KinderCare will be providing you with your year-end statement electronically when it becomes available early next year. See below for frequently asked questions and more information.

How can I get a copy of my Year-End Statement?

KinderCare will be providing you with your year-end statement electronically when it becomes available in early 2020. This statement is intended to provide you with a tool to assist with your income tax return preparation. If you are a currently enrolled family, year-end statements will now be provided to you electronically. If you are requesting a year-end-statement for previous years, please contact your Center Director. If you are a formerly enrolled family, year-end statements will also be provided to you electronically. However, in the event that we no longer have your current email address, please contact your Center Director for a statement. If your center is no longer open for business, please contact Customer Care by phone at 1-888-525-2780 so we may assist you.

If the Year-End Statement provided by KinderCare Learning Centers is not sufficient in the event of an audit, what should I use as proof of payment made to KinderCare Learning Centers?

The best representation of what you have paid in child care expenses are copies of your cancelled checks, your bank or debit/credit statement, online payments and/or money order receipts, which we would suggest keeping for future reference.

My child transferred to a new center mid-year. I have payment records for the current center where we are enrolled, but it does not include payment records for the previous center. How can I get payment records for the previous center?

You may request a copy of payments made to the previous center by contacting the Center Director at that location. If you are unable to obtain a copy of your payment records from the Center Director, you may request your payment records by contacting Customer Care by phone at 1-888-525-2780.  

There is a discrepancy on my Year-End Statement. How do I correct this?

Please see your Center Director who can print a copy of your ledger card, review your account with you, and assist you in clarifying any discrepancies.

The center where we were previously enrolled has closed. How do I get my Year-End Statement?

You may request your Year-End Statement for a closed center by by contacting Customer Care by phone at 1-888-525-2780. 

I need the EIN/Tax ID number for my center. How can I obtain this information?

Families can access the EIN in their Family Connection account by going to Account History and pulling a Flexible Account Reimbursement Statement. If you have additional questions, please contact Customer Care by phone at 1-888-525-2780 so that we may assist you.

I’ve started making payments online with Family Connection. How can I get a statement listing all payments?

Within Family Connection, the best way to access year-to-date payments is to use the Account History tab and print a FSA report. This report includes all payments made during the period requested in the parameters of your report.

Here’s a Powerful Parenting Mantra: Before You Correct, Connect

When your child misbehaves, how do you react? Do you get angry and criticize? Do you immediately think about punishment? There’s a better way that will make everyone feel a lot better and also yields better results: Before you make a correction, make a connection.

Extensive research shows that we cannot influence our children—in other words, change their behavior—unless we first have a strong emotional connection with them. That’s why, when faced with unwanted behavior, it’s often better to focus on the relationship with the child rather than the misdeed at hand.

So next time your child, say, hurls a cup of juice across the room, take a breath, and get into connection mode. Here’s how.

  1. Stop doing whatever you are doing and give your child your full focused attention. Really listen to whatever it is the he is saying. This keeps bad behavior from escalating.

  2. Validate your child’s feelings and give him some language to talk about them. This can be hard if he’s just done something that really pushes your buttons, but there’s a reason to start with your child’s feelings: Children will only be able to really listen to you after they feel listened to. Take the juice-hurling example. A parent might say something like, Wow, that was a really big throw, you must be SUPER mad. Like an elephant-tearing-down-a-tree mad. Am I right?                                                           

  3. When your child has calmed a bit, then it’s your turn to share your feelings, which are every bit as valid. When I see the juice all over the floor I feel discouraged because I want our house to be a comfortable place for our family. If I have to mop the floor, I have to stay up later and I’m really feeling tired.

  4. After a cooling off period, focus on solutions with your child—and remember your sense of humor! This mess is super huge, maybe we need the ShopVac. Or What would you like for your cleaning up music? “Frozen” or “Uptown Funk”?

  5. Instead of imposing consequences, ask curiosity questions. Asking genuine questions about what happened (and listening to the answers) helps children thoughtfully explore the results of their choices. How do you feel about what happened? How can you do it differently in the future?

  6. Give hugs. As silly as this sounds, there are times when all of us need nothing more than a hug.

  7. Spend special time with your child when they are not misbehaving. What would create a greater connection for your child than to spend one on one time with him or her?

Of course, the need for correction is a must in families, but it’s minor, really, in comparison to creating real connections, which can last a lifetime. The quality of the relationship we create with our children will profoundly influence the outcome of our biggest job ever—helping them become autonomous, wonderful people in the world.

What is a family kindergarten?

Family Kindergarten is not a private preschool organized by the family. Officially, this is a group of an ordinary municipal kindergarten, functioning at home or in a separate specially rented room. The possibility of creating family preschool groups is enshrined in the Order of the Ministry of Education and Science dated August 30, 2013 No. 1014 “ON APPROVAL OF THE ORGANIZATION AND IMPLEMENTATION OF EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES FOR THE BASIC GENERAL EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS – EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS OF PRESCHOOL EDUCATION” (clause 13): family preschool groups may have a general developmental orientation or provide supervision and care for children without implementing an educational program for preschool education, groups may include both pupils of the same age and pupils of different ages.

One of the parents is appointed as an educator, only he brings up not other people’s children, but his own (sometimes other people’s children are added to the group if there are few own preschoolers). At the same time, children can attend classes and other activities in the kindergarten, of which the group is a structural unit. The parent-educator is paid a salary, there is a teaching experience. And the preschool institution provides him with methodological and advisory assistance, and also controls the activities – the organization of the regimen of children, conditions, training sessions. Keeping a child in a family group costs the budget more than in a regular group – because the group is usually small, but additional staff positions are allocated for it – the rate of the educator, as well as in most cases part of the rates of other staff (nurse, cook, social pedagogue and etc.).

