FAQs
AMERICA’S MOST ACCREDITED
We’re so proud!
Nationally only 10% of daycares are accredited – nearly 100% of our learning centers are. That’s a big difference,
and that means KinderCare kids are getting the very best. Here’s why.
SCHOOL-READY
What Learning Looks Like
Our talented early-childhood teachers set kids down the path toward becoming lifelong learners in a positive, safe, and nurturing environment.
Millbrook KinderCare Programs
Infant Programs (6 weeks–1 year)
Leaving your baby in someone else’s care is a big step. Everyone at our
centers—most importantly, our naturally gifted infant teachers—will work with
you to make sure the transition goes smoothly. When you step into our infant
classroom, you’ll see how much we want your infant to feel safe, loved, and
ready to explore their world.
Toddler Programs (1–2 Years)
Everything in our toddler classroom is designed for little explorers. That’s
because a lot is going on at this age. When your child is wandering all over the
place, that means they’re learning and discovering new things every day. We’ll
help them explore their interests (and find new ones!) as they play and learn.
Discovery Preschool Programs (2–3 Years)
This age is filled with so much wonder and curiosity. That’s why we offer a ton
of books and toys and bring artwork down to kids eye level. Children in
discovery preschool also begin to learn how we all work together in a
classroom. Simple math and science, pretend play, and group play help them
get used to a more structured school setting.
Preschool Programs (3–4 Years)
This age is all about expression, when kids really start to form their own ideas
about what they want to play and how they want to create. Every day in our
preschool classroom, your child will explore science experiments, create
artwork, and play pretend—all the skills needed for their big next step:
kindergarten!
Prekindergarten Programs (4–5 Years)
When you walk into one of our pre-K classrooms, you’ll see artwork and
writing displayed around the room. Labels are everywhere to help kids connect
letters with words. You’ll also see pictures on the walls that reflect the families
in our community. Your child will also deepen their knowledge in language,
math, science, Spanish, and social skills.
Transitional Kindergarten Programs (4–5 Years)
If your child finished pre-K but missed the kindergarten cutoff date, transitional
kindergarten is a great stepping stone to big-kid school. Our project-based
learning model emphasizes critical thinking, communication, and creativity.
Kids take lead roles on projects and complete them in small groups.
Our Teachers
We’re the only company in early childhood education to select teachers based on natural talent. Being a great educator isn’t enough though.
KinderCare teachers are also amazing listeners, nurturers, boo-boo fixers, and smile-makers. Put more simply,
we love our teachers and your child will, too.
Meet just a few of our amazing KinderCare teachers!
A KINDERCARE TEACHER WITH
An Artist’s Heart
“My classroom is full of art!” says Mary Annthipie-Bane, an award-winning early childhood educator at KinderCare. Art and creative expression, she says, help children discover who they really are.
We put our best-in-class teachers in a best-in-class workplace. We’re so proud to have been named one of Gallup’s 37 winners of the Great Workplace Award.
When you put great teachers in an engaging center, your children will experience
an amazing place to learn and grow.
Family Stories
Don’t take our word for it. Hear what our families have to say about our amazing center!
At two years in age, my daughter had never been to daycare or stayed with anyone other than myself. I had decided to go back to work, so I was scared at the at first, but KinderCare was absolutely the right place for her. She has found a lot of support and loving care while learning so much every day! Miss Kris is a fantastic, patient teacher; Caroline talks about her all the time at home! Miss Nadia is so nurturing and giving that Caroline loves her like another grandmother. Miss Tami’s phonics class is the highlight of our week because Caroline enjoys it. I have been astounded by how much she’s learning, and I am so glad that I enrolled my daughter in KinderCare Millbrook!
