Florida Railroad Project

Interior of commercial premises

Train Station Design by SOM

In West Palm Beach, SOM presented the design of the train station to All Aboard Florida. This is one of three stations connecting more than 370 km of railway lines throughout Florida. For a state of about 20 million people, these stations will be a good alternative to car travel.

Miami Station alone is forecast to serve over 12 million visitors. Shops and cafes will also be located at stations in different cities.

West Palm Beach Station

All Aboard Florida is the first private passenger rail company in the country, so the design of the stations is unique and unparalleled. At Miami Station, the railroad tracks rise several meters above the ground. Breaks in traffic are minimized, and there will be no problems with visiting cafes and shops on the territory of the station.

At the Fort Lauderdale station, you can wait in the lobby for transport in peace and comfort. Visitors will be able to climb the platforms on escalators. The design of the West Palm Beach station will also be one of a kind. Roger Duffy, a spokesman for SOM, calls the project “a real breakthrough” and says they will definitely not stop there.

Miami Station

Fort Lauderdale Station

SOM has done a truly amazing job. The stations are scheduled to open at the end of 2016.

4 Factors to Consider — Peekadoodle

News & Knowledge for Parents of Preschoolers

Finding a preschool is always a hot topic on the playgrounds as admissions season approaches. Parents work diligently to find the best preschool in their area, and are tasked with balancing financial implications with the school’s location and philosophy. As a preschool administrator and a mom, here are four factors I consider when finding the best preschools near me.

Find Out the Philosophy

Every good preschool follows a well-researched and proven philosophy that’s based on early childhood education and child development. Some preschools are inspired by Reggio Emilia, which is strictly play-based, while others follow a Montessori approach. Educate yourself about preschool education philosophies. I make sure to look for preschools near me with a philosophy that suits my child’s learning style and is in line with how we parent at home.

Meet with the Director

The director of your child’s preschool will be a resource for you and your family throughout your child’s earliest educational experience. The director will ensure that the curriculum is carried out within the classroom, and will get to know your child and his or her individual needs. As a parent, you will work with the director to create continuity between home and school, and to best prepare your child for kindergarten. Since this person will be your guide during the impressionable early years and will ultimately be responsible for the safety of your child, it’s imperative that you feel at ease with him or her. When looking for a preschool near me, I like to meet the director and make sure that we are on the same page.

Tour the School

In addition to finding a preschool near me that has a philosophy I can get behind, and a director that I trust and respect, I always make sure to tour the school. Getting a glimpse into the daily happenings at a school will provide you with the best idea of whether a school is for you. When you peek into the classrooms, there are a few things that you should notice. Look for a low student-to-teacher ratio, clean and organized classrooms, and positive interactions between the students and teachers. Keep in mind that your child may be placed in a classroom other than the ones that you’ve seen on the tour, but walking through the school will provide a good idea of how the facility is maintained, and what is expected from the teachers.

Talk to Other Parents

It can be helpful to talk to other parents about their experiences. Although every child and family are different, you can find out first hand what a preschool is like by talking with parents who have children enrolled at the school. Ask about the parent community, their communication with the teachers and administration, and how well they feel that the preschool prepared their child for kindergarten. Some schools have parent organizations that are available to meet with prospective families to share about their experiences at the school. Ask the school if they would be able to share any contact information for current families, so that you can hear about the program first hand, and off the record.

Preschool admissions season can be daunting, as parents search for the best preschool home for their child. Keep in mind that the friendships you forge within your preschool community will grow into lifelong relationships, so it’s important to choose a school where both you and your child feel at home.

Peekadoodle is currently accepting applications for our preschool programs. We would love to meet you and your family on your quest for the best preschool home for your little one.

Education Portal of the Odintsovo City District Launched a new platform for learning “My School Online”

Due to the inability to attend schools and study full-time during the quarantine period, Russian schoolchildren got the opportunity to receive education in a distance format. About the launch of a new educational platform “My school is online” https://cifra.school/ for distance learning of schoolchildren announced the Minister of Education of the Russian Federation Sergey Kravtsov.

As the minister noted, the content of education, as before, must comply with federal state educational standards. The basis of the educational process is still the textbooks included in the federal list. However, an algorithm for continuing education in the fourth quarter programs, preparing for testing and passing exams is needed.

The new resource is fundamentally different from the existing ones: it is not just another additional education platform and is intended to support the educational process in a general education school.

Platform “My School Online” makes it possible to transfer the educational process to a digital format. It is deployed on the largest telecommunications site in the country and is ready to serve up to 50,000 requests per second. The Internet platform is designed for all types of educational organizations, “to all towns, cities – settlements of our country” (quote). Students who do not have high-speed Internet access will also be able to use this resource. According to the minister, where there is no high-speed Internet, television channels will be used for distance learning.

The portal will become an extensive database of educational materials for educational programs from 1st to 11th grade. It already now contains materials on six subjects — mathematics and Russian language for elementary school, mathematics, algebra, geometry, chemistry and physics for elementary school. The portal is currently under construction. All core curriculum subjects for all grades will be placed in phases until 23 April.

Electronic versions of textbooks are provided by the largest educational literature publishers. The content of educational and methodological materials for distance learning corresponds to the content of school textbooks included in the federal list. Each block of educational materials, like a constructor, is assembled from modules: new knowledge and skills; memory material; note; we analyze the topic; let’s check ourselves.

