Look up any article about haunted locations in Las Vegas, and you are sure to come across the story of the Little Choo Choo Daycare. The now defunct daycare, the story goes, was the site of two unfortunate deaths. A little boy, who presumably attended the daycare, was accidentally run over in the front yard by the company’s toy train. The “toy train” was actually a gas-powered multisectional train, the type used to drive kids around malls and fairs. The second death occurred when either a teacher or aide took her own life while on the job.

The location, the original building has since been torn down, is said to be haunted by the apparition of a little boy digging a hole with his toy shovel. He appears both during the day and at night. The spirit of a black woman can also be seen wandering about the area, it is presumably the spirit of the woman that committed suicide, but could be another spirit altogether.

Researching the story uncovered a problem — there is absolutely no outside documentation that these deaths ever happened. It seems if a suicide occurred on the grounds of a daycare, and especially if a child died accidentally while at the same daycare, one or both of these tragedies would have made the news. Other suicides in and around schools have been reported on, so why not this one?

A few teachers have taken their own lives right here in the Las Vegas area. A science teacher, Fifty-eight year old Michael Roberts, fatally shot himself in the courtyard of Western High School back in 2010.

In 2005, a Green Valley High School history teacher, thirty-four year old Howard Wade Bycroft, attempted suicide, also while at school, by repeatedly stabbing himself in the abdomen. He was alone in his classroom, he was rumored to be living out of the room at the time, when he inflicted the wounds. Bycroft was found by another teacher and taken to the hospital; he survived the attempt. More recently, a fourteen year old girl jumped to her death at Coronado High School in May, 2015.

The second issue with the story is the location. Where exactly was the Little Choo Choo Daycare? A simply Google search will tell you it was at 3335 Wynn Road, just south of Desert Inn. The building there dates back to 1964 and has changed hands a good number of times since then. Ryan Mechanical has been there since 1996. This is an industrial area and a very unlikely spot to open a daycare, and, furthermore, where would the ghostly little boy be digging with his shovel there? In the paved parking lot?

However, according to locals that remember Little Choo Choo, it was actually located in the residential area behind Hyde Park Middle School, a short drive away. This area is much more likely to have had a daycare, and, at least at night, has an eerie feel to it. At the south end of the street a new building now stands, in fitting with the story of the original having been deconstructed. The school field borders the back fences of the houses, it is easy to believe that a ghostly boy still wanders the dimly lit fence-line, shovel in hand. It is unclear how the Wynn Road location became associated with the daycare, but the Hyde Park area seems the more probable spot.

Ultimately, the story of the ill-fated daycare does have some truth to it, but the details are a bit sketchy when put under the microscope. Regardless of how much can be verified, the fact remains that the Little Choo Choo Daycare will remain a Las Vegas legend for years to come.

From this, probably, there is a decline in morals in the United States, where it is no longer possible to object to your teenage child so as not to get him in the eye. In family matters, I am a conservative person. At home, everything is under my heel, I forced everyone to reckon with me. But I do my best for them.

– Let’s continue the theme of the East. You have lived in Baku for several years. Why did you like Azerbaijan, and not some other republic?

– He attracted me because they loved me there. And we always love those who love us. It was back in Soviet times, when every artist was attached to a concert organization. I was invited to work from Azconcert. From him I went to an international competition. And she did not disappoint – she brought the Grand Prix to Baku. Then for a novice artist it was very important – I was immediately allowed to perform with a solo program. Raymond Pauls took part in the first 15 concerts. He was very surprised that every evening huge bouquets of flowers and baskets of fruits and oriental sweets were brought to my dressing room. I remember Raymonda asked: “Here you have worked all your life in the Riga Philharmonic. Have you ever given artists like this?” He answered with a sigh, “Never!” I have the best memories of Baku life. I am very grateful to the people of Baku who gave me shelter and did everything possible and impossible for me.

– You are a successful business woman – you own a cosmetic company “Lyma-Lux”. But your colleague Alla Pugacheva complains that no matter what she does: she produces shoes, chips or perfumes, buys plants and factories, every time she, a gullible artist, is robbed and bankrupt by cunning financiers. Tell me, are you a tough hostess? Are you easily deceived?

