Why Des Moines will surprise you, and why young professionals love it.

By ls2group

When you think of destination cities for 20-year-olds, the usual suspects come to mind – Seattle, San Francisco, Chicago or Washington DC. I’m pretty sure most people in the US don’t yell “Des Moines!” when discussing promising cities. In fact, young people across the country are beginning to realize the allure and benefits that Des Moines has to offer.

With a metro population of around 600,000, you simply won’t have access to the same professional sports experience or big concert and performance venues that the big metros have. So yes, it’s frustrating, but many feel that Des Moines more than makes up for the lack of “main” attractions with its high standard of living, unique cuisine, budding nightlife, and career opportunities.

I am 25 years old and have lived in Des Moines for two years. As an Iowa native, even I was surprised by how much Des Moines actually has to offer. Recently, Des Moines has been widely recognized in the country as a promising destination for young people. Forbes, Fortune and today’s show.

Let’s find out why Des Moines has become a popular choice for young professionals in recent years.

Jobs, Jobs, Jobs

Perhaps the most attractive aspect of Des Moines is the work and career opportunities for young professionals. Iowa is certainly known for its agriculture, but our economy is far more diversified than that. Iowa’s agricultural economy is certainly heavily represented in Des Moines by John Deere and DuPont Pioneer, among others. In fact, today agriculture accounts for 10 percent of the nation’s domestic product, while biotechnology, manufacturing, and financial services contribute more to our economy. Agricultural production is still rampant – we are still exporting $11 billion + Ag goods. Des Moines is also a well-established financial services center with employers such as Chief Financial, Wells Fargo and Nationwide based significant manufacturing facilities here.

Biotechnology is a growing sector in Iowa employing over 15,000 people with many opportunities in the Greater Des Moines area.

Des Moines was also recently named America’s “Richest” city. What does it mean? This is where your dollar goes next. Our housing market is ultra-competitive, which means more young people can invest in a home and get more value for their money.

Iowa is an example of stability, which is an important factor for many young families and individuals looking to start their careers. We recently ranked number one in the ranking of the third best condition in the country. This means that our financial responsibility and strong economic base will continue to attract high-paying jobs for the foreseeable future.

All of these economic factors are slowly merging with another key component to make Des Moines a destination for young professionals. What is this last key ingredient? It’s really fun. Who would have thought? Let’s dive into that part, shall we?

Downtown

Fortune magazine recently ranked Des Moines #1 for prospective recessions. I live in the city center and I can tell you that the best thing about it is that it is easy to navigate, not too big and has a lot of things in a small area. I can honestly walk from one end to the other in about 25 minutes (or use the extensive crosswalk system in winter). Wells Fargo Arena hosts solid concerts from Taylor Swift to Jason Aldean, as well as sporting events like the NCAA March Madness 2016 first round.0003

eat

We were also recently voted the best gourmet city.

If you are in town for business or want to impress on a date, I would recommend a posh place like Django with great food, drinks, atmosphere and location. It is also perfect for celebrating special occasions and is affordable.

Do you feel the mood for a little Latin? Des Moines has your back. Malo is a new downtown restaurant with a unique menu and stunning patio.

Little done!

This is a great place for happy hour or casual dinner with friends. I had only good experiences there.

If you like Italian food, another place anyone familiar with Des Moines (or good food in general) will direct you to is Latin King. I could write a separate article about how great Latin King is, but to save you time, I’ll just say that you won’t find better Italian food. Period. So do yourself a favor and just walk away.

Bars

Des Moines may not have a bar or club as exclusive as the Roxbury…but if you’re looking for a good mix of really fun bars, Des Moines is hard to beat.

My old trusty El Bait Shop. Great craft beer selection, nice people and a fun patio right in the city center – El Bait has it all. Beer for me.

Hessen Haus – Old German beer hall experience. This is a great place to start your evening and enjoy Das Boot filled with German beer with friends.

Wellman’s Rooftop – Although not downtown, Wellman’s is the anchor of another entertainment district located in West Des Moines, with several unique bars including a comedy club and dueling piano bar. The Wellman Rooftop Patio is large and always full of people on summer evenings.

Breweries

Exile – Exile is the bee’s knees. This is a great place to not only enjoy mild local beers, but also to dine or chat. I would recommend Exile Ruthie Gold Lager.

Confluence Brewing Co. – In Des Moines, Confluence is famous for good beer. Find a growler and stock up on his signature Iowa beer.

These are just some of my favorites. I also frequent some of the dive bars such as Carl’s Place on Sherman Hill or The Copper Cup on Court Avenue to sample the delicious Moscow Mule.

