How to choose infant drool bibs and baby mealtime bibs

When shopping for baby clothing accessories, expecting parents are overwhelmed by selections of infant socks, baby mittens, headbands, bibs, burp clothes, blankets, and newborn hats.   They often wonder “what are the essential items that my baby really needs?”  These new parents are probably told “baby bibs are important and is a must” but often times it wasn’t until they actually reached the throes of parenthood that they realize just how necessary bibs are.  Babies (or even toddlers) can easily go through several bibs a day, and different activities may require a specific type of bib.  So there really isn’t a “best baby bibs” out there that would serve all purposes.  Here we are going to go through the two major categories of bibs, their functions, shapes, and different materials that are used to make the bibs. Hopefully this will help new parents picking out the ideal bibs for their needs. One thing important we must remind everyone again is “buy quality rather than quantity”.

Bibs for teething or drooling

All babies drool.  This is because their oral muscles used to control their drool may not be fully developed until they are 2 years old. The excess drool helps kids to digest food when they start eating solid food.  When they begin teething, drooling intensifies and they may go through couple of bibs in a day.  So it is a good idea to keep a few bibs at home or in the diaper bags.  A drool bib can sop up the spit to keep babies’ clothes getting soaked (and potentially irritating the skin underneath).  It can also be handy to wipe off dribble around their mouth, which can also cause a skin rash.

The size

Baby drool bibs (or some refer them as baby teething bibs) are smaller than feeding-time bibs. The main purpose is to keep the front part of babies’ clothes dry, so basically the bibs size should be just large enough to cover the neck to upper chest part.  You want to make sure they fit well around your baby’s neck and leave no or very little gap so drool doesn’t go down their neck and eventually get to their body.

The fabrics

You want to make sure these bibs are made of absorbent fabrics that also wash easily and last well (you might be washing them daily). Since at this stage, baby’s skin is still delicate, so you want to pick out something that’s soft. Organic cotton baby bibs are a good choice. You can also consider sustainable fabrics such as azlon from soy and rayon from bamboo, these fabrics are softer than cotton and are environmental friendly. Most of drool bibs are double-layered, there are some waterproof baby bibs in the market which has a plastic or polyester lining between the layers.  But we think the regular double layer bibs will do the job.

The fit and style

Cloth bibs : Basically a round piece of fabric with a neck opening using either snaps or Velcro to secure itself on baby’s neck. Simple, machine-washable bibs made from soft, absorbent fabrics.

Bandana bibs :  When you want a bit more style, baby bandana bibs is an option.  They are a good choice for drooly toddlers, since the bandana style looks less babyish. One thing to note is that a bandana bib is a bit more difficult to take off than regular-shaped baby bibs, the positive side is that it will stay on better when your child tries to pull it off, but not so cool when you have a million things to accomplish and trying to remove the bib.

Flower shape bibs Some brands has taken a step further and modified the cloth bibs and turn them into a flower petals shape drool bibs. Although some may consider these to be more of a baby bibs for girls, but we think they are gender neutral and ideal for those that simply want to add a bit of style on top of the traditional shaped bibs.

Bibs for mealtime

Babies and toddlers are known to create a mess when they eat.  So when it comes to keeping formula or food off your baby or toddler’s outfit, any bib is better than nothing. Especially when your baby begins to self-feed, you will find a mealtime bib is important.

The size

Mealtime bibs are typically larger than drool bibs. They offer wider coverage to protect your baby’s clothes and skin from mealtime messes. Ideally, a mealtime bib should at least cover your baby’s entire chest area. If your kids tend to make a real mess, you will find large baby bibs that cover their stomach and arms are a plus.

The fabrics

Mealtime bibs are usually made of waterproof or almost waterproof fabrics. Silicone and plastic are the most common materials used for mealtime bibs. This makes them easy to wipe off or clean after each meal and ready to go on the next. At the end of the day, a quick hand-wash or toss them in the washer and air dry.

Silicone bibs are soft, flexible and waterproof. They can also be wiped clean after mealtime. Make sure you select food-grade silicone, which ensure safety especially for younger children.

Plastic bibs are thinner than silicone bibs but are also waterproof that can be wiped clean. Some have pockets for crumbs, but they don’t always catch as much as silicone bibs. Some options are also big enough to cover a child’s shoulders or lap.

Disposable bibs are single-use made with thin plastic, an option that can be helpful for meals-on-the-go or when you’re traveling.

The fit and style

Feeding-time bibs come in various styles. The first is what we call large baby bibs. They are simply a larger sized traditional drool bibs that covers baby’s whole chest area. The second is the scoop bib. It looks like a traditional bib but with a lip or pocket at the bottom. This pouch catches food, drool, and other debris during mealtime.  The third is smock-style bibs which is a long-sleeved bib that offers full coverage. These bibs are open-back long-sleeved shirts that you can put on and take off for a meal. This added coverage keeps even the messiest baby food free. There are short-sleeved option baby smocks if you feel it would be more comfortable for your baby or toddler. One drawback is that these bibs are more size-specific, your little one may outgrow their pair of smock bibs sooner than you think.

Bibs for newborns

We also came across some new parents asking what about bibs for the newborns?  A bib can keep dribbled breast-milk or formula off of your little one’s clothes during feeding and also help sop up the inevitable spit-up that comes every now and then.   We recommend using drool bibs (as they are smaller) made with either sustainable fabrics like soy fabric or organic cotton as they tend to be softer and less irritating to infants’ delicate skin.  Using snap bibs is better than Velcro as there’s a chance Velcro might scratch your baby.

Other factors to consider

Whether you’re shopping for baby drool bibs or mealtime bibs, besides fit and comfort, colors and patterns is another factor to consider.  Solid colors are an easy option as they would match up to outfits more readily (yes, your baby want to remain stylish even while drooling).  If you like patterns, pick bold and loud patterns, they hide stains better. If you are buying baby gifts, an embroidered baby bib or a monogrammed bib may be a good option to show off personalization!

Genetic analysis – DNA tests on saliva

Genetic analysis of saliva

Absolutely all hereditary information about a person and the program of his development is stored in a chain of genes, which can be studied today by analyzing saliva for genetics.

Fluid produced by salivary glands like blood, hair, nails or urine contains the same set of genes and is excellent for this type of research. Knowing your genetic code enables a person to make his life better and longer. nine0005

The genetic code does not change throughout a person’s life. Therefore, this analysis can be performed both for adults and infants from 2 months.

What saliva DNA can tell:

Describe hereditary predisposition to various serious diseases, such as oncology, diabetes, hepatitis, mental illness, allergies, etc.)

Identify individual genetic pathologies

Understand the possible causes of infertility and problems that women experience during pregnancy nine0005

Determine a person’s tendency to alcoholism or drug addiction

Diagnose intolerance to certain medications, products

Diagnose why certain cosmetic procedures do not suit you

Cost

DNA – TEST PRICE, RUB
Light 7 gene genetic analysis 10. 800

A PERSONAL DNA TEST FROM @ONAKLINIKA WILL HELP YOU UNDERSTAND EXACTLY WHAT YOUR BODY NEED TO FEEL HEALTHY, ENERGETIC, ENERGY AND BEAUTIFUL AT ANY AGE. nine0082

DNA Test Preparation:

  • Adults refrain from eating for 2 hours, brushing teeth, smoking, kissing
  • Children and infants from 2 months. can be analyzed no earlier than 30 minutes. after feeding
  • The sampling material for the study is taken with a cotton swab from the inner surfaces of the cheeks.