Kimberly – KinderCare Parent
I am so excited to give my feedback about Kinder Care. This center has made me and my family feel so comfortable, warm welcoming and loved from the first day I entered their school. My one year old, which she will be two July 1 2016, she absolutely love the school and had such a bad experience at another center prior. My daughter cried and cried each and every day for three weeks straight at the other center but it was not a Kinder Care center. But once she came to Kinder Care it was totally different and she even told me she loves the school. My son is six years old and he is enjoying the summer camp program as well. I would definitely recommend this center on Millbrook Road in Raleigh any day. Thanks to my Kinder Care Family and keep up the good work.
Sincerely Chassie Ray

A childcare center may not be the first thing you’d expect at a ski lodge. Small World Child Care center in Mammoth Lakes, California, is equipped with everything you’d find at any daycare facility. There are cribs made up in a separate room for napping, as well as toys, face painting, a play house and other child-friendly amenities. Most providers who successfully make it through the first few years eventually start considering the idea of whether or not they could afford some help with the daycare……

The Daily Walk
Many years ago I decided to add a daily walk around our neighborhood to our morning schedule. We started out small by walking around our long block. Transporting Daycare Kids
I know there are many types of agreements between parents and providers when it comes to having children in the provider’s vehicle. There are parents who want it for their kids and many who pay providers to transport their child to and from school and preschool. Some providers transport their own children to school and have field trips as a major selling point of their business…….

Description two main areas:
– providing comprehensive gratuitous assistance in the restoration of Orthodox shrines; – promotion of spiritual and moral education and spiritual development of the individual We were able to provide assistance with construction materials to 6 churches in the Lipetsk and Voronezh regions. We have been holding the Easter Mosaic Charity Fair for the 2nd year in a row in the Europe shopping center on Sovetskaya, where volunteers actively help us. Funds from the fair are directed to the restoration of Orthodox shrines. We involve young people in our activities through other activities aimed at spiritual and moral education and development. For example: we prepared a photo exhibition “Orthodox churches. Life Through Time” of churches in the Lipetsk region, with their brief history, and placed it in one of the popular places among young people in the Europe shopping center, which will stand there from April 17, 2022 to May 17, 2022. Attracted students of the Children’s Art School. IN AND. Surikov, Lipetsk, to create paintings for the Easter fair for an online charity gallery. Funds from the sale of paintings also went to the restoration of Orthodox shrines. We conduct master classes with the participation of partners in the manufacture of Easter paraphernalia, instilling interest in spiritual culture and traditions. And most importantly, through creativity we involve children in participation in charity events, we form a culture of charity among the future generation. Conducted “Kindness” lessons in Lipetsk schools. We started shooting educational videos on the course “Fundamentals of Orthodox Culture” with the participation of schoolchildren, involving them in the filming process and giving them the opportunity to talk about the Motherland, about love, about patriotism, about faith. Every year we invite volunteers to plant the “Garden of Memory”. Last year, the Foundation and volunteers planted an alley near the monument to soldiers in the village. Sometimes the Dobrovsky district and bushes near the Poroysky Temple of Michael the Archangel (protector of soldiers). We carried out a photo project “The Wisdom of Years and the Inner Light 65+”. During the implementation of the photo project, we saw not only many beautiful faces, but also heard many wise words. The questionnaires that the participants of the photo project answered were not corrected by us, they were not adjusted to the general template, these are the real thoughts of the older generation about honor, love, conscience, which they shared with us – the new generation. The Bright Beginning Charitable Foundation also provides targeted assistance to children from large families and those with disabilities. Every year, on the eve of the New Year, such children receive sweet gifts and toys, and on the eve of September 1 – sets of schoolchildren. We don’t forget about the leisure time of privileged children, we give them trips to the circus, theaters, we prepare various holidays and activities for them together with our partners.

Art
The street art festival STENOGRAFFIA continues in Yekaterinburg. We talk about the works of artists who appeared in the urban space this summer.
Within the framework of the international festival of street art STENOGRAFFIA, artist Valeria Solodovnikova presented her debut work in the urban space on the street. Chelyuskintsev, 35. The plot of the drawing “Tenderness will save the world” takes place in a birch forest: a young man in a tracksuit runs away from a dog, saving a bouquet.
