How We Chose the Best Law Schools in New York

We’ve ranked our schools on a couple factors that we’ll outline below:

National Ranking

We use US News’ ranking to evaluate schools, the most popular and most in-depth ranking system in the United States.

Bar Passage Rate

Bar passage rate refers to the percentage of students that pass the New York State Bar Exam and pass into the Bar Association post-graduation.

Post-Graduation Salaries

This statistic refers to average salaries of the school’s graduates, with the lower number being the median for attorneys who go into public law and the higher number for those who

Acceptance Rate

The percentage of applicants who are accepted into a given law program.

LSAT Range

The LSAT is the key test required to enter any American law school. The range quoted here is the middle 50% of accepted students, with the two numbers representing the outer range.

Price

The quoted price is the yearly tuition to attend the given law school.

Now, let’s take a deeper look at the best law schools in the state.

The Best Law Schools in New York

1. Columbia University School of Law

Link: www.law.columbia.edu

  • National Ranking: 4
  • Bar Passage Rates: 98 percent
  • Post-Graduation Salaries: $60,000 to $180,000
  • Acceptance Rate: 16.8 percent
  • LSAT: 170 — 174
  • Price: $69,916

Columbia has one of the best law programs in the country. Graduates from here move on to have some of the highest paying, most prestigious law jobs in the country. The small-sized private university has a class size of only 350 people.

With a bar exam pass rate approaching 98%, you’re also almost guaranteed to pass the bar if you study here and apply yourself. But of course, thanks to the school’s reputation, they can be picky about who they accept.

If you want a good chance of getting admitted, you’ll have to hit a minimum of 170 on your LSATs. Even if you do, it’s still difficult: the school’s acceptance rate is only 16.8 percent. So, do your best to get your application in early and study hard. The school will also consider extracurricular activities. Before applying you should try to gain relevant work experience, and explore volunteering possibilities as well. While it’s expensive, it’s one of the best law educations you can get nationwide.

2. New York University School of Law

Link: www.law.nyu.edu

  • National Ranking: 6
  • Bar Passage Rate: 97. 5 percent
  • Post-Graduation Salaries: $60,000 to $180,000
  • Acceptance Rate: 23.6 percent
  • LSAT: 167 — 172
  • Price: $66,422

This private university is located in Greenwich Village in Manhattan. It is relatively large for a law school with a student body of around 1700. The school is quite tough to get into, but it’s a smidge easier by acceptance rate than admissions for Columbia or Cornell. Curriculum here is incredibly intensive, though and students here do need to work hard.

While there’s an active social scene at this school, the workloads prevent too much hedonistic behavior. NYU law school is another historic campus — the school started in 1831. With a fantastic bar passage rate and stellar post-grad salaries, the price is expensive but justifiable, although you’ll need to have your application well in order to be successful.

3. Cornell Law School

Link: www.lawschool.cornell.edu

  • National Ranking: 13
  • Bar Passage Rate: 95. 9 percent
  • Post-Graduation Salaries: $64,228 to $180,000
  • Acceptance Rate: 21.1 percent
  • LSAT: 164 — 168
  • Price: $65,541

This selective private university is one of the top 15 in the country. They’re very particular when it comes to who enters the program. You have to perform well academically and demonstrate that you can maintain balance in your life.

Acceptance is difficult to achieve — only about 1 in 5 applicants make the grade. That’s a good thing, though, because this is not an option for slackers. If you’re willing to work hard, you’ll get an excellent start for your law career. And more important than curriculum is the network that the school provides. Alumni are very active and usually happy to mentor new graduates. The college campus is beautiful, with historic buildings to inspire you.

With just over 600 JD students, Cornell University is considered small to mid-sized. The cost to attend the school is above average, but with a good LSAT score, financial aid is available to students.

4. Fordham University School of Law

Link: www.fordham.edu/info/20346/school_of_law

  • National Ranking: 27
  • Bar Passage Rate: 92.3 percent
  • Post-Graduation Salaries: $61,250 to $180,000
  • Acceptance Rate: 25.9 percent
  • LSAT: 161 — 166
  • Price: $60,406

This private Catholic school has offered outstanding education since 1841 and draws on traditional Jesuit values. These values emphasize respect, hard work, and morality. Graduates of Fordham can expect similar salaries to the top schools on this list.

