCare teachers are also amazing listeners, nurturers, boo-boo fixers, and smile-makers. Put more simply,
we love our teachers and your child will, too.

Meet just a few of our amazing KinderCare teachers!

    A KINDERCARE TEACHER WITH

    An Artist’s Heart

“My classroom is full of art!” says Mary Annthipie-Bane, an award-winning early childhood educator at KinderCare. Art and creative expression, she says, help children discover who they really are.

We put our best-in-class teachers in a best-in-class workplace. We’re so proud to have been named one of Gallup’s 37 winners of the Great Workplace Award.
When you put great teachers in an engaging center, your children will experience
an amazing place to learn and grow.

Narva-Jõesuu is a popular Estonian resort. // Irina Tokareva

The Estonian resort town of Narva-Jõesuu may open a summer kindergarten for children of foreign tourists. The city administration submitted a corresponding request to the legal chancellor.

Traveling children can be taken to the local Chamomile (Karikakar) kindergarten, which is responsible to the city. After the admission of children living in the served territory is completed, children from any other regions can be taken to vacant places, reports Regnum.

Narva-Jõesuu is a resort in the north-east of Estonia in the county of Ida-Virumaa. Here is the longest beach on the coast of the country. In summer, many foreigners come here, including for a long vacation. Especially high growth in tourist flow was noted from Russia – more than 30% annually. Russians from time to time are interested in the possibility of sending their children to kindergarten, and the authorities decided to meet these wishes. However, this idea must be approved by the state authorities.

The McMartin case: who are they and what are they known for

The events that took place in a small American town forty years ago are clear evidence that people can believe anything. In any absurdity, in any nonsense – and infect others with your faith. Faith in the improbable and unbelievable is promoted by fear. The McMartin Kindergarten Trial is an example of such a mental epidemic. Not the first and certainly not the last.

The McMartin Kindergarten was very popular with the residents of Manhattan Beach. The scandalous lawsuit made him famous throughout America. The scandalous lawsuit made him famous throughout America

Photo: Lacy Atkins / Los Angeles Times / Getty Images

    Location

This happened in Manhattan Beach, California. The word “beach” (“beach”) in the name characterizes this settlement well. One of the main attractions of the city is a long strip of sandy beach. It comes with everything you need for a leisurely beach holiday – boutiques, expensive restaurants, etc. The population of the city, both now and 40 years ago, is about 30-35 thousand people.

Sometimes one unremarkable act sets off a long chain of events leading to unexpected results. The chain of events that made Manhattan Beach famous throughout America and beyond began just like this: a mother brought her son to kindergarten.

Mother’s name was Judy Johnson. Shortly before that, 39-year-old Judy divorced her husband on the second attempt and was left without money, but with two sons in her arms. The eldest was 13 years old, he was diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer. The youngest, Matthew, was in his third year. Salvation from life’s problems Judy was looking for in alcohol.

On May 12, 1983, Judy brought Matthew to the McMartin Kindergarten for the first time.

The kindergarten was known throughout the city. He had an excellent reputation. It was founded at 1956 Virginia McMartin. Local authorities awarded her honorary diplomas four times for services to the city. In 1983, Virginia was 76 years old. Her whole family worked in the kindergarten. Daughter, Peggy McMartin Bucky, was a co-owner and director of the institution. Peggy’s husband Charles Bucky set up a backyard for the kids to play in. His hands created decorative wooden figures (camel, octopus, dinosaur, lion, giraffe), rocking chairs in the shape of ducks, the Jungle sports complex with ladders, ropes and swings, a wooden helicopter, a wooden car parked at a wooden gas station. Another attraction was a tunnel made of wooden boxes, about 5.5 m long. The kids crawled along it with pleasure. The boxes lay on the ground, there were no other tunnels on the territory of the kindergarten. Neither on earth nor underground.

Charles and Peggy’s children, Peggy Ann Bucky and Raymond (Ray) Bucky, worked as teachers in the family daycare.