There is no single document regulating the operation of this form of childcare organization. Such family education groups began to form at preschool educational institutions (DOE) as a variable form of preschool education in certain regions, their organization and activities were regulated by local regulations (see Letter of the Department of State Policy in the field of general education dated September 27, 2012 No. 08-406 About the Organization of family preschool groups as structural units in preschool educational institution » ). Accordingly, approaches to the creation of such groups in different regions are different (from the number and age of children in the group to the requirements for accommodation, food for children, qualifications of the parent-educator, etc.). In some regions, such groups are considered as measures to support large families ( Saratov ), in some – as a measure of the fullest coverage of children with preschool education, i.e. to create a group, the family does not have to be large ( Samara ). In some regions, any former teacher or educator ( Syktyvkar ) can become a family group teacher except for the mother of preschoolers. Somewhere the organization of nutrition for children is entrusted to the parent-educator, and he is paid compensation for food ( Moscow ), somewhere the family group is provided with food by the preschool institution to which this group is attached ( Gukovo, Rostov Region ), or it is provided the possibility of cooking at the place of operation of the group from the raw set of products provided by the preschool educational institution ( Purovsky district of YaNAO ). In some regions, the requirements for the premises in which the family group operates are so strict that it is impossible to fulfill them in an apartment ( St. Petersburg ), so family groups are organized in the premises of the kindergarten. In St. Petersburg, there were even cases when the mother-educator of the family group worked in the general group, , practically fulfilling the duties of an assistant educator .

By the beginning of this year, the number of family kindergartens in the regions amounted to more than 20.7 thousand with a total number of children of about 240 thousand people. On November 17, 2014, the Committee on Family, Women and Children held a round table on the topic: “Legal guarantees for the development of family kindergartens and other variable forms of preschool education” , where representatives of the regions and leaders of various forms of preschool education organizations shared their experience. For example, special programs for the development of family kindergartens have been adopted in the Nizhny Novgorod and Ivanovo regions. In particular, in the Nizhny Novgorod region, it is planned to build individual residential buildings, some of which are used for a family kindergarten, and the other for the family of a teacher who, after working for 10 years, gets the right to register the entire house as a property.

During the discussion at the round table, a number of measures were proposed for the development of variable forms of preschool education, including the mitigation of sanitary requirements. As a result of the meeting, recommendations will be drawn up for state authorities and local self-government bodies. Perhaps their implementation will facilitate the creation of family groups of preschool education. However, in any case, parents who decide to create such groups at home should be prepared for the fact that the children’s institution, of which their group will become a structural unit, will have to control the conditions in which their children are brought up.

The rights of private institutions have been greatly expanded. If earlier they could not receive children for more than 5 hours, now they can work at least around the clock.

Care and supervision groups can be organized both in separate buildings and in attached buildings, as well as in apartments.

It is possible to organize round-the-clock groups in which parents take their children only for the weekend.

But it should be remembered that the kindergarten is responsible for the life and health of children, so the security system must be thought out to the smallest detail.

It is necessary to equip the apartment with a fire alarm, establish a system for recording and storing medical records, train staff in first aid, etc.

The following requirements are additionally imposed on short-stay groups, family preschool groups and other similar organizations, regardless of organizational and legal forms and forms of ownership:

  • The area of ​​a group room should be at least 2.5 square meters per child in nursery groups, at least two square meters per child in preschool groups, excluding furniture and its placement. The bedroom area should be at least 1.8 square meters per child in nursery groups, at least two square meters per child in preschool groups, excluding the distance from the outer walls when arranging beds.
  • A family kindergarten does not have to have a special playground. You can walk in the park or in any other convenient place.

  • As for the nutrition of children, it must be balanced, the products must be fresh, and when preparing dishes, the principle of “sparing nutrition” must be observed, that is, cooking, stewing, baking. Every day, the menu should include: milk, sour-milk drinks, sour cream, meat, potatoes, vegetables, fruits, juices, bread, cereals, butter and vegetable oil, sugar, salt. Other products (cottage cheese, fish, cheese, eggs and others) – 2-3 times a week.

The same can be said about yellow coral – its uniqueness leads to a high price of the product.

Not all corals have a calcium skeleton. So, black coral is completely vegetative. For its unique nature and low prevalence, it was called royal.

Although not among the most expensive, white coral is often used in jewelry. For example, in the Sea of ​​Japan, in addition to pink ones, you can find high-quality snow-white fossils. Their tops are a valuable material and allow you to create inexpensive, but spectacular decorations.

Medical applications

The healing properties of coral stone are recognized by both folk and traditional medicine. Its healing effect is due to a large number of biologically active substances.

In traditional medicine, coral powder is used to treat diseases of the endocrine system, musculoskeletal system, diseases of the skin, heart, blood vessels and blood pathologies, such as anemia. Calcium, which is part of marine polyps, is absorbed by the human body much better than other types of building material of human bones. Since this is a gift from the deep sea, it fills the body with iodine, which ensures high efficiency in the treatment of thyroid diseases. The coral mineral is also used in dentistry; dental implants are made on its basis.

Alternative medicine ascribes more extensive properties to the marine polyp. It is believed that it promotes wound healing, relieves depression, insomnia and nervous tics. With constant wear, a coral bracelet improves vision, memory and blood circulation. The fossil contributes to the perception of new information, so these decorations are suitable for students and schoolchildren.

It is recommended to wear coral beads for throat diseases, both for treatment and prevention. The fossil normalizes appetite, which is important for obese patients.

It has been observed that in people with chronic diseases, the jewelry becomes stained in a short period (several months).

Lithotherapists claim that for each disease a certain type of marine polyp is needed. So, with pathologies of the nervous system or sleep disturbance, pink coral will help. But in case of diseases of the cardiovascular system or anemia, it is necessary to wear red stone jewelry.

Man and coral reefs: today and tomorrow

Coral reefs are fantastically beautiful and the most “densely populated” ecosystems of the oceans. The biomass of benthic invertebrates and fish in them is estimated at hundreds of grams per square meter of seabed. The total number of species on coral reefs can reach one million or even more.

The reef ecosystem owes such a vibrant life to unicellular algae (symbiont algae) living in corals, whose photosynthetic activity does not stop throughout the year.

A large amount of organic matter synthesized by symbiont algae (primary production) creates the energy basis for the formation of extremely diverse and dense coral reef communities.