– In business, I don’t allow myself to be robbed. In this we have a big difference with Alla. Here I have a lot of trees and flowers on the site. Shrubs from Germany, Japanese pine… They all take root, no matter what exotic countries I bring them from. What is the reason? Don’t know. Plants, people, and business are drawn to me. – What are you doing. I have been sitting on various juries for twenty years. It’s business as usual. I remember how I got on the jury for the first time – at the pop song contest “Yalta-90”. Then the Ministry of Culture of the USSR still had a strong influence, and officials from there sat on the jury. I constantly incited everyone: “Look how good that boy is, and how loud this one is.” I was not the chairman, but the prize solitaire turned out the way I wanted, and the third place was taken by a young man from Kurgan, Max Fadeev, now a well-known composer and producer. He was slender and handsome then, but now he is simply handsome. So these people from the jury later cried to me that the authorities scolded them very much for Max. And they justified themselves: “We fell under the influence of Laima.” Since then, it doesn’t matter whether I’m the chairman or not, everyone is under my influence.

– Did you feel responsible for the fate of beginners?

– Of course. When you distribute puppies to new owners, and I have a whole family of American bulldogs, you understand that you are responsible for their fate. That’s about the same feelings I had when I watched the performance of the contestants. Although it is clear that any creative competition is an absolutely subjective thing. We do not decide their fate, but give only a small chance.

What is important for beginners? It seems that they have talent, and charisma, and they know how to hold on to the stage, and there is something to wear, but many lack sincerity. And other good guys lose because of the wrong repertoire, with which they cannot show their best sides. And the last criterion is a sense of perspective. What is the point of encouraging rich idlers who will then hang their laureate diploma on the wall and will never earn their living by singing.

– How do you feel about the fact that since July 1 all casinos in Russia have been closed? Now artists probably have fewer opportunities to perform in front of rich people?

– What are you talking about, we perform at their house. They pay more for it. In Latvia, casinos in our country operate as before. If you want to play, if you don’t want to, don’t play. It all depends on willpower, financial capabilities and desire. I myself go to casinos only in Las Vegas or Atlantic City. Gambling establishments in other places, especially in Russia, do not interest me. For some reason I think that in Las Vegas I have a chance to win, but not here.

What is NeighborSchools?

Hey there, nice to meet you 👋 We’re a new-ish startup that helps new-ish parents find daycare.

We know how hard finding good child care can be – especially for first-time parents. But really good care is what gives you the peace of mind to go back to work and feel confident that your child is getting the stimulation, socialization, and support they need to learn and grow.

So we created NeighborSchools to make this piece of parenthood a whole lot easier. We say “easier” because, let’s be honest, it’s still a big thing to figure out, but working together we can help you find some good options, understand the whole process, and choose a program you’ll feel really good about.

How’s it work?

Most first-time parents don’t know exactly what they’re looking for, so we created a simple survey that will ask you questions about your lifestyle, your daily routines, and your preferences for child care. We’ll then share 3 personalized recommendations that we think might be a good fit. We’ll also give you a timeline that maps out when we would suggest you start touring programs, choose a daycare, and pay a deposit to secure a spot. Your timeline is based on when you want to start care – so you set the pace, and you decide when you’ve found the right match.

Is there a cost?

Nope. Our daycare recommendation service is free for parents. The other half of our business is helping these small-scale daycares with software and services that handle all their administrative tasks, like online contracting, payment processing, and licensing requirements. Before NeighborSchools, services like these were only designed for large corporate child care centers, and part of our mission is to level the playing field for small, independent child care programs. That’s why we picked the name NeighborSchools – we’re all about making child care more personal, more human, and more equitable for the incredible individuals who do this work and care for our children.

How do I know if I’m ready to take the survey?

Generally, if you’re here, you’re ready. The survey lets us give you 3 recommendations to consider, but it’ll also help you better understand what factors to consider, and what questions to be asking right now. It’s simple things like where you live, your child’s date of birth, when you want to start care, and if you have any preferences around program philosophy or language of instruction. If you’re planning 6+ months ahead, it’s a great way to get started, and if you’re hoping to start daycare in the next 2-4 months, it’s definitely time to get started. How do I know if a daycare has openings?

Each program has a limited number of spots for each age range, so we need to know your schedule and child’s age before we can share availability. The survey covers these basics, as well as factors like drop-off and pick-up times to make sure that recommended programs fit your daily routine. Once we know your child’s age and schedule we can share rates and costs as well.

The United States believes that China, with its position on Ukraine, puts itself in an awkward position

China’s stance on the Russian-Ukrainian conflict puts it in an “embarrassing” position internationally, and any arms support for Russia would come at a “real cost,” US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said.

