Even on Your Worst Day You Can Be Your Student’s Best Hope by Manny Scott
This terrific book reminds us all of the power every teacher has to help traumatized young people cope with the unhappy circumstances of their lives. The author shares the little things a teacher can do to make a difference, and he offers advice for bridging cultural divides, earning students’ trust, and equipping them to take responsibility for their own success. You can find this book on amazon at Even on Your Worst Day.
Why We Teach by Sonia Nieto
Why do we teach? Author Sonia Nieto, herself a distinguished teacher, has gathered the insights and inspirations of both veteran and neophyte K–12 classroom teachers as they describe how and why they find purpose and value in their work. You can find this fascinating book on amazon at Why We Teach.
I’d Like to Apologize to Every Teacher I Ever Had: My Year as a Rookie Teacher at Northeast High by Tony Danza
Having already earned his degree in history and a teaching credential, popular actor Tony Danza accepted a real-life position as a first-year teacher in a Philadelphia inner-city school. This book details his experiences there. Danza gives an insider’s perspective on funding cuts, high-stakes testing, high absenteeism, student apathy, and lack of parental involvement. He hits the nail on the head with every chapter. For more, read my post Teacher and Actor Tony Danza. You can also buy the book on amazon at I’d Like to Apologize to Every Teacher I Ever Had.
Beyond the Blackboard by Stacy Bess
Stacey Bess of Salt Lake City, Utah, landed her first teaching job in a classroom in a homeless shelter. Her students wrestled with unstable housing, domestic abuse, poverty, and alcohol and drug-abusing parents. Read how this remarkable teacher created a safe, loving classroom environment and how she battled the local school board for a better classroom space and more resources. Find out more in my blog post Teaching in the School with No Name or buy her book, Beyond the Blackboard, available through amazon.com.
Sugarcane Academy: How a New Orleans Teacher and His Storm-Struck Students Created a School to Remember by Michael Tisserand
When Hurricane Katrina forced thousands to flee their homes, New Orleans residents were more concerned about survival than school. But when a group of evacuee parents realized they would not be returning home soon, they had to find a way to help their kids go back to school. They pooled their resources and hired their New Orleans teacher, a fellow refugee, to establish a school. This teacher’s story furnishes valuable lessons for dealing with nature’s fury. For more, read my post Hurricane Harvey Reminds Us of Hurricane Katrina. You can also find the book on amazon.com at Sugarcane Academy: How a New Orleans Teacher and His Storm-Struck Students Created a School to Remember.
Jaime Escalante: The Best Teacher in America by Jay Mathews
He was one of the most famous educators of the late 20th century, but Jaime Escalante is already fading from cultural memory. Superbly portrayed by actor Edward James Olmos in the 1988 movie Stand and Deliver, this talented educator challenged supposedly “unteachable” inner-city Latino students to achieve beyond a level anyone thought them capable of. You can read more about him in my post Jaime Escalante. In addition, I devoted a chapter to him in my book Chalkboard Champions. Also, his well-researched and well-written biography can be found in Jaime Escalante: The Best Teacher in America. Unfortunately, the book is currently out of print, but used copies can be found on amazon and at many libraries.
Last Letters from Attu: The True Story of Etta Jones: Alaska Pioneer and Japanese POW by Mary Breu
Etta Schureman was over 40 years old when she ventured into Alaska Territory to teach in primitive rural schools. There Etta met the love of her life, married, and settled permanently. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1942, the Aleutian island where her school was located was invaded by Japanese troops. Although Etta and her husband were in their sixties, the soldiers brutally killed the husband, and then incarcerated Etta in Japan as a prisoner of war. You can read more about Etta’s intriguing tale of survival on my post Etta Jones, or buy Mary Breu’s engaging book on amazon by clicking on Last Letters from Attu.
A Journal for Christa: Christa McAuliffe, Teacher in Space by Grace George Corrigan
My post Remembering Christa McAuliffe describes a gifted high school history teacher from New Hampshire who was selected to be the first teacher in space. As part of her space mission, Christa planned to write a journal of her experiences from the perspective that even an ordinary citizen can make history. Tragically, Christa was killed along with the entire shuttle crew when the space shuttle Challenger exploded shortly after lift-off on January 28, 1986. The journal she never got to finish was replaced by A Journal for Christa written by her grief-stricken mother. The book is a tribute to an extraordinary teacher. A Journal for Christa can be ordered from amazon.
Radical Equations: Civil Rights from Mississippi to the Algebra Project by Robert Parris Moses
New York City math teacher Robert Moses was a legendary figure during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960’s. Nearly 40 years later, Moses advocates for yet another transformational change: the Algebra Project. His innovative programs have helped to overcome the achievement gap. Read more about this remarkable educator in my post Bob Moses. I have also included a chapter about him in my book Chalkboard Heroes, or you can buy his book, Radical Equations, on amazon.
Sister to the Sioux: The Memoirs of Elaine Goodale Eastman (1863-1953) by Elaine Goodale Eastman
This autobiography by an inspirational New England school teacher describes how she went to South Dakota to establish a day school for Sioux Indians on their reservation. Firmly believing that Native American children should not be separated from their parents and their village elders, Elaine established her school an alternative to Indian boarding schools. While in South Dakota, Elaine witnessed the infamous Wounded Knee Massacre. With her fiance, Dr. Charles “Ohiyesa” Eastman, himself a Sioux, the couple nursed the injured survivors back to health. This is a really great story. You can read more about her on my post, Elaine Goodale Eastman, read the chapter about her in my book, Chalkboard Champions, or buy her book on amazon. com at Sister to the Sioux: The Memoirs of Elaine Goodale Eastman.
The Freedom Writers Diary by Erin Gruwell, the book and the movie
Just about everyone has heard of the best-selling book The Freedom Writers Diary, written by teacher Erin Gruwell and her class of inner-city at-risk students. This collection of student experiences zeroes in on some of the challenges our kids face when they are not in school, and how much a caring and dedicated teacher can help them overcome those challenges. Read more on my post Erin Gruwell. If you want to buy the book, The Freedom Writers Diary is easy to find on amazon and at just about any brick-and-mortar bookstore.
Tisha:The Story of a Young Teacher in the Alaska Wilderness by Robert Specht
I absolutely loved this action-packed true story about a young teacher, Anne Hobbs, who travelled to the Alaskan wilderness in the 1920’s to teach in a frontier school. As much an adventure story and a romance as it is a chronicle of early Alaskan history, this tale will keep you on the edge of your seat. Don’t miss it! Read more on my blog post Tisha, or order the book Tisha on amazon.

