Why is Accredited Care Important?

National accreditation is an additional criteria used to determine the quality of a child care program. Family child care homes and child care centers may pursue accreditation in order to increase the quality of their care. Accredited providers must meet higher standards than those set forth by licensing. These programs offer the kind of care, attention, and educational activities parents look for in quality child care programs, in addition to offering activities and experiences that will aid in a child’s growth and development and that will help prepare them for school.

The Military Child Care in Your Neighborhood (MCCYN) fee assistance program is an extension of the child care services offered through the various installations within the United States. Qualifying military sponsors for the MCCYN program must be connected to an accredited child care provider to ensure their children are receiving community child care of comparable quality to the type of care administered at installation-based Child Development Centers or Child Development Homes.

Sponsors who qualify for the Military Child Care in Your Neighborhood (MCCYN) program must select a child care provider that meets one of the following requirements for accreditation:

Child Care Centers:

  • National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC)
  • National Accreditation Commission (NAC)
  • National Early Childhood Program Accreditation (NECPA)
  • Council on Accreditation (COA)
  • Cognia – NCA/SACS/NWAC (formerly AdvancED)*
  • Middle States Accreditation *
  • Maryland State Dept of Education (MSDE) Accreditation
  • Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI)*
  • Accredited Professional Preschool Learning Environment – APPLE (Effective 1-1-2022)
  • American Montessori Society – AMS (Effective 1-1-2022)
  • Association Montessori International/USA – AMI/USA (Effective 1-1-2022)

*Please note – accreditation must include early learning component to be approved for the fee assistance program

Family Child Care:

Non-accredited facilities operating in select states may click here for more information about qualifying for MCCYN-PLUS.

In order for family child care providers to meet MCCYN requirements, they must be state licensed, inspected annually, and have achieved one of the following:

  • Child Development Associate (CDA) credential awarded by the Council for Professional Recognition
  • Associate’s degree or higher in Early Childhood Education (ECE) or Child Development (CD) **Transcript showing 24 or more credit hours in ECE or CD also accepted**

Contract Administrator | Careers in Construction

About

Ask yourself. ..

  • Can you review contracts and specifications to determine company commitments and obligations?
  • Do you have a good understanding of contract law and regulation?
  • Do you have strong administrative and organizational skills?

If the answer to these questions is yes, then a career as a Contract Administrator could be right for you.

Contract administrators must be familiar with all of the details in a project contract and subcontract documents, including all plans and specifications described in the each.

Contract administrators are employed by project owners, project designers and engineers, and by general contractors. In smaller organizations, contract administrators may also perform other tasks.

Duties

Contract administrators perform the following types of activities:

  • Review plans, specifications and contracts to ensure the correct equipment, material and subcontractor services are ordered and/or purchased
  • Determine or negotiate contract terms and conditions, award supplier contracts or recommend contract awards
  • Manage paperwork related to contracts
  • Establish delivery schedules, monitor progress, and contact clients and suppliers to resolve problems
  • Work with project managers, architects, engineers, owners and others to make sure project goals are met

Work Conditions

In most cases, contract administrators work in an office. As part of large construction projects, they can work in an external office on a work site. In either case, they will devote part of their time to the work site to ensure that the equipment and materials meet the requirements of the contract or sub-contract.

As with all careers in the construction industry, safety is the top priority. While on construction or other job sites, contract administrators must be aware of and comply with all relevant safety policy and procedures.

Training and Certification

US-based CSI (Construction Specifications Institute) is a good source of information for this occupation and offers a number of certifications. For more information, visit csiresources.org. Check out their YouTube channel for a wealth of videos.

A bachelor’s degree or college diploma in business administration, commerce or economics is usually required.

Contract administrators dealing with contracts or subcontracts for specialized projects may require a related university degree or college diploma. For example, a bachelor’s degree or college diploma in engineering may be required for purchasers of industrial products.

Experience in the construction industry is beneficial.

Spelling of noun suffixes (IK/EK, IC/EC, ICHK/ECK, INK/ENK).

Today we analyze one of the constituent parts of tasks 11 USE – the spelling of suffixes. In this task, you must understand that you may be asked about an unknown suffix of words of completely different parts of speech – verbs, gerunds, adjectives, adverbs and nouns.

Statistically, noun suffixes usually seem fairly simple to graduates, but there are many dangerous moments where mistakes can be made.

In most nouns, the following principle works: if, when changing the form of a word, we meet the letter AND in the suffix or in the stem, most likely it will be in the suffix.

So, to systematize knowledge, we will use a table in which two columns are the suffixes themselves, a rule with examples.

Suffixes

Rule

-EK-

If the vowel drops out during the declension of the word, it is written E

no call

-IK-

If the vowel in the declension of the word if NOT drops out, it is written AND

no ball

-IC-K-

the letter I is written if the word is formed from the noun f. R. on -IC-;

water ← water,

-ECK-

in other cases, the letter E is written

cup → cup

-IN-K-

-in-k- is written in words formed from a stem ending in the suffix -in.

Understanding Play-based Learning vs Montessori Learning Style

It might come as a surprise to some parents that learning styles can come into play (pun intended) at such a young age. However, you’ll soon begin to notice that many preschools advertise specific learning styles.

We’re going to talk about Montessori vs play based preschool and we’ll begin by taking an in-depth look at each educational journey.

Montessori Based Learning

Montessori based learning owes its inception to Maria Montessori, a pioneering female Italian doctor. In the early 1900s, she began researching and teaching her new approach to human development as it pertains to learning and the classroom known as the Montessori method. She was particularly interested in preschool-aged children and how they learn.

Since the first Montessori school opened in Canada in 1912, today there have been over twenty thousand Montessori schools and preschools created around the world. You have probably seen a sign for one and thought, what is a Montessori daycare?

Maria and therefore Montessori schools, believe that play is a child’s version of “work”. This is the main difference between Montessori and daycare. Through play kids learn both social and cognitive skills. In Montessori philosophy, the “work” that a child can choose for themselves in a classroom is centered around the children’s interests.

Most times they choose their own “work” and for an uninterrupted period of time, they engage with the activity at their own pace. This form of child-directed, active, and individualized learning is believed to increase a child’s confidence, independence, self-regulation, and self-discipline. Of course, a Montessori teacher is there to guide, monitor, and track children; while it may be teacher-directed, teachers do not take an authoritarian role.

Montessori Activities and Setting

Are you left wondering how is Montessori different from just playing? The Montessori approach to play is not just periods of play-time. Instead, it is structured in terms of activities.

Montessori activities commonly pertain to five learning goals: math, language, culture, practical life, and sensorial. The “works” are carefully chosen to teach these things. When younger children in Montessori preschools have time to play, the time is usually unlimited or open-ended while the work available is more structured.

An example of these types of works are pouring and scooping, dressing frames, number rod addition, tower building, and animal classification. They are all hands-on and require the Montessori children to direct themselves through the activity instead of having a teacher lead them.