DNA test results are ready! Within 30-35 days you will receive the results of the analysis in electronic form, in the Pdf format of the catalog to your e-mail. The catalog is a kind of report with recommendations that will help you properly adjust your diet and lifestyle without severe restrictions. nine0005

DNA – BABY TEST

DNA – BABY TEST PARENTS NEED TO KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT THEIR CHILD!

The test aims to identify problems in a child from an early age. It is done once in a lifetime, our DNA does not change with age and it can be done from 2 months. The baby test examines 10 genes. In fact, there are many more genes, but the most important ones that can cause pathologies are no more than 50. The rest are dormant and do not affect the body. The test will help you understand what your child needs for full development and good health. nine0106 ⠀
Unlike traditional advice, DNA test recommendations take into account:

  • Individual need for nutrients and vitamins;
  • Features of eating behavior and habits;
  • Having intolerance to gluten and lactose and other foods to which allergies may occur and further complications of underweight or childhood obesity;
  • Risk of diseases associated with malnutrition;
  • Innate ability for sports – this will help determine which sports sections are optimal
  • Physical activities acceptable for a child i. e. will be optimal, suitable for its bodily functions.

Genetic tests don’t just provide information about your genes. This is an investment in increased access to personal genetic information, it is confidence and health, regardless of the risks of which diseases are determined by your genes.

DNA – BEAUTY TEST

IN OUR CLINIC IT IS CARRIED OUT A DNA – TEST – BEAUTY IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND HOW TO PRESERVE NATURAL BEAUTY AND YOUTH OF SKIN AND HAIR. nine0005

Do you know what kind of care your skin and hair needs, or are you just guessing and experimenting? You need a Beauty test if you notice that the general recommendations and advice of cosmetologists, hairdressers and beauty bloggers, advertised brands do not suit you!

DNA skin care is unique in its kind, unlike the advice of friends and bloggers advertising various creams and procedures, it includes:

  • An individual assessment of the condition of your skin: moisture, elasticity, antioxidant protection; nine0089
  • The risks of complications after “aggressive procedures” are diagnosed;
  • Diagnosis and recommendations for a balanced diet, taking into account the necessary vitamins and supplements;
  • Calculates the risks of a possible skin reaction to sun exposure and consumption of sweets
  • Provides a 100% reliable forecast of age-related changes
  • Determine the best treatment methods
  • Helps with rehabilitation
  • Choose skin products that are right for you. nine0089
  • Allows you to identify the tendency to various types of alopecia, including androgenetic alopecia.
  • what components are missing in the body for hair growth, which allows you to choose the most accurate procedures for further treatment

As a result: You will receive an individual anti-age program, preventive skin and hair care that suits your genotype. Find out why acne, blackheads, dryness and hair loss appear. If you want to always look good, but you can’t get rid of bags under your eyes, dull hair color, tired look! nine0005

WELLNESS DNA TEST

WELLNESS DNA GENETIC TEST THAT STUDIES 32 GENES. WELLNESS GENETIC ANALYSIS WILL ALLOW YOU TO ACHIEVE YOUR BEST PHYSICAL FORM AND COLOR!

WELLNESS TEST RESULTS ALLOW:
  • Choose the optimal, balanced diet just for you;
  • Factors that inhibit the process of losing weight are diagnosed;
  • DNA test evaluates your congenital parameters. Namely, strength, speed, endurance; nine0089
  • Possible risks of the body’s susceptibility to sports injuries, various diseases are diagnosed;
  • It is determined what type of muscles you have and the rate of their growth. This indicator is especially important for athletes and fitness people;
  • The features of metabolism and energy consumption by the body are determined;
  • Identified foods that are not suitable for nutrition, causing more harm than good to the body. Conversely, foods are vital to you; nine0089
  • Individual need for nutrients and vitamins.

Unlike popular diets, DNA nutrition is compiled taking into account the real source of energy for the body and its reaction to various foods. If you decide to change your lifestyle and diet. If you are tired of dieting, you just need to make a healthy diet, change your eating habits, and choose the right physical activity. All this is easy with our DNA test.

In our clinic, all DNA diagnostics are carried out at the She Multidisciplinary Clinic at emb. Fontanka River 110. As well as Genetic analysis of Beauty is carried out in our Center for Aesthetic Medicine “She” at the address: Grafsky lane, 7.

Ways of HIV transmission – How to protect yourself? — HIV/AIDS: United Nations Children’s Fund

Ways of HIV transmission

HIV is transmitted by the transfer of body fluids containing the immunodeficiency virus from one person to another.

Immunodeficiency virus is present in the following body fluids: blood, semen and pre-ejaculatory secretions, vaginal secretions and breast milk. This virus is also found in saliva, but according to experts, its concentration is too low to cause disease. nine0005

Meeting at a jazz club in Lusaka, the capital of Zambia. Photo by UNICEF. It follows that kissing, even deep kissing with an open mouth, does not carry any risk. It is also impossible to get HIV through ordinary touch, such as shaking hands. Moreover, it is impossible to catch HIV from touching something that an HIV-infected person has already touched. HIV is also impossible to catch by air. Biological fluids containing the immunodeficiency virus enter the human body only through damage to the tissues / skin. nine0005

Sex

Unprotected penetrative sex is the most common way for bodily fluids to pass from one body to another, which can spread the virus. “Unprotected” means sex without a condom, “penetrative” means that during intercourse the penis penetrates or enters the vagina or anus. In this case, HIV-infected semen, vaginal fluid, or blood from one person can enter the body of another person through tiny cuts or wounds in the vagina, anus, or penis. These cuts or wounds may be so small that they cannot be seen. nine0005

Having another sexually transmitted disease increases the likelihood of contracting HIV because venereal diseases cause damage to the tissues of the genital organs, facilitating the entry of infected blood into the circulatory system. Sexually transmitted diseases can also cause serious health problems. Therefore, if you experience symptoms in the genitals such as pain, ulcers or wounds, itching or swelling, problems with urination, you should definitely contact a healthcare professional. All hospitals, medical centers, clinics and private doctors can cure venereal diseases. Do not be shy: regardless of where the treatment takes place, all information about this is confidential. nine0005

Drugs and needles

Drug addicts who use unsterile needles, syringes and flushing water put themselves at great risk of contracting HIV. Body fluids (most often blood) containing the HIV virus can enter the bloodstream directly through needles on a syringe, making the risk of infection very high.

Personally I don’t have children in the facility, but I did give birth to one of the teachers and know that I raised her properly to care, love and cherish those she is to watch over no matter who they are. She is a student and an incredible teacher/caregiver. She has a heart of gold and loves those babies. It completely warms my heart to hear the stories of how the babies literally want to be with her, to tell their parents/grandparents that she is theirs and can’t wait to see her. Yeah, I may be biased about her, but I know this daycare is where I would have had my grandchildren if we lived close by. Jordan is the absolute best at what she does and how she loves her God chosen profession.

My two boys have gone here for over a year now and they love it! Everyone there absolutely loves and cherishes all of the kiddos and treats them as their own. My boys have come a long way since starting there. They were potty trained way faster than expected. They have learned so many cool things that I didn’t even think to teach them. Also their speech has improved so much while being there. Being a single mom it was hard to trust anyone with my babies but I’m very happy and pleased with this daycare! I believe it feels more like a second home to my boys!!

