John Irving

John Irving (John Winslow Irving / John Winslow Irving) – American writer, screenwriter, actor was born in Exter, New Hampshire during World War II (March 2, 1942). At this time, his father served in the army and was in the Pacific Ocean. When John was only two years old, his parents divorced, and in 1948 his mother remarried, taking the surname Irving, which John received, who turned from John Wallace Blunt Jr. into John Winslow Irving. The writer grew up like this never even having met his biological father.

Irving grew up as a reserved child, but he himself considers his innate love for loneliness to be an important character trait that made him a writer. As a child, John suffered from dyslexia, and even simple reading was given to him with great difficulty. Despite this, he became a drunken reader and entered the Faculty of Literary Studies. As a student of Philips Exeter Academy, where his adoptive father taught Russian history, Irving became interested in wrestling. He is sure that it was thanks to this sport that he learned discipline and perseverance.

After one year of study, Irving left the University of Pittsburgh and moved to Vienna, the capital of Austria. He studied at the University of Vienna and traveled all over Europe on a motorcycle. The impressions received were later reflected in his works. After returning to the United States, Irving enrolled at the University of New Hampshire, graduating in 1965. He married when he was still a student, and became a father at 23. Having finally established his decision to become a writer, Irving received a grant to study writing courses at the University of Iowa, where Kurt Vonnegut was among his teachers.

Irving received his Ph.D. in 1967. In the same year he returned to New England with his grown family and received a position as an assistant in the English department at Windham College in Vermont. His first book, Free the Bears (another translation, Unleash the Bears), was published when he was only 26 years old. Inspired by the real events of the last days of the Second World War, in his novel he told the tragicomic story of two students trying to free animals from the Vienna Zoo. Already in the first work, you can find several intertwined storylines that give special drama to the misfortunes that fall on the heads of the heroes of his books. Subsequently, this technique will become Irving’s hallmark. Despite the warm reviews of critics and even the favorable opinion of Kurt Vonnegut, the book did not gain much popularity among readers. However, along with director Irving Keshner, Irving attempted to write a script for a film adaptation of this novel. Although the attempt was frankly unsuccessful, it was not the author’s last experience with Hollywood. At the same time, Irving received an academic grant from the Rockefeller Foundation.

In his second book, The Man of Water (1972), the author sneered at the mores of the US academic community and once again returned to Vienna. That same year, Irving became a writer-in-residence at the University of Iowa. His next book, Family Life at 158 Pounds, was published two years later and focused on the difficult intimate life of two married couples on a US university campus. It is no coincidence that its title refers to the slang of wrestlers; the writer, even in his mature years, remains faithful to this sport. At 19In 1975, Irving became an assistant in the English department at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts. That same year, Irving received a grant from the Guggenheim Foundation.

Frustrated by the way Random House promoted his work, Irving gave his fourth novel, The World Through Garp’s Eyes (1978), to Dutton, whose management promised the writer full support for his new book. The protagonist of the book, the protagonist of the author, a writer who tells stories about his life, which involve bright, eccentric characters. Immediately after its release, the novel received rave reviews and became an international bestseller. At 1979 The World Through Garp’s Eyes was shortlisted for the American Book Award and the following year won the National Book Foundation’s award, which at the same time began to be given separately for paperback and hardcover books. . Later, the work was filmed by director George Roy Hill, and Robin Williams starred in the title role. The film was nominated for several Academy Awards. There was a place in the film adaptation for the author himself, who starred as a manager in one of Garp’s wrestling matches.

“The World According to Garp” made a well-known academic writer a super-popular author, and all subsequent books by Irving became bestsellers. The first in this series was the novel Hotel New Hampshire (1981), which sold well despite mixed reviews from critics. The book was quickly filmed, directed by Tony Richardson and starring Judy Foster, Rob Lowe and Beau Bridges. However, the film adaptation can hardly be called successful: the novel was too heavy to transfer it to the screen without losing many storylines and semantic layers.