But while the quality of the education you’ll get is top-tier, entrance is slightly more relaxed in terms of LSAT scores. That said, you’ll need to have a stellar academic background and application to gain entrance. There’s a fair amount of competition for the top spots here.

5. Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, Yeshiva University

Link: www.cardozo.yu.edu

  • National Ranking: 53
  • Bar Passage Rate: 85. 6 percent
  • Post-Graduation Salaries: $60,000 to $70,000
  • Acceptance Rate: 40.3 percent
  • LSAT: 157 — 162
  • Price: $60,610

The Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University is a private law school with a relatively large student body, featuring about 1000 students. The bar passage rate is a little lower than higher-tier options, probably correlated with the more relaxed admissions requirements.

But as long as you achieve an LSAT score of 157 or more, you’ve got a good chance of getting in. The competition for entry is average, so you’ve got a good shot at getting in compared to schools in the top 50. Campus life is active, and the law school represents a significant part of the student body, but the focus is definitely on academics.

Although it’s officially a Jewish school, the student population isn’t particularly religious. While here isn’t any religious influence on curriculum, but there is strong support for the Jewish community here. While tuition is quite high for a school outside of the top 50, this school offers more financial assistance for students than any reviewed in this state so far.

6. St. John’s University School of Law

Link: www.stjohns.edu/law

  • National Ranking: 74
  • Bar Passage Rate: 88.6 percent
  • Post-Graduation Salaries: $62,500 to $79,000
  • Acceptance Rate: 41.9 percent
  • LSAT: 153 — 160
  • Price: $59,480

As the name suggests, this is a Catholic school. It’s privately run and has an excellent reputation, as it’s well in the top 100 law schools in America.

A significant advantage here is that it is relatively easy to get accepted. LSAT scores required are lower than is the case for most top institutions. There is relatively average competition for entry, but there’s a very small pool of applicants: only 247 students attend the institution, less than 100 per class year.

The school is in Queens, a borough of New York City. The school is expensively priced, a side effect of being in the Big Apple, but networking effects from being in the city can help with job projects post-graduation. Financial aid programs are available.

7. SUNY Buffalo Law School

Link: www.law.buffalo.edu

  • National Ranking: 99
  • Bar Passage Rate: 77.5 percent
  • Post-Graduation Salaries: $54,000 to $62,500
  • Acceptance Rate: 57.9 percent
  • LSAT: 150 — 156
  • Price: $27,964

This law school sneaks in the top 100 by rankings with a reputation that’s well above average. The campus is large, with a total of around 19,500 students, but the law school itself is small with under 500 Juris Doctor candidates. This helps with a high student to staff ratio of 5.5 students to one staff member.

Gaining entry is relatively simple because of the scores required. The bottom 25 percent of students admitted have a score under 150, which represents the 40th percentile of test scores. Just get your application in early because they still reject over approximately 500 candidates per year.

The average cost of education here is reasonable, well below average for a law school in the top 100. The school also offers need-based financial aid programs.

8. Syracuse University College of Law

Link: www.law.syr.edu

  • National Ranking: 111
  • Bar Passage Rate: 91.4 percent
  • Post-Graduation Salaries: $50,750 to $65,000
  • Acceptance Rate: 52.1 percent
  • LSAT: 152 — 156
  • Price: $51,422

Experts and graduates alike highly recommend this small private institution in Syracuse. It’s class size is miniscule: 230, meaning it’s still quite competitive to get into the school. That said, it’s easier than trying to get into Columbia or Cornell, but it’s definitely not a sure thing. A strong LSAT is still required to gain admission.

That the school has a high bar passage rate despite its lower admission requirements speaks volumes about the quality of education there. While the undergraduate program has a party reputation and an emphasis on sports, the law school is very different and those who don’t hit the books hard won’t find success here.

While tuition is above average for a school of this caliber, the school offers financial aid. Post-grad salaries speak to the competition for starting positions among graduates in New York, but diligent students can work their way up, although there are more abundant, less competitive positions in places like Albany and Buffalo than in New York City.

9. Albany Law School of Union University

Link: www.albanylaw.edu

  • Ranking: 118
  • Bar Passage Rates: 70.6 percent
  • Post-Graduation Salaries: $59,000 to $73,000
  • Acceptance Rate: 54.6 percent
  • LSAT Range: 151 — 156
  • Price: $47,450

If you’re looking for more individualized attention, this school could be a good fit. There is a total of around 2,200 students on the whole campus and 372 in the law school. While the acceptance rate is just over 50%, admissions are competitive, so it’s important to take your application and test scores seriously if you hope to gain admission.