My daughter has been going here for 3 years! She loves going to “school” and loves all her teachers. She has learned an incredible amount since being here. There is no other place I’d trust with my daughter. They have an app that sends pictures and videos throughout the day and then I get a daily report at the end of the. Very detailed with her activities, bathroom breaks, and curriculum and activities. I absolutely love this daycare and all the people here and everyone that works here.

I love GWMLA!!! I absolutely love the teamwork I experienced there. As an employee, I feel blessed to work in such an amazing facility! I love that the children learn so much content and it truly enhances their cognitive development! The teachers are so nurturing and work hard to provide the best for their class! I love the meaningful relationships the teachers have with their students! I just cannot stress it enough, this daycare is more than just that. It is a place where your children will grow so much academically speaking! 🙂 #TheBest

Read “A House with Character” – Diana Wynn Jones – Page 8

It turns out that our country is quite small, she thought.

However, she was interrupted by a loud buzzing sound from the bunch of flowers she was holding. Charmain held the handful up to her face to see what it was buzzing about. Here, on the slope, the sun was still shining brightly—and in that bright light Charmain could see one of her little blue gentians moving and quivering and buzzing. Charmain must have accidentally picked a flower with a bee inside. Charmain lowered the bouquet and shook it. Something purple and moving fell out onto the grass at her feet. It did not look like a bee and did not fly away, as a bee would fly away, but sat on the grass and buzzed. It buzzed and grew. Charmain took a startled step back along the edge of the cliff. The creature was now larger than Waif and continued to grow.

I don’t like this, Charmain thought. What it is?!

Before she had time to move and even think something else, the creature suddenly grew to two human heights. It was dark purple and looked human, but not human. He had translucent purple wings on his back that fluttered so fast you couldn’t see them, and his face. .. Charmain had to look away. It was the face of an insect, with all sorts of mandibles, graspers, antennae, antennae, and bulging eyes, each with at least sixteen small eyes.

– Oh, moms! Charmain whispered. – Yes, it’s a lubbock!

“Yes, I am a lubbock,” the creature announced. “I’m a lubbock, I own this place.

Charmain has heard of lubbocks. At school, they told all sorts of stories about them – and all of them were unpleasant. If you meet a lubbock, everyone said, the only thing left to do is to be very polite and hope that you can get away before you get stung and eaten.

“Excuse me, please,” Charmain said. “I didn’t know it was your meadow, otherwise, of course, I wouldn’t have come here.

“Everything is mine here, wherever you step,” growled the lubbock. All the lands you see are mine.

– What? All of Upper Norland? Charmain was surprised. – Nonsense!

“I never say stupid things,” the creature said. – All is mine. You are mine. – The wings moved even faster, and the creature moved towards her – instead of feet it had some kind of sinewy growths, terribly unnatural. – Very soon I will come and claim the rights to my property. First of all, I lay claim to you. Lubbock hummed towards Charmain. He held out his hands to her. And a long sting that protruded from the bottom of his face. Charmain squealed, jumped back, and fell over the edge of the cliff, scattering flowers.

Chapter Four,

which talks about Rollo, Peter and the mysterious change with Waif

Charmain heard the lubbock let out a raspy scream of annoyance, but she could barely make it out, the wind whistling so loudly in her ears. She saw a sheer rock wall flash by. Charmain screamed and screamed.

– Ylf! YLF! she said. – Oh, mothers! Ylf! I just made a flying spell! Why don’t they work?!

The spell, however, worked. Charmain realized this when the stones in front of her stopped rushing up and began to slide, then trudge, then sneak. For a moment she hung in the air – just above the giant sharp stones in the gorge under the cliff.

Maybe I’m already dead, she thought.

Then she said: “What nonsense!” – and, kicking furiously and waving her arms, she finally managed to roll over. And I saw Grandpa William’s house, still far below in the twilight and about a quarter of a mile away on the ground.

“Soaring is very nice,” said Charmain, “but how can I move?

Then she remembered that the lubbock has wings, which means that he is probably now flying off the cliff behind her. After that, she no longer began to wonder how to move. She herself did not notice how strongly she pushed off with her feet and glided to Grandpa William’s house. She managed to slip over the roof and garden, but there the spell was weakened. Charmain barely had time to shift to the side to be above the neat cobblestone path, and sat down with a thud, trembling from head to toe.

Saved, Charmain thought. For some reason, she had no doubts that nothing threatened her in Grandpa William’s domain. She felt it.

After a short rest, Charmain said:

– Phew! Well, a day! But I don’t ask for anything, except for a good book, and let them let me read it calmly! .. And all this Aunt Sempronia – there’s just not enough evil!

The bushes rustled behind her. Charmain shrank back and nearly squealed again as the hydrangeas parted and a little blue man jumped out onto the path.

– Are you running the show here? – asked this blue shorty in a sharp, squeaky voice.

Even in the twilight the little man was unmistakably blue, not dark purple, and without wings. His face was covered with wrinkles – the result of a quarrelsome character – besides, it was almost completely obscured by a powerful nose, but it was precisely a human face, and not the head of an insect. Charmain was no longer afraid.

– Who are you? she asked.

“Kobold, of course,” answered the little man. “Upper Norland is the land of the kobolds. I’m gardening here.

– At night? Charmain was surprised.

“We kobolds don’t walk during the day,” said the little blue man. – I’m asking – do you run here?

“Well, yes,” Charmain said. – Something like that.

“That’s what I thought,” the kobold nodded in satisfaction. “Saw the Talls drag the sorcerer off. Well, what do you want, I’ll cut off all these hydrangeas, huh?

– Why? Charmain was surprised again.

“Don’t feed me bread—let me cut something,” the kobold explained. – In gardening, a haircut is the most relish.

Charmain, who had never thought about gardening in her life, weighed his words.

“No,” she said. “Grandpa William wouldn’t breed them if he didn’t like them. He will be back soon and will probably be upset if he sees that they have been cut. Maybe you’ll do what you’re supposed to do every night and see what he says when he gets back?

“Of course he will say no,” the kobold replied sullenly. – He always spoils all the pleasure, this sorcerer. Well, what, at the usual rate or what?

– What is your regular rate? Charmain asked.

“A pot of gold and a dozen fresh eggs,” the kobold immediately replied.

Luckily, Grandpa William’s voice was heard out of thin air:

– I pay Rollo a pint of milk every night, darling, it’s magically delivered. You don’t have to do this.

The kobold spat on the path in disgust:

– What am I saying? Ruined all the fun! And in general, I will have time to do a lot if you sit here on the path all night!

Charmain haughtily said:

“I was just relaxing. And now I’m leaving. She got to her feet – her whole body was suspiciously heavy, besides, her knees gave way – and shuffled along the path to the front door. It must be locked, she thought. I’ll look beautiful if I can’t get into the house.

The door swung open just before she reached the porch, and out of the blue came light, and along with the light, Waif’s tiny bouncy figure, yapping and wagging its tail and writhing in delight at seeing Charmain again. Charmain was so glad to be home and waiting for her that she picked up Waif in her arms and carried her inside, and the dog twirled and twirled and tried to lick her chin.

In the house it turned out that the light follows her everywhere by magic.

“Excellent,” Charmain said aloud. “You don’t have to hunt for candles.

