Sugar Loaf Mountain in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil)

Sugar Loaf Mountain (Pão de Açúcar) is the second most important place to visit in Rio after the statue of Christ the Redeemer. This is written in all guidebooks, but for me it is the first. I’m ready to climb here at least every day! For the photographer, the most beautiful views of Rio de Janeiro open up here.

Getting there

Buses 107 and 513 go here, stopping at Urca. The nearest metro station is Botafogo. There is a car park nearby. The cost is 0.50 euros (2 reales) for two hours. You can also take a taxi or use the Uber app.

Then you need to walk two hundred meters in the direction of travel, and on the right you will see the box office where you can buy a ticket for the cable car for 21 euros (76 reais) round trip. In my opinion, it’s too expensive. But there is a way out of this situation. You can walk up to the top of Mount Urca and then for 11 euros (40 reais) or 5.5 euros (20 reais) if you have benefits: you are under 20 years old or you are over 60, to the Sugar Loaf (Pão de Açúcar) .
So, we leave the ticket office and go towards the Sugar Loaf (Pão de Açúcar). On the left we pass the white building and exit to the gate with security. This is the entrance to the trail. Here you can see people jogging. The first ten minutes of walking is very easy, you can hear the sound of the surf at the Red Beach (Praia Vermelha), where you can swim after the descent, so do not forget to bring your swimsuit. Then, after admiring the monkeys, which cannot be fed, our road goes up to the left through the forest. The walk is about 25 minutes. It will be difficult for people who do not like sports to climb, although the second time my friend, who is over 60 years old, climbed with me. You can stop at viewing platforms. The path is divided into 5 stops.

As a photographer, I specifically planned a hike to catch the sunset. We started our journey at 15:00 and found the most romantic views of Rio.

Then we climbed for 11 euros to the top of the Sugar Loaf (Pão de Açúcar). This journey lasts 2 minutes and 40 seconds. You will be brought back only to Mount Urca (Urca), if it is already late and the trekking back is closed, then you will need to pay 5. 5 euros (20 reais) to get to the foot. For those who are afraid of heights, advice: do not eat anything before the trip.

Climbing up the equipped path, I could not imagine how the first photographer Mark Ferrer made the same way, photographing the panorama of Rio from the Sugarloaf in 1890. Rising, he carried about 100 kg of equipment, chemicals and a tent for a darkroom. At that time, the view from the Sugar Loaf was the only one not captured on film.

History

Since the 16th century Sugarloaf has fascinated travelers with its impenetrable walls surrounded by the emerald waters of Guanabara Bay. But the privilege of admiring the view from above was not available until the brave English lady Henrietta Carstairs conquered 396-meter almost vertical wall.

The people of Rio de Janeiro only gained public access to Sugar Loaf in 1913, when a cable car was built that connected Praia Vermelha (Red Beach), Mount Urca (first level) and Sugar Loaf. This happened thanks to the idea that came to the Brazilian engineer Augusto Ferreira Ramos during the 1908 exhibition, which was held in Urca. In addition to turning the Sugar Loaf into the world’s greatest tourist attraction, this idea opened up a stunning panorama of Rio de Janeiro to hundreds of thousands of visitors.

Augusto Ferreira Ramos was a famous engineer with great experience and a dream to build a cable car to Sugarloaf Mountain. On June 14, 1911, he registered a company and began looking for investors to create this amazing project aimed at developing the social influence of Rio de Janeiro, which at that time was the capital of Brazil. One dream led to the construction of the first cable car in Latin America and the third in the world after Switzerland and Spain.

The first part of the aerial tram stretched for 528 meters between Praia Vermelha (in the past one could see the reddish sand in the depths of the ocean) and Mount Urca, which was opened in 1912 year. The second part, Mount Urka – Sugar Loaf, opened a year later, on January 18, 1913. This cable car was soon nicknamed “bondinho” (bondinho – tram), due to its similarity with the street trams of the time, which were called “bondes”. In 2013, the Sugarloaf cable car celebrated its centenary.

The history of Rio and Sugar Loaf are closely related. The name “Sugarloaf” comes from the 16th century, when Brazil was at the peak of the sugar cane trade with Europe. Blocks of sugar were collected into canonical forms made from clay for transportation to the ship. In shape, these blocks were similar to the top of a mountain, hence the name.
The second version says that the name comes from the phrase “paunh-acuqua”, which in the language of the Tupi tribe translates as “high hill” or “guardian of the bay.”

Climbing

Sugarloaf, Urca and Babylon Rock are the largest and most popular climbing area in Brazil. There are about 300 climbing routes of varying difficulty, surrounded by breathtaking views of Guanabara Bay.

When I was climbing the mountain for the second time, I met climbers who told me that the Sugarloaf was first conquered three hundred years after it was discovered by the Portuguese by a brave English lady named Henrietta Carstairs in 1817. After a difficult climb for several hours, the thirty-nine-year-old rock climber planted the English flag on the top of the mountain. Brazilians reacted differently to the news. One of the patriots, a soldier named José Maria Gonçalves, took this feat as a personal affront and undertook a six-hour climb the next day to replace the British flag with the Brazilian one.

