Welcome to Lansdale KinderCare

Welcome to Lansdale KinderCare in Pennsylvania, centered in the North Penn School District. We’ve been dedicated to developing children to their full potential since 1985. Our teachers appreciate the valuable stage of life that is childhood and work hard every day to educate and enhance each child’s learning experience, from six weeks of age to 12 years old — all while helping them develop confidence for life!

Our classrooms are places to thrive!
In our safe and healthy classrooms, your child will be engaged in learning experiences that meet them where they are, both socially and academically. With fun daily activities, passionate teachers, and great friends, a lifetime of confidence starts here. Contact the center director to learn more about our child care options and schedule a tour!

AMERICA’S MOST ACCREDITED

We’re so proud!

Nationally only 10% of daycares are accredited – nearly 100% of our learning centers are. That’s a big difference,
and that means KinderCare kids are getting the very best. Here’s why.

SCHOOL-READY

What Learning Looks Like

Our talented early-childhood teachers set kids down the path toward becoming lifelong learners in a positive, safe, and nurturing environment.

Lansdale KinderCare Programs

Infant Programs (6 weeks–1 year)

Leaving your baby in someone else’s care is a big step. Everyone at our
centers—most importantly, our naturally gifted infant teachers—will work with
you to make sure the transition goes smoothly. When you step into our infant
classroom, you’ll see how much we want your infant to feel safe, loved, and
ready to explore their world.

Toddler Programs (1–2 Years)

Everything in our toddler classroom is designed for little explorers. That’s
because a lot is going on at this age. When your child is wandering all over the
place, that means they’re learning and discovering new things every day. We’ll
help them explore their interests (and find new ones!) as they play and learn.

Discovery Preschool Programs (2–3 Years)

This age is filled with so much wonder and curiosity. That’s why we offer a ton
of books and toys and bring artwork down to kids eye level. Children in
discovery preschool also begin to learn how we all work together in a
classroom. Simple math and science, pretend play, and group play help them
get used to a more structured school setting.

Preschool Programs (3–4 Years)

This age is all about expression, when kids really start to form their own ideas
about what they want to play and how they want to create. Every day in our
preschool classroom, your child will explore science experiments, create
artwork, and play pretend—all the skills needed for their big next step:
kindergarten!

Prekindergarten Programs (4–5 Years)

When you walk into one of our pre-K classrooms, you’ll see artwork and
writing displayed around the room. Labels are everywhere to help kids connect
letters with words. You’ll also see pictures on the walls that reflect the families
in our community.  Your child will also deepen their knowledge in language,
math, science, Spanish, and social skills.

Before- and After-School Programs (5–12 Years)

You can count on us to provide reliable care for your school-ager while you’re
at work, with safe transportation from our center to your child’s school and
back! Whether your child wants to start a drama club, build a volcano, or
create a comic book, they will have a place to follow their dreams. Your child
will start and end the day with a whole lot of fun!

Interactive Kindergarten (5–6 Years)

Kindergarten is a critical year for young learners. Experienced KinderCare teachers will
tap into your child’s natural curiosity to help get them even more prepared for
elementary school. Our engaging lessons make the most of current technology while
offering plenty of hands-on play and exploration.

School Break Programs (preschool, prekindergarten, and school-age)

Winter break, spring break, summer break—when school’s out (but you still need to work), you
can count on KinderCare to provide a safe and supportive learning environment that’s focused
on fun. We welcome children ages 5–12 during school break times and make sure they have a
sensational, screen-free experience they won’t forget.

Participating Child Care Aware Center

KinderCare partners with Child Care Aware® of America to offer fee assistance for
Active Duty military families and flexible support to fit their needs when care at a Child
Development Center on the installation is not available.

Learning Adventures – Enrichment Program

Cooking Academy™ (3 – 12 Years)

In Cooking Academy, kids learn new recipes from cultures around the world and
develop a healthy relationship with food. They’ll whip up everything from Southwest
rainbow lettuce wraps to pumpkin muffins, building their skills in STEM, communication,
and more along the way. And yes—little chefs get to eat their culinary creations!

Music Explorers™ (2 – 4 Years)

KinderCare families are already giving a standing ovation to our newest Learning
Adventures program: Music Explorers! Kids will learn to sing, move, listen, play
instruments, and even create their own tunes. Our original curriculum blends math,
science, social studies, literacy, and mindfulness (think yoga!) for a uniquely KinderCare
way of learning the foundations of music.

