What types of childcare are there?

There is a wide range of early childhood education and care services available to Australian families, and for first time parents the choice of child care options can be confusing. 

To assist you in understanding the types of child care and early childhood education available, we have listed below some of the more commonly used child care options along with a brief description. For detailed information on the differences between these types of child care, read our article on which child care is best.

Child Care Centre or Long Day Care 

Education and Care service for children under school age, on premises especially built or adapted for early childhood education and care services. Private operators, local councils, community organisations, employers and non-profit organisations may run long day care centres.

Long day care centres provide all-day or part-time care for working families and offer developmental programs for children under school age within their care programs. Meals are usually provided and some long day care centres provide care for limited numbers of primary school age children before and after school, and during school holidays.

Family Day Care 

A network of experienced carers and educators who provide care and developmental activities in their own homes for other people’s children.

Family day care is primarily for children who have not yet started school, however they also provide care for school aged children up to 12 years old. Care is flexible and can be tailored to suit each family’s needs including care outside normal working and business hours and, if needed, overnight care for shift working parents.

Pre-school / Kindergarten / Prep 

Pre-school is a planned educational program for children in the years before a child commences school. Children are usually aged between 3 and 5 years of age. Pre-school may take place in a range of settings including a purpose built building, in a community setting, a school, as part of a long day care centre or a mobile or visiting service.

Pre-school generally runs between the hours of 9:00am and 3:00pm similar to school hours although this may vary by state and by service so check with the provider.

The terms kindergarten or prep are also used in some states, while both are catered to children’s education.

Before / After School Care or Outside School Hours Care 

Supervised care and recreation for school-age children:

OSHC is usually associated with schools and caters to occasional care for primary school children. Most OSHC services are operated by community and private organisations. Typical hours for OSHC services are:

  • Before school 7. 00 – 9.00 am

  • After school 3.00 – 6.00 pm

  • Vacation 7.00 am – 6.00 pm each week day

Occasional, Flexible or Casual Care Services

Occasional, Flexible or Casual Care Services are childcare providers for short periods of care for children under school age. Families can access Occasional, Flexible or Casual Care on either a regular or casual basis a variety of reasons including, shift or part-time work, respite care, crisis and emergency care, shopping or attending appointments.

Occasional, Flexible or Casual Care allows people the flexibility to leave their children in an early childhood learning environment to socialise and interact with other children, while they undertake other tasks. Community organisations, non-profit organisations and local councils may run Occasional, Flexible or Casual Care centres.

In Home Care 

In home care is a flexible form of child care where quality early childhood education and care is provided in the family home by a qualified In Home Care educator.

This type childcare service is a form of government-subsidised child care, and is for families that can’t access other mainstream child care options (centre-based day care, family day care or outside school hours care) because they:

  • Work non-standard or variable hours, or

  • Are geographically isolated, or

  • Have challenging and complex family needs.

Families must demonstrate to the Australian Government that other types of approved child care services aren’t available or appropriate, and be eligible for the Child Care Subsidy.

In Home Care Support Agencies assess families’ eligibility for an In Home Care place and help them find care that meets their needs.

Nanny

Employed by the family on either a live-in or live-out basis to undertake all tasks related to the care of children. Duties are generally restricted to child care and the domestic tasks related to child care.  A nanny may or may not have had any formal training or be employed by a nanny agency, though they often have a good deal of experience. A nanny’s working week ranges from forty to sixty hours.

Nanny Sharing

A nanny employed by two families to undertake tasks related to the care of children. If you are interested in having a nanny care for your child but are reluctant due to the expense of how many hours of care you need, nanny sharing with another family maybe the solution.

Au Pair

A foreign national in Australia for up to a year for cultural exchange purposes and to experience Australian life. Lives as part of the host family and receives a small allowance / salary in exchange for child care and household duties. May or may not have previous child care experience.

Mother’s Help

A mother’s help has little or no previous experience of caring for children. They generally have career aspirations in the field of child care and this is one way of gaining experience while they undertake formal study. A mother’s help will assist the parent(s) with child care and housekeeping duties. These duties should be carried out under the supervision of the parent.

Babysitter

Provides supervisory, custodial care of children on an irregular full-time or part-time basis, usually comprising of evening or afternoon sessions.

Childminding Service

A pre-school service which may include an overnight service offered by a person who single-handedly takes care of pre-school children, including the childminder’s own children, in the childminder’s home for a total of more than 2 hours per day, except when the exemptions in Section 58L of Part 12 the Child and Family Agency Act 2013 apply.

Sessional pre-school service

Means a pre-school service offering a planned programme to pre-school children for a total of not more than 3.5 hours per session. Services covered by the above definition may include pre-schools, playgroups, crèches, Montesorri pre-schools, naíonraí, notifiable childminders or similar services which generally cater for pre-school children.

Part-Time Day Care service

A pre-school service offering a structured day care service for pre-school children for a total of not more than 3.5 hours and less than 5 hours per day and which may include a sessional pre-school service for pre-school children not attending the full day care service. The service must provide the same physical environment, including rest, play and sanitary facilities, as for full day care.  Services covered by the above definition may include pre-schools, playgroups, crèches, Montesorri pre-schools, naíonraí, notifiable childminders or similar services which generally cater for pre-school children.

Full Day Care service

A pre-school service offering a structured day care service for pre-school children for more than 5 hours per day and which may include a sessional pre-school service for pre-school children not attending the full day care service. Services such as those currently described as day nurseries and crèches are included in this definition.  Where a full day care service also caters for children who do not attend on a full day basis, the adult/child ratio and group size for sessional services should apply.

Pre-school service in a Drop-in-Centre

A pre-school service offering day care which is used exclusively on an intermittent basis. This refers to a service where a pre-school child is cared for over a period of not more than two hours while the parent or guardian is availing of a service or attending an event.  Such services are mainly located in shopping centres, leisure centres or other establishments as part of customer/client service.

