Morris Enrichment Center (MEC) is an essential part of the Christian outreach program of Morris Memorial United Methodist Church.

Daycare is available from ages six weeks to age 12 years; Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Children are served breakfast, lunch and snacks.

1. The Very First Cyberweapon: Stuxnet Nuclear Strike

There aren’t many cyber attacks that books have been written about. Yes, what is there, they can generally be counted on the fingers, and the most famous of these books is Countdown to zero day by journalist Kim Zetter. This book – with Kim’s meticulousness and careful fact-checking – tells the story of the most notable cyberattack in their history: the Stuxnet malware, which in 2009in 2007 disabled Iran’s uranium enrichment centrifuges, setting Iran’s nuclear program back several years.

We also wrote about Stuxnet at 3DNews: here’s a conspiracy article by Sergei Vilyanov, here’s just a few news. In the computer world, this event was absolutely unprecedented. In short, the situation is as follows: in a nuclear center in Iran, due to a computer failure, centrifuges for uranium enrichment went beyond the permitted operating modes and physically collapsed. They were forced to increase the rotation speed above safe values by controllers controlled by special Siemens PLC industrial computers that are not connected to the Internet. And the computer worm Stuxnet was to blame.

How did the malware get on machines not connected to the network? How did it avoid detection, even though, as it turned out later, when the anti-virus companies took down signatures and wrote detections, the worm infected about 200,000 machines? Why did nothing happen on all these machines, while in Iran the worm suddenly began to act? How was it managed when the computer on which the worm modified settings was not connected to the Internet?

You can answer these questions for a long time – which, in fact, Kim Zetter does in his rather thick book. And at the same time, he tells how the small Belarusian company VirusBlokAda was the first to discover the malware, how two anti-virus giants, Symantec and Kaspersky Lab, joined the investigation, working 24/7. They studied the malware for a long time – and found out this.

Of course, everything is complicated with the attribution of the attack, but most experts agree that Stuxnet is a joint creation of the United States and Israel. And that it was created precisely in order to slow down the Iranian nuclear program. The worm used a whole bunch of zero-day vulnerabilities – that is, those that the developers of vulnerable software are not yet aware of – and carefully hid from any antiviruses. It spread by recording itself on removable media: apparently, it was on a flash drive that it was brought to machines that were not connected to the Network.

Stuxnet originally targeted five Iranian organizations, all involved in one way or another with the nuclear program. On ordinary computers, Stuxnet did nothing at all except multiply – and then to a limited extent. But if the worm understood that it was on a SCADA system that also had Siemens software installed, then it added its component to this software, intercepting communications between the computer and the systems it controlled. But again, the worm did not act in every such case, but only if motors with a speed of rotation from 807 to 1210 rpm were connected to the Siemens PLC controllers, and one of two specific manufacturers. Only in this case, Stuxnet began to do its dirty work – periodically increased the speed to 2000 rpm, which the motors could not withstand and broke. It was precisely such equipment with such characteristics that stood at the center of uranium enrichment in Iran.

At every step, the worm masked its actions and prevented detection and removal. It is also interesting that there was an additional infrastructure around Stuxnet: two command & control servers were raised to update the components – in Denmark and in Malaysia. Since the worm did not hit the right machines right away, it was improved and tuned up several times along the way. But in theory, Stuxnet could do without C&C servers: it was designed to operate autonomously.

Stuxnet turned out to be the most complex malware that many antivirus companies have ever encountered. In the world of cyber threats, it was a real work of art – very dangerous, but almost ingenious. Actually, after the advent of Stuxnet, people started talking seriously about such a phenomenon as cyber weapons. And although many information security companies try to use this term less often, usually talking about APT (advanced persistent threats) instead, it has become impossible to deny the existence of cyber weapons after Stuxnet.

2. The most obvious attack: a hacked “Jeep”

Andy Greenberg was driving his Jeep Cherokee at a speed of about 110 km / h when something was wrong with the car. The air conditioning system suddenly began to blow cold air at full power, the radio switched itself and played hip-hop, the wipers began to crawl on the glass with all their might, and streams of washer poured from the nozzles on the hood. Well, then on the display of the multimedia system appeared the image of two hackers whom Andy knew well – Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek. The couple broke into Greenberg’s Jeep.

No, the hackers didn’t have a grudge against a Wired security journalist. It’s just that Miller and Valasek were able to hack the Cherokee so that it could be remotely controlled via the Internet – and, by joint agreement, demonstrated this to Greenberg as clearly as possible. Remote control means not only changing the music, but also disabling the brakes, turning the steering wheel and pressing the gas: Andy also managed to experience all this in his own skin, when his car suddenly turned the steering wheel on its own and slid into a ditch, however, after slowing down. If the hackers wished to kill the journalist, they could easily implement this, but they definitely did not have such an agreement with Greenberg.

The Jeep break-in in 2015 is the first attack on a car, showing how serious the consequences can be. It was after Greenberg published his paper, and Miller and Valasek gave talks about the hack at several conferences, that automakers finally began to think about car safety not only in the context of airbags, curtains, cockpit stiffness and the availability of emergency braking systems, but also and in terms of protection against cyberattacks. After this demonstration, many other hackers decided to try their hand at hacking cars – and found many more vulnerabilities. Particular attention, of course, was enjoyed by Tesla, which over the past three years has been repeatedly hacked by teams from different countries, forcing it to drive without a driver, open doors, brake hard, and so on.

3. Biggest Cyber Attack: Yahoo Hacked

If Stuxnet Infected 200,000 Computers, Miller and Valashek Hacked a Single Jeep ), then the next cyberattack in our collection was much larger. The then-popular Internet giant Yahoo was hacked and 3 billion accounts were stolen. THREE BILLION. It is as if almost every second inhabitant of the Earth had their account stolen.

In fact, it was not one hack, but two: in September 2016, Yahoo admitted that back in 2014, attackers gained access to 500 million accounts, and later, in December, said that in 2013 another billion. Well, a little later, in 2017, she admitted that it was not a billion, but a little more: all three in total.

Just then, the American giant Verizon was negotiating a purchase with Yahoo, and this helped bring down the price quite well: as a result, Yahoo cost Verizon $4.48 billion instead of $4.83.

Who broke Yahoo in 2013 has not been established. But for the 2014 hack, the US Department of Justice blamed two FSB officers and two hackers from Russia and Canada. Of the four, only a Canadian hacker, Karim Baratov, pleaded guilty and is currently serving a 5-year sentence for hacking. At the same time, the gigantic base of 2013 eventually surfaced on the darknet – either they got everything they needed from it and decided to sell it as unnecessary, or it was originally stolen for the purposes of resale.

Yahoo itself acted extremely clumsily in this situation – in 2013, it finally found a place for the position of director of security, which they took on Alex Stamos, but Stamos complained that sufficient funding was not allocated to the cybersecurity unit, and as a result in 2015- m went to Facebook*. Yahoo was also in no hurry to disclose data about the leak, just as it was in no hurry to forcibly reset user passwords, fearing a negative reaction. Well, silence is never good – and the example of Yahoo clearly shows this.

Those who used the same password for different services suffered the most from this attack – many of them were robbed of not only their mail, but also other accounts. If you needed an excuse not to do it, here it is.

4. Most Blatant Attack: Kevin Poulsen and the Stolen Porsche

“The 102nd person who calls us at the radio station will be given an incredible prize – a sporty beauty Porsche 944 S2” – something like this announcement could be heard on LA radio station KIIS FM on June 1, 1990 years. At the time, KIIS was raffling off one Porsche every week for two whole months, and Los Angeles was literally completely plunged into radio fever. Tens of thousands of people stuck to their receivers and rushed to call at the right time, hoping to win a sports car. This time, a certain Michael Peters called KIIS FM and won a brand new 944 at the price of $50,000.

True, no Michael Peters actually existed: behind this name was Kevin Poulsen, considered the number one hacker in the United States and by that time had already managed to hack the Arpanet network, the military predecessor of the Internet, and rummage through top-secret files. It was not for nothing that he got through to KIIS one hundred and second – Poulsen simply gained control of all the telephone lines of the radio station. At the right moment, he blocked all incoming calls except his own, and became the proud owner of a Porsche.

However, the happiness did not last very long – shortly after that, Poulsen was tracked down and imprisoned for five whole years. Well, then he decided to go on the bright side, first becoming the editor of SecurityFocus, and then moving to Wired, where he still works and is highly respected by the entire information security community.

5. The most sudden attack: DDOS against Dyn

On the morning of October 21, 2016, the world got acquainted with what it means to “break the Internet”: a huge number of services, from Twitter and Netflix to Amazon and Reddit, turned out to be inaccessible. Half of the US has found out that the Internet is no more. For some, everything worked terribly slowly, for some it didn’t work at all, including in Europe and Russia. The Internet “lay” for several hours – and the reason for this was a series of DDOS attacks on the DYN DNS provider, one of the largest in history.

There are several interesting points here. First, what exactly attacked Dyn: one of the largest DNS providers in the world was attacked in unison by … CCTV cameras, routers and other smart things. They did this, of course, for a reason, but because they were infected with the Mirai malware and turned out to be part of a very, very large botnet. Mirai was created specifically with the Internet of Things and the construction of giant botnets in mind: each new infected device starts knocking on others, finding vulnerable ones and infecting them already.