What would a Montessori kindergarten or Montessori playgroup look like? Montessori environments tend to be calm and child-centered. They often won’t have a lot of loud colors, busy posters, characters, or distractions. In a Pre-K Montessori, everything is usually at child level and thoughtful materials and resources are placed around the nursery room, sometimes separated by sections (like a math section, a life skills section, etc.). Most of these materials are made of natural products and resemble real-life objects. Though it’s important to note that these life-skill objects differ from pretend play.

Students in Montessori preschools typically are taught in small groups. The groups can be composed of children of varying ages. The teachers understand the developmental stages and facilitate group and individual learning appropriately in these multi-age classrooms but this is usually true of daycares too if you’re debating on Montessori vs daycare.

With Montessori play and learn you may find children working at a table, sitting on the floor, or standing at a sensory bin. One of the biggest differences you’ll notice when it comes to Montessori vs traditional preschool is that children often have a choice of what to do, where to do it, and how long to do it.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Montessori Classroom Learning

Montessori childcare is hugely child-centered, which can be awesome. However, it isn’t ideal for all children. Here are some of the drawbacks and benefits of Montessori education.

Advantages:

  • Allows children to move at their own pace instead of having to sit and listen to a teacher
  • Usually a calm and soothing environment
  • Promotes self-regulation and discipline
  • Can help build social skills in reserved children while offering a lot of alone time
  • See’s each child as an individual
  • Teaches a lot of life skills and critical thinking skills with emphasis on character education

Disadvantages:

  • Doesn’t emulate most formal schools that don’t allow self-direct and self-paced learning, making it hard for some kids to transition
  • Not ideal for highly social children due to its often small student community and ample time spent on individual work/play
  • Looking at Montessori vs regular preschool, Montessori can be more costly. So you’ll need to decide is Montessori preschool worth it

Play-Based Learning

We’re willing to bet you’re still wondering, is Montessori play-based learning? Let’s take a deeper look at play-based daycare. Play-based is like Montessori program, in that children learn through play, but it is different.

Play-based is more structured in terms of time, with children alternating between free play and teacher-guided learning activities. Play-based traditional preschool is less structured in terms of the kind of play. Children can play with dolls, build with blocks, and other socio-dramatic types of things instead of more developed, purposeful types of play meant to teach concrete skills. Play-based skills also tend to allow more imaginative play than Montessori.

Why so much play? Well, play-based schools believe that children learn through play. They can learn creativity, social skills, problem solving, negotiation, cognitive skills, cooperation, self-reflection, and much more through play-based activities.

Play-based Activities and Setting

The classroom setting usually will have centers, like a dress-up area and a nature area. It allows posters, characters, loud colors, and bright designs; not only focusing on natural materials. Though much of the day at a play-based school is spent playing at different centers, there is some formal instruction or educational lessons.

Oftentimes this will occur in a group and though a teacher will facilitate it will still largely be student-led. A play-based program is usually highly interactive and not very formal, using hands-on tasks instead of repetition or rote memory.

Like Montessori classrooms, play is important in these traditional preschools. However, the type of play varies with play-based schools giving children more “free” playtime and encouraging pretend and dramatic play. There is less emphasis on academics in play-based preschools as well as fewer manipulatives, and defined, thoughtful, concrete materials.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Play-Based Preschool Learning

Play-based learning suits some kids very well, but other children may find the environment challenging.

Advantages:

  • Lets your kid be a kid and play with others, not putting too much emphasis on academics at a young age
  • Promotes imagination and creativity through creative play
  • Builds social skills
  • An inviting environment for most kids
  • Hands-on and child-centered

Disadvantages:

  • The loose structure can be hard for children who thrive on routine and structure
  • Can make the transition to formal school difficult because of the open-ended playtime and lack of structure
  • The environment can be too busy and loud for some children

How To Know If Montessori Method Is Right For Your Child, or If Play-based Approach Is The Better Option for Young Children

It can be a lot to think about, deciding is Montessori good for your little one, or should you consider a play-based daycare. Starting with a tour can help. Touring the school can let you see what a typical classroom and day might look like. You should be able to meet with the teacher, see the materials, and observe how the children interact with each other and the classroom.

You may decide your child is outgoing, busy, and would thrive in a play-based center. Or, possibly, that your child is more reserved, task-oriented, and would benefit from a Montessori class.

If you’re deciding what approach to take at home, look closely at the materials and the way in which they are used. Does your child like to be imaginative, play pretend, and use their creativity? Or, do they love goal-oriented work? This may direct you to the best solution concerning playful learning and Montessori education.

Don’t just choose a school based on the philosophy as each approach can have awesome schools and not-so-great schools. Take a look at reviews, talk to other parents, and try to gauge the quality of the relationship between educators, students, and parents when you go for a visit.  What you want is to have a nurturing environment for your child’s early learning.

Safety and practicality play a role too. Make sure the school is accredited, clean, safe, and organized. Additionally, be sure that the cost is affordable, the drive isn’t too far, and that your schedules align.

Though the two approaches are very similar, most schools will not offer a combined approach. It is either one or the other. However, parents wishing to recreate these approaches at home will likely have more freedom to use a combination of the two.

Creating Play-based vs Montessori Environments At Home

If you wish to create a play-based or Montessori environment at home, here are some easy ways to do so!

Play-based Environment

You probably already have most of what you need to have a play-based environment at home! Play-based consists of activities your child likes to do with no objective, end-goal, or time constraints. You don’t need to have an agenda; let your child choose something and then allow them unstructured time to enjoy doing it!

You don’t need a lot of specific tools or toys for imaginative play.

Here are a few examples:

  • Dress up
  • Building with blocks
  • Finger painting
  • Sensory bins
  • Outside exploration

Remember, you’re not trying to teach academics or have your child achieve something. Instead, you’re letting them learn and explore their world through play.

Montessori Playroom

A Montessori playroom will often take a bit more setup. Here are a few tips:

  • Keep everything organized. It should have a bin, a spot on a Montessori shelf, or a drawer and always return to its assigned space
  • Everything should be easily accessible to your kid and at child-level
  • This includes drinks and snacks as children should be able to choose when to eat or drink
  • Keep the environment calm and soothing
  • Fill the space with engaging, Montessori designed “works” and rotate them as you see fit (usually every few weeks)

Montessori? Waldorf? Play-Based? Don’t Decide Until You Read This!

So Many Choices for your Child’s Education: Montessori? Waldorf? Play-Based? Don

’t Decide Until You Read This!

It can be a bit overwhelming, right?  Adding to this overwhelming input: the number of good-intentioned friends and family that volunteer their recommendations.   Everyone has an opinion. Your best friend from college, your grandmother, your neighbor – it seems that everyone has an opinion on the best preschool program for your child.  And, once you look online… forget about it! “Experts” from across the world are ready to chime in with a solution for you.

The unfortunate reality is that there are so many options for early childhood education, that many parents avoid the research process and choose a program for the wrong reasons like the distance from home or because the teacher seemed really nice.