Extendable chalkboard for chalkboard
YC980D touch screen smart whiteboard is a new replacement for interactive whiteboard. Compared to an interactive whiteboard, the interactive flat panel reduces the cost and time of calibrating, replacing projector bulbs, and cleaning filters. Class downtime and waiting times are also kept to a minimum, with no unexpected lamp burnouts or waiting for lamp replacements. The interactive flat panel consumes less power, takes up less space, and is easier to install and maintain. YC980D inch interactive displays are designed for education and business. Educational interactive displays bring both more clarity and more enthusiasm to the classroom. The touch screen eliminates shadows cast when approaching the projector and saves those at the front of the room from the blinding light of the projector. What is an NAEYC Accredited Preschool?
News, Riverside
As a parent, you want to find the right preschool program for your little one—a preschool in which your child will thrive. But with the amount of preschools out there, determining which programs offer the quality you’re seeking can be overwhelming. What should you look for when trying to find the best preschool?
One thing you may hear education experts talk about is NAEYC accreditation. NAEYC accredited preschool can offer your child the right start in his school career. But just what does it mean? Read on, as we break down the definition of an NAEYC accredited preschool and where you can find one that will inspire your tike to love education right from the start.
What Defines a NAEYC Accredited Preschool
First, let’s explain the acronym. NAEYC stands for National Association for the Education of Young Children. Further, “accredited” means that a school has met a certain level of standards and quality. NAEYC accreditation is something to look for as you weigh your preschool options. NAEYC is important because it can help parents make an educated (pun intended!) decision on a day care, preschool, or kindergarten program. For more than 20 years now, families have relied on this accreditation to ensure the quality of education and care provided in programs for their little learners.
Preschools that earn NAEYC accreditation must first meet 10 standards for early childhood education. These standards include:
- Promote positive relationships for all kids and adults to encourage each child’s sense of individual worth.
- Incorporate a curriculum that fosters all areas of child development: cognitive, emotional, language, physical, and social.
- Use culturally, developmentally, and linguistically appropriate and effective language in teaching.
- Provide ongoing assessments of each child’s development and relay children’s progress to the family.
- Promote the nutrition and health of children and protect students and staff from illness and injury.
- Maintain a teaching staff that has the educational qualifications, skills, knowledge, and professional commitment needed to foster children’s learning and to support families’ various interest and needs.
- Establish and uphold collaborative relationships with students’ families.
- Form relationships with the community (and use their resources) to support the academic achievement of program goals.
- Offer a safe and healthy physical environment.
- Incorporate strong personnel, fiscal, and program management policies so that all students, students’ families, and staff have positive experiences.
As these standards suggest, NAEYC accredited preschools demonstrate that they can offer a safe and healthy learning environment for children, have well-trained teachers, have access to quality teaching materials, and work with a curriculum that is appropriately challenging.
Reaching Accreditation
Early childhood education programs that are accredited by the NAEYC are proud to say they have this title, because they know how much work it takes to reach that achievement. Using the NAEYC tools and materials, they are consistently elevating their programs and offering the best possible educational opportunities for young children. And just how exactly do they earn that accreditation status?
After a thorough application process, skilled and reliable NAEYC program assessors visit each facility to decide whether it is meeting NAEYC standards. After the accreditation is granted, all programs are subject to random, unannounced visits to ensure the quality continues to meet these standards.
Finding an NAEYC Accredited Preschool in Connecticut
Now that you know the standards and requirements to earn that coveted NAEYC status, you know what to look for in a program for your little one. Riverside Magnet School offers a NAEYC accredited preschool program for young children in the Greater Hartford area. This program includes certified teachers and a full day curriculum.
Not only is Riverside Magnet School a NAEYC accredited school, it is also a Reggio Emilio inspired program. This means that:
- Project work is child-directed
- Teachers incorporate drama, art, and other teaching techniques to reach each child’s individual style of learning
- There is a focus on collaboration
- Teachers play the role of researcher, guiding learning through careful listening, observation, and engagement
- A variety of senses and exploration are utilized in the learning process
- The environment plays the role as third teacher
This approach to early childhood education offers many benefits for students and their families, primarily in that it fosters a love for learning early on in life. With a school that offers this kind of personalized and focused education for each individual child and has that high-quality NAEYC accreditation, it can make the overwhelming decision of finding a preschool program just a little bit easier on parents.

