Mathematics Learning Center – Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus

Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus

Spring 2023: To continue to provide safe and accessible support, the Learning Centers
will offer both virtual and in-person tutoring and support services. Check each center’s
website for hours and availability. Email the Learning Centers for assistance.

Montgomery College’s Resource Center at the Takoma Park/Silver Spring campus is undergoing
a major renovation. During this time, the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Writing, Reading,
and Language Center (WRLC) will relocate to the Academic Success Center (ASC), located
at Commons 110. Tutoring services for the ASC and the WRLC, computer lab access, and
food pantry access can all be found at this location. We look forward to working with
you!

News:
Accudemia is the new scheduling system for MC learning centers. Each center will be
piloting a different part of Accudemia this semester. While some centers will be just
using it behind-the-scenes and continue to use WCONLINE for all appointments, some
centers (like the Germantown Writing, Reading, and Language Center) will be piloting
it for all in-person and virtual appointments. We are looking forward to your feedback
regarding this new system, so if you run into any issues or simply want to share your
opinion, please let us know.

Distance learning at the Academy Training Center

Online course schedule →

At the Academy Training Center, you can undergo advanced training, training and retraining remotely for most educational programs. Our technologies allow you to study from any device and at any time convenient for you. You get the most up-to-date theoretical material. Lectures and exam questions are constantly updated depending on the requirements of the law.

We host webinars using a dedicated video conferencing platform (learn more) that allows you to:

  1. Do not install additional programs (such as Skype and Zoom), but connect to the webinar directly through the browser.
  2. Listen to lectures and take part in them from any convenient device (computer, smartphone, tablet).
  3. Watch recorded webinars. Couldn’t be online during training? We will provide you with a recording of the lecture.

You no longer need to leave your home or take time off from work to improve your skills. Get trained in 4 easy steps:

  • Select the desired program and fill out the application.
  • Sign the contract (online) and pay. After payment, you will be sent an email with access data to the platform and detailed instructions.
  • Listen to webinars with a teacher and go through the lecture material. The process involves constant feedback. Ask any questions to the course instructors online.
  • Pass an exam or final thesis. After successful completion, we issue you with documents on completion of training. You can get them in person at our branches or by mail.

To study the material and control knowledge, the Academy Training Center uses several technological solutions at once, including:

  1. Proprietary system based on Moodle that provides training in procurement and special purpose courses, construction safety and construction control, transport and electrical safety, blue-collar jobs and first aid. In this system, you can study lectures, perform practical tasks, take tests and send qualifying papers.
  2. OLYMPOX teaching and control system . It automates the processes of pre-examination preparation and testing of knowledge on the safety of hydraulic structures, industrial and energy security.
  3. Training and control system “Training of Personnel” , developed by LLC STC “TECHNOLIDER”. The program has already loaded more than 500 courses, the list of which is regularly updated. Thanks to the visualization of the educational process, it will be convenient for you to prepare for the exam. The system remembers incorrect user answers and allows you to return to them again.
  4. EVA Adaptive Learning Portal, which helps you prepare for the exam in all areas and each Industrial Security Approval Code. All questions in the system fully comply with the latest version of Rostekhnadzor tests. Adaptive learning algorithms greatly increase the speed and quality of assimilation of the material covered. The interface is fully consistent with the Unified Testing Portal (EPT), which will facilitate the certification process in the TAK of Rostekhnadzor or in the enterprise commission through the EPT.

I have taken numerous Chemistry courses including General, Organic, Inorganic, Biochemistry, Analytical, and Biophysical Chemistry. I passed the Diagnostic of Undergraduate Chemistry Knowledge exam on my first attempt, which was a requirement for graduation. Patient, Understanding And Approachable Chemistry Tutor

Description:

I have a PhD in chemistry and have taught general (introductory) chemistry and organic chemistry. I also taught biochemistry online, so I am very familiar with teaching remotely.
I am very patient and teachstudents how to THINK their way through chemistry problems. To achieve this, I like to start with very simple problems so that the student can easily see the strategy behind solving problems. Starting with easy problems also helps remove the belief that “chemistry is too hard”
I then move to harder problems so that the student learns to trust themselves. When the lightbulb goes off and the student really “gets it” it is just a matter of applying the same strategy throughout the entire year of chemistry. They need to learn how to think like a chemist (which will help them in all their science courses)….