Phonics Adventures® (2 – 4 Years)

Learning how to read is a whole lot of fun at KinderCare! We help kids grow to love
books and words (and get ready for kindergarten) in our Phonics Adventures program.
From discovering the basics of vowels to practicing poetry, kids learn all about letters
and sounds in small-group lessons made just for their age group. (Bonus: Kids who
attend our phonics program are more prepared than their peers for school—and we
have the data to prove it.)

STEM Innovators (3-8 Years)

You’ve probably heard a lot about how important STEM education is for your child, but
what does that really mean? Our STEM Innovators program takes kids’ natural ability to
make sense of the world and applies it to robotics, chemistry, coding, geology, and
more. While your child experiments, they’ll discover how to use technology to do
amazing things!

Our Teachers

We’re the only company in early childhood education to select teachers based on natural talent. Being a great educator isn’t enough though.
KinderCare teachers are also amazing listeners, nurturers, boo-boo fixers, and smile-makers. Put more simply,
we love our teachers and your child will, too.

Meet just a few of our amazing KinderCare teachers!

A KINDERCARE TEACHER WITH

An Artist’s Heart

“My classroom is full of art!” says Mary Annthipie-Bane, an award-winning early childhood educator at KinderCare. Art and creative expression, she says, help children discover who they really are.

We put our best-in-class teachers in a best-in-class workplace. We’re so proud to have been named one of Gallup’s 37 winners of the Great Workplace Award.
When you put great teachers in an engaging center, your children will experience
an amazing place to learn and grow.

Family Stories

Don’t take our word for it. Hear what our families have to say about our amazing center!

  • To our family, KinderCare means a piece of mind.  We know that while we are working, our children are in capable, and caring hands.  They are in a safe environment to learn and grow. Thank you!

    Amanda – KinderCare Parent
  • This school has been the best for our family. My son has learned so much here and he does well sharing with others.  I have a piece of mind while my child is at school.

    Sandra – KinderCare Parent
  • Before KinderCare, my daughter was attending an average daycare where she learned some songs and made some friends; but I knew she needed more. I knew that my daughter, being a three-year-old information sponge, was ready for more of a “classroom” feel. When she started at KinderCare, I could tell by the first week that I made the right choice just by her behavior, her new questions, and her not wanting to leave. As a parent, I love the pictures and art projects and how everyday is something new. I can just look at the calender and prepare her for her next adventure. I’m glad we came here, and my daughter doesn’t miss her old daycare, either! So, we’re both happy.

    Christine – KinderCare Parent
  • KinderCare is an overall amazing place.  The staff are so helpful and my kids love coming here! Ms. Leah and Ms. Diana are great teachers, as is everyone else.  Thank you for helping to teach my children and watch them grow.

    Sam – KinderCare Parent
  • It’s sounds strange to say, but KinderCare of Lansdale was originally not our first choice of daycares for our daughter, Paige. I had originally enrolled her at a daycare at a local church near our home beginning in September of 2014. But because Paige was born almost a month early, we had to scramble to find a temporary daycare for her for the month of August. We didn’t have much time to search for one and KinderCare of Lansdale was near my husband’s work location, which was convenient because he would be dropping her off every day. The staff at KinderCare was so friendly, and the facility is very clean, bright and welcoming. These were things that really helped to calm my fears and really aided with my transition back to work after being home with her every day for almost 3 months.

When it came time for her to begin daycare at the local church, I started to have doubts about it. The month that we spent at KinderCare was more than enough time to realize that the staff at the facility is absolutely wonderful and they are some of most patient teachers I’ve ever encountered. Plus, all of the children, from infants to school age children, are always so happy while they’re there. I never spoke of my doubts until my husband came to me the week before she was to leave KinderCare and he said “I don’t want her to go to the church”. I was relieved that it wasn’t just Mommy having the anxiety, it was Daddy, too! Even though the cost of tuition was about $80 more than the local church, it was totally worth it to us. There are some things in life that you just have to pay a little more for, and peace of mind is one of them! One thing that helped offset some of the additional cost for tuition is the Gerber formula that was provided to make her bottles for her day at daycare, as well as the breakfast, lunch and afternoon snacks that were provided once she was able to eat solid foods. They also allow for flexible drop off and pick up times, whereas the church only allowed for a maximum of 50 hours per week. One of the things that helped make my transition back to work so easy is the daily “reports” that come home with Paige every day. The report lists when she took a nap and for how long; how many wet/dirty diapers she had; when, what and how much she ate; as well as a short summary of something that she really enjoyed that day.

Fundamentally, there was nothing wrong with our original choice for daycare provider, but it became very obvious very quickly that you get what you pay for when it comes to daycares. KinderCare is a facility that I highly recommend and now I plan on sending all of my children to Kinder Care of Lansdale.

