Knoxville Webb School

Webb School of Knoxville is a private co-educational day school in Knoxville, Tennessee, enrolling students from nursery to twelfth grade. It was founded in 1955 by Robert Webb (1919–2005), grandson of Webb’s Bell Buckle School founder Sonia Webb. The current president of the Webb School in Knoxville is Michael McBrien.

History

Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian

In 1955, 36-year-old Robert Webb left the Webb School in Claremont, California for Knoxville, Tennessee, with plans to establish a third school in his family. ^[2] Webb’s grandfather, Sonia Webb, founded Webb’s Bell Buckle School in Tennessee Middle, ^[2] and his uncle Thompson Webb founded the Webb School in Claremont. ^[2] During the first school year, 4 students attended the new Webb school, but by the end of the year the number had increased to 11. ^[2] The first two years of school were spent in the basement of the Sequoia Hills Presbyterian Church. ^[2] The New School adopted the Latin Motto of the Webb School in Claremont: “Principes non homines”. ^[2]

Staub School

After his sophomore year, Webb found a new location for the school in the old Staub School, the brick building where the University of Tennessee Aquatic Center now stands. ^[2] This used to be a medical school which was poorly cleaned after use. It was not uncommon for students at the Webb School to find the remains of the building’s former occupants. At the time, Webb’s early sports teams did not yet have their own practice venues. During his time at Staub School, Webb took in the first female students, founding an affiliated Webb School for Girls, which operated out of the church building. ^[2]

West Knoxville

In 1959, Webb moved to its current campus location near I-140. ^[2] At the time of the Sequoia Hills, the site was considered “West Knoxville” and the new campus was just outside the city limits.

Coeducational

In the 1968 school year, Webb became coeducational and was reorganized into a junior and senior school. ^[2]

Middle School

In 1974, the school opened fifth and sixth grades to meet growing demand. With this addition, the school was now divided into a middle school which consisted of grades 6-8 and a high school with grades 9-12 classes. ^[2] The current high school principal is Valorie Baker. ^[3] and the current principal of the high school is Matt McDonald. ^[4]

Junior School

In 1998, a new elementary school opened in Webb. The new building now houses a kindergarten and students from grades one through five. The current Principal of the Junior School is Christy Wofford. ^[5] Webb School in Knoxville now consists of Junior School (K-5), Middle School (6-8) and High School (9-12). ^[2]

Nursery

In the fall of 2016, Webb launched a new preschool program. The Junior Spartan Pre-K program is designed for children aged four to five. The program is run by two teachers who are also supported by certified art, Spanish and technology teachers. ^[6]

Construction

In early 2007, Respect Tradition, Realize the Vision launched a campaign to renovate and expand the campus. Phase I included the construction of the new Jim and Kay Clayton Science Center, which was completed in October 2007. The Coleman-Lange International Center for the Study of World Languages and Cultures, a building dedicated to the study of international cultures, was completed in 2008 when the same as the Founder’s Society. ^[2]

Since the end of 2019, new construction projects have begun on campus. The construction of a new innovation center has begun at the secondary school, which should be completed in the fall of 2020. Also starting in the fall of 2019 in a high school learning center designed for the same purposes as the innovation center, but with additional features such as a cafe and possibly virtual reality. The latest project to begin this fall will be the new Central Building, which was to be the new entrance to the Webb campus. ^[7]

Athletics

Webb Fields Multi-Sport Teams Competing in Division II (Private Schools) Tennessee High School Athletic Association. Webb has athletic facilities including a soccer stadium, softball, baseball, soccer, lacrosse/field hockey fields, wrestling hall, basketball and volleyball courts, outdoor courts. swimming pool, outdoor track, outdoor and indoor tennis courts and several more training grounds.