Her thoughts rushed about in panic: I didn’t close the window! Suddenly a lubbock crawled in here? Charmain released Waif onto the kitchen floor and darted through the door to the left. There was a bright light in the corridor, and she raced to the very end and slammed the window. Unfortunately, the light in the house made it seem completely dark in the meadow, and no matter how hard Charmain peered through the glass, it was not clear whether there was a lubbock or not. Charmain consoled herself with the thought that when she was in the meadow she couldn’t see the window, but she was still shivering from head to toe.

Darwin was lazy, and you could use it too / Sudo Null IT News People as diverse as Charles Dickens, Henri Poincaré and Ingmar Bergman worked in disparate fields at different times, all of whom had a passion for their work, huge ambitions and an almost superhuman ability to concentrate.

But if you study their daily life in detail, it turns out that they spent only a few hours a day on what is considered their most important work. The rest of the time they climbed mountains, slept, walked with friends, or just sat and thought. Their creativity and productivity were not the result of endless hours of hard work. Their accomplishments come from a modest amount of working hours.

How did they achieve everything? Can a generation raised to believe in the need for an 80-hour workweek to achieve success learn anything from the lives of people who laid the foundations of chaos theory, topology, or wrote “Great Expectations”?

I think maybe. If the greatest figures in history didn’t work long hours a day, then perhaps the key to their creativity will be to understand not only how they worked, but also how they rested, and how the two activities are connected.

Let’s start by examining the lives of two figures. Both of them have achieved great success in life. And how lucky they were neighbors and friends, living nearby, in the village of Down, southeast of London. And, in many ways, their lives give us a glimpse of how work, play, and creativity are connected.

Imagine, for starters, a silent, cloaked figure walking home along a path winding through the countryside. Sometimes in the morning he walks with his head down, immersed in his thoughts. Sometimes he walks slowly, stopping to listen to the sounds of the forest. This habit he “followed in the rainforests of Brazil”, during his service as a naturalist in the Royal Navy, collecting animals, studying the geography and geology of South America, laying the foundations for a career that would reach its pinnacle with the publication of On the Origin of Species in 1859.year. Now Charles Darwin has grown old, and has moved from collecting to theoretical work. His ability to move silently reflects his concentration and need for silence. According to his son Francis, Darwin could move so quietly that he once “approached a fox playing with her cubs within a few meters” and often greeted the foxes returning from a night hunt.

If these same foxes met Darwin’s neighbour, John Lubbock, 1st Baron Avebury, they would flee for their own skins. Lubbock liked to start the day with a walk through the countryside in the company of his hunting dogs. If Darwin was a bit like Mr. Bennet in Pride and Prejudice—a respectable middle-class gentleman, polite and honest, but who preferred the company of family and books—Lubbock was more like Mr. Bingley, extroverted, enthusiastic, rich enough to advance in society and life. Over the years, Darwin was tormented by various illnesses; Lubbock, even in his 60s, showed “the relaxed grace of an 18-year-old student,” as one of his guests said. But the neighbors shared a love of science, even though their work varied as much as their personalities.

After a morning walk and breakfast, by 8 o’clock Darwin was already in his office and worked for an hour and a half. At 9:30 he was reading the morning mail and writing letters. At 10:30 he returned to more serious work, sometimes moving to an aviary, greenhouse, or other structure in which he conducted his experiments. By noon, he would announce that “the work is done for today” and go for a walk along the sandy path he had laid shortly after buying the Down House. Part of it was on land leased to him by the Lubbock family. Returning an hour later with something, Darwin dined, and again answered letters. At 15 o’clock he went to sleep a little. An hour later he got up, walked along the path again, and returned to the office, after which at 17:30 he joined his wife, Emma and their family for dinner. In this chart, he wrote 19books, including technical literature on creepers, sea ducks and other topics; the controversial work “The Origin of Man and Sexual Selection”; The Origin of Species is probably the most famous book in the history of science and still influences how we think about nature and ourselves.

Whoever studied this chart could not immediately fail to notice the paradox. Darwin’s life revolved around science. From his student days, Darwin devoted himself to scientific gathering, research and theories. He and Emma had moved to the countryside from London so that they could have more space for their family and for their academic work. The Down House provided him with space for laboratories and greenhouses, and the countryside provided him with the peace and quiet he needed to work. But at the same time, his days do not seem very busy to us. The time that we would call “work” consisted of three 90 minute intervals. Had he been a modern university professor, he would have been denied a permanent academic position. If he had worked for a commercial organization, he would have been fired within a week.

It’s not that Darwin didn’t care about time or lacked ambition. Darwin was extremely strict with time, and, despite the means at his disposal, he believed that there was no time to waste. Traveling around the world aboard the Beagle, he wrote to his sister, Susan Elizabeth, that “the man who dares to spend an hour of his life has not understood its value.” When he considered whether he should get married, one of his concerns was “wasting time – no time to read in the evenings,” and in his journals he noted the time lost to chronic diseases. His love of science was “reinforced by a desire to earn the respect of my fellow naturalists,” he admitted in his autobiography. He was passionate and enthusiastic, so much so that he sometimes experienced panic attacks in connection with his ideas and their consequences.

John Lubbock is much less famous than Darwin, but by the time of his death in 1912 he was “one of the most successful English amateur scientists, one of the most prolific and successful authors of his time, one of the most committed social reformers, and one of the most successful jurists in the recent history of Parliament”. Lubbock’s scientific interests extended to paleontology, animal psychology, and entomology—he invented the ant farm—but his most permanent work was archeology. His work popularized the terms Paleolithic and Neolithic, which are still used by archaeologists today. His purchase of Avebury, an ancient settlement southwest of London, kept the local stone monuments from being destroyed by builders. Today it is comparable in popularity and archaeological importance to Stonehenge, and the preservation of the site earned him the title of Baron Avebury in 1900th year.

Lubbock’s achievements are not limited to science. From his father, he inherited a prosperous bank, and turned it into a real force in the financial world of the late Victorian period. He helped modernize the British banking system. He spent decades in Parliament, where he was a successful and respected legislator. His bibliography includes 29 books, many of which have become bestsellers and have been translated into many languages. The exorbitant volume of his labors did not lose comparison even with his most successful contemporaries. “How you find time” for science, writing, politics, and business “is a mystery to me,” Darwin told him in 1881.

It’s tempting to think of Lubbock as the equivalent of today’s highly motivated alpha male, something like Tony Stark in a steampunk setting. But here’s the catch: his political fame was based on promoting recreation. The British bank holidays – four public holidays – were invented by him, and they, coming into force in 1871, cemented his reputation. They were so loved and associated with him so strongly that they were nicknamed “St. Lubbock”. For decades, he fought for the adoption of the “short working day law”, which limited the working hours of people under 18 to 74 (!) Hours a week; and when it was finally accepted on April 1903 years, 30 years after the start of the struggle, it was called “Avebury Law”.

Lubbock himself behaved according to his convictions. It may have been difficult to keep such a schedule in Parliament, when debates and votes could be delayed well after midnight, but on his estate of High Elms he rose at 6:30, and, after prayers, riding and breakfast, began work at 8: thirty. He divided the day into half-hour blocks, a habit he picked up from his father. After much practice, he could turn his attention from the “twisted financial question” of his partners or clients to “such a biological problem as parthenogenesis” without batting an eyelid. Around noon he spent a couple of hours outdoors. He was an enthusiastic cricketer and regularly invited professional players to his estate as coaches. His younger brothers played football; two of them took part in the final of the very first FA Cup in 1872. He was also very fond of playing fives, a handball-like game he excelled at at Eton. Later, having become interested in golf, Lubbock replaced the cricket ground on his estate with a golf course from 9holes.