Recent Review:

We had several people respond to our ad for a high school chemistry tutor for my daughter. I chose Rob because it was clear he had a lot of experience teaching and that he really cares about students. Mydaughter likes working with him, and he was able to help her understand the concepts she was struggling with. We would definitely work with Rob again….

FAQs for finding a chemistry tutor near you

What are chemistry tutors?

A chemistry tutor offers tutoring services with a focus on chemistry related homework and exams. You can hire different types of chemistry tutors such as an organic chemistry tutor to help you understand the particular area of chemistry you’re studying. A chemistry tutor can help break down complex concepts and can provide clarity on what you learned in school.

How much do chemistry tutors charge?

The national average for hiring a chemistry tutor on Care.com costs $21.80 per hour as of January 2023. This rate may vary depending on what types of assignments the student needs help with, and the experience or level of education each tutor has.

How can I find a good chemistry tutor on Care.com?

Start your search for candidates by narrowing down to just the chemistry tutors in your area and filtering by their hourly pay rate. From there, compare the experience each tutor has teaching chemistry and read reviews from other families in your area that have worked with them previously.

What interview questions should I ask a chemistry tutor?

You want to make sure the tutor understands the chemistry subjects the student is struggling with and has good ideas for how to see improvements. Ask questions about the techniques they use to teach chemistry and how long they’ve been working as a tutor. Also ask if they provide one-on-one tutoring in person or online and how long they are willing to help the student with their chemistry assignments.

What does a chemistry tutor do?

You can hire a chemistry tutor to help you with a few different things. For example, a chemistry tutor can help you complete homework assignments. Or you can work with one to make sure you’re ready for an upcoming exam. You can even hire analytical, physical, or organic chemistry tutors to help you understand specific areas of chemistry. Chemistry tutors can assist students in high school and college chemistry classes and can help younger students prepare for their AP chemistry exam.

Chemistry in the United States

For centuries, people have been trying to understand and manipulate the world around them. Through experimentation, many poisons and cures have been made or discovered. Long was the pursuit of the local town alchemist concocting potions and cures to the ails of his town folk. Most of what would have been considered witchcraft centuries ago were more likely than not a chemist experimenting with different elements such as trying to turn lead into gold.

As humanity was continually digging for new information and understanding, more elements were discovered. Finding more items in the natural world that, having certain essential properties, could not be simplified or broken down further became, what is known today, as an element.

First published in 1869, Dmitri Mendeleev designed the Periodic table to illustrate all the elements known to humanity including some yet to be discovered elements. It would be realized that these elements are the building blocks for everything in the known universe. Everything on our very large planet can be broken down into a collection of these singular elements.

Mendeleev structured the periodic table of elements in such a way that there are 6 groups ordered into a rectangular area. Each column specifying a group of elements in order of fewer to greater numbers of elements. The most generalized groups are used to categorize the elements as metals, metalloids and nonmetals. The subgroups consist of Alkali metal, Alkaline earth metal, Lanthanide, Actinide, Transitional Metal, Post-transitional metal, Metalloid, Reactive nonmetal and Noble gas. The elements themselves are then assigned to one of the subgroups.

In chemistry, the periodic table has since become the standard for reference in regard to the number of protons, neutrons, electrons as well as atomic weight.

Stoichiometry

Chemistry involves math and a lot of it! Sorry if this scares you, but whether you are learning organic or inorganic chemistry there will be math involved always.

If you have a basic understanding of chemistry, then you know that generally organic compounds will contain a carbon molecule while inorganic compounds usually do not. As elements are put in proximity of each other, chemical reactions will combine in definite ratios of chemicals causing the amount of each element to be the same at the end of the reaction. If that seemed a bit of gibberish, then simply put Stoichiometry measures the amounts of elements in a reaction of multiple compounds. After measuring the reactions then it predicts the resulting compounds based on the structures and shapes of the elements involved.