What is NAEYC? In-Depth Guide
What is NAEYC Accreditation?
Finding a quality early childhood program for your child can be overwhelming. Will my child be safe? Will they like it? What’s the student to teacher ratio? Keeping your eye out for programs with a NAEYC accreditation can help steer you in the right direction.
First, what is NAEYC? The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) is the largest nonprofit organization that represents early childhood educators, families of young children, policymakers, and advocates in the United States.
Second, who founded the NAEYC? The NAEYC was first created by Patty Smith Hill out of the concern over the quality of the various nursery schools that were being established in the 1920s.
In 1985, NAEYC began their accreditation process, serving as an essential tool that families across the United States have relied on to find high-quality early childhood education for their young children. All NAEYC-accredited child care facilities share the belief that your children’s high-quality experiences at home, in child care, and at school are fundamental for school readiness, academic success, and future adult achievement.
What is NAEYC and why is it important?
Finding a NAEYC accredited program can help parents find the highest quality early childhood experiences for their children. NAEYC is focused on promoting high-quality learning by supporting the rights and needs of children through high-quality educational services. Accredited programs have demonstrated that they provide a safe and healthy environment for children, have highly qualified and well trained teachers , excellent teaching materials, and a curriculum that is appropriately challenging and developmentally sound. A NAEYC accredited program has all of the resources necessary, for both families and teachers alike, to allow children to thrive in an enriching environment dedicated to helping them reach their potential.
How can they guarantee these elements crucial to your child’s success? The 10 standards of excellence.
10 NAEYC Standards of Excellence
NAEYC promotes high-quality learning by connecting practice, policy, and research dedicated to ten different standards of excellence. These principles lay the foundation of NAEYC and professional standards and are the prerequisites to accreditation.
- Relationships: Promote positive relationships between all children and adults to encourage each person’s sense of individual worth.
- Curriculum: Implement a curriculum that fosters all areas of child development: cognitive, emotional, language, physical, and social.
- Teaching: Use developmentally, culturally, and linguistically appropriate and effective teaching approaches.
- Assessment of Child Progress: Provide ongoing assessments of each child’s learning and development and communicate the child’s progress to the family.
- Health: Promote the nutrition and health of children and protect children and staff from illness and injury.
- Staff Competencies, Preparation, and Support: Employ and support a teaching staff that has the early childhood educational qualifications, knowledge, and professional commitment necessary to promote children’s learning and development and to support families’ diverse interests and needs.
- Families: Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with each child’s family.
- Community Relationships: Establish relationships with and use the resources of the community to support the achievement of program goals.
- Physical Environment: Provide safe, healthy, and well-maintained indoor and outdoor physical environments.
- Leadership and Management: Implement strong personnel, fiscal, and program management policies so that all children, families, and staff have high-quality experiences.
NAEYC Accreditation: No Small Feat
Through its prestigious review process, the National Association for the Education of Young Children ensures quality early childhood experiences. Of the more than 130,000 child care centers operating in the United States, only around 7,000 (~5%) child care centers are NAEYC-accredited. By earning accreditation, schools become leaders in a national effort to raise the quality of early childhood education, and to help give all children a better start.
NAEYC accreditation requires a long-term commitment to meeting strict quality standards based on the ten standards of excellence. Schools undergo an intensive process that involves rigorous self-assessment, documenting evidence of adherence to the 10 standards of excellence, and a formal evaluation by a NAEYC representative. Early childhood educators, parents, and administrators are justifiably proud of completing the process and earning accreditation. Once achieved, accreditation is not permanent. Accreditation is maintained to continuously ensure that the center’s environment, policies, and practices are aligned with the most up-to-date NAEYC standards.
“We’re proud to be accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, and recognized for our commitment to reaching the highest professional standards among early childhood programs.”
NAEYC Accreditation at Kids’ Care Club
“We’re proud to be accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, and recognized for our commitment to reaching the highest professional standards among early childhood programs,” says Trudy Khodabande, owner of Kids’ Care Club Child Development Centers. “NAEYC accreditation lets families in our community know that children in our programs are getting the highest-quality care and early education experiences. ”
When parents choose a NAEYC-accredited school, they can be sure that they have selected the highest quality education for their children. Kids’ Care Club has two accredited locations in 4S Ranch and Rancho Penasquitos, serving the North County communities of San Diego. At Kids’ Care Club, parents and teachers know that “Early Years are Learning Years!”
Linscott Laurie. “The main task of a teacher is to promote the development of a child”
– Laurie, how is preschool education organized in the USA?
– Early childhood education in the United States is provided in preschools – nurseries, kindergartens, toddler and preschool centers – public and private institutions for toddlers and kindergarten children. In general, the principles of organizing preschool education in different states can vary significantly.
I can tell you more about the early childhood education system in Michigan. Michigan, like many other states in the United States, relies on a rating system for assessing the quality of early childhood education in organizing preschool education. Using this system, it is possible to provide quality education for young children in childcare facilities, using various tools.
Thus, in some institutions, a rating scale for assessing the educational environment in the field of early childhood may be used, in others, a quality assessment program. When parents choose the right education and upbringing for their child, they consider childcare facilities, taking into account their ratings. In part, a high rating depends on the educational environment and materials in this center, but it must be assumed that the most important component is the level of education of the teaching staff, whether the teacher, whether male or female, has education in the direction of teaching and educating preschool children.
– What education is required for child care educators in the US?
– There are no rigid standards in this matter. There are differences related to territorial features, as well as to the programs used in children’s institutions. For example, the Head Start program, which targets children from low-income families, assumes that all leading educators will eventually have a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education and education.
The State of Michigan has developed a 4-year-old program that requires a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education and education.
If we are talking about private centers, then the differences depend on the level of education to which this center is oriented. For example, in some private centers even a teaching assistant may have a higher education diploma. Accordingly, centers where teachers have a bachelor’s degree have a higher rating than those centers that, for example, invite university students to work.
– At what age do children start attending kindergartens?
– Some parents go to work when the child is only three months old, others wait until the child is one year old. Therefore, the centers offer programs for different ages, starting from infancy. In our center there is an opportunity to accept children from a very early age.
As a rule, in the US, before elementary school, children starting at age 4 (that is, they must be 5 years old by September 1) have the right to attend the preparatory department. It is part of the school’s general education system and is not compulsory.
– Do you have any requirements for group size?
– Their size also varies from state to state. We are accredited by NAEYC (National Association for Early Childhood Education and Education), which has group size guidelines.
NAEYC requires eight children in a nursery (0-15 months) with three teachers.
In the group for children from 12 to 18 months – 12 children and also three teachers. For a group of 18 children aged 3 years, two teachers are required, and for a group of 20 four-year-old children, also two teachers.
Because our lab provides training for students who come to us for internships, there are often more teachers in the groups than the NAEYC mandates.
– Lori, what does the Child Development Lab you run do?
– Michigan Child Development Laboratories was established in 1927. They were originally intended for women who were studying home economics. At one time, the development and upbringing of children fell under this category. Laboratories constantly developed, expanded the scope of activities. Using scientific research and theory, these organizations have grown professionally, developing a practical side.
We currently have two centers. East Lansing mainly accepts children on a full day basis. It was created for families in which parents work and their children need supervision and education. The center has a group for infants (0-12 months), toddlers, two groups for children one to three years old, and one group each for children three and four years old.
Another center, Hazlett, is running a Head Start program. It is housed in a public school building where we work with Head Start funded children and several Michigan funded groups of 4 year olds. Some parents pay for their children’s education themselves.
It should also be said that some children need special education, and they, accordingly, receive in our center the education that they need.
Our educational program is based on a playful approach. We believe that children learn through play, so we plan their activities in such a way as to include learning in the play environment.
– What is the optimal group size with an inclusive component?
– There is no single answer to this question. It all depends on the specific situation. For example, at the Hazlett Center, there were four children with special needs in a group of 18. For a long time in practice, we tried to determine the correct ratio – the “magic number”, but to no avail, most often it depends on the children and how they present themselves. Sometimes it’s great to interact with a lot of kids, but sometimes the technology doesn’t work. Therefore, there is no “magic number”.
– Tell us about the inclusive model developed at your center.
– Based on research on helping children with special needs, we have developed an educational model. For example, if a three-year-old child with a speech delay is in a group of children with similar problems, then these children will be a speech model for him.
And if a child with a speech delay is in a group with children who do not have problems with the development of speech, then he hears how other children talk, communicate with each other, this motivates him to interact, he has a desire to play with them. Therefore, we “intersperse” therapy directly into the group.
The speech therapist observes how and where the child plays and supports the development of the child’s speech
in an inclusive educational environment.
The same thing happens if children with a delay in the development of gross motor skills need physical therapy and exercise therapy, the therapist comes to the group or playground and works with the child in the environment familiar to him.
This fall, we plan to launch a new program, an inclusive model for children with autism, which will be rolled out at both centers.
Research shows, and evidence suggests, that applied behavioral analysis and techniques help children with autism learn.
Children aged 3-4 will spend half a day one-on-one with a behavioral analyst. They will spend the afternoons in a group with other children of their age in an inclusive educational environment. In doing so, we will conduct research on this model and observe how it contributes to the development of children.
– What do you think are the biggest benefits of inclusive education?
– If we turn to the results of scientific research, we can find out not only what advantages children with developmental disabilities have if they are engaged in inclusive groups, but also how inclusive groups are useful for ordinary children.
So, if children have a lag in the development of speech, then when communicating in an inclusive group with other children, they have a strong motivation to communicate with their peers, developing, of course, at the same time speech.
Children with developmental delays have the opportunity to practice being part of a group. And children without developmental disabilities are given the opportunity to learn to accept other people who are somewhat different from them, they learn empathy.
– How is the day organized in kindergarten?
– During the day the children get together several times. Usually, at the beginning of the day, the teacher tells the children what activities, classes, games are supposed to be held that day, and the children have a choice. If the children go for a walk, then all together, but who will do what on the street, they choose for themselves. Our children’s center has a garden where children love to spend time and can observe the whole life cycle of plants, and, of course, participate in the process of planting, watering, caring for plants, harvesting. Children enjoy tasting the fruits of their labor and deciding which plants they will plant next season. In the process of work, we observe that children participate in gardening activities in different ways: some just like to walk, some like to watch plants, some take care of them, etc.
– There is a lot of talk these days about the declining interest of children in reading. Do you have such a problem?
– All our children, especially two-year-olds, are very fond of being read to, they often bring a book with a request to read to them. In my opinion, this is the answer to the question: how to teach children to love reading – they need to read a lot. Interestingly, children have favorite books that they can endlessly ask to read.
– At what age do children begin to read on their own?
– According to research in Michigan, children begin to read at about the age of five. In my opinion, this is quite early, and perhaps some aspects of development important for this age are being missed. Previously, most children began to read at the age of 6-7 years.
– What kind of books are children reading now? Who is their favorite author?
– At an early age, children are very fond of books with large pictures and recognizable objects, then, when reading skills improve, they love to read stories. One of the favorite authors of American preschoolers is Eric Litwin. Perhaps this is also due to the fact that there are songs for his books, and children listen and sing with pleasure.
– Do children abuse the use of various gadgets in kindergarten?
– We do not allow children to bring any gadgets. Yes, and teachers are trying to reasonably use modern technical means.
– Do you have any special materials for children with special needs in your groups?
– We do not have special materials, but for example, for three-year-old children with delayed motor development, we provide free surrounding space. Let’s suppose children are putting together puzzles, we do not forget that children have problems with their hands, and we make sure that children can take puzzles, i.e. so that the size of individual puzzles is convenient for all children. If we are engaged in drawing, then it is important to observe the progress of skills in special children, to ensure that the brushes are of the appropriate convenient size. Everyone is individual, it is important that the group always has material that all children can use.
– Can children bring toys?
– Yes, they can, but there are certain rules. We tell the children that if they bring a toy to the group, then other children can touch their toy, see. They do not always remember this later, then the teacher helps the children to agree among themselves.
– How does the State Department of Education evaluate the quality of early childhood education?
– The Michigan Department of Education has developed quality standards for education and upbringing for children from 0 to 3 years old, a separate quality standard for preschoolers has been developed. There is now much discussion about better harmonization of quality standards for preschoolers and for primary school, as parents want preschool teachers to prepare their children for primary school. There is a draft document from which teachers of children’s institutions will be able to understand what is expected from them, from their pupils, teachers of the primary school.
– What is the attitude of parents towards inclusive education?
– When ten years ago we began to apply the inclusive model of education at the Hazlett Center, parents of children with developmental disabilities were concerned that in large groups their children would lack attention, the children would be left unattended for a long time, left to their own devices. But then they saw that we were succeeding.
As for children with normal development, before they began attending inclusive groups, we talked with parents and explained the specifics, the concept of our model, showed that everything was thought out and prepared. Basically, we saw the adoption of this model by parents. Parents are most concerned about the appearance of children with behavioral disorders in the group. In the near future, before the launch of the program for children with autism, we will again meet with parents to discuss and inform about this project.
– What are parents more demanding of: the education of the child or the conditions for organizing his stay in kindergarten?
– Most parents, especially families whose children are in the kindergarten on a full-time program, attach more importance to the conditions of stay, they want the children to feel comfortable and safe in the space around them in the kindergarten. Other parents want to know down to the smallest detail what the children did, what they learned, what they learned during the day. They, one might say, are waiting for some instant magical results. And then we say that we monitor the development of children, constantly monitor them, carefully plan activities that help the child move forward. As an assessment of children’s success, we show parents photos of children in the process of activities, the results of their achievements. And then the parents realize that this is not a miracle, but painstaking work that we are doing.
We say that we are engaged in the education of the child in general. It’s not just math and reading, it’s his fitness, social development, emotional development – we can say we provide a “complete package”. If a child has difficulties with mathematics, problems in the behavioral sphere, then self-regulation issues should be resolved first, and then the rest.
– Are parents willing to participate in the life of the center?
– I give lectures and supervise the practice of students, one of the student seminars is called “Family Involvement”, we are studying how to involve parents in the life of the kindergarten. If we consider parent involvement only as a volunteer work in a group, then it is difficult for parents who work full time, in fact, we do not give them the opportunity to participate. Therefore, in order to involve parents in the life of the kindergarten, we develop and conduct a number of different events, such as “Weekends together”, events dedicated to literature, special seminars for parents. We try to look at the issue of working with parents broadly, offering parents different opportunities to be close to their children. Joint cultural excursions are also interesting, for example, we go to an art museum, parents can also come there. Informal meetings with parents over a cup of tea are also firmly established in practice, we discuss programs, various current issues, or, if parents have the opportunity to arrive thirty minutes early, we arrange joint breakfasts. Regularly, once a semester, we discuss with parents how they can develop certain skills in their children at home, or carry out some kind of joint activities. We believe that working with parents is extremely important, so we try to be creative and take into account the work schedule of parents to participate in the life of the kindergarten. Year by year we become more flexible and creative.
– Sounds very positive and constructive…
– The need for interaction with families is also confirmed by scientific research. There is evidence that children whose families are involved in kindergarten or school perform better. From practice, we can say that often those parents who had difficulties at school or in kindergarten or bad relations with their teachers when they were children do not make contact. In this situation, parents need to be shown that the kindergarten is a place where they can come and get useful, necessary information, that the kindergarten strives to meet the needs of the family, and teachers should not be afraid.
– You have experience working with both young children and students who become teachers. Is it hard to match?
– There are certainly differences in working with children and with students, but there are also similarities. For example, university students conducted various activities for children and felt how difficult it can be to attract the attention of children, captivate them and concentrate on the task. To which I said that sometimes when I lecture them, they also pay too much attention to their phones or just friends who are nearby. The age is different, but the problems are the same. There are, as it were, parallel levels of development. Sometimes I notice myself that I do some things like a child.
– What are the advantages of this combination?
– When I started teaching, I realized that I could interact with children and their families in the classroom. Then I began to work as a senior lecturer in our laboratory, in this place I could influence children, their families and students, future teachers, who, in turn, will also interact with children and their families. Our Child Development Lab is partnering with the University of Michigan to communicate with the public, conduct research, and test new concepts. We share experience at the local and national levels in order to interact at a more global level. I am passionate about my work, it is very important for me the high quality of education for children, support for families and their training, and my position provides an excellent opportunity to do all this.
– Can you predict which student will become a good teacher?
– Yes, and we carry out such a procedure. It can be determined that individual students have an innate predisposition to teaching, they are kind-hearted, open, they manage to establish good relationships, but sometimes it happens that these students are not doing well with “paper” work, planning, etc., then we We give them special support. There are students who brilliantly plan events, but they have difficulty building relationships with children. Teachers who conduct assessments at the university provide information to our laboratory on which skills need to be especially worked on, in which special assistance should be provided. There are also students who will not be able to work with a whole group of kids, but they will be able to interact with their parents. For such students, administrative work is recommended.
– You have a lot of experience working in inclusive groups. What advice would you give to educators who do not want to work in such groups?
– Very often teachers do not want to work in such groups, they just feel insecure. But the main task of the teacher is to support and promote the development of the child, no matter which child to help – with normal development or with Down syndrome. There are teachers who have a positive experience in such groups and they like this work, they could share their experience with other teachers. n