It turns out that, despite differences in character and achievement, both Darwin and Lubbock were able to do what today is considered increasingly unusual. Their lives were full, their works were amazing, and yet their days were filled with inactivity.

Seems like a contradiction, or a balance that most of us cannot achieve. But it’s not. As we shall see, Darwin, Lubbock, and other creative and prolific personalities did not achieve success in spite of free time; they were successful because of him. And even in today’s world of 24/7 presence, we can learn how to balance work and play in a way that makes us smarter, more creative, and happier.

According to a famous study, the best violin students were not those who practiced the most, but those who knew when to stop.

Darwin is not the only famous scientist who combined his life’s dedication to science with short daily work. Similar cases can be traced in many other careers, and for several reasons it is better to start with scientists. Science is a highly competitive and all-consuming occupation. The achievements of scientists – the number of articles and books, awards, the number of citations of works – are strictly documented, and they are easy to measure and compare. As a result, their legacy is easier to define than that of business leaders or celebrities. At the same time, scientific disciplines differ from each other, which gives us a useful variety in work habits and personality traits. In addition, most scientists were not subject to the emergence of myths that usually surround business leaders and politicians.

Finally, some scientists themselves have been interested in how work and leisure affect thinking and inspiration. One example of such scientists is Henri Poincaré, a French mathematician whose social position and achievements place him on a par with Darwin. His 30 books and 500 papers cover areas such as number theory, topology, astronomy and celestial mechanics, theoretical and practical physics, and philosophy. The American mathematician Eric Temple Bell described him as “the last universalist”. He participated in the standardization of time zones, in the construction of railways in the north of France (he was a mining engineer by training), served as the chief inspector in the technological building and was a professor at the Sorbonne.

Poincare was not just famous among his colleagues. In 1895, along with the writer Emile Zola, the sculptors Auguste Rodin and Jules Dalou, and the composer Camille Saint-Saens, French psychologist Edouard Toulouse studied him as part of his work on the psychology of genius. Toulouse noted that Poincare worked on a very even schedule. He spent the most difficult reflections from 10:00 to 12:00, and then from 17:00 to 19:00. The greatest mathematical genius of the 19th century spent no more time working than was necessary to understand the problem – about 4 hours a day.

We observe the same scheme in other mathematicians. Godfrey Harold Hardy, one of Britain’s leading mathematicians in the first half of the 20th century, began the day with a leisurely breakfast and reading the results of cricket matches, then plunged into mathematics from 9 to 13. After dinner he went for a walk and played tennis. “Four hours of creative work a day is the maximum for a mathematician,” he told his friend and colleague, Oxford professor K. P. Snow. A longtime colleague of Hardy’s, John Edensor Littlewood, believed that the concentration required for serious work meant that a mathematician could work “four, maximum five hours a day, with breaks every hour (for example, for a walk)”. Littlewood was known for always taking Sunday offs, stating that this ensured he had new ideas when he returned to work on Monday.

Observation of the scheme of work of scientists, carried out in the early 1950s, showed approximately the same results. Illinois Institute of Technology professors Raymond Van Zelst and Willard Ker observed their colleagues, recording their work habits and schedules, and then plotted the number of hours spent in the office against the number of published articles. You might think that such a graph looks like a straight line, showing that the more hours a scientist works, the more papers they publish. But it’s not. The data looked like an M-shaped curve. It grew rapidly at first, and experienced a maximum between 10 and 20 hours per week. Then she went down. Scientists who worked 25 hours a week were no more productive than those who worked 5. Scientists who worked 35 hours a week were half as productive as those who worked 20 hours.

Then the curve started to grow again, but not so fast. Workaholic researchers who spent 50 hours a week in the lab were able to pull themselves out of the 35-hour valley. They were just as productive as those who spent five hours a week in the lab. Van Zelst and Kerr considered that this 50-hour hill was concentrated in “physics research requiring the constant use of bulky equipment,” and that most of these 10-hour workdays people were busy servicing machines, sometimes taking measurements.

After that, the graph went down. Scientists who worked 60 hours a week or more were the least productive.

Van Zelst and Kerr also asked colleagues “how many hours on a typical work day are devoted to homework that contributes to the effective performance of your job” and plotted the responses. This time they saw not M, but one maximum in the region of 3 – 3.5 hours a day. Unfortunately, they didn’t say anything about the total number of hours they worked at the office and at home. They only mentioned the possibility that the most productive researchers “do most of their creative work at home or elsewhere” rather than on campus. Assuming that the most productive scientists work equally at home and in the office, it turns out that they work from 25 to 38 hours a week. For a six-hour work week, this translates into an average of 4-6 hours a day.

Similar statistics of working 4-5 hours a day can be found in the lives of writers. German writer and Nobel laureate Thomas Mann worked out his daily schedule by 1910, when he was 35 years old, and published the famous novel Buddenbrooks. Mann began his day at 9, settled in an office with a strict no-distraction rule for his family, and worked on novels first. After dinner, “the daytime was for reading, handling mountains of correspondence, and walking,” he said. After an hour’s sleep in the afternoon and subsequent tea, he spent an hour or two working on small pieces and editing.

Anthony Trollope, the great English writer of the 19th century, also kept to a strict schedule. This is how he described his work schedule at Waltham House, where he lived from 1859 to 1871. At 5 o’clock in the morning a servant came to him with coffee. First he read everything he had done the previous day, then at 5:30 he wound up the clock on the table and began to write. He wrote 1,000 words an hour, averaging 40 pages a week, until 8 o’clock when it was time to go to his regular job. Working in this way, he published 47 novels before his death in 1882 at the age of 67, although he did not make it clear that he regarded his achievements as anything out of the ordinary. After all, his mother, who began writing to financially support the family at the age of over 50, published more than 100 books. He wrote: “I think all those who lived as writers – working on literary work daily – will agree with me that in three hours a day you can write everything that a person is capable of writing.”

Trollope’s clear schedule is comparable to that of his contemporary, Charles Dickens. After staying up late into the night as a young man, Dickens settled on a schedule “as methodical or precise” as that of a “town clerk”, according to his son Charlie. Dickens closed in his office from 9 to 14, with a break for lunch. Most of his stories were serialized in magazines, and Dickens was rarely more than a chapter or two ahead of the publication schedule and the illustrator. And yet, after working for five hours, Dickens ended there.

This discipline may seem to you the result of Victorian austerity, but many of the most prolific writers of the 20th century worked the same way. The Egyptian writer Naguib Mahfouz worked as a government official, and usually wrote fiction from 4 to 7 pm. Canadian writer Alice Munro, winner of the 2013 Nobel Prize in Literature, wrote from 8 am to 11 am. Australian novelist Peter Carey said of working every day: “I think three hours is enough.” Such a schedule allowed him to write 13 novels, including two that won the Booker Prize. William Somerset Maugham worked “only four hours a day” until 1 pm – but “never less”, he added. Gabriel Garcia Marquez wrote every day for five hours. Ernest Hemingway started work at 6 am and finished no later than noon. In the absence of serious deadlines, Saul Bellow went to the office after breakfast, wrote until lunch, and then reviewed what he had done in the morning. Irish writer Edna O’Brien worked in the morning, “stopped at 1:00 or 2:00 pm, and spent the rest of the day in the care of the world.” Stephen King describes a day in which he writes and reads for 5-6 hours as “tense”.