Later down the line, you will learn how to convert standards of measurement and be able to determine the resultant, the ratios, and the amounts of each component involved in the reaction. Yet, if you still need a small push to learn the basics or continue onto more complex chemistry then I would recommend looking up a SuperProf Tutor.

Stoichiometry is an essential part of understanding chemistry and being able to understand how different elements attract and repel each other is key. The math involved in chemistry is a fascinating field because understanding this will allow you to predict the results of chemicals being put together.

Advanced mathematics and the basis of chemistry is the first step in being able to manipulate the elements as you want the insight to know what could and will happen after. While this is a complex subject, there are myriad websites and videos across the internet that will walk you step by step through the calculations and help you on your way to better understanding.

Learning at Home

Once you have mastered stoichiometry and feel comfortable calculating the results of different element combinations, home chemistry kits are where you can see if your predictions were correct. This is where you can bring your theories from paper into the real world.

Most kits, whether for adults or children, will include items such as beakers, flasks, glass tubes, a type of burner or heater, and a collection of separated elements. From the manuals and the tools provided in these kits, there are usually a series of experiments that you can conduct to explore whether you made the right calculations or if you made a mistake by omitting something. Yet, a challenge many home chemists face is that most kits will only have enough supplies for 2-3 experiments.

Bachelor’s Degree and Doctoral Programs

All over the country, chemistry is taught as a foundational science. Majoring in chemistry can lead to careers as a chemical technician, toxicologist, analytical, and or synthetic chemist just to name a few.

Where can you start learning chemistry? Ranked the best chemistry degree in the United States is the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Located in La Jolla, this coastal university offers Bachelor’s, Masters and Doctoral Degrees in chemistry. Second to UCSD is the University of Wisconsin – Madison. This, too, is a large public school that offers Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral Degrees but the projected salary of a chemistry graduate is fairly higher than that of UCSD.

Getting a formal degree in Chemistry is a long, time-intensive, and expensive road. Not for the faint of heart. Yet, the rewards are there along with other options in the science field and beyond.

Private Tutor

Nowadays there is so much information on the internet that it’s hard to filter through it all. How do you find a trustworthy website? How can you answer the specific questions you have when so many videos and articles are horribly general and broad?

Education services are another option, but they are incredibly expensive which becomes a barrier for most people. How many people can afford to spend the time and money for another decade in school? This is really unfortunate as everyone should have equal access to inexpensive education.

Chemistry is one of the foundational studies that help you understand the world that surrounds us. SuperProf is a fantastic platform with that goal in mind. Here you will be able to find and choose tutors from all across the United States. Both locally and remote, you can read through their professional instructor bios and choose the tutor that is best suited to your needs. Whether you need a basic intro into chemistry, or you have an advanced understanding and want to learn more about a specific aspect, Superprof will have the tutors you need to help you learn and grow.

Chemistry

An excellent tutor, very patient and well presents the material, seriously prepares for the lessons with all the necessary materials and assignments. Explains clearly.

How to choose a chemistry tutor?

The surrounding world is complex and diverse, the same substances and materials can behave in completely different ways. Chemistry helps to understand how metals differ from amorphous bodies, and inert gases from ordinary gases. This is a subject that opens up to eighth grade students who have already studied natural history, physics, and also mastered the skills of mathematical calculations. It is not easy to study processes and interactions – you have to memorize the names of the elements, their designation, valencies, types of reactions, types of bonds. And this is just a base to move on to more complex material: the study of reactions and the compilation of equations describing them. Chemistry is the leader of the school curriculum in terms of the number of unlearned and missed lessons by students. nine0010

School standards and requirements

The subject begins in the eighth grade. In this case, the course is divided into two logical lines, corresponding to middle and high school. If in the eighth-ninth grades there are usually two lessons per week, then in the tenth-eleventh grades there are options:

– a basic course corresponding to one or two lessons per week;

– profile level with three or four lessons.