Coral mucus washed off the reef serves as a substrate for the intensive development of bacterial plankton, which, in turn, forms a bacterial-organic suspension that serves as food for zooplankton and benthic invertebrates, and further along the food chain – for fish. Thus, coral reefs increase the productivity of the surrounding marine areas.

Calcium carbonate, intensively secreted by stony corals, foraminifers, and calcareous algae, is used to build the coral reef frame. Therefore, coral communities make a significant contribution to maintaining the carbonate balance of sea water, releasing up to 2 billion tons of calcium carbonate from it per year.

Wave-resistant reef ridges protect the shores of tropical countries from the destructive action of sea waves, preventing coastal erosion.

Local fishing in the reef zone is the most important source of food for the population of coastal countries (for example, the countries of Oceania). It has been carried out for thousands of years in such areas with gentle, non-destroying reef methods. Hook tackle, traps, nets outside the reef zone were used. Back in the 80s of the last century, reef fish resources were estimated at 9% of the total world marine fish stocks. Now these stocks are severely undermined due to the intensification of fishing.

In recent years, areas bordering reefs have been considered very promising for mariculture – the cultivation of useful algae, echinoderms, molluscs, crustaceans and fish.

Coral reefs are excellent “natural laboratories” for studying various aspects of metabolism in the reef community – specific biologically active compounds have been found in them, which have excellent prospects for medicinal use. It should be noted that the industrial production of these compounds is planned to be carried out not from reef hydrobionts, but by genetic engineering methods.

Finally, it is difficult to overestimate the role of coral reefs in the development of tourism – an important source of income for coastal countries.

Coral reefs are found in the tropical waters of the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic oceans, where the temperature usually does not fall below 18 o C, although they withstand both a short-term cooling of the water to 16 o C, and a short-term warming up to 35 o C ( what happens, for example, in the Persian Gulf). Because symbiotic algae require light for photosynthesis, reef-building corals prefer clear waters. But even there they are not found deeper than 75–80 m. Usually, reef-forming corals live at depths of no more than 40–60 m, and in muddy waters with a large amount of suspended matter, no deeper than 10 m (some areas of the Tonkin and Siam Gulfs of the South China seas).

In the shallow waters of tropical seas, corals create reefs that stagger the imagination with their size. So, the length of the Great Barrier Reef is about 2500 km; its width in the northern part is 2 km, in the southern – 152 km.

In the early 1980s, the total area occupied by coral reefs was estimated at about 600,000 km 2 . But by 2000, it had already decreased to about 250 thousand km 2 , which is only 0.07% of the area of ​​the World Ocean, but 25% of all marine fish species are concentrated on it.

The first corals on Earth, tabulates, appeared in the Ordovician period of the Paleozoic era, about 450 million years ago. Together with stromatoporid sponges, they formed the basis of reef structures. At the end of the Silurian (~ 416 million years ago) and in the Devonian (~ 416 – 359 million years ago), more evolutionarily developed rugosa corals (four-beam corals) and reef structures with an area of ​​hundreds of square kilometers appeared. This was the heyday of reef formation processes. In the middle of the Triassic (~ 246 – 229 million years ago), the first corals containing symbiont algae (zoo-xanthellae) formed, and about 50 million years ago (Cenozoic era, Eocene), modern families of madrepore corals * arose. At the same time, modern families of reef fish began to form and some modern genera arose, but it will take at least 35-40 million years before the appearance of most modern genera of reef fish.

Throughout the history of their existence, corals have repeatedly experienced periods of decline and mass death – the climate has changed, the level of the World Ocean has repeatedly risen and fallen. The last strong lowering of the ocean level occurred during the Wurm (Valdai) glaciation 25-16 thousand years ago – then it dropped 140 m below the modern one. Approximately 16 thousand years ago, due to the melting of glaciers, the ocean level began to rise, which reached the present level about 6 thousand years ago.

But neither the changing climate, nor the lowering or rising of the ocean level in previous geological epochs led to the complete and final death of reef-forming corals – they adapted to new conditions. A balanced reef ecosystem has great restoration potential. This is clearly seen in the reef revival after a series of strong typhoons in Oceania in the last century, when scattered fragments of coral colonies began to grow steadily immediately after the passage of the typhoon, quickly consolidating detrital material.

Global climate change today is accompanied by frequent extreme events. In particular, in 1997-1998 there was an anomalous increase in the temperature of the surface waters of the tropical zone of the World Ocean, which led to the mass death of corals in the vast waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Then, in the coastal regions of Bahrain, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Singapore and near Tanzania, up to 95% of all corals in shallow reef zones died. In other coastal zones of the tropical belt, from 20 to 70% of corals underwent the same fate. In the early 2000s, the tragedy repeated itself twice, affecting especially the central and southern parts of the Pacific Ocean, and by the middle of the 2000s, according to scientists, a little less than half of the previously existing reefs remained on Earth.

But not in all reef areas the situation is so catastrophic. For example, in the Maldives, the coral cover was completely restored due to the rapid growth of acroporids (acropor corals), whose growth reaches 20–25 cm per year. The fact is that the Maldivian reefs represent fairly balanced ecosystems, the negative human impact on which is not yet very great. A different picture is observed in the region of Bahrain and Sri Lanka, where the reefs were under very strong anthropogenic pressure, were significantly destabilized and rapidly degraded after exposure to abnormally high temperatures.

Thus, not sharp climatic fluctuations, but a high level of anthropogenic pressure leads to fatal consequences for this ecosystem. The growing negative human impact is especially noticeable on reefs located in areas with a high population density, primarily in the Indo-Australian archipelago, where more than 30% of the coral reefs of the entire World Ocean are concentrated. It is for this reason that in the worst-case scenario, by 2030, the existence of the Great Barrier Reef, located in this region, may be in jeopardy.

Discharges from industrial production and wastewater from settlements, the entry of oil products into the water during offshore oil production, the appearance of fertilizers in the water due to intensive agricultural activities – all these are elements of the most severe anthropogenic pressure on coral ecosystems.