Carl Anders Erikson, Ralf Kramp and Clemens Tesch-Röhmer observed similar results when studying violin students at the Berlin Conservatory in the 1980s. Scientists were interested in what distinguishes outstanding students from the crowd of just good ones. After talking to students and their teachers, and looking at student work diaries, they found that there was something that stood out to the best students.

First, they didn’t just practice more, but they did it consciously. In the words of Erickson, during mindful training, you are “engaging with full concentration in activities that improve your technique.” You are not just repeating scales or practicing movements. Mindful activities involve structure, concentration, clear goals, and feedback. They require paying attention to what you are doing and seeing how you can improve your performance. Students can engage in this way when they have a clear plan for greatness, defined by an understanding of what separates great work from good work, or winners from losers. Such activities, in which it is necessary to complete the task in the shortest time, with the highest score, or in the most elegant way to solve the problem, constitute conscious practice.

Secondly, you must have a goal for which you are willing to practice daily. Deliberate practice is not a very interesting activity, and the return does not come immediately. It involves getting to the pool before dawn, working on your swing or gait when you can hang out with friends, practicing finger work or breathing in a windowless room, spending hours perfecting details that almost no one will notice. There is no instant gratification in conscious practice, so you need to feel that this long-term work is paying off and that you are not just improving your career opportunities, but are building a professional personality. You don’t just do it for a fat wad of money. You do it because it enhances your sense of yourself and the sense of who you want to be.

The idea of deliberate practice and Erickson’s measurements and others of the amount of time that world-class performers spend practicing has attracted a lot of attention. This research is at the heart of Malcolm Gladwell’s argument in Geniuses and Outsiders that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to achieve perfection, and that all great men from Bobby Fischer to Bill Gates to the Beatles have worked their 10,000 hours before until the world heard about them. For coaches, music teachers, and parents, this number promises a paved road to the NFL, Juilliard, or MIT: start young, keep them busy, don’t let them give up. In a culture that views stress and overwork as virtues, 10,000 is an impressive number.

But Erickson and others noted something else in their study, something that almost everyone did not pay attention to. “Deliberate practice requires effort that can be sustained for a limited number of hours a day.” If you practice too little, you will never reach world class. If you practice too much, you risk injury, burnout, or exhaustion. To be successful, students need to “avoid exhaustion” and “limit practice to a period of time after which they can fully recover daily and weekly.”

How do the greatest students make use of their limited hours of practice? The rhythm of their classes is subject to a clear pattern. They work more hours a week, but not at the cost of longer daily sessions. They do more frequent and shorter sets, 80-90 minutes, with half-hour breaks.

If we add up this schedule, we get 4 hours a day. About the same amount of time Darwin spent on his hard work, Hardy and Littlewood on mathematics, Dickens and King on writing books. Even the most ambitious students in the best schools in the world, preparing to compete in a competitive field, are able to concentrate and give their best no more than 4 hours a day.

The upper limit, according to Erickson, is determined not “by available time, but by available mental and physical resources.” Students did not just study for 4 hours and finish. Lectures, auditions, homework and everything else occupied them for the whole day. In an interview, they said that “the limit to the time of daily work was their ability to maintain concentration.” Therefore, it takes ten years for 10,000 Gladwell hours. If you can only focus for 4 hours a day, you get 20 hours a week (excluding weekends), and 1,000 hours a year (with two weeks off).

The importance of deliberate practice is not only illustrated by the lives of musicians. Ray Bradbury took up writing seriously in 1932 and wrote 1,000 words a day. “For ten years I wrote at least one story a week,” he recalls, but they did not want to team up with each other. And finally, in 1942, he wrote The Lake. Years later, he still remembers that moment.

“Ten years of wrong work suddenly turned into the right idea, the right scene, the right characters, the right day, the right time to be creative. I wrote the story sitting outside on the lawn with my typewriter. By the end of the hour the story was over, my hair was on the back of my neck and I was in tears. I realized that I had written the first really good story in my entire life.”

Erickson and colleagues also observed something else that separates great students from just good students, besides more hours of study. This point has since been almost completely ignored. This is how they rested.

Top performers slept an hour more on average than average performers. They didn’t get up later, they slept during the day. Of course, it was different for different people, but the best students usually studied the hardest and longest in the morning, slept in the afternoon, and then studied again in the afternoon.

The researchers also asked students to note the amount of time spent on practice, classes, and so on, and keep a diary for a week. By comparing the results of the interviews with the diaries, they discovered an interesting anomaly.

It’s just that good violinists underestimate the number of hours they spend in a state of relaxation. They believed that they were resting 15 hours a week, when in fact they were resting almost twice as much. The best violinists, on the other hand, could quite accurately estimate the time they spent on rest, about 25 hours. Top performers spent more time organizing their time, thinking about how they would spend their time and evaluating what they had already done.

In other words, the best students practiced the habits of deliberate practice – concentration, the ability to evaluate their own performance, a sense of the value of their time and the need to spend it wisely. They discovered the great importance of mindful rest. They learned early on its importance, that the best creative work goes best when our breaks allow the subconscious mind to shut down, and that we can learn to rest better. At the conservatory, conscious rest is a partner of conscious practice. And also in the studio, in the laboratory and in the publishing house. As Dickens, Poincaré and Darwin discovered, everything matters. Both of these activities are halves of a whole creative life.

And, despite all the attention devoted to the study of students of the Berlin Conservatory, its part related to sleep, attention to rest, the application of conscious growth as a necessary part of conscious practice, is not mentioned anywhere. Malcolm Gladwell’s “Geniuses and Outsiders” focuses on the number of hours spent in practice, and says nothing about the fact that successful students also slept an hour more, that they slept during the day and took breaks.

This is not to say that Gladwell misread the study.

Four Mile Bridge, Fing Elk River on County Road 42, Steamboat Springs, Routt County, CO Meaning: The oldest cable-stayed bridge over the Elk River, the bridge is also the oldest bridge in Rutt County and shares the distinction of being the oldest bridge in Northeast Colorado with the Cay’s Ranch Bridge over the White River in Rio Blanco County. This is one of the last bridges built by the WIRN Bridge Company after its merger in 1900 at American Bridge Company. Although this span is a common type of bridge (connected by a stud across a truss), it is notable for its intact stone piers and steel superstructure. In pristine condition and furnishings, this is an important example of early farm building.

Failed Instagrammers refuse to risk themselves

A minute of the centers of the Universe.

The recent tragedy in Uvalde, Texas, where a young elf, Salvador Ramos, killed 19 children and 2 adults at school (one of them, as far as I understood, turned out to be his own grandmother, with whom the elf began before going to school) exposed one nuance, very unpleasant for believers in “everyone smiles, asks how things are” in normal countries.

Here’s the thing:

Two months before an 18-year-old local man shot 19 children and 2 adults, local police officers were given training to respond to an active shooter at a school.

According to the instructions, the officers had to prevent the killings at any cost, including their own lives. The instruction also regulates the continuation of the operation to neutralize the shooter, even in the event of injury or death of a partner, if the officers act as a standard tactical unit – a pair.

According to The Wall Street Journal, 19 armed police officers were outside the classroom where the criminal barricaded himself and shot people, almost 80 minutes before the start of the assault.