In 1985, Irving published The Cider House Rules. The epic story revolves around an orphanage run by a drug-addicted obstetrician. Many people note a large number of parallels between this book and Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist. The central theme of the novel was the problem of abortion. Thanks to this book, Irving was in the midst of a debate raging in the United States between supporters and opponents of abortion. The position of the author himself, who is a supporter of the legalization of abortion, was influenced by the experience of his adoptive grandfather, who was an obstetrician-gynecologist.

After the publication of The World Through Garp’s Eyes, Irving was able to devote all his energies to writing, only occasionally getting a job as a teacher at various US universities (including once the author worked at his alma mater). Also, Irving serves as an assistant coach in the wrestling team of the university where his son is studying.

Irving’s next novel, A Prayer for Owen Meaney, is also a family epic set in New England. The central theme of the work is faith and religiosity (and the difference between the first and the second). The protagonist of the novel – a touching and tragic boy with small stature and a rough voice – turns out to be a man who knows in advance about his destiny, and his whole life, in fact, is a preparation for the main thing that awaits him at the end. In this book, there are fewer tragicomic situations than usual, in some ways, perhaps, it resembles the best novels of Irving’s friend and countryman Stephen King. As is often the case with King, in the life of the protagonist of “A Prayer for Owen Meaney” mystical, inexplicable cases happen every now and then, and he himself – as the reader understands at the end – may be another incarnation of Christ. In any case, no rational explanations can “justify” what happens in the novel.

The book was influenced by The Tin Drum by Günther Grass, The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Dickens. In A Prayer for Owen Meany, Irving for the first time in his work touched on the subject of the Vietnam War and its consequences for American society – especially the mandatory draft, which the author himself avoided as a married father of a child and a school teacher. Now “A Prayer for Owen Meaney” is often included in the lists of books recommended for school reading in the UK.

With his next book, Son of the Circus (1995), Irving returned to Random House. This is probably his darkest, most complex and difficult book, and one that lays aloof from the main themes of his previous novels. In the center of the plot are the memories of an Indian doctor living in Canada: about his childhood spent in a circus wandering around rural India, about the magical world of mysterious eccentrics and magicians. This work of the author is most often compared with the books of Charles Dickens. Despite mixed reviews from critics, “Son of the Circus” became a national bestseller, perhaps due to the fact that the author had by that time a reputation as a fashionable writer. Irving’s next book had to wait 3 years, at 1998, The Men Not in Her Life (also known as Widow for a Year) is published, which the New York Times called a “notable” book. Shortly after its release, the novel was filmed by director Tod Williams.

In 1999, after many years of intensive work, a film based on the novel The Cider House Rules was released. Directed by Lasse Hallström and starring Tobey Maguire, Charlize Theron, Delroy Lindo, Michael Caine. The film again found a place for the author’s cameo. The path of this book to the movie screen was very thorny. Then Irving will recall with irony that the work on the film cost “ two producers, four directors, thirteen years and countless rewrites of ‘s script.” The efforts paid off. The Winemaker’s Rules brought the author an Oscar for best screenplay and was also nominated for an award for best film.

Soon after, Irving published the book My Movie Business, in which he talked about his impressions of working on the film adaptation of The Winemakers’ Rules. To ensure the best sales for his new work, Irving took part in the CBC Television Hot Type television show. During the program, he allowed himself a few caustic remarks about another American writer, Tom Wolfe. A year later, Wolfe returned the favor on the same show, naming Irving, Updike, and Mailer as the three dolls scared of his new novel, The Full Body Man.

The next novel, The Fourth Hand (2001), partly takes place again in India. The protagonist, a photojournalist, loses his arm in an accident and after a transplant becomes the first person to receive a transplanted limb. Difficulties are being read because of the widow of the donor, who insists on meeting with the hand of her deceased husband. Like Irving’s previous books, The Fourth Hand has traditionally become a bestseller.

In 2004, a separate edition with illustrations by Tatiana Hauptmann released a children’s book, A Sound Like Someone Trying Not to Make a Sound, which was originally published as part of the novel Men Not in Her Life.

And the following year, Irving’s new novel, Until I Find You (2005), was released. It has more autobiographical moments than other books. The plot revolves around a successful actor, Jack Burns, who grew up without a father and dreams of finding him. While working on this book, the writer began to communicate with his half-brother and finally learned a little about the life and character of his real father. The New York Times reported that this novel reflected a real-life sexual assault experienced by the author at the age of 11.