Don’t make that mistake. Your child’s first exposure to education will be in the program that you choose now. It’s best to gather some basic information about your options and use it to make the right decision.

Only You Know the Answer

Choosing an early childhood program for your child is a personal decision. No one knows your child as well as you – his strengths, challenges, personality and temperament should all factor into your decision
. Despite the best of intentions, the friend who recommended her preschool doesn’t know your child well enough to make the decision for you.

How I Can Help You

In my experience, most parents research three major methods of early childhood education : Montessori, Waldorf and Play-Based. To help in your decision, I wrote a brief synopsis of each method below.

MONTESSORI

Maria Montessori was an Italian physician and scientist who devoted 60 years of her life to studying and observing children.

Montessori education encompasses 3 basic tenants:

  1. All children develop in their own unique way – not in a strict linear progression.
  2. Children develop through interaction with their environment.
  3. Children develop best when they are allowed to pursue their interests.

Dr. Montessori created classrooms that support children’s developmental needs by giving them extraordinarily rich learning environments filled with carefully designed materials to make abstract concepts understandable. She demonstrated respect for each child’s unique developmental timetable, presenting new concepts to a child when he was most interested and capable of learning them. And, within those rich classroom environments, she trained her teachers to serve and follow the child. As a result, children are given the opportunity to choose what they were most interested in learning.

All children from the ages of 0 to 6 years are guided by two powerful intrinsic forces: an absorbent mind and sensitive periods.

  1. The absorbent mind allows children to simply absorb from their environment effortlessly and easily – much like a sponge absorbs water. What the young child sees and experiences will indelibly be imprinted on his brain. The child does not have to apply himself to learn anything – he simply absorbs impressions and information from the environment.
  2. Young children are guided by sensitive periods – powerful, time-sensitive phases of profound interest to learn. These windows of opportunity start closing at 4 and by 6 years of age, they are forever gone.

In Montessori schools, work is the child’s play.
A century ago, Dr. Montessori discovered that children will almost always abandon pretend toys when they are offered “real things” to do. Instead of pretending to cook, Montessori children cut apples and serve them to their friends, they bake bread from scratch and wash and dry the dirty dishes, and they make flower arrangements from flowers they pick from their garden. They relish doing what they see adults doing in their environment and take pride in being independent.

Children learn at their own pace in a Montessori classroom. The focus is on developing the potential of each individual child.
A child moves through the curriculum at her own rate, and she is not taken to the next concept until she has demonstrated that she has a solid understanding of prior concepts.

Teachers in Montessori classrooms serve as guides for the children. They act as the link between the child and the rich learning materials found in these classrooms. Instead of teaching to an entire class or to groups, teachers guide the individual child, observing her carefully to make sure she is ready for the lesson and that it is a match for what she is interested in learning.

Classrooms contain groupings of children across mixed-aged spans.  Primary classes house children ages 2.5 through Kindergarten. They are collaborative learning environments with student mentors. Older children serve as role models for the younger children, showing great compassion and kindness toward their younger friends. Their work with the more advanced materials excites and interests the younger ones who want to emulate and be like their older friends. Being the oldest in the class affords the opportunity to develop strong leadership skills.  Montessori children stay in the same classrooms for 3 or 4 years, which promotes a close relationship between teacher and child.

Montessori is a holistic approach to educating the child – it is seen as an aid to life. A child’s development of independence is of paramount importance. The more a child can do for himself, the more he will look to the future with the confidence that he is competent and capable.

Character education is also of deep importance in the Montessori philosophy. Children receive many lessons in the social graces that grease human interactions. At Wheaton Montessori School, we call this portion of our curriculum “Grace and Courtesy.” And, in the living laboratory of the classroom, children are supported in developing strong social skills.

WALDORF

Like Montessori, Waldorf cares about and educates “the whole child”. They want every child to reach her individual potential, to be excited about learning and the world around her, to care about and treat her fellow human beings with respect.

Additionally, like Montessori, Waldorf takes a developmental approach to education. Waldorf sees the development of the child divided roughly into three stages (birth to 7, 7 to 14, and 14 to 18). There are characteristics and needs that accompany each stage, and teachers are trained to bring appropriate learning content to each of these stages in order to support and nourish healthy growth.

Waldorf classrooms are beautifully designed. Well-crafted toys made of wood and silk are designed to stimulate fantasy and pretend play.

The Waldorf preschool-kindergarten program places an emphasis on fantasy and imagination as well as storytelling, rhyming and movement games. Their early childhood education programs are experiential (hands-on-involvement) and sensory-based.  Practical activities are provided for the children to be able to imitate what they see the adults around them doing, like baking, and gardening. Music, art and story telling are large components of the program.

Abstract learning (using symbols to learn to read, write or calculate mathematically) is discouraged. Waldorf feels that if children are exposed to intellectual learning too early (before 6-7 years of age), it will detract from their optimum physical, social and emotional growth. Therefore, they encourage children in the preschool years to engage in fantasy and pretend play.

Waldorf educators take a particularly hard stand against the use of television and all electronics, because they don’t believe that they support children’s developmental needs. They, instead, want to protect and insulate the young child in that first stage of development by keeping him away from the realities of the world until he is developmentally capable of handling those realities.

Unlike Montessori, Waldorf education is a registered trademark name that allows for complete control over its governance and teacher-training programs. Teachers go through an extensive and thorough training in Waldorf philosophy and practices before they can work with children.

PLAY-BASED PROGRAMS

The theory surrounding play-based programs is that children learn best when they’re having fun, and “fun” is defined as playing. They believe that work-based, rigid approaches to learning actually turn a child off to leaning and that these do not provide children with positive attitudes and skills necessary to succeed as future learners.

Play-based theory uses children’s “play” as the vehicle for developing social skills, imagination, creativity, inner motivation and motor skills. They believe play promotes imagination and creativity and that long un-interrupted periods of play fosters concentration by allowing the child to get deeply involved in an activity. Inner motivation grows when the child has free choice in her play activity; this is seen as the child taking responsibility for her own learning.

The role of the adult in play-based preschool programs is to guide and extend children’s play experiences. They try to figure out what it is the child is learning and then work to support and extend that learning by adding more materials and asking questions or joining in on their play.

There doesn’t seem to be an over-arching theoretical framework to play-based programs in the same way that there are with Waldorf and Montessori. Different theorists add to “the pot” in defining play-based thinking. Some proponents value completely free, unstructured play time while others believe in structured experiences that the adult creates and enrichment opportunities carried out by specialists (yoga, music or Spanish instruction).

The teacher qualifications to work in play-based preschool programs are minimal.  In California, for example, four college classes, valued at 3 units each, are the sole requirements to become a lead preschool teacher.

Whatever philosophical framework you embrace, remember what matters most is the people who will be with your child. Take your time and go observe in a number of settings
so that you begin to get a good feeling of what resonates with you.