A survey of employees showed that they were afraid to act because of the threat to their lives.

Once again, for those who did not understand: 19 elven cops, hung with weapons, were simply afraid to storm the classroom, where 1 (one) scumbag barricaded himself.

They hung around the corridor while the children being shot called and asked to be rescued.

“19 officers were in the hallway. At that time, a girl in the classroom was able to pick up the phone and call 911. She called several times. She reported many dead,” said Stephen McGraw, director of the Texas Department of Public Safety.

There were several children who called from this hell. Almost none of them received help. 19 dead. The special forces were waiting for a set of spare keys, they opened the door to the classroom, and then destroyed the attacker.

Special forces (!) were waiting for a set of spare keys.

And now compare this with the behavior of 1 (one) ordinary traffic police officer of the beloved Mordor, who was not afraid to risk himself last year for the sake of detaining his mother’s shooter in Perm.

Need to explain the difference? A person with a Russian cultural code – a military man, a policeman, a rescuer from the Ministry of Emergencies, etc. – without hesitation, he will rush to save another person (like Zinichev). It will rush automatically, it is sewn into our very cultural code.

An elf with a Western cultural code will wonder if he should risk his ass to save someone else’s. From here, by the way, many situations arise during the SVO of the sample “a patient with a good face came to shoot at the Russians, but as soon as he realized that the Russians were shooting accurately in response, he immediately shrugged it off.”

Here, for example:

One of the English-speaking mercenaries who fired at the Russian APC turned out to be British.

Ben Grant, 30-year-old former Royal Marine, son of Tory MP Helen Grant. He came to Ukraine in March.

Grant, an Afghan veteran, said the fighting was worse than any he had experienced before. His unit, made up of British and American mercenaries and two Ukrainian interpreters, was preparing to attack a Russian-held facility near Kharkov when they were ambushed.

“We must run or we will die” – went to Ukraine to hunt Russians, and now he is very glad that he survived.

Killing others is not a problem for elves. The problem is when others are not unarmed, not tied up, not sleeping, etc., but are equipped no worse than those who came to kill, and do it more, or even at least as efficiently.

I think I have already quoted comrade Marakhovsky, who cited data from an advanced study on the subject of elven OBVM, but here it is appropriate to do it again.

…In 1963, only 12% of adolescents agreed that they were Very Important Persons. Already in ‎1992‏ ‎their ‎year ‎their ‎became ‎at least ‎77%. prescribe something psychomodulating.

This ‎landslide ‎change ‎life, ‎replacement ‎old, ‎quite ‎modest ‎humanity ‎”narcisosphere”, ‎- ‎occurred ‎without ‎declarations‎and ‎because ‎invisible. But this does not mean that it is not dizzying, not catastrophic, not epochal.

Even the language itself has changed, in which we speak: these days, in a wonderful publication, I came across amazing examples.

1) From 1960 to 2008, the frequency of use of pronouns “we, us, us” – fell by 10%.

2) The frequency of using ‎I, ‎me, ‎me‎‎-‎ increased by ‎42%.

3) The frequency of using the words “honesty, compassion, patience” fell by 74%.

4) In 2019, a LEGO poll showed for the first time a YouTuber’s victory over an astronaut in the battle for the main children’s question (86% of millennials and zoomers would like to earn money by posting ads).

It is impossible not to note that the world is woven by 99.99999% of failed cosmonauts and the world is 99% composed of failed ‎instagrammers,‎- ‎these are two different worlds.

You and I live in the first of these worlds, where failed cosmonauts right now are saving the population of the former Ukrainian SSR from the Bandera ghouls.

Stronghold of Freedom and other normal countries in which Very Important Persons grew up (those who in 1992 were part of 77% of the teenagers mentioned in the quote, now work, including cops) refuse to risk themselves – they live in a world of failed instagrammers.

For whom the words “honesty, compassion, patience” are empty words. As well as “mutual assistance”, “public interests”, etc.

In which of the mentioned worlds it is better to live and which of the worlds has a future – everyone can draw their own conclusions.

How to send a child to school USA

It is natural for parents to want to give their child the best. When it comes to education, for many, the best thing is studying abroad, in the homeland of the American Dream: the USA. Sending a child to study in America is a very real possibility today.

      Read in the article:

      • Studying in the USA: what you need for this
      • How much does schooling cost
      • American School Admission Steps
      • How to get into high school in the USA

Studying in the USA: what is needed for this?

First of all, decide on a plan. Do you want to send the child for a while, say, to tighten the tongue at a summer camp
Or do you dream of him getting a high school diploma and going to college? In any case, it will be useful to seek advice from a specialist in studying abroad.

If you have long-term plans, you should familiarize yourself with the US secondary education system. It includes an elementary school (Elementary or Primary), in which children study from 6 to 12 years old, middle school (from 12 to 16 years old) and high school (from 16 to 18 years old).

According to the type of funding, schools are divided into public, private and mixed types, the so-called charter schools. (In public American schools, children from Russia can study for only one year – this must also be taken into account.) Depending on how much time the child spends in school, it can be a day or a boarding school.

A wide selection of private schools allows you to find an institution that will fully satisfy your needs.

You can choose medium options that are balanced in terms of price / quality ratio, or prefer elite schools, the diploma of which will ensure admission to a ranking university in any country.

The preferred option for those who want to give their child a quality education in America and at the same time be calm that he will be well looked after in is a boarding school. These schools usually have the highest level of security, discipline and education. Preparation in a good boarding school gives every chance of entering a prestigious American university.

How much does it cost to study in a US school?

The high quality of education in private schools makes them expensive. On average, a year of study at an American private boarding school costs between 18,000 and 46,000 dollars. The most expensive private school is The Pinnacle School in Connecticut, which costs $96,200 a year. In ordinary private schools, the cost is lower because it does not include accommodation, and most often does not exceed $22,000 per year. Stages of admission to an American school

      Making a decision

The optimal time to start studying abroad and, in particular, in the United States is considered to be the age of 10-14 years. It is easier for children to adapt to a change of scenery, a new culture, they are more likely to be able to master the language at the native level.

      Preparation

At this stage, three important points can be distinguished: language, readiness for independent work and psychological readiness. Separation from the family, a new educational system, a new environment will in any case be stressful, and the child must be ready to cope with it.

In order for a child to easily perceive information, communicate calmly with teachers and peers, his level of English upon admission must be at least B2-C1.

In American schools, a significant part of the program involves personal work and personal responsibility for the result. In order for the child to quickly get involved in the educational process, he needs the skills of independent work.

      School choice

At the stage of choosing a school, it is important to take into account the abilities of the child. There are many private schools in the USA, including boarding schools with a certain bias – sports, scientific or creative. It also makes sense to pay attention to schools that are focused on accepting foreign students and are making efforts to facilitate their adaptation period. These include, for example, CATS Academy Boston.

      Application

Before applying to the school, you should familiarize yourself with its requirements. If this is your first admission abroad, we recommend entrusting the process to professionals: they will help you collect the necessary documents and meet deadlines. As a rule, it is necessary to provide a scan of the passport, an academic transcript (a statement of grades for the last two or three years), sometimes you also need a motivation letter and a portfolio. Study Abroad Advisors can also help with their preparation.