Sullivan stressed in three US television interviews on Sunday that the Biden administration has no evidence that China is providing “lethal support” to Russia in an attempt to warn Beijing of the risks.

“When China talks rhetorically about Ukraine, they tie the knot because they know that if Ukraine goes all-in with Russia in this conflict, it will alienate a significant number of countries with which they work hard to maintain good relations. Sullivan said on CNN’s State of the Union.

Tensions between the world’s two leading economies escalate after Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Chinese diplomat Wang Yi met in Germany on Feb. 18. Blinken later said that the US had evidence that China was considering helping Russia with arms, but Beijing denied the claim. The US has not provided public evidence of its claims.

President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jingping do not yet have scheduled phone calls, “although I expect the two leaders to speak at some point in the not so distant future,” Sullivan said on NBC’s Meet the Press .

As the Russian-Ukraine conflict is now in its second year, Kyiv still enjoys strong support from a large international coalition, Sullivan said, and China does not lose sight of this fact.

“This creates a real challenge for Beijing,” he told CNN. “And Beijing will have to make its own decisions about how to act, whether it will provide military assistance. But if he goes down this path, it will cost China dearly.”

China on Friday called for a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, but the 12-point proposal did not receive much international support. Some of the measures outlined, if implemented, will benefit Russia.

US officials have previously criticized China for trying to portray itself as a neutral party to the conflict while giving Moscow diplomatic, economic and propaganda support, as the US claims.

Last week, China refrained from passing a UN resolution calling for an end to the conflict. The resolution was adopted by 141 votes in favour, 7 against, with 32 abstentions. The UN resolution contained a demand for the withdrawal of Russian troops from the territory of Ukraine.

China was “one of a number of countries that were just trying to stand by,” Sullivan said.

Origins, education, early career
Jake Sullivan (full name – Jacob Jeremiah Sullivan; Jacob Jeremiah Sullivan) was born November 28, 1976 in Burlington, Vermont. He spent his childhood and youth in Minneapolis (Minnesota).
Graduated from Yale University in 1998 with a bachelor’s degree in political science. In 1998-2000, he studied International Relations at the Master’s Degree at Oxford University. He continued his studies at the Yale Law School, where he received his Juris Doctor degree in 2003. During his studies, he worked on the editorial boards of the university publications Oxford International Review, Yale Law Journal and Yale Daily News. He was briefly an associate at the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization, a clerk in the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and the US Supreme Court, and later was an attorney with the law firm Faegre & Benson and a visiting lecturer in law at Saint Thomas University (Minnesota).
Political career
In 2006, Sullivan joined the campaign staff of Democratic candidate Amy Klobuchar, who ran for Senator from Minnesota, becoming her legal and political adviser. In 2008, he collaborated with the team of Hillary Clinton, who was then one of the contenders for the Democratic nomination in the presidential election, advised her on the conduct of the debate. After she lost the primaries to Barack Obama, he became an adviser to his campaign headquarters.
Following his election victory and Hillary Clinton’s confirmation as US Secretary of State, Sullivan took over as her Deputy Chief of Staff. In 2011-2013 he headed the State Department’s policy planning division. In 2013-2014 was National Security Adviser to Vice President Joseph Biden. All these years, he was directly involved in the development of foreign policy decisions of the Obama administration, including in relation to Libya, Syria and Myanmar, was among those who negotiated with Iran before the conclusion of the agreement on the Iranian nuclear program (signed in 2015). After leaving the civil service, he was a freelance lecturer at Yale Law School.
In 2015, Sullivan joined the campaign of Hillary Clinton, who fought for the presidency in the 2016 elections. He advised her on foreign policy issues. Her loss to Donald Trump, in his own words, he experienced as a personal humiliation. Since 2017, he has worked at Macro Advisory Partners, which advises large corporations on economics and geopolitics. He is also a visiting senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment.
During the 2020 Democratic presidential campaign, Joseph Biden accompanied him on most of his trips around the country, advising him on economic issues. On November 23, 2020, Biden named Jake Sullivan as National Security Adviser in his forthcoming administration.

15 Fun Ways to Build Language & Literacy Skills in Young Learners

What makes a successful reader? The journey starts in early childhood classrooms, where young children are laying a foundation for their lifelong language and literacy skills. Children who hear more words and are exposed to more language games and activities will be better prepared for reading success–and today’s post gives teachers a bevy of bright ideas for building crucial early literacy skills.