“This work is a metaphor for the fact that if you give a person flowers, they are guaranteed to reflect naivety, tenderness and awe. This is a story about the fact that we have two sides – one that destroys and one that strives to do something good. It is romantic and vandal at the same time,” shares Valeria Solodovnikova.
In her work, the artist uses the method of multiple exposure, when several frames are superimposed on each other and the effect of movement is created. In addition, the character is depicted simultaneously on two walls of the booth, which allows him to be seen in different situations. Nearby lampposts also became part of the mural – they turned into slender birches.
Valeria Solodovnikova – illustrator from Yekaterinburg, participated in various art markets and exhibitions: “2×2” NCCA, New Tretyakov Gallery.
Another Ekaterinburg artist Anastasia Moskvina on the street. Gorky, 29 created a mosaic dandelion. This is the author’s first large street mosaic. The composition is made of ceramic tiles, which the artist divided into rectangular tesserae. It took about three weeks to assemble the art object in the workshop, and then large fragments of the panel were transferred to the wall of the building.
“I like it when you can somehow describe a place concisely, and everyone understands where it is. In our city, I have not yet met large dandelions. It seems to me that there will be a memorable toponym – “Meet me at the Dandelion”,” the artist believes.
Anastasia Moskvina participated in the STENOGRAFFIA festival in 2016 in the village of Novy Port, where she helped with the realization of a sketch by another Yekaterinburg artist, Natalya Pastukhova. In the same place, Anastasia left a miniature mosaic depicting a lighthouse on the building, on the site of which there used to be a tower showing the way to the ships.
Artist from St. Petersburg Alexei Barkhan created two 16-meter murals on the street. Tolmacheva, 22. The monumental painting includes images from Greek mythology, rethought by the author.
Aleksey Barkhan was inspired by the name of the shopping center SILA VOLI, his associations with ancient heroes and gods were embodied in the sketch. The Greek hero was placed on the first ledge of the building. The second depicts characters associated with the ancient warrior: the Cretan bull, Cerberus, the apple of the Hesperides. They are transferred to the wall in a collage manner. On the wall with Hercules around the bend at the top sits a little man reading a book. So the artist depicted himself reading myths.
The artist had a difficult task to fit the huge mural into the urban space and portray all the characters so that the work could be seen from different angles.
“I used a bright, intense color scheme. I’m interested in experimenting with composition and coloring. Since there is a yellow wall nearby, I had a task so that the image does not conflict with it, but does not come off either. Lived separately, but worked well,” shared Alexey Barkhan.
Omsk artists Alexandra Khokhlova and Dmitry Ruben from the Strong Finger team presented their work on the street. Belinsky, 181. The mural is made in the style of planar stylization and is called “Botanist fan” after the name of the metro station “Botanicheskaya”.
“When we looked at the pictures, we realized that the area is a symbiosis of different buildings: four-story buildings, private owners, new buildings and nine-story buildings – such a wild mixture. We tried to play with and illustrate this diversity of the area,” the artists say.
The authors strive to fit the work into the picture of the city. To do this, paints that surround it are added to the art object. Thus, buildings of sand-orange color and blue skyscrapers find their color reflection in the mural. The work is filled with fairy-tale characters and plants that create their own story.
Strong Finger have been working as a duo since 2015. The team painted for the first time at STENOGRAFFIA in Yekaterinburg. Prior to this, Alexandra and Dmitry traveled through the cities and towns of Russia as part of the festival, transforming the gray walls of buildings along the way.
Dobrolyubova, 3, an art object “Mir”, created by residents of Yekaterinburg, appeared. The essence of the project “The City Draws Itself” is that everyone can pick up brushes and rollers and contribute to the transformation of the city. The project first took place in 2016.
The sketch for the work was created by the artist Tina Prokhorova, a participant in the 2020 festival and the author of the Take Five mural on the street. Dekabristov, 49. The drawing is a set of pictures depicting flowers in a vase, smiles, a dog with a mistress, a planet and dancing people.