Widespread deforestation in the tropical zone has led to a massive washout of soil during rains, which reduces the transparency of sea water. Increasing water turbidity, coupled with fertilizers, does not give corals a chance to survive in competition with the rapidly breeding harmful algae that inhabit the surface of the corals. So the growth of corals is suppressed, and they degrade.

Intensive fishing has led to the fact that their numbers have decreased ten times relative to the normal values ​​for the reef. From 40 to 70% of all fish (by biomass) on the reef are herbivores. A sharp decrease in their density provokes an active growth of algae, which destabilizes the reef ecosystem. As a result, corals degrade and die, and this whole process can occur within one year.

Of particular concern was the past, but now illegal, fishing with explosives, which destroyed the coral cover of the reef.

Due to the decline in the stocks of traditional species of commercial fish, the ever-growing population in reef areas began to use new groups of reef fish for food: surgeon fish, angel fish, wrasse, parrot fish . ..

The industrial cultivation of large groupers and wrasses (for example, Napoleon fish) that has entered into practice has not reduced the volume of their fishing on reefs, since wild-caught fish is several times more expensive than mariculture. Both its capture and live delivery to restaurants in Asian countries is a very profitable business.

In recent decades, the situation has been aggravated by the uncontrolled catching of reef fish for the aquarium trade (see also “Science and Life” No. 2, 2009). The order for catching aquarium fish is formed by companies from developed countries. It is they who promote marine aquarism among amateurs and constantly expand the markets for wild reef fish. The sprawling network of local firms that has emerged involves the coastal population in “aquarium fishing”. Trade in marine hydrobionts is a super profitable business. Often, local fishermen receive less than 1% of the final cost of the goods for the catch, the rest goes to merchants.

In order to catch large volumes of fish, they began to use means of rapid immobilization, among which was sodium cyanide. Now the use of this poison is prohibited, but the damage done to the reefs over the decades is enormous. However, the immobilization of fish during their catch is not a thing of the past – cyanide was replaced with reversible poisons, an overdose of which also leads to the death of fish. Another barbaric way of fishing is the “muro-ami” method, in which the fish are driven into the net with poles and stones, destroying the corals.

It should be noted that less than 100 out of more than 4,000 species of reef fish are bred under artificial conditions, which is explained by the complexity of their larval development. Therefore, the vast majority of fish for marine aquariums is caught in nature. The same applies to invertebrates. For example, the share of farmed stony corals in the aquarium trade does not even reach 1%.

The scale of the detrimental impact of food and aquarium fish and invertebrate fishery on reefs is clearly visible from the data of the World Organization for Monitoring Coral Systems – Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network, given for the end of the 20th century (see table).

Early Childhood Education History: Theorists & Theories

The history of early childhood education dates back to the 1500s, and it has certainly come a very long way over the years. However, children were being educated long before that. Even the Greek Philosopher Plato had some pretty groundbreaking ideas about how children should be educated.

Early childhood education has a very long and rich history with invaluable contributions from some of the greatest theorists in child development and education. In fact, several are now household words. All of the contributions from these famous early childhood education theorists had value and still do today. In fact, they helped shaped the educational system as we know it.

Early Childhood Theorists

There are so many early childhood theorists, it’s difficult to narrow the scope to just a handful. By the same token, attempting to review each and every one would be a colossal undertaking and, quite frankly, too much to digest in one sitting.

We’ll hit some of the highlights here to see how these men and women shaped education.

1782-1852 – Friedrich Froebel

It is Froebel who is credited with founding kindergarten which was based on his belief that young children need their own space for learning separate from adults – save for the teacher and aides. According to Froebel, “Play is the highest expression of human development in childhood, for it alone is the free expression of what is in a child’s soul.” Simply put, he believed play was absolutely vital in the learning process, especially for young children.

1870–1952 – Maria Montessori

Montessori believed that early childhood learning required a two-prong approach: Educate the child’s senses first, then educate the child’s intellect. Her approach was to view the children as sources of knowledge with the teacher or educator acting as a social engineer. Her hands-on approach to instruction with the learning environment being deemed as vital as the knowledge itself has transformed academic success for many children who did not respond well to traditional classroom methods.

1896-1934 – Lev Vygotsky

Vygotsky believed that social interaction is an important vehicle for child development on linguistic, social, and cognitive levels. He introduced the concept of a teacher as more of a learning facilitator where the child learns by working with someone more capable than the child (typically a teacher or parent). The teacher helps the child with tasks that are just beyond or just within the capability of the child. He also believed that grouping children of mixed ages in a learning environment supports their skill and knowledge acquisition.

1896-1980 – Jean Piaget

Piaget’s theory of learning incorporated his Stages of Development:

  • Birth to about 2 years old – Sensorimotor
  • About the time the child begins talking to around 7 years old – Preoperational
  • About the time the child enters 1st grade until early adolescence – Concrete
  • Adolescence – Formal Operations

He believed that children learn by interacting with their environment actively and directly. He believed that a child’s learning also goes through several stages: assimilation, accommodation, and equilibration. This is how they process new information and make it useable to them.

1902-1994 – Erik Erikson

Erikson’s psychosocial theory (among others) has been a foundational concept in early childhood education for years. He emphasized that parents and educators are each integral in supporting and encouraging the success a child has in life at every psychosocial stage of development. By providing the support that is appropriate for the stage, it results in a positive learning experience. He also believed that older children’s social emotional development goes hand in hand with the development and subsequent success of early childhood curriculum.

There are many other great minds that helped shape our educational system and lend a deeper understanding of early learning in children. It is well worth exploring this further when developing a personal teaching style.

Father of Early Childhood Education

The true roots of early childhood education are not entirely clear. There are several names that are noted when discussing the father, or founder, of early childhood education. The truth is many great minds have laid stones for that path. However, there are a few that rise to the top.

Martin Luther is often given credit for having one of the earliest ideas of educating children. In the 1500s most people were illiterate. Luther believed in universal education, emphasizing that it strengthens the person, the family, and the community. His belief that children should be taught to read on their own was so that they would have independent access to the holy scriptures in the Bible.