Albany is a private school with above-average tuition. Many students do qualify for student aid. Private sector salaries are relatively high for a school outside of the top 100, and public position placement is high as well with relatively strong salaries. That has more to do with the staff support network outside of academics: a career center helps place graduates.

10. Hofstra University Maurice A. Dean School of Law

Link: www.law.hofstra.edu

  • National Ranking: 160
  • Bar Passage Rate: 68.2 percent
  • Post-Graduation Salaries: $61,000 to $70,000
  • Acceptance Rate: 48.1 percent
  • LSAT: 148 — 155
  • Price: $59,214

At first glance, the bar passage rate for Hofstra University looks pretty low. It looks even worse when you compare it to the others on this list. So, how did Hofstra squeeze its way into the top ten? Well, at the end of the day, it’s a pretty good school. It’s selective, admitting under 50% of applicants and post-graduation salaries are higher than many higher-ranked institutions.

The lower ranking could be related to the lower scores required to gain admission. But what made us include it here is that the school puts a lot of emphasis on the practical aspects of the law. And, if you plan to practice law, this emphasis on real-world experience is a significant advantage. It helps with career placement as well, with 81% of students employed within 10 months of graduation.

Is the school up to the standards of Columbia or Cornell? No, not really. But, at the same time, not everyone can get into those top schools. Overall, you’re getting a good education. The school is of a large size with around 820 students. Over 100 professors mean that the student to staff ratio is bar none.

The tuition is pretty steep, but if you’re willing to work, you’ll get your money’s worth. The faculty are very supportive of students who are eager to work hard, and the bar passage rate, while not incredible, is about average for the state as a whole.

Final Thoughts

From this list, it’s clear what our top choices are. The entire top four all offer excellent academic opportunities. On the downside, though, they are high-pressure environments and difficult to gain entry to.

Lower tier schools can be equally academically rigorous, but offer advantages in terms of individualized attention, better career placement, and lower tuitions.

But now, though, it’s up to you: which school will you choose?

York and education in the USA in general: Bay Academy, beloved by Russian-speaking parents, in the ranking of the best public educational institutions from the sixth to the eighth grades, jumped right from 17th place to third.

In this case, we are talking about the rating of the state, not the city. To find the school you are interested in in the list, enter its name and number in the search bar above the rating.

This school ranked seventeenth in 2019-20, now it is in the top three. The vacated seventeenth place was taken by another popular school among former Soviet parents – Mark Twain. Here, too, progress is noticeable: according to the results of past tests, this educational institution was in 29th place.

      Bay Academy

There are nearly five thousand schools in New York State. The ranking, however, took into account data from charter schools, but not from private schools, which, as a rule, prefer not to disclose their data.

Topping the list is The Anderson School, a small school located in Manhattan.
On the second – The Clinton school, which is also located in the City.

Places were allocated to schools based on the results of the math and science tests that the children took at the end of the year. By the way, if you scroll through the rating, you will notice an interesting feature: in a year when virtually all children studied from home, they began to take tests much better.

Of course, it is not indicated in this ranking, but students’ parents know that for three years in a row it has been the Bay Academy that has ranked first in the state in the Olympiad in Science. Two years ago, this school was only two points short of getting into the national level, as a result of which children are selected for international olympiads.

One of the school’s science teams

You can find out the rating of the elementary school here. By the way, charter schools got all the first places there, on the first place – an educational institution located in Bergen Beach.

DOG DAYCARE AND MORE IN TEMECULA, CA

What pet parent doesn’t feel guilty about leaving their pup home alone? Balance your life while we balance theirs at Dogtopia. Whether you’re planning that next vacation or just trying to avoid that sad puppy face when you leave your dog home alone, we provide fully-equipped dog daycare and boarding services. At our daycare, your dog is assigned to a playroom based on their size, temperament and play style to ensure that everyone plays safely, and they get to hang out and play with their friends for up to 10 hours a day.

Is your pup starting to get a little stinky? Skip the mess and stress of bathing your dog at home and bring them to our full-service spa. We have spa appointments, or you can create a combo day of play and beauty by combining their time in the spa with a daycare or boarding package.

