A child care center has been approved to come to Richardson near Arapaho Road and Hampshire Lane.
The Children are Heroes Learning Center will be located at 1006 Hampshire Lane in what was previously Richardson Learning Center and DayCare. After acquiring the property last September, owner Valerie McGhee said she plans to open the business by the end of April.
“We will create jobs in the community as well as provide services to allow parents to return back into the workforce,” McGhee said. “While times are changing, one thing remains the same, and that is quality for our children. We plan on providing child care from a parent’s perspective and to provide a new environment for each child to thrive.”
A special permit to approve the center was approved 6-0 by City Council during its Feb. 28 meeting. As part of the permit application, McGhee said she plans to construct the outside pavement space into a 2,300-square-foot concrete playground. The center will also include a 800-square-foot grass playground and white fencing around the playground to match the Velvet Snout Dog Daycare next door.
According to the details of the special permit, the center will be limited to a maximum enrollment of 80 kids. Additionally, an agreement has been reached with neighbor Crossbar Soccer + Beer, located at 1000 Hampshire Lane, to share parking and a dumpster. This agreement must be executed prior to the issuance of a certificate of occupancy.
One area for concern cited by the board was parking in the establishment, as the site would only have eight parking spots designated for parent drop-off. McGhee said the center plans to use a contactless drop-off system with staff, which should make parking easier and reduce the potential spread of disease. Parking will also be supplanted by the agreement with Crossbar.
After gaining the special permit, McGhee said she will now acquire a building permit for the property from the city.

What makes kindergartens different
Immediately after the birth of the baby, young parents think about kindergartens. The choice of a preschool institution should depend not only on the territorial location, but also on specialization. However, many parents do not understand the difference between kindergartens and enroll their child in the first one that comes across. In fact, the differences can be quite significant and it is better to familiarize yourself with them in advance.
Depending on their specifics and functions, all kindergartens are divided into:
- Kindergarten;
- combined type kindergarten;
- compensatory type kindergarten;
- kindergarten of a general developmental type;
- kindergarten supervision and rehabilitation;
- a kindergarten with an ethno-cultural (national) component of education;
- preschool groups of state educational institutions “elementary school – kindergarten”;
- child development center – kindergarten.
The most common variety of preschool institutions is an ordinary kindergarten, which provides care and supervision for pupils, as well as education and rehabilitation. Such kindergartens differ in the applied educational programs.
A combined type kindergarten includes several different groups: general developmental, compensatory, health-improving, as well as groups that combine several functions. That is, within the same institution, parents can choose the direction of the group in which the child will be assigned. A kindergarten of a general developmental type, as a rule, has a priority direction for the development of pupils – physical, intellectual, artistic and aesthetic. Thus, parents have the opportunity to enroll an active kid in an institution with a sports bias, and a creative one with an artistic one.
A compensatory type kindergarten (with priority implementation of qualified correction) is engaged in educating children with various pathologies. For example, there are institutions for children with mental retardation, tuberculosis intoxication, musculoskeletal disorders, hearing impairments, speech disorders, visual impairments, intellectual disabilities, children who are often ill, etc. Highly qualified doctors work in such kindergartens. Special conditions are created for pupils: diet food, swimming pools, saunas, massage rooms, mini-groups. In kindergartens of a compensatory type, they adhere to special educational programs that contribute to the treatment and development of children. In addition, in such institutions there are counseling centers where parents can get advice or professional advice on how to act in a particular case. To get into a compensatory kindergarten, you need to get the appropriate referral from a pediatrician and certificates from specialists in the kindergarten profile.
The Kindergarten for Care and Rehabilitation operates with an emphasis on sanitary and hygienic, preventive and health-improving measures and procedures. Such institutions are recommended for children with poor health. There may be no training sessions at all.
Kindergartens with an ethno-cultural (national) component of education are created in order to achieve tolerance and mutual respect of cultures. Children are taught to carefully preserve universal spiritual achievements, master cultural traditions, reveal the creative origins of folk culture, reject national exclusivity, treat each other with dignity and respect. It is not difficult to guess that such institutions are multinational and this is their key difference.
Pre-school groups of state educational institutions “elementary school – kindergarten” do not provide supervision and care for children. As a rule, such institutions are visited by children from the age of 6 to prepare for school. Classes are held regularly and are considered optional.
The child development center – kindergarten consists of a game and sports and recreation complexes, an art studio, a computer class, a children’s theater, a swimming pool, etc. In such institutions, an integrated approach is used to organize work with children – physical and mental development and correction are carried out. The emphasis is on the intellectual and artistic and aesthetic development of children. In most cases, child development centers are private. There is a fee to visit these establishments.
Pins:
- Ordinary kindergartens differ in the applied educational programs.
- The kindergarten of the combined type includes several different groups of different specifics.
- A kindergarten of a general developmental type has a priority direction for the development of pupils.
- A compensatory type kindergarten is engaged in raising children with various pathologies. Such institutions are distinguished by the conditions in which children are kept, the use of special programs, and the availability of medical personnel.
- Kindergarten care and rehabilitation is characterized by the absence of training sessions.
- Kindergartens with an ethno-cultural component of education differ in the content of programs and the general atmosphere.
- Pre-school groups of state educational institutions “elementary school – kindergarten” do not provide supervision and care for children.
- Child Development Center – kindergarten is distinguished by an integrated approach and paid attendance.