Study topics can be studied both online and by recording. The student has the opportunity to save educational materials and assignments on a computer, tablet, phone and print them on a printer. Portal tools allow you to solve and analyze tasks together with teachers, if necessary, return to topics whose perception caused difficulties.

New lessons will appear on the portal every week in accordance with the school curriculum. In addition, the platform will help provide teacher-student feedback and round-the-clock methodological support for teachers, parents, and schoolchildren.

Let’s add that the creators of the platform “My School Online” are considering the integration of the platform with existing educational Internet resources. However, this issue will be worked out after its commissioning in full.

We could not ask for a better staff to take care of our daughter. We have a 3 month old baby girl & it was very hard for us to leave her and go back to work. However the our daughter’s Nursery Care Giver’s, the Staff, the Assistant Director & the Director have gone out of their way to make our daughter and us beyond comfortable. They do an amazing job taking taking care of her and the other children.

They provide updates throughout the day via the brightwheel app. We love this daycare and the wonderful the team. We highly recommend this daycare to any parent in need of childcare service.

Salary mailman: Postal Service Mail Carriers

Salary of a Mailman | Work

According to a report from the National Center for Education Statistics, only about 40 percent of students enrolled in a four-year college program actually graduate, which means a whole wealth of Americans shell out for expensive classes, saddle themselves up with debt and have virtually nothing to show for it. Fortunately, not every great job needs a college degree or the debt that comes with it – and that includes being a mail carrier.

Make no mistake: Being a mail carrier isn’t a glamorous career. It’s actually very physical work, but it’s well rewarded. Not only do mail carriers have a decent salary that grows over time, the job also comes with some great benefits and a pension if you work for the United States Postal Service (USPS). Plus, you’ll get to join the ranks of fellow famous postal workers like Walt Disney, Benjamin Franklin, Abraham Lincoln, and The Office’s Steve Carell (yes, Carell carried letters across rural America before he hit it big).

Tip

The mean USPS mailman salary is $52,180 per year, or around $25 per hour.

Mail Carrier Job Description

Most people are familiar with mail carriers as the blue-uniformed workers who deliver letters to their homes every day, but that’s just one of a mail carrier’s duties. According to the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), they’re generally responsible for:

  • Sorting and preparing mail at the post office
  • Loading mail and parcels into postal vehicles
  • Delivering and collecting mail along their assigned routes
  • Obtaining signatures for registered, certified and other signature-requested mail
  • Unloading collected mail and equipment at post office
  • Answering customer questions

A mail carrier may sort up to 2,700 pieces of mail a day, whether that’s letters or magazine-sized flats. Each tub of mail weighs about 25 lbs. and must be lifted onto 3-foot-high ledges. In addition, mail carriers must also lift parcels which occasionally weigh up to 70 lbs., but the physicality of the job doesn’t end there.

NALC says that mail carriers who are assigned to a walking route walk between four and 12 miles per day, lugging 35 pounds of mail on their backs. This takes around six hours of continuous walking, sometimes in extreme heat or cold. Mounted (or driving) routes are generally seen as the least physically demanding because carriers don’t regularly leave their trucks, but it still adds up. These mail carriers generally drive between 10 and 30 miles per day, walking for about one hour total.

All in all, being a mail carrier is physically demanding and not suitable for someone with health issues that prevent them from lifting heavy objects or walking and sitting for long periods of time.

Mail Carrier Industry

Though the USPS is the second-largest employer in the country, package delivery services like UPS, FedEx and DHL all use mail carriers, though federal benefits packages are generally the most competitive. All mail carriers work within post offices and mail sorting facilities (think: a UPS store or regional sorting center). They also work on residential and commercial streets, delivering mail by foot or in a delivery truck. Sometimes this requires working in inclement weather.

Mailman Salary

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the mean mailman salary is $52,180 per year, but it changes based on experience and location. California has the highest-paid mail carriers with an annual mean of $54,450 and an hourly mean wage of $26.18. Texas, New York, Florida and Illinois are closely behind with mean annual salaries ranging from $52,760 to $51,760.

A mail carrier’s salary is dependent on length of employment, and USPS employees can expect raises throughout their tenure. According to the bureau, the bottom 10 percent of mail carriers make $36,990 or less per year, which is likely an entry-level wage in an area with a low cost of living. The top 10 percent make more than $65,620 per year, likely after years of experience in areas with a higher cost of living.

Mailman Benefits

Salary is only a small portion of overall mail carrier compensation. Those who are working for the USPS can expect a competitive benefits package that includes a retirement plan and federal pension. According to the USPS, mailman benefits include:

  • Health insurance through the Federal Employees Health Benefits program, the majority of which is paid for the Postal Service. There are a number of plans available including HMOs and Free-For-Service plans.
  • Dental and vision insurance through the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program. Employees pay the full cost of these plans, but it’s greatly reduced because of the federal group rate.
  • Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs), which can be used for out-of-pocket health care costs and dependent care
  • Long-term care insurance through the Federal Long-Term Care Insurance Program, which goes toward nursing home and assisted living expenses that aren’t covered by health insurance or Medicare
  • A retirement pension as part of the Federal Employment Retirement System
  • A Thrift Savings Plan, which is essentially a 401(k) retirement savings plan that allows employees to make regular, tax-deferred payments of up to 5 percent of their annual salary
  • Life insurance, which has competitive group rates through the Federal Employees’ Group Life Insurance Program. Basic coverage is fully paid for by the USPS.
  • A commuter program that offers tax-free purchases of transportation and parking in line with IRS maximums
  • Paid vacation and sick leave. Employees get 13 paid days annually for their first three years, 20 paid days annually after three years and 26 paid days annually after 15 years. They can also accumulate 4 hours of leave per period to use in the event of illness or accident.
  • 10 paid holidays per year

If fully utilized, these mailman benefits can greatly increase a Postal Service employee’s overall annual salary.