Due to the huge popularity of the McMartin Kindergarten, parents had to wait in line for up to six months to enroll their children. But Judy didn’t wait.

That day she brought Matthew to kindergarten and just left him there. In the boy’s lunch box was a note explaining who he was. Peggy Bucky sympathized with the single mother and her son and signed Matthew into the garden.

As the saying goes, no good deed goes unpunished.

In July the same year Judy took her son to the doctor. She said that Matthew’s skin around his anus was red and itchy. Judy suffered from vaginitis (inflammation of the vaginal mucosa) and was afraid that she could infect her son. The doctor did not notice anything serious during the examination. A month later, on August 12, Johnson turned not to the doctors, but to the police. Judy told Detective Jane Hoag over the phone that the previous morning when she sent her son off to kindergarten, his anus looked normal, but after returning from kindergarten it was red. This has happened before, she said. There was only one male kindergarten teacher, Ray Bucky. Johnson also said that lately Matthew has begun to play doctor – he pretends to give injections, measures the temperature. After questioning her son, Jay learned that he learned this from Ray Bucky. The worried mother decided that the “thermometer” was the caregiver’s penis.

On the advice of Detective Hoag, Johnson took her son to the doctor. At the University of California Medical Center, the child was diagnosed with erythema (redness of the skin or mucous membrane caused by a strong rush of blood to the capillaries) and excoriation injury (violation of the integrity of the upper layers of the skin due to mechanical damage). According to doctors, the cause could be “forcible penetration and/or rubbing,” which “could be consistent with” sexual abuse. Later, one of the two participants in the examination, intern Linda Golden, admitted that at the time she “knew nothing about sexual abuse.”

After the first contact with the police, Judy Johnson began to constantly ask her son about what was happening in the kindergarten. He, according to her, named the names of two more boys who suffered from the actions of the teacher.

She called the mother of one of these boys. She, after talking with her son, called back and said that her son did not like Ray Bucky, but the teacher did nothing wrong with her child.

Detective Hoag visited the Johnsons’ house several times, talked to Matthew, called other parents whose children went to McMartin kindergarten (names suggested by Judy). All parents claimed that nothing bad happened to their children.

Judy Johnson continued to question her son and kept calling Detective Hoag with more and more details. Ray Bucky tied up Matthew, put a hair dryer on his head. Once, going into the bathroom and seeing his mother there in shorts and a bra, the child said that Ray put a bra on him. Another time, that Ray did his makeup.

On August 30, while visiting the Johnsons again, the detective asked Matthew where Ray put his penis. The child spread his legs and pointed to the anus with his finger.

On September 7, Detective Hoag arrested Ray Bucky. During the search, the following items were seized: a rubber duck, a graduation gown, a teddy bear and Playboy magazines. On the same day, Bucky was released due to lack of evidence to bring charges against him.

The next day, the city’s police chief, Harry Kuhlmeyer, sent letters to a large number (100-200 according to various sources) of parents whose children went to McMartin kindergarten. It said that Ray Buckley was suspected of child abuse. Kuhlmeyer asked parents to ask their children if they were witnesses or victims of this kind of crime. The letter ended with a request to maintain confidentiality and not tell anything to anyone except the next of kin. Of course, soon the whole city knew that Ray Bucky was suspected of pedophilia.

After Ray Bucky’s arrest, Judy Johnson called the police and the prosecutor’s office many times, giving more and more details. On November 30, she told Detective Hoag that, according to Matthew, not only Ray, but other people treated him cruelly.

Teacher Babette Spitler stepped on Matthew’s stomach, causing him to vomit. An unfamiliar old woman came to the kindergarten. She held the boy’s legs while he was raped. Matthew was forced to perform oral sex on Peggy Bucky. The child was taken to some ranch, where they were forced to ride naked. Ray took the pills, gave Matthew injections, killed the dog and put the cat in “hot water”. Ray raped Matthew by putting his head in the toilet.

In October 1983, the California Attorney’s Office approached Kathleen (Key) McFerlane of the nonprofit Children’s Institute International (CII, now the Children’s Institute). Inc.) asking them to interview children who were allegedly victims of sexual abuse.