 

Excerpted and adapted from Talk to Me, Baby! by Betty Bardige, these 15 fun and easy games and activities will help you spark a love of words and books in all your young learners.

 

 

Tell a book by its cover

 

Try this at your next storytime session: Before you even open the book, do a mini show-and-tell session with the cover. Point out the title, author, and illustrator, and have the child read and repeat the words after you. If the book is part of a beloved series, see if children can recognize the author, illustrator, or main character of the book just by studying the cover. You might also ask young learners to be “cover detectives,” looking for clues that indicate what type of book it is: fiction, nonfiction, humor, fairy tale, etc. If it’s fiction, see if children can guess what the story is about or where it takes place.

 

 

Put on a play

 

Engage children in storytelling by helping them reimaging a favorite book as a play or puppet show.

It doesn’t have to be a huge production–you can keep the props, costumes, and scenery simple, and minimize rehearsal time by narrating the story yourself and cueing the characters when it’s their turn to speak. Involve children in pre-show activities that boost literacy skills: making tickets, putting together programs, and creating signs for use in the show (“The Forest,” “Gingerbread House,” “Applause, Please,” “The End”).

 

 

Share wordplay jokes and riddles

 

Jokes that play with words are a great way to increase young learners’ facility with language. Tell your students jokes throughout the day like “What do you do if your puppy can’t come into the store with you? Leave him in the barking lot.” (Don’t worry if they’re corny–kids are a forgiving and enthusiastic audience!) Build up your joke collection by searching joke sites online and checking out joke and riddle books from the library. For an extra literacy boost, you can help kids make books of their own favorite jokes, complete with illustrations.

Decode directions together

 

Are you reading a recipe for a class cooking session, opening a new game for the first time, or assembling a new classroom toy? Get kids involved in decoding and following the directions. See if students can point out letters and words they know on the recipe or instruction sheet. They can help you collect all the parts or ingredients, arrange them in order, and keep track of each step of the process. Even if they can’t read yet, they might be able to recognize the pictures and help figure out the directions.

 

 

Make “me” books

 

Have your students make illustrated “me” books that share basic information and fun facts about themselves. They can include names, family members, favorite color, favorite book, hobbies, important milestones like when they learned to ride a bike or tie their shoes, and odd bits of information like how many light switches are in their house or apartment. If they’re practicing letter-writing skills, they can caption the pages.

 

 

Compare name lengths

 

Show children how to clap out the syllables in their names and those of their friends, pets, and family members (assign one clap to each syllable). Ask students to listen closely and answer questions: Whose names have only one clap? Two? Three? Does anyone’s have four or more? Then write the names on graph paper–one letter to each square–to illustrate how many letters are in each name. Children might be interested to learn that a one-clap name like Blake might have the same number of letters as a three-clap name like Anara.

 

 

Pay attention to letters in the environment

 

Remind your young learners that there are letters and words all around us, and point them out whenever you see them. Encourage children to look for letters everywhere: on product labels in the classroom, on pamphlets and signs on field trips, on other children’s sweatshirts on the playground. You might challenge your students to find all the letters in their name or the letters of the alphabet, one at a time.

 

 

Find words within words

 

Show young learners how small words can sometimes “hide” in bigger words (the word can hiding in candy, the word pot hiding in potato). Make a game of it–encourage students to find other examples in books, newspapers, signs, advertisements, and other print media.

 

 

Make word and sentence puzzles

 

This is a great way to make a language game from a text familiar to the children (the book Goodnight, Moon, for example). Write some words, phrases, or sentences from a well-known book or song on index cards. Then cut each card like a puzzle, splitting the words between syllables or between onset and rime (for example: Good | night, moon. Goodnight light and the r | ed balloon. ) Have children match up the two parts of the text.

 

 

Give books as special gifts

 

You can communicate the value of books by giving them as gifts to the children in your life and encouraging them to give their own favorites to their friends. Make your literary gift extra-special by including a personal note for the child–tell them why the book is special to you or why you chose that book for the child. You might even include a recording of yourself reading the story.

 

 

Plan an imaginary trip

 

Tap into your students’ sense of adventure by planning an imaginary trip together. Decide with your class where you’d like to go, and then involve students in the planning process in ways that expand their language skills. Collect travel or tourist brochures, look up information online and read it together, use maps to figure out how to get there, write an itinerary, and make lists of items they would need to pack.