As a result, tens and even hundreds of thousands of smart things are under the command of the person who controls the botnet. And then this person can instruct controlled devices to simultaneously send requests to an arbitrary server – the latter simply cannot cope with such volumes and stops responding. Actually, this is how any DDOS attack happens, but it turned out to be very easy and painless to build a botnet on smart things: their owners do not notice anything, since there are definitely no antiviruses on video cameras and multicookers. But hardwired passwords are common, so they are easy to break.

Secondly, the cause of the attack is interesting. Cloudflare employees, who analyzed this incident in great detail, along with colleagues from Google, Akamai and a couple of universities, agreed that the fall of the Internet was just an accidental victim of battles between gamers who did not get along. In their opinion, the servers of game projects, for which Dyn was also responsible, were the target of the attack. And indeed, along with half the Internet, the servers of The Elder Scrolls Online, Roblox, Xbox Live and PlayStation Network (the latter is no stranger, but more on that later) went down. But it seems like gamers were aiming at the Minecraft servers – and yes, they fell too. It turns out that in order to disable the Internet, a quarrel between several states and the development of powerful cyber weapons are not needed at all. A few quarrelsome gamblers and the source code for the IoT contagion released to the public a few weeks before the incident are enough to drop everything.

A total of three attacks were made on Dyn on October 21, each crashing the Internet for about two hours. To Dyn’s credit, it is worth noting that the company very quickly – within one day – learned to deal with such DDOS, and as a result, the attacks stopped. But Mirai hasn’t gone anywhere – there are still thousands and hundreds of thousands of vulnerable devices, and besides, the source code is being finalized, releasing new malware. Its creator seems to have been caught, but this is not certain: he admitted involvement in the attacks, but whether he alone developed Mirai is unknown.

6. Attack that claimed lives: Hacking Ashley Madisson

In Russian (and not only in Russian) there is a slightly dubious saying “A good leftist strengthens a marriage.” Whether you share this opinion or not, but the saying exists, which means that there are many who agree with it. Dating sites are full of married men and married women who want… shall we say, new sensations. At one time, a special site was created for such people – Ashley Madison.

And of course, over time it was hacked. It happened in 2015, by that time about 40 million people were registered on the site. The figure is very modest by the standards of Yahoo or LinkedIn leaks, but the effect of the hack was monstrous. Apparently, at first the hackers who gained access to the database used it themselves for blackmail, and then, having played enough, they posted it in public access – with the ability to search by e-mail addresses.

That’s when things started going big. Many users received emails with content like “I know everything about who and where you cheat on your spouse, and I will publish everything if you do not pay me $1,000.” In the case of well-known high-ranking officials and businessmen – and there were also such people – the amount, of course, increased.

No one counted the number of marriages that broke up because of this leak, but there are clearly a lot of them. Definitely tens, maybe even hundreds, maybe even thousands. Perhaps these couples would have divorced anyway, but the leak clearly spurred people to take action. Worse, it also claimed several lives: there were those who could not cope with the shame and decided to take their own lives.

Ashley Madison continues to function to this day. That is, there is still demand, and the history of people does not seem to teach anything.

7. The darkest attack: Black Energy against electricity

At 15:30 on a cold winter day on December 23, 2015, the lights suddenly went out in the Ukrainian city of Ivano-Frankivsk. The Soviet people are used to this business, but everything was a little unusual here: 30 substations went out of order at the same time, leaving about 230,000 people without electricity at once.

At the same time, immediately before the shutdown, substation operators could observe absolutely mystical events: the mouse cursor suddenly crawled across the screen, crawled to the program that controls the relay, activated it and opened the circuit, turning off the substation. And then another. And when the operator in the Prykarpattyeoblenergo company, waking up, tried to stop it, he was simply thrown out of the system.

The same events, but on a smaller scale, took place in two other companies responsible for electricity supply – Kyivoblenergo and Chernivtsyoblenergo. In some parts of the Ivano-Frankivsk region, power supply was restored only after 6 hours.

This was no accident. On the contrary, it was a carefully planned cyberattack that began with spear phishing, continued with hackers infiltrating the networks of energy companies, and ended with a massive power outage. Experts believe that the attack was carried out by a group of hackers known as Black Energy and Sandworm. But as to whether this grouping is a cyberarmy of some state or hired cybercriminals, many experts prefer not to speculate. Attribution of cyberattacks is a complicated and extremely thankless task. Some, however, are sure that this is the work of the notorious Russian hackers.

8. Biggest Attack: The WannaCry Epidemic

It’s no secret that cyber weapons exist. This is also known thanks to the ShadowBrokers hacker group, which stole the tools of another group, Equation (there are fairly reasonable suspicions that Equation is related to American intelligence – the NSA). First, the hackers tried to sell what was stolen, and then, when no one bought anything, they simply posted all the exploits in the public domain. What, of course, attackers of various sorts took advantage of.

This is how WannaCry was born, a worm consisting of rather poor encryption code and a powerful EternalBlue exploit that used a zero-day vulnerability in various versions of Windows to spread. When they say “zero-day vulnerability”, they mean that no one was aware of this vulnerability before. Including the development company, which for this reason did not fix anything: in order to release a patch, you must at least know what to patch.

Many experts agree that the WannaCry worm escaped when its creator could not keep it in the test environment – and as a result, an unfinished ransomware worm broke into the Internet, knocking on remote computers indiscriminately, penetrating in them through a vulnerability in Windows and encrypting the entire contents of the drives. And then spread further and further, to the following computers. It looked like a domino effect – only not one domino at a time, but in all directions at once.

At the same time, ordinary cryptographers always offer an option: pay the attacker – and he will send you a decryption code so that you can return the data. WannaCry also offered this option … only it was impossible to decrypt the files. Either it was a bug in the code – another argument in favor of the theory of an escaped worm, or WannaCry was immediately planned as a destructive weapon for all civilizations connected to the Internet.

The epidemic was stopped in the most amazing way. Young researcher Marcus Hutchins, known as Malwaretechblog, like many other researchers around the world, rushed to analyze WannaCry to understand how to protect against it, how it spreads, whether files can be decrypted, and so on. And he discovered that, before encrypting the drive, the malware for some reason sends a call to some non-existent domain on the Internet. “What happens if I register this domain?” thought Hutchins. And registered. And I found out that after that, the malware no longer does anything: that is, it does not stop spreading, but it no longer encrypts disks.

So Hutchins stopped the epidemic and briefly became a world hero. And a little later, he was arrested by the FBI because at a very young age he managed to write the code for banking Trojans himself, and later switched to the bright side – but that’s another story.

Since then, however, WannaCry has been improved: the call to the domain has been removed, other bugs have been fixed – and the worm is still terrorizing the planet. But Microsoft released a patch pretty quickly, so most PCs are now immune to WannaCry.

9. Most Expensive Attack: NotPetya/ExPetr Epidemic

The ShadowBrokers hackers did a great job of annoying the public by making the Equation gang’s expensive and complex tools available to the public. It was difficult to oppose these exploits at that time: anti-virus companies and software manufacturers frantically wrote at least some detects and patches, and users, in a typical user-friendly manner, were in no hurry to install all this. What kind of security is there, it still works. Until the thunder breaks out, the peasant will not cross himself.

The thunder in the form of WannaCry died down, someone even installed patches, but another epidemic soon followed: an unknown ransomware spread using EternalBlue and EternalRomance exploits, again encrypting everything in its path and spreading across the planet at breakneck speed. At first, the researchers decided that this was a modification of the already well-known – and rather unpleasant – Petya ransomware. But then they came to the conclusion that it was not him after all – so this malware was named NotPetya.

The problem with NotPetya was that patches from EternalBlue did not save in this case. That is, they would save if they were installed on every single machine in the local network. And if not, then NotPetya, using the Mimikatz utility, climbed into the memory of an unpatched computer, extracted passwords for other machines from there, and infected them already.

In fact, the story of WannaCry repeated itself, but still, researchers consider this attack very different from the first. If WannaCry is considered to be more of a natural disaster, then NotPetya is a targeted attack. There is an opinion that it was originally aimed at Ukraine – someone infected an update package for the M.E.Doc program, which a significant part of Ukrainian companies use for document management and tax reporting. The program in many Ukrainian organizations automatically downloaded the update – and there it encrypted all Windows computers.

But the matter did not end there – and the NotPetya epidemic spread to Russia, Europe and beyond, spreading all over the world as a result. Many large companies suffered from NotPetya, including a very serious blow, for example, to one of the largest sea carriers, Maersk. Maersk IT people could literally watch a black wave rolling through the office – one after another, computer monitors turned black, and they displayed a typical message demanding: “pay $ 300 in bitcoin equivalent, and we will decrypt your data.”

But it was useless to pay, as in the case of WannaCry: NotPetya encrypted the data irrevocably, that is, in the classification of antivirus experts, it was no longer a ransomware, but a viper. The main difference is that ransomware is a weapon used by small criminals for profit, while wipers are usually weapons of larger fish, governments or corporations, whose task is to cause more damage.

And NotPetya caused a lot of damage. Maersk estimates its losses at $370 million, FedEx at $400 million, pharmaceutical giant Merck & Co at $600 million, for a total of more than $10 billion.