Jean Rousseau is another who is credited with being a founder of early childhood education – and he did provide some substantial contributions. Many of Rousseau’s educational principles are still used in today’s classrooms. His viewpoint was that education should be child-centered and provide unlimited experiences that are sensory-driven and practical. His belief that measuring, singing, drawing, and speaking should be incorporated into education is the reason that they are present in schools today.

Friedrich Froebel is another who is given a great deal of credit for his contributions to early childhood education and child care. He is believed to be the founder of kindergarten but his beliefs in how young children should be educated also impact today’s classroom. Because of those theories, young children are taught through play in addition to more conventional methods, providing positive experiences for learning.

Theories of Early Childhood Education

There are many different theories of early childhood education. These theories have led to styles of education that are still seen in the classroom today. Several have become highly specialized teaching methods and even have their own accrediting bodies to prevent scams and keep schools from teaching the method improperly or not operating fully within the method.

These are some of the more popular methods that have been embraced by educators and are widely known by not only teachers and those involved in education, but also by parents and other laypersons. At the very least, many of the terms or names are recognizable.

Self-Directed Learning – Montessori | Maria Montessori

In the Montessori classroom, the focus is on the child interacting with the materials and the teacher is more of a facilitator as opposed to most traditional classrooms where the focus is on the child interacting with the teacher. Children learn by the experience of observing and doing various activities and tasks, including life skills like gardening, zipping, and cutting. Instead of being taught, they are led by the teacher to materials and activities that are suited for the child. In the classroom, children are free to move about, select activities, and pursue things that interest them at their own pace.

Classroom as the “Third Teacher” – Reggio Emilia | Loris Malaguzzi

This highly creative learning environment focuses on the child’s interests and encourages intellectual development through creative outlets like painting, dramatic play, drawing, sculpting, working in clay, and conversing. The classroom is carefully designed with an emphasis on the look and feel which enhances the child’s learning experience and is often called the “third teacher.” The objective is to create a classroom that is stimulating, joyful, beautiful, and inviting. Teachers use photographs, videos, and notes to document the children’s activities, remarks, and discussions. Learning is made visible this way and it gives parents greater insight into what their children are learning. Children learn that their work is valuable and important while teachers form stronger bonds with their students and get to know them better.

Plan-Do-Review Process – High/Scope | Dave Weikart and Connie Kamii

The High/Scope program operates on a play-based premise with learning geared to the child’s current developmental stage. It is intended to promote positive experiences in learning and constructive processes that aim to broaden and grow emerging social and intellectual skills. High/Scope classrooms are made up of several learning centers that include math, building, music, science, dramatic play, writing, reading, art, and motor development. The educational style is the “plan-do-review” model. Each day the children discuss with the teacher how they will plan their day. They then follow their plan and, at the end of the day, review what they did with their teacher.

Hands-On Exploration – Waldorf | Rudolf Steiner

The Waldorf program is designed to educate with a whole-child approach (“head, heart, and hands”). Children are allowed to be children in this program because of its overarching philosophy that all phases of child development take time and there is time for them. It also asserts that the formal education of a child should not begin until after their 7th birthday. The learning in the program is hands-on and achieved by exploring many different avenues including singing, cooking, dress-up, storytelling, puppet shows, art projects, and play. Each group of children has the same teacher from preschool, up through eighth grade. The learning focus is on self-discovery and sensory exploration with an aim to instill a sense of responsibility and compassion in the children.

Learning by Doing – Bank Street | John Dewey

This developmental approach is based on Dewey’s theory of “learning by doing.” The focus is the child’s growth physically, emotionally, socially, and mentally. Social skills are important, and it is definitely an area of interest in this program. In these preschools, the child actively learns by using experience to gain knowledge. The teacher operates in a facilitator capacity and the child sets the learning pace. The lessons taught are all hands-on activities like dramatic play, clay, puzzles, and building blocks.

How has ECE Changed Over the Years?

There was a time when early childhood education was more relaxed and informal. The children played and learned in an environment with little academic pressure and virtually no competition. Over the years, as education has become more formalized, these things have been introduced into the classroom.

Children are entering school as young as three or four years old. Often, they are required to sit quietly and learn via various exercises that are often typically only considered to be appropriate for older children.

As academic success has become more of a priority the push has been for better grades, earlier milestones, and more challenging metrics. However, many of the “old” programs that just let kids be kids, encouraging play as a teacher, and allowing for more creative, hands-on learning are a welcome sight.

5 Theories of Child Development

Experts in medicine and science have marveled for decades over the ways in which children develop as well as the best route for healthy development.  This fascinating area of study continues to yield many questions:

  • What affects child development?
  • At which ages is development most susceptible to external effects?
  • What can be done to maximize child growth and minimize detriments to it?

Of course, this is just a sampling of what researchers wonder about when they consider the processes of child development. But because there are so many factors that influence the development of a child and so many questions about what influences child development, many different theories about this subject have been postulated over the years. Genetic and environmental factors can encourage healthy development as well as cause developmental delays. There has been a great deal of research done by national institutes that can help us understand child development and the factor’s that contribute to this during a child’s life.  

However, some theories of child development are more widely known, accepted, and used to describe how children learn and grow than others. Five of these theories are explored in detail below.

Erikson’s Psychosocial Developmental Theory

Erik Erikson was an important figure in the fields of psychoanalytic and psychological development. He was also famously known for coining the popular phrase “identity crisis”. His work on child development has been studied and considered since 1959.

Central to much of his work was his theory on psychosocial development (which, unlike Freud’s theory of development, focuses on social development and not sexual development). As it became known, Erikson’s Psychosocial Developmental Theory produced a framework for organizing human growth, through all stages of life, into eight distinct stages:

  • Stage 1: Trust vs. Mistrust
  • Stage 2: Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt
  • Stage 3: Initiative vs. Guilt
  • Stage 4: Industry vs. Inferiority
  • Stage 5: Identity vs. Role Confusion
  • Stage 6: Intimacy vs. Isolation
  • Stage 7: Generativity vs. Stagnation
  • Stage 8: Integrity vs. Despair

Key to the outcomes of the child stages as well as those afterward are the principles of social interaction and experience.