Note on Frequency of Inspections
Centers, Group Homes, and Licensed Family Homes::
In 2014, legislation was passed that changed the number of unannounced visits from two per year to one per year in Child Care Centers, Group Child Care Homes, and Licensed Family Child Care Homes. As a result of this new law, you may see a decrease in the number of deficiencies listed on this website for these types of providers. Unannounced visits are still made in response to a complaint, and visits are scheduled with the facility during the re-licensing process, which occurs every two years.

Leading programs – Natalia Strebneva and Alexander Khaburgaev .
Report by Elena Chumarnaya about a completely unusual and cozy way of raising little children.
To make it clear to the audience, a family kindergarten is someone’s house or someone’s apartment. And I visited an ordinary kindergarten, where family kindergartens come several times a week for physical education, music, etc. There I met them, women-parents told their stories. I note that I saw a very warm family atmosphere and very good relations between parents-teachers of family kindergartens and employees of the kindergarten to which they are attached. It’s great that there are such kindergartens. Because when I was looking for an opportunity to talk about family kindergartens, I found that there are problems with this. There are mothers who would like to run a family kindergarten and who seem to have opened it, but, according to them, some obstacles are being repaired for them, unscheduled inspections are being carried out. That is, the structures responsible for this allegedly want to close them.
E. Chumarnaya: Today there are new additions to the Vnukovo kindergarten: three family kindergartens have come to classes. While mothers of many children, they are also educators, are gathering, the senior educator told how it all began.
The first family kindergarten was opened here in 2008. Now three of these are attached to the 906th kindergarten. The caregivers have 6-8 children of their own. If their children grow out of preschool age, they recruit more strangers. There can be a maximum of five children in a group, a minimum of three.
Senior teacher Irina Alexandrova speaking.
I. Alexandrova: Family kindergartens come to the 906th kindergarten twice a week to work with specialists: with a teacher-psychologist, a physical education instructor and with a music director. The teachers bring their plans. They conduct classes at home according to all methods according to the program. In each of their visits, we gather them all together and discuss their work.
The first and most experienced mother-caregiver – Natalia Ivanov a. She considers this work an additional measure of social support for families with many children. After all, you have to pay for a regular kindergarten. And besides, dress and shoe children in something new and fashionable, so that both parents and kids do not feel awkward. Everything is easier at home. Another plus of family education is an individual approach to everyone.
All mothers-teachers of family kindergartens have undergone professional retraining, and they all agree on the main thing: they like that their children are at home, do not experience stress in an unfamiliar place, with strangers, but at the same time they receive exactly the same education , like others. Maybe that’s better. Indeed, one of the main advantages of family kindergartens is the opportunity to deal with each child individually, according to his daily routine, well-being and desires.
The guest in the studio is the head of the pre-school education sector of the Moscow school No. 41, which operates several family kindergartens, Lyubov Petrovna Korastelina .
L. Korastelina: Today, family kindergartens are the most successful and thoughtful project aimed at supporting large families. Today, in the educational complex of the Vnukovo district of the city of Moscow (six preschool institutions and three educational schools), there are already 9family kindergartens, and we started with three. We have accumulated a very good experience of working with such families. We understand that this is a highly demanded form of work. Family kindergartens are a kind of innovation in the field of education. As a rule, very active families come there, families interested in the development of children, since all the work in family kindergartens is built not only thanks to the work of the mother as a teacher in the family garden, but also the joint work of the kindergarten. Children have the opportunity to come to the kindergarten for swimming and physical education classes, we study music with these children, our children attend modeling and drawing classes. It is clear that not every mother has the ability to play a musical instrument and the ability to teach modeling and drawing.
Why then do other educational complexes deny themselves such a wonderful form of work with children of large families?
L. Korastelina: I think this is not quite a correct understanding of all the positive aspects of such an approach in solving a big and serious problem of educating preschoolers. Who, if not education, needs to meet the needs of large families.
What does it take to open such a family kindergarten?
L. Korastelina: The opening of a family kindergarten begins with a statement from a mother of many children, with which she comes to an educational organization. The Model Regulation on the organization and activities of a family kindergarten clearly states that a family kindergarten should consist of preschool children from 2 months to 7 years old. A mother of many children may have more children, but an indispensable condition is children of preschool age up to 7 years.
And how many children can there be in such a family kindergarten?
L. Korastelina: From three or more. There may be not only native children, but also children from other families.
When children enter kindergarten, at that age you can mold them into anything you want. Therefore, an important task that lies with the kindergarten is also the socialization of the child. That is, this should be done by professionals, teachers of preschool education should be trained…
L. Korastelin: Definitely necessary. We try to ensure that all mothers who are full-time employees – educators of family kindergartens, receive a pedagogical education. To do this, there are various forms of retraining and courses for them. Including we work closely with them in the course of internal work. During the “round tables” and other methodological events, we tell them how to raise children, how to develop them, what methods can be used for education.