 

 

Make a board game

 

Start by asking children to pick a theme: maybe it’s a trip to an amusement park, an adventure in an enchanted forest, a submarine expedition, or a time machine back to the time of the dinosaurs. Sketch out a path and divide it into squares. Then your students can illustrate the board, add labels to the squares, and make a deck of index cards with directions (“Take a ride on the roller coaster,” “You got lost in the forest. Miss one turn.”) You can also involve them in creating an instruction sheet that describes how to play the game.

 

 

Go on a scavenger hunt

 

This is a fun idea to try on a field trip. Give each child or team a list of things to find and check off: for example, a specific type of animal, a red car, a square inside a rectangle, something purple, and something that holds water. Review the list before your trip to make sure each child or team can read/understand all the items. (If your students aren’t reading yet, you can use picture or color clues to help them out.) You can also have a “letter scavenger hunt” right in your classroom–give each child a list of letters to find on your bulletin boards, product labels, and school supplies.

 

 

Set aside special times for reading and conversation

 

Throughout the day, actively work in small celebrations of language and literacy: read stories, play word games, establish sustained silent reading times, and start conversations at the snack table. Parents play a key role in reinforcing the skills you teach at school, too. Encourage them to read to children at bedtime, talk to them at the dinner table, and take 15 minutes in the evening for a family read-aloud, sing-along, or silent reading time.

14 activities for building literacy at home

Literacy is more than just reading.

Developing literacy, especially in young children, also means helping a child learn to engage with the world: How to ask questions, form knowledge, imagine the (im)possible, and reflect on their experiences.

With many young children spending more time at home due to COVID-19, Penn GSE Reading/Writing/Literacy doctoral student Daris McInnis offers these 14 activities that will help parents build these literacy skills with their children and have fun in the process.

These activities are all meant to be personalized to work with what you have at home or around your neighborhood.

Two ideas are at the heart of every activity.

The first is inquiry. One of the best ways to teach children is to ask a child questions, McInnis says, and to encourage a child to ask questions when they are curious or want to explore more.

The second is respect. It’s important we treat kids as the cosmopolitan intellectuals that they are, as Penn GSE’s Gerald Campano and Columbia professor Maria Paula Ghiso remind us. When we treat their ideas and questions with respect and engage them in meaningful dialogue, children will want to explore more.

Create a schedule

 One of the first things kids see when they walk into a classroom is a schedule with pictures of what they will do for the day. Whether you are providing care for your child every day or only occasionally, a schedule can help orient both you and your child.

You can ask your child to draw pictures for each activity, which gives them some ownership over the schedule. 

Remember, you can be flexible after you write in those times. Some activities will be shorter, some will take longer. That’s fine.

Chart the weather

 Start the day by stepping outside and asking: what does it feel like and what does it look like?

Creating a meteorology chart to track the temperature and the forecast allows children to use their knowledge, senses, and curiosity to explore the weather and its effects.

Invite your child to draw the day’s forecast or weather. Or if this is an everyday activity, they could create a series of drawings representing different forecasts to swap in and out of your chart.

For slightly older children, around age 5 and 6, you can ask ‘why’ questions, like: why do you think it’s hot today? You can start to explain bigger concepts like the relationship between the sun and the earth and how seasons work, depending on your geography. 

Tune up fine motor skills

 Young kids love sorting things. With your child’s help, you can create a sorting activity that will help them notice similarities and differences and also develop their fine motor skills.

Collect objects from around your home of different size or shape, like a grain of rice, a bead, or a remote control. Ask your child to sort the objects into different piles. You are introducing the math concept of categorization and opening the door for powerful inquiry.

Ask the child why they put the grain of rice into this pile instead of that pile. Are they organizing by size, shape, color, or something else? 

While they are thinking, you’ll be helping your child build their dexterity while they practice gripping with their thumb, index, and middle finger – this is important for pencil grip and writing activities in the future. 

If a child is physically unable to sort the items without assistance, you can move the objects for them and still ask the rationale behind their choices.

Scavenger hunt!

 You don’t have to buy any new stuff to use your home as a play space.

When you create your scavenger hunt, you can show your child what a list is and why we would use one. You can ask them to find something that is a circle or a triangle. Find a letter S. Find a clock. Find something with the color green. The possibilities are limitless.

For slightly older kids, you can let your child do the hunt themselves and give them a time limit. Be sure to use a timer they can see, to keep them on task.