10. Attack that dragged on: Sony PlayStation Network hack

On April 20, 2011, gamers who wanted to play something online on their Sony PlayStation 3 and PSP consoles were unable to do so. I didn’t manage to play both on the 21st and 22nd – and so on until mid-May, and not somewhere in a separate region, but all over the world. PlayStation Network – the service responsible for all the online functions of PlayStation consoles – lay down tightly and was not going to get up.

At the same time, Sony, of course, was not silent. On the 20th, she simply announced that she was shutting down the PlayStation Network for a day or two. A day or two dragged on until April 26, when a company representative said that it was not so easy to deal with the problem and that yes, the PlayStation Network was hacked: the attack lasted from April 17 to April 19. The company publicly disclosed the hack only when an outside investigation revealed that more than 77 million user data had been leaked as a result of the hack.

To Sony’s credit, it’s worth saying that the company tried to smooth over the incident as best they could. She regularly informed users how things were going with the restoration of services (and along with PSN, the entertainment service Qriocity also lay down, and Hulu and Netflix did not work on the PlayStation), and after completing all the work to patch holes, restore services and put things in order gave all PSN subscribers 30 days of free use and a couple of free games.

True, the spoons, as they say, were returned, but the sediment remained: during the investigation and restoration, Sony shares fell by 20%, and then continued to fall for almost a whole year, by January 2012, having fallen in price almost twice. At one time, Sony called its estimate of losses: according to the company, the hack and three weeks of downtime of the PlayStation Network cost it $ 171 million. In fact, it seems that the losses were much greater, because this statement was made on May 23, 2011, and some class-action lawsuits from users or even states hit the company later, and it took quite a long time to restore trust.

It also turned out later that the attack on PSN had additional complications: on May 2 of the same year, attackers stole a database containing information about the data of 24.6 million users of the Sony Entertainment Network multimedia service, including 12.7 thousand numbers bank cards. The cards, however, for the most part were already outdated – at the time of the theft, only 900 were in operation, according to Sony. known as geohot, a man who has repeatedly written jailbreaks for PlayStation consoles.

Conclusion

Evaluating cyberattacks is difficult: it is almost never possible to accurately attribute them, the whole picture of a disaster is often not clear – especially in the case of something global like WannaCry. So this is my personal top 10, and yours may be completely different. Someone will remember the ILOVEYOU malware, someone will remember the epidemic of the Morris worm. Someone else will mention the Carbanak group that stole a billion dollars, or, well, the attack on Google in China that forced the company to leave the country. And everyone will be right in their own way.

I compiled this top 10 based on the interestingness and unusualness of the attacks – or their importance. As they say, that’s how I see it. And if you want to add something – welcome to the comments. Only phishing links and malware, please do not post.

Surrounded by the Cotswold Hills, the famous designer’s Kelmscott Manor is reopened to the public after two years of restoration

English designer, artist, poet and politician William Morris (1834-1896) called Kelmscott Manor, a silver-stone country house in Oxfordshire, “heaven on earth.” Until recently, visitors to the house saw his wife Jane’s room exactly as it appears to most. According to curator Cathy Haslem, it was “a whirlwind of willows.” The room was covered with wallpaper in the willow branch pattern, popular to this day, inspired by trees growing nearby on the banks of the Thames. On one of the walls hung a portrait of Jane framed by willow branches, painted by Edward Fairfax Murray after a painting by Dante Gabriel Rossetti. However, new research from the £4. 3 million Kelmscott Restoration Project has found that the decoration, while plausible, bears little resemblance to the original.

Built in the 17th century, the Morris family manor and a group of adjoining outbuildings with heritage status have been reopened to the public since April after the completion of a major restoration and conservation project. Thanks to him, in particular, new infrastructure facilities appeared on the estate, including an educational center in a building with a thatched roof. The Cultural Heritage Lottery Foundation allocated a grant for the implementation of this project in October 2018. The contents of all the rooms in the house were dismantled, studied and the exposition was reassembled. The lost elements were restored using traditional materials popularized by Morris, who founded the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings in 1877.

Paintings, photographs, diaries and letters have helped researchers identify items that have been in the vault since the 1960s, when Kelmscott was taken over by the Royal Society of Antiquities. Initially, in 1939, the building and its contents were inherited from May Morris, the daughter of a famous artist, Oxford University, but after 20 years of unsuccessful attempts to find tenants who would be content with a house without electricity and modern amenities, the university announced that it was no longer in able to contain it.

Finds on display in the refurbished display include a backgammon board disguised as a leather-bound book and candlesticks, identified by their descriptions of shedding soft light evening candles on Sheffield silver. As it turned out, the apparent simplicity of some tasks was deceptive, and modern restorers now fully understood the workers who, in 19In the 1960s, an attempt was made to replace only one step of the spiral staircase, as a result of which the entire structure collapsed.

Jane’s “green room” is much greener today, after flakes of paint from a Philip Webb-designed wood frame were traced back to its original dark green hue. However, in order to return the frame to its place, it was necessary to redo the ceiling, which had sagged so much over the past years that it no longer fit.

It was around Jane’s bedroom that the sad story of this house unfolded – her affair with Rossetti, who rented the Kelmscott estate together with the spouses in 1871. Morris wanted to keep the growing feeling between two of his most beloved people a secret. Rossetti stayed and created sensual graphic and pictorial portraits of Jane, while Morris set out to explore the wild landscapes of Iceland, collecting sagas and learning traditional crafts along the way. It became more and more difficult to communicate with Rossetti, and as a result, both the romance and friendship came to naught; the marriage did not break up.

After the renovation, the bedroom has nothing to do with the “willow tent” anymore. Morris’ remarkable photographs commissioned by Frederick Evans a few months before Morris’s death show the canopy bed (on which the future artist was born) was draped in playful printed chintz, now recreated with heavy fringe around the edge. The walls are indeed covered with Morris wallpaper, but this is a brighter “Blue Fruit” custom-printed from original woodblocks. Now the interior is much closer to Victorian notions of comfort.

Kelmscott is surprisingly remote, with a pub but no school or public transport. The money from the lottery – and with it the prospect of increasing the opening hours of the estate, and the expected increase in attendance – caused concern among some locals and even fear that their village would be turned into Disneyland. On one of the gates, there are as many as three signs with the requirement not to park on the exit. Manor manager Gavin Williams hopes that over time, electric shuttles will connect the estate to the nearby town of Faringdon, which is at least accessible by bus. He assures that visitors will be required to park at the entrance to the village and that all local residents are in fact fully supportive of the project.

Stuxnet: isolation of industrial systems no longer protects

The story of the Stuxnet worm stirred up the networking community four years ago. Who created it and for what purpose is not known for certain – there are suggestions that in this way the American and Israeli intelligence services wanted to slow down the Iranian nuclear program. The version is quite plausible: the malware really disabled centrifuges for uranium enrichment, throwing the Iranian nuclear program back several years.

Its creators managed to successfully attack computers not connected to the Global Network and carry out a large-scale sabotage. Then the worm (as many experts suggest) got out of control and began to actively spread, although it did not cause much harm to home and office machines – its target was industrial systems of certain types.

The first victims or “victims zero”

On November 11, the book “Countdown to Zero Day” by journalist Kim Zetter was published. Taking this opportunity, we also decided to publish some facts about the Stuxnet attack unknown to the general public. We will not focus on the earliest version of the worm – instead, we will focus on those of its variants that started the epidemic in 2009-2010.

The events of that time were restored thanks to an interesting feature of the malware: it stores in its body information about the name, domain, and IP address of the affected machine. Since the data is constantly replenished, this gives us the opportunity to restore the entire chain.

Symantec, which published “W32.Stuxnet Dossier” in February 2011, was able to establish that the spread of the worm began with five organizations (some of which were attacked twice – in 2009 and 2010), which were not named at that time. It took us about two years and over 2,000 infected files to install them.

“Domain A”

The first version of Stuxnet 2009 of interest to us (let’s call it Stuxnet.a) was created on June 22, 2009, and a few hours after compilation it infected a computer from the “ISIE” domain. It is unlikely that the attackers used removable media – in such a short time it is difficult to deliver it to the organization under attack.

It is impossible to unequivocally identify the affected organization from such scarce data. But with a high degree of certainty, it was possible to establish that it was Foolad Technic Engineering Co. (FIECO) is an Iranian company engaged in the creation of automated systems for heavy industries.

In addition to being able to affect centrifuge motors, Stuxnet was also endowed with a spy module, so FIECO is a very good target for its creators. They probably considered the company the shortest route to the final target, as well as an interesting target for collecting spy data on the Iranian industry – in 2010 the same computer was again attacked by the third version of Stuxnet.

“Domain B”

The next “patient” was attacked three times – in June 2009, and also in March and May 2010. It was from the second attack that the global epidemic of Stuxnet 2010 (aka Stuxnet.b) began. The “behpajooh” domain immediately identifies the affected Behpajooh Co. Elec & Comp. engineering. She is also involved in the development of industrial automation systems and is associated with a large number of different enterprises.

In 2006, Dubai’s Khaleej Times reported that a local firm was smuggling components to build bombs into Iran, citing Isfahan-based Bejpajooh INC as the consignee.

On April 24, 2010, Stuxnet moved from Behpajooh to the MSCCO domain name. The most likely candidate for compliance is Iran’s largest steel complex, Mobarakeh Steel Company (MSC), which has a huge number of machines in its fleet and is associated with various companies around the world. Thanks to these connections, a global epidemic began – for example, by the summer of 2010, the worm had already reached enterprises in Russia and Belarus.