      Get expert advice

      Entrance examinations

For high school students, a prerequisite is an exam in English and, possibly, in one of the core subjects. In the lower grades, additional testing is not required. Many private schools require an interview. Usually, all this can be done without leaving Russia, and the interview can be done via Skype.

      Preparing for departure

After the exams, the process of obtaining a student visa begins. In addition, if you choose a mainstream school rather than a boarding school, it will take time to find a host family for your child.

“In the US, grades are personal information, so they are never publicly announced in front of the class” — Realnoe Vremya

      07:00, 05/14/2016

      Plot: Kazanian in Silicon Valley

Preschool and school education in Silicon Valley. Part 1

Realnoe Vremya’s columnist Alexander Galkin, who moved to Silicon (Silicon) Valley a few years ago, talks about the educational system in the United States in his new column. Kindergartens in America are not the same as in Russia, schools do not give “fives”, and educational institutions themselves undergo a special rating, which even takes into account the racial composition of students.

For many who come to the US at a fairly mature age, one of the first issues after obtaining health insurance is the process of placing children in school and providing them with a decent education.

Despite the fact that schools in the US are public institutions designed to provide all children with a basic education, regardless of their background, social status and income, in reality this process is not so transparent.

The facts described here are based in large part on my oldest son’s school experience in Silicon Valley and may not be true in other states and schools outside of the valley.

There are two main preschool institutions: kindergartens (preschools, not to be confused with kindergarden) and day care institutions for children. Photo nyadp.org

      Kindergartens

We must start with the fact that in the United States there is no system of public kindergartens as a class. All preschool children (in the US, children under 5 or 6 years old) are excluded from the public education system, and parents are forced to pay all their expenses out of their own pockets. However, if everyone in the family works and there is no one to look after the child, then this is considered “cost of working activities”, and they can reduce the taxable base of their income.

There are two main types of preschool: kindergartens (preschools, not to be confused with kindergarden, see below!) and daycare.

Day care facilities for children are designed mainly for the fact that there children remain without parents for some time. They are, as a rule, large playrooms, where under the supervision of a teacher there are children of different ages, who have various toys at their disposal. Here are not only children under 5 years old, but often also children from the lower and sometimes middle classes, in the event that their school does not offer an after-school program.

Kindergartens, in contrast to daycare, have a specific program, that is, they work with children purposefully to develop certain skills. They usually represent either a specific development program (Montessori system, Waldorf system), or offer an “immersion” (immersion) in the language (German, French, Russian and Chinese gardens), or combine these approaches in various ways. Here, as a rule, children are required to speak and be potty trained – in such kindergartens, the whole process is based on teamwork, and educators simply do not have time to change diapers for children or deal with them individually.

Quite often, both types of pre-schools are organized in a private home and are designed for a relatively small number of children (maximum 15). Large gardens with several groups are rarer and usually more expensive.

On average, a full week of full-time kindergarten (from 8:30 am to about 5:00 pm) costs about $1,500 (supervision and child care only), plus meals and curriculum (which often cannot be missed). “Home” kindergartens are cheaper by $200-300 per month. It is often possible to go only half a day (from 8.30 to 13.30), or only on certain days (two or three days a week by choice) for about 70% of the total cost.

      School

In the USA, three types of schools are distinguished by type of funding: public (100% funded from the budget), charter or independent schools (charter schools, also funded by the state, but to a lesser extent than public ones, and offering alternative types of education; these schools have fewer requirements and restrictions than public schools) and private schools (private schools funded by the money of parents and patrons).

The cost of private schools starts from about $18 thousand per year and can reach 45-60 thousand, and often requires payment immediately for six months or even a year of study. At the same time, each private school has a special fund to help those students whose parents do not have sufficient income to pay the full cost, and can reduce the payment or even offer completely free education – in this case, funding is provided by the money of patrons.

Private schools are often language schools (bi- and trilingual, often with immersion schools), science schools, correctional schools (for teenagers with delinquent behavior).

Each school has its own district (school district) and is open to children living in this area. Photo studymir.com

      Public Schools

Each school has its own district (school district) and is open to children living in this territory. This means that in the US there is no way to choose a public school: everyone must go to the school to which they are assigned. The rating and quality of the school is one of the decisive factors when buying a house or apartment, and therefore, in areas with good schools, the cost of housing will be 15-20% higher than in areas with poor educational institutions.

There is a single ranking of schools, which is open and available at greatschools.org. There you can see which school a particular address is assigned to, the rating of this school (from 1 to 10 points), the national and racial composition of the school’s students (the number of whites, African Americans and Asians), as well as the results of the school’s annual testing in mathematics and English .

In order to prove that you are assigned to this area, you need to provide electricity and water bills to the school every two to three months – thus confirming the fact of residence and registration in the school area.

      Kindergarden

When a child is 5 years old, he/she may already start school in “zero” grade. This class is called kindergarden, but this is not a kindergarten, but a school, its initial stage. The main difference from the school is both free and mandatory this stage.

The school process is divided into stages: elementary school, middle school and high school. Photo amelife.ru

      Basic school

The school process is divided into stages: elementary school, middle school and high school. One school may offer all classes from elementary to high school at once, or only part of them (for example, only high school). As such, school districts are separately defined for elementary, middle, and high schools.

The duration of primary and secondary school varies – somewhere primary school lasts only 4 years, somewhere – 5 years. The school always ends with the 12th grade, after which higher education begins in the form of a college.

      Grading system

In the US, a single standard is a digital grading system from 0.00 to 4.00 (in some cases up to 4.33), while 4.00 is the best grade, an analogue of our “five”. If the student answered in such a way that even fives are not enough, then 4.33 is sometimes used as our analogue of “five plus”. At the end of the elementary, middle and high school program, students write a series of tests, according to the results of which their average mark is calculated, the so-called GPA (grade point average). This number is used later in the graduation competition when applying for admission to colleges and universities.

In the schools themselves, however, often for the sake of convenience they use not a digital, but an alphabetic scale, while A corresponds to a five, and F to a two (it is often referred to as Fail, that is, “failure”, “failure”). At the same time, the last passing grade is D.

In the schools themselves, however, often for the sake of convenience they use not a digital, but an alphabetic scale, while A corresponds to five, and F to two. Photo sharpschool.com

There are two methods of scoring: the point method, when each completed task has a certain number and the ratio of the sum of points for completed tasks (homework, class work, tests) to the total number of points is given. An alternative is the ranking method, where 10% of the students with the highest scores get an A, then 15% a B, and so on. In this case, it turns out that the grade does not depend on the total number of possible points, but on the number of points scored by the best student.

In elementary school, they often don’t give grades at all, but stick small stickers in the form of insects, fairy tale characters, and so on, on test papers. In our school, for example, the grades used are Above Expectations, Meets Expectations, Partly Meets Expectations, or Does Not Meet Expectations.

In the US, grades are considered private information and are therefore never given publicly in front of the class. Typically, students receive their checked homework and tests in their personal folders, which are located in a specific location in the classroom. Pupils then take their folders and individually look at their grades, while you don’t know what your neighbor got for the same job and how he studies in general.

Hirsch, Jr., author of Cultural Literacy and The Schools We Need, and is based on a large body of research in cognitive psychology, as well as a careful examination of several of the world’s fairest and most effective school systems. Professor Hirsch has argued that, for the sake of academic excellence, greater fairness, and higher literacy, early schooling should provide a solid, specific, shared core curriculum in order to help children establish strong foundations of knowledge.