This is a way to encourage your child to notice details in their everyday environment and also build their vocabulary. For example, your child might identify an iron as a triangle. This is a chance to explain what an iron is and why someone would use it. 

Bonus idea: Create some cutouts of letters and hide them around your home.

Plant a seed

You can create a really nice gardening activity with materials you have around the home, like reusing an egg carton, paper cups, or an old two-liter bottle.

You can show a child how to plant a seed. You can tell them about watering and sunlight needs. Have them start a plant journal where they can draw what they notice about the plant bed every day. This can open a conversation about the life cycle of the plant.

There’s even a behavior element to this lesson. How do we use our bodies around the plant? For instance, it’s probably not a good idea to play with or throw an object near the plant, because we might knock it over and hurt it.

Read aloud

 Kids are innately brilliant, and books are a way to spark a child’s imagination and develop early literacy skills. As you are reading the book, make sure the child can see the pictures. Ask them what they notice, in both the narrative and the pictures, especially about details like characters’ facial expressions.

When you finish the story, encourage them to respond to the text. Maybe that’s drawing a picture of their favorite part. Or asking them to explain why they like or dislike a particular character in the story. You are providing opportunities for your child to explore their own ideas, extract information, form opinions, and infer.

Don’t forget, many libraries have created touchless pickup or have digital borrowing options to help families through COVID.

Readers’ theater

 Building on a read aloud, have your child act out a favorite story, or act it out with them. For slightly older children, encourage them to make a costume from items around your home. 

You are testing their comprehension, but it’s also super cute. If you’re able to, record their production on a mobile device, and let them see themselves as a writer, actor, and director.

Remember: Cardboard boxes make great set pieces, like vehicles or clubhouses. 

Make some goo

Find a recipe online to make your own version of Gak or Play-Doh. It might be a good idea to try this activity on your own first. When you do get to the lab together (probably the kitchen area), start by going over the safety rules, and orient them to the materials and the ingredients.

Once your Gak or Play-Doh is ready, create letters and numbers on a piece of cardboard or tin. Have your child shape the material into the letters. This helps kids recognize their name, which they will need to do at day care or pre-school.

Added bonus: Because it can take 30 minutes to an hour just to make the material, this can be good for a rainy day spent inside. 

Collage time

Collages are a great way to introduce kids to creating art. They can be figurative or abstract, and they can feature letters, shapes, colors, story characters, or any other theme you and your child might want to try. Found objects like bottle caps, pipe cleaners, and feathers make great additions — but think twice before opening glitter.

Don’t forget to ask your child to sign their piece, since they are, in fact, the artist. Then display it. Running out of gallery space? Try a memory board, which will let you slide pieces in and out. Save special pieces in a scrap book or an accordion file, which makes a meaningful gift when your child reaches a milestone like graduating high school. 

When we treat their ideas and questions with respect and engage them in meaningful dialogue, children will want to explore more.

Take a virtual tour

 Because of the pandemic, many museums and zoos around the world have expanded their virtual offerings.

Virtual tours are fun activities themselves, but they also offer another chance to invite your child to do some critical thinking. Say you tour the Smithsonian’s Air & Space Museum. You might learn that in our solar system, Mercury is the closest planet to the sun, but Venus is the hottest. Ask your child: why do they think this the case? You can explore comets or share dialogue about how gravity might work on other planets.

Inquiry is a great way to keep your child interested and engaged in learning, based on what they already know and things they care about, McInnis says. The discussion and exchange you have about what they learned, or what they liked, or what they want to know more about, can help you plan your next virtual tour.

Give them an apron

 You can do two things at once: Engage your kids AND keep them busy while you prepare a meal.

If your family has a particularly cherished recipe you can tell you child how it’s been passed down from generation to generation. Or you can describe the part of the world where this meal originated. You can also write out a recipe with your child, having them add words or drawings as they go. Eventually you could design and publish a family cookbook with your child as a significant contributor.

You can give children basic, age appropriate tasks, like rinsing food, or tearing up herbs or lettuce. It’s also a good opportunity to talk about the importance of following steps when preparing meals and teaching them about food safety. 

One more hack: The slow cooker is your friend. Take turns with your child measuring ingredients and filling the pot. You can start dinner early in the day, avoid using a stove, and still enjoy a nice hot meal.    

Take a stroll

Nature or community walks are a great way to get out your home and into your community space. It’s also an opportunity for you to talk about nature, perhaps naming some trees you see, birds overhead, or flowers in your window box. 