Each of these stages correspond with a different period of human development. For example, Trust vs. Mistrust coincides with infancy, a period in which babies learn who and what to trust and who and what not to trust. Erikson believed that babies who receive good care during this stage will learn to trust others and that this trust would carry over into future relationships, allowing for healthy child development. 

But, babies whose needs are not met by their caregivers may have feelings of mistrust and suspicion in future relationships.  

By contrast, the eighth stage of Erikson’s psychosocial theory of development, Integrity vs. Despair, coincides with the final years of the lifespan. Unlike in the first stage in which humans learn to trust or not trust others, this stage is marked by reflection on what we accomplished over the course of our lives. If we can look back with pride on living a good and decent life, we will develop feelings of integrity. However, if a retrospective of our accomplishments garners regret, we might live out the rest of our days feeling unfulfilling, bitter, and in despair.

Erikson’s theory was an important turning point in our understanding of human development. Some theories posited that adulthood and late adulthood are relatively meaningless from a development standpoint, at least when compared to all that changes during infancy, childhood, and early adulthood.

But Erikson was adamant that developmental milestones occur across the lifespan. His theory is reflective of that and is accepted as a more realistic view of human development, emotional growth, and social change.

Bowlby’s Attachment Theory

John Bowlby was another groundbreaking psychologist and theorist in matters of development. He also crafted one of the earliest known child development theories which still sees prominent use and citation today.

In Bowlby’s Attachment Theory, he asserted that much of child development is based on the innate need of children to form attachments. These attachments may involve any number of people, places, or things and ultimately have a substantial effect on the developmental patterns a person experiences throughout their life.

Bowlby was a psychoanalyst like Freud, and as such, he placed a lot of importance on early childhood and how experiences during that period of life could determine whether or not a child would grow up to have significant mental health problems.

His theory is strongly rooted in evolutionary psychology – he believed that humans, like any other animal, are biologically predisposed to form attachments to others as a survival mechanism. He believed that children have a two-and-a-half-year window (which he called the “critical period”) to form strong attachments to others and a five-year window during which children are “sensitive” to forming attachments.

Bowlby believed that children that do not form attachments during the critical period or sensitive period are likely to not form strong attachments at all. What’s more, he posited that infants who experience consistent interruptions in their attachment experiences with their primary caregivers will potentially have significant emotional, social, and cognitive deficits as adults.

In other words, this theory suggests that infants form a working model of understanding themselves, other people, and the world in general based on the relationship they have with their caregiver, be that their mother, father, or someone else. His groundbreaking work on child development seems to be more popular than ever. 

Freud’s Psychosexual Developmental Theory

According to Encyclopedia Britannica, Sigmund Freud “may justly be called the most influential intellectual legislator of his age.” While creating the modern field of psychoanalysis, Freud also went on to make many other significant contributions to the sciences including the assertion of his Psychosexual Developmental Theory which tackles the stages of child development. 

Freud’s theory of psychosexual development was one of the most important psychological theories of the 20th century. Freud explained that child experiences, experienced at different ages in childhood, directly dictate personality and behavior patterns in the later adult. He explained that childhood experiences are intensely linked to healthy development for children. According to Freud, childhood development follows five distinct stages:

  • Oral Stage
  • Anal Stage
  • Phallic Stage
  • Latent Stage
  • Genital Stage

Like Erikson’s theory described earlier, Freud’s stages correspond with specific developmental stages in the lifespan. For example, the oral stage corresponds with infancy (birth to one year of age) and is identified by the child’s oral-fixated behaviors. Babies explore the world with their mouths, including breast or bottle feeding.

According to Freud, these stages of a child’s development are centered around sexual development. So, babies in the oral stage gain a lot of satisfaction from putting items in their mouths – their fingers, toys, and the like. That’s because he believed that the libido at this stage is centered in the mouth.

Where personality development comes in is when people get stuck in a stage. So, people with an oral fixation in adulthood gain satisfaction from oral stimulation through any number of activities. They might be chronic smokers, suck their thumbs, or bite their fingernails. These behaviors often manifest when the person is under stress.

If it isn’t obvious, the focus of the libido moves around according to the stage of development. It moves from the mouth to the anus, then to the phallic stage when children begin to explore their autoerotic desires. This is followed by a latency period in which there is little motivation to engage in sexual thoughts or activities. Freud’s theory concludes with the genital stage, which he believed occurs from puberty through adulthood during which people explore sexual activities with others.

Another layer to Freud’s theory is the development of the id, ego, and superego. Freud believed that the id was instinctual and primitive. It is something we are born with and the mechanism that controls our sexual drives. The id is often unrealistic and impulsive.

The ego develops during the first few years of life and represents reality. For this reason, the id and ego are often at odds – the id wants what it wants and it wants it now, regardless of how realistic or unrealistic it might be. The ego, then, is the go-between that balances the id’s impulses and the demands of the real world. Freud believed that the ego was responsible for decision-making and reason.

The superego develops during the phallic stage and is the source of morality. Our morals, according to Freud, are learned from our parents or other caregivers. Since the superego is meant to control the id and ego, it helps tamp down the id’s desires while also helping the ego recognize morals-based goals rather than constantly striving for perfection. 

Likewise, the superego can be thought of as our conscience. It’s what makes us feel guilty when we do something wrong and what rewards us with feelings of pride or joy when we do something right. Freud’s work and theories around a child’s development are respected and studied across the world.

Bandura’s Social Learning Theory

Albert Bandura’s Social Learning Theory is commonly relied upon today across many industries and professions. This theory states that while much child learning and child development does come from direct experience, much also comes from modeling and simple observations of people around you.

Additionally, Bandura posited that the modeling we do of others isn’t limited to behaviors, but also includes attitudes and emotional reactions in various situations. Therefore, this theory takes into account both cognitive and environmental factors in determining how children learn and learn to behave.

