Poor, age-inappropriate vocabulary

Some of the parents whose children are already in school have received complaints from teachers that their children have a rather poor vocabulary that is not appropriate for their age.

A child’s vocabulary is mainly formed in the family and is finally formed by the age of 6-7. If this does not happen, parents will have to deal with replenishing the vocabulary and developing the thinking of their baby along with specialists.

The development of a student’s vocabulary depends on many factors.

The level of development of thinking that a child has reached determines the possibilities of assimilating words. Words of generalizing meaning become accessible to understanding only after the formation of the mental operation of generalization.

The vocabulary develops in the course of acquaintance with the surrounding world, its objects, phenomena, and depends on the socio-cultural level of people raising a child.

As speech and thinking develop, the gradually replenished vocabulary is ordered, systematized, forming semantic fields or word formations by meaning.

The following directions of dictionary development have been identified:

  • Expansion of the vocabulary

Similar words game

Purpose: to expand the vocabulary of synonyms, develop the ability to identify words that are similar in meaning.

We call the child a series of words and ask them to determine which two of them are similar in meaning and why. We explain to the child that similar words are friend words. And they are called so because they are similar in meaning.

Game “Finish the sentence”

Purpose: formation of semantic fields, expansion of the dictionary of antonyms. An adult pronounces an unfinished sentence, the student selects the right word, choosing from words with the opposite meaning.

  • Batteries are needed in the house to make it (cold, warm, hot)
  • At the holiday they try to make the guests feel (bitter, sad, fun)
  • The morning is over, it starts (night, day, evening)
  • Lemon was sprinkled with sugar to make it (bitter, sour, sweet)
  • Knives are sharpened to become (dull, crooked, sharp)
  • A tree is watered to grow and become (high, low, straight)
  • The water in the kettle is boiled to make it (hot, warm, cold)

Game “Two friends”

Purpose: development of a dictionary of synonyms.

Think of words-friends to these words:

tiny – (small), brave – (brave), beautiful – (beautiful).

Say the opposite game

Purpose: to expand the dictionary of antonyms.

For this game we need a ball.
Throw the ball to the child and say the word. The child, returning the ball, calls the word opposite in meaning.
Now you and I will turn into stubborn people who do everything the other way around. I throw you the ball and say the word, and you say the opposite. For example: dark, but vice versa – light.