Montessori method – the essence and principles of one of the most successful approaches to parenting

The beginning of the twentieth century literally divided the history of mankind into before and after, because life has undergone incredible changes and required new moral guidelines, approaches to education and upbringing, and the organization of work and leisure. It was a period of bold experiments and amazing discoveries. Despite all the social upheavals, people of the twentieth century became freer and more progressive, which means that upbringing and education had to change a lot, because the kids had to grow up in a completely new world.

The observations and innovations of the Italian doctor Maria Montessori became a real breakthrough in pedagogy, since her approach had both a good theoretical basis and brilliant results in practice. In this article, we will try to highlight all the main features of Montessori education and discuss for which children classes according to the M. Montessori method are best suited.

Basic Montessori Methods

To summarize the main ideas of the Maria Montessori Method, it is important to first explain the beliefs behind the approach:

1. The child develops following his natural interests and thanks to the experience independently gained on their basis,

can become the only full-fledged source of knowledge and skills for the development of a child,

It is these beliefs that determine the style of interaction between children and adults who have chosen the M. Montessori method for their kids.

The approach is distinguished by a specially organized environment (didactic material located in the free access of the child), corresponding to the age of the children; the leading position of the child, his independence and free choice of activities; respectful and attentive attitude of adults to the individual needs of the baby.

Let us briefly formulate the basic principles of the Maria Montessori method:

0003

2. Lack of a unified program and compulsory curriculum for all pupils, an individual approach to each child,

3. Classes according to the M. Montessori method are held in a group of different ages,

4. Any Montessori session requires a prepared environment, orderly and varied teaching materials,

5. An adult follows the child’s interests, supervises the children’s work and participates very limitedly in their independent activities.

Now, let’s study in more detail the features of the Montessori methodology and start with what goals the Montessori teacher faces depending on the age of the pupils.

Montessori Learning Objectives by Age

The approach provides education for children from birth to secondary school, while the focus, and hence the techniques used in the Montessori environment, depend on the age of the child. Below we offer a table in which the main goals of Montessori teaching children at different age stages are formulated.

Child’s age

Montessori learning objectives

Basic techniques and formats

From birth to three years

  • Building confidence in the world and basic self-confidence,

  • development of coordination and fine motor skills,

  • speech development,

  • achieving independence by mastering simple everyday activities

  • Mastering household skills (maintaining cleanliness, caring for yourself and your clothes, etc.)

  • Development of gross motor skills (gymnastics, walking and running, overcoming obstacles),

  • Development of fine motor skills (grasping objects, carrying things, using simple tools and cutlery),

  • Development of memory, attention and thinking based on experience of interaction with the environment,

  • Speech development (learning individual sounds, naming objects, using different parts of speech)

Three to six years old

  • Development of independence and various forms of self-regulation,

  • social development through communication with peers and elders,

  • improvement of sensory perception,

  • laying down the principles of scientific thinking,

  • familiarity with the account and the development of reading and writing,

  • creative development and self-expression

  • Continued development of everyday skills (table setting, dressing, cleaning, mastering the rules of etiquette),

  • Active sensory development (development of objects with different textures, colors, shapes, smells, etc. , their comparison and classification),

  • Development of literate speech, writing and reading with the help of special didactic materials according to the Montessori method,

  • Acquaintance with the world of numbers, mastering the account and practical study of the concept of number

Six to twelve years old

  • Intellectual development and the acquisition of in-depth knowledge about the world,

  • Development of self-confidence, independence and imagination,

  • Study of the social structure of the world, understanding the role of the individual in the community

A comprehensive study of the experience accumulated by mankind and more specialized classes devoted to the study of the universe, wildlife, humanity, language and the world of exact sciences

From twelve to fifteen years old

  • Study of economic relationships in practice,

  • Awareness of one’s role in various groups and communities,

  • Practical application of scientific knowledge,

  • Development of the capacity for self-expression

Unfortunately, the methodology was not developed by Maria Montessori herself, however, the followers of the approach actively use group work, scientific discussions, individual educational plans and practical work for the personal and professional development of adolescents

Even from this table it can be seen that the development of a harmonious personality must certainly begin at a very early age, which is why Montessori teaching methods are used primarily in preschool institutions, because in the future Montessori graduates are much more adaptive and achieve better results in the schools of the most different approaches.

First of all, the essence of the Montessori methodology for children of all ages is education based on the individual strengths and interests of each child. Montessori education encourages children to explore the world around them and find their own place in this world.

The Montessori method – for which children is this approach suitable?

Surprisingly, we often meet parents who are convinced that Montessori teaching methods are suitable only for gifted and “naturally” motivated children. It seems to parents that if their son or daughter is not forced to study, they will simply lie on the couch all day.

In fact, you should always remember that children’s curiosity and desire to explore the world is an innate quality of absolutely any child. The described passivity is most often caused by external factors: an unsuitable environment and an incorrectly organized daily routine, the wrong behavior of adults, and the child’s poor health.

Despite the fact that all Montessori techniques are associated with the free choice of the child and his almost unlimited movement around the classroom, even the most “uncontrollable” and “complex” children eventually successfully join the process.

However, if it seems to you that at first it will be difficult for your child in Montessori group classes or you are worried about some peculiarities of the child’s health, all branches of our club offer individual lessons so that the child has additional adult attention for easier adaptation to a new environment.

Montessori Kindergarten – What to Expect from Known Method Classes

The Montessori method is in demand both at school and in preschools. However, in Moscow, most often classes according to the method of Maria Montessori are designed for children under 6-7 years old, after which they successfully transfer to both specialized Montessori schools and general education institutions. Given this peculiarity of Moscow education, we have developed both a program exclusively based on the Montessori method, and groups where Montessori teaching methods and its basic principles are organically combined with more traditional formats for classes for kids, as well as visits to a speech therapist and other specialists.

Montessori kindergarten environment stimulates children’s cognitive activity. All Montessori classes are divided into zones: practical life, sensorics, language, mathematics, space (the surrounding world), creativity. Each zone is filled with a variety of educational items and didactic games, interacting with which the child independently studies the properties and functions of things and learns new things.

In a Montessori kindergarten, there is always a lot of space and educational materials, children always have the opportunity to choose an activity to their liking, and kindergarten teachers who have received special training in the Montessori method only help children make independent discoveries.

A nice bonus for parents who have opted for a kindergarten using the Montessori method will also be the presence of regular consultations for parents, where teachers and child psychologists reveal in detail the tasks of the method, share the successes of pupils, and also give recommendations on education for the Montessori method at home.

Conclusions

Education according to the method of Maria Montessori is qualitatively different from traditional approaches: an adult does not conduct lessons and does not require you to put your hands on a desk and listen carefully, children have the opportunity and time to learn what they are interested in, and a specially organized environment makes sure that “interesting” was always and “useful”. Thanks to these conditions, the method has received international recognition, graduates of Montessori gardens consistently demonstrate interest in learning, developed self-control skills and successfully master the school curriculum, and parents are proud of their talented, independent and truly happy children.