Specialized classes study it at a higher theoretical level, the requirements for students are much higher. This is also the reason why many students seek the help of chemistry tutors. nine0010

The eighth to ninth grade program includes nine main themes. In the eighth grade, it is required to study the initial concepts: oxygen, hydrogen and solutions, classes of inorganic compounds. In the ninth grade, the structure of matter, types of bonds, Mendeleev’s periodic law, quantitative relations, reactions, properties of metals and non-metals, the basics of organic matter are considered. At the same time, the emphasis is on theoretical material, which is easiest to learn with a tutor. There are very few practical exercises in the classroom. nine0010

In grades 10-11, the basic knowledge gained in secondary school is deepened and expanded. Pupils of specialized classes who have passed the selection and have expressed a desire to study chemistry receive much more knowledge than their peers who have chosen other profiles.

In the eleventh grade, a child decides on his future, deciding to become a technologist or a pharmacist, a doctor or a veterinarian, an agronomist or an ecologist. That’s when there will be a need for classes with a tutor, the price of classes with which you choose. nine0010

If parents notice that their son or daughter is interested in these professions, but the child’s knowledge leaves much to be desired, then it is simply necessary to contact a specialist in time. A qualified teacher will draw up an individual training program, help the student to pass the exam for a high score and enter the university.

The need for additional lessons may arise not only in high school. Knowing that the teacher will help to deal with the material, the student will not be afraid and withdraw into himself in school lessons. nine0010

A student who takes extra classes only benefits from such cooperation. Regardless of whether classes are held to prepare for the exam or just to fill in the gaps, the child, communicating with a specialist, receives knowledge, motivation for independent work and positive emotions.

Factors in favor of additional lessons:

  • The teacher quickly determines what gaps exist in the child’s knowledge and draws up an individual work plan depending on the situation. nine0048
  • A clearly drawn up plan for preparing for the exam.
  • The teacher teaches how to solve standard problems and improves the student’s computational skills, if the situation requires it.
  • Dialogue, involvement in the work process and a friendly atmosphere at an individual lesson have a positive effect on the child

The Complete Entry Level Salary Guide • BUOM

February 22, 2021

Even if you have the necessary training, education, or certifications to work in a particular position or industry, you are likely to earn significantly less at the start of your career, than after you have had the opportunity to gain a few years of experience. The entry level salary indicates the base salary for people who are just starting their career in their first job in a particular field, industry or profession. In this article, we’ll discuss why entry-level wages matter, the national average entry-level wage in the United States, the variables that affect this number, and how you can negotiate your starting wage. nine0003

Why is an entry-level salary important?

Entry-level wages are important because they determine the base earning potential for people entering a particular field or industry for the first time. Entry-level positions usually refer to positions that are open to people who are just starting their careers and who lack sufficient professional experience beyond internships. Knowing how much you will earn when you first enter the profession will help you determine your earning potential for the position, allowing you to decide if that particular career is financially sustainable for you and your needs. nine0003

In addition to being able to evaluate and match careers to your financial needs, studying entry level salaries also gives you valuable information when looking for a job. You’ll gain insight into industry standards so you can make informed decisions when faced with job openings. For example, knowing the average base wage will give you an idea of how much you are worth as an entry-level worker, which will help you assess whether the wage offered by an employer is fair. nine0003

Average entry level salary

The average entry level salary in the US is $40,153 per year. While this is the average base salary, numbers range from $26,000 to $56,000 for some geographies and entry-level positions.

Entry-level jobs usually require at least some skills or training, unlike most minimum wage positions. However, pay for entry-level positions varies by employer’s region and is highly dependent on that state’s minimum wage. nine0003

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employers are required to comply with the Fair Labor Standards Act, which sets the federal minimum wage at $7.25 an hour. If you work full time in a paid position, that would mean $15,080 per year. However, each state may set a minimum wage that best suits the local economy and cost of living, as long as it meets or exceeds the federal minimum wage. nine0003

Average entry level wages by state and occupation

Entry level wages vary depending on several factors such as the state you are looking for a job in, the industry or role you are in, and the employer offering you the position . Entry-level positions that require more technical skills, advanced training, and/or job training typically pay more than positions that require significantly less stringent conditions of employment. nine0003

As mentioned earlier, entry-level wages are highly dependent on the cost of living as well as industry demand in your particular region or state. According to labor statistics, in the following states, salary in initial positions is usually higher than the average:

  • Alaska

  • 27

    Arizona

    27

    Arkansas

  • California

  • 9000 9000 9000 9000 9000 9000

    1. Research

Start researching the company or organization you would like to work for to determine what skills and experience you have that would be considered most valuable to that employer.