“This work is a visual exploration of aspects of the surrounding and inner worlds. Is the world around a given or painstaking intellectual work? If this is work, is it collective or individual? What is the world for us, how can we achieve harmony in it, what values do we want to build our future on, what contribution can I make and how can I help others? These issues are important in achieving goals,” commented Tina Prokhorova, the author of the sketch.
The area of the art object was about 170 square meters. Artist Sergey Krasnoslobodtsev completed the work of the townspeople, adding the final touches.
The STENOGRAFFIA festival is taking place in Yekaterinburg until the end of summer, and the artists have a few objects left to complete. Previously, we talked about the works of the STENOGRAFFIA festival in 2022, read here and here. Also read how the festival was released in 3D format, and the governor of the Sverdlovsk region proposed to hold the festival outside of Yekaterinburg.
The festival is supported by the Governor of the Sverdlovsk Region, the Ministry of Culture of the Sverdlovsk Region with the assistance of the Innovative Cultural Center.

Dandelion root against cancer and cholesterol and taking care of the liver
Dandelion root against cancer and cholesterol with liver care
The dandelion has a reputation as both a wish-granter and a fearsome weed and lawn’s worst nightmare. However, did you know that dandelion root is highly nutritious and has many health benefits?
Dandelion has few calories, but a lot of fiber and vitamins K, A and C. The root is able to reduce the growth rate of cancer cells, normalize cholesterol levels, and support liver function.
In addition to being rich in vitamins and minerals, dandelion is readily available, easy to prepare, and has a pleasant aroma.
What is a dandelion?
Dandelion officinalis, or Taraxacum officinale , is a flowering plant native to Europe, Asia and North America.
As a member of the Astrov family, the dandelion is related to the dahlia, thistle, ragweed, lettuce, artichoke, and sunflower.
This plant produces several small yellow flowers that together look like a large yellow cap. When they stop blooming, a white seed head forms in their place. Over time, they are naturally blown away by the wind or by someone who wants to make a wish.
Despite being considered a weed, dandelion can come in handy in the kitchen or medicine cabinet. Both the root and leaves of this plant are very useful, they can be added to anything from tea to salads.
Like the roots of other plants. For example, burdock or ashwagandha, dandelion root has been used in traditional medicine for centuries. Thus, the first mention of dandelion as a medicinal plant dates back to 659 BC. in ancient China. It was also used by European and Arab healers. It was eaten raw or made into juice or tonic.
Dandelion has been used to treat many ailments, from bowel problems to liver health. Some Native American tribes chewed dandelion root to relieve pain, others steamed the leaves and applied them to a sore throat.
The benefits of this plant lie not only in the root. Its leaves, seeds and flowers can be used in many herbal preparations and each will have unique properties.
Health benefits
1. May fight cancer cells
Interestingly, a number of studies have shown that dandelion root may be beneficial in preventing and treating cancer.
For example, in 2011, scientists at the University of Windsor in Canada studied the effects of dandelion extract on skin cancer cells. It turned out that he begins to kill them already 48 hours after the start of treatment.
Another study from magazine « Oncotarget » says dandelion root extract can kill 95% of colon cancer cells within two days.
Another work found that the root could be included in the treatment of leukemia, pancreatic, breast and prostate cancer.
2. Lowers cholesterol
High cholesterol is one of the main causes of coronary heart disease. This substance can be deposited in the blood vessels, causing them to become narrower and blood flow to slow down.
Proper nutrition is one of the easiest ways to prevent high cholesterol levels. By limiting processed foods and adding more fruits and vegetables, you can lower your cholesterol.
Dandelion root can also help with this. In one animal experiment, rabbits were fed high-cholesterol foods supplemented with dandelion root. As a result, this plant has been shown to lower total cholesterol, triglycerides, and bad LDL cholesterol levels, while beneficial HDL cholesterol levels have increased.