Conclusion

The network of children’s Montessori clubs “Sozvezdie” is one of the leaders in pre-school Montessori education in Moscow. All our specialists have basic and additional education in the field of child psychology and the organization of education for preschoolers, regularly undergo advanced training, participate in scientific discussions and research, exchange experience with foreign colleagues, and, most importantly, love children, have extensive experience working with them and are able to become real friends for kids.

The success of “Constellation” is fifteen years of work, more than 36,000 satisfied graduates, regular updating of teaching materials and toys, as well as constant monitoring of the safety of each child.

We are always open to new acquaintances and are happy to show the life of our club from the inside. To get to know us, it is enough to sign up for a free trial lesson through the form on the website or by calling us at +7 (499) 686-10-35.

Montessori methodology in kindergartens

For more than a hundred years, Montessori methods have been used in preschool institutions for the upbringing and development of children. It is based on the principle of independence, and the training itself takes place taking into account individual characteristics. The technique helps the child to successfully integrate into society. The goal of the system is to form a whole person who understands his own individuality and respects someone else’s. It develops independently, being in an environment equipped with didactic materials for its development.

Learning takes place without the slightest coercion. Children move freely around the kindergarten classrooms, choosing activities to their liking in one of five zones:

  • practical life skills zone;
  • sensor;
  • math zone;
  • speech development zone;
  • area for the study of nature and culture.

All spaces are created for the harmonious development of the child. Didactic materials and items are on open shelves, any child has access to them. The system encourages the child’s curiosity and encourages him to explore the world around him.

Methods of the system are mainly focused on the development of sensory. This includes exercises to train the eye, the development of skills to distinguish the most subtle nuances of taste and smell. Fine motor skills classes prepare the child for school, where he will learn to read and write.

During the training, the child’s attentiveness develops, his self-motivation is formed.

Benefits of the Montessori method in kindergartens

The method has a large number of advantages that make it so attractive for kindergartens:

  1. 1. Children develop at their own pace, taking into account the characteristics of each child’s character. Educators do not put pressure on the child, but only help him develop independently.
  2. 2. The team is made up of children of different ages, based on common interests, and not on the age factor.
  3. 3. The main way of knowing the world is discovery. Each child rediscovers the surrounding reality, and educators contribute to the development of curiosity in him.
  4. 4. In accordance with the methodology, the child learns to be aware of his own freedom and respect the individual space of another person.
  5. 5. No negative criticism.
  6. 6. Much attention is paid to development through sensory perception. The development of fine motor skills is the fundamental principle of the system.
  7. 7. Each child learns through his interaction with other older children. It is they who explain simple things and help to take care of each other.
  8. 8. The system teaches children personal responsibility and develops in them the skills to make their own independent decisions.
  9. 9. For children studying in this system, self-service skills become elementary.
  10. 10. The child is free to choose the problems to be solved.
  11. 11. The methodology is not based on national cultural characteristics and is easily translated into any education system.

The obtained results of using the methodology in private kindergartens allow us to speak about its success. At the same time, there are some features of the system that should be taken into account. For example, a child who has begun to study according to this method will face difficulties when entering a school that does not apply Montessori principles in its teaching. For example, there is no teacher-mentor working with children in the school education system.

Since the Montessori method, like any other, has two sides, it is worth remembering some of its shortcomings. For example, since classes involve more individual creativity and development of the child, it may be difficult to develop communication skills.

In order for freedom not to turn into permissiveness, children accustomed to it must, at the same time, face the limits and limits set by adults.

The methodology does not use fairy tales and games, which are so common in familiar systems of preschool education. Their absence is due to the fact that the author of the system considered them to be a departure from reality.

The effectiveness of the Montessori method is proved by the fact that English preschool and school institutions widely use it for educating children. But everyone knows that the UK education system is considered one of the most advanced by world standards.

Graduates of Montessori groups become students of the most prestigious schools and show high results there. And this is not surprising, because the system develops the horizons of the child, teaches him to think, develops motivation to learn new things. The child is able to concentrate on business and independently finds ways to solve problems.

Who Montessori is for

The most effective parenting method may be successful for some children and not enough for others, depending on their individual characteristics. The method will be successful for the children of those parents who easily give the child freedom. In this case, individual training will be beneficial. If the parent himself is not ready to let go of the child, to allow him to be independent and independent, the system will not be useful.

Activities with a creative streak will be difficult in groups, as insufficient attention is paid to creativity in training. The issue can be resolved through additional classes, including the implementation of these abilities of the baby.

The same applies to hyperactive mobile children. Their energy will not be fully realized and will require additional output. It can be sports activities or outdoor activities.

Since children learn to negotiate with each other, but do not develop much communication skills, shy children should socialize more with their peers in order to learn how to overcome their shyness.

Any deficiency can be compensated for by additional activities or communication with peers. And the advantages of the technique are undeniable and allow the child to take shape in a self-sufficient person.

The method is based on respect for the child’s personality, interests and needs. Educators are assistants to children, helping them solve selected problems and pushing them to self-learning.

The child independently chooses an activity to his liking. However, despite the apparent freedom, all materials are carefully selected in accordance with the developed curriculum. Textbooks are made from natural materials and are as close to reality as possible. They are functional and practical. They are made in a single copy so that the child learns to negotiate with others about what he needs, and can patiently wait for his turn.

It is important that the family in which the child grows up adheres to the same principles as the Montessori system. Being in harmony between learning and everyday life, the child will fully reveal his abilities.

The result of upbringing is a small person who is able to make decisions, able to concentrate on work, with self-service skills.

I’ve designed these for educators who want something quick and short to assign to students while still keeping it fun!

Our Facilities and Security

Our mission is to provide a safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment for every child.

 Creative Curriculum®

With The Creative Curriculum®, children are immersed in learning through purposeful play-based experiences on topics they’re familiar with from their everyday lives. Children find opportunities for rigorous skill development like counting, measurement, and language comprehension while also developing positive relationships, gross-motor skills, and problem solving abilities.

Kindergarten

It is a perfect combination of progressive academic learning and a warm, nurturing, small class environment. Reading and literacy skills are developed through guided reading, phonemic awareness, shared reading, interactive read alouds, creative writing and the integration of other disciplines into the reading world. Math, social studies and science are also incorporated into the children’s day.

Program Highlights

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Children have daily access to our full-sized gymnasium for both structured and unstructured exercise. Using only “kid approved” equipment our students are encouraged to strengthen their gross motor skills through free-play and organized sports. With the recent addition of slides, climbers, and rockers there is something for every child to enjoy!

Children also visit Hudson County Park daily. We climb, swing and run through the playgrounds. Or we enjoy the walking trails, athletic fields and newly restored pond with turtles, ducks and fish to observe. There is so much to explore and discover each day at the park.

AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE

Experts say that teaching preschool aged children sign language can help with vocabulary building and letter retention because there is muscle memory involved in the learning. As a multilingual school we offer sign language so that we have one common form of communication for all children and staff in the center.