For the past few years, I have been examining the top companies that offer fully remote or work-from-home jobs. (You can see the reports from 2022, 2020 and 2019.) For 2023, I once again tapped into FlexJobs—a leader in helping job seekers—which releases an annual report of the best work-from-anywhere jobs.
According to FlexJobs fully remote workers have become more in-demand than ever. “Over the past few years, the work landscape has undergone a significant shift towards greater job flexibility and remote careers,” says Kathy Gardner, a spokesperson for FlexJobs. “At FlexJobs, we witnessed a 20% increase in remote job postings in 2022, compared to 12% growth in the previous year.”
Companies see the value of remote workers, which includes improved retention rates, more diverse talent pools, increased productivity, more engagement and cost-efficiency, according to Gardner.

Remote jobs also remain in high demand from today’s workers. “Our surveys have found that 65% of people want to work remotely full time, and 63% would absolutely look for a new job if they couldn’t continue to work remotely,” says Gardner. “In an increasingly remote work landscape, many professionals we hear from on our career coaching team view work-from-anywhere jobs as the ultimate in location flexibility and independence.”
MORE FROMFORBES ADVISOR
One snag: Many workers are surprised to learn that the majority of remote jobs have geographic requirements, such as a specific state, city, country or even region of the country. “So among remote jobs, true work-from-anywhere roles, which allow employees to be location independent and work from anywhere in the world, are even more in demand because they’re harder to find,” says Gardner.
To help job seekers, FlexJobs has released a new list of the top 30 companies with the most remote, work-from-anywhere job listings. In order to make the list, the companies must offer a fully remote job with zero location restrictions that does not require any time in the office. And the job either needs to be full-time or part-time (but may also offer a flexible or alternative schedule).
“Luckily for job seekers, as more companies embrace remote work for the long-term, such as those highlighted on our latest list, the number of jobs that can be performed from anywhere is likely to expand and create even more opportunities,” says Gardner.
This year’s list of 30 companies showed some exciting changes. In addition to 21 new companies on the list, including employers like Airbnb, Toast and ConsenSys, Flexjobs saw extreme growth in two categories. “Accounting and finance (55%) and marketing (32%) experienced significant growth in the number of work-from-anywhere job postings throughout 2022,” says Gardner. “Other industries like HR & recruiting (9%) and writing (10%) grew more modestly.”
Topping the list for the second year in a row is Wikimedia Foundation, a San Francisco-based company that operates and supports some of the world’s largest reference projects. “Being a non-profit organization, it’s an excellent representation of the variety of companies and industries offering remote work-from-anywhere career opportunities” says Gardner.
Below you’ll find the top 30 companies with the most work-from-anywhere remote jobs. They are ranked in order from highest to lowest for volume of work-from-anywhere job listings.

9000 Top active companies hiring remote workers this year
2022 is starting with a tighter labor market than ever, with workers looking for jobs with more flexibility.
To help people narrow their search, FlexJobs has released its latest report on the top 100 companies hiring remote jobs in 2022, based on the nearly 57,000 companies that post their jobs on the job site.
New to the list this year are HubSpot, Mayo Clinic and Stitch Fix, while several major employers have been consistently in the top 100 since the report was published nine years ago: Anthem, Inc., CVS Health, Dell Technologies, Kelly, Parexel, SAP, Stride, Inc. and United Health Group.
Each company is hiring “hundreds, if not thousands, of remote jobs in a given year,” Bree Reynolds, FlexJobs career services manager, told CNBC Make It.
FlexJobs saw a 12% increase in telecommuting jobs in 2021 compared to 2020, with a notable increase in accounting and finance, as well as HR and recruiting jobs that can be completed partially or entirely from home . Nearly 30% of the ads are for vacancies at the manager or senior level.
“People are very interested in continuing to work remotely,” says Reynolds. Just look at the record number of people leaving low-paying, inflexible jobs during the Great Retirement, she says. “As remote work continues, employers are seeing more of what it can look like and how it can work in the long run.”
Here are the top 20 companies hiring for remote work in 2022 according to FlexJobs, and the full list of the top 100 companies is here.

West Windsor Plainsboro Schools Teach for a Better World
At West Windsor Plainsboro Schools in New Jersey, USA, more than 200 teachers working with District K-5 students are integrating empathy and understanding into math through a partnership with Better World Ed.
Building relationships. Perspective recognition. Connecting to the global community. How can educators start changing classrooms to raise global awareness and build capacity for inclusive and fair practices?
Storytelling unites us as human beings because it helps us realize the possibility inherent in all and shifts even the smallest child’s perspective outwards. We recognize oursel in each other. We create space for different travel. Through Better World Ed, we have increased our ability to engage students in math.
Two West Windsor Plainsboro School Principals, my partner (Melissa Pearson) and myself have been tasked with organizing professional development that integrates global competencies, SEL, and K-5 math for our district colleagues. We needed a hook.
“What if we serve tea?”
I love tea. I love the oily, spicy, first sip, slow down reminder, social experience when drinking it with friends. Pause and conversation.
And if serving tea while we engage teachers in professional development creates a material, physical and sensory experience? Why not?
We served tea. And we introduced Shantanu, one of my favorite people in the world.
We met Shantanu during our first study trip and shared with the faculty and administrators of the West Windsor-Plainsboro School District. Shantanu (and his readers), as a chaiwala who loves to connect with the local community, uses math to interact with customers and grow his business. While Learning Journeys can be used as stand-alone lessons, we harnessed the power of stories to support the strategic goals of West Windsor Plainsboro Schools and developed a professional development experience to illustrate the following:
1) We believe that all students should have access to high-level rigorous math content in an environment where risk-taking, deep conceptual understanding, and a growth mindset are the norm. The context of the stories creates a connection for learning because teachers can seek academic, social, emotional and global standards thus supporting integration planning and interdisciplinary immersion.
2) Global Connections in Study Travel to shape students’ perspective, in turn shape their disposition and ability to influence their community and the world. Authentic assignments give students the opportunity to see the power of mathematics in the work of ensuring social justice and creating free will.
3) Mathematics should give students the opportunity to develop free will, to see them all as “mathematicians.” We have structured our professional development so that all of our teachers and administrators can experience the learning journey. They watched the video, read the story, tested their assumptions, and then worked together to formulate their thoughts on mathematics. And we drank tea as a community.
National Council of Mathematics Teachers (NCTM) Catalyst for Change The series describes our responsibility to develop math identity, agency, and authority in all of our students. Study trips touch on all three aspects of equitable mathematics teaching. Changing math so that all children have a positive and effective learning experience is central to our work. The spaces we create in our math classrooms should support comprehension through the use of students’ knowledge. knowledge funds. When students see themselIn the process of learning, we develop a sense of belonging to our mathematical community. All students are entitled to classes that invite conversation, critical thinking, and a variety of activities that encourage deep intellectual interaction.
Teachers today rely on the classroom culture they have built with their students to guide discussions about racism and the historical context of protest in this country. They listen, confirm and respond in a language appropriate to their development. Teacher after teacher at West Windsor-Plainsboro schools said that the experience students gained in discerning the perspectives of others on study tours gave them the opportunity to practice this extremely difficult work in times of transition, uncertainty, and unimaginable change.