Temporary pre-school service

A pre-school service offering day care exclusively on  a temporary basis.  This refers to a service where a pre-school child is cared for while the parent or guardian is attending a once-off event such as a conference or a sports event.

Overnight pre-school service

A service in which pre-school children are taken care of for a total of more than 2 hours between the hours of 7pm and 6am except where the exemptions provided in Section 58L of Part 12 of the Child and Family Agency Act 2013 apply.

Cases when you can not use cash registers | Federal Tax Service of Russia

Cash registers are not used by credit institutions.

Cash registers are not used by organizations and individual entrepreneurs in automatic settlement devices when making payments made exclusively with the coin of the Bank of Russia, with the exception of automatic settlement devices powered by electrical energy (including electric accumulators or batteries). nine0003

Organizations and individual entrepreneurs, with the exception of those that trade in excisable goods, taking into account the specifics of their activities or the characteristics of their location, can make settlements without the use of cash registers when carrying out the following activities and when providing the following services:

  • sale of newspapers and magazines on paper, as well as the sale of related products in newspaper and magazine kiosks, provided that the share of the sale of newspapers and magazines in their turnover is at least 50 percent of the turnover and the range of related products is approved by the executive authority of the constituent entity of the Russian Federation. Accounting for trade revenue from the sale of newspapers and magazines and from the sale of related products is kept separately; nine0010
  • sale of securities;
  • providing meals to students and employees of educational organizations implementing basic general education programs during training sessions;
  • trade in retail markets, fairs, exhibition complexes, as well as in other territories designated for trade, with the exception of shops, pavilions, kiosks, tents, mobile shops, auto shops, motor vans, container-type premises and other located in these places of trade trading places (premises and motor vehicles, including trailers and semi-trailers) similarly equipped and ensuring the display and safety of goods, open counters inside covered market premises in the sale of non-food products, except for the sale of non-food products, which are defined in the list approved by the Government of the Russian Federation; nine0010

  • acceptance of glassware and waste materials from the public, except for scrap metal, precious metals and precious stones;
  • shoe repair and dyeing;

  • supervision and care of children, the sick, the elderly and the disabled;
  • sale by a manufacturer of articles of folk arts and crafts;
  • plowing vegetable gardens and sawing firewood;
  • porter services at railway stations, bus stations, air terminals, airports, sea and river ports;
  • renting (renting) of residential premises by an individual entrepreneur, as well as residential premises together with parking spaces located in apartment buildings owned by this individual entrepreneur on the right of ownership; nine0010
  • retail sale of shoe covers.

Individual entrepreneurs applying the patent system of taxation, carrying out the types of entrepreneurial activities established by subparagraphs 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12 – 17, 19 – 27, 29 – 31, 34 – 36, 39, 41 – 44, 49 – 52, 54, 55, 57 – 62, 64, 66 – 80 of paragraph 2 of Article 346.43 of the Tax Code of the Russian Federation, may carry out settlements within the framework of the types of activities specified in this paragraph without the use of cash registers, subject to the issuance (direction ) to the buyer (client) of a document confirming the fact of a settlement between an individual entrepreneur and a buyer (client), containing the name of the document, its serial number, details established by paragraphs four to twelve of paragraph 1 of article 4.7 of the Federal Law “On the use of cash registers in the implementation of settlements in the Russian Federation”. nine0003

Cash registers are not used by individual entrepreneurs who apply the special tax regime “Tax on professional income” in relation to income subject to tax on professional income.

Pharmacy organizations located in feldsher and feldsher-obstetric centers located in rural areas and separate subdivisions of medical organizations licensed for pharmaceutical activities (outpatient clinics, feldsher and feldsher-obstetric stations, centers (departments) of general medical (family) practice) located in rural settlements in which there are no pharmacy organizations. nine0003

CTT may not be applied when providing services for religious rites and ceremonies, as well as when selling objects of religious worship and religious literature in religious buildings and structures and in territories related to them, in other places provided to religious organizations for these purposes, in institutions and enterprises of religious organizations registered in accordance with the procedure established by the legislation of the Russian Federation.

CRE is not used by organizations exercising the powers of state authorities of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation and local governments to provide for a fee the right to use parking lots (parking spaces) located on public roads of regional (intermunicipal) and local significance, as well as parking lots (parking lots) places) created on land plots owned by the constituent entities of the Russian Federation, owned by municipalities or state property for which is not delimited, when such organizations make settlements for the provision of this right, subject to transfer in full in the context of each settlement to an account opened in the territorial body of the Federal Treasury, within five working days from the date of receipt by such organizations of funds. nine0003

CCP may not be used by state and municipal libraries, as well as libraries of the Russian Academy of Sciences, other academies, research institutes, educational organizations when providing paid services to the population related to librarianship on the premises of these libraries. The list of paid services provided by these libraries without the use of CCP is approved by the Government of the Russian Federation.

CCP may not be used by individual entrepreneurs when selling entrance tickets and subscriptions to theaters that are state or municipal institutions, carried out by hand and (or) tray. nine0003

Municipal houses and palaces of culture, municipal houses of folk art, municipal clubs, municipal cultural development centers, municipal ethno-cultural centers, municipal cultural and leisure centers, municipal houses of folklore, municipal houses of crafts, municipal houses of leisure, municipal cultural and leisure and cultural and sports centers, municipal museums (with the exception of the indicated municipal cultural institutions located in cities, district centers (except for the administrative centers of municipal districts, which are the only settlement of the municipal district), urban-type settlements) when making payments for the services they render to the population in the field of culture, the list of which is approved by the Government of the Russian Federation. nine0003