“Domains C, D and E”

On July 7, 2009, Stuxnet infected the computer “applserver” in the NEDA domain. There were no problems with identification – we are talking about the Neda Industrial Group. Since 2008, the company has been on the list of the US Department of Justice and is accused of illegally exporting banned substances to Iran.

Simultaneously with Neda, another organization with the “CGJ” domain was also infected. After spending some time on the analysis, we found that, most likely, it was another Iranian company involved in industrial automation – Control-Gostar Jahed Company. The infection practically did not go beyond its borders, despite the impressive portfolio and extensive connections of the company.

The last zero “patient” is distinguished by the number of infected machines – on May 11, 2010, Stuxnet hit three computers at once in the “KALA” domain. Most likely it was Kala Electric (also known as Kalaye Electric Co.). The company is considered the main developer of the IR-1 centrifuges for uranium enrichment and one of the key structures in the Iranian nuclear program. It is very strange that it has not been attacked before.

Conclusion

With the incredible complexity of the striking part (it is not easy to disable uranium enrichment centrifuges) of Stuxnet, its propagation mechanisms were rather primitive. Moreover, apparently, at some point, control over the spread of the worm was lost – otherwise it is difficult to explain a large-scale epidemic, during which the virus was brought very far from the original targets of the attack.

What is an au pair?

An Au Pair is a young adult living abroad with a host family who takes care of their children and provides light housekeeping related to the children in exchange for accommodation and a minimum stipend. Au Pairs are treated as part of the family, joining in family meals and activities. Au Pairs often choose to be an Au Pair for the cultural experience and to improve their language skills.

Au Pair vs. Nanny: What’s the difference?

An Au Pair must meet the Au Pair Requirements to participate in a government-sponsored Au Pair Cultural Exchange Program, where local nannies do not. In the U.S., Au Pairs must be between the ages of 18 and 26 with demonstrable childcare experience. Nannies may be much older than Au Pairs. Au Pairs and host families agree to program rules and regulations defined by the government, which are overseen by the Au Pair Agency sponsors. Au Pairs are seeking a cultural experience and want to be part of the family. I have spoken to women who have decided not to separate careers from motherhood. The owners of their own business, a PR woman, an artist and an astrophysicist spoke about the consequences of such a decision and how to save work, income and sanity after giving birth.

Here’s what they suggest.

Zhenya is the mother of twins. It took a long time to get to motherhood, having along the way created a blog with her friends about supporting women with reproductive difficulties and opened her own advertising agency.

When your business is just launched and not all processes are fine-tuned, there is a lot of work. My birth was premature – although this is considered normal for a multiple pregnancy, so, waking up from anesthesia after a caesarean section, I took a laptop and continued to do what I had stopped the day before. Deadlines have not been canceled.

The first month my children and I spent in the hospital: they “matured”, slept a lot, and I sat next to me, pumped every three hours and worked. She continued to work at home while the children slept or walked on the balcony.

I remember this feeling: deep night, the whole house is sleeping, and I am typing a concept to the sound of a breast pump.

But I was motivated by new projects, goals, money, the taste of victory. It was a career take-off, it was difficult, but I enjoyed what I was doing. My husband, mother and mother-in-law helped me with the children, with the house – an au pair. But the nanny appeared later – when the children were one year and eight months old.

There were many fears: would I be able to work, not worsen my standard of living, and even buy a bigger apartment. My husband and I have accumulated an airbag for a year at the rate of spending 80,000-100,000 R per month. Expenses after the first year of children’s lives have grown dramatically: now a nanny costs 60,000 R per month. Plus doctors, massages, an osteopath, “developers”, clothes, apartment furnishing, travel expenses – everything is doubled, everything is duplicated.

Money is also spent on myself: for example, on doctors and examinations that I left for “after childbirth”. The body is changing, time is running out – I updated my entire wardrobe, having previously spent money on a stylist so as not to make thoughtless purchases. This also includes spending on additional education, courses, a psychologist.

How to get out of the decree

In the first year of my children’s life, my income was 200,000-300,000 R per month. With the growth of needs, our income with my husband also grows. New opportunities open up that, it seems to me, were not available within the framework of the office, stability and sufficient sleep. Apparently, the phrase “God will give a child – he will also give a child” works just like that. As a result, we managed to expand and move to a larger apartment.

Faina, director of external communications in a large international project, has three sons. The youngest was born with a heart defect and has already undergone two surgeries. Faina is a single mom, but she never went on maternity leave: she just took a two-week vacation for the period of childbirth, and then smoothly returned to work.

My children are now 11, 5 and 3 years old. I always tried to work at full strength, so the income did not change much. Immediately after the birth of my first child, I sat down and calculated how much I need to work to pay for a nanny and live comfortably. Then I worked as a journalist. I figured out how much I could earn for one interview, how much time I needed and how much I would have to pay the nanny. I managed to earn somewhere around 80,000-90,000 R per month, the nanny spent 25,000-30,000 R: then she took 200 R per hour.

I never thought that work would limit me. On the contrary, it manages to draw strength from it. I am spurred on by the idea that by working, I can give children more opportunities, a good education. My work is difficult, but interesting, I am constantly developing and learning. I also show this approach to children.

With each new child, the situation changed. When the second child was born and I went full-time, the nanny switched to a salary of 45,000 R. I went to a salary of 150,000 R, it gradually grew, then I started my own business – and the income grew to 250,000 R. There were months, when incomes could be increased to 400,000-450,000 R.

When my third son was born, he was found to have a heart defect and was given a disability, I changed my field of activity. Now I am working in an international project with a mission to improve the quality and service of medical care in Russia. The salary became less, but because of my son, I decided to change my life like this. One day I became very ill and almost died. When she gave birth to her first child, she thought that the disease would return.

Then the doctor said to me, “Don’t be afraid, mothers are given double strength.”

I go through life with this phrase. Mothers are given double, triple, quadruple powers. Children give us strength for everything – including finding, in some magical way, the time to earn money for them and to be around. And the sons, in turn, understand that their mother is working and try to take care and support.

Olga is a mother of two children and an astrophysicist. It turned out to be difficult to combine caring for two children and science: when the questions “what to cook for dinner” and “what diapers to buy” began to appear in my head more often than “why the Universe is expanding”, Olga decided to hire a nanny to keep up with everything.

Astrophysics is more than just a job for me. We are trying to uncover the secrets of nature, and each task is a comprehension of the unknown. Making a new discovery, I realize the greatness, beauty, harmony, logic and complexity of this world. And when I get a salary, I even feel a little ashamed, because to be honest, I have to pay for the pleasure.

In order to have time for work, I had to prioritize.

I realized that if you wash the floor once a week, and not once a day, then nothing will change. If children eat vegetables and fruits, nuts or scrambled eggs in the evening, and not culinary masterpieces, then there is nothing wrong either.

But it is important to sing a lullaby, read a fairy tale, or just cuddle with children at night, drink tea with your husband in the evening, discussing the past day.

Scientists can make good money, but it takes a lot of work. The rate of a scientist in Russia, depending on the position, field and university, is 5,000-50,000 R. An article in a scientific journal with a high rating can cost 100,000-200,000 R, which is shared by all co-authors: few articles are written alone. It takes 3-6 months to write an article if you work every day.

The main salary increase is scientific grants. The more articles a scientist writes, the greater the chance of getting a grant in the future. When working in a regular mode, being a participant in 1-3 grants is not a problem. But unfortunately, if you are, for example, a woman who went on parental leave for two years, it will be difficult to get a grant, because the mandatory requirement in all applications is the presence of 6-7 articles for the last 5 years.

Before my first child, my salary was 80,000-90,000 R per month. After giving birth, income dropped sharply. To re-apply for a grant, I had to work twice as much at a rate of 20,000 R per month. The entire salary went to the nanny, who sat with the child for 7 hours 3-4 times a week. A year later, I was very lucky, as if I won the lottery – I received several grants at once as part of different groups from different institutions and even from different cities. Income grew to 150,000-180,000 R per month.

How to stay at work after the decree if the employer is against it?

When my second child came, I couldn’t afford a maternity leave, because the grants have deadlines and no one will move them. It takes about 40,000 R per month for a nanny, another 10,000 R for a kindergarten and circles for the eldest son.

I started ordering food instead of cooking because I realized that my working hour was worth more than overpaying for cooked dinner. Now there is so much work that you have to spend every minute free from sleep and children on it. It’s exhausting, and I can’t solve scientific problems that interest me. But I am glad that now is such a financial period, because it is not known whether I will be lucky to receive several grants at once again.

Karina has two children who go to kindergarten. She is an illustrator, owner of a clothing brand, runs an online school, and writes books. Karina is one of those people for whom work is a way of life. She says that, while working up contractions, she simultaneously ordered a batch of “sizes” for a new collection of clothes. Both times I took a laptop and paints to the hospital, but I didn’t take a graphics tablet only at the cost of willpower.

After the birth of the babies, I continued to negotiate on the phone, promoted my brand, especially since newborns sleep a lot and you can work safely while walking with a stroller. And I got used to lack of sleep and a strange regime since the institute.

Now the children go to a private kindergarten, a Filipino nanny has started living in the house, who helps with the household. A nanny with accommodation costs 75,000 R, a kindergarten – another 45,000 R. Children are allergic, so you need to buy hypoallergenic food: this is another 40,000 R per month. I have a hobby in which we have invested a lot of effort and money – a vegetable garden: so that there is always natural food on the table.