The football team finished second in 1997 and 2005. ^[8] ^[9] & State Champions 1981, ^[9] 1996, ^[9] 2006, ^[9] 2009, 2010 & 2012 ^[9] ^[10] The Junior Ski Team was state champion in 1990 and 2009. ^[11] This achievement led Webb to the 1990 Pepsi Cup State Championship. ^[11] Most recently, cross country boys won state championships in 2002. ^[12] 2003, 2009, 2010 and 2012 ^[13] Girls cross-country teams also won state titles in 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2012. ^[14] The Boys’ Lacrosse Team was the 2009 East Tennessee Division II Regional Champions and ranked #1 in LaxPower.com’s Division II Tennessee rankings. The women’s basketball team won the state championship in 2007 and 2009. ^[15]

Sports include: Baseball, Basketball, Bowling, Cheerleading, Climbing, Off Road, Diving, Field Hockey, Football, Golf, Lacrosse, Sailing, Football, Softball, Swimming, Tennis, Athletics, Volleyball , and Fight.

High School Football

The Spartans have a bitter rivalry with Knoxville Catholic High School that dates back to the 1970s. ^{[ citation needed ]}

The Spartans’ first state football title (TSSAA Class A) was achieved in the fall of 1981, when the team fielded fewer than 20 players in one game, and most of the starters played offense and defense. They went 7-3 in the regular season (losing to only one Grade A team) before beating Sweetwater, Caulfield and Meigs County in the playoffs. Webb won the championship 4 December 1981 years old. It was played at Bearden High School in Knoxville and Webb defeated Memphis Prep.

Webb defeated Goodpasture, 27-20, for the TSSAA Class AA State Championship.

The Spartans currently play in the TSSAA Division II-A. In 2005, the Webb Spartans became TSSAA Division II-AA finalists, losing 0-26 to Evangelical Christian School. The following year, Webb returned to the state championship and played ECS again, winning 17-14. The victory was the Spartans’ third state football title, placing them 11th in Tennessee in state football championships. ^[16] Webb’s last record for the 2007 season is 9-3. The following season, the Spartans were promoted to Division II-AA and made the playoffs, but lost in the first round. Montgomery Bell Academy.

In 2009 Webb returned to Division II-Small. The Spartans went 12-1 en route to their fourth state championship. In 2010, Webb again became the state champion, defeating St. George’s 42-7 to end the season 13-0. Webb brought home his sixth state championship in 2012 when the Spartans defeated ECS 47-14.

The Secret Garden of Reading

Of course, you know that many of the writers of the past, whose books are now included in the lists of classic children’s reading, did not write them for children at all.

But, since their books turned out to be both fascinating and instructive, the style was clear and accessible, why shouldn’t such books be loved first of all by inquisitive and hungry for adventure, secrets and mysteries of young readers? Moreover, the heroes of these books are their peers?

So with the books of the Anglo-American writer Francis Eliza Hodgson Burnett a similar story happened – Burnett’s novels and stories are included in the golden library of world children’s literature, although they touch on very different (and very difficult topics), and are addressed to adults not in less so than children.

Frances Eliza Hodgson was born 170 years ago, on November 24, 1849 in Manchester into a wealthy bourgeois family. When her young mother was widowed with five children (Frances had two older brothers and two younger sisters), the family’s income plummeted.

The Hodgsonsons moved frequently, and little Francis lived for long periods with her grandmother, who taught her granddaughter to read and love books. Very early, Frances, a student of a small private school, showed literary abilities – she wrote stories and poems, was a good storyteller. The girl’s education ended at the age of fifteen – the family moved to America, and she had to leave her studies at the Seminary for Young Ladies and Gentlemen, where the gifted Francis had proven herself so well.

In America, in the town of Knoxville (Tennessee), there lived a mother’s brother, on whose help she counted. The Hodsonsons left England in 1863, fleeing ruin, but the family had a hard time in Tennessee – the defeated South lay in ruins, and in order to survive, they had to take on any work.

Here the girl’s literary gift came in handy – she began to write for magazines, and to pay postage for mailing manuscripts, she worked as a grape picker. Francis published her first stories under pseudonyms.