    Karey J. – KinderCare Parent
  • Nikhil loves the phonics class. He always reads out letters and spells them out. He also pretends to be the teacher and teaches me how to say the letters. He has learned so much in a short while that anything I teach is supplemental at best. Thank you teachers for making reading so much fun for my child. I couldn’t do it so successfully without you.

    Aparna – KinderCare Parent
  • What more is there to say besides, “I LOVE my KinderCare!” My son is going on his third year and making the greatest memories along the way. I am very pleased and comforted at the care provided to my daughter too. The communication and level of involvement is excellent .

    Heather – KinderCare Parent
  • We have been with the Lansdale KinderCare for five years. We started with our son at twelve weeks of age and brought our daughter along two years later. We have seen great changes to the building and surrounding parking and sidewalks.
The thing that brings us back is the staff. KinderCare has wonderful programs from Music to Cooking and even Phonics. The staff brings wonderful projects to life. Right now in the Discovery Preschool, our daughter has a fantastic time learning colors, English, Spanish, manners, how to play with friends, the alphabet and the calendar. They even squeeze in time for naps, meals and potty training.
I never in the five years attending had any horror stories. Our children are happy and my son is head of his class in reading, writing and math right now.
Thank you Lansdale KinderCare for your wonderful, nurturing and educational staff.

    Jodie S. – KinderCare Parent
  • As a working mother, it’s hard to find the right place that can provide a comfortable and secure environment; however, we found that place with KinderCare in Lansdale.<br /> My children attend KinderCare Learning Center in Lansdale from January 2013 through the present day. We have twin boys in the Prekindergarten room and an older daughter that attends the School Age program before and after school. While at KinderCare, the boys have learned everything from their ABC’s, numbers, letter and number recognition to opposites, shapes and other fundamentals that will help them succeed in Kindergarten. They also learn life enhancement skills such as sharing, patience, understanding and love. KinderCare creates an environment where children have fun as well as develop wonderful relationships with learning and with each other. <br /> The love and patience provided by the boys’ teacher Ms. Patel, as well as all the teachers and staff, makes us realize how lucky we are to have found a place that is loving and nurturing for our children. I can’t say enough good things about these teachers. This was the boys’ first experience with school and we saw a noticeable difference in them. Within the first two weeks of attending, both boys were able to recognize and write the letters of their names.<br /> On a regular basis Ms. Patel, and the other teachers, show that communication is paramount via daily logs and by my personal favorite, in picture evidence. I love seeing how much fun my boys are having at school while in their care. I haven’t even mentioned the extra-curricular activities! Our son Thomas takes Phonics with Ms. Diana, and I can’t believe the progress he has made! Thomas is able to recognize and write his letters. Our son Ugo is in cooking adventures with Ms. Diana and comes home every week with a new recipe that he can’t wait to make for us at home. I love that the boys get so excited to tell me about their special activities and how much fun they are having.<br /> And we can’t forget about the School Age program our daughter Josie attends. I love knowing that she is being picked up and brought back to the safety of the center to do her homework and play with her friends. There is care on days off from school and the School Age staff always have something fun planned for the kids. Our daughter Josie also had the opportunity to explore other subjects that she is interested in. The School Age staff always has different centers set up throughout the room for the children to move through and again. I love getting photos of Josie trying different experiments and activities.<br /> I have a teaching background and I know how essential it is to not only have fun with children, but also to make sure they are getting a healthy balance of independent play and one on one time to nurture their discoveries. I attribute so much of my children’s growth and excelled development to KinderCare in Lansdale. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for the very best care for their children.<br /> You will not find care like this anywhere else. I’d highly recommend KinderCare Learning Center; you’re guaranteed to receive the type of care you would give your child.

Teresa and Thomas G. – KinderCare Parent

Is anything as intimidating as teaching children how to write? That’s why you need some helpful paragraph writing worksheets to help you get started!

Writing Paragraphs Worksheets

The trick to teaching your children how to write is to teach them to write clear and concise paragraphs. The paragraphs need a main idea. This is an easy idea for adults, but it’s challenging for young writers. So, these paragraph writing worksheets will walk your children through the elements of a good paragraph.

How to Write Paragraphs

Once kids are able to write words and sentences, the next step is to teach your children how to write paragraphs. A paragraph is a group of sentences organized around one idea. They often begin with a topic sentence and end with a concluding sentence.

How to Write a Paragraph – Learn the different steps that go into teaching your children the best way to write a paragraph. The instructions begin with brainstorming and then move on to writing the topic sentence.

