Bayonne (Bayonne), France – a complete city guide, photo

Bayonne (Bayonne) is the cultural capital of the northern part of the Basque Country, located in the very south-west of France, in Aquitaine. When it’s not hosting the biggest summer festival in France, Bayonne is a pretty laid back town full of slender Bacs houses, each adorned with wooden beams and shutters. The most picturesque part of Bayonne is located near the river Nive, where the view of the city is reminiscent of Amsterdam in the Basque style. Bayonne is also famous for its chocolate and the popular Bayonne ham . And just a few kilometers from Bayonne is one of the most famous seaside resorts in France – Biarritz.

Located in the very north of the French Basque Country, at the confluence of the rivers Nive and Adour, Bayonne is called “Baiona” in the Bakian language. Although the city itself is not very large, it is part of the BAB agglomeration, consisting of Bayonne itself, the nearby suburb of Anglet and the beach resort of Biarritz (8 km from Bayonne). The entire population of the WAB is almost 200,000 people. But in general, the atmosphere in Bayonne is rather not a city, but a small town.

Bayonne has long prospered thanks to maritime trade and its strategic location near the border with Spain. For a long time the city belonged to England, but finally passed under the French crown in 1451, when Aquitaine was transferred to France. In the 16th century, Bayonne opened its gates to many Jewish refugees who fled from the persecution of the Spanish and Portuguese Inquisition.

The city is also famous for its August festival (Fêtes de Bayonne – the largest summer festival in France) and the oldest bullfight in France. In late May – early June, the city hosts the Chocolate Festival (“Les Journées du Chocolat”).

Weather in Bayonne:

Getting to Bayonne:

There is Biarritz Airport nearby, connected to Bayonne by bus. From other cities in France, you can get to Bayonne either by train (usually more expensive, but faster) or by bus (there are very inexpensive tickets). There are several regional bus routes from Bayonne to neighboring towns such as Biarritz and Espelette.

  • More details on how to get to Bayonne

By plane : Biarritz airport is located 7 km from Bayonne. Two buses run from the airport to Bayonne – to the station and to the city center, the ticket costs 1 €, the journey takes about 30 minutes.

By train : has its own station with direct flights from Bordeaux, Paris. From Toulouse can only be reached with a change in Bordeaux.

By bus : there are direct buses from Charles de Gaulle airport and Paris (night bus Ouibus, Flixbus), Bordeaux and Toulouse (buses Ouibus, Flixbus, Eurolines) as well as regional buses to Biarritz, Espelette, etc. A ticket for regional buses costs 2€, for Ouibus and Flixbus buses it can change a lot.

More information on how to get to Bayonne: timetables, ticket prices, bus and train routes to Bayonne… of which are beautiful and relaxing in their own way. The buildings in Bayonne are finished in a beautiful mixture of French and Baque styles and decorated with colorful wooden shutters. Numerous restaurants and bars line the embankment on both sides of the Nive River, where you can relax, have a bite to eat and enjoy the most beautiful views of the city.

Thanks to the river Adour, which connects Bayonne with the Bay of Biscay, the city was successfully involved in trade. Bayonne grew and prospered with the help of whaling and cod fishing, as well as Basque sailors who returned with spices and wealth from distant lands. This influx of money helped finance the construction of many of the city’s buildings, including the massive Gothic cathedral.

Due to the commercial importance of Bayonne and its close proximity to Spain (about 30 km), the city has many fortified structures. Much of the original fortified wall that surrounded the city has disappeared, but some parts of it can still be seen walking the streets. Among other defensive structures of the city, you can see the Porte d’Espagne (Spanish Gate), Chateau-Neuf (New Castle), Château-Vieux (Old Castle) and the citadel. Unfortunately, most of the fortifications are closed to the public, but they can be viewed from the outside.

View Bayonne:

The best way to see Bayonne is to start from the south bank of the river Adour and then follow the river Nive. Traditional half-timbered Bak houses lined up along the shore. Their typical red or green shutters give them their unique character.

The route along Bayonne can be divided into two parts: a walk through the historic center ( Grand Bayonne ) around the cathedral and the route along Petit Bayonne where the museums and the “New Castle” are located. They are located on opposite banks of the river.

Tourist route to the Bayonna city center:

Card of the Bayonn city center:

Bayonna attractions along the route:

  1. Grand Bayonne

Bayonne Historic Center

Grand Bayonne is not only the commercial center of the city, but also the oldest part of it.

Until the 17th century, the old town, which was grouped around the cathedral, was crossed by canals. Some streets, such as rue Port-Neuf, were created on the site of filled canals.