Our services include:

  • Dog daycare
  • Overnight and weekend boarding services
  • Webcam access
  • Spa services

We recommend that you bring your pup to Dogtopia of Temecula for a visit if you’re planning to board them with us for a day or a weekend. This gives them a chance to get used to our facilities and team. As a bonus, we provide a free, no-obligation tour of our space so you’ll feel comfortable leaving them with us when the time comes. If you want to schedule a visit to our daycare center, please call us at (951) 587-2882 and let us know when we can expect you. We can’t wait to get to know you and your dog, and show you everything we have to offer!

A PREMIER DOG FACILITY

When we designed our space, it was with our doggie clientele in mind. The playrooms are all climate-controlled with flooring made of compressed rubber, a material that is easy on dog’s pads. This greatly benefits dogs suffering from hip dysplasia and other bone and joint conditions because it’s a soft walking surface. Plus, our special rubber flooring means you don’t have to worry about your housetraining being impacted in any way.

You can check in on your pet anytime during the day via our live webcams, which are installed in each of our playrooms and can be accessed from any device with an internet connection. The webcams allow you to watch your dog throughout the day and ensure they are having fun and making new furry friends.

Our playrooms are staffed with our wonderful dog care professionals who are dedicated to ensuring your dog’s safety. Dogtopia of Temecula’s room attendants go through rigorous training in dog behavior, so they know the language of dogs and how to safely care for more than one pup at a time. We want to make sure your dog is safe. After all, dogs need to be safe before they can have any fun!

Dogtopia of Temecula has earned certification status as a Heroes for Healthy PetsTM facility. The Heroes for Healthy PetsTM Certification Program in Infectious Disease Management provides training for preventative care, including strategic vaccination, and cleaning and disinfection protocols to help maintain disease-free facilities and keep pets healthy.

The program is co-sponsored by the International Boarding and Pet Services Association, National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America, Pet Sitters International, VETgirl, and Barkleigh Productions.

SCHEDULE YOUR NEXT VISIT

Very good location. A couple of minutes walk to the city center.

There is no private parking. Used quite expensive parking services in the next street. But I don’t think many downtown hotels offer free parking. So just don’t take the car.

The meaning of words in dictionaries

The complexity and versatility of the Russian language sometimes surprises even its native speakers. The peculiarity lies in the lack of structure. After all, a lot of liberties are allowed not only in the construction of sentences. The use of some word forms also has several variations.

Difficulties and peculiarities of working with the word

The Russian language has a huge number of assumptions that cannot be found in other cultures. After all, not only literary words, of which there are more than 150 thousand, are often used in speech. But also dialectisms. Since there are many peoples and cultures in Russia, there are more than 250 thousand of them. Not surprisingly, even native speakers sometimes need to find the exact meanings of words. This can be done using explanatory dictionaries or a special WordMap service.

Why is such a platform convenient? This is a clear and simple dictionary of word meanings, which is proposed to be used online. The service allows:

  • to find out the exact meaning of a word or idiom;
  • determine its correct spelling;
  • to understand how to properly emphasize it.

The site offers to get acquainted with the history of the word. It tells what language or culture it came from, when and by whom it was used in speech.

When looking up the meaning of words in a dictionary, it is important to understand its essence. After all, the sound component of each lexical unit in the language is inextricably linked with certain objects or phenomena. That is why when using the service, you should not put an equal sign between the meaning of the searched word and its concept. They are interconnected, but they are not a single whole. For example, the concept of the word “center” can be defined as the middle of something. However, specific meanings can indicate the interior of a room, a city, a geometric figure, etc. Sometimes it refers to a medical organization, mathematics or mechanical engineering. Polysemy is the complexity of the Russian language.

Finding values through WordMap

In order to find out what a word means, painstaking work has been carried out. After all, different manuals and collections can give different meanings of the same lexical constructions. To get the most complete picture of the word, you should contact the WordMap service. The system contains values from the most popular and authoritative sources, including dictionaries:

  • Ozhegov;
  • Dahl;
  • medical;
  • cities;
  • jargons;
  • TSB, etc.

Thanks to this, you can find out not only all bookish, but also figurative meanings of a lexical construction.

Should Public Schools Provide Teenage Parents with Daycare?