If there isn’t much green around your community, there is an opportunity to talk about environmental print. Stop signs are octagons and other street signs have different shapes; use the world around you to engage in discussions around shapes, colors, and letters we see every day.  

Introduce an experiment

 People often assume science lessons are for older children. But thanks to their natural curiosity, younger children are great scientists too.

Try a game of sink or float for your first experiment. Create a chart, help the child write or draw objects, and then have them predict if the objects will sink or float in a bowl of water.

Kids will often pause if you ask about an egg, because of the shape. Or you can ask about a piece of tinfoil folded like the hull of a boat versus a ball of aluminum foil. This can lead to a conversation about buoyancy and water displacement.

For the next experiment, the child can find objects to test. Note: Your smartphone will sink. Don’t test that. 

Freeze dance!

Dance parties are fun, and as your kids learn songs, they can help you write out the lyrics or names of songs in a playlist. Or open the recycle bin to find materials to make your own drums and maracas, and make the music yourselves.

Jam out to your favorite tunes or dance while playing your homemade instruments — and when you pause the music, it’s time to freeze your body!

And remember, if you and/or your child are working virtually for an extended period of time, dance parties are a fun, simple way to take a break.

9000 LLC: basic principles and changes”

On March 10, 2022, a seminar was held for the deputy directors of LLC on the topic “Updated GEF IEO and GEF LLC: basic principles and changes”. During the seminar, its participants got acquainted with the main features of the updated standards, in the course of practical work they found out and discussed the main changes in the requirements for personal, meta-subject and subject results, identified priority tasks for the implementation of the updated GEF in grades 1 and 5.

08/26/2022 MMS methodologists Stepanova E.Yu. and Milovidova L.A. became participants in the educational event “Video bridge “Time for functionally literate people”, presenting speeches on the issue “Semantic reading as the main element in the formation of functional literacy: the experience of organizing a regional innovation platform”. As part of this event, 187 connections were made from different regions of the Russian Federation: from the Lugansk People’s Republic, the Krasnodar Territory, Nizhny Novgorod, the Republics of Komi and Kalmykia, the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug, the Rostov, Yaroslavl and Kaluga regions.     The Foundation was founded in 2007 in the Krasnoyarsk Territory.
    The mission of the foundation is “Smart help to orphans through the efforts of caring adults!”

    The Foundation implements the following programs:

    • I want to take care of orphans when they get to hospitals.
    • It’s time for children to go home! – filming and distribution of video questionnaires for the purpose of placing children in a family.
    • Children at home – support for foster families.
    • Co-Action – post-boarding support for graduates of orphanages, assistance in finding employment, legal support in solving issues related to housing.
    • Targeted assistance – implementation of applications from legal representatives and organizations for minors left without parental care, as part of improving the quality of life of orphans and children left without parental care.
    • Growing up in a family — prevention of family problems and social orphanhood; preservation of the birth family for the child and its support.
    • School of foster parents – training of citizens who have expressed a desire to accept orphans and children left without parental care for family forms of placement.

    Thresholds for stairs, corner, overhead, made of aluminum and brass

    L-shaped thresholds for stairs, made of brass, aluminum and stainless steel

    Poor, age-inappropriate vocabulary

    Some of the parents whose children are already in school have received complaints from teachers that their children have a rather poor vocabulary that is not appropriate for their age.

    A child’s vocabulary is mainly formed in the family and is finally formed by the age of 6-7. If this does not happen, parents will have to deal with replenishing the vocabulary and developing the thinking of their baby along with specialists.

    Your child may know a large number of words, and if asked, he will easily explain their meaning. However, this is a passive rather than an active vocabulary (lexicon).

    Often the problem lies in insufficient reading, lack of sociability or, on the contrary, excessive activity of the child and his tendency to intercept words from youth slang.

    Common problems of all toddlers and some adolescents with poor vocabulary are:

    • Frequent use of interjections and pronouns;
    • The words “parasites”;
    • Gestures that replace words.

    Children who have difficulty expressing their thoughts begin to imitate others, as a result of which they learn not the best vocabulary.

    Poor vocabulary provokes an inaccurate understanding of the meanings of many words. There is nothing for such children to select test words from, so they often make mistakes when writing.

    Deviations in the development of the vocabulary usually do not disappear on their own and require special attention not only from adults, but also from doctors.

    The development of a student’s vocabulary depends on many factors.