In order to work calmly from home, hold meetings and workshops and not be afraid that someone from my family will turn paints over or breathe in caustic varnish, I set up a separate workshop on the site. A small house with floor-to-ceiling windows cost 800,000 RUR.

My week goes something like this. On weekdays, I draw, work in the workshop, answer letters, maintain social networks, and conduct classes in an online school. On weekends I spend all the time with my children, but sometimes I take a nanny to go to the movies or meet friends and take my mind off a busy schedule.

Before having children, I had the feeling of an infinite amount of time.

I didn’t use it optimally. Children turned out to be an amazing motivator – now my every day is subject to a tough schedule, there is less time, but I have more time to do.

I also know that I love to work and I won’t be able to do it if I don’t pay for the babysitter and the garden every month. This is also very motivating to maintain a certain level of income.

With the birth of children, I began to work much more – and my profit increased. Now the income from the store, courses and paintings can be 500,000 R per month. And in the first few years of my career, I earned almost nothing, I only invested in development, training, promotion.

I am happy that the Internet and social networks allow me to create, work and combine all this with children. A career only enriches motherhood and keeps you from slipping into the endless groundhog day. And children are also interested in my work: they are proud that I wrote a book and draw with me.

Humble yourself and not look for balance

Dasha is the mother of a little daughter and the founder of a marketing agency. She gradually figured out how to combine business processes with motherhood: a husband, grandmother or grandfather walk with a stroller while she defends a strategy in a tender, meets with clients or travels to the office on business. There is no babysitter yet: grandmothers are against it. Sooner or later she will appear, Dasha and her husband are considering options. 80,000 R per month is laid on a nanny.

When my daughter was born, the thought was spinning in my head: “I underestimated too much what happens after the birth of a child.” During pregnancy, I painted a rosy picture of the first months: my daughter constantly sleeps, does not require attention, and at this time I work calmly. How wrong I was!

My income has not changed since the birth of a child, because it does not depend on my personal participation in projects, but on the profitability of the business. Since we in the agency mainly reinvest profits, I have a fixed monthly salary of 300,000 rubles.

But expenses increased with the birth of a child. Although I am a professional marketer, I still fell victim to “baby” marketing: in the first months of motherhood, I made a lot of unnecessary impulsive purchases. We bought hyped Yoyo and Stokke strollers and soon sold them after hardly using them. Naturally, they lost money on this. If I had studied more reviews and had a more reasonable attitude to the desire to buy what my daughter is still too early to use, I would have saved at least 300,000 R a year.

Combining a child and work is not easy. The main psychological difficulty for me is the constantly oppressive sense of responsibility and the fact that there is not enough time for myself.

How to calculate maternity payments

I sometimes compare my former life with a sand castle that seemed indestructible until my daughter came and demolished its layer after layer with an iron scoop.

Now we just live and work in a new way. There will be no balance anymore – I just decided to admit it. As a guide, I use the advice of one of my clients: “Enjoy her infancy, this will only happen once and only with the first child.” I enjoy, but do not forget about my craving for work.

Humans as a species are extremely ill-equipped to parenting in isolation from society, says evolutionary biologist Nicola Raihani. In this sense, we are very different from our closest relatives in evolution, the great primates – we are closer to meerkats, ants and bees. Therefore, the pandemic has become a cruel test for us.

Taking away the TV remote control from my offspring, I sat on the couch, trying to mentally prepare for the near future.

It was March 2020. The number of cases of an unprecedented terrible disease in the United Kingdom grew like a snowball. The prime minister was about to impose a lockdown. Schools and kindergartens were about to close for quarantine.

Like millions of others, I was to become not so much a mother as a school teacher, and this prospect filled me with horror.

And not just me. My phone was constantly buzzing as our school’s chat room was flooded with panicked messages from parents asking each other how to combine daily work with explaining the rules of circumstance and long division.

During the months that followed, many adults experienced physical and psychological shock. Information about new lockdowns was interspersed with reports of parental stress, excruciating anxiety and depression.

Some have wondered: why is it so difficult? What could be more natural than to raise your own offspring without outside participation? After all, did you somehow manage without schools and after-school groups before?

As an evolutionary biologist, I don’t have the answers to all the questions about pandemic family crises. I can say one thing with certainty: a person as a species is extremely poorly adapted to parental work in isolation from society.

Collective parenting sets humans apart from other large primates and is more like the way of life of species that are much further away from us – the same meerkats and even ants and bees. However, it has given us invaluable advantages in the course of evolution.

Some species live in large colonies and raise their offspring together. But with our closest relatives, the chimpanzee, things are different.

Like people, they also form stable groups with an internal hierarchy, uniting individuals both related by origin and individuals who are strangers to each other by blood. But every mother chimpanzee takes care of her babies alone. With rare exceptions, no one helps her in this, including their father.

The same can be said about gorillas, orangutans and bonobos (pygmy chimpanzees). In addition, female primates do not go through menopause, so they remain fertile throughout their lives.

As a result, mother and daughter are often raising cubs at the same time, and grandmothers cannot help in raising their grandchildren, even if it occurred to them.

We are clearly not like that. From the moment of their appearance on Earth, people most of the time lived in large families based on mutual assistance, including in terms of caring for children.

In many modern societies, this is still the case. Fathers are more or less actively involved in parenting, although the degree of their involvement is highly dependent on the particular culture.

In addition, children, their upbringing and growing up, are influenced by many relatives – older brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, cousins and, of course, grandparents. Even very young children sometimes play an important role in supporting and protecting the younger ones. In short, babysitting is extremely rarely the responsibility of just one person.

Abby Page, an anthropologist who has studied the Aeta group of hunters and gatherers in the Philippines, argues that we are only getting closer to realizing the importance of family cooperation in the course of history.

For our children, play and useful activities are clearly separated from each other. Looking at the child of Aet, it is difficult to distinguish when he is playing and when he is picking a fruit from a bush for food.

According to Page, among peoples who lived by gathering, children were largely self-supporting from the age of four. Aet’s children also protect the younger ones from the dangers.

Abby Page recalls sitting on the dirt floor of a cabin with a four-year-old boy and his tiny sister one day when a scorpion crawled into the cabin.

The guest was completely at a loss and could not move, but the baby, fortunately, knew what to do: “He immediately jumped up, snatched a firebrand from the fire, smashed the scorpion and jumped for joy. ” He may have saved his sister’s life that day.

The experience made Paige think about what good parenting is. In the West, it is generally accepted that a parent or other responsible adult should not only look after the child, but also constantly entertain and entertain him, and if he does not do this, for example, because of employment, a feeling of guilt arises.

In her paper, Page looks at other effective forms of childcare that go beyond the ongoing involvement of parents.

In particular, the key feature of collective education is the active involvement of older brothers and sisters in caring for the younger ones.

Meerkats, for example, share their found food with them and sit with newborns in holes as nannies, and then teach them how to properly handle potentially dangerous hunting objects. Young female meerkats are even capable of producing milk for their sisters and brothers.

And in people at an early stage of development, the most important function of older children was to protect the younger ones from predators and other dangers, as in the case of the boy who crushed the scorpion.

Collective nurturing increases the resistance of species to adverse environmental conditions – for example, living in hot and dry regions of the planet. Primitive humans have successfully populated places with harsh climates and hard-to-get food where other large primates do not live.

Our anthropoid cousins, on the other hand, are strictly limited to regions with a stable climate and generous vegetation, resembling a giant natural bowl of salad. There are no fossil remains outside of it.

It is paradoxical, but true: our evolutionary inclination towards collective parenting played against us in the conditions of lockdown, making it mentally and physically harder.

Quarantine has deprived us of the support of grandparents, as well as schools, kindergartens and various hobby groups that successfully replaced the ancient structure of society.

We have decided that we must devote ourselves entirely to our little families, and we suffer because we are not able to do so.

Despite women’s emancipation, in the current Western conception of the family, the main responsibility for education still lies with mothers, who, according to expectations, were to become something like qualified nannies.

Rebecca Shore, professor of evolutionary anthropology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, argues that the self-sufficient nuclear family, consisting of a male breadwinner and a female caregiver (and their children), has not been the main type of hostel at all times and among all peoples.

In her opinion, such an idea is based not on historical facts, but on the personal experience of Western scientists and was formed in an era when “wealthy white men dominated the academic environment, who had before their eyes the example of their own families and thought that this was always the case” .

The term “nuclear family” originated in the 1920s, but the nuclear family itself is much older and developed during the Industrial Revolution, when a massive shift from farming to factory work created a freer lifestyle, says Professor Shore.

In her opinion, the ban on marriages between cousins and more distant relatives, which was actively supported by the medieval church and led to the drying up of branched families-clans, played a role.

In the 20th century, the idea of the omnipresence of the nuclear family was finally entrenched thanks to popular culture, especially cinema and television.

“The situation when parents and children live with each other separately from all other relatives is not so common,” says Professor Shor. “There are other family models in the world, united by the fact that someone helps parents raise their offspring This is true even for the Western middle class.”

Recognizing that we need help, we do not sign weakness. It just means that we are human.

Accommodation

Latvia provides free accommodation and food for citizens
Ukraine during the first 120 days for those who started receiving services
until May 24, and 120 days of accommodation and 30 days of free meals
for those who started receiving services from May 25.