Video-recorded interviews began on 1 November.

Of the 15 children interviewed, only three told something that could be used to accuse Ray Bucky and other kindergarten staff. But Key MacFarlane was sure that all children who attended kindergarten were sexually abused.

Polls have become more aggressive and their quality has declined. The official guidelines for conducting surveys note that it is important to give the child the opportunity to speak out, to tell everything in their own words. If the number of words spoken by the interviewer exceeds the number of words spoken by the child, this may indicate that the interviewer is not professional and that the interviewer is using leading and prompting questions. These rules have been broken.

When interviewing kindergarteners, the following suggestive and manipulative techniques were used to lead to the right answer: 1. Praise or reward for the right answer (“Thank you for saying that. You are so smart!”), Negative reaction to “wrong” (“Are you sure? Exactly?”; “Let’s check how smart you are, can you remember correctly”; “You are a cowardly kitten”). 2. Repetition of the question. The child seems to be hinted that he did not like his last answer, was wrong. “Are you afraid of Kelly? – No no? – No. – Would you tell me if you were afraid? 3. Information from other witnesses. In marketing, this technique is called social proof. After hearing what (according to the interviewer) other children have seen or said, the child may want to join the majority opinion. “I don’t want to hear no more. All the little boys and girls in kindergarten were touched like that.” 4. Assumption. The child is offered to guess whether some event could have happened, or to imagine that it happened: “Do you think that sometimes this nasty touch happened when she was tied up and could not leave? ..”; “Do you think Mr. Ray could touch like that?”; “Do you think it’s possible?”; “Where do you think he could touch her? Can you take a pointer and show him where he would touch it? 5. Introduction of new information. The question contains information that the child himself has not provided before: “- How about the Naked Movie Star? Remember this game? – No. – Everyone remembers this game. Let’s try to figure it out.”

Numerous psychological studies prove that the use of such techniques greatly influences what children say.

CII Medical Consultant Astrid Heger examined 150 children and concluded that 80% of them were victims of sexual abuse. At the same time, she recognized the fact of violence from words, even if there was no physical confirmation of this.

In January 1984, Virginia McMartin and Peggy Bucky announced they were closing the kindergarten. In February, KABC reporter Wayne Sats was the first to speak on the air about the sex scandal at the McMartins’ kindergarten. In April, the Los Angeles Times reported that kindergarteners were raped, photographed naked, forced to watch animals being slaughtered.

By March, the number of children identified by CII as victims of sexual abuse had reached 360. That same month, law enforcement raided and ransacked several kindergartens in the Los Angeles area. Nothing illegal was found.

On March 22, 1984, Ray Bucky, Peggy McMartin Bucky, Virginia McMartin, Peggy Ann Bucky, and kindergarten employees Mary Ann Jackson, Betty Raydor, and Babette Spitler were charged with 115 counts of child sexual abuse. All of them were arrested.

By May, the number of charges reached 208, 40 children were recognized as victims. In August, there were already 512 counts.

Judy Johnson constantly informed the authorities of all the new details of what was happening in the kindergarten. Here are excerpts from the minutes of her interrogations conducted on February 1984: “Billy describes the sacrament in church. He recited a prayer similar in sound to Our Father. The goat climbed higher and higher and higher. The bad man threw him down the stairs. Later he woke up. Ray poked Peggy on the altar. Lots of black candles. Ray took his right index finger. Blood flowed from him. Ray put him in the goat’s anus… Billy and his family were threatened a lot. It’s not clear if this was a doll or a real baby (Billy says it was a real baby), but he was decapitated in the church and his brains burned… Billy was forced to drink the blood of babies. When Billy’s ass bled, Ray stuck a tampax up his ass to stop the bleeding, then took it out… Billy was burying Miss Betty. There were no holes in the coffin. Billy had paper clips inserted into his ears, nipples and tongue. Babs stuck the scissors in his eyes. She beat him many times. She chopped animals into pieces and said that she would come at night and take them away. She pushed him in the stomach and hit him against the wall … The lion hurt Billy … Billy believes that he flew from Los Angeles on a plane to the Palm Springs area. He says that the plane was like the Federal Express, only without windows … In the church, Peggy drilled a child under the armpits with a drill … Ray flew through the air.