Dandelion root
3. Rich in antioxidants
Free radicals are compounds that appear in the body as a result of stress, poor environment or malnutrition. Over time, their spread can lead to cell damage and the development of chronic diseases. Antioxidants can neutralize these harmful compounds and reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer.
Studies have shown that dandelion root is rich in antioxidants, which indicates its potential “usefulness” in the fight against cancer.
4. Supports liver health
The liver performs many important functions in the body, from filtering toxins to absorbing drugs. Dandelion root not only protects this organ, but also helps it work effectively.
A study by the Department of Nutrition at Chonnam National University in South Korea found that extract Taraxacum officinale prevents liver damage that alcohol intoxication can cause.
These protective properties are due to the antioxidants present in dandelion root.
5. Fights bacteria
Among many other benefits, dandelion root also has an antimicrobial effect and is able to stop the growth of pathogenic bacteria.
A study by Irish scientists published in the journal « Phytotherapy Research » has shown that dandelion root is particularly effective against bacterial strains that cause staph infections and foodborne illness.
Despite the need for a more thorough study of this issue, it can already be assumed that dandelion root can be used as an effective natural remedy against bacterial infections.
6. Strengthens bones
Dandelion officinalis is a rich source of vitamin K, an important nutrient that plays an essential role in maintaining bone health. This vitamin increases the level of a certain type of protein needed for strong bones. Therefore, its deficiency often leads to fractures and a decrease in bone density.
Dandelion also contains calcium, which is involved in the formation and strengthening of bones and teeth. According to a paper that appeared in the journal « The Proceedings of the Nutrition Society » , about 99% of the calcium in the body is concentrated in the bones.
7. Improves skin condition
Each serving of dandelion contains an impressive amount of antioxidants that protect the skin from the first signs of aging and give it a healthy and radiant look.
What’s more, a in vitro (in vitro) analysis conducted in Canada showed that dandelion extract protects skin cells from harmful UV rays.
Some studies have also shown that dandelion has a powerful antimicrobial effect that blocks the growth of bacteria and prevents the spread of skin infections.
8. Rich in fiber
Dandelion root contains a lot of fiber. Basically, it is a type of soluble fiber called inulin.
Fiber has many properties. In particular, it regulates blood sugar levels. Moving through the gastrointestinal tract, fiber slows down the absorption of sugar, which helps to reduce its level.
In addition, fiber protects the body from a variety of digestive problems, including constipation, hemorrhoids, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and stomach ulcers.
Beneficial features
Dosage and methods of administration
Dandelion can be found both in the pharmacy and in the garden. It is safest, of course, to collect it on your own lawn, which is not treated with pesticides and other chemicals. But don’t forget to wash it thoroughly.
When digging up a root, be sure to pull out as many adventitious roots as possible. Rinse it before use to get rid of dirt.
Dandelion flowers can be used to make wine or jam, and the leaves can be added to soup, salad, or even pasta.
There are many recipes for the root, but most prefer to make tea or coffee from it.
Tea can be made in many different ways. The easiest way is to pour boiling water over the root and let it brew for 5-10 minutes, then strain. And to make coffee, the root should first be dried in the oven for 10-15 minutes at a temperature of 180ºС.
Both tea and coffee made from dandelion root are natural caffeine-free beverages that will help you start your day right. In addition, tea retains all the beneficial properties of this plant, which means it is not only tasty, but also a very healthy drink for every day.
Tablets and liquid extract of the root can be found in almost any pharmacy. When looking for a nutritional supplement, pay attention to its brand and the absence of unnecessary ingredients and additives.
Although there is no officially recommended dosage, the instructions on most packages suggest consuming 500 to 1500 mg of the root per day. We advise you to start small and find your optimal dose, taking into account individual tolerance and avoiding side effects.
Side effects and drug interactions
For most healthy adults, eating dandelion is a safe and effective way to improve their health. However, it should be borne in mind that there are still some risks.