Mail Carrier Education Requirements

Mail carriers don’t need a college education or prior experience, but those working for the USPS must pass Test 473. This test includes questions about checking addresses, completing forms, memory and day-to-day responsibilities. In addition, applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent, a safe driving record and the ability to lift a maximum of 70 lbs. They must also pass a background check and physical exam.

Once on the job, mail carriers have access to various leadership and educational programs within the USPS that can help them develop their career and even prime them for graduating to an executive-level role.

Mail Carrier Job Outlook

It’s no secret that the USPS has faced financial hardship in recent years. According to The New York Times, the Postal Service lost $2.7 billion in revenue in 2018 alone. That year, the annual total pieces of mail shrunk by 63 billion from the decade prior. As a result, the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects available postal service jobs to decrease by 21 percent from 2018 to 2018, but there may be some hope.

Though less people are mailing letters and postcards in favor of texting and email, package shipping has seen a major increase thanks to the popularity of e-commerce services like Amazon. In 2018, the USPS saw an increase of 2. 2 billion packages shipped compared with the decade prior and added Sunday delivery to accommodate Amazon’s parcels.

29-year-old USPS mail carrier is on track to make over $90k

This story is part of CNBC Make It’s Millennial Money series, which details how people around the world earn, spend and save their money.

As a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service, Jordan Myers typically works 13 hours a day, six days per week. Most days, he walks around 14 miles.

He delivers mail to up to 500 houses each day, he says, and because he has a walking route, he’s outside all day, regardless of the weather. “No curbside pull up, drop off,” the 29-year-old tells CNBC Make It. He walks “up steps, down steps, through bushes, across yards.”

It’s strenuous work, but you won’t ever hear him complain. In fact, many of his hours are by choice: During the business week, Myers works about five hours of overtime each day, and takes on even more on the weekends.

“Everything is mental,” he says. “If you have the mindset and the drive to do something, I feel like you can really break through a lot of barriers.”

Everything is mental. If you have the mindset and the drive to do something, I feel like you can really break through a lot of barriers.

Jordan Myers

Living in Memphis, Tennessee, Myers earns a base salary of around $41,000 per year. But with overtime, he’s able to bring in far more: In 2020, Myers earned around $78,000, and in 2021, he is on track to make over $90,000. He also brings in around $4,500 per year from a rental property.

“I don’t think of it as hard,” he says. “I think about what I can do, what I’m trying to accomplish.”

As a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service, Jordan Myers typically works 13 hours a day, six days per week. Most days, he walks around 14 miles.

CNBC Make It

For him, that means making good money. Though it’s a lot of hours, Myers prides himself on his determination and perseverance.

Myers has worked hard for most of his life, starting his first job at age 12. Growing up, his mom struggled financially, so Myers moved in with his dad and began to work for his dad’s lawn service. “It sucked, truthfully, but it made me into who I am,” he says.

Myers’s father never complained either, regardless of the circumstances. Myers remembers his father once getting shot and still returning to work 24 hours later.

“My dad is my biggest hero,” Jordan Myers says.

“My dad is my biggest hero,” Myers says. “When you realize how he’s able to persevere … There’s no way I can say ‘I’m tired’ if he’s not tired. We don’t make excuses.”

Working at the USPS

Before USPS, Myers worked a number of jobs, including positions at the Apple store, Kroger, Dollar General and more, he says.

In 2017, he got a full-time job at USPS after hearing good things from relatives who worked there too. “My grandfather worked for the post office for many years. He said that if I go there, I would be able to make a decent amount of money and get a lot of hours,” Myers says.

In 2017, Jordan Myers got a full-time job at the USPS.

CNBC Make It

Myers typically chooses to work from 8 a.m. until 8:30 p.m., sometimes 9 p.m. He usually works six days a week, but will sometimes work on Sundays as well. Though the long hours aren’t mandated by the USPS, Myers enjoys the option to do so — and earn more overtime, he says.

“The biggest thing that people don’t realize as a mail carrier is how much work you actually do,” he says. “A lot of people say it’s easy because you’re just walking and they only see you maybe five minutes here and there, every other day.”

In 2020, amid the Covid-19 pandemic, his schedule was especially hectic. It was “endless walking, around 20 miles a day,” since there was much more mail and few carriers. At times, it was even scary, Myers says, remembering packages of medicine piling up and not enough employees to handle it all.

Even now, things are still volatile. “A lot of people are quitting due to being burnt out,” Myers says.

Despite his long days, Myers says he is still able to spend quality time with his wife, Jalyn, and 1-year-old son, Jacob. He usually gets to spend a few hours with Jacob each night after work, but says “we really play the most on Sunday.”

Despite his long days, Jordan Myers says he is still able to spend quality time with his wife, Jalyn, and 1-year-old son, Jacob.

CNBC Make It

Myers and his wife have found a balance that works for their family. “Family time is fairly decent and good,” he says. “I’m just waiting for Jacob to get older so I can destroy him in video games.”