The debate over sex education in public schools has now been extended to the question of what schools should do after students choose to have sex.

According to recent reports, teen pregnancy is on the rise across the entire country.  In fact, as Martinsville Bulletin reports in “Teen Birth Rates Soar,” the national birth rate among teens aged 15 to 19 has increased by 1.4 percent from 2006 to 2007.  In total, this equates to 42.5 births for every 1,000 females in this age group.

With the rising rate of teenage pregnancy, many communities are being forced to debate over whether or not public schools should provide day care programs for teen parents.  Many teenage parents, especially teenage moms, choose to drop out upon giving birth to their child.  Therefore, some leaders assert that public school daycare programs can help decrease the propensity for some teen parents to not reach graduation.   On the other side of the argument, many public leaders and community members believe that day care only encourages irresponsible sexual choices.

The Pros of Public School Day Care

As the Martinsville Bulletin further reveals, in areas of lower income and employment rates, teenage pregnancy rates tend to rise.  For example, Henry County, located in Virginia, experienced a startling increase from 33.8 children for every 1,000 females to 40.9 children for every 1,000 females (under the age of 20) over the course of just one year (2006 to 2007).  To combat this rise in teen pregnancy, public schools are one of the first and primary programs striving to implement changes to deter this trend.

This CNN news clip illustrates the issue.

In areas with high teen pregnancy rates, many school officials assert that the community must strive to prevent teens from dropping out of school.   Many leaders argue that teenage dropouts lead to a great number of economic and social problems in the community, as teenage dropouts and teen parents are more likely to become unemployed or work for lower paying jobs.

One of the central solutions to overcoming this trend, some argue, is by providing support services for teen parents in public schools. Day care programs are not common but are typically only offered at the high school level.  With high school daycare programs at various schools, teenage students/parents are able to bring their son or daughter to school with them, leave them with caretakers, and attend classes as scheduled. At the end of the day, teen parents pick up their child and then resume their parental caretaking responsibilities. While the system is controversial, many leaders argue that it is the best plan to reduce teenage dropouts and a pattern of terminating education.

The Cons of Public School Day Care

While some leaders argue that public school day care programs help offer support and solutions for teens who are struggling, many school leaders and community members contrarily believe that these programs are simply encouraging irresponsible choices.   Instead of making the life of a teen parent easier, some community members believe that teens should, instead, be provided with more abstinence and safe sex prevention programs.

In addition to these programs, many assert that public school day care is simply too costly, and inevitably takes funding away from more deserving students.  Since day care programs have to employ caretakers, the cost of running a public school day care can be quite high—and the funding for this support comes directly out of the school budget.   In recent months, amidst a recessionary economy, many public school day care programs are faced with the reality that their resources will most likely be cut or shut down.

Here is a look at a day in the life of a teenage mother.

An example of at risk programs is seen in the Gotham Schools system, located in New York City.   With a teen parent support program established in 1982, Gotham Schools have provided extra support and day care assistance for teenage parents for nearly three decades.  Yet, with an anticipated budget cut for the 2009-2010 school year, the New York Civil Liberties Union has argued that the Department of Education should find its own source of funding to continue to provide day care support.

However, Gotham Schools’ new funding crisis only represents a small example of a nation-wide problem and debate.  As the cost of day care is considered to be relatively high, some school and community leaders feel that these support programs should be the first to go in order to protect the educational focus of the non-parent students in schools.  On the other hand, supporters of daycare for teen parents believe that this support is critical for keeping students in school and posited for future productivity.

Calling ‘Daycare’ ‘School’ Professionalizes Early Education

Education

What the linguistic shift indicates about the state of early-childhood education

By Jessica Levy

Jim Young / Reuters

Chelsea Clinton made headlines recently as she campaigned for her mother—not for the policy proposals she defended, but for the fact that she did not accompany her not-quite-2-year-old daughter Charlotte to the first day of her Manhattan “school.” While detractors were quick to berate her for missing this defining event in her child’s life, supporters rushed to her defense by noting that the child’s father, who took Charlotte to school together with the family nanny, is perfectly capable of taking the lead. But what’s missing from the discussion is an objection to the controversy’s premise—since when has “school” started at age 2?