MUSIC & MOVEMENT

When children take part in music and movement activities, they are allowed to have fun and be creative. Participating in music and movement helps to develop and refine social skills. Children learn to work together as a team while perfecting their seasonal group performances, and can march to their own beat during daily music exploration.

WOBBLE ROOM

Our soft foam playroom allows preschoolers to play hard, but fall soft while they run, jump, build, climb, roll and play in our new wobble room that includes a ball pit and boat!

DAILY REPORTS

We utilize Tadpoles, a web-based childcare and preschool app (iOS and Android) that gives parents real-time notes and reminders, photos and videos of their children at day care, and school notifications and alerts. Tadpoles is designed to give childcare providers a way to keep track of kids’ needs — and parents peace of mind while keeping them informed throughout the day.

ACCREDITATION

We are licensed by the State of New Jersey Department of Children and Families, which develops standards for childcare centers. We go beyond childcare license standards to ensure our families that their child is receiving the greatest care and education in an environment that is superior to most.

Bayonne NJ

Bayonne on Wikipedia

Bayonne is a city in Hudson County, New Jersey, United States. Bayonne is located on a peninsula between Newark Bay to the west, Kill Van Kull Sound to the south, and New York Bay to the east. According to the 2010 census, the city’s population was &&&&&&&&&&063024.&&&&&063,024 people,. The area in which the city is now located was inhabited by Indians before the arrival of Europeans. The first settlement on the site of the modern city appeared in 1646. It was founded by the Dutchman Jacob J. Roy, who received the right to land on the peninsula from the Dutch West India Company. The place where the settlement was founded was named Constable Hook. Under the British, the settlement was transformed into a trading post, called Bergen Neck. The settlers of the trading post were mainly engaged in catching oysters and shad. Bayonne was founded as a township on April 1, 1861, having been carved out of the township of Bergen. March 10, 1869year Bayonne was given the status of a city. The name of the city was due to its location “on the bays” – Newark and New York. A few years before the Civil War, a railroad was built from Bayonne to Elisabeth. In 1866, coal docks were built at Constable Hook. In the 1870s, an oil refinery was built there, where oil from such companies as Tide Water Oil Company, Texaco, Humble Oil, Gulf Refining Company and others came. The development of industry was followed by mass immigration from central and southern Europe. During World War II, Bayonne produced equipment for warships and supplies and fuel for overseas naval bases. From 1967 to 1999, Bayonne even operated a naval base. Today, the main components of the city’s economy are manufacturing, distribution and container shipping. The city is located in the heart of the Port of New York and New Jersey, east of Newark, the largest city in the state, and west of Brooklyn. To the north, Bayonne borders Jersey City and is connected to Staten Island by the Bayonne Bridge. The total area of the city is 28.702 km², of which 13.669 km² (47.62%) is water surface. The city consists of two districts: Constable Hook and Bergen Point. The 2010 United States Census reported that Bayonne had 63,024 residents, 25,237 households, and 16,051 families. The population density was 4192 people per km². There were 27,799 housing units in Bayonne with an average density of 4,789.4 per km². The racial makeup as of that year was 69.21% (43,618) White, 8.86% (5,584) Black or African American, 0.31% (194) Native American, 7.71% (4,861) – Asian Americans, 0.03% (16) – Hawaiian or Pacific, 10.00% (6303) – from other races, 3.88% (2448) – from two or more races. Hispanic representatives of any race, there were 25.79% (16,251). Non-Hispanic whites made up 56.

Great Daycare Center!

Bright child is a great daycare center! My 18 month old and 4 year old love going to school everyday. They love their teachers and they have learned so much from them. The staff is very patient and you can tell they all love children. The management staff is always pleasant and so helpful. I highly recommend the Bright child at Centennial and Commerce.

Absolutely Wonderful!!!!

The school is very clean and welcoming. There is a lot of involvement with the children. The teachers are absolutley wonderful. It was a very hard change for my youngest son to move schools. They worked with him so much to make it comfortabe for him. When I pick him up sometimes he wants to stay. My kids love this school. I would definitely recommend this school to anyone. Love it.

TRUST and AFFORDABILITY!!!

My daughter has been in daycare all of her little life. She is new to this center and I was skeptical at first. Only because she has only been in one other center since she was 5 months old and she is now 6 years old. Bright Child Learning Center is much more affordable than I have experienced. They are even less expensive than Safekey. A big plus is the fact that I can view my daughter by web cam, when I am at work. Trust and Affordability is a major concern for me. We will be here for the long haul. The center is clean and the staff are great. Thanks Bright Child 🙂

We love Bright Child!

My daughters have been attending Bright Child for over 2 years now and we feel so fortunate to be a part of such a wonderful establishment. The staff are friendly, loving and understanding. The center is always clean and tidy. Everyone is always willing to go the extra step to make sure my children are cared for and loved. My youngest has learned so much in their Pre-K program and enjoys all of the crafts, writing, songs and play that is part of the curriculum. I cannot express how wonderful Bright Child has been for us. As a mother I highly recommend it.

GREAT DAY CARE

OUR ADOPTED SON HAS BEEN ATTENDING BRIGHT CHILD LEARNING CENTER (formerly known as: Sweet Pea Learning Center) SINCE HE CAME HOME, 2 YEARS AGO. YOU CAN TELL SO MUCH THROUGH A CHILD’S EYES & WITHIN THE 1ST FEW WEEKS OF HIM ATTENDING, I INSTANTLY KNEW THAT HE LOVED GOING THERE. I LOVE THAT THEY OFFER A FREE WEBCAM BECAUSE MOST DAY CARES DO NOT. THE DAY CARE ATTENDANTS ALL KNOW US BY NAME, AS DO WE OF THEM. IT IS A VERY FAMILY FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENT AND THEY ARE VERY CARING, LOVING & GENUINELY CONCERNED WITH YOUR CHILDS WELL BEING WHEN IN THEIR CARE. WE ARE NOW EXPECTING OUR 1st CHILD WHO WILL MOST DEFINITELY ALSO BE ATTENDING BRIGHT CHILD LEARING CENTER. I AM A FULL TIME WORKING MOTHER & CAN GENUINELY SAY THAT I FEEL COMFORTABLE EVERY MORNING WHEN I DROP MY SON OFF AT THE DAY CARE, THAT HE IS IN GOOD HANDS.

Not happy with this location at all. Since the moment I signed my daughter up till now 2 or 3weeks after I canceled with them. They said to put in a two week notice of cancellation. I did. And now they are taking $280 out of my account when my daughter hasn’t been there in weeks. I’m not a rich person I need every penny
I earn. But now I have no money to cover my
bills for the first of the month. And who knows how long it will take for them to put the money back into my account.

We absolutely love Bright Child Blue Diamond. My son and daughter have been attending the past 3 years and we have had nothing but positive experiences. I have a very hard time trusting people with my children, but I drop my children off and know they are in good hands. The teachers are just great and my kids love them to pieces. Very happy with Bright Child Blue Diamond.