Modeling is a simple enough process. Children note how their parents and other important figures in their lives behave, and children encode that information. Later on, children might imitate the behavior that has been modeled. So, if a child sees their parent strike the family dog for barking, the child might encode that behavior, think it’s okay to hit others when they are mad, and exhibit a similar behavior in the future.

Bandura built his theory on the foundation of classical and operant conditioning. For example, if a child exhibits a behavior that they encoded from a model, and that behavior is met with a reward, the child is more likely to exhibit that behavior in the future. A caregiver that claps and baby talks to an infant that begins to crawl is reinforcing that behavior with positive rewards.

On the other hand, if a child engages in a behavior that is met with a consequence (e.g., a parent yelling at them for striking the dog), they will be less likely to continue that behavior because it was met with a punishment.

Where Bandura broke from strict behaviorist approaches is in his position that the environment was just one determinant for how we learn and behave. Instead, Bandura posited that our intrinsic motivations and even our current mental state have much to do with our ability to learn and how we behave.

Piaget’s Cognitive Developmental Theory

Piaget’s Cognitive Developmental Theory states that children, quite simply, think differently than adults. While this may seem obvious to some, this was a revolutionary theory that went on to provide the foundations for several other theories to come. Piaget’s theory on a child’s development being tied to their developmental milestones has gone on to be one of the top theories in the world. 

Essentially, this theory divided the child life into four separate categories, or stages, each of which carries its own important qualities and vulnerabilities:

  • Sensorimotor stage: Birth to two years
  • Preoperational stage: 2 to 7 years
  • Concrete operational stage: 7 to 11 years
  • Formal operational stage: ages 12 and up

According to Piaget, each of these stages was marked by a specific developmental goal. Object permanence (the ability to understand that an object that is out of sight still exists) is the goal of the sensorimotor stage. Meanwhile, the goal of the preoperational stage is symbolic thought, or the ability to think using symbols and images.

The third stage – concrete operational – the goal is for children to develop logical thought. This is characterized by the ability to solve problems in a more adult-like, logical fashion. However, children in this stage might still struggle with abstract thought and only be able to solve problems that have concrete meaning.

It isn’t until the formal operational stage that the ability to undertake abstract thought begins to develop. Likewise, Piaget believed that the formal operational stage marked the beginning of one’s ability to use logic to test hypotheses.

Which Theory of Child Development is Right?

These theories of child development are all very different from one another and take different avenues for explaining how we learn, behave, and develop. Children begin life with genetic factors that may affect their cognitive development and emotional development. Whether or not their guardians are the ones who passed on these genes, their roles as guardians may carry more weight than they ever could have realized. As children start to see, hear, understand, and interact, they also respond to the emotional factors around them. While all of these theories are based around developmental milestones, the main areas of early childhood, and factors that we can likely all relate to, we may all have a different belief system. 

And while it might be tempting to ask which one is right, that isn’t a question that can be answered – each theory has, in its own right, many useful applications for studying human behavior. One theory might be better suited to a specific situation than another. Multiple theories might be used simultaneously to explain how children develop as well.

The study of child development is a vastly important one that helps us to understand the greater process of human development. Just like in any other scientific discipline, theories like these are some of the critical pillars of psychology and the study of child development.

The goal of the Department of Theory and Methods of Primary and Preschool Education is to provide educational institutions in the region with qualified and competitive personnel with professional competencies in the field of preschool and primary education.

The Department of TimNiDO is a graduate in the following areas of training:

Currently, work is underway to train specialists in the field of preschool and primary education in various forms: full-time, part-time, in the system of advanced training and retraining of personnel, pedagogical support for innovative processes in the regional system of preschool and primary education in the context of education modernization.

The priority areas of activity of the department are:

– creation of conditions to meet the needs of students in raising the level of professional knowledge;

– training of highly qualified specialists with deep theoretical and necessary practical knowledge;

– methodological support of the educational process and the practical application of modern educational technologies;

– meeting the needs of educational institutions in advanced training and retraining of their personnel;

– scientific and methodological support of innovative processes in the regional system of preschool and primary education in the context of education modernization;

– dissemination of scientific, pedagogical and cultural knowledge among the population.

Developed scientific topics:

– Traditions and innovations in education.

– Monitoring the formation of universal educational activities in the context of the introduction of the Federal State Educational Standard in an educational organization.

– Implementation of a meta-subject approach to the organization of a modern lesson.

– An activity approach to organizing classes with preschoolers and younger students.

The department is the organizer of annual international and all-Russian scientific and methodological conferences on the problems of modern organization of education in preschool, primary, secondary and higher educational institutions, has experimental sites for developing education and for the formation of health-saving competencies among students of a pedagogical university based on a humane-personal approach to children .

The most important direction of the work of the scientific team is the activation and strengthening of international cooperation with scientists and teachers of the University of Reims, Champagne-Ardenne, France in the aspect of training future primary school teachers. International cooperation allows teachers of the department to exchange advanced pedagogical experience, to be published in leading foreign publications.

The department actively operates a regional innovation platform “Improving work with highly motivated and gifted students. Measures to support gifted children and youth: experience of practical implementation”, in which leading teachers of the department and faculty of Pedagogy and Psychology take part. Teachers of schools in the region, namely, the cities of Naberezhnye Chelny, Nizhnekamsk, Yelabuga, Almetyevsk, Leninogorsk, Zainsk, etc., receive scientific and methodological support for capable students in the process of cooperation; learn to build an individual development trajectory; develop educational programs and control and measuring materials for the diagnosis of UUD of schoolchildren. In addition, work is underway on the program “Rural Teacher in the Conditions of Modern Educational Space”, the purpose of which is to organize a resource/consultation center for teachers in rural schools.

Thus, while maintaining the previously established educational, methodological and research traditions, the modern educational, scientific and innovative policy of the Department of TiMNiDO is to ensure the training of specialists, scientific and scientific and pedagogical personnel at the level of world qualification requirements, the effective use of educational, scientific, technical and innovative potential .