then doubts may arise that Judy Johnson was mentally healthy. The prosecutors, Detective Hoag, judges and other representatives of the authorities and the law did not seem to have such doubts. District Attorney Robert Filibosyan’s head was generally occupied with something completely different – he was trying to get re-elected for a new term. The media took the same view as the police.

The first people who thought that Judy Johnson needed psychiatric help were her father and brother. On March 6, 1985, they came to her home, hoping to persuade Judy to voluntarily enter a psychiatric hospital. Judy met them with a 12-gauge shotgun in her hands. She pointed the barrel at her relatives, cocked the trigger and said: “Get off my land. This is sacred private property.” After that, the father and brother went to the police station. Judy was hospitalized forcibly. After 12 days in the hospital, she was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.

Letters to the parents of 200 children and interviews with children in CII contributed to the spread of rumors around the city. Emotions took precedence over common sense. Worried parents are capable of believing anything. They drove children around the city in cars to show them places where they could be abused. Real estate agent Bob Curry began to conduct his own informal investigation. At various times, three of Bob’s children – a daughter and two sons – attended the McMartin kindergarten. Curry met with other parents, told them that other children said their children were also victims of perverts, and advised them to go with the children to CII. Curry announced a $10,000 reward to anyone who finds pornography filmed in a kindergarten. Two people responded to the ad. One promised to provide photographs, but did not. The second promised to provide photographs if the authorities dropped charges against him for violating the terms of early release from prison. Again, no photographs were submitted.

In February 1984, Bob Curry filed a lawsuit against Virginia McMartin and Peggy Bucky for assault, battery, and mental harm, seeking $1 million in damages each. In March, two of Bob’s sons told CII’s Key MacFarlane that Ray Bucky threatened them with a gun, tied them up, shoved a thermometer up their anus, played the Naked Movie Star sex game, performed oral and anal sex on them, in front of them. tortured rabbits and turtles and killed a horse. True, both went to kindergarten at a time when Raymond Bucky was not there, but no one paid attention to this fact.

Bob’s daughter categorically denied the fact of sexual abuse in the kindergarten, during the medical examination there were no signs of abuse, but the girl was nevertheless recognized as a victim of sexual abuse.

Bob Curry actively tried to help the authorities. He gave lectures and took part in the talk show Devilworshippers. He discovered two churches where children were brought to participate in devilish masses, reported the license plates of “suspicious” cars, learned the name of the air cargo company in whose plane the children were transported in boxes, gave the prosecutor the names of parents who may be involved in satanic rituals, informed the authorities that athletes from the Anaheim Angels baseball team may have been involved in the corruption of children.

The following conspiracy theory has circulated among parents who believed the allegations. Satanists worked in the McMartin kindergarten. The kindergarten was the headquarters of an underground child porn empire. Children were drugged and forced to participate in satanic rituals and sexual games with kindergarten staff and outsiders, both inside and outside the kindergarten. When children were killed, various animals were killed. Children had to see corpses – adults and children. The kindergarten had secret rooms that could be accessed through secret doors and underground tunnels.

In March 1985, over 40 parents, led by Bob Curry, began excavating the grounds for animal carcasses and secret tunnels. Archaeologists also engaged in similar excavations – by order of the prosecutor’s office. Nothing suspicious was found.

Los Angeles County Attorney Robert Filibosyan hoped that a high-profile case against pedophile Satanists would help him re-elected for a new term. But he lost the election, and the new prosecutor, Ira Rayner, who led the investigation, came to the conclusion that the evidence collected was too weak to be presented in court. On January 17, 1986, it was announced that five people had been cleared of all charges. There are two suspects left – Ray and Peggy Bucky.