Children’s center sign | Zarina Ivanter

For the past few months and even years, the sign of my children’s club “Classics” has been a source of headache.

First of all, I hung it five years ago without officially registering it. And that’s why messengers from the HOA regularly appeared in my club demanding to conclude an agreement with them and pay for renting the wall of the house under a sign. Preferably in an envelope. Or they’ll take down my sign to hell.

Twice the board of the HOA fulfilled its threat: its employees cut the wire with wire cutters, removed the sign and left it on the pavement in front of the club.

Why didn’t I register it? I hung it even under Tsar Pea, in a hurry. It was somehow not quite up to the sign. It was about the survival of the club, about how to learn to be some kind of entrepreneur and not go crazy. In addition, we did not want to invest in the design of a sign for the rented premises – it was impossible to exclude that the club would close.

A lot has changed in these five or six years.

It has become an axiom for me that cool design is a very important part of business.

The design of the entrance group, which was acceptable five years ago, now looks indecent. And one more factor – my husband and I bought the Classics premises.

Here’s what it looks like now: a light box with the word “kids club” on top, a banner with laces listing courses on the side (I made it with laces so that you can easily change the information), stickers with the word “Classics” on the window and our phone number.

To be honest, complete “pornography”, for which you still have to pay all sorts of petty bribe-takers.

And so I started working on the project of a new sign…

Almost immediately, I discovered that at the end of 2013 the Moscow Government adopted Decree 902-PP, according to which signs that do not go beyond the first floor and no more than 50 cm in height, must not be registered . So my beloved HOA has been doubly illegally blackmailing me for the last six months.

Good news. It remains to deal with the design.

And I have a difficult relationship with him. I quickly get bored with everything – clothes, colors, hairstyles. I constantly want to change the interior, promotional materials, websites in the clubs. What was liked yesterday is no longer sympathetic today. There are exceptions, but they are rare. I have a difficult task – to make a cool sign that I will like for a long time.

I tried to contact advertising agencies looking for a sign specialist. They honestly answered me that they would draw a sign for me without any problems, but they didn’t have a specialist who could advise the material, the brightness of the backlight and other important details.

I started by trying to figure out what kind of sign I want.

Step 1. The easiest option would be to use our current logo in its original form on the sign. It was drawn by our favorite designer Sergey Nikitin, who draws all the advertising materials for Ugolok and Las Mamas and all the pictures for our notes.

I could have made a sign like this a year ago, the logo was ready. But there was something about him that I didn’t like. I couldn’t figure out what exactly. Naturally, I could not explain this to Sergei, and put this question aside.

Step 2. Over time, I realized that I liked the font in which the word CLASSICS was written, but did not like the strokes around the letters, the font for the words KIDS CLUB and the orange background.

I also wanted to correct the color of the letters.

Digging through my thoughts, the Internet and the apartment, I found this:

This is the logo of the Irson Kudikova children’s center. In it, I liked the colors of the letters and the font of the words FAMILY CLUB.

And also:

This is the book “Professor Nicolas’ Experiments”. In its design, I also liked the colors, the font, and especially all sorts of background squiggles, clocks, stars, molecules, emoticons, etc. draw me a sign, taking into account my sympathies and the materials found.

The first option was not very successful – it seems that I did not explain what I wanted very well.

I asked to remove the strokes, change the color of the letters and the spelling of the words KIDS CLUB.

It turned out much better.

Step 3. I liked it. However, I understood that the work was not finished.

I needed someone to tell me if a sign of this size would look good with this background, if it needed a frame, if it needed a stroke, what material to use, what lamps were inside, etc.

I called companies that make signs, and they asked me what material I want, what kind of base, what kind of film, etc.

It was clear to me that everything was not going quite right. I literally explain in detail what needs to be done. But at the same time, I am not a specialist in signage.

It happens that you come to the hairdresser, and there the novice hairdresser asks you every minute how long the hair should be for me to make the hair behind the ears, above the forehead, on the back of the head, on the crown. I don’t know, I’m not a hairdresser. And a high-class stylist will ask for general wishes and offer something interesting himself.

And among my friends there was a cool architect and designer Taras. I sent him photos of the facade and my new sign to get his opinion.

Received harsh criticism and good suggestions. What was needed.

First of all, he went over the idea of a banner in general. He said that in Moscow, banner advertising on a building that plans to last longer than three months is bad manners.

Secondly, the background ripples on the old sign and the small drawings on the new sign make it difficult to read. As Taras wrote to me, all salons, shops and clubs abroad have long come to the conclusion that any artistic creativity instead of an even and contrasting background is unacceptable. And they do everything to make the information read well.

In my opinion, Taras was thrown out of balance by my smileys-molecules. He wrote that in a sign, as in make-up, either lips or eyes should be bright. Or a bright background and a calm color of letters. Or a calm background and bright letters. “And to make bright both that, and another are inclined only in Romania”. Based on this principle, the sign I invented is not just Romanian, but generally terrible. I have all multi-colored letters, and a background with color drawings.

Thirdly, the sign must have a color match with the elements of the building – for example, it must match the tone of the door and frames. In my version, there was no such connection.

Also, the sign should occupy the entire width of the facade, and not just part of it, as we have now.

Then Taras argues as follows:

“The target audience is parents who choose a quality and prestigious children’s club for their child.

Do they expect to see elements of childlike innocence on the sign? Rather, they are interested in this or that degree of solidity, and they expect to see a toy inside. Will a vegetable stand level sign inspire confidence? Or, based on the principle “All the best for the children,” are they waiting for a sign that will look like the signs of the establishments they are used to visiting (good shops, beauty salons, fitness clubs)?

Taras offered to focus on the following examples:

Here is one of the signs offered for our club:

The sign occupies the entire width of the facade and matches the color of the door and frames.

The letters in the word CLASSICS are raised, cut from acrylic sheet.

And the next version uses a frame-colored background and bright letters. I really liked it, but colleagues, friends and acquaintances criticized this option – too gloomy.

We continue to think and work on our input group, and by September we will definitely show what happened.

Which version of the signboard for the children’s club seems more correct to you – “toy” or “solid”?

Have you registered your sign and have you faced extortion due to not registering?

Please tell us about it in the comments – very interesting.

Ilyinskaya Hospital – a modern outpatient hospital center :: The Spanish Inquisition in New York.

Sinister surgeon Lewis Sayre.

Most of all the “invention” of the doctor

Lewis
Seira was like a medieval rack – and the results, in general, were
appropriate. Scoliosis was a serious problem for young American women of that
time. Sayre
mercilessly stretched the spines of girls suspended from his tripod.

The history of American medicine has been
many strange, comical, and sometimes sinister figures. Before Victor
Frankenstein, invented by Mary Shelley, none of them held out – perhaps to
happiness for the patients – but also what these doctors were doing in their offices,
enough for more than one horror movie.