First of all, both external and internal use of this plant can give a skin allergic reaction. If you have a sensitivity to any plant in the Asteraceae family, such as ragweed, daisy, or thistle, then dandelion can also cause irritation.
If you develop swelling, redness, or itching, immediately stop using dandelion or products containing it and consult a doctor.
Since dandelion is rich in vitamin K, it can affect blood clotting. If you are taking Warfarin or another anticoagulant, you need to monitor your vitamin K intake to avoid unwanted interactions with this drug.
If you suffer from diabetes or liver or kidney disease, we would recommend that you consult a specialist before consuming dandelion or making any major dietary changes.
Finding a daycare or preschool that is a good fit for a child with Autism can be especially challenging to parents. LV Autism Guide has gathered a list of some centers who have accommodated other parents in the past. However, it’s important to ask the right questions and make sure it’s a good fit for your child’s individual needs. Ask if they allow TSS’s there. This is the time that many parents and therapists work on modifying behavior, building foundation skills for later learning and play. Visit the day care/preschool with your child and watch your child’s reaction, how the employees relate to your child and be candid about your child’s needs. Click on the following link to read more about how to find the right child care.
As you search for services, it’s a good idea to compile a care binder or folder with his/her healthcare needs.
Having issues with your preschool? Start an Early Intervention Complaint Form. It’s a form that parents can complete to request a formal complaint through the Bureau of Early Intervention Services.
Between toddler age and preschool, the Early Start Denver Model is the time frame this therapy is implemented. Click on https://www.esdm.co/ to learn more about this therapy.

Pennsylvania Pre-K Counts funding is awarded on a competitive basis every five years (or when any additional funding is included in the state budget). A competitive Request for Application (RFA) process is anticipated to be released in Spring 2018. Announcements of the competitive RFA will be communicated through Penn Link, and through the PA Early Ed News (click here to subscribe) as soon as it becomes available.
As part of OCDEL’s commitment to continuous quality improvement in early learning, child care programs participating in Keystone STARS at the STAR 2 level or above will receive a subsidy add-on for every child they serve who is enrolled in Child Care Works.
This subsidy add-on, or “tiered reimbursement,” is applicable to centers at the STAR 2 level or higher, and increases with each STAR level. The add-on is automatically applied to the daily subsidized child care rate for the program by the CCIS. The additional daily amount may, in some circumstances, increase provider rates to an amount that exceeds the Maximum Child Care Allowance.
Head Start Supplemental Assistance Program (HSSAP) funding is awarded on a competitive basis every five years (or when any additional funding is included in the state budget). The next competitive Request for Application (RFA) process is anticipated to be released in Spring 2023.

Inclusive children’s center – Anton is right here
Inclusive Children’s Center is a space for children with special needs and their neurotypical peers, where every day they can learn together, get ready for school and make friends. Classes are held every day, and families receive help for free – this is the first inclusive center in St. Petersburg that will operate on a non-profit basis. Qualified specialists work with children: tutors, speech therapists, music teachers, art teachers, English teachers, sensory integration specialists.
We have been preparing for a long time to create a children’s project, because at some point it became obvious: we want to provide systemic assistance. To work not only with people with autism, but with their families, to train competent specialists so that high-quality diagnostics are available to every family that is faced with a diagnosis of autism.
“Now we understand that it is possible to build a support system for people with autism in Russia only by working in an integrated manner: with children, teenagers, and adults. At an early age, assistance is most effective, but there is almost nothing for children: no high-quality diagnostics, no inclusive programs in kindergartens, no specialists. If a child with autism spends his childhood in isolation, then he is more likely to spend his whole life in isolation. We want to change that.”0010,” said Elena Filbert, executive director of the fund.

Full-time tutors, speech therapists, music educators, art teachers, teachers of English work in the children’s center. Now we are already helping 46 children, 142 children are on the waiting list. The inclusive group consists of 75% of children without developmental features, neurotypical, and 25% of children with autism and children with Down syndrome.