Historic East Village

LS2group Calls Home.

Located across the Des Moines River, in the heart of our city, is Historic East Village. Over the past few years, major renovations and investment have combined to create a unique working, shopping and entertainment district. The East Village is home to the amazing Capitol building, as well as a growing number of new apartments and townhouses for young professionals. There are many good boutiques for ladies like Wanderlust, along with other great stores like Fleet Feet Sports for athletes. Here are a few highlights:

BEAM GUN, The greatest store in the universe – this store is something else. Whether you’re looking for a smart shirt, coffee mug, or even a kid’s gift, RAYGUN has you covered. Literally.

Olympic Flame – This little Greek bistro serves solid gyro dishes. I really like their salads and the staff is cheerful.

Baratta’s – Located on the rooftop of the State Historical Museum, this cafe is my favorite place to dine and has the best view in Des Moines of the Capitol and downtown. If you are here for work, I highly recommend!

Up Down – Want to play Mario Cart, Classic Pinball or Mortal Combat while enjoying a drink? Up Down is the place for you. This is an interesting place to start (or end) a weekend. With a life-size Jenga or a skiball, you can have a lot of fun. Up-Down definitely has an old school feel, but everyone I know loves it.

Outdoors

While Des Moines is located in close proximity to several solid boating lakes, the only recreational area Des Moines really sets itself apart is the investment in high-quality bike trails.

High Trestle Trail

Des Moines is a great place to cycle. Demand for amenities and services for cyclists has grown, making cycling here even more attractive. Greater Des Moines has over 600 miles of connected route systems. Des Moines public buses have even been fitted with bike racks to make it easier to commute and access leisure.

Developers take note of the growing popularity of cycling. Entertainment, restaurants, bars and craft breweries are popping up all over the city, especially along the trails.

Cycling becomes an integral part of the city. For the past thirty years, the Mayor of Des Moines has hosted an annual Mayor’s Race and Run competition that raises money to improve and expand trails. Des Moines made cycling more accessible to the average rider. Modeled after the successful Vélib program in Paris, the B-cycle bike sharing program has made bike sharing in the city cheap and convenient.

Cycling in the city center is also fun!

Other Best Experiences

Iowa State Fair – More than a million full-blooded Americans come to Des Moines each summer for high cholesterol, music and beer.

80-35 Music Festival – This growing music festival has been attracting better shows and bigger crowds year after year.

Des Moines Arts Festival – Thousands of art lovers – and people like me who love to walk around, tossing up words like “art deco” and “minimalism” to get a sense of fantasy, flock downtown to view and buy art art around the sculpture garden in June.

Zoo Brew – Every Wednesday night in the summer, Blank Park Zoo becomes a playground for young people. Beer and watch cute animals? Sales.

Des Moines Farmers Market – Des Moines Farmers Market is packed every Saturday from spring to October. Enjoy local produce and specialties from all over Iowa at street vendors. Attention… most weekends are full here!

Iowa Caucus

Every four years, Iowa becomes the center of the political universe, and Des Moines is the center of all candidates, campaigns, and national political reporters. This is the only place in the country where you can choose a day of the week to meet a governor or senator running for president and get to know them by name. If you are a political junkie, Des Moines is the best option.

Conclusion: Des Moines is pretty nice.

We are well versed in insurance, politics and food. If you were looking for a place to start your career and enjoy it, I would say that Des Moines can rival most major metros. The key, of course, is to find your happiness wherever you live, but Des Moines offers many amenities and opportunities to help you get there.

AMERICA’S MOST ACCREDITED

We’re so proud!

Nationally only 10% of daycares are accredited – nearly 100% of our learning centers are. That’s a big difference,
and that means KinderCare kids are getting the very best. Here’s why.

SCHOOL-READY

What Learning Looks Like

Our talented early-childhood teachers set kids down the path toward becoming lifelong learners in a positive, safe, and nurturing environment.

Gambrills KinderCare Programs

Infant Programs (6 weeks–1 year)

Leaving your baby in someone else’s care is a big step. Everyone at our
centers—most importantly, our naturally gifted infant teachers—will work with
you to make sure the transition goes smoothly. When you step into our infant
classroom, you’ll see how much we want your infant to feel safe, loved, and
ready to explore their world.

Toddler Programs (1–2 Years)

Everything in our toddler classroom is designed for little explorers. That’s
because a lot is going on at this age. When your child is wandering all over the
place, that means they’re learning and discovering new things every day. We’ll
help them explore their interests (and find new ones!) as they play and learn.