This is not about any
charlatans who were educated at the courses of rural veterinarians, and about
recognized experts, sometimes even the luminaries of medicine of their time. Name
Lewis Sayre,
for example, immediately after his death, it was included in one of the volumes of the Encyclopedia
Contemporary Biographies of Eminent and Progressive Men in the State of New York” and
occupies a worthy place in the “History of Surgery in the United States 1775 – 1900
gg. ” Articles in special journals and pages in textbooks are dedicated to him.
medical colleges.

Indeed, Dr. Sayre did
the first successful surgery in the United States to treat
ankylosis of the hip joint, this happened in 1854. Operation
consisted in the removal of the head of the femur – caputfemur. The patient survived and even after some
time to start walking! Thus, Sayre inscribed his name in the Hall of Fame of the American
surgery, received recognition and fame in Europe and the Order of the Vase from the Swedish
king. In 1860-1866. Sayre was the Chief Medical Officer of New York and achieved
in this field of well-known successes: in particular, stopped the distribution
cholera epidemic, introducing a quarantine regime in the city port, where hundreds of
ships from the Old World (it should be noted that in other US ports there are no quarantines
introduced another twenty years).

However, in addition to all these wonderful
Sayre developed and implemented his own method of correcting
spinal deformities. It is this very method that makes it possible to speak of
founder of American orthopedic surgery as one of the “sinister
doctors of America.

Famous black and white photograph
1880, in which Lewis Sayre
demonstrates his method of treating scoliosis on a young girl, she could
serve as an illustration for the section of the history textbook on torture
Spanish Inquisition. A respectable gentleman in a dark coat stands at
metal tripod, to the top of which is attached a thrown
through the belt block. This belt is held by hands raised above the head.
(perhaps they are tied to a belt) topless girl. On the head of
the patient’s creepy-looking construction that seems to fix her
head in a certain position.

Doctor’s most “invention”
Seira was like a medieval rack – and the results, in general, were
appropriate. Scoliosis was a serious problem for young American women of that
time, especially representatives of wealthy segments of the population. Sayre
mercilessly stretched the spines of girls suspended from his tripod – with
while insisting that they take off all their clothes (except skirts, of course –
but for the Puritan mores of the 19th century
and that was too much). His method helped someone, but in many patients the condition
only got worse.

Things were even worse with the developed
Seyrom method of surgical treatment of ankylosis of the hip joint. How
statistics show that in the first decades after its introduction into
medical practice, about half of the patients died after surgery, and only
a small proportion of survivors regained joint mobility. Less
“progressive” doctors began to avoid using the Sayre method, preferring
non-surgical treatments. And some surgeons – Sayre’s contemporaries –
dared to criticize him for treating Pott’s disease (tuberculous
spondylitis affecting the spine) with the help of “Paris plaster” – that is,
simply put, he chained the patients in plaster bandages (recall, for the first time
the plaster cast in its modern form was used by the great Russian surgeon N. I.
Pirogov on the eve of the Crimean War). This “treatment” relieved the pain, but, of course,
could not cope with the cause of the disease. However, the plaster bandage received
widespread in American clinics, where it was known under the name
Sayre’s jacket.

Despite Sayre’s tendency to
unconventional and frankly strange methods of treatment, it cannot be denied that
“sinister doctor” sometimes succeeded where classical medicine
threw up her hands in helplessness. For example, there is a case when Seira was invited
examine a five-year-old boy who suffered from paralysis. In addition to paralysis
the child’s legs were severely twisted and he could not walk. Sayre was called to him
precisely because of the crooked legs – but it turned out that the “sinister doctor” cured
small patient from paralysis. After examining the patient, Sayre decided that the main
the problem is phimosis – the foreskin of the child was strongly squeezing the head
his penis, which caused severe pain. Telling parents that this is
source of their son’s “physical and nervous exhaustion,” Sayre quickly made
he was circumcised, and in a few days the boy began to walk! This story was
detailed in the American journal Transactions
of the American Medical Association at the end
XIX century. It is worth adding that phimosis is still quite often treated
circumcision, that’s just a direct link between this disease and muscle paralysis
failed to install.

Another case
proving that Lewis Sayre as a diagnostician was not inferior to the hero of the series, the doctor
House, took place in New York in 1869. He was approached by a young woman,
suffering from progressive myopathy: the muscles of both forearms she had
so atrophied that she could not bend and unbend her arms. On
for several years she was examined by the best doctors in New York, Philadelphia and
Boston – but no one has been able to establish the cause of the disease. To Sayre she
turned when the disease had gone so far that the hopes for recovery were almost
did not have.

Dr. Sayre went beyond
examination of the patient, but collected all the information about her lifestyle – including
eating habits and pastimes. He soon found out that the patient was feeding
addiction to cosmetics containing a fair amount of lead-based dyes.
During the next examination, Sayre strictly forbade the girl to use
this cosmetics – and to her great surprise, the disease stopped progressing.
It was not possible to cure the girl – the poisoning had gone too far – but Sayre
developed a system of exercises for her that allowed her to be more active
life. On this, however, he did not calm down and launched a stormy activity for
detection of lead in widely used cosmetics of the time.
Under his pressure, the New York City Board of Health banned the sale of
such cosmetics that saved many women’s lives.

During his lifetime, Sayre
several times they tried to accuse them of inappropriate and unethical actions, however
the court each time sided with the doctor. One day the mother of six-year-old Margaret
Welsh, who was operated on by Sayre for ankylosis of the hip joint,
stated that the doctor had inflicted horrific wounds on her child. In an accusation prepared
District Attorney, said that “the operation was done so carelessly and
ineptly that the plaintiff’s joint was punctured, causing synovial fluid to leak”
– and this, according to the prosecutor, made Margaret lame for life and even,
may have caused the risk of leg amputation.

Five witnesses – all
they were Sayre’s assistants and students – showed what Sayre did
half-inch incision on Margaret’s left buttock, near the greater trochanter of the femur
bones – and that it was not synovial fluid, but pus “gushed from the abscess in a stream.”
Margaery’s mother was not convinced by this – she publicly stated that she would prefer
to die rather than go under the knife of a sadist like Sayre—and perhaps
she would have been able to convince the jury of the doctor’s guilt. But Sayre’s lawyer called
witness the six-year-old patient herself – and Margaret Welsh herself and
entered the courtroom without crutches. The court ruled in favor of the slandered
surgeon.

Lewis Sayre lived a long and
eventful life. He died in 1900, on the threshold of a new century, leaving
after a daughter Mary-Hall and three sons. All the sons of the doctor went after him
feet and became famous orthopedists. One of them became the founder of the American
orthopedic association, the second – its secretary-treasurer, and the third,
Reginald as its eighteenth president. Is it any wonder that
the orthopedic association in every possible way extolled the merits of Sayre-father, closing
eyes on the shadowy side of his activities, thanks to which Lewis Sayre remained in
history of American medicine by an outstanding talented surgeon, not a sinister
doctor, whose methods often caused contemporaries to be dumbfounded?