Myers doesn’t let his demanding work schedule overtake family time. “Everybody thinks raising kids is tremendously hard. It’s more mental than anything,” he says.

How he budgets his money

Here are Myers’s monthly expenses as of October 2021.

Elham Ataeiazar | CNBC Make It

  • Savings: $2,900
  • Rental property: $913 for the mortgage, homeowners insurance and other expenses.
  • Housing: $809 for his own mortgage and homeowners insurance.
  • Car payment: $534
  • Memberships: $239 for Netflix, Spotify, Tesla internet and investment group dues.
  • Food: $220 for takeout during work.
  • Misc.: $60 for pet expenses.
  • Phone: $62
  • Insurance: $41 for health, dental and vision.

Myers and Jalyn both contribute to household bills and expenses. Though Jalyn makes significantly less than Myers, she pays for child care, groceries, car insurance, Wi-Fi and utilities. Myers covers everything else.

They think of each other as equal partners, regardless of income or expenses paid. “I do bring in more money, but we’re equal because she does have to take care of [our] son more, and if she didn’t, I wouldn’t be able to work the hours I work, so I wouldn’t make the money I make,” Myers says.

Jordan Myers and his 1-year-old son, Jacob.

CNBC Make It

One of Myers’s top priorities is establishing ways to build wealth. Each month, he puts $500 into his savings account, $400 into his 401(k) and $2,000 into a taxable brokerage account through Fidelity. Currently, he has around $3,000 in savings and $34,000 in investments.

He’s also a member of an investment group led by real estate investor and YouTuber Graham Stephan, which has helped him learn about options trading and rental properties. Myers has earned up to $10,000 in a month trading options, despite its risky nature. However, he usually reinvests those earnings and doesn’t recognize any gains.

He has also dabbled in other investments like cryptocurrency. He mined Ethereum for a while, but has since stopped.

Myers has one rental property, which he bought in 2019 for about $100,000. “I am actively cash flowing from this property,” he says. He pockets about $378 per month from it after covering expenses.

In 2021, Jordan Myers bought his dream car: A Tesla Model 3.

CNBC Make It

In 2021, Myers bought his dream car: A Tesla Model 3. With used cars selling for a premium due to chip shortages, Myers was able to sell his car for about $15,484 and trade it in for the Tesla, he says. The Tesla cost about $45,000, but with his trade-in allowance, he only owed around $30,000.

Looking ahead

In five years, Myers hopes to be “halfway to being a millionaire, if not more,” he says. In 10 years, “I think I’d be well over being a millionaire.”

Myers has no doubt that he’ll be able to reach his goal. “I think I’m going to crush it, truthfully,” he says.

Myers is also saving for another rental property, which he hopes will pay for itself over time.

Myers doesn’t want to share his story to brag about his success. Rather, he wants to “help the people that are trying to learn and grow like me,” he says.

“When you see me, it’s like, ‘Hey, that guy is also just working a normal job, day to day. He’s really growing day by day, month by month, year by year. ‘ I’m hoping I can show people that it’s possible.”

Salary of a postman in America – Vatnik in America

Financial and everyday educational program in the USA or FZhL No. 5
We calculate the standard of living of an American postman, that is, an ordinary hard worker.

I received a great job offer in my inbox – USPS postman for $18.51 an hour. The hourly rate usually directly correlates with the standard of living in a particular state, for example, Washington DC is a decently expensive region, compared to many other states of the country, where $15 and $10 and even $7. 5 per hour can be paid for the same work. nine0004

Requirements? Consider that they are not: 18 years old, or 16 but with completed school education, US citizenship or residency, no criminal record, drug addiction and the presence of a VU for driving a mail car. Everything. Let’s imagine that you are single, without a wife and children.

First of all, let’s calculate the gross annual salary (before taxes):
1) $18.51 * 8 hours (standard working day) * 21 days (5 day working week) * 12 months = $37 316.16

nine0002 Now, we need to calculate federal taxes according to 2021 Federal Income Tax Brackets and Rates and subtract them.
The USA has a progressive tax scale, now I will show: from $0 to $9,950 we tax 10%, and the remaining $27,366.16 we tax 12%, total:
2) $37,316.16 – $4,279 = $33,037.16

Now, we need to tax this amount with a state surcharge (although the Washington state government refuses to call it that) of 0. 58%:
3) $33,037.16 – $191.61 = $32 845.55

Postal workers in America are considered government employees, so they receive free health insurance and contributions to the pension fund under the preferential government program. In other words, we will not deduct the cost of medical insurance and pension contributions, this is a rather fat bonus from the government.