In addition to the novels, the author wrote the collection Trying to Save Piggy Sneed, which includes previously unpublished short stories and a “miniature autobiography”, as well as a short nonfiction book, The Imaginary Girlfriend, dedicated to Irving’s views on writing and struggle.

In his writings, Irving expressed his deep affection for humanity in all its amazing diversity, as well as genuine admiration for the courage and sense of humor of men, women and children who struggle with life’s catastrophes.

The writer’s first marriage ended in 1981 and after that in 1987 he married a second time – to his literary agent Janet Turnbull. In honor of this event, to make a gift to his wife, Irving got a maple leaf tattoo on her left shoulder (his wife is Canadian). But the first tattoo on the arm is the starting round of the competition, because. John was wrestling. Irving has three children: sons Brendan and Colin from his first marriage and Everett from his second.

Today John Irving and his family live in Vermont and Toronto. He continues to write novels and adapt his previous works for film adaptations. And readers all over the world are looking forward to new books by this recognized master of ironic stories.

« If my ideas were important to me, I wouldn’t write novels. I am not an intellectual; I am a carpenter, I am a builder of stories .”

John Irving is not a science fiction writer, but the mystical element in the novels “A Prayer for Owen Meaney” and “The Fourth Hand” has a plot-forming character.

Washington Irving – a classic of American literature, a master of short romantic stories and historical research, the first professional writer in the United States, widely known in Europe. Essayist and poet, great lover of legends and mysticism, traveler and biographer, he also wrote under the pseudonyms Jonathan Oldstyle, Diedrich Knickerbocker, Geoffrey Cryan and Lancelot Langstaff. Realism and mysticism, fairy tales and fantasy are intertwined in his works.

Washington, the youngest of 11 Irving children, three of whom died in infancy, was born April 3, 1783 in New York. His father William, a Scot by birth, served as a junior naval officer near New York during the war with the French, where he met the beautiful Sarah Sanders, the granddaughter of an English vicar. They married in 1761 and moved to New York two years later. William Irving leaves the sea to engage in trade, but what business if British ships are firing on the city – the times of the American revolutionary war for independence have come. Washington, who was born in a house on William Street (near Wall Street), received his name in honor of one of the founders of the United States – George Washington. When the first president arrived in New York, the Irving maid caught him in the store and introduced him to the guy. “Please, Your Honor,” said Lizzie, “here’s a baby named after you!” Washington put his hand on the boy’s head and gave him his blessing. The father of the nation, perhaps, had no idea that he was blessing the father of American literature and his meticulous biographer!

Half-burnt during the struggle for independence, New York at the time of Irving’s birth was a town with a population of about twenty-three thousand inhabitants (immigrants from England and Holland), although a newspaper was published in it from 1732, and a theater existed from 1750.

From an early age, the boy was distinguished by daydreaming, impressionability, impracticality and extreme indifference to his father’s commercial activities. His best friends were always books: at school he read Cicero and Titus Livius in Latin and adored the poetry of Oliver Godsmith. Washington’s father was a God-fearing man who did not entertain children with entertainment. Serious discipline at home would have been unbearable were it not for the impulsive nature of the mother, who dearly loved her children. Washington was inflamed with love for music, literature, theater, largely thanks to James K. Paulding, whose sister was the wife of William, brother of W. Irving. Having completed his education by the age of 16, the dreamy Washington found food for thought in English literature. After reading “Robinson Crusoe”, “Gulliver” and “Sinbad”, he literally devours travel books, he travels around the district with his friend Paulding (later he will also become a writer).

After leaving school (1802), Irving was assigned to the Hoffmann law office. But Washington has not acquired a taste for jurisprudence. Irving travels along the Hudson (where you can meet the Flying Dutchman!), meets with the Indians, gets to Montreal. Washington discovered his literary inclinations as a child, writing humorous poems at the age of 10, and a play and an essay at 13. Washington’s first literary publications are the Letters of Jonathan Oldstyle, which appeared in 1802 in the Morning Chronicle, a newspaper founded by his brother Peter. It was a bold satire that ridiculed the theater and actors.