    The level of development of thinking that a child has reached determines the possibilities of assimilating words. Words of generalizing meaning become accessible to understanding only after the formation of the mental operation of generalization.

    The vocabulary develops in the course of acquaintance with the surrounding world, its objects, phenomena, and depends on the socio-cultural level of people raising a child.

    As speech and thinking develop, the gradually replenished vocabulary is ordered, systematized, forming semantic fields or word formations by meaning.

    The following directions of dictionary development have been identified:

    • Expansion of the vocabulary
    • Clarification of the meaning of words
    • Development of the word meaning structure
    • Formation of semantic fields
    • Extension of links between words.

    Describing the vocabulary of students, it should be noted not only its limitations, but also an insufficient understanding of the meanings of words. It is this feature that underlies many errors in the use of words.

    Mistakes that schoolchildren make:

    The pig laughs (grunts)

    The shawl is a naughty;

    Begonia is a competition where everyone is running.

    Vocabulary development games:

    Similar words game

    Purpose: to expand the vocabulary of synonyms, develop the ability to identify words that are similar in meaning.

    We call the child a series of words and ask them to determine which two of them are similar in meaning and why. We explain to the child that similar words are friend words. And they are called so because they are similar in meaning.

    Knock-call-drum;

    Firewood-flame-fire;

    Ship-wave-ship;
    Friend – friend – enemy;

    Sadness – joy – sadness;

    Food – cleaning – food;

    Labor – plant – work;

    Fear-laughter-horror;

    Old lady-grandfather;

    Dance – dance – song;

    Run – rush – go;

    Think – want – think;

    Walk – sit – walk;

    Listen – look – look;

    Cowardly – quiet – shy;

    Old – wise – smart;
    Stupid – small – stupid;
    Funny – big – huge.

    Game “Finish the sentence”

    Purpose: formation of semantic fields, expansion of the dictionary of antonyms. An adult pronounces an unfinished sentence, the student selects the right word, choosing from words with the opposite meaning.

    • Batteries are needed in the house to make it (cold, warm, hot)
    • At the holiday they try to make the guests feel (bitter, sad, fun)
    • The morning is over, it starts (night, day, evening)
    • Lemon was sprinkled with sugar to make it (bitter, sour, sweet)
    • Knives are sharpened to become (dull, crooked, sharp)
    • A tree is watered to grow and become (high, low, straight)
    • The water in the kettle is boiled to make it (hot, warm, cold)

    Game “Two friends”

    Purpose: development of a dictionary of synonyms.

    Think of words-friends to these words:

    tiny – (small), brave – (brave), beautiful – (beautiful).

    Say the opposite game

    Purpose: to expand the dictionary of antonyms.

    For this game we need a ball.
    Throw the ball to the child and say the word. The child, returning the ball, calls the word opposite in meaning.
    Now you and I will turn into stubborn people who do everything the other way around. I throw you the ball and say the word, and you say the opposite. For example: dark, but vice versa – light.

    New York fireman opens a hydrant, 1908, USA

    The first hydrants appeared in New York at the beginning of the 19th century. The model in the photo was used in 1904–1979. Now there are 111 thousand of them installed – several in each quarter, which does not please drivers – parking near the hydrant is prohibited and threatens with a fine and evacuation.
    In Russia, hydrants are hidden under hatches, you can find them by the red PG sign.

    Former prisoners were given wages for their time in Soviet captivity. Along the route of trains to the border, a network of outlets with consumer goods, including those in short supply at that time, was deployed. The USSR tried to part with its former enemies on a good wave.

    In the mid-1940s, the pesticide dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) was thought to help prevent polio. It has also been used against mosquitoes. Streets and gardens, homes, swimming pools, and playgrounds have been heavily sprayed with DDT in many parts of the United States using spray vehicles. Between 1946 and 1962, 1.34 billion pounds of DDT were sprayed in the US.

    B-24 Bomber Comrade and Master Sergeant Stephen Dargo
    Master Sergeant Stephen J. Dergo (1917-2004) was not a pilot but a mechanic for a B-24 Liberator serial number 41-51128 of the 579th Squadron, 392nd Bombardment Air Group, USAF. He probably prepared the bomber well for sorties, since the crew allowed Stephen, who had Russian roots, in November 1944 to name the plane “Comrade” and draw a large red star on it. The name turned out to be lucky – “Comrade” survived 21 sorties, returned after the war to the United States, where it was decommissioned.