Discovery Preschool Programs (2–3 Years)

This age is filled with so much wonder and curiosity. That’s why we offer a ton
of books and toys and bring artwork down to kids eye level. Children in
discovery preschool also begin to learn how we all work together in a
classroom. Simple math and science, pretend play, and group play help them
get used to a more structured school setting.

Preschool Programs (3–4 Years)

This age is all about expression, when kids really start to form their own ideas
about what they want to play and how they want to create. Every day in our
preschool classroom, your child will explore science experiments, create
artwork, and play pretend—all the skills needed for their big next step:
kindergarten!

Prekindergarten Programs (4–5 Years)

When you walk into one of our pre-K classrooms, you’ll see artwork and
writing displayed around the room. Labels are everywhere to help kids connect
letters with words. You’ll also see pictures on the walls that reflect the families
in our community. Your child will also deepen their knowledge in language,
math, science, Spanish, and social skills.

Before- and After-School Programs (5–12 Years)

You can count on us to provide reliable care for your school-ager while you’re
at work, with safe transportation from our center to your child’s school and
back! Whether your child wants to start a drama club, build a volcano, or
create a comic book, they will have a place to follow their dreams. Your child
will start and end the day with a whole lot of fun!

School Break Programs (preschool, prekindergarten, and school-age)

Winter break, spring break, summer break—when school’s out (but you still need to work), you
can count on KinderCare to provide a safe and supportive learning environment that’s focused
on fun. We welcome children ages 5–12 during school break times and make sure they have a
sensational, screen-free experience they won’t forget.

Participating Child Care Aware Center

KinderCare partners with Child Care Aware® of America to offer fee assistance for
Active Duty military families and flexible support to fit their needs when care at a Child
Development Center on the installation is not available.

Learning Adventures – Enrichment Program

Cooking Academy™ (3 – 12 Years)

In Cooking Academy, kids learn new recipes from cultures around the world and
develop a healthy relationship with food. They’ll whip up everything from Southwest
rainbow lettuce wraps to pumpkin muffins, building their skills in STEM, communication,
and more along the way. And yes—little chefs get to eat their culinary creations!

Music Explorers™ (2 – 4 Years)

KinderCare families are already giving a standing ovation to our newest Learning
Adventures program: Music Explorers! Kids will learn to sing, move, listen, play
instruments, and even create their own tunes. Our original curriculum blends math,
science, social studies, literacy, and mindfulness (think yoga!) for a uniquely KinderCare
way of learning the foundations of music.

Phonics Adventures® (2 – 4 Years)

Learning how to read is a whole lot of fun at KinderCare! We help kids grow to love
books and words (and get ready for kindergarten) in our Phonics Adventures program.
From discovering the basics of vowels to practicing poetry, kids learn all about letters
and sounds in small-group lessons made just for their age group. (Bonus: Kids who
attend our phonics program are more prepared than their peers for school—and we
have the data to prove it.)

Spanish

Spanish Adventures provides young learners with a foundation for later success with
the Spanish language. Music, games, children’s Spanish literature, and other tools give
children multiple opportunities to hear, practice, and see Spanish language to develop
vocabulary and conversation skills. Curriculum includes lessons on greetings, numbers,
colors, animals, family, body parts, and pets, as well as how to engage conversationally
during common scenarios at home, a restaurant, or at the zoo.

STEM Innovators (3-8 Years)

You’ve probably heard a lot about how important STEM education is for your child, but
what does that really mean? Our STEM Innovators program takes kids’ natural ability to
make sense of the world and applies it to robotics, chemistry, coding, geology, and
more. While your child experiments, they’ll discover how to use technology to do
amazing things!

Our Teachers

We’re the only company in early childhood education to select teachers based on natural talent. Being a great educator isn’t enough though.
KinderCare teachers are also amazing listeners, nurturers, boo-boo fixers, and smile-makers. Put more simply,
we love our teachers and your child will, too.

Meet just a few of our amazing KinderCare teachers!

A KINDERCARE TEACHER WITH

An Artist’s Heart

“My classroom is full of art!” says Mary Annthipie-Bane, an award-winning early childhood educator at KinderCare. Art and creative expression, she says, help children discover who they really are.

We put our best-in-class teachers in a best-in-class workplace. We’re so proud to have been named one of Gallup’s 37 winners of the Great Workplace Award.
When you put great teachers in an engaging center, your children will experience
an amazing place to learn and grow.

Family Stories

Don’t take our word for it. Hear what our families have to say about our amazing center!