We aim to create an exemplary school district that is acknowledged for the caliber of our graduates, the quality of our staff, and the excellence of our programs.
Iowa City Community School District Strategic Plan
-
When people think about our schools, words like traditional and established come to mind, but also responsive, innovative, creative, inclusive, and progressive. For more than one hundred years, the Iowa City Community School District has been the instructional leader in eastern Iowa, across the state, and throughout the nation.
What makes the Iowa City Community School District so special? Talented and dedicated staff is the foundation of our success. Walking through the halls of our schools, you will notice the pride our employees take in their work. Everything we do is focused on providing the finest educational opportunities for the children of our community. Expectations are high — for students and employees — and it shows time and time again in the recognition of our people and programs.
Our community sets a high priority on the education of its youth. Strong, open communication and efficient use of tax dollars are cornerstones of citizen support for the District’s educational programs. Community partnership and input into our planning are key components of our schools’ success.
There are many ways to measure the quality of education in a community. We feel confident that you will find that quality is the hallmark in each of our schools. When you visit our classrooms, you will see firsthand what educational excellence is all about in the Iowa City Community School District.

Melissa Galloway
Grant Elementary
Melissa Galloway
5th Grade Teacher
Grant ElementaryMs. Galloway taught my son two years ago at Grant Elementary in 5th Grade. She was so impactful on his learning, motivation, and confidence. I know last year in 6th grade he still sought her out to catch up including stopping by her class. Fast forward to this year when I see Ms. Galloway in the stands at a 7th grade North Central football game. I talked to her after the game and stated how nice it was of her to come. She said, “Well your son emailed me and told me they were playing tonight”. I had no idea he had done this.
Here is what came to my mind. This teacher got to know my son as a person and showed him how important he was throughout elementary school. This led to a 12 year old boy having the confidence to independently email her to let her know they were playing football. Finally, Ms. Galloway took time out of her busy night after teaching all day to cheer on the team. Many times, I hear that teachers feel like they aren’t able to do enough. That is definitely not the case with a dedicated teacher such as this. I want Ms. Galloway to know how much it meant for my son and the kids on the team that knew her to see her there. I want her to know how much it meant for us as parents to see her there as well. Kids learn best from teachers they admire and trust. It is no doubt that students learn from Ms. Galloway daily!

City HighShe worked with me for 4 years and I loved working with her that whole time.
Jen taught my son for 4 years and is a great outside-the-box thinker. She was the first in ICCSD to use Peer Mediated Instruction to teach him social skills with peers. She communicated very effectively with his family and collaborated with us. During the pandemic lockdown, she worked hard to engage him through virtual learning and supported him in continuing his goals despite all odds. Because he requires adult supervision, she volunteered to accompany him both to Prom and during graduation so that he could enjoy those activities with peers. It was a joy to work with her, we trust her, and we learned so much from her. Thank you.

Wonderful Ideas to Celebrate Your Child’s 2nd Birthday Party
If your little bundle of joy is soon going to turn two, then we are sure you must be looking for ideas to host a fabulous birthday party for him and his little friends. We have it all here for you in this article. Read through and you will get a good idea of what to do and how to plan the best birthday for your little child.
What Can You Expect on Your Child’s Second Birthday?
Your precious little one at the age of two is too small to understand the importance of having a birthday party. He may be anxious a minute before and happily cooing away the next minute. At his age, nothing will seem more important to him than himself. Therefore expect the unexpected on your little one’s second birthday party.
There will be other children who may want something but your little one may act adamant. That is because, at the age of two, he does not understand that the child asking for something is his guest and being the host, he should comply. Then a fight may ensue; he may get aggressive when he sees somebody being more important than him. So plan ahead and know what to do if such a situation arises.
At What Time Should You Celebrate Your Toddler’s Second Birthday?
Every child has a different sleep pattern and as a parent, you know your child best. Therefore, it is for you to decide what time is best to throw a birthday party for your child. It is usual for every toddler of this age to have a nap in the afternoon. Therefore having the party during the early evening hours (3 PM – 4 PM) is best. Your little one after having a good nap of 2-3 hours will feel fresh and energetic and will have very fewer chances of being cranky and irritable during the party hours. However, it is advisable to get over with the birthday celebrations within an hour or two since your two-year-old may not be able to sustain his energy for more than two hours.
How to Plan Your Toddler’s Second Birthday Party
Planning your munchkin’s second birthday party can be fun. An interesting theme with some fun elements, few games and neat planning is all that is required to make it awesome and memorable.
Given below are some ways in which you can make it a party for everyone to enjoy and remember.
Location Ideas
The location you choose depends on how big you want the party to be, how many people you wish to invite and what activities you want to have at the party. Listed below are five such locations that can be the venue for your two-year-old’s birthday bash.
- Home
The idea for a 2nd birthday party at home is by far the commonest of all. After all, your little one is most comfortable at home. Moreover, if you see him getting sleepy or cranky, you can immediately take him to his place of solace, i.e., his room.
- Party Halls
If you want to plan a big bash for your child by inviting a lot of people, you will need a big, open space. This can be possible only if you take a party hall on rent. However, for a birthday party, it may be heavy on your pocket.
- Garden
If your two-year-old’s birthday falls in spring, a garden party would be the best venue. Just put in a few play things like swings, see-saw, slides etc and see the little guests have fun.
- Recreation Centres
These days many recreation centres with children’s play areas have cropped up. These places not only provide space for the party to be conducted but also food and fun games. However, this can cost you a bomb and make your budget go topsy-turvy.
- Community Hall
Most apartment complexes and gated communities have a community hall which can be used for parties. Mostly, you won’t have to pay for a community hall and you can throw a big party.
Theme Ideas

How to celebrate the second birthday of a child at home
0

0
The second birthday of a child is in no way inferior in importance to the first. Now the baby has become more conscious, began to remember people, places, things, moments. It is important that the holiday gives positive emotions and leaves only a pleasant trace in the memory.
What is the best way to celebrate a baby’s second birthday at home so that everyone is happy? More on this later in our article.
1
Whom to invite
Only the closest relatives and friends who are sincerely interested in your child’s life.
It’s good if your friends have children who are the same age as your baby. They will be interesting together.
You should not invite those who hurt their son/daughter or who they don’t like spending time with. In childhood, resentment is remembered for a lifetime, and can develop into psychological trauma in adolescence and adulthood.
2
How to decorate a room
When decorating a room, you can choose a certain style. For example, turn a room into a pirate or space ship, a forest corner, a paradise island, an abandoned castle room. If you decide to have a theme party, then the design of the house should match the theme.
Be sure to tell your guests about the genre of your holiday.
You can have a party of one color or a masquerade ball. The birthday boy needs to pick up a beautiful outfit. Fairy, princess, butterfly costumes are most suitable for girls. And for boys – a pirate, a superhero or a cowboy.
Decorate with balloons
Draw funny faces on the balloons or stick paper-cut eyes, ears, a mouth, a hat on them. Such a decoration will amuse not only children, but also adults.
You can order or make your own wall press with cloth, balls, paper, toys and flowers. Guests will be photographed in front of her.