“ Our center is not a “garden for children with autism”. We have neurotypical children, children with autism, children with speech disabilities, and they are all in the same group. An individual program is prescribed for each child, based on the observations of educators and diagnostics of specialists. And every child with autism has his own personal trained tutor who helps him develop according to certain programs,” Elena Filbert.
At the opening of the center in March 2021, the ribbon was cut by Ekaterina Shulman, a political scientist and an old friend of our foundation: “The diversity of societies will increase. And those children who grew up with the feeling “I’m normal and everyone is like me” will have difficulties in this new world. Diversity is the new normal and uniformity is the exception. “Anton is here nearby” is a foundation whose ideology from the very beginning was adaptation to social life, training those skills that will help them become part of society, work, do something that is sold for money, and not admiring features. I like the consistency of their approach, humanism, focus on the individual and their freedom, the possibility of choice. People who were previously considered inferior, in recognition of their humanity, grow and develop.
Not only children, but also parents and specialists can get help in the children’s center. Training courses and master classes will be held for them.

Autism in the city: children with ASD and gray areas
In 2020, the Anton Is Here Foundation decided to conduct a study to understand how the city interacts with children with autism and their families. In which kindergartens and schools can children study? Where can families go for medical help? Where can children spend their leisure time, and where can parents find like-minded people?
This is how the Autism in the City project was born. First of all, it was decided to explore, of course, St. Petersburg.
In the fall of 2020, St. Petersburg was a gray area for us, where separate places were hidden, already then ready to provide assistance and support to children with ASD and their families. But there are few such places. Often, before being in the “right” place, to find “their” specialist, families go a long way – an obstacle course.
If the legislative framework is not related to local practice, and the statistics on ASD in the city are silent, it remains to go to those who work every day in the education system, in medicine, in social assistance, to parents who (as it happens) often become experts in helping and supporting their children. This is what our team of researchers did. And we share the results.
Hello, my name is Toma, and also in this text are my colleagues: Katya, Masha and Diana. Together, we conducted a sociological study for six months for the Anton Is Right Here Foundation: from September to February, we were looking for what opportunities children with autism have in St. Petersburg. The possibilities are very different: from medicine and education to understanding and acceptance. Today we are starting a series of publications in which we will tell you what we managed to find. A cycle, because there were a lot of finds, and even more questions that we faced.
The study is the foundation’s attempt to understand what is happening in St. Petersburg when various social and “helping” institutions are faced with autism in children. We are talking about the social side of interaction: who makes the diagnosis, how the educational route is determined in the preschool and school period, with whom parents interact, and why the search for a kindergarten, school and doctors is an obstacle course for them .
Unfortunately, today parents of children with autism take a lot of time to find answers to such simple questions as “which kindergarten to go to” or “where to get a tooth fixed”.
Unfortunately, today parents of children with autism take a lot of time to find answers to such simple questions as “which kindergarten to go to” or “where to get a tooth fixed”.
Of course, there are places and specialists on the city map who are ready to provide various kinds of assistance to the family of a child with autism. But such places are few; sometimes the path to them is long, expensive and difficult. In the study, we sought to cover a wide urban context, to understand how the “system” of care for children with autism works from the inside, because almost every family of children with ASD inevitably goes through it.
The results we have obtained are based on two phases of work. Firstly, it is the search and calling of institutions. This stage helped us outline the field of research and find the first heroes for the interview. Later, we called medical, psychological, leisure and educational institutions. We were interested in what kind of help they can offer children with autism. This is how we created the “Help Map” – places ready to provide support to families with children with ASD. We will share it very soon.
The second stage of work is an interview. We talked with heads of state kindergartens, with parents of children with autism, interviewed tutors who accompany children with ASD in kindergarten and school, employees of correctional schools and resource classes, and also representatives of territorial psychological, medical and pedagogical commissions (TPMPK) – after all, the path of parents of children with ASD to kindergarten and schools often begins with them – and RONO. The result of this stage is a description of the route of parents of children with autism: from early diagnosis to elementary school. So we managed to expand the field of stories about autism in the city and include different characters in them. We will see how the problem of lack of language arises all the way through diagnostics, medicine, education, growing into adulthood, and “these children” become “these adults.”