The Four Parts of a Paragraph Printable

There are four parts to a paragraph. The first part is the topic sentence which states what the paragraph is about. The next section includes a supporting idea or two. The supporting ideas help to explain the main topic of the paragraph.

The final two parts include the supporting details section. This section fills out the paragraph and may provide an example. The final part is the concluding sentence which finishes the paragraph.

Paragraph Writing Activities – You’ll find an excellent group of writing activities on this page that explain the organization of the paragraph. Your kids will also get practice working with compound and complex sentences.

Red line | Educational social network

“From the red line, from a clean slate,

    New verses, new words…”

In the first grade, in the Russian language lessons, the teacher told us about observing the red line in writing when writing texts, starting a new type of work. She taught us to indent the line to the right at least 2 cm (two fingers). I became interested in what a red line is, why is it called that and why is it needed? Indeed, even in the 4th grade, the teacher still reminds us of the red line, and many children still make mistakes in the design of texts. I decided to find out about the origin of the red line rule and help the guys avoid such mistakes.

PURPOSE of the work: to find out where the concept of “red line” came from, what it means, how it is used in Russian.

    OBJECTIVES:

    – conduct a study in the classroom to find out the knowledge of children about the red line;

    – study the literature on the subject;

    – draw up a memo for classmates “Rules of the red line”

    Research methods:

    – survey;

    – search for information in books and the Internet;

    – systematization of knowledge in the memo

To begin with, I decided to find out what my classmates know about the red line. 20 people were interviewed.

    I asked them 4 questions:

    What is the red line?

Why is the red line called red?

What is the red line for?

Is a red line and a paragraph the same thing or not?

As a result of the survey, I found out that more than 50% of respondents believe that the red line is the beginning of a new thought, a new paragraph, a “show” of a new part of the text. There were also opinions that this is a line on which they do not write first, that this is the beginning of a sentence, and even an unnecessary place where you cannot write.

Answering the second question, the guys expressed the opinion that the red line is so called because if you do not mark it, the teacher will highlight this error with a red pen; that the line is important, and everything important is highlighted in red; that it is necessary to indent from the red line of the fields, and also that they came up with it on Red Square.

When classmates answered the question why the red line is needed, the statements were very similar – the red line is needed to separate the semantic parts of the text.

And almost everyone in the answer to the fourth question answered that a paragraph and a red line are not the same thing.

After the interview, I decided to find answers to these questions in books and the Internet.

First, in the Big Encyclopedic Dictionary, I found the answer to the question, what is the red line.

RED LINE – a separate line located exactly along the central axis of the set format. Previously, the first line of a paragraph was called a red line. In handwritten books it was reproduced in cinnabar (hence the name).

Secondly, we managed to find out the history of the red line.

The red line is a well-known typographic technique that is taught in the very first classes in elementary school. Put your hand on the copybook and step back a distance of about two fingers, thus marking the beginning of a new paragraph, a new thought of the author. What could be easier? In fact, this technique has an extensive and interesting history.

Long ago, even before the invention of printing by the famous Gutenberg, there was already a way to indicate in the text where one thought of the author ends and another begins. This method had nothing to do with the way paragraphs are now distinguished in books. There was no indentation at the beginning of the line, just as there was no line break in principle. The text was a solid wall, and the gap was shown by a special symbol, which, perhaps, everyone who has ever used the Microsoft Word program has seen – ¶

Why “From the red line”? Because red is the color of fire. Fire has always gathered people around for a conversation or a meal. The fire warmed, but could also burn. Red is the color of alarm and warning. The expression – “From the red line” reminds us of the history of Russia, of the times when there was no printing yet, and the most important books were rewritten by scribes. In old manuscripts, the text itself was usually written in ink, and the initial letters of paragraphs were decorated with cinnabar (red paint), and later with drawings, sometimes gilded. These letters, and according to them, all the first lines of paragraphs and chapters were called “red” (that is, beautiful). Remember the expression “red girl”, “red corner in the hut”, “Red Square”.

With the transition to printed books, the old custom was gradually lost; only the name associated with it survives.

“Red line” is a line, the beginning of which is shifted slightly to the right… To the right – towards the truth…?

“From the red line” – a new look at the usual phenomena, a look from the side of truth.

The purpose of the “red line” is to mark the beginning of a new paragraph. There are two ways to indicate a new paragraph – a red line (usually in fiction) and increased spacing between paragraphs (in scientific literature).

Next, I learned what a paragraph is.