In 1867 Mrs. Hodgson died, and eighteen-year-old Frances became the head of the family. Her first forays into literature were noticed, and her stories began to appear in reputable literary magazines. One of these magazines belonged to the Scribners publishing company, with which the writer collaborated until the end of her days – it was here that many of her famous novels and short stories were published. In the 80s of the nineteenth century, Burnett was already a well-known writer; it is printed on both sides of the ocean, it lives now in England, now in America, it is recognized among famous contemporaries-writers. Her personal life was not happy, she was twice married and divorced, she lost her closest people.

In our country, Burnett is known mainly as the author of children’s books, among which anyone, without hesitation, will name the best-selling novel “Little Lord Fauntleroy” , which went through 20 editions only during the life of the writer. But the “children’s” part of her work is relatively small, she addressed much more books to adult readers, of which, unfortunately, not all of them have been translated into Russian.

One of Burnett’s most famous and beloved books, The Secret Garden was originally published for adults – before being published as a children’s book, this novel appeared in American Magazine at 1910 year. In this story, there are many personal experiences and circumstances of the life of the writer herself.

In 1898, Burnett settled at Great Mathem Hall, an estate in Kent. There was a vegetable garden on the estate, but the ivy was so densely wrapped around its walls that Burnett could not find the door. A robin showed her the entrance – and Burnett took up the abandoned site, turning it into a flowering garden. Biographers of the writer believe that the prototype of one of the heroes of the “Secret Garden” – Colin – was the son of the writer, Lionel, who died of tuberculosis at a young age.

“When Mary Lennox first showed up at Misselthwaite Manor, her uncle’s Yorkshire estate, she looked nasty and didn’t behave very well. Imagine a haughty ten-year-old girl with a thin, angry face and a frail body, add to this the sickly yellowness of the skin, and you can easily understand why no one in Misselthwaite was pleased with her presence.

This is how one of Frances Burnett’s most famous books begins The Secret Garden . We are sure that if you have ever read this story, you will want to reread it together with your grown-up daughter or son – the story of the orphan child Mary Lennox and those who are destined to become her new family is told so sincerely and talentedly, subtly and restrainedly.

The Secret Garden was first published over a hundred years ago and remains one of the most loved books by teenagers worldwide. Among several Russian publications of recent years, we would single out edition of the story in the Golden Collection of World Literature series , the main advantage of which are the wonderful illustrations by the world-famous Australian artist Robert Ingpen, who read this book for the first time in adulthood, and created illustrations for it for the centenary of the story.

These illustrations are special – they just emphasize the well-known “non-childishness” of Burnett’s story: not at all sentimental, but very realistic images of characters, endings and intros to chapters – a kind of encyclopedia of the island flora (the artist used of the Cliffords family in Gloucestershire, the Flora of Frampton Court collection), endpapers are decorated with graphic images of ancient gardening tools. A connoisseur of the art of the book will definitely want to have such a book in his collection, no matter what age he is.

Fans of the art of book illustration will also appreciate this magnificent publication: Robert Ingpen’s Wonderland , which contains dozens of different reproductions of the artist’s most famous works and demonstrates the process of creating an illustration – from sketch to completion, as well as notes, observations and comments of the master.

The story “The Secret Garden” is often published in Russia today, it has always attracted artists working in different manners and techniques.

On the shelves of the main bookstore there is also The Secret Garden, which reproduces illustrations by the famous English graphic artist Charles Robinson from the original British edition of the beginning of the century, which was intended for adult readers. The binding of the edition is decorated with an embossed floral ornament in Art Nouveau style.

The series of illustrations of the “Secret Garden” by the English artist Inga Moore is also very famous. She was fascinated by Charles Robinson’s illustrations as a child, but there were so few of them – only nine! Becoming an artist, Inga painted more than a hundred – you can look at them for hours.

Inga Moore uses pencils, inks, watercolors, pastels and oils to create her works. With the help of a variety of textures, she achieves an unusually authentic and fine detail, which is rarely found in the work of modern illustrators.