If you have a theme party
-
Space
Decorate the balloons with stars made of paper or foil (the main thing is that the child does not get hurt if he wants to pick up the balloon).
-
Marine
Glue eyes, ponytails. Let your balls become fish.
-
Pirate
Make faces on one-eyed pirate balloons with bandages. You can decorate the rest with the appropriate attributes – images of treasure chests, sabers, parrots.
-
Forest
Build animals with balloons.
-
Cartoon
Let each balloon turn into a character from your child’s favorite cartoon.
You can make a giraffe, a dog and other animals out of long balls without anyone’s help.
DIY
Balloons should not be the only decoration. Try to create a festive atmosphere in all corners of the apartment. The arch of multi-colored balls looks very festive. It is not necessary to order it and spend a lot of money for 1 day. Here you can learn how to make a cool balloon arch with your own hands.
Draw a poster – use bright colors. You can stick cute and funny baby pictures on it. The poster can be saved and, after many years, shown to an adult baby.
You can also put a stable vase with decorative branches, for example, and decorate them with photos of the “hero of the occasion” 🙂 Believe me, the guests will love it. It will be interesting for them to consider the periods of growing up of the child, funny situations with him, which you recorded in the photo.
Hang homemade garlands on the walls. They can be made from photographs, cut out pictures, images of characters, flowers, soft pompoms – any creative ideas will successfully fit into the holiday atmosphere. It is worth noting that not only horizontal, but also vertical garlands are now very popular. You can make Chinese lanterns.
Paper cartoon images can be stuck on cupboards, attached to curtains, hung on strings, on doorknobs – let everyone in the house announce the upcoming holiday.
Decorating a boy’s room
In a boy’s room decorated for the holiday, masculine motives should prevail. Decorate walls, cabinets, curtains with images of cars, pirates, cowboys, weapons. If you know what kind of cartoons and what characters your baby loves, be sure to prepare their pictures.
Girl
- It is better to choose pastel colors;
- Balloons and poster should be feminine;
- Refresh the image of the apartment with flowers or their images, hang a garland, bows, pompoms. Use glitter.
Let your daughter feel like a real princess on this day!

Festive menu
Take care of the festive menu for children and delicious and beautiful dishes for adults in advance. Remember that for children and parents it should be different. For parents, put standard holiday dishes – meat, side dishes, salads, aspic. For children, prepare lungs: cereals, mashed potatoes, baked dishes.
As a dessert for toddlers, place sliced fruits on plates: apples, bananas, pears.
It is important that there is a cake at the celebration. But it should be according to such a recipe that the birthday man can also try. Therefore, we recommend that you prepare it yourself. So you will be sure that it does not contain all products harmful to the child.
Cake for a child 2 years old
-
baby biscuits
400 g -
Children’s cottage cheese
250 g -
Low fat sour cream
150 g -
Sugar
taste
You can also use bananas (or other fruits your baby is not allergic to) and some milk to soak the biscuits.
- Put the biscuits into the milk to soften a little.
- Mix cottage cheese, sour cream and sugar – this will be the cream for the cake.
- Finely chop the fruit to be used as a dessert.
- Lay out the first layer of biscuits, spread with cream and place fruit on top.
- Lay out the layers in this way until you run out of food. On top of the last layer of cream, beautifully place chopped fruits.
Children’s cake is ready! Don’t forget to set the table nicely.
5
Tips for organizing
You should think over the scenario of a children’s celebration in advance. It is necessary to check that no one is sad, not bored. Some ideas can be “borrowed” from the scenario of celebrating the birthday of the 1st year of the child.
- Make sure that light and relaxed music accompanies the celebration throughout the day.
- Provide entertainment and games for younger and older audiences.
- Toddlers can play with toys, collect soft puzzles, throw balloons.
- You can hold quizzes for children – ask them simple questions, make riddles. Reward your child for each correct answer. To do this, prepare small children’s prizes in advance – soft key chains, soap bubbles, small toys.

Contests for children of different ages on Birthday

Adult Table Contests
Alphabetical Greetings
Have the guests take it in turns to come up with greetings, starting with alphabetical letters in order. Therefore, the first begins his words with the letter “A”, the second – with “B”, the third – with “C”, and so on.
- “And we wish you happiness and success…”
- “Be healthy and happy! Let…”
- “Merry and happy days…!”
- “Let sadness bypass…”
- “Day after day, let him give joy …”
True-False
- Each guest writes down three statements about him. Two of them are true, one is false.
- For the purity of the experiment, a person marks a false statement on a piece of paper.
- The facilitator reads out all three sentences, and the rest must guess which one is not true.
- Those who guessed correctly, or those who could not be guessed, win.
“What is hidden?”
If there are those at the table who can or love to write poetry, then this competition will be very useful.
- Give each participant an item that is well packaged (so that others cannot see).
- Let everyone describe this object in verse without naming it.
- The one whose poem will be the most beautiful and original will win.
“What’s next?”
The host calls the letter, and all those seated must name the object, thing, product, whose name begins with it and is directly accessible. The winner is the one who is the last to be able to say a word with a hidden letter.
“Photos”
Do parents really know their child well? Both mom and dad? What about grandparents? What about next of kin?
- Take photos of the birthday kids and other kids you know, mix them up.
- Will everyone be able to find photos with the hero of the occasion? Here you will find out!