My friend told me that there are several trails for both beginners and professionals.

Costão is the easiest route. Even without experience, you can hire a coach and get up and down in just four hours. To find a specialist, you need not turn left at the sign for Mount Urca, but go straight along the paved road.

Cost and schedule

Opening hours: from 8:00 to 21:00. Ticket offices are open until 19:50. The gates to the Urca mountain trekking close at 18:00.

Price: 21 euros. Half price discount for students (upon presentation of a document) and people over 60 years old. Children under 6 years old – free of charge, from 6 to 12 – half price.

Sugar loaf – original sugar product – TeaTerra

Leafing through old magazines, sometimes you come across amazing illustrations. Today, not every one of our contemporaries will say what “sugar loaf” is . And here, please, here it is – in all its glory.

For the first time industrial sugar appeared in the form of a “head”. Historians claim that the production of sugar in the form of conical heads was already carried out in Venice at the end of the 10th century.

“Sugar loaves” were prepared as follows: cane sugar, purified from impurities by refining, turned into a thick syrup (mass mass). This syrup was poured hot (98-99°C) into special cone-shaped molds with a small hole in the bottom to remove excess liquid. The molds were then left for several weeks to dry and crystallize.

On the engraving, these same sugar loaves. One is a giant, created for advertising purposes, and around it are ordinary ones, for shops and stores. This composition was placed at the Manufactory Exhibition of 1870 in St. Petersburg.

Production of sugar heads

A snow-white ingot was obtained, shaped like an artillery shell. This ingot was called the sugar loaf. The sugar loaf had the shape of a cylinder. One end of the cylinder was flat, and a sugar loaf could be placed on this end. The other end of the cylinder had a pointed shape. The sugar loaf, removed from the mold, was wrapped in a special thick blue paper, which was called sugar paper.

The Persians used bamboo sticks to dry sugar. The Egyptians are glass molds, while the Chinese are ceramic. For many years, Europeans took wooden structures as assistants, and later switched to clay ones. However, all these materials are quite fragile. Therefore, already at the very beginning of the industrialization of sugar production, they were replaced by zinc and steel. Each form had a lock. With its help, the form was easily opened, and the sugar head, after hardening, was easily removed.

Sugar loaves were made in different sizes and weighed from 5 to 15 kilograms. Of course, this volume was much more than what ordinary consumers demanded. Yes, and the price “bite”. Sellers had to break the sugar into small pieces. The hardest thing was with 15-kg giants. Soon, however, sugar heads began to be cut into pieces in an industrial way. This made it easier for both buyers and sellers.

Crushing with a centrifuge came into use around 1900. This method allowed the massecuite to dry even faster. Drying took place not in the room, but in a centrifuge. At the end, the sugar was taken out of the molds and packaged.

Sugarloaf production ceased in Denmark and Sweden around 1940. At about the same time, fine loose sugar familiar to us appeared. Merchants continued to sell sugar by weight until 1955. And then 2-kg packages appeared in stores.

Today, sugar loaves are mainly distributed in the Arab countries, they are still produced in Belgium. They can be stored for an arbitrarily long time – truly eternal sugar. The base of the “head” (lower two-thirds) is traditionally wrapped in blue paper, always of the same color and density – blue-gray was once even called the color of sugar paper. Sugar loaf 20 cm high was last on sale in our country at 1967 to the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution.

Some places still sell sugar loaves. Only they weigh a maximum of 250 g, and they are imported from Germany.

In the store, large heads were cut or sawn into smaller pieces and sold by weight. Such sugar was called chopped and sawn. Smaller sugar loaves were sold whole, and already at home, they were cut with a special cleaver, smaller pieces were split, and then they “bite off” the pieces with such sugar tongs.

After that, a large lump of sugar was placed on the palm and beaten with the butt of a knife.

For cracking sugar heads, a huge number of devices were invented and used: from tongs and hatchets to special guillatins. Many examples of which are now kept in various sugar museums around the world.

The form of “sugar loaves” in the Middle Ages was used in the manufacture of a transitional form of knightly helmets, which were called just like sugar loaves. And in Crimea, Sugar Loaf Rock is a small coral reef on the outskirts of Sudak. Resembling a frozen lump of sugar, the mountain was chosen by climbers and filmmakers. It was here that scenes from the movie “The Master and Margarita” were filmed. So the use of “sugar heads” in the everyday life of many peoples of the world has moved to other areas of people’s lives.

The use of crushed lump sugar has become a part of the tea-drinking tradition of many peoples of the world. So the inhabitants of the Frisian islands, according to tradition, put a piece of crushed sugar at the bottom of the cup, pour tea, and add a spoonful of cream on top. In Russia, lump sugar is consumed with a cup of tea … But that’s a completely different story.

Sugar head. It has a very unusual pointed shape, 400 meters high, towering over Guanabara Bay, in the eastern part of Rio de Janeiro. At the foot of the mountain, the history of the modern city begins, in 1565 a Portuguese settlement was founded here, which later turned into modern Rio.