Starting July 20, municipalities can decide on
provision of housing for up to 60 days, if in the relevant
the municipality cannot provide housing for up to 120
days. The municipality will be able to decide on placement for a period
up to 60 days only if 80% of the actual
number of Ukrainian civilians to be placed in
municipality, and it is not possible to provide housing in another
municipality.

Civilians
Ukraine are mainly accommodated in service hotels and
tourist bases, as well as in the families of residents of Latvia.

Separate groups of persons who, for objective reasons, may

Residents of Latvia who place free of charge in their homes
citizens of Ukraine, state support is provided.

Households can receive a compensation of 100 euros per
month for the first resident and 50 euros per month for each
subsequent person, but not more than 300 euros per month. In the presence of
an individual has several residential premises in which
Ukrainian citizens are accommodated, compensation can be obtained for
each housing in which citizens of Ukraine are accommodated. Statement of
compensation must be filed with the municipality within 14 days

the municipality pays a private person (landlord) a fee for
use of residential premises in the amount of 100% of the agreed
rent, which will include all payments related to
using residential premises, including utilities
payments, but not more than 300 euros per month for housing.
In this case, an individual does not charge rent from a resident
Ukraine. Support is available for up to 120 days, but no longer than 31
December 2022.

social assistance for people with disabilities can be obtained,
if a citizen of Ukraine has lived in Latvia for at least three months
from the date of issue of a long-term visa or residence permit. For

three or more children under the age of 18, persons over 18, but

Ukrainian refugees registered as self-employed in
tax register of the State Revenue Service (SRS), may
apply for a one-time allowance for
self-employment (500 euros) at the State Employment Agency
(GAS). You must apply within one month
after registration with the SRS. If a Ukrainian refugee
registered with the SRS until September 24, 2022, an application for
benefits must be submitted to the GAS within one
months from this date, i. e. until October 23, 2022
(inclusive). The benefit will not be given to those who

Finance

From September 5, it will be possible to exchange the Ukrainian hryvnia for the euro.
Currency exchange will be available at the branches of “Industra Bank” in Riga and four cities of Latvia and “Rietumu banka” in Riga.

Commission for exchange operations is not charged;
the exchange will be carried out only for banknotes with a face value of 100,
200, 500 and 1000 hryvnias;
badly damaged banknotes are not subject to exchange;
the maximum amount that one Ukrainian can exchange
a refugee, is 10,000 hryvnia;
all Ukrainian refugees registered in Latvia can
exchange money.

VISA and MasterCard payment cards issued by Ukrainian
banks, work in Latvia, but technical problems are possible.
These payment cards can also be used to withdraw money from
ATMs.

Citizens of Ukraine can open payment accounts free of charge in
most Latvian financial institutions.

To open an account and issue a payment card, you must personally

exchange, and researchers can work in Latvian
research institutions, receiving the same

From September 1, 2022, minor citizens of Ukraine
receive education in Latvia in the Latvian language. At the level
pre-school education or basic education child also

If you want to care for children under 8 for more than 2 hours a day, you’ll need to register with one of the following:
- Ofsted
- a Childminder Agency (CMA)
For this, you’ll usually need:
- a home-based childcare course that covers the Early Years Foundation Stage framework
- a paediatric first aid course
- child protection training
- a food safety qualification
You may have to do a basic skills test to show that you have the minimum standard of English and maths needed to support the educational development of children in your care. You’ll also need to pass an assessment of your home and any equipment you will use.

Childminder agencies can provide pre-registration training to become a childminder. They also have information on registering and further training once you are a registered childminder.

Your first step is to look at Ofsted’s pre-registration briefing on becoming a childminder or contact a Childminder Agency (CMA).

It’s a good idea to do some research where you live to find out if there is a demand for childminders in your local area.

Childminders | nidirect

Registered childminders are self-employed carers who look after children in their own homes. They must be registered with the local Health and Social Care Trust if they’re paid to look after children they aren’t closely related to for more than two hours in the day.

What a childminder does

A childminder can care for up to six children under 12, including their own. Only three of these may be aged under five and usually only one child below one-year old. There are some exceptions, for example, twins.

Every year the local Health and Social Care Trust inspects the childminder and their home to assure the standard of care the childminder gives children. The police check everyone aged over 10 living in the childminder’s home.

Many childminders are members of Northern Ireland Childminding Association (NICMA). They can get guidance and training from NICMA.

Using a registered childminder

The advantages in using a registered childminder are:

they’re inspected annually by the local Health and Social Care Trust
they have their own public liability insurance
they can be flexible about their working hours
they can provide care, fun and learning in a home setting
they can care for children of different ages together
they’re suitable for babies and children under two, who need to develop a close relationship with an adult through one to one care

Before you employ a childminder, you should check:

they’re registered with the Early Years Team in the local Health and Social Care Trust and have insurance
their home is safe with plenty of play and learning opportunity
the childminder has properly-fitted car seats in case your child will be in their car
the agreed contract covers hours, pay, illness and holidays

Asking a childminder about childcare

To find out about the childminder’s standard of childcare, you should ask them:

to give you contact information for parents of other children they look after so you can follow up their references
how long they’ve been childminding and how long they’ll continue
ages of the children they look after
their routine for looking after children and activities they’ll do with your child
about food they provide and if this is included in their fee
if other adults will also be in the house
who the childminder would call in an emergency
about sleep, potty-training and setting boundaries on behaviour, it’s important to agree the approach for your child
how the childminder fits in household work when they’re looking after your child, including shopping or taking other children to school
the costs, hours, holiday pay and other conditions
for their last inspection report

There are different financial benefits and support available to help parents pay for childcare.

If you’re a working parent with children under 12 (or under 17 for children with disabilities), you can open an online account to pay for registered childcare. For every £8.00 you put in the account, the government adds £2.00. You can get up to £2,000 for one child. If your child has a disability, you can get up to £4,000 for one child.

Childminders care for babies and children, aged up to 16. They usually work in their own homes.

The Work

You could be:

making sure the children you care for are safe and well looked after

changing nappies, cooking, feeding and washing the children

giving emotional support to children, making sure they are secure and happy

encouraging children to learn through books, toys and games

taking young children to parks, toddler groups and playgroups, and encouraging them to play with other children

taking older children to nursery and school and collecting them at the end of the day

respecting the wishes of children’s parents about daily routines, diet and religion

negotiating contracts and fees with parents.

You might specialise in looking after children with special needs.

The figures below are only a guide. Actual pay rates vary, depending on:

Childminders are self-employed and therefore negotiate their own rates of pay and working conditions. They are responsible for their own tax and National Insurance (NI) payments.

There is no national rate for fees but across Scotland current rates advertised are between £3.50 and £5.50 per child per hour. Most childminders offer a reduced rate if they look after more than one child from the same family.

In 2018 the average hourly rate for a childminder in Scotland was £4.29 per hour (from the Scottish Childminding Association Pay and Conditions Survey 2018, the latest report published).

Conditions

You would be self-employed, usually working from your own home, so work arrangements vary.

Young children need a lot of physical care such as feeding and toileting.

Children can be noisy and demanding.

You would probably have pre-school children all day and school age children before and after school, so hours can be long, including early mornings, afternoons and evenings.

To some extent, you can set your own hours of work but you might need to be flexible and negotiate with the parents of the children you care for.

Depending on your home, you can care for no more than 6 children under 16 (including your own children). No more than 3 of these may be of pre-school age and no more than 1 should be under 1 year old.

If you provide a food service for the children, you will have to register with the local authority’s environmental health department.

You could choose what ages of children to care for – some childminders do not take babies under 2, some do not take children over 12.

Getting In

You do not always need formal qualifications but previous experience with children is very desirable.

If you want to study, you could take an NC in Early Education and Childcare or SVQs in Social Services (Children and Young People) (see Early Years Practitioner).

The Scottish Childminding Association (SCMA) run a Childminding Induction Support Programme. This costs £200, but you may be able to fund this with an Individual Training Account (ITA).

You must be registered with the Care Inspectorate to work as a childminder. Registration can take between 3 and 6 months.

The Care Inspectorate will interview you and visit your home to check that it is safe for children. They may ask you to put in, for instance, stair gates. You have to meet fire regulations.

You will require a satisfactory criminal record check from Disclosure Scotland to show that you are suitable for this type of work. Contact Disclosure Scotland for details on the type you would need. This applies to all members of your household aged 16 and over. The Care Inspectorate will do further checks each year.

You must be at least 18 years of age.

You must be fit and healthy to supervise and care for children.

You may wish to do further training to get a full qualification in childcare and education (see Early Years Practitioner). This will develop your skills but will not change the work you do as a childminder.

You may choose to be a childminder if you have young children and then move into work as a nursery nurse when your children are older.

Remember that when you set up as a childminder you will have to pay for:

your registration with the Care Inspectorate

insurance to cover you in case of any accidents

possible alterations to your house or garden to make them safe

equipment, including high chairs, toys, games, books, smoke alarms, fire guards and fire blankets

first aid training.

Total start up costs could range from £80 to £500, depending on how much you need to do to comply with regulations. Depending on where you live, you may get a grant to help with some of these items.