The question highlights recent changes in the favored everyday lexicon of parents to refer to programs for their babies and young toddlers—programs that were once simply called “daycare. ” Whether consciously or subconsciously, though, educators, psychologists, and parents themselves are noticing that parents are increasingly swapping out the term for the more in-vogue “school.” Parents’ “first day of school” photos on Facebook feature children not just in uniforms, but in onesies.

Technically, a school should meet the defining standard of serving as an institution whose primary goal is education. For under-2s, though, when everything from drinking out of a cup to peeing on the potty is technically educational, that distinction becomes more difficult to make.

Sarah Fader, the CEO of the mental-health nonprofit organization Stigma Fighters, noted that guilt may be one of the causes behind the more liberal use of “school.” New parents often struggle to reconcile the pressure to return to work with the guilt or sadness they may experience when separating from their child. Mothers without famous last names may not have their parenting decisions scrutinized in tabloids, but they are certainly scrutinized by their peers. “Calling it school distracts from this harsh reality,” Fader said. “The children are learning something every day. Their environment is enriched.”

As more American children enter formal childcare programs at earlier ages and for longer hours, that need for legitimacy becomes even stronger. Although formal education in the United States typically starts with kindergarten at age 5, the average American child under age 3 spent more than 30 hours weekly in childcare, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development reports that 30 percent of American children under age 2 attend some sort of formal childcare. To accommodate these numbers, there has been huge growth in the number of childcare facilities in the United States: As of 2007, there were a total of 766,401 childcare facilities, up from just 262,511 in 1987. If parental guilt is indeed one of the elements contributing to the linguistic trend, parents sending their children to childcare programs can at least take comfort that they are in good company.

Still, the change in semantics is significantly more complex than a guilt-reducing linguistic flourish. Dismissing the cadre of parents describing their diaper-wearing, bottle-drinking children as going to “school” would be ignoring an important underlying cultural phenomenon: Early-childhood education experts agree that something has fundamentally changed about American childcare in the past decade, and that the change in terminology reflects that shift. The switch is not a coincidence; childcare programs are, indeed, becoming more educational.

Children are often rushed from one activity to the next … [and] that approach can be counterproductive to childhood development.

Gina Lofquist, the senior director of teacher education for the American Montessori Society (AMS), agreed that “what parents are searching for, and what schools are trying to provide, is a way to provide education in a childcare setting that looks different than it has in the past.”

Parents are no longer simply selecting the closest child-care center with spots available, but are instead participating in a two-way selection process to find the right fit for their child and the educational philosophy that best matches their own. In this context, Montessori, Reggio Emilia, and Waldorf schools—progressive models for education—have become household names as they emerged as leaders in efforts to unlock effective and holistic approaches to early-childhood education.

But not all schools, even ones with fancy titles, are so carefully structured, and the profit motive behind the linguistic trend is impossible to ignore. The average cost of care for a non-infant preschooler at an accredited childcare center is $11,050 yearly, according to the National Association of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies. With so much money at stake, providers are eager to give parents what they want. That ongoing courtship entrenches the dynamic: Parents, eager to give their children a head start, select programs that seem more educational for their babies and young toddlers. In turn, the programs continue to market themselves in a way that conjures up an especially educational image.

That, says the University of Delaware professor Roberta Golinkoff, can be dangerous under the wrong circumstances. Changing the sign on the door to say “school” instead of “daycare” may be innocuous, but there are signs that the linguistic changes correspond to a rise of a more structured, scheduled day reminiscent of schools for older children. Children are often rushed from one activity to the next, explains Golinkoff, without sufficient time to play and explore at their own pace. For babies and toddlers, that approach can be counterproductive to childhood development.

“There’s an extreme overemphasis on content for American kids,” said Golinkoff, who recently co-authored the book Becoming Brilliant: What Science Tells Us about Raising Successful Children. “It’s, like, all that matters is getting information in kids’ heads, and that’s unfortunate,” she said. “Content is crucially important, but it’s not the only thing that matters. It’s not just all about memorizing the ABCs, which unfortunately these schools are probably going to torture little kids to do,” Golinkoff joked.

So what else should childcare providers focus on? According to experts: plenty of free play, plenty of opportunities to socialize and be part of a community, and plenty of exposure to new experiences. “A good preschool tries to help children gain self-confidence, become more independent, and develop interpersonal skills,” writes the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) in the book Caring For Your Baby and Young Child. The AAP also acknowledges concerns about programs that are created to cater to parents’ fear or guilt rather than children’s needs: “Be wary of programs that claim to teach academic skills or ‘speed up’ children’s intellectual development. From a developmental standpoint, most preschoolers are not yet ready to begin formal education, and pushing them will only prejudice them against learning.”