Irving’s fragile health forced his brothers to send Washington to Europe in 1804. On May 19th, he boarded a ship whose captain told himself that there was a guy on board who had a chance to go overboard before the voyage was over. But Irving made it safely to France, then moved to Italy. His health has been restored and he is surrounded by friends. Irving gets to London, he is accepted by the best society, the world is fascinated by his manners. Irving meets with a lot of people, visits the theater, opera, gets accustomed to the manners of people, their habits, customs.

Returning to New York in 1806, he continued his legal education without much interest and even received the title of barrister, but citing poor health, he left law and began to pursue what he had always wanted – literature. Irving, in collaboration with Paulding and brother William, produces the popular humorous almanac Salmagundi, a series of ironic sketches about the life and life of New York. Soon a tragic event occurs that influenced the writer’s entire later life – his beloved, the daughter of Judge Hoffman, the very one who taught him jurisprudence, dies. To forget, Irving plunges into work and in 1809New York History is published, a novel written by him alone (the brothers abandoned writing – one of them became a doctor, and the other inherited his father’s hardware and grocery trade). In this hoax chronicle, which parodied the life of Americans in the past and in the present, the author’s interest in history and historical flavor is already evident. Irving continued to write and publish poetry, theater criticism, and humoresques in Brother Peter’s newspaper.

During the war with England in 1812-1814, with the rank of colonel, Irving was aide-de-camp to the governor of New York, General Tompkins. He writes biographies of naval commanders, but this does not please the romantic writer. His mother dies, his father’s business suffers a financial collapse, and in 1815 Irving leaves for England with the last money, hoping for help from his brother Peter, who lived in London, and his married sister in Birmingham. It turned out that the author of the “Knickerbocker” was known in England, but he was looked upon as a curiosity in a civilized society. Forced to write for a living, Washington Irving immediately decided on the main theme of his work, he had his own character and his own style, which were born from humorous essays published in Salmagundi. Irving published a collection of travel notes, A Book of Sketches (1815), made by him during a trip to England under the influence of German folk tales. In 1819When reprinted, this book was published under the pseudonym “Jeffrey Cryan, Gentleman” and included two additional stories, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and “Rip Van Winkle” (included in the “Anthology” of the American Fiction Short Story), which are now considered the best works of the author, part of the golden fund of American literature. Bracebridge Hall (1822) and A Traveler’s Tales (1824) brought him a substantial income. In 1822-23. Irving lived in Dresden, in 1824 in London, where he even had a romantic relationship with Mary Shelley, and in 1825 in Paris. Many of Irving’s short stories are nothing more than science fiction, although sometimes the writer’s only plot is to a large extent mystical and mysterious. In such stories as, for example, “The Ghost Bridegroom” or “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”, the reader remains convinced of the extraordinary nature of what is happening until the last lines. And only the last lines of the work put everything in its place, and the revealed realism of the situation seems to be the only reasonable explanation.

“Although Irving has repeatedly admitted that he is concerned about everything mystical and supernatural, in his short stories he consistently, in the American spirit, destroyed the atmosphere of the mysterious. Being the heir of enlightenment ideas and admirer of Reason and not believing in otherworldly and “terrible”, the writer nevertheless felt attracted to the wonderful world of fiction. .. levels. It has its roots in a legend, which, by definition, is a poetic tale about some event, character, area, closely related to myth. The main implication of Irving’s short stories is rather not the poetization of everyday life, but the poetization of the past in this life, the peculiar coloring of the first settlers that has departed, ”L. Romanchuk notes in his article“ Fiction in V. Irving’s short stories.