Paragraph (in German Absatz) – a red line, literally – ledge, section, part of the text) – a segment of written speech, consisting of several sentences. (From Wikipedia)

The paragraph is currently explained as:

    1) an indent in the initial line of printed or handwritten text.

    2) A part of the text connected by semantic unity and indented on the first line.

Having learned the answers to all the questions that interested me, I decided to make a memo “Rules of the red line”.

And this is what I got.

The first line is an important line!

Place two fingers on the line –

    Step back a little –

You will get a red line.

    State all thoughts in order,

So that the text is clear, smooth!

Each thought has its own paragraph,

Separate it with a red line!

    Conclusions:

The red line is an important writing technique that serves to indicate the beginning of a new thought or a new type of work in the lesson.

The red line has a historical origin from ancient Russian handwritten books.

A paragraph in the text begins with a red line.

Highlighting the red line in the text makes the text easier to read and understand.

Working on this topic, I learned a lot of new things for myself, not only about the rule of the Russian language, but also some information from the history of Russia.

9th Grade Vocabulary List #4 Crossword

    What is a crossword?

Crossword puzzles have been published in newspapers and other publications since 1873. They consist of a grid of squares where the player aims to write words both horizontally and vertically.

Next to the crossword will be a series of questions or clues, which relate to the various rows or lines of boxes in the crossword. The player reads the question or clue, and tries to find a word that answers the question in the same amount of letters as there are boxes in the related crossword row or line.

Some of the words will share letters, so will need to match up with each other. The words can vary in length and complexity, as can the clues.

Who is a crossword suitable for?

The fantastic thing about crosswords is, they are completely flexible for whatever age or reading level you need. You can use many words to create a complex crossword for adults, or just a couple of words for younger children.

Crosswords can use any word you like, big or small, so there are literally countless combinations that you can create for templates. It is easy to customise the template to the age or learning level of your students.

How do I create a crossword template?

For the easiest crossword templates, WordMint is the way to go!

    Pre-made templates

For a quick and easy pre-made template, simply search through WordMint’s existing 500,000+ templates. With so many to choose from, you’re bound to find the right one for you!

    Create your own from scratch
    • Log in to your account (it’s free to join!)
    • Head to ‘My Puzzles’
    • Click ‘Create New Puzzle’ and select ‘Crossword’
    • Select your layout, enter your title and your chosen clues and answers
    • That’s it! The template builder will create your crossword template for you and you can save it to your account, export as a word document or pdf and print!

How do I choose the clues for my crossword?

Once you’ve picked a theme, choose clues that match your students current difficulty level. For younger children, this may be as simple as a question of “What color is the sky?” with an answer of “blue”.

    Are crosswords good for students?

Crosswords are a great exercise for students’ problem solving and cognitive abilities. Not only do they need to solve a clue and think of the correct answer, but they also have to consider all of the other words in the crossword to make sure the words fit together.

If this is your first time using a crossword with your students, you could create a crossword FAQ template for them to give them the basic instructions.

Can I print my crossword template?

All of our templates can be exported into Microsoft Word to easily print, or you can save your work as a PDF to print for the entire class. Your puzzles get saved into your account for easy access and printing in the future, so you don’t need to worry about saving them at work or at home!

Can I create crosswords in other languages?

Crosswords are a fantastic resource for students learning a foreign language as they test their reading, comprehension and writing all at the same time. When learning a new language, this type of test using multiple different skills is great to solidify students’ learning.

We have full support for crossword templates in languages such as Spanish, French and Japanese with diacritics including over 100,000 images, so you can create an entire crossword in your target language including all of the titles, and clues.

    Speak, speak, and speak!

Try to speak English the same way you write it. Do not worry about grammatical mistakes. The more you practice, the less mistakes you will make and the more fluent you will be. So, practice daily and do not be afraid of grammatical errors.

    Slow down your speaking speed

Your confidence will go down if you try to speak fluently from the very beginning. Give yourself some time. Start with slow speaking speed and increase your speed over time as you make more progress day by day. Slowing down speaking speed has another benefit — you will get enough time to make sentences in your mind before you speak.

The more you practice speaking, the more confident you will be.

    Use Mobile apps

Luckily, there are many English learning apps available. Some are free and some are paid apps. If you are a smartphone user, you should install some of these apps in your mobile phone. You can at least install one app and start practicing. A mobile app is a very handy and useful thing to learn at your convenient time. You can start with free apps.

Install and use a dictionary app in your mobile

There are several free dictionary apps that will help you to learn proper pronunciation and new words. It is highly possible that your smartphone already has a dictionary installed. Use it or install a better one.