Then take the time to develop your resume to highlight the skills and experience that will set you apart and align with the mission, values, and vision of the company. Describe in detail achievements and experiences that will be particularly impressive, such as academic awards or an internship in which you excelled. By emphasizing your strengths, you increase the likelihood that you will be offered the highest possible salary. nine0003

    3. Gain experience

Gain experience or skills that will increase your chances of being hired and earning more money before applying. You can do this by taking courses, taking online classes, doing research, or offering to work on a project for free for a local business.

For example, if you are a graphic designer, you could ask them to update the logo of a local restaurant and then add the work to their portfolio. Even if your professional experience only extends to doing free work to build your portfolio, it will demonstrate your determination, ambition, and willingness to learn. nine0003

Is it possible to negotiate an entry level salary?

In many positions and industries, especially in structured programs such as medicine, consulting, and finance, it will be difficult or impossible to negotiate an entry-level offer. Therefore, it is important to consider other aspects of the job offer when making a hiring decision, such as company benefits, vacation time, culture, and other perks.

It is also useful to analyze the long-term benefits that this particular employer or position can provide. For example, working at a lower salary at a company that is a leader in its field may benefit your resume and career more in the future. nine0003

To make a truly informed decision about wages and benefits, you will need to do some research about the company and spend some time thinking about the experience this opportunity will provide.

+17% due to support and administration in the regions / Sudo Null IT News

We at Habr Career analyzed more than 13,000 salaries of IT specialists in the second half of 2021, we tell you what happened.

The median salary among all IT specialists is now 140,000 ₽. In Moscow, the average salary of IT specialists is the highest –
175,000 ₽, in St. Petersburg they already pay a little less – 150,000 ₽, in other regions, guys receive 115,000 ₽. The level of salaries during this period increased by 17% compared to the first half of 2021. This was mainly due to the growth of salaries in the regions.

    What is the median salary?

The median salary is like the average, but more accurate. This is the level above and below which the same number of specialists receive income. It turns out that if the median salary in a group of ten people is 100,000 ₽, then five of them earn less than 100,000 ₽, and five earn more. nine0175

Like last time, we will compare the salaries of IT specialists in Moscow and St. Petersburg with salaries in the regions, look at income in the context of: main specialties, programming languages and IT companies.

The data that you will see in our study is not just numbers from vacancies or resumes of specialists, these are real salaries that IT specialists receive right now. They are available anonymously in the salary calculator on Habr Career. The calculator calculates the current level of income, taking into account specific specialties, qualifications and stack. You can log in at any time and check whether you are currently receiving a salary below or above the market. nine0175

Salaries of IT specialists by cities

The median salary in the IT industry is now 140,000 ₽: in Moscow — 175,000 ₽, in St. Petersburg — 150,000 ₽, in other regions — 0 ₽.

The salaries of IT specialists in the regions began to approach the median value for the entire IT industry since mid-2020. So, in the second half of 2021, the difference between them was only 8% (in the first half of 2021, the regions earned 20% less than in the entire IT industry). nine0175

Total salary growth in IT was +17% (from 120,000 ₽ to 140,000 ₽) compared to the first half of 2021.

A particularly noticeable increase in wages in this period was in the regions – + 30% (from 100,000 ₽ to 130,000 ₽). In St. Petersburg, the indicator increased by 22% (from 135,000 ₽ to 165,000 ₽), in Moscow — by 19% (from 160,000 ₽ to 191,000 ₽). Wages grew the most in Omsk (+46%), the least in Volgograd (+1%). There were no salary cuts in the second half of 2021.