“Children are learning continuously. You can’t stop them.”

Not all experts think that the daycare-as-school trend is troubling, though. Others don’t take it too seriously, noting that the trend may indeed be more about semantics than substance. For the psychologist and radio host Stacy Haynes, the shift in favor of “school” is just an innocent linguistic adjustment that can help reluctant youngsters overcome anxiety. “Older children go to school and so younger siblings want to go to school, too,” she said, calling the reference a “play on words” that can instill confidence in children once it actually is time for kindergarten. “Many parents find their children are willing to go to school if they know they have already attended ‘school,’” she explained. For this reason, Haynes recommends that parents refer to outside care as school from the beginning.

Complicating matters further, there are some exceptions in which a more intense educational environment can be beneficial even for very young children, such as federally mandated early-intervention programs or preschool special-education programs, or those for students that may be exceptionally gifted and ready for a more challenging or stimulating environment. Pediatricians can evaluate children or refer them to a child-development specialist who can make specific recommendations for children who may fall under these categories.

Ultimately, whether a child care is titled a “school” or a “daycare,” and no matter how it functions, the American Montessori Society’s Lofquist notes that it is certainly a good sign for children’s futures that parents seem to be increasingly involved, informed, and aware about childcare options. “Parents are becoming more and more savvy, and they realize that their child has that capability of learning, and standards are raising,” Lofquist said. “The reality is, children are learning continuously. You can’t stop them.”

Kindergarten merged with the school. 4 changes awaiting educators

Home/K-magazine/Association of schools and kindergartens. What is dangerous for educators

For the educator

Combining schools and kindergartens. What is dangerous for educators

04/23/2021

In recent years, the reorganization and optimization of educational organizations have been increasingly carried out. Some schools are downsizing and merging with others, as well as creating holdings and attaching kindergartens to schools. Most often, parents and teachers are unhappy: there are fears that salaries will become lower, some of the staff will be cut, and pedagogical traditions will be destroyed. We figure out how dangerous the association is, and how it can be useful.

Why the state unites kindergartens and schools

Most often, kindergartens are attached to schools for financial reasons. Kindergartens that are part of the holding can get more resources, even for the creation of living conditions. Moreover, kindergartens are starting to implement programs that exist at school, for example, to purchase more office equipment and other equipment. The association also helps to reduce accountants, lawyers, and other non-teaching employees – this money should go to teachers’ salaries.

There are also non-economic reasons. Merging into a holding helps to create continuity: children go to kindergarten and start preparing at the age of 6-7 to enter a certain school. They would go for it anyway, since they live nearby, but they will be more prepared for it and they will have less stress associated with adaptation.

How the union will affect caregivers

There are no documents that can describe how the reorganization should take place. But it is clear that in this case other regulatory acts should not be violated: the Labor Code of the Russian Federation, provisions on wages and others. Therefore, focus only on the existing experience and promises of employees of departments and ministries of education.

What mandatory vaccinations should educators undergo?

There will be no layoffs for teachers. If during school mergers teachers or administration can be reduced, then when creating holdings this does not happen: the number of children is not reduced, teachers from schools cannot replace educators and vice versa. Only administrative staff can be fired.

Salaries will increase . Due to the reduction of part of the staff, the money will be released and at their expense the salaries of teachers will be increased. At least that’s what officials say. In fact, much will depend on the willpower of the leader. If he fights for the budget, for maintaining the previous criteria for incentive payments, then employees will expect pluses.

There will be more bureaucracy. Now applications for equipment, cleaning products, etc. will need to be coordinated not only with the kindergarten supply manager, but also with the school management. Perhaps the manager will do this, but more time will definitely pass from the application to the purchase.

Less attention to kindergarten projects. Kindergartens have their own traditions – competitions, participation in grants, intra-group events. Schools can support this, or they can lobby their own projects, while kindergarten schools can censor and ban it.

only the opinion of the writer. We ask that users follow our
review guidelines. If you see a review that does not reflect these guidelines, you can email us. We will assess
the review and decide the appropriate next step. Please note – we will not remove a review simply because it is