Children’s birthday is a great holiday for every family, no matter how old the child is. As the baby grows older, it becomes more and more difficult for parents to please him and organize the event so that the hero of the occasion is delighted. However, if you devote enough time to preparation, it is easy to have time to think through all the nuances. To begin with, it is important to decide on the venue of the holiday. It can be a house, nature, cafes, restaurants and other establishments. Below are practical ideas and tips on where and how to celebrate a child’s birthday.
Why it is important to take into account the age and gender of the child
For caring parents, it is important that the holiday organized by them pleases, first of all, their child. Given that the holiday takes place once a year, it is important to try to make it truly unforgettable. Moreover, you can arrange a child’s birthday on your own based on any possibilities and budget.
Expert opinion
A kid looking forward to a long-awaited holiday may ask his parents several times a day how long to wait. Instead of just answering how much time is left, make a special calendar for him, for example, with tear-off leaves. This will make the waiting more pleasant, and the holiday even more desirable.
As a child grows up, their tastes, interests and preferences change, and this happens rapidly. And, therefore, the options and format of the celebration that were suitable last year, most likely, will no longer be relevant this year. It is important for parents to observe what their children are fond of, what cartoons and films they watch, with whom they communicate, what heroes and characters they especially like. Such observations will tell you how to entertain the child at his holiday and guess with the peculiarities of its holding.
It is also important to consider the gender of the baby. The girl will like it when everything goes beautifully and unusually. Most parents note that their daughter likes to be the center of attention, so it’s better to choose a theme that would make her feel like a real princess. Boys, on the other hand, usually prefer more active, sporting events, so it is more important for them that everything is fun and provocative. Of course, it is important to take into account the individual characteristics of your child.
Boys birthday ideas
For boys, good options for organizing and celebrating a birthday are:
- Sports event . From childhood, boys have a desire to compete, learn to play in a team and develop speed, intelligence and other sports skills. If the child’s birthday takes place outdoors, then this will be a great option. Consider in advance various contests, competition and, of course, incentive prizes.
- Quests . This option will be great for boys aged 9-15 years. During this period, children tend to be interested in detective, historical stories. One of the adults or a guest animator can conduct a quest with tasks. The plots are chosen in a variety of ways, but it is better if it is a plot with a favorite character or from the birthday man’s favorite movie.
- Master class . Maybe the hero of the occasion is fond of some kind of sport? Or maybe interested in pottery or other craft? A great idea would be to arrange a master class where the birthday boy and his guests will learn something new. For parents, this is a way to both entertain their son and teach something useful. You can arrange a master class at home, in the open air and in special centers.
When it comes to birthday venues, boys are more likely to enjoy outdoor activities where they enjoy freedom and vent their energy.
Birthday Ideas for Girls
The parents of a girl always want to please their little princess and make her the perfect birthday party. We recommend using one of these methods available to everyone:
- Photo Party . Girls have a love for photographs in their blood, and often parents themselves are surprised at how their daughters, even at a very young age, know how to pose for the camera. For babies, it is quite possible to arrange a photo zone at home. It is enough to think over the background and buy suitable accessories – jewelry, balls, and other attributes. Older girls will like to visit the photo studio. It is desirable to provide not only a photographer, but also a makeup artist, a hairdresser.
- Culinary Studio . Girls aged 6-12 enjoy learning to cook. If your daughter is also interested in cooking and is happy to help her mother, you can celebrate your child’s birthday in a culinary studio. There, together with her friends, she will learn how to make chocolates or gingerbread. But you can arrange a “studio” at home, the main thing is to have enough space and inventory.
- A visit to a beauty salon . The older girls get, the more they are attracted to the beauty industry. For a young lady aged 8-10 years old, a trip to the hairdresser is suitable, where she, along with her friends, will get beautiful hairstyles. Older girls will be happy to visit a manicure or makeup artist. It will also be unusual to arrange a master class in the salon, for example, in hair care.
If you celebrate a children’s birthday using such original ideas, both the hero of the occasion and her guests will remember this eventful day for a long time.
How to organize a children’s birthday at home
Several decades ago, most families had only one option where and how to celebrate a children’s birthday – at home. For some, the holiday at home is still associated with the traditions of that time, but, in fact, it can be fun and unusual, so you won’t be bored.
An expert’s opinion
If it’s hard to make a choice, try celebrating your child’s birthday in several stages. For example, first invite relatives home, and then take the hero of the occasion to any entertainment venue where friends will be waiting for him.
Tips on how to make a holiday at home not boring
The main thing that parents need to do to make everything fun is to think about entertainment in advance. A variety of games and contests will cheer up the birthday boy and all his guests. At the same time, it is important to combine active games with each other, as well as calmer ones, for example, board games. Here are some simple tips to help parents find the right entertainment:
- Consider age. Toddlers who do not sit still for a minute are unlikely to be so interested in games. But school-age children will like entertainment in which you need to think – rebuses, puzzles, crosswords and riddles.
- Prepare prizes . Children of all ages like to receive gifts and it’s great if not only the birthday boy is in the spotlight, but his guests also receive small gifts. Just make sure that no one is left deprived or offended.
- Keep up with the times . It is important for parents to understand that the competitions that their parents prepared for them in childhood are unlikely to appeal to modern children. Look for ideas on how best to entertain kids, better on the Internet.
- It is equally important to organize a delicious table . Of course, at a children’s event you can not do without sweets. On your child’s birthday, try to forget about the advice of nutritionists and cook something that is not very healthy, but that children love very much. One of the win-win options is pizza. By the way, to save time and effort, consider ordering ready-made food at home, unless, of course, you are sure of its quality.
Tips for decorating your home
Decorating an apartment or house for the arrival of guests is a mandatory step in preparing for a children’s birthday party at home. You can not do without balloons, which are loved by kids and teenagers.
Helium balloons look especially festive and create a cozy atmosphere. They can be kept under the ceiling or be placed throughout the room with small weights. Balls with inscriptions, especially thematic ones, look interesting. By the way, the birthday boy can distribute them to guests at the end of the event. Balls made of corrugated paper look spectacular.
Parents have two options – to surprise their child and decorate the room in his absence, or vice versa, to decorate together. Decor items are sold in stores ready-made, so if you don’t have the opportunity or skills, it’s better to buy everything ready-made.
It is recommended to involve the invited guests of the birthday person in the design of the room. Often they are given the task to draw a picture or make an application on a specific topic. Upon arrival, all works are collected and hung in a specially prepared place. So every little guest will feel his contribution to the event.
Children’s birthday in nature
If there is an opportunity to celebrate a children’s birthday in the open air, then most parents will use it without hesitation. Consider going to a country house or out of town, especially if you live in an apartment. Of course, to celebrate a children’s holiday in such conditions, it will take more time. After all, you need to find a suitable place, provide transport for all those invited, and even take into account the weather. However, the effort is worth it, because both adults and children can relax and enjoy the fun in nature.
Some mistakenly think that a child’s birthday in the open air is an option only for the warm season. In fact, it is quite possible to have fun, interesting and useful time not only in summer. It is only important to take into account the weather and think over the program in advance. Below are ideas for a children’s birthday party for different seasons.
Children’s birthday in spring and autumn
At this time, when nature comes to life actively and everything around blooms with bright colors, no one wants to sit within four walls. Even more so, for children’s events it is better to consider the possibility of staying in the fresh air, for example:
- Parks . After winter, children especially want to quickly visit everything that was closed during the cold season – attractions, playgrounds, and other entertainment places. Having received an invitation from the birthday man to go to the park, all guests will be satisfied. The main thing is sufficient accompaniment of adults on the street, especially for preschool children.
- Forest . In late spring and early autumn, there is an opportunity to have fun in the forest. For example, together with their parents, the birthday boy and his guests can go on a picnic. The forest glade is an expanse for boys and girls aged 5-6 to 11-13 years old. During this period, they are especially active and they will like the prospect of running and playing outdoor games.
- Yard of a cottage or a private house . This is a win-win option for early spring or late autumn, when the weather has not yet fully improved and you won’t be able to spend a lot of time outside. Children will play and have fun outdoors, and then come in to warm up and have a snack in a warm room.
Expert opinion
Over the age of 9-10, students may not want to spend time in nature. They are more accustomed to being at home playing gadgets. To prevent this, it is important for parents to think about how to arrange a holiday in an unusual and interesting way, in order to interest the birthday boy and entertain the guests.
Children’s birthday party in the summer
There is no greater space for a flight of fancy than organizing a child’s birthday party in the summer. The sun, warmth and good mood are pushing you to go outside, and not sit at home. Here are some ideas that will help you celebrate a children’s birthday in the summer outdoors:
- take the birthday party and their guests to the banks of a river or lake – even if the water has not warmed up and swimming is not possible, it is easy to organize active games in such an environment;
- rent a boat or boat – a children’s birthday party on the water will be remembered for a long time by all those invited;
- introduce children to sports – take the child with guests to the field or playground, where you organize games of badminton, tennis, football, volleyball, etc. ;
- use the services of an animator to celebrate your baby’s birthday outside the city, in the yard of a private house or cottage.
Summer is the season for fresh fruits and vegetables. Take advantage of this when decorating a children’s holiday table. Fruit skewers, berry smoothies and other healthy delicacies available in summer look unusual and original.
Children’s birthday party in winter
Even in winter, when the weather is harsh, it’s really possible to find a way to celebrate a birthday outside the city in a fun and interesting way. For example:
- Take the kids to the skating rink. It is not necessary to use ice rinks in shopping centers where a lot of people skate at the same time. Outside the city there are private establishments in which the ice rink is located on the street, and after a walk, all the invitees go to warm themselves and drink tea in wooden houses. This version of the holiday is suitable for older students.
- Help to plunge into childhood . Often, modern kids are not accustomed to play snowballs, build snowmen and wallow in the snow. When celebrating a birthday in a summer cottage or in a private house, invite an animator who will help children enjoy the delights of winter and plunge into an atmosphere of fun and joy.
- Go to slide and have fun with the whole family. Sledding, skating and other accessories are loved by both adults and children of all ages. By inviting children with their parents to the birthday of a child, it will be possible to organize fun leisure activities for everyone.
Expert opinion
Spending time together in nature brings families together. Therefore, offer your child the option that the invitees include not only his friends, but also their parents.
And the most convenient solution to spend a children’s birthday in nature or outside the city is to rent a camp site or a cottage for the event. Here are some options where you can organize an unusual birthday party for your child and his friends:

Children’s birthday party in various establishments
There are many establishments in Moscow that offer children’s birthday parties. The main advantage why parents choose this method is that there is no need to spend time preparing. All that is needed is to choose an institution in advance, if necessary, make a reservation and bring the birthday boy with invited guests by the agreed time.
Cafes and Restaurants
For the event to be held at the proper level, parents carefully choose a cafe or restaurant. In addition to taking into account the preferences of the hero of the occasion, you need to pay attention to:
- suggested menu – it should not be banal and should correspond to the tastes of children;
- services provided – it is better to choose a cafe or restaurant that provides comprehensive services for the creation and holding of events for adults and children;
- the presence of animators – if necessary, they are invited separately.
If your birthday is in the summer, consider cafes and restaurants near the water. This idea will definitely be appreciated by older students (10-15 years old). Many establishments in Moscow open verandas and balconies during the summer, which are also allowed to be booked and used for events.