Try to get a good bilingual dictionary for better understanding. Besides using a mobile app, you can buy and use a good bilingual dictionary. A good bilingual dictionary is always a good investment for personal improvement.

Learn English idioms and phrasal verbs

Idioms and phrasal verbs are very common in everyday English conversation. If you do not know them, you may fail to understand the correct meaning of what the other person is saying. So, do not ignore them. Try to learn the most common English idioms and phrasal verbs.

    Listen to news bulletins

Almost every radio and television channel broadcasts news bulletins. If you have a smartphone, radio or television, you can listen to these English news bulletins. Besides learning the correct pronunciation, you can learn correct English. Listening to these bulletins will also improve your fluency. This is a common technique used by English learners.

    Read out loud

How does your English sound? The pronunciation style of some people is very bad. But there is a simple and easy way to fix improve pronunciation. Take a newspaper or any other script written in English and read out loud. This way you can hear and test your own pronunciation. If you are not happy with your own pronunciation, keep practicing and your English pronunciation will surely improve.

    Learn sentences

Besides learning common words, try learning common sentences used in everyday English communication. This will give you a huge boost in your learning efforts.

You can regularly discuss about your improvement and weakness with your mentor. Oftentimes, she can help you. Your mentor can be someone who is good at English. She can be your school / college / university teacher, your friend or any person good at English.

    Try to correct your mistakes

It is common to make mistakes. Every time you make a mistake, write it in a separate piece of paper. Make a list of mistakes. We use subject pronouns such as I, we, he she, they when the subject is doing an action. Usually, we use subject pronouns at the beginning of a sentence. Example: I cannot remember the story.

But we do not start a sentence with object pronouns such as me, us, him, her, them. Example: Call him.

    Active voice and passive voice

Many English learning students get confused here. In active voice, the subject performs an action. In passive voice, the subject and the object of a sentence swap to form the correct sentence.

Incorrect: The cinema was gone to by me.

Correct: The cinema was enjoyed by me.

    Prepositions

A preposition defines the relationship between an object and its surroundings. Without the proper use of prepositions, your English will sound weird. Luckily, there are only a handful of prepositions and these are easy to learn.

    • Review the syllabus or assignment to ensure you understand the professor’s extension policy.
    • Whether you’re facing a scheduling conflict or an emergency, explain your situation clearly.
    • If your extension request is denied, determine how you can still turn in your best work.

A few years ago, a student raised his hand with a question about the deadline for submitting final papers in my senior seminar class. “Now, is the paper due midnight East Coast time or midnight West Coast time?” he asked earnestly.

I responded that if he provided proof he was on the West Coast, I’d happily accept papers until midnight Pacific time — I wasn’t planning to stay up late to watch the essays roll in either way. That set off a full week of students photoshopping their faces onto images of California beaches and Disneyland. In the end, every student submitted their paper on time.

    Ready to Start Your Journey?

Most of the time, students ask for more than a three-hour extension. And most of the time, professors happily grant extensions on papers. But how should you ask your professor for an extension on a paper?

The Basics of Asking for an Extension

Before approaching your professor, read the syllabus or review the assignment. Most professors lay out their policies on extensions in either the instructions for the paper or the course syllabus, which functions as a contract between the instructor and the student.

Policies on extensions vary widely. Some professors refuse to offer extensions for any reason. In those cases, try to avoid missing the deadline or review the late penalty to see whether you’re willing to take the hit to your grade.

Policies on extensions vary widely. Some professors refuse to offer extensions for any reason.

Some professors offer extensions on a case-by-case basis, while some may require a doctor’s note or other proof that you can’t meet the original deadline.

Other instructors set deadlines for papers but do not apply late penalties. Still, don’t take that as an invitation to miss the deadline. Even in these cases, students should let their professors know if they need an extension.

In terms of how to ask for an extension, it’s generally best to make the request over email. That way you have a paper trail of your request and your professor’s response.

How to Raise Your Chances of Securing an Extension

Professors will more likely grant an extension if you approach them early on in the term, which requires planning ahead. For example, if you know at the beginning of the semester that you have three papers due the same day, consider approaching your professor to ask for an extension even though the paper isn’t due for several weeks.

If, on the other hand, an emergency comes up that requires an extension, reach out to your instructor as soon as possible. Explain the circumstances and be specific about what you need. Are you requesting a one-day extension? A week? Or an indefinite extension?

Understand that professors will more likely grant your request if you ask for a shorter extension.