Salaries of IT specialists by specialization

When we talk about IT specialists, we do not mean only developers.
We consider IT people to be everyone who is somehow involved in the creation of IT products. Among them are testers, managers, designers, marketers and others. So when analyzing salaries by specialization, we take into account all specialists.

On the graph next to each specialty, a percentage is indicated – this is the difference between the indicator and the previous period. nine0175

The most noticeable increase in salaries in the last half of the year was for support employees (+38%) and admins (+25% due to growth in St. Petersburg and Moscow). The salaries of designers and content specialists have not changed. Not a single specialization went to the minus.

By the way, now the highest salary at Habr Career is for the Senior User Acquisition Manager vacancy at Gradient — from $4,000.

And now let’s take a closer look at salaries in specific specializations. On the charts below you will see three marks: the first is the 10th percentile, in the middle is the median, the last is 90 percentile.

    What is a percentile?

The 10th percentile is the mark below which only 10% of salaries are found. The 90th percentile, respectively, means that 90% of salaries are less than or equal to this value.

    Analysts salaries

    Salary of designers

    Salary of quality of

    Salary of operating specialists

    Eycarov salaries

    Salary0003

    Developer salaries

The median salary in the second half of 2021 increased in all specializations, except for systems engineers – their income decreased by 14% (it is curious that in the first half of 2021 their salaries, on the contrary, added 40% and showed the highest growth in the category). This time, the salaries of full-stack developers (+25%) increased the most — up to ₽150,000.

    Programming language developer salaries

Compared to the first half of 2021, the category leaders have changed slightly. nine0175 Elixir with a salary of 238,000 ₽ climbed to the first place, and Swift with a median salary of 200,000 ₽ was also in the top three. Scala moved from the second to the fifth place (186,000 ₽), and Ruby (175,000 ₽) went down from the fourth line to the seventh.

In the second half of 2021, salaries increased in almost all programming languages, except for Ruby and Delphi – salaries of specialists decreased by 2 and 9%, respectively. Elixir-developers experienced a particularly noticeable increase in salaries (+59%). nine0003

Salaries of IT specialists by company

Most of all in the second half of 2021, IT specialists were paid in Avito — a median of 248,000 ₽ (+8%). The company regained its leadership in terms of salaries, displacing Luxoft — in the second half of 2021, the company took fourth place with a median of 213,000 ₽ (-13%).

Skyeng and Kaspersky Lab continue to rank highly with 9% growth in each company. But the level of salaries at Alfa-Bank and OZON remained unchanged, so their positions shifted one level lower. nine0003

We traditionally add the salary of freelancers to the salaries of specialists in companies. Compared to the first half of 2021, it increased by 22% and amounted to ₽103,000.

    Methodology

This is our ninth IT salary survey. You can see previous reports here:

    • First half of 2021;
    • First half of 2020 and second half of 2020;
    • First half of 2019 and second half of 2019;
    • First half of 2018 and second half of 2018;
    • Second half of 2017.

The report for the second half of the year is based on data from 13,370 specialists. We indicate in rubles the amounts that specialists receive in their hands, net of all taxes. In order to make the data more accurate, we specifically cut off 1% of the highest and 1% of the lowest salaries.

We wrote more about how to use the salary calculator and how the salaries of IT specialists are calculated in this help article on Habr Career. nine0175

              Brief conclusions from the study

And now, for convenience, we summarize what we have achieved.

              • In the second half of 2021, the salaries of IT specialists increased by 17% due to the growth of indicators in the regions.
              • The median salary in the IT industry is now 140,000 ₽: in Moscow — 175,000 ₽, in St. Petersburg — 150,000 ₽, in other regions — 115,000 ₽.
              • Significant growth was shown by salaries of support specialists (+38%).
              • Software architects earn the most of all other developers — 256,000 ₽, embeds earn the least — 107,000 ₽.
              • Salaries of full-stack developers (+25%) increased the most in the first half of the year, salaries of system engineers decreased by 14%.
              • The highest paid languages are Elixir, Objective-C, Swift and Golang, and the lowest paid is Delphi.