The work of an educator is painstaking and everyday, requiring a lot of love, patience, strength and full dedication. We were convinced of this by visiting a musical lesson in kindergarten No. 134 of a combined type with the Tatar language of education and training in the Kirovsky district of Kazan. Alsu Ismagilova, the music director of this preschool institution, told the KZN.RU portal about the peculiarities of working with children on her professional holiday.

“On the first day of work, the kids looked at me with open mouths and wanted me to play for them non-stop”

Alsu Dayanovna has been giving a piece of her soul to kids for over 26 years. “I was born in Aktanysh. Since childhood, I loved creative activity and did everything that was connected with music, ”said the teacher. In the fifth grade, she enrolled in a dance club, in which piano lessons were held 2 times a week. “Unfortunately, the classes lasted only 15 minutes, and I wanted to do much more,” recalls Alsu Dayanovna. “Besides, from the very first lesson I realized that I wanted to play the piano fluently.” There was no instrument at home, and the future music director began to slowly prepare her mother for her to enroll her daughter in a music school. “I had to use my ingenuity – in the evening after school I sat down in the house in the most prominent place, opposite the cast-iron battery, and began to“ play ”like the piano, and instead of notes I put different magazines in front of me,” Alsu Dayanovna shared her story. The trick worked, and after a while, her mother enrolled her in a music school, and six months later, a piano appeared at home. “Happiness at that moment knew no bounds. Many boys and girls had balalaikas, dombras, wind instruments at home, and I had a large keyboard instrument. For a 6th grade student who fell in love with music, this was one of the highlights of her childhood,” she said.

After studying at a music school for almost 5 years, the future music director entered the music department at the Leninogorsk Pedagogical College. From that time on, she realized that she wanted to work with children. “During my studies, I had a lot of practice in various schools and kindergartens. But I always tried to get practical training in preschool educational institutions, as I really liked working with young children. Then I realized that if you show children what music is from an early age, then perhaps at that moment they will want to become musicians and begin to study. Thus, another talented performer or composer will appear in the republic,” the teacher noted.

After graduation, Alsu Dayanovna returned to her native Aktanysh, where she began teaching music at secondary school No. 1. After working for two years and gaining the necessary experience, she moved to work as a music director in kindergarten No. 4 “Petushok”. “I remember my first day very well. There were about 30 kids in my class, and the youngest was only 6 months old. They looked at me with their mouths open and wanted me to play for them non-stop. At that moment, I realized that I was in the right place. 26 years have passed since then, and nothing has changed for me – I know that I am doing my job, ”Alsu Ismagilova emphasized.

In 2006, our heroine moved to Kazan and got a job as a music director in kindergarten No. 365 in the Aviastroitelny district. “Moving to the capital has become a landmark and emotional event. At first, the kids and parents did not want to let me go and urged me to stay. However, I decided that I want to develop creatively and improve my skills, thereby giving the children much more than it was then, ”she said. Working in a kindergarten, Alsu Dayanovna graduated from Kazan State Pedagogical University with a degree in music teacher. “Thanks to new knowledge, in addition to the main program, I began to introduce various methods into my work in order to further interest the child and bring out creative qualities in him,” recalls the teacher.

After moving to the Salavat Kupere residential area, Alsu Ismagilova got a job in kindergarten No. 134 of a combined type with the Tatar language of education and training. “At that moment, a new page in my creative activity began for me. The new kindergarten has absolutely all the conditions to make music with children,” she said.

During this time Alsu Dayanovna learned to play many musical instruments. “If they tell me to play a part in an orchestra of folk instruments, I can sit down at least for a balalaika, even for a button accordion or an accordion,” she answered smiling.

Today Alsu Dayanovna teaches music to 7 groups, each of which has about 30 children. She noted that the role of a music director is, first of all, the organization and conduct of music classes in accordance with the training program, however, she builds any lesson based on her methodological ideas, thanks to which she manages to captivate the child and he shows a desire to continue to study music. “Each child is unique, just like a musical instrument. For some children, the piano is suitable, for others, percussion, wind, strings. It is important to understand this and help the kids make the right choice,” our interlocutor noted.

In addition to classes, Alsu Ismagilova constantly holds leisure evenings and various cultural events within the walls of the kindergarten. “Practically all parents try to come to such events to see how talented their children are,” said Alsu Dayanovna, explaining at that moment to the child how to choose the right chord.

Alsu Ismagilova noted that the profession of a music director is interesting because it requires being a musician, artist, screenwriter, director, costume designer, actor, make-up artist and sound engineer. “It is on the ability to master all these skills that the musical and creative development of children and the atmosphere of joy in kindergarten depend. Children, unlike adults, are very sincere and emotional. They are trusting and look at the world with open eyes. They exist in a state of complete openness, they have endless magic,” she stressed.

The musical director in kindergarten is a special profession, says Alsu Dayanovna. “The main life hack in our work is a good mood, an open heart and a smile. With this attitude, I go to work every day and meet the children, ask them how you are, how the evening went, how your mood is, she shared. – Sometimes you come to work – the mood is not very good. And the kids will hug you, stroke you, someone will make and bring a gift with their own hands, someone will sing and dance a song. And the world has already begun to play with new bright colors.

When asked how the educator manages to cope with a group of kids, she noted that being a tutor is not easy, there are difficulties and failures. The main difficulty is the colossal responsibility for children. “Parents bring their children to us, and from that moment you become their temporary mother. And like a real mother, you will treat him as the best and only. The total number of children in groups never frightened me, because every day they energize, give joy. Every time I have classes, they become little artists, ”said the music director.

“In kindergarten, every day is different”

“Kindergarten is the most amazing country, and its inhabitants are children. Every day is not like the previous one,” Alsu Dayanovna emphasized. Her working day starts at 7:50 with morning exercises accompanied by musical accompaniment on the piano. “Every day we try to play a new piece that the child has not yet heard, thereby expanding his horizons,” she said. Classes begin at 9:00, where the music director teaches children to sing, dance and play musical instruments. “Children of different ages come to classes and the ability to unite them into one friendly musical group plays an important role. I try to make every minute of the child’s stay in class exciting, useful and meaningful,” she said.

Another important part of the work was the preparation for various events. “Every day for me is a series of preparations for matinees, musical evenings and various city and musical competitions. Pupils of Alsu Dayanovna have repeatedly become laureates of creative events, among which are “Tatar Malae”, “Tatar Kyzy”, “Symphony of Mastery”, “Melodies of the Volga Peoples” and many others.

“These competitions, and even more so the victories in them, inspire children, and they begin to engage in creative activities more diligently,” said the music director.

Alsu Dayanovna also conducts classes in a speech therapy group, studies and prepares folk holidays for children within the walls of a preschool institution.

Faria turned down the opportunity and return to the Bulldogs for his junior season. He wasn’t ready to leave the community that made his transition to the country smooth and full of hope.

“I felt a connection with my teammates and my coach,” said Faria. “This is a once in a lifetime thing and I wanted to stay. Rockland is my family.”

It was no surprise to Kimball that MLS NEXT came calling after Faria posted 29 goals last fall as a sophomore, leading Rockland to an 18-2-1 finish and the Division 4 state semifinals.

The striker was named a South Shore League All-Star and an Eastern Mass All-Star. In the All-Star game coached by Kimball, Faria recorded a hat trick in a showcase filled with the state’s best.

“It raised a lot of eyebrows,” said Kimball. “I told him going to academy may be the best thing for your progression. But he told me there’s something about this program and something about this team and I need to come back. He felt he had an obligation to this program and this town.”

In June, Faria was voted a team captain. Rockland graduated 14 players so Faria’s role as an upperclassmen is magnified this season as he helps usher in a new crop of players.

Kimball said he was blown away by Faria’s leadership in the first game of the season last Wednesday. The Bulldogs scored a 4-0 win over Holbrook and freshman Gabe De Souza netted a hat trick. Faria didn’t score that day, but he couldn’t have been happier for his new teammate.

“There was nothing but smiles from João, he was like a proud older brother,” said Kimball.

Added De Souza, “He was so proud of me and the team and I thought that was so cool. It made me feel glad he was our captain.”

Faria wasted no time opening his goal tally for the 2022 season, netting a career-high five goals a day later in Thursday’s 8-3 win over Cardinal Spellman.

His 29 goals last fall were one short of the single-season program record set by Kimball’s younger brother, Joe, in 2016.

“We came so close a state title last year and João wants to bring that back,” said Kimball. “But he also told me he’s breaking my brothers scoring record this year. We joked about that but he’s fully capable.”

At 6-foot-2, Faria has a perfect combination of quickness, speed, and size, but it’s his powerful left foot that makes him one of the state’s top scorers. Some players simply have a knack for finding the back of the net, and Faria admitted he’s a natural born scorer, a byproduct of watching his father play in Brazil as a kid.

“I think it’s just natural from watching my dad play,” said Faria. “He was a striker too. I think I’m really fast. I can create for others or score for myself because of my shot.”

The transition from Brazil to Rockland wasn’t easy. Faria said he struggled with the language and making friends. But soccer was always an outlet, and once he got to high school, a bond formed between him, Kimball, and the Rockland program that made him believe soccer could be a part of his future.

“I was not comfortable at the beginning but coach made me feel at home,” said Faria.

Faria hopes to play in college in the United States or return to Brazil for a professional career. Kimball believes staying at Rockland will not impact those dreams.

