The parent handbook provides all of the rules, guidelines, policies and procedures for families enrolled at Shaker Child Enrichment Center. Please click the Microsoft Word document to the left, download, and review the parent handbook to make sure we can meet your child care needs. If you have any questions about the handbook don’t hesitate to give us a call.
Child Enrollment Packet
When you’re ready to enroll your child in our program you will need to fill out the child enrollment packet that can be downloaded from the PDF document to the left. There is a $25 non – refundable registration fee for all new children that are enrolled in out program.
If you’re expecting parents and working towards arranging child care for your new baby then it is important that you reserve your child a place in our program because finding infant care is notoriously difficult and infant openings tend to fill up quickly.

Health and Child Development Info
Below we have compiled a few of our favorite websites related to Children’s Health, Safety, and Child Development. Please be sure to check out these websites because they are a great resource that can answer a wide variety of questions and address some concerns.
Health
WIC – Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is a federally funded food supplement and nutrition education program. It serves pregnant and breast-feeding women, infants younger than one year, and children up to the age of five who are at risk due to inadequate nutrition.
USDA FOOD PYRAMID- A great resource and healthy eating guide for toddlers, preschoolers, school-agers, and great recipes for adults. This website is a reminder to find your healthy eating style and build it throughout your lifetime. Always remember everything you eat and drink matters!!!
Safety
TIPS – Kids are going to fall, crash, slip and tumble. It’s all part of being a kid, and we wouldn’t want it any other way. But there are little things we can all do to ensure that kids avoid the more serious injuries that can lead to disabilities and even death. Please check out this website for safety tips and please be sure to sign up for email alerts to get the latest safety tips delivered right to your email.
Child Development
LEARN THE SIGNS – The early years of a child’s life are very important for his or her health and development. From birth to 5 years, your child should reach milestones in how he plays, learns, speaks, acts and moves. Please check out this website to track your child’s development and act early if you have a concern.
Early Childhood Programs
The Shaker Heights City School District offers high-quality early childhood programming intended to meet the needs of our community.
Shaker’s early childhood programs are the only programs in the state of Ohio to incorporate the prestigious International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme philosophy with continuation in K-12. We have expanded our offerings to positively impact achievement and to better align with the District’s Educational Equity Policy.
Our goals in developing The Shaker Heights Schools Early Childhood Program are to expand instructional options available to students, to create more flexibility for entry age into our program and to align the Early Childhood Program with practices in our K-12 classrooms. For example, all classes will include both students who have been identified to have disabilities and those who have not been so identified. In addition, all of our preschool classrooms will continue to be located at Onaway, in order to facilitate collaboration and sharing of resources and staff.
The Early Childhood Program is looking for Peer Models for the 2023-2024 school year. With a commitment to provide an inclusionary educational setting for our students with special needs, the practice of including “peer models” in our preschool classrooms is used and recommended by the Ohio Department of Education. Peer models provide an excellent learning example for our students with special needs, and also benefit from a rich developmentally appropriate preschool exprerience with exposure to children with differences.
The criteria for acceptance as a peer model are the following:
- Children between the ages of 3 and 5 (must be 3 by September 30, 2023)
- Children must be toilet trained
- Children must live within the Shaker Heights City School District attendance zone
- Children must be willing and able to serve as peer models
- Children must demonstrate behavior within the typical range
- Children must have strong communication and social skills
If you believe that your child meets the above criteria, the next step is to have your child screened by our Early Childhood Program staff. To apply to be screened, please complete the application here. Please note, this is a request to be screened, not a guarantee of enrollment. The application for screening will close on March 10, 2023, at 5 p.m.
Once your application is submitted, you will be contacted to schedule a 1-2 hour in-house peer model screening, which will take place on March 17 at Onaway Elementary School from 9:45-11:15 a.m. and 12:30-2:00 p.m. This will provide the preschool team the opportunity to observe specific developmental skills that are essential to our program.
All information provided in the application is confidential and will only be used to help the preschool team get to know you and your child prior to the screening.