    Tips for Requesting an Extension

    • Check Circle
      Read the syllabus or assignment
    • Check Circle
Ask your instructor as early as possible
    • Check Circle
Reach out via email with a specific request
    • Check Circle
Ask for a shorter extension if possible
    • Check Circle
Demonstrate your commitment to the class

Be sure to show your professor that you aren’t asking for an extension simply because you ran out of time — even if that’s partly true. Demonstrate your commitment to the class by including a rough draft of your paper or a description of your topic in your extension request. You can also offer to come to office hours to discuss the extension in person.

Make sure to stay engaged in the class in other ways, too, such as by participating in discussions and meeting all other deadlines.

Sample Emails Asking for an Extension

Emailing a professor can feel intimidating, but using a template can make the process easier. In any email to an instructor, you should always include your name, your class or section number, and a clear question or request. You should also write professionally, and make sure to address your professor at the beginning of the email.

Students often ask for an extension because of deadlines in other classes, exams, work or career development events that overlap with the deadline, and last-minute emergencies. Whatever the reason, you don’t need a long explanation of your circumstances — just quickly mention the conflict and request an extension.

The sample emails below should give you a clearer idea on how to ask for an extension on a paper.

    Dear Professor Walker,

My name is Kellen Brown, and I’m in your 10 a.m. American politics class. In reading the syllabus, I notice the second paper is due on March 3. I have two other papers due that same day for other courses.

Would it be possible to request a one-week extension on the deadline and turn the paper in on March 10 instead? If you don’t grant extensions, could I receive the paper topics early so I can start working on it in advance?

    Thank you,

    Kellen

    Dear Professor Johnson,

My name is Stephanie Pritcher, and I’m enrolled in your 2 p.m. seminar on 19th-century British literature. Our first paper is due the same week as a major presentation at my work. Do you offer extensions on papers? I see in the syllabus that late papers receive a grade penalty, which I’d like to avoid. If you offer extensions, I could turn in the paper on Tuesday, April 20, instead of Friday, April 16.

    Thank you,

    Stephanie

    Dear Professor Prakash,

My name is Sandra Lassiter, and I’m in your 11:30 a.m. history 201 class. Because of a family emergency, I will be out of town this weekend without my research materials for the paper due on Monday. Would it be possible to request a three-day extension and turn in my essay in class on Thursday? I’m attaching my outline and rough draft to show the progress I’ve made on the paper so far.

    Thank you,

    Sandra

What If You Don’t Get the Extension?

Most professors understand that students are human, with lives and jobs outside of class. And most professors will gladly approve an extension. But sometimes professors say no. So what if you don’t get the extension?

If it’s just days (or even hours) until the deadline, research the late penalty and decide whether it’s better to turn in the paper late or rush to meet the deadline. Always turn in your best work possible and avoid the temptation to plagiarize, which will only cause more problems down the road.

If you’ve planned ahead, you have several options. You can rearrange your schedule to make time to write the paper, ask the professor for the paper topics in advance, or ask for extensions in your other classes instead.

Requesting a deadline extension | Career and Professional Development

In some cases you may need more time than the employer has allowed to make a decision. In that case:

    • You may ask for an extension. The employer does not have to grant it.
    • Make sure you have a concrete and appropriate reason for asking for an extension. Expecting to hear soon from another employer with whom you’ve interviewed is a legitimate reason. If you are just hoping to get more interviews, that is not a concrete reason.
    • Don’t wait until the last minute to ask for an extension. This looks like you don’t think ahead and may signal that’s how you’ll behave on the job.
    • Be tactful and diplomatic in your wording. You will need to explain your reasons to the employer. For example, if you have an upcoming, previously-scheduled interview with another employer, you may explain that it is important to you to keep your commitment to the other employer, and that in order to make the best decision, you need to attend the other interview.
    • For the sake of speed, phone the employer to discuss the situation. For the record, follow up in writing. Since this is a request that needs to be handled quickly, use email to confirm your request in writing. See the sample letter below. (If the employer granted your request verbally, use the email to confirm that, and thank the employer.)
    • Be familiar with guidance provided to employers on providing a reasonable amount of time for a job candidate to make a decision. NACE, the National Association of Colleges and Employers, provides an Advisory Opinion on Setting Reasonable Deadlines for Job Offers.
    • If you still have questions, please seeking advising. We’re here to help you.

    Dear Dr. Jones:

Thank you for your telephone call and letter that I received yesterday offering me the position of wildlife biologist with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. I am excited about the opportunity this position offers both in terms of job duties and location, and I very much appreciate your confidence in offering me the job.