In December 1986, Judy Johnson died of cirrhosis of the liver caused by chronic alcoholism. The woman who started it all did not live to see the trial.

The trial began in July 1987. Shortly before it began, a powerful blow was dealt to the position of the prosecution. The prosecutor’s office and the lawyers of the defendants were given recordings of interviews (with a total duration of 30 hours), which were made by documentary filmmakers Abby and Myra Mann. In this interview, former prosecutor Glenn Stevens, who worked on the kindergarten staff case, pleaded not guilty. He admitted that many facts indicating the mental imbalance of Judy Johnson were hidden from defense lawyers (for example, that on July 19At 84, she told the police that her son was raped by a Marine who had voluntarily left the unit, and also that Ray Bucky flew through the air). Stevens argued that in the interviews that were conducted at the CII, everything was “greatly exaggerated and embellished”, that prosecutors “have nothing to do in court.” The defense was also not told that during the police identification process, Matthew Johnson did not identify Ray Bucky.

The trial lasted two and a half years. Having no material evidence, the prosecution relied on videotapes of interviews with children. But to the jury, these records seemed unconvincing. The jury did not believe the statement of the prison informant George Freeman, who was planted next to Ray Bucky in the cell. Freeman claimed that Bucky confessed his guilt to him. It was one of many cases in which Freeman gave testimony to the authorities in exchange for better conditions.

On January 18, 1990, a jury acquitted Raymond Bucky and Peggy McMartin Bucky of 52 counts of indecent and depraved conduct towards a minor under the age of 14.

On the remaining 13 counts, the jury failed to reach a unanimous decision (overwhelmingly in favor of acquittal). After the announcement of the jury’s verdict, mother and son burst into tears. Raymond left the court, refusing to comment. Peggy, leaving the courthouse, said: “I survived hell, and now we have lost everything. I was worried about my son, for what was done to him… because my son would never harm a child. ” Juror Julie Peters told reporters that the children could believe what they were saying. Prosecutor Lael Rubin said: “We must respect the jury’s decision, even if I personally disagree with it.”

After more than five years behind bars, Ray Bucky was released on $1.5 million bail.

Disgruntled parents began campaigning for a retrial of Ray Bucky on the counts on which he had not been acquitted. Five hundred people marched through the streets of Manhattan Beach holding “We Trust Children” placards.

No new evidence of Raymond Bucky’s guilt had emerged by the start of the second trial. The new trial did not last long – from May 7 to July 27 1990 years. The jury again failed to reach a unanimous decision (the majority was in favor of acquittal).

As a result, all charges against Raymond Bucky were dropped. The judge decided not to prosecute him any more.

The trial of the McMartin Kindergarten employees was the longest and most expensive (more than $15 million) in the history of American justice.

Not all the heroes of this court drama survived to this day.

Virginia McMartin sued Bob Curry in 1991 for defamation. She won the trial, but she was awarded conditional monetary compensation – $ 1. At 19Virginia McMartin passed away on the 95th.

Peggy McMartin Bucky died in 2000.

Peggy Ann Bucky was able to get her teaching license reinstated after the charges were dropped (she is a specialist in teaching children with disabilities).

TV reporter Wayne Sats, who became romantically involved with Key MacFarlane during the trial, died in 1992.

Key McFarlane continued to engage in social work, co-authored several books on the topic of child sexual abuse.

Astrid Heger is a professor of pediatrics at the University of Southern California and the founder and CEO of the Violence Intervention Program, which provides assistance to victims of domestic and sexual violence.

Former District Attorney Robert Filibosyan is now retired but continues to provide legal services.

Raymond Bucky got a law degree after his release, changed his name, left Manhattan Beach. Married, has two children. Media representatives are denied interviews.

Kyle Sapp, who went to McMartin kindergarten in 1979-1980, testified against Ray Bucky at the age of eight in 1984. 21 years later, Kyle Zirpolo (he changed his name) admitted in an interview with journalist Debbie Nathan that he made up all his stories about sexual abuse and Satanists.