Free, lottery-funded Pre-K for 2019-2020 school year

This free, state-funded Pre-K at some Savannah-Chatham public schools is open to all children who are 4 years old on or before Sept. 1 residing in Chatham County.

The Savannah-Chatham County Public School System has 63 Georgia Lottery funded Pre-K classes.  See the list of Savannah-Chatham public schools that offer the free Pre-K here.

Pre-K applications for the free, lottery-funded Pre-K programs for 2019-20 at Savannah-Chatham County public schools will be available online here Tuesday, February 20-March 7, 2019.

The 2019-2020 Lottery will run in April 2019.

Oglethorpe Charter School(Middle School, 6th-8th grades) Application process is open. The application can be printed from Oglethorpe Charter School Web site or picked up from the school.

Applications for entry into the 2018-19 lottery will be accepted from December 1, 2017 until January 16, 2018. Applications must be completed and hand-delivered to OCS.

The 2019-2020 lottery will be conducted in the Martha Giddens Nesbit Theatre at OCS in early 2019. The lottery results will be posted on OCS’s website.

    Childhood and family

    The boy, born in the spring of 1931 in the family of Stavropol peasants Sergei Gorbachev and Maria Gopkalo, was named Victor, but at baptism the priest gave him the name Mikhail.

    Russian father and Ukrainian mother lived without frills, worked from morning to evening on the collective farm. Until that time, until it was time to go to school, little Misha grew up and was brought up by his grandparents – Pantelei Efimovich and Vasilisa Lukyanovna Gopkalo.

    Misha was ten years old when the war began. The father went to the front, and the rest of the family was left to wait, then the invaders came to the village for an endlessly long five months. In his book I Remain an Optimist, Gorbachev much later recalled:

    Rumors began to come about mass executions in neighboring cities, about some cars poisoning people with gas (after the liberation, all this was confirmed: thousands of people, mostly Jews, were shot in the city of Mineralnye Vody), about the impending reprisal against the families of communists. We understood that the first on this list would be our family members. And my mother and grandfather Andrei hid me on a farm outside the village. The massacre seemed to be scheduled for January 26, 1943 years old, and on January 21 our troops liberated Privolnoye.

    The liberation of the village came along with a message about the death of foreman Sergei Gorbachev. Relatives experienced great relief when it turned out that the notification was a mistake, and their son, husband and father were alive, moreover, twice the Order of the Red Star and had a medal “For Courage”, which he received for crossing the Dnieper.

Young Misha admired his father, a simple village collective farmer. According to him, nature itself laid in Sergei Andreevich innate intelligence, inquisitiveness, a sharp mind, humanity, which distinguished the father of the future Secretary General from other villagers. And he always had their respect.

    As a tenth-grader, Mikhail was recommended as a candidate for membership in the CPSU, and after receiving a certificate, nineteen-year-old Gorbachev without entrance exams (such a privilege was given by a state award) became a student at the Faculty of Law of Moscow State University. The young man was struck by the capital, its scale and power. Everything was a first for him. Michael with excitement got to know the huge and beautiful Moscow. Later in his book he writes:

    Later, in the fourth year, we will move to the Lenin Hills, we will live two people in a block, for a week, or even two, without getting out of the “noble nest” into the city. And then we lived on Stromynka, freshmen, twenty-two people in one room, in the second year – eleven, in the third – six.

    As a candidate member of the CPSU, the young man was immediately elected the leader of the Komsomol course, and then the faculty. Two more years later, Gorbachev becomes a full-fledged communist, so that at 1955, after graduating with honors, return to the Stavropol Regional Prosecutor’s Office for distribution.

    He stayed there for a short time: Mikhail, on his own initiative, was invited to the post of deputy department of agitation and propaganda of the regional committee of the Komsomol. In five years, his career advanced to the post of first secretary of the regional committee of the Komsomol.

    In 1961, Mikhail Gorbachev was delegated to the Extraordinary XXII Congress of the Communist Party. Soon he becomes the head of the department, and at 19In 1966, he headed the city committee of the party.     Welcome to Our School

    Welcome to our Childtime educational daycare, located in Rahway, NJ! My name is Krystle and I am the Center Director. I have a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Kean University and ten years of experience in early childhood education.

    We offer care for children ages six weeks to six years of age through our Infant care, Preschool and other age-specific programs. Each classroom offers age-appropriate activities that not only help to build on existing skills, but also allow children to learn new ones.

    Our teachers come from a variety of different experiences and educational backgrounds and together, have more than 75 years of teaching experience. Once a month, our staff comes together for training in a variety of different topics, and they also attend an annual Professional Development Day. We value our relationships with our families and work hard at keeping an open line of communication.

    2021-12-03 2021-12-22 3A:52-5.3(a)(19) Physical plant requirements for all centers
    Indoor maintenance and sanitation requirements are as follows: the center shall test for the presence of radon gas in each classroom on the lowest floor level used by children at least once every five years and shall post the test results in a prominent location in all buildings at the center, as specified in N. J.S.A. 30:5B-5.2.

    Environmental condition precautions are as follows: at the time of the initial application, any renewal application, relocation of an existing licensed center, and, as determined by the Office of Licensing, on a case-by-case basis, the facility operator shall submit to the Office of Licensing a Safe Building Interior Certification or other approval issued by the Department of Health that indicates that no further remediation is needed for the interior of the building in which the center is located.

    First aid requirements are as follows: at least two staff members who have current certified basic knowledge of first aid principles and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), as defined by a recognized health organization (such as the American Red Cross), shall be in the center at all times when enrolled children are present.

    Violation Observed: Provide current training for at least 2 staff in First Aid and CPR.

    2021-06-29 2021-10-06 3A:52-4.9(a) Special requirements to prevent child abuse and neglect
    The sponsor, sponsor representative, director, or any staff member shall verbally notify the State Central Registry Hotline (1-877 NJ ABUSE/1-877-652-2873) immediately whenever there is reasonable cause to believe that a child has been subjected to abuse or neglect by a staff member, or any other adult, pursuant to N. J.S.A. 9:6-8.9, 8.10, 8.13 and 8.14.