Rue Argenterie is named after the goldsmiths and silversmiths whose workshops were located here. And rue de la Salie was in the quarter of tailors and spice merchants.

Sainte-Marie Cathedral

The spire of the cathedral rises above Bayonne. The construction of this Gothic temple began in 1213 and lasted until the 17th century. The only exception is the north tower – it was built in 19century.

Alongside the cathedral is a cloister dating back to 1240, made in the flamboyant gothic style. This is one of the largest cloisters in all of France.

Opening hours: Mon – Sat 10 – 11:45 / 15 – 17:45, Sun 15:30 – 18:00.

Scheme and attractions of Bayonne Cathedral:

Château-Vieux

Not far from the Cathedral of Bayonne is the “Old Castle” (Château-Vieux). Built in the 12th century by Viscount Labord, the castle was originally the official seat of the city’s government (including Edward, the “Black Prince”). French kings Francis I and Louis XIV also stayed here. Currently, the castle is owned by the military and therefore closed to the public, but you can walk around the courtyard.

Bayonne City Hall

Bayonne City Hall (Hôtel de Ville) is located at the intersection of two rivers. By the way, both buses from Biarritz airport stop by her. The city hall building was built in 1843 in neoclassical style. Initially, there was a customs office. The six statues on the roof symbolize the city’s economic and artistic activities. Currently, in addition to the city hall, there is a theater and a cafe with a pleasant terrace on the square in front of the building.

River embankment Nive

Starting from place de la Liberté, the river Nive runs along the covered market and open-air market places. The Quai Jauréguiberry, with its typical Bayonne houses, and the rue de Poissonnerie a little further on, were very busy at a time when Bayonne served as a port for goods brought in from the New World.

Bayonne covered market

Les Halles, an indoor market, is located on the banks of the river Nive. This is a great place to try local specialties. There are meat and fish shops, as well as two bakeries where you can taste the traditional “Basque Pie” (gâteau Basque). The market and the area around it is especially lively on Saturday mornings, when an open-air market with local products and clothes is organized around.

Opening hours of the covered market:

  • Mon – Fri 7:00 – 13:30
  • Sat 6:00-13:30
  • Sun 8:00 – 13:30
Botanical Garden

Jardin Botanique – the botanical garden of Bayonne – covers an area of about 3,000 square meters, and is located on Avenue du 11 Novembre, next to the tourist office. The garden was opened in the late 90s. It is located at the top of the bastion between the cathedral and the fortifications.

2. Petit Bayonne

In addition to walking along the picturesque streets of “Little Bayonne”, you can visit the Basque Museum:

Basque Museum

Basque Museum (full name – Museum of the History of Bucks and the History of Bayonne – musée Basque et de l’histoire de Bayonne) is located in the Maison Dagourette building – a beautifully restored 16th century mansion, listed as a historical monument of France. The museum’s collection, which has been continuously growing since 1922, is dedicated to Bak culture. Located in 20 rooms, the exhibition will show you the folk art and traditions of the Basque Country. It features several themes, including farm life and river trade, as well as theatre, music, dance, games and sports. There is also a section on daily wear and traditional costumes, architecture, religious and secular festivals and funeral traditions. The paintings depict typical local scenes and activities.

  • Musée Basque
  • Maison Dagourette, 37 quai des Corsaires.
  • Opening hours:
    • April – September: Tue – Sun 10:00 – 18:30, closed on Mondays and holidays

  • Museum tours: for individual visitors (Tues & Thus subject to availability, plus 1st Sun of each month).
  • Entry: €7.5, concession €5
  • Free entry: under 26 and first Sunday of each month
Place Paul-Bert

In August, during the Bayonne Festival, bulls are released in this Petit Bayonne square as part of a traditional bullfight. Nearby is the 19th-century Saint-André Church (Église Saint-André), where services are held in the Baque language. Directly opposite the church is the New Castle:

Château-Neuf

The New Castle (Château-Neuf) was built in the 15th century during the reign of Charles VII. It was part of the fortifications that were later built around the city. During the summer, the castle turns into a large temporary exhibition center of the Basque Museum. Now the massive building of the New Castle belongs to the University and, unfortunately, is closed to the public.

Musée Bonnat-Helleu

Bayonne Art Museum. The museum’s collection of paintings includes paintings by Rubens, El Greco, Degas, Titian, Raphael, Dalekroix and Goya.

The Bonnat-Helleu Museum is located at the intersection of rue Jacques Laffitte and Frédéric Bastiat in the center of Bayonne. The building is located near the town hall, the railway station and the Basque Museum.

The museum is temporarily closed for restoration, due to open at the end of 2019.