“You don’t have to go to a prep school or academy to reach college or professional level,” said Kimball. “I don’t think this stymies him at all. It shows a lot about his character that he wants to stay in his home town and play with his friends.”

▪ Arlington reached the Round of 16 in last season’s Division 1 tournament, which served as the tip of the iceberg for the Spy Ponders. Finishing the regular season undefeated, the Spy Ponders’ lone loss occurred at the hands of the eventual state champion, Brookline, in a 1-0 result.

“I think the fact that we got to the round of 16 said a lot about our program to our players,” said coach Lance Yodzio, embarking on his 23rd year at the helm. “We want to duplicate that. This is where we want to be. Our focus and goal is it’s all about the process.”

With four returning starters inheriting leadership roles, role players from last season’s team step into starting roles. A three-year starter, senior Barnabas Kiss anchors the defense at center back as a Middlesex League All-Star. Senior Aidan Sheehan, the team’s leading goal scorer last season and a fellow league All-Star, kickstarts the attack. Senior Gus Kathan solidifies the midfield in a holding role.

The Spy Ponders came out of the gate flying, downing Middlesex League opponent Watertown, 3-0, behind two goals from Sheehan. A strong nucleus of frontline players present the Spy Ponders as a formidable foe yet again, not satisfied with past successes.

“The players ask themselves what they can do today to make themselves a better player, their teammates a better player, and make themselves a better person through the game of soccer,” said Yodzio.

I absolutely love my school! CCA is such a great environment to be in and whenever someone needs to talk to someone about something, there are always people available to talk to. I love knowing that my teachers love and support me; they pray for us constantly and are so kind and loving and very patient! CCA is a school I want to send my kids to one day. I thank the Lord for my school and everyone in it! Also, the education we are given is wonderful. The teachers take time to help us if we are struggling with work, and they are so forgiving! I’ve had my children at CCA for quite a few years. I love the education they receive, the solid Bible teaching and that they are loved, cared about and prayed for each and every day. I attended CCA for eight years and was very pleased with the Christian education I received. The teachers are caring, knowledgeable, and adequately prepared me for college. The high school Bible classes are taught by pastors of the church, Calvary Chapel, and helped me to develop a Biblical worldview. I would recommend CCA to any family looking for a school with sound Christian doctrine and a competitive education.

Rockland is a bilingual community located approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) east of downtown Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, part of the City of Clarence-Rockland. Rockland has a population of 11,099. ^[1] Most of the French-speaking community of Eastern Ontario lives here, as well as the cities to the east and the suburbs of Ottawa. Orleans to the west.

900 in 1840 with the development of the road to l’Orignal-Bytown. Prior to this, farmers relentlessly cleared forest areas to be able to farm the land, their only means of survival. In 1868, young entrepreneur William Cameron Edwards decided to establish a sawmill at McCall’s Point. Opening links to the Great Highway Then, in 1888, the transportation of timber and goods was allowed. Edwards, who held the lumber rights in the area and was also the first postmaster, named the place because of the rocky landscape. The post office dates from 1869year. ^[2]

In 1889 the mission carried out by Rev. Caron of Clarence Creek became a parish. The first priest of the new parish was Simeon Houdon, a native of Quebec. The first school opened in 1875 and the first high school opened in 1905.

The construction of a second railroad in 1908 connecting Ottawa and Hawkesbury greatly contributed to population growth. In fact, for 75 cents (return), people could go to Ottawa on business and return the same day. The sawmill owned by W. C. Edwards closed at 7 p.m.26 as a result of the economic upheaval that followed the First World War. Most of the population moved to Quebec to find work in sawmills in Hull and Gatineau. The economic recovery began in 1939 with the outbreak of World War II, and the return of soldiers after the war led to an increase in the population. Housing construction grew rapidly, creating a need for the expansion of water, electricity and sewerage introduced in 1964.

During the 1970s, Rockland was a small community of about 3,500 people. Since the beginning of the new millennium, there has been a rapid growth in housing construction. Until 2000, the number of new homes built was less than 60 or 70 annually, but between 2000 and 2010, the total number of new homes built was 2,185. ^[3]

Rockland is a fast growing community that is constantly adding new retailers and businesses to serve the community.

Rockland has local branches of major chains such as A&W, Boston Pizza, Tim Hortons, Canadian Tire, Metro, Dollarama, Nutrition Basics, Giant Tiger, Home Hardware, Your Independent Grocer, Alcohol Control Board of Ontario (LCBO), McDonald’s, Workwear Brand, 2Networkit.com Inc., Shoppers Drug Mart, SonXPlus, Roch Druin Auto Repair, St-Hubert, Gabriel’s Pizza, POP Shoes, RE/MAX, TSC, and Walmart.

In addition to many local restaurants, Rockland has the River Rock Inn, a hotel and a convention center.

Leisure

Rockland is home to the newly built 45,000 square feet (4200 m ² ) Recreation Center. The center houses the Rockland Library, the largest YMCA in the Ottawa area (with an indoor pool, state-of-the-art gym, numerous programs for kids/youth/families/seniorities) and a theater.

On July 8, 2009, the governments of Canada and Ontario jointly announced funding for the construction of a new sports complex and training center in Rockland. The center will help meet the sports and recreation needs of Clarence Rockland and Eastern Ontario by providing two NHL-sized ice rinks, two football fields, a baseball field and a running track, and enhancing recreational tourism in the region. The mixed-use complex will also enable the creation of an advanced hockey program for high school hockey players and will be used as a national training center for Hockey Canada. ^[3]

The semi-private Outaouais Golf Club has courses that are considered some of the most popular in the National Capital Region. Professionals from the Canadian Professional Golfers Association (CPGA) provide lessons on site and practice sessions are also available to all golfers.

Canadian International Hockey Academy (CIHA) is an ice hockey academy in Canada based in Rockland, Ontario. Over the 10 years of its existence, the coaches of the academy have helped hundreds of players realize their potential, three of the academy graduates got into the NHL draft.

According to media reports, residents of Monsey are taking self-defense lessons from battle-hardened Israeli soldiers following the recent machete attack on Jews celebrating Hanukkah and other anti-Semitic incidents.

On January 8, congregants gathered at a synagogue in Rockland County, where Israeli veterans who run the Herev Gidon Training Academy in Pennsylvania taught them how to use a variety of firearms. Jonathan Stern, director of the academy, told The Post that he wants people to openly carry guns in the synagogue, stressing: “As Jews, you have to start defending yourself because others aren’t going to do it for you.” He said that after the Dec. 28 machete attack on Hanukkah attendees, there was “unprecedented demand” for the “Herev Gidon” course, which means “Gideon’s sword” in Hebrew. “We can’t be sheep in the slaughter,” he told some 150 Jews, men and women, many of whom came from Brooklyn and other parts of New York. About a dozen participants filled out applications for a pistol or rifle after the training.

When asked about the potential danger posed by people who take up arms, Stern told lohud.com: “It’s actually the other way around. As long as these people are properly trained in the use of firearms (either by us or by other instructors) and comply with all relevant laws, this will undoubtedly make the community much safer. ” “When Jews are killed in the streets and in our synagogues, we can no longer afford to be helpless victims!” read a flyer urging people to sign up for “Israeli counter-terrorism training with firearms.”

Man accused of assault with machete, Grafton Thomas, 37, was charged with six counts of attempted murder, as well as assault and hate-motivated burglary.

Monsey resident Rivka Feiner said she already felt the change in her area after the attack. Now there is a security guard outside her child’s school and she has to show ID before picking it up. “We are the largest (percentage-wise) Jewish community of any district in the entire country. This is a terrible wake up call. People are not going to sit back and do nothing,” she told lohud.com. “As Orthodox Jews, we believe that prayers protect us, and helping people is another form of protection, but we do not hide our heads in the sand.”

Our Toddler classroom is located on the grounds of the Presbyterian church which is on the corner of Walker Ave. and Siskiyou Blvd. The Toddler classroom is located on the upper level and is adjacent to the playground. Since our move from the Lincoln elementary school we are only able to serve to ages 24 months to 3 years old. We also house a cooking program for our 2-3 year olds in our school kitchen. Our aim is to provide a warm, safe, developmentally appropriate environment for your toddlers, helping them succeed through the many changes they will experience. We spend our days helping the children learn how to engage in a respectful manner with the materials and with each other. While awakening the senses through exploration and art, we focus on the process, not the product.

As a condition of securing a license or Certificate of Life/Safety Approval, the sponsor or sponsor representative shall ensure that a Criminal History Record Information (CHRI) fingerprint background check is completed for himself or herself, and for all staff members at least 18 years of age who are or will be working at the center on a regularly- scheduled basis, to determine whether any such person has been convicted of a crime, as specified in P.L. 2000, c. 77 (N.J.S.A. 30:5B-6.10 to 6.17). The sponsor or sponsor representative and each staff member shall complete the electronic fingerprinting process through the vendor authorized by the State to conduct CHRI background checks through the Division of State Police in the Department of Law and Public Safety and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. First aid requirements are as follows: at least two staff members who have current certified basic knowledge of first aid principles and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), as defined by a recognized health organization (such as the American Red Cross), shall be in the center at all times when enrolled children are present. Fire prevention requirements are as follows: the center shall conduct fire drills at least once a month, as specified in the NJUFC. The center shall ensure that fire drills are conducted during each session provided at the center and that one fire drill per year is conducted during nap time, if applicable.