We will see how the problem of lack of language arises all the way through diagnostics, medicine, education, growing into adulthood, and “these children” become “these adults.”
THESE CHILDREN
But before families of children with autism encounter diagnostics, medicine, and education, we all – the foundation, parents, kindergarten directors, school teachers, doctors – encounter language. More precisely, with its absence. Children with autism are called as soon as they are called: from diminutive “auty” to “sick” (“abnormal”). But more often they still don’t name, multiplying the uncertainty and reproducing the lack of information, limiting themselves to “these children”, at the same time looking into the interlocutor’s eyes as if saying: “everyone understands everything, do you understand too?”. And, if for researchers the lack of language is a methodological difficulty that we are used to working with, then for the problems of autism in St. Petersburg, this is the essence – do not name, skip, pretend that they do not exist.
But there are children with autism! They are only seen – with words, eyes and knowledge – not everywhere. Even those who understand the problem are not always ready to take the position of linguistic appearance, speaking bluntly and pity. And until the language is developed, the struggle for “visibility” goes on all fronts: between autism as a dysfunction and as part of the discourse about neurodiversity.
IN GRAY AREAS
At different stages, families of children with autism in St. Petersburg face gray areas. First, diagnostics. Often this is a denial of autism as a diagnosis, ignorance of diagnostic tools, or untimely help. Then there are kindergartens and schools, which are not always ready to work with autism. Sometimes unpreparedness is expressed in transfer to “other” kindergartens, and in some cases, successful examples of inclusion are formed in kindergartens and schools. And we don’t know exactly why this happens. The search for specialists also runs like a red thread: it is not possible to find “one’s own” immediately. The scale of uncertainty forces parents to be in constant search or to agree to “what they give.” And there are so few adequate places that getting there is not a trivial task.
The scale of uncertainty forces parents to be in constant search or to agree to “what they give.” And there are so few adequate places that getting there is not a trivial task.
The regulatory and legal framework, which formally advocates an inclusive model of education, adds uncertainty – all children can study everywhere. But this is only formal! In fact, the normative documents are divorced from the reality of autism. How to be the head of a kindergarten if a child with ASD in the preschool period needs behavioral therapy or a tutor, but there are no rates for specialists? What if there is a diagnosis, but not the same one, but specialists see that “this is it”? This is not written anywhere. When “encountered” with autism in kindergartens and schools, informal mechanisms are launched that lead to really different consequences: from successful inclusion and socialization to homeschooling and isolation.
When “encountered” with autism in kindergartens and schools, informal mechanisms are launched that lead to really different consequences: from successful inclusion and socialization to homeschooling and isolation.
More than once in our interviews the “Leningrad school of psychiatry” is mentioned, some representatives of which speak of overdiagnosis, and of autism as a fashion trend: “it will soon pass.” But an adequate diagnosis is important because it is the key to help. Autism and autism care in St. Petersburg are on different banks – a bridge is needed. While he is gone, you have to use bypass paths or go the wrong way.
WHAT’S NEXT?
72% of public kindergartens in several districts have no experience of “meeting” children with ASD, whether diagnosed or not.

I love tutor time — thank you for always making us feel loved and welcomed. My son is almost potty trained because of his teachers, and his vocabulary is out of this world. As someone who was new to area, I had only my intuition to rely on as I checked out childcare centers in the area prior to enrolling my daughter for VPK. The teachers at the school have a genuine love for the children! My daughter, who has always been shy, blossomed socially under the love and guidance she received at Tutor Time. I felt like a valued member of my daughter’s educational team. I was
…
always greeted with a warm, sincere, greeting. She’s excited and well-prepared to move on to kindergarten, but has said numerous times that she’s going to miss her teachers at Tutor Time.