At the moment, in our state, and more specifically in the Seattle Great Area (this is Seattle itself and the cities and villages around it), namely here I am and received this flyer with the indicated hourly rate, the cost of renting a studio apartment or an apartment with 1 bedroom: ~$1,500 per month or $18,000 per year. nine0003 4) $32,845.55 – $18,000 = $14,845.55

90,002 Utilities according to statistics from Essex, a large local landlord, averages ~$180 per month or $2,160 per year (this includes electricity, water, sewer, garbage collection and internet).
5) $14,845. 55 – $2,160 = $12,685.55

Eating 1 adult, according to my household accounting, costs about ~$550 or $6,600 per year.
6) $12,685.55 – $6,600 = $6,085.55

nine0002 Mobile phone and communication, we assume that you have borrowed a mobile phone along with a pre-set tariff (the most popular format in the US), the average bill is as much as $70 or $840 per year.
7) $6,085.55 – $840 = $5,245.55

Clothes and shoes, taking into account their seasonality, wear and tear and wardrobe renewal, 1 person spends on average, according to various estimates, from $90 to $120 per month, averaging up to $110, we get $1,320 per year.
8) $5,245.55 – $1,320 = $3,925.55

And so, we covered our basic needs, working as a postman in the USA and we can even put aside almost 4 thousand per year … However! For example, in the state it is almost impossible to move around without a car, there are long distances, so we need at least a used car, but on the move, this is 4-5 thousand bucks, about 200 bucks a month for insurance and gasoline (gasoline in The US has gone up a lot this year), so you’ll have to say goodbye to your savings and save a lot less in the coming years. nine0004

Summing up, what conclusions do we draw?
Will you close your basic needs of a modern person by working as a postman in the USA? – Yes.
Can you afford to eat a little better, buy some new household appliances? – on credit Yes, subject to reasonable use of this tool.
Can you afford a car? – rather no than yes.
Will you be able to save something in order to save up for your own housing within a reasonable time frame? nine0011 – No.
Can you support someone else with this money? – No.

If you’re thinking about moving to the US without a career and a good education behind you, then all you can do here is cover your basic needs. If you value yourself this way and call it the American dream

– please.

Are School Ratings Accurate? How the Ratings on Real Estate Search Portals Are Harming America’s Neighborhoods and Cities – SchoolSparrow – Fair School Ratings

View our more equitable ratings for schools across the nation at this link.

Look for a home today on most major real estate portals, including Zillow, Redfin, Realtor.com and Homesnap, and you will find the public schools assigned to each home, along with school ratings. The third party ratings website which provides these ratings is the non-profit GreatSchools. But are those school ratings accurate?

Most parents believe these school ratings are an indicator of school quality. But the reality is, these school ratings don’t communicate what parents think they are communicating. These ratings are an indicator of the socio-economic status of the parents whose children attend the school. They are not a very good indicator at how effective the school is at teaching and learning.

This is because student performance on standardized tests significantly influence GreatSchools ratings. But research has shown that test scores are at least 70% attributable to parent income, not school quality.

Consequently, the ratings you see on today’s real estate websites give high ratings to schools where parents have high incomes. And schools where parents have diverse or moderate to low incomes get low ratings. Notice that school quality and teacher effectiveness are not even part of the equation.

In fact, the school ratings on today’s popular real estate portals obscure the quality of a school and the effectiveness of its teachers.

Today’s School Ratings Support A Damaging Narrative

The school rating system prominent on real estate portals supports a damaging narrative. A narrative that schools where parents have diverse or moderate to low incomes are low quality schools. The problem is, that’s not always true.

So, are the school ratings accurate? The answer is a resounding “NO”. But there is another rating system out there that more truthfully evaluates how a school is impacting student performance. Unfortunately the major real estate search portals are choosing not to display these ratings.

This story by Chalkbeat explains the situation in more detail.

We have school ratings for most schools across the country, and you can view our ratings at this link.

The Implications for Schools, Neighborhoods, and Cities

Today’s school ratings ignore the powerful connection between test scores and parent’s socioeconomic status. Consequently, the school rating system you find when searching for a home online misrepresents thousands of urban public schools nationwide

Parents are being steered towards homogenous schools where parents have high incomes. Sadly, parents are also overlooking high-quality schools where parents have diverse or moderate to low incomes.

An entire city can have unfairly underrated schools. This negatively impacts the perceived value proposition of a city, and ultimately the home buying decisions of parents. The economic impact on the city is easy to see.

Ratings that Provide More Truth About School Quality

That’s why we’ve created a school rating system, rooted in data science, that accounts for parent income. If you must consider test scores, our ratings hold more truth about how the school itself is impacting student performance. You can read more about our rating system here.

Our rating system is approximated in the graph below. Here we’ve plotted test scores vs parent income for all public schools in Chicagoland. A trendline is applied that represents the average test score for schools at every parent income level. By measuring the extent to which a school is above or below this trendline, we can measure the extent to which the school impacts student performance on standardized tests.

Our ratings recognize individual schools for their exemplary teachers and student support staff. And they recognize entire neighborhoods and cities as desirable destinations for parents searching for a quality education for their children.

Realtors report that parents want a 7/10 rating or better, particularly if they are moving to a new city. If the schools associated with the home they want to buy have a rating under 7, they often dismiss the school and the neighborhood the school serves.

But if those parents consulted SchoolSparrow school ratings, they might actually make different decisions. For example, let’s take a look at Berwyn, Illinois.

Berwyn, Illinois

Berwyn is a suburb of Chicago located south of the affluent suburb of Oak Park.  During rush hour, the drive to the Chicago CBD is roughly 30 minutes, but Berwyn has transit locations with a short 20 minute train ride to downtown Chicago.

The average single-family home value in Oak Park is $491,000. The average single family home value in Berwyn is $282,000.

GreatSchools rates five out of 13 public schools in Berwyn a 7/10 or above, with an average school rating of 5.8/10 .

But SchoolSparrow’s rating system, which more truthfully evaluates teacher impact on student performance, rates 11 out of the 13 public schools in Berwyn a 7/10 or above, with an average school rating of 7. 4/10.