  • Daniel’s Entry into daycare-
When looking for a center we interviewed Beaver Creek, La Petite, Children’s Center and KinderCare; while there where others on the list we felt there was no need to go any further. From the initial phone call with a friendly yet professional Ellen, to the moment we walked in the door greeted with child focused quotations on the walls and smiling faces at the front desk, we felt comfortable! What truly won us over was the tour of Ms. Tara’s classroom; she was on the floor rolling a ball back and forth to the kids. She spoke to us and answered questions, but never took the focus off the kids in her class. The children came first and we knew our little guy would be in good hands!
    Moving up to “the twos”-
I was worried, who are these new people that are going to be working with my little monster. Are they going to be able to handle the hitting and biting and pushing and crazy that my sweet boy has somehow transformed into? All I can say is thank you … thank you to Ms. Ellen for the extra coaching and to Ms. Tesa, Ms. Bonnie and Ms. Maggie for working with him and loving him! The staff really helped us help him. They laughed with us and sometimes disciplined us (No UFC & no WWF at home), but mostly they encouraged us and let us know we were not alone and it would get better. Daniel loves you guys – At home we have Lego Maggie and Lego Tesa and they live with Lego Daniel in a red, white and blue house with a horse in the front yard that eats Lego carrots … you guys just had stairs installed, it was very exciting. Now if you can just get the potty training thing under control, at home we are obviously inept!
Oh no, there is another one?
You mean I drop off my baby and one teacher is going to deal with three infants? Schedule, we don’t have a schedule! Why do I have to take off my shoes? They are heating up the formula; we don’t do that at home! What do you mean no blankets? … The baby room is crazy!
Day One – Ok maybe I was the crazy one, on the first day I dropped Bailey off I may have found myself back 30 minutes later sitting on the floor with Ms. Lucia talking with her about why my baby is special and what she needs. After 45 minutes of interviewing Lucia and being reassured that she knew what she was doing I went to work and cried.
Half way through the day I called to see how my Bailey was doing and was reassured that she was sleeping comfortably and cozy…and I relaxed.
    Thank you!
We bring the snot and the throw up and the screaming and you guys still deliver smiles and hugs and love! You may never make a ton of money working in daycare, but you make such a difference in so many little lives! THANK YOU!

    Parent – KinderCare Parent
  • We don’t have a choice in having a parent stay home, and its always been a comfort going in to work knowing we didn’t have to worry about the care Liliana receives. We appreciate all the pictures that come home that allow us to share in Liliana’s day, and we love the smiles that greet us when we walk in the door.

Courtney and Ian M. – KinderCare Parent
  • My husband and I enrolled our daughter Nora at KinderCare in January and have continued to be impressed with the professionalism of the staff and the level of care our daughter receives. The time I have spent in the building gives me the impression that the staff members genuinely like one another and enjoy their jobs, and this creates a cheerful atmosphere that Nora and I both appreciate.

    Elizabeth D. – KinderCare Parent
  • I feel like there aren’t enough males in the field already and they are just as valuable. So, it is noticeable. I have to apologize for thinking that there was a security threat at one time because I saw a male teacher trying to get into the back gate (I didn’t know he was a teacher at that time. Also, thank you for hiring competent individuals from more than one culture. I feel very strongly that our children should grow and be around several cultures so they can learn to appreciate everyone from the beginning. We live in a world where so many are at war over race, religion and power struggles between the classes and I bet if they had grown up around and learned to appreciate those from all walks of life, that we’d live in a much better world. I hope that there are opportunities for staff from different cultures share their own cultures with our children. I for one, would love Brooklynn to be exposed to everyone of your staff member’s culture, whether it be through the food/desserts, language, clothing and/or holiday traditions.

    Denise A. – KinderCare Parent
  • When my daughter was born I originally put her in a different daycare. Due to some serious health concerns I pulled her out and put her in a different one. This one didn’t last long either as they told me my daughter is above average when it comes to learning and the other kids cannot keep up with her. Unfortunately, KinderCare did not come into my life until my daughter was 3 years old. I wish I had found them sooner. My daughter is excited to go to school every day and tell me about her day when she comes home.  The reading phonics program has been amazing and my daughter (now 5) is excited to be reading books all by herself.

I also cannot say enough about Miss Mandy the director. My daughter and her daughter seem to be the best of friends and Miss Mandy takes all my concerns very seriously.   All the teachers there have been amazing and very easy to talk to. I love KinderCare and would recommend them to anyone who asks!

    Erin C. – KinderCare Parent