  • 5 rue Jacques Laffitte
    64100 Bayonne
  • Nearest car park: Allées Boufflers
  • Public transport: The Bonn-Helleu Museum is located next to the place du Réduit, served by lines A1, A2, C, 11, 13 and 14 of the Chronoplus network. Free shuttle bus between Parking La Floride and downtown Bayon, Monday to Saturday from 7:30 am to 7:30 pm, departing from every 15 minutes.
Croix de Mouguerre

The Croix de Mouguerre, 8.5 km from Bayonne, commemorates those killed in the battle that took place in 1813, during the Napoleonic Wars, between the British led by Wellington and the French led by Marichal Soult.

From here you can enjoy stunning views of the Pyrenees, Bayonne, the Adour River and the Atlantic Ocean.

Place de la Liberté

In this square, the keys to the city are thrown into the crowd, marking the beginning of the August festival.

Theater of Bayonne

Located on the river Nive, where it merges with the River Adour, this theater was built in 1842. The building also houses the city hall, from the balcony of which the start of Bayonne festivals is announced.

Church Saint-André

Built in the 19th century, this church contains an important painting of the Assumption by Léon Bonne and an 1863 organ donated by Napoleon III.

River Nive

This is a popular promenade, especially during the summer when buskers and dancers fill it up during the festival season. Along the promenade lined with bars and restaurants with terraces. And once before, fish and goods from the Americas were unloaded here.

3. Saint-Esprit

From Petit Bayonne you can cross the river Adour on the Pont Saint-Esprit bridge and you will find yourself in the Saint-Esprit quarter, where the citadel and Bayonne train station are located. Initially, this territory was part of Gascony and therefore differed from the rest of Bayonne. It was populated predominantly by immigrants, in particular Jews who fled the Inquisition of Spain and Portugal and left the country en masse starting in the middle of the 16th century. The Jews contributed greatly to the growth and prosperity of Bayonne by organizing maritime trade. They also greatly contributed to the emergence of chocolate in France: first it was brought to Bayonne, and from here on it spread throughout the country. And today you can find many chocolate shops here. A synagogue and a Jewish cemetery have survived from that period.

The area is still mostly working class and has retained a cosmopolitan atmosphere.

Basic information

border between France and Switzerland. From the French side, this region includes 8 resorts: Avoriaz, Morzigne, Les Gets, Abondance, La Chapelle-d’Abondane, Châtel, Montrion and Saint-Jean. Porte du Soleil is famous not only for its beautiful landscapes, well-developed infrastructure, but also for a huge selection of slopes that can satisfy both skiers and snowboarders of absolutely any level.

Due to the rather low location of the ski areas, the best time to visit
in Portes du Soleil is the period from the second half of January to the end of February.

This international ski resort, with an area of 400 square kilometers, is considered the most extensive ski area in Europe. It was founded in 1960, when it was given the name Porte du Soleil, which means “Gate of the Sun”. The idea of free movement was the basis for the creation of the region. “Every skier has the right to go and see what lies beyond the horizon,” reads the first playful article of the Social Treaty adopted at the Portes du Soleil. Today, on the slopes of the resort, vacationers can cross the border between France and Switzerland hundreds of times without even noticing it.

The main advantage of the resorts of Portes du Soleil is the abundance of unprepared slopes. Surprisingly, on a large-scale ski complex there is no feeling of crowds and fuss. There are many deserted, picturesque corners where you can stay alone with nature.

How to get there

By plane

The nearest airports are Geneva (80 km), Annecy (96 km) and Lyon (200 km).

Hotels and cottages

Portes du Soleil offers a variety of hotels, apartments and chalets from relatively inexpensive options to luxury class for a comfortable stay for all guests of the resort. Resorts are very popular, so the best deals are booked in early autumn.

By the way. Many hotels have Russian names: Chapka, Douchka, Malinka, Datcha, Sosna, Taiga.

Portes du Soleil has a simple and cozy atmosphere of an alpine village – small family-friendly villages offer accommodation in small hotels built of wood and stone in a chalet style. Against the backdrop of traditional Savoyard settlements, the resort of Avoriaz is especially distinguished, since it was built in the late 60s. Multi-storey buildings of modern hotels, standing on the very edge of a sheer cliff, create a fantastic picture and miraculously fit into the mountain landscape. The town is quite large, but you can start riding from anywhere.

Unlike Avoriaz, which was built on purpose, Morzine and Les Gets have the image of old-style resorts with cozy wooden chalets. Over the past two years, the region has grown significantly and increased its popularity. Morzine has a large selection of apartments and hotels – mostly two and three star categories. Almost all of them are located on the slopes, which is very convenient.

Three-star hotels La Bergere, Le Petit Dru and Le Philibert are among the most popular hotels in the region.