Irving spent several years (1826-29) in Spain studying manuscripts and books dating back to the American discovery. In Madrid, he comes to the disposal of A. Everett, who headed the American diplomatic mission, who offered Irving to translate a number of documents related to the travels of Columbus. In 1828, Irving published The Life and Travels of Christopher Columbus in three volumes, a comprehensive historical and biographical work in which he seeks to elevate Columbus into a kind of romantic archetype of a dreamer, gifted with a rich and at the same time dazzling imagination and, by virtue of this, doomed to eternal quest and suffering. Three years later, this work was supplemented by Travels and Discoveries of the Companions of Columbus. Irving was carried away by the study of Arab-Spanish history and the Reconquista (“Chronicle of the conquest of Granada”, 1829- a semi-fictional chronicle of the struggle of the Spaniards with the Moors, which he allegedly translated from a medieval manuscript attributed to him by the Dominican monk Antonio Agapida). In Spain, Irving ends up in the famous Alhambra Palace, a three-month stay in which inspires him to write a book of the same name, containing, in addition to historical descriptions and essays, many magnificent legends that have become favorite short stories of millions of readers (including A.S. Pushkin, who borrowed elements of the legend of the Golden Cockerel).

By the end of the 1820s, his popularity as a writer and thinker was so high that Irving was elected an honorary member of the Real Academia de la Historia (1828) in Spain. A year later, in London, he receives a gold medal in history from the Royal Society of Literature (Royal Society of Literature), and soon honorary degrees from Oxford, Columbia University and Harvard. In 1829-1832, Irving served as an attaché at the American Legation in London. When in 1832 Washington Irving returned to his homeland in the United States, he was awaited by a triumphant reception and the glory of a living classic.

The book of the Alhambra series of short stories was published in 1832, the year of his arrival in his homeland, where he returned as a famous writer and national hero. Subsequently, Irving supplements and reworks the Alhambra until 1851. At home, Irving continues to travel – in 1833 he sets off along the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, came into contact with the life of the American frontier. Three new volumes of entertaining essays on the prairie, the pioneers and the Indians are published – Journey on the Prairie (1835), Astoria (1836) and The Adventures of Captain Bonville (1837). In 1836, Irving moved to the town of Tarrytown and settled in his Dutch-built manor Sunnyside on the Hudson, near Sleepy Hollow and away from New York.

In 1842, Irving visits Spain for the second time as an American ambassador, having spent four years at the Spanish court on assignment from US President Tyler. Upon his return, he finally settled in Tarrytown where, in seclusion, he wrote biographical books and gave light on political issues. The Arab-Muslim theme continued to occupy the writer – he writes “Legends of the conquest of Spain” and “Mohammed and his successors” (1849).

After the death of his fiancée Matilda Hoffmann, Irving never married or had children. For a quarter of a century he lived in Sunnyside with his younger brother Ebenezer and his five daughters, who became his real family.

His first Complete Works appeared in New York in 1848-50 and then in London in 1851 (in 15 volumes). After the death of Irving, in 1860-61 his complete works (21 volumes) were published. The most complete collection of his works to date was released in the United States in 30 volumes published over 20 years (1969-1989).

A few months before Washington’s death, Irving completed a five-volume biography of George Washington. Irving considered biographical books to be his most significant works, but ironically, it was his short stories from three European collections, in which the spirit of the first Dutch settlers hovers, ironic stories about America and the mores of its people, that have become classics today. Washington Irving died at his home in Tarrytown, New York, on the eve of the Civil War. On the day of Irving’s funeral December 1, 1859All shops were closed, the city was in mourning. He was buried in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery near the Old Dutch Church.

In Russia during the Pushkin era, Irving’s stories were published in many periodicals (Athene, Telescope, Moscow Telegraph, Literaturnaya Gazeta, etc.). The story “Rip Van Winkle”, for example, was first translated into Russian by the Decembrist Nikolai Bestuzhev, and the story “The Life of Mohammed” by Peter Kireevsky.

Recurring themes

In Irving’s works, the same themes, symbols, types of characters, cities and places are constantly found. These “recurring stories” include New England (a region in the northwest of the United States), Vienna, bears, prostitutes, writers of various kinds (writers, journalists, authors of children’s books, diaries, family chronicles), wrestling (sport) , fatal accidents, children abandoned by one (or both) parents, participation in filming, atypical sexual relationships (incest, bestiality, relationships between a young man and an older woman). Also, from one novel by Irving to another, the image of a woman is daring and pretentious, but at the same time fragile and tender.