You asked that I make a decision by next week on March 7. This is an important decision, and I am in a situation where I will not have all the information I need in order to make this decision by that date. To confirm our phone conversation of this afternoon, I am asking you to consider whether it would be possible for me to supply you with my decision by March 28. I would very much appreciate such an extension, and assure you that I will be able to make a firm decision by that date.

Thank you very much for your consideration of my request.

    Sincerely,

    Key Takeaways:

    • Ask for an extension as soon as you know you need it.

    • Meet your supervisor in person if possible to explain the situation.

    • Offer good reasons why you are asking for an extension and how you have tried to keep the project on track.

    • Good cause refers to circumstances that were unexpected or beyond your control.

While deadlines are necessary, you may run into obstacles that prevent you from turning in your work on time. If you need more time to meet a deadline at work, you must tell your supervisor and request an extension. A professional extension request can help you maintain a good relationship with your manager and perform your role well.

This article explains when and how to ask for an extension at work, and provides examples to help you make your own request.

When to ask for an extension

You should ask for an extension as soon as you know you cannot meet the original deadline. Your deadline may affect other parts of the project, such as the ability of other team members to complete their work, as well as the official completion date for the project. Requesting an extension as early as possible can give your manager more time to adjust the project schedule and workflow. Some situations in which you may need to request an extension include:

    • The project requires more work or research than anticipated.

    • The original project schedule did not take into account all factors.

    • You are waiting for the necessary materials to complete your part of the project.

    • You should have given priority to completing another project.

    • You did not have access to the necessary equipment.

    • You have experienced a personal emergency that has prevented you from working.

How to ask for an extension at work

Use these steps to make an effective extension request:

    1. Determine the importance of the deadline

Before formally requesting an extension, evaluate the nature of the deadline. Try asking if the project timeline is flexible. If the deadline is set for the 25th, you might be asking if that’s a hard deadline or if the goal is to complete the project by the end of the month. Your manager’s response may provide more information about whether or not to request an extension.

    2. Decide how to ask

The way you submit your request can affect how well your supervisor will receive it. If you usually communicate with the project manager via email, please send an email request.

You can also ask questions in person or by phone. In any case, you should also send a follow-up email after the conversation to confirm the new deadline and any other additional information you discussed.

    3. Give Specific Reason

Consider the circumstances under which you are requesting an extension and provide the specific reason. Explaining that a project requires more research than expected or is more complex than anticipated can be an effective way to start discussions about a new deadline. Good reasons can be a personal emergency or extenuating circumstances, but always be honest with your manager.

    4. Show your commitment

Try to communicate your commitment to the project when asking for an extension. Explain that you need one more day to make sure the product meets the client’s standards, that you are waiting for materials to be completed accurately, or that you are going to work overtime to meet a new deadline. By showing your manager that you are working to achieve the best possible result on the project, even though you need more time, you can maintain a positive relationship with him. They may be more likely to grant your request and entrust you with projects in the future if your dedication is evident.

    5. Offer to share your progress

If possible, offer to share the completed part of the project or the first draft of the report. You can use this Proof of Progress to show your manager and team how far along you are with your work, and even provide them with any necessary materials they may need to work on their part of the project.

As you work towards a new deadline, keep your manager updated on new versions of your work or notifications of progress. This strategy shows that you are making the most of this extra time.

    6. Set a reasonable new deadline

Your request for an extension must state exactly how much time you need and by when you will complete your work. Consider contacting your manager with a proactive decision included in your renewal request. When scheduling a new date, consider the needs of the supervisor or client, as well as the steps you still need to take to complete the job. You can measure how long each step will take to set a new achievable deadline. Your proposed deadline also demonstrates your commitment to your responsibilities and helps you maintain trust with your manager.

    7. Acknowledge

At the end of your request and after receiving your extension, acknowledge your manager’s extra time and understanding. A quick apology for a delay or inconvenience can help a manager or client graciously accept a new deadline.

“Hi Maria, this month’s budget report is more complicated than usual due to two new marketing campaigns and training for new employees. If you like, I can send you ready-made portions, but if I had two more days to complete the full report, then I could give you a more accurate analysis.

Example of a formal email request

Subject: Request for an extension of a project

    Dear Mrs. Hernandez,

I am e-mailing to request an extension for a market research project. It took longer than I expected to get to the correct sources, but several vendors have informed me that they will contact me this week. I believe the delay will result in a more accurate and comprehensive report.

I would like to submit the project on Friday 16 August instead of Monday 12 August. I’d be happy to submit a preliminary report before that date if you’d like to see it.

We apologize for the delay and thank you for your understanding on this matter.

    Sincerely,
    Allison Iwasco