Let’s take a look at this visually by highlighting Berwyn’s 13 schools in our graph:

Student performance on standardized tests is above average in 11 out of 13 public schools in Berwyn.

Sidenote: you can check how your Chicagoland city is performing at this link. (Hint: check out Chicago for some surprising results).

According to SchoolSparrow’s model, more than half of Berwyn’s public schools are underrated. And six of the seven underrated schools are elementary schools.

There are nine public elementary schools in Berwyn. The major real estate search platforms unfairly portray Six of those nine elementary schools. Two thirds of Berwyn’s elementary schools are unfairly underrated. What economic impact is this having on Berwyn?

Let’s take a look at these 6 underrated elementary schools. Note: we’ve added additional commentary about two of these schools, both of which are severely underrated by 4 points or more:

Jefferson Elem School, Berwyn North SD 98

Jefferson earns a 10/10 rating on SchoolSparrow, and is operating in the top 4% of schools in the entire State of Illinois. But all the real estate search portals show a 6/10 rating. Parents, don’t believe this biased rating!

Our algorithm (which takes into account several variables, including parent income) predicts that schools with demographics similar to Jefferson elementary will average a 27.4 score on the R/LA section of the standardized test. But Jefferson students blew this score out of the water with a 48. Folks, that’s 75% above expectations. Incredible.

Jefferson Elementary has a 10/40 diversity score. This means at least two races/cultures have at least 10% representation of the total school population. Students at Jefferson are getting some exposure to other cultures and will gain from the well-documented cognitive benefits that come with a diverse environment.

Consider their vision and mission statement:

We’ve interviewed principals at over performing elementary schools in Chicago, and documented several consistent themes . There were often strong principals at the helm, a culture of inclusivity and excellence throughout the school, high teacher morale, low teacher turnover, and significant relationships with three or more community organizations that provide services for the school.

We can see from their mission statement that Jefferson Elementary aims to embody several of these themes. And one data point that it’s working is in their students’ overperformance on standardized tests as evaluated by our algorithm.

Our hats are off to the students, parents, administrators, and, especially, to the dedicated and talented teachers that are truly educating Jefferson’s students.

Komensky Elem School, Berwyn South SD 100

Komensky Elementary School earns an 8/10 SchoolSparrow rating based on the impact that teachers at Komensky are having on student performance on standardized tests. Somehow the real estate search portals display a 4/10 rating for this high-quality school. Komensky ES operates in the top 21% of schools in the State of Illinois. Parents, Komensky deserves to be on your short list!

Our algorithm calculates the average expected score on the R/LA section of the test for schools with similar demographics at 24.2. But Komensky students out-perform this average by 32% with a 32. This school is doing something right, and deserves recognition as a high-quality learning institution for children from all walks of life.

And for parents that want their children exposed to a second language, Komensky is a dual language school (Spanish/English).

Their mission statement:

“The vision of Komensky School, as a dual language school, is to foster a safe community that provides, authentic learning that is inclusive for all students to empower their identities, cultivate curiosity, develop creative solutions, and promote a sense of global responsibility.”

Based on the extent to which Komensky students are exceeding expectations, we think they are succeeding at instilling their vision in Komensky elementary students.

Keep up the good work Komensky Elementary! Clearly good things are happening at your awesome school.

Piper School, Berwyn South SD 100

Piper Elementary is an 8/10 according to SchoolSparrow’s algorithm that takes into account the socio-economic profile of this high-quality school. School’s with similar demographics are predicted to score 29.4 points on average, but Piper student’s scored a 37, which is 26% above expectations!

To put that in context, imagine you took a test in a class, and it turns out the average score was 75%. If you scored 26% above the average like Piper’s students, then you would have scored 94.5%!

Piper is in the top 21% of schools in the State of Illinois, and they also have a 10/40 diversity score.

Prairie Oak School, Berwyn North SD 98

Prairie Oak School is underrated with a 5/10 rating as displayed on the major real estate search portals. Our algorithm calculates the average expected test score for schools with similar demographics at 25 points, but Piper students scored 30 points which is 20% above expectations.

Prairie Oak is in the top 28% of schools in the State of Illinois and they also boast a 10/40 diversity rating.

Karel Havlicek Elem School, Berwyn North SD 98

Karel Havlicek also beats expectations, scoring 27 points when the average expected test score is 23. 6. They are underrated with a 4/10 rating as displayed on the major real estate search portals, but based on out-performing the average, SchoolSparrow’s algorithm recognizes Karel Havlicek with a 7/10 rating.

Karel Havlicek Elementary operates in the top 32% of schools in the State of Illinois.

Irving Elem School, Berwyn South SD 100

Irving Elementary School earns a 7/10 rating based on exceeding the average expected score for its peers. Unfortunately this great school is underrated with a 5/10 rating as displayed on all the real estate search portals.

Irving Elementary has a 10/40 diversity rating, and operates in the top 39% of schools in the State of Illinois.

How Will the Real Estate Industry Respond?

Real estate search engines now have a choice: to display truthful ratings, or display ratings that steer families away from neighborhoods/cities under the pretense that the schools are “bad” simply because parents have diverse or moderate to low incomes.

We think Zillow, Redfin, Realtor.com and Homesnap are all aware that our ratings are out there, and that they could be made available for display on their websites. But apparently there is no interest. Do they not believe the problem exists?

You can help urge the real estate engines to do the right thing by tweeting this message

Please consider displaying more truthful school ratings, so parents can make better informed decisions when considering schools in their home purchase. @zillow @redfin @realtordotcom @homesnap

Our mission is to bring equitable school rankings to all families in the US, so that a home purchase decision can be made with a more balanced view of school quality. Today school rankings are biased towards privileged neighborhoods, and they unfairly discount schools with the socio-economic diversity. We aim to bring equity to school rankings.

All-Russian rating of school sites: why is it needed and why is it popular – Tatiana Kozlova

Tatiana Kozlova,
May 15, 2016, 13:34 — REGNUM The acceptance of applications for participation in the All-Russian ranking of school sites – 2016 – the annual review of electronic resources of schools and other educational institutions of the country, is closing. Registration will be closed on the rating portal on May 15. The project is organized by the Russian New University and the Prosveshchenie publishing house.

nine0002 School

Quote from the movie “You never even dreamed of”. Dir. Ilya Fraz. 1980 USSR

Every school in the country is required by law to have its own website. The all-Russian rating is designed to independently evaluate the work of schools with electronic resources, give recommendations and stimulate the active use of information technology by schools.

About the history of the rating, important changes in the new, ninth version of the program and the main secret of a successful school website to the correspondent IA REGNUM was told by the head of the information management department of RosNOU Igor Mytko and project curator Elena Koroleva.

– Tell us the background of the project. How and who came up with the idea of ranking school sites? What were the first steps towards its creation?

Igor: Six years ago, our university came up with the idea to organize a contest called “The Best Schools”. It was such a large complex competition, where there were many categories for which marks were made. Schools participated with great interest, but the problem was that the organization required a lot of resources, and we realized that we would not be able to hold it regularly. And in order to continue such an interesting interaction with schools, we decided to focus exclusively on school sites. It seemed to us a good idea – a local problem with clear conditions. Therefore, the next year, in 2010, we made the first contest of school websites similar to the contest for the best school. 434 schools submitted applications, we saw that there was interest in the project, and therefore the next step was to make the competition an annual event. So we came up with the idea of creating a rating of school sites. nine0005

— Why did you decide to create a ranking of school websites? Not companies, not universities, but schools?

Elena: There are a lot of ratings of universities and their sites, but comparing and evaluating school sites was not, at least seriously: site ratings based solely on voting, of course, were already then. In addition, the project was supported by the Prosveshcheniye publishing house, which publishes school textbooks, which co-founded the rating and continues to support us to this day. nine0005

Igor: Another reason is that education is basically our field of activity. At the same time, our team is focused not so much on praising our university, but rather on creating unique content – something that will be useful to future students, even if they do not enter RosNOU. There are things that have universal value, such as explanatory articles about how to choose a university, what a master’s degree is, and so on. In the same way, the fact that the school where you study participates in the ranking, takes such and such a place is, although more entertaining information, but still unique content. nine0005

— In your opinion, why should a school participate in the rating? Let’s say she has a website, but why the rating?

Igor: It makes sense for a school to take part in the rating for several reasons. The first and most important thing is to get an external assessment, an external examination of what you are doing. This reason is divided into two – official and more lively. The official one is that the results of the school website in the All-Russian rating are included in the reports of schools on the work done to the educational authorities. This is not mandatory, perhaps fortunately, but, nevertheless, such information is taken into account and is an absolute plus. nine0005

A more lively cause is the human factor. School sites are created and filled by people, this work is creative and interesting. They do not always do this simply by fulfilling their duties. Many join of their own free will, invest their soul, and therefore the result is very interesting and important for them, and even more so an external independent assessment, they are interested in competing with neighboring educational institutions. I remember that we had fierce competition between the sites of two kindergartens, which were located opposite each other, there they fought literally for every half a point. nine0005

– State the main objectives of the rating.

Igor: Stimulate progress. The declared goal, which we are quite close to in reality, is to stimulate the use of information technology by schools, the openness of school life. So that any parent who is going to take their child to this school, or whose children are already studying in it, could go to the site and see what the school has, how school life goes.

Elena: In addition, today, for each educational institution, the presence of a website is a mandatory requirement of the Ministry of Education. Some of these requirements, which, in our opinion, are the most useful for people, are taken into account in the rating criteria.

— What do you think is the secret of a successful school site?

Igor: The secret of a successful site, like, probably, of any successful business, is interest in this business, these are people who work with enthusiasm with these sites. It happens that a person who has never done this before takes on a site, and at first he does absolute horror, but he is interested, and then a little time passes, and the site gets better, accordingly rises in terms of criteria and, in the end, occupies ranking already leading position. nine0005

– Over time, the rating has changed, there have been some improvements. Can you tell me what has changed drastically since then?

Elena: First of all, we are changing and improving the evaluation system. Thus, in 2012, together with the Higher School of Economics, we developed completely new criteria and a new ranking methodology.

Igor: For all the time, the assessment system has changed dramatically twice: the first time together with the Higher School of Economics and the second this year. What caused the latest changes: when our rating grew to five thousand participants, the level of communication with the participants approached a critical level. Schools called us and said: we were wrongly assessed, they did not take into account one or the other … The indicator of the school website consists of fifty criteria, and the experts are people. And, checking hundreds of sites, you inevitably begin to make mistakes. With the growth of the number of sites, the percentage of natural marriages grew. This group of sites was checked at the beginning of the working day, this one at the end, they didn’t finish watching something, they simply didn’t find something on the site. It became critical. Therefore, in the spring of 2015, we stopped the rating and decided that we would launch a new one only when we reorganized it. nine0005

Elena: Now we have included in the examination the communication between the ranking expert and the editor of the school website. We created a new platform where participants can conduct a self-examination of the site and, for each criterion, add a link to the desired page, so that later there are no questions that something was not found. The expert goes through all the links and checks if everything is fine and if there are any errors. Then, for each criterion that did not satisfy the requirement, the expert writes a comment: add such and such information, indicate it … The participant receives a preliminary result of the examination and sees the comments. He can correct something, discuss with an expert and submit the site for re-examination, thereby obtaining the final result and a place in the rating. nine0005

— Is the number of rating participants growing every year?

Igor: Yes, the growth in the number of participants is obvious: 400, 600, 800, 1300, 1900, 3200, 4000 and 5200 last year – such an increase is observed in part because the sites that have already participated in the rating, the next year continue participation automatically. At any time, you can leave the rating, someone left, but these were isolated cases, basically everyone stayed. And now we have left all the results of the previous ratings in the archive, and schools need to apply separately for the ninth version of the project. We started from scratch – March 14, 2016 we had 0 members. In two months, by May 14, 3909 sites. On May 15, we complete the recruitment for this version.

— Why do you think the site rating is so popular?

Igor: Perhaps because his idea is simple and clear. There is a site, and there is an external, independent assessment. We are not affiliated with schools in any way. The assessment is honest, justified, and one can argue with it. A simple criterion for the correctness of what you are doing.

Elena: Work on the site is also a reason for pride. Schools exhibit the best they have, what they are proud of, and the results of an independent assessment are a very good reason for pride and an incentive for further development. nine0005

— How do you see the future prospects of the project? Any plans for the future?

Igor: If you had asked about our plans a year ago, we would have said that the main task is to make the system more perfect, to transfer it from expertise to consulting. And now we are going to check whether we have achieved this goal, since the main plan for the future is to make this, the ninth version, qualitatively.

Elena: In the future, we may expand the range of our activities and create a rating not only for school sites. For example, today colleges are asking us a lot. So far they are declared in the school category, but they still have a different specificity. nine0005

Igor: There is one more perspective, it is still on a strategic pending plan, but it is very important. We want to turn the rating site into an information and communication center for the development, creation and content of sites. Add editorial tips, quality content, and more. Right now, there are not enough resources for this, but there are plans.

Results of the all-Russian rating of school sites

The site of our school took part in the all-Russian rating of school sites. This is an updated database of websites of educational institutions, ranked in accordance with independent expert assessments. Websites of general educational institutions of the Russian Federation, websites of preschool educational institutions and institutions of additional education for children, as well as websites of teachers, websites of classes, school libraries, museums, and other similar Internet resources could take part in the rating.

The all-Russian rating of school sites is designed to independently evaluate the work of schools with electronic resources, give recommendations and stimulate the active use of information technology by schools. nine0005

Participation in the rating contributes to the development of modern approaches to the administrative, educational and extracurricular activities of Russian schools.

In the period from March 15 to May 15, 2016, 4,000 applications were received from 85 regions of the Russian Federation, of which 2,394 applications were subsequently self-examined and admitted for examination from 77 constituent entities of the Russian Federation and two schools at the embassies of the Russian Federation – in Israel and Cyprus . Another 1606 self-examination sites were not done; they have the opportunity to pass an examination in the next version of the rating. nine0005

On August 30, 2016, the Russian New University (RosNOU) and the Prosveshchenie publishing house announced the results of the All-Russian ranking of school websites (summer 2016).

The rating has been carried out since 2011 – this study has already become the ninth in a row.

For 6 years of work, the website of the MAOU secondary school No. 36 has been repeatedly awarded. In 2010, he became a laureate of the All-Russian competition “The Best School Website 2010” in the nomination “The Most Beautiful Website”. He entered the TOP100 rating of the Russian rating of school sites. Our school received a diploma of a laureate, the right to free attendance at lecture courses of the Russian New University (with a certificate of attendance), the right to place on its website the award mark of the laureate of the competition and the logo of the TOP 100.

In the all-Russian rating of 2012, the website of the MAOU secondary school No. 36 was the only one in Russia that scored the maximum score according to the “Interactivity” criterion (15 points). In the same year, he became the winner of the regional competition of websites and was awarded a diploma and computer equipment.

In 2014, the site earned a diploma and a medal of “High Level”. In March 2015, the site received 47 points out of 50 possible in the all-Russian rating of educational sites.

Home – Tiger Tots

where learning is fun!

At Tiger Tots we believe children learn best in a safe, friendly, family-like environment that challenges their creativity and thinking. Our teachers use Missouri Early Learning Standards to create educational and engaging lesson plans that find your child’s individual learning style and build on the skills they already possess. Through a careful balance of structured learning time, child-directed play, and engaging activities your child’s knowledge of the world around them can grow exponentially. We want your child to enjoy the learning process and look forward to coming to Tiger Tots each and every day!

Quality Affordable Preschool

“I have three children, with three very different personalities and needs (infant, shy-toddler, outgoing-toddler). The teachers at Tiger Tots know just how to interact with my kiddos, and they love coming to school everyday. My favorite things about the center are the consistent teachers, the curriculum, and the communication of staff. Thank you Tiger Tots, for making quality daycare affordable & loving my kiddos :)”

-Amanda H.
